- 0:32This is Madeline Ashley with the Becker CFO
- 0:35and revenue cycle podcast, and I'm excited to
- 0:37be joined today by Rebecca Lee, chief strategy
- 0:39and finance officer for Legacy Community Health. Rebecca,
- 0:43thanks for joining me. Yeah. Thank you, Maddie.
- 0:45It's, great to be here with you, especially
- 0:47right before the holidays. I know it. And
- 0:49happy holidays to you. But before we begin,
- 0:52do you mind just sharing a little bit
- 0:54about yourself with our listeners,
- 0:56and more about Legacy Community Health?
- 0:58Yeah. Sure. Well, you've mentioned my name and
- 1:00my title. So what I'll say is I've
- 1:02had the privilege and honor of serving as
- 1:05the chief strategy and financial officer at Legacy
- 1:08for about eighteen months now. And what a
- 1:10ride it's been.
- 1:11I can honestly say,
- 1:13that Legacy Community Health and the work that
- 1:16we do is so amazing.
- 1:18We are the largest federally qualified health center
- 1:20in the state of Texas.
- 1:23We've been doing this for over forty years,
- 1:25serving the greater Houston area in Southeast Texas
- 1:29with over 60 clinics. And,
- 1:31we're getting really close to about 200,000
- 1:34unique patients. So, it really is an honor
- 1:37to be here with you today and sharing
- 1:39a little bit more about myself and legacy.
- 1:41Wonderful. Well, I appreciate you, diving a little
- 1:44bit deeper there. And to kick us off,
- 1:46do you mind just sharing obviously,
- 1:49the health care industry is an ever evolving
- 1:51one. And so with this in mind, could
- 1:53you share some of the broader challenges you're
- 1:55keeping a close
- 1:57close eye on right now and why these
- 1:59are so important for you to keep that
- 2:00that financial,
- 2:01eye on?
- 2:03Yeah. You know, I think it's interesting times
- 2:05that we find ourselves in. And
- 2:07with our focus on health care being a
- 2:09right, you know, rather than a privilege,
- 2:12I think some of the things that we're
- 2:14seeing, you know, like HR one or some
- 2:16of the more legislative things or things that
- 2:18we're keeping a close eye on, ensuring that
- 2:20we can follow that, make sure we understand
- 2:23how it impacts the communities we serve. In
- 2:25addition to that, when we step outside of
- 2:28more of that legislative front and we think
- 2:29about broader challenges in the industry,
- 2:32it's things like cybersecurity
- 2:34and, you know, making sure that we're protecting
- 2:37privacy and and really managing all the challenges
- 2:41in this increasingly electronic world,
- 2:44that we need to keep our eye on
- 2:45and ensure that legacy is at the top
- 2:47of its game when it comes to cyber
- 2:50and privacy.
- 2:51Mhmm. No. Definitely. Some good points there. And
- 2:54could you also share with us just a
- 2:56little bit in terms of how legacy is
- 2:58kind of, you know, deciding right now where
- 3:01to invest in in its revenue cycle?
- 3:03You know, we everywhere I go,
- 3:06every conference, every conversation
- 3:08starts with, you know, the two letters AI.
- 3:11And so I think that's a great part
- 3:14place to start, you know, when we're thinking
- 3:16about where legacy is investing in revenue cycle.
- 3:19We actually implemented Epic a couple of years
- 3:22ago, and so that's really been an enabler
- 3:24for providing more data,
- 3:26being able to leverage things like business intelligence.
- 3:30And as we think about how to continue
- 3:32to optimize in that that realm, we're looking
- 3:34at things that are gonna allow for better
- 3:37indexing. We're gonna be looking for things that
- 3:39are really focused around cash management
- 3:42and allowing for
- 3:44more of the behind the scenes electronically driven
- 3:46reconciliations
- 3:48and allow our team members to really elevate
- 3:50and help us focus in on
- 3:53focus more on denials,
- 3:54focus more on how we can ensure that
- 3:57every penny that we can harvest and bring
- 3:59back into the organization, we can. So for
- 4:01revenue cycle, it's really gonna be about data
- 4:03centricity
- 4:04and leveraging all the technology and tools that
- 4:07are increasingly becoming available.
- 4:10Yeah. I mean, to your point, there are
- 4:12so many tools out there right now. How
- 4:14do you kind of sift through the ones
- 4:15that are going to work best for your
- 4:17organization?
- 4:18I mean, because there's just so much.
- 4:21Yeah. As a, federally qualified health center and
- 4:24being on Epic, we're actually a a connect
- 4:26partner. So that actually gives us a broader,
- 4:29partnership across,
- 4:31multiple FQHCs.
- 4:32We're able to talk through that together and
- 4:34see what's really working best with our instance
- 4:36of Epic.
- 4:38So a lot of it's gonna be around,
- 4:39you know, what fits best and, you know,
- 4:42what's gonna be the best return on investment.
- 4:44So for right now, we're heavily focused in
- 4:48on where is someone by name, by position
- 4:51or role, having to touch pieces of paper,
- 4:53whether it's adding value or not. And so
- 4:54that's gonna be our first area of focus.
- 4:57Yeah. No. Definitely. And, again, amid all of
- 5:00these industry challenges and changes that we're seeing,
- 5:03could you share with our listeners how you're
- 5:05really keeping your finance team resilient and engaged
- 5:08right now? Essentially, what's that secret sauce to
- 5:10success for you?
- 5:12So as I was reading that question and
- 5:14thinking about the secret sauce, you know, I
- 5:16was really thinking about just our blend between
- 5:20mission and business. Yeah.
- 5:22You know, when you go out to one
- 5:24of our clinics, it's not hard to feel
- 5:26the mission and the passion with which we
- 5:28operate.
- 5:29And we actually really encourage all of our
- 5:32teams, no matter what their daily role is,
- 5:35is to really get connected to that mission.
- 5:37So when we're making a decision, when we're
- 5:39navigating a challenge, we are doing it
- 5:43we can actually put a face with that.
- 5:44Right? We can go out. We can see
- 5:46the pregnant women we serve. We can see
- 5:47the children that we serve. We can see
- 5:49the seniors,
- 5:50anybody that's out there receiving services from us.
- 5:53And so our finance team really embodies that.
- 5:55And so that goes a long way in
- 5:56maintaining that resiliency.
- 5:58We have had some challenging times. Right? Health
- 6:01care is not an easy industry, and it,
- 6:04you know, continues to be a challenging world.
- 6:07So what we've really focused on with our
- 6:09finance teams is really also data centricity,
- 6:12that there's power in the story that the
- 6:14numbers tell us. And that if they can
- 6:16be a part of helping us tell that
- 6:18story quicker, faster, better,
- 6:21that it really does have these very specific
- 6:24health care related outcomes, community related outcomes. And
- 6:28we really see that embodied in how they
- 6:29operate.
- 6:31Yeah. And I mean, you you touched on
- 6:32at the beginning of the podcast. You've been
- 6:34in your role here for about eighteen months.
- 6:37You know, just in general, could you share
- 6:39maybe how the CFO role is evolving beyond
- 6:41just finances and maybe some of the most
- 6:44important leadership skills that finance leaders can hone
- 6:47in on right now?
- 6:48The two that jump out to me the
- 6:50most is
- 6:51really being a storyteller.
- 6:54You know, as a little bit of a
- 6:55joke here, you know, I remember one time
- 6:57I had
- 6:58someone tell me, hey. You're a CFO. You
- 7:00must really love numbers. And I kinda joked
- 7:02and I laughed and I said, well, I
- 7:03don't know about love numbers,
- 7:05but there's a story to be told. Right?
- 7:07And sometimes the numbers are part of that
- 7:09story. And so I really think being a
- 7:11storyteller and in order to be a storyteller,
- 7:13you have to understand what's going on. You
- 7:16have to be able to see the pieces,
- 7:18how they fit together, you know, who's in
- 7:20that story,
- 7:21and then really go forward with genuine curiosity.
- 7:23So when I think about leadership skills, I
- 7:25think it doesn't matter what your technical expertise
- 7:27is or your background. If you go into
- 7:29anything with genuine curiosity,
- 7:31you're gonna come out
- 7:33much more engaged,
- 7:34much more collaborative,
- 7:36and much more aligned in what you're gonna
- 7:38do going forward. And so I think that
- 7:40blend between strategy and finance, being focused on
- 7:44the future,
- 7:45but not losing touch with the current reality,
- 7:47I think is
- 7:48really what's allowing CFOs overall to evolve beyond
- 7:51the financials and really begin
- 7:53to harvest and harness those broader leadership skills.
- 7:57Yeah. The financial the the numbers are important,
- 7:59but there's such a bigger story to be
- 8:01told here. So, yeah, some strong insights there.
- 8:04Final question for you. As as we mentioned,
- 8:06it it is near the holidays,
- 8:08right around the corner, and we're heading into
- 8:102026.
- 8:11Anything you're particularly
- 8:13excited about right now at your organization or
- 8:15just for the future of healthcare?
- 8:17You know, when I think about, you know,
- 8:20the holidays, when I think about what we're
- 8:22able to do,
- 8:24we also have a couple of new clinics
- 8:26opening up next calendar year and so we
- 8:29are not sitting still. So amidst whatever challenges
- 8:32there are, there is a massive need to
- 8:34be met. And so we're really excited
- 8:36to just continue that reach,
- 8:38all throughout the greater scenario in Southeast Texas.
- 8:41Well, that's so great to hear. Well, Rebecca,
- 8:43it has truly been such a pleasure getting
- 8:45to touch base with you and talk a
- 8:47little bit, wishing you a wonderful holiday, and
- 8:49I look forward to connecting again sometime soon.
- 8:52Thank you, Maddie. It's been a pleasure being
- 8:54here. Thank you.
