- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and today we've got a tiny but super useful verb for you. Luna: And I'm Luna. Last episode we were finding things, 'å finne'. Now we're going to answer stuff? Lucas: Exactly. Today it's all about 'å svare' — to answer. Luna: Å svare. Okay, that sounds good. How do I say 'I answer'? Lucas: You say 'jeg svarer'. Let's break it down: 'å svare' is the infinitive, and when you do it now, it's 'jeg svarer'. Luna: Jeg svarer. So if someone asks a question, I can say 'jeg svarer'. Lucas: Perfect. Now, how about asking 'can you answer?' That's 'kan du svare?'. Luna: Kan du svare? So if I need you to answer, I'd say 'kan du svare?' Lucas: Exactly. And a common one: 'svare på telefonen' — answer the phone. Luna: Svare på telefonen. I like that. Sometimes I don't want to answer the phone. Lucas: Right. And if someone isn't answering, you can say 'hun svarer ikke' — she doesn't answer. Luna: Hun svarer ikke. Yeah, that's useful. My friend never answers my texts. Lucas: Then you'd say 'hun svarer ikke på meldingen' — she doesn't answer the message. 'Meldingen' means 'the message'. Luna: Svare på meldingen. Okay, so if she doesn't answer the message, that's 'hun svarer ikke på meldingen'. Lucas: Spot on. Let's practice the forms a bit. I'll say 'å svare'. You repeat. Luna: Å svare. Lucas: Jeg svarer. Luna: Jeg svarer. Lucas: Kan du svare? Luna: Kan du svare? Lucas: Svare på telefonen. Luna: Svare på telefonen. Lucas: Hun svarer ikke. Luna: Hun svarer ikke. Lucas: Svare på meldingen. Luna: Svare på meldingen. Lucas: You're nailing these. Now, let's put it all together in a tiny scene. Imagine your phone rings while you're talking to me. Luna: Okay. So, my phone rings. I say 'Unnskyld, jeg må svare på telefonen.' Lucas: Perfect. Then after you hang up, I ask 'Hvem var det?' — who was it? Luna: Det var kunden. Hun svarer ikke på meldingen min. Lucas: Oh, that's a good sentence. 'Hun svarer ikke' — she doesn't answer. Luna: Yes. So annoying. But at least I can complain in Norwegian now. Lucas: That's the spirit. Let's do one more round, but this time you ask me the questions. Luna: Okay. Kan du svare på telefonen? Lucas: Ja, jeg svarer. See, I answered. Luna: Nice. And if you don't answer, I'd say 'Han svarer ikke'. Lucas: Exactly. We just swapped the pronoun. 'Hun' for she, 'han' for he. Luna: So easy. Lucas: Let's take a quick pause. Lucas: Perfect. And 'can you answer?' Luna: Kan du svare? Lucas: Great. Now, let's try a little challenge. I'll describe a situation, and you respond in Norwegian using what we learned. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: Your phone is ringing. What do you say? Luna: Jeg må svare på telefonen. Lucas: Exactly. Now, your friend hasn't replied to your message. How would you say that? Luna: Hun svarer ikke på meldingen. Lucas: You've got it. That's all for today. Remember to practice 'å svare' in your daily conversations. Luna: Yes.
