Latest / Mount Eaton Church / Jesus' Prayer part 3 - John 17
Transcript
- 0:00Good morning and happy New Year family.
- 0:17Turn to John 17 if you would.
- 0:22It has been truly an amazing year so far and I am just so thankful for God's faithfulness
- 0:32to us.
- 0:36We as a family have gone through quite a bit in growth and still more things to come.
- 0:44I will tell you we are excited about the business meeting coming up and I will tell you the
- 0:52Constitution team is working diligently to work through that document and everything
- 1:00in that document will be supported with the scripture.
- 1:04So I think you are going to be very pleased with it, the diligence and the work that we
- 1:08have been putting in.
- 1:10So be prayerful about that, it has to be biblical, it has to be consistent with God's word.
- 1:18It will not supersede the word of God but it will absolutely support the word of God
- 1:24and help us to govern as a church the way the word says we should.
- 1:31In addition to that we have gone through six weeks on prayer and we are finally at the
- 1:40end and I will tell you I really enjoyed this message and really enjoyed just reading through
- 1:48and studying this.
- 1:51I hope that when it is all said and done you will walk away with a deeper understanding
- 1:57of prayer and the importance of it.
- 2:01So let's pray and let's jump in.
- 2:03Father I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 2:06Thank you Lord for your word.
- 2:07To you be honor and glory forever, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
- 2:12Lord you have given us and have prayed for us all that we need and Lord I pray that as
- 2:21we walk through the ending of this prayer that we get the importance of what you are
- 2:28saying through it.
- 2:30There is a common theme, a heartbeat of this prayer and it reveals your heart for your
- 2:37people and it reveals the heart of your purpose.
- 2:42And Lord we praise you and we thank you in Jesus name, Amen.
- 2:46Alright so we are going to go through a little bit just to kind of refresh you since we have
- 2:52been off this for a little bit two weeks now.
- 2:56The doctrine of prayer is a means of grace offered according to the will of God expressed
- 3:02in accordance with his word.
- 3:04Prayer is the language of the soul and opening of our hearts before God, John Calvin.
- 3:11Prayer reveals our hearts.
- 3:13Prayer is about aligning ourselves with God's will, Matthew 26, 36.
- 3:18Ukamai is the word used, cross meaning to come near or to come before, ukamai means
- 3:27to pray or to will.
- 3:30Praying is not an isolated spirit of exercise as if we pray and we live in two different
- 3:36components.
- 3:37The truth of the matter is we live as we pray and we pray as we live, Dr. Sinclair Ferguson.
- 3:44As I've said previously that this prayer in chapter 17 is broken up into three divisions.
- 3:49It's divided into three parts.
- 3:51The first part of the prayer, chapter 17, one through five, Jesus prays for his glory
- 3:58and the glory of the father.
- 4:01These five verses are about the dox adzo, to make, renown, render illustrious, to cause
- 4:09the dignity or work of a person or thing to become manifest and acknowledged, specifically
- 4:17to dox adzo of the Godhead.
- 4:21In John 17, six through nine, Jesus prayed for the disciples who were given the task
- 4:27to continue the ministry of reconciliation.
- 4:30He prays that they will dox adzo him, which in turn dox adzos the father, that they will
- 4:39make him renown through the gospel and that they will continue in the word and deed of
- 4:47the gospel.
- 4:48And that is verses eight, 14 through 19.
- 4:52In John 17, 20 through 26, Jesus prays for the believers all to come after the disciples,
- 5:00which we are among them.
- 5:03The same promises given to those who walk with him are ours also.
- 5:10The same dox adzo that Christ prays for himself, the father, the disciples, and all those after,
- 5:17for all of you and for those to come is your dox adzo.
- 5:24Christ is made renowned through our lives and as a result, we bring him glory as he
- 5:30glories in us.
- 5:33So I want us to oversee this little bit of John 17, 13 through 19 so we can kind of understand
- 5:42why he says what he says in 23, 26.
- 5:47So verse 13 says, but now I am coming to you and these things I speak in the world that
- 5:55they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
- 6:00I have given them your word and the world has hated them.
- 6:09The world has pursued them with hatred and the world detests them.
- 6:18And the same hatred and the test that the world had for the disciples, the world has
- 6:25for me.
- 6:28Now this word that's coming up, I want you to pay attention to it.
- 6:34It says, because they are not of the world just as I am not of the world.
- 6:40Pretty simple.
- 6:41This is not your home.
- 6:44This is your journey.
- 6:47Then he says in verse 15 with an absolute negative, I do not ask that you take them
- 6:54out of the world, but that you keep, that you tend carefully, that you guard, that you
- 7:02shepherd them, he's talking to the father, from evil.
- 7:08That's the translation there.
- 7:11Translation, van Eras is not evil one.
- 7:16There are a couple commentaries that say based on a, I think historical, based on some references
- 7:28to the evil one and how they use the word evil, that some of the commentaries would
- 7:37say that it's talking about Satan, the evil one.
- 7:41The problem is it doesn't fit the context of the prayer.
- 7:46In all of the prayer, he says we're not of the world just as he's not of the world.
- 7:51The world hates us, the world detests us, and then all of a sudden he just out of the
- 7:56blue says keep them from the evil one.
- 7:59That's not, that makes no contextual sense whatsoever.
- 8:05But there are some translations in and some of the other commentaries that say it's actually
- 8:12evil, which makes sense because when you read the Lord's prayer, it means the same thing,
- 8:23that he would keep us from hardship and harassment and trouble and perils of faith.
- 8:30So that's where it is, keep them from evil, not keep them from the evil one.
- 8:35How do we know that?
- 8:36Because not only does he say we're not of the world, then turns around in the very next
- 8:40statement after he says keep them from evil, they are not of the world just as I am not
- 8:47of the world.
- 8:48So context clearly states that this is evil, not Satan.
- 8:56Sanctify them in the truth, the word is truth, which is interesting and supports my idea
- 9:03continually in this idea of it being evil.
- 9:06Why?
- 9:07Because the only way to overcome harassment and hardships and trouble and perils of faith
- 9:13is to be in the truth.
- 9:18Verse 18, as you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world and for their
- 9:25sake I consecrate myself that they also may be sanctified in truth.
- 9:33The only way to go into the world with confidence is to know that God has your back.
- 9:41So as we move into the last part of this wonderful, beautiful prayer, you kind of understand why
- 9:51he says this for those to come.
- 9:56This is that part where he's praying for those after the disciples, for us and for those
- 10:04to still come.
- 10:07First principle number one, the electing work of Christ is for the gospel alone.
- 10:13I want you to get this very important statement.
- 10:18The election, the doctrine of election, there is no gospel.
- 10:26You're like, well, that's a definitive statement.
- 10:30It is.
- 10:32Because the whole point of grace is to give unto a person something they do not deserve
- 10:38nor can they earn.
- 10:42Has nothing to do with your ability or your thought or your brain or your free will.
- 10:48It has everything to do with God and God alone.
- 10:50But the work of the gospel of Christ concerning the electing work of God, it's for the gospel.
- 10:57It makes the gospel sure.
- 11:00Jesus prays for his own so that the world may know that he alone is the savior of his
- 11:08people.
- 11:09John 17, 23, 21 says this, I do not ask for these only, meaning the disciples, but for
- 11:19those who will believe in me through their word.
- 11:23How do we know that?
- 11:24For faith comes from hearing and hearing that of the word of Christ.
- 11:27That's what this means.
- 11:30That the gospel being preached will bring the gift of faith to the heart of the elect.
- 11:37Now verse 21 says that they may all be one just as you, Father, or in me and I in you.
- 11:48And they also may be in us so that the world may believe that you sent me.
- 11:54So there it is.
- 11:55The electing work of God is a direct result of the gospel alone.
- 12:01So I think you're going to start to see the theme here.
- 12:03What's interesting about verse 20 says I do not ask for these alone, but for those who
- 12:08will believe.
- 12:09I like to clarify by taking out a definitive statement and showing you another definitive
- 12:19statement within this.
- 12:21I do ask for those who will believe in me through their word.
- 12:28So not only does he not ask for the disciples only, but he specifically asks for you.
- 12:37Interesting.
- 12:39Verse 22 and 23.
- 12:43Principle number two, Jesus prays for our conformity in him and our unity of faith.
- 12:50He prays for our conformity in him and our unity of faith.
- 12:54Just as Jesus and the Father are perfectly united, he prays that we too will be united
- 13:00together in him, in his glory for the gospel.
- 13:05How do you see all that?
- 13:08Here it is.
- 13:09Verse 22.
- 13:10The glory that you have given me, I have given to them that they may be one even as we are
- 13:20one.
- 13:23First thing you need to notice here, this word glory is daksa.
- 13:28It's the root word for daksa, but this word is daksa.
- 13:35This word daksa literally means perfect inward or personal excellency of Christ.
- 13:42The perfect excellency of Christ or the personal excellency of Christ.
- 13:49The majesty of Christ.
- 13:51Now let's read that a little differently so we can kind of understand what he's talking
- 13:55about here.
- 13:56Because ultimately what we do know is that he has predestined us before the foundation
- 14:01of the world to be conformed into the image of his son.
- 14:06That's the whole point.
- 14:07That's why he's praying this.
- 14:08That the daksa of Christ will be in us because he is actually the glory that you have given
- 14:22me, the personal excellency, the perfect inward excellency, the majesty that I have that has
- 14:31been given to me, I give to them.
- 14:36That they may be one even as we are one.
- 14:39That the whole point of the glory of Christ in us is so that we would be united together
- 14:45with him according to his word and his gospel.
- 14:50Here we go.
- 14:53That they may be one as we are one.
- 14:55I in them and you in me.
- 15:00I want you to hear this, that they may become perfectly one.
- 15:06I in them and you in me.
- 15:09What scripture is this?
- 15:10What doctrine is this?
- 15:11This doctrine is called eternal security.
- 15:16That if we are in Christ, in Christ as in the Father, there is nothing that can separate
- 15:23us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
- 15:26Neither death nor life nor anything else.
- 15:28No angel nor demon.
- 15:30We are in Christ forever.
- 15:33And Christ says not only are you in me but you are in the Father which I am in because
- 15:38you are in me, I am in him.
- 15:40That's like a double lockdown.
- 15:44I mean it's kind of hard to get rid of that isn't it?
- 15:48So why do we avoid this issue of eternal security?
- 15:52This is not a statement of once say, no he said.
- 15:55This is a statement of once truly converted, you will stay converted and you are his forever.
- 16:00There is a difference between once say, no he said.
- 16:04It's a Baptist statement, how do you know?
- 16:09Because I was a Baptist.
- 16:11Where I got ordained.
- 16:13And then God taught truth.
- 16:19There it is.
- 16:22So I in them and you in me.
- 16:26And they may become perfectly one.
- 16:27How in the world can God's people be perfectly one when they can't even agree on anything
- 16:32now?
- 16:35Well here's the answer.
- 16:37This is what causes us to be perfectly one as he and the Father are one.
- 16:43So that the world may know that you sent me and love them even as you love me.
- 16:53What's that called?
- 16:54The Gospel.
- 16:55You wonder why the church today is not united?
- 17:00Why we're not one?
- 17:01We can't even agree on the simple reality of the Gospel.
- 17:06That the God of all creation put on flesh, died on the cross, was buried and rose again
- 17:12on the third day.
- 17:13No, we got a message of say this prayer, welcome to the family.
- 17:21We can't agree on anything.
- 17:23To be honest with you, I listened to a message.
- 17:29You know how to say something.
- 17:32I listened to a message this week and the Gospel was narrowed down as a hallmark meeting.
- 17:41Like if it was a romance.
- 17:44I'm like are we serious?
- 17:48Have we really lost the point of Christ?
- 17:52The God who created you and died on the cross is not a romance.
- 17:57It's not a hallmark meeting.
- 18:02I mean, let me get off the sofa.
- 18:11Oh boy.
- 18:13We wonder why we can't be united.
- 18:15We can't be united because we can't unite on one thing.
- 18:20The importance of the Gospel which is the most important thing.
- 18:24Because you know why?
- 18:27We're not being conformed into the image of Christ.
- 18:29We're trying to make the church in the image what we want it to be.
- 18:33We're conforming the church into their own image.
- 18:40One of the reasons why I'm so thankful for the men that we serve with, that I serve with.
- 18:49As believers, brothers, for the Gospel.
- 18:58Christ paid for his church, not my church, it's his church.
- 19:05Principle number three.
- 19:06Jesus prays that his people will be with him where he is.
- 19:12Let not your hearts be troubled.
- 19:14Believe in God.
- 19:15Believe also in me.
- 19:16In my Father's house are many rooms.
- 19:18If we're not so, I would have told you that I go to prepare a place for you.
- 19:22And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself
- 19:27that where I am, you may be also.
- 19:30John 14, one through three.
- 19:33Listen to this statement.
- 19:34In one verse, Jesus in one statement in his prayer summarizes everything that I just read.
- 19:44Where I desire that they also whom you have given me may be with me where I am.
- 19:56To see my glory that you have given me because you love me before the foundation of the world.
- 20:03Man, that's literally one verse, one statement, and what do we get?
- 20:08A whole mess of doctrine.
- 20:11The doctrine of election, the doctrine of eternal security, the doctrine of the perseverance
- 20:17of the saints, the doctrine of sanctification, the doctrine of the second return of Christ
- 20:25or the coming of Christ.
- 20:27Sorry.
- 20:28The second coming of Christ.
- 20:30Oh my goodness.
- 20:32So much here in this one little verse.
- 20:34This word desire, first of all, I want to clarify here.
- 20:39Thilo or thilo, this word is not desire as you guys would think desire to be.
- 20:45This is not something like I desire.
- 20:51This word desire literally means to be resolved, determined, or to purpose.
- 20:58Now father, I resolve, determine, and purpose that they, meaning us, whom you have given
- 21:09me, meaning he gave us to him, not that you gave yourself to Jesus.
- 21:17Maybe with me where I am, that where he is, that we will go also.
- 21:24Why?
- 21:25So that we may see his glory, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me
- 21:32before the foundation of the world.
- 21:35What an amazing statement.
- 21:37Can you see all those doctors that I just mentioned in one statement?
- 21:43That his resolve, his determination, he has determined, he has purpose that we will be
- 21:49with him.
- 21:52Wow.
- 21:55It reminds me of Bible verse in 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 concerning our gathering together
- 22:07to him and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 22:10I know you, I have no need to write you.
- 22:13No, the resistance is a guarantee.
- 22:21Father, I have no need to write you.
- 22:29Father, I have no need to write you.
- 22:36Know the love of the great God and King, John 17, 25, 26.
- 23:01Where means father.
- 23:09I'm so scared to say it.
- 23:10It's going to ruin it.
- 23:13Dekias.
- 23:14Dekias.
- 23:15I think that's how you say it.
- 23:18Dekias.
- 23:19I'm hoping I said it right, Lord, please forgive me if I didn't because it totally lost my
- 23:26brain and I can't even remember how to say it.
- 23:29It's so terrible.
- 23:30Okay, this word literally means, oh, righteous father, the father who is the perfect judge.
- 23:39So this word, Dekias, means perfect judge, passing just judgment on all.
- 23:49Now when you see, when you read this, oh, righteous father, what it means is the father
- 23:54who judges rightly.
- 23:58Now think about that because right after that statement, he says, even though the world
- 24:04does not know you, I know you.
- 24:07And these know that you have sent me.
- 24:10You are the one who judges perfectly.
- 24:15Even though the world has rejected you, doesn't know you, doesn't want you.
- 24:21You in your righteous judgment have given me people that do know you.
- 24:30Why?
- 24:31Because these know that you sent me.
- 24:34Who?
- 24:35Us.
- 24:36How do we know?
- 24:41How do we know that Christ was sent?
- 24:44How do we know the father?
- 24:46How has Jesus made the father known to us through the gospel?
- 24:52Here it is, verse 26.
- 24:53I made known to them your name and will continue to make it known.
- 25:03Isn't that interesting?
- 25:06How is Christ going to make the father's name known and continue to make the father's name
- 25:11known through the work of the gospel?
- 25:15Look at this word, the word that.
- 25:20This word that means intent or the purpose of or the result of.
- 25:26How does he make the name of God known?
- 25:30Through the love with which you have loved me may be in them and I in you.
- 25:37The gospel here.
- 25:40What's the theme here?
- 25:41What is the common theme of the end of this amazing prayer?
- 25:46His final declaration is that the world may believe, verse 21, that the world may know,
- 25:53verse 23, that I made your name known and that I will continue to make it known, verse
- 26:0126.
- 26:02For the gospel is why he prayed.
- 26:05For the gospel is for and to whom he prayed.
- 26:09For the gospel is what he prayed.
- 26:11His prayer of where he is and others and where we are going is a direct result of the gospel.
- 26:21How he prayed was for the gospel.
- 26:25The whole purpose of his prayer is not only to declare all the things that he just finished
- 26:32teaching them from chapter 13 all the way to 16.
- 26:36But to declare his purpose for them, the gospel.
- 26:42There is no other purpose for the church.
- 26:45That is her purpose.
- 26:47That is your purpose individually.
- 26:52So let me clarify what I read to you earlier.
- 26:57Prayer is a means of grace offered according to the will of God expressed in accordance
- 27:02with his word.
- 27:03Prayer was the language of his soul, an opening of his heart before the Father.
- 27:11Prayer reveals his heart or revealed his heart.
- 27:16Prayer was about aligning himself with the Father's will.
- 27:23Cross bukhumi to come near and to pray according to the will of the Father was his purpose.
- 27:33Prayer is not an isolated spiritual exercise as if we pray or we live in two different
- 27:38components.
- 27:39The truth of the matter is we live as we pray and we pray as we live.
- 27:43Jesus did pray as he lived and lived as he prayed.
- 27:51Wonder why we struggle with our prayer life.
- 27:55We made prayer out to be a ritual instead of a moment of worship and aligning ourselves.
- 28:08It's one thing to go and pray and just say things because we feel like we have to.
- 28:14It's another to come before our holy God and go, Lord, I just want to be in line with you.
- 28:21I want to know you and your will according to your word.
- 28:25I want the words that I speak be according to your word, not what I want, what you want.
- 28:38Prayer is so very important.
- 28:40What do we remember out of all this past six weeks?
- 28:46That when we look at the model of prayer, we see Jesus' model even in John 17, except
- 28:54for one part.
- 28:56He gave us in the model that's just for you and I.
- 29:00Let me explain it to you.
- 29:02Exultation in prayer, praise, verse one through five, surrender.
- 29:10The I am in you and you are in me.
- 29:14The kingdom comes is the idea.
- 29:17Ask, he prayed for his disciples and prayed for you.
- 29:21He calls us to repent.
- 29:23Jesus didn't need to repent.
- 29:25So when you read the Lord's prayer, it's not really the Lord repenting.
- 29:30This is God's model prayer.
- 29:32It's the only thing in this particular prayer that is for you and you alone because you
- 29:38cannot align your will with God's will until you deal with the issue of your sin.
- 29:46Petition.
- 29:48We would be kept guarded from evil.
- 29:55Petition.
- 29:56Lastly, it's all according to your name.
- 30:03God is exalted and praised.
- 30:06There is that beautiful little model that Jesus did in every prayer.
- 30:13Very simple way to pray.
- 30:17So I pray that you have enjoyed this series of prayer that you will commit to aligning
- 30:26your will and your heart according to his word.
- 30:32I know that if you do, you will be blessed.
- 30:39Last statement.
- 30:40Jesus prayed.
- 30:42Jesus did pray as he lived and lived as he prayed.
- 30:46Father, I want to thank you so much for your favor for this.
- 30:48Thank you Lord for your word.
- 30:49Thank you for your goodness.
- 30:52Thank you that you are the God of all creation and there is none like you.
- 30:58Thank you for these amazing doctrines.
- 31:01The truth that is saturated through your prayer.
- 31:04The beauty of your prayer for your people.
- 31:09Not only the disciples, but for the people who work to come and even for those who are
- 31:14going to come after us.
- 31:15Help us Lord to walk intimately in your word.
- 31:19Be consistent in prayer and to honor you in all things in Jesus name.
