- 0:00Coco Moon: Hello, darling. Welcome back to Happy You Happy
- 0:04Dog. Before we begin today, I just want to say thank you.
- 0:09Thank you so much for all the love surrounding last week's
- 0:14episode. Sharing those memories of my late son Ko was incredibly
- 0:21personal, and your love and kindness mean more to me than I
- 0:26can put into words. I'm so grateful you are here with me.
- 0:33Now I want to talk about Hoku, my tabby cat. Some of you might
- 0:38have seen him pop up in earlier episodes, he's the eldest of the
- 0:44bunch, and he kept his mama on her toes a little bit last week.
- 0:50Oh, my Hoku! First, you need to understand something about this
- 0:54boy. Hoku is very food motivated, and when I say very,
- 1:02I mean very. I've actually called him my emotional eater
- 1:07before. This boy doesn't eat because he's hungry. Well, I'm
- 1:13sure sometimes he is hungry, but I'm convinced he also eats
- 1:18because eating is one of his favorite hobbies, he could be
- 1:23sleeping peacefully somewhere at the opposite end of the house,
- 1:28and the second I walk into the kitchen, there he is, Hoku. I
- 1:35mean, how does he know? Does he have some kind of built-in
- 1:40kitchen severance insist him, and he doesn't just show up. Oh
- 1:46no, he hops right onto the counter, looks at me with those
- 1:51adorable eyes, and very affectionately asks, "Mama, and
- 1:58he actually says, "Mama, I've tried so many times to record it
- 2:04just to prove it, which obviously translates to "Are we
- 2:10eating? Apparently, in Hoku's world, Mama entering the kitchen
- 2:18means the restaurant is Officially open, 24 hours a day,
- 2:23seven days a week. No reservations required. Honestly,
- 2:29some days I feel like I'm running a very exclusive
- 2:33restaurant for four extremely high maintenance customers. Last
- 2:41week I noticed something. My little food enthusiast wasn't
- 2:47quite as enthusiastic about his meals, and that was very unusual
- 2:54for Hoku. He is nine and a half years old now, and I know that
- 3:01as our animals move through different stages of life, their
- 3:06needs, behaviors, and routines can change. But when something
- 3:12changes in one of my babies, I notice, especially when it's
- 3:19something that has always been such a big part of who they are,
- 3:25but don't worry. Hoku is very much back to himself now, and I
- 3:32think this is something so many of us pet parents understand.
- 3:38Our far babies can't sit us down and say, I haven't been feeling
- 3:44quite like myself lately. Or, mommy, my tummy's been a little
- 3:50boo-boo. Or, even I'm not just hungry today. Don't worry, mama.
- 3:59Wouldn't that be nice? Tell me what's going on, and Mummy will
- 4:04take care of it. No. Instead, we are left studying their little
- 4:11signs, their appetite, their energy, how they are sleeping,
- 4:16how they are moving, how they are behaving, and yes, their poo
- 4:22and pee. Oh, don't even get me started on that again. If you
- 4:28listen to episode eight, you already know that Manas daily
- 4:33poop has an extraordinary amount of influence over my emotional
- 4:38well-being. A perfect poop, wonderful. Oh, it's. well. Too
- 4:44soft, different color. Oh no! What happened? What was her
- 4:49dinner last night? Is she sick? Oh, don't you act like it's
- 4:56gross! I know most of you are naughty, right? But here's the
- 5:04thing: underneath all those ridiculous little things we do,
- 5:11there is something very real. We love these little beings so
- 5:17much, and we know their lives are shorter than ours, much
- 5:24shorter than we wish they were. Sometimes that thought alone is
- 5:32enough to keep me awake at night, because I want them here,
- 5:38healthy, happy, safe, for as long as possible, and I think
- 5:46one of the hardest parts of loving our fur baby is knowing
- 5:51that they depend on us to notice when something isn't right. So
- 5:58of course we pay attention, and you know what? Sometimes I am so
- 6:05glad that I am too much. There is a Japanese expression I love,
- 6:14"iki ichiyu. It means going back and forth between joy and worry
- 6:21over every little thing. And darling, if that doesn't
- 6:26describe pet parenting, I don't know what does. One day
- 6:33everything looks wonderful. The next day, one tiny thing
- 6:39changes, and suddenly we are questioning every decision we've
- 6:44ever made. Are we feeding them the right food? Is the food boat
- 6:50the right height? Is their bed too soft, too hard?
- 6:57Are they happy? Should we be doing Something differently, and
- 7:03then of course we open the internet. The internet, a
- 7:10tsunami of information, and that, darling, is where things
- 7:18can get even more complicated, Because sometimes the more we
- 7:24try to learn, the less confident we feel, and that's what I want
- 7:32to explore with you today-not how to stop worrying about our
- 7:37babies, because clearly I haven't figured that one out,
- 7:44but how we can become more informed, more mindful, and more
- 7:50confident in the way we care for these little souls we adore so
- 7:56much. So let's talk about that tsunami of information, because
- 8:04here's something I find fascinating. We have access to
- 8:09more information about caring for our fur babies than ever
- 8:13before, and somehow, so many loving pet parents feel less
- 8:20confident than ever. Think about it. You notice your dog is
- 8:26scratching a lot, so naturally you want to find out what's
- 8:31going on. You go online, and within five minutes, you found
- 8:3770 possible explanations, 12 different supplements, six
- 8:41miracle products, and at least three people telling you
- 8:44everything you've been doing is wrong. Right? One person says
- 8:50it's the food. Another says it's allergies. Someone says you
- 8:57should change the shampoo, and then someone else says, "Oh, you
- 9:02should never use that shampoo. And there you are. You started
- 9:09out with one question, and now you have 37 new ones. And of
- 9:16course, all those recommendations come with such
- 9:20confidence. This is what your dog needs. Every cat should eat
- 9:27this. Never feed your pet that, or feed them this. It's
- 9:35exhausting, I know. And it can be especially overwhelming when
- 9:42every piece of advice seems to come from someone who genuinely
- 9:47believes they are helping. Now, don't get me wrong, I love that
- 9:54we have access to information. I've learned wonderful things
- 9:59from books. Research fellow animal professionals and other
- 10:03pet parents, but here's what I've come to understand:
- 10:09information is not the same as understanding, and understanding
- 10:18what is happening is not always the same as understanding why,
- 10:27and what works beautifully for one pet may not be appropriate
- 10:33for another, because our four babies aren't all the same. They
- 10:39have different personalities, different histories, different
- 10:43sensitivities, different needs, and they live with different
- 10:48families, with different lifestyles and ways of caring
- 10:52for them, and even with the same household. I mean, just look up
- 11:00my own household, four completely different little
- 11:05fairy personalities. Hoku likes his food soft and moist. Soda
- 11:11loves freeze dry rabbit, but add warm water like the instructions
- 11:17tells you to. Absolutely not. And then Haru, oh, that boy
- 11:26would try to steal bacon steak and potato chips, and Mana,
- 11:32well, Mana pouts because she thinks her cat brothers are
- 11:38getting girl maintainers, and she is being terribly neglected.
- 11:47Four four babies, one mamma, and four very different opinions
- 11:53about what's for dinner. So why would we assume there is one
- 12:00perfect formula for every pet, and I want to share something
- 12:06personal with you. I've been looking at pet wellness through
- 12:10a more holistic lens for about 10 years now. I'm also a
- 12:15certified animal naturopath, and one of the biggest shifts in my
- 12:21own journey, was learning to look beyond an isolated symptom
- 12:26and consider the whole being. Years ago, if one of my babies
- 12:32developed an issue, my attention would often go straight to that
- 12:37particular problem, tear stains. Let's find something for that
- 12:42tear stains, an upset tummy. Let's address the tummy,
- 12:49policing, itching. The list goes on. And of course, sometimes an
- 12:56individual symptom needs immediate attention. But over
- 13:01time I became much more interested in understanding the
- 13:05why. What has changed? When did it start? How are they eating,
- 13:12moving, and behaving? And what else might be happening in their
- 13:17everyday lives? That broader perspective changed the way I
- 13:23care for my fur babies, because sometimes a symptom is only one
- 13:30piece of that story, and understanding the bigger picture
- 13:35can help us make more informed decisions. Of course, that
- 13:41doesn't mean ignoring symptoms or delaying necessary medical
- 13:45care. It means being curious, being observant, and looking at
- 13:52the whole being.
- 13:56And yet, even with all that understanding, it's still so
- 14:02easy to get caught chasing the perfect solution, the perfect
- 14:07nutrition, the perfect care, the perfect supplements, the perfect
- 14:13everything, and I think sometimes, without even
- 14:18realizing it, we begin trusting every new recommendation more
- 14:24than our own observations. Let me ask you something: Have you
- 14:30ever changed something that was actually working well for your
- 14:35fur baby, simply because someone convinced you there was
- 14:40something better, or perhaps you've experienced the opposite.
- 14:47You've tried 100 different things, and nothing seems to be
- 14:52helping. That can be very overwhelming, and sometimes.
- 15:00Heartbreaking, because underneath all that searching,
- 15:05you're just trying to help the fur baby you love so much. I've
- 15:12certainly questioned my decisions after hearing a very
- 15:16convincing recommendation, but I've learned to ask myself
- 15:22something different now. Is this actually appropriate for my
- 15:29babies? Not every dog, not every cat, not the animal in the viral
- 15:36video, my baby, because no. nobody spends every day caring
- 15:45for my fur babies the way I do, I know their personalities,
- 15:51their preferences, their normal behaviors, and their energies,
- 15:57and that knowledge matters. It doesn't mean I know everything.
- 16:04It means I have something valuable to bring to every
- 16:08decision I make about their care, and that brings me to
- 16:14something I think we don't talk about nearly enough: the
- 16:20well-being of the human who's doing all this caring, because
- 16:26when we are constantly questioning ourselves,
- 16:30constantly feeling that whatever we are doing might not be
- 16:34enough, what happens to us? Now let's talk about that, my love.
- 16:45Think about it, darling. We make sure our four babies get luxury
- 16:50naps, but are we getting enough rest? When was the last time we
- 16:59thought about whether we feel joyful, peaceful, happy, and
- 17:04well taken care of, and I know sometimes we may feel we don't
- 17:11have the time for ourselves, or there are too many people, too
- 17:16many things to take care of before we even get to ourselves.
- 17:23I know, believe me. I'm not suggesting we all need to wake
- 17:29up at five in the morning, meditate for an hour, drink
- 17:32green juice, do our makeup and hair, and somehow become
- 17:37perfectly balanced human beings. Oh no, that's not happening to
- 17:42me. But here's what I've come to appreciate: our well-being
- 17:50matters too. Not just because we're the ones taking care of
- 17:55our fur babies, but because we are sharing a life together. How
- 18:03far babies experience the day with us, our voices, our moods,
- 18:10the environment we share, and yes, sometimes they respond to
- 18:16changes in how we are feeling too. Now, does that mean we have
- 18:23to be happy and peaceful every single day? Absolutely not. We
- 18:28are human. We worry. We get tired. We cry. But what if
- 18:35creating a happy home wasn't about doing everything
- 18:39perfectly? What if it began with simply becoming more aware of
- 18:45the lives we are sharing? That's actually part of what inspired
- 18:52something I've been creating. First way, like Feng Shui, but
- 18:59with if you are, it's my way of bringing together holistic pet
- 19:06wellness, thoughtful living, and the beautiful relationship we
- 19:11share with our fairy companions. And at its heart is a question I
- 19:18love: What would a happier, healthier home feel like for
- 19:24both of us? Not what everyone else says it should look like,
- 19:30not what the latest trend tells us to do, but what actually
- 19:36supports and elevates the lives we're sharing with these
- 19:41particular little beings we adore, and I think that's a
- 19:47conversation worth having, because sometimes the most
- 19:52meaningful changes begin when we stop looking everywhere else for
- 19:58answers and start. Are paying closer attention to the life
- 20:03right in front of us, and there is something else I love for us
- 20:09to explore next week. How do we know when to trust what we are
- 20:16noticing about our fur babies, and when it's time to seek
- 20:21another perspective, because loving our babies with all our
- 20:27hurts and feeling confident about the decisions we make for
- 20:32them are not always the same thing. Before we wrap up today,
- 20:41I'd love to invite you to take just a little moment each day
- 20:45this week to notice how you are feeling and how your fur baby is
- 20:51doing, and perhaps write it down or put it in your phone's notes
- 20:56app.
- 20:58Maybe just choose one word for yourself, or even an emoji,
- 21:04peaceful, tired, happy, stressed, left, and one little
- 21:09observation about your fur baby: playful, relaxed, extra cuddly,
- 21:15or maybe a little grumpy. And I personally would add pooted, but
- 21:26that's just me, darling. We are not trying to analyze everything
- 21:33or find something wrong. We are simply practicing mindful
- 21:38awareness, and who knows, you might begin noticing little
- 21:43things you hadn't paid attention to before. Now I think it's time
- 21:50to ask our fur babies what they will like us to know this week.
- 21:55This week's card from my love messages from your pet oracle is
- 22:02Ayu Z Zad. Oh, I love this. Perhaps they are reminding us
- 22:08that sometimes, in the middle of worrying, researching, and
- 22:12trying so hard to do everything right, we can give ourselves a
- 22:18little moment of peace. Not because everything has to be
- 22:23perfect, but because we deserve to enjoy this beautiful little
- 22:28life we are sharing with them too. I love to hear what you and
- 22:34your fur baby discovered together this week. Until then,
- 22:38take gentle care of yourself and your precious one, because your
- 22:44happiness matters.
