- 0:12Welcome to the story of bad luck blackie. It's
- 0:23about my life from the time I could remember
- 0:27about the age of five until I was most listeners
- 0:44will hear most of the Not so harsh story and
- 0:55my listeners on Apple podcast my subscribers
- 1:00Will hear the down dirty disgusting terrifying
- 1:08moment of my life. Bad luck blackie. Turn my
- 1:19bad luck upside down and right side up. The reasons
- 1:29for writing this book are to help me deal with
- 1:32certain circumstances that I encounter throughout
- 1:35my life. The second reason is to get the truth
- 1:38out about what really happened in my life. This
- 1:41book is based on facts from the past and present.
- 1:44None of these stories are made up and this book
- 1:46is derived from my actual memories. The characters
- 1:50in this book are fictional. to protect the identity
- 1:53of others. This book is about Black East experiences
- 2:03from childhood to adulthood, from my trials and
- 2:07tribulations. I thought I was faced with bad
- 2:10luck. After a number of years, I realized that
- 2:13what happened to me throughout my life was not
- 2:16bad luck at all. In fact, they were life lessons
- 2:20that I had to learn from and make better decisions
- 2:23for myself. In the end, I realized that I'm blessed.
- 2:27I am truly blessed. All rights reserved. Copyright

- 3:16it for the first time. Fatter woman syndrome
- 3:19and close to the edge. Almost fatal. The funeral.
- 3:26Afterthoughts. A small. I always wanted to be
- 3:35an author from the time I was in eighth grade
- 3:38until now. My inspiration did not come until
- 3:41about a year and a half ago when my older sister
- 3:44and I were talking about our past. I mentioned
- 3:47that I was going to write a book so that everyone
- 3:49would finally know the truth versus all of the
- 3:52lies that have been told by other family members.
- 3:56I was kind of just playing that day, but we started
- 3:59talking about it again. And I asked my sister,
- 4:01is there anything that she does not want me to
- 4:03put in the book? And she told me nothing, just
- 4:06as long as it was the truth. Well, she passed
- 4:09away almost a year ago, and I wanted to keep
- 4:11my word as well as get therapy from writing about
- 4:14what was bothering me. I started the book in
- 4:17May of 2001 and finished it five months later
- 4:20in October. I've worked for time at a local business
- 4:23that get most of its revenue from members. I
- 4:27run a small business, Changing Phases, that consists
- 4:30of wedding and special event planning and a publishing
- 4:33company which includes writing for special events,
- 4:36proofreading, editing, layout, etc. I also have
- 4:41a non -profit organization for sister kids that
- 4:44is designed to help kids in need. We supply school
- 4:48uniforms, supplies, clothes, books, and whatever
- 4:52else can make a child feel good about themselves.
- 4:56Donations are collected twice a year and are
- 4:59distributed to local schools, churches, and shelters.
- 5:02I'm also a freelance writer for a local newspaper.
- 5:06I took this job a few months ago to enhance my
- 5:08writing skills. I found that I have to keep myself
- 5:12busy so that I will not continue to think about
- 5:15my past and if things stop bothering me. I have
- 5:18two wonderful boys who inspire me to keep pushing
- 5:21so that I can provide a comfortable life for
- 5:24the two of them when I'm no longer here. Despite
- 5:27all that I do, I still find the time to hang
- 5:30out with my two boys. We go bowling on Sundays,
- 5:33we go to the movies, bike riding, play board
- 5:36games, and we attend a lot of sporting events.
- 5:41During these past months, I have been glued to
- 5:44this computer in the middle of the night and
- 5:46some weekends. I want to say to my kids that
- 5:49I really appreciate your patience with me during
- 5:52the past five months. I love you two more than
- 5:55life itself. Acknowledgements. There are certain
- 6:03people in my life right now and people in my
- 6:06past that I would like to thank for their support
- 6:09and love. First, I would like to thank the people
- 6:12who saved my life on the infinite day, December
- 6:1527, 1994. I would like to thank all of the EMS
- 6:19crew, the staff, my ex -co -workers, ex -bosses,
- 6:22my home care patients who gave me wisdom, friends
- 6:25that I'll no longer have contact with, and my
- 6:28family. If it was not for you all, I would not
- 6:30be here right now. Your support, skills, and
- 6:33just being there when I needed you to be there
- 6:36gave me all the will to survive. There was a
- 6:39reason God allowed me to live, and I'm doing
- 6:43just what he asked me to do. The nurses that
- 6:47helped me when I was on the crazy floor, Diane
- 6:49and William, thank you for your kind words, Diane
- 6:52Gottsy. Now I want to thank the people that are
- 6:54in my life at the present. To my co -workers
- 7:03and friends who listen and talk to me without
- 7:06pressures, bone and new bodies, you gave me the
- 7:08strength and say that allowed me to carry on
- 7:11with this book. To my critics who read the book
- 7:21as I wrote, thank you for your belief in me.
- 7:26To my co -workers who were there for me when
- 7:28I was safe with a critical time in my life, December
- 7:318th, 2000, thanks for being there for my family
- 7:35and I. Thanks to everyone who has been a part
- 7:38of my life, past and present, and gave me positive
- 7:40things to live by. Thank you so much. A special
- 7:43thanks to my high school friend. You made me
- 7:46laugh when I could not talk. I love you. Most
- 7:49of all, I would like to thank the two most precious
- 7:51men in my life, my sons. You are my life and
- 7:54have given me so much richness that I would not
- 7:58trade for the world. You are my reason for living,
- 8:01my sanity, my strength. You loved me when there
- 8:03was no one else in my life that cared. Would
- 8:06not change the event of my life for I would not
- 8:10have to you, too As any mother would you know
- 8:14that would lay down my life for you guys. I love
- 8:16you If there is anyone else I forgot I am sorry.
- 8:24I would like to thank you also The ultimate thanks
- 8:27goes to the Lord I would not be here today if
- 8:30it would not for your grace and mercy Bits and
- 8:35pieces my first thoughts of my past were when
- 8:38I was in kindergarten my family I when they're
- 8:41living on the street which was located on the
- 8:44west side of Dayton, almost 27 years ago. When
- 8:47my family and I were living at this house, the
- 8:50neighborhood was pretty peaceful. It was almost
- 8:52like we were the only ones living on the street
- 8:53at the time. Besides, when we would go outside
- 8:56and play or argue with our neighbors, the Browns,
- 9:01upset us. Here it goes again. My mind is trying
- 9:04to battle these uncomfortable thoughts of the
- 9:06past. I bet you are wondering, but my mind is
- 9:09constantly battling the West, aren't you? Well,
- 9:11let me start like this. I loved kindergarten
- 9:14so much that I did not want to miss a day of
- 9:16it. One morning, my siblings and I were getting
- 9:19ready for school, and I was so close to avoiding
- 9:21what made me so uncomfortable each, well, almost
- 9:25each morning. We ate breakfast, usually here
- 9:28at cereal. Yeah, we had other things like oatmeal
- 9:31grits and sauces occasionally, which was like
- 9:33heaven to us because we were not that what often
- 9:36have those kind of luxury breakfasts. Breakfasts?
- 9:41Breakfast? all the time. We also had bacon and
- 9:45eggs every now and then. Well, this morning,
- 9:48I got up from the table, which sat only about
- 9:51four out of eight family members. I was envisioning
- 9:54walking down the street to my favorite getaway
- 9:57spot, kindergarten. When suddenly my mom, I would
- 10:01call her Peggy, said, come and take this vitamin.
- 10:05My heart down there stopped. I was scared to
- 10:08death about taking vitamins. I know some people
- 10:16might say, well, there must have been no... those
- 10:18little orange tubular vitamins that taste good
- 10:20to kids. Well, let me tell you a thing or two.
- 10:23These vitamins were the big red horse pills.
- 10:26They were called one -a -day vitamins. Yeah,
- 10:29you know those vitamins. They used to be on commercials
- 10:31all of the time. They always showed grown women
- 10:34taking them so easily with water. Peggy knew
- 10:37I had a problem taking vitamins with water. I
- 10:40think I did not know how to open my throat right
- 10:43enough to complete the strategy of making the
- 10:46vitamin slide down smoothly with water. Can you
- 10:49imagine a five -year -old taking a one -day vitamin?
- 10:52I surely cannot Peggy said if Renee, Renee is
- 10:56my younger sister who was only About two years
- 11:00old, I guess. Well, I was five. She was she must've
- 11:05been two Renee Kentucky vitamin you can too,
- 11:08but I remembered Renee taking a big red I remember
- 11:11her taking those little orange troubles vitamins
- 11:13I'd mentioned earlier. I think Peggy was trying
- 11:16to guilt trip me trying to make me feel like
- 11:18a woozy compared to Renee, trying to get her
- 11:22strategy to work. I ended up trying to take the
- 11:25big red, but not went out to fight. I said to
- 11:28Peggy something like this, I'm scared to take
- 11:29these vitamins. I remember she replied and hurt.
- 11:35I remember she replied, and her attendant, this
- 12:08vitamin girl, Peggy got what she wanted. I refused
- 12:50to take the vitamin. Not because I wanted to
- 12:52anger her, but because I was scared to death
- 12:54to swallow that big object with water. I put
- 12:57the vitamin in my mouth, And then I tried to
- 13:00follow it with water. It went down what I think
- 13:03was halfway and then it came back up. You know
- 13:06how it feels to up chuck. Water surrounded the
- 13:10vitamin and they both came up like I was a baby
- 13:13spitting up and almost threw up. You better not
- 13:18throw up! She said. I had to drink that nasty
- 13:29warm water again to prevent throwing up. But
- 13:32the vitamin was on the roof of my mouth, stuck.
- 13:37I took the warm, soft, and faded vitamin out
- 13:40of my mouth. She said. Everybody come in here
- 13:44and help me! All but one of my siblings came
- 13:49in the room, the living room, to help. Peggy
- 13:52told Renee and my younger brother to hold my
- 13:56arms and my older sister and older brother to
- 13:59hold my legs while she attempted to shove the
- 14:01vitamin down my throat. Sonny tangentially gritted
- 14:05her teeth and saying, Take this vitamin! Take
- 14:11this vitamin! Peggy had no success because I
- 14:16was kicking and spitting out the water. and vitamin
- 14:19at the same time. Hold her down tight! Hold her
- 14:27down tight! And they began to put pressure on
- 14:34my arms and legs and that is when my terror began.
- 14:38Peggy repeated trying to force the vitamin down
- 14:40my mouth with water. It came back up or I forced
- 14:44it up to avoid choking. I felt like I was on
- 14:48an amusement park ride, more like a scrambler.
- 14:53I was jerking the ground with potential danger.
- 14:59I was flying on and off the couch, facing the
- 15:02front door, wishing that this ordeal was over
- 15:05or would be over soon. I can still see that day
- 15:09clear as ever. She tried to make me take it again.
- 15:12I tried so hard, but it was not happening. All
- 15:14of a sudden, I was laying halfway on the couch
- 15:15with my head in the crack, my feet dangling in
- 15:19the floor, with my siblings holding my arms and
- 15:23legs. It was, it seemed, I was fighting for my
- 15:25life. I can still feel water going down my throat,
- 15:28going down my throat like a river. overflowing
- 15:31and the one a day being shoved down a tube that
- 15:34was two times smaller than the object. I started
- 15:37chugging once again, sitting up kicking and feeling
- 15:39like I was going to die. Half of my siblings
- 15:42were laughing like they were enjoying the conflict.
- 15:45I could see my youngest brother with a smile
- 15:47on his face standing above me. I can still see
- 15:49that simple grin which reminds me of the jokers
- 15:52from the movie Batman. I forgave them, but we
- 15:55never did talk about the incident afterwards.
- 15:58I just forgave them through my own ways, through
- 16:00my heart. They were just kids doing what their
- 16:02mother told them to do and did not know the impact
- 16:05that day would have on me, even almost 30 years
- 16:08later. Sure, I am over the incident and I am
- 16:12not affected drastically by it, but I still think
- 16:14about it and I still give my 11, 8 -year -old
- 16:20chewable vitamins. I never felt like I was an
- 16:24equal part of them anyway, especially after that
- 16:28event, and I would get to those reasons later
- 16:30on in the book. was not successful taking the
- 16:35vitamins. Peggy said, be in that room. You are
- 16:43not going to school today. That really devastated
- 16:46me. She knew I loved school. That was where I
- 16:51was able to have fun, where I thought I received
- 16:53love from my teacher because she gave me positive
- 16:55attention. I began to walk to my room slowly.
- 16:58You know how you do not want to go do something,
- 17:01and you begin to walk really slow, crying all
- 17:03the way. They are hoping that something is going
- 17:05to change before you get to your destination.
- 17:09Well, I didn't somehow I was left in what seemed
- 17:13like a big scary house all alone till my dad
- 17:15Stepdad came home from what I would call an all
- 17:20-night party Staying away from home as much as
- 17:24you can to fling. I would call him hunter I chose
- 17:27this name because it symbolizes what he is all
- 17:30about. I was in the bed when hunter came home
- 17:33I felt and hurried him getting closer to my room.
- 17:36I should say our room I shared it with my younger
- 17:38sister and my two brothers I lay there so suddenly,
- 17:42shaking on the inside like a frozen fish. I did
- 17:45not want him to know that I was home. So I reframed
- 17:50from shaking only on the outside. So I thought,
- 17:55for fear that my bed would shake and he would
- 17:58know someone was home. Hunter finally came into
- 18:01my room. I tried to figure out how he knew I
- 18:04was there. Was it a living room, a wreck? Was
- 18:07I rambling and he heard me? Hunter asked me what
- 18:11was I doing home. I said I wanted to go to school.
- 18:14I can't remember what I told him about the vitamin
- 18:17incident. I probably did not because I did not
- 18:20want Peggy to get further upset with me. Hunter
- 18:23always took my side. Hunter said, go in the bathroom
- 18:26and take your gown off. I refroze, this time
- 18:29like an ice cube. I sat there trying to think
- 18:32of a reason why I should not be washed up. But
- 18:36I already said I wanted to go to school. Go to
- 18:42the bathroom so I can wash you up, he said. Hunter
- 18:45had this really strong and manly voice that controlled
- 18:47just about anyone he came in contact with. I
- 18:51slowly walked to the bathroom, and what seemed
- 18:53like it took years to get there. My gang was
- 18:55taken off slightly above my left shoulder before
- 18:59I could reach the bathroom. The reason why I
- 19:02was falling is because I had a sense that something
- 19:05was up between my older sister and he. I could
- 19:08not pinpoint it at the time, but as the years
- 19:11went by, all the pieces came together while felt
- 19:16something was wrong with their relationship.
- 19:19When I managed to get my gown completely off,
- 19:21he lifted my pot belly and skinny long legs into
- 19:24the sink that had a mirror behind it. He read
- 19:26the rag, washcloth, in the bathtub and told me
- 19:30to open my legs. I would not do it. It's funny
- 19:34when a young child knows his or her private parts
- 19:38are sacred. Open up, he said. I didn't care if
- 19:43I smelled like piss. I was against opening up.
- 19:46Hunter finally started to wash me and slowly
- 19:48and I slowly opened up with a little help from
- 19:52him I stayed tense the whole time. He was washing
- 19:54me I looked at my new body in the mirror my power
- 19:58belly long leg Little round ass and I can see
- 20:01his face behind my body After what seemed like
- 20:04hours. He finally lifted me out the sink Drive
- 20:07me off and took me to get dressed The last part
- 20:11I remember of the day is when we were both walking
- 20:13down the street to my kindergarten school I remember
- 20:16more bits and pieces of when we were living in
- 20:19the house on the west side. My stepdad and his
- 20:33friends used to go hunting for rabbit, ducks
- 20:35and chickens and anything else that we consumed
- 20:39internally for a meal. Hunter's friends were
- 20:42mostly alcoholics or drank an awful lot because
- 20:45they were not at that stage yet. One day I was
- 20:48eating cereal at the breakfast table which was
- 20:50right in front of the sliding glass door facing
- 20:53the backyard. I was looking out the window and
- 20:56all of a sudden I saw Hunter's swinging his animal
- 20:58by his neck. I thought it was a duck because
- 21:00he used to kill ducks and cook them for dinner.
- 21:03But it actually was a chicken. Hunter swung that
- 21:06chicken so hard that the neck came off and that
- 21:08chicken was running around in circles headless
- 21:10on a black porch until it fell dead. I was just
- 21:15staring, scared to move. Finally my sister and
- 21:17I went to the sliding back door to see the dead
- 21:19animal up close. The chicken was just lying there
- 21:22on his chest with the blood. around his neck,
- 21:26dripping on the concrete. I would think that
- 21:30an incident like that would turn me to dislike
- 21:34chicken as food. I am the opposite. I remember
- 21:42growing up, I didn't eat chicken for years. And
- 21:45I would always give it to my older brother. We
- 21:48used to have chicken legs and rice and gravy.
- 21:50Mmm, that rice and gravy was so good. But chicken
- 21:52legs, I would see the blood coming out of it.
- 21:56I wouldn't eat it for years. And my brother used
- 22:00to eat it. I also remember that we had a cat
- 22:05that had kittens and one day I went into the
- 22:08backyard and I saw my brother throwing kittens
- 22:11up in the air above those old grave trash cans.
- 22:18The kittens would fall into the cushioning trash
- 22:20cans most of the time but a couple of times they
- 22:23would hit the ground. I was so afraid that the
- 22:25kittens were going to die that I wanted to tell
- 22:27my mom but I was afraid that she would tell Hunter
- 22:30and the boys would get a whooping with a switch.
- 22:33Hunter would grit his teeth while he whooped.
- 22:35like he was gaining strength. Sometimes he would
- 22:37even pop them on the head for little reasons
- 22:40at all, like for not rolling the bottom of the
- 22:43toothpaste tube up so none would be wasted. Hunter
- 22:47would take his anger out on all of us, all of
- 22:50the time, either with hurting words or by physical
- 22:53force. I hated to see my studs get a whooping,
- 22:57boarding line beating. It made my heart string
- 22:59when I would see that. My brothers would cry
- 23:02or squirm trying to get away. I can only remember
- 23:05getting a whippin' borderline beating one or
- 23:07two times from Hunter, mainly because my younger
- 23:09sister was a pest and she would do things and
- 23:12bathe in on me. I guess I felt special because
- 23:16I not only received a couple of beatings in my
- 23:19childhood, because I only received a couple of
- 23:24beatings in my childhood. Now that I think about
- 23:27it, those thoughts, this is something really
- 23:29sickening to admit. I guess my siblings had it
- 23:33so bad with Hunter that... I was relieved to
- 23:36have only received a couple of scoldings. A few
- 23:39times when I would go into my older sister's
- 23:41room, it was connected to Hunter's and Peggy's
- 23:45room. I saw Hunter look at my sister's in a sneaky
- 23:47kind of way. I tried to analyze it, and it gave
- 23:50me a really eerie feeling, like I should not
- 23:53have been around at that time. So from then on,
- 23:59every time I would go into my sister's room,
- 24:02I would look and see if Hunter's bedroom with
- 24:03doors was closed. And if it was, I thought it
- 24:06was okay to continue to go to my sister's room.
- 24:10If his bedroom door was cracked, I would not
- 24:12go into my sister's room because I would feel
- 24:14that he was peeking at us and I could not be
- 24:17myself. I could feel the tension when Hunter
- 24:21was around my sister, but I did not know what
- 24:24it was until I had gotten older. I remember Peggy
- 24:27and Hunter having a lot of parties, most of which
- 24:30I think were Hunter's idea. Most of the people
- 24:32that came over were his drunken friends that
- 24:34Peggy did not approve of. Especially the horus
- 24:38women who used to stick around with Hunter on
- 24:41the down -low or so they thought There was this
- 24:45one woman who I cannot stand She was very nice
- 24:49to us kids for certain obvious reasons But she
- 24:52would come over to parties and we'd be all over
- 24:55Hunter right in front of Peggy. I remember her
- 24:58name It is Bertha. That's the fake name, but
- 25:02I would call her Bertha She was dark -skinned
- 25:04with the pretty wig that she used to wear all
- 25:07the time. Nice looking lady but nasty and disrespectful
- 25:10to my mom. I remember this gay man named Wilbur,
- 25:14that's his real name, who also used to come to
- 25:18these parties. He had a big mole on the side
- 25:20of his face that made him look really odd and
- 25:23scary. He was the loudest one in the crowd most
- 25:27of the time. Sometimes we would dance for money
- 25:31in front of a hunter and his drunken friends.
- 25:35We would get a dime or two for our efforts. One
- 25:40time Hunter made me dance. I was so shy even
- 25:44though a whole dime would buy me 10 candies and
- 25:48I still would not dance in front of his friends.
- 25:51Hunter said, go dance. I said, no, I don't want
- 25:54to. He said, fat fat, go dance. That was my nickname.
- 25:58Without looking on his face like, you better
- 26:00do what you told. So I went and danced. I always
- 26:03did this certain dance where I would put one
- 26:05leg behind the other, alternate and snap my fingers
- 26:08at the same time. That one leg went back. Hunter's
- 26:12friend said, go sweetie. That was a nickname
- 26:15that stuck with me all of these years. Whenever
- 26:17he would see me, he would call me sweetie. That
- 26:21old time song will last forever. When the song
- 26:24was over, they said, come and get your money.
- 26:27So I collected my two dimes and ran out of the
- 26:30room in embarrassment. My younger sister used
- 26:32to get all the attention, mainly because she
- 26:34was the youngest and demanded more of my parents'
- 26:37time. She used to get almost everything she wanted
- 26:40if they could afford it. she would get it. For
- 26:43her third birthday, she wanted this Snoopy cake,
- 26:47although it was not very affordable, so I thought
- 26:49she'd still get that cake. My parents used to
- 26:52cry poor whenever we wanted something, especially
- 26:55to my three oldest siblings. The youngest got
- 26:59more of what we wanted, but nobody got as much
- 27:02as my youngest sister. Youngest siblings have
- 27:07a way of picking with their oldest sisters and
- 27:09brothers that drives us crazy mad. My youngest
- 27:14sister used to pick me with me in ways that get
- 27:17me so angry I could burst. She would do things
- 27:20like stand in front of the television so that
- 27:22we could not see. And if we were to ask her to
- 27:25move, she would holler out to our mom that we
- 27:27were picking on her. Guess who would get in trouble?
- 27:33You got it. She would also hit us, and when we
- 27:36would hit her back, she would tell mother that
- 27:39we hit her for no reason. One day she erased
- 27:42me to the point where I just pinned her down
- 27:44on the bed and said to her The dough is gonna
- 27:49get you While I bang her head down on the mattress.
- 27:55I knew if I hurt her too bad I would be in big
- 27:57trouble no matter what so I just scared her she
- 28:00told my mother what I did to her and I tried
- 28:03and As I tried to explain what she did to me
- 28:06I got in trouble My punishment was staying in
- 28:09my room until dinner was ready my older brother
- 28:12of getting my younger sister this nickname called
- 28:14Diggerish. Because she used to pull her pennies
- 28:17out of her behind constantly. Whenever she would
- 28:22get him into trouble, he would replace her real
- 28:25name with Diggerish. I used to love that. It
- 28:30was like I was getting revenge on her by laughing
- 28:32at her for all the times she would get me in
- 28:34trouble. The next chapter is The Move. We will
- 28:40continue with this book tomorrow. Thank you for
- 28:44joining. And I will see you on the flip side.
