- 0:00- This is Chris Oso with the Becker's Healthcare Podcast.
- 0:03I'm thrilled to be joined by Dr.
- 0:04Zafar Chari, senior Vice President and Chief Digital
- 0:07and Information Officer at Seattle Children's.
- 0:10Dr. Chari, thank you so much for joining us today.
- 0:13- Thanks for having me.
- 0:16- Certainly our frequent guests on the Becker's podcast,
- 0:18we definitely thank you for that.
- 0:20But for those who may not be familiar with you,
- 0:22could you please introduce yourself
- 0:24and give us a bit about your background?
- 0:27- Yeah, thank you. So Z Childry over at Seattle Children's.
- 0:32Uh, I've been in the role of Chief Digital
- 0:35and Information Officer now this is year seven
- 0:38and I've been in healthcare it, it's year 39.
- 0:43Wow. Time has flown by.
- 0:45I'm a physician by training,
- 0:47but I have been in the uh, CIO space for over 20 years
- 0:52and I've worked in multiple health systems across the world.
- 0:58- 39 years is certainly an impressive amount of experience
- 1:01and knowledge that you bring to the field.
- 1:03Dr. Chari, what would you say are your top
- 1:05priorities for 2024?
- 1:09- Yeah, so my top priorities for top 24, probably,
- 1:12definitely top of the list would be
- 1:15cost improvement programs.
- 1:16As you are aware, healthcare is going
- 1:19through some difficult challenges where margins have shrunk
- 1:23and costs are uh, escalated.
- 1:27So we're doing a lot of work on the cost improvement side
- 1:29of things, but at the same time,
- 1:33you can't be successful in healthcare without innovation.
- 1:37So in the innovation space, the magic word is now ai.
- 1:42So that is definitely on our priority list
- 1:44because we're getting a lot of discussion
- 1:47and request from our clinical colleagues about
- 1:50what does this mean for us,
- 1:52how this will impact our health system.
- 1:55And then to sort of round off that top three, the third one
- 2:00that's the top priority for me is going to be cybersecurity.
- 2:07- I'm glad you mentioned both AI and cybersecurity.
- 2:10Could you expand a little bit about
- 2:11how your role will change with regard to those
- 2:14elements over the next 18 months
- 2:16and how it will change your team's role?
- 2:20- Yeah, so I think what I'm likely to see,
- 2:23certainly from a CIO
- 2:25and IT team health IT team perspective is
- 2:29that we are now playing a more strategic role
- 2:32in the organization.
- 2:34Nobody really cares anymore about infrastructure
- 2:38and flashing lights and hardware and equipment.
- 2:42They want the health IT teams
- 2:44and the leader of those teams to have a bigger say
- 2:49and be instrumental within the business itself.
- 2:51The whole overall system, there's a push
- 2:55to leverage technology to drive innovation
- 2:59and business growth.
- 3:00So that's where the sort of AI component comes in.
- 3:03How do you automate, how do you streamline processes?
- 3:07But at the same time, we are seeing a massive increase in
- 3:11demand for services.
- 3:13Uh, kids will continue to get sick
- 3:15and we'll continue to need medical care.
- 3:18They also want health IT groups to adapt more
- 3:22to new technologies and trends in a more agile pace
- 3:26than we've done in the past.
- 3:28And you know, if you see the onslaught
- 3:30of AI literally in months, it's gone from a non thing to,
- 3:33everybody wants to be involved in that space.
- 3:36But of course, whilst you're doing all these interesting
- 3:40and cool things, you can never give up focus.
- 3:43So there'll be a huge focus on cybersecurity data privacy.
- 3:49The bad threat actors are not stopping,
- 3:53they're getting worse.
- 3:54Healthcare data is so valuable.
- 3:57So we're seeing a lot of attacks, um,
- 3:59in this healthcare space.
- 4:01So we can't forget to focus on that on that
- 4:05cybersecurity area.
- 4:06We've gotta keep our data secure
- 4:09at the same time we have to be more agile.
- 4:11And I'm also finally seeing a better collaboration
- 4:16with the business unit,
- 4:19the clinical units within our health system,
- 4:22and a closer relationship with external vendor partners
- 4:27where it's more of a partnership than a sort of push pull
- 4:32type of engagement.
- 4:37- Your points are well taken on all those front doctor
- 4:39and segwaying a little bit, uh, from those topics.
- 4:42What are you excited about right now?
- 4:44And it can be within AI
- 4:46or data security as you mentioned, or, or something else.
- 4:50- Yes, I'm definitely excited about
- 4:52how we unleash innovation.
- 4:54So AI is one of those components.
- 4:56You've got other things like robotics
- 4:59and if you look at the development in the robotics space,
- 5:01it's also accelerating.
- 5:03And I work in a pediatric hospitals,
- 5:05I'm always gonna love little robots.
- 5:08And then the other thing I'm excited about is
- 5:11making better decisions
- 5:14using the data that we're sitting on.
- 5:16I think healthcare systems have massive amounts of data.
- 5:20We don't always use it to the best of our abilities
- 5:24to make better decisions, especially in the clinical space.
- 5:28I'm excited about getting outta the infrastructure business.
- 5:32I think health IT teams are in the patient business,
- 5:37not the IT business.
- 5:38And therefore I'm excited about what cloud can bring,
- 5:42how we can scale into the cloud much faster than we have
- 5:46done in the previous years.
- 5:49- Doctor, I'm glad you mentioned
- 5:50that health IT teams are in the patient business.
- 5:53Last thing I wanted to ask you about is on our podcast
- 5:57and another media, you've emphasized the importance
- 6:00of connecting with stakeholders in healthcare.
- 6:02So how would you recommend someone in your position as a CIO
- 6:05to best engage these stakeholders while
- 6:07keeping an eye on innovation?
- 6:11- Yeah, so you're not, you're not really going
- 6:13to get innovation without your stakeholders, right?
- 6:16I mean, stakeholders are the ones
- 6:18that have all the great ideas.
- 6:20You as a person leading the health IT team are going
- 6:24to be the individual who translates
- 6:27those stakeholder requirements into
- 6:31how do you actually execute that.
- 6:32So the, the best way to sort of engage
- 6:36with stakeholders is to meet them where they're at.
- 6:39So I always recommend to my teams that if,
- 6:42if you are spending more time in your office than actually
- 6:45on the clinical floors, then something's wrong.
- 6:48You have to go out there, you have to walk the floors,
- 6:50you have to round with the teams, you have
- 6:53to participate in different committees, you have
- 6:56to attend the clinical presentations,
- 6:59you've gotta do all of those things.
- 7:03That's really the job that we have
- 7:05because we have to go out not only educate the stakeholders,
- 7:09but get their input into what they need.
- 7:12This helps us keep up with how technology is changing
- 7:16and how it can adapt to help clinicians
- 7:20do the best job that they can.
- 7:21And certainly for us provide hope, care,
- 7:23and cure for the kids that we serve.
- 7:26Uh, and at the same time, you are the evangelist
- 7:30for technology and my team is as well.
- 7:34Um, then when you're talking about security
- 7:37and security risks, that is the same opportunity
- 7:40to then educate those stakeholders on what risks are coming,
- 7:44how people can behave in a safe manner whilst, uh,
- 7:49being in the clinical space.
- 7:51You know, we all, it's, it's quite interesting
- 7:53'cause in healthcare, we all love to click on
- 7:55that magical link that will give us millions of dollars,
- 7:58but we have to educate people not to do that.
- 8:01And at the same time, if you're engaging with stakeholders,
- 8:05you're gonna be able to articulate what your constraints are
- 8:09as a technology group,
- 8:10because we're all facing budget constraints as well.
- 8:13So there, there's no unlimited checkbook.
- 8:17AI is great and robotics is great.
- 8:20Those innovations are great, but they do come at a cost.
- 8:23And so we, we are allowed to educate people in terms of
- 8:26what is the art of the possible within the budget versus
- 8:29what needs to be deferred to another fiscal year.
- 8:32- Dr. Shari, thank you so much for being so generous
- 8:35with your time and all your insights today.
- 8:36We definitely cannot wait to share them with our audience
- 8:39and we look forward to connecting with you soon.
- 8:42- Yeah, thank you so much for having me.
- 8:46- It's so important for leaders at the top of organizations
- 8:49to keep learning, stay sharp, grow their networks,
- 8:52help our audience better do this in a more simplified,
- 8:54personalized, and meaningful way.
