Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Banning and taxing won't solve the problem
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This week, the Tony Blair Foundation warned to Andy Berman
- 0:02Speaker 1: that Burnham I should say the incoming British Prime Minister
- 0:06Speaker 1: that you can't tax your way to prosperity. Some of
- 0:09Speaker 1: our politicians could probably use a similar lecture. We have
- 0:13Speaker 1: parties wanting new taxes to fund what is basically a
- 0:16Speaker 1: universal basic income, even though AI hasn't yet stolen the
- 0:20Speaker 1: number of jobs that they claimed that it would. In fact,
- 0:22Speaker 1: there's a Wall Street Journal piece out this morning that
- 0:25Speaker 1: talks about exactly this point. Even big tech seems to
- 0:29Speaker 1: be you turning on the job's doomsday scenario that's been
- 0:33Speaker 1: painted for AI. We had the Greens yesterday come out
- 0:36Speaker 1: with that policy that was not serious but potentially quite
- 0:40Speaker 1: destructive to our standard of living. You can read it
- 0:43Speaker 1: on their website. It's four pages long. Two of the
- 0:45Speaker 1: pages of pictures and photos Cows are gone should be
- 0:49Speaker 1: gone capped. Synthetic nitrate fertilizer should be phased out. Bottom
- 0:54Speaker 1: trawling should be banned. Zero detail on when, how, and
- 0:58Speaker 1: the economic impact of doing so in this four pages.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Same goes for bottom trawlings. Seventy percent of our fishing
- 1:06Speaker 1: industry by volumes caught by trawling within a meter of
- 1:08Speaker 1: our sea floor. Did you know that? The industry did
- 1:11Speaker 1: you know? Worth five billion a year sixteen thousand plus jobs.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Dairies our biggest export sixteen billion a year. To try
- 1:18Speaker 1: and take them down is to launch an assault essentially
- 1:22Speaker 1: much like the Chinese on our standard of living, akin
- 1:25Speaker 1: to the doomsday AI job wipeout that was once predicted
- 1:28Speaker 1: to happen but hasn't yet eventuated. On top of this,
- 1:31Speaker 1: there's a plan for more taxes, which, remember even Tony
- 1:35Speaker 1: Blair admits, is no plan for prosperity. The thing about
- 1:39Speaker 1: the Greens the River plan is that the partly right
- 1:44Speaker 1: agricultural runoff has made many rivers unswimmable in New Zealand.
- 1:48Speaker 1: But simply banning and taxing things does not solve problems.
- 1:53Speaker 1: It creates new ones, like how are we going to
- 1:55Speaker 1: feed the kids? Create jobs or stay in the OECD
