- 0:10Speaker 1: This is Kevin Sporter at Daily bringing you the Saturday
- 0:12Speaker 1: morning sports show right here on 105.9 Radio Folkestone. I'm
- 0:21Speaker 1: on my own today, I've got no AD. AD is
- 0:23Speaker 1: taking advantage of the fact that Folkestone and Victor don't
- 0:26Speaker 1: have a game so he's off to catch up with
- 0:28Speaker 1: some family. However, we do have a busy show as
- 0:37Speaker 1: we are joined by Catherine O'Connor and Paul Bartlett from
- 0:39Speaker 1: Folkestone Running and Athletics Club, who'll be chatting about the
- 0:42Speaker 1: club and about their recent visit to Berlin to run
- 0:46Speaker 1: the marathons. Now, if I get time, I'll squeeze in
- 0:52Speaker 1: some local sports, but I don't think there's much chance
- 0:54Speaker 1: of that today. But there's only one song to start
- 0:58Speaker 1: today's show, and it's got to be Berlin and Take
- 1:03Speaker 1: My Breath Away. That's a great track to start the show.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Two guests in have just been to Berlin and they
- 1:28Speaker 1: did something that took their breath away. They ran a marathon.
- 1:32Speaker 1: So that was 1986. There we go. right so i
- 1:36Speaker 1: want to welcome to the show um i want to
- 1:38Speaker 1: just say a big hello to katherine good morning katherine
- 1:41Speaker 1: how are you.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Good morning kevin good yeah yeah lovely to to be
- 1:45Speaker 2: here thank you for inviting us.
- 1:47Speaker 1: On thanks for coming in and to you paul uh
- 1:49Speaker 1: welcome come in let's have a let's have a chat
- 1:51Speaker 1: you've both just done the parkrun is that right.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah yeah we just got back from the parkrun it's
- 1:54Speaker 3: a bit of a rush but we got back just
- 1:56Speaker 3: i wonder.
- 1:56Speaker 1: What that funny smell was i've got some deodorant in
- 2:00Speaker 1: my bag actually please um OK, so no, it's great
- 2:03Speaker 1: to have you on because it's very apt, you know,
- 2:07Speaker 1: to get you straight back. You just got off the
- 2:09Speaker 1: plane basically during the week from Berlin. And before we
- 2:14Speaker 1: go on to Berlin and before we go on to
- 2:16Speaker 1: talk about the running club, let's just kind of turn
- 2:18Speaker 1: the clock back to you first, Catherine. I mean, let's
- 2:22Speaker 1: go back to the days when you were at school.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Did you like sport at school or did you like
- 2:25Speaker 1: have a fag around the bike shed? Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 2: No, I was a very good girl. Definitely not. I
- 2:30Speaker 2: actually loved sport at school. Didn't do it a massive amount.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I wasn't very keen on team sports, but I was
- 2:39Speaker 2: like in the netball team. But I did actually love
- 2:43Speaker 2: our cross-country running. And I was one of the ones
- 2:46Speaker 2: who liked it and didn't go for a fag round there,
- 2:48Speaker 2: can I say. Yeah, so I did like, I did
- 2:51Speaker 2: love running when I was at school.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Oh, that's great.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I mean, you're one of the very few people that
- 2:55Speaker 1: have actually come on here and said that they liked
- 2:58Speaker 1: running at school. And what about you, Paul? Did you
- 3:01Speaker 1: take up running at school or? Not really, no.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I think I was the opposite to Catherine. I was
- 3:05Speaker 3: probably the one behind in the woods, in the fag.
- 3:08Speaker 3: I hated cross country. I loved football. That was my
- 3:11Speaker 3: thing when I was younger. I hated running. Short distance
- 3:15Speaker 3: stuff's fine, but cross country.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I played football for a number of years and I
- 3:19Speaker 1: loved running. But if after a game on a Saturday,
- 3:22Speaker 1: I would say to my teammates, who've just been running
- 3:24Speaker 1: for 90 minutes, anybody fancy coming out for a run
- 3:27Speaker 1: on a Tuesday, clear off, you know, what do you
- 3:29Speaker 1: think we are? You know, but I used to love it.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I thought, well, why don't you, you know, you put
- 3:33Speaker 1: a ball in front of them and they run forever. Um,
- 3:36Speaker 1: so was there any, you say you played football, anything else?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Did you go swimming?
- 3:39Speaker 3: No, it was really just football. I love football. Um, uh,
- 3:43Speaker 3: when I was in sort of junior school, I was
- 3:45Speaker 3: the captain of the team and, uh, Yeah, I loved it.
- 3:48Speaker 3: When I went up to secondary school, the boys were
- 3:50Speaker 3: a lot bigger.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 3: And, yeah, it kind of put me off a little bit.
- 3:53Speaker 3: You were quite a slight lad. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Were you, were you, did you, were you brought up
- 3:58Speaker 1: around here?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Ashford, yeah. I grew up in Ashford. Yeah, yeah. I
- 4:01Speaker 3: went to the North School for Boys in Ashford.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:04Speaker 3: So, yeah, it was, yeah, running was never on my radar,
- 4:08Speaker 3: not at that age. I came to much later in life.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Did you? Yeah, yeah.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And, I mean, what sparked the first run then? Was
- 4:17Speaker 1: it just kind of think, oh, I've got to do
- 4:18Speaker 1: perhaps out of sport for a long time?
- 4:20Speaker 3: I'd done a bit. I'd done a bit. I'd done
- 4:22Speaker 3: the odd 10K. And I loved watching the London Marathon
- 4:26Speaker 3: on the telly. It was always, the coverage was always fantastic.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And I've always thought, I'd love to run that one day.
- 4:33Speaker 3: And then, sadly, my father passed away. And I thought,
- 4:36Speaker 3: this is a great opportunity to do it. Raise some
- 4:38Speaker 3: money for charity and go and run the London Marathon.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I did it for the great, uh, the British heart foundation. And,
- 4:45Speaker 3: and that's why I joined folks from running club.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Really?
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah. That's a good, well, I'll say a nice story,
- 4:50Speaker 1: a pleasant story with great memories.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:52Speaker 1: So you got into the, to the marathon straight away. Yeah. Okay. Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 3: No, I worked for the charity. I had to raise
- 4:59Speaker 3: 2000 pounds for the British heart foundation. Um, And, yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 3: I got a place, and so I was like, well,
- 5:08Speaker 3: I've got to join a club, really. I need some
- 5:10Speaker 3: guidance and some help.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Okay, so at that time, you were totally on your own,
- 5:12Speaker 1: just looking at magazines, perhaps, and stuff like that.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd done, like, Jivadan 10K. I'd just done one
- 5:18Speaker 3: or two 10Ks, but that was it, you know. The
- 5:20Speaker 3: marathon was a whole different ballgame, and I needed some advice. So, hence,
- 5:24Speaker 3: I joined the running club.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Okay. Now, Catherine, you've actually gone runner to becoming a coach,
- 5:31Speaker 1: haven't you?
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 5:32Speaker 1: So, I mean, do you get people that... I mean,
- 5:35Speaker 1: we had a chap in during the week. He wanted
- 5:38Speaker 1: to get into the London. He didn't. And then he
- 5:42Speaker 1: got an email to say, we've got 500 spaces for
- 5:44Speaker 1: the Brighton Marathon. And he applied and said yes. And
- 5:49Speaker 1: then he said within about a minute, he got a... Yes,
- 5:51Speaker 1: you've been accepted. Yes. So he'd never run in his life.
- 5:55Speaker 1: So do you get people like that come to you? Say,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I've got a place for a marathon. What am I
- 5:59Speaker 1: going to do?
- 6:00Speaker 2: We get a big influx at the club. Literally the
- 6:05Speaker 2: day of the marathon, I will get emails coming through
- 6:09Speaker 2: where maybe people have watched it and been inspired. And
- 6:12Speaker 2: lots of people put their name in the ballot year
- 6:16Speaker 2: after year after year. They're not runners. They do it
- 6:19Speaker 2: maybe just because it's a thing to do or. you know,
- 6:22Speaker 2: a night out with some friends and then they get
- 6:24Speaker 2: a place.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I know.
- 6:26Speaker 2: And then they say, yeah.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I mean, we've had runners from folks in running clubs
- 6:29Speaker 1: set where you are, tried for, I think Louisa E
- 6:32Speaker 1: tried for 18 years. Yes, 18 years.
- 6:34Speaker 2: She tried for, yeah.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So, yes, so we do, do get a lot of
- 6:39Speaker 2: people like that.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely. I mean, that is, uh, That is a
- 6:44Speaker 1: challenge to you as well, I suppose, isn't it? Because
- 6:46Speaker 1: if someone's got a core strength of running, then at
- 6:49Speaker 1: least you can set them off if they've done 10Ks
- 6:51Speaker 1: and stuff like that.
- 6:52Speaker 2: But if they're starting from absolute scratch, you know, you
- 6:56Speaker 2: need maybe that whole year. You do need that year
- 6:58Speaker 2: to build your running up. And it depends on their expectations.
- 7:02Speaker 2: You know, they may be just happy just to run
- 7:04Speaker 2: it and not worry how long it takes. They may
- 7:08Speaker 2: want to run, walk, you know, jeffing. Um, other people
- 7:11Speaker 2: are hell bent on a time and they want to
- 7:14Speaker 2: really hit a goal, whether that will be four hours,
- 7:17Speaker 2: five hours, six hours. Um, yeah. So they need to
- 7:20Speaker 2: put the training in place.
- 7:21Speaker 1: But from your experience, if you get people like that
- 7:23Speaker 1: and they do it, um, what, what's the percentage, if
- 7:27Speaker 1: you like the carry on running? Because some of them
- 7:29Speaker 1: just say, I've done my marathon thing.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I would say most people probably carry on. You know, yeah, yeah.
- 7:36Speaker 2: In some way, shape or form, whether they just do
- 7:38Speaker 2: park run. Especially if they've come and joined the club,
- 7:42Speaker 2: they started building friendships. And that's the whole point of
- 7:45Speaker 2: a club. It's a community. It's friendships. And that's what
- 7:48Speaker 2: happened with me. So I very much same story as Paul.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I ran my first marathon in 2007. And I ran
- 7:57Speaker 2: it for charity. My daughter's type one diabetic and I
- 8:00Speaker 2: ran it for Diabetes UK. I did a lot of
- 8:03Speaker 2: charity walks. I did loads, loads of stuff for them.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And in their magazine, they were like, we've got places
- 8:09Speaker 2: for London Marathon. I just thought, I'll do it. I
- 8:12Speaker 2: hadn't run for many years. So in between my school,
- 8:15Speaker 2: I hadn't run. Yeah, put that into your mind. I
- 8:18Speaker 2: hadn't done lots of lots of running, not at all.
- 8:22Speaker 2: And it was a friend of mine when I got
- 8:24Speaker 2: the place, she said, you know, why don't you join
- 8:26Speaker 2: a running club? I didn't join Folkestone Running Club just
- 8:30Speaker 2: to sort of get some ideas and tips. And that
- 8:32Speaker 2: was 20 years ago, Kev. And I never I never
- 8:36Speaker 2: stopped because I made friends. By the time I run
- 8:38Speaker 2: the marathon, the people I trained with and the people
- 8:41Speaker 2: I knew were good friends. And I loved by that
- 8:44Speaker 2: time I was hooked.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, that's a great thing about joining a club.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I mean, it is a bit daunting. I remember when
- 8:50Speaker 1: I was at the club, back in the days, it
- 8:52Speaker 1: was the old cricket club. And I was a sort of,
- 8:55Speaker 1: because I wasn't a particularly good runner, I used to
- 8:58Speaker 1: look around to see if there was any new faces.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And if anyone's looking a bit lost, I'd jump on
- 9:03Speaker 1: them and say, is this your first time? Yeah, come
- 9:05Speaker 1: with me. I thought, I'll get a night off training.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And I'd just jog around the park with someone that's
- 9:11Speaker 1: a 15-minute miler. So, Paul, how many marathons have you
- 9:14Speaker 1: done now?
- 9:15Speaker 3: That was my 13th. Berlin was my 13th.
- 9:18Speaker 1: 13th. And you, Catherine?
- 9:20Speaker 2: Berlin was my 16th. 16th.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yes.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Oh, well.
- 9:23Speaker 2: So I'd say across 20 years now. Next year will
- 9:26Speaker 2: be my 20th year, sort of, when I ran my
- 9:29Speaker 2: first one.
- 9:29Speaker 1: But you've done... How many have you done this year, though? Three.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Three, yes.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's my third one.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I can remember talking to you on the coach when
- 9:36Speaker 1: we went up to London, and you'd just done Manchester
- 9:39Speaker 1: the week before.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I had.
- 9:40Speaker 1: And I remember you saying... What did you say? She said,
- 9:44Speaker 1: if I had a student, I'll tell them not to
- 9:45Speaker 1: run two marathons of consecutive weekends.
- 9:47Speaker 3: I would, I would.
- 9:49Speaker 2: But there I was and I got round and actually
- 9:53Speaker 2: had a really, really great run at London. I always do.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I love London. So it was really good.
- 9:58Speaker 1: OK, well, let's have a little bit of music. break now.
- 10:01Speaker 1: So this one actually is I've got a couple of
- 10:04Speaker 1: birthday songs today for really good musicians, if you like.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And the first one, the gentleman was 81 during the week.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And this song, it was a top 10 here. It
- 10:14Speaker 1: got to number two. in 1971, and it's an absolutely
- 10:18Speaker 1: iconic summer quirky sound. Sit back and listen to American
- 10:23Speaker 1: Pie by Don McLean.
- 10:39Speaker 2: That I could make those people dance and maybe they'd
- 10:43Speaker 2: be happy. This will be the day that I die.
- 10:47Speaker 2: This will be the day that I die.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I absolutely love that track. I remember that. I do
- 10:57Speaker 1: remember it. I own up a 1971 Dawn McLean American Pie.
- 11:02Speaker 1: It took UK by storm, actually. It got such a
- 11:04Speaker 1: nice voice. And it was just like such a breezy
- 11:07Speaker 1: summer song. Okay, so we're back in the studio. We're
- 11:10Speaker 1: joined by Catherine and Paul. We're talking running. And so, right,
- 11:16Speaker 1: so marathons. Let's have a little chat about Berlin. Now, Catherine,
- 11:20Speaker 1: let's come to you first. So why Berlin?
- 11:25Speaker 2: Well, it's one of the majors.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Yes.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And it's very hard to get into.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 2: And it has quite a, it's got a hard qualifying time.
- 11:35Speaker 2: So many non-runners out there, obviously, I don't want to
- 11:38Speaker 2: bore you with jargon, but we can get into the
- 11:42Speaker 2: major marathons by running a good for age time. So
- 11:46Speaker 2: that's based on your age and a qualifying time. And
- 11:51Speaker 2: it's very harsh for Berlin. And I managed to qualify.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Basically, that was it. Once I got within that time,
- 12:01Speaker 2: the first thing I said was, I'm entering Berlin and
- 12:04Speaker 2: seeing if I can get a place. So I was
- 12:06Speaker 2: really fortunate to get a good for age time.
- 12:09Speaker 1: So good for age. You have to do a marathon
- 12:11Speaker 1: with a recorded time and then... Send that time off
- 12:14Speaker 1: to Berlin. Yes. And say, I want to apply for
- 12:17Speaker 1: Good for Age for Berlin. Right. Yes.
- 12:19Speaker 2: So all the majors are the same, like London's the same.
- 12:21Speaker 2: They're all the same. So yes, so I had to,
- 12:23Speaker 2: you have to submit an official time that you've run
- 12:26Speaker 2: and it has to be inside their qualifying time. Yep.
- 12:31Speaker 2: And once I qualified, that was, say, one of the
- 12:33Speaker 2: first things I did.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Right. So you signed up, booked up, and you managed
- 12:38Speaker 1: to get hotels. So Paul, was you down to do
- 12:41Speaker 1: the Berlin thing? No.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Well, because Catherine got her place, we'd had the hotel booked,
- 12:47Speaker 3: the flights booked and everything. And so I was going
- 12:49Speaker 3: to be there anyway. So I really wanted to run Berlin.
- 12:52Speaker 3: It's an iconic marathon. It's where... till this year, the
- 12:58Speaker 3: world record had been held, uh, for many years. It's
- 13:00Speaker 3: fast and flat. Um, and I thought I'm going to
- 13:04Speaker 3: be there. I really want to run it. So as
- 13:06Speaker 3: you know, being the quiz master, you are, uh, you,
- 13:09Speaker 3: I got a charity place for whiz kids and, uh,
- 13:13Speaker 3: I held a charity night, which you hosted, uh, brilliantly. Um,
- 13:17Speaker 3: I managed to raise, uh, an amazing amount of money,
- 13:20Speaker 3: just under 2000 pounds in the end, uh, to, to
- 13:23Speaker 3: get a place to, to join Catherine, uh, on the run.
- 13:26Speaker 3: So I was, yeah, That's over the moon.
- 13:28Speaker 1: To be honest. Yeah. I mean, first of all, that
- 13:29Speaker 1: quiz night was a night to remember. As they are,
- 13:32Speaker 1: the quizzes are really powerful. You know, they're a great tool.
- 13:35Speaker 1: They're a great fun night. People can have a great
- 13:37Speaker 1: time and you can raise money for a good cause. So,
- 13:42Speaker 1: so right. So you're, on the same plane, in the
- 13:45Speaker 1: same hotel, but did you start at the same points, Catherine?
- 13:49Speaker 2: No, no, we didn't. So Paul is a faster runner
- 13:53Speaker 2: than me. He does, he'll be, he'll be, he'll want
- 13:57Speaker 2: to say, I hope, but he's a sub three marathon runner.
- 14:00Speaker 2: So I was looking for around the three sort of 20, 25.
- 14:05Speaker 2: So we were in different start points. So we, headed
- 14:09Speaker 2: off together, but we were at different bag drops and everything.
- 14:12Speaker 2: So we had to say our goodbyes. So we had
- 14:15Speaker 2: to say our goodbyes.
- 14:15Speaker 1: But that was tough, actually, after all that you've been through.
- 14:18Speaker 2: It was quite emotional. I did have a few tears
- 14:21Speaker 2: and Paul did sort of just say, why are you crying?
- 14:23Speaker 2: And it's very, very emotional. And it's just the whole
- 14:27Speaker 2: build up, all the training. It's a major, it's a
- 14:30Speaker 2: big marathon. So Paul went off his way. I went
- 14:33Speaker 2: off my way. You speak to people. You do speak
- 14:36Speaker 2: to some wonderful, wonderful people along the way. But you're
- 14:39Speaker 2: standing in the pen on your own with thousands of
- 14:43Speaker 2: people around you.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's funny how you can be lonely in a crowd,
- 14:45Speaker 1: isn't it? It is.
- 14:46Speaker 4: It is.
- 14:47Speaker 2: And then that's it. And we didn't see each other
- 14:49Speaker 2: because obviously I didn't see Paul on the run. But
- 14:52Speaker 2: we he waited for me.
- 14:55Speaker 1: But there was another female Folkestone runner there, wasn't there?
- 14:59Speaker 1: Tell us about that.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so Nikki Goodwin, phenomenal runner. She has been a
- 15:04Speaker 2: member of Folkestone Running Club. I don't think she can
- 15:08Speaker 2: even remember when I asked her, but she was a junior.
- 15:11Speaker 2: She's been running for many, many years. And I remember
- 15:13Speaker 2: her when I started running at the club. And she
- 15:17Speaker 2: managed to get a personal best time at Berlin, and
- 15:20Speaker 2: she did 3.22. And I did see her on the run.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Oh, did you?
- 15:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, that is amazing, isn't it?
- 15:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I did. Because even though we started in the
- 15:27Speaker 2: same pen, because there's thousands of people, we didn't actually...
- 15:31Speaker 2: We weren't together, because we didn't get there together sort
- 15:33Speaker 2: of thing.
- 15:34Speaker 4: So.
- 15:35Speaker 2: We didn't actually see each other. And it was in
- 15:37Speaker 2: the back mile, 21, 22, which was lovely. We did
- 15:40Speaker 2: that little, you know, little way. She sort of just
- 15:43Speaker 2: grabbed my hand just for a second because that's what,
- 15:45Speaker 2: you know, runners do. And off she went and she
- 15:48Speaker 2: got a phenomenal time. So she had a great run.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Great. And Paul, how was your run? You said goodbye
- 15:53Speaker 1: to Catherine. So did you bump into anybody or did
- 15:55Speaker 1: you recognise any sort of English club vests at all,
- 15:58Speaker 1: anything like that?
- 15:59Speaker 3: No, I didn't actually. I mean, Berlin, being a major city,
- 16:02Speaker 3: you get a huge amount of international runners from all
- 16:04Speaker 3: over the world, America and Asia. And that's a part
- 16:10Speaker 3: of the appeal. It's phenomenal. But no, it's the same
- 16:14Speaker 3: as Catherine's. I stood in the pen on my own.
- 16:16Speaker 3: But I quite like that. I quite like to sort
- 16:17Speaker 3: of get calm, get in the zone and just take
- 16:20Speaker 3: it all in. And it's a time, it's the sort
- 16:23Speaker 3: of calm before the storms. You're just breathing and just relaxing.
- 16:27Speaker 3: you know you know as a countdown i mean and
- 16:28Speaker 3: you get to the pen quite early so you know
- 16:30Speaker 3: you you could be standing in the pen for about
- 16:32Speaker 3: three quarters an hour waiting uh for the actual start
- 16:35Speaker 3: so uh there's a lot of nerves you know you
- 16:37Speaker 3: can tell is this there's a certain sort of atmosphere.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Everyone's very tense also all going through the same as
- 16:43Speaker 1: what you're going through yeah that's great whether they're good
- 16:45Speaker 1: or bad runners or it's not fair to say bad
- 16:47Speaker 1: runners if they're fast or slow runners and still get
- 16:51Speaker 1: the same nerves and and uh apprehension at that start
- 16:55Speaker 1: line um And once you got going, was it slower
- 17:03Speaker 1: than your normal pace? Did the crowds kind of box
- 17:05Speaker 1: you in?
- 17:06Speaker 3: It actually was fine. It was good. I mean, London,
- 17:09Speaker 3: which I did earlier this year, was busier. It felt
- 17:13Speaker 3: there was more people. With Berlin, it felt I had
- 17:16Speaker 3: a little bit more space around me, which is great.
- 17:18Speaker 3: And the crowds, I mean, London is special. I mean,
- 17:21Speaker 3: the crowds in London are amazing. But in Berlin, it
- 17:25Speaker 3: was a little quieter, but that suited me a little bit.
- 17:27Speaker 3: I could just kind of concentrate. And once you get going,
- 17:31Speaker 3: the nerves go, and you're back in the zone. You're
- 17:34Speaker 3: doing what you've been doing for months and months of training,
- 17:36Speaker 3: and you're off. And the weather was great. It was
- 17:40Speaker 3: quite cool in the morning. It got a bit warmer,
- 17:42Speaker 3: but it's perfect conditions.
- 17:45Speaker 1: My very first marathon, I went up to Yorkshire, basically
- 17:48Speaker 1: because we had some family out there. And I tied
- 17:52Speaker 1: it in with a family visit And I'd been training.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I didn't belong to a club. I could do 20
- 17:59Speaker 1: miles quite comfortably. I hadn't gone beyond that. But it
- 18:03Speaker 1: was a very low-key marathon. It was set in Barnsley
- 18:07Speaker 1: Town Centre. And I thought, well, there's not many people here.
- 18:10Speaker 1: There might have been a couple of hundred, you know.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And so there were some good runners. And it took
- 18:14Speaker 1: us right out into Yorkshire countryside. And at one point,
- 18:17Speaker 1: I couldn't see anybody in front of me. I looked around.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I couldn't see anybody behind me. And I thought, am
- 18:23Speaker 1: I on the right road? And then I saw a sign.
- 18:26Speaker 1: You know what road signs are like? They're very misleading.
- 18:29Speaker 1: I remember coming in. I thought, it can't be very
- 18:31Speaker 1: far to go. So I saw this road sign. It
- 18:33Speaker 1: wasn't an official sign. It said Barnsley 1. I thought, oh, great.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Only a mile to go. So I run about a mile.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I saw another sign, different sign. It said Barnsley 1.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Oh, no.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Anyway, that was my first experience. Four hours and eight minutes.
- 18:50Speaker 1: And I thought, I can lose eight minutes. I've got
- 18:54Speaker 1: to get sub four. So I did the Thanet Marathon,
- 18:57Speaker 1: which wasn't too long, perhaps six months afterwards. Four hours,
- 19:00Speaker 1: 13 minutes. That's heavy, though, isn't it? Yeah, it was tough.
- 19:03Speaker 1: So I thought, oh, that's it. That's it for me.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I've done it. But then randomly, years and years later,
- 19:08Speaker 1: I got a place in London, which I took. But
- 19:12Speaker 1: that's another story. I'll tell you about that later. Anyway,
- 19:14Speaker 1: so what about you, Catherine? Did you find it a
- 19:17Speaker 1: struggle to get going because of the crowds or did
- 19:20Speaker 1: you find your training pace was okay?
- 19:22Speaker 2: Yeah, no, actually pretty much the same as Paul because
- 19:24Speaker 2: I was in my pen quite early because Paul ran...
- 19:28Speaker 2: His start time was a little bit before mine, but
- 19:30Speaker 2: obviously because we went off together. So actually, when I
- 19:32Speaker 2: got into my pen, I had a good hour and
- 19:35Speaker 2: there was only sort of like a splattering, splattering of
- 19:37Speaker 2: people like turning up. So I sort of positioned myself
- 19:41Speaker 2: so that I was near the front of my pen,
- 19:43Speaker 2: which was really good. You know, you come 20 minutes
- 19:46Speaker 2: later and there was hordes of people they're just pouring
- 19:49Speaker 2: in pouring in but I was really lucky um because
- 19:53Speaker 2: I was early and um no I I you know
- 19:57Speaker 2: I got off on pace and yes there's a lot
- 19:59Speaker 2: of people around you but I managed to hold my
- 20:01Speaker 2: pace and I didn't find it you know too busy
- 20:05Speaker 2: and Yes, you've got a lot of people around you,
- 20:07Speaker 2: but I've done a lot of big marathons.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, experience, yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 2: I'm used to it. And, you know, the water stations
- 20:12Speaker 2: are a little bit tricky. You've got to cut across.
- 20:14Speaker 2: But otherwise, no, I found it absolutely fine.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Great, great, excellent. Okay, it's time for another bit of
- 20:21Speaker 1: music now. And what we're going to do now is
- 20:24Speaker 1: just going to just make a little adjustment. Put that there.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Right.
- 20:30Speaker 1: That's it, okay. I've got the right song in the
- 20:33Speaker 1: right place now because we've got another birthday boy here. Now,
- 20:36Speaker 1: Paul and Catherine, if I ever said to you that
- 20:38Speaker 1: this gentleman is 75, it's his birthday last week, his
- 20:41Speaker 1: name is Gordon Matthew Thomas Summer. Quiz question for you.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Would you know who that is? Bearing in mind he's
- 20:49Speaker 1: 75 during the week. Now, I don't blame you because
- 20:52Speaker 1: I had to look it up. But this gentleman, he
- 20:58Speaker 1: was the lead singer of a group. There were three
- 21:00Speaker 1: of them. And his name is Sting. Ah. And another thing,
- 21:08Speaker 1: another bit of trivia, he got his nickname because back
- 21:11Speaker 1: in the days when he was playing in an early band,
- 21:14Speaker 1: he always used to wear a yellow and black jumper.
- 21:17Speaker 1: And they used to say, here comes the bumblebee. And
- 21:20Speaker 1: they started calling him Sting. And the name stuck, and
- 21:23Speaker 1: he loved it. And that stuck forever. So anyway, this
- 21:27Speaker 1: one's going back to 1979. Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, 75,
- 21:29Speaker 1: during the week, This is Sting and the police. A
- 21:35Speaker 1: message in a bowl.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Sending out an S.O.S.
- 22:02Speaker 1: There you go, that's Gordon and Matthew Thomas Summer, better
- 22:05Speaker 1: known as Sting. And there was a lead singer of
- 22:07Speaker 1: The Police and that was back in 1979. They don't
- 22:11Speaker 1: make them like that anymore, do they? OK, so we're
- 22:16Speaker 1: back with Paul and Catherine in the studio. So we've
- 22:20Speaker 1: got away from the start line. You've done your run
- 22:24Speaker 1: and you've got your medal. So what happened next? How
- 22:28Speaker 1: long was it before you actually saw each other?
- 22:31Speaker 2: LAUGHTER Actually, it wasn't too long. So you came in
- 22:36Speaker 2: probably about 40 minutes before me. So by the time
- 22:41Speaker 2: you sorted yourself out, it's really hard, though, finding each
- 22:45Speaker 2: other because of the phone signal. And you've got to
- 22:48Speaker 2: wait to get your bag, which is in a bag drop,
- 22:50Speaker 2: to get your phone. We don't run with our phones.
- 22:53Speaker 2: So for me, it was great because I came through,
- 22:57Speaker 2: got my medal, got my bag, get a lovely foil blanket,
- 23:01Speaker 2: chatted to a lovely lady from New York. We were
- 23:04Speaker 2: talking about New York Marathon and London Marathon. and our
- 23:08Speaker 2: times and everything. So that was really nice. And then
- 23:10Speaker 2: I went and got my bag and yeah, it wasn't
- 23:14Speaker 2: for me. I only had about five minutes. We managed
- 23:17Speaker 2: to connect on phone. We managed to phone each other
- 23:20Speaker 2: and realise we were standing, what, about 10 foot.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Away from each other.
- 23:24Speaker 2: I'm here, I'm here, I'm here. We were doing that,
- 23:26Speaker 2: that whole thing. So for me, it was pretty good,
- 23:28Speaker 2: but you probably had longer to wait.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Did you have a bit longer?
- 23:31Speaker 3: Yeah, a little bit of time, but it was great
- 23:33Speaker 3: because they got some free Erdinger. Erdinger? Erdinger? Free beer? Erdinger.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, the beer.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah, the alcohol-free. So I managed to sink a couple
- 23:43Speaker 3: of those afterwards. So, yeah, I occupied myself. But, yeah, no,
- 23:50Speaker 3: it wasn't too bad. I mean, time goes fast. Once
- 23:53Speaker 3: you finish a marathon, you are … in bits to
- 23:56Speaker 3: be honest um so it takes a while to sort
- 23:58Speaker 3: of gather yourself back together and then stagger to you
- 24:01Speaker 3: to the backdrop grab your bag and get some food
- 24:05Speaker 3: and drink down you.
- 24:06Speaker 1: And so was your hotel far from start it's.
- 24:08Speaker 3: About half an hour walk so it's perfect yeah perfect
- 24:10Speaker 3: like a little warm-up in the morning and then a
- 24:12Speaker 3: perfect warm down after it's really good to keep legs
- 24:15Speaker 3: moving yeah because as soon as you sit down for
- 24:17Speaker 3: half an hour yet everything seizes.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Up and you stayed for a few days didn't you
- 24:21Speaker 1: because i text you and and you said you're on
- 24:23Speaker 1: the way to the airport And I don't know, I
- 24:25Speaker 1: just thought you was on your way to Gatwick to
- 24:26Speaker 1: pick up somebody. But you were actually on your way
- 24:29Speaker 1: to Berlin airport.
- 24:30Speaker 2: We were on the way.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Yes.
- 24:31Speaker 2: So we flew on the Friday because you've got to
- 24:34Speaker 2: pick up your number. You've got to go to the expo.
- 24:36Speaker 3: That's another story.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:39Speaker 2: The travelling is, oh, that's the only thing about an
- 24:42Speaker 2: international marathon. You've got your flight and you've got, it's
- 24:45Speaker 2: a lot more involved. So we pretty much spent all
- 24:49Speaker 2: Friday travelling and queuing. Lots and lots of queuing for
- 24:52Speaker 2: our number.
- 24:53Speaker 3: It took three hours to get through passport control when
- 24:56Speaker 3: we got to Berlin. Three hours.
- 24:58Speaker 2: So it was pretty.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:01Speaker 2: So we were absolutely exhausted, weren't we? We were absolutely exhausted.
- 25:07Speaker 2: So then we had the Saturday, really chilling, feet up, eating,
- 25:11Speaker 2: carb loading, just really, really resting. We really believe in
- 25:16Speaker 2: resting the day before. So we don't do the park run.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Some people do. I know Nikki went off and did
- 25:22Speaker 2: park run, nice and slow and easy, but we like
- 25:24Speaker 2: to really, really rest up. And then we didn't fly
- 25:27Speaker 2: home till Wednesday evening because Berlin is a great city.
- 25:32Speaker 2: And we did all of the sightseeing, you know, Checkpoint
- 25:36Speaker 2: Charlie and obviously the Berlin Wall stuff is just amazing.
- 25:40Speaker 2: So we filled those three days with recovering, walking, eating.
- 25:44Speaker 4: It was great.
- 25:45Speaker 1: It was really great. It's great because, I mean, it's
- 25:48Speaker 1: nice to take that time because some people, depending on
- 25:51Speaker 1: their job, kind of fly out on Friday and do
- 25:54Speaker 1: the marathon after back at work on the Monday you
- 25:56Speaker 1: know so it's nice nice to chill out um okay
- 25:59Speaker 1: so well I think we we by the sound of
- 26:02Speaker 1: it you've had a fantastic experience you both did great
- 26:04Speaker 1: times and it's a one to pour into the memory
- 26:08Speaker 1: banks um but we're going to talk a little bit
- 26:10Speaker 1: about the running club now um so Catherine uh really
- 26:15Speaker 1: so you joined when did you join So 2006.
- 26:17Speaker 2: So 20 years ago. 20 years ago.
- 26:20Speaker 1: So what's your role at the club now?
- 26:22Speaker 2: Head coach.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Head coach, right.
- 26:25Speaker 2: And lots of other roles.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:27Speaker 2: We've got an amazing committee. We've got a very strong committee,
- 26:31Speaker 2: so we all really help each other.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:33Speaker 2: I do lots on the committee.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:36Speaker 1: And the club, I mean, as you know, I was
- 26:38Speaker 1: a member of the club for many years, and the
- 26:40Speaker 1: sort of old age and injuries just caught up with me.
- 26:43Speaker 1: But you're so lucky to have the facilities, you know.
- 26:46Speaker 1: And let me just turn the clock back. When I
- 26:48Speaker 1: started running with Folkestone, actually it was called Folkestone Athletics Club.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And I was quite adamant as years went by that
- 26:55Speaker 1: it should be changed to Folkestone Running Club. Not knowing
- 26:57Speaker 1: that in the future years it'd be Folkestone Running and
- 27:00Speaker 1: Athletics Club. But when I started, we used to meet
- 27:03Speaker 1: up Sean Cliff Camp for our Tuesday nine mile run.
- 27:08Speaker 1: And then we, through a contact, we went to the
- 27:12Speaker 1: old cricket pavilion. Well, there was a basement there. down
- 27:16Speaker 1: underneath which was leaking and raining and we used to
- 27:19Speaker 1: change in there but that was like it was like
- 27:23Speaker 1: I don't know Wembley Stadium to us because we'd been
- 27:25Speaker 1: changing in the street and things like that so then
- 27:27Speaker 1: we got in touch with somebody from the cricket club
- 27:30Speaker 1: said why don't you come upstairs so we then started
- 27:33Speaker 1: training there on a Tuesday night but that was a
- 27:38Speaker 1: great old great era great time but things have changed
- 27:41Speaker 1: now the club the old cricket club is no longer
- 27:44Speaker 1: with us We've got this wonderful three hills and you've
- 27:47Speaker 1: got a track. And so that must have boosted the membership.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah, great. Because I'm the same as you
- 27:53Speaker 2: and Kev. I joined when we were at the old
- 27:56Speaker 2: cricket pavilion. That's when I joined. And we used to train,
- 27:59Speaker 2: like I said, on the field and the roads. And,
- 28:03Speaker 2: you know, even though we had a lovely place to meet.
- 28:06Speaker 2: So three years ago is when the track was built
- 28:10Speaker 2: down the far end. sort of like behind the leisure facility.
- 28:15Speaker 2: So yeah, oh my gosh, you know, it's absolutely amazing. So,
- 28:20Speaker 2: you know, it's a safe environment to run because you're
- 28:23Speaker 2: not running on roads, you haven't got cars and, dogs
- 28:26Speaker 2: on long leads. In the winter, it's floodlit. So people
- 28:30Speaker 2: who don't like running at night, which we get a lot,
- 28:33Speaker 2: people will say, in the winter, I really don't want
- 28:36Speaker 2: to come to club because I don't like running in
- 28:38Speaker 2: the dark. We've got a lovely floodlit track. It's safe.
- 28:43Speaker 2: And obviously, it's a lovely surface, lovely surface to run on.
- 28:47Speaker 2: So yes, our membership has been boosted. and I think
- 28:54Speaker 2: people you know of all abilities can come along come
- 28:57Speaker 2: along to the club and really take advantage really take
- 29:00Speaker 2: advantage of it it's really great.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Right and Paul when you joined what period did you
- 29:06Speaker 1: join the club.
- 29:07Speaker 3: So I joined in 2014 end of 2014 yeah and
- 29:11Speaker 3: so you.
- 29:11Speaker 1: 2014 was it was you straight into the three hills
- 29:16Speaker 1: yep straight into the three hills round the cricket pitch
- 29:19Speaker 1: yeah on the grass yeah so yeah So the track
- 29:24Speaker 1: is fantastic.
- 29:27Speaker 3: In the winter, it especially comes into its own. As
- 29:29Speaker 3: Catherine said, it's floodlit, it's safe, it's flat. So it's
- 29:34Speaker 3: a brilliant facility, especially for Folkestone.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Great. And I think it's... That also attracted a lot
- 29:41Speaker 1: of youngsters. You've got a junior section. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:43Speaker 2: So Pat Hannis runs the junior section. So we've always
- 29:47Speaker 2: had juniors. She does use the sports hall as well.
- 29:50Speaker 2: But also it was very difficult for her, you know,
- 29:53Speaker 2: training outside on the field and hiring the hall, just,
- 29:57Speaker 2: you know, working around all the other things at the facility.
- 30:00Speaker 2: So for her, she has really.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Um it's really benefited and she has got some phenomenal
- 30:08Speaker 2: runners that have gone very very high up because she
- 30:11Speaker 2: does full uh track and field where we we just
- 30:15Speaker 2: run um she does you know the full um hurdles
- 30:19Speaker 2: and long jump and everything with the kids so um
- 30:22Speaker 2: and and they they train they have three nights on
- 30:25Speaker 2: the track which is really really good brilliant.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Yeah and um i must admit that i compared the
- 30:31Speaker 1: um check weight district sports for I don't know they
- 30:37Speaker 1: were primary schools that's right and there were a few
- 30:40Speaker 1: events that they there was running around the track but
- 30:43Speaker 1: there was a few events that they took them away
- 30:46Speaker 1: and what was it they they were throwing something I
- 30:50Speaker 1: can't remember what it was but yeah and the standing
- 30:54Speaker 1: long jump or something like that yeah sort of what
- 30:58Speaker 1: can I say events to suit that age group you
- 31:00Speaker 1: know because you've got to be a bit careful And
- 31:02Speaker 1: we don't, you know, youngsters sort of overdoing it. And
- 31:06Speaker 1: you know that, Catherine. And, you know, their muscles are
- 31:08Speaker 1: still growing. But, yeah, it's opened up a whole lot
- 31:12Speaker 1: of the facility and the track. You know, the three hills,
- 31:16Speaker 1: I mean. It's just sport has come on so much
- 31:20Speaker 1: since that facility was opened. And the club and the towns,
- 31:24Speaker 1: especially the hockey. I mean, now I have to report
- 31:27Speaker 1: every week. Do you know how many teams the hockey
- 31:29Speaker 1: have got? Fifteen teams they've got. I can't remember which
- 31:34Speaker 1: way round it is. It's seven, seven men's and eight
- 31:36Speaker 1: ladies or the other way round. And just working it out,
- 31:39Speaker 1: 11 people in a team. That's 165 players that go
- 31:43Speaker 1: out and play hockey. That's just the players before there's coaches,
- 31:48Speaker 1: you know, tea ladies and whatever they take with them.
- 31:51Speaker 1: But yeah. OK, time for another music, bit of a
- 31:55Speaker 1: music break. We haven't played much music today, which is
- 31:57Speaker 1: a bit unusual. Been doing a lot of talking. But
- 32:00Speaker 1: time's getting by, so I just want to put this
- 32:01Speaker 1: one in because I love this one. This is kind
- 32:03Speaker 1: of run-related. Enjoy this one. This is The Cause and Runaway.
- 32:43Speaker 1: that's the cause there now I just want to digress
- 32:48Speaker 1: a little bit but it's to do with running now
- 32:50Speaker 1: these guys have just come down from the Folkestone Park
- 32:52Speaker 1: Run but there's one bit that thanks to Dan McCarthy
- 32:57Speaker 1: and the Folkestone Running Club they put a little highlight
- 33:01Speaker 1: of park runs and where people have been so this
- 33:04Speaker 1: is just a quick one minute read out but I
- 33:06Speaker 1: love this one because it's kind of geography time geography
- 33:09Speaker 1: lesson time as we find out where our runners have
- 33:12Speaker 1: been in the park run So last week, first of all,
- 33:15Speaker 1: Andy Noble ran his park run in Edenbrook Country, which
- 33:18Speaker 1: is in Fleece in Hampshire. Caroline Curtis ran at Dartford Heath.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Alan Randall and Jane Wren were in Stevenage. Darren Crew
- 33:26Speaker 1: and Jodie Stokes ran at Netley Abbey, which I did
- 33:29Speaker 1: look up. It's kind of just off the River Solent
- 33:33Speaker 1: near Southampton. Greg Dixon and Paul Hannay found their park
- 33:36Speaker 1: run in Torveen near Inverness. Then the next day, they
- 33:39Speaker 1: both successfully run the Loch Ness Marathon. Nick Steele found
- 33:43Speaker 1: a lovely named park run called Bug Hunter Waters, which
- 33:47Speaker 1: is in Northstow in Cambridgeshire. Kate Evans was in Barnstable
- 33:51Speaker 1: in North Devon. Lara Parsons was in Norwich in Norfolk.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And the furthest travelled last weekend was a Martin Salmon
- 33:59Speaker 1: who run the Templehoffer Feld, which is west of Berlin. Yeah.
- 34:04Speaker 1: And a little birdie was telling me this morning that,
- 34:07Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you know this, but Martin did
- 34:09Speaker 1: have his name down to run the Berlin. And it
- 34:11Speaker 1: looks like he obviously went to Berlin. Now, I haven't
- 34:14Speaker 1: seen Martin, but it sounds like he didn't run the marathon.
- 34:18Speaker 1: I'm sure we would have heard. So that's a little
- 34:20Speaker 1: mystery at the moment. He did run.
- 34:23Speaker 3: I think he did run.
- 34:23Speaker 4: He did run.
- 34:24Speaker 1: He did run. He did run.
- 34:25Speaker 2: He did four hours 17.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Did he? Well, what do you know? He did run.
- 34:29Speaker 2: He did run.
- 34:29Speaker 1: That one slipped through the net. Oh, thank you for that, Catherine.
- 34:32Speaker 3: That's good.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Oh, I must tell Terry King because he
- 34:34Speaker 1: was of the same opinion. Did he run or did
- 34:37Speaker 1: he not run?
- 34:38Speaker 2: He keeps a little bit of a low profile, Martin.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 2: But no, no, he did. We spoke to him. It's
- 34:43Speaker 2: his seventh time he's run Berlin.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Is it really?
- 34:47Speaker 2: Yes, he's done 138. He's done 138 marathons.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Oh, goodness me. It's amazing, isn't it? 138. What are
- 34:54Speaker 1: his knees like, really?
- 34:55Speaker 3: How do you get the time?
- 34:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the thing, the time, isn't it? It's such
- 35:01Speaker 1: a commitment. And anybody that's ever run a marathon will
- 35:03Speaker 1: know that you've got to have the family on your side,
- 35:05Speaker 1: that is for sure. Because when you get home and
- 35:08Speaker 1: you're all grumpy, and especially if you're a working mum
- 35:11Speaker 1: and the kids want their dinner and they go, oh,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I just want to go to bed. Okay, well, we
- 35:17Speaker 1: are very slowly running out of time. So where has
- 35:20Speaker 1: this hour gone? So, Paul, was there anything else that,
- 35:24Speaker 1: I don't know, was there any... memorable moments about berlin
- 35:27Speaker 1: that you want to tell us about or was it
- 35:29Speaker 1: just kind of uh just breezing it was lovely and
- 35:32Speaker 1: it's everything you expected um yeah.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Yeah i think it went pretty much to plan there's
- 35:38Speaker 3: a slight little dip in the middle but uh it
- 35:40Speaker 3: went pretty much.
- 35:41Speaker 1: It's just the queuing isn't it by the sound of
- 35:43Speaker 1: it that uh well yeah.
- 35:45Speaker 3: On the friday the friday the travel day was the
- 35:47Speaker 3: worst day but um the actual marathon yeah it i
- 35:50Speaker 3: might my pace was pretty much on on target i
- 35:54Speaker 3: felt pretty good most of it um so yeah it
- 35:58Speaker 3: was yeah it went yeah i got a pb so i'm.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Happy yeah yeah exactly in a in a different country
- 36:05Speaker 1: yeah and what about katherine for you any highs or
- 36:07Speaker 1: lows or anything or just smooth i think yeah.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Again i just had a really good run and the
- 36:12Speaker 2: support is great but you know you cannot beat that
- 36:16Speaker 2: finish you run through the brandenburg gate yes about 300
- 36:20Speaker 2: meters from the finish it's not quite the finish but
- 36:23Speaker 2: you can see it coming up and the excitement not
- 36:27Speaker 2: one for yourself because you're thinking yes i'm at the
- 36:30Speaker 2: end of the marathon but the crowd builds there's a
- 36:34Speaker 2: lot the crowd are going absolutely mad.
- 36:37Speaker 1: And do do you run through the brandenburg gate twice
- 36:40Speaker 1: do you do it at the start no Well, many
- 36:42Speaker 1: years ago, it used to start at the far end.
- 36:45Speaker 1: There's a big....
- 36:47Speaker 3: The Victory Column.
- 36:47Speaker 2: The Victory Column.
- 36:48Speaker 1: And then they used to run down that sort of mall,
- 36:50Speaker 1: if you like. And there was always, the first couple
- 36:53Speaker 1: of Berlin marathons, the elite, it was like a sprint.
- 36:57Speaker 1: It was absolute, like, balls out to see who could
- 37:01Speaker 1: get through the Brandenburg Gate the first.
- 37:02Speaker 2: No, not how it... You do see the Victory Column.
- 37:05Speaker 1: It's behind you.
- 37:06Speaker 3: So you run towards the Victory Column. We start in
- 37:08Speaker 3: between the Victory Column and... And the Bradenburg Gate. And
- 37:11Speaker 3: so then it goes out on a big loop and
- 37:13Speaker 3: then come back and finish through.
- 37:14Speaker 1: The Bradenburg Gate.
- 37:15Speaker 2: The finish is phenomenal though, isn't it?
- 37:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it's fantastic.
- 37:17Speaker 2: And you go through the gate and like you said,
- 37:19Speaker 2: you can see the big Finnish gantry, which is always
- 37:22Speaker 2: the best thing in a marathon to see the Finnish gantry. Yeah.
- 37:26Speaker 2: And the big clock and everything. But that was pretty special,
- 37:28Speaker 2: wasn't it?
- 37:29Speaker 1: Was there a commentator speaking in German?
- 37:32Speaker 3: I had no idea.
- 37:33Speaker 1: No idea at.
- 37:34Speaker 2: The end of a marathon, but I think there was.
- 37:36Speaker 2: I was thinking, where's Kevin Daly? He would give me
- 37:39Speaker 2: an actual shout-out like you do in every race we do.
- 37:42Speaker 2: It's really great. You always give us a proper shout-out.
- 37:45Speaker 1: I will say this. On my London marathon, I did
- 37:47Speaker 1: have a T-shirt with ferret written on it. And I
- 37:50Speaker 1: got some sticks, especially through Canary Wharf. Where's your ferret, mate?
- 37:55Speaker 1: Up your trousers. That was one. And I've got a ferret.
- 37:58Speaker 1: I'm going to run faster than you. But when I
- 38:01Speaker 1: was coming down the Mall and there was this final commentator,
- 38:04Speaker 1: she was just kind of reading out the T-shirts like
- 38:06Speaker 1: I do at races. And she said, oh, Monsieur Ferret, welcome.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Welcome from France. I said, it's not ferret, it's ferret.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I like ferret. I think we'll start calling you that.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Monsieur Ferret.
- 38:19Speaker 1: The sports ferret, yeah. All right, so what we're going
- 38:24Speaker 1: to do now is I think what we're going to
- 38:26Speaker 1: do is just going to play the last music, your
- 38:28Speaker 1: bit of music. And, you know, I don't know what
- 38:31Speaker 1: to put in the playlist. We're trying to find suitable songs,
- 38:35Speaker 1: and I'm not ready for this one. So we go
- 38:37Speaker 1: with what's on the playlist. This is Scouting for Girls,
- 38:40Speaker 1: and she's so lovely.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Good song.
- 38:54Speaker 4: I love the way she fills her clothes. I love
- 38:57Speaker 4: those freckles on her nose. I love the way she
- 39:02Speaker 4: bites her lips. I love the way she shakes her hips.
- 39:06Speaker 4: I love the way she makes me drool.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Okay, we are slowly chatting off here. I mean, we
- 39:12Speaker 1: could be here all day. And it's been so nice
- 39:15Speaker 1: to have her. Paul and Catherine on it really is
- 39:19Speaker 1: we've only got 30 seconds left so it just leaves
- 39:22Speaker 1: me to say that I'll be back next Saturday I've
- 39:23Speaker 1: got four guests in who are going to tell us
- 39:26Speaker 1: about a challenge they took on in the meantime Catherine
- 39:28Speaker 1: thank you so much for coming in.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Thank you, Kevin.
- 39:31Speaker 1: And Paul, well done to your PB, and thanks for
- 39:33Speaker 1: coming in and joining us today. It's been great. Right,
- 39:35Speaker 1: so the clock is still slowly, it just doesn't slow down,
- 39:38Speaker 1: this clock. Like I say, I'll be back next week
- 39:41Speaker 1: because the four guests, their challenge included a 32-mile bike ride,
- 39:45Speaker 1: a nine-mile hike, and a two-mile paddle. So don't forget
- 39:49Speaker 1: to tune in to that next week. Have a great weekend, everybody.
