- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to A Different Worldview with Daryl and Kadeem, a
- 0:03Speaker 1: production of the Black Effect Podcast Network and iHeartRadio. Hey,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I know you. Different Worldview with Daryl Kadeem. Oh, boy.
- 0:19Speaker 1: You know me because I'm Daryl. And I'm Kadeem. That
- 0:22Speaker 1: is who we are.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:24Speaker 1: And here we are with episode two. Do we have
- 0:26Speaker 1: to do this? Yes, we do. Okay. We've got to
- 0:29Speaker 1: do this for at least 144 more episodes. You keep
- 0:32Speaker 1: saying that. That doesn't make anything better, bro. It doesn't
- 0:35Speaker 1: make anything. Look, the whole point is we can't get
- 0:39Speaker 1: fired here. Yeah. We are here until people stop listening.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And I guess the hardest part for me will be
- 0:47Speaker 1: the first 25, 22. You were worried about watching season one, bro?
- 0:56Speaker 1: It was some things. Look, I've never really watched it.
- 1:00Speaker 1: That's the point. I'm saying, I think you're going to
- 1:02Speaker 1: find season one more charming than you think. Look, for
- 1:06Speaker 1: all of the criticism that season one gets, let's remember, like,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Ambitz did say it was just the number two show
- 1:14Speaker 1: on television. It's true.
- 1:15Speaker 3: All I did was deliver them the second highest rated
- 1:17Speaker 3: show on television and got fired for it.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And then they said that they could have put a
- 1:22Speaker 1: bag of garbage up there in the Cosby's shop. Behind
- 1:24Speaker 1: the Cosby's show and it would have been hit. And
- 1:25Speaker 1: it would have been number two.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Not true because they tested other shows in that time
- 1:29Speaker 3: slot and they didn't perform the way we did.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Okay. And then, don't get me started, there's some science
- 1:35Speaker 1: coming later down the road where Our show moved ahead
- 1:39Speaker 1: of the country. This is true. And nobody else did
- 1:41Speaker 1: that on NBC. That's true. But us. Yeah. But here
- 1:45Speaker 1: we are. Yeah.
- 1:46Speaker 3: And we're going to dive into all that because I
- 1:48Speaker 3: think you will find there are Easter eggs in season
- 1:53Speaker 3: one for what was to come in season two.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I think you're going to find some of that. Okay.
- 1:59Speaker 3: And I think if there's an analogy to be made,
- 2:06Speaker 3: Homeboys in outer space.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Yeah, see? Whoa, whoa, where
- 2:12Speaker 1: you going? Where you going? Where you been? Homeboys in
- 2:16Speaker 1: outer space. Is this a shameless plug? Is hated... So
- 2:22Speaker 1: much more than for how bad or good it really was.
- 2:27Speaker 1: But you had to watch. The reputation of Homeboys in
- 2:31Speaker 1: Outer Space is so much worse than the actual show.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So many people say, when they hear about Homeboys in
- 2:38Speaker 1: Outer Space, oh my God, name two episodes. Most people
- 2:42Speaker 1: can't because they never watch. They only know that it
- 2:47Speaker 1: is so maligned that they believe it must have been awful.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And again, let me be clear. I mean, we're just starting. Yeah.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Some of the best advice I got, because I've become
- 3:02Speaker 3: really good friends with Shy McBride.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And before Shy and I were really cool, at the
- 3:08Speaker 1: same time.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Homeboys was on UPN, Shy was starring in The Secret
- 3:13Speaker 3: Diaries of Desmond Pfeiffer.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Oh, right.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Which was about the slaves. Yes. They had a sitcom
- 3:20Speaker 1: about a slave. And everybody said, how about Homeboys? I
- 3:24Speaker 1: remember that. Folks don't even remember it was even on television. Yeah, wow.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Don't even remember it.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And I mean, it was all talking about the Pfeiffer
- 3:33Speaker 3: and the P was silent and all this.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 3:35Speaker 3: So I was, I think we were at the UPN
- 3:40Speaker 3: premiere party for all the new shows. And I asked Shy,
- 3:46Speaker 3: was he getting a lot of heat for Desmond Fiverr
- 3:49Speaker 3: because we were getting all this heat about Homeboys in
- 3:51Speaker 3: Outer Space. And this is before it even aired. So
- 3:54Speaker 3: I said, let me ask you a question. Did you
- 3:57Speaker 3: write Homeboys in Outer Space?
- 3:59Speaker 1: I did not. Do you have an agent? I do.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Did your agent call you with an appointment? He did.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Are you an actor? Yes. Did you agree to go
- 4:10Speaker 1: on the audition? I did. Did you work for it? Yes.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Did you study? Yes. When you went in to perform,
- 4:17Speaker 1: did you do the best work you could do? Yes.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Did they hire you? Yes, they did. Did they pay you? Yes,
- 4:25Speaker 1: they did. Then fuck what everybody else has to say.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I don't give a damn. That's all you're responsible for.
- 4:32Speaker 1: The rest is bullshit and don't listen to it until
- 4:36Speaker 1: you have to get another job and do the same
- 4:38Speaker 1: fucking thing. Some of the best advice I ever got
- 4:42Speaker 1: in my career. I never worried about it again from then.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Never worried about it again. And also just, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 3: here we are talking about whatever. One of my biggest
- 4:54Speaker 3: fans from Homeboys in Outer Space, Roseanne Barr.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Rosie.
- 4:59Speaker 3: I was, the first time I met Roseanne Barr, we're
- 5:03Speaker 3: on the lot at Carsey Warner and I'm coming into
- 5:05Speaker 3: the kitchen and I had just gotten off my motorcycle.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So I had my helmet on my arm And Roseanne
- 5:10Speaker 1: was coming down the street.
- 5:10Speaker 3: She said, oh, just like a man sees a woman
- 5:14Speaker 3: and got something hard between his legs.
- 5:16Speaker 1: What? That was Hello to Roseanne. Roseanne Barr.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yikes.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I remember I was out somewhere and saw Roseanne. And
- 5:25Speaker 3: she said, I'm such a fan of Homeboys in Outer Space.
- 5:28Speaker 3: And I thought she was playing with me.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Then she started naming the episode. Wow. Like, she watched. Okay. And... Her.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Comments to me were, she said, I really thought it
- 5:40Speaker 3: was going to be biting satire like In Living Color.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And that's where it started. Then you guys went a
- 5:47Speaker 1: different direction. I said, yeah, because if you go back
- 5:50Speaker 1: to the very beginning with James Duhon, again, one of
- 5:52Speaker 1: the greatest pleasures in life that I had to work
- 5:55Speaker 1: with James Duhon.
- 5:58Speaker 3: He was such a kind man. And, you know, it's
- 6:01Speaker 3: James Duhon. But we were doing that spoof off of
- 6:05Speaker 3: our mechanic. was James Doohan. So when Morris would say,
- 6:09Speaker 3: you know, I need more from the hootie.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Captain, I'm giving it all to these guys. You know,
- 6:16Speaker 1: James would give us that. UPN was the subsidiary of Paramount.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Paramount sent a cease and desist letter to UPN saying,
- 6:29Speaker 1: saying that we were infringing on Star Trek IP, and
- 6:34Speaker 1: they were going to sue us if we kept using
- 6:38Speaker 1: James Doohan in that capacity. Wow. And that put an
- 6:41Speaker 1: end to James Doohan on our show. And then we
- 6:47Speaker 1: went to, I think it was the first episode where
- 6:51Speaker 1: we landed on this remote planet And they were so
- 6:56Speaker 1: far off in the galaxy, only one satellite beam was
- 7:00Speaker 1: coming to them from Bet. And so that's all they
- 7:04Speaker 1: had seen for decades. And when Morris and Ty landed,
- 7:12Speaker 1: all these people rushed to Hoopty. We thought they were
- 7:14Speaker 1: going to try to kill him. And when they saw us,
- 7:19Speaker 1: they all bowed down like we were gods. Because the
- 7:23Speaker 1: signal from BET was B-E-T. So the only signal they
- 7:28Speaker 1: was getting was all black comedians. And all they knew
- 7:30Speaker 1: was black folks, so they thought we were gods. And
- 7:33Speaker 1: they saw two black folks, they were like, oh!
- 7:36Speaker 3: So some executive at UPN decided, that's the show. Every week,
- 7:41Speaker 3: they're going to crash land on another planet where this happens.
- 7:44Speaker 3: So it went from... trying to spoof, you know, and
- 7:49Speaker 3: have some commentary.
- 7:51Speaker 1: About black people in space, like what Roseanne liked.
- 7:54Speaker 3: So all that to say, everyone loves season two when
- 8:00Speaker 3: Debbie comes on board so much that there are a
- 8:03Speaker 3: lot of folks that say, but if you go back
- 8:05Speaker 3: and watch season one, which is what we're going to do,
- 8:08Speaker 3: it may not be as bad as you think.
- 8:11Speaker 1: That was the point. Your mouth, God's ears. What have
- 8:18Speaker 1: I gotten myself into?
- 8:19Speaker 4: Look, look, everyone.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I've told everyone, notwithstanding, and we're going to get into
- 8:27Speaker 3: some of the episodes. We know that, look, they put
- 8:29Speaker 3: a pig nose on one of the most beautiful women
- 8:31Speaker 3: in the world. And you wondered, what was the point
- 8:33Speaker 3: of that?
- 8:34Speaker 2: Right?
- 8:35Speaker 1: But at the same time, I believed they loved all
- 8:38Speaker 1: the characters, even if they didn't love all the storytelling.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And there's some of the storytelling that's very good, though. Some.
- 8:49Speaker 1: You're going to... You said it, y'all, not me. You're
- 8:54Speaker 1: going out with a girl with her own apartment.
- 8:59Speaker 2: See?
- 9:00Speaker 1: That was season one. Yes, it was. Peggy... Yes! That's
- 9:05Speaker 1: season one, player. That's... Her name from Square Peg. No, but...
- 9:13Speaker 1: Ron Howard and his partner... Glazer. Brian Glazer. Brian Glazer
- 9:21Speaker 1: called me after that episode. Oh, is that right? And
- 9:24Speaker 1: I had my first meeting with a studio exec. Is
- 9:27Speaker 1: that right? I had no idea what to do at
- 9:30Speaker 1: a meeting with a studio exec. I kind of sat
- 9:32Speaker 1: there and was like, it's a dope-ass office. Holy shit,
- 9:36Speaker 1: you can see me. downtown i didn't know i didn't
- 9:42Speaker 1: know what to do he was on the phone i
- 9:44Speaker 1: was just kind of chilling and looking around and i
- 9:47Speaker 1: was like wow brian yeah and he wanted to talk
- 9:51Speaker 1: about that episode no kidding and that was how i
- 9:54Speaker 1: got in his room. I was like, yeah, I would
- 9:56Speaker 1: love to do something like Back to the Future.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Let's go. Never heard from him again. But yeah, that
- 10:03Speaker 1: was that episode. Never heard from him. Brian Grazier, if
- 10:06Speaker 1: you're out there.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 1: What happened? What happened? I don't know. For real. We
- 10:11Speaker 1: should have another conversation. You know what? That reminds me.
- 10:16Speaker 3: We've had, excuse me, in the annals of Hollywood, A
- 10:20Speaker 3: lot of folks are well-meaning. And things don't always work out.
- 10:24Speaker 1: You go and meet folks and you just want to see.
- 10:27Speaker 1: But I remember when we were having the conversation with
- 10:29Speaker 1: the two guys who had seen Shaun of the Dead.
- 10:34Speaker 1: It was so fun. They were like, you guys. We
- 10:37Speaker 1: were like, Shaun of the Dead. We want to make
- 10:39Speaker 1: a movie with you guys. I remember that. And y'all
- 10:42Speaker 1: should be just like that same sort of funny chemistry.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Some horror and that sort of thing. We were like, Oh,
- 10:49Speaker 1: hell yeah. Let's do that. This sounds like fun. Never just.
- 10:53Speaker 1: What happened? We're still waiting to do. What happened though?
- 10:57Speaker 1: We're still waiting to do Shaun of the Hood. Shaun
- 11:01Speaker 1: of the Hood never came about. Ramon of the Hood.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Ramon of the Hood. Ramon of the Dead. It never
- 11:09Speaker 1: worked out. Shaun and Ramon of the Dead. Shout out
- 11:12Speaker 1: to my cousins.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Yeah, we've had plenty of meetings like that about what
- 11:16Speaker 3: could be. But that's another reason why we're doing this.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, hell yeah. We're going to find out. We're going
- 11:23Speaker 1: to talk about those some guns that never called us back.
- 11:28Speaker 3: If we're talking about first episodes, is there a show
- 11:30Speaker 3: that you loved that you thought the first season was and,
- 11:34Speaker 3: but then it became great? Any series like that?
- 11:40Speaker 1: No, it's funny. Usually started high in the pilot. Yeah,
- 11:44Speaker 1: there are a lot like that. And then kind of
- 11:45Speaker 1: goes a little like, eh... They lost me after about
- 11:49Speaker 1: three or four. You know what? You've got me trying
- 11:53Speaker 1: to work. I'm trying to work through Severance.
- 11:55Speaker 5: Oh, man.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Because the first season, I'm trying to plow through. Oh,
- 11:59Speaker 1: it's a slow burn, but so good. Exactly. That's what
- 12:02Speaker 1: I mean. And the fact that you have at least
- 12:06Speaker 1: two seasons, because I got pissed because they told me
- 12:08Speaker 1: to watch it, and then there's a giant cliffhanger. Yeah.
- 12:12Speaker 1: So I was pissed because I have been from about
- 12:16Speaker 1: episode one four or five on, I clicked into something
- 12:20Speaker 1: and was like, when are we going to, and when
- 12:22Speaker 1: is it going to, and then you kind of get
- 12:24Speaker 1: that with 30 seconds to go. And I was like,
- 12:27Speaker 1: you mother, I called my agent. Why did you tell
- 12:31Speaker 1: me to watch this shit? You know, I don't like
- 12:33Speaker 1: this kind of shit. Wait till next season to figure out. Yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 1: But Severance is good. Severance, Severance really is one of
- 12:42Speaker 1: those shows. And you know me, I watched the first season.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Fool me once, I haven't watched since. I'll wait till
- 12:47Speaker 1: they're all uploaded. I'll wait till the series finale and
- 12:50Speaker 1: then I'll watch. I haven't seen a frame of Game
- 12:53Speaker 1: of Thrones. I did the same thing. I waited until
- 12:58Speaker 1: two months before the finale. Yeah. And then I watched
- 13:01Speaker 1: a season a week. And I got through all of
- 13:05Speaker 1: them and I was right on time. I was 45
- 13:08Speaker 1: minutes behind everybody watching the finale. And I loved it.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I didn't have that two or three year wait where
- 13:13Speaker 1: everybody was like, ah, this is awful. What's going on?
- 13:15Speaker 1: What's happening next? I just was like, whew, this was
- 13:18Speaker 1: a ride. Yeah. I'm done. Thank you. Well done.
- 13:23Speaker 3: See, I need to do that on a plane and
- 13:26Speaker 3: get through all those seasons.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I can't do that. Game of Thrones need to be like,
- 13:31Speaker 1: that need to be big. Game of Thrones? Sure.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Okay, well, I think of where I have dedicated time
- 13:38Speaker 3: to binge like that. And I don't do multiple screens
- 13:42Speaker 3: on a plane. I watch a dedicated piece of something.
- 13:45Speaker 3: But I'm still trying to think of things that were
- 13:48Speaker 3: first season, slow burn, where I was like, stick with it.
- 13:51Speaker 3: It's going to take a minute.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, different world.
- 13:56Speaker 6: Right?
- 13:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Stick with it. It's going to get there. We're coming
- 14:02Speaker 1: around to something eventually, maybe. I don't know. But if
- 14:06Speaker 1: you hang in and give us a chance, we might
- 14:08Speaker 1: have something for you in season two.
- 14:11Speaker 7: This is such shade and such reverence at the same time.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Really?
- 14:17Speaker 1: I don't know if everyone out there is really ready
- 14:19Speaker 1: for that. That was probably more honesty than you really wanted. Listen,
- 14:23Speaker 1: I said this to my executive producer. Which one? We
- 14:28Speaker 1: only have one. Oh, here. Yes. No, no, no. My
- 14:33Speaker 1: executive producer, I say, Debbie Allen. Yes. Is responsible. Yes.
- 14:42Speaker 1: All about the Benjamins remix and what's the scenario remix aside. Yes.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I think for the greatest remix in the history of
- 14:52Speaker 1: the world. Hmm. She took an existing thing. Yes. Different world,
- 14:58Speaker 1: season one. Existing characters. Yep. Remixed it. Yes. Into what is,
- 15:08Speaker 1: has become the thing that inspired thousands to go to school,
- 15:14Speaker 1: tens of thousands to go to school, like changed people's lives.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And I don't think we were on that trajectory.
- 15:22Speaker 4: No.
- 15:22Speaker 1: In season one. Season one was not going to have
- 15:26Speaker 1: that kind of a... It was the remix. Yes. Remix. Yeah.
- 15:32Speaker 1: The greatest remix in the history of the world. But,
- 15:35Speaker 1: you know, I think you need to give, one, no
- 15:41Speaker 1: pushback against a syllable of what you said right there,
- 15:45Speaker 1: but also... Susan Fales. Oh, yeah. Had a lot to
- 15:48Speaker 1: do with that. Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 15:51Speaker 3: And, you know, then you can go down to all
- 15:53Speaker 3: the other writers in the room and, you know, we
- 15:55Speaker 3: can talk about Yvette and Glenn Baerbaum and.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Mimi and Jeanette and Gary Miller.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Gary.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah, we can talk about everybody that came in. Orlando Jones.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Orlando Jones, who started off as a writer. Reggie Rock Bythewood,
- 16:07Speaker 1: Gina Prince Bythewood.
- 16:10Speaker 3: So many folks don't know Orlando started as an apprentice
- 16:12Speaker 3: writer on our show.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I know. Rob Lewis.
- 16:17Speaker 7: Yep.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Rob. Yeah. Rob Edwards. Rob Edwards. Sorry. Rob Lewis. My
- 16:22Speaker 1: other brother from Syracuse. Yeah. Rob Edwards. Princess and the Bride. Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 1: So that's, that's impressive. Let's get into it. So we're
- 16:38Speaker 1: going to tee up 1987, 830 on Thursday. Yeah. First
- 16:45Speaker 1: episode of A Different World, season one. Reconcilable Differences is
- 16:49Speaker 1: the name of the episode. Let's be sure. Is that
- 16:52Speaker 1: the title? Man, I just said what the name of
- 16:54Speaker 1: the episode is. Don't play with me. Hopefully, you're going
- 16:58Speaker 1: to be here the whole time. All right, let's look.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Tell them to wrap it up. Let's go. Oh, man. Oh, man.
- 17:04Speaker 1: And there are those credits.
- 17:05Speaker 8: Credits.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Really good credits. And the lettering. Look at the colors.
- 17:10Speaker 1: The color on her. Look at y'all. Fantastic. Marissa's hair
- 17:16Speaker 1: is red. Everybody thought my name, because of the credits,
- 17:21Speaker 1: everybody thought my name was Jasmine Guy. Because they show Dawn,
- 17:26Speaker 1: they show Marissa, and then they show me, and they
- 17:28Speaker 1: say Jasmine Guy. That's hilarious. Wait, wait, that ain't me.
- 17:33Speaker 1: That's not Loretta Devine. But then I get my own little, hey,
- 17:35Speaker 1: there I am, running in. That's got to be him.
- 17:38Speaker 1: With the little flip up in the front.
- 17:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Those glasses in the credits, those didn't flip up, did they? Yes. Oh. Yes.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Those are the ones Anne Beats gave them to me.
- 17:50Speaker 1: And then my favorite moment in the credits was right here.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Me and Lisa just laughing, and then they said, action.
- 17:56Speaker 1: And then we had to go and walk and do
- 17:59Speaker 1: whatever the action was laid out for us to do.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Lisa loves it. Look at you playing piano. Yeah, I
- 18:04Speaker 1: don't play piano. Clearly. I don't play piano. How would
- 18:07Speaker 1: you know from that? Exactly. I was doing it. Shout out,
- 18:10Speaker 1: Anne Beats. Rest in peace. Oh, snap.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Wait, if we pause there for two seconds, I don't know.
- 18:19Speaker 3: The first frame of A Different World is Kadeem Hardison.
- 18:25Speaker 3: The first frame of this series ever is not even
- 18:28Speaker 3: Lisa Bonet. It is Kadeem Hardison.
- 18:31Speaker 1: From here, I went right to the bathroom, bro. I
- 18:34Speaker 1: went right to the bathroom. So not only is that wild,
- 18:36Speaker 1: but also the last frame of A Different World is
- 18:41Speaker 1: It's me. Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Yep.
- 18:44Speaker 1: That is hilarious. That's crazy. That's crazy.
- 18:46Speaker 7: In episode 144, the last thing you see when Dwayne
- 18:50Speaker 7: Woodley go off is my face.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Then you was acting up a storm. I was crying
- 18:54Speaker 1: like a baby by then. So we'll have to get there.
- 18:57Speaker 1: But that's unreal that we book in the series. That's crazy.
- 19:01Speaker 1: That's nuts. All right, let's go. Trained and untrained. Yeah,
- 19:04Speaker 1: it's pretty good. Oh, I was about to say beautiful and,
- 19:07Speaker 1: you know, four-eyed. Anything at all.
- 19:09Speaker 5: Anything you can think of.
- 19:10Speaker 1: You know, you may need someone to talk to or
- 19:13Speaker 1: someone to hold your hand. This isn't bad.
- 19:15Speaker 6: Someone to hold your other hand.
- 19:16Speaker 1: But it's right around the time where my hands start going.
- 19:20Speaker 1: How's it going? My name's Dwayne Wayne.
- 19:21Speaker 6: I'm the official greeter.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Of the dorm orientation. That homie was so thirsty. Tell
- 19:25Speaker 1: me something. Why do you waste your time here when
- 19:26Speaker 1: there are magazine covers begging for your countenance?
- 19:30Speaker 6: Countenance.
- 19:31Speaker 1: You know, that's like a face. Directed by Ellen Salkin.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Dwayne Wayne. We have to have Ellen.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Dorm orientation committee. I didn't know we had.
- 19:44Speaker 2: One.
- 19:46Speaker 1: And this is one where they took my sneakers. and
- 19:51Speaker 1: tacked them down so they weren't so white on camera
- 19:54Speaker 1: and I have one of.
- 19:55Speaker 7: The white laces see the.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Hands this is a nervous act folks when the hands
- 20:05Speaker 1: start jumping around like that uncontrollable that's my nerves That's
- 20:10Speaker 1: my nerves. And you can't really hide it. And there
- 20:14Speaker 1: she is. And there is a God. There is a God. Yeah.
- 20:20Speaker 1: You remember all of it. Yeah, yeah, I did. I mean, yeah.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I haven't seen it, but I remember that. Oh, no,
- 20:25Speaker 1: that's not it. Something with a D.
- 20:36Speaker 6: Denise, and this is my luggage.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Oh, well, let me help you with that.
- 20:39Speaker 6: I could just kick myself for not thinking of this earlier.
- 20:41Speaker 5: This time with no respect at all. Okay. Out, out, out.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'm going, Denise.
- 20:45Speaker 6: It's my pleasure.
- 20:46Speaker 5: I'll see you.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Oh, hi.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Thanks. It's so nice to be in this dorm.
- 20:50Speaker 9: You know, compared to freshman dorms, this place is like paradise.
- 20:53Speaker 6: Oh, it's so nice to meet you.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Don't lose that enthusiasm. Look at Devon. Oh, my God.
- 21:10Speaker 2: You know, my mom used to live in this dorm.
- 21:12Speaker 5: And my dad used to live on those steps. Well,
- 21:15Speaker 5: times haven't changed. Let's see, Huxtable.
- 21:18Speaker 9: Huxtable, you're in 20Y with Delisa Vinson.
- 21:24Speaker 5: And I think she's here already. Oh, great. I can't
- 21:26Speaker 5: wait to meet her. Thanks, Mrs.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Rollins.
- 21:27Speaker 6: Oh, the name is Stevie.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Thanks, Stevie.
- 21:31Speaker 1: And there she is. There's your guy. So she didn't
- 21:42Speaker 1: start as a freshman, right? Denise was already a sophomore? No,
- 21:48Speaker 1: she was a freshman, too. She said she was just arriving.
- 21:54Speaker 1: But how did Whitley and her know each other? She
- 21:56Speaker 1: just came down and introduced herself. Oh, okay.
- 22:00Speaker 3: What's wild is the whole story that Jasmine, his name
- 22:05Speaker 3: is in the opening credits, but she wasn't in the
- 22:09Speaker 3: title sequence.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Because we shot that on the weekend, and then they
- 22:14Speaker 1: cast her Monday. Monday morning, she went from the table read,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I mean, from the audition, right to the table read.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Downstairs to the table. Yeah, so she wasn't there for
- 22:24Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday when we shot the credits.
- 22:29Speaker 5: Well, of course, that alone doesn't make her a bad person.
- 22:32Speaker 9: It's just that I've also heard she's had a brush
- 22:35Speaker 9: with the law. What?
- 22:37Speaker 5: Brush with the law?
- 22:39Speaker 9: Of course, I don't think a prestigious institution like Hillman
- 22:42Speaker 9: would admit criminals to you.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Erica, welcome back, sweetie.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Welcome back to me. So Whitley wasn't her friend. Right. Yeah,
- 22:54Speaker 1: because she said, how's your summer? Yeah, welcome back.
- 22:58Speaker 5: Hi. Hi.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Don't lose. Don't need to lose.
- 23:02Speaker 5: You must be 26. Oh, I didn't mean that. You
- 23:06Speaker 5: don't look 26.
- 23:06Speaker 6: You know, you don't even look a day over. Why
- 23:08Speaker 6: don't we just start over?
- 23:10Speaker 2: Okay, great.
- 23:11Speaker 5: I'd like that.
- 23:12Speaker 6: Hi, I'm Jaleesa.
- 23:13Speaker 5: Hi, Jaleesa.
- 23:14Speaker 6: I'm single.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Nobody else is doing crazy shit with their hands like
- 23:17Speaker 1: I was. Well, they a trait. You both. Teenagers. These are,
- 23:24Speaker 1: you know, right in the divine stage actors. Yes, I
- 23:29Speaker 1: was married.
- 23:29Speaker 6: It lasted for two years.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I had no children while we.
- 23:32Speaker 6: Were married, but my husband did.
- 23:34Speaker 1: That's why I would report.
- 23:38Speaker 6: Anything else you want to know?
- 23:39Speaker 5: No, just let me deal with what you just told me. Gee,
- 23:46Speaker 5: you got a lot of books.
- 23:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I hear they're big on that in college.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Hey, you know, you were the first 26-year-old divorced person
- 23:56Speaker 2: that I've ever lived with. Oh, wow, I should probably ask,
- 24:02Speaker 2: have you picked a bed?
- 24:03Speaker 6: Yeah, that one.
- 24:07Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Are all those clothes yours, or did you mug Joan
- 24:11Speaker 4: Collins on the way over here?
- 24:15Speaker 5: Funny, really funny.
- 24:16Speaker 1: The shade between the two of them off the top, huh?
- 24:20Speaker 2: Oh.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Gee, are you always that organized? Oh, basically.
- 24:23Speaker 6: I just can't live around... clutter.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I mean, either.
- 24:34Speaker 6: I can't live around that, either.
- 24:36Speaker 5: Oh, but my sister Vanessa made this for me. See?
- 24:38Speaker 1: Vanessa.
- 24:39Speaker 5: They're dental retainers.
- 24:40Speaker 1: You're dropping all the Huxley names.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:42Speaker 1: It was a going-away present.
- 24:44Speaker 5: You should have said, my.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Executive producer made this for me. Wouldn't she have just given.
- 24:47Speaker 6: You a watch?
- 24:54Speaker 1: Michelle. Michelle. You knew all the extras. You knew all
- 25:01Speaker 1: the extras. Oh, damn. Word, shorty. How is she sick
- 25:06Speaker 1: of you? It's only the second time she saw you.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 25:08Speaker 8: Word.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Because I'm coming with hands. Look at her hands. Won't stop.
- 25:13Speaker 1: And you read this, you're going to know it, too.
- 25:18Speaker 6: I think that says it all.
- 25:22Speaker 5: To whom it may concern? That's you.
- 25:26Speaker 1: It concerns you. Oh, man. Florida is hard to watch.
- 25:30Speaker 2: If your idea of heaven is driving down a winding
- 25:33Speaker 2: country road in France and an elegant racing machine with
- 25:37Speaker 2: soft music on the stereo, a couple of Philly cheesesteaks
- 25:40Speaker 2: in the glove compartment.
- 25:43Speaker 6: Okay, just take it and read it at your leisure
- 25:47Speaker 6: and call me. And if I'm not in, I'll be
- 25:51Speaker 6: picking up the cheese sink.
- 25:54Speaker 5: Oh, hi. Denise.
- 25:56Speaker 6: Come on in.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 25:58Speaker 1: What are we doing with you?
- 26:00Speaker 5: So, what brings you here?
- 26:01Speaker 1: She's playing with her son. His son, yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 5: Why are you wearing those on your head?
- 26:07Speaker 6: I forgot to tell you.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I'm a Martian.
- 26:09Speaker 6: Oh, you are?
- 26:11Speaker 5: Oh, hello.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Masters of the Universe. That's his shirt that you can't
- 26:18Speaker 1: read with the upscaling. Now, the question is, who's the
- 26:21Speaker 1: young man? Oh, God, what was his name? I don't know,
- 26:25Speaker 1: but I would love to see where he is right now.
- 26:28Speaker 2: See?
- 26:29Speaker 1: That's a guest we should be having on the podcast
- 26:31Speaker 1: right now. See where that young man is and what
- 26:33Speaker 1: his career's doing.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Watch me find out he's Brian Grace's partner.
- 26:40Speaker 1: That's little Donald Glover there. Y'all didn't know that? Right?
- 26:46Speaker 9: I guess this is no time to be a Martian.
- 26:49Speaker 2: I know this probably sounds like I'm overreacting, but, you know,
- 26:52Speaker 2: my dad always says, um, if you feel strongly about something,
- 26:56Speaker 2: then just to follow your instinct.
- 26:58Speaker 5: After one day?
- 26:59Speaker 2: Well, he also says not to procrastinate.
- 27:02Speaker 5: Your father's very talkative.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Well, Stevie, you know, I come from a very big family,
- 27:11Speaker 2: and I get along with all sorts of people.
- 27:13Speaker 5: I really do, but I don't know.
- 27:14Speaker 6: Jaleesa's different.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Everything I say, everything seems to rub her the wrong way.
- 27:18Speaker 2: I just don't think that girl likes me.
- 27:20Speaker 5: Oh, it's just been one day. Now, Denise, unless the
- 27:25Speaker 5: woman is a.
- 27:26Speaker 6: Criminal, you two should be able to find a way
- 27:29Speaker 6: to live together.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Unless she's a criminal. Is there something.
- 27:33Speaker 2: About Julissa that no one is telling me?
- 27:35Speaker 5: Denise, this is college. This is not computer dating. There
- 27:38Speaker 5: are no perfect matches. I know, but this is really,
- 27:42Speaker 5: really a bad match. I just don't think that we
- 27:44Speaker 5: were meant to be together.
- 27:45Speaker 1: They have no idea what's going on. Yeah, exactly. Whitley.
- 27:51Speaker 5: Whitley Gilbert.
- 27:55Speaker 1: He had so much style on the show, bro. Just
- 27:57Speaker 1: like her whole fit. He always was put together so well.
- 28:01Speaker 1: A lot of that's her. Man. I mean. And I
- 28:06Speaker 1: bought every line she ever said, like. Situation. I never,
- 28:10Speaker 1: none of it, you know, I don't know. People weren't like, ah,
- 28:13Speaker 1: Denise is the character. They like this character more, that
- 28:18Speaker 1: character more. And I just thought she was the Mary
- 28:21Speaker 1: Tyler Moore that kind of we all revolved around. For
- 28:27Speaker 1: all the other folks at the news station. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:30Speaker 1: She was the one centerpiece that we all were allowed
- 28:34Speaker 1: to be goofy and silly and southern and a criminal
- 28:38Speaker 1: or whatever that means. But she was anchoring.
- 28:42Speaker 6: You were talking to Stevie about me.
- 28:44Speaker 5: Well, all Stevie said was, you know, how important.
- 28:48Speaker 2: She thought it was that we got along.
- 28:49Speaker 6: You asked for a new roommate, didn't you?
- 28:51Speaker 4: No.
- 28:52Speaker 5: What? Well, okay, yeah, but, you know, I've changed my mind.
- 28:57Speaker 5: I am perfectly happy with you.
- 28:59Speaker 6: You know, I don't believe you.
- 29:01Speaker 4: You went to talk to Stevie about changing roommates behind
- 29:04Speaker 4: my back without even asking me?
- 29:05Speaker 5: Well, okay, I admit that I was wrong, but I
- 29:09Speaker 5: was just following my father's advice.
- 29:11Speaker 6: Oh, I'm sure your father told you to be selfish, rude,
- 29:14Speaker 6: and sneaky. Oh, no, not exactly in those words. Fox,
- 29:20Speaker 6: you're worse than I thought.
- 29:22Speaker 5: I'm worse than you thought. What were you thinking?
- 29:25Speaker 4: That you're a spoiled, bougie, rich kid with more clothes
- 29:28Speaker 4: than brains who's going to be impossible for me to
- 29:30Speaker 4: get along with.
- 29:31Speaker 5: Oh, well, is that right, Julissa?
- 29:33Speaker 2: Well, you don't have to worry about that anymore because
- 29:35Speaker 2: it just so happens I do.
- 29:37Speaker 5: Have a choice of roommates, okay?
- 29:38Speaker 1: Oh, really?
- 29:39Speaker 2: Yeah, really.
- 29:30Speaker 6: That's Whitley. That was off to a rocky start right there.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I don't remember.
- 29:32Speaker 5: I would say cut to the classroom. We should be
- 29:33Speaker 5: in the classroom. No, we're in school.
- 29:58Speaker 1: All the perfumes. All the perfumes. We have landed. Oh,
- 30:05Speaker 1: that isn't even Whitley Gilbert. No, it's her room. She's
- 30:10Speaker 1: moving in with Whitley. Sure enough, that is Whitley's room. Yeah.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Do you need some help?
- 30:16Speaker 5: Just put them all around my bed.
- 30:21Speaker 9: I just hate shopping alone. I can never decide what
- 30:24Speaker 9: I want, so I just buy everything.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Oh.
- 30:29Speaker 5: Me too.
- 30:30Speaker 9: I'm just sorry I couldn't find a wheelchair.
- 30:32Speaker 5: A wheelchair?
- 30:34Speaker 9: If you put one in the back seat of your car,
- 30:35Speaker 9: it's about the only way you can find a place
- 30:37Speaker 9: to park that's not in the boonies.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Oh, Whitley, that's terrible. Well, should I be punished because
- 30:45Speaker 5: I can walk?
- 30:48Speaker 1: She got to say the worst shit.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Well, Whitley, life has punished you enough.
- 30:54Speaker 9: I just can't tell you how thrilled I am that
- 30:56Speaker 9: we're going to be rooming together.
- 30:58Speaker 1: You and I can have a ball.
- 31:01Speaker 5: Listen, do you know how to do foot massages?
- 31:05Speaker 1: I didn't give him pointed toes. Word up.
- 31:09Speaker 5: What a.
- 31:12Speaker 4: Shame.
- 31:14Speaker 9: You know, Denise, when Stevie first approached me about extending
- 31:17Speaker 9: my hospitality to you, I was somewhat taken aback. Then
- 31:22Speaker 9: I found out that you come from a fine family.
- 31:24Speaker 9: I mean, my dad is a judge and your dad
- 31:28Speaker 9: is a what?
- 31:29Speaker 5: A dentist.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Close.
- 31:31Speaker 6: He's an obstetrician and gynecologist.
- 31:34Speaker 5: My, how interesting.
- 31:39Speaker 9: This year is gonna be so much fun.
- 31:42Speaker 5: What is that?
- 31:43Speaker 1: Oh, this.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Well, this is my sister Vanessa made this for me.
- 31:47Speaker 5: It's made out of an old dental retainer.
- 31:48Speaker 9: Those things have been in people's.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Mouths.
- 31:53Speaker 6: Just my mouth, Whitley.
- 31:56Speaker 9: Well, I'm going to go take a shower.
- 31:59Speaker 5: I feel like Miss Greedy City.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Miss Greedy City.
- 32:04Speaker 5: Thanks, Will. Silly me, I almost forgot.
- 32:07Speaker 2: What's that?
- 32:08Speaker 5: It's a lock for the phone.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Oh, damn.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Bye-bye, roomie.
- 32:18Speaker 5: Bye, roomie.
- 32:21Speaker 1: First imitation of Whitney's accent. Mm-hmm. Oh, now it's me again. Oh,
- 32:32Speaker 1: now it's me. Collar up. What kind of dance I
- 32:36Speaker 1: was doing, French fries. I don't know what kind of dance.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I don't know what kind of dance I was doing.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Just listen to the music, bro. We had nothing. Yeah,
- 32:46Speaker 1: that's the thing. But look at the pit. Yeah, look
- 32:49Speaker 1: at the staircase of the pit. Coming down.
- 32:56Speaker 5: We got.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Some white folks in there.
- 33:02Speaker 7: We got white folks in the background getting their groove on.
- 33:06Speaker 1: At a helmet. Why ain't y'all working in the pit?
- 33:08Speaker 1: In the pit. Oh, he's working behind the counter?
- 33:11Speaker 6: Yes.
- 33:12Speaker 1: And doing the whop.
- 33:16Speaker 6: Completely honest with each other.
- 33:18Speaker 5: I couldn't agree more.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Oh, well, good.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Good, because I feel that if we're to get along,
- 33:27Speaker 2: then we've really got to respect each other's rights.
- 33:30Speaker 5: Denise, look at that table over there.
- 33:34Speaker 6: Whitley, I'm trying to talk to you.
- 33:35Speaker 9: The one in the baggy chinos can't take his eyes
- 33:38Speaker 9: off you.
- 33:44Speaker 5: I think he's looking at me.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Wow, look at the shade. Hi, I'm Chip. Chip St.
- 33:50Speaker 9: Charles.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Hi, Chip.
- 33:51Speaker 5: I'm Whitney. Whitney Gilbert.
- 33:53Speaker 6: And what's your name?
- 33:55Speaker 1: Oh, Denise. Denise.
- 34:05Speaker 6: That's a lovely name.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 34:06Speaker 5: St. Charles, St.
- 34:07Speaker 9: Charles.
- 34:08Speaker 5: Are you one of the Atlanta St. Charleses? Because my sister.
- 34:11Speaker 9: Went to a cotillion with a Julian St.
- 34:14Speaker 7: Charles.
- 34:14Speaker 5: And that would be your brother by any chance, would it?
- 34:17Speaker 5: I'm from Seattle.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Rains a lot there, doesn't it?
- 34:21Speaker 5: Denise, would you like to dance?
- 34:25Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Thanks, Chip.
- 34:26Speaker 5: I'd love to.
- 34:29Speaker 6: I'm one of those Brooklyn Huxtables. Hey there, my name's
- 34:32Speaker 6: Dwayne Wayne. You know, for you to be sitting here.
- 34:34Speaker 1: All alone like this, it pains me. Why are you
- 34:37Speaker 1: all alone?
- 34:38Speaker 5: Oh, shut up and let's dance.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Whitley and Dwayne from the first episode? In the pilot.
- 34:45Speaker 2: What?
- 34:46Speaker 1: In the pilot. What dances are we doing? What is
- 34:52Speaker 1: everybody doing? Oh, my gosh. See, it's a nervous act
- 35:00Speaker 1: of putting his hands in his pockets to keep him
- 35:03Speaker 1: from acting up a storm without his control.
- 35:05Speaker 5: Just continue to get the top of my convertible closed.
- 35:07Speaker 6: Oh, no problem.
- 35:09Speaker 9: Dwayne, you'll have many more chances to be nice to me,
- 35:11Speaker 9: I promise, but I need a man here.
- 35:18Speaker 6: Well, I guess I could do it.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Could you, Chip?
- 35:21Speaker 5: I'm just afraid of my catch of chilling and not airing.
- 35:24Speaker 9: I wouldn't want to give anything to my new roomie.
- 35:27Speaker 5: Oh, I think you're giving it to me pretty good.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Wow.
- 35:30Speaker 5: I was just around the corner.
- 35:33Speaker 9: Your arm is just one big muscle.
- 35:38Speaker 6: Your arm is one big muscle?
- 35:41Speaker 1: The woman left me standing here on the dance floor alone.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Whatever happened to shibbles? You had a lovely performance where
- 35:53Speaker 1: you basically said nothing. Jesus. It don't work. I was like, why?
- 35:57Speaker 1: You're the highest paid expert in that scene. Why? Why
- 36:00Speaker 1: am I talking? Why am I here?
- 36:03Speaker 9: Ah.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Oh, boy. This is the first episode.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:09Speaker 1: We have yet to hit a classroom. I know. And
- 36:13Speaker 1: we were... They shot two episodes before I got there.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Two or three. Yes. Two or three before. And then
- 36:23Speaker 1: they shot... went back. Cut us in.
- 36:27Speaker 5: Yes.
- 36:27Speaker 3: We haven't even gotten to that part yet. We're still
- 36:29Speaker 3: first one, but yes. They had shot a couple before
- 36:32Speaker 3: Dwayne was cast and Whitley was cast. They were added afterwards.
- 36:35Speaker 9: Yep.
- 36:57Speaker 6: What are you doing here?
- 36:58Speaker 5: Well, what does it look like I'm doing here?
- 37:01Speaker 4: Well, from the way you're rolling back and forth, I'd
- 37:03Speaker 4: say an impression of Stevie Wonder.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Shout out, Stevie.
- 37:08Speaker 5: I'm trying to get some sleep, Teresa.
- 37:10Speaker 6: Well, you know they have beds for that now.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I have a perfectly good reason for being down here, okay?
- 37:16Speaker 6: Oh, let me guess.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Whitley? No, Whitley and I are doing just fine. In fact,
- 37:23Speaker 2: Whitley and I went dancing tonight at the pit. I
- 37:26Speaker 2: even met a really nice guy. He's fixing Whitley's car
- 37:30Speaker 2: right now. But we're doing fine, just fine.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Really?
- 37:36Speaker 5: I mean, so what if the girl only uses a
- 37:38Speaker 5: bar of soap once? Or doesn't eat cheese?
- 37:44Speaker 2: Or allow anyone else to eat cheese in the rooms?
- 37:48Speaker 2: So what if this girl has got to fall asleep
- 37:51Speaker 2: to the sound of crickets?
- 37:53Speaker 5: I mean, she's entitled, right?
- 37:55Speaker 6: She doesn't let you eat cheese?
- 37:57Speaker 2: Hey, there are plenty of places on this campus where
- 38:01Speaker 2: I can eat cheese, okay? Fine, good.
- 38:04Speaker 6: I'm gonna go to bed. Fine.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Eat cheese?
- 38:07Speaker 5: Before you go, can you just do me one little favor?
- 38:10Speaker 2: What?
- 38:10Speaker 1: Take me with you!
- 38:14Speaker 5: She's driving me nuts! She locks the phone, she steals men! Denise, please!
- 38:18Speaker 1: She locks the phone, she steals men.
- 38:22Speaker 5: She doesn't eat cheese. She won't let me eat pizza
- 38:25Speaker 5: in bed.
- 38:25Speaker 1: It's un-American.
- 38:26Speaker 6: Huxtable, please, let me go.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Huxtable, let me go. That's pretty good when you call
- 38:32Speaker 1: a girl by her last name. She's been calling over that? Yes.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Since the beginning? Right.
- 38:37Speaker 5: Julissa, I want to move back.
- 38:40Speaker 6: Well, isn't that special?
- 38:43Speaker 1: Isn't that special? That was a commercial, right? Isn't that special? No,
- 38:47Speaker 1: that was Dana Carvey's Saturday Night Live. Yes.
- 38:52Speaker 4: Look, I didn't socialize much last year because I felt strange,
- 38:57Speaker 4: you know, out of place about being older. But I thought, hey,
- 39:01Speaker 4: it's a new year. Go live in the dorm. After all,
- 39:03Speaker 4: college is more than just books.
- 39:07Speaker 6: Yes, I thought that.
- 39:09Speaker 4: But as soon as I got here, all I heard was, Did.
- 39:12Speaker 6: You hear Jaleesa did so-and-so? Jaleesa this, Jaleesa that. Jaleesa
- 39:16Speaker 6: once punched out a teacher.
- 39:18Speaker 5: I heard it was a dean.
- 39:20Speaker 4: See, I felt like you all had your minds made
- 39:22Speaker 4: up about me, so I got my back up.
- 39:25Speaker 6: And, well, maybe I'm not the easiest person to live with.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Well. Did you really punch somebody? I was trying to
- 39:32Speaker 1: judge you so quickly. That was pretty unfriendly.
- 39:35Speaker 6: Yeah, but I have to learn to give things more time.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Yeah, see, I have an easier time watching when it's
- 39:40Speaker 1: somebody else on screen. Yeah, but, you know, Dwayne was charming. Yeah.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:49Speaker 1: And the question is, if you watch it now, how
- 39:51Speaker 1: would you go back and play it differently? No, I
- 39:54Speaker 1: wouldn't change anything. Yeah. For that time. Oh, I remember this.
- 40:00Speaker 1: This was a night that they kind of got... They
- 40:03Speaker 1: had written themselves out of ideas and was like, we're
- 40:07Speaker 1: going to end this show with the girls eating pizza
- 40:10Speaker 1: on the bed. And they didn't have any pizza boxes.
- 40:15Speaker 1: And I think that's a New York.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Pizza box. They ordered a pizza from somewhere and it
- 40:22Speaker 1: was a, yeah, yeah, and it was a New York,
- 40:24Speaker 1: it said New York pizza on it and they had
- 40:26Speaker 1: to greek out the box or something like that because
- 40:30Speaker 1: it just, you know. Rich from props. And this was,
- 40:32Speaker 1: I think we were like, um, this might have been
- 40:36Speaker 1: like one.
- 40:37Speaker 5: In the morning.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Oh, that's California Pizza Kitchen. Guaranteed that's California Pizza Kitchen. Yeah,
- 40:41Speaker 1: that logo familiar. In Virginia.
- 40:44Speaker 7: Right.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Right, that's what it was. California Pizza Kitchen in Virginia.
- 40:51Speaker 1: And this was like 1.30 in the morning. The audience
- 40:53Speaker 1: was gone. Yes. And it was just like brutal.
- 40:57Speaker 5: Good night. Rue me.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Mom and Marshall. Now let's watch. Okay, now let's watch.
- 41:08Speaker 1: There he is right there. Oh, wow. They're doing stills.
- 41:13Speaker 1: That's not how that shit ended. Oh, wow. So this
- 41:17Speaker 1: is probably the remastered version. Yeah. You'll see him, though. No,
- 41:25Speaker 1: that's my hand. That's me, my head, my leg. He
- 41:31Speaker 1: was in the first shot. You could see him in the... Wow,
- 41:35Speaker 1: they completely... They changed it up. Yeah, because you remember,
- 41:38Speaker 1: it was slow motion. It was everybody kind of Super
- 41:41Speaker 1: 8 film, slow motion. Ooh, I made it. Oh, that's
- 41:46Speaker 1: the first episode. Oh, Jesus. Yeah. That was... And interesting,
- 41:54Speaker 1: the only two male students were you and Donk.
- 41:57Speaker 3: No other male student had any dialogue at all in
- 42:01Speaker 3: the entire.
- 42:02Speaker 1: School yeah and we never hit a classroom and didn't
- 42:05Speaker 1: hit a classroom in that first.
- 42:07Speaker 8: Episode did we talk about a classroom did we talk
- 42:11Speaker 8: about class she said books yeah college is supposed to
- 42:14Speaker 8: have books and you've got so many books and so
- 42:18Speaker 8: she was serious about studying but then that was.
- 42:20Speaker 1: It yeah that episode right there that one that didn't
- 42:28Speaker 1: do or did all the things we've talked about Thursday
- 42:33Speaker 1: when it aired.
- 42:37Speaker 3: Stagehand went to the phone on the wall came back
- 42:42Speaker 3: wrote that down hung up the phone on the wall
- 42:45Speaker 3: which is the only way people could.
- 42:47Speaker 7: Reach us back yeah right they have to call the
- 42:49Speaker 7: stage put the phone down somebody would have to go
- 42:52Speaker 7: out there and get us we'd have to come back
- 42:54Speaker 7: and get the phone yeah And she put the phone
- 42:58Speaker 7: down and said, we got.
- 43:00Speaker 1: A 48 share. We're a hit.
- 43:03Speaker 3: 48% of all televisions in America.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Watch that episode that night. Number two show on all
- 43:12Speaker 1: of them. And I was in the bathroom. Most of it.
- 43:17Speaker 1: That's pretty good. Yeah. Yeah. No, I can't. I can't. Uh,
- 43:22Speaker 1: I can't walk at it. I probably wouldn't change a thing.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Cause it was supposed to be like, I really thought
- 43:27Speaker 1: I was, I really thought I was in the pocket
- 43:31Speaker 1: when we did it.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 43:33Speaker 1: And it's only when you see it and you go, wait, whoa,
- 43:37Speaker 1: who did that? Who told you to, when did that happen? And, and,
- 43:41Speaker 1: and wait, it wasn't a single frame of Marissa told
- 43:44Speaker 1: me in that episode. No. Wow.
- 43:47Speaker 9: Wow.
- 43:48Speaker 1: There's not a single friend. Oh, she's the roommate that
- 43:50Speaker 1: comes next. But she's in the... Yeah, she's in the credits.
- 43:53Speaker 6: She's in the credits.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Unlike Jasmine. And they had filmed episodes with her before that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Yet this is the first episode.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Stunning.
- 44:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Jasmine is in it, but not Marissa in the first episode.
- 44:05Speaker 1: I wonder if she was in the pilot. They moved
- 44:07Speaker 1: her to make her entrance in the second season because
- 44:11Speaker 1: they get a new roommate. So it's the three of
- 44:12Speaker 1: them now going to be in the room.
- 44:14Speaker 2: And then.
- 44:15Speaker 1: edited the stuff that we did with me and Jasmine
- 44:18Speaker 1: up into it to fill it out. Cause that was
- 44:20Speaker 1: the word that went out was that after the three
- 44:23Speaker 1: episodes they shot, they need some new characters. They're looking
- 44:26Speaker 1: for new characters.
- 44:26Speaker 3: I went because, uh, when, by the time I was
- 44:31Speaker 3: more than just a day player, the three of us
- 44:36Speaker 3: went back with, um, John, John Rosenbaum.
- 44:41Speaker 1: No, no. Uh, John Walt. No, John. Oh, my gosh. Oh, wow. John, not...
- 44:50Speaker 1: Curly hair. Yeah, John. We both see him. Oh, it's
- 44:54Speaker 1: hurting my heart to say his name.
- 44:58Speaker 3: And for some reason, I'm going to say Jonathan Lithgow. No,
- 45:01Speaker 3: not John Amos.
- 45:03Speaker 1: No, definitely not. No. John Roper. Oh, shit. That's terrible.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Yes.
- 45:12Speaker 1: That's terrible. We're going to look it up. That's old
- 45:15Speaker 1: people shit right there. Yes. But John was. Rego. John Rego.
- 45:20Speaker 1: I knew it was an R. I got it. John Rego.
- 45:23Speaker 1: That's training, folks. Thank you, John Rego. Come on. Yes.
- 45:26Speaker 3: John Rego was our director. And we went back and
- 45:29Speaker 3: shot like three episodes. with just us.
- 45:32Speaker 1: And it was one where we were taking the air
- 45:34Speaker 1: conditioner up and down the stairs.
- 45:37Speaker 3: And it's only Dwayne, Ron, and Whitley interact.
- 45:41Speaker 1: And Denise, Maggie, and Jaleesa interact. And we never cross.
- 45:47Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 45:48Speaker 1: I think so. I think you're right. We got like
- 45:49Speaker 1: three episodes like that. Where they went back to add
- 45:53Speaker 1: us in. That's pretty good. And I am today years old.
- 45:59Speaker 1: I would have lost All my money, if you said,
- 46:03Speaker 1: what was Marissa doing in the first episode? Yeah. Boom. Yeah, nothing.
- 46:10Speaker 1: And that's one of the other things. I look forward
- 46:12Speaker 1: to having Ellen Falcon.
- 46:13Speaker 3: Because I want to get Ellen's perspective on what all
- 46:16Speaker 3: this is.
- 46:17Speaker 1: God. Yeah, she could probably make me feel better. She'll
- 46:22Speaker 1: tell you why they liked you.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Because you can't figure it out. I'm still trying to
- 46:27Speaker 1: figure out, what the hell was I doing? Why was
- 46:31Speaker 1: I so nervous? That's episode one. Second episode, Different Worldview
- 46:36Speaker 1: with Darren Kadeem. Episode two, season one. That'll be up next.
- 46:41Speaker 1: So until then, see you motherfuckers soon. Oh my God.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Come on, that's good. This is how we're going to
- 46:47Speaker 1: get canceled right here. That's good. Everybody loves a good motherfucker.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Come on, man. Why does Kadeem Hardison do this on
- 46:53Speaker 1: the podcast? And there's no reason. Because he can't. This is...
- 46:58Speaker 1: I'm not trapped in here with you. You're trapped in
- 47:01Speaker 1: here with me. Now yous can't leave. Now yous can't leave.
