- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 24th of September. Glad to have your company on
- 0:19this day, this auspicious day. Did you realise that today is
- 0:23actually the day in 1960 when the USS Enterprise was first
- 0:30launched? No, not the fictitious Star
- 0:34Trek, USS Enterprise. Did you know that actually four
- 0:38years later, the pilot of the very first Star Trek episode was
- 0:42aired and they borrowed the name from the USS Enterprise, which
- 0:45was actually in the US Navy, which was this giant nuclear
- 0:49aircraft carrier, in fact the world's first nuclear aircraft
- 0:53carrier. And they thought that was the
- 0:54most wild and and fantastical event.
- 0:58So when they came up with this crazy story named Star Trek,
- 1:01that was the name that they chose.
- 1:04So all your trickies out there, this is the birth date of the
- 1:07actual USS Enterprise. But space travel aside, we are
- 1:11going to do some time travel today.
- 1:14Travelling back to pole, appearing before Festus and
- 1:18Agrippa, as all this positioning is going on behind the scenes
- 1:23ultimately for Jesus aim to be met for Paul to take his message
- 1:27on to Rome. So let's read it together.
- 1:29Acts chapter 25. Three days after Festus arrived
- 1:43in Caesarea to take over his new responsibilities, he left for
- 1:47Jerusalem, where the leading priests and other Jewish leaders
- 1:51met with him and made their accusations against Paul.
- 1:54They asked Festus as a favour to transfer Paul to Jerusalem,
- 1:59planning to ambush and kill him on the way.
- 2:02But Festus replied that Paul was at Say Saria and he himself
- 2:06would be returning there soon. So he said, those of you in
- 2:10authority can return with me. If Paul has done anything wrong,
- 2:15you can make your accusations. About 8 or 10 days later, Festus
- 2:20returned to Say Saria, and on the following day he took his
- 2:24seat in court and ordered that Paul be brought in.
- 2:27When Paul arrived, the Jewish leaders from Jerusalem gathered
- 2:30around and made many serious accusations they couldn't prove.
- 2:35Paul denied the charges. I am not guilty of any crime
- 2:39against the Jewish laws or the Temple or the Roman government,
- 2:43he said. Then Festus, wanting to please
- 2:47the Jews, asked him, Are you willing to go to Jerusalem and
- 2:51stand trial before me there? But Paul replied, No, this is
- 2:57the official Roman court, so I ought to be tried right here.
- 3:01You know very well I'm not guilty of harming the Jews.
- 3:04If I've done something worthy of death, I don't refuse to die.
- 3:08But if I'm innocent, no one has the right to turn me over to
- 3:12these men, to kill me. I appeal to Caesar.
- 3:17Festus conferred with his advisers and then replied, Very
- 3:20well, you have appealed to Caesar, and to Caesar you will
- 3:25go. A few days later, King Agrippa
- 3:29arrived with his sister Bernice to pay their respects to Festus.
- 3:33During their stay of several days, Festus discussed Paul's
- 3:37case with the king. There is a prisoner here, he
- 3:41told him, whose case was left for me by Felix when I was in
- 3:46Jerusalem. The leading priests and Jewish
- 3:49elders pressed charges against him and asked me to condemn him.
- 3:54I pointed out to them that Roman law does not convict people
- 3:57without a trial. They must be given an
- 4:00opportunity to confront their accusers and defend themselves.
- 4:04When his accusers came here for the trial, I didn't delay.
- 4:08I called the case the very next day and ordered Paul brought in.
- 4:13But the accusations made against him weren't any of the crimes I
- 4:18expected. Instead, there was something
- 4:20about their religion and a dead man named Jesus, who Paul
- 4:25insists is alive. I was at a loss to know how to
- 4:29investigate these things, so I asked him whether he would be
- 4:32willing to stand trial on these charges in Jerusalem.
- 4:36But Paul appealed to have his case decided by the emperor, so
- 4:40I ordered that he be held in custody until I could arrange to
- 4:44send him to Caesar. I'd like to hear the man myself,
- 4:49Agrippa said, and Festus replied.
- 4:52You will tomorrow. So the next day, Agrippa and
- 4:57Bernice arrived at the auditorium with great pomp,
- 5:00accompanied by military officers and prominent men of the city.
- 5:04Festus ordered that Paul be brought in then.
- 5:07Festus said King Agrippa and all who are here, this is the man
- 5:13whose death is demanded by all the Jews, both here and in
- 5:18Jerusalem. But in my opinion he has done
- 5:22nothing deserving death. However, since he has appealed
- 5:26his case to the emperor, I have decided to send him to Rome.
- 5:32But what shall I write the emperor for?
- 5:34There is no clear charge against him, so I have brought him
- 5:39before all of you, and especially you, King Gripper, so
- 5:43that after we examine him, I might have something to write
- 5:47for. It makes no sense to send a
- 5:49prisoner to the emperor without specifying the charges against
- 5:53him. Jesus, thank you for today, for
- 6:06the big things and the small things that will happen.
- 6:09My Lord, I pray that in all these things that we can know
- 6:14your love and know your presence, and that Your love
- 6:19will continue its transformational work in US, and
- 6:21that Your Spirit would continue to grow in US so that the fruits
- 6:27of your Spirit would continue to grow and ripen for all to see
- 6:31and experience in the way that we live.
- 6:36Thank You that You have loved us, that you have chosen us, You
- 6:41have wrapped us in your love, that you have forgiven us, that
- 6:45you have provided this perfect way for us to find our way
- 6:49before your throne with nothing but love and welcome from you,
- 6:55from our Father. We are so grateful.
- 6:59We know that we don't deserve your love, but we are so
- 7:03grateful nonetheless. Thank you for your love.
- 7:08Thank you for your closeness to us and thank you for your spirit
- 7:12in us. We just praise You Jesus, and we
- 7:17pray all of these things in your holy name, Amen.
