Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: We interrupt this program for breaking news.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Bob Crash Davis, unofficial record holder after surviving at least 17 airplane crashes, is reported missing after air traffic control lost contact with his plane over Lake Michigan.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: No reports of survivors as of yet.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Stay tuned to the Steve and Jeff Show for breaking news updates.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Why not follow or subscribe so you don't miss a thing?
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And now back to the Steve and Jeff Show.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Jeff, that news is just stunning.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: It's shocking.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: It's upsetting.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: It's uplifting.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: It's appalling.
- 0:32SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 0:32SPEAKER_03: How's it going, Steve?
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: You know, it was going okay, but boy, hearing that news about Bob Crash Davis, one of our great guests on the show last season.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, I know.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: It just seems like yesterday he was crashing an airline and bragging about it.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Gosh, 17 crashes, and you know, he's missing.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: So we are certainly our thoughts and prayers are with Bob and his family that they will find Bob out in Lake Michigan.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: It's a big lake, but he's out there somewhere, guys.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Bob Crash Davis needs to be saved.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: And Steve, I don't think we should automatically assume he's only at 17, because if they find him, oh, he'd be at 18.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: Plus, we haven't seen him for a few months.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: So oh yeah.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: You know, Friday.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: He could be in the 20s.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Funny thing you say that because of course I saw him when he was on the show, but then a few weeks ago when I was at Randolph Scott Airport, I saw him.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: He was getting on a plane.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: He did Bob and he crossed his fingers and kind of waved.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: He was boarding.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: You know, he crossed his gave me a little wave with the cross fingers.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, hey, good luck.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: That one didn't crash, apparently, but yeah, apparently this one did.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: Well, he's not perfect.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: You know, he wasn't perfect.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he makes mistakes.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: And so I'm I'm a little shell shocked here because I know we had planned on doing an another episode.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that I was looking forward to.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: We had a guest right on the other side of the glass, right over there.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: We had this guest that we were gonna talk to, and it's a great guest tonight, Jeff.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: We were gonna have Bobo, who is one of the parrots that's guarding the studio and keeping us out.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Bobo is taking a big risk because I don't think Miss Claire would like it if he's coming on the show while we're locked out of the studio.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: But he was gonna take that chance and he's gonna come on the show.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: And I I I feel bad, but we really need to honor Crash Davis.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: I think so too.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: Although Bobo would have been pretty interesting, it would have been almost like a combination of Animal Kingdom and Tourette's syndrome because you know, the way those parrots are swearing and yelling and and doing all that is is is quite amazing.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: In fact, I spoke to their owner, you know, when we set this meeting up, you know, asked the owner if uh we could borrow one of the parrots, and he recommended Bobo.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: And he actually told me that uh he had an experience with Bobo recently.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: And swearing and biting experience or something different?
- 2:50SPEAKER_03: It was different.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, he said that Bobo had swallowed some Viagra.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: You have to keep that stuff away from kids and parents, uh, parrots.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Wait, I'm so confused.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: You know, and I was like, Oh shit, what did you do?
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: And he says, Well, he disciplines all these parrots, you know, quite a bit.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: And he decided he was a parrot trainer.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's that's his job is to discipline parrots, right?
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: All right, so he was just they're hard to discipline.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, totally.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: So he was disgusted and he uh put Bobo in the freezer to uh cool off, you know, quote unquote, you know, just to chill out because he had been a bad parrot.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Tad extreme, but hey, I don't train animals, probably not what I would have done, but okay, but I digress.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: So so then he said he had him in there for like a day, and then he opens up the freezer and he sees that Bobo's sweating like a pig.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: And he says in the freezer, in the freezer, and in the freezer.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he says to Bobo, he says, uh, how come you're sweating?
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: And Bobo looks at him and says, Do you know how hard it is to open the legs of a frozen chicken?
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: So smart, smart parents.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Wow, yeah.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: You could get Salmonella opening those legs too.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: You you want to be really careful with that frozen chicken.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: Totally.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: So I'm kind of disappointed that we're not able to do that episode.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: Not as disappointed as I am that Bob could potentially be dead, or at least we know he's missing.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: So I feel bad about that.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: You know, and Jeff, I think the appropriate honor for Bob Crash Davis would be to remind listeners of what his story is.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: And I think if we take some of that show that we did last season and let listeners hear the real Bob Crash Davis story, the story behind the story, the real truth, I think that would mean a lot to his family and to Bob if he if he reappears.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Hopefully he'll reappear.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, I think so too.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: I think that's a good way to remember him and to let everybody else understand that the Bob that we knew, the Bob that people experience when they listen to the episode.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: So I agree, Steve.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Johnny, take us to that old Bob Crash Davis show.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: Hey, hey, Steve, Jeff, how are you?
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: Good to be here.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: Hey, Bob.
- 4:58SPEAKER_04: Good to finally meet you guys.
- 4:59SPEAKER_04: You know, see uh put the uh voices to those world famous faces.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Now I I gotta ask, Bob, was your your flight here was okay, wasn't it?
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, I walked.
- 5:09SPEAKER_04: I walked.
- 5:10SPEAKER_04: It wasn't very far.
- 5:11SPEAKER_04: Less than three miles.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: If it's less than three miles, I walk.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: It really is kind of a waste of fuel to take a plane that distance, I think.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: Should I call you Bob?
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: What do you go by?
- 5:20SPEAKER_04: My name is Bob, it's not Robert, it's actually Bob.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: Everybody just started calling me Crash.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: Crash Davis.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Crash Davis, yeah.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Crash Davis.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Okay, all right.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: Like from the uh Bull Durham uh movie, wasn't I think the catcher might have been named Crash.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: Although I guess you in I in the perfect world, you'd be not crash Davis, but yeah, or Crash Survive or Crash Survive Davis.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Well, we didn't ask about his middle name.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: That could be his middle name, Jeff.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Could be, we don't know, could be so.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: Well, it's nice to meet you, Bob.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: Crash, thanks, thanks, everybody.
- 5:55SPEAKER_04: Uh good to be here.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: You know, Crash, we're gonna ask you about your advice to travelers for safety, but first we got to hear your story.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Tell us about some of these crashes that you've been in.
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: You know, I I always was fascinated with airplanes as a kid.
- 6:08SPEAKER_04: You'd see them flying over, and it's like, well, I wish I could get on one of those.
- 6:12SPEAKER_04: Then I did, and for some reason there was uh no landing gear on the plane when it came back down.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: And wow, we just kind of skidded to a halt.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: The amazing thing is that was the first of the 17 plane crashes I have survived.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: 17 plane crashes, yes, seven and what year what year was that crash?
- 6:34SPEAKER_04: That was in 1989.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: So it was before the optional you pay extra for yeah, you pay extra to survive the crash assignment, yeah, and landing gear, right?
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, landing gear is an option.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, hey, if you don't pick it, you don't get it, right?
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: I gotta think you don't have a lot of competition for that record.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: 17 crashes.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: It's gotta be you gotta be way ahead.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: There was one guy from Kazakhstan that was decided to give it a run, but let's just say he's not getting over 12.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: That's gotta be a real handicap in uh breaking that record is you know, you never know when it's gonna stop.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: And when it stops, it boy, it really does, doesn't it?
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: It stops gold, so to speak.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: It does.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: I do have a question.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: How many of these crashes did you actually cause?
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: Oh well, you mean like was I the pilot on?
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I don't know, but uh it just seems like a lot of bad luck and good luck, right?
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: Bad luck that you had them, good luck you survived them.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: I'm just wondering if trying to hold on to that world record that maybe you might have played more of an active role than somebody like me that you know just sits up just sitting on the plane, you know, yeah dozing, eating peanuts, you know, whatever.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: You know, it's kind of like that Cal Ripkins streak.
- 7:43SPEAKER_04: You get started, and then every once in a while you just kind of gotta go out there and make something happen.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna say which one, you know, I did get my pilot's license, so I could uh kind of ensure that you know I can I can get the record if I need it.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: I can I can keep things going.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: Good to know.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: Well, Crash, are there airports that people should avoid or maybe favor that are better or worse for crashes than than other airports?
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Because they all kind of look the same from the outside, don't they?
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: But maybe they're not.
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: Oh, I'll tell you, anything in a small mountain town is you're going fairly slow.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: And as long as you don't go face first into the mountain, if you can just kind of skid around a little bit, it counts as a crash, but you can walk away from the skidding around the uh face first into a mountain.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: You gotta be pretty lucky to walk away from one of those.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: So you're probably looking at oh, like Phoenix, Sky Harbor Airport might be a good one because you're well, you got some mountains around there, though, but maybe we're talking Minneapolis, you know, nice and flat, kind of around there.
- 8:40SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 8:40SPEAKER_04: Minneapolis is a great place to crash.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, I bet.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and they're so friendly up there too.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: You crash, they probably bring you food and stuff, you know.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they just bring out, you know, some some snacks and oh, it looks like you crashed dairy.
- 8:52SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's too bad.
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: And then they just toss it over in the corner with the other planes that have crashed, and you go on with the rest of your day.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's great.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: Do you keep track of of statistics here?
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: Like how many people survived with you?
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: Were you the only survivors in most survivor in most of them, or was were there uh uh a number of other people too?
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: It's one of those things you were talking about.
- 9:15SPEAKER_04: I'm both good luck and bad luck.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: Um bad luck.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: If you get on an airplane with me, there's right around a 10% chance that it's going to crash.
- 9:24SPEAKER_04: But there's a 70% chance you're gonna survive.
- 9:27SPEAKER_04: So you know, overall, you know, you take the good with the bad.
- 9:31SPEAKER_04: That's me.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: So if I if I see you boarding an airplane that I'm on, I should maybe be a little worried, but also feel a little okay.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: Sit close.
- 9:42SPEAKER_04: Sit close, get the seat next to me.
- 9:44SPEAKER_04: I like the window seat.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: Uh well, I like the aisle.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: This could work out.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: You know, we could we could do this, yeah.
- 9:49SPEAKER_04: We could do this.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you think you have to admit there are very few things in life where you get a 90% chance of succeeding, and yeah, I assuming you don't want to crash, you know, 90% of the time you make it, no problem, right?
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: It's only one in ten where you actually have a crash.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: And so I think those are pretty good odds.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: I'd take those odds in almost anything.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: What about you, Steve?
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, one in ten, that's like hardly ever at all, right?
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Hardly anything happened.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Every 10 flights, how long does it take you to take 10 flights?
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, my guess.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: So one of them might crash.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: Whoa, okay.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: When you crash, describe what happens.
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: First, you start going really, really fast, then you go even faster, and then you stop going fast, you stop moving.
- 10:35SPEAKER_04: That sounds rough.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, like I said, if you if you aim right, you can just kind of skip it like a stone going across a calm pond.
- 10:43SPEAKER_04: But you know, you were talking about the water.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 10:46SPEAKER_04: Oh, well, let me tell you something about that.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: You know, that that glory hounds, Sullivan, one time, one time he lands on a river.
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: Oh, big deal.
- 10:57SPEAKER_04: Come on.
- 10:58SPEAKER_04: If I landed sideways in a FedEx airplane, I landed sideways on a railroad bridge.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 11:07SPEAKER_04: I wish I had a river to aim for.
- 11:17SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: I mean, that was the thing.
- 11:19SPEAKER_04: It's like well, the plane was fine when it came to rest.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: It was the train that exploded next to it that caused most of the damage.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: And I bet when that happens, you just have to stop breathing.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you do.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you don't you don't want to take any chances.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: When you're boarding a flight, I assume that people recognize you when you're at the airport.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: You do you have like a t-shirt or sweatshirt that says, I survived 17 crashes, and then maybe you like you cross it off, and maybe it starts off as 14 and then you cross it off and wrote 15 next to it in magic marker, just to be green merch.
- 11:52unknown: Oh, yeah.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: It isn't totally.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: So do you do you find that you're recognized?
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: And when you are recognized, do you do people want to be close to you because they know you're gonna survive, or stay away from you because they're they think they may crash?
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: Well, it it's kind of funny that you say that because yes, I I am recognized, and um most of the flight crews that originate in the United States, they won't let me on the plane anymore.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: Oh so I kind of have to get on with some new pilots or some pilots that are used to flying uh you know, some international flights where I'm not quite as well known.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: But the on the plus side, TSA just waves me through at this point because they figure it really doesn't matter.
- 12:33SPEAKER_04: No, you know, nobody gets searched on the flights that I'm on because you know there's a 10% chance it's crashing.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: So just get everybody on board and let's go.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Hey, if they got eight ounces of liquid, who cares, right?
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 12:45SPEAKER_04: Wow, you can bring a full-size tube of toothpaste on any flight that I'm on.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna check with you because I love bringing those full tubes on.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna find out.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: I'd like to be able to do that, Jeff.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: I just would.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: When you're talking about TSA, I always feel sorry for them when we're we're in line, Steve.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: I don't know when you were flying this last week, but the crowds are horrible.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: And I would imagine crash, you get a good accident at an airport, and those crowds tend to thin out a little bit, and that's so TSA probably looks looks at it as hey, I'm gonna have an easy day.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, tomorrow.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: They probably like seeing you, yeah.
- 13:20SPEAKER_04: I'm sure little known fact, half of the crashes happen at takeoff, so they're not just it's not just for landings anymore.
- 13:28SPEAKER_04: So you're right.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: I come walking through that airport, you start hearing, you know, a little bit of a buzz, people start talking in that line T TSA, it really clears out.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, I bet, yeah.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: And that's so good to know that you're helping those important workers that are doing that necessary job.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: You're bringing them relief, you're bringing them succor, you're bringing them aid, you're bringing them help, and you're relieving them on their busy days.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: That is that's just a good thing.
- 13:51SPEAKER_04: They invite me to their Christmas parties, but that's that's outstanding.
- 13:54SPEAKER_04: That's they do they they do insist on calling me an Uber though.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh, I bet yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: When you go to their Christmas parties, do you have to go through like a metal detector to get in?
- 14:05SPEAKER_04: Oh, there's so much metal embedded in my body.
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: A metal detector really doesn't do any good anymore.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: I would bet 17 crashes.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: You've seen a couple of doctors in your thing.
- 14:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I've bet.
- 14:16SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 14:17SPEAKER_04: I've I've got I've got stuff embedded so deep, it's like it's never coming out.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Crash, you you brought up a really interesting point.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: This is my next question.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: Was going to be so you you pretty much have you control the uh airline market for crashes.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: What about car accidents?
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: What about train wrecks?
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: What about accidents that happen at boating?
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Sounds like those of boating accidents.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Fourth of July, drinking, all kinds of boating.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: Have you thought about you know looking at some of those other categories?
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: I thought about trying to get into the boating accident thing, but you know, I don't have Kennedy kind of money, so um, you know, I can't get insurance, so like I can't buy an airplane and fly my own airplane because nobody will insure it.
- 15:01SPEAKER_04: Kind of hard to get a boat.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: I bet you could get invited onto a boat though.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: Maybe Guinness Book of World Records has a boat that they could throw a party on and you could you could test it out.
- 15:11SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's a good idea.
- 15:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'll bring it up.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm flying twice next month, so there's a good chance we're going up to 18.
- 15:18SPEAKER_04: So I already have the Guinness people on on speed dials.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, if you don't mind, after the show, maybe just uh text us where and when you're flying, just so we not that we are going to be concerned, but just in case we want to take a trip, you know.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: As Steve mentioned, like the boating category of accidents, Kennedys are probably a good source, you know.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: If you want to sort of fast track to try to catch up in the in that category, although I guess they're kind of good on airlines too, and you know, all flying, but but yeah, Kennedy's simple old biggest competition, maybe.
- 15:50SPEAKER_04: The Kennedys do have kind of a mixed record in all transportation categories, yeah.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: So skiing.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness, they've got they've got it all covered, don't they?
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, skiing, boating, flying.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: They're in a different category.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: I think we'd all agree.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: They're not in the survival category, they're not in the not so much.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: They're in the crash, but not the crash, but survive part.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: So you really are a different entity.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: You could say you're a step ahead of them, even though maybe you don't have the Kennedy money, but you're actually a step ahead of them because you're still here, you're still talking about your accidents.
- 16:22SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 16:23SPEAKER_04: I tell you what, I do tend to drink like a Kennedy right before I get on a flight.
- 16:28SPEAKER_04: And uh well, yeah.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: I find that keeps you nice and limber.
- 16:31SPEAKER_04: So, you know, you're not resisting all of the forces that come with impact, you're just kind of going with it.
- 16:37SPEAKER_04: And if you just kind of go with it, if you want to fly with me, Steve, it's like sit close, drink heavily, and you got a 70% chance of surviving the 10% chance that you have of crashing.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: You know, I think I've got that all covered, other than the ticket to sit close to you.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: But I think the rest of it, I'm good, you know, because uh it just pays because you never know when you're gonna have to be flexible, when you have to be relaxed, when you might need to roll a little bit with the punches.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Are there other types of accidents that you tend to have besides crashes?
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, do you find that you get like paper cuts or trip and fall on ice and things like that, or is it limited specifically to transportation?
- 17:18SPEAKER_04: No, I I am pretty accident prone, pretty injury prone, but the glory, the glory really is in the plane crashes.
- 17:26SPEAKER_04: I mean, you know, saying magnificent.
- 17:28SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: I mean, I fell on the ice eight times in the last eight in the last ice storm we had last week, but that's not newsworthy, no, but survived each one of them.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: I didn't know, yeah.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: So nobody asks you about those, do they?
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Nobody, nobody says, Oh, hey, you fell on the ice, but it's like survive a plane crash.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Hey, that's news.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: That's big news.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: It's kind of a home game, right?
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, sort of like if you the professional thing is you know, you crash on a plane, but if you wanted to play the crash Davis game at home, yeah, you'd have on the board, you'd have things like ice and paper cutter, well, accidents and things like that.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: And crash, maybe you see that as kind of your training, your warm-up for the real work that you do with the plane crashes.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's how you prepare.
- 18:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, it's kind of like LeBron shooting around in the driveway, and you know, right?
- 18:17SPEAKER_04: It's like I can take that, and you know, and it's it's that mass appeal then.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 18:23SPEAKER_04: Because even though I've only been in one building collapse, I don't really get to do a lot of public speaking anymore.
- 18:29SPEAKER_04: So I don't know.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Is it because people don't they think something might happen if they bring you in?
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Is that why you can't do public speaking?
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: It's always something, right?
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: It's like they got to fly me in, and usually if they fly me in someplace, they're flying me in with a bunch of other celebrities.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: Well, they're yeah, and their insurance guys say, No, no, no, no, no, you're not doing that with my celebrities.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Because I, yeah, like you say, you you can't get the insurance, but they can, so oh yeah, no, you're on you know you're somebody.
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm actually um the the insurance companies right now are kind of getting together where I can be the only passenger on a flight, no matter how big deal.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, I bet if those companies around the world have your picture on the desk, yeah, like uh like grocery stores have the check for the bounce, you know.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: They got a free price, like you know, I bet they got your picture everywhere.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Because the guys in Vegas, yeah, the guys in Vegas that are professional cheaters, you know, they they they know who they are, so they keep uh an eye out for them.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: I think that people are missing the point.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: It's like sort of that glass is 80% dead, but 20% dirty.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, I mean alive, yeah, right.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: Survive, yeah, yeah, 70% alive.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: I think that they should look at you as having this the solution, not being part of the problem.
- 19:46SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 19:47SPEAKER_04: I've been saying that for years.
- 19:49SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm your solution.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, if people only did what you do, fatalities from plane crashes would go way down.
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: All you gotta do is just survive it.
- 19:57SPEAKER_04: Just survive the plane crash and nobody dies.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: What should travelers do to be ready?
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Because you know, there aren't a lot of I mean, most planes don't crash, right?
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: It's it's rare, but what should travelers do to be ready just in case they're on that you know odd one that does crash?
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: In that case, you know, it's like there's the debate whether you sit up front or you sit in the back.
- 20:18SPEAKER_04: I find, you know, doesn't really matter if you're gonna skid across a runway and into a lake.
- 20:23SPEAKER_04: I prefer to sit right next to a door just so I can get the hell out of there.
- 20:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, so you do the exit rows, huh?
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Good thinking.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 20:32SPEAKER_04: Do the extra light room that that way too, you know, for tall guys.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: And I bet that 50-pound door is no problem when you got that kind of motivation.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: And you know, if they were going to do a movie about you, I'm thinking that it would be someone like Leonardo DiCaprio, you know, that he that would play you.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: Because I remember the movie that he that he made a few years ago, Catch Me If You Can.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: You could use the same name, catch me if you can.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: You're you're you're crashing or crash me if you want someone to catch you.
- 21:01SPEAKER_04: You know, there is a treatment going around Hollywood right now.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: They're trying to get Johnny Knoxville.
- 21:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but he does have the practice.
- 21:07SPEAKER_04: Johnny and I have about the same amount of metal embedded in our bodies in various places.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, that would make sense.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, the acting would be a little better with Leo, I gotta tell you, but uh Johnny does have the practice.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: Maybe Leo doesn't, you know.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: I mean, let's face it, I look more like Leo.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: So well, you do you absolutely do, and uh you your viewers at home can't see him, of course, but he really does, and you look less like Johnny Knoxville than you do Leo.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: If I wasn't listening to your intro, I would have sworn you were Leo in that role.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: Um, Edward Scissors hand scissor hand.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: Wasn't that the one where he was in that?
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: Was that Leo?
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: I think no, that no, Deff, that was that was Johnny Depp.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: Johnny Depp.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so you kind of look a little bit like Johnny Depp, but the scissors part, the metal part.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: I think that that is where the you know it's very similar.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: What you agree, Steve?
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Does have metal both inside and outside.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, because you know, they just got in.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: 17 plane crashes.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: He's he's kind of gotten beat up a few times here, so it doesn't look sharp from here, but I bet it's not real comfortable to walk around with all that.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Is they you I'm sure you set off alarms everywhere you go.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: I'm very clangy.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: Hard to sneak up on people, isn't it?
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 22:16SPEAKER_04: Sounds like I'm wearing spurs.
- 22:18SPEAKER_04: Sounds like a cowboy wearing spurs walking through town.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: That's probably how you know, like if you have a joint problem or a knee problem or something, is if the spur sounds a little off.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: That's how you know a bad coin, it just doesn't sound right.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: That's I bet that's how you know.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: Probably can't feel a thing, although Steve as Steve knows I do have a joint problem.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but but but we digress.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: Any final words for our audience on what it really takes to maybe not just to survive crashes, but what what does it take to really set a Guinness book of world records record without being redundant?
- 22:48SPEAKER_04: Well, I think what you've got to have is again the the best ways to do it is find something that nobody else wants.
- 22:56SPEAKER_04: And get really good at things that people don't like.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: That's the the fastest way to feign that I found is get good at things people don't like.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: You know, Jeff, we're already really good at things that people apparently don't like.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: So I think we're well on our way to a huge success, Jeff.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: Think about it.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: I know, and I had that philosophy way back when I met my wife.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: You know, that was one of the things that you know I prided myself in, and and it's turned out great.
- 23:24SPEAKER_03: Well, not great, but you know, like okay, like you know, like a crash.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Like you know, like yeah, so you're saying like you you start dating your wife because nobody else wanted her?
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: No, I didn't say that.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, good.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, because she she listens to the P O D C A S T, Jeff.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: You probably don't want to see that.
- 23:42unknown: Yeah.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: To clarify this, and Steve, you might want to edit that out when you have a chance.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'll edit out.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: Don't don't worry about that.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: Okay, good.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I'm just I'm just saying that marriage can be a rocky situation, and there are dips and dives and crashes occasionally, and I have been able to survive.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: Again, I'm not at the level of crash, but I'm I'm pretty proud of my survival rate with my marriage.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Put that in, see, because that's that part will go in.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, that'll go in definitely because that's and you know, you know, maybe, maybe Jeff, maybe you could have a Guinness Book of World record record repetitiously redundant about being surviving marriage.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: I think that's true.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: It may be out of date at some point, but yeah, could certainly do that.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: Bob Crash Davis.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Great to have you here in the studio.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: And I I'll tell you, just have a have a safe trip home now.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: Don't you worry about a thing.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: I think you'll be just fine flying out of here.
- 24:35SPEAKER_04: All right, yeah, I'm gonna walk on down to the airport and fly on home.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: Fingers crossed and watch the news tonight.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: The next time you're on our show, I bet you that you'll be uh you'll be over that 20 mark comfortably.
- 24:47SPEAKER_04: It's just wonderful to have people that have that much confidence in your abilities.
- 24:50SPEAKER_04: Well, we do.
- 24:50SPEAKER_04: Oh, we do.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: We do.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: I just you know, I gotta ask before we go, you you hold the record, but who's who's next in line?
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, so is anybody even close to you?
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: Not anymore.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's right, that's right.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: But 12, yes, yeah.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: So 12 is is the closest, but yeah, yeah, it's as good as it's gonna get for that guy.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 25:07SPEAKER_04: There may be an up-and-comer in Ohio.
- 25:10SPEAKER_04: He's learning to fly some Cessnas, so he thinks he can take those down pretty easy, but I got news for him.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: Those bounce a little nicer than he might think, you know.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:21SPEAKER_04: You can bounce that thing right into something that doesn't move.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: It was great to remember that great old show and remember great old Bob Crash Davis, who may have left us too soon.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: I think I have a tear.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: Well, maybe not.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: I think it might be something in my eye, but think but I certainly feel bad.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: I think somebody somebody was burning something in here earlier.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, my eyes are all nuts too.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: When something tragic like this happens, we have to realize that it doesn't just affect Bob.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: Oh no, you know, and his record, it affects everybody who knows him and loves him.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: It affects us.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: And the millions.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Well, let's be honest, Jeff.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: It affects the millions of listeners.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, the millions.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Somehow I ran into Bob's son, Bob Jr.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: I remember that.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's grown up a bit, and Bob was following in his footsteps.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: He's uh working on car crashes crashes, and he when I talked to him, he was over 50.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: And this must be devastating for him.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, I feel bad.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: So it affects everyone, wow, including his wife, the insurance company, right?
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're probably celebrating, but everybody else.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: I just did some really quick research, and I understand that the Guinness Book of World Records record for surviving car crashes is 63.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: So Bob Jr.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: is very close.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, wouldn't that be great if he could, in his father's honor, could get that record.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: You know, Jeff, I think it's appropriate.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: Like we do when we send off anyone.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: Remember when we send off our old producer?
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: When we send off people, we give a toast.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: So take that glass, uh, wipe it off first.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: Jeff, here's the Bob Crash Davis.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: We hardly knew ye.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: Steve, you may want to break the glasses.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: We should.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: You know, and as we break these glasses, I think the only appropriate thing that we can do now while we wait and see what the fate, what Bob's fate is, I think we should make sure that his family has some nice prizes for the fact that we ran that show again.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: So, Johnny, what is Bob Crash Davis's family going to get?
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Right, Steve, we'll be sending Crash's family a laminated ticket stuff from a Pan Am flight from Miami to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: Pan Am Airlines.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: We disappeared along with airplane comfort.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: And for the youngsters in the family, should there be any, we have a certified authentic wings lapel pin, courtesy of Allegheny Air.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: Allegheny, only haters call us agony.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: Least and last, we'll give them the home version of the Steve and Jeff Show so they can remember Crash's appearance and reenact it whenever they want.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: The Carol Bingbong design Steve and Jeff game, available in Select Montgomery Ward and EJ Corvette stores.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: This has been a sunk cost production in association with Why This Productions.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: Be sure and follow or subscribe to the Steve and Jeff Show wherever you listen to podcasts.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: This is Johnny Speaking.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: I'm in a secluded motel room since I had to get out of my car due to a little mishap.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: Some guy ran smack into it, and all he said was, that's 51.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: Good night.
