- 0:04- Hello and welcome to the Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:07I'm Olivia.
- 0:09- And I'm Shauna.
- 0:10- And we are back with another special episode.
- 0:14Shana and I are fresh off of Pride Weekend,
- 0:18having a simply lovely time.
- 0:20And so before we get into today's episode,
- 0:23I just wanna take you on a little adventure with us.
- 0:27- Shana, how was your first
- 0:29San Francisco Pride?
- 0:31- It was so much fun.
- 0:34Yes, it was a wonderful weekend.
- 0:36We have plans for next year too
- 0:38to actually go to the parade, I think.
- 0:39But I'm okay that we missed it this year
- 0:41because we just went, we saw a drag,
- 0:44we just have multiple drag queens.
- 0:46Lots of drag artists.
- 0:48We went to a punk rock drag show.
- 0:50We were married.
- 0:51It was a lovely weekend.
- 0:53And the weather was just gorgeous.
- 0:56Lots of whimsy.
- 0:58- Very whimsical weekend.
- 1:00- Whimsical weekend.
- 1:02- Yeah, it was so fun.
- 1:03So you guys have probably heard me talk about it before,
- 1:06but I go to this bar all the time in my neighborhood.
- 1:09It's like a punk bar.
- 1:11And every single time Shana has been in town,
- 1:14they do not actually have a punk or a metal or a rock show
- 1:19going on.
- 1:21It's always like a DJ event.
- 1:23- It was like a live night one night, which was fun.
- 1:26But, or disco, I'm like, didn't you say multiple times
- 1:29as this is a punk rock bar?
- 1:30- Yeah.
- 1:31- I'm like a promise.
- 1:32And then it was so fun.
- 1:34We were front row the whole time.
- 1:37- Yeah, it was front row.
- 1:38- The drive queens and kings were lovely.
- 1:42They were amazing.
- 1:43And so it was really just such a fun event.
- 1:46And then yeah, we took Shana and Stephanie to Dolores
- 1:49for Sunday.
- 1:50We did miss the parade, but the parade is quite crazy.
- 1:54And there was a lot going on on Sunday.
- 1:55So we really just avoided paying a lot of money for Ubers.
- 1:59- Right, we really did good.
- 2:01And then Olivia and I, I have to put this on the Instagram
- 2:04for pop culture junkie.
- 2:05While we were at Dolores Park, we did a wig snatching competition
- 2:09where we both had these wigs on and then tried to like
- 2:12pluck them off the other person's head as fast as possible.
- 2:16And we perfectly tied.
- 2:18Like 100% not.
- 2:19- And that's on being best friends, you know?
- 2:21- Right.
- 2:22It was great.
- 2:23But yeah, it was so fun.
- 2:24Olivia bought a great Buffy looking jacket.
- 2:27- Yeah.
- 2:28- It was a great coat.
- 2:29- It was, it was a very drunk convinced purchase.
- 2:32Like you need this and it really did.
- 2:35I do need that time.
- 2:36- I'll give you half of the money for that right now.
- 2:39And you were like, I'm an independent woman.
- 2:40I can buy myself a coat.
- 2:42- I don't need a Shana or a man.
- 2:44I'm gonna pay for it myself.
- 2:45- You need a Shana.
- 2:47- I do need a Shana.
- 2:48- But not a man or a Shana to buy you a coat.
- 2:51- I don't need Shana's money.
- 2:53But yeah, it was so fun.
- 2:55- Honestly, it was deeply healing.
- 2:57- Yeah.
- 2:58- And you know, we always love when we can be together
- 3:00and have a silly goofy time.
- 3:02On Sunday we were like, I'm so sad you're leaving.
- 3:05But at least we get to record on Tuesday.
- 3:07- I know.
- 3:08I didn't want to leave.
- 3:09I went home though and I got into bed
- 3:12and I had the worst heartburn of all time.
- 3:15I was just like groaning in bed.
- 3:18Just an android washed the sheets.
- 3:20But of course not put them back on the bed.
- 3:22Like of course that.
- 3:24- It's so absolutely creepy.
- 3:26- Forrest all with a fitted sheet.
- 3:28I'm just like, oh yeah.
- 3:29- That is actually the worst crime of all time.
- 3:32You're like hungover trying to get like the corner to stick.
- 3:35- Yeah.
- 3:36It was just my heartburn.
- 3:38It was just like too old.
- 3:40- And that's what drinking age.
- 3:42- And that's what drinking age.
- 3:43- Yes, eating and drinking when you're 37
- 3:46just a wild abandon.
- 3:49But that's okay.
- 3:50It was not the heartburn.
- 3:52It was.
- 3:53It was.
- 3:54And it was a simply lovely time.
- 3:56And so if you've never been to San Francisco,
- 4:00might I suggest coming during Pride?
- 4:03It is just like an electric time.
- 4:06Everyone runs around just saying happy Pride.
- 4:08Everyone's so happy.
- 4:10- Everyone's so nice.
- 4:12- Yeah.
- 4:12And everyone's so nice and gay.
- 4:15- It's so beautiful.
- 4:15- And both of the words.
- 4:16- It's up to the word.
- 4:17- Yeah.
- 4:18- Well, I have a gay old time.
- 4:21- Let's get.
- 4:22- There she goes.
- 4:23There she goes.
- 4:24She has to whip it out every other episode.
- 4:26Old timey gay.
- 4:27Old timey gay.
- 4:29- She's an old timey gay.
- 4:30(laughing)
- 4:31- She's an old timeer gay.
- 4:33I do love meeting an elder gay when I'm out.
- 4:36They're just apart like a sense of wisdom onto me
- 4:39that sometimes I feel like I need.
- 4:41And so yeah, we love that.
- 4:43Real time gay, elder gay, whatever type of gay.
- 4:46We love you.
- 4:47And we love the gay.
- 4:48- Pride month.
- 4:50And this is gonna come out after Pride month.
- 4:51So you can just listen to this.
- 4:52- That's okay.
- 4:53- I'm just the gay month.
- 4:55- I'm just the gay.
- 4:56- Yeah, it's your bifobic if you don't listen
- 4:58to pop culture junkie.
- 4:59(laughing)
- 5:00- But yeah, we wanted to just kind of recap a little bit.
- 5:03I'm a fun weekend.
- 5:06And to segue in, we're gonna actually talk about
- 5:10not as light topic.
- 5:13We wanted to talk a little bit about what is going on
- 5:17in pop culture, what we're seeing
- 5:19from some of our favorite celebrities
- 5:22and the rapid decline in their weight.
- 5:26- And so, you know, really, as I say this,
- 5:30I'm sure there's going to be a celebrity
- 5:32that comes to mind that has been a little bit
- 5:36in the zeitgeist right now or the conversation.
- 5:40- Let's do a quick trigger warning.
- 5:42We are gonna be talking about bodies,
- 5:44body positivity, rapid weight loss eating disorders.
- 5:48This is not to say no matter what size you are,
- 5:51if you are thin, larger, anything in between,
- 5:54you are perfect and beautiful.
- 5:55But we can't deny what we're seeing with our own eyes
- 5:59that thin is becoming a trend again.
- 6:02- Yes, and you know, we see this every couple of decades.
- 6:06This ideal body type really comes back in fashion magazines
- 6:10and celebrity swings and the rise of fascism.
- 6:14We often see this body type coming back.
- 6:18100%.
- 6:19And really it is just this sense of like control, right?
- 6:23And you know, in the 1920s, we had the flappers,
- 6:26the 1960s, brought us petite models like Twiggy
- 6:30and in the 90s and 2000s, which is what, you know,
- 6:33Sean and I grew up in.
- 6:35We saw the rise of heroin chic.
- 6:37So we had Kate Moss saying things like nothing.
- 6:41- Tastes as good as skinny feels.
- 6:44- Yes, nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.
- 6:46I definitely like heard that quote when I was going
- 6:49through puberty and such.
- 6:51Yeah, and was like, she's right.
- 6:53She's right.
- 6:54Like those things just stick with you so hard.
- 6:57And like seeing all of the celebrities that we were told
- 7:01were overweight and then looking back at them now
- 7:03and being like, oh my God, she was a size six.
- 7:07Like, I mean, we just all watched.
- 7:09- Yeah, like the Jessica Simpson cover of her
- 7:12at that like state fair or whatever.
- 7:15- She's in those high-waisted jeans.
- 7:17- Oh, she was literally such a bitch.
- 7:19- And if you grew up in that era and you remember
- 7:21that cover and being like, she's a fat cow.
- 7:24And then now it's like people got it
- 7:25and it's like, oh my God, she looks like she's eating.
- 7:28Like what do you mean?
- 7:29- You were owed financial compensation.
- 7:30- Yeah.
- 7:31- You really truly were.
- 7:33- I think of Britney Spears during her,
- 7:36what was it 2007 performance at the VMAs?
- 7:39She was obviously going through other things at that time,
- 7:42but people were ripping her to shreds saying she was fat.
- 7:44She was absolutely not.
- 7:46And even if she was who fucking cares.
- 7:48But it's just like the, and Renee Zellweger
- 7:53and Bridget Jones die every.
- 7:55- Oh my God, that actually still traumatizes me to this day
- 7:59because did you know that she went from 100 pounds
- 8:03to 120 pounds and they were talking about it
- 8:07like she doubled in size.
- 8:09It was actually insane.
- 8:12And she looks damn good in that movie.
- 8:15- Literally.
- 8:16- Like, even though she's gained so much weight,
- 8:18you're like, no, she's body tea, body tea.
- 8:21- Body tea and one of the like ongoing plots of the movies
- 8:25that she's just so fat, like, are you kidding me?
- 8:28We think of Kate Winslet and Titanic.
- 8:30There was so much discussion around the way
- 8:32that her body looked in that movie
- 8:34and that she was too large for Leo.
- 8:38It's just all of these things that were just stuck
- 8:40into our minds during such a formative time in our lives.
- 8:44And now teenage girls are getting that again
- 8:46'cause big yeses come back around and is in style again.
- 8:51- Yeah, and I think that we wanted to talk about this.
- 8:53Of course, like, you know, as Shonda mentioned,
- 8:56like every body type is beautiful.
- 8:58And we are so passionate about this topic
- 9:01because we really went through that, right?
- 9:04And just the experience of being a woman
- 9:07and growing up and going through kind of that,
- 9:10that level of media consumption where everyone is so skinny,
- 9:14it's all you see, like it really is quite damaging.
- 9:17I think in my younger years, I was quite naturally thin.
- 9:21And as I aged like a normal person,
- 9:24that really went away.
- 9:25And so as I went into my late 20s, my early 30s,
- 9:30like I didn't realize how much that had impacted me personally
- 9:35because I was like, oh, well, I'm thin, right?
- 9:37And then you move into this
- 9:38and it really is just so pervasive.
- 9:41And then now it's coming back and you're equally triggered.
- 9:44- I totally agree.
- 9:45That was like the same experience for me.
- 9:47I was always the super thin girl
- 9:49and I was like, oh, this kind of comes naturally to me.
- 9:52And then what'd you know of it?
- 9:54You'd move into your 30s and your metabolism slows down
- 9:57and it's harder to just maintain natural thinness, right?
- 10:01Like the way that people would just, you know,
- 10:04tell us on social media that we're supposed to be, right?
- 10:07Or those little voices coming to our head
- 10:09that we remember of like, remember that size six is huge.
- 10:12Like they said it in the Devil Wears product.
- 10:15They said it in that movie that used to watch.
- 10:17You look like Jessica Simpson on that cover
- 10:19of the blah, blah, blah.
- 10:20And you're like, well, I was taught that was bad.
- 10:24- Yeah.
- 10:25And it's really quite crazy how much that level of media
- 10:30can stick with you even if you're like,
- 10:32well, I don't ascribed that.
- 10:33I don't think in that way.
- 10:34But then that little voice comes into your own head
- 10:37when you start looking at yourself and your body changing.
- 10:40And you know, say what you want about the Kardashians.
- 10:43I think that one thing that they did bring to us
- 10:46was the idea that volumptuous people
- 10:49could be incredibly sexy and moving into that.
- 10:52And I think that one of the scariest things
- 10:55about seeing the swing back is even they have, you know,
- 11:00gone down the skinny trend of like,
- 11:03I don't give there too much credit for that.
- 11:05Because I think that they were,
- 11:08their bodies were definitely like the go to, right?
- 11:12And like the mid 2010s, like all of a sudden
- 11:16it was huge boobs, huge butt, but still a tiny waist.
- 11:20So it's like, we never see that real representation
- 11:22of like actual volumptuous women
- 11:25'cause there's always still like a perfectly flat stomach, right?
- 11:28But no, I get what you're saying, like, you know,
- 11:30in Jennifer Lopez and you know,
- 11:32and the body positivity movement came.
- 11:34And you know, Lizzo came around,
- 11:36we won't talk too much about the positive she is.
- 11:39But you know what I mean, but yeah, now all this sudden
- 11:43the Kardashians are real thin too.
- 11:45And also pushing how they lost all that weight.
- 11:49Well, they got to tell us the truth.
- 11:51(laughing)
- 11:52It was just a waste trainer.
- 11:53I do Pilates for 20 minutes every day.
- 11:56Yes, yeah, oh gosh, I wish I wish they could get me there.
- 12:00No, I don't, I love how I love that.
- 12:02You know, see, it's getting me, getting me.
- 12:04But you know, largely over the last few years,
- 12:07we started to see this return to thinness
- 12:11and how it is so pervasive.
- 12:14And largely we have seen kind of this rise of skin and culture
- 12:17come back within two ways.
- 12:20We've seen it a lot with GLP ones.
- 12:22I mean, like I will say, the second I turned 30,
- 12:25I started getting two sets of ads, Botox and GLP ones, right?
- 12:29Yes.
- 12:30And extremely pervasive thing advertised to women.
- 12:35I mean, it started when I turned 30,
- 12:38the medicine came out then.
- 12:39So I'm sure it's even going to younger and younger.
- 12:42And it's an easy way to do it.
- 12:44And I think that the medication itself
- 12:46really does have positive impacts
- 12:48to a certain group of people.
- 12:50Yeah, we're not talking shit about anyone on a GLP one.
- 12:53Like this is an actual medication.
- 12:55Lots of people like use it for medical reasons.
- 12:58And even if you use it to lose weight,
- 12:59that is whatever your business is, is your business.
- 13:03It's just like that all of a sudden this kind of like,
- 13:07like you said, easier way to lose weight,
- 13:10very effective way to lose weight comes out.
- 13:13So it starts off with people who are like,
- 13:15you know, at health risk using it or diabetic
- 13:17or using it or who have like a significant amount of weight to lose.
- 13:22And now you don't have to be like, quote,
- 13:26medically obese to get on a GLP one because they have the mail-in ones.
- 13:32You can be, oh, I just want to lose 15 pounds.
- 13:36And you can get prescribed to GLP one, right?
- 13:38Like you talk to any of those doctors and they want the money.
- 13:41So yeah, I mean, unless you pop on and look like
- 13:44you geney-acuni or something on your Zoom call with them,
- 13:47then they're probably going to prescribe it to you.
- 13:50Yeah.
- 13:51And in the media, we see it's in the advertising.
- 13:53It really is just being pushed more and more.
- 13:56And I wanted to talk a little bit about what I mentioned earlier
- 13:59in the episode is the rise of skinny culture and fascism.
- 14:03So sociologists and political scientists
- 14:06have increasingly drawn a correlation
- 14:09between the modern rise of skinny culture
- 14:12and the broader ideologies of fascism.
- 14:14So this is often referred to as body fascism.
- 14:18And it operates on the premise that strict bodily discipline,
- 14:22ultra thinness and physical perfection,
- 14:25are direct reflections of personal morality, social status,
- 14:30and superiority.
- 14:32That's so interesting.
- 14:34And the tradwifed trend that we see coming around,
- 14:37how do we keep women?
- 14:40And obviously this applies to men too.
- 14:42They have the right to look more strong.
- 14:46Or the rexia looks maxing stuff going on.
- 14:50But the tradwifed trend, how do we keep women
- 14:54small, quiet, and submissive?
- 14:57So literally in the way that we act and in the way that we look,
- 15:01make them as thin as possible, encourage them
- 15:04to be as tiny and thin as possible.
- 15:06But then also to take up the least amount of room emotionally
- 15:10and socially too.
- 15:12So stay home, cook, clean, do the perfect women things.
- 15:17It's so interesting.
- 15:19It really is.
- 15:20And if you think about it, take up as little space as possible,
- 15:25but just from a physical standpoint,
- 15:28if you are not eating, if you are struggling
- 15:32with a disordered eating, that's going to drain your energy.
- 15:36It's going to lead to a lack of cognitive bandwidth.
- 15:40It is much harder to participate in critical thought
- 15:43or a little resistance to stand up to fascism.
- 15:48Yeah, so your body is truly declining
- 15:50and it's just trying to survive,
- 15:51it's trying to store energy as much as possible.
- 15:55And so I think that as we said, we've struggled with this
- 15:59as well.
- 16:00If you find yourself questioning your worth
- 16:02based on the size of your body, it's
- 16:04like, who benefits from this?
- 16:05And I think that that's such an interesting way
- 16:08to really dive in and look at it as well.
- 16:11Who benefits from this?
- 16:12And you know who benefits from this?
- 16:14You know who benefits from us breaking ourselves down.
- 16:16Like that capitalism and brands and companies
- 16:21that try to sell you weight loss pills and waste trainers
- 16:25and the new GLP one and the weight loss lollipops
- 16:28and weight loss gummies that have been Kardashians promote.
- 16:32Skinny tea, think of all of these brands,
- 16:35think of all of these things that we buy, right?
- 16:38And just all of this bullshit.
- 16:40Like I have bought so much bullshit in my day
- 16:44because it'll show up and be like, oh, you do this once a day.
- 16:49If you take a scoop of this powder once a day,
- 16:51it'll speed up your metabolism, right?
- 16:53And now I just have a scoop powder in my cabinet.
- 16:57And yep, that brand got 35 bucks from me.
- 17:00And now there's--
- 17:01And now I have IBS.
- 17:03And now I have IBS.
- 17:04I'm checking all the accidents.
- 17:05Literally.
- 17:07And there's a new piece of plastic in my house.
- 17:10Capitalism thrives on us feeling shitty about ourselves.
- 17:13If we felt great about ourselves and didn't want it and,
- 17:17you know, like, oh, I don't need to change anything about me.
- 17:22Then who's going to be actually like, oh, why is--
- 17:25Why is a man making me feel this way?
- 17:29Why are these power structures in place?
- 17:32Like truly, I think that, you know, when we look on it,
- 17:35like, Chana and I feel like the aunties that have been through this
- 17:38and we're screaming at the world, like, oh, my God,
- 17:41no, please don't come back.
- 17:43And, you know, if, like, you are yourself struggling
- 17:47with any sort of issues, you can reach out to a NAD,
- 17:51National Help Line at 1-888-375-7767.
- 17:58I mean, we implore you.
- 17:59You know, there are so many pressures within this world.
- 18:03Please reach out to someone if you are struggling
- 18:05and just know, like, you are so beautiful,
- 18:07no matter how much space you take up, no matter it--
- 18:09Literally.
- 18:10I feel like you are not the perfect ideal body version
- 18:14of yourself.
- 18:15We love you.
- 18:16And we want to talk a little bit about what
- 18:18we've been seeing within pop culture right after the break.
- 18:21So unless you've been living under a rock,
- 18:29you have probably seen one celebrity, maybe two,
- 18:33that are disturbingly skinny.
- 18:38Yes.
- 18:38And causing a sense of concern.
- 18:41So--
- 18:42And we're not going to talk about the worth of these people,
- 18:46or if, you know, they--
- 18:48I don't know.
- 18:49I don't want to make it seem like we are picking them apart
- 18:51and they're such bad people because they look this way.
- 18:53But, like, you can't deny what you see with your own eyes.
- 18:56And I think that there is this shift, like,
- 18:59to--
- 19:00if you talk poorly about somebody's body,
- 19:03then you're not being body-positive.
- 19:05You're picking them apart for the way they look.
- 19:07And that's bad feminism.
- 19:08And like, OK, yes.
- 19:10We don't pick people apart based on the way they look.
- 19:13That's the whole point of this episode.
- 19:15But also, it's OK to comment on, like,
- 19:20we are seeing this person or certain people get
- 19:24to a point where they used to look healthier.
- 19:27And now they are wasting away.
- 19:30And young girls are seeing this too
- 19:32and creating content around it, such as skinny talk.
- 19:36How do I look like XYZ celebrity?
- 19:39So, you know, we're not going to deny what we're literally
- 19:43seeing with our eyes, you guys.
- 19:45Yeah, like, again, we grew up in this time of, like,
- 19:48pro-Anna Tumblr.
- 19:50And if you don't know what that is, I love that life for you.
- 19:54I'm so happy.
- 19:54But it is--
- 19:55Don't go, it's going to be drawing forever.
- 19:57But it is pro-anorexia.
- 20:00Tumblr at the time.
- 20:01Now it's pro-Anna TikTok.
- 20:03And it is, you know, women who are struggling,
- 20:07restricting, disorderly, eating, and ultimately, kind of,
- 20:10like, cheering each other on.
- 20:12And so, if you haven't figured it out yet,
- 20:14we wanted to talk a little bit about what we are seeing
- 20:17with Miss Ariana Grande.
- 20:19And kind of the tour images that have come out
- 20:24of her eternal sunshine tour.
- 20:26And, you know, I think that we started to see this on wicked,
- 20:30a little bit of this thinning of her body
- 20:33the appearance of a ribcage truly just kind of, like,
- 20:37a very concerning thing.
- 20:39And I think we talked about this two years ago when Wicked One
- 20:41came out, where we were quite concerned.
- 20:43We were very concerned.
- 20:44It's even, like, worse now.
- 20:47Like, she's lost so much weight.
- 20:49Like you said, like, these tour photos came out.
- 20:52And it looks shocking.
- 20:53Like a black mirror episode.
- 20:54Like, stand.
- 20:55Yeah.
- 20:56There is this picture.
- 20:58And it is her in front of the stage.
- 21:00You can see, like, her entire ribcage.
- 21:02And everyone behind her has their phones out.
- 21:06And it is truly like a black mirror episode.
- 21:09Like, you're just open.
- 21:10So just open.
- 21:11Who is visibly wasting away in front of us.
- 21:16And, you know, if you look at a video footage
- 21:18of her performing on this tour, it is very scary
- 21:22compared to what she used to do.
- 21:23She looks like we talked about earlier.
- 21:26She used to be so energetic in her show.
- 21:28Yeah.
- 21:29Like dancing.
- 21:30And do that.
- 21:31And that's fun if you want to, yeah.
- 21:33If you want to change, like, your tour program and things
- 21:36like that, but it looks like physically painful.
- 21:40And it looks like she is struggling.
- 21:42And you can hear it in her, in her breath.
- 21:44You can hear it just throughout this.
- 21:46And, you know, we were going to actually record this a week ago.
- 21:50But we ended up pushing it to this week.
- 21:52And one of the things that just came out today is she has canceled--
- 21:58she's not canceled.
- 21:58She's moved three of her tour dates for this tour in the coming weeks
- 22:03in July.
- 22:04She has cited safety concerns.
- 22:06She's not really provided any details.
- 22:08Yeah, like what does that mean?
- 22:10Who is safety?
- 22:12Are they safety?
- 22:13You're safety.
- 22:15Yeah.
- 22:15Like, that's very, all very strange.
- 22:18Yes.
- 22:18And so, you know, I think that we--
- 22:21welcome having this conversation.
- 22:23We know the Ariana stands are going to absolutely come for us.
- 22:26But to go back to the original conversation of, hey, you know,
- 22:32what's most disturbing is we see these stands like you're just jealous.
- 22:37Don't comment on people.
- 22:38You're just a hater.
- 22:40Like all of that.
- 22:41And it's like, hey, I get that you really want the opportunity
- 22:45to see Ariana Grande live.
- 22:46But it feels like a moment where she really needs a hug.
- 22:52And she really needs someone in her life to step up for her.
- 22:55If you want to see Ariana Grande live,
- 22:58you would want her to be healthy so that she can continue
- 23:00to perform live in the future.
- 23:02Like, if we just run these celebrities down to the bone,
- 23:07literally, I guess, like--
- 23:10I don't know.
- 23:10And I hate seeing that, like, just that wheel of, like,
- 23:13burn them through them celebrities.
- 23:16And then we look at them and go, oh, god, she's so--
- 23:18look at her now.
- 23:19I can't believe she-- like, Brittany.
- 23:21You know, I can't believe she looks like that.
- 23:22I can't believe she's doing that, like,
- 23:24her Amanda Bines.
- 23:25And it's like, of course.
- 23:27Of course they are.
- 23:28Like, look at what we've all done to them.
- 23:30So I think also there was pictures recently
- 23:33that came out of Demi Moore.
- 23:35I want to say the Cannes Film Festival.
- 23:37And she looked ultra-rail thin.
- 23:40And the headline was, Demi Moore shows off toned arms.
- 23:45And thankfully, there was a little pushback in the comments.
- 23:48People were like, this isn't toned if all you can see
- 23:51is literally, like, her musculature, like, her bones.
- 23:53Like, that's--
- 23:54Yeah, that's a really--
- 23:55Yeah, that's it.
- 23:56Yeah, yeah.
- 23:57I mean, we-- Kelly Osborne, obviously--
- 24:00Oh, my gosh, Kelly Osborne.
- 24:01--and we know that, like, she was going through grief
- 24:04and grief affects everybody in different ways.
- 24:06And Kelly was bullied relentlessly, also--
- 24:10Like, around our time--
- 24:11Yeah.
- 24:12--for her way and for being, like, chubby.
- 24:15And so, of course, she, like, is mentally taking that
- 24:19to the extreme now while she's grieving, right?
- 24:22But, yeah, she looks very unwell.
- 24:25So I don't know.
- 24:26It's just--
- 24:26Yeah.
- 24:27The Kelly Osborne is quite scary, especially
- 24:30because it's, like, not just in, like, the body.
- 24:32It's the face.
- 24:33It's the temporal way sting.
- 24:35Like, you know, you start to see these really, really scary
- 24:40signs of malnutrition and ultimately, like, people just
- 24:44aren't taking care of themselves.
- 24:46And the three examples we just gave there, right?
- 24:48Ariana Grande has had immense trauma in her life.
- 24:52She's been through terrorist attacks.
- 24:53She's gone through things.
- 24:55And we want her to heal and go through things.
- 24:58Obviously, she has her fair share of messiness,
- 25:00as most people do when they're dealing with complex PTSD.
- 25:03Same thing with Demi Moore and Kelly Osborne.
- 25:07I mean, you know, I'm going through my same version
- 25:10of brief of losing my father.
- 25:12And I think it's such a scary point in time.
- 25:16But the biggest thing is, and the reason
- 25:19that we wanted to talk about this is, like,
- 25:21there is a sense of, like, these people
- 25:24have a sense of responsibility as well.
- 25:27Yeah.
- 25:27To totally agree.
- 25:28The people that follow them, right?
- 25:31And I do think that to sweep it under the rug
- 25:34gives us more Britney Spears.
- 25:36It gives us more, you know, people who, they go,
- 25:41"Oh, wish."
- 25:42They were gone too soon.
- 25:43How did that happen?
- 25:45Right?
- 25:46I mean, like, like, even Karen Carpenter in, like, the 70s,
- 25:49and it was right there in front of everybody,
- 25:51right, that she was wasting away and that she had an eating
- 25:54disorder.
- 25:55And no, I totally agree that, like, celebrities
- 25:57do have a sense of responsibility.
- 26:00Like, they all are going through their own shit
- 26:02because they're human beings too, right?
- 26:04And they're allowed to have mental disorders
- 26:06that they're dealing with.
- 26:07But then you think of, like, the celebrities
- 26:09and the influencers.
- 26:11We should talk about influencer culture
- 26:13to a little bit, like, who tried to tell you
- 26:16how you can look like them too.
- 26:19So Kim Kardashian, when she wanted to fit into Marilyn
- 26:22and Rose Dress, or the Met Gala, like, went on this insane
- 26:28restrictive diet, lost a ton of weight to fit into this dress
- 26:32for one night.
- 26:33And people were applauding her.
- 26:35How great she looked.
- 26:36How amazing she looked, right?
- 26:37Lily Reinhardt actually, like, won't go to the Met Gala
- 26:40anymore because she released a statement afterwards.
- 26:43And was like, are you fucking kidding me?
- 26:46We're, we're hyping this woman up
- 26:47for losing, like, 20 pounds in two weeks
- 26:49to fit and do a goddamn dress.
- 26:52Like, yeah.
- 26:52This is, like, bodies are not trends, right?
- 26:57And they always fluctuate of what's in and what's out.
- 27:01Yeah.
- 27:02But, like, she--
- 27:02When she's on games, like, five pounds
- 27:04from the morning to the night.
- 27:05Yeah.
- 27:06But we really know.
- 27:07I need to take a good solid dump.
- 27:09Listen, is that gonna make a break out?
- 27:11I feel that way.
- 27:12But yeah, like, there's so many, like,
- 27:14skinny talk is thriving now, like you said.
- 27:17And just influencers telling you how you can look like them.
- 27:21And what they're doing, the what I eat in a day trend
- 27:25has, you know, been very popular in TikTok and Instagram.
- 27:28And there was a little pushback about, you know, that of, like,
- 27:31what I eat in a day is just a person instead of a person
- 27:35trying to lose weight.
- 27:36Yeah.
- 27:37Oh, I thought they were saying I ate a person.
- 27:40I ate a person.
- 27:42What I eat in a day is a cannibal.
- 27:43Yeah.
- 27:44[LAUGHTER]
- 27:45A day, morning, some toes.
- 27:49I started light with some toes.
- 27:50Yeah.
- 27:51And I think it's interesting.
- 27:52Like, five years ago, right?
- 27:54There was an Instagram, or in a TikTok influencer,
- 27:57Remi Bader.
- 27:58She actually gained popularity within her body positivity
- 28:02moment where she was sharing, like, what
- 28:05does this actually look like on my size body?
- 28:07What does that actually look like?
- 28:09And then she started to share her journey with GLP ones.
- 28:14And really got a lot of backlash for it with it.
- 28:17She ended up having, like, a gastric bypass and came back,
- 28:20like, 100 pounds lighter and really got, like,
- 28:25severely bullied for it.
- 28:26And, you know, I think there is this sense of pressure
- 28:30of, like, damn if I do, damn if I don't, right?
- 28:33Yeah.
- 28:33What does that look like?
- 28:34How do I stay this way?
- 28:35And so, as with most things, I do not envy being a woman.
- 28:40I cannot imagine being a woman in that sense
- 28:44of popularity and influencer and the amount of, like,
- 28:49body comments and you're to this, you're to that.
- 28:52And I think it is very harmful to the psyche.
- 28:56And I don't think I could handle it.
- 28:58Like, if I were Ariana Grande right now,
- 28:59I would probably be struggling with the same thing.
- 29:03100%.
- 29:04But I would hope that someone would comment and say, like,
- 29:07hey, I don't want to see this or I don't support this, right?
- 29:11And yeah, the Barbie movie speech, like, you think
- 29:14about it, you're to this, you're to that.
- 29:15And I think that it's impossible to be a woman.
- 29:18Yeah.
- 29:18Even body positive influencers, like you mentioned,
- 29:21if they to lose weight, they're ripped to shreds too.
- 29:25Because then people are saying that they're falling
- 29:27into societal beauty, standard norms.
- 29:30What if they really wanted to lose weight?
- 29:31What if their doctor told them that, like,
- 29:33they needed to lose weight for their blood health,
- 29:36for their joints, for their heart, like, you know,
- 29:38just whatever reason a person wants to.
- 29:42But yeah, because influencers make their entire propiles
- 29:46around their bodies sometimes, you are so pressure
- 29:49to stay looking that way and maintain thinness
- 29:54or maintain being plus size.
- 29:57And you're not allowed to shift one way or the other.
- 29:59So literally impossible to be a woman.
- 30:01It really is.
- 30:02And I think that, you know, at the end of the day,
- 30:06the hardest part of this is like, how do you navigate
- 30:09this conversation, you know, where you're trying to have it
- 30:12in the most positive way together?
- 30:14But I think it just comes back to like the conversation
- 30:18of who benefits from this.
- 30:20And how do we even kind of stop ourselves
- 30:23from falling into the trap?
- 30:25And again, we're being brainwashed every single day,
- 30:27every time we scroll, every time we consume any sort of media.
- 30:32And so really, we just wanted to have our little
- 30:35anti-conversation with you guys.
- 30:37Yes.
- 30:38You are perfect the way that you are.
- 30:41Do the thing that is going to be the best for you.
- 30:46Focus on what your body can do rather than what it looks like.
- 30:50You went on that hike today.
- 30:51You walked maybe you're healing from trauma physically
- 30:54or mentally.
- 30:55You made one extra step today into that direction
- 30:58of what you want to go to, right?
- 31:00Like focus on the things that you can do
- 31:02and that your body does for you rather than what you wish
- 31:06it would look like in the mirror.
- 31:07And this is all so much easier, like said than done.
- 31:12But I mean, one thing that helped me is I got off of Instagram
- 31:17for six months.
- 31:18I mean, I would scroll a little bit,
- 31:20but I didn't post for six months because I felt myself
- 31:23starting to get into that like influencer thing.
- 31:27I was getting brands reaching out to me
- 31:28wanting me to wrap their products and stuff.
- 31:31And I had so much pressure of like posting every single day.
- 31:34And how do I look?
- 31:35Oh my god.
- 31:36Look at my role in that picture.
- 31:37My acne star and that one of it just like done.
- 31:41I'm done.
- 31:42I'm taking a break.
- 31:43I am taking a detox.
- 31:45You can set an alarm on Instagram.
- 31:47I'm sure TikTok has it too.
- 31:49Yeah.
- 31:50Where it's like time limits on your day of like,
- 31:52you've reached 45 minutes for your day or whatever.
- 31:54Time to log off.
- 31:55Unfollow accounts that you know are just going to trigger you.
- 31:59If there's accounts that you're following just because
- 32:01she's hashtag body goals, don't do that to yourself.
- 32:06Like, oh my god, don't do that to yourself.
- 32:08Don't because you know she does that too.
- 32:11She's following pages that are also her body goals.
- 32:15For some, you know, she's comparing herself to someone
- 32:17who's comparing herself to someone.
- 32:18No one's ever going to think they're good enough.
- 32:20So as much as possible, if you're looking at Kylie Jenner's
- 32:24account every day, like, fuck, I wish I looked like that.
- 32:26Unfollow her.
- 32:28She's got enough followers.
- 32:29She doesn't either.
- 32:30It's all fake and it's all edited.
- 32:33And you know, all of that.
- 32:34It is.
- 32:35Yeah.
- 32:36And, you know, we implore you, you know, love yourself.
- 32:41Reach out to supportive family, friends, mental health
- 32:44professionals.
- 32:45Again, if you do find yourself struggling, please reach out to
- 32:49the Anad National Help Line at 888-3757-677.
- 32:58And that's going to be it for this skinny panic episode of
- 33:01Pop Culture Junky.
- 33:02As always, we ask that you take care of yourself and seek
- 33:06whatever is going to be best for you.

- 33:10You know, call a friend.
- 33:11Have your girls up.
- 33:13Everybody looks great.
- 33:15Compliment a girl.
- 33:16Yeah.
