Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Strength and Courage Are Needed to Face the Difficulties of the Spiritual Path
Transcript
- 0:00When an individual withdraws from most external activities to
- 0:05focus on spiritual sadhna, people tend to interpret this as
- 0:09a sign of weakness or failure in the outer life.
- 0:13They believe the seeker could not make it in the competition
- 0:17in the external world and therefore retreated from it so
- 0:21he did not have to face it. This view, however, is
- 0:25inaccurate. While it is true that some
- 0:28individuals retreat from the difficulties they face in the
- 0:31world, they soon find that spiritual practice requires far
- 0:36more strength than they could have imagined.
- 0:40The spiritual path is not for those weak in spirit or afraid
- 0:44of tackling the powers of life. A strong, vital nature is
- 0:49essential when one enters the inner realms of consciousness.
- 0:55In his epic poem Savitri, a Legend and a Symbol, Sri
- 0:59Aurobindo expresses the inner struggle in a number of
- 1:02passages, but perhaps none so poignantly as in Book 6.
- 1:08Canto 2 Quote Exempt and unafflicted by Earth's fate.
- 1:15How shall he cure the ills he never felt?
- 1:19He covers the world's agony with his calm, but though to the
- 1:24outward eye no sign appears, and peace is given to our torn human
- 1:30hearts, the struggle is there and paid the unseen price.
- 1:36The fire, the strife, the wrestle are within.
- 1:40He carries the suffering world in his own breast.
- 1:44Its sins weigh on his thoughts. Its grief is his.
- 1:48Earth's ancient load lies heavy on his soul.
- 1:51Night and its powers beleaguer his tardy steps.
- 1:55The Titan adversary's clutch he bears.
- 1:58His March is a battle in a pilgrimage.
- 2:02Life's evil smites. He is stricken with the world's
- 2:05pain. 1,000,000 wounds gape in his secret heart.
- 2:10He journeys sleepless through an unending night.
- 2:15Antagonist forces crowd across his path.
- 2:19A siege, a combat, is his inner life.
- 2:24Even worse may be the cost direr the pain.
- 2:28His large identity and all harbouring love shall bring the
- 2:32cosmic anguish into his depths. The sorrow of all living things
- 2:37shall come and knock at his doors and live within his house.
- 2:41A dreadful cord of sympathy can tie all suffering into his
- 2:46single grief, and make all agony in all the world's his own.
- 2:54End Quote. Sri Aurobindo notes quote.
- 3:00One who has not the courage to face patiently and firmly life
- 3:04and its difficulties will never be able to go through the still
- 3:08greater inner difficulties of the sadhna.
- 3:11The very first lesson in this yoga is to face life and its
- 3:15trials with a quiet mind of firm courage and an entire reliance
- 3:22on the divine shakti. End Quote reference Srioro Bindo
