- 0:07Here they are with Lanny and Sarah. Thank you very much Milo and a very pleasant good afternoon everybody.
- 0:11The important thing now for the Bucs is they still can control their own destiny.
- 0:15With a victory this afternoon they can clinch at least a tie, which means that if it's necessary they'd have a shot at Montreal head on on Tuesday in the playoff game.
- 0:22So still a chance to control their own destiny in this Eastern Division race.
- 0:26Let's take a look now at the starting lineups. First of all for the Chicago Cubs this afternoon.
- 0:30They'll have Ivan DeJesus leading off and playing shortstop.
- 0:33Scott Thompson a product of Western Pennsylvania. Batting in the number two spot will be in center field.
- 0:39Bill Buckner will bat third and play first base.
- 0:42Dave Kingman occupies the clean up spot. He'll be in left field.
- 0:46Larry Bittner will bat number five and play right field.
- 0:50Steve Dillard will be hitting in the number six position and playing second base.
- 0:54As Steve Antivarez is out of the Chicago starting lineup he pulled a muscle yesterday.
- 0:59So Mick Callagher will play third base and bat seventh.
- 1:02Tim Blackwell will be batting from the number eight spot and doing the catching.
- 1:06And Lynn McLaughlin hitting number nine and doing the pitching.
- 1:10Once again for the Chicago Cubs it's the Haysos followed by Thompson and Buckner.
- 1:16Then Kingman, Bittner and Dillard followed by Callagher, Blackwell and McLaughlin.
- 1:21Now the starting lineup for our Pittsburgh Pirates and Omar Moreno will be leading off and playing center field.
- 1:27Jim Foley who's hit safely in all seven games of this home stand will be batting second and playing shortstop.
- 1:34Dave Parker hit safely in eighth grade game. He'll be in right field batting third.
- 1:39Dave of course has a big five-inch game yesterday.
- 1:42Willie Sargell from the clean up spot will be at first base.
- 1:46John Milner will hit number five. He'll be in left field.
- 1:49Bill Matlock will be batting sixth and playing third base.
- 1:53Ed Ott doing the catching and batting seventh.
- 1:57Bill Garner batting eighth and playing second base.
- 2:00And Bruce Keeson batting ninth and doing the pitching.
- 2:04Once again for the Pirates it's Moreno followed by Foley and Parker.
- 2:09Then Sargell Milner and Matlock followed by Ott, Garner and Keeson.
- 2:14The umpires for this afternoon's very big ball game, Bruce Freming behind the plate,
- 2:19Jerry Dale at first, Joe West at second, and Billy Williams the umpire at third.
- 2:25Pirates have taken the field, the batter at Three Rivers Stadium rise, and we are proud to present our national anthem.
- 2:33Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light
- 2:45What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
- 2:54Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
- 3:03O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
- 3:13And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air
- 3:24Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
- 3:34Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
- 3:48O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave
- 4:09Roberta Cunningham with the national anthem prior to the start of the Pirate Cubs game this afternoon.
- 4:15As Lionel mentioned, we've got a direct line hooked up with Montreal's network and CFCF radio.
- 4:21We'll be able to give you pretty much a batter by batter blow of what happens between the Expos and the Phillies this afternoon.
- 4:27Steve Rogers, 13 and 11 is going for the Expos, and Steve Carlton, 17 and 11 for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 4:35Now there are a large number of possibilities. I think the easiest way to approach it is,
- 4:40even though there's some dispute as to whether there's a magic number or not, two is a pivotal number.
- 4:45Any combination of pirate victories and expo losses the next two days, totally two, would give the Pirates the Eastern Division crown.
- 4:53Example, pirate victory this afternoon and a defeat of the Expos, say, in a game tomorrow against the Atlanta Braves, that would give it to the Bucks.
- 5:00So two is a pivotal number. Any combination would give the Pirates the Eastern Division crown.
- 5:05As I said at the top of doing the starting lineup, the big thing is with a victory this afternoon,
- 5:10the Pirates in a position to at least force a playoff, clinch at least a tie in the National League Eastern Division.
- 5:17Bruce Keeson on the mound, he's won his last four decisions. He's won six of his last seven decisions.
- 5:25And Keeson, always in his career, an outstanding September pitcher.
- 5:29This month, September of 1979, he is 3-0. He beat the Giants on the first day of September,
- 5:36beat the Chicago Cubs on the 22nd of September at Wrigley Field,
- 5:40and the other day, four days ago, he went the distance against the Montreal Expos to beat Montreal.
- 5:46So if you're going to go down to a big ball game and the final game and have everything writing,
- 5:51you'd be looking at a money pitcher like Bruce Keeson to do it for you and busters down the mound this afternoon.
- 5:56335 down the line, the Three Rivers Stadium, 375 is the power gap and 400 feet to straightaway center field.
- 6:03Field is in excellent condition, and we've gotten an ideal day to close out, I understand too,
- 6:10from eavesdropping on Montreal. It is a sunny autumn day in Montreal, Quebec, Canada,
- 6:17and they've got ideal weather as well up there for that big ball game between the Phillies and the Expos.
- 6:22There is a pirate's way to come here. All right, we're ready to go. You can just feel it.
- 6:26This place is buzzing. There's got to be a lot of nervous folks, including yours truly. Milo, let's do it.
- 6:31All right, we've come down to it on the last day. You heard Ed Ott talking about it on the pregame.
- 6:37Ott really gave us a nice interview on that show, and he put it right where it is.
- 6:42He says this is why we play all these games, and we've come right down to the last one here against the Chicago Cubs,
- 6:48a team that held a meeting before yesterday's game and said if Pittsburgh's going to win it, they're going to have to earn it.
- 6:54Then the Cubs went out and beat the Buccos yesterday, and they're out here battling today,
- 6:58and Bruce Keeson is ready to throw the first pitch of this game against the Haysuths,
- 7:02and the first pitch on the way is high inside of ball. He was squared away to punt, let it go by, and it's ball one and no strikes.
- 7:09So we're underway in the final regular season game of 79-3, Rivers.
- 7:13The Haysuths is one for nine in the series. Keeson's pitch, too close under letters, ball two.
- 7:19Thompson will be next, then Buckner. Keeson's battery made is Ed Ott, an infield of first to third,
- 7:24starch will garner Foley-Madlock. Here's the two-0 to the Haysuths.
- 7:28Bouncer down to third base side on the mound side, Keeson grabs, throws, got him.
- 7:33Good reaction off the mound by Keeson. A high shot that might have gone about 30 feet up the line and stayed in the line about six feet.
- 7:41Keeson came off the hill, made the good true throw to starchle, and it is one up and one away.
- 7:46So falling behind that first hitter, then coming right back to get him on a good play by Keeson himself,
- 7:52and that'll bring up Scott Thompson, the center fielder. Thompson in this series is 0 for 5.
- 7:57Against the league, he's hitting 2, 87. He has two homers and 29 runs batted in.
- 8:02Left hand batter, Keeson's pitch, looping liner, right field. Parker has to play it on the first bounce.
- 8:09The first hit of the game belongs to Thompson and McCuff.
- 8:12Little jug handle line drive that drops in and right field, that puts Thompson on with one away,
- 8:19and brings up Bill Buckner at three hits yesterday in their victory.
- 8:24He also made the game-saving play on running center's pitch for a pinch hit, and Buckner is 4 for 9 in this series.
- 8:33Against the league, this scrappy, intensive player is hitting 2, 83, 14 homers and 65 runs batted in.
- 8:41Injuries have taken their toll, but he still is a gutsy ball player, and he'll be playing it with everything he has here today,
- 8:49just as we hopefully look towards the Phillies to do the same thing at Montreal.
- 8:55Left hand batter waiting. Thompson with the lead is first not going anywhere.
- 8:59The pitch is a strike called on the inside corner, bell high.
- 9:05No balls and a strike. Kingman is on deck, opening inning.
- 9:10Keeson got DeJesus to bounce to him, Thompson single to right.
- 9:15Now Buckner the batter with a no ball, one strike count.
- 9:20Keeson stretches, looks over the shoulder, pitch on the way.
- 9:24Bowled way up to the left side out of play, and it's 0-2.
- 9:34If tomorrow comes about that Atlanta will be the spotlight city with Montreal playing there, it'll be a tough day for the Bucks,
- 9:42knowing they're at the mercy of what could happen down there.
- 9:48No balls, two strikes.
- 9:52And of course the Atlanta Braves playing today, don't know whether they should go home tonight or go to Atlanta and be ready to play.
- 10:00There's a ball low outside.
- 10:05The only way it can end abruptly is for the Pirates to win here and the Phillies to beat Montreal.
- 10:13One ball and two strikes. It all started back in Braden's in Florida.
- 10:21130 spring games. This is our 133rd, 63rd regular season game.
- 10:26Remember we had a bogged out game in New York against the Mets.
- 10:31So we're playing one more than those customary 162.
- 10:36Umpire wanted to look at the ball, satisfied that it's all right. Keeson going to work with the Rasenbeck.
- 10:41Got a 1-2 count on Buckner.
- 10:47Thompson takes his lead at first. Single has him there. Keeson will check him.
- 10:51Now in to Buckner. It comes outside high. Two balls and two strikes.
- 11:02Left-hand batter Buckner stepping out a moment. On the right-hander, Keeson.
- 11:08Stargell holding against the runner at first.
- 11:12A little bigger lead this time. Pitch on the way. Swing and a high foul out of play over to the left side.
- 11:28Keeson having one three in a row and five of his last six.
- 11:41Is there anything on this that I can read? I don't know. Four in a row and six of his last seven, Lytle.
- 11:47Throw to first, not close.
- 11:53Two balls and two strikes. Thompson with about a half-step bigger lead. He's out on that carpet. Here's the pitch.
- 12:00Outside, three and two.
- 12:10Buckner knocks some dirt out of his flanks before he steps back up in there.
- 12:14Joe-Joy Amalfitano handles it with Buckner batting on a full count at Thompson at first base.
- 12:20He's gone back to that big lead again and he's really digging that trench with that back foot.
- 12:25That's all he wants to go. He's going. There's a shot up Keeson's ankle and it rolls into left field.
- 12:31Thompson who is running is going to come to third. They've got runners on the corners with one away.
- 12:38A base hit. Keeson appears to be all right.
- 12:43It's all hit him, ricocheted into left field. So two straight hits. Thompson third, Buckner first.
- 12:49One out and brings up the left fielder, Dave Kingman.
- 12:58Kingman two for ten in a series with an RBI. Against the league, he's hitting 284-47 homers and 114 runs batted in.
- 13:14So Keeson in a first inning trouble spot. Like to use that wicked low slider or a sinker and get this big guy to hit into a double play.
- 13:23And here's the pitch to Kingman. Swing and a miss and that was the ten of a pitch I was just talking about and he went after it and came up empty.
- 13:31Dave Kingman has three of his 47 homers against us and seven of his 114 RBI.
- 13:45Thompson at third. Buckner at first. One away. Keeson checks. Here's the pitch to Kingman.
- 13:50Bites to third. There's a double play ball. Second one. First base. Bad throw.
- 13:55But Schargel came back, got the bag and it's a double play.
- 14:01Buckner went in hard on Garner, turned him upside down and Garner's throw then sailed high toward the right field side.
- 14:09But Schargel went up and got it, came back to the bag and the double play ball was there.
- 14:15It wasn't easy. It wasn't a double play ball from the start. But the Bucks do it with great work in the middle by Garner and really fabulous work by Schargel at first base to end it.
- 14:28And I think Buckner may have been cut on the hand or injured on the hand. The trainers ought to take a look at him.
- 14:34So we have play to happen in the cup. They're scoreless with two hits and the first place pirates are just now coming into bat.
- 14:42Glenn McLaughlin, 13 and 13, out of the mound getting in the warmup tosses. His catcher today will be Tim Blackwell.
- 14:49Buckner is still looking at that hand as he takes some warmup tosses at first base. Dillard at second. DeJesus at short.
- 14:56Kelliher at third. Their outfield left to right is Kingman Thompson and Bitzner.
- 15:00And we'll have Moreno, Foley and Parker ready to go against McLaughlin and we may have something for Montreal.
- 15:06Well we do have the first inning in. Rose lined to Paris. Larry Bowe applied to Ballentine and Baker's Bride bowled to catcher John Samargo.
- 15:13So the Phillies went down one, two, three against Steve Rogers at the top of the first.
- 15:17And a note by the way on that Buckner play. It looked like the throw from Garner on the pivot came off Buckner's body.
- 15:24It looked like he deflected the ball and it might be the reason. It appeared to be they were looking at his wrist or his hand and he might have caught Garner's throw.
- 15:31All right. Omar Moreno with a 284 batting average. Eight homers and 69 runs batted in will lead it off. He's three for ten in the series.
- 15:38With a big day here today he can realize the dream of every hitter. 200 hits in a season. He's sitting on 196.
- 15:45Here's McLaughlin's first pitch. Breaking ball outside. One and all. McLaughlin has been pitching very well the last month.
- 15:52He's in a contract bid with the Cubs and he's trying to show them that he means business.
- 15:58And there is a ball high inside two and oh. Talk about a young man finding himself in a spot at Montreal.
- 16:04What about John Tamargo? All of a sudden he's become their catcher. There is a ball low inside.
- 16:12I was surprised today with Carlson going for the Phillies that they would not go with the right hand batter Duffy Dyer.
- 16:17Of course Tamargo's a switch hitter so they still get the advantage there.
- 16:20All right a 3-0 on the way to the Antelope. And it's a strike down the middle and it's three and one.
- 16:27Almanchuk coaching at first. Jolionetta third. We'd like to get them some business in a hurry.
- 16:32And here's the 3-1 to Moreno. Foul down here to the left. And it's up to three and two.
- 16:43Foley is on deck. Then it'll be Parker. But Parker has really got a red hot bat going.
- 16:56And he's out alive here already. There are some seats in the upper deck out above the center field scoreboard.
- 17:01But everything else is full. Here's the 3-2. Swinging another foul up to the left side.
- 17:09So if you're in the neighborhood come on over and see the battle of the Bucks fight for an Eastern Division flag.
- 17:15And we've got him in person.
- 17:32Swings and he misses it a pitch away. And Omar Moreno strikes out.
- 17:38Joe safety of the pirate front office over with a note.
- 17:42I just wanted to point out to the listening audience that we do still have some reserves for the league championship series.
- 17:49Should it be played in Pittsburgh? We have plenty of general admissions tickets.
- 17:53They should know and be aware that we have some reserves left for the three days in Pittsburgh and plenty of GAs for those things.
- 18:01All right Joe. Thank you for that note and to the fans and bringing them up today.
- 18:05Tim Foley with a one ball no strike county. Four for seven in the series with a run batted in.
- 18:11The league hitting 287. Crowds him on the letters. Two balls and no strikes.
- 18:16Tim has one homer. He's driven in 65 runs.
- 18:21Here's the 2-0. Look out on the shoulder ball. Three.
- 18:27Fell behind Moreno 3-0 but ended up getting him on a strikeout. Now he's 3-0 on Foley.
- 18:32Dave Parker due up next. Then Starshell.
- 18:36Dave McGlosson. Right hander to the motion and the 3-0 on the way. Inside watching.
- 18:47Foley becomes the first pirate base runner.
- 18:51And Dave Parker with an eight game hitting streak and up to 3-0-7 is going to step in right here.
- 18:56Watch for Alex Fuzzer batting in the bottom of the first. After one out, Rodney Scott reached on an infield hit.
- 19:01And Moa made only a six there of the season allowing Scott to reach second. Then after Dawson struck out, Scott stole third.
- 19:08So he's a third base with two outs in the bottom of the first. And Tony Frest batting in the score of the ball game.
- 19:12And here are three rivers. Foley's on it first with a walk. He's went away. And Parker the batter hitting 3-0-7.
- 19:18That's the highest he's been in a long time. 25 homers. Leaps the club at RBI's also with 94.
- 19:26He's got 29 hits against the Cubs this year. That's more than anybody on our club against any other team and vice versa.
- 19:32Line drive left field, base hit. Kingman knocks it down but Foley joins Roppet momentarily and is going to come on to third.
- 19:40Nine game hitting streak for the Cobra.
- 19:47Good job of base running by Foley with that play right in front of him. And Kingman, that ball may have come up on him and he may be injured out in the left center.
- 19:59Foley saw that the ball had handcuffed Kingman and he was able as he was coming into second base after making the stutter step, make the turn at second.
- 20:08But it did jump up an unusual bat for Kingman and it handcuffed him and Foley took advantage of that.
- 20:14Alright, Dargel who's ready to step in and a beautiful new banner out of that left center field pavilion.
- 20:20Captain Will and Scrap Iron Phil with some beautiful artistry on it. Congratulations to the folks who brought that banner. That is a dandy.
- 20:28Dargel will step in hitting 280. Leads the club and homers with 31 and has 80 runs batted in.
- 20:47In this series he's one for ten with two RBIs. Got two runs home yesterday in the opening inning.
- 20:53Runners on the corners from McLaughlin to pitch to Dargel. Swing and a miss and it's strike one. What a rift he has.
- 21:03No balls and one strike. It's prize day in Pittsburgh for the fans and for the pirate players.
- 21:15No balls, one strike. Pitch on the way. Swinging high fly ball. Shallow left center. Thompson will make the play.
- 21:26Foley will tag and head for home. The throw to the plate is going to be late and Foley scores his one to nothing pirate.
- 21:34Dargel gets a run home with a fly ball that really wasn't that deep. But the challenge Thompson's arm.
- 21:51Foley slid in safely. It's one to nothing bucks. And Dargel gets his 81st runs batted in of the year.
- 21:58So the pirates crash first and here's Milner. Value of a good scouting report right there. No doubt about that.
- 22:05And boy are guys scouting as good as anybody and they're on top of it every inning. Runner going. Milner fouls one out of play over to the left side.
- 22:13Milo, listen to this. We mentioned that Scott was the third of that Montreal game. Perez walked and then Perez stole second base.
- 22:19So the Expos had runners at second and third and then Carlton struck out to Margot. So the Expos did not score in the bottom of the first.
- 22:26No score. Phillies and Expos going to the second. All right. Right up to date we go with the team that's right behind us.
- 22:32The Montreal Expos as the Bucks go on top here against Chicago in the opening innings. Milner batting 276. 16 homers and 60 RBI.
- 22:43Parker at first. Buckner holding against him. McLaughlin stretches and delivers inside with a slider and it's one and one.
- 22:49The on-duck hitter is Bill Matlock. Chuck Tanner pacing up and down over on the far edge of the dugout.
- 22:57This is his third gear here and I've never seen him stay quiet for over 10 seconds. He's moving somewhere all the time.
- 23:04The pitch is an off-speed breaking ball and stays high. Two and one.
- 23:12Milner batting. A run is in. Foley walks. He scores. Parker is singled. He's at first. Stargell sacrificed fly. Got Foley home.
- 23:22Two away now as the right-hander for the Cubs, McLaughlin, touches the belt. Parker running. There's a high pop foul back here to the left.
- 23:28It'll be out of play. About eight rows up behind the third base dugout and it's two balls and two strikes on the hammer.
- 23:41I think all the folks who brought banners this year brought them for closing day. It sure looks like it.
- 23:49They have been a big part of our home games this year. They've been loyal. They've bringing them and they've brought out some great ones and we appreciate it.
- 23:59Two balls, two strikes.
- 24:04Strike three call. Took something off of a breaking ball. Side retires.
- 24:09Second strikeout for the come right-hander in the opening inning. Milner didn't like the call at all.
- 24:15He simply laid his batman's helmet down in the batter's box to kind of show his chagrin for the played-up player's decision.
- 24:22One run, one hit, no errors to walk. Sacrifice fly, one left. We've played an inning in Pittsburgh.
- 24:30Wish you were all here. What a day it is. It's the Pirates one and the Cubs nothing.
- 24:39Ruth Kesey's got another warm-up shot to two coming as we go to the second. Looking at Bittner, Dillard and Kelleher.
- 24:45We've got a moment here at the top of the hour to tell you who we are and where we're coming from all around the five states with a battle in bucks right here on the Pirate Baseball Network.
- 24:54For all your travel arrangements by air or car, stop in the Mid-State 3A Auto Club Vine Street downtown Johnstown.
- 25:01This is WJNLFM Johnstown.
- 25:05Kesey is ready and Bittner, the right fielder, one for eight in the series, will step in.
- 25:11Bittner against the league is hitting 283. Three homers, one against us and 49 runs batted in.
- 25:20Kesey's first pitch to him in the second. Swing and a miss. Foul-tips as the play-down player and it's strike one.
- 25:30Dillard playing second for them today is on deck. Kelleher, the third baseman, is down and a hole. Kesey kicks and he brings it.
- 25:37High fly ball down the left side. Should hang up long enough for Milner to come over near the line and get it.
- 25:44Just inside the line as he cops the ball and it's one away.
- 25:54That'll bring up Dillard. He's 0 for 4 in this series.
- 26:01Dillard batting 285. Homers 24 runs batted in and two of the homers are against us. Got them in one series.
- 26:08The middle series in Chicago, everything he did turned to gold. And here's the pitch to him. Swing and a miss.
- 26:17There's that nasty slider and it's no balls and one strike.
- 26:23The slider, a lot of the veteran hitters will tell you, especially the ones who came out of the 40s and 50s and played some in the 60s,
- 26:31there's a bouncer short, ball into his left, fires the start, you'll got him, do that.
- 26:41Those hitters that reached those two errors will tell you that that's one of the reasons there are fewer 300 hitters
- 26:48in the overall picture of baseball than there were in the teens, 20s, 30s, and in the 40s.
- 26:55Because almost everybody throws it. It's hard to pick up the rotation, breaks so fast, and a pitcher who has good control of it
- 27:02and can work the corners with it, it's a very tough pitch.
- 27:06And right now, Keaton has a good one. Here's the pitch to Kelleher and it's high on the shoulder, ball one.
- 27:12Kelleher in this series, 4 for 9 with an RBI. He's batting 257 for the year, no homers and 10 rebbies.
- 27:19Right-hand batter stands up in front of the batter's box, too close on the knees, ball two. Keaton wanted that pitch.
- 27:28Well, on a day like today, they're going to want every bit of that corner they can get.
- 27:34High inside, ball three. Blackwell, the catcher, due up next. Nobody on, two away. Cubs are batting against Keaton.
- 27:42Keaton and the Pirates at the moment have a one-to-nothing lead. Here's the 3-0 to Kelleher.
- 27:47Strike on the letters, three and one.
- 27:54Now, Keaton, who was ready, was going to have to wait a minute. Kelleher steps out on him.
- 28:00Now they're both ready, and a 3-1 pitch on the way from Buster.
- 28:04And it's up high. He walks him. That is the first pass issued by Keaton today.
- 28:09And it puts a runner on with two down and brings up Blackwell, the catcher.
- 28:14Final in the top of the second. The Phillies, Mike Schmidt, bats out to Chris Speyer of the Expos.
- 28:19Then Greg Luzinski, single to right, and Greg Gross, single to left.
- 28:22So the Phillies have runners in first and second, one away top of the second, no score in Montreal.
- 28:27All right. Let's see if the Phillies can dent the scoreboard at the big O.
- 28:31Blackwell, who is 0-4 in this series and batting 1-57 against the league. No homers in 10 RBIs.
- 28:39The catch hitter batting left-handed against Keaton with Kelleher at first. There's a liner foul down the left side.
- 28:46Skips down into the bullpen fence on Ota Milner, and the lovely pirate goes out to retrieve it.
- 28:52Somebody over her way will end up with a souvenir. Look at the kids hanging over the edge saying, let it be me.
- 29:02No balls in one strike.
- 29:08Keaton with a first, not close.
- 29:14Keaton looks in to read the sign from Ed Ott. Left-hand batter waiting.
- 29:18Keaton fits to Blackwell. Up high, one ball, one strike.
- 29:27So being competitive and staying in it is what it's all about.
- 29:31And the fans who like that effort have to be happy with what the pirates have done coming down to the final day.
- 29:36There is a ball, and it's 2-1.
- 29:40So on the 7-hitter Kelleher, he ended up walking him. He falls behind the 8-hitter Blackwell.
- 29:47Keaton steps away a moment trying to regroup. He'd like to get this fella so he'll have the pitcher to lead off with in the next inning.
- 29:53Throw to first, not close on Kelleher.
- 29:59Two balls and one strike.
- 30:03Keaton at the belt, 2-1 on the way.
- 30:06Bouncer, Garner, he has it. Throws, Starjil on the other end, side retires.
- 30:16Second to first takes care of Blackwell and the Cubs. No runs and no hits. No errors or walks. Kelleher left.
- 30:23We played an inning and a half. It's the Pirates' one and Chicago nothing.
- 30:28As the Bible and Bucks do their thing at Three Rivers, the Steelers are on the road and are in front of the Eagles, 7-0 in the second quarter.
- 30:40Thornton just scored on an 8-yard run.
- 30:43Steelers, 7, Eagles, nothing, second quarter in Philadelphia.
- 30:50Here is Bill Madlock with a nine-game hitting streak, three break in the third with two RBI.
- 30:55He's batting 297 with a big day like Parker had yesterday. He could get to 300.
- 31:01There's a strike call to Bumpenese on the inside corner.
- 31:04Madd-Dogg has 14 homers and 85 runs batted in.
- 31:09Boy, when you consider what the left side of our infield via the trade market has produced, they spin through the hole left side.
- 31:19Ten-game hitting streak for the Dogg.
- 31:26That levels the hit column at two and will bring up the catcher at odd. He has a six-game hitting streak.
- 31:35By the way, there was a question earlier today in our clubhouse about whether the Braves might save Phil Neekrow to pitch against Montreal.
- 31:41Apparently not going to happen. Phil Neekrow pitching this afternoon against Bill Bonham in the Cincinnati Reds.
- 31:46Well, he's got a chance to win 21 games.
- 31:52And in case there wouldn't be a date tomorrow with Montreal, he would be deprived of that.
- 32:01Runner going. The throw down will be out.
- 32:07But stealing to six.
- 32:13Blackwell got rid of that ball in pretty good shape.
- 32:16It appeared as though maybe DeJesus had tagged him up on the shoulder, but the second base umpire called him out and it's won away.
- 32:24And it's a strike one count, and Madlock, in his disdain for the call, just flipped his batting helmet back about 30 feet.
- 32:33And I think that the arp bench is really on the second base umpire. I think Madlock thought he was in there and was tagged late.
- 32:49No balls and one strike on odd. He's three for eight in the series, batting 273 against the league. The odd are with seven homers and 51 RBI.
- 32:59McLaughlin delivers. Up high a ball and it's one and one.
- 33:10The wind and the pitch fouled off down into the lower boxes.
- 33:15One ball, two strikes to add on. Bill Garner due up next.
- 33:26McLaughlin looking in to get the sign. Right hand pitcher, left hand batter.
- 33:33Looks at a strike, a slider on the inside corner of the hand. Odd draws an imaginary line in the dirt, showing that the pitch was a foot inside.
- 33:42He gave the plate umpire a shot.
- 33:46Now we've had two brief encounters with the umpires here today.
- 33:52Joe West had to bark back at McLaughlin. He couldn't let well enough alone. Bruce Fromming behind the plate just barked back at odd.
- 33:59He couldn't let well enough alone. They've got to let their fuses be longer today than ordinarily. This is a pressure packed ball game.
- 34:11Here's Garner squaring away to bunt, takes it up high and it's one ball and no strikes.
- 34:19Garner with a 13 game hitting streak, two for eight in the series with a run batted in.
- 34:26McLaughlin winding, here's the pitch. There's a high foul, bending out a play down the right side.
- 34:31Buckner and Dillard over to take a look, but it's up about eight or ten rows.
- 34:35By the way, that Philadelphia second we mentioned that the Phillies had two on with one out. They did not score.
- 34:40As McCarver grinded to Scott and then Vukovic, John Vukovic was called out on strike.
- 34:44So they're going to the bottom of the second. Phillies and Expos still scoreless.
- 34:49Where have they got Vukovic playing?
- 34:53Rows at short, spin at third, so Vukovic went to play second base.
- 34:59The ball and the strike, here's the pitch to Scraps, fouls it off. He's fought off a good pitch in on his hands and it's one and two.
- 35:17Garner back up in there, Lynn McLaughlin taking the sign from Blackwell.
- 35:23Now he's ready, the pitch on the way. High bouncer short, great big hop to Haysuth. On to Buckner, Scraps is out and the tide has been retired.
- 35:31No runs and a hit, a conch stealing, no errors and nobody left. We played two innings and it remains.
- 35:37Hyres won, Chicago nothing.
- 35:43Keeson still with the one to nothing lead, prepares for the third and the pitcher, Lynn McLaughlin, not a bad hitting pitcher, will be leaving it up.
- 35:50Back the last time we saw him, he got a couple of hits.
- 35:57He's had 14 hits this year, two doubles and a triple.
- 36:03So McLaughlin, hitting 214, he can't nonchalant him up there and I know Foster would like to get him and start off the third with an out.
- 36:20The Art McKennon voice in the background, the veteran PA announcer here for many, many years, passing out a lot of the prizes.
- 36:28There are 1,000 prizes here today for the fans and the big ones of course will be drawn down on the field right after the game.
- 36:40Following that Montreal ball game in the bottom of the second, Carlton just struck out Valentine and struck out Parris.
- 36:47So Steve Carlton's got four strikeouts in the first inning and two thirds against the Expos.
- 36:51What's he going in today, record wise?
- 36:5417 and 11.
- 36:56Well, he's battling too, that 18, that's an impressive mark, that's a good pitching season.
- 37:03Those people moving are not moving because of any dew drops are they?
- 37:07There's a swing and a miss, foul by McLaughlin really, rolls back behind Ott.
- 37:14There's too many of them moving for it to just be a refreshment call.
- 37:21Or any other call.
- 37:22Rest up on the turnpike of life.
- 37:25Balls and a strike, McLaughlin batting left handed, here's the pitch from Keeson.
- 37:28A tapper up the third base side, Doggie's got to hurry.
- 37:31Fire and got him.
- 37:33And it's two away.
- 37:35A high chop.
- 37:37It just wasn't going to carry.
- 37:39Madlok had to run on, grab, fire almost in the same motion, getting McLaughlin and it's one up and one away in the cup third.
- 37:48By the way, that Montreal Seconds fire just popped up so the Expos went down one, two, three, scoreless going to the third at Olympic Stadium.
- 37:55So they're right with it.
- 37:57They're just a hitter or two behind us and now DeJesus, who was thrown out by Keeson in the opening ending to start the game, stepping in with nobody on in front of him and one away.
- 38:08Keeson trying to protect a one to nothing lead as he pitches in the third, delivering to DeJesus, high and tight a ball and it's one and oh.
- 38:22Keeson brings it.
- 38:24Strike is in there, one and one.
- 38:34The wind in the pitch, high inside, two balls and a strike.
- 38:43So Asus the batter, Thompson do up next.
- 38:48Keeson bringing it to him and it is close on the shoulder.
- 38:51That'll make it three and one.
- 38:53Doesn't want to lose a fellow like this because he's a base ceiling threat.
- 39:01He leads them with 29.
- 39:03There's a strike called on the inside corner between the knees and the belt and that'll fill it.
- 39:07Now Buster's got a chance to go get him with a payoff.
- 39:12Hope the folks in the stands with the radios who are following us along with the Montreal game will give you the Cedar scores as well.
- 39:18There's a shot knocked down by Foley up and throwing and not able to get him.
- 39:23The Asus runs very, very well.
- 39:26Even with all that, it was a photo finish and it will go as a base hit.
- 39:31Foley made a fabulous play diving and then getting up and almost got him into Asus, one of the better runners.
- 39:39And Foley gets a hand for his effort.
- 39:49Scott Thompson had a base hit in the first inning and he's stepping in here now with a runner at first to Asus and one away.
- 39:57Keatson's got to be alert here with the Asus as a base runner.
- 40:01Goes out with that front foot on the carpet, pitch on the way, goes outside to Thompson and it's one ball and no strikes.
- 40:13Thompson stepping back a moment looking at his third base coach Kuki Rohan.
- 40:17A good steady second baseman for a number of years in the American and National League.
- 40:22The Asus bluffs a start, then when the ball is bounced behind him, he takes a look back, realizes he's going to have to retrace his steps.
- 40:31So it's one ball and one strike.
- 40:44All right, the Asus takes his lead again.
- 40:46Captain Willie trying to hold him close. Up to Keatson to do it on the other end and he fires over but it's not close.
- 40:54Still one and one to Thompson. Buckner do up next.
- 40:57They have three hits. Thompson and Buckner back to back in the first. The Asus in this inning.
- 41:02The Pirates have a couple of hits. Parker in the first.
- 41:05After a Foley walk, setting up start, he'll sacrifice fly, getting the only run home to this moment.
- 41:11And then Matlock had a single in the second inning.
- 41:13Now for the third, Billy Steve Carlson single to center field. So he's on.
- 41:18Leadoff situation there with Pete Rhodes the batter.
- 41:21Well, that's another indication and Ed Ott and I talked about it at length on the pregame today, about this game and its integrity.
- 41:29Runner going, swinging a shot up the middle of base hit.
- 41:33Moreno playing it on the roll. They've got the Asus at third.
- 41:37Now throw over to third from Foley as they should have taken a big turn but Matlock couldn't get back to him.
- 41:45Thompson gets his second straight hit. Puts Cubs on the corners with one away.
- 41:51But to complete that thought, back to the Phillies who had to be disappointed.
- 41:58Especially after having won three divisions in a row, going out and getting Pete Rhodes.
- 42:03They wanted a World Series. Their owner, Rooley Carpenter, wanted it in the worst way.
- 42:07They've been out of it really for five or six weeks.
- 42:10They're playing Monterey all tough.
- 42:12The Braves who have been out of it since Memorial Day played Houston tough in the other division.
- 42:17The Cubs here have been out of it for a month and they're playing us in this series like their lives depended upon it.
- 42:23It's just a great testimonial to the type of players we have in this great game.
- 42:27There's a shot to second, could be two.
- 42:30Giner Foley starts the double play.
- 42:364-6-3, a sharply hit ball to Giner's left.
- 42:40Then when he got it, it was just a matter of turning it.
- 42:43It's two double plays and three innings for the Bucs.
- 42:46The Cubs go down with no runs, two hits, no errors and a man left.
- 42:51We've played into the middle of the third with some sparkling defense for the Bucs.
- 42:56And it's the Pirates one and the Cubs nothing.
- 43:02All right, we're getting ready to go to the bottom of the third.
- 43:05Bruce Keeson will be leading it off and you go to the top with Moreno and Foley.
- 43:13Keeson this year has had eight hits, two doubles, one homer.
- 43:29It was a grand slam.
- 43:30He has six RBIs.
- 43:32Against the Cubs he's 0-4 with his bat in 79 and he's leading it off against McLaughlin.
- 43:37Takes a big breaking ball outside, 1-0.
- 43:42I hesitate to give that eagle stealer score.
- 43:49Here's the 1-0.
- 43:51There's a looping liner foul down the right side.
- 43:55Because they had the Steelers in front seven to nothing and they show Harris with a touchdown.
- 43:59That would make it 14 to nothing, but they show the score seven to seven.
- 44:02So I'm going to wait for a clarification on that.
- 44:14Here's the 1-1 to Buster, ball low outside.
- 44:38The ball to Keeson, 2-1.
- 44:50Blackwell on out and had a little talk with McLaughlin.
- 44:53Now Blackwell back, jawing a little bit with the point on fire.
- 44:56Alright, 2-1 to count.
- 44:59Pitch on the way.
- 45:01There's a high fly ball left field.
- 45:03Dingman back.
- 45:04He's going to have it about 12 feet short of the track and it's won away.
- 45:08Dingman had to go back because he was playing up on Keeson.
- 45:12Top of the third in Montreal.
- 45:14Vic McBride has just had a sacrifice fly that scored Carlton from third.
- 45:18So the Phillies have a 1-0 lead over the Expos and the top of the third at Olympic Stadium.
- 45:23Alright, 1-0.
- 45:26Phillies and the 7-7 stealer eagle score is correct.
- 45:32Half time, stealer 7, eagle 7.
- 45:35At Montreal, the Phillies lead 1-0.
- 45:40And of course right here it's 1-0 Pirates.
- 45:43Here's Omar Moreno, struck out swinging in the opening inning.
- 45:49Foley will be next.
- 45:52The Steelers expected a rough tough game at Philly and they're getting it.
- 45:567-7 at intermission.
- 45:57Here's the pitch.
- 45:59There's a strike call.
- 46:02Jackie Sherrill's Fifth Panthers escaped by the skin of their teeth in that same arena last night over a good temple team.
- 46:08Here's the pitch.
- 46:09A bouncer third.
- 46:11Keller has it.
- 46:12Long throw and he got him.
- 46:14Boy, Keller showed us a good arm right there because his momentum of taking him across the line,
- 46:20he was almost halfway to the coaches' box.
- 46:23Good throw by Keller.
- 46:25The crowd reacting now to the Phillies 1-0 lead at Montreal.
- 46:32And that's after two and a half.
- 46:34The final out of that third inning was recorded.
- 46:38Here's Foley, walked in the first inning, scored one to this moment, is the only run here.
- 46:43And the pitch to Foley, well inside of all.
- 46:46Parker due up next.
- 46:52Here's the pitch.
- 46:53Fowled into the backstop one and one.
- 46:57You know, just about all of North and Central America tuned in.
- 47:01Of course, up in Montreal, all across the Canadian countries there, they've got to be tuned in to what's happening.
- 47:07And there is a broadcaster from Latin America here as well covering this game.
- 47:12That's a 1-1 to Foley.
- 47:13Line drive, right center base fifth.
- 47:15Bittner over to get it.
- 47:17Wurlton throws it back in.
- 47:19A good play by Bittner to keep that ball from going through.
- 47:23The throw into the infield rolled by second, but Keller was there to back up.
- 47:27Foley gets his first hit of the game.
- 47:30The third hit for the Pirates.
- 47:36And it'll bring up Dave Parker with a base hit in the first inning.
- 47:41Now is it safely in 17 of his last 21 games and has a nine-game hitting streak.
- 47:48Parker hitting 309.
- 47:59Parker batting with Foley at first and two away, third inning.
- 48:02Bucks trying to add to a one-to-nothing lead.
- 48:04Pitch to Parker.
- 48:06Down low of all.
- 48:08Stretches looks back.
- 48:23Here's the fifth.
- 48:24Swing and a miss.
- 48:28Parker at the moment has 192 hits.
- 48:31Last year when he won a batting title he had 194.
- 48:42One ball, one strike, two away.
- 48:45Foley getting the two out.
- 48:47Looping liner single into right center.
- 48:49Buckner holding against Foley.
- 48:51And you got a 1-1 count on Parker with Starjowl on deck.
- 48:56Go to first.
- 48:57Now, oh, I don't think Buckner knew that throw was coming.
- 49:01He had to leap over the back of Foley to get the throw.
- 49:04Now the Glossman looking in to Blackwell.
- 49:06I don't think everybody knew that play was on.
- 49:10One ball, one strike.
- 49:13Now Buckner's holding against Foley.
- 49:15Here's the 1-1 to Parker.
- 49:17Liner, left field, base hit.
- 49:20Foley will turn in second and hold on there.
- 49:23It's another hit for Parker.
- 49:25Two today and nine in this series.
- 49:30What a pair Parker is on.
- 49:35I think that situation is an example of what Dave is doing lately.
- 49:38Going more with the pitches.
- 49:39That ball was a fastball away and he just took it and dripped it into left field.
- 49:44All right, here's Captain Willie.
- 49:46Got the only run of the game home in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to Scabalough left center.
- 49:50But Jolynette elected to send Foley and Foley scored.
- 49:55It's 1-0 and Starjil trying to add to it here.
- 49:57Foley second, Parker first, two down, third inning.
- 50:00The pitch to Starjil.
- 50:02There's a fly ball down the left side toward the corner.
- 50:05Kingman over and Kingman is there on the run.
- 50:08Oh, he went a long way to get that ball as it was slicing down toward that corner.
- 50:13Looked like it had a chance to drop, but Kingman stayed with it,
- 50:16pulled it out of the air and the side has been retired.
- 50:20No runs, two hits, no errors and two pirates left.
- 50:24Starjil was flirting with extra bases and trying to get Foley and Parker home,
- 50:29but Kingman with a good long running catch.
- 50:31We played three innings.
- 50:33It's the Pittsburgh Pirates 1, the Chicago Cubs nothing.
- 50:39Bruce Keeson who has been tough with the help of two double plays over the first three,
- 50:44leading 1-0 with this total board.
- 50:46Pirates 1, 4-0 with Keeson, Harvey I. Starjil, Foley scored it.
- 50:50Couseroll 4-0 with McLaughlin.
- 50:52Keeson has been stingy with his pitches using only 37 through the first three innings.
- 50:57He's got Kingman, Bittner and Dillard, the 4-5, 6-hitters do in the fourth.
- 51:03And Kingman is heading toward the plate and it so often happens, Lanny,
- 51:09but if fellow makes a great play to end the previous half inning,
- 51:13they come to bat to lead it off and that's the story with Kingman.
- 51:16Yes, indeed.
- 51:17So many times you get the spotlight of the field and the sun shines down
- 51:20as you come to bat to lead off the next.
- 51:22And so Kingman will do so here in the fourth inning.
- 51:25Kingman bats into a double play.
- 51:27Bucks have turned two double plays in the first three innings.
- 51:29They've been big ones too as the Cubs had threats going in the first and third innings.
- 51:341-0 Pirates lead, Chicago batting in the top of the fourth.
- 51:38Here's the fifth swing and a missed strike one.
- 51:41In the Expo third, Steve Rogers singled to right.
- 51:44Then Steve Carlton blocked him to second.
- 51:47Kromardi bats to Vukovich.
- 51:49Rogers held at second.
- 51:50Then Rodney Scott tried to bun his way on
- 51:52and Smith made an outstanding play to throw him out.
- 51:54And Dawson lied to growth.
- 51:56So the Expos did not score in the bottom of the third.
- 51:59Philadelphia leading 1-0 going to the fourth.
- 52:02Fitch to Kingman is up high and inside, ball one.
- 52:04Mo Eckhaus is keeping an eye right up to date
- 52:09with what's happening with the Expos and Phillies.
- 52:11We can bring you a better by better description of what's going on at Olympic Stadium.
- 52:16And the Expos doing likewise of our broadcasters.
- 52:19The 1-1 Fitch and it's inside two and one.
- 52:22Kingman 47 home runs, tops in the National League.
- 52:27On this final day of the regular season,
- 52:30Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies has 45 home runs so he's two back.
- 52:37Kingman leading off the top of the fourth inning.
- 52:39Here's the 2-1 Fitch, swing and a miss.
- 52:54Bruce Keeson 22-6 in his career in September.
- 53:00Here's the 2-2 Fitch to Kingman.
- 53:02He's swinging a foul ball back to the screen.
- 53:10Top of the fourth inning.
- 53:13By the way, the Philadelphia run scored when it came in the top of the third.
- 53:21Scored when Beck McBride sacrificed fly, got Steve Carlson home from third.
- 53:28Keeson gets the sign.
- 53:3022-5 to Kingman, swung on, lined to left, they said.
- 53:34Bielner will play the ball on one hop and flip it back in.
- 53:36That is hit number five for the Chicago Cubs.
- 53:43One-nothing Pirates lead.
- 53:45Brings up right fielder Larry Bitzner.
- 53:47He is 0-1.
- 53:49Pirates can clinch at least a tie for the Eastern Division crown with a win this afternoon.
- 53:55Again, I think it's important to point out that two is a big number.
- 53:59It's a combination of pirate wins and expo losses totaling two today
- 54:03and the possibility of a doubleheader tomorrow.
- 54:08Kingman has asked for time, and he's going to come back into the Chicago dugout.
- 54:14Gives us a chance to take a look at some of the other games.
- 54:17That's leading the Cardinals 1-0 in the first inning.
- 54:20Atlanta and Cincinnati scoreless in the opening inning.
- 54:22Phil Negros against Bill Bonham.
- 54:24Houston at Los Angeles, San Diego at San Francisco.
- 54:28Milo?
- 54:29In the throes of the pennant fight here, an interesting note, Lanny,
- 54:33on Ron Gidry pitching for the Yankees at Toronto.
- 54:37He just got his 200 strikeouts,
- 54:40and when you think back over the illustrious Yankee history of all the great pitchers
- 54:44back in the 20s and the 30s and Whitey Ford and some of those great pitchers,
- 54:49it's the first time a Yankee pitcher has ever had back-to-back 200 strikeout years.
- 54:55If somebody asked you that off the top of your head, you'd have to say somebody did.
- 54:58Yeah, you're right about that.
- 55:00I saw a note yesterday that Gidry played the outfield for the Yankees yesterday.
- 55:05Billy Martin's been watching Chuck Tanner's playbook.
- 55:08The campaign that Kentsa Colby is there, and that is interesting.
- 55:13First Yankee pitcher ever to record 200 strikeouts in consecutive seasons.
- 55:17All right, Kingman back at first.
- 55:19Here's the pitch to Bittner, and it's a strike on the outside corner.
- 55:22Left-handed batter against the right-hander, Bruce Keeson.
- 55:25One-nothing pirate's lead here in the fourth inning.
- 55:29Phillies are leading the Expos one-to-nothing in the top of the fourth at Olympic Stadium.
- 55:38Stretched by Keeson, the one strike pitch.
- 55:40A fly ball into shallow left.
- 55:42Milner coming in.
- 55:44Pirate left fielder has it, and Bittner is out.
- 55:47Second time that he's flied to Milner. One away.
- 55:52Top of the fourth inning from Philadelphia, Greg Lazinsky led off the inning
- 55:55and bounced to second base when Rodney Scott won away.
- 55:59Keeping you informed in that Montreal ball game, Scott is playing second for the Expos.
- 56:03Spire's playing short, Tamargo's catching, so Gary Carter's not in there.
- 56:08And Dave Cash, who delivered with a game-winning hit for the Expos yesterday,
- 56:13he is not in the starting lineup.
- 56:16Tony Perez is playing first base.
- 56:20Batter here is second baseman Steve Dillard.
- 56:23Fine play by Foley in the second inning through Dillard out.
- 56:26Kingman at first, one out.
- 56:28One-nothing bucks lead in the fourth inning. Dillard swings and misses strike one.
- 56:34For the first base, by the way, I want to send out a belated happy birthday to Mrs. Michael Baldy.
- 56:50Mike's wife's name is Phyllis, I think, isn't it? Is that right?
- 56:54Think so? Happy birthday to Mrs. Michael Baldy.
- 56:57Celebrating birthday yesterday, here's the one strike pitch.
- 57:00A swing and a miss and it's going through.
- 57:07Also a happy birthday to Martin DeRose in Canfield, Ohio.
- 57:16For the first base, Kingman back safely.
- 57:19Ball game is in the fourth inning.
- 57:21The Cubs had a pair of runners on in the first and had two runners on in the third,
- 57:25but both times the Bucks got the double play ball.
- 57:28A swing and a foul ball. Pirates getting their run in the first inning.
- 57:33Willie Stardewald sacrificed flies to medium center field, got Foley home.
- 57:47Top of the fourth inning.
- 57:53Dillard batting 279 on the ears.
- 57:56Right-handed batter facing the right-hander, Bruce Keeson.
- 57:59Here's the two strike pitch. Swung on, popped right side.
- 58:02Garner and Stardewald converging. Garner tried to make a diving catch.
- 58:05It's in play. It bounced inside the line.
- 58:08And Kingman will move to second, so it's a single for Steve Dillard.
- 58:12Garner tried to make a diving grab right at the line.
- 58:14The ball just eluded his glove and did bounce just inside the right-field line.
- 58:20So the Cubs have two on.
- 58:22One away in the inning and the batter will be Mick Kelleher.
- 58:25Boy, what a try by Garner. He had the best angle on the ball.
- 58:30Tried to dive out at the last second and make the grab,
- 58:34but it bounced inside the white line on the artificial surface and skipped into foul territory.
- 58:39Kingman moved up to second and Dillard's at first.
- 58:42So the Cubs have six hits. All singles.
- 58:46They've got two on with one away here in the fourth inning.
- 58:48And the batter, Mick Kelleher, steps in. He walked his first time up.
- 58:53In Montreal, Philadelphia outfielder Greg Rhodes fouled out the war in Cromartie.
- 58:58So two outs in the fourth inning at Montreal for the Phillies.
- 59:02Pista Kelleher is inside ball one.
- 59:05So the scores of the two games, Pirates 1-0 over the Cubs here in the fourth,
- 59:10Phillies 1-0 over the Expos in the fourth in Montreal.
- 59:20Stretched by Keeson. Here's the 1-0 pitch to Kelleher.
- 59:24And misses with a slider and it's 2-0.
- 59:36The John Candelaria throwing down on the Pirate bullpen right now.
- 59:40Here's the 2-0 pitch and it's high and inside.
- 59:54That being informed of the Philadelphia score, 1-0 over the Expos in the fourth inning.
- 1:00:01Here's the 3-0 pitch and a strike to Kelleher taking all the way.
- 1:00:06Kelleher batting in the number seven spot for Chicago.
- 1:00:09They're switching and catcher Tim Blackwell is on deck.
- 1:00:16Now the stretch and the 3-1 pitch.
- 1:00:18A ground ball left side, Madlock to his left hand and flips the Garner second for one.
- 1:00:21And to Sargent, double play!
- 1:00:23Pirates get their third double play in four innings.
- 1:00:27Started by Madlock as he came far off the third base line.
- 1:00:31Cutting in front of the shortstop, flipped it to Garner.
- 1:00:34And Phil with the pivot at second base fired to Sargent to erase Dillard and Kelleher.
- 1:00:38To the Cubs, no runs, that's two hits, double play.
- 1:00:42After three and a half, it's the Pirates one and the Chicago Cubs nothing.
- 1:00:55Alright, the ballgame moves down to the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:01:00By the way, the Phillies from the top of the fourth, they went down one, two, three.
- 1:01:03So that ballgame in Olympic Stadium is going to the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:01:07Our game moved to the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:01:10John Milner, Bill Madlock and Ed Ott are two up.
- 1:01:13Milner, 0-1 batting 275 on the year.
- 1:01:19I tell you, you can judge me of the nervous excitement of this whole ballpark here at Pittsburgh.
- 1:01:26Three River Stadium, Lynn McLaughlin, pitch to Milner.
- 1:01:30McLaughlin first base line, it's a good bunt. McLaughlin off the hill, makes a swipe at Milner and did not get him.
- 1:01:37Milner is on safely with a bunt single.
- 1:01:42Jerry Dale made the call.
- 1:01:44Now they're checking with Bruce Bremming.
- 1:01:51McLaughlin fielded the bunt up the first base line, tried to make the swipe tag on Milner going by.
- 1:01:59But Jerry Dale said no, he did not get him.
- 1:02:04So Milner is on in a leadoff situation.
- 1:02:15Lynn McLaughlin kneeling in foul territory now, he might have been injured on the play.
- 1:02:20Ball was right up the first base line, McLaughlin came over, fielded the ball,
- 1:02:25then tried to reach out to make the tag on Milner and Jerry Dale making the call,
- 1:02:33indicating that he was safe at first base.
- 1:02:38Matter of fact, after Dale made the call, or before he made it, he had to get out of the way because McLaughlin
- 1:02:43bumped him a bit, collided with the first base on fire.
- 1:02:53So Milner is on, McLaughlin's shaken up and he's kneeling in foul territory along the first base side.
- 1:03:00Say two things on that play.
- 1:03:02Jerry Dale was on the opposite side from the tag,
- 1:03:08and they looked like they were appealing to Bruce Bremming to see if Bremming would overrule Dale's ruling.
- 1:03:16Not a heated argument by any means.
- 1:03:18They did disrupt the call, dispute the call, and Mount Patano talking with Dale now.
- 1:03:23Milner is on with a bunch singles, and it's hit number five for the Pirates.
- 1:03:36So Milner's on, nobody out of the fourth inning.
- 1:03:43Just looking over to the right-hand side, they had a pretty good look at a replay of that spot up the line,
- 1:03:50and nobody seemed to give a very definitive approach as to what they thought the call should have been at first base.
- 1:03:55So Milner is on with nobody out, and Matlock steps in.
- 1:04:00Bill Matlock singles to left field in the second.
- 1:04:09Pirates leading one to nothing, batting in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:04:17And a foul back.
- 1:04:19Milner's taking off, strike one.
- 1:04:23Bill Matlock, ten-game hitting streak.
- 1:04:26He's just safely in 15 of his last 16 games.
- 1:04:29Matlock got a shot at a 300 season.
- 1:04:34He's got a nice ticket up there. He's right now at 298.
- 1:04:42And here's the stretch now by the right-hander to one strike.
- 1:04:44They've swung on a face-in into center field.
- 1:04:47Milner will round second and move to third safely.
- 1:04:50Pirates have runners at the corners with nobody out.
- 1:04:55Matlock gets his second into the afternoon.
- 1:05:04Pirates have two on, first and third, and nobody out.
- 1:05:08And with that face-in, Matlock's batting average is up to 299.
- 1:05:16Batter is catcher head-on.
- 1:05:22Exposed to the bottom of their inning, Perez bounced to Schmitz.
- 1:05:26Tamargo walked.
- 1:05:27Ballenstein struck out.
- 1:05:29Now Larry Parrish is batting there.
- 1:05:32Milner at third.
- 1:05:33Matlock at first.
- 1:05:34Pirates leading one to nothing, bottom of the fourth.
- 1:05:37McLaughlin delivers to Ott a swing and a foul back, strike one.
- 1:05:45Head-on at 273, batting average.
- 1:05:47Parrish just struck out.
- 1:05:49So Carlton has six strikeouts in the first four innings.
- 1:05:52The Expos did not score in the bottom of the fourth, so the Philadelphia ladies one to nothing going to the top of the fifth inning in Montreal.
- 1:05:59Pirates with an opportunity here.
- 1:06:01They've set up shop in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:06:04Head-on to Batter.
- 1:06:07Left-hander hitter against the right-hander McLaughlin.
- 1:06:09Runners in the corners, the one-strike pitching foul back on the screen.
- 1:06:16Nothing in two.
- 1:06:27Jam-packed on this final Sunday of the regular season.
- 1:06:30All the excitement of this 1979 Eastern Division chase as we keep you up to date on not only what's happening with the Bucks against the Cubs here,
- 1:06:39but a batter-by-flatter description of what the Expos are doing against the Phillies.
- 1:06:46McLaughlin took too much time, so head-on stepped out.
- 1:06:54Right-hander, two-strike pitch, Ott swings and pops it in foul territory.
- 1:06:59Kelleher in foul ground makes the play.
- 1:07:02Ott is out one away.
- 1:07:05That'll bring up second baseman Phil Garner.
- 1:07:08Garner bounced a short on the second.
- 1:07:10The Chicago Cubs, they've had three opportunities in the ballgame.
- 1:07:15They had two on with one out on the first.
- 1:07:18They had two on with one out on the third and had two men on with one out on the fourth.
- 1:07:22And in all three of their rallies, the Pirate infield turned the double play.
- 1:07:32Chicago bullpen left-hander Doug Capello warming up.
- 1:07:37Interesting to see what Madlock does in this situation.
- 1:07:42He's on with 32 stolen bases on the year, Buckner holding them on.
- 1:07:47Madlock at first, Milner at third, one-nothing Pirate lead, one out bottom of the fourth.
- 1:07:51McLaughlin fires the first and Madlock back safely.
- 1:08:05Right-hander set.
- 1:08:08Pitch to Garner, a shot up the middle, back to the mound, second baseman Dillard knocks it down but cannot make a play.
- 1:08:13Dillard scores, Pirate leads two to nothing.
- 1:08:16Dillard got leather on the ball right by the second base bag.
- 1:08:19Had he fielded the ground ball cleanly, he might have had a shot at stepping a second to get Madlock.
- 1:08:25Either case the run would have scored.
- 1:08:27Garner is on, it's going to be scored, an infield single.
- 1:08:31Madlock at second, Garner at first, it's now two-nothing Pirate as Garner picks up his 59th RBI of the year.
- 1:08:38Dillard lighting up behind the second base bag, he got leather on it, knocks the ball down and it's dribbled away and he had no play anywhere.
- 1:08:48Now Keeson the batter, as time calls the Cubs are going to set up their infield for the possibility of the Keeson bunt.
- 1:08:55One of the things that Bruce does very well of course is he has that good ability of being able to show bunt and then take a half swing and swing away.
- 1:09:03Very often our pitchers are told if you see the shortstop breaking for third, go ahead and take a swing at it.
- 1:09:08See what happens here, Madlock at second, Garner at first, one out, Pirate leading two-nothing.
- 1:09:13A stretch by McLaughlin, the pitch, Keeson shows bunt, takes it for a called strike.
- 1:09:27Bruce looking down at third base coach Joel Linnette, Pirate's got a run on the first, they've added a run here in the fourth to take a two-nothing lead.
- 1:09:39Right-hander Lynn McLaughlin comes set, one strike pitch, Keeson bunts it and it's tapped foul.
- 1:09:45Coming back to the Chicago on-deck circle, now it's 0-2.
- 1:09:59Here in the fourth, bunt single by Milner, base hit the center for Madlock, then after one out Garner's infield single got Milner home from third.
- 1:10:14McLaughlin two-strike pitch, Keeson bunting and he bunts it foul for the strikeout.
- 1:10:18McLaughlin gets his fourth strikeout, two away in the inning, and with two on the batter will be Omar Moreno.
- 1:10:27By the way, the infield single for Garner, it extends his inning streak to 14 games.
- 1:10:32And during the last 14 games, Garner with 21 hits in his last 48 at bat, that's a 438 pace.
- 1:10:42Phillies leading the Expos, one to nothing in the fifth, Pirate leading the Cubs, two-nothing in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:10:52And in the Philadelphia fifth, John Vukovic, fly to Cromartie for one-out Carlton is now batting.
- 1:10:57Here's the pitch, Moreno swings the line, shot down the left side, but it's going to strike foul into our both-ends strike one.
- 1:11:10Pirate starting the day, a game in front of the Expos.
- 1:11:14This is the final game of the regular season for our Buccos.
- 1:11:18If necessary, the Expos would have to play the Atlanta Braves in the doubleheader tomorrow.
- 1:11:27Stretching the one-strike pitch, they bat to right side, second baseman Dillard flips to the pitcher, McLaughlin covering.
- 1:11:33Play goes four to one, Moreno's out, the Pirates add to their lead.
- 1:11:37They get one run on three hits.
- 1:11:40The Philadelphia single by Garner got Milner home and after four innings of play, it's our Pittsburgh Pirates two at the Chicago Cubs, nothing.
- 1:11:55Ball game moves now to the fifth inning. Pirates leading by a score of two to nothing while the Philadelphia Phillies have a one-nothing lead over the Expos.
- 1:12:01Phillies are batting in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:12:03The switching match up there is Steve Rogers for the Expos and Steve Carlson for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:12:13In Philadelphia, by the way, at Veterans Stadium, the Eagles have taken a 10-7 lead over the Steelers in the third quarter.
- 1:12:21Philadelphia 10, Steelers 7, third quarter in Philadelphia.
- 1:12:29Bruce Keason getting ready to face Tim Blackwell, the number eight hitter of the Chicago batting order, then the pitcher McLaughlin do-up.
- 1:12:40Pirates in front, two to nothing.
- 1:12:53Playoffs are scheduled to start. The National League playoffs are scheduled to start Tuesday night in Cincinnati.
- 1:12:59Of course, what happens today and tomorrow could push the playoffs back a day.
- 1:13:03The American League playoffs are not scheduled to open until Wednesday night in Baltimore.
- 1:13:09Angels against the Orioles.
- 1:13:11Blackwell stepping in 0-1.
- 1:13:14Keason's pitch is a strike.
- 1:13:17They've gained three, four, and five of the National League Championship Series scheduled for the Eastern Division ballparks next weekend.
- 1:13:25Up high, one and one.
- 1:13:29Lynn McLaughlin, the Chicago pitcher, is on to Keason, ready with a 1-1 offering.
- 1:13:35And a strike on the outside corner as Mr. Bruce Freming goes up with the right hand.
- 1:13:39Phillies went down 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth, so it's now 1-0 Phillies exposed batting in the last of the fifth.
- 1:13:481-2 pitch, that side.
- 1:13:58Bruce Keason is 25th start of the year. Pitcher swung on and bowled back.
- 1:14:18Blackwell doing all the work for the Cubs behind the plate in this weekend's series.
- 1:14:22Here's the pitch. Swung on and popped in foul territory. Third base side, Madlock over near the seats, but it's out of play.
- 1:14:33Blackwell leading off the top of the fifth for Chicago.
- 1:14:45Milner playing way over near the line in left and Marano shading Blackwell towards the gap in left center.
- 1:14:52As Blackwell bats from the left side against Keason, the pitch is up high and outside at the full count.
- 1:15:01Ready with a payoff pitch. And it's high, ball four. Second walk issued by Keason.
- 1:15:08It goes to Blackwell and now the pitcher, Lynn McLaughlin.
- 1:15:18Pirates in front, 2-0.
- 1:15:21Stargell's sacrifice fly got Foley home in the first inning and the Garner infield single got Milner home from third in the last of the fourth.
- 1:15:41McLaughlin batting from the left side. He's a left-handed batter from Louisiana, Monroe, Louisiana.
- 1:15:51Here's the pitch to McLaughlin. He shows butt, takes up high, ball one.
- 1:15:54Corners of the pirate infield charging. Madlock from third, Stargell from first.
- 1:16:07First up shortstop, Ivan DeJesus is on deck. Stretched by Keason, the 1-0 pitch.
- 1:16:12And front of the plate, out is up. It's going to go to second base to Foley for one. On to first, double play.
- 1:16:18Pirates get their fourth double play in five innings. McLaughlin spun right in front of the plate.
- 1:16:23Eddard jumping out like a cat. Fired to Foley at second to erase Blackwell.
- 1:16:29And then on to first for the double play. Fourth double play in five innings.
- 1:16:37Flore right out in front of the plate and never hesitated. Fired to Foley to erase Blackwell at second.
- 1:16:43And then Foley fired on to Garner. As Garner covered the first base back, so on the double play it goes two to six to four.
- 1:16:54Garner looked like a first baseman the way he stretched off the bag on that.
- 1:17:00All right, nobody on. Two down.
- 1:17:06And Ivan DeJesus is the batter.
- 1:17:11Boy, I tell you, Keason, they always say old baseball cliché, double play, I bet you his best friend,
- 1:17:18Fits the d'hais who shows Bunt takes a strike. Well, Keason getting some help from his friends here this afternoon.
- 1:17:28Here's the one strike pitch and it's inside one and one.
- 1:17:35Nobody on with two down. Pirates leading two to nothing.
- 1:17:41There's a bouncer to the right side. Second baseman Garner has it put to Sargell and the Cubs are gone. In the fifth, no runs, no hits, a walk, a double play.
- 1:17:50After four and a half innings from this afternoon's game at Three River Stadium, Pirates two in the Chicago Cubs, nothing.
- 1:17:58All game moves down to the bottom of the fifth inning. By the way, in case you're wondering, Pirates have turned four double plays this afternoon.
- 1:18:04The Pirate Club record is sixth in a single game. That was against St. Louis September the 6th in 1948.
- 1:18:12Iffoly stepping in, leading off the last of the fifth. Iffoly walked and scored a run on the first inning, singled in the third.
- 1:18:19So he has an eight game hitting streak. He did safely in all eight games of this home stand. McLaughlin's pitch and Iffoly takes a strike.
- 1:18:34McLaughlin's gone all the way for the Cubs. Keason all the way for the Pirates. Iffoly swings on an inside pitch and a fly ball into left center field.
- 1:18:40Scott Thompson over, knock his way to Kingman and Kingman makes the play.
- 1:18:45In left center field, Kingman and Thompson converging, but the Cub left fielder took care of it. One away in the fifth.
- 1:18:52Now before Parker steps in, we'll step out and pause for station identification on this final Sunday of the regular season.
- 1:18:58It's great to have you with us on the Pirates baseball network.
- 1:19:01For all your travel arrangements by air or car, stop in the Mid-State 3A Auto Club's Line Street downtown Johnstown. This is WJNLFM Johnstown.
- 1:19:13Parker stepping in two for two, Dave with a nine game hitting streak.
- 1:19:18A week ago when we were in Chicago, Parker's batting average was 295.
- 1:19:23Now as he steps in here in the fifth inning, his batting average is at 310.
- 1:19:27So in a week, it's jumped up 15 points. Here's the pitch. Parker takes down a low ball one. Nobody on, one down.
- 1:19:36Bottom of the fifth. Pirates are leading here by a score of two to nothing.
- 1:19:42The Philly Expo game, the Phillies are leading one to nothing, going to the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:19:49McLaughlin, one, no. He stumbled as he delivered to the pitch or tried to deliver to the pitch and held onto the ball.
- 1:19:55So rather than let go, he held on as he was stumbling down the front side of the mound.
- 1:20:00In the Expo fifth, Chris Speier singled off the glove of Mike Schmidt.
- 1:20:06Steve Rogers with the front moving, Speier to second, but then Carlton struck out Pro Marty and got Scott to bounce to Schmidt to end the inning.
- 1:20:14So Steve Carlton with seven strikeouts against the Expos in the first five innings.
- 1:20:20Here's the one-oh pitch. Low and inside runs back to the screen and it's two and oh.
- 1:20:26Pirates with seven hits in the ball game, Bucks leading by a score of two to nothing.
- 1:20:40Here's the two-oh pitch. Bounce outside of first and it's two and one.
- 1:20:50Oh, we've got everybody working overtime, everybody keeping their eyes and ears open to the Expos.
- 1:20:56We're all rooting along with the Steelers, but they're down on the third quarter to the Eagles, 17 to seven.
- 1:21:04Here it's two-nothing Bucks, Parker batting in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:21:10McLaughlin with a two-one pitch, a base hit to left field.
- 1:21:15Parker had five hits yesterday. He is three for three this afternoon.
- 1:21:23Dave with 193 hits on the year. His batting average is now up to 311.
- 1:21:36Parker's a four with one away in the bottom of the fifth. That is hit number eight for the Bucks.
- 1:21:42Batter Willie Sargell, Sargell with a sacrifice fly in the first.
- 1:21:46He flied out to Kingman down the left field line in the third.
- 1:21:50Two-nothing Bucks lead. Still he's in front of Montreal, one-nothing in the sixth inning.
- 1:21:56Parker running, pitches a ball, throw to second base, is in time. Parker is caught stealing.
- 1:22:02The throw by Blackwell. Bounce to the shortstop.
- 1:22:09And made on the shortstop, he made the tag and the sliding, Parker, so two away in the inning.
- 1:22:24Pitch to Sargell misses two and oh.
- 1:22:29We've not had much success against Blackwell and McCubs in the stolen base department this afternoon.
- 1:22:34Two-oh pitch, foul down the left side out of play.
- 1:22:46National League record, by the way, for most double plays in a nine-inning game is seven.
- 1:22:51Houston did it against San Francisco in May of 1969. It is both the National and Major League record.
- 1:22:57Pitch to Sargell is a strike.
- 1:23:00Pretty good seven double plays in nine innings. We've gotten four in the first five.
- 1:23:11Here's the two-two pitch. Sargell swings, a line shot into right field ball, well hit, it is up, it's on.
- 1:23:17A home run for Willie Sargell. A line drive over off the stadium wall in right field.
- 1:23:23Sargell gets his 32nd home run of the year and the Buccos take a three-to-nothing lead over the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:23:36Sargell jumping on a two-two pitch and boy did it jump out in a hurry.
- 1:23:43Line drive home run for Sargell, number 32 on the air.
- 1:23:49Willie greeted in front of the dugout and tipping his cap to the crowd.
- 1:23:53Boy, anybody that's got anything black and gold here this afternoon, pom-poms and keycaps and pirate caps and bad bandanas, they're waving it all.
- 1:24:04Standing ovation, Sargell will come out again.
- 1:24:11Willie comes out and tips his cap to a standing pirate crowd.
- 1:24:15Sargell with a line drive home run over the wall in right field off Lynn McLaughlin, three-nothing, pirates lead, Milner the batter.
- 1:24:26Here's McLaughlin's first pitch and Milner takes a strike.
- 1:24:34Nine hits for the pirates, one strike pitch is up high.
- 1:24:47Right-hander has the sign, here's the one-one pitch, swung on, popped in foul territory,
- 1:24:53Callagher their third baseman over near the seats but it's back out of play.
- 1:24:57Well, we're down to the final day of the regular season and another winner in our home run jackpot.
- 1:25:05We've been giving them away all year long.
- 1:25:12And we'll pass along another winner for you in just a second.

- 1:26:04Couple of notes here as we get ready to go to the sixth.
- 1:26:08Louis Spagnolia of Freedom, Pennsylvania celebrated his 80th birthday on Friday.
- 1:26:18They're going to be celebrating his birthday today.
- 1:26:20A note from his daughter-in-law, Patricia Spagnola.
- 1:26:24Happy birthday, Louis.
- 1:26:26And happy birthday to Joseph Mitter from Connellsville, 85 years of age yesterday.
- 1:26:33All right, the Pirates are leading three to nothing.
- 1:26:36The Phillies have a one to nothing lead over the Expos.
- 1:26:40Philadelphia is batting now in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:26:45Matter of fact, in the sixth, Larry Bowe walks.
- 1:26:49Big McBride struck out and now Mike Schmidt is the batter.
- 1:26:52So the Phillies have one on, one out, leading one to nothing, sixth inning at Montreal.
- 1:26:57Two, the big number, combination of Pirate victory and an expo defeat would give it to the Bucs.
- 1:27:04Thompson trying to butt his way on and fouls it off, strike one.
- 1:27:24Pirates got a single run on the first, one on the fourth, and one on the fifth.
- 1:27:28Chicago now batting in the sixth.
- 1:27:30There's the one strike pitch about there to start with first.
- 1:27:33He'll take the unassisted put out on Thompson, one away in the Chicago sixth.
- 1:27:45First baseman, Billy Buckner.
- 1:27:47That'll bring up first baseman Billy Buckner.
- 1:27:56Buckner one for two single to the first, bounce into a double play in the third.
- 1:28:05Pirate three, cubs nothing.
- 1:28:07Chicago batting in the top of the sixth.
- 1:28:14Left side, Matlock cutting across the infield and the bouncer goes to Sargil
- 1:28:17and a fine play by Matlock to get Buckner two away in the Chicago sixth.
- 1:28:24Sargil hitting a home run on the bottom of the fifth off Lynn McLaughlin.
- 1:28:27Willie hit a home run off McLaughlin here at Three River Stadium on May the 30th.
- 1:28:46Thirty-two home runs for Sargil.
- 1:28:49Dave Kingman steps in, he's one for two.
- 1:28:56And Willie is fifth in the home run race this year.
- 1:29:02Kingman number one with 47.
- 1:29:05Schmidt with 45.
- 1:29:07Dave Winfield with 34.
- 1:29:10Bob Horner hit his 33rd today.
- 1:29:12He is fourth.
- 1:29:13Sargil is fifth at 32.
- 1:29:15Kingman a swing and a miss, strike one.
- 1:29:24Cubs have nobody on, two down, top of the sixth inning.
- 1:29:32Bruce Keeson all the way for the Bucks, the one strike, mid swing and a foul back.
- 1:29:37Nothing in two.
- 1:29:53Scheduled for tomorrow, right now up in the air,
- 1:29:57pending what happens here this afternoon with the Bucks and the Cubs exposing Phillies.
- 1:30:05The conference is down low to Kingman, it's popped up on the net, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:30:18Phillies batting in the top of the sixth inning, Larry Boas swipes second base.
- 1:30:22Boas is second with two outs and Luzinski is at bat right now.
- 1:30:36By the one-two pitch, the Kingman swung on and drive into left field, well hit.
- 1:30:40Robinson going back, he's at the fence and it is gone, a home run.
- 1:30:45Dave Kingman at home run here in the top of the sixth inning with nobody on and two outs.
- 1:30:53Bill Robinson who went into left field to replace John Milner, went right back to the wall but it was over the fence in left.
- 1:31:02Kingman gets his 48th of the year and it's now a three to one ball game.
- 1:31:14And the batter, right fielder Larry Bittner.
- 1:31:23Bittner is over two, has flied to Milner twice, swings to the first pitch and taps it outside of first base bag.
- 1:31:28I might have caught him in the batter's box as well, he's limping around, strike one.
- 1:31:40This posted the third quarter score that we told you about, they've thrown it out, the Eagles leading the Pittsburgh Steelers 17 to 7.
- 1:31:53Kingman's 48th home run of the year, so it's a three to one pirate lead, the pitcher's up high to Bittner.
- 1:32:12Swings and fouls it off left side, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:32:16Understand that Larry Bowe went to third in a wild pitch and Greg Lazinski walked so the Phillies have runners at first and third, top of the sixth inning, two outs at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
- 1:32:26Here it's the top of the sixth inning after two outs, Kingman with a solo home run at 48th of the year.
- 1:32:33And now to count one ball and two strikes on Larry Bittner, tees his pitch up high.
- 1:32:38Bittner had a notion but laid off.
- 1:32:42Right hander Enrique Romo, left hander Grant Jackson warming in the pirate bullpen.
- 1:32:49Here's the pitch swung on and popped down the left side, church dot Foley calling for it, can't thunder it, and has it the Cubs are out in the sixth inning, they have to settle for one run on one hit.
- 1:33:00The home run by Kingman after five and a half innings to play, it's our Pittsburgh Pirates three and the Chicago Cubs one.
- 1:33:08Ball game moves to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pirates got a run in the first inning when Stargell Sacrifice Fly scored Foley.
- 1:33:14Pirates made it two nothing in the fourth, the Garner-Insfield singles got Milner home from third, it was two nothing at that point.
- 1:33:20And then Stargell's 32nd home run of the year with two outs in the fifth on a 2-2 pitch, making it three nothing Pirates.
- 1:33:28So Stargell with two RBIs this afternoon, 82 RBIs of the season.
- 1:33:32The Kingman home run on the top of the sixth inning, accounting for the lone Chicago run.
- 1:33:36Now the bottom of the sixth, Bill Madlock, Eddott and Phil Garner the batter.
- 1:33:41Batters here in the sixth inning, Madlock steps in two for two.
- 1:33:47Bill Madlock, his batting average has jumped 18 points in the last 10 or 11 days.
- 1:34:01Madlock two for two this afternoon, single to left in the second, single to center in the fourth.
- 1:34:06Here's the pitch to him, slung on and pox it up.
- 1:34:09Third baseman Kellinger drifting into foul territory about halfway up the third base line and he makes the grab in foul ground.
- 1:34:16Madlock is down one away.
- 1:34:22John Milner left the game with a slight pulled muscle in the thigh.
- 1:34:33Left the game after five complete, Bill Robinson went into play left field in the sixth.
- 1:34:38Eddott, the batter, he's over two, has struck out and fouled out.
- 1:34:42Nobody on, one down, bottom of the sixth, Pirates leading three to one.
- 1:34:57Garner on deck, McLaughlin's gone all the way for the Cubs and the first pitch is low and inside, ball one.
- 1:35:14Now the 1-0 pitch, a swing in a foul, 10 minutes one and two.
- 1:35:29Right-hander Reddy, here's the pitch to Otte, faster left side, stretched out to Hayes to Chaz, it fires on to Buckner.
- 1:35:35Otte's out two away on the Pirates sixth inning and brings up the second baseman Phil Garner,
- 1:35:40Phil with the infield, single in the fourth, that got Milner home with run number two.
- 1:35:55By the way, we understand that in that Philadelphia game, Greg Gross singled a center to drive in Larry Boa.
- 1:36:01So the Philly lead is now two to nothing over Montreal.
- 1:36:05The Phillies leading two to nothing in the sixth inning at Olympic Stadium, pitch to Garner is a strike and the Phillies are still batting.
- 1:36:15Two to nothing, Philadelphia at the top of the sixth inning, here it is three to one, Pirates in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:36:21Here's the one strike pitch, in for a call strike two.
- 1:36:34McLaughlin, O2 pitch, outside.
- 1:36:43Phillies got the bases loaded in that top of the sixth inning, but then John Vukovic grounded his spire prod number three.
- 1:36:48So the Phillies settle for one run and they have a two to nothing lead over Montreal after five and a half innings.
- 1:36:55Pitch to Garner and it's two and two.
- 1:37:00Garner with a 294 batting average standing in, Bob being informed of that score in Montreal now.
- 1:37:07Here's a two to pitch, it's outside and a full count.
- 1:37:11So the Bucks lead the Cubs by two here at three rivers.
- 1:37:14The Phillies lead the Expos by a pair in Montreal.
- 1:37:29McLaughlin ready with a payoff pitch, Garner swings and Thompson and Foul, Tarisdor get out of play.
- 1:37:34It will, back into the seats and it's three and two.
- 1:37:57Bottom of the sixth inning, nobody on with two down.
- 1:38:00Pirates in front three to one, a full count on Garner.
- 1:38:05Here's the payoff pitch, swung on and popped out of play.
- 1:38:24Pirates with nine hits in the ball game, that at least one in each of the first five innings.
- 1:38:32Bob Lynn McLaughlin leading three to one.
- 1:38:34Here's the payoff pitch, swung on, a shot to third.
- 1:38:37Kelleher has his fires across to Buckner and Garner is out.
- 1:38:40Pirates are retired one, two, three in the sixth.
- 1:38:43After six, complete inning to play.
- 1:38:45On this final Sunday of the regular season at Three Rivers Stadium, it's Arbeco's three and Chicago one.
- 1:38:51Ball game moves to the seventh, a total after six pirates, three runs, nine hits and no errors.
- 1:39:01The Cubs one run on seven hits and no errors.
- 1:39:04Bruce Keason works the first six innings, gave up only one run, seven hits, two walks, no strikeouts.
- 1:39:11And now Scott Tukolby is going to come on as the new Pirate pitcher.
- 1:39:18And Tukolby will go into the number nine spot of the Pirate batting order,
- 1:39:22which means he would lead off the bottom of the seventh because Tukolby is the only change.
- 1:39:29Here in the top of the seventh, for Tukolby, it is 94th appearance of the year.
- 1:39:4194 appearances, Tukolby with 10 wins and eight losses.
- 1:39:49Has 30 saves. He is one save away from tying the record of 31.
- 1:39:56And he comes on here in the seventh inning, again to keep you informed on that Philadelphia score.
- 1:40:02The Phillies are leading the Expos two to nothing. Montreal is batting in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:40:07The Phillies got a run in the third on a Baker-Bride sacrifice fly that got Steve Harrelton home.
- 1:40:12That was in the third. And then in the sixth inning, a Greg Rose single to center got Larry Boa home to make it two to nothing Philadelphia.
- 1:40:21So the Pirates lead by two here over Chicago. The Phillies lead the Expos by two in the sixth inning in Montreal.
- 1:40:28We're ready for the seventh year's Milo.
- 1:40:30All right, Lanny, as Tukolby comes on, he's going to try to nail one down not only for Keeson but for the Bucks
- 1:40:37and hope that the Phillies can do the same against the Expos at the big O. And Dillard will be leading it off.
- 1:40:43And Tukolby, an amazing fellow, despite all the scouting reports, became a big league pitcher and has become a big league star.
- 1:40:57Basic and cubs for the sixth time. Keeson's old blister problem reared its ugly head again and that's why Buster had to leave the game.
- 1:41:10So Tukolby is on in relief of Keeson. Dillard one for two at a base hit in the fourth inning.
- 1:41:19He's one for six in the series. Tukolby winding pitch on the way. A ball inside at the knees.
- 1:41:25Mick Chilahur is due up next. Blackwell down in the hole.
- 1:41:29We're just moving into the seventh inning at Three Rivers in Pittsburgh on a truly delightful day.
- 1:41:34Only one thing to make it better. Win this thing. Here's the one-oh pitch.
- 1:41:38And a strike called across the letters on a riding submarine and it's one and one.
- 1:41:43I know that Chuck Tanner's mother is listening in Newcastle today.
- 1:41:47She's been a little under the weather here the last few days and I hope things happen just the way she wants them to here today.
- 1:41:54There's a strike call. What a dream that would be for Mrs. Tanner Senior up in Newcastle for her son Chuck too.
- 1:42:03Win a division flag as he came near the hometown back at home ground to manage.
- 1:42:07Here's a ball outside two and two. So to Chuck Tanner's mother in Newcastle, hope you're feeling a lot better today
- 1:42:13and hope you're ready to get out for those playoff games because it looks like they're going to be here.
- 1:42:18Let's hope so. There's a bouncer. Short, boldly charges. Fires and he's out.
- 1:42:23Went away.
- 1:42:25Dillard is out short to first. Foley to Stargell.
- 1:42:30The Pirates have really brought their leatherwork to the ballpark today.
- 1:42:34We've had great plays by Madlock and Foley and Garner and Stargell.
- 1:42:39The Bucks have ripped off four double plays here today.
- 1:42:43Now Kelleher who has walked and bounced into one of those double plays stepping in with nobody on in front of him and went away.
- 1:42:50Right hand reliever Tickalvy ready to work on Kelleher and here's the pitch to him and it is a little outside to make it one ball and no strikes.
- 1:43:06Blackwell has moved on deck. Nobody on base. Dillard's started the inning by bouncing to Foley.
- 1:43:12Tickalvy into that big motion. Here's the pitch and low outside with his sinker makes it 2-0.
- 1:43:22Cubs got on the board in the sixth inning on a towering home run by Kingman which just about ensures him the home run title.
- 1:43:30Here's the 2-0 and a strike is called.
- 1:43:35Mike Schmidt would have to go on a real tear and they'd almost have to have extra innings at Montreal and nobody wants that.
- 1:43:42At least nobody that's a Pirates fan. Here's the pitch. That's outside, makes it 3-1 to McKelleher.
- 1:43:52Three balls and a strike.
- 1:43:59Tickalvy ready, kicks and brings it and it is a strike called. Unbuckled his belt with that one and it's 3-2.
- 1:44:12See what he serves up for a payoff here to Kelleher playing third for the Cubs today and he walks him and was outside at the letters.
- 1:44:20First pass given up by Tick. It's the third Cub to walk in the game.
- 1:44:25And it'll bring up Blackwell who's bounced a second and picked up a base on balls. He's over one.
- 1:44:31Remember there are both reserve and general admission tickets available for the championship playoff here. You can get them.
- 1:44:37You folks listening to the game in the stands can get them on the way out at Gates ANC.
- 1:44:42Right now it's Tickalvy and Foley and Ott having a little chat. They've got a runner at first and Blackwell the batter and it looks like Blackwell's going to be lifted in favor of switch hitter Ken Henderson.
- 1:44:52So they've had a little chat out on the hill. Full strategy meeting.
- 1:45:06Henderson is going to bat for Blackwell and on Tavares another switch hitter is out. He's going to bat for the pitcher.
- 1:45:13But Joe Malpatano going right by the book. He's going to play it right off to the hill here.
- 1:45:28I'd kill her at first with one down a walk put him there. Henderson batting 226 to homers and 10 RBI's batting left handed against Tickalvy lined and fouled down the left side. It'll kick up into the box seat railing and on out into left for Bill Robinson will chase it down.
- 1:45:45I said there were two pitch hitters some guy in the front row leaned out over and wanted to make sure if after four years when I say it you don't know I mean it. You haven't been listening.
- 1:45:59No balls in one strike.
- 1:46:06The pitch and it is outside of the knees boy that was borderline. I held it there trying to make an impression on the plate umpire one ball and one strike.
- 1:46:17Dillard bounce the short to start the inning killer walk. He takes his lead at first. Darrell trying to hold him close to Colby and relief of peace and as we play in the seventh and here's the pitch on the way to Henderson.
- 1:46:28Sinker low two and one Jackson and Romo heating in the bullpen.
- 1:46:36Pirates got a run in the first a run in the fourth a run in the fifth. Cubs got a run in the sixth. It's three to one Pittsburgh and the Cubs are batting in the seventh inning. Pitch on the way outside ball three.
- 1:46:55He's going to have to look at another switch hitter here in a moment.
- 1:47:02The Colby needs to get a page out of Keeson's double playbook.
- 1:47:12Now Henderson stepping back a moment they might have something on with Kelleher Henderson want to make sure that he read cookie Rojas correctly runners not going and there's a line foul down the left side it's going to end up in the pirate bullpen.
- 1:47:29Don Robinson is also available today.
- 1:47:33Chuck Tanner that felt well enough that he could help today if he was needed.
- 1:47:45Bucks on top by a pair and the runs belong to Keeson to Colby's trying to save them for him. Henderson waiting and a three to pitch a bouncer through the left side of a tip.
- 1:47:57Tell her it will streak defer the throw will come to second from Robinson the Garner. So the Cubs set up shop on the Colby and it'll bring up on Severus. First it off seek a tip for Chicago.
- 1:48:14The first of the various will be announced as the pinch hitter and Harvey Hattick's is going to be on his way.
- 1:48:28Had a double that hurt yesterday drove in two runs in fact it was a knockout punch on Blylevin.
- 1:48:44The Phillies are still batting.
- 1:48:59They're going to do nothing.
- 1:49:15Harvey Hattick's coaching coach headed back into the dugout Jackson and Rommel continue to throw Justin Cakes on Severus hitting 285 for homers and 56 runs batted in two for six in the series with two rupees against us for the year he's 15 for 54 with five runs batted in.
- 1:49:35The high ball with any depth makes it a one run game. So here's where if it doesn't sound greedy we need our fifth double play.
- 1:49:48And when you're fighting for a pennant greed doesn't enter into it. You're just trying to get what you want and that's a ball outside.
- 1:49:56The Texas is due up next and the natives are getting restless here.
- 1:50:05One ball and no strikes runners on the corners with one away on Severus batting left handed against the Colby is a fly ball bending down the left side Robinson will make the play toward the corner, but it will get Keller her home, and it is indeed a one run game.
- 1:50:21The fly RBI to left off the bat of on Severus that makes it three to two bucks still in the lead but down to a run advantage.
- 1:50:34So still a runner at first the pinch runner Siebert up to the top of the bond a suit.
- 1:50:49The lead today is one for three gives him two for 12 in the series.
- 1:50:59So a walk and a single and a sacrifice fly put the Cubs on the board with their second run.
- 1:51:05Here's the pitch on the way to the assistant the strike is in there.
- 1:51:09Here in the strike zone and it's all in one.
- 1:51:19Look back here's the pitch.
- 1:51:23There's a high fly ball shallow right center.
- 1:51:26Parker says I've got it.
- 1:51:27The Cobra is there.
- 1:51:29The Cobra is there.
- 1:51:39One run one hit no errors a walk and a man left.
- 1:51:42Now it's time for the last seven-footing stretch of the regular season and a crowd that looks like it's somewhere in the vicinity of 40,000 ready to get up and do just that.
- 1:51:52They'll be bringing on a new pitcher and the Bucks will be looking for insurance with this score.
- 1:51:57Dick Kiddrow is on.
- 1:52:00Here's an entity.
- 1:52:01Kieson and McLaughlin both the starters through identical numbers of pitches 80.
- 1:52:09They are both gone.
- 1:52:11Kiddrow is on for Chicago.
- 1:52:19Kiddrow with a 250 80 RA 11 and five and he picked up four saves.
- 1:52:30Following that Philly ball game the Phillies did not score in the top of the seventh now in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:52:35Ellis Valentine has flied out.
- 1:52:37Larry Parrish struck out so two away nobody on bottom of the seventh for the Expos.
- 1:52:43Steve Carlton has nine strikeouts this afternoon against the Expos.
- 1:52:48Along with Kiddrow their other battery has changed and Crimm is on to do the catching.
- 1:52:56Get to Colby will be leading it off here.
- 1:53:07Colby leading it off in the seventh.
- 1:53:08Pirates leading by a run in a three to two game.
- 1:53:12After Teek will go up to the top with Moreno and Foley.
- 1:53:18We've had a home run on each side.
- 1:53:20Starchel for the Bucks.
- 1:53:21Kingman for the Cubs.
- 1:53:27Starchel got his 32nd.
- 1:53:29The Lions rise and knock the hole in the stadium wall out beyond the right field fence.
- 1:53:35He's got his 48th home run.
- 1:53:44All right, DeColby ready to step in now against Dick Kiddrow.
- 1:53:51Kiddrow's first pitch to DeColby, Bunsett Powell.
- 1:53:54Looked like he was trying to push it up the first base side with Buckner playing back.
- 1:54:03DeColby doesn't get a chance to bat that much.
- 1:54:05Late relievers seldom do.
- 1:54:11But he's had a couple of hits this year and driven in a run.
- 1:54:16Stry called on the inside corner and Teek is gone on three pitches.
- 1:54:22So Kiddrow opens up.
- 1:54:23Started a breaking ball way inside that back Teek off the plate and when it broke it caught the inside corner.
- 1:54:31Six strikeouts against the Pirates in the game.
- 1:54:34McGlosson had five before he left.
- 1:54:36Here's Omar Moreno, 0 for 3.
- 1:54:42Kelleher made a fine play on Moreno in the third inning.
- 1:54:45Robbins with a chance to beat out a shot down the third base side.
- 1:54:49Mick Kelleher showing some good glove work in this there.
- 1:54:53He's playing both second and third.
- 1:54:54Here's a pitch to Moreno and a ball outside. It's 1 and 0.
- 1:55:01Foley has moved on deck.
- 1:55:04Pirates has three runs, nine hits.
- 1:55:05The Cubs two runs, eight hits.
- 1:55:07There have been no errors in the game.
- 1:55:09Here's the 1-0 to the Antelope.
- 1:55:12Outside ball two.
- 1:55:15Markner leading the way again today with three hits.
- 1:55:18RBI's start.
- 1:55:19He'll pair one on a home or another on a sacrifice play. Giner got a run home with a single.
- 1:55:24Outside ball three.
- 1:55:34See if we can get him on and test this young catcher's arm.
- 1:55:38There is a strike.
- 1:55:41Bruce Kim, K-I-M-M, he caught the late inning yesterday, did a good job.
- 1:55:49The 3-1 to Moreno.
- 1:55:52Ball, he walks it.
- 1:56:04All right, the leading base dealer with 77. Moreno, let's see if we try to manufacture something here and up the ante.
- 1:56:12And, Bruce, that's three to two score in favor of the Pirates.
- 1:56:16You got Foley stepping in.
- 1:56:17Markner on deck.
- 1:56:18Tarchel down in the hole.
- 1:56:32Throw over, not close.
- 1:56:33He just lobbed it over.
- 1:56:34That could be a decoy.
- 1:56:37You want to take a chance on here with Foley batting.
- 1:56:40And, Markner, do up next.
- 1:56:43You want to take advantage of that walk if you can.
- 1:56:45And that's the purpose of it here as Moreno takes his lead.
- 1:56:48Not a big lead.
- 1:56:49Throw over.
- 1:56:50Hey, almost caught him leaning.
- 1:56:53Didrow fired it over that time.
- 1:57:03Now Moreno gets up, goes after the lead.
- 1:57:05Still doesn't have that front foot out on the carpet.
- 1:57:09Didrow checks him over the shoulder he looked.
- 1:57:12And he hits Foley and the ball ricochets and knocks the plate on fire, Bruce Fromming down.
- 1:57:18And the both trainers are out to check Fromming.
- 1:57:24The ball hits Foley, ricocheted, and Jard Fromming and he is down.
- 1:57:36And the way they're working, I think it snuck in there and got him in the Adam's apple.
- 1:57:40Or at least in the neck somewhere.
- 1:57:43Dr. Joseph Feingold has been the team doctor here for many, many years, was out of the
- 1:57:48stands like a rocket shot down there to look.
- 1:57:56They're so crowded around him and now with Dr. Feingold completely blocking our view
- 1:58:00from directly behind home plate.
- 1:58:03No way to tell just where they are administering the first day, they're getting him up.
- 1:58:23I think it was more on the clavicle than in the neck the way he's...
- 1:58:38Other umpires are there to see if he's going to be able to continue.
- 1:58:45Got him on the collarbone more than on the neck and might have caught the side of his
- 1:58:57face right the back of where that pad on the mask protects him.
- 1:59:04I think he's going to be all right to continue.
- 1:59:07When the game does get underway again it will be Moreno second, Foley first, and Parker will
- 1:59:12be the batter.
- 1:59:20They're keeping a card.
- 1:59:22Pidrow is batting eighth on the cup card and Kim is batting ninth.
- 1:59:26Now the other umpires have called for Tony Vardarone the pirate trainer to come out again.
