Latest / Critical Error / THE WORST VIDEO GAME TITLES OF ALL TIME
Transcript
- 0:00You know how they say don't judge a book
- 0:01by its cover?
- 0:02>> Sure.
- 0:05I see what you're doing. Okay. Sure.
- 0:07That's what the because that's because
- 0:08the episode's kind of about the titles,
- 0:10games, and see. See, I really like where
- 0:11you went with the
- 0:12>> a critical error is an error which the
- 0:14OS cannot reasonably ignore. Jake
- 0:17Steinberg is a streamer, writer, and
- 0:19certified yapper. Complimentary. Peter
- 0:22Hunt. Spit tech
- 0:24is a YouTuber, journalist, and certified
- 0:26yapper. Derogatory. These are the things
- 0:29they cannot reasonably ignore.
- 0:31>> Names. Names matter. This is not my
- 0:35opinion. This is one of the oldest known
- 0:39facts of literature. In Romeo and
- 0:40Juliet, William Shakespeare famously
- 0:42wrote, "What's in a name? That which we
- 0:45call a rose by any other name would
- 0:47smell as sweet." And I have to say,
- 0:49>> yeah,
- 0:50>> maybe Shakespeare
- 0:52was [ __ ] wrong about this one. Okay,
- 0:56maybe this is the worst take in the
- 0:58entirety of the western ca western
- 1:00cannon. Okay, because imagine imagine
- 1:02imagine now that your your girlfriend,
- 1:04your wife gives you a beautiful bouquet
- 1:05of roses. You hold them up to your nose,
- 1:07you breathe deeply, and she says, "Do
- 1:09you like them? They're called flesh
- 1:10tubes."
- 1:12>> What would you think? IT WAS A DIFFERENT
- 1:14EXPERIENCE.
- 1:15>> I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT you mean. I saw
- 1:17someone say online once like, "Yo,
- 1:18whoever named the frog frogs, like they
- 1:22nailed it." And it's like true. It's
- 1:23exactly right. If they were called
- 1:24something else, I wouldn't like it.
- 1:26>> I like that a lot.
- 1:27>> And to your point, yeah, if they were
- 1:29like, "Yo, get a get a good whiff of
- 1:30those flesh tubes." Like,
- 1:32>> huh? No. And I And I don't even think
- 1:35Shakespeare himself believed this [ __ ]
- 1:36because he didn't call his play like two
- 1:39Italian teenagers killing themselves.
- 1:41You know what I mean? Like, he he knew
- 1:43he knew what he was doing. He knew that
- 1:44the names mattered. So names, the first
- 1:48act of interpretation before you play a
- 1:50video game, before you press start,
- 1:51before you even get hyped about it, the
- 1:54first thing that you are told a lot of
- 1:57the times is what the game is called.
- 1:59And I think that choice is powerful. The
- 2:02title can do something to you. It can
- 2:03withhold something from you. It can
- 2:05establish a framework that you play the
- 2:08entire game through. So, on today's
- 2:10episode, you and I have both assembled
- 2:13lists of game titles. Five good ones and
- 2:16five bad ones. I don't know what's on
- 2:18your list. You don't know what's on
- 2:19mine. I would like to take turns
- 2:22introducing a game on our lists, and the
- 2:24other one has to guess if they think
- 2:27it's good or bad.
- 2:30Can I say
- 2:31>> yes?
- 2:32>> My favorite thing,
- 2:33>> okay,
- 2:34>> is thinking about video game names
- 2:36because sometimes I mean do you ever
- 2:37play a game and you're like they got
- 2:39this very wrong. Like this should not
- 2:40have been called this. It should have
- 2:41been called something like all the time
- 2:42for me.
- 2:43>> Uh and I'm always curious too because I
- 2:46think that like obviously a game name is
- 2:47like marketing, right? Like that's the
- 2:48marketing. But it's also like you can
- 2:51tell when something I think got uh you
- 2:55can tell when they worked on it for too
- 2:56long I think.
- 2:57>> Okay. Okay. There's a game that just
- 2:59came out. I I guess it's part of a
- 3:01series. This series has completely
- 3:02escaped me entirely. The game is called
- 3:04Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. What
- 3:07>> is this on your list? Is this your first
- 3:09one or you just are you just right now?
- 3:11>> I'm just saying that like
- 3:13>> you guys you spent too long thinking of
- 3:15the name for that.
- 3:16>> Okay. Yes. Yeah, I agree. I just Okay.
- 3:18While we haven't started the game yet, I
- 3:20I want to say another one is Blood of
- 3:22the Dawn Walker. Kill yourself. Okay.
- 3:24Like that's that's
- 3:26>> Jake. You got the name wrong. It's not
- 3:27called Blood of the Dawn Walker. The
- 3:29Blood of the Dawn Walker, I believe.
- 3:32>> Like there's a the in there, right?
- 3:34>> Just Just Facebook.
- 3:36>> Just
- 3:36>> Oh, it's called Oh, excuse me. Excuse
- 3:37me. It is called Blood the Blood of Dawn
- 3:40Walker.
- 3:41>> Terrible. Wow, that's actually worse.
- 3:43Mine was better. They should have
- 3:44>> Blood of the Dawn Walker. Sure. Yeah.
- 3:46>> Okay. All right.
- 3:47>> What was this game? Oh, this just came
- 3:49out. This was like from the Witcher
- 3:50people, wasn't it?
- 3:52>> It was from ex Witcher people. Yeah.
- 3:53Yeah. So,
- 3:54>> all right. Anyway, um would you like to
- 3:56go? Would you like to go first? Would
- 3:57you like me to submit? What? What do you
- 3:58want?
- 3:59>> Yeah, I got one. I got one for you,
- 4:00Jake.
- 4:01>> In fact, let me take you Let me take you
- 4:03back a year and some change. Huh? A year
- 4:06and some change.
- 4:07>> Two two young starlets, the two of us
- 4:09are looking at each other trying to
- 4:10figure out if we're going to do a
- 4:11podcast. And what is the first podcast
- 4:14of the Critical Error uh uh catalog
- 4:17about? Of course, Donkey Kong Bonanza.
- 4:19Jake, is this a good name or a bad name?
- 4:20Donkey Kong Bonanza. I think you love
- 4:24this name.
- 4:25>> I think it's a brilliant name. I think
- 4:27it's like so good for a game that I
- 4:30don't like really at all, but it's a
- 4:32game that like it's a name that like
- 4:35>> it's the word banana.
- 4:37>> No.
- 4:38>> With a Z in it.
- 4:39>> No, this is bad. Let me stop you right
- 4:41there. This is not a good title.
- 4:43>> You think it's bad?
- 4:45>> This is not a good title. Donkey Kong
- 4:47Bonanza. It is bonanza with an O with
- 4:51banana shoved into it. This is the
- 4:53lowest form of video game titling. It is
- 4:56IP IP themed pun substitution. By this
- 5:00logic, you should have called Kirby Air
- 5:02Riders. Kirby air pinkers. Okay. You
- 5:05cannot just locate the noun that is
- 5:07associated with your mascot and replace
- 5:09the syllables. What does Bonanza tell me
- 5:11about this game, Peter? That there are a
- 5:13lot of bananas. Incredible. This is Poke
- 5:15Punk. THERE ARE ALWAYS A LOT of bananas.
- 5:18So, here's here you've revealed
- 5:19something actually to me that Bonanza is
- 5:22spelled with an O. That's correct.
- 5:25That I didn't know. And I think I will
- 5:27say I do believe that it is I've always
- 5:30thought it was B A N A N Z A because I
- 5:34think that's my accent.
- 5:36>> Let me tell you exactly what's going on
- 5:39here with this word.
- 5:41>> Okay.
- 5:41>> Bonanza already means an abundance of
- 5:44something valuable. So, bonanza. Bonanza
- 5:48means banana abundance. So, let me ask
- 5:50you this. Is a better title for this
- 5:53game. Donkey Kong colon too many
- 5:55bananas.
- 5:57>> No, it's not simply no. No.
- 6:00>> Although that was my feeling playing the
- 6:03game. That was the primary just like
- 6:04there's too many of these. Too many.
- 6:07Yeah. Uh do you do you really not like
- 6:09Donkey Kong Bonanza? I think it's I
- 6:11think it like slides off the tone so
- 6:12nice.
- 6:12>> I like I like I like the title. I just
- 6:14wanted
- 6:14>> I think it's good.
- 6:14>> I just wanted Yeah. No, I appreciate
- 6:16that. I appreciate that. But I will
- 6:18actually say this is kind of [ __ ] me
- 6:19up that bonanza is spelled with an O.
- 6:21There's certain words like that I will
- 6:23misspell and then like Google Docs will
- 6:25be like I don't know what you're trying
- 6:26to say. I'm like it's not that hard.
- 6:27Like I think bot like past tense of to
- 6:30have to like to buy has an A in it and
- 6:32it doesn't and Google's like what are
- 6:34you trying to say? I mean come on.
- 6:35>> Yeah, that's a tough one. So, I guess
- 6:37part of this is I I am a little bit
- 6:39compelled to think could I come up with
- 6:44a a a title that I like more if that is
- 6:48part of the challenge here, right?
- 6:51>> So,
- 6:51>> what do you So, like let's just say this
- 6:53is these aren't better titles. You're in
- 6:55the room. You're throwing stuff on the
- 6:56whiteboard. What kind of stuff
- 6:59>> are you putting on the Donkey Kong
- 7:01Bonanza
- 7:02>> whiteboard before they settle on
- 7:04Bonanza? I'm probably putting Donkey
- 7:07Kong Rampage on there.
- 7:09>> Wow. I love Donkey Kong Rampage
- 7:13>> cuz you're breaking so much stuff,
- 7:15right? Like you're you're like tunneling
- 7:17through all this sort of stuff. Uh the
- 7:20problem is I think Rampage maybe has
- 7:21like a negative connotation to it. You
- 7:23know what I mean? Like
- 7:24>> Yeah.
- 7:25>> But like I'm also thinking about uh is
- 7:28it Pauline or is it Paulina?
- 7:30>> It's Pauline.
- 7:31>> Pauline. Yes.
- 7:32>> Singing aorious voice. You know what I
- 7:35mean? And like but like Rampage isn't I
- 7:37don't know.
- 7:38>> Wow.
- 7:39>> Rampage is actually not bad.
- 7:40>> I know. No, I actually like I actually
- 7:42like what you were what you were
- 7:43thinking there with with the Pauline and
- 7:45the singing part of it because that's
- 7:47almost I think not
- 7:50>> a part of Okay.
- 7:52Donkey Kong rock and roll.
- 7:55>> Oh wait, this is good.
- 7:59>> Donkey Kong, you know. Okay. Like I
- 8:02think you could do Donkey Kong smash
- 8:04hit.
- 8:06>> Yep. Yep.
- 8:07>> That's not bad, right? Little Nandra
- 8:09with with the name
- 8:11>> cuz also I'm thinking like the key art
- 8:12too and he's like punching. He's like
- 8:14hitting the ground. You know what I
- 8:15mean?
- 8:15>> Donkey Kong Rockstar is pretty good.
- 8:20>> You could do some stuff.
- 8:21>> Yes. Yes. I don't know the word slam,
- 8:24but that's not like a music. want now is
- 8:26for the comments of this episode to be
- 8:28filled with people giving suggestions
- 8:31for better names for these games. Wow,
- 8:34that's good. Okay, wait. Can I Can I hit
- 8:35you with one now?
- 8:36>> Please, please.
- 8:37>> All right. I would like to submit
- 8:41Dragon's Dogma.
- 8:46I think it's probably not good.
- 8:49>> What makes you say that?
- 8:51>> Yeah. Um,
- 8:53I think it has to do with the word
- 8:54dogma. And listen, I get what the word
- 8:56dogma means, but dogma, it it
- 9:01I don't know. I think I get a little
- 9:03caught up like the word dog is right in
- 9:05there, and it just makes me think about
- 9:06a dragon's dog, ma. Yes. You know, I
- 9:10Yeah. No, I I I agree. Listen, I think
- 9:13that this is maybe an alltime bad video
- 9:17game title. Yeah,
- 9:18>> I love dragons dogma and it it pains me
- 9:23to say this. It pains me to say this,
- 9:27but like
- 9:29dragons possessive dogma.
- 9:32>> No.
- 9:33>> What does the dragon believe?
- 9:36>> Does the dragon subscribe to a
- 9:38theological framework?
- 9:40>> Is there we learn that? I I am not 100%
- 9:45sure, but I think Dragon's Dogma implies
- 9:47that somewhere in this game there is a
- 9:49dragon with like an extremely rigid
- 9:51position on on something. Yes.
- 9:53>> Yes. Yes. Exactly. And I just think like
- 9:56it is putting two fantasy ass words
- 9:59together and hoping for the best. I
- 10:01would agree because I also think that
- 10:03like
- 10:06>> because when I hear like dragons dogma,
- 10:08I start to think like like you got to
- 10:10reframe this in a way that is like a
- 10:11little bit more like like mysterious
- 10:13maybe or mystical or like I would say
- 10:15like and this is even a Capcom game,
- 10:17right? Like on Musha Way of the Sword I
- 10:19think is cool. Way of the Dragon, you
- 10:20know what I mean? Something like if you
- 10:22want to stick with dragons in there. Um
- 10:25what was the name of the what's the
- 10:26disease that your pawns can catch that
- 10:28where they kill everyone? Oh, I can't
- 10:30remember what it's called, but
- 10:31>> it's like dragon something.
- 10:32>> It is. Yeah. Yeah, it is.
- 10:35>> Uh, dragon's dogma disease.
- 10:39>> Wait, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
- 10:40>> Dragon's Plague. Dragon's Plague, I
- 10:41think, is a decent name.
- 10:42>> Dragon's Plague. That is what it is. I I
- 10:44have some startling news for you.
- 10:46>> Please.
- 10:47>> Capcom has information about what the
- 10:50title is and why it's called that. And
- 10:52their explanation is that the dragon,
- 10:55what the dragon teaches you, represents
- 10:57the game's underlying theme. And can I
- 11:00just say to Capcom right now, if they're
- 11:03listening, that's not how possessive
- 11:05works. You can't if my English teacher
- 11:08teaches me about Hamlet. I do not refer
- 11:10to Hamlet as Professor Mc, you know,
- 11:14Donny's Hamlet. That is that's not This
- 11:17is Oh, you know the Bible? Yeah. Moses's
- 11:20dogma.
- 11:23Yeah. And it's not it's just not how it
- 11:25works.
- 11:27>> What they've done is they've actually
- 11:28decided that they don't want to give it
- 11:30a title,
- 11:31>> right? It feels almost that they're like
- 11:33they didn't they decided not to title
- 11:34it. That they were like the dragon
- 11:36actually has the title really.
- 11:38>> And I think there's a lot of
- 11:40>> player um authoritative kind of stuff in
- 11:44these games. Like you get to kind of
- 11:45co-author what's happening in the story.
- 11:47And I feel like that just is the exact
- 11:49opposite of what the dragon's dogma.
- 11:51It's like it's like dragon's dogma to me
- 11:53is the Elder Scrolls Skyrim was taken.
- 11:56>> Oh yeah, 100%.
- 11:58>> You know what I'm saying? It's
- 11:59>> really bad. Really bad. So
- 12:02>> dragon needs a new name. I wish this
- 12:04this edition that was coming out this
- 12:05week. I wish it just had they were just
- 12:07like it's called something else now.
- 12:09>> Dark risen. Is that right?
- 12:11>> Yeah, but it's Dragon's Dogma 2.
- 12:13prison.
- 12:14>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:15>> This is a question I actually wanted to
- 12:16pose to you as well. Is Dragon's Dogma 2
- 12:19a better name? I think it's slightly
- 12:20better.
- 12:21>> Yeah, it is better. It takes It takes
- 12:23the focus off.
- 12:24>> Yeah, it does. It does. Cuz you're like,
- 12:25"Oh, a sequel." Oh, the first one must
- 12:27have been good despite it terrible
- 12:28title.
- 12:30>> Let me hit you with this.
- 12:31>> Let me hit you with this, Jake. Speaking
- 12:33of sequels,
- 12:34>> Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Good title, bad
- 12:36title.
- 12:39That's not right.
- 12:42>> That's not good, is it?
- 12:43>> No, that's that's not right. That's
- 12:45>> Yeah, that's
- 12:47>> Marvel's SP. So, this is a problem that
- 12:49we've been running into with uh Marvel
- 12:51games actually for for a while, I think,
- 12:54actually since u Marvel's Spider-Man one
- 12:58>> is that having to have Marvel's in the
- 13:02title is is like dumb, right? like
- 13:05Marvel's Wolverine, Marvel's And I think
- 13:07the reason I'm so caught up on Marvel's
- 13:10Spider-Man 2 is that Marvel's Spider-Man
- 13:13is really hard to say.
- 13:14>> You're right. That that that's very bad.
- 13:16Mhm.
- 13:17>> Um and I also think that just calling it
- 13:19two is is I don't know. There's already
- 13:20a game called Spider-Man 2 that when we
- 13:22think of we know what it is, right?
- 13:24>> But Peter, have you considered that the
- 13:25number is diagetic and this is Marvel's
- 13:27Spider-Man 2 because there are two
- 13:29Spider-Man
- 13:30>> Spider-Man. But is there a third
- 13:32spoilers I suppose at the end? Isn't
- 13:34there like a
- 13:34>> Oh, no.
- 13:38No. There's two on the cover. I guess
- 13:40there's two on the cover. I suppose
- 13:41that's true, but it's bad, right?
- 13:45Marvel's the Spider-Man 2. Anytime I
- 13:47have to like had to say it in a video
- 13:48script when I was working at Dual
- 13:50Shockers. I think that's when that came
- 13:51out. I just felt dumb cuz I had to like
- 13:53resay it a bunch cuz like Marvel's
- 13:55Spider-Man, you know what I mean? Sure.
- 13:58But like Marvel's Avengers
- 14:01is Spider. So, okay. So, what's a what's
- 14:05a what's a better what's a better title?
- 14:07>> I think you just got to get rid of first
- 14:08of all, get rid of Marvel's. I think
- 14:10like my main problem here is Marvel's I
- 14:13know. [ __ ] It's Spider-Man. I know he's
- 14:15Marvel.
- 14:15>> Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man too,
- 14:18>> too.
- 14:19>> Yeah.
- 14:22I I I guess I don't have like Okay,
- 14:25Marvel needs to go. Yeah, please.
- 14:27>> You can't get rid of Marvel's, but you
- 14:28have to give it a new subtitle. That is
- 14:30That is not two. Let me let me throw a
- 14:33few at you.
- 14:33>> Yeah. Marvel's Spider-Man Web of Two.
- 14:39>> Okay.
- 14:40>> Okay. Um you got You got some more.
- 14:43>> I got some more. I got some more. Um Um
- 14:47Marvel Spider-Man colon greater
- 14:50responsibility.
- 14:52>> Okay, sure. Because there's two require
- 14:54more responsibility.
- 14:55>> Marvel Spider-Man 2.
- 14:59No. Marvel Spider-Man.
- 15:04>> Tangled.
- 15:06>> Tangled. Okay. Sure. Tangled. Kind of a
- 15:08Disney crossover there. So,
- 15:09>> here's here's what what if we got rid of
- 15:11Spider-Man in general?
- 15:14>> Whoa. Wait, now you're talking to me.
- 15:16>> Marvel's web of something or Mar, you
- 15:19know what I mean?
- 15:19>> That's awesome. Actually,
- 15:22>> you know what I mean? I know it's
- 15:23Spider-Man. He's on the [ __ ] cover. I
- 15:24know what he looks like. Impossible to
- 15:26mistake. Marvel's webs between us.
- 15:32There's something.
- 15:33>> Okay. All right.
- 15:35Um.
- 15:36>> Yeah.
- 15:37>> Okay. Let me let me give you a little
- 15:38softball here.
- 15:38>> Yeah. Yeah. Super Smash Brothers.
- 15:41>> It's good. It's good.
- 15:45>> It's really good.
- 15:46>> It's good. It's good.
- 15:48>> They got it in one.
- 15:50>> Yes.
- 15:50>> And I even think because what are the
- 15:52So, Super Smash Bros, Super Smash Bros.
- 15:55Melee. I think it's good. Uh, Brawl is
- 15:58very good cuz also
- 16:03>> it was called Super Smash Brothers 4 Wii
- 16:05U, but it was the fourth game.
- 16:09>> Uh, okay. So, we're That one That one's
- 16:12bad cuz I played the one on the 2DS as
- 16:13well.
- 16:14>> It was just called Super Smash Brothers.
- 16:16Like they just It's
- 16:16>> That's right. No, it's called Super
- 16:18Smash Brothers 4 Wii U.
- 16:19>> Is it really?
- 16:20>> Yes. And then the 3DS one is called
- 16:22Super Smash Bros. 4 3DS
- 16:24>> and with a Is it with a four or is it F?
- 16:27>> No. No, it's F.
- 16:29>> Okay. Well,
- 16:29>> but he's he's trusting you,
- 16:32>> I guess. So,
- 16:33>> yeah. Listen listen, they took they took
- 16:37Super Mario Brothers.
- 16:38>> Yeah.
- 16:39>> And he was like, "Okay, we're going to
- 16:40we're going to we're going to physically
- 16:41assault it. Smash. We we insert that.
- 16:44That's the game, baby." And they aren't
- 16:47like,
- 16:49you know, I think I think somebody not
- 16:50as intelligent would have called it
- 16:52Nintendo Allstar Fighting or Correct
- 16:55>> or Super Smashers, but no,
- 16:58>> Smash Brothers. The this is this is
- 17:01delightful because the language of the
- 17:03platformer has been invaded by violence
- 17:07in the same way that like Link is is
- 17:12going to invade the Mushroom Kingdom and
- 17:15beat Mario to death with a sword.
- 17:18>> Yeah.
- 17:19>> Okay. It's it's really good. I I think
- 17:23>> I like the imagery in the title, too.
- 17:25Mhm.
- 17:25>> So like smash I think is obviously like
- 17:27the the main word here that is like just
- 17:30just like so much imagery associated
- 17:33with what that is. And then now of
- 17:34course we know like what Smash means in
- 17:36the context of that game. But even then
- 17:38Smash is like demolish, right? It's it's
- 17:40like this like big sort of like it's
- 17:42loud. A smash is like a very loud sound
- 17:45and and like whatever.
- 17:47>> But then like a super smash is like oh
- 17:50[ __ ] it's a really big that's a big one.
- 17:52brothers. It's like there's conflict.
- 17:54Like what's happened to this family?
- 17:55>> See, no, I like brothers because it's
- 17:57like they are the it makes it so that
- 17:59the characters are placed in
- 18:01relationship with each other. So, it's
- 18:03like it's like, oh, we're bros.
- 18:05>> We're we've we've invented a fake
- 18:07familiar relationship and it's like, no,
- 18:09we're just having fun, though. We're
- 18:10just having fun. It's all in good fun.
- 18:12>> I I completely agree. I think it's
- 18:15You're so right though. The fact that
- 18:16like the word like Nintendo is not in
- 18:17there at all is like awesome cuz I think
- 18:20it would ruin it, right? Nintendo's
- 18:22Super Smash Brothers terrible, right?
- 18:24>> Um
- 18:25>> that's why like even cuz what was what's
- 18:27the one you like? The PlayStation one?
- 18:28PlayStation Allstars Battle Royale.
- 18:31>> Yeah.
- 18:31>> Like that's a really bad title.
- 18:34>> The the title that when it was in
- 18:36development it was Title Fight and that
- 18:38was a better title.
- 18:39>> That's way better. It's also
- 18:40>> it's very it's annoying. Yeah. But I
- 18:43mean like because you had to have the
- 18:45PlayStation branding in there. It's like
- 18:47no no no let it be what it is and if
- 18:49it's good it'll be good. Yep.
- 18:51>> Um because now I think like Super Smash
- 18:53Bros. is like I mean of course it's it's
- 18:56such a popular title like it's popular
- 18:57game series but it is synonymous with
- 18:59Nintendo right like
- 19:00>> Oh yeah.
- 19:01>> without even being you know Nintendo
- 19:03branded really.
- 19:04>> Oh yeah.
- 19:04>> Other than just being the one of the
- 19:05games. Um let me with this. Okay. Okay.
- 19:08Okay. Stick it in N N N N N N N N N N N
- 19:09N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N
- 19:09N N N N N N N N Nintendo Metroid Dread
- 19:15Bad. You think it's bad? I think it's
- 19:17pretty good.
- 19:17>> Yeah. No, no, no, no. Yeah, Metroid
- 19:19Dread. That's bad. Metroid Dread.
- 19:20>> What do you like about it?
- 19:22>> Well, what do you like about it?
- 19:24>> I think that it's Dread. It's like
- 19:26scary. And I think it makes me think of
- 19:28Dread. Like Judge Dread, which is like
- 19:30cool. Um I you know what I mean? Like
- 19:33like it's brutal. Uh it's kind of
- 19:36spooky. Uh, that's the game where you're
- 19:38being chased by those like big robots
- 19:40you can't kill and it gets really
- 19:41stressful when you're in there. And I
- 19:43think that uh it's Snappy Metroid Dread
- 19:47the Dr. the DRDR in there. You know what
- 19:51I'm saying?
- 19:51>> No. No. I think that
- 19:54>> Yeah.
- 19:54>> It's like if you called a game It's like
- 19:57imagine Nintendo comes out with Luigi's
- 20:00Mansion colon anxious.
- 20:04>> Yeah, I GUESS THAT'S FAIR. YOU KNOW, I I
- 20:07SUPPOSE that's fair. I just Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:10Yeah. That is true. Resident Evil
- 20:13unease.
- 20:16>> Well, I'll say this. Resident Evil is
- 20:18already like very silly. This house is
- 20:21[ __ ] bad. We don't like this guy at
- 20:23all. Um, I'll say that Metroid Ravenous,
- 20:26I think, is a terrible title.
- 20:28>> That's okay. Now, hold on a second
- 20:30there, Buckaroo.
- 20:31>> You like Ravenous?
- 20:32>> I don't know. I guess I I guess Let me
- 20:35Okay. Okay.
- 20:36>> Big hungry. Should have called it that.
- 20:38>> That's See, now we're now we're cooking.
- 20:40That's really nice.
- 20:41>> Yeah.
- 20:42>> So, like
- 20:44>> I just think dread is like somebody
- 20:47again going back to the whiteboard. I
- 20:49could see the whiteboard where somebody
- 20:51wrote fear.
- 20:53>> Terrible.
- 20:53>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:54>> Darkness. And they just and they just
- 20:57went with dread and I'm supposed to
- 20:58believe them, you know? It's like it's
- 21:01it's
- 21:02>> to me it's it's almost like
- 21:06coming out with a literary fiction novel
- 21:08and it's like Jake, what's the title of
- 21:09your book?
- 21:11>> Trauma. Yeah, I get that is fair. That
- 21:14is fair. Um
- 21:18I think uh I will say this, the Metroid
- 21:22series I think has a lot of really bad
- 21:23titles, truth be told. I think Metroid
- 21:25Prime, great title. I think Metroid
- 21:28Prime 2 colon echoes is stupid.
- 21:30>> Okay.
- 21:31>> Like, and then adding addition like
- 21:33Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. Okay, who
- 21:35cares, right? Like, these these
- 21:36subtitles are stupid. Metroid Prime.
- 21:38Great. Great.
- 21:40>> Had Metroid Prime Hunters. Remember
- 21:41that?
- 21:42>> Yeah.
- 21:42>> What if this game was called Metroid
- 21:44Colon Hunted?
- 21:46>> Hunted. Bad. Bad. I think past tense
- 21:48titles is no good.
- 21:52>> All right. Well, comment, I challenge
- 21:54you. I challenge you to come up with a
- 21:56better come up with a better title. All
- 21:58right.
- 21:58>> Metroid Prime. There's a bird in this
- 22:00one. Or no, it wasn't Prime. Metroid.
- 22:03There's a It's a bird
- 22:05prime for Poland psychic.
- 22:09>> Did that one have a subtitle?
- 22:11>> It it
- 22:14beyond.
- 22:15>> Oh, that's a bad name.
- 22:17>> That's a bad title.
- 22:20>> Why' they call it that? Why did anyone
- 22:23believe this was a good video?
- 22:28>> Okay. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Get Get another
- 22:30one.
- 22:31>> The world ends with you.
- 22:41What if I said this? I think it's a good
- 22:42title. I think it's not a great video
- 22:44game title.
- 22:46Oh,
- 22:47>> what does that mean?
- 22:49>> I think what I mean by that is we just
- 22:51in the the conventions of naming video
- 22:54games, I think it sort of exists outside
- 22:58of the the naming conventions that we
- 23:01typically assign to video games. Um,
- 23:04I'm not saying it's like a bad title
- 23:06because I think it's actually a good
- 23:07title, but I wonder if it's a good video
- 23:10game title. Again, given the conventions
- 23:12we usually use,
- 23:13>> I think that this is an all in the
- 23:16conversation for alltime great video
- 23:18game titles. I think that if it's not
- 23:21this, there are two maybe other games
- 23:23that I would put it in conversation
- 23:25with. I that's how strongly I feel about
- 23:27this. I think that you could print these
- 23:29words across a t-shirt or a messenger
- 23:33bag and people would like [ __ ] ride
- 23:36with this. This is this to me is a video
- 23:39game title. Whereas I look at Dragon's
- 23:41Dogma and it's like the words evaporate
- 23:44out of my brain the second I like like
- 23:46like here's here's what we're working
- 23:47with. You've got the the main character
- 23:49in this game. I love this game. He's
- 23:50this antisocial little freak and he's
- 23:52walking around Japan. He's got these
- 23:53giant headphones on because his
- 23:56fundamental philosophical position in
- 23:58the world is that I don't want to hear
- 23:59anybody else talk. That's our guy.
- 24:01That's the hero of the story. It's
- 24:04awesome. Okay. And like
- 24:08the game looks directly at this little
- 24:11[ __ ] and says the world ends with you.
- 24:15What does that mean?
- 24:16>> And I think it I think it's an
- 24:18interesting philosophical question
- 24:19almost as the premise being your world
- 24:21is exactly as big as you allow it to be.
- 24:25That's the whole game. The world ends
- 24:27with you. And Neku, this guy, he thinks
- 24:30that everything that the world is
- 24:32something outside of him that sucks. But
- 24:34he's wrong. The world sucks because he
- 24:37sets the the the his purview of the
- 24:40world to six feet around him.
- 24:42>> It's got to take the headphones off.
- 24:45>> I love this.
- 24:47>> I do like when the title of something
- 24:50interacts with what it's about or like
- 24:52what it is. I'm I'm struggling to think
- 24:54of another example of it um like right
- 24:56off the top of my head, but yeah, cuz I
- 24:58like I really really like that. Um, also
- 25:01I like when it a title like makes you go
- 25:04like,
- 25:05>> "Oh, nice." Like I get it now. Yes. Um,
- 25:09yes. This isn't on my list, but a bad
- 25:13example of this is Resident Evil
- 25:16Reququum. Did you you played that,
- 25:17right?
- 25:18>> Not yet.
- 25:19>> Oh, okay. Do you know why it's called
- 25:20that?
- 25:21>> No.
- 25:24>> It's because uh No,
- 25:25>> it's because the big gun you have is
- 25:27called the Reququum. Oh, well that's not
- 25:29what I was expecting. It's
- 25:30>> just not that interesting. Like, you
- 25:32know what I mean? You get the gun and
- 25:34it's like, oh my gosh, obtained the
- 25:36reququum and you're like, okay,
- 25:37>> wow.
- 25:38>> I think that's not that interesting.
- 25:40>> You always get big guns in Resident
- 25:42Evil.
- 25:42>> Yeah.
- 25:43>> Who cares? The gun's like not important.
- 25:46It's like not important at all. I don't
- 25:48know. I thought it was interesting, but
- 25:49it's like Oh, yeah. And it felt it felt
- 25:51like it was like a moment that you were
- 25:53supposed to be like, "What? That's why
- 25:54it's called that?" But you're like, "I
- 25:55don't know."
- 25:56>> Um,
- 25:57>> all right. All right, here's one for
- 25:58you.
- 25:58>> Mhm.
- 26:00>> Metaphor reefantasio.
- 26:05>> No.
- 26:07>> Bad.
- 26:08>> Really? No. You think it's bad?
- 26:09>> All uh extremely bad.
- 26:11>> It's like an all-time bad one. And
- 26:13here's why.
- 26:13>> All time. That's on the other end of the
- 26:15spectrum as The World Ends With You.
- 26:17>> So, uh I was talking with my wife's
- 26:22friend's husband. So, about as loosely
- 26:25as you could possibly know someone. Yep.
- 26:27Yep. Yep. Yep.
- 26:28>> And all he knew about me was that I work
- 26:31in games in some capacity. And so this
- 26:33was two years ago at this point. And
- 26:36he's like, "Hey, uh, like what uh what
- 26:39kind of games are you you looking
- 26:41forward to this year?"
- 26:43>> No, bro. Don't do this.
- 26:44>> And I was like, "Oh, like I was like, do
- 26:47you play a lot of games?" He's like,
- 26:47"Yeah, I play a bunch of video games."
- 26:49And I was like, "Cool." And I thought we
- 26:50were both sort of on the same page. And
- 26:52I was like, this is before I found out
- 26:54that the game is not very good, but I
- 26:56was of course because it wasn't out yet.
- 26:57I was like, "Oh, there's that uh game
- 26:59from the Persona people. It's Metaphor
- 27:00Reefantio." And he looked at me as if I
- 27:03grew a second head. And I and he was
- 27:06like, "What?" And I had to be like, it's
- 27:09like a it's like a fantasy thing. And he
- 27:12like straight up no recognition, no
- 27:13idea. And I was like, "What are you what
- 27:15are you looking forward to?" He's like,
- 27:16"Ah, the Elen Ring DLC." And I was like,
- 27:17"Yeah, me too." And then I'd move on. I
- 27:19think a bad title is embarrassing to say
- 27:22out loud.
- 27:23>> Yeah. But also, it's like it's like
- 27:26worse than embarrassing to say out loud
- 27:28because it's also trying to be like
- 27:31smart and stylish.
- 27:32>> It thinks it's doing something and it's
- 27:34not.
- 27:34>> It's Imagine if you had an album come
- 27:37out and you titled it music colon remlo.
- 27:42>> Yes. No, it's not good. It's not good.
- 27:46It's It's like straight up embarrassing.
- 27:47And also like I'm not even totally sure
- 27:50if I'm pronouncing it right.
- 27:52>> We're going to go back and we're going
- 27:54to rename Moby Dick into
- 27:58allegory colon rehale.
- 28:02>> Yeah. Good.
- 28:02>> That's good.
- 28:04>> Is fantasio is that a word I don't know
- 28:06or is that just something they made up?
- 28:08>> I think it's something.
- 28:10>> It feels like it feels like fantasy a
- 28:12little. Right. But like
- 28:13>> Mhm. and then re to to re to do it
- 28:16again.
- 28:17>> It's actually I haven't thought about
- 28:18this in so long. It's like crazy to be
- 28:20like, "Hello audience, please be advised
- 28:23that what follows is a metaphor."
- 28:26>> Can you imagine? Well, dude, and the
- 28:27game starts that way. It's like the
- 28:29world is so crazy and this might be some
- 28:32something about it. And I remember too
- 28:34that game came out right after
- 28:37>> uh the the assassination attempt on on
- 28:40Donald Trump. Do you remember this? And
- 28:42then it had to at least it felt like to
- 28:44me it felt like the start of the game
- 28:46goes like don't do political violence
- 28:48just so you know this is not this is not
- 28:50don't do what happens in the game and
- 28:52it's like
- 28:53>> well I I want I wonder
- 28:57>> bad name.
- 28:58>> So is refantio just fantasy again?
- 29:01>> I think
- 29:02>> metaphor
- 29:04fantasy is it metaphor colon or I
- 29:06thought it was metaphor recon fantasio.
- 29:09>> Oh well that that's okay. Wow, how could
- 29:12I have how could I have made that
- 29:14mistake?
- 29:15>> Uh, no. I'm I'm incorrect. It is
- 29:17metaphor colon re and then fant but it's
- 29:20a capital R E capital F fantasio. What
- 29:24does that even mean?
- 29:25>> It's this is symbolic and a fantasy
- 29:28story.
- 29:30>> Again
- 29:35I can I tell you something? Uh
- 29:37>> I just keep thinking I'm so sorry. I
- 29:38just keep thinking irony
- 29:41juxtopizio.
- 29:43>> Well, dude. OKAY, SO AGAIN, THINK ABOUT
- 29:44LIKE THEY'RE AT they're at the
- 29:46whiteboard, right? And they're like,
- 29:47what do we call this game?
- 29:49>> It's good.
- 29:49>> How did they land on this?
- 29:51>> It's good.
- 29:51>> Like, how did they land how did they
- 29:53land on this?
- 29:54>> Mhm. Mhm.
- 29:55>> What was the At what point did was there
- 29:58no one who said, "Guys, we can't do
- 30:00this." Like, it can't be called this.
- 30:02You if you can't remember this, if you
- 30:04can't like doodle this logo, then you
- 30:06can't make this the game.
- 30:08Wow. If you can't do doodle the logo,
- 30:11that's good, actually.
- 30:13>> No, I I'm not kidding. Uh I'm I'm
- 30:15working on, you know, like writing new
- 30:16music and stuff.
- 30:17>> Yeah.
- 30:18>> And I have like thought to myself like,
- 30:20is there a line in this verse, in this
- 30:22chorus, in whatever that if I were a kid
- 30:25again that I would and I heard, I would
- 30:27write on the back of my notebook. And if
- 30:29the answer was no, then I need to to go
- 30:30back and and work on it again. The world
- 30:32>> because you have to have something,
- 30:33right? The world ends with you. You
- 30:34could write on a notebook and you you'd
- 30:36like write the logo up and it looks so
- 30:37sick, right? Metaphor reantasio. Get the
- 30:40[ __ ] out of here.
- 30:41>> Okay. All right.
- 30:42>> Yeah. Let me let me hit you with this
- 30:44one.
- 30:44>> Mhm.
- 30:46>> Near Automata.
- 30:47>> Okay. Let me hit you with one. I got
- 30:49Near Automata. Uh, it's bad. It's bad.
- 30:52Okay.
- 30:53>> It's bad.
- 30:54>> It's really bad. Oh my god. I think it's
- 30:57like I think it only appeals to somebody
- 31:01who doesn't want to do any reading but
- 31:04wants to imagine that they have
- 31:05encountered a philosophy class syllabus.
- 31:09It I mean it's just can I can we just
- 31:11start by saying the title near is bad.
- 31:15Yeah, that's bad. And because also not
- 31:17to get back on the capitalization thing
- 31:18here, but it's capital N I E capital R.
- 31:22>> What are we doing here? Like truly what
- 31:24are we doing? And then yeah, automata.
- 31:27It's also tough because it's like, is it
- 31:29automata? Is it automa? I call it
- 31:31automa, but I might be wrong. I'm like
- 31:33willing to accept that I'm wrong about
- 31:35it. It's not good. Can I ask a question?
- 31:38>> Yeah. Near. Mhm.
- 31:41What do we What is that? So that's
- 31:43that's the name of somebody,
- 31:45>> correct? And they are a robot.
- 31:49>> No.
- 31:51So, okay. Are you sure?
- 31:54>> Yes. They're not a robot.
- 31:56>> That is correct.
- 31:58>> Okay.
- 31:58>> So, Ne is in the first game. Near is the
- 32:00main character of the first game.
- 32:03>> And depending on which version you
- 32:05played, he's either like a young boy or
- 32:08like a grizzly dad.
- 32:10>> Okay.
- 32:10>> In America, they made him a grizzly dad
- 32:13because they thought that was going to
- 32:14be more appealing. And then in Japan,
- 32:16he's like a young young fellow. And then
- 32:18in the when they remade the game near
- 32:21version 1 point a bunch of numbers they
- 32:24just went back with the original
- 32:25Japanese where he's like a young young
- 32:27lad that the main character's name is
- 32:29Near of that game and then the sequel of
- 32:31course Near Automa is set you know uh
- 32:342,000 years after that first game. So
- 32:37he's not in it at all. Like it's not
- 32:39related to him at all. Like there's
- 32:40nothing there's it's not related to him
- 32:43at all. So, it's it's kind of a puzzling
- 32:46name now, isn't it?
- 32:48>> So, just to be clear, dear Automata is
- 32:51name of person colon robots.
- 32:54>> Yes.
- 32:54>> Okay.
- 32:54>> Yes. It's it's name of a boy who's not
- 32:57in this,
- 32:58>> right?
- 32:58>> And there's robots, by the way.
- 32:59>> Much like how we all know it as
- 33:02Frankenstein, but originally it was
- 33:04Jerry Colon Monster.
- 33:06>> Yes. Correct.
- 33:07>> Okay. Just just All right. Just Just
- 33:09making that clear. Um
- 33:10>> Yeah. I think it's a I think it's a
- 33:12really bad title
- 33:13>> cuz that's also it's not this it's not I
- 33:15don't think it's as bad as metaphor
- 33:16reefantasio but it's also one where like
- 33:19if you say it and the person doesn't
- 33:21know what it is they're going to go what
- 33:22did you say and you have to be like
- 33:24nothing never mind don't worry about it
- 33:26it's yes you're no there is something
- 33:27about the words that by choosing those
- 33:30extremely esoteric words you are you are
- 33:32like appealing to somebody that I just
- 33:35don't want to spend time with. I'm just
- 33:36like I'm so sorry like we can't be
- 33:38friends. Dude, you know what's
- 33:39interesting about Near is that like I've
- 33:41had two conversations about it in my
- 33:43life with another with other people
- 33:44where I've been like that was good. And
- 33:45then the rest of the conversations I've
- 33:46been like I wish I didn't have that, you
- 33:49know. Um I've been I've been meaning to
- 33:52revisit that game too because I I like
- 33:53it a lot in my memory, but I haven't
- 33:56played it since like 2019 or 2020, you
- 33:59know?
- 33:59>> Right.
- 33:59>> So, I'd be curious. I'd be curious how
- 34:01how it holds up to me as as this thing.
- 34:06>> Here's another one. Yeah, tell me.
- 34:08>> Star Wars Jedi fall in order
- 34:15>> Star Wars Jedi
- 34:17>> Fallen. It's too much. No, I'm sorry.
- 34:19No,
- 34:20>> it is too much. But I do like it.
- 34:23I And And cuz here's what I'm also
- 34:25thinking, right? If you cut Star Wars
- 34:28out of it.
- 34:28>> Uhhuh.
- 34:29>> And if you because you can, right? Cuz
- 34:30like Star Wars is the name of the
- 34:32series, right? But if you just call it
- 34:33Jedi Fall in Order, I think it works.
- 34:37>> How could you say this?
- 34:38>> How could I say what?
- 34:39>> How could you say this after How is this
- 34:41different from Marvel Spider-Man 2? It's
- 34:43that for some reason everybody calls it
- 34:47Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and for another
- 34:50for a different I guess reason people
- 34:52just will call this one Jedi Fall in
- 34:53Order. I don't know why.
- 34:56Don't know why. But I also don't think
- 34:57Star Wars Jedi Fall in Order is
- 34:59terrible. I also when you abbreviate it
- 35:01when if you're just like oh I really
- 35:03liked fall in order I think it works
- 35:05>> this you are defending right now
- 35:09>> there wasn't even a whiteboard for this
- 35:11game just so you're aware this was this
- 35:13was franchise SEO the video game title
- 35:18they said they said okay first we got to
- 35:19get Star Wars good okay now we got to
- 35:21get Jedi and it's like okay we got to
- 35:23get a couple of other things now they're
- 35:25going to go fall in order that's good
- 35:27then what the [ __ ] is the fallen order
- 35:29>> the order of Jedi.
- 35:31It's fallen.
- 35:34So, so Jedi fall in or it's the Jedi
- 35:37fall in order. Star Wars Jedi fall in
- 35:39order.
- 35:40>> That is correct. But instead, we're
- 35:41calling it Jedi fall in order.
- 35:43>> Correct. And here's the problem. What I
- 35:46will say that I maybe don't like about
- 35:47this is that it's Star Wars Jedi colon
- 35:50fall in order. I guess it should be Star
- 35:51Wars colon Jedi
- 35:54colon fall in order or just Star Wars
- 35:57col Jedi fall in order.
- 35:59But I do I do I think Jedi fall in
- 36:01order. And now I've said Jedi too many
- 36:03times and it's not it's kind of sounded
- 36:05wrong in my mind. I think Jedi Fall in
- 36:07Order is a is a good name for a video
- 36:08game about a a little magical boy who
- 36:11has to go find the rest of his magical
- 36:13friends.
- 36:16I think the fact that this game title
- 36:17starts with the word Star Wars is
- 36:19distracting you from how bad the title
- 36:21is because I think if you because I
- 36:23think Jedi fallen order is total garbage
- 36:28because it doesn't make any sense. The
- 36:30order has fallen. The Jedi order Jedi
- 36:34or the Jedi Order Jedi Order had fallen.
- 36:37Oh my god, that is absolute garbage. I
- 36:39can't even tell you if this is the
- 36:41original or the sequel. I have no idea.
- 36:42>> So, let me hit you with this. Also on my
- 36:44list is Star Wars Jedi Survivor.
- 36:50>> Bad. It's really bad. Okay. It's really
- 36:53bad. I like cuz everything here, Jake,
- 36:56what I'll tell you right now, everything
- 36:58you just said is correct, right? That
- 37:00like like it's like it's the first one
- 37:02is confus like it's confusing whatever.
- 37:04But I like the syllables. I don't know.
- 37:06I think it there's something about it
- 37:07that works for me. Star Wars Jedi
- 37:09Survivor because Fall in Or if you said
- 37:11like, "Did you play Fall in Order?" I
- 37:12would be like, "Yeah, I did." If you
- 37:14said, "Did you play Survivor?" I would
- 37:15be like, "Are you referring to the the
- 37:18reality television series hosted by Jeff
- 37:20Proes?" Like, "No, I've not played it
- 37:22yet. I would love to. I mean, sign me
- 37:24up." Um, are you watching that new
- 37:26season, by the way?
- 37:27>> Not yet. I haven't started. I'm saving.
- 37:29>> I also haven't.
- 37:30>> I also haven't. Um, yeah, I think Star
- 37:32Wars Jedi Survivor is really, really
- 37:34bad. It's like a because I think you're
- 37:36right about like they did the they
- 37:37didn't use the whiteboard for the first
- 37:38one and the second one they're like
- 37:39whiteboard and it's like uh you didn't
- 37:42have it.
- 37:43>> I agree. And it's like oh so he's a
- 37:45survivor.
- 37:47>> I guess they survived in the first one
- 37:48too.
- 37:49>> That's just every protag protagonist
- 37:51that's in a sequel. You you're you made
- 37:53it.
- 37:54>> Yeah. Other than right. I mean hey he's
- 37:56just not in it. It's just it's Super
- 37:57Mario Later.
- 37:58>> Super Mario Brothers 2. Mario Survivor.
- 38:04It is. That is a very silly. Yeah. Like
- 38:07Yeah. The main characters survived and
- 38:09so here they are again.
- 38:11>> Mhm.
- 38:15Pokemon Sun and Moon.
- 38:21>> Good. I think it's good.
- 38:24>> You don't like it?
- 38:26>> I like it a lot.
- 38:28>> I like it a lot
- 38:29>> cuz here's here's the thing about the
- 38:30Pokemon games, right? They've had um
- 38:32duality, right? They're very interested
- 38:34in duality.
- 38:35>> Um
- 38:37>> and
- 38:38they were doing sort of colors and then
- 38:40like like gems and stuff and then it's
- 38:42like sun and moon. What what what could
- 38:45be uh uh uh what what's more tied than
- 38:48the two of those uh celestial bodies? I
- 38:52think this is
- 38:55something that I appreciate even more
- 38:57when I zoom out and I look at the entire
- 38:59franchise because if you start with the
- 39:00history here, of course, you start with
- 39:02red and blue. Yep.
- 39:03>> And it's like, okay, a couple of colors.
- 39:05We're establishing the franchise. I'll
- 39:06give you a little pass.
- 39:07>> Um, gold and silver. Okay, we we
- 39:09escalate.
- 39:10>> These are precious metals. Okay.
- 39:13>> Ruby and sapphire.
- 39:15>> I don't know. Gems,
- 39:17>> diamond and pearl. I'm sorry. We're
- 39:19still on rocks.
- 39:21And then and then you go to black and
- 39:23white and to me it's like we have run
- 39:25out of rocks.
- 39:26>> Well, the problem here is is we've run
- 39:28out of rocks and didn't do anything. We
- 39:30just went back to the first ones and
- 39:33then but it's like then they do then
- 39:35they do X and Y and they're like we've
- 39:37run out of words.
- 39:38>> We we've ran out. We we red and blue,
- 39:40black and white. No more colors.
- 39:43>> Oh my god. So I think Sun and Moon is
- 39:46good because of like the scale, you
- 39:48know? There's there's there's something
- 39:49there that is um like
- 39:52>> you know human beings have been staring
- 39:54at the sun and the moon forever. It's
- 39:56like you don't you don't need Pokemon
- 39:57lore to understand the relationship. You
- 39:59don't need to know like black and white
- 40:02truth and ideals or whatever those games
- 40:04think they're about. You know, it's just
- 40:06like you you look up they're
- 40:07complimentary. They're they're they're
- 40:09big. They're they're you know they're
- 40:10enormous. That is a that is a pair of
- 40:12like like awesome things. And I think
- 40:14like Sun and Moon, what's good about
- 40:16them is that they exist relationally as
- 40:19well. So it's not just like two random
- 40:21things out of like maybe six possible
- 40:24things,
- 40:24>> right? Cuz when you look at like Ruby
- 40:26and Sapphire, it's just kind of an
- 40:28illusion back to Red and Blue, right?
- 40:30>> But like in real life, there's no
- 40:33connection between rubies and sapphires
- 40:35really. But Sun and Moon, look at that.
- 40:37>> And then when you pick up Pokemon Sun,
- 40:39you're playing the game, it's normal,
- 40:41you don't even notice something's weird.
- 40:42You play Pokemon Moon. Do you know this?
- 40:44It's 12 hours off. So,
- 40:45>> do I know this? That's the version I
- 40:47played.
- 40:47>> Me, too. Me, too. And
- 40:48>> so, it was always dark out.
- 40:50>> It's like Spongebob when he's when he's
- 40:51like when he's like at night.
- 40:53>> At night. Yeah.
- 40:54>> Exactly. So, that's awesome.
- 40:56>> Yeah. It's cool. It's cool. I also I
- 40:57like that they do that specifically,
- 41:00too, that like, you know, in all the
- 41:02Pokemon games there's like, oh, what's
- 41:03the regional differences? Whatever. But
- 41:04then, um, there's like actually a
- 41:07difference. You know what I mean? Like,
- 41:08there's actually like a tangible
- 41:09difference.
- 41:10>> Um, and then they went back to colors
- 41:12again. and Scarlet and Violet. And
- 41:13that's bad. That's bad. That's their
- 41:15worst actually
- 41:17because then also the Scarlet was
- 41:19orange.
- 41:20>> It wasn't red. Scarlet was orange.
- 41:22>> Listen, they have been fumbling the
- 41:24names lately cuz Sword and Shield is
- 41:28awful.
- 41:29>> It's awful. They just They just looked
- 41:31at a knight and they were like, "All
- 41:32right, we'll take the Sword and the
- 41:33Shield." Like, it's it's
- 41:36>> Oh, man. They They've Winds and Waves
- 41:38were back on track.
- 41:39>> Winds and Waves is back on track.
- 41:40Pokemon Legends ZA is one of the worst
- 41:42titles of all time.
- 41:44>> No,
- 41:45>> no,
- 41:46>> no.
- 41:49Z no. I can't believe you would even say
- 41:52that.
- 41:53>> What's good about it? How about How
- 41:54about this?
- 41:59>> Are you asking me? Uh-huh. Okay.
- 42:02>> Nothing. It's bad. It's a bad title.
- 42:04>> Here we go. Here we go. The normal
- 42:06order. A to Z.
- 42:10I know. I know.
- 42:11>> Beginning to end. Okay. Progress.
- 42:13Forward movement. Whoa. Pokemon looked
- 42:16at that and they said, "Wrong way,
- 42:19Peter. We're going back." All right.
- 42:22That's already more interesting than
- 42:24Dragon's Dogma. Okay. I'll say this.
- 42:27What I do appreciate about Pokemon
- 42:29Legends ZA is that it's a swing. I think
- 42:31it's like a major whiff, but I do
- 42:33appreciate that they took the swing. You
- 42:35know what I mean? I I can I can respect
- 42:37that it is a swing. I just think it is a
- 42:38terrible swing,
- 42:39>> you know.
- 42:40>> Um, yeah, it's a game that asks you to
- 42:46look look closer, you know, and and I
- 42:49think think about
- 42:52what what what it what it entails. Well,
- 42:55you you play through Pokemon Legends ZA
- 42:58and you're still wondering what does
- 43:00that mean
- 43:01>> to go from to go from new to old. But
- 43:04you know what's fun though about it is
- 43:05that the game also doesn't know what it
- 43:08means in that it throws like nine
- 43:10different things at the wall being like
- 43:11one of these you'll like right cuz
- 43:13there's like the guy named AZ right or
- 43:16and then there's like the organization
- 43:18called Zah or whatever. Okay so first
- 43:20off there's Zygarde the Pokemon but when
- 43:24you play Pokemon Legends ZA the starting
- 43:26rank of the
- 43:28>> Royale is Z.
- 43:30>> Yes. which is typically the end point of
- 43:33the alphabet and
- 43:35>> traditionally yes
- 43:36>> that's like listen dude
- 43:39>> a who's one of the most important
- 43:41characters associated with the game AZ
- 43:44that's the name of the [ __ ] game with
- 43:46the hyphen removed turned around AZ it's
- 43:50turned around
- 43:51Z which is your base in the game AZ Za
- 43:56look at this the title is doing
- 43:57cartwheels right before your eyes it is
- 43:59a city that you are locked in and you're
- 44:00you're lost You're going through the
- 44:02alleyways, the blocks. You're you're
- 44:03running in circles in this maze right
- 44:05now. AZ Za Aza. You're rearranging your
- 44:09[ __ ] brain right now.
- 44:11>> Here's one for you.
- 44:13Bloodborne.
- 44:18Here's what I'll say.
- 44:19>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:20>> Against my better judgment, I'm willing
- 44:22to say that this one is good.
- 44:24>> I think it is. I I think it's a little
- 44:26silly.
- 44:27>> Yeah.
- 44:27>> But I think it's good.
- 44:29>> Yeah.
- 44:29>> I don't know. I I can't really place my
- 44:31finger on what takes it out of being
- 44:33kind of goofy and into being like kind
- 44:35of cool,
- 44:36>> but I think it does. I think there's
- 44:38something about it
- 44:40>> cuz it's it's on the nose, right? I
- 44:41mean, because anyone would be like born
- 44:43in blood. You're carving your way
- 44:44through all these beasts. You're covered
- 44:46in blood. What happens in the whole
- 44:47game? You're covered in blood all the
- 44:48time. Like, I get it, right? But there's
- 44:50something about it that I think does
- 44:52work. I think
- 44:58I think that they I think a lot of it is
- 45:00that they got there first.
- 45:03>> Uh what do you mean? I think I agree
- 45:04with you, but what do you mean?
- 45:05>> I think they got there first. I think
- 45:06like like Bloodborne
- 45:09is is like
- 45:13I think Bloodborne makes retroactively
- 45:15makes like Dusk Bloods not as good of a
- 45:18title because Bloodborne got there
- 45:20first.
- 45:21>> Yes. Yes. Completely agree. I also think
- 45:23like if this game had been called like
- 45:25Bloodborne colon ritual of the night
- 45:28bad,
- 45:29>> right? But the fact that it's just
- 45:31Bloodborne. Um I also think something
- 45:33that helps it as well is that it is not
- 45:35embarrassing to say.
- 45:36>> Have you played Bloodborne?
- 45:37>> Yes, I have. And it's good.
- 45:39>> Have you played
- 45:40>> Metaphor Reefantasio? Please get away
- 45:43from me, sir. Right.
- 45:44>> Right.
- 45:45>> Um I think I I think it's cool. And I
- 45:49also I think it gets across like it's
- 45:51kind of gothic. It's kind of spooky.
- 45:53Kind of vampiry.
- 45:54>> Yeah, it is. And I'm sure there's some,
- 45:57you know, extended meaning.
- 45:59>> Oh, there. Oh. Oh, Jake. How much time?
- 46:02>> No, I don't need to. I don't need to
- 46:03know. You don't have to.
- 46:04>> Well, I mean, we could, you know, let's
- 46:05talk about the school of Bergenworth.
- 46:06Um,
- 46:07>> Burgerworth.
- 46:08>> Bergenworth. Yes.
- 46:11School of Bergenworth.
- 46:12>> Are they making burgers?
- 46:14>> I wish. No, they're doing
- 46:16>> What are they doing?
- 46:17>> The school of Bergenworth.
- 46:19>> Yeah. So they were doing
- 46:22>> Oh no.
- 46:22>> research into uh uh enlightenment.
- 46:26>> Uhhuh.
- 46:27>> And there was a split between now it's
- 46:30been a minute since I since I have
- 46:32thought of these characters. There's a
- 46:33split between two guys.
- 46:35>> And one guy
- 46:37>> uh thought that the path to
- 46:39enlightenment would be could be reached
- 46:42um by injecting the old blood into
- 46:45yourself. Um and he split off and and
- 46:49began the church of um church of healing
- 46:52I believe. Oh, misremembering maybe. And
- 46:55then um father uh
- 46:58he's got a bunch of eyes. He
- 47:02he he doesn't believe in all that. I'd
- 47:04have to I'd have to really, you know,
- 47:06brush up, I guess. But
- 47:07>> okay,
- 47:08>> that's what happens before Bloodborne
- 47:09starts and then you show up and you're
- 47:10like, "What the fuck?" Father Amelia,
- 47:13no. Father,
- 47:16someone's mad at me. Someone's screaming
- 47:17at me.
- 47:18>> Danganrompa trigger happy havoc.
- 47:21>> It's good. It's good.
- 47:23>> Sorry. Obviously.
- 47:25>> Yeah.
- 47:25>> Danganrompa trigger trigger happy havoc
- 47:28is good.
- 47:29>> And here's why.
- 47:30>> Yeah.
- 47:31>> I don't even know what danganrampa
- 47:32means. I I'll tell you what. I don't
- 47:34know how to spell it.
- 47:36>> If I had to look it up, if I had to I
- 47:37mean D an
- 47:40>> I actually do know what it means.
- 47:42>> Oh. Does it mean something? I thought it
- 47:44was like kind of like anamanopia.
- 47:46>> It means truth bullet.
- 47:48>> Good. Okay.
- 47:49>> Yes.
- 47:50>> Is does that mean like is that in
- 47:52Japanese? Danganrampa or is it like
- 47:53>> I believe so.
- 47:54>> Got it. Okay.
- 47:56>> Yeah. I'm I'm very down with Dang and
- 47:57Rompa: Trigger Happy Havoc.
- 48:00>> I think the title understands that if
- 48:03you are part of the Danganrompa
- 48:05franchise, you should never behave as if
- 48:09you have any sort of dignity.
- 48:11>> Yes. Yes. No, it's it's 100%. It's like
- 48:13if you if you can't get past this as the
- 48:16title.
- 48:16>> Yes. Don't play it.
- 48:18>> They're warning you. They're warning
- 48:19you. They're like, "Look at this stupid
- 48:20shit."
- 48:21>> They're like, "Yes,
- 48:22>> this is what you're getting."
- 48:24>> Yes. And And like that's You know what I
- 48:26like about it is that like I played I've
- 48:28only played the first one and I was
- 48:30going to play the second one and then
- 48:31they announced that like remake sequel
- 48:34thing that I thought was coming out this
- 48:36year and it didn't. Whatever. That's
- 48:37fine. Um,
- 48:39but
- 48:42there is something to
- 48:44playing this game and knowing exactly
- 48:46that it's never going to be any deeper
- 48:48or like it's like exactly as trashy as
- 48:50it is and you know it. You know that
- 48:52like right from the get.
- 48:53>> Um,
- 48:55>> I
- 48:57really like that game. Are the is two
- 48:59and are two and three good?
- 49:02>> Oh yeah, I like them. People People get
- 49:04weird, but there's there's like the two
- 49:07remake coming out, too. That's that's
- 49:08like also four, which I'm excited for.
- 49:11>> Yeah.
- 49:11>> But no. Yeah, they're fun. They're just
- 49:13like you just can't take them that
- 49:14seriously. Like it's just
- 49:16>> right.
- 49:16>> You just want to get entertained from
- 49:18beginning to end.
- 49:19>> Yes.
- 49:20>> It's like just straight up like a like a
- 49:22daytime soap opera in my opinion.
- 49:24>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No,
- 49:25>> it's fun. It's good.
- 49:26>> Oh, that's perfect. Yeah.
- 49:28>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:29>> How about this one? Last one I got.
- 49:31>> Okay.
- 49:33blueprints.
- 49:39That's a 10 out of 10.
- 49:41I think it's really bad.
- 49:43>> Wow. Really? I think it's really bad.
- 49:46>> Wow.
- 49:46>> Um and it might just be because
- 49:50how many people were like, "Wait, did
- 49:53you notice that blue prints?"
- 49:57I mean now I just it kind of s I mean
- 50:01like to me it just for from my
- 50:03perspective it sounds like uh blueprints
- 50:07of a house as you build the house and I
- 50:10and maybe that's maybe that's the
- 50:11association I can't shake off and
- 50:14>> I think that's fair but I like for that
- 50:16but
- 50:17>> you like it for that
- 50:18>> I like it for that the title itself
- 50:21>> is a blueprint incorrectly assembled
- 50:31That's the game.
- 50:31>> That actually worked on me a little bit.
- 50:33That actually you saying it like that
- 50:35specifically cuz by people just saying
- 50:37like Well, it kind of sounds like the
- 50:38word blueprints.
- 50:40>> Mhm.
- 50:40>> Makes me go like, "Okay, that's
- 50:41nothing." But what you just actually
- 50:43said actually does
- 50:45>> mean something. Is is blueprints. Is
- 50:48that something in the game?
- 50:50>> Yes,
- 50:51>> it is. Okay.
- 50:52>> Because
- 50:52>> because I remember the red something was
- 50:55happening in that game. But then
- 50:56>> so a big a big like thematic thing in
- 50:58the game is that it's trying to talk
- 51:00about inheritance. So So a blue prince
- 51:04like not a king like a prince inherits
- 51:06the throne. So it like works on all
- 51:08these different levels.
- 51:09>> Yeah. Okay.
- 51:10>> Mhm. Should I revisit that game? I
- 51:12didn't like it or like I had like really
- 51:14mixed feelings about it, but I wonder if
- 51:16like now Yeah.
- 51:17>> Blueprints was a game that you were
- 51:19destined to revisit at some point and
- 51:21like So
- 51:22>> you did you did say that to me and it
- 51:23might be now.
- 51:24>> Uhhuh.
- 51:24>> Cuz can I be so honest with you actually
- 51:26you saying
- 51:27>> well it's Blueprints but it's you know
- 51:30organized wrong or whatever. I was like
- 51:31wait a second that's something. Do
- 51:34>> people ever figure that game out? Cuz
- 51:35wasn't there like when it came out I
- 51:37remember everyone being like yo like
- 51:39there's like an ending to this but it's
- 51:40like there's like four different endings
- 51:43like way way deep. Did anyone ever like
- 51:44get to the whole end of it? You know
- 51:47what I mean? Oh yeah. I'm sure it's out
- 51:48there somewhere but it's not even who
- 51:50can even be concerned with the endings
- 51:52with such a with an experience as
- 51:54indelible as as what Blueprints
- 51:57provides. So,
- 51:59>> yeah. I think it's a game that resists
- 52:01the um like getting getting too much
- 52:04value out of an ending to be honest.
- 52:06>> Oh, it made me feel stupid when I got
- 52:08the ending cuz I spent cuz I knew what I
- 52:10had to do
- 52:11>> and I was like trying to just like rush
- 52:12to get to the end,
- 52:13>> right?
- 52:14>> And it took me way longer than I than I
- 52:16wanted it to
- 52:17>> and then all that happened was I got to
- 52:20the room, he went inside and the credits
- 52:22rolled and I was like, "Wait, why did I
- 52:24even It's exactly what you're saying.
- 52:27I got nothing out of that.
- 52:28>> No. Yeah. Nothing out of that. Yeah.
- 52:30>> You got to go find the answers. They're
- 52:31out there. But it's like you you think
- 52:33you got
- 52:34>> blueprints, but you're actually looking
- 52:36for, you know, it doesn't it doesn't
- 52:37matter.
- 52:38>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:39>> You got one more.
- 52:41>> Sure. I can hit you with one more. Let's
- 52:43see.
- 52:45I have a few here. I just want you to
- 52:47know that I also put Pokemon Black and
- 52:49White as bad, but I guess we covered
- 52:50that already.
- 52:51>> Yeah, they're not good.
- 52:52>> Um I Okay.
- 52:55Kingdom Hearts 358 over two days.
- 52:58>> It's not good.
- 52:59>> It's really not good. No, it's not good.
- 53:01It's good.
- 53:01>> Here's the thing I will give you. I
- 53:03think Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance
- 53:05is really good.
- 53:06>> Yeah.
- 53:07>> Okay. Here here's what here's what
- 53:08happens in 358 over two days. You have
- 53:10this character Roxis. He wakes up.
- 53:12>> He doesn't really know who he is.
- 53:14>> He doesn't know what his relationship is
- 53:15to the people around him. He is He's got
- 53:17this weird relationship with his
- 53:18memories. And Square Enix, they say,
- 53:20"Hey, here you go. What if I gave you a
- 53:23title that is at first an illeible
- 53:27object and now you have to reconstruct
- 53:29it to meaning?
- 53:32>> Yeah, I think it's still illeible
- 53:34though.
- 53:35>> No, no, no. Cuz you go you get these
- 53:37days experienced through these different
- 53:39relationships and how you're dividing
- 53:42that time amongst people and it and it
- 53:45starts to mean something to you. I guess
- 53:48my problem is like if you told me to
- 53:51read this title out loud just looking at
- 53:52it.
- 53:53>> Uhhuh.
- 53:54>> I I would probably say multiple things
- 53:57before I said 300
- 54:0030 uh
- 54:02wait how do you say it?
- 54:05>> 358 over two days.
- 54:07>> Okay. So Wikipedia says that it's uh the
- 54:09subtitle is read 358 days over two.
- 54:13>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's that's also
- 54:14acceptable.
- 54:16That's crazy.
- 54:17>> That's accept That's acceptable. Yeah,
- 54:18that's that's extremely
- 54:20>> that's acceptable.
- 54:20>> That's acceptable. Yes. If you only
- 54:22knew. I I suppose if I only knew cuz I
- 54:25would read this. I would probably say
- 54:26Kingdom Hearts 358 divided by two days.
- 54:30>> No. No. You 358 slash two days.
- 54:34>> Like I understand fractions. I
- 54:36understand division I suppose. But
- 54:38>> no, here's the thing. This game could
- 54:40have eight days over two. You could have
- 54:43called this game Kingdom Hearts colon
- 54:45Roxis if you were a [ __ ] coward. But
- 54:47instead they were like, "No, this is
- 54:50like a this is a this is a puzzle meant
- 54:52for you to unsolve." They they they they
- 54:54handed you a Rubik's cube all mixed up
- 54:55and they said, "Can you will 3, five,
- 54:58and eight make sense to you?" Well,
- 55:01over the two days.
- 55:02>> Wait. Yeah. What do the numbers mean?
- 55:04What do the numbers mean?
- 55:05>> 358.
- 55:06>> Yeah. I thought it in my mind I always
- 55:09read as uh 364 like like it was a year.
- 55:13It's not.
- 55:14>> No.
- 55:15>> It's like,
- 55:16>> yeah,
- 55:19>> I'm going to be so honest. I just don't
- 55:20think I can ever play this game.
- 55:22>> No, no, no, no. You can never
- 55:25I don't think I have it.
- 55:26>> There's a new collection available on
- 55:27Switch 2 now.
- 55:28>> Oh, I know why you like this game. It's
- 55:30cuz these the studio that made it also
- 55:32made The World Ends With You,
- 55:35>> I guess. So, but they they also made
- 55:38Chocoo's Crystal Tower, you know.
- 55:43and uh
- 55:46Disney magical world too.
- 55:48>> Just think about this. You've got this
- 55:50character who exists for literally 358
- 55:54days. That's
- 55:55>> Wait, why that many days?
- 55:56>> It's that's he he comes into existence
- 56:00in between Kingdom Hearts 1 and two.
- 56:04>> Okay. And so it's just like
- 56:07Yeah. It's the time between those games.
- 56:09Got it. So the whole game is structured
- 56:12by days. So it's like, oh, you wake up,
- 56:14it's day seven, day 20, whatever. And
- 56:17then the over two is it's this idea that
- 56:20over those 358 days, they're actually
- 56:22shared between two people. So
- 56:27there are these two characters whose
- 56:29their existences are kind of like
- 56:30entangled in a way that makes it hard
- 56:33for them to exist independently. So,
- 56:35it's not just 358 days. It's 358 days,
- 56:39two people.
- 56:44>> Do you know that the original one of the
- 56:45titles they worked on for the movie
- 56:47Spider-Man 2 was Spider-Man two lives?
- 56:52Kind of a similar thing.
- 56:53>> That's not right.
- 56:54>> That's It's not right, but it is true.
- 56:59>> Jay, can I tell you about the uh the
- 57:00critical eration?
- 57:01>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But but can I spoil
- 57:02358 over two days? I'm going to play it.
- 57:05No. Yeah, but
- 57:06>> can I All right. All right. So, on the
- 57:07cover of that game, there's these three
- 57:09characters and you see these three
- 57:10characters hanging out all the time and
- 57:12>> let me see.
- 57:13>> And and it's like once once you
- 57:16understand Are you looking at it?
- 57:17>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:18>> Okay. Okay. You see them?
- 57:20>> Yeah.
- 57:20>> What do they What do they look like to
- 57:21you?
- 57:22>> Well, okay. So, you got whom I
- 57:25understand is Roxus.
- 57:27>> Yeah, that's right.
- 57:27>> Kind of a little boy, a little lad with
- 57:29with yellow hair.
- 57:30>> Mhm.
- 57:31>> Keyblade. There's a There's a fellow
- 57:33with spiky red hair.
- 57:34>> That's right.
- 57:35>> There's someone in the back. White hair.
- 57:37>> Yep.
- 57:38>> Face obscured.
- 57:39>> There's like a What is this? It's like a
- 57:43like a big mouse wearing a hoodie.
- 57:45>> Yeah, that's Yeah, that's that's um
- 57:46Mikey.
- 57:48>> Mikey.
- 57:50>> Mhm.
- 57:50>> So So I guess there's Michael down here.
- 57:52>> Yep. Yep.
- 57:53>> And then um there's there's a gal sort
- 57:56of sitting on a on a right
- 57:58>> palm tree.
- 58:00Mhm. Okay.
- 58:01>> So, you got these three friends the
- 58:03whole game and they're all hanging out.
- 58:04>> Wait, there's there's five or four.
- 58:06>> Yeah.
- 58:06>> You know, the two on the side, don't
- 58:07worry about them. They're they're
- 58:08somewhere else. So, so the whole game
- 58:10you're you're going up on this uh this
- 58:12clock tower in the back and you're
- 58:14sitting up there with your buddies.
- 58:15>> Yeah. Yeah. And it's the three of you
- 58:18>> and but the game is is over two for the
- 58:22two people.
- 58:25And I think I think that's the title of
- 58:27the game telling you
- 58:29someone's not going to make it.
- 58:31>> What?
- 58:33>> What do you mean someone's not going to
- 58:34make it?
- 58:35>> Someone's not going to make it cuz it's
- 58:36cuz it's about the experiences of two
- 58:38people.
- 58:41>> So somebody in that group of three isn't
- 58:43going to make it.
- 58:44>> Oh,
- 58:46I guess I see what you mean. I I guess I
- 58:48understand what you mean.
- 58:49>> All right. Just tell me about the
- 58:50critical error nation.
- 58:53>> I'm sorry. And how does this this fellow
- 58:54Michael play into it?
- 58:57>> Michael, he's doing stuff in the
- 58:58background.
- 58:59>> Okay, got it. Got it. Got it. Uh, so
- 59:00here's let me let me tell you about the

- 1:02:21right. That's good. Okay. Yeah. As we do
- 1:02:23every week, we um we end the show with a
- 1:02:25pre-written piece. Um Peter, here's what
- 1:02:28I've got. Here's what I've got for you.
- 1:02:30>> Yes, please. I have
- 1:02:33uh I I was uh fooling around with micro
- 1:02:37fiction. So,
- 1:02:39>> incredibly incredibly short little
- 1:02:41pieces. And I've got a subject that I
- 1:02:45was writing about. And these pieces are
- 1:02:48each two sentences long, but it's like
- 1:02:50the same subject. So, I was kind of just
- 1:02:52circling this idea. So, almost as a
- 1:02:55demonstration of the creative process, I
- 1:02:57want to I want to show you I want to
- 1:02:59share with you and the listener my two
- 1:03:01sentence formulations that are almost
- 1:03:03like me doing different drafts of the
- 1:03:05same idea.
- 1:03:06>> Sure.
- 1:03:06>> Okay, this is cool.
- 1:03:07>> Great. Yeah. Okay, great. Um, okay. Here
- 1:03:10we go.
- 1:03:15Stay late at work, my forgetful love.
- 1:03:18I've been sleeping diagonally,
- 1:03:20but even the whole bed gets lonely.
- 1:03:25Okay, same idea.
- 1:03:29Come back soon. I've been using your
- 1:03:31good pillow, and I'm beginning to
- 1:03:34understand why you're always stealing
- 1:03:35mine.
- 1:03:37All right, here we go.
- 1:03:40>> Without you, I eat directly from the
- 1:03:42container, standing in the blue
- 1:03:44refrigerator light. I called this
- 1:03:47freedom for three nights.
- 1:03:51>> Last one.
- 1:03:55My love, I have become lawless in your
- 1:03:57absence. My shoes are upstairs. There
- 1:03:59are crumbs in the bed, wet towels
- 1:04:02wherever they fall.
- 1:04:04You would be amazed at how quickly I
- 1:04:07have established anarchy in our home.
- 1:04:12There it is, Jake. That's it.
- 1:04:16This is the closest thing I've ever
- 1:04:17heard to you writing a song.
- 1:04:21And I really liked that.
- 1:04:22>> Wow.
- 1:04:23>> I really liked that.
- 1:04:24>> Um,
- 1:04:25>> wow. I really really liked that because
- 1:04:27for me,
- 1:04:29>> I mean, what draws me to that is that is
- 1:04:32how I write music is it's two I I write
- 1:04:34a song two lines at a time.
- 1:04:36>> And um, usually like the how it starts
- 1:04:39for me is I'll be walking around and
- 1:04:40something will just pop in my head and
- 1:04:42I'll write it down and I have just this
- 1:04:43notes app that's just all of this stuff.
- 1:04:45But then as I think about it, I'll keep
- 1:04:46walking and usually I'll get like four
- 1:04:48or five of these like double line ideas
- 1:04:50at once because I'm just as you're sort
- 1:04:53of saying like this rehashing the same
- 1:04:55idea and think about like the different
- 1:04:56angles you could take with it. And I
- 1:04:58really really liked that. I thought that
- 1:05:00was very very uh
- 1:05:02poignant. I liked that a lot actually.
- 1:05:04Wow. I'm so curious now to hear your
- 1:05:12response to the critical error episode
- 1:05:16that I did with Christian Basillas. Did
- 1:05:17Reviews Make Us Dumb.
- 1:05:19>> I did a written piece on that that I
- 1:05:21described as this was me in songwriter
- 1:05:24voice in my
- 1:05:24>> Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Okay. Yes. So,
- 1:05:28I'm I'm curious about this. Yeah.
- 1:05:29>> Next week for the bonus episode, I will
- 1:05:31have listened to that and I will we'll
- 1:05:32talk about it on the bonus podcast.
- 1:05:34>> Okay. Cool.
- 1:05:34>> Critical Patreon.com
- 1:05:37>> cuz I even said to him in that podcast I
- 1:05:38was like, you know, this is a part of my
- 1:05:39brain that I don't typically activate
- 1:05:41where I was I almost think of myself as
- 1:05:42like I'm doing a piece of musical
- 1:05:44theater. That's like the voice in my
- 1:05:45head. Yeah.
- 1:05:46>> Well, something I really like as a
- 1:05:48writing exercise with songs is that like
- 1:05:52you know if you're writing an essay,
- 1:05:53you're writing some whatever like you
- 1:05:55could be as long as winded as you want,
- 1:05:57>> right? Like you don't have to fit within
- 1:05:59these specific like uh requirements of
- 1:06:02of sort of what you're doing. Whereas
- 1:06:04like in a song you have to be really
- 1:06:05specific about your language and you
- 1:06:06have to be like very intentional about
- 1:06:08like how many syllables and stuff you
- 1:06:09have and whatever. And so I think
- 1:06:11writing if you are a writer who's never
- 1:06:13written a song before. I don't even
- 1:06:14think you need to necessarily write a
- 1:06:16song per se, but like trying to maybe
- 1:06:18just like think about like poetry,
- 1:06:20right? And trying to find like a way to
- 1:06:21make something like that work I think is
- 1:06:23is an interesting sort of switch that
- 1:06:25you have to flip when you're like doing
- 1:06:27different things um between different
- 1:06:28types of writing. So I'm actually very
- 1:06:30excited to hear that. I will I'll give
- 1:06:32that a listen probably tonight actually.
- 1:06:33Wow. Okay. So, if you haven't listened
- 1:06:35already, make sure to go back. Uh, thank
- 1:06:37you for watching and or listening to the
- 1:06:39podcast. We'll see you next week. Bye.
