- 0:00Final segment with gino Oriama here on the Wells Fargo, you kind of women's
- 0:03basketball coach is shown. All right, one more thing on the topic of
- 0:06money. I know some of your players have done very well with an IL,
- 0:11but how has it affected the way you recruit now or has it?
- 0:16Well, it's affected the way everyone recruits to a certain extent. You know,
- 0:24if you're recruiting at the highest level, if you're trying to recruit the
- 0:28top ten players in the country, there's no way to get around it.
- 0:32It's probably going to cost you a lot of money. And you hope that
- 0:38you can get involved with some of those kids who value some other things more
- 0:44than just the money, you know, but there's no getting around You're going
- 0:48to have to pay these players. And now you know with this new proposal,
- 0:54you know you have to give which would in essence be every basketball player
- 0:59third thousand dollars just to come to school. And that's a minimum. That
- 1:03means you can give your best players one hundred you can give them whatever you
- 1:07whatever you desire. And you know it's no salary cap and an unlimited free
- 1:15agency. You know, we've talked about that. Yeah, and I don't
- 1:19know how anybody can operate in a system like that. It's crazy. It
- 1:23is, it is, it's insanity, you know. And and then if
- 1:29you're a player, you have no obligation whatsoever. I don't know if you
- 1:33saw the one line that was proposed. You have to guarantee a scholarship even
- 1:37if that player doesn't play that sport, so they can come to school,
- 1:41play a year and then decide I can't play anymore, I don't want to
- 1:42play anymore, and you still have to honor their scholarship. Think about that,
- 1:49Yeah, think about what that meants. That's wild. I can hire
- 1:53you to work in my restaurant. After a week you say, you know,
- 1:56I don't want to work here anymore, but you still got to pay,
- 1:59right, Yeah, that's crazy. That is great, you know.
- 2:04You know. So there's a whole set of issues coming up that are going
- 2:09to fundamentally change everything we think about about basketball college basketball. And you know,
- 2:17the sooner it gets to professional sports, the better will be for everybody.
- 2:22At least you know what you're dealing with, right and maybe the players
- 2:24will have to actually sign a contract that says I'm responsible for this, this,
- 2:30this, this, and this right now, the schools to take all
- 2:32the risks and the players get all the benefits, right, right, you
- 2:37know it's been all weeks and says he had her surgery. I'm sure you've
- 2:39talked to her once or twice. How's she doing? Doing great? I
- 2:45saw her yesterday and you know, our athletic training staff said she's she's doing
- 2:51great, that she's way ahead of where she normally would be at this time.
- 2:58So you know, she's been through this before when she was in high
- 3:01school, so it's not anything new. I don't like it for her.
- 3:07She doesn't like it for her. Right. You hate to see, you
- 3:12know, you hate to see this happen to anybody. But she's such a
- 3:17hard worker, she's such a dedicated kid that I'm sure she'll be back even
- 3:23stronger than before, no doubt. Right, what about Janna, we haven't
- 3:29talked much about her. G know, what's your status? And is it
- 3:32just something getting caught up with the knee again? That's that's problematic? Yeah,
- 3:37yeah, it is, and same thing. You know, it goes
- 3:39back to high school. You know, we might have to do a pro
- 3:46style. You know, you have to pass the physical before you you know,
- 3:50before before you before you can offer somebody a scholarship. Right, So
- 3:55it's been something that's been bothering he since tenth grade. And you know,
- 4:00everything that's that you can try has been tried and it works temporarily, but
- 4:06it hasn't hasn't relieved enough of the pain that she could ply. So,
- 4:15Uh, I don't know, We don't know where. You know, we'll
- 4:19know probably more in the next couple of weeks because at some point, you
- 4:24know, right, you're gonna have to You're gonna have to say if there's
- 4:28the time you can't just go indefinitely like this right. Lastly, for our
- 4:33segment, here, today's Today's a tough day for you. One year ago
- 4:38today, your mom passed away and I lost my mom about six months later.
- 4:43But I always think of lines that my mom always used to say to
- 4:45me. My favorite one is I have two hands. I'm using them both,
- 4:48particularly around the holidays. Is there a saying or two that your mom
- 4:51had that you still carry around and use to this day, Well, there's
- 4:59a there's a You know, when you grow up, you can think back
- 5:04to so many things that that your mother probably uh said over and over again,
- 5:13and some made sense, some didn't make sense and you look back now,
- 5:18and she she always tried to remind me too, not get so caught
- 5:28up and all this, you know, and don't don't forget you know what
- 5:35the purpose is. You know. She was so selfless and did so much
- 5:41for other people that she always felt like, that's your purpose. You know,
- 5:45you need to you need to make sure that you keep that in mind,
- 5:49that it's about you know, it's about the people that that you can
- 5:54impact. It's not about you, it's not about what you can get out
- 5:58of it. So that's that's what stuck with me the most. And she
- 6:05shares a birthday with Diana Tarazzi and Maya Moore. That's crazy. Yeah,
- 6:10yeah, that's the Holy Trinity right there. Yes, sir, Gino is
- 6:14always a pleasure. We'll talk to you Sunday. Thank you for your time.
