- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it's the 17th of
- 0:15February and good on you for inviting me in to.
- 0:20However, the beginning of your week looks lovely to have your
- 0:23company as we are continuing in this fascinating story, this
- 0:28fascinating devolution. Is that a word, devolution maybe
- 0:33of Israel and Judah? And over the next two weeks,
- 0:36particularly now that we are sure that Elisha is an absolute
- 0:41legend and that God is indeed using him as his, as his
- 0:44prophet, now we begin to see absolute proof as to why God
- 0:52needed to respond and deal with Israel in the way that He did.
- 0:57So today and for the next couple of weeks, we will be hearing
- 1:00about the failures of the kings. And as I said before, this is
- 1:03most unusual for riding out of the ancient Near East.
- 1:08Back in the day, kings would Commission scribes.
- 1:10This is a pre illiterate society.
- 1:12So they would Commission these learned people to write about
- 1:15the things that they did. And of course it would be
- 1:17biassed to the glory and and magnificence of the royalty.
- 1:22But here we have the royalty just getting absolutely bagged
- 1:25out by by the author. So this is most unusual because
- 1:30this author is writing from the perspective of God and God's
- 1:35rule of the Kingdom and just how God as the perfect king is not
- 1:41fairly or adequately represented by his earthly kings.
- 1:45So that will be made very clear as we continue with the story.
- 1:49So friends, buckle yourselves up.
- 1:50We are in for a a bumpy ride as we continue the story reading
- 1:56Second Kings Chapter 9. Meanwhile, Elisha the prophet
- 2:10had summoned a member of the group of prophets.
- 2:13Get ready to travel, he told him, and take this flask of
- 2:17olive oil with you. Go to Ramoth Gilead and find
- 2:22Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi.
- 2:26Call him into a private room away from his friends, and pour
- 2:30the oil over his head. Say to him, This is what the
- 2:33Lord says. I anoint you to be king over
- 2:37Israel. Then open the door and run for
- 2:41your life. So the young prophet did as he
- 2:44was told and went to Ramoth Gilead.
- 2:48When he arrived there, he found Jehu sitting around with the
- 2:51other army officers. I have a message for you,
- 2:54Commander, he said. Which one of us?
- 2:57Jehu asked for you, commander, he replied.
- 3:02So Jehu left the others and went into the house.
- 3:05Then the young prophet poured the oil over Jehu's head and
- 3:08said, This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says.
- 3:13I anoint you king over the Lord's people, Israel.
- 3:18You are to destroy the family of Ahab, your master.
- 3:22In this way I will avenge the murder of my prophets and all
- 3:26the Lord's servants who were killed by Jezebel.
- 3:29The entire family of Ahab must be wiped out.
- 3:33I will destroy every one of his male descendants, slave and free
- 3:36alike, anywhere in Israel. I will destroy the family of
- 3:40Ahab as I destroyed the families of Jeroboam son of Nibat and of
- 3:46Barsha son of Ahijah. Dogs will eat Ahab's wife
- 3:50Jezebel at the plot of land in Jezreel, and no one will bury
- 3:55her. Then the young prophet opened
- 3:58the door and ran. Jehu went back to his fellow
- 4:02offices and one of them asked what did that madman want?
- 4:06Is everything all right? You know how a man like that
- 4:10babbles on? Jehu replied.
- 4:13You're hiding something, they said.
- 4:15Tell us, said Jehu told them. He said to me, This is what the
- 4:20Lord says. I have anointed you to be king
- 4:24over Israel. Then they quickly spread out
- 4:28their cloaks on the bare steps and blew the ram's horn,
- 4:31shouting Jehu is king. So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, son
- 4:38of Nimshi, LED a conspiracy against King Joram.
- 4:42Now Joram had been with the army at Ramoth Gilead defending
- 4:46Israel against the forces of King Hazael of Aram.
- 4:49But King Joram was wounded in the fighting and returned to
- 4:53Jezreel to recover from his wounds.
- 4:56So Jehu told the men with him, If you want me to be king, don't
- 5:00let anyone leave town and go to Jezreel to report what we have
- 5:04done. Then Jehu got into a chariot and
- 5:08rode to Jezreel to find King Joram who was lying there
- 5:11wounded. King Aiziah of Judah was there
- 5:14too, for he had gone to visit him.
- 5:17The watchman on the tower of Jehreel saw Jehu and his company
- 5:20approaching, so he shouted to Joram, I see a company of troops
- 5:25coming, Send out a rider to ask if they are coming in peace,
- 5:31King Joram ordered. So a horseman went out to meet
- 5:34Jehu and said, The king wants to know if you are coming in peace.
- 5:40Jehu replied, What do you know about peace fallen behind me?
- 5:45The watchman called out to the king, The messenger has met
- 5:48them, but he's not returning. So the king sent out a second
- 5:52horseman. He rode up to them and said, The
- 5:55king wants to know if you come in peace again.
- 6:00Jehu answered, What do you know about peace fallen behind me?
- 6:05The watchman exclaimed. The messenger has met them, but
- 6:09he isn't returning either. It must be Jihu son of Nimshi,
- 6:13for he's driving like a madman. Quick, get my chariot ready.
- 6:19King Joram commanded. Then King Joram of Israel and
- 6:23King Aiziah of Judah rode out in their Chariots to meet Jihu.
- 6:29They met him at the plot of land that belongs to Naboth of
- 6:32Jezreel. King Joram demanded.
- 6:35Do you come in peace, Jihu? Jihu replied.
- 6:40How can there be peace as long as the idolatry and witchcraft
- 6:45of your mother Jezebel are all around us?
- 6:48Then King Joram turned the horses and fled, shouting to
- 6:53King Aiziah. Treason, Aiziah.
- 6:56But Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders.
- 7:01The arrow pierced his heart and he sank down dead in his
- 7:05chariot. Jehu said to Bidkar, his
- 7:08officer, Throw him into the plot of land that belonged to Naboth
- 7:13of Jezreel. Do you remember when you and I
- 7:16were riding along behind his father Ahab?
- 7:19The Lord pronounced this message against him.
- 7:22I solemnly swear that I will repay him here on this plot of
- 7:26land, says the Lord, for the murder of Naboth and his sons
- 7:31that I saw yesterday. So throw him out on Naboth's
- 7:34property, just as the Lord said. When King Ahaziah of Judah saw
- 7:40what was happening, he fled along the road to Beth Hagan.
- 7:44Jehu rode after him, shouting. Shoot him too.
- 7:49So they shot Ahaziah in his chariot at the ascent of GER
- 7:54near Iblim. He was able to go on as far as
- 7:58Megiddo, but he died there. His servants took him by chariot
- 8:03to Jerusalem, where they buried him with his ancestors and the
- 8:06city of David. Aiziah had become king over
- 8:10Judah in the 11th year of the reign of Joram, son of Ahab.
- 8:14When Jezebel, the Queen Mother heard that Jihu had come to
- 8:18Jezreel, she painted her eyelids and fixed her hair and sat at a
- 8:23window. When Jihu entered the gate of
- 8:25the palace, she shouted at him. Have you come in peace, you
- 8:29murderer? You're just like Zimri, who
- 8:32murdered his master. Jihu looked up and saw her at
- 8:37the window and shouted, Who was on my side?
- 8:41And two or three eunuchs looked out at him.
- 8:43Throw her down, Jihu yelled. So they threw her out of the
- 8:48window, and her blood splattered against the wall and on the
- 8:52horses, and Jihu trampled her body under his horse's hooves.
- 8:57Then Jihu went into the palace and ate and drank.
- 9:02Afterward he said someone go and bury this cursed woman, for she
- 9:07is the daughter of a king. But when they went out to bury
- 9:11her, they found only her skull, her feet, and her hands.
- 9:17When they returned and told Jehu, he stated This fulfils the
- 9:22message from the Lord which he spoke through his servant Elijah
- 9:25from Tishbay at the plot of land and Jezreel.
- 9:29Dogs will eat Jezebel's body, Her remains will be scattered
- 9:34like dung on the plot of land in Jezreel, so that no one will be
- 9:38able to recognise her Jesus.
- 9:51We see the failings of these kings, one after the other after
- 9:55the other. We see the failings of their
- 9:57families, of their wives, of their plans, and we can see only
- 10:03two, well reflections of our lives and the lives of those
- 10:07around us. Our Lord, we try and we fail to
- 10:11live lives worthy of Your name. But Jesus, in your grace and
- 10:18your mercy, you still throw open your arms and you invite us into
- 10:23your Kingdom. You forgive us when we mess up,
- 10:27and that is the most incredible thing.
- 10:30We're just so grateful for Your gracious love toward us.
- 10:35We don't understand why it is that you choose us, but here we
- 10:38are, your beloved children, and nothing this side of eternity or
- 10:43beyond will ever change that. Thank you, Jesus, for your love.
- 10:48Thank you for your forgiveness. Thank you that you draw us to
- 10:53you and into your family. Until one day, when this life is
- 10:57past, when we will enter into your eternal embrace, our Jesus.
- 11:02You are our King, and we praise you, and we pray all of this in
- 11:07your name, Amen.
