Latest / Michelle Explains Anime, Poorly / Banana Fish Ep. 1- A Perfect Day for Banana Fish
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person, Michelle. I guess here back after
- 0:05Speaker 1: two weeks to do something that will probably just make
- 0:09Speaker 1: everyone stop listening to the podcast, and that is to
- 0:12Speaker 1: talk about banana fish. Yay, why are we doing this?
- 0:17Speaker 1: I don't know, well I do know, actually sort of.
- 0:21Speaker 1: It's because this is currently my second favorite anime. You
- 0:25Speaker 1: may remember when we were watching Ree zero, I said
- 0:30Speaker 1: reezero was like in my top three, but like I
- 0:32Speaker 1: think I might have said, like it's kind of a
- 0:34Speaker 1: I don't know, like not set in Stone top three,
- 0:36Speaker 1: like Mob is one, and then I don't really know
- 0:38Speaker 1: what happens after that. But well I do now because
- 0:43Speaker 1: this is now my second favorite anime and I finish
- 0:46Speaker 1: the manga and it's my just favorites manga now, so
- 0:52Speaker 1: hooray you get to find out some more weird shit
- 0:55Speaker 1: about what I like, like you didn't already know, right,
- 0:59Speaker 1: So yeah, we're gonna go over this and hopefully it'll
- 1:04Speaker 1: be okay. So let's just start with kind of some
- 1:08Speaker 1: background information that you may or may not be aware
- 1:11Speaker 1: of or care about. First of all, the anime is
- 1:14Speaker 1: based on a manga by A. Kimi Yoshida, and it
- 1:18Speaker 1: was serialized in a monthly showjo magazine called Visatsu Shojo
- 1:22Speaker 1: Comic that is no longer the name of the magazine.
- 1:25Speaker 1: It is now Betsukami. In case you were like, oh,
- 1:28Speaker 1: I never heard of that or something. I've never heard
- 1:30Speaker 1: of either of them, so whatever. So anyway, it was serialized.
- 1:33Speaker 1: It ran from nineteen eighty five to nineteen ninety four,
- 1:36Speaker 1: so it had nine year run. And besides having a
- 1:39Speaker 1: nine year run, that would make it the oldest story
- 1:43Speaker 1: that we've ever paid attention to on this podcast. So yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 1: that's going to be interesting. So anyway, a little bit
- 1:51Speaker 1: about a Kimi Yoshida. Her first published story, because it
- 1:56Speaker 1: was a story not a manga, was in nineteen seventy
- 1:58Speaker 1: seven in that say Shojo magazine, and it was called
- 2:02Speaker 1: A Slightly Strange Neighbor. And I have not read it,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and I would really like to. Her style has been
- 2:08Speaker 1: compared more to shown in than shojo, and actually in
- 2:13Speaker 1: a nineteen eighty two magazine interview, she said, and I
- 2:17Speaker 1: quote in English, at least being a secret jojo manga
- 2:20Speaker 1: artist suits me just fine. Hidden in some corner of
- 2:23Speaker 1: the world, staying out of people's way. I can actually
- 2:26Speaker 1: do some pretty outrageous things, which is great. So yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 1: you men can just shut up girls, let's just have
- 2:32Speaker 1: our own fun right here. End quote. More or less,
- 2:36Speaker 1: so that will probably end up giving you a lot
- 2:39Speaker 1: of insight into her and why this is so weird.
- 2:43Speaker 1: You will see as we go. I suppose I kind
- 2:46Speaker 1: of feel like she is the comic artist I would
- 2:51Speaker 1: be if I had absolutely no filter, but thankfully I
- 2:54Speaker 1: do so Anyway, the manga takes place in nineteen eighty
- 2:58Speaker 1: five and nineteen eighty six and maybe eighty seven. I
- 3:00Speaker 1: and get really confused because there's no one who's telling
- 3:02Speaker 1: me what year it is anymore. And it takes place
- 3:05Speaker 1: in the US in the Northeast, mostly in New York
- 3:08Speaker 1: City in Manhattan, but also in New Jersey in Massachusetts,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and that's it. Actually, there's not another one, So that's
- 3:18Speaker 1: kind of interesting for us, as at least on this show,
- 3:23Speaker 1: Like I haven't covered anything that takes place outside of
- 3:26Speaker 1: Japan or fictional Japan or like another world or something
- 3:29Speaker 1: like that, so it's going to be interesting to see
- 3:31Speaker 1: how they do that. Maybe poorly, but anyway. The anime
- 3:37Speaker 1: adaptation is actually from twenty eighteen, so it took a
- 3:42Speaker 1: lot of time for this to get animated for some reason.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And according to what I've read, this is like one
- 3:49Speaker 1: of the best selling shojo manga of all time. So
- 3:53Speaker 1: I don't know why it took so long, but I
- 3:55Speaker 1: guess it's fine that it did, cause at least we
- 3:58Speaker 1: had a major studio adapted, which was Studio Mapa, who
- 4:03Speaker 1: you may be familiar with because we have done shows,
- 4:06Speaker 1: or at least one show from them before, which was Chainsawman.
- 4:09Speaker 1: They also are responsible for a jiu Jitsu Kaizen's Vinland
- 4:13Speaker 1: saga Attack on Titan, the later part of it, at
- 4:15Speaker 1: least Zombielan saga, if you like that. I like that
- 4:18Speaker 1: a lot. And the first season of Doro Hedoro, which
- 4:21Speaker 1: is getting a second season and I'm super excited about.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I'm actually thinking about covering the first season next, but
- 4:27Speaker 1: we'll see. So it is released in twenty eighteen. It
- 4:31Speaker 1: is two consecutive cores, starting on July fifteenth and running
- 4:34Speaker 1: through December twentieth, so that is twenty four episodes. They
- 4:39Speaker 1: change some things, though, and the worst thing that they
- 4:42Speaker 1: changed that you made all the other changes happen is
- 4:45Speaker 1: that they change the setting from nineteen eighty five to
- 4:49Speaker 1: sometime in the twenty tens, so that affected quite a bit.
- 4:53Speaker 1: For instance, in the manga, things have happened right after
- 4:58Speaker 1: the Vietnam War. There people who have been involved in it.
- 5:02Speaker 1: There are incidents that I have to do with it.
- 5:04Speaker 1: So in the anime they had to update it and
- 5:06Speaker 1: make it the Iraq War. It's just not exactly the same.
- 5:09Speaker 1: You know, the Vietnam War had a draft, so the
- 5:12Speaker 1: people who were there like it just makes more sense
- 5:16Speaker 1: than it does in twenty ten or twenty fifteen or
- 5:19Speaker 1: whenever they were trying to set this. Also, some locations
- 5:22Speaker 1: aren't there anymore, which will go over as we get there.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And the biggest problem that I have with setting it
- 5:28Speaker 1: in the twenty tens is that New York is not
- 5:31Speaker 1: the same city It wasn't nineteen eighty five like at all.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I don't know how many of you who are listening
- 5:36Speaker 1: to this have been to New York or know that
- 5:38Speaker 1: much about New York City, but that is my ancestral homeland,
- 5:43Speaker 1: so it is very kind of important and sentimental to me.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I haven't lived there since I was a young child.
- 5:51Speaker 1: And as much as I love it, and I really
- 5:54Speaker 1: do love it, for some messed up reason I could
- 5:56Speaker 1: never move back there because I am far too poor
- 6:01Speaker 1: to even live in the shittiest areas of the Bronx
- 6:04Speaker 1: where I'm from. So yeah, it sucks. Like I could
- 6:07Speaker 1: buy like a studio apartment and then I'd still have
- 6:10Speaker 1: to pay like seven eight hundred dollars a month in
- 6:14Speaker 1: HOA fees, Like how is that even possible for people?
- 6:18Speaker 1: So what I'm saying is the New York today is
- 6:23Speaker 1: a totally different world than it was in the seventies
- 6:25Speaker 1: and eighties and nineties. Really, New York in the eighties
- 6:29Speaker 1: was horribly overrun with crime, Like it was really bad.
- 6:33Speaker 1: So a lot of what happens in Banana Fish, you know,
- 6:37Speaker 1: sort of makes sense with New York City in that
- 6:41Speaker 1: time period. In the twenty tens, New York is one
- 6:45Speaker 1: of the safest cities in America. It really still is,
- 6:48Speaker 1: even though people think that it got worse. Everything got
- 6:51Speaker 1: worse in the country, but New York got worse in
- 6:54Speaker 1: a way that Philly wished it could get worse, like barely,
- 6:58Speaker 1: and like there are connections with the mafia and stuff
- 7:01Speaker 1: that really don't exist the same way that they did
- 7:04Speaker 1: in that time period. So I wish that it wasn't changed.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I think that that is a cardinal mistake, and if
- 7:12Speaker 1: I could direct it, I would have just said it
- 7:15Speaker 1: in eighty five, because I don't think anyone would have,
- 7:17Speaker 1: you know, blinked. Really, it's not like we don't have
- 7:20Speaker 1: shows set in the Viking era or the nineteen twenties
- 7:24Speaker 1: or something. It's another cool, interesting time period. We could
- 7:29Speaker 1: have done it. So now that I've complained about that,
- 7:33Speaker 1: I'll give you some information about the folks who were
- 7:36Speaker 1: involved with the production. So the director was Utsumi Hiroko,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and he hasn't directed that much, but he did direct
- 7:45Speaker 1: Skate the Infinity, which I actually really liked and I
- 7:48Speaker 1: believe is getting a second season, so yeah, that was fun.
- 7:53Speaker 1: He also did key animation, episode direction or storyboards on
- 7:57Speaker 1: Clan Ed and Klanad The After Story, Bungo, Stray Dogs,
- 8:01Speaker 1: and Chaon, and it looks like he directed Bucci Giri
- 8:05Speaker 1: at the beginning of the year, which I heard was
- 8:07Speaker 1: not very good, but whatever. On series composition and screenplay,
- 8:12Speaker 1: we have my absolutely favorite series comp person, Hirochi Seco,
- 8:16Speaker 1: which you would know from Jujitsu, Kaizen, Chainsawman, Mob, Psycho
- 8:20Speaker 1: one hundred. He's responsible for script or series composition of
- 8:25Speaker 1: the upcoming Dondadan anime. So he just always does a
- 8:31Speaker 1: fantastic job. And I actually couldn't figure out who it
- 8:34Speaker 1: was until yesterday and then I was like, oh my god,
- 8:36Speaker 1: it's hirochie Seco. So whatever. For character design, we have
- 8:41Speaker 1: Hayashi a Kemi, who did an okay job. Honestly, I'm
- 8:47Speaker 1: a little not thrilled with the designs because they weren't
- 8:51Speaker 1: updated well enough like the main cast, Like the core
- 8:54Speaker 1: main characters, most of them got design updates to match
- 8:58Speaker 1: with the twenty tens, but all of the background characters
- 9:01Speaker 1: look like they're in nineteen seventies or nineteen eighties New
- 9:03Speaker 1: York and it's very, very off putting and confusing. So
- 9:07Speaker 1: when you're watching this, and I've heard this from several
- 9:10Speaker 1: people now that it feels really nostalgic, and that's probably
- 9:14Speaker 1: one of the reasons. And if you kind of watch
- 9:17Speaker 1: this and not think of it as twenty ten, twenty fifteen,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and you think of it as eighty five, but for
- 9:23Speaker 1: some reason they have cell phones, it's actually going to
- 9:25Speaker 1: serve you a lot better. But yeah, so not thrilled
- 9:29Speaker 1: with the character designs, But what are you gonna do?
- 9:33Speaker 1: So that's really all I need to tell you about
- 9:36Speaker 1: Banana Fish. Before we start, you have hopefully already listened
- 9:40Speaker 1: to the content warning, and if you haven't, best of luck,
- 9:45Speaker 1: I don't know what to tell you. So before we
- 9:48Speaker 1: go any further, I just wanted to talk a little
- 9:50Speaker 1: bit about show Jo, because this is the first time
- 9:54Speaker 1: that we have watched covered whatever a show Jo anime
- 9:59Speaker 1: and and you know, we've spent all our time on
- 10:02Speaker 1: showon In and Sanin and those are good, they're just
- 10:06Speaker 1: different demographics. So if you don't know what shojo, anime
- 10:10Speaker 1: and manga even is, I will break down the categories
- 10:13Speaker 1: for you. Sanan is for adult males, shown In is
- 10:19Speaker 1: for teens and young adult men, Joe Say is for
- 10:24Speaker 1: adult women, and Shojo is for teen and young adult women.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So we are in the younger girls category. And the first,
- 10:35Speaker 1: like the earliest show Jo that we have record of,
- 10:37Speaker 1: was in the early nineteen hundreds. Of course, looked kind
- 10:40Speaker 1: of different than it does today, and it kind of
- 10:42Speaker 1: formalized in the nineteen fifties and at that point, really
- 10:47Speaker 1: all shojo was written and drawn by men for young women,
- 10:53Speaker 1: which is interesting. It wasn't until the sixties and seventies,
- 10:57Speaker 1: that kind of a new wave of women artists started
- 11:00Speaker 1: getting involved in shojo and it became very very female dominated,
- 11:05Speaker 1: and it is to this day. I don't really know
- 11:07Speaker 1: if there are men writing showjo. There are definitely women
- 11:11Speaker 1: writing shownen and you know, sanan and stuff, but it
- 11:16Speaker 1: doesn't seem to go the other way. And that might
- 11:19Speaker 1: be because media for girls is not taken very seriously,
- 11:24Speaker 1: and that is in this country and in Japan, and
- 11:26Speaker 1: that's kind of why. Like that Akimi Yoshida quote that
- 11:30Speaker 1: I just read, she explained that she could do a
- 11:33Speaker 1: lot of things because she was kind of not being
- 11:37Speaker 1: watched as much. Yeah, you can do or at least
- 11:41Speaker 1: you could do a lot more in shojo because it
- 11:44Speaker 1: wasn't really watched, it wasn't taken seriously. And I know
- 11:48Speaker 1: that we're still not taking it seriously in the West,
- 11:51Speaker 1: at least some of us. I was recently on Twitter
- 11:55Speaker 1: x whatever the fuck, and someone happened to post a
- 11:58Speaker 1: picture of a tape in a bookstore that had a
- 12:02Speaker 1: sign that said essential Manga on it, and on the
- 12:04Speaker 1: table was just shown in insane in manga, and they
- 12:07Speaker 1: were like, where's the showjo. Now, it would be nice
- 12:10Speaker 1: to have all demographics represented, but who knows who put
- 12:14Speaker 1: this together. Just some person who really likes these things
- 12:17Speaker 1: so put them on the table. I don't think there's
- 12:19Speaker 1: anything wrong with that. It's not something I'm upset about.
- 12:21Speaker 1: What I am upset about is the comments, and there
- 12:25Speaker 1: were plenty of them suggesting that shojo is not something
- 12:29Speaker 1: that is suited for anyone outside of young girls, and
- 12:33Speaker 1: the same doesn't go for shown in. Shown In is
- 12:36Speaker 1: for everyone, but shojo is just for girls, because why
- 12:41Speaker 1: would a guy read girl media? And that is a
- 12:44Speaker 1: problem for everyone. That's a problem for women, and it's
- 12:47Speaker 1: a problem for men too, because then you miss out
- 12:49Speaker 1: on a lot of cool things if you really feel
- 12:52Speaker 1: that way, or you don't feel like you're allowed to
- 12:56Speaker 1: like things, and that's not fair. Everyone should be able
- 13:00Speaker 1: to kind of intermix and enjoy all of these genres.
- 13:04Speaker 1: So I don't know where I'm going with this. What
- 13:07Speaker 1: I wanted to say is that this is my home demographic.
- 13:13Speaker 1: I am sort of a female sort of thing person.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I'm not totally but a little bit not kind of,
- 13:20Speaker 1: and I, for lack of a better term, grew up
- 13:23Speaker 1: on shojo with stuff like Magic Night, Ray Earth and
- 13:28Speaker 1: Fushigi Yugi and Sailor Moon. So this all feels very
- 13:34Speaker 1: normal to me. And if you are not used to
- 13:39Speaker 1: reading or watching these kind of stories, you may hit
- 13:41Speaker 1: into tropes that you are not familiar with that are
- 13:44Speaker 1: off putting. And if we run into them, I will
- 13:47Speaker 1: try to go over them, but be aware that things
- 13:50Speaker 1: are going to be a little different than what you're
- 13:52Speaker 1: used to if you're just used to like battle shown
- 13:54Speaker 1: in anyway, it's nice to get back into some showjo. Honestly,
- 13:58Speaker 1: it made me feel so home. Oh my god, guys,
- 14:04Speaker 1: I'm like gushing about this and then we're gonna actually
- 14:06Speaker 1: get into it and you're just gonna be like, what
- 14:07Speaker 1: the fuck? So yeah, anyway, I think that's really all
- 14:11Speaker 1: I wanted to say about it. It's been about eighteen
- 14:13Speaker 1: minutes or something crazy, so we really should stop talking
- 14:17Speaker 1: about it and just get into the fucking episode. So
- 14:21Speaker 1: episode one of Banana Fish is called a Perfect Day
- 14:24Speaker 1: for Banana Fish. Yeah, all of the episode titles besides
- 14:29Speaker 1: this one are based on literature written by Lost Generation writers,
- 14:36Speaker 1: so we'll try to talk about that. Technically, this title
- 14:39Speaker 1: is too, but it'll come up in the episode, so
- 14:42Speaker 1: we don't need to. Here we go, So we start
- 14:46Speaker 1: the episode with a black title screen that just says
- 14:48Speaker 1: banana fish in yellow, and it's there for like a
- 14:51Speaker 1: really long time, like too long, and then we cut
- 14:54Speaker 1: to a sky, you know, like a blue sky with
- 14:57Speaker 1: like some clouds, and there's some sort of wrap type
- 15:00Speaker 1: bird flying and it kind of looks like it could
- 15:02Speaker 1: be a bald eagle because the head is a different
- 15:04Speaker 1: color than the body, but it's like far away, so
- 15:06Speaker 1: I can't really tell. And also it's making these sounds
- 15:09Speaker 1: that are like hawk sounds, not eagle sounds, because eagles
- 15:13Speaker 1: make like cheap, cheap sounds. They actually don't sound that
- 15:16Speaker 1: scary at all, and this guy is like sounds like
- 15:20Speaker 1: a bird of prey that you are used to hearing
- 15:23Speaker 1: in like movies and stuff. So then we come down
- 15:27Speaker 1: and we cut to three military tanks driving through the
- 15:31Speaker 1: desert and we kind of like pass some discarded military
- 15:35Speaker 1: gloves and boots and stuff, which it's just like fucking
- 15:38Speaker 1: pick those up, guys, And then we cut to a fire,
- 15:43Speaker 1: like a campfire at night, and there is a group
- 15:46Speaker 1: of guys and they're camping out in this partially bombed
- 15:49Speaker 1: out building, and some dude is just singing, oh my darling, Clementine,
- 15:54Speaker 1: but just oh my darling, oh my darling, Oh my darling, Clementine,
- 15:58Speaker 1: just that part over and over again, and the manga
- 16:01Speaker 1: someone asked him what the fuck is his problem? And
- 16:03Speaker 1: he's like, that's the only line I know, But they
- 16:05Speaker 1: don't do that in the anime. So the guy that
- 16:08Speaker 1: was singing stops and he looks into the distance where
- 16:10Speaker 1: it looks kind of light on the horizon, and he says,
- 16:13Speaker 1: bombing's starting again, and he lights a cigarette. Another guy
- 16:17Speaker 1: says it's been like this ever since the occupation. The
- 16:21Speaker 1: first guy exhales some smoke and he's like, I can't
- 16:25Speaker 1: wait to get back to the States. And another guy,
- 16:28Speaker 1: who might be the second guy but I wasn't sure,
- 16:30Speaker 1: said did you hear about that drug? And the first
- 16:32Speaker 1: guy's like the one that killed Billy? I hope not,
- 16:36Speaker 1: And guy too says I heard he suffered pretty horribly.
- 16:39Speaker 1: And another guy's like, poor dude, he didn't deserve to
- 16:41Speaker 1: go out like that. And the first guy, I think,
- 16:45Speaker 1: looks around and he's like, hey, where's Griffin. And then
- 16:48Speaker 1: we see a guy kind of appear in a doorway
- 16:52Speaker 1: and the first guy's like, damn it, Griffin, don't scare
- 16:55Speaker 1: us Like that, Griffin is standing still in the doorway,
- 17:00Speaker 1: looking at them blankly, and the second guy says, that
- 17:04Speaker 1: was one long piss and Griffin walks into the room
- 17:09Speaker 1: and the first guy's like, just three days and we're
- 17:12Speaker 1: out of here, and another guy's like, hey, what's wrong?
- 17:15Speaker 1: And Guy one is like, what are you gonna do
- 17:18Speaker 1: after and the second guy's like, you know. And while
- 17:21Speaker 1: this is happening, Griffin reaches down and he grabs a
- 17:25Speaker 1: rifle and he takes the safety off. Oh. Guy one
- 17:31Speaker 1: notices something is wrong, but before he can do anything,
- 17:35Speaker 1: Griffin just starts shooting wildly at them and like screaming
- 17:39Speaker 1: while he's doing it, which doesn't make me concerned at all.
- 17:43Speaker 1: So the group of people are just getting shot to
- 17:47Speaker 1: fucking death, and the first guy is like Griffin and
- 17:50Speaker 1: the second guy pulls him behind a wall and he's like,
- 17:53Speaker 1: dumb ass, get back. So Guy one and Guy two
- 17:56Speaker 1: are hiding while Griffin is just murdering everyone else, and
- 18:00Speaker 1: Guy one takes a breath and you know, aims, and
- 18:04Speaker 1: while Griffin is busy killing his friends shoots him in
- 18:08Speaker 1: both legs. Yeah, I guess. Griffin drops the gun and
- 18:13Speaker 1: falls to the ground, and we see that everyone is
- 18:18Speaker 1: on the ground covered in blood, probably dead, except for
- 18:22Speaker 1: those two guys. So the two guys approached Griffin, who
- 18:26Speaker 1: is just sitting there bleeding from his legs, and Guy
- 18:31Speaker 1: Too is like, you, bastard, how could you? And he
- 18:33Speaker 1: tries to like attack Griffin, but Guy one, like pretty
- 18:37Speaker 1: calmly stops him and kneels in front of Griffin and
- 18:40Speaker 1: then he says, gryffin callan reyes, do you know who
- 18:43Speaker 1: I am? It's Max, your buddy, Okay, his name's Max. Finally,
- 18:48Speaker 1: Griffin looks so out of it and like drool is
- 18:51Speaker 1: running down his face and he says banana and Max
- 18:56Speaker 1: is like what and Griffin just has this like intense
- 19:02Speaker 1: fear in his eyes and he says banana fish and
- 19:06Speaker 1: they stare him in shock. And then we cut to
- 19:11Speaker 1: the Statue of Liberty. So we've established where we are
- 19:14Speaker 1: where on the East Coast, probably in New York, even
- 19:16Speaker 1: though the statue liberties in New Jersey. I assume that's
- 19:20Speaker 1: what they were trying to get us to understand. From there,
- 19:23Speaker 1: we go to a dark, heavily graffitied alley that's kind
- 19:26Speaker 1: of green, like it's got a really nice green overtone.
- 19:29Speaker 1: I actually forgot that I really like the background art
- 19:32Speaker 1: in the show, or I didn't realize that. Anyway, it's
- 19:34Speaker 1: a cool alley, and we hear sirens kind of in
- 19:38Speaker 1: the background. They're not close, They're just kind of ambience.
- 19:41Speaker 1: And it's important that I tell you before we move on.
- 19:44Speaker 1: There are only four alleys in all of New York City. Four.
- 19:48Speaker 1: There is no way this works in real life here.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I don't know what everyone's obsession is with having alleys
- 19:55Speaker 1: in New York City or why New York City doesn't
- 19:57Speaker 1: have alleys, But if you want to set your ceedy,
- 20:04Speaker 1: weird thing in an alley, don't do it in New York.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Do it in another city, like Philly or Boston or
- 20:12Speaker 1: Pittsburgh or probably Milwaukee, or like literally any other city
- 20:16Speaker 1: that has alleys. Plus, this show would have worked better
- 20:19Speaker 1: in Detroit or Philly or Chicago anyway, because they are
- 20:25Speaker 1: still incredibly crime written cities. Sorry everybody, they are anyway.
- 20:31Speaker 1: So we're in a fictional alley that probably doesn't really
- 20:34Speaker 1: exist in New York. Someone walks through a puddle. We
- 20:38Speaker 1: can see he has red like Chuck Taylor's on and
- 20:42Speaker 1: he is walking and he has a hood up, so
- 20:45Speaker 1: we can't see exactly what he looks like. And there
- 20:47Speaker 1: is some like steam there for a second, like maybe
- 20:49Speaker 1: he crossed the steam grate. I wasn't really sure, and
- 20:53Speaker 1: he stops and turns back for a second and then
- 20:56Speaker 1: continues to walk, and he comes around a corner and
- 20:59Speaker 1: he sees someone like stumbling towards him, and we get
- 21:03Speaker 1: a low shot of this person, so we really don't
- 21:05Speaker 1: see what they look like. We just see like shaky legs,
- 21:08Speaker 1: and then we see the man collapse and he's wearing
- 21:10Speaker 1: a suit, and the guy who sees this we get
- 21:14Speaker 1: kind of a better look at him. He has green eyes,
- 21:18Speaker 1: he has blonde hair. He's wearing a blue jacket with
- 21:20Speaker 1: like a gray hoodie underneath and ripped up jeans. So
- 21:24Speaker 1: he runs over, and the guy in the suit looks
- 21:28Speaker 1: real fucked up, like he's got blood all over him
- 21:31Speaker 1: and stuff, and he looks beat up, and he starts
- 21:33Speaker 1: to reach out towards the blonde guy and he's like,
- 21:35Speaker 1: help me, and the blonde guy takes off his hood
- 21:39Speaker 1: and leans down and is like, are you okay? And
- 21:41Speaker 1: then he sees that he's covered in blood and he's like, yeah,
- 21:44Speaker 1: I guess not. And the suit guy reaches up towards
- 21:47Speaker 1: him and he says, take this, and he hands him
- 21:50Speaker 1: something and we really don't see what it is, and
- 21:53Speaker 1: the suit guy says forty two westward Los Angeles, and
- 21:57Speaker 1: then it sounds like he says something else, but we
- 21:59Speaker 1: don't know what it is. It's like mumbled or something,
- 22:02Speaker 1: and the blonde guy looks shocked by whatever he said
- 22:06Speaker 1: and he's like, hey, how do you know that? Hey?
- 22:09Speaker 1: And the guy is no longer responding because he's probably dead.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And then in the other direction, we see two guys approaching.
- 22:16Speaker 1: All these characters are pretty young, like maybe they're in
- 22:18Speaker 1: their late teens or their early twenties, and the first
- 22:21Speaker 1: guy who's approaching says this way, and the blonde guy's like,
- 22:25Speaker 1: what the fuck is going on? And the two guys
- 22:28Speaker 1: who just got there see him and jump, and the
- 22:31Speaker 1: second guy says boss, and the first guy's like why,
- 22:36Speaker 1: and the blonde guy's like answer me, and the guy's
- 22:39Speaker 1: flinch and the second guy looks at the first guy
- 22:42Speaker 1: and shakes his head. No. But then they hear what
- 22:46Speaker 1: is possibly the safety being removed from the gun in
- 22:49Speaker 1: the blonde guy's pocket, and the second guy's like, wait, boss,
- 22:53Speaker 1: don't shoot, and the first guy says it was Dino.
- 22:56Speaker 1: He told us to and the blonde guy's like he did.
- 23:00Speaker 1: And then they hear police sirens, this time definitely approaching,
- 23:04Speaker 1: and the blonde guys like, get lost, I'll talk to Dino.
- 23:07Speaker 1: The two guys take off running, and the blonde guy
- 23:10Speaker 1: puts his hood back up, looks down at the suit guy,
- 23:13Speaker 1: who is really probably dead at this point, and runs
- 23:16Speaker 1: in the other direction down the alley. Then we cut
- 23:19Speaker 1: to the exterior of a mansion, like a really big
- 23:22Speaker 1: mansion with a waterfall in front and like a gate
- 23:24Speaker 1: and shit. And it is in North called Well, New Jersey.
- 23:28Speaker 1: It does not say that in the anime, but in
- 23:30Speaker 1: the manga they make that very clear. Why am I
- 23:32Speaker 1: telling you this because it's important. North called Well, New
- 23:36Speaker 1: Jersey is in Essex County and it is technically a
- 23:39Speaker 1: rich suburb of New York City. If you're like, I
- 23:42Speaker 1: wonder why that sounds familiar, Well, it's because that's where
- 23:45Speaker 1: the Sopranos House was. Why this coincidence. I have no
- 23:50Speaker 1: idea actually, and don't forget that this all was before
- 23:54Speaker 1: the Sopranos, so it's not a reference to it or something,
- 23:57Speaker 1: so I think it's just kind of a happy accident. Anyway,
- 24:01Speaker 1: we see this kind of olderish, you know, middle aged
- 24:04Speaker 1: guy who is wearing sunglasses and standing like out in
- 24:08Speaker 1: front of the house, like on a porch, and he's
- 24:11Speaker 1: wearing like a brown suit, and he's singing something to himself,
- 24:14Speaker 1: but I don't know what he's singing, and he's like
- 24:17Speaker 1: smoking a cigarette. So the guy looks up and he
- 24:21Speaker 1: is kind of shocked and then kind of chuckles to
- 24:23Speaker 1: himself as he sees that that blonde guy is approaching.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Nobody has names yet, and it's very frustrating. And then
- 24:33Speaker 1: and he says, Ash, what are you doing awake this early?
- 24:37Speaker 1: And the blonde guy, whose name is Ash thank god, says,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I came to see the old man. Old people get
- 24:44Speaker 1: up early in the morning, so I figured. And he
- 24:46Speaker 1: kind of scratches his head and walks forward, and then
- 24:50Speaker 1: he says he's in right, and the older guy is like, hey,
- 24:54Speaker 1: watch your mouth. You call him Popadino, get it? And
- 24:58Speaker 1: Ash is like, I came here to cedno, not you,
- 25:02Speaker 1: and he walks past him. The older guy's like hey,
- 25:05Speaker 1: and Ash stops and the older guy's like, aren't you
- 25:08Speaker 1: gonna make any more of those videos? Huh? Maybe Ash
- 25:11Speaker 1: is an aspiring film director, and he continues, I was
- 25:15Speaker 1: a fan of yours, you know. He kind of chuckles
- 25:17Speaker 1: and says, even now, I could still it kind of
- 25:21Speaker 1: trails off. Okay, and Ash, who is almost completely off
- 25:26Speaker 1: screen at the moment so we can't see his reaction
- 25:29Speaker 1: to this, says, you scumbag, and the older guy's like what,
- 25:35Speaker 1: And Ash says, you're a scumbag, Marvin, and he kind
- 25:39Speaker 1: of turns back to Marvin, who's the older guy, I guess,
- 25:41Speaker 1: and he like half smiles and says, you're a pig.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Now before we continue, if you watched the anime and
- 25:49Speaker 1: you watched it on like Amazon Farm or something, you
- 25:52Speaker 1: may realize that my choice of words was different than
- 25:54Speaker 1: what you saw in these subtitles, because what you saw
- 25:57Speaker 1: in those subtitles was probably a slow or for gay people.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Now why did I change it? Well, because I was
- 26:05Speaker 1: thinking and I was like, I wonder if this is
- 26:07Speaker 1: really what he's saying. So this morning I bought the
- 26:13Speaker 1: first copy of the untranslated manga because in the English
- 26:18Speaker 1: manga he's not saying that. So I figured somebody's taking
- 26:23Speaker 1: license here, and I don't know who. So I bought,
- 26:27Speaker 1: you know, the first issue of the Japanese version of
- 26:29Speaker 1: the manga for like a dollar thirty or something. Thank
- 26:32Speaker 1: god it was cheap, and went through this section and
- 26:36Speaker 1: found out that the word that Ash is using is guessuyado,
- 26:40Speaker 1: I believe, which just means scumbag or asshole or something
- 26:45Speaker 1: like that. It is not an attack on someone's sexuality,
- 26:49Speaker 1: so yes. And then I thought, well, that doesn't mean
- 26:53Speaker 1: that that's not what he's saying in the anime. So
- 26:56Speaker 1: I watched this scene again and I clearly heard him
- 26:59Speaker 1: say guess u YadA. So yes, that is a really
- 27:03Speaker 1: interesting liberty that the translator is taking. And I'm assuming
- 27:08Speaker 1: they did it for a reason, but I don't think
- 27:11Speaker 1: the reason is good enough to do that, because you
- 27:15Speaker 1: can use so many words here that would piss someone
- 27:19Speaker 1: off that aren't a slur. And I'm not saying there
- 27:24Speaker 1: aren't slurs using this show at all. I'm just saying,
- 27:27Speaker 1: why would you put another one in there if you
- 27:29Speaker 1: didn't need to and it was wrong, so I just
- 27:32Speaker 1: wanted you to know that. Anyway, It still pisses off Marvin,
- 27:36Speaker 1: even though he didn't call him that, and he says,
- 27:38Speaker 1: you little brat, shit if Papatina didn't like you so much,
- 27:42Speaker 1: And we cut to Ash and some other dude who
- 27:44Speaker 1: are like walking through a hallway now. And this other
- 27:48Speaker 1: dude who I don't ever know, if I ever really
- 27:50Speaker 1: figure out what his name is, he knocks on this
- 27:53Speaker 1: really really nice wooden door and he says, Papa Ash
- 27:59Speaker 1: is here, and someone who's probably Dino from inside the
- 28:04Speaker 1: room says, come in, and that guy opens the door
- 28:07Speaker 1: and Ash walks into the room and Dino says, morning Ash.
- 28:12Speaker 1: And he's sitting at a table eating breakfast, and there's
- 28:15Speaker 1: like a butler standing there too, and he's either bald
- 28:18Speaker 1: or has like a really cleanly shaved head, kind of
- 28:21Speaker 1: an older guy, and he's wearing a robe kind of
- 28:24Speaker 1: heavier set, and he says, I was just having breakfast.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Care to join me? And he is eating two sunnyside
- 28:32Speaker 1: up eggs and something that looks like Canadian bacon maybe
- 28:36Speaker 1: or ham, I don't know, And also there was like
- 28:39Speaker 1: two slices of what looked like potato maybe, and also
- 28:43Speaker 1: a piece of broccoli, so that's weird. And Ash's like,
- 28:47Speaker 1: I'm here for business. Dino says, I've told you over
- 28:50Speaker 1: and over to take your hands out of your pockets
- 28:52Speaker 1: when you talk to me. I guess Ash has his
- 28:53Speaker 1: hands in his pockets, and then he continues, you want
- 28:56Speaker 1: my men to take it off for you? Is that
- 28:58Speaker 1: a threat? Ash sighs and takes off his jacket and says,
- 29:03Speaker 1: why'd you make them do it? And Dino's like, go
- 29:05Speaker 1: behind your back. That wasn't nobody, He wasn't worth your time.
- 29:10Speaker 1: At that point, Ash fucking slams the food and everything
- 29:14Speaker 1: off the table and he's like, nobody, a man's dead.
- 29:17Speaker 1: And two dudes hear the commotion and they come inside
- 29:20Speaker 1: the room with their guns raised, and Dino's like, it's fine,
- 29:23Speaker 1: wait outside, and they leave, and so does the waiter.
- 29:27Speaker 1: So now Ash and Dina are alone, and Dino says,
- 29:31Speaker 1: calm down, Ash, I'm sorry I left you out. Ash
- 29:35Speaker 1: turns and walks away from the table and he's like,
- 29:37Speaker 1: that's so not it, and he sits on the couch
- 29:41Speaker 1: and he says, you promised you wouldn't kill anyone. Dino
- 29:45Speaker 1: is like, this was an exception. He was a rat,
- 29:48Speaker 1: not a member of the syndicate, and he starts to
- 29:51Speaker 1: walk over to Ash and says, that's why I had
- 29:55Speaker 1: them do it. He puts his hand on the top
- 29:57Speaker 1: of the couch kind of near Ash and says, but
- 30:01Speaker 1: how did you find out? Ash looks kinda sad, maybe,
- 30:06Speaker 1: and he says the guys were acting weird, so I
- 30:09Speaker 1: was keeping an eye on them, and Diino says, good,
- 30:12Speaker 1: that's how you be a boss. I knew you were
- 30:14Speaker 1: cut out to be a leader. At this point, he
- 30:16Speaker 1: puts his hand on Ash's right shoulder and caresses it slightly.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Maybe I don't have a better word for what is happening,
- 30:25Speaker 1: and then Dino says, do put that right arm to
- 30:27Speaker 1: use for me? Yeah? I don't. I'm not sure what
- 30:31Speaker 1: that means for what. Ash chuckles and says, sure, I'll
- 30:37Speaker 1: help you walk, And Dino's like, I see you've acquired
- 30:40Speaker 1: a bit of cockiness. Used to cry like a baby
- 30:43Speaker 1: every time I gave you a task? What? And Ash
- 30:47Speaker 1: is like, I guess I have a bad memory. Dino says,
- 30:51Speaker 1: is that so, well, there's something you shouldn't forget I
- 30:54Speaker 1: took you off the streets. Remember that. Oh we have
- 30:58Speaker 1: another former homeless character, one of my favorite types. I'm
- 31:03Speaker 1: so excited. And then he puts his hand on Ash's
- 31:06Speaker 1: cheek and Ash like doesn't react or move at all,
- 31:12Speaker 1: Andantino continues, you know, I love you, sweetheart, and he
- 31:17Speaker 1: actually uses the word isi teru for like love, and
- 31:21Speaker 1: I was like, what like? Cause in Japan, like you
- 31:26Speaker 1: almost never say I love you like aishataru, even say
- 31:29Speaker 1: like you like the person. But love is like not
- 31:32Speaker 1: something you really throw around. But then again, this is
- 31:35Speaker 1: set in the US, so we do say love a lot,
- 31:38Speaker 1: but I thought it was weird. Anyway, that's enough of that.
- 31:42Speaker 1: We cut to a street sign that says East Ninth Street.
- 31:45Speaker 1: I could tell you that we are in the lower
- 31:47Speaker 1: East Side of Manhattan. Ash is outside leaning on a
- 31:51Speaker 1: motorcycle that is parked in front of a diner of
- 31:54Speaker 1: some sort maybe, And this is kind of when I
- 31:57Speaker 1: realized that the backgrounds are actually really nice. And he
- 32:00Speaker 1: is looking at his phone, maybe texting someone, and drinking
- 32:03Speaker 1: soda out of a plastic bottle that soda would come in,
- 32:06Speaker 1: and a voice says Ash, and we see this kind
- 32:10Speaker 1: of you know teen or early twenties dude with sunglasses
- 32:14Speaker 1: and eyebrow piercing and a purple mohawk, awesome chewing gum.
- 32:18Speaker 1: As he approaches and Ashes like, yo, Shorter, that's not
- 32:21Speaker 1: a great name. And Shorter says, why are you up
- 32:24Speaker 1: so early? Did something happen? And Ash is like, not really,
- 32:27Speaker 1: I just went to see you, old Mandino, And Shorter
- 32:29Speaker 1: is like, so, I'm guessing you butted heads with Marvin again.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Ash drinks from his soda bottle and then size and
- 32:37Speaker 1: Shorter is like, be careful with him. He's vindictive and gay. Okay, sure,
- 32:45Speaker 1: let's just put that in there, and Shorter continues he's
- 32:50Speaker 1: got a thing for green eyed blondes. Sure. Ash tosses
- 32:54Speaker 1: his bottle into the trash can and gets on the motorcycle,
- 32:59Speaker 1: which I guess is his, and says, stop worrying, or
- 33:02Speaker 1: you're gonna go wald. And then he puts on his
- 33:07Speaker 1: helmets and he starts his bike and says see you
- 33:11Speaker 1: and rides off, and Shorter smiles and kind of rubs
- 33:14Speaker 1: his hair and says, I'll definitely go bald. Huh. Then
- 33:19Speaker 1: we cut to another street with a bunch of closed
- 33:23Speaker 1: and shuttered storefronts on the block, and we see that
- 33:26Speaker 1: there are apartments above them, and there's like lots of
- 33:28Speaker 1: graffiti and stuff, and ash knocks on the door. I
- 33:32Speaker 1: think the door's green, but I don't remember, and I
- 33:36Speaker 1: didn't write it down, and a small, like young black
- 33:40Speaker 1: kid opens the door, like really cautiously, and he looks
- 33:43Speaker 1: younger than he does in the manger for some reason,
- 33:45Speaker 1: and also more like he's in the seventies than he
- 33:48Speaker 1: did in the manga. But whatever, So the kid sees
- 33:51Speaker 1: him and is like, boss, you're back early. They both
- 33:54Speaker 1: walk inside and we see that like maybe it's a
- 33:57Speaker 1: studio apartment. There's a bed in the room. It's kind
- 33:59Speaker 1: of sparse but clean, but also like dingy, like it's
- 34:04Speaker 1: never actually going to be clean because it's a rental,
- 34:07Speaker 1: and the dirt is just ingrained in the fabric of
- 34:11Speaker 1: the apartment now because it hasn't been taken care of.
- 34:15Speaker 1: And there are kind of brick walls, and I believe
- 34:17Speaker 1: they are painted white. At first, I thought there was
- 34:20Speaker 1: a parge coat on them, but in other scenes it
- 34:22Speaker 1: looks like they're just white painted brick walls. So whatever,
- 34:25Speaker 1: I'm sorry I told you that, but I'm a home inspector,
- 34:28Speaker 1: so I'll like to notice things whatever. So Ash says,
- 34:32Speaker 1: any news. He sets his jacket on a chair and
- 34:35Speaker 1: he sits on the bed, and the boy says, Charlie
- 34:38Speaker 1: called and said the Japanese guys are coming the day
- 34:40Speaker 1: after tomorrow, and Ash is like for the magazine, but
- 34:44Speaker 1: I said no, and the boy kind of chuckles and
- 34:47Speaker 1: he's like, but the cops will owe you one now,
- 34:49Speaker 1: and he winks and Ash sighs, and he's like, fine,
- 34:52Speaker 1: anything else, and the boy says no, same as usual,
- 34:56Speaker 1: and he looks over at an interior door and says
- 34:59Speaker 1: him too the door. And Ash's like, okay, cool, thanks Skip,
- 35:03Speaker 1: and he puts his hand in his pocket and Skip
- 35:06Speaker 1: is learning to put on his jacket and he says
- 35:08Speaker 1: it's something wrong, and Ash's like, no, no, it's nothing,
- 35:12Speaker 1: and he hands him some cash and Skip takes it
- 35:14Speaker 1: and thanks him and turns to leave, and then turns
- 35:17Speaker 1: back and says, hey, rumor has it that Arthur's got
- 35:20Speaker 1: something to do with what happens? And Ash's like, yeah,
- 35:23Speaker 1: I figured I'll have to settle things with him sometime soon.
- 35:26Speaker 1: See you, Skip, And Skip also says goodbye and leaves
- 35:30Speaker 1: and Ash reaches into his pocket again and takes out
- 35:34Speaker 1: a necklace. Then we go to Dino, who is in
- 35:37Speaker 1: a greenhouse watering orchids, and the door opens loudly and
- 35:43Speaker 1: he turns to see an out of breath man with
- 35:45Speaker 1: red hair and glasses, and Heno's like, careful with the doors,
- 35:49Speaker 1: you're gonna hurt my orchids. And the guy is like,
- 35:52Speaker 1: to hell with your orchids. That's mean it's it's gone,
- 35:56Speaker 1: and Heino's like what. And then we cut back to Ash,
- 36:00Speaker 1: who is still sitting in that room, and he's rolling
- 36:03Speaker 1: this necklace with this charm that kind of looks like
- 36:05Speaker 1: a bullet it's like bullet shaped charm on it. He's
- 36:08Speaker 1: like rolling it on the desk and he kind of
- 36:10Speaker 1: flicks it and then he picks it up and shakes
- 36:12Speaker 1: it and it rattles, and he's like oh, and he
- 36:15Speaker 1: struggles to kind of get it open and the top
- 36:17Speaker 1: comes off and inside there's a tiny bottle of white powder.
- 36:22Speaker 1: He kind of exhales and opens the door to the
- 36:25Speaker 1: other room. So now we know it's not a studio.
- 36:28Speaker 1: It's actually a one bedroom. This is the bedroom, and
- 36:31Speaker 1: there's someone sitting in a wheelchair inside and we can't
- 36:35Speaker 1: see this person's face, and Ash says, what's this banana
- 36:39Speaker 1: fish keep mentioning? He kind of gets on his knees
- 36:42Speaker 1: and he's like, I'm begging you. The man said it
- 36:45Speaker 1: before he died too, Okay, that's what the guy said. Anyway,
- 36:49Speaker 1: We cut to that guy in the suit saying banana fish,
- 36:52Speaker 1: and Ash says, did this banana fish do this to you?
- 36:56Speaker 1: And he looks up at him like pleadingly, and he's like,
- 37:00Speaker 1: say's something Griffin, Oh my god, is the dude from
- 37:03Speaker 1: that first scene who killed everybody? And then we see
- 37:07Speaker 1: him and he looks like he's not there anymore, like
- 37:11Speaker 1: there's just nothing, you know, behind his eyes. Then we
- 37:14Speaker 1: are somewhere else and we see someone put their hand
- 37:17Speaker 1: on the glass and an airplane taking off, and we
- 37:23Speaker 1: kind of pull back and it's this dude, also kind
- 37:26Speaker 1: of teen's early twenties looking dude with you know, black
- 37:30Speaker 1: hair and kind of really dark brown eyes and luggage
- 37:34Speaker 1: and he's looking out an airport window, maybe at JFK,
- 37:37Speaker 1: but we don't get specification, and someone from behind him
- 37:42Speaker 1: says a chan and I guess we're gonna call this
- 37:45Speaker 1: dude chan for a little while he is startled. And
- 37:49Speaker 1: the other guy is older and he is brown hair
- 37:52Speaker 1: and a beard, and he's like, you coming, and a
- 37:54Speaker 1: Chan runs to meet him and is like, oh yeah.
- 37:57Speaker 1: And then we see the city skyline as night fades
- 38:01Speaker 1: into morning, and we cut to a robin on a
- 38:04Speaker 1: chain link fence looking over as two gun shots ring out,
- 38:08Speaker 1: and of course the robin flies away because that's really scary,
- 38:13Speaker 1: and the aperture shifts. I think I got that right,
- 38:16Speaker 1: and we see behind the robin are these two dudes
- 38:20Speaker 1: who are standing up against a graffited wall in the background,
- 38:25Speaker 1: and they are the guys who Ash confronted in the alley.
- 38:29Speaker 1: And the first guy looks terrified and he's tearing up
- 38:32Speaker 1: and there's a cut on his cheek and Ash is
- 38:35Speaker 1: aiming the gun, probably at this guy, and a bunch
- 38:40Speaker 1: of folks are standing behind him and watching. The guy
- 38:44Speaker 1: is like, we're really sorry, boss, and Ash sternly cocks
- 38:49Speaker 1: his pistol. I guess it's double action pistol. In fact,
- 38:52Speaker 1: it absolutely is, and he's kind of just doing it
- 38:54Speaker 1: for effect, because I'm sure he could just pull the
- 38:56Speaker 1: trigger once, but whatever, and the guy hearing this falls
- 39:00Speaker 1: to the ground, puts his hands on his head and
- 39:02Speaker 1: he's like, don't kill us. And Ash puts down the
- 39:06Speaker 1: gun and he says, get out of my sight. Oh,
- 39:10Speaker 1: he's nice. I guess. Both of the guys run off
- 39:13Speaker 1: as fast as they can, and Ash turns to face
- 39:17Speaker 1: the guys behind him and says, let me remind you, guys,
- 39:20Speaker 1: we are not the Mafiast dogs. We do business with
- 39:23Speaker 1: you know, as equals. If you want to be his pet,
- 39:26Speaker 1: you're free to go to him, right and he turns
- 39:28Speaker 1: his head. Arthur. Uh. Oh, Arthur, like everyone else, is
- 39:32Speaker 1: a teen's early twenties, someone with blonde hair that kind
- 39:37Speaker 1: of sticks up Likeash the Stampedes a little bit, but
- 39:39Speaker 1: not to that extent. And he has blue eyes, and
- 39:42Speaker 1: he's like, you're the boss. Ash puts his jacket on.
- 39:46Speaker 1: I guess it is a cold time of the year
- 39:48Speaker 1: because everyone is wearing jackets, and he says, glad we
- 39:51Speaker 1: agree if you mean it, that is. And everyone's kind
- 39:55Speaker 1: of walking off, and Arthur has not started walking anywhere yet,
- 39:59Speaker 1: and and he's standing next to some guy and he
- 40:01Speaker 1: goes you think he knows something and the guy's like, nah,
- 40:06Speaker 1: he couldn't even hit those guys, and Arthur's like, he
- 40:10Speaker 1: missed on purpose, dumbass, and he starts to walk away,
- 40:12Speaker 1: and the guy starts following him, and he continues, he
- 40:15Speaker 1: just got close enough to nick their skin. Wow, that's accuracy.
- 40:19Speaker 1: He doesn't look it. But you gotta play dirty if
- 40:21Speaker 1: you want to beat him. And the guy kind of
- 40:23Speaker 1: gasps and is like, are you really gonna Arthur is
- 40:28Speaker 1: holding his right hand up and we see that there's
- 40:32Speaker 1: a scar running across his fingers, and he's like, gotta
- 40:35Speaker 1: pay him back for these fingers. Okay, but it's a
- 40:38Speaker 1: really cool scar. I don't know why you're upset about it.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Then we cut to a crowded, narrow city street that
- 40:46Speaker 1: is absolutely one hundred percent Chinatown. Yeay. A guy with
- 40:50Speaker 1: a beard and glasses wearing scrubs pulls back a curtain
- 40:54Speaker 1: and we hear Ash say business is good, hun Doctor Meredith.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Meredith frowns and we see Ash and he is sitting
- 41:03Speaker 1: at doctor Meredith's desk and he says, back, Alley, doctoring
- 41:07Speaker 1: must make good money. Doctor Mereth says, I told you
- 41:11Speaker 1: this is a restricted area. Troublemaker. The meds are on
- 41:15Speaker 1: the desk. Leave your money, there, Ash picks up a
- 41:17Speaker 1: bottle of pills and tosses it up in the air
- 41:20Speaker 1: gently and says thanks. Doctor Meredith is putting on a
- 41:24Speaker 1: lab coat and says, you know these are like nothing
- 41:27Speaker 1: better than a mere consolation. Get drug with something that
- 41:30Speaker 1: bad and you're gone for life. Who is he anyway?
- 41:33Speaker 1: And she's like, none of your business, but I have
- 41:35Speaker 1: a job for you. Doctor Meredith sits down at his
- 41:39Speaker 1: desk and says, oh, you get a girl pregnant or something,
- 41:43Speaker 1: and Ashes like, absolutely not. It's this and he slides
- 41:46Speaker 1: over a piece of folded paper. Doctor Meredith opens it
- 41:51Speaker 1: and Ash says, can you tell me what it is?
- 41:54Speaker 1: Doctor Meredith sees this white powder? Obviously it's from the
- 41:59Speaker 1: file that Ash found in that necklace, and he rubs
- 42:02Speaker 1: it between his fingers and he's like, doesn't look like heroin. Wow,
- 42:05Speaker 1: he's good at this, I guess, and Ash is like,
- 42:08Speaker 1: I want you to figure out what it is. Then
- 42:11Speaker 1: we cut to the mansion and Dino says Ash did,
- 42:16Speaker 1: and he is sitting on a chair with a really
- 42:19Speaker 1: cute tabby cat on his lap, and the guy who
- 42:23Speaker 1: I never know what his name is says yeah. When
- 42:25Speaker 1: they got there, Ash was with him, uh oh, and
- 42:28Speaker 1: Dino says either they talked or he handed him something,
- 42:33Speaker 1: and Marvin's like, shall I make him talk? And Dino,
- 42:37Speaker 1: who is petting the cat as it purs says no,
- 42:39Speaker 1: we don't want to get him too curious about this.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Leave it to me. We cut to Ash, who is
- 42:45Speaker 1: now in the mansion I guess several somethings later, and
- 42:50Speaker 1: he is standing in front of Dino as Dino was
- 42:52Speaker 1: sitting in a chair and Ash says, can you stop
- 42:56Speaker 1: calling me over like this? And Dino's like, tell me, Ash,
- 43:00Speaker 1: did that man tell you anything? And As says what man?
- 43:05Speaker 1: And Heno's like, don't play stupid. What did he say
- 43:07Speaker 1: to you? And Ash kind of pauses for a second
- 43:10Speaker 1: and he says help me, and Dino chuckles and is
- 43:14Speaker 1: like I see. And Ash turns and is like, if
- 43:18Speaker 1: that's it, I'm leaving, and Heno's like, okay, one last thing.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Did he hand you anything? And a s says nope,
- 43:26Speaker 1: but He's still kind of facing away from him, and
- 43:28Speaker 1: Dino's eyes narrow and he says really, and Ash turns
- 43:32Speaker 1: his head and says really, later, old man, next time,
- 43:36Speaker 1: make an appointment and he leaves and he know's like
- 43:40Speaker 1: that sly fox, he's just not doing a great job lying.
- 43:43Speaker 1: I guess. Ash is now walking down the hallway of
- 43:46Speaker 1: this mansion and he passes Marvin and he says, bye, Marvin,
- 43:50Speaker 1: thanks for driving me here, but I won't need your
- 43:52Speaker 1: services on the way home. And Marvin to himself says,
- 43:56Speaker 1: that little brat, just you wait. And Arthur kind of
- 44:00Speaker 1: approaches and half laughs and says take it easy, man,
- 44:05Speaker 1: and Marvin's like, Arthur, what are you doing here? And
- 44:08Speaker 1: Arthur says, I've got an offer for you. I'm sure
- 44:10Speaker 1: you'll like it. That's not good, And then we cut
- 44:15Speaker 1: to some really large building and inside the building, a
- 44:21Speaker 1: chan is walking I guess down a hallway and he's
- 44:24Speaker 1: like wow, it's just like Cusig New York. And he's
- 44:27Speaker 1: looking around like super excitedly and he's like just like TV.
- 44:31Speaker 1: And the brown haired guy is like, stay with us,
- 44:33Speaker 1: a chan, and they're like walking down a hall and
- 44:36Speaker 1: there's this red haired guy in like a suit that's
- 44:38Speaker 1: leading them. Then we cut to a dead dude covered
- 44:43Speaker 1: in blood slumped against the wall. Yay, and a voice
- 44:47Speaker 1: says suicide huh, and we see that there's a large group,
- 44:52Speaker 1: you know, a moderately sized group of people sitting around
- 44:55Speaker 1: a table looking at this image on a projector screen.
- 44:59Speaker 1: And one of the guy says, a trader, a real
- 45:02Speaker 1: estate broker, and a nightclub owner. Interesting combination. And we
- 45:05Speaker 1: flashed through pictures of these dead guys that are like
- 45:08Speaker 1: covered in blood, and one of the guys says, this
- 45:11Speaker 1: is the third case this month. And this guy who's
- 45:15Speaker 1: kind of like balding and overweight says, they don't seem
- 45:19Speaker 1: the type to commit suicide. I can't seem to figure
- 45:21Speaker 1: it out. I don't think there's a type to commit suicide,
- 45:24Speaker 1: but whatever. A guy opens the door and says, captain,
- 45:28Speaker 1: your guests have arrived. Then we cut to that balding
- 45:31Speaker 1: guy shaking hands with the brown hair guy, and the
- 45:33Speaker 1: brown hair guy says, thanks for having us. I'm Shunichi eBay,
- 45:37Speaker 1: and the balding guy says, I'm Jenkins. Must have been
- 45:41Speaker 1: surprised to hear about Max huh SHUONICI says, yeah, we
- 45:44Speaker 1: came here to see him, but I didn't expect it
- 45:46Speaker 1: to be in jail. Thank God for Charlie. That's the
- 45:50Speaker 1: red haired cup by the way, and Charlie says, I
- 45:53Speaker 1: did go to the police academy with him. Han is
- 45:56Speaker 1: behind them, kind of not really listening and just kind
- 45:59Speaker 1: of looking around, and Jenkins is like, oh, is that
- 46:02Speaker 1: your son? And Achan turns and Jenkins says, you're helping
- 46:08Speaker 1: your dad out and a Chan is like not happy
- 46:12Speaker 1: about that, and Shunzi's like, no, actually, he's my assistant,
- 46:16Speaker 1: and Ashan looks kind of frustrated, and he's like, I'm
- 46:18Speaker 1: Agi O Komura. I'm nineteen and I'm in college. And
- 46:22Speaker 1: everyone's like what and Agi is not happy about this.
- 46:25Speaker 1: So a Chan is just his nickname that Shunichi's been
- 46:28Speaker 1: calling him, So we'll call him ag from now on,
- 46:30Speaker 1: as that's what almost everyone calls him, except when they're
- 46:33Speaker 1: trying to be funny. So anyway, Shoonnichi says, I know,
- 46:37Speaker 1: he looks pretty young, even for a Japanese and Jenkins
- 46:40Speaker 1: is like, forgive us, but it actually might be good
- 46:42Speaker 1: that you look so young. They don't trust adults, and
- 46:45Speaker 1: Shunichi says, are the street gangs here really that dangerous? Yes,
- 46:50Speaker 1: and Jenkins says it depends on who you're dealing with.
- 46:52Speaker 1: They're all dangerous guys. They're all dangerous anyway, he continues,
- 46:56Speaker 1: the guy you're meeting today, Ash, he's a pretty sharp one.
- 46:59Speaker 1: In no time, he got all the neighborhood gangs under control.
- 47:02Speaker 1: And Charlie says, and he's only seventeen, and he's like really,
- 47:06Speaker 1: and Jenkin is like, yeah, plus he's white, but he
- 47:10Speaker 1: hasn't had any problems with the Puerto Ricans or Mexicans
- 47:12Speaker 1: or blacks, and that's a pretty big deal. And Ag thinks,
- 47:15Speaker 1: Ash like cinders, what's he like? And that tells you
- 47:20Speaker 1: right there that Ag is probably important, and so is Ash,
- 47:24Speaker 1: because nobody asked that question unless they're going to be important,
- 47:28Speaker 1: and we're gonna find out what they're like. So I'm excited.
- 47:30Speaker 1: And then we cut to Ash in his apartments and
- 47:34Speaker 1: Ash's like, I know it's that'll bastard turn a place
- 47:36Speaker 1: upside down. Everything looks totally okay, by the way, and
- 47:40Speaker 1: Skip is like, isn't it always like this? And Ash
- 47:43Speaker 1: takes off his jacket and lays on the bed and says,
- 47:46Speaker 1: I can tell seems too is really desperate. There's no
- 47:49Speaker 1: way I'm handing it over. And then we cut to
- 47:51Speaker 1: an elaborate chandelier and we hear Dino say, are you sure,
- 47:56Speaker 1: and we see that he is sitting at a long
- 47:59Speaker 1: table in a dining room and the guy is like, yeah,
- 48:04Speaker 1: there was nothing in ashes room, and Dino says, so
- 48:08Speaker 1: he's already hidden it. That's so like him. But now
- 48:12Speaker 1: we know for sure. But if you found it, you'd
- 48:16Speaker 1: also know. It's like a it's like a catch twenty two.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Either way, you know that he has it. Okay, Dino continues, Marvin,
- 48:25Speaker 1: he's yours. Oh. Marvin is surprised, and Dino says, hurt
- 48:30Speaker 1: him in any way you want make him talk? Now,
- 48:34Speaker 1: let's just pause there and say anyway could mean different
- 48:38Speaker 1: things based on different shows. So yeah, Marvin says, got it,
- 48:44Speaker 1: and Dino's like, but keep him alive, understood. Then we
- 48:48Speaker 1: cut to I don't really know, a blue counter with
- 48:51Speaker 1: alcohol on it, I think, and a voice which I
- 48:55Speaker 1: was pretty sure was Arthur, says old man. Dino said
- 48:58Speaker 1: that he's all loved ash just like you. What, And
- 49:03Speaker 1: then we see that it is Arthur and Marvin and
- 49:06Speaker 1: they are at a bar. So Arthur continues, but anyways,
- 49:10Speaker 1: this solves our problem. So how about you? Were you in?
- 49:13Speaker 1: You got to keep your promise, though, Marvin takes a
- 49:16Speaker 1: drink and says sure, I'm in, and he cuts to
- 49:18Speaker 1: black and we hear a voice say, you say he
- 49:21Speaker 1: was drugged in ract with something bad, and we see
- 49:25Speaker 1: that we are in first person perspective of someone who
- 49:28Speaker 1: has their eyes closed, and doctor Meredith is kind of
- 49:32Speaker 1: opening the person's eyes and I guess looking at them,
- 49:35Speaker 1: and then we pull back and we see this griffin
- 49:37Speaker 1: and ashe says, yeah, by a quack at a veteran hospital,
- 49:41Speaker 1: Doctor Meredith is like, who is he to you? Anyways?
- 49:44Speaker 1: You can tell me. I'm taking care of him for you.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Ash pauses and then says, he's my big brother. Oh,
- 49:51Speaker 1: they're related. Now we know why. I mean, I figured
- 49:54Speaker 1: that it wasn't that hard. He's obviously related to them,
- 49:58Speaker 1: but whatever. Doctor Meredith is like, I thought I saw
- 50:02Speaker 1: a resemblance. I'm not an expert, so I can't say
- 50:05Speaker 1: for sure, but there aren't really any reported cases of
- 50:08Speaker 1: flashbacks continuing like this, And Ash says flashbacks and doctor
- 50:13Speaker 1: Meredith's like spasms, he is Caesar's and says nonsensical stuff right,
- 50:18Speaker 1: and Ash's like, yeah, banana fish, he's always muttering that,
- 50:22Speaker 1: and doctor Meredith's like Wow, clever choice of words. Did
- 50:25Speaker 1: he like Salinger? And Ash's like what, And doctor Meredith
- 50:29Speaker 1: says it's in one of his novels, if you come
- 50:33Speaker 1: across a banana fish at sea, you'll suddenly feel like dying, okay,
- 50:37Speaker 1: and Ash says, die, I didn't know. And we cut
- 50:42Speaker 1: to a streets and we see Ag and then he
- 50:47Speaker 1: is walking down some stairs into a basement shop probably,
- 50:52Speaker 1: and Shunichi is saying something like this is more like
- 50:56Speaker 1: And they're walking down this highly graffitied starewell and Skip
- 51:01Speaker 1: is leading them, and Age says they said that they'd
- 51:04Speaker 1: bust in if anything happened, but he looks back towards
- 51:07Speaker 1: the street and Skip's like, you're coming or not. They
- 51:12Speaker 1: walk in and it is a bar and some kind
- 51:15Speaker 1: of hard rock is playing, and Agy looks around in
- 51:19Speaker 1: tenses up and there's like all these tough dudes at
- 51:23Speaker 1: the bar and they're all looking at them, and also
- 51:26Speaker 1: they're all smoking, which is probably not something that would
- 51:29Speaker 1: happen in twenty eighteen, but whatever. And I was looking
- 51:32Speaker 1: at this bar and going like, oh my god, I've
- 51:34Speaker 1: totally been in this bar before, not in New York,
- 51:36Speaker 1: but I felt like a bar that i'd been in
- 51:38Speaker 1: in Philly. And anyway, Skip is ahead of them and
- 51:42Speaker 1: they were just standing at the doorway, and he's like,
- 51:45Speaker 1: what are you so scared of? Come on? They start
- 51:48Speaker 1: to walk over to him, and we see that there
- 51:50Speaker 1: are a bunch of pool tables ahead of them, and
- 51:53Speaker 1: Skip says, here they are Ash, the guests from Japan.
- 51:57Speaker 1: And Ash is playing pool, which is so nice for him.
- 52:01Speaker 1: I'm glad that he gets some time to playpool and
- 52:05Speaker 1: not do terrible things. And he says right, and AG
- 52:10Speaker 1: thinks he's not how I imagined, and Sunichi says, uh, I'm
- 52:15Speaker 1: a photographer from Japan. I wanted to ask you about
- 52:18Speaker 1: your gang for a magazine article, and Ash says what
- 52:23Speaker 1: do you want to know? And AG and Shoonichi think together, man,
- 52:28Speaker 1: he's intense. Yeah. Shoonichi then says, can I take a
- 52:32Speaker 1: few pictures first? And Ash just like, not the face?
- 52:36Speaker 1: And I guess he is shy or smart because you
- 52:39Speaker 1: don't want everyone knowing that you're a criminal, and Shoonichi
- 52:44Speaker 1: is like, no problem, Echan, get ready, and AG's like okay.
- 52:47Speaker 1: So AG and Shoonichi are going through their expensive camera
- 52:50Speaker 1: gear in this bar of criminals and Ash says, use
- 52:56Speaker 1: kids as assistants in Japan, and Agi turned towards him,
- 53:00Speaker 1: frustrated and is like, I'm older than you, and Ash
- 53:03Speaker 1: is like, oh, well, excuse me. AG turns back to
- 53:07Speaker 1: setting things up and thinks, look who's talking, And then
- 53:11Speaker 1: I guess. We cut to a little later and he
- 53:13Speaker 1: is standing against a pillar watching Ash as he talks
- 53:17Speaker 1: to some dude at the bar and they're like laughing
- 53:20Speaker 1: and stuff, and AG sees the gun tucked into Ash's
- 53:25Speaker 1: pants and he just says, is that a real gun?
- 53:31Speaker 1: And Ash turns and says, what do you mean? And
- 53:35Speaker 1: AG blushes and thinks, of course it's real, man, I'm
- 53:39Speaker 1: such an idiot, and then out loud says guns are
- 53:42Speaker 1: illegal in Japan? Can I hold it? What? Ag? And
- 53:48Speaker 1: this takes everyone around them by surprise. Shunichi rushes over
- 53:54Speaker 1: and says hey, and then, quietly to AG says, don't
- 53:58Speaker 1: ask them that, and AG's like what, and Ash pauses
- 54:04Speaker 1: and then smiles and says sure and walks over to AG.
- 54:09Speaker 1: And the guys at the bar are super surprised. And
- 54:12Speaker 1: I see that who he was talking to was Alex,
- 54:15Speaker 1: who is going to be important later. But I got
- 54:17Speaker 1: really excited because I didn't even know we saw him
- 54:19Speaker 1: this early. And Ash then hands Ag the gun and
- 54:24Speaker 1: Ag takes it excitedly and he's like, wow, it's really heavy,
- 54:27Speaker 1: and then he hands it back and he says, thanks
- 54:29Speaker 1: for trusting me with it. Ah Uh, can I ask
- 54:33Speaker 1: you something? And Ash just like what? And Ady says
- 54:37Speaker 1: have you ever killed anyone with it? And Ash says yeah,
- 54:42Speaker 1: and AG's like you have huh? And Ash just like
- 54:46Speaker 1: such a baby and Ag is not thrilled. Then a
- 54:50Speaker 1: little confused. Ash then says, bring on the questions, and
- 54:55Speaker 1: then Skip comes over and he's like, hey, e chan,
- 54:58Speaker 1: let me buy you a drink. And then we cut
- 55:01Speaker 1: to Ag and Skips sitting at a table and a
- 55:04Speaker 1: waitress brings them drinks and Skip says that was so cool.
- 55:08Speaker 1: I didn't know you had it in you And AG's
- 55:10Speaker 1: like what, and Skip says, Ash never lets anyone touch
- 55:13Speaker 1: his gun. Once a drunk I tried to and he
- 55:16Speaker 1: got his fingers blown off, and Ag looks like really sick,
- 55:19Speaker 1: and he's like, now you tell me. Skip says, look
- 55:23Speaker 1: on the bright side. Ask seems to like you, and
- 55:26Speaker 1: he lifts his drink and he's like cheers to your
- 55:28Speaker 1: nerve and keeping your fingers, and Ag takes a sip
- 55:32Speaker 1: of the drink and then he spits it out and
- 55:34Speaker 1: he's like, this is alcohol, and Skip is like, it's
- 55:38Speaker 1: just rum and coke. Then AG is looking over at
- 55:41Speaker 1: Ash and he says, I heard he's a sharp shooter,
- 55:44Speaker 1: and Skip says he's more than sharp. He uses a
- 55:47Speaker 1: Smith and Wesson three fifty seven magnum and the barrel
- 55:50Speaker 1: is cut short too. He never misses a target at
- 55:52Speaker 1: twenty five yards and AG's like, really, and he looks
- 55:57Speaker 1: a bit drunk. And then I'm like, wait, is he
- 56:01Speaker 1: drunk because he's like he's kind of red faced, kind
- 56:04Speaker 1: of like he's blushing. So I thought, well, maybe the
- 56:06Speaker 1: drink is getting to him. But it's been like thirty seconds.
- 56:08Speaker 1: Is he blushing? And he says ash Lynx huh, And
- 56:12Speaker 1: Skip's like, it's just a nickname. It means wildcat, which
- 56:17Speaker 1: is really for the benefit of the Japanese audience, is
- 56:19Speaker 1: not the American ones, because we obviously know what Lynx means.
- 56:23Speaker 1: But Skip continues, nobody can tame him. He's totally wild.
- 56:28Speaker 1: I wish it's a perfect name for a boss. It
- 56:31Speaker 1: is a really good alias it is and Agi is
- 56:37Speaker 1: still pretty red and I really like at this point,
- 56:39Speaker 1: like are you fucking blushing? Age? Age says, you really
- 56:43Speaker 1: look up to him? Huh. Skip kind of laughs, and
- 56:46Speaker 1: then we see Shoonichi walking over and he says a
- 56:48Speaker 1: chan and Age's like, did you get to talk to him?
- 56:51Speaker 1: And Shunichi says, he's not really much of a talker.
- 56:54Speaker 1: He's a young gang leader. There's gotta be more to him.
- 56:57Speaker 1: There's so much more Shoonnichi, and you don't want to
- 56:59Speaker 1: know any of it, I promise. Then we cut to
- 57:04Speaker 1: the bar where Alex is talking about something that Bones did,
- 57:08Speaker 1: who is another character that will meet later, and they're
- 57:10Speaker 1: laughing and Ash takes a call, so Ash is like,
- 57:14Speaker 1: what's up Shorter, and Shorter's like, get out of there
- 57:16Speaker 1: now it's Arthur and Ash gasps and Shorter continues he's
- 57:20Speaker 1: running up some guys. He's coming for you, but it's
- 57:22Speaker 1: too late because these guys just burst in the door
- 57:25Speaker 1: with bats, yay bats. And Shorter who we see now
- 57:29Speaker 1: who is outside I think in Chinatown. He's trying to
- 57:32Speaker 1: talk to Ash and Ash isn't responding and he's like Ash,
- 57:35Speaker 1: ash shit and he takes off on his motorcycle back
- 57:39Speaker 1: of the bar. We're in full brawl mode now, and
- 57:42Speaker 1: Ash punches someone in the face and dodges a bat
- 57:45Speaker 1: and says, shit, there's not enough room in here for this,
- 57:48Speaker 1: and he kicks some dude and then he gets up
- 57:51Speaker 1: on the bar and he's like, must you all do
- 57:53Speaker 1: this here? And he jumps and kicks a guy in
- 57:56Speaker 1: the face, and then Charlie shows up the and he's like, stop, police,
- 58:03Speaker 1: that's good. I hope there's more. I think there was
- 58:04Speaker 1: another guy behind him too or something, and nobody is
- 58:07Speaker 1: paying attention at all, and someone fires a gun and
- 58:11Speaker 1: Shoonichi is under a table and he's like covering his ears,
- 58:15Speaker 1: and I guess he sees Charlie and he's like Charlie
- 58:18Speaker 1: and Ag pops up from behind the bar because they're
- 58:21Speaker 1: behind the bar, and he's like, Charlie, fucking eg ag,
- 58:27Speaker 1: and Skip pops up and is like keep your head
- 58:30Speaker 1: down and pushes him out of sight. But some dude
- 58:34Speaker 1: saw them and is like there he is, and Skip
- 58:37Speaker 1: is like, Charlie's here now, we just have to wait
- 58:40Speaker 1: this out. And they're sitting behind the bar and Ag
- 58:42Speaker 1: lets out like a big sigh, and then all of
- 58:45Speaker 1: a sudden, someone has a knife to AG's head and
- 58:48Speaker 1: the guys like don't move, and Ag looks over in
- 58:51Speaker 1: fear and like goes into a full on panic and
- 58:54Speaker 1: starts like pantomiming to Skip like this guy, and we're
- 58:58Speaker 1: really lucky that Skip is there because he he smashes
- 59:00Speaker 1: a bottle of some sort of alcohol over the guy's head.
- 59:03Speaker 1: It looked really heavy, and then he fucking kicks him,
- 59:05Speaker 1: and Skip grabs Ag by the hand and drags him
- 59:08Speaker 1: off and he's like, hurry this way, and they run
- 59:11Speaker 1: into another room, but there are guys following them now,
- 59:15Speaker 1: and Ash notices them as they run off and gets
- 59:18Speaker 1: kind of distracted and like barely dodges someone who has
- 59:21Speaker 1: a bat and he's like, I see what you're after now,
- 59:24Speaker 1: and he kicks a couple of guys down and he's like, Skip,
- 59:27Speaker 1: get back here. It's a trap, and he tries to
- 59:30Speaker 1: run after them, but some dudes like grab him so
- 59:33Speaker 1: he can't, and then we cut to Skip and Ag
- 59:37Speaker 1: and Skip lips up a grate like in the street,
- 59:40Speaker 1: and Ag pops his head up and he's like, wow,
- 59:43Speaker 1: an escape route, and Skip looks around and he's like
- 59:46Speaker 1: sh But then we see that they're not alone. Someone
- 59:49Speaker 1: is walking up from behind them and the guy says, yo, Skip.
- 59:55Speaker 1: We see that there are two guys standing over them,
- 59:58Speaker 1: and then we cut two Charlie and he's like this
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: way eBay and Shunichi stops him and is like Charlie,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: A Chan's gone. Ash is still fighting to get those
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: guys off him, and he finally manages to just run outside,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and he's running down the street towards a car and
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: he's like Skipper and we see that Skip is being
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: pushed into a car and he calls out to Ash,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: and then kind of in the background, the opening theme
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: starts playing, which we will talk about in a second.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: The guy gets in after Skip and says go and
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: they peel off, and Ash is chasing them on foot,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: but it's a fucking car, so he can't catch up
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: with them, because yeah, So he stops and he takes
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: out his gun and he calmly fires and he goes
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: right through the back windshield and one of the guys
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: gets hit right in the head. Ag covers his ears
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: and looks over in horror at the dead guy and
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: the guy on the other side of them is like shit,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: he got Jack, and the driver's like, I know double himself.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: And Ag is panic quietly and sweating and thinking, calm down.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: I need to calm down. And there's blood on his
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: face from the dead guy and he thinks this is real,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: this is actually happening. I might be killed. Then there's
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: a scene that I didn't quite understand where it looks
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: like the guy is violently pulling Ag and Skip out
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: of the car, but I think he's just trying to
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: take away their cell phones. And Skip is like, hey,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: get your hands off him about Ag, and the guy's
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: like shut up, and he takes their phones and he
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: tosses them into the streets. Shinichi and Charlie are trying
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: to figure out where Age is based on his phone location,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and it stops moving and we cut to Ash, who
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: as Shorter pulls up just in time, and he's like, Ash,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: you're alive, and Ash says, Shorter, I need this, and
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: he pushes him off his bike and Shorter's like what
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: and Ash takes off and Shorter's like hey, Ash, And
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: we're back to the car and one of the guys
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: looks back and he's like he's coming and the driver says,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: no way, he'd abandoned Skip bingo and one of them
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: is on the phone and he says it's me, And
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: then we cut to the most beautiful abandoned warehouse I
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: have ever seen, like so beautiful, like I wish this
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: was the warehouse that I lived in. It's got glass
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: all over it and graffiti and shit, and someone that
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I guess we don't see says, okay, good, And then
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: we see Arthur and Marvin and they're in the warehouse
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: and Arthur is holding a phone, so he's the one
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: who's been talking, and he says, they're coming. Keep your promise,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: have as much fun as you like. What And Marvin
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: takes a drag from his cigarette and says, and after that,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: make sure he's lying in a pool of his own blood, right.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: He then tosses the cigarette and steps on it, and
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Arthur smiles. We cut back to as he's riding down
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: a kind of a large street on Shorter's motorcycle and
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: I'm wondering if it's like the Henry Hudson Parkway because
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: it kind of looks like that, but I don't really know.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: And then we cut to the title card and it
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: says a perfect day for banana fish and that's it. Yeah,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: that was something. Closing thoughts before we go any further,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: I will tell you that the opening theme was playing
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: at the end like I did just a minute ago.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: It is called Found and Lost and it is by Survive,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: said the Prophets, which is a pretty decently known Japanese
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: rock band. They have done some other work on other anime.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: They've done two of the Vinlin Saga openings, which were
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: both very very good. And I really like this song too.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: You barely got to hear it because there was action
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: over it, so we'll talk more about it next week
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: and the visuals along with it. Other than that, if
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: you were listening to ash and you thought, wow, that
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: guy sounds really familiar, that is because the voice actor
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: is Yuma Ochiya, and he plays suck A Hadika in Windbreaker,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: which we just saw. I actually don't think they sound
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: that similar, which I think speaks to his range as
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: a voice actor. He is also the voice of Fushigiro
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Megumi from Jiu Jitsu Kaisen and Kiyo from Fruits Basket
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: and plenty of other people, and I think he always
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: sounds a little different. So good job. But back to
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: what this episode was like. I want to start off
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: by saying that I like think I was partially asleep
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: when I watched this the first time, because I remember thinking. So.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: The story with this is that I had wanted to
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: watch this since basically it first aired in twenty eighteen,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: but I didn't have access to Amazon Prime and I
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: didn't really want to pirate it because it's just annoying.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: So I was like, ah, who cares. So I've been
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: trying to watch it since then, and I started watching
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: it at the beginning of May, so this is all
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: really new and fresh in my mind, and I was
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: really excited about it, and I watched the first episode
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: and I went like, yeah, that's fine. I thought that
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: was a really good first episode. And maybe it's because
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: I know more about what's going on, but I like that.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Do I like it as much as the upcoming episodes.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: I mean, I guess not. But there was a lot
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: that went on. We learned a lot about what's going on,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: or we have a lot of questions. We have most
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: of the main cast introduced, at least the main cast
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: in this part of the show, So I mean, I
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: think it was interesting there's a bunch of things that
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: were kind of questionable that people said to Ash. That's yeah,
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: but I kind of already pointed them out, like I
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: was alluding to earlier. I'm not super thrilled with the translation,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: and I don't just mean the kind of mistranslation of scumbag.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: There were episodes where I was like, man, we could
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: have said that better. You know, like, if you're gonna
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: translate things and kind of you know, change them to
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: make them more understood by a Western audience, you got
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: to do a better job. And that's kind of how
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I felt about Windbreak or two, and I didn't really
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: get a chance to talk about that. A lot of
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: that translation. I had to like go and be like,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: what does this mean? So this isn't that bad. I
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: just think it could have been polished if you were
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: to read the manga. It's kind of the other way.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: The manga is a lot more slick. It's translating a
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: lot more liberally, but not inaccurately as far as I
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: can tell. I'd love it if there was a middle
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: ground for both of them, But hey, what are you
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: gonna do? Nothing? Because I don't really speak Japanese very well.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: Or at all, so I don't think there's really anything else.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: I wanted to say, Oh, yes there is. I like
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: shorter because I like punks, and I got really excited
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: to see someone with a mohawk. It just made me
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: feel safe. So now you know something very strange about
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: me pretending I haven't seen this. I am interested to
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: see where the story goes, because we obviously have AG
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: and Skip who are kidnapped and Ash riding into what
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: is most definitely a trap. So hopefully everyone's gonna be okay,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: and I'm sure we'll see next episode. So thank you
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: for listening to this. This was a very long episode.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Hopefully they won't all be this long, because this was
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: twenty three pages of notes, which is more than it
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: may have ever been. So yeah, thanks for listening to
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: the whole thing, and I hope you have a really
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: good whatever, and I'll see you next time later webs
