- 0:30All right, let's rock in Revs.
- 0:32There we go.
- 0:33Welcome to Drive through episode number 59.
- 0:36This is our monthly recap.
- 0:38Put together a menu of automotive motorsport and
- 0:40entertaining car adjacent news.
- 0:43Now, let's pull up to the window number one for some automotive news.
- 0:47You notice, Tanya, he puts the gun there just like Brad does.
- 0:50Mm-hmm.
- 0:51It's something about the human mind.
- 0:53We just add that the, the window number one.
- 0:56Well, William, we are picking up where we left off.
- 0:58Welcome back to the studio.
- 0:59Thanks for joining us tonight.
- 1:01Lots to talk about, but it starts with these really stupid hats.
- 1:05You don't look good in that hat.
- 1:07You don't like my hat Not worn.
- 1:08That way it looks worse when I put it all the way on my head.
- 1:13Wait, wait.
- 1:14I'll show you what it looks like.
- 1:16It is better that way.
- 1:17It's better.
- 1:18No, it's totally worse.
- 1:19This, no, it's better.
- 1:20It is better.
- 1:21That way.
- 1:22I can't get my headphones on.
- 1:25Oh, there you go.
- 1:27What the hell did you do to that thing?
- 1:28You sit on it.
- 1:29It was my suitcase that took care of the hat.
- 1:31It does look like the lone ranger thing here.
- 1:34It's all sorts of bent up and whatnot.
- 1:36Oh my God.
- 1:36My band already broke.
- 1:37I mean, it broke when I set it down on my stand over here.
- 1:40Just fell right off.
- 1:41I'm like, yeah, I'm not even bothering.
- 1:43Doesn't fit my head anyway, so this is perfect.
- 1:45I have no idea how they could get away.
- 1:47I, I should have stood there for about 10 minutes to see what sucker paid.
- 1:50$60 for one of those, right?
- 1:52I wouldn't pay 'em six bucks for this hat.
- 1:54No, I saw that price.
- 1:55Like that was sad.
- 1:56So the audience is looking at this behind the scenes on Patreon going, what
- 2:00the hell is up with this stupid hat?
- 2:01So this is the infamous.
- 2:03Docents straw hat that you're supposed to wear at events like Pebble and other
- 2:07concourses and, and so we have not the Professor John Summers to thank for the
- 2:12acquisition of these wonderful hats.
- 2:14As we were talking about on our last drive through, we were getting ready to
- 2:17embark upon this massive guy's vacation.
- 2:20You know, all this car stuff.
- 2:21And so it starts.
- 2:23In San Francisco at the Hillsborough Concourse basically for 30 days.
- 2:27A little break for a day here or two here then.
- 2:30But yeah, getting out there, I'd never been to San Francisco too.
- 2:33That was a first for me.
- 2:34I've always been Southern California, everything like that.
- 2:36So that was awesome about that.
- 2:37But you know, it was well worked it because friend of mine hooked
- 2:40us up with a little shop visit.
- 2:43So we go to the old Riley, what is it?
- 2:45Restoration shop or, which was phenomenal.
- 2:48Can't remember.
- 2:48What was the name of that shop we went to?
- 2:50Wasn't it Bob Riley's place?
- 2:51But then Brian, uh, what's Brian's last name?
- 2:53More, whatever.
- 2:54But he took it over.
- 2:55But he moved it from where it was, it was, and this is a cool thing 'cause
- 2:58if you drive by, you think it's an abandoned building, a hundred percent.
- 3:01You, you not know what's in, like there's an old refrigerator
- 3:03sitting outside the building.
- 3:04This an old chicken farm or something.
- 3:06The hatchery, I don't know, something like that.
- 3:07But you go inside, it's one of those.
- 3:09Old cool ass buildings, all brick.
- 3:11It's got the big wood hand, Hoon, dormer, drafters.
- 3:14Awesome.
- 3:15And then, I mean, just BRM, dhe, what you saw in there was just incredible and
- 3:21respecting owners' privacy and whatnot.
- 3:24You know, we really didn't, we took some pictures, but we didn't share
- 3:26because we just, you know, hey, you didn't want, it was like, which is
- 3:28fine, which is cool, but I mean.
- 3:29It was unbelievable the cars that were in there.
- 3:32And it was cool to see because you got stuff that was just starting.
- 3:35You had stuff that was basically just getting touched up or you
- 3:38know, a little fine tuned for some concourse and stuff like that.
- 3:41Well, millions of dollars worth of cars.
- 3:44And you'd drive by it going, Jed Clampett lives there.
- 3:46And you'd never pay attention to it ever again.
- 3:48You know?
- 3:49No, you wouldn't at all.
- 3:50And it's not like it's got any shape or anything to it.
- 3:53Think Okay, there's a bunch of carless or, I mean, just, it's crazy.
- 3:56'cause I mean, all the metal working equipment seeing, I mean it just,
- 3:59it's got all the stuff and they need to do the proper restoration
- 4:01of cars of that magnitude.
- 4:03Basically, though it's only three of 'em in essence doing it.
- 4:05And actually only two of 'em really are actually doing any of the work.
- 4:08Yeah.
- 4:08Brian Kind is almost, I would say retired, but basically retired.
- 4:10Just runs the shop.
- 4:11He's got a married couple, which one of the individuals, that'd be
- 4:15an interesting conversation to have.
- 4:16That's an episode unto itself.
- 4:18Yeah.
- 4:18Yeah, because like, wait, what?
- 4:19Wait.
- 4:20Oh, okay.
- 4:21But her metalworking is just unbelievable.
- 4:24Especially that wanderer and redoing all that pieces that are missing
- 4:28from that car and all that stuff that was in the back was super cool.
- 4:31Yeah.
- 4:32But you wanna talk about a small world, Tanya.
- 4:34We walk into this place and Brian walks out, older gentleman, these big glasses,
- 4:38and he's wearing a T-shirt and it's a blue t-shirt and all it says is Mirage.
- 4:42I just have this smile on my face, do the, you know, the whole
- 4:45Kojack point my finger like a gun.
- 4:47And I'm like, man, you're wearing the right T-shirt.
- 4:49He said, well, what do you mean?
- 4:50And I said, I just interviewed Harley k Clarkson like a week ago.
- 4:53And he goes, you won't believe it.
- 4:55I used to work for Harley.
- 4:56And so suddenly this whole conversation, he worked at Mirage, all these cars
- 5:01and how Harley got started and this and that, and so we got a really interesting
- 5:05backstory, which led us into the legend of Lamborghini and Bob Wallace.
- 5:10And brought us back to camaraderie and the Corvette and it was like, who is this guy?
- 5:14What have we stumbled into?
- 5:16We're in the nexus now.
- 5:17Right.
- 5:17You know, I, I, all those conversations were great because one, Eric was
- 5:21conversing with all these great stories and people he talked to and then he went
- 5:24into his stories and it just kind of kept going because when he would bring
- 5:27something up, it basically just got, oh yeah, I interviewed or I talk, you
- 5:31know, so it all just kind of, all of a sudden little web we weave, so to speak.
- 5:35And he really opened up.
- 5:36'cause he's the kind of guy that throughout his years, you can
- 5:39tell he's been like all these awesome places involved stuff.
- 5:41But you know, he's the guy just kind of quiet, kept to himself, just
- 5:43did his work and stuff like that.
- 5:44But he was involved in all this stuff.
- 5:46So he, he has all the connections.
- 5:48So we're getting ready to leave.
- 5:49We're outside.
- 5:50I know he had mentioned before over at Sonoma at the racetrack, they had another
- 5:54storage facility and the gentleman with Mark Addison, God bless him 'cause he's
- 5:58the one that got this all set up for us.
- 6:00Brian goes, well, hey, here, you guys wanna go?
- 6:02Here's the key.
- 6:03I mean, I'm like, I just look just like WTFI don't know you from Adam.
- 6:07I met you an hour ago, right?
- 6:08Yeah, exactly.
- 6:09Well here's the key, you know, go.
- 6:11Yeah, just go over there and this unit, da da da.
- 6:13'cause that was a whole nother thing, trying to find the unit
- 6:15once we got there and we look like Keystone cops running around.
- 6:19Yeah.
- 6:19Trying to find the shop.
- 6:21It was so bad.
- 6:22They had on track stuff going on too.
- 6:24So getting in, you had to do all this stuff.
- 6:25Well, mark just pulls right past the gate.
- 6:28These guys are, him and John, they're in the rental car we had and they
- 6:32get stopped for like 20 minutes, get debriefed like by the Gestapo
- 6:35or something, trying to get in.
- 6:36We just blew right through 'em and just went, and I'm like, all right.
- 6:39And trying to find the unit.
- 6:40'cause the way it was explained to us and oh, it's this one.
- 6:42It's, I mean, just made no sense.
- 6:43But we're like, it's gotta be this one.
- 6:45Try the key.
- 6:46Try the key.
- 6:47It opens the door.
- 6:48You open the door and what do you find?
- 6:49Another slice of heaven.
- 6:51Oh my God.
- 6:51And we got free roam.
- 6:53I mean, just free run of it.
- 6:54It was me.
- 6:55Eric, John and Mark and whatever was living in that wall.
- 6:59'cause there was something and was in that wall.
- 7:00Yeah, there was something else overseeing, I think keeping an eye on everything.
- 7:03'cause I mean it would make itself known every now and then you kinda just
- 7:06like, all right it it is what it is.
- 7:08Oh god.
- 7:08Oh, the cars let, let me list off some of the cars.
- 7:11Yes.
- 7:11As soon as you walked in, there's two shadow formula one cars.
- 7:15When was the last time you saw a shadow in picture, let alone in person.
- 7:19So you got those two right up front and then you walk in and there was
- 7:23that Ferrari 1 66 under the covers.
- 7:25Yeah.
- 7:26Then there was that Aston Martin bandage.
- 7:28That Chevron, which looks like a McLaren P four, whatever it is.
- 7:32Behind that was not just any McLaren formula one car, James Hunt's, McLaren
- 7:37Formula one car up on the rack.
- 7:40And then there was a bunch of other stuff.
- 7:41And the car that got me when we got to the back corner of the shop, you know
- 7:45we had been talking to Brian about the camaraderie, Corvette and Bob Wallace and
- 7:48all this stuff, and sitting there in its original livery, fully restored, whatever
- 7:53is the camaraderie, bird Cage, Maserati, that was at LAMA with the Corvette.
- 7:57And I'm like.
- 7:58You gotta be kidding me.
- 7:59Like what?
- 8:00Just the sheer chance of being in the presence of, you know, all
- 8:03these cars and all this stuff.
- 8:05Absolutely incredible.
- 8:06I mean, scene one, if we walked into that shop and one of those would've been in
- 8:09there, it would've been God is great.
- 8:10Yeah.
- 8:11But just the magnitude of everything that was in there was just.
- 8:14Insane.
- 8:14I still argue I would've taken that alpine home with me.
- 8:17That was like perfect.
- 8:18Yeah, that was a great little car.
- 8:20And that thing was ready to go.
- 8:21That thing was sweet.
- 8:22You know, not only just the cars though, 'cause then you start looking
- 8:24at all the stuff that's kind of laying around and stacked up or whatever.
- 8:27Oh yeah.
- 8:27Because it's just shop parts everywhere.
- 8:28Yeah.
- 8:29It's not like it's some place you're going into where they're on
- 8:31display and it's like, no, these are cars are running on the track.
- 8:33And so they got just all this stuff stacked up everywhere and
- 8:36posters on the wall that are.
- 8:38Probably not very appropriate.
- 8:39You know, in this day and age in the eighties they were okay.
- 8:42In the eighties they were great, but not this day and age.
- 8:44Like, no, I might not wanna this.
- 8:46But I mean, just seeing the old trinkets and stuff was unbelievable too.
- 8:49'cause it's just like stuff you collect over the years, God, this
- 8:52is from this and you know, and you, it's not like it's repo.
- 8:54I miss the legit stuff.
- 8:55It's original.
- 8:55Yeah.
- 8:56And plus, you know, the cars on the track in the background, so you got
- 8:58this whole little vibe going on.
- 9:00Yeah, that was crazy.
- 9:01We've been blessed how we've started our trips from that one to the next one, to
- 9:05the next one, all just kind of steamroll.
- 9:07It's like, man, the a precedent was set right out of the gate.
- 9:10You're like, wow.
- 9:11And we do have to apologize to Sonoma Raceway.
- 9:13You will sign the waiver the next time you come through there.
- 9:16Yes, yes.
- 9:17My apologies.
- 9:18My bad.
- 9:18Didn't know.
- 9:19And I hope we weren't supposed to do anything when we left either.
- 9:21'cause he just went right through on the way out too.
- 9:23Mark's like, what, what?
- 9:25And then we spent some time with John Summers, the motoring historian,
- 9:28and we got to see his motorcycle collection, which is extensive.
- 9:31Yeah.
- 9:31He's got a problem.
- 9:34And he keeps acquiring more.
- 9:36And then it was like, how many cars does he have?
- 9:38Like, I can't believe he fits that Pontiac down there.
- 9:40I don't either.
- 9:41With everything.
- 9:41It's like, holy smokes.
- 9:43Yeah.
- 9:43I, I have no idea.
- 9:44I mean, I'm amazed he doesn't have a shed out in his backyard with more stuff in it.
- 9:47I, that's probably coming, but, well, he's got his other cars in
- 9:49the warehouse, so of course it's not like he's buying these beat up junk.
- 9:52He's buying bikes, getting a great deal on him that either needing just maybe
- 9:56a little TLC or, you know, they're a little scratched here or there.
- 9:59But they all run.
- 10:00He rides 'em all.
- 10:01And you know, he has his little post-it note on it.
- 10:03Last time it was starting, I mean everything.
- 10:04But I mean, I'm a big bike nuts.
- 10:06What he had in there was just, I mean, GS six R at the Ninja
- 10:09ZX six is all this stuff.
- 10:10Crazy, crazy stuff.
- 10:11Just all crammed in there.
- 10:12And I, I will say this, when you see John's videos of where he is sitting,
- 10:17it gives it a whole new context of his little hovel that he has where
- 10:19he is sitting a hundred percent.
- 10:20Changes your perspective completely.
- 10:23You, you're like, please turn the camera around so I can see all the bikes.
- 10:27There with you in that he just sit the other way and he says on his
- 10:30show all the time, he's like, oh, I got all these bikes I gotta fix, you
- 10:34know, blah, blah, blah in the garage.
- 10:35And I'm like, they're three feet from you, dude.
- 10:37They're like right behind you.
- 10:38It's crazy.
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:39It's like just goes like this and touching 'em all.
- 10:41Yeah.
- 10:41He needs to spin it around because then not to mention all the stuff he's
- 10:44got on the one wall, which the ta, I mean he just needs to do an episode.
- 10:47Just touring that thing, just like everything else we've talked about.
- 10:49Like Don talks about on garage tile, you drive past some of these houses,
- 10:53you have no idea what's inside them, what people have been hoarding or
- 10:57storing or collecting or otherwise.
- 10:59And like his neighbor, which leads us into the concord.
- 11:01Yeah.
- 11:02As we were point, what was it, 7:00 AM seven 30?
- 11:04Yeah.
- 11:04On the day we were going out to see this garage and stuff like that, we
- 11:07catched a gentleman's garage was open and he had his two, three oh eights
- 11:12sitting there and we're like, oh.
- 11:13So we stopped as we get outta the car, walk towards the garage, the
- 11:16garage cut and I'm like, oh, maybe he thought we were gonna go rob
- 11:19him, but it turns out awesome guy.
- 11:20It's John's dear friend.
- 11:21John's actually driven his cars and stuff like that.
- 11:23We met him following day at the Concor and had lengthy chats.
- 11:27Him, great guy.
- 11:28Lots of photos and stuff like that.
- 11:29It's interesting to the point, especially in San Francisco, 'cause I mean, yeah, you
- 11:32got basically a single car garage door.
- 11:35I mean if you got a double wide garage, you're living large.
- 11:37I mean, 'cause they're deep.
- 11:38They're all like two car lengths deep at a minimum.
- 11:41Two cars as in like a 57 Thunderbird, two cars deep.
- 11:45They're huge.
- 11:46Like you put three modern cars in those garages easily.
- 11:49Exactly.
- 11:49I mean, he's got his four door Catalina, his Mustang 2002 Mustang
- 11:53bullet, one of the first series of bullets, and then 20 motorcycles.
- 11:56If not more.
- 11:57They're deep.
- 11:58I mean, you're fitting a lot of stuff in there and it's just basically
- 12:00garage space unless you redid it.
- 12:01But yeah, they're huge.
- 12:02It's very surprising, you know?
- 12:03And then obviously on the hills and stuff like that.
- 12:05So yes, it started out that first day set precedent and was like, fantastic.
- 12:09Now we gotta talk about concor and the silly hats.
- 12:12Exactly the weather, you know, it was wasn't too bad.
- 12:15But that's a concern.
- 12:16'cause not only you gotta wear the hat, you gotta wear the blue blazer.
- 12:19Oh my god.
- 12:19White collared shirt and khaki pants.
- 12:22Poor Eric had to go to, I don't Did you go to Kohl's?
- 12:24I bought everything.
- 12:25I bought everything.
- 12:26I had none of it.
- 12:27But didn't you know the wardrobe before?
- 12:29You didn't bring the proper stuff or you did and it was wrong?
- 12:32No, no, no.
- 12:33It was correct and I had to buy it ahead of time so we knew what the
- 12:36dress code was gonna be, but it's worse when you put it all on my stuff.
- 12:39Still had the tags on it.
- 12:40Like if we don't go through with this, I could return it.
- 12:43That's where I was even the morning of.
- 12:45I was like, oh shit, I still got a tag on my, you know, my jacket kind of thing.
- 12:48Those of you who listen or watch the channels and stuff like that?
- 12:51No, I have an issue and a addiction to Diet Mountain Deuce.
- 12:54Oh my god, that was so funny.
- 12:567:00 AM I found a Walmart.
- 12:58No, I'm sorry, target.
- 12:59That was about 10 minutes from the hotel I went.
- 13:01I bought a cooler so that way I could take my own beverages
- 13:04and I bought Diet Mountain.
- 13:05Did it?
- 13:05'cause you know I have a very serious problem.
- 13:07It got worse when we got to France, but we'll get to that point.
- 13:10Yeah, that was hor.
- 13:12Wow.
- 13:12Yeah, we'll get to that.
- 13:13I was all right for two days 'cause I kind of strung some things out.
- 13:17These Jones in after that.
- 13:18Yeah.
- 13:19So anyway, we get to the Concord.
- 13:21I didn't know what to expect.
- 13:22I don't think you knew what to expect.
- 13:23No, I have no idea.
- 13:24The only thing we had gotten, and it was literally the night before,
- 13:27was this 200 car spreadsheet that we needed to somehow digest, memorize,
- 13:32understand what was on the field, and then link these random abbreviations
- 13:37to the groups and try to figure out where the cars were on the field.
- 13:40And then I get there and I'm like, well the field's not that big because
- 13:43he made it sound like it's gonna take an hour and a half to get to one
- 13:46end of the field and then you're not gonna be able to cover the other half.
- 13:49And like all this, I was like, what?
- 13:50The way it was presented, it was very daunting and it was like, oh crap.
- 13:53Because then you get nervous.
- 13:54'cause the position you're being put into.
- 13:56Yeah.
- 13:56And how people are perceiving you.
- 13:58You don't wanna look like an idiot.
- 14:00But also to John.
- 14:01And you know, the concourse individuals themselves have put on the event
- 14:05because they put the trust in John to John, find the people and da da da.
- 14:08So we come up.
- 14:08So it's like, you know, it's a big responsibility.
- 14:10But then to your point, we get there and it's okay.
- 14:13This is very manageable, you know?
- 14:15Which is great.
- 14:15'cause that was the one thing about it.
- 14:16It wasn't like they had 500 cars or something like that, you know?
- 14:19Yeah.
- 14:19You could technically stopping to look at some and this and that.
- 14:22Probably 45 minutes, an hour if you're really kind of stopping some
- 14:25of the cars and scrutinize them.
- 14:26It wasn't that overwhelming once we kind of got the lay of the land.
- 14:29Well, your slice of the cake was a lot easier than mine too, because Yes, it
- 14:33was all the Ferraris were together.
- 14:36Yeah.
- 14:36That made it, I was, yeah, that did make it very, very simple.
- 14:39They were all just in this one spot.
- 14:40Perfect.
- 14:41And basically almost in chronological order too, which was great.
- 14:45I was like, which manic?
- 14:46A DD person put all the German cars where they did, they were all over the place.
- 14:50I was like, it felt like a bee buzzing around trying to like weave a story.
- 14:54And so you and I strategized quite a bit on how we wanted
- 14:57approach the field, but in the end.
- 14:59What was it?
- 14:59We had a couple financial groups, US Bank, there were a bunch of different
- 15:03groups that had gone out and these tours and all this kinda stuff.
- 15:06So one of the docents took the US Bank guys and kind of went
- 15:09off with them by themselves.
- 15:11And then we were with John.
- 15:12I never saw this side of John before.
- 15:14I mean, he doesn't like it when we call him the professor, but I called
- 15:17him the professor in an affectionate way, like Gilligan's Island.
- 15:20Right.
- 15:21As a side note, in regards to.
- 15:24Mr. Professor, we kinda were told that he, we wished that we wouldn't
- 15:28call him that or put that out there anymore due to some circumstances.
- 15:32So, yeah.
- 15:32Yeah.
- 15:33We only can do that in private, I guess, from now on.
- 15:36So we're gonna continue to say it throughout this episode, right?
- 15:38Yeah.
- 15:38We're gonna continue to say it.
- 15:39So to drive it home because you a request was made, but we're like, sure.
- 15:44That's like the worst thing to do is to ask that.
- 15:47'cause then you're just gonna double down.
- 15:48Right?
- 15:48Right.
- 15:50So he starts lecturing and he starts with like these cheaty chitty bang, bang, open
- 15:55top cars from like the 1920s and stuff.
- 15:57And I'm like, okay, where is this going?
- 15:58And then eventually he's like, all right, Eric, William, you take over.
- 16:02And we're like, uh, excuse me.
- 16:04Yeah.
- 16:05Again then.
- 16:05And he wandered off too.
- 16:07Yeah.
- 16:07Stayed there and kinda like oversaw him.
- 16:09Just be sure you know.
- 16:10Nope, I gotta go like, all right.
- 16:12Thank God we were together and we tag teamed it.
- 16:15Yeah, I think that was very helpful.
- 16:17Instead of just getting thrown into the very deep end, that helped a lot
- 16:19too, because then he played off each other and as you're talking, someone
- 16:23can fill in a gap or what have you.
- 16:24So that, that worked out very well.
- 16:26'cause the other fact was the group we were taking around showing cars, you know,
- 16:29they're not car, I mean they like cars.
- 16:31A couple guys had a Porsche snap, but it's not like they're hardcore, right?
- 16:34Like us.
- 16:35But it was interesting, you know, you pick up on the cues of things that are gonna
- 16:39interest them 'cause you wanna keep 'em, uh, attention, captivate 'em and get 'em.
- 16:42So it's kinda like you had to see what perked people up and stuff like that.
- 16:45And being money and stuff like that.
- 16:47I started touching on about avoiding taxes and Montana license
- 16:50plates and all this kind of stuff.
- 16:51And you went into this whole investment thing and I was
- 16:53like, that gives me a break.
- 16:55I can collect my thought.
- 16:57They seem to kind of grasp bond of that.
- 16:59I'm like, I thought you guys'd be something they'd be interested in.
- 17:01Well, and they were, they were into the super fun facts.
- 17:03Right.
- 17:03And I think, yeah, we started off well talking about, you know,
- 17:06Porsche and 20% of the market for Porsche comes from California.
- 17:09Everybody's like, Ooh, ah, that's really cool.
- 17:11And then, you know, we led into other things, you know, and there
- 17:13was a lot we talked, 'cause I think we had them for 45 minutes maybe
- 17:16to an hour, just to ourselves.
- 17:18It was nice to know that by the end, granted they're there.
- 17:21It's part of like a corporate outing for this investment group.
- 17:24And you know, somebody paid for their lunch and all the thing, you
- 17:27know, to kind of wine and dine them.
- 17:28But we didn't lose anybody.
- 17:30No.
- 17:30When we got to the end.
- 17:31And I think that's a indication that we did an okay job.
- 17:34No, I agree.
- 17:35No one wandered off the herd, didn't thin out or anything like that.
- 17:38And I think that's a, hey that we're, I guess we're doing it right I guess, you
- 17:42know, so I like the whole docent thing.
- 17:44I think it's cool.
- 17:45Would I do it again?
- 17:46Yes.
- 17:46Obviously this is the thing that leads to the next thing.
- 17:49So we'll see when we get the call to go do pebble and all that.
- 17:52This was all part of building up to that.
- 17:54So your takeaway from being a concourse docent and, and I know your
- 17:58feelings on being a concourse judge 'cause you did an entire episode
- 18:01about that leading up to this event.
- 18:04I mean, no, I'd love to be a docent again.
- 18:05I mean, 'cause this weight's not getting put on you in regards to objectifying
- 18:08something and putting points to it.
- 18:10I would do it again, a heartbeat.
- 18:11And I thought that the idea presented was like, hey.
- 18:15Go to Pebble this year and shadow some people and stuff like that.
- 18:18I thought that was a great way to go about doing it.
- 18:20Then next year in 2026, then hey, you step in.
- 18:23Yeah.
- 18:24Instead of just like, okay, 2026, you step in.
- 18:26Okay, here you go.
- 18:27You've done a few more events or something like that.
- 18:29And I don't know if, hey, maybe we gotta do a few more.
- 18:31I don't know.
- 18:31But if we get asked, I mean, I'd do it in a second to be another docent
- 18:35again, because I thought that was great.
- 18:36Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:37You know, you get in for free, which is great, but hey, you know, you meet
- 18:39some nice people and stuff like that, you know, and it was a lot of fun.
- 18:42Definitely.
- 18:43It was a lot of fun.
- 18:44So big thank you to John for inviting us.
- 18:46Yes.
- 18:46And making us part of that.
- 18:47So yeah, for sure.
- 18:48Yeah.
- 18:48A huge thank Before we transition away from California and talk about Europe.
- 18:52Gotta talk about our rental car for just a second.
- 18:54So fast.
- 18:55So fast.
- 18:56We were chatting about this thing on Discord the other day and you know, new
- 19:01Volkswagens and all this kinda stuff.
- 19:02So you, you ended up with a 2025 Jetta with a 1.5 turbo slush box automatic.
- 19:07Oh.
- 19:07If you remember on the, I think it was the trip back or two Sonoma John
- 19:12started without sort of starting.
- 19:14He got under my.
- 19:15Skin because he's talking about how nice it is, and I'm like, you obviously have
- 19:19not owned Volkswagens in your lifetime because this is, oh, I got on my soapbox
- 19:24and I was going off about, oh, how much I disliked it, and then I got a chance
- 19:28to drive it, disliked it even more.
- 19:30And you sat there quietly, sort of just smiling and not saying anything.
- 19:33So I wanted to get your final opinion on our Jetta rental car
- 19:36because we're gonna talk about rental cars more as we go along.
- 19:39You think to yourself, God, this is probably the worst rental
- 19:42car there is on the planet.
- 19:43But then you get to Europe into the 2008,
- 19:49it gets beat.
- 19:50You're like, holy crap.
- 19:52It is possible to find something that's even a bigger pile of shit.
- 19:57To say that that Jetta was gutless is a compliment to that car.
- 20:01Oh my god.
- 20:01It was bad.
- 20:02Yeah.
- 20:02If you're a 16-year-old girl getting her first car, it's perfect.
- 20:06The Jetta's always had that reputation, so it's fantastic for that.
- 20:10No offense, Tanya.
- 20:12I don't think that thing had more than 90 horsepower.
- 20:14I don't know.
- 20:14It was, it was awful.
- 20:15And everything was plastic inside.
- 20:17I mean, you can just tell It's a mess.
- 20:19I mean, it's built to be a rental car.
- 20:20Yeah.
- 20:20Now basically that's all it is.
- 20:21Built and sell to all the rental car issues.
- 20:23That's all that thing is for Yeah, you might have one here, two
- 20:26or there on a lot or something.
- 20:27But I mean, I've said it before.
- 20:29I'll say it again.
- 20:30No one aspires to own a rental car.
- 20:33Hands down, right?
- 20:34No.
- 20:35So again, as we wrap out the California part of the trip, I
- 20:39wanna give another shout out to John Summers, the motoring historian.
- 20:42He's got an episode that's gonna air right behind this one, and he too talks about
- 20:46his rental car experience in Cape Cod.
- 20:49And I gotta tell you, editing it, I was laughing my ass off
- 20:53like it was that Seinfeld moment.
- 20:55It's gold, Jerry.
- 20:57It's gold.
- 21:00It's really good.
- 21:01You gotta listen to it and it really goes with the whole
- 21:04theme of the rental car thing.
- 21:05So check out the motoring historian after this airs on Friday,
- 21:18France.
- 21:19Do we start with your flight like you had some bad flights?
- 21:22Oh my God.
- 21:23Yeah.
- 21:23I mean, I was getting screwed by United Left, right and Center.
- 21:26Everything's set.
- 21:27Everything's good.
- 21:29Then get to the airport.
- 21:30Now mind you, I had bought extra leg room, all that stuff and everything
- 21:34because like I'm not gonna spend extra money, but I kept following the prices.
- 21:37I checked every couple days to see what it is, and all of a sudden, bam, it
- 21:41was $950 to upgrade the first class.
- 21:44But I was like, done.
- 21:45So upgrade the first class.
- 21:47I'm like, great.
- 21:47Hey, eight hours I can sleep.
- 21:49Then that way when I get there, hey, we're resting you.
- 21:51Get to the airport flight's.
- 21:53Delayed weather in Dulles.
- 21:55'cause that's where I was supposed to fly in from Cleveland to Dulles.
- 21:56Dulles over, it's delayed like six hours.
- 21:59So it's like, well I ain't making that connection.
- 22:01That ain't happening.
- 22:02I had like a two and a half hour later or so.
- 22:03It was like, okay, making it the flight to Paris.
- 22:06Paris.
- 22:07No, this is not the flight to Paris.
- 22:09Okay, the flight to Paris.
- 22:10You need to go to terminal two.
- 22:13Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Flight 3 0 9.
- 22:15Service to Paris.
- 22:16Paris.
- 22:17So, you know, my phone starts blowing up, trying to get things switched, whatnot.
- 22:20And I'm like going, I don't know what I'm gonna do.
- 22:21And their first choice and response was, well, we can get you out tomorrow.
- 22:25Ah, I can offer upgrade.
- 22:27I upgrade you to the flight tomorrow.
- 22:30I'm like, no.
- 22:31What would you do if you go into Europe and all you lose a whole
- 22:35day and everything like that.
- 22:35Oh, it's just, oh, let's go tomorrow.
- 22:37I go, there's gotta be something better.
- 22:38I'm like, serious.
- 22:39It's like, you know, and they think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
- 22:42Like, oh, we solved this problem, we're the greatest.
- 22:44I'm like, you gotta be kidding me.
- 22:45I'm not the only one.
- 22:46'cause all these other people too are, you know, in the same boat
- 22:49that we're on this flight, we're looking for passenger Marcos.
- 22:55Third for brown hold and iron glance.
- 22:59So then finally after about 45 minutes, I didn't get a phone
- 23:02call or nothing like that.
- 23:03All I get is another text with the thing saying, oh, okay,
- 23:05now you're flying to Chicago.
- 23:06Then Chicago, of course I might get in the person, but then I
- 23:08look at my seat, I'm like, all right, you are in the window seat.
- 23:12Okay, no problem.
- 23:13I changed the middle.
- 23:15It's premium plus I ain't gonna complain.
- 23:17It's still, you got the nice seat, everything like that, but you know it's
- 23:19not your own little cubicle, whatever.
- 23:20So it is a downgrade.
- 23:22Yes.
- 23:22So I get to Chicago, which you fly enough, you get to learn to airports.
- 23:25They have Diet Mountain Dew Hopkins.
- 23:27There's only two of the food places up Soon as you go through
- 23:29TSA that, so you gotta like buy 'em and walk all the way down.
- 23:32But anyways, it's a different story.
- 23:33He builds all his travel around where he can acquire Diet Mountain Dew.
- 23:37Exactly.
- 23:37And it's critical.
- 23:38It's like, I'm gonna do a travel guide on it.
- 23:39They had it, so I you like, I bought a couple, so I'm waiting 'cause
- 23:42it was like two hours, whatever before the flight was going over.
- 23:44So I call United said, Hey, uh, you got me there, which is great.
- 23:47I go, but what are you gonna do about the downgrade?
- 23:51Can you do something right?
- 23:52What are you gonna do?
- 23:53Nothing.
- 23:54And I just gave up.
- 23:55I mean I didn't even bother after I got home to bother with any of that.
- 23:57I'm like, it's just a waste of time.
- 23:58And the best part is, while this is all happening, you're texting
- 24:01with me, I'm talking with David Middleton, I'm talking with David
- 24:04Lowe from the A CO, all this stuff.
- 24:06And my flight had changed 'cause I was supposed to go to Boston and go over.
- 24:09Yeah.
- 24:09And I got redirected to Detroit and then went over and we were trying to
- 24:13figure out when are we gonna land?
- 24:14When are we gonna be there?
- 24:15Oh my God, you're gonna have to wait for me.
- 24:17And then it turned out I was waiting for you and like it was a whole circus and
- 24:21no, almost basically it was a flip flop.
- 24:23'cause it would've been, originally I was gonna get there 40 minutes for
- 24:26you and then now it just flipped.
- 24:27And you got there four minutes for me and I worked out big
- 24:30things just getting over there.
- 24:31But you get nervous 'cause you're like, okay, is this kinda
- 24:33gonna set the tone and whatnot?
- 24:35It's going over there.
- 24:35It's like.
- 24:36You know what got there.
- 24:37It was great.
- 24:38Now, of course, the one thing I will say is my partner for the trip stated
- 24:42that he's at the enterprise, but there's five different hubs and terminals over
- 24:46there at Charles de Golf, and each one has their own rental car thing.
- 24:50So I'm down in this parking garage, wandering around looking for,
- 24:53alright, where the frick is he?
- 24:54And he is like, oh, I'm standing right in front of the thing.
- 24:57I'm like, no you're not.
- 24:57He goes, no, there's only the one.
- 24:59I'm over at two.
- 25:00Like, well I'm in five so I'll be there in a half hour 'cause I gotta take a train.
- 25:04Eventually found him.
- 25:05It only took an hour.
- 25:07I mean, you know, and walking forever, five miles I think it was.
- 25:09I, I was amazed 'cause the last time I went, I went with Dave
- 25:12Middleton, you know, I was texting him and all this kinda stuff.
- 25:15He was on his way back to Germany anyway, and I'm like, Hey,
- 25:18remember, and this and that.
- 25:19And it took him like two hours to get through customs.
- 25:21I blazed through customs in like two minutes.
- 25:24I did too.
- 25:24Yeah.
- 25:25It was amazing.
- 25:26Yeah.
- 25:26So I go to the rental counter and I'm talking to the guy and he's like,
- 25:29wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 25:31Tell him what you thought you were getting.
- 25:32Well that's, that's what I'm getting at, right?
- 25:33So I'm talking to the rental guy.
- 25:35I said, please make sure I'm in France.
- 25:37I would like a French car.
- 25:38The last time I was here I got an Italian car, doesn't make any sense to me.
- 25:41Like I would like to rent a French car.
- 25:43And he's like, oh, not a problem.
- 25:44I already have you booked in one.
- 25:45I have a EO 2 0 8.
- 25:47I said, oh, okay.
- 25:482 0 8. That's awesome.
- 25:49I was like, is it a GTI?
- 25:50And he goes, oh yeah, GT series.
- 25:52Oh cool.
- 25:53'cause I'm thinking Hot hatch 2 0 8, this is gonna be awesome.
- 25:56There's only the two of us.
- 25:57We can go bombing down some B roads with this thing.
- 25:59'cause I think the two eight is really good looking car.
- 26:02GTI sized it's appropriate hot little engine and all this kind of thing.
- 26:06Even if it had a downgraded version of the motor, I still
- 26:09would've been happy with it.
- 26:10So I tell William, I'm all excited.
- 26:11We're getting to 2 0 8, this is gonna be great.
- 26:13This is gonna be fantastic.
- 26:14Hopefully it's not that metallic mustard color that they come in.
- 26:17So they send us not to the normal parking lot that I'm used to
- 26:21where the cars are right there.
- 26:22'cause I kept looking at it.
- 26:23Some really cool stuff in the lot, the brand new Ipson, some Audis, like other
- 26:27stuff was in the, I was like, okay, well I don't see a 2 0 8 anywhere in the lot.
- 26:30I'm like, oh no, no, no, no.
- 26:31You gotta go to the bowels of de gall.
- 26:33Yeah.
- 26:33Three levels down into this parking garage where they hide
- 26:37all the cars under the airport.
- 26:38It's like subterranean, right?
- 26:39And we get down there and it looks like something out of black mirror and we're
- 26:44just walking and walking and walking.
- 26:46And there's just row after tunnel after row after tunnel of just cars and cars
- 26:52And cars are like, where the hell are we?
- 26:54And we finally get, it's like 24 out of 26 or something like that.
- 26:58And we get all the way down, the far end end, we're walking down
- 27:01the aisle and I'm like, I don't see any two oh eights anywhere.
- 27:04The key, when you blink the key, it wouldn't make any noise.
- 27:07So it was like, where is it?
- 27:09So we found this one guy, he was this random guy sitting in a chair.
- 27:12I guess he's the attendant.
- 27:13No booth, no nothing.
- 27:14Just in a chair.
- 27:15Yeah.
- 27:15He's just sitting there in the garage underground all day long.
- 27:18That's what he gets paid to do.
- 27:19And I'm like, I'm looking for this car and I can't find it.
- 27:22So he looks at the little tag and he walks us over and he goes, boop.
- 27:25And he blinks the lights and he goes, this is your car.
- 27:28I'll look at William.
- 27:29And then I run to the back of the car and I'm like, 2008.
- 27:32What is this?
- 27:33I forgot to add a zero.
- 27:34Oh on that little description.
- 27:39It was a manual, which is exactly what I wanted.
- 27:41But here's the deal.
- 27:42And Tanya, you can sympathize.
- 27:44'cause when we get to the Italy part of this, you could
- 27:46talk about your rental car.
- 27:472008 is the size of a Tiguan.
- 27:49The older Tiguan, about that size.
- 27:51C-U-V-S-U-V, whatever.
- 27:53Do you know the specs of a 2008 peo?
- 27:56How many cylinders?
- 27:57How many hears pers on a scale of dog?
- 28:00Shit.
- 28:00Slow to Pretty much.
- 28:02Yes.
- 28:03Yeah, it's a turbo.
- 28:05I'll give you that.
- 28:05It is a turbo.
- 28:06It's a, it's an odd number of cylinders.
- 28:08We'll tell you that.
- 28:09Is it really a three cylinder Yes.
- 28:10Three cylinder of turbo?
- 28:11Yes.
- 28:14How many Hearst pers 115.
- 28:17115. That's generous.
- 28:18Oh man, that Jetta made 115 horsepower.
- 28:22You kidding me?
- 28:22We looked it up.
- 28:23I don't remember what the torque numbers were.
- 28:25'cause it did feel torque.
- 28:26Year 75 horsepower for something that weighs 3,200 pounds with two adult.
- 28:32And their luggage in it.
- 28:33So you can imagine how fast it was.
- 28:35Well, he thought it was a diesel.
- 28:36When we were leaving.
- 28:37It sounded like a diesel.
- 28:39I was like, oh, they gave us a diesel.
- 28:40We're screwed.
- 28:41So I would've scorched it off the line in my 40-year-old.
- 28:47Yes, a thousand percent Audi.
- 28:49A thousand percent.
- 28:51It did have that diesel sound to it.
- 28:53It hummed kinda like a motorcycle at high RPM.
- 28:55It revved up pretty quick.
- 28:57It just didn't do anything when it revved up.
- 28:59No.
- 29:00So it didn't, it got horrible fuel economy too.
- 29:03We're gonna talk about that.
- 29:04Yeah.
- 29:04So no, the fuel economy was amazing actually.
- 29:07Just enough.
- 29:08Just enough.
- 29:09Just enough.
- 29:10So it was toy, I think what saved it was the gearing was so tight
- 29:14and so short that it must have been like a four 11 final drive because
- 29:18it would spin up pretty quick.
- 29:20That's all it was, saving that car.
- 29:21'cause otherwise it wouldn't get out of its own way.
- 29:24So it took us an hour and a half to get out of Paris.
- 29:27Yeah.
- 29:27But yeah, you have to cut through it.
- 29:28So it took forever.
- 29:30And then the two and a half hours to Lama, three hours after that on the
- 29:33highway to get to the middle of nowhere.
- 29:35Driving through Indiana.
- 29:37That's what he told me.
- 29:38He's like, I flew all the way here to drive through Indiana.
- 29:42That part of France is like flat and just farmland and boring.
- 29:46And if you've driven on Route 70 going east or west in the middle of the
- 29:50country, it's almost exactly the same.
- 29:51It's like, all right, whatever.
- 29:52So we show up finally in downtown Lamont.
- 29:56I had never been there because the last time I went I stayed at the track.
- 29:59So that's what we did.
- 29:59So we're in downtown Lamont and I turned to you and I go, so we drove
- 30:03through Indiana to end up in Baltimore.
- 30:04Yeah, because that's what it looks like, the trams and everything.
- 30:07Oh yeah.
- 30:08All of it.
- 30:08Turns out Williams like, oh, my Airbnb is across the street from you.
- 30:12Well, across the street was under a bridge.
- 30:14Through a tunnel, but realistically, on the other side, on the other side of the
- 30:17block, I was directly out the front door of the downtown Lamont train station.
- 30:22So that was like right there.
- 30:23And we're like, oh, okay.
- 30:24This is cool.
- 30:25And it wasn't far from the track.
- 30:26It was what, three, four miles?
- 30:28Yeah, it wasn't that far.
- 30:29I mean, a little traffic in there, but yeah.
- 30:30Well, it depends on which route we went that day.
- 30:32That was just it.
- 30:33So the GPS never took us the same way twice.
- 30:36No.
- 30:36And it would take like a half an hour to go three miles.
- 30:39It was absolutely insane that one time we came back, we went down these roads.
- 30:44Where it's like, if you've seen those episodes of Top Gear where they're in
- 30:47Italy and they're trying to fit the car between the walls, it was really tight.
- 30:52Cars just parked as tight as they could be.
- 30:53And I'm like, are these one way streets?
- 30:55What if a car comes the other way?
- 30:57I mean, it was nuts.
- 30:58It wasn't as stressful as it is to drive in Paris, but it was really
- 31:00just kind of a obnoxious, the way Lama is laid out, it's very industrial,
- 31:05it's very tight, it's very old.
- 31:07It's cute, I guess you could say.
- 31:08Yeah, it's a lot of one way stuff.
- 31:09'cause of those trams, that's what kinda screwed everything up.
- 31:12'cause all of a sudden it'll be one way.
- 31:13So you gotta go through these little enclaves or whatever and that's the route.
- 31:17And they love a traffic circle.
- 31:18Geez, we But your hotel was remodeled, which was nice.
- 31:23I had a fiat in the lobby.
- 31:24It was awesome.
- 31:24Closet you had was a little tiny.
- 31:26Oh my God.
- 31:27Oh yeah.
- 31:28I had initially booked the room thinking David Middleton was coming with us.
- 31:32And I booked a room with two beds.
- 31:34And the pictures, everything looks bigger 'cause he's a fish eye lens and whatever.
- 31:37William comes, I checked out his Airbnb, which was super nice.
- 31:40He had a ton of space.
- 31:41I go up to my room, which was the coldest place in all of Europe.
- 31:44Yeah.
- 31:45Below zero all the time in that room.
- 31:46It was ridiculous.
- 31:47But I walk in and I'm like, oh my God.
- 31:49And he just looks at me, starts laughing.
- 31:51It's not two king beds or two queen beds.
- 31:54No, no.
- 31:54Two twins that are basically next to each other.
- 31:57And I'm like, oh my God.
- 31:59That would've been hilarious if Middleton did end up coming because
- 32:01you, I'm like, oh Lord, one of you would've been sleeping on my couch.
- 32:04He wouldn't have cared.
- 32:05He'll tell you the story.
- 32:06We shared a room in fer.
- 32:07But we'll leave that where it is.
- 32:09Yeah.
- 32:09But my r and b was nice.
- 32:10I had one bedroom.
- 32:11I mean it was ground for full kid.
- 32:13I mean it was nice to had this courtyard.
- 32:15The young couple above me, the kid worked at uh, he's A BMW salesman,
- 32:19the dealership there and they just adopted this cute little spaniel
- 32:23puppy and Oh yeah, it was great.
- 32:25He was having a good old time.
- 32:26Oh yeah.
- 32:27Meanwhile, the first day there was nothing going on at the track.
- 32:30So we went to the museum and figured, knock that out, get that outta the
- 32:33way, go to the official boutique, which is the official merchandise
- 32:37store and all that kinda stuff.
- 32:38So William, your impressions on the museum seeing it now, outside of the
- 32:41pictures that I had showed you when I went the first time, it's very car centric.
- 32:44You can see where they're getting to.
- 32:46But I mean, no, you go to some places, the settings all there, they really sell
- 32:49it on the ambiance, stuff like that.
- 32:51And obviously, you know, they're doing a huge expansion.
- 32:54Probably two years it'd be done, but it'd be cool to see what
- 32:56they end up finishing with.
- 32:57It's great because it's about the cars, it's about to race, stuff like that.
- 33:00And again, it's not some massive thing where you can get lost in it and it's
- 33:04like, well why do they have this here?
- 33:05You know, it's Lamont Cars.
- 33:06Cars that race at Lamont.
- 33:08It was a great way to start the trip for sure.
- 33:09Membership has the privileges, an A CO. So if you ever go, be sure you are an A
- 33:14CO member 'cause you get 'em for free.
- 33:15Yeah, that was awesome.
- 33:16And the other thing I love about that museum is.
- 33:18It's in chronological order.
- 33:20Yes.
- 33:20So you start with the earliest cars and you wind up with the newest winners and
- 33:24then they had their McLaren display and then they expanded and added the 24 hours
- 33:28of Motos display, which is pretty cool.
- 33:30I'm hoping when they expand the museum in the next couple of years, maybe they'll
- 33:33have some of the big trucks in there and some of the other stuff that they run.
- 33:36That would be really, really cool to see.
- 33:38You know, I didn't ask and I don't know if you had seen it but you know, 'cause
- 33:41you go to some of those ones kind of like when you go to an art museum, you
- 33:43get the headphones and you're like, you just do your own walking tour.
- 33:45I dunno if they had that, that'd be kind of cool if they did that.
- 33:48Yeah.
- 33:48But it was awesome to start from the beginning and you get all the way to
- 33:52wasn't last year's winning car was two years ago winning car, wasn't it?
- 33:56Still all dirtied up, everything like that, which is cool like how they kinda
- 33:58do for Daytona and stuff like that here.
- 34:00But it's really neat 'cause you can just see how things progress
- 34:03and were, and how things changed technologically, everything like that.
- 34:06And how went from street cars to full on race cars, kind of back to
- 34:10street cars, back to full on race car.
- 34:12I mean.
- 34:12So it's really neat to see that progressive and seeing the jump in
- 34:15certain areas where you can see like what it was like a huge jump in regards
- 34:18to aerodynamics and just the engineering thought that went into going something
- 34:22a totally different route in regards to just following the same old shit.
- 34:26It's really great.
- 34:26I mean it's definitely something you need to go see when you're there
- 34:29and it's right at the front gate.
- 34:30You can't miss it right at the front.
- 34:31Yeah, it's right there.
- 34:33Did we go shopping after that or was that the next.
- 34:35Yeah, no, we went in because, yeah, 'cause we were looking at
- 34:37buying, I bought some books and I bought the remote control 4 9 9.
- 34:40Yeah, yeah.
- 34:41Got it.
- 34:41And the guy was there at the classic autograph and I was like, oh crap, I
- 34:45could've brought it, had him sign 'em.
- 34:46But he does those really cool comic book type storybook that were really, yeah.
- 34:50And they're cheat.
- 34:50There's only like 10, 12 bucks thing know, it was like I bought a couple of
- 34:53them again is that scenario you can kind of go through and you could spend a crap
- 34:57load of money if you really wanted to.
- 34:58But then you get into, which we kind of had this discussion is we'll get into the
- 35:02third day or second day we were at the track to, okay now space in my suitcase.
- 35:06Yeah, we mentioned at the museum too, it's like, well let's see
- 35:08if maybe it's somewhere else you can find a better price on it.
- 35:10If not, you can come back in the museum and buy it.
- 35:13But you know, I had a lot of cool stuff.
- 35:14I mean I could have went to town buying a lot of the books they had there.
- 35:17I bought the one.
- 35:17But like, just historical, everything like that.
- 35:19I mean just fantastic stuff there.
- 35:21It's nice 'cause it's, again, you can actually put your
- 35:23hands on everything like that.
- 35:24Yeah.
- 35:24So, but it's always gotta keep in mind if European sizes.
- 35:27To American sites.
- 35:28Oh boy.
- 35:28Because that is the dilemma you can run into.
- 35:30That can be a big problem.
- 35:32So day two, a Lama classic, the track is still not hot, they're still
- 35:36teching, they're getting cars ready.
- 35:38So we end up doing some shopping at all the different pagodas
- 35:41that are there in the villages.
- 35:42And then we do the paddock tour.
- 35:43Exactly.
- 35:44And I didn't know this, you know, I'm thinking, oh this is
- 35:46great how they have this set up.
- 35:48No on tracks, just all tech and stuff like that.
- 35:50All the cars are in the paddock.
- 35:51Once you can try and figure out which paddock is which and where they're all at,
- 35:55then you can go walking through 'em all.
- 35:56But then obviously go through all the merchandise day and stuff like that.
- 35:59You can take that time to do it.
- 36:00It's not like you got a day where there's all this on track stuff going on.
- 36:03Like, well I gotta watch what's going on in the track.
- 36:04Well, but I wanna go see this.
- 36:06You know?
- 36:06So yeah, you can spend that time and get the lay of the
- 36:08land and it's awesome to see.
- 36:10I know how they everything set up, but I didn't know previous tions of that.
- 36:13They didn't have that on Thursday.
- 36:14They jumped right in on a Friday and went, oh wow.
- 36:17So you didn't have that opportunity to do it.
- 36:18So I was like, oh this is great.
- 36:19It's just really cool to see.
- 36:20'cause everything's there.
- 36:21You can get right up on the cars.
- 36:23A couple of 'em here and there had kind of roped off and so they should have, because
- 36:27they were rather expensive vehicles.
- 36:28But 99% of 'em just walk right along the side, go talk to the
- 36:32crews, everything like that.
- 36:33So you can really get.
- 36:35Into it and looking at what they were doing and what the car was.
- 36:37And that was really cool.
- 36:38And they had some very unique cars there too.
- 36:40Yeah, that was awesome.
- 36:42You know, I mean it's, 'cause you, you had that access to get right up on 'em.
- 36:45I mean it was, it was awesome.
- 36:47Well, we never made it to the group C Paddock because they
- 36:49must have put it at the airport.
- 36:50It was so far away.
- 36:51Yeah.
- 36:51From everything.
- 36:52Yeah, exactly.
- 36:53They kept those cars hidden, but they were blocked off by eras.
- 36:57So you'd go into, you know, 1923, which is the beginning
- 37:01of Lama, to like, I think 1933.
- 37:03And then the next one was like 34 to whatever.
- 37:05And then there was like all the heyday of the Ferrari were all together and
- 37:08then, you know, the hoopla, the sixties with the GT forties and all that stuff.
- 37:12So they had all these like corrals just for the paddocks and you would
- 37:15move from one era to the next, which I thought was really, really cool.
- 37:18And then the legends of lama, those were up in a big pavilion, really
- 37:22pretty with the restaurants around it.
- 37:24That's where like all the main stationary shops are and everything.
- 37:27Yeah.
- 37:27So that was really cool.
- 37:28And then you had car clubs?
- 37:29Like everywhere.
- 37:30Oh, everywhere.
- 37:31Oh my goodness.
- 37:32You know, obviously it's a big place, the whole track itself.
- 37:35'cause they weren't using the Bugatti circuit, so that's where they had a
- 37:38lot of these clubs and yeah, it was one of those deals where every day
- 37:40we all of a sudden figured out there was something new we stumbled on.
- 37:43It was just like, oh geez, I didn't know this was here.
- 37:45You know?
- 37:46'cause you're just kind of going around following stuff, trying to figure out.
- 37:48And that was neat too 'cause you always find something new but it just,
- 37:51the car clubs itself are awesome.
- 37:53Well I read there was 8,000 cars on display, everything under the sun.
- 37:57You saw how big that place is.
- 37:59It didn't feel like it, but there were cars everywhere on display in groupings.
- 38:03What?
- 38:03I mean, again, it was fantastic 'cause it was kinda like get your
- 38:05cars and coffee almost in essence.
- 38:07Well I mean the Shelby Village alone was the size of the normal car shows.
- 38:10Huge.
- 38:11Yeah.
- 38:11And we find, didn't find that till the last day when it was raining too.
- 38:13That was the other thing too.
- 38:14Trying to find John Pierre and, and going there.
- 38:16And we met Mr. Aaron Shelby as well.
- 38:18But yeah, so it's like that alone, I mean, God now kicking ourselves that
- 38:22we didn't find that the day before because they must have had at least a
- 38:25hundred different variations of Shelby.
- 38:27GT 40, GT three.
- 38:29Oh it's insane.
- 38:29Cobras everything.
- 38:30It was just nuts.
- 38:31Well that and the original Shelby car carriers and the trucks.
- 38:34Yeah.
- 38:35And like all, oh, it was nuts.
- 38:36That was really cool to see.
- 38:38But the one thing I will say is I still can't understand why they call
- 38:41the different groupings plateaus.
- 38:42You know, I don't, I don't know why Plateau.
- 38:45And that was what the class they call Plateau two.
- 38:47Plateau One Plateau.
- 38:48What?
- 38:48And so the first day, though, I mean, that opens up a can of worms when you
- 38:51start going shopping because they have anything in everything under the sun that
- 38:55you could want, that you desperately want, that you desperately need in your mind.
- 39:00I need none of it, but I want all of it.
- 39:02Exactly.
- 39:03And it's kinda like the other place you go, a lot of them clustered up.
- 39:06A lot of 'em had the same things, so you kinda like could chop it, but
- 39:0990% of 'em all had different things.
- 39:11You know, you had all your models, stuff like that.
- 39:13But there were different types of models these places and just,
- 39:15I ended up buying some models.
- 39:17Eric's ended up buying some models because it's like, uh, you twisted my arm though
- 39:20and I'm, I am glad it is sitting here.
- 39:22I'll, I'll do a little show and show and tell.
- 39:24I had to buy a backpack to bring this home.
- 39:27This is sick wide body, second generation Audi Quatra coup.
- 39:31This is number 7 99 out of 2,500 that were produced.
- 39:35It was well worth it.
- 39:36Again, I had to buy a backpack.
- 39:37Just to bring it home, but it was priced good too.
- 39:39That was another thing too.
- 39:40It wasn't like it was obscenely priced, 119 Euros, so I paid
- 39:44more for model cars before.
- 39:45It was super cool.
- 39:46Yeah, and clothing wise, that was really cool too because there's a lot of stuff
- 39:49that you don't see over here, and when you go to any races here in the States,
- 39:51you know, you don't see any of this type of stuff that they're selling.
- 39:54You remember that Golf Mirage polo shirt that I bought?
- 39:56Yeah.
- 39:57My wife absolutely loves that.
- 39:58She's like, that was a super good pick.
- 39:59She's like, I really like it.
- 40:01Looks good on you.
- 40:01Nice colors.
- 40:02Yeah.
- 40:02Oh sure.
- 40:02I like the way it's made and that wasn't that expensive.
- 40:05We bought that from one of my favorite vendors.
- 40:07That I found the last time I was there, which is RS selection.
- 40:09They got some really nice stuff at really reasonable prices.
- 40:12If you're going in there to look for something special, you will definitely
- 40:14find something special there.
- 40:16A thousand percent.
- 40:16It's awesome.
- 40:17Great stuff.
- 40:18A tip.
- 40:18If you go take a really big suitcase and only pack it half
- 40:21full a thousand percent because you will leave with a lot of stuff.
- 40:24And again, it's not price bad either, so it's not that you're
- 40:27gonna spend thousands of dollars.
- 40:28The only thing you'll leave with less with is the money you started with.
- 40:31Yeah, exactly.
- 40:31Yeah.
- 40:32Your light wallet's gonna be a little bit lighter.
- 40:33But other than that, so we get to the first day of track time,
- 40:38which is practice and qualifying.
- 40:39Shout out to Ty and to Tebow.
- 40:41Are we allowed to use his real name?
- 40:42I'm not sure some secret squirrel stuff going on there, but shout out to them.
- 40:47I hung out with them when we were at the hundredth Lamont.
- 40:49Great guys.
- 40:50A lot of fun.
- 40:51Very knowledgeable about their area of the car world, especially Porsches
- 40:55and Renos and stuff like that.
- 40:56So we hung out with them for a while and then unfortunately I got called away.
- 40:59I had some a CO obligations that I had to take care of.
- 41:02And then you went off venturing and wandering and filming and
- 41:05being our roving reporter.
- 41:06So that kind of sucked up that whole day.
- 41:09But we gotta talk about some of the VIP experiences that we had.
- 41:12Yeah.
- 41:12Throughout the two days of racing that we got you going off to do what
- 41:15you had to do was very beneficial.
- 41:18For you.
- 41:18What ended up coming about with that?
- 41:20Fantastic.
- 41:21And it needed to happen too, but that was great.
- 41:23But yeah, we kind of stumbled onto some things that were like, it didn't
- 41:28seem like it was gonna be real.
- 41:29Our first thing we ended up in the BMW hospitality boost.
- 41:33Yeah.
- 41:34'cause we had found out, and it was very hush hush.
- 41:36It wasn't like they were shouting out to the world you could do this,
- 41:39that you could purchase a hot lap of the track now just like putting
- 41:42around in a bus with 50 other people.
- 41:44It was out the gate smoking the tires.
- 41:47It was 400 bucks.
- 41:49So you could split it if you want.
- 41:50So two people, I mean, you weren't driving, someone drove you, but
- 41:53it was a racer that drove you.
- 41:54It was in an M three touring.
- 41:55You guys were an M three.
- 41:57Yeah.
- 41:57But it was a hell of a deal and still not, you know, there was us
- 42:00three yourself and Mr. Withers.
- 42:02You go, you guys split it.
- 42:03And then I'm like, I go, I would spend $800 to do this myself.
- 42:06Yeah.
- 42:06Well worth the price of admission to do this.
- 42:09'cause it was unbelievable to be able to do, 'cause one,
- 42:12get the sense of the track.
- 42:13It's not as wise as it looks in TV at all.
- 42:15No at all.
- 42:16You know, and like he's, Eric said these guys, as soon as you
- 42:19got past that pit lane line.
- 42:21Boom.
- 42:21Floored.
- 42:22We're doing a buck 80 down the straightaway.
- 42:24Yeah.
- 42:24Bonkers guys.
- 42:25Were not messing around.
- 42:27I mean, having fun.
- 42:28I just, oh, it was great.
- 42:29But the cool thing was is Bill's, uh, wife Simone joined us that day.
- 42:33We tried to finagle it at first when we first went in to, to do
- 42:36the hot lab, 'cause you had to get your helmet and stuff like that.
- 42:38And the first, they kinda like being a little standoff, well no,
- 42:41she needed to sign it, da da da.
- 42:42It's like, well, it's paid for.
- 42:43So we're like, all right, we gave, it ain't gonna happen.
- 42:45Literally a minute before we're about to go.
- 42:47They're like, well, does she wanna go?
- 42:49Yeah, she wants to go.
- 42:50So she was able to jump in the car with me, which was awesome because she probably
- 42:54has never gone more than 65 miles an hour in her life, even on the highway.
- 42:57So it was hilarious.
- 42:58Listen to her giggle in the backseat when he's clicking off how fast we were going.
- 43:03'cause he's clicking off in kilometers, so he is like 2 80, 2 9, and it's like
- 43:06you're trying to calculate it out.
- 43:07You know, she's just laughing.
- 43:09That is alone.
- 43:10Like I said, that's worth $800 to do it.
- 43:13It gives you such perspective on the track that you cannot get from tv.
- 43:17We argue all the time as armchair quarterbacks going,
- 43:20why aren't they passing there?
- 43:21Just get around them, just go blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 43:23And then you realize it's a two lane road that they're doing 200 miles an hour
- 43:27on no shoulder and it's super narrow.
- 43:30Yeah.
- 43:30There is no room to pass.
- 43:32There's certain places where they've widened it a little bit, but
- 43:34realistically, when you're going down the mo sun, you get tunnel vision because
- 43:38you don't realize on tv, like all the trees, like how close everything is.
- 43:42Yeah.
- 43:42And then the two slowest corners going through, let's say Indian
- 43:46arage combination and then mosan corner, you need anti-gravity
- 43:50breaks to get through there.
- 43:51And then Yeah, it's like turning into somebody's driveway.
- 43:54It's a 90 degree corner.
- 43:56Yeah.
- 43:56And it's super narrow at that pace you're going through there like 40 miles an hour.
- 44:00It's insane.
- 44:00But what was really cool was Indianapolis Corner, and the Porsche
- 44:04curves obviously, but Indianapolis.
- 44:06Is banked.
- 44:07Yes.
- 44:07There's a ton of negative camra there that hooks the car and they come
- 44:11in just screaming with the tires on fire and it's just like, tap the
- 44:15brakes, let the turn, suck 'em in.
- 44:17And then they gotta lose all the speed going into Arage because
- 44:20that's a 90 degree righthander.
- 44:22Yeah.
- 44:23And it's just like, holy crud.
- 44:24But even there in that short stretch from Bolson to Indianapolis,
- 44:29they're back up to full speed again.
- 44:30You know?
- 44:30And then there's that kink.
- 44:31And again, on tv or even in a video game, you don't get the same perspective
- 44:37you do in the car and it becomes suddenly very real and Oh yeah.
- 44:41It's the shortest eight and a half mile lap you've ever done.
- 44:44Like it goes by in the blink of an eye, it's so fast.
- 44:47Oh yeah.
- 44:47But it's justifi because you're getting one lap, so they, they gotta cool down
- 44:51so you don't get a full lap, so you're not blasting through everything and
- 44:54then going back down the front straight.
- 44:56But to your point, that was eight and a half miles.
- 44:58Wow.
- 44:59Granted the cars we were in, yes, they were fast.
- 45:02But from what we are doing, you're probably take another 30 seconds off.
- 45:04Yeah.
- 45:05Wouldn't you think?
- 45:05Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 45:06And when the tires are warm and the cars actually warmed up and the
- 45:09brake, I mean, they just come out of the gate, the cars have been sitting
- 45:11there for hours, fire 'em up and just.
- 45:14Full bore out the door.
- 45:15And I'm like, yeah.
- 45:16Like I told my coach, you'll listen to it on the video that goes along with this.
- 45:19And I'm like, dude, the tires are cold.
- 45:21And he's like, yeah, yeah.
- 45:22And then he just steps on it even more.
- 45:23And I'm like, dude, yeah, let's warm them up.
- 45:26Yeah.
- 45:26And he's like, four wheel drifting outta one of the corners.
- 45:28I'm like, Bravo.
- 45:29We didn't die.
- 45:31Yeah.
- 45:31I mean, they did not hold back one bit.
- 45:33And again, that's what for the whole spirit is you would think
- 45:36in your mind like, okay, they're taking people out on the track.
- 45:39Yeah.
- 45:39You sign your life away, in essence when you sign your forms and stuff.
- 45:42Hit that line man foot to the floor and just gone.
- 45:45Yeah.
- 45:46They were not whole and going around all the court, I mean as fast as
- 45:49that thing could take it, they were going at it nose the tail.
- 45:51It was pretty awesome.
- 45:52Awesome.
- 45:53And to your point, the BMW booth was probably one of the coolest VIP
- 45:57experiences because we got to be over top of the pit box during the Group
- 46:02C run when they were qualifying and their pit change and all that stuff.
- 46:06And then obviously a pit fire broke out.
- 46:08You can check out the video.
- 46:08It's actually really comical.
- 46:09Yeah.
- 46:10But it was such a awesome view, such a great place to be.
- 46:13You're sort of in the middle of pit row too, so you could
- 46:16see from one way to the other.
- 46:17I mean it was, oh, that was awesome.
- 46:19That was, oh yeah.
- 46:19I mean the view and watch that was pheno food sucked.
- 46:22No Diet Mountain Dew beverages sucked.
- 46:24But the view was phenomenal.
- 46:25I mean, you're leaning right over and you check out the channels
- 46:28and the video, stuff like that.
- 46:29Everything's right there.
- 46:30And I mean, you get the sounds, the smell and everything like that.
- 46:33I mean, it just, and it was awesome when, and you wanted to use that adage
- 46:37of like a monkey to a football uhhuh and one of the stops and they're during one
- 46:42of the rings because it was just mass chaos from the perspective of, you know,
- 46:46these are historic cars, so normally you have a shop that's doing it, so that
- 46:49shop's doing other cars too as well.
- 46:51Yeah.
- 46:51So they were serving some other ones.
- 46:52So.
- 46:53You like had one guy that was by himself with about 20 people.
- 46:56Then he had five guys.
- 46:57With the five people working on all five cars.
- 46:59It seemed to be so, it was, it was really cool to see.
- 47:02But the sound, it's Clarkson says, gives you the fizz.
- 47:05It just, it warms you.
- 47:07I mean it just like, yes.
- 47:08I mean it just, it gets to your soul.
- 47:09It's so awesome.
- 47:11I still think the EO 9 0 5 B, the 19 92 1 with the V 10.
- 47:15Oh with the Jordan Formula one engine was the best sounding
- 47:18group C card there was by far.
- 47:20It just rips your ears out and it also kind of brings a tear to your eye.
- 47:23'cause you're like, that's when motors were motors in Formula One.
- 47:26Yes.
- 47:26Like they're pretty awesome.
- 47:27Yes.
- 47:27Talk about the pit stop.
- 47:29I still think those Porsche guys during the Porsche race heard you, because you
- 47:33want to talk about guys clowning around.
- 47:34They put this car in the air on the Jack with no Jacks stand.
- 47:38The dude slides underneath it and Williams's like leaning out and
- 47:41he's like, you think they should put a Jacks stand under there?
- 47:44Oh, OSHA's not involved over there one bit or anything.
- 47:47'cause in all I'm doing is just waiting for that thing to drop on
- 47:50this dude because I wouldn't trust that floor jack keeping that thing up.
- 47:55So from there I went with the A-C-O-U-S-A pre to the administrator's
- 48:00lounge, which is pretty cool.
- 48:01It's all a bunch of a CO people.
- 48:02They're even higher up.
- 48:03They've got a higher vantage point.
- 48:04It kind of sits almost directly above the BM BMW box.
- 48:07We went there for a little bit and then you and I went to the
- 48:10club to ot, which was pretty cool.
- 48:12Yeah, that's a different experience.
- 48:13That's like the exclusive driver's club.
- 48:15They have their own private box.
- 48:17It's all glassed in, got food, a whole bunch, good food, wine.
- 48:21They had the best food by far.
- 48:22Yes.
- 48:22So shout out to Charlotte Verne for doing that.
- 48:25And no air conditioning though.
- 48:26They don't believe in that.
- 48:27In Europe, they don't believe in that over there.
- 48:29Bit stuffy.
- 48:30It was.
- 48:30It was.
- 48:31And then if you opened the door, you got yelled at.
- 48:33Oh yeah.
- 48:34I mean you had some very pretentious people sitting in that thing.
- 48:37And it's like you look at it, so when you're in there, it's enclosed and,
- 48:40and when you're sitting in the thing, looking on the track, in the thing
- 48:42off to the right, there's a small little deck here, there's a door,
- 48:45you go out and right, there's deck.
- 48:46But then to the left, same thing, but it's much larger and it's got the
- 48:49grandstand seating over by the stairs.
- 48:51There's security, everything like that, keeping people from entering.
- 48:54So you're like, oh, it's part of it.
- 48:55So, and it was stuffy.
- 48:56So we went out there to someone inside decided to lock
- 48:59the door on us, like, oops.
- 49:01But on the other hand, you get to sit down and you get to talk with Jurgen
- 49:05Barth and you get to talk with Gerard Lause and you get to talk with all
- 49:08these pro drivers that are in there.
- 49:10So that was sort of cool.
- 49:10Yeah.
- 49:10And, and the club de Palat was our refuge when we got rained out on.
- 49:15Sunday.
- 49:15So that worked out really well 'cause it's the only place that is closed.
- 49:18So at that point I was like, well it's a little stuffy but I'm not wet.
- 49:21Yeah, it worked out well.
- 49:22I mean it's again, for experience wise, it's, you know, you're sitting there
- 49:25going, how in the hell did we end up here?
- 49:27Yeah.
- 49:28I mean it's one of those things like you're thinking to yourself,
- 49:29the people you mentioned are just hanging out in there, stuff like that.
- 49:32And again, it just adds to this experience that just seemed to
- 49:35get better and better and better.
- 49:37Yeah.
- 49:37And I kept collecting more and more armbands as time went on too.
- 49:41You need an armband to go everywhere, right?
- 49:42Yeah.
- 49:43And you need to scan your ticket to enter, you need to scan a ticket to
- 49:46leave or your armband or whatever.
- 49:48I mean, so they were gathering data left, right, and center.
- 49:51And then obviously we did all the A CO stuff like La Chappelle and the Our
- 49:54Tribune and that was all the Tribune was great for breakfast the morning.
- 49:57Yeah, it rained and all that stuff.
- 49:59But there's two more things that we did I think that are super cool.
- 50:02We had to split up in order to do them.
- 50:03So you went to the grid walk and I'll let you talk about that.
- 50:06And I went to the SPORTIF mode, which is the famous building you see on tv.
- 50:12The round one that has the panorama.
- 50:13It sits over top of start finish and you can see down the Porsche
- 50:17Chicanes down in, you know, where the Ferris wheel is and all that.
- 50:19And I will tell you the view from there, and I took pictures and
- 50:23stuff is absolutely incredible.
- 50:25Now granted, there weren't a lot of people up there.
- 50:27We could hear a pin drop.
- 50:28It was like a library up there.
- 50:30Club de OT had the best food.
- 50:31Hands down.
- 50:32We can agree on that.
- 50:33But the Sportif model, it's one of those places when you go up to that
- 50:36fifth level, you gotta have the special access and the handshake and the
- 50:39colored band and the whole nine yards.
- 50:41And you're just like, I am in a place.
- 50:43I think maybe this is where the Pope watches Lamonts.
- 50:46You know what I mean?
- 50:46Yeah.
- 50:46Like it's, it's super special.
- 50:48It's super exclusive.
- 50:50So that was really neat.
- 50:51Now could I have spent the whole weekend there?
- 50:53Not unless all my friends were with me because there wasn't enough atmosphere
- 50:56at classic versus what I was told is at the 24, that place is bumping.
- 51:01It's like a club and it's like a whole thing and there's music
- 51:04and you're watching the race.
- 51:05And so with a different group of people, different atmosphere,
- 51:08that would be a lot of fun.
- 51:09That would be holy cow.
- 51:11Sees so much from there it's got a 270 degree view.
- 51:15So it's like you can see all around you, which is awesome.
- 51:17That's a neat thing.
- 51:18Yeah.
- 51:18Been on cron 'cause right where that thing's located.
- 51:19I mean you're seeing down the one way you're seeing down the other way.
- 51:22I'm sure that was spectacular.
- 51:23And again, that was the cool thing too, is you got to be able to go do that stuff.
- 51:27I got the opportunity to go do some other things too.
- 51:29So I mean we got these experiences Yeah.
- 51:31That we can share.
- 51:32Yeah, we did a lot together and knew it but then we got to do these
- 51:35separate things that really kind of just took it to the moon in regards
- 51:38to what the experience was regarding.
- 51:40The grid walk was unbelievable and a huge thank you to Bill Withers
- 51:43'cause he had gotten a band to do it as a thank you for getting his wife
- 51:46to go on the, a hot lap, whatever.
- 51:48He gave it to me and I was unbelievably humbled that he
- 51:53actually, you know, gave that to me.
- 51:54'cause you can pay to get to do it but it ain't cheap.
- 51:57Probably the most expensive upgrade.
- 51:58Yes.
- 51:59It was like 1500 bucks or something, wasn't it?
- 52:01So it was insane.
- 52:02Yeah, it was crazy amount.
- 52:03So I mean that was like huge on his part.
- 52:05I mean I just like, I could not believe it.
- 52:06So yeah, that was really cool to go out there and there might've been, I
- 52:10don't know, 500 people, 300 people that probably got out there to do it out of
- 52:14the 200,000 that were in attendance.
- 52:16Uh, you wanna talk about humbling thing?
- 52:18'cause you know, so we go in and as you start going down the line,
- 52:21'cause you're at the tail end, things start thinning out where people start
- 52:24stopping to talk all this stuff.
- 52:25So, you know, you're not in such a crowd.
- 52:26But I got all the way down and was filming stuff that night.
- 52:29Stopped, got separated, like went out in the middle of the track up
- 52:33front as far as I almost could go.
- 52:34And I had to change my battery.
- 52:36So I'm down on the ground all of a sudden, you know, I stand
- 52:38up and I look at the crowd.
- 52:40You wanna talk about holy shit moment because I mean, right there alone's gotta
- 52:44be about 80, 90,000 people standing there and you know, they're looking at you
- 52:48going, how's this jackass get down there?
- 52:50It's very humbling to see that crowd like that.
- 52:53I mean, it's really puts things again into perspective for what these guys see.
- 52:57It's.
- 52:58Unbelievable seeing that and seeing what the lineup was.
- 53:01The cars talking to the guys.
- 53:03'cause they started out, I think it was Plateau four, I think it was.
- 53:06Yeah.
- 53:06It's all like the cobras and the GT forties.
- 53:09Yeah.
- 53:09All the stuff from the sixties.
- 53:10Yeah.
- 53:10That did the start.
- 53:11They did the running Laman start, which was epic.
- 53:13Yeah.
- 53:14They did the actual one and it's like, I'm amazed at a couple of the guys
- 53:17didn't fall over from heart attacks.
- 53:18That guy in that Cobra late elevens for quite a long time.
- 53:23There was a some sketchy moments, some of those guys pulling out
- 53:26going, Ooh, that's gonna be expensive, but that one's cool too.
- 53:28Bringing that back.
- 53:29They have done such an awesome job putting that together and just
- 53:34creating the experience and how and how you can partake in it.
- 53:37Yes, granted some of the stuff's gonna be a bit pricey, but you know, somehow
- 53:40some way if you can do it, I highly recommend trying to get all these
- 53:43experiences and especially when you buy your ticket, don't go buy the base thing.
- 53:46You gotta go buy the ones where you got the paddock access, everything like that.
- 53:50Become an ACL member.
- 53:51You get even more stuff that pays for itself tenfold.
- 53:54I'm telling you right now, thousand percent.
- 53:55It pays for itself tenfold.
- 53:56But it was just, again, the experience again, you know, you see Lifetime,
- 53:59it's gonna stick with lifetime.
- 54:00But that's something that's gonna stick at the forefront of your mind
- 54:02because it's just unbelievable.
- 54:04And the racing too.
- 54:05Yeah.
- 54:06Seeing those cars in picture, seeing them in a museum is one thing,
- 54:09but seeing a nine 17, seeing an Audi R eight, seeing a Ferrari 3
- 54:1333 SP a PEO 9 0 5 B at full tilt.
- 54:16Yeah.
- 54:17Lamont's Classic isn't a race, it's a freaking time machine.
- 54:20Like it's taking you back to that era of racing and suddenly you're like,
- 54:24it's as if you were there for real.
- 54:26And these guys aren't messing around.
- 54:27It's like Goodwood when they do the revival, not the Hill Climb,
- 54:31which is the festival of speed.
- 54:32Yeah.
- 54:32They're going at it.
- 54:33I mean, they're driving nine tenths.
- 54:35They're not messing around.
- 54:36And it's like, you guys okay, you're going home.
- 54:38First of all, I heard every driver pays like 10 grand or 40 grand or
- 54:42whatever the heck it is, and they're going home with a plastic trophy, but
- 54:45they're running the crap outta these cars that are in some ways priceless.
- 54:48Some of them are Oh yeah, one of one, right?
- 54:51And you're just like, what?
- 54:52Yeah.
- 54:52You're talking, this is high stakes poker right here.
- 54:55Seven Figure Cars, and some of 'em starting with the five to eight.
- 54:58Yeah, I mean, it's just.
- 54:59And God bless 'em too.
- 55:00And the cool thing is it's not like you're just hearing this engine just
- 55:02blip the throttle and just sitting there.
- 55:04I mean, you're hearing that thing coming out, full chat going,
- 55:06I mean it just singing unreal.
- 55:08And it makes you sit there going, why are they getting away from this?
- 55:10Yeah, you get it 'cause environment, this kind of stuff.
- 55:13But I mean there's gotta be some way to bring that back.
- 55:15'cause I mean it's, I wanna say majority of the conversations where
- 55:18when you kind of hear other people eavesdrop and whatnot, everything
- 55:22kept pointing out was about just how.
- 55:23Glorious those things sounded.
- 55:24Yeah, I mean just, oh, fantastic.
- 55:26And for those just, Hey, I dropped a 20 minute video and all it
- 55:29is is just all on track stuff.
- 55:31I'm not even talking, it's just hearing the cars go so awesome.
- 55:34Let them do the work.
- 55:35'cause I mean, that's all you need to hear.
- 55:37And Tanya, they beat us too at, we've joked about this before, like on the
- 55:40rich people, thanks where, you know, we should get the go-karts together that
- 55:43look like the replica cars and go racing.
- 55:45They do that at Lamont Classic with the kids and it is.
- 55:48Hilarious.
- 55:49Yeah, the cars look good.
- 55:51I mean, they're really cool.
- 55:52Yeah, definitely got the corner marketed on that too.
- 55:55Some of them couldn't even make it up the hill in that first straight
- 55:57'cause that is a hill that goes up.
- 55:58It is.
- 55:59It's deceptive.
- 56:00It's steep.
- 56:00Yeah.
- 56:00Yeah.
- 56:01I mean it's, you don't realize how steep that is.
- 56:02And it was ones that had two kids in it, so I think they pushing
- 56:05maximum weight limit on that.
- 56:06But it's really cool to watch.
- 56:08'cause I mean, God, they had to have close to 80.
- 56:10There was so many, I mean they had to grid 'em up going way back.
- 56:14I mean it was, it was really cool.
- 56:15Yeah.
- 56:15And they do qualifying for that too.
- 56:17Yeah.
- 56:17It's just hilarious.
- 56:18Yeah, I mean they take that stuff serious.
- 56:20That was really cool.
- 56:21See, 'cause it gets the kids involved, it gets them to doing something.
- 56:24A little side story.
- 56:25This is a point when I was kinda wandering around myself and I
- 56:27was walking past the one paddock.
- 56:29Sure enough, as it's trying to come out outta the paddock to go down to wherever
- 56:33this lister Kny was sitting there rumbling away and they're trying to turn
- 56:37right and you know, obviously, you know, these cars don't have any turn radius.
- 56:40Behind it was the bread van.
- 56:42But these three kids and those little carts were coming up.
- 56:44There's a car parked and they're trying to come, they stopped him right next
- 56:47to that car and they told the guy and the lister, Hey, alright, come out.
- 56:50So the guy's doing a 10 point turn to try and get around him side pipes right there.
- 56:54Blast these little kids right there at ear level.
- 56:56This guy going by.
- 56:58I'm like, just move those kids.
- 57:00Get 'em outta the way.
- 57:00Tell 'em to go.
- 57:01I'm just watching this take place going.
- 57:03That kid's gonna be deaf now.
- 57:05Yeah.
- 57:05But seeing those things go like that, and again, it was just those little things
- 57:08that all of a sudden it's like, oh my god.
- 57:10Elicit.
- 57:10But then the bread van infamous of Bread Van Ferrari right there,
- 57:14pulling out everything like that.
- 57:15I mean, again, talk about value of a car and everything like that.
- 57:18And she's like, great deal.
- 57:19Pulling on out, driving away.
- 57:20That was so cool.
- 57:21It was great because we talked last time I went to Lama two years
- 57:24ago, like how much walking David and I did and obviously mm-hmm.
- 57:27You know, we're recounting this, some of it for him because
- 57:29he's gonna listen to this.
- 57:30He's gonna get Yeah.
- 57:31More jealous than he was when we were texting him the whole time.
- 57:33Yeah.
- 57:34I was Florida.
- 57:35Yeah, I was Florida.
- 57:36Exactly.
- 57:36So we went from Tetra Rouge to the four Chicanes where the Ferris wheel
- 57:42and the Porsche Experience Center is.
- 57:43That's sort of like our area outside of the hot lap where we
- 57:47got to see the rest of the track.
- 57:48That's where we walked.
- 57:49I recalculated, we were just shy of 40 miles of walking in those four days.
- 57:54So that's not too long.
- 57:55Well now that was you.
- 57:57Yes.
- 57:57By yes.
- 57:58I had a few extra things in there because yeah, you're like a busy bee, so going
- 58:01around, but two of the days, because I have some ailments in my body that
- 58:06I reach maximum, I'm gonna go lay down because my body can't take anymore.
- 58:10Luckily, the tram goes out there, but it's not close.
- 58:13And found it the first day.
- 58:15And it was funny enough 'cause I was walking out and uh, Ty was walking there.
- 58:18I ran his, so I walked with him to it and I walked down the one street right there.
- 58:22He went past the K one cart.
- 58:24It wasn't bad.
- 58:24It was maybe a mile and a half at most, maybe a mile.
- 58:27So jump on and go.
- 58:28Well.
- 58:29Next day kind of saying I gotta go.
- 58:32They decide to close that stop for whatever reason.
- 58:35That's the coast to the track.
- 58:36They rock strike.
- 58:37Yeah.
- 58:37There's three other people.
- 58:38There's two girls standing there and then there's an Indian fellow
- 58:41standing there and we're sitting waiting at time's up there.
- 58:43I don't read French.
- 58:44I have no clue.
- 58:44They just goes right past us.
- 58:46Then guy's talking and we going basically, I could tell what he's saying.
- 58:49He is like, what the hell?
- 58:50I could make out that and look it up and think whatnot.
- 58:53And he points down.
- 58:53So I go, I guess this one's closed.
- 58:55We gotta go to the next one.
- 58:56So I'm hustling down the street to the next stop because I don't
- 58:59wanna get passed again by the train.
- 59:01It was nice.
- 59:01'cause the fact is where we were staying, it basically dropped you
- 59:04off right at where we were at.
- 59:05So, which was great.
- 59:06Didn't have do much walking out, but it was a hike just to get
- 59:08to that tram to take it back.
- 59:10And I don't, I never paid, I think, to buy the ticket I just hopped on.
- 59:15And if someone asked, I figured out.
- 59:16It's sort of like the Sonoma thing.
- 59:18You apologize now, next time you'll pay, right?
- 59:21Yeah.
- 59:21Well they, but I didn't feel bad because Wither's wife,
- 59:24Simone, she's the same thing.
- 59:25She just gets on and she goes, if someone asked, then I'll pay.
- 59:28Okay.
- 59:29I'm not the only one.
- 59:30So they asked, asks good it it's a lot of walking.
- 59:33We did a lot of walking.
- 59:34We did a lot of walking.
- 59:34Even when we got back, 'cause we walked everywhere even to go to dinner
- 59:37and we finally found what like the hot spots are for the restaurants
- 59:40and that was at Republic Square or whatever they call it, downtown Lamont.
- 59:43We finally found some good places to eat.
- 59:45We had dinner with some folks, so that was all good.
- 59:47We did a lot of car spotting while we were roaming around.
- 59:50Yeah, that was neat.
- 59:51All sorts of weird stuff that was out there.
- 59:53Like the sunburst 3 0 8 and you know, some of the other stuff that's just randomly
- 59:57parked like here and there and everywhere.
- 59:58I mean there's cars from all over, from Switzerland, from
- 1:00:00Italy, from France, from Jersey.
- 1:00:01People are coming in.
- 1:00:02Obviously 200,000 people coming in for this event.
- 1:00:04So you got cars all over the place and you start to recognize, oh those
- 1:00:07guys are at our hotel and they've got the triumph and you know, that's the
- 1:00:10guy with the three 30 Ferrari that was driving downtown or whatever.
- 1:00:13Yeah, I gotta do my hot car picks.
- 1:00:15I came in with two cars, I would've taken home from France
- 1:00:18Street cars are on the track.
- 1:00:19No, no street cars.
- 1:00:19Like I would take these cars home with me.
- 1:00:21They are a little bit more modern.
- 1:00:23So here, here are my hot picks for cars.
- 1:00:25I would take home from France.
- 1:00:26I already know which one is I?
- 1:00:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:29The first one is that EO 5 0 8 Sport Wagon.
- 1:00:33Remember that one?
- 1:00:34The really wide low?
- 1:00:35That thing was cool.
- 1:00:36Super aggressive.
- 1:00:37It looks kind of like a Audi RS six.
- 1:00:39That was hot.
- 1:00:40Yeah, that was sweet.
- 1:00:41Yeah.
- 1:00:42That's my number one pick.
- 1:00:43Yeah, that thing was killer, followed by the hotness of all hotness.
- 1:00:47That Alpine A one 10 R al team?
- 1:00:50Yeah, or whatever they pronounce that dude.
- 1:00:53That's what I would take too.
- 1:00:54I agree with you on that thousand, that thing was gorgeous that that car's
- 1:00:58gotta come here somehow, some way.
- 1:00:59I mean that thing was phenomenal at that level, that old team level.
- 1:01:03I mean that's basically a GT three specked car.
- 1:01:06I mean it's all gutted out and caged and there's carbon fiber every
- 1:01:09time you turn around on that thing.
- 1:01:10I mean, the only thing, it doesn't have sort of like the alpha male four
- 1:01:14C 'cause of the tub and everything.
- 1:01:16It doesn't have a manual transmission.
- 1:01:18No.
- 1:01:18So it It's all computerized flappy paddle.
- 1:01:20But you know what?
- 1:01:21Because of all the other cool stuff it comes with, I'm totally okay with it.
- 1:01:25Oh yeah, I agree with you on that.
- 1:01:26I mean, Matt, fair Smoking Tire channel, they got their hands on
- 1:01:30one, some has it here for a year.
- 1:01:32I know it was show display or something, but did what he had to do and they
- 1:01:34made the same exact comment in saying, you know what, you know you can't get
- 1:01:37AEM manager, but the way the gearbox, everything works, you don't miss it.
- 1:01:40Yeah.
- 1:01:40You know, it just.
- 1:01:41Unbelievable.
- 1:01:42But the other car I would've taken this F told TDF that was there.
- 1:01:44Oh yeah, that'd been the other one.
- 1:01:46But again, they were just parked up in the parking lot where we were parked,
- 1:01:48you know, underneath the car yet.
- 1:01:49But it just tells you the level of cars that were just out and about.
- 1:01:53I think that's one of the cool things about over there.
- 1:01:55Granted for us, it's driving for me, like Ohio to Indiana, to Michigan,
- 1:01:59whatever that, but you know, they're driving from France to Italy, you
- 1:02:02know, for UK and stuff like that.
- 1:02:03They take their cars and drive 'em on these road trips, which is awesome to see.
- 1:02:07It's a lot more prevalent over there than it is over here.
- 1:02:10I think it's really cool to see.
- 1:02:12But that's a cool thing going over there, just seeing the
- 1:02:14stuff that we can't get here.
- 1:02:15Stuff you can drool over, man.
- 1:02:17We should have that.
- 1:02:18And just, and, and not just the newer stuff, the older stuff as well.
- 1:02:21I mean, just stuff that like you know about, you've read about, especially
- 1:02:23like the hot hatches and stuff like that.
- 1:02:25It's like, man, these things are just so cool.
- 1:02:27I will say the one cool thing if you go there, when you go to the square
- 1:02:30area, when you figure out where the square's at, there is the coolest
- 1:02:34merry-go-round I've ever seen Two stories.
- 1:02:38Unbelievably beautiful.
- 1:02:39Really cool.
- 1:02:39Especially if you've got kids or little kids.
- 1:02:41I mean, is that the one next to the Kentucky Fried Chicken?
- 1:02:44Yeah, it's right next to the Kentucky Fried Chicken.
- 1:02:45You can't miss it.
- 1:02:46It adds a little ambiance.
- 1:02:47You can smell the wave of the fried chicken made no sense.
- 1:02:52So bizarre.
- 1:02:52Yeah, and they got the drive through window that nobody can drive up to.
- 1:02:55You walk up to the drive to it.
- 1:02:57So bizarre.
- 1:02:58Yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:58There's a lot of contrasting things.
- 1:03:00'cause you know, you're walking in cobblestones, you have this beautiful
- 1:03:03old square and then all of a sudden there's Kentucky Fried Chicken.
- 1:03:05It was so bizarre.
- 1:03:06And, and that's the one thing, France food was super eclectic.
- 1:03:09I know if Brad was here with us, he'd be wanting to know about the food.
- 1:03:12Lots of Persian stuff and Indian and curries and like there was a good blend.
- 1:03:17It wasn't like the typical like, oh my God, we're gonna eat escargo.
- 1:03:20Or you know, something like that.
- 1:03:21It would, there was a really interesting mix of cuisine in France,
- 1:03:24so I wasn't disappointed with that.
- 1:03:26I don't know that we had a bad meal.
- 1:03:28Well, once we got found to a place that would serve Americans.
- 1:03:30Yeah.
- 1:03:30It wasn't bad at all.
- 1:03:31Well, there was that problem too.
- 1:03:32Yeah.
- 1:03:33You don't have a reservation.
- 1:03:34We'll let 20 other people in because you don't have a reservation.
- 1:03:37Exactly.
- 1:03:38Yeah.
- 1:03:38Whatever.
- 1:03:38As we said, you got French.
- 1:03:40Oh, that other place is better anyway.
- 1:03:42Yeah, well it turned out and you're eating three courses.
- 1:03:45God, and they look at you very strangely.
- 1:03:47If you don't eat one of the courses, they're like, look at you like you
- 1:03:49have a third head or something.
- 1:03:51Because man, you gotta have your app, your Maine, your dessert everyth like that.
- 1:03:54So it's like starve yourself a little bit to the day.
- 1:03:56'cause you will a hundred percent.
- 1:03:57We had this discussion over there too.
- 1:03:58It's how they're making money because it's not like here, the states where they're
- 1:04:01turning tables, turning tables like, Hey, we need four turns to this dinner service.
- 1:04:05They're basic.
- 1:04:06Like one turn.
- 1:04:07I mean that's just you.
- 1:04:07That's it.
- 1:04:08Then they're done.
- 1:04:08They close up shop, they go home.
- 1:04:10Bizarre.
- 1:04:10It's unbelievable.
- 1:04:11It's all baffling, but tweak their own.
- 1:04:13So God bless 'em.
- 1:04:13My number one top tip, if you go to Lama now that I've actually had to drive
- 1:04:18there and do that part of it, 'cause I didn't have to do that the first time.
- 1:04:21I would say the expo parking outside of the main gate across the museum,
- 1:04:26right by the T 22 Tribunes and all that stuff, which isn't far from the
- 1:04:30A CO Tribune and the Porsche box and the Club de Piot and all that stuff.
- 1:04:33That is choice.
- 1:04:34Like that is prime parking.
- 1:04:36It was quarter full.
- 1:04:38Yeah.
- 1:04:39It cost me 40 bucks to park there for four days.
- 1:04:42Undercover too.
- 1:04:43That's other nice.
- 1:04:43They have the solar panels everywhere.
- 1:04:45So I'm like, top tip, if you can buy expo parking, doesn't matter what event
- 1:04:49you're there for, buy those parking passes because it's a short walk to everything.
- 1:04:54That's the best spot to park, period.
- 1:04:56Five minute walk to that main gate right there.
- 1:04:58Done.
- 1:04:59I mean museums, right?
- 1:05:00Yeah.
- 1:05:00I mean 40 bucks.
- 1:05:01That's the deal.
- 1:05:02That's make a note of that because that was perfect.
- 1:05:04So let's talk about our return trip.
- 1:05:06We kind of alluded to this earlier on the way out to Lamont, it was sort of like,
- 1:05:12eh, typical traffic, blah, blah blah.
- 1:05:14Nothing really to write home about the way back though, because it was Sunday.
- 1:05:18Now remember back into our earlier discussion regarding gas mileage.
- 1:05:22Go ahead.
- 1:05:22Yes, yes.
- 1:05:23Yeah, we're gonna, Tanya wants to know about this.
- 1:05:25So they filled the car for me at Daal.
- 1:05:27We drove all the way to Lama.
- 1:05:28We run around, we get lost, we miss an exit or two a couple of times.
- 1:05:32That one we backtracked like 20 minutes lost all that time.
- 1:05:35So anyway, on our way back to the airport to Paris, we are rained out of the race.
- 1:05:40Like they red flagged a bunch of the plateaus, the sessions,
- 1:05:43whatever you wanna call them.
- 1:05:44So we hung out at the Club de Palat, and then you finally were like,
- 1:05:47man, let's get the hell outta here.
- 1:05:48Let's just beat the traffic of anybody leaving the track, and let's get out
- 1:05:51of the area and head back to Paris.
- 1:05:53What did we have, like maybe half a tank left or something like that on this.
- 1:05:56Little three cylinder corn popper.
- 1:05:58It was below half.
- 1:05:59Yeah, I mean, it was right there, but I was like, uh, if I do
- 1:06:02the math, it's this far away.
- 1:06:04We should be okay.
- 1:06:04It's mostly highway.
- 1:06:05It should have been fine.
- 1:06:06Yeah.
- 1:06:07Yeah.
- 1:06:08Should have been key work.
- 1:06:09So I prepaid the fuel and I was like, I'm not spending any money
- 1:06:12on this car if I don't have to.
- 1:06:13We're doing okay until we basically get to the edge of what I call
- 1:06:18Dante's nine circles of hell, which is all those circles of Paris.
- 1:06:21And we have to cut across Paris to get to De Gaul because it's on the
- 1:06:25north eastern corner or whatever.
- 1:06:27So you gotta go through all this mess to get there, and the traffic's
- 1:06:30getting worse and the rain's coming.
- 1:06:31And it's just like the last time I drove in Paris.
- 1:06:33And the drivers are super aggressive cutting people off, and the trucks
- 1:06:37just get over when they feel like it.
- 1:06:38And you're quietly sitting there and I'm like, gnashing my teeth the entire time.
- 1:06:43Well, I had a pee real bad.
- 1:06:44There was that too.
- 1:06:46And I'm like, we're not gonna make it.
- 1:06:48No, we're not gonna make, and then it was like the mileage was just plummeting.
- 1:06:51And I'm like, we're gonna have to stop.
- 1:06:53There's nowhere to stop.
- 1:06:54There's nowhere to get off.
- 1:06:55There's no fuel.
- 1:06:56Even the GP PS says there's no gas around.
- 1:06:58And then the car starts making weird.
- 1:07:00Bing, bing, bing.
- 1:07:01You're like, what was that?
- 1:07:02Ignore it.
- 1:07:02Making some big noises now like, okay, go a little further.
- 1:07:06Bing, bing, bing.
- 1:07:07And then a little light turns on.
- 1:07:09But one point it shot back up like, oh look, it did.
- 1:07:11And the mileage, because we started moving it, so it was like, oh,
- 1:07:14we're, we're in the home stretch.
- 1:07:15We're clear.
- 1:07:16And then the traffic doubled down on us and it got worse.
- 1:07:19And then more lights started turning on the dashboard.
- 1:07:21So I kid you not Tonya, we get to desal.
- 1:07:23Dugal is massive.
- 1:07:24I mean it's its own city and you're driving around and we're
- 1:07:27trying to get to the rental place.
- 1:07:28And so again, they love their roundabouts.
- 1:07:30It's like circling a toilet bowl to get to the rental car place and terminal too.
- 1:07:34So you gotta go all the way and go here and go there and this
- 1:07:37and that and the other thing.
- 1:07:38And we finally get there and it's all these lights are on the dash.
- 1:07:41I don't know if you saw 'em or not, William.
- 1:07:43Oh.
- 1:07:43But I've told them, I said We are gonna coast in, there's nothing left.
- 1:07:46So we get in there and I just, I put it in neutral and we roll in.
- 1:07:50According to the gauge, there was 10 miles left in the tank.
- 1:07:54Yeah.
- 1:07:54Which I don't know was the truth because it was on zero.
- 1:07:57It was red.
- 1:07:58It was like that top gear episode where they sealed the gas tank and they kept
- 1:08:01driving and kept driving and they're like, when is it gonna run outta fuel?
- 1:08:04I think it was whatever was circulating in the fuel rail,
- 1:08:06it's what we were running on.
- 1:08:08Yeah.
- 1:08:08'cause there there was nothing left.
- 1:08:09Good luck getting that to the station of, fill it back up by.
- 1:08:12That's gonna be one of the fucking Americans.
- 1:08:16Hope they had a Jerry can somewhere with some gas.
- 1:08:18'cause that wasn't making it to the gas station.
- 1:08:20We got every penny out of that gas tank.
- 1:08:23The three cylinder turbo, all 75 horsepower got us to Lamont back on fumes.
- 1:08:27That's the only impressive part about that car was that Otherwise
- 1:08:30it was wholly unimpressive.
- 1:08:32Yeah.
- 1:08:32Ugh.
- 1:08:33I will say that the hotel, the Hilton, whatever's right there.
- 1:08:36Yeah, stay there.
- 1:08:37And another little tidbit, if you're coming back out and you got a flat
- 1:08:40stay at the Hilton, that's right there because you can get up in the morning,
- 1:08:43just walk right over to the airport.
- 1:08:44You roll out of bed and you're at your terminal.
- 1:08:46It's like done.
- 1:08:46Super easy.
- 1:08:47Nice hotel too.
- 1:08:48Good food restaurant's.
- 1:08:49Really good.
- 1:08:50Another recommendation for you guys, stay there 'cause it was awesome.
- 1:08:52So shout out again David Milton, we miss you next time.
- 1:08:56We are gonna shame you into going with us.
- 1:08:58So your trip ended, you went home.
- 1:09:00Other things going on?
- 1:09:01I continued the voyage and I met up with my family in Italy and my
- 1:09:06sister and my mom were already there.
- 1:09:07This is where Tanya picks up the story 'cause we're gonna talk
- 1:09:09about driving adventures in Italy.
- 1:09:19Tanya, you got there like a couple days before he went over, right?
- 1:09:22Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:23It's been a while since I've driven in Italy.
- 1:09:25So I have these not necessarily romantic fantasies about what it's like driving
- 1:09:30in Italy, but I began to realize about 20 minutes in to picking up the car at Maza.
- 1:09:36That driving in Italy has changed a lot.
- 1:09:39Remember I was telling you in the car, oh, just, you know, the French,
- 1:09:41they're aggressive, but when you get to Italy, it's like they're
- 1:09:44off the chain, they're unleashed.
- 1:09:45Everything's like a Grand Prix.
- 1:09:47And that might be true in Naples from what I understand, but the
- 1:09:50rest of Italy is, I don't know.
- 1:09:52'cause I guess you hadn't driven there in a hundred years.
- 1:09:54'cause the only thing I found different was I felt like there was more people
- 1:09:59taking too long to leave the left lane right to camp for passing.
- 1:10:03But otherwise.
- 1:10:05In the types of roads I would drive on.
- 1:10:07It wasn't like Autobahn in Germany, people were always normal.
- 1:10:11Is that because of the cameras and the systems that they use over there?
- 1:10:14The cameras have always been there.
- 1:10:15I'm like, what was it that you drove that they didn't exist?
- 1:10:18They were there when I drove 10 years ago.
- 1:10:20Right.
- 1:10:20I mean, the tele camera system tutor or whatever they call it that they have
- 1:10:25over there has been around a while, but now it feels like it's every 10 feet.
- 1:10:29So there's two different systems.
- 1:10:31Okay.
- 1:10:31The Tudor system on the large highways, and it's only on the big alto stratas,
- 1:10:36which is like our equivalent of 95 up and down the East coast or whatever.
- 1:10:40The Tudor system is an average speed camera, so it's actually
- 1:10:44not a point specific speed camera.
- 1:10:46So when you cross it the first time, couple miles later.
- 1:10:49You cross it again and it's supposed to calculate your average speed in
- 1:10:52that, cross the two, and then give you a ticket if you exceeded whatever
- 1:10:56the hell the average limit is.
- 1:10:58I'm so screwed
- 1:11:01because they're trying to not have somebody slam on the brakes two
- 1:11:05seconds before the speed camera and then do a million miles an hour and
- 1:11:09then slam on the brakes again, right?
- 1:11:11So if you kept an average speed, you're fine.
- 1:11:13Then they have the auto veloc system everywhere else, like in America
- 1:11:17where you have stationary cameras that are on the side of the road
- 1:11:20in various shapes, forms and sizes.
- 1:11:23Those are taking in point specific reading, but unlike hours which only
- 1:11:27work in the direction that the cameras pointed, apparently some of those doesn't
- 1:11:31matter which side of the road you're on, it can catch you in either direction.
- 1:11:35I'm so screwed.
- 1:11:36So if you thought you were safe, 'cause the camera's on the other side
- 1:11:40of the road so I can just keep going.
- 1:11:42Ooh, might not be the case.
- 1:11:45I've never gotten, knock on wood, I don't think I've ever gotten a speed ticket.
- 1:11:50I got a weird parking violation ticket one time, not even parking.
- 1:11:54It was apparently I drove down a street that it was in the two hour window of
- 1:11:59which you should not have been driving down the street, and I literally went
- 1:12:02like three cars deep on this street.
- 1:12:05U turned because I realized it wasn't even the street I needed to be on.
- 1:12:08U turned left and then six months later got this ticket about how
- 1:12:11like I was on an uh, unauthorized.
- 1:12:13Street or something.
- 1:12:14I'm like, whatever.
- 1:12:15How do you pay that?
- 1:12:16Hey man, it's modern times.
- 1:12:18Just go online and pay it.
- 1:12:20They hunt you down.
- 1:12:21Don't, you should see yours about December.
- 1:12:25That'll be my Christmas gift from Enterprise.
- 1:12:27Yeah.
- 1:12:28Basically they'll Merry Christmas, they'll send it to them and
- 1:12:30then they'll forward it along.
- 1:12:32I mean, hopefully not, they're really hard because the speed limits
- 1:12:36tend to fluctuate like a a lot.
- 1:12:39Wildly, wildly.
- 1:12:40Like suddenly you're like, oh, well first of all, you don't
- 1:12:43know what the speed limit is.
- 1:12:45Like I think I drove for half an hour at one point and I was like, I
- 1:12:48haven't seen the speed limit sign.
- 1:12:49I don't know how.
- 1:12:50And I'm like passing under the tutor thing.
- 1:12:52I'm like, I don't know how fast I should be going.
- 1:12:54But I was feeling rest assured by the quote locals who
- 1:12:58aren't slowing down at all.
- 1:13:00So I'm like, well, if I'm not going any faster than all these other people
- 1:13:04that are blowing by every form of camera, I guess hopefully I'm okay.
- 1:13:09Could you really go that fast in your rental car?
- 1:13:11I mean, what'd you have?
- 1:13:13I had a Citroen C3 Air Cross.
- 1:13:16Compact.
- 1:13:17SUV.
- 1:13:18It was slightly larger than what I was supposed to have gotten.
- 1:13:21I should have gotten probably something the size of a golf.
- 1:13:24However, when I booked the reservation that I made, you had to set the time
- 1:13:28you were picking it up and in the US you set a time and it really doesn't matter.
- 1:13:31It's Yeah, like an indication of when they start billing you.
- 1:13:35Right.
- 1:13:35But apparently in Europe, in Italy, when you show up at the rental counter and it's
- 1:13:391115 and you said you were picking up at noon, they go, we don't have your car yet.
- 1:13:43You reserve a car.
- 1:13:45Okay, we have a problem.
- 1:13:47Your car is not available.
- 1:13:49We can do a bicycle.
- 1:13:51Okay.
- 1:13:52Or a 7 47.
- 1:13:56She got French in Italy.
- 1:13:59We can upgrade you for 10 extra euros a day if you don't wanna wait.
- 1:14:03And I'm like, okay, I've already been up.
- 1:14:06I left America, I didn't sleep on the plane.
- 1:14:09I really wanna stand here for 45 minutes.
- 1:14:11I can offer a discount.
- 1:14:13It is a special discount because it is a discount of.
- 1:14:17Uh, more money you need to pay.
- 1:14:20Screw it.
- 1:14:20I'll pay 10 extra dollars.
- 1:14:22So I don't know what I should have gotten or what I would've gotten, but this is,
- 1:14:25I got this Citroen compact SUV thing.
- 1:14:28It's okay because I landed at the same airport as you
- 1:14:33and they didn't have any golfs anywhere, so we got the upgrade as well.
- 1:14:38So I ended up with a Nissan Qua.
- 1:14:41Oh geez.
- 1:14:42Yeah.
- 1:14:42Oh.
- 1:14:43How you pronounce that.
- 1:14:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:45Qua don't know why they call it that in America.
- 1:14:47That would be the equivalent to the rogue, more or less.
- 1:14:50It's in that size range.
- 1:14:52It's a Renault like anything else.
- 1:14:54How many horsepowers did you have, Tanya?
- 1:14:55I think it only had like a hundred or something, I think.
- 1:14:59I think.
- 1:14:59I think that's what I saw when I looked it up.
- 1:15:01It wasn't a lot.
- 1:15:02I had 158.
- 1:15:04Yeah.
- 1:15:04Woo.
- 1:15:05Race car.
- 1:15:06Chasing her in the mountains was like, no problem.
- 1:15:08And Jess was like, you need to back off.
- 1:15:10'cause I think she's got it floored.
- 1:15:14So driving in Italy to Tanya's point, it's not like the old days.
- 1:15:17That's what I noticed.
- 1:15:18They do drive slower.
- 1:15:20Although they were making fun when I was talking to some of the locals,
- 1:15:22like you were talking to some of the locals, they were like, don't
- 1:15:24you guys drive fast in America?
- 1:15:26I'm like, no.
- 1:15:27National speed limit is 65 miles an hour.
- 1:15:29Which is like what, one 10?
- 1:15:30They're all doing 80 on the highway.
- 1:15:33Yeah.
- 1:15:33The speed limit there is basically 80 on the The large highway.
- 1:15:36Yeah.
- 1:15:37Kilometers or miles per hour.
- 1:15:38There's 130 kilometers an hour, which is more or less 80 miles an hour.
- 1:15:42Yeah.
- 1:15:42Which our speed limit is 65 miles an hour and everybody's doing 90.
- 1:15:46So we do drive fast.
- 1:15:47Yeah.
- 1:15:48Yeah.
- 1:15:49They don't drive as aggressive as they used to.
- 1:15:51That's for sure.
- 1:15:52The one thing I did notice is France.
- 1:15:55Didn't have nearly as many trucks as Italy did.
- 1:15:59The right lane in Italy is truck after truck, after semi after semi.
- 1:16:04And they're all limited to like they can do 65 miles an hour, like tops 55 miles.
- 1:16:09I mean, they're really slow so they stay in the right lane.
- 1:16:11But the problem is usually on the raa it's three lanes, sometimes
- 1:16:15four, but it's three lanes.
- 1:16:16Generally they'll get over.
- 1:16:18And then you got this slow mule train of semis trying to pass
- 1:16:23another slow mule train of semis.
- 1:16:26And so now you're down to the left lane and then everybody tries to shift over.
- 1:16:30And then you got some 87-year-old guy in a Fiat 600 that can't get out of its
- 1:16:36own way and he's just parked in the left lane and it's like, what are we doing?
- 1:16:41I did flash my lights at some people, it worked at the left lane and it worked.
- 1:16:45They moved over, dude, I came up on somebody 'cause I was trying to clear
- 1:16:48some traffic and we were booking, so I flashed the lights at this dude in a
- 1:16:51Mercedes suddenly just boom outta the way.
- 1:16:53Goodbye parted this red sea.
- 1:16:55And I was through and I backed off and then I got over 'cause I was like, I felt
- 1:16:59bad 'cause I was holding somebody up.
- 1:17:01I saw like a Porsche coming and I'm like, I gotta get here.
- 1:17:03I gotta get outta the way.
- 1:17:04I'm already in the left lane so I gotta dump it and go.
- 1:17:07But yeah, it was like flashlights.
- 1:17:09That still works.
- 1:17:09I was happy about that.
- 1:17:10Maybe they drive a little bit slower now, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:17:13But they still respect, maybe there's a lot of tractor trailers on the road.
- 1:17:17I don't know.
- 1:17:17I didn't think it was any more than I've seen before.
- 1:17:20But they still respect the rules of the road for the most part.
- 1:17:23Yeah.
- 1:17:24You get this ass wipe that I'm like, am I in America right now?
- 1:17:26Like why are you in the left lane?
- 1:17:28But they will get over on the above average scale.
- 1:17:32Everybody gets over, they get out of the way.
- 1:17:34They don't just sit there doing stupid stuff in the left lane,
- 1:17:38but they don't know how to merge.
- 1:17:39I realized they don't know how to merge.
- 1:17:42Every traffic jam we ended up in was because they were closing a lane.
- 1:17:45It was like, you guys have forgotten the zipper.
- 1:17:48Like that used to be the thing.
- 1:17:49I didn't have any of those experiences.
- 1:17:51We did, and it was horrendous.
- 1:17:53Every time there was a traffic backup, what I experienced, which
- 1:17:56I could not understand 'cause we did hit traffic at one point.
- 1:18:00It was the most bizarre thing.
- 1:18:02I couldn't understand.
- 1:18:03There were no ramps and we were dead.
- 1:18:05Stop not moving.
- 1:18:06And I'm like, oh, this is gonna be fun.
- 1:18:08We're gonna be here for a while.
- 1:18:09Not moving, not moving, not moving.
- 1:18:11And then we'd move a little bit, not moving, not moving.
- 1:18:14Move a little bit and then suddenly you're doing 80 again.
- 1:18:16It was like a green light and all of a sudden we were moving and we were
- 1:18:20flowing, and then we'd stop again.
- 1:18:21But then like five minutes later, suddenly we stopped again.
- 1:18:24And I'm like, but there was no ramp, there was no shoulder.
- 1:18:27Why were we stopped?
- 1:18:28I couldn't understand it.
- 1:18:29Yeah.
- 1:18:30We had that problem too, this weird flow that I've never seen before.
- 1:18:33Despite the fact that the GPS that I was used in France got us lost a whole bunch
- 1:18:38for whatever reason in Italy, it was actually a godsend because it would tell
- 1:18:42me what the speed limit was, despite the fact that it was rapidly changing and it
- 1:18:47identified where the speed cameras were.
- 1:18:48Yeah.
- 1:18:49And on which side of the road it was on.
- 1:18:51So that was awesome.
- 1:18:51So that's why I jokingly, I probably got away with quite a bit because
- 1:18:56the GPS told us where everything was.
- 1:18:58So that was pretty awesome.
- 1:18:59So where it failed me in France.
- 1:19:01It worked out really, really well in Italy.
- 1:19:03So no problems there.
- 1:19:04The other thing I noticed about Italy, despite all the big trucks on
- 1:19:07the road, is the amount of trucks.
- 1:19:09I put air quotes rather, that people are driving now in Italy, there
- 1:19:12are more SUVs per capita in Italy than there's ever been before.
- 1:19:15Like, I mean, granted I'm in an SUV myself.
- 1:19:17I mean, that is not a fact check number.
- 1:19:20I'm telling you.
- 1:19:21It was like nine out of 10 were SUVs.
- 1:19:23There's always the Fiat 500 and the golf and all the little cars.
- 1:19:27But it was like I was constantly surrounded by, if it wasn't the
- 1:19:30Nissan, it was a EO or it was uh, you know, the Mercedes SU BMWs,
- 1:19:35I felt like I was in America.
- 1:19:37I was like, your roads and your towns weren't built for these size vehicles.
- 1:19:41Like when did you supersize, when did you get the Big Mac,
- 1:19:45you know, of cars in Italy.
- 1:19:46It just doesn't make sense.
- 1:19:47Well, did they force it down their throats with cross platform, you know,
- 1:19:51uh, manufacturing, all that stuff.
- 1:19:53You have to buy these now.
- 1:19:54Well, they might've, because you know, the other thing is.
- 1:19:57There's not a lot of old cars on the road.
- 1:19:59There's always the guy with the fiat multiple.
- 1:20:02There's always somebody with the Chiquito, you know, from the
- 1:20:05nineties or something like that.
- 1:20:06But they're fewer and far between because I think the way I understand it is
- 1:20:10Italy heavily taxes, keeping old cars.
- 1:20:13And so people are constantly sort of getting new stuff.
- 1:20:16If you looked around, it was all within the last five years, it was all really,
- 1:20:20really new cars, the way they drive.
- 1:20:22So transmission mechanics must make a lot of money.
- 1:20:26Right.
- 1:20:26Especially the older people when you see them a little bit sometimes,
- 1:20:30and it's just like, Ooh, my thought was in France, body shop, my
- 1:20:33heart hurts for this transmission.
- 1:20:35The clutch is alone, right?
- 1:20:37I mean, you're just like, man, ugh.
- 1:20:39You can't find it.
- 1:20:40Grind it.
- 1:20:40But you bring up a really valid point 'cause William and I noted that in
- 1:20:43France it was like nine out of every 10 cars, maybe eight out of every
- 1:20:4710 cars was still a stick shift, unless it was super new or a hybrid
- 1:20:50where they don't come with manuals.
- 1:20:52But Italy the same.
- 1:20:53There was a surprising number of cars you're like, I didn't know
- 1:20:56that was offered in a manual.
- 1:20:57Like those Jeeps that we saw, like all of them were stick shift like
- 1:21:01the Cherokee and not in gear when parked always with the hand brakes.
- 1:21:04That was weird about France.
- 1:21:06Like they don't leave them in gear.
- 1:21:07None of them.
- 1:21:08No.
- 1:21:08That's even a thing.
- 1:21:09I think that's sort of a universal thing they recommend not doing.
- 1:21:13Why?
- 1:21:13I mean, I've heard that even here, you should never leave your car in gear.
- 1:21:16It's bad.
- 1:21:17Yeah.
- 1:21:17It's easier to steal it if it's not in gear.
- 1:21:19Yeah, I totally, but yeah, I don't know.
- 1:21:21Like I've never had a transmission promise as a result of leaving it parked in gear.
- 1:21:24So I don't know what bad thing I've been doing.
- 1:21:27Yeah.
- 1:21:27I trust leaving my transmission in gear, then relying on my
- 1:21:31handbrake to hold the car.
- 1:21:32You know what I mean?
- 1:21:32Seeing some of these hand brakes on cars, that's not the most beefiest brake.
- 1:21:37And I accidentally the other day went to pull my handbrake and weld the cables.
- 1:21:41Came off again.
- 1:21:41So that's, guess I'm leaving it in gear
- 1:21:47to William's Point about France and seeing some cool cars.
- 1:21:50Well, what I didn't see a lot of, which I was surprised, I
- 1:21:54hardly saw any alphas in Italy.
- 1:21:56Yes.
- 1:21:57Yes.
- 1:21:57And normally there's tons.
- 1:21:59I think I saw two, there were not many.
- 1:22:01There were some Stelvio's every now and again.
- 1:22:03But that was pretty much it, the what we saw.
- 1:22:05But to your point, William was saying earlier, cool cars that we
- 1:22:08saw on the roads, there's a lot of stuff that isn't cool that you've
- 1:22:11seen in pictures and magazines.
- 1:22:12You're like, yeah.
- 1:22:13But I will say there's still a lot of VWs in Italy, which is
- 1:22:16totally cool and totally fine.
- 1:22:18But you know, we talked a lot on previous drive-throughs about like the ID two,
- 1:22:22the ID three, and you know, oh, that'd be kind of cool if they brought it here.
- 1:22:25Now that I've seen them in person, you can keep all of 'em.
- 1:22:28They look horrendous.
- 1:22:29They actually photograph better than they look in person, which is odd
- 1:22:32because usually cars don't photograph as well as they look in person.
- 1:22:36But these new VWs are just, ugh, I don't like 'em.
- 1:22:39They're getting out there in regards to styling and how, what they're doing.
- 1:22:42And it's almost like they don't do any type of focus group or let's do
- 1:22:46something or let's just go out into the public and talk to people in general.
- 1:22:49Get a consensus or get a little feedback.
- 1:22:51But it sounds like, nope, this is what we're doing.
- 1:22:53So I will say there was an ID buzz on the highway that's massive
- 1:22:58next to the things it was next to.
- 1:23:00At that time it did not look massive.
- 1:23:02Um, 'cause to your point, it was surrounded by a bunch of tractor trailers,
- 1:23:06but it was like a worker van of some sort.
- 1:23:08So it was white, but they had paneled out the back glass and the side glass.
- 1:23:14You only had glass at the front doors.
- 1:23:16It looked really cool actually.
- 1:23:18It didn't seem like it was like, see-through that, it was just like white,
- 1:23:21but the driver maybe could still see out.
- 1:23:23It seemed more like how sometimes we have those worker vans where
- 1:23:26they've closed off all the windows.
- 1:23:28It was like all white.
- 1:23:29The taillights were like blacked out and all this stuff, so maybe it wasn't a
- 1:23:32worker van, but um, it looked really good.
- 1:23:34That trim.
- 1:23:35See the car.
- 1:23:36I like the car I would take home, the car I would buy if I was in
- 1:23:39Italy was the Fiat Tepo wagon.
- 1:23:42I actually really liked that.
- 1:23:43It was reminiscent of older VWs.
- 1:23:46It had a very German look to it.
- 1:23:47At first I was like, what is that?
- 1:23:49And then I was like, that's a fiat no way.
- 1:23:51I really liked the look of that.
- 1:23:52I just saw the sedan version, but I think the wagon, something about
- 1:23:55the long roof, it just looks better.
- 1:23:57So that was my pick.
- 1:23:58You know, nothing to write home about in the performance department, but if you're
- 1:24:01looking for a family wagon with a manual transmission, like yeah, that's not bad.
- 1:24:05Looking at all outside of that, my number one pick for Italy was the Alpha 1 47
- 1:24:09GTA that we saw at Lamont's Classic.
- 1:24:11So that thing was awesome.
- 1:24:12Yeah, that day was nice.
- 1:24:14Let's talk a little bit more about our rental cars and driving in the mountains.
- 1:24:18How was that with your alleged a hundred horsepower and my
- 1:24:21legendary three spoke steering wheel, three spoke steering wheel.
- 1:24:26So where I was staying, I had a 20 minute ride up the mountain to get to where I
- 1:24:31was in a 20 minute ride down the mountain.
- 1:24:33She says ride, she means rally stage.
- 1:24:35Yes.
- 1:24:35I mean, it's hairpins and lefts and turns and all that.
- 1:24:38Is this the roads you were explaining to me, Eric, when you're talking about when
- 1:24:41you were younger going there and Yes.
- 1:24:43Yes.
- 1:24:44Following the car Uhhuh?
- 1:24:45Yes.
- 1:24:45Yes.
- 1:24:46Okay.
- 1:24:46It hasn't changed.
- 1:24:47It's more paved now than it used to be.
- 1:24:49That's the only difference.
- 1:24:51Except for the spots.
- 1:24:51It's not.
- 1:24:52Well, it's like Pikes Peak used to be gravel.
- 1:24:53I was pavement, so I I going up the mountain, I had to do a lot of shifting.
- 1:24:59You don't say a lot downshifting constantly.
- 1:25:01I'd say downshift.
- 1:25:02Yeah.
- 1:25:02Only one direction down.
- 1:25:04It won't go any lower,
- 1:25:07but you know, like honestly, the car wasn't anything, you know what,
- 1:25:11it got me where I needed to go.
- 1:25:13It took the bumps, it took everything like a champ.
- 1:25:18You were rowing the boat.
- 1:25:19If you needed to get around somebody, you had to plan it.
- 1:25:22Be strategic.
- 1:25:23You're constantly down shifting to, to get the curves and go
- 1:25:27up the hills on the mountain.
- 1:25:29You were riding with your mom, right?
- 1:25:31Uhhuh and a lot of this.
- 1:25:32How was she as a passenger?
- 1:25:34Did she critique?
- 1:25:35Is she quiet?
- 1:25:35She didn't say anything.
- 1:25:36The only time she got nervous was there are, so we, we ended up
- 1:25:42crossing through the mountains.
- 1:25:43We took sort of a back way to go visit some family.
- 1:25:47There were certain parts that got extremely tight, like I can only fit,
- 1:25:51I hope nobody's coming and there's a hairpin turn and I can't see and
- 1:25:55we're gonna have a head on collision.
- 1:25:56Then she was getting nervous, but otherwise she didn't really say much as
- 1:26:00long as there was kind of room for two.
- 1:26:02Let's fast forward to us going lead follow down the mountain, us behind Tanya and
- 1:26:08what was my wife saying the whole time?
- 1:26:09So I don't know if you realized, because again we came back through
- 1:26:13on part of a section where there was a lot of more turns that were tended
- 1:26:18to be blind and some corners that got narrow and like cliffs on one side.
- 1:26:21So, and I was in the front and I don't know if you noticed, I wasn't
- 1:26:24just driving like an ass, but as soon as I could see nobody was coming,
- 1:26:28I would cut onto the other side.
- 1:26:30Yes.
- 1:26:31Be like signaling, you can take the turn however you want.
- 1:26:34Nobody's coming.
- 1:26:35Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:35I've taken the opposite side of the road.
- 1:26:38No, no, no.
- 1:26:38I picked up that, that, so I want, I wanted to ask you because
- 1:26:41we didn't talk about it then figuring we talk about it now.
- 1:26:45I don't think we were driving overly aggressive whether we were coming
- 1:26:48down from the castle or we were going up, whatever we were doing.
- 1:26:51I don't think we were really pushing the cars because I think both of us
- 1:26:54agreed that they were giant pieces of crap and they weren't going to give
- 1:26:57us very much, even if we wanted it.
- 1:26:59I would like to think we were pretty well behaved.
- 1:27:02Other people might have.
- 1:27:04So I, so going up the mountain.
- 1:27:09I had people that would pull over and let me go right there.
- 1:27:12So it's obvious.
- 1:27:13They can tell that's, oh, that's an American.
- 1:27:14They're like, that's Tio right there.
- 1:27:16Just, they gotta tell that I was going to go at a little bit faster clip,
- 1:27:21like they were going, some people were going like, painfully slow.
- 1:27:24I'm like, dude.
- 1:27:25Seriously.
- 1:27:26I know I'm a gutless wonder, but we can go faster than this.
- 1:27:29According to Eric, he says that everyone has to stop at every house.
- 1:27:32Someone's car's in the driveways, they gotta stop and chat.
- 1:27:34Hundred percent.
- 1:27:35We got stuck behind a tractor.
- 1:27:37I was making a joke.
- 1:27:38I said, somewhere up here, we're gonna get stuck behind a
- 1:27:40tractor whip around the corner.
- 1:27:41Boom, tractor got stuck by him.
- 1:27:43I got stuck twice behind the final destination Tractors.
- 1:27:48Ah.
- 1:27:49Or trailers with like these wood piles.
- 1:27:51And it wasn't like final destination with the big long beams.
- 1:27:54No, this was, they had chopped it up in the nice little pieces and then
- 1:27:57somehow, as we had plenty of time to watch this and I'm sitting and going,
- 1:28:01my God, don't let a piece come off bounce and come through the windshield
- 1:28:04because I don't wanna pay for this.
- 1:28:05They had somehow strategically stacked all these in this beautiful stack that
- 1:28:10like mounded, like a pyramid up out of the back of the, of the tractor
- 1:28:14trailer, nothing securing anything down.
- 1:28:16I'm like, how the hell are these pieces of wood?
- 1:28:18Just, they weren't tied down.
- 1:28:20No gravity.
- 1:28:20Gravity holding.
- 1:28:21No, they were just sitting there magically not, and I was,
- 1:28:25and I was like hyperfocused.
- 1:28:27I was just staring at the wood waiting for one to wobble.
- 1:28:29You were on a hill too.
- 1:28:30I was far back and not a single one move.
- 1:28:34I was like, okay.
- 1:28:35The tree sap was holding them together.
- 1:28:37That's what was going on there.
- 1:28:38Back to your passengers.
- 1:28:39Okay, so I gotta put this in reference.
- 1:28:41We've talked about this before.
- 1:28:42The roads over there are narrow, you know, you talk about mountain roads in the us
- 1:28:47you're gonna drive up into the Rockies or the Appalachians or something like that.
- 1:28:51It's a two lane road.
- 1:28:52Like you drive tail of the dragon.
- 1:28:53It's a two lane road.
- 1:28:54Yeah.
- 1:28:54You go to Italy, you cut that in half, and then in some places you cut it.
- 1:28:58And half again.
- 1:29:00So you're driving on a one lane road basically at one point, I'm following you.
- 1:29:04I think it was when we were going down the mountain to go to that pizza place
- 1:29:07or whatever, which by the way, my kids got totally sick of pasta pizza pane,
- 1:29:11which is bread and prosciutto by the end of it, they don't wanna, they don't
- 1:29:13wanna hear, eat, or see any of it.
- 1:29:14At this point.
- 1:29:16It's gonna be a while, but, so anyway, we go to this pizzeria and I'm following
- 1:29:19Tanya down and I'm doing everything I can to like not be on top of her.
- 1:29:25As you probably noticed.
- 1:29:26I'm literally riding the brakes and my wife's like, why
- 1:29:28are you being so aggressive?
- 1:29:29And I'm like, I'm not.
- 1:29:31I was just going.
- 1:29:32Normal for my car.
- 1:29:34Literally the weight of this behemoth is pulling it down the mountain.
- 1:29:37Like I'm just doing everything I can to just maintain any sort of distance.
- 1:29:42And I wasn't going.
- 1:29:43I had gone down faster on other trips with just me and mom
- 1:29:48and not anything super fast.
- 1:29:50But I definitely driven faster than that.
- 1:29:52But here's the deal, you got a big heavy car with teeny little breaks.
- 1:29:55Yeah.
- 1:29:56Coming down a mountain, you know what you're gonna do If you ride 'em
- 1:29:58all the way down, you're not gonna have any by the time you're done.
- 1:30:01So you gotta play this game of, I gotta take this corner, I gotta scrub
- 1:30:05off some speed, I gotta let it kind of just do its thing or, or whatever.
- 1:30:08And the roads are not smooth.
- 1:30:10They're not bumpy, but they're literally like if there was a boulder, they paved
- 1:30:14over the boulder and now that is, it's like a, a mogul when you're skiing, right?
- 1:30:18So it's just part of the landscape of the road.
- 1:30:20So the whole car is like jostling as you're coming down.
- 1:30:22And it's like being in Baja, right?
- 1:30:24My girls are used to taking off ramp, whatever it is, you
- 1:30:28know, they don't really care.
- 1:30:29But 200 turns later down the mountain, 'cause that's what it ends up being,
- 1:30:33they're turning green in the back.
- 1:30:35And even my wife is like, Jesus, is this roller coaster ever going to end?
- 1:30:39Because you know, it's been a long time and we'd only gone up and down that
- 1:30:41road one time 10 years ago, her and I.
- 1:30:44So she's forgotten what it's like.
- 1:30:46And I'm like, for me, I'm like, oh.
- 1:30:47Paradise, right?
- 1:30:48This is autocross, there's heaven.
- 1:30:49But it was just everything I could do to keep people from getting
- 1:30:52the barf bags out in the car.
- 1:30:54But again, I didn't think we were driving that hard, you know?
- 1:30:58Anyway, the Nissan, that one stretch of highway that we did, or that
- 1:31:02section there, that's from like Bartos back to the mountains or whatever.
- 1:31:05I got around that one guy.
- 1:31:06I lost you.
- 1:31:07It was like, I could tell we both pulled out and I had the torque.
- 1:31:10I was gone.
- 1:31:10It was, yeah, I was unprepared to make a pass.
- 1:31:15I was like, oh, I got double the horsepower.
- 1:31:17I'll see you later.
- 1:31:18That being said, somewhere along the trip though, in our quash qua
- 1:31:22legendary Nissan product related to the R 32, in some way or another, we
- 1:31:27picked up a rock on the windshield.
- 1:31:29Oh, oh, yeah.
- 1:31:30And it continued to grow.
- 1:31:32It continued to get worse.
- 1:31:33I mean, we broke the windshield.
- 1:31:34I mean, it wasn't my fault.
- 1:31:35It came from something.
- 1:31:37So during the trip, the midway point, we were somewhere in Sienna.
- 1:31:40My wife finds.
- 1:31:42Loctite super glue.
- 1:31:43So we glued the windshield to try to keep it from cracking.
- 1:31:46And the only time it did it it, you remember when we were all there
- 1:31:49together, Tanya, I told you the windshield was busted or whatever.
- 1:31:51So it stopped.
- 1:31:52The only other time it expanded was when the car sat in direct sun
- 1:31:57and then suddenly like it just kept cracking and then we would glue
- 1:31:59it some more and it would stop and we'd try to park it in the shade.
- 1:32:02But even going down the mountain, all that stuff, I was figuring, man, it's
- 1:32:05gonna twist because this thing is a flexible flyer and it's just gonna break
- 1:32:09the windshield the rest of the way.
- 1:32:10But it didn't do anything.
- 1:32:11I mean the super glue held up I guess.
- 1:32:13So we'll see if Enterprise sends me a bill.
- 1:32:14I did buy the insurance, so I think we're okay man.
- 1:32:17I was so went, we drove down to CNA and for me that was
- 1:32:21a three hour one way drive.
- 1:32:24It was 30 minutes.
- 1:32:26So this is like the midpoint of the trip almost for me, I guess.
- 1:32:29So I've already had the car for five days or something, 30 minutes
- 1:32:33from arriving at the destination.
- 1:32:34I notice all the sudden like there's a little light on in
- 1:32:37the dashboard and it's this.
- 1:32:38Orange wrench, symbol.
- 1:32:40And I was like, I don't know the F. That means that can't be good.
- 1:32:44I'm like, well, I'm not gonna say anything.
- 1:32:46Just gonna keep going.
- 1:32:48Just gonna keep going.
- 1:32:50Well, all this talk now going on in regards about rental cars.
- 1:32:53You're saying about getting a bill, is it Hertz?
- 1:32:56They're installing those AI scanners now.
- 1:32:59That's who I rented with.
- 1:33:00Yeah.
- 1:33:01People are getting clipped big time.
- 1:33:02They're creating a lot of headaches.
- 1:33:04Speaking of that, 'cause I did rent with Hertz and my orange.
- 1:33:07I looked it up on the wonderful interweb, so the orange wrench symbol, which I was
- 1:33:10hoping can't be the check engine light.
- 1:33:12This must be like a service symbol and, and according to the
- 1:33:15internets, that's what it was.
- 1:33:17I guess it was due for an oil change and they didn't say anything to me,
- 1:33:20anything to me when I returned it.
- 1:33:21You exceeded the maximum number of shifts in a particular period.
- 1:33:26Transmission fluid needs flushing.
- 1:33:29No, so when I picked it up from the rental, I did the walk around and
- 1:33:32all that stuff and then did little bullshit piece of paper they gave
- 1:33:36me with some chicken scratch on it.
- 1:33:37Like I couldn't tell.
- 1:33:38The car actually had like a big scrape on the front bumper and then it had
- 1:33:41a couple other nicks here and there.
- 1:33:43And I'm like, well I couldn't tell that they had it marked, it
- 1:33:46took me like 45 minutes to get the freaking car out of the parking lot
- 1:33:50and get all the, anyway, whatever.
- 1:33:51To your point, it's not quite the AI that does it to themselves, but, and
- 1:33:55they're like, oh, well we emailed you all the pictures of the car.
- 1:33:57I'm like, oh shit.
- 1:33:58Did you, okay, lemme look at that.
- 1:34:00So they have the little scanner thing and they go and it goes and it's
- 1:34:04like this little price checker thing and they take like a photo of it.
- 1:34:07And so then they upload all the photos and then they mark it on the
- 1:34:09paper and then they give it to you when you pick up the car or whatever.
- 1:34:12So you have that record.
- 1:34:13If you found something else, they could add it to that.
- 1:34:16So they give you all the photo documentation.
- 1:34:18Oh, that's from the start.
- 1:34:19And then when I returned it, I purposely, I, I was like, I'm returning the
- 1:34:23car and you know, the light came on the wrench symbol, I think it's the
- 1:34:26maintenance for the oil or whatever.
- 1:34:28And he is like, okay, that's fine.
- 1:34:29He's like, do you want me to email the receipt?
- 1:34:31I was like, do you wanna check the card?
- 1:34:32I, I can, do you wanna wait?
- 1:34:34I'm like, yeah, I'll wait.
- 1:34:35So then he got his little scanner around and he starts walking around it.
- 1:34:40And I made a big deal before I left because based on the scratches
- 1:34:44they had indicated on the car.
- 1:34:46They were like little things.
- 1:34:47I was like, well, here's a little scratch and you didn't write it down.
- 1:34:50And I like made the guy come out and I was like, well, there's this and this.
- 1:34:52And he's like, well, these are too small.
- 1:34:54We're not gonna count 'em.
- 1:34:55It's fine.
- 1:34:55So he didn't record 'em.
- 1:34:57I'm like, okay.
- 1:34:58So then when I returned it, same guy sitting there walking around
- 1:35:00the car and he's like, oh geez.
- 1:35:03Literally doing stuff on something.
- 1:35:05I'm like, there's nothing there.
- 1:35:06What?
- 1:35:06There's like dirt on the car.
- 1:35:08I'm like sitting here going, man, are you gonna find these same
- 1:35:11scratches I pointed out to you before that you didn't record down.
- 1:35:14He's got a little scanner thing.
- 1:35:15Do you know how many times he's charged people for the
- 1:35:17scratches on that citra one?
- 1:35:18That's the racket of all the car rental agencies, but the bigger
- 1:35:22racket outside of the us I think so.
- 1:35:25At the end of the day, they marked it all off.
- 1:35:27It was all good.
- 1:35:27Nothing was wrong with it.
- 1:35:28I'd returned it completely full, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:35:30Everything was fine.
- 1:35:31So paid the bill, got the receipt.
- 1:35:33Hopefully you shouldn't receive any notification from them.
- 1:35:36That is the most frustrating thing outside of the United States to rent a car
- 1:35:40because they don't hold us strapped like they do in Europe, in the United States.
- 1:35:46It's very clear.
- 1:35:47They're like, oh, if it's smaller than a quarter, we don't care.
- 1:35:49Don't about it.
- 1:35:50No big deal.
- 1:35:50Don't worry.
- 1:35:51But it's much more loose.
- 1:35:52But over there it's like, oh, there's like an eyelash length scratch there.
- 1:35:56I'm gonna bark you down and charge you $200, but I'm not gonna fix it.
- 1:35:59So I'm just collecting money to your point, like every time there's
- 1:36:01a new thing, I've heard horror stories about that and at least
- 1:36:04you got some customer service.
- 1:36:06'cause we run it through enterprise.
- 1:36:07So I took the quash quoi back with its broken windshield and we show up it.
- 1:36:11It was a whole thing to figure out where to take the car.
- 1:36:14'cause we picked it up in one terminal.
- 1:36:15We were supposed to drop it off another terminal, no big deal.
- 1:36:17So we do that whole thing and then we get there and the guy had
- 1:36:19warned us when we picked it up.
- 1:36:20The guys that were there when we picked up the car were super nice,
- 1:36:24very just accommodating, whatever.
- 1:36:25And as we know, you know, customer service isn't usually the priority
- 1:36:29in, in Europe as William and I discovered even in France.
- 1:36:31So we get back in the morning, we drop the car off.
- 1:36:3510 minutes before Enterprise is supposed to be open.
- 1:36:37And the guy had told us, look, if there's nobody there, put the keys
- 1:36:40in the Dropbox and go about your business and don't worry about it.
- 1:36:42I said, okay, cool.
- 1:36:43I'm looking around where the hell's the Dropbox?
- 1:36:46'cause in America the Dropbox is at the little toll booth thing where the
- 1:36:49people usually sit with their scanners, like Tanya's talking about you put
- 1:36:52the keys in the box and you drag your luggage and you go about your merry way.
- 1:36:55Instead, we had to wander all around terminal to uh, Mel Paya to go figure
- 1:37:01out where the hell enterprise was.
- 1:37:03And it was like way out of our way and we're like, we gotta go catch this
- 1:37:06flight, but I gotta return the keys.
- 1:37:08I could have possibly waited in the garage for the guy that was gonna show
- 1:37:11up at nine o'clock in the morning.
- 1:37:12'cause just 'cause they say they're open at seven doesn't
- 1:37:14mean they're actually open.
- 1:37:15So I finally get there.
- 1:37:16There is a woman at the enterprise counter and I walk up and she
- 1:37:19goes, we're not open, we are open.
- 1:37:2011 2, 11 10. God bless it.
- 1:37:23It's like two minutes before you open.
- 1:37:25What time was that?
- 1:37:25This is like, I don't know, seven in the morning or something like, okay.
- 1:37:28Or eight in the morning or whatever it was.
- 1:37:30And I'm like, I'm getting flashbacks of like the post office and the DMV.
- 1:37:33Like it immediately my blood pressure is starting to build, right?
- 1:37:36And I'm holding up the keys and I'm like, I need to return the keys.
- 1:37:40And she's like, oh.
- 1:37:41And I'm like, hand her the keys.
- 1:37:42And then she kinda looks at me like a deer in the headlights.
- 1:37:45And I said, I also want to report damage to the vehicle.
- 1:37:48If you have a problem, you can telephone four zero seven.
- 1:37:54Go.
- 1:37:55Ah, fun.
- 1:37:56Cool.
- 1:37:57You want to speak to the manager?
- 1:37:58Okay.
- 1:37:59No, you don't understand.
- 1:38:00I bought the insurance.
- 1:38:01I'm letting you know the windshield is broken.
- 1:38:03It got hit by a rock.
- 1:38:04We have three levels of insurance.
- 1:38:06All the three levels they cover nothing.
- 1:38:09But I don't have your ticket in front of me, so I don't know
- 1:38:10that you bought the insurance.
- 1:38:11I, I'm telling you, I bought the insurance.
- 1:38:14Why you want the contract?
- 1:38:15Okay.
- 1:38:15I go get to the contract now, but I wanna let you know that the windshield is broken
- 1:38:20so you can put a note in and blah, blah.
- 1:38:23And she was just like, if you don't know, it is not my problem.
- 1:38:26It's lunch.
- 1:38:26Ah, ah.
- 1:38:28The whole thing was irritating.
- 1:38:29Yeah, you're trying to do the right thing.
- 1:38:31Yeah.
- 1:38:31By let them know.
- 1:38:32So, but then, well I will say the people it hurts.
- 1:38:35Were quite nice.
- 1:38:37The people in enterprise were great until I returned the car.
- 1:38:40I went back into their office like literally three or four times and
- 1:38:44every time they were like super.
- 1:38:45Okay,
- 1:38:49well anyway, the Italy trip isn't all about rental cars.
- 1:38:52There was some car stuff in this.
- 1:38:53Yeah, you gotta see some really cool stuff for you William.
- 1:38:56I went on your behalf.
- 1:38:58You visited the Ferrari museum.
- 1:38:59Am Ello vicariously through me.
- 1:39:02Yes.
- 1:39:02I will say if you get a chance to go, go, I would also say go to the other one.
- 1:39:07'cause there's two.
- 1:39:08Yes.
- 1:39:08The other one is more motorsports focused.
- 1:39:10The only problem I have with going to the Ferrari Museum of
- 1:39:13Ello is it Ello is a hellhole.
- 1:39:14There's no parking people everywhere.
- 1:39:17There's the Ferrari experience thing where they're driving off to Fiorano, like you
- 1:39:20can rent a 2 96 or a F eight or whatever.
- 1:39:23Like they all have different cars.
- 1:39:24And then you go with a driver and you're driving the car and you go
- 1:39:27off to Fiorano and you can go do laps of the track and it's just chaos.
- 1:39:30It's Italy in a nutshell, right?
- 1:39:32But you drive down there and you think you're driving through Hollywood
- 1:39:36where there's just buildings.
- 1:39:37It's very industrial, there's a lot of factories.
- 1:39:40It's not that nice.
- 1:39:41Lots of cool stuff once you get there.
- 1:39:43So inside the museum, again, one of the few places that has air
- 1:39:46conditioning in Italy, you get in there, you know it's hot outside.
- 1:39:49They kind of gate keep you in terms of coming in.
- 1:39:51But once you come in, the experience is cool.
- 1:39:53I expected slightly more cars than there were.
- 1:39:56There are not many.
- 1:39:57Yeah, no, but it's kind of cool.
- 1:39:58It's like a whole evolution thing, right?
- 1:40:00Obviously there's the superstars that are in there.
- 1:40:02You've got the 2 88 GTO, you got an F 40, you got a LA Ferrari, everything
- 1:40:06you expect to be there, Schumacher's, formula one car, all this kind of stuff.
- 1:40:09So it's cheap.
- 1:40:10It's worth going.
- 1:40:11You can actually buy a pass.
- 1:40:13I don't think it matters which of the two museums you go to first,
- 1:40:16but you can actually buy a pass that lets you go to both of them.
- 1:40:19So you just drive to the other one and then go check out what's over there.
- 1:40:21It's one museum split into two locations and then Fiorano ISS right
- 1:40:24there, and you can go check out the track and all that kinda stuff.
- 1:40:26So I posted a bunch of pictures on your website, kind of did a photo dump of a
- 1:40:30lot of the things that were in the museum.
- 1:40:31Again, really cool stuff, totally worth seeing.
- 1:40:34We did a coast to coast sort of trip.
- 1:40:36We drove all the way out to the Adriatic and then we drove all the
- 1:40:38way out to the Mediterranean of this whole loop of North central Italy.
- 1:40:42So along the way we're kind of strategizing.
- 1:40:44My wife was like, oh, we should go to San Marino and check it out,
- 1:40:46because it's one of the little provincial kingdoms into itself.
- 1:40:49You know, sovereign kingdoms that live inside of Italy, sort
- 1:40:52of like the Vatican is its own thing and it's not really Italy.
- 1:40:54And I said, oh, San Marino, that's cool.
- 1:40:56We should go to Amela.
- 1:40:57And she's like, yeah, you wanna go to the track.
- 1:40:58Like last time we went to Italy, we drove past Magie and
- 1:41:02she was like, we should stop.
- 1:41:03But it was like the middle of winter.
- 1:41:04There's no reason to stop in Magie.
- 1:41:05The track's closed.
- 1:41:06It's wintertime like, what are we gonna do?
- 1:41:08I'm like, well go to Amala.
- 1:41:09Right?
- 1:41:09So we go there and secretly with all the work that we've done with the professor
- 1:41:14about Sena and yeah, commemorating his death after 30 years, I was
- 1:41:18like, this is an opportunity to go.
- 1:41:20See the Senate memorial and to go see the track.
- 1:41:22So my girls were sort of dragging their heels a little bit, right?
- 1:41:25And they're like, oh my God, we're gonna go to a racetrack and blah, blah, blah.
- 1:41:28Unlike Mar, which was in the middle of just an industrial park, Mila's sort
- 1:41:34of off the beaten path, it's almost like going to an American race track.
- 1:41:37You get there and there's a fast food joint and a gas station and a couple
- 1:41:41of houses, and there's nobody around.
- 1:41:43But they built the track around this town or the town of Imus.
- 1:41:48Sits in the, it's really bizarre.
- 1:41:49Yeah.
- 1:41:49Like the way it's laid out.
- 1:41:51But when you get there, you realize sort of like Montreal, the track is open.
- 1:41:55You can't get on the track like you can in Montreal, but you can walk
- 1:41:58around it, you can go everywhere.
- 1:42:00And then once you cross under the tunnel, which goes under like start, finish,
- 1:42:04like that area, the track where the grandstands are, you can cut into the
- 1:42:08inside and there's all these parks and like sporting complexes and like all
- 1:42:11this stuff that belongs to the track.
- 1:42:12So there's all these signs that say, you know, Nu Memorial and this
- 1:42:17memorial and that memorial and then the SNA one and like the SNA one's
- 1:42:20like way out there because you walk all the way to Ello, right?
- 1:42:23So you go out there, you go out there, you go out there and
- 1:42:25you keep walking, keep walking.
- 1:42:27I actually had walked past it and I didn't realize, I saw all these banners
- 1:42:30and flags and I'm like, I'm close.
- 1:42:32Like I can see there's a sign that says Sena and it's on the opposite
- 1:42:36wall on the other side of the track.
- 1:42:37And I said, this is the Ella Chicane, I'm here, but like, where's the memorial?
- 1:42:41Right?
- 1:42:41This is really strange.
- 1:42:42So I walk past it, I walk all the way to the gates and there's this guy there, and
- 1:42:46I don't know if he worked at the track or not, but he was super nice older guy.
- 1:42:49And I said, Hey, excuse me, I don't know if I missed it or
- 1:42:52what, but I said, where is.
- 1:42:54The Senate memorial and he's like, oh, if you're looking for the point
- 1:42:57of impact, like where the plaque is and whatever, I'll show you.
- 1:43:00It's actually kind of hard to find.
- 1:43:01So he walks me back and inside of all that mess of t-shirts and flags and flowers
- 1:43:06and just all this stuff that's maintained there, there's this little plaque and it
- 1:43:10looks directly at the point of impact when you look across the track where he hit.
- 1:43:15And so at that moment now you realize you're kind of like in the trees.
- 1:43:19You're up against the guardrail, you're looking at this plaque, you're looking
- 1:43:23out over the track, you're surrounded by all this memorabilia and all this stuff.
- 1:43:26And then there's this statue like in bronze of Sena, sort of almost looking
- 1:43:30like the thinking man, I don't know.
- 1:43:32Maybe it's just me, but there's this overwhelming sense of like,
- 1:43:36I don't know what to call it.
- 1:43:36Like John tried to even explain it in his article that he wrote about when he went
- 1:43:40to go visit and all that, and it just.
- 1:43:42It's weird, it's very emotional and it's very quiet.
- 1:43:44And then you sort of realize in the distance there's a
- 1:43:47park with kids and stuff.
- 1:43:49You know, Sena was big with kids and helping kids and giving money and the
- 1:43:52foundations and all, and it's sort of like, it's just this juxtaposition that
- 1:43:55you're just like, okay, I get it now.
- 1:43:57Like it becomes suddenly becomes very real, his whole legacy and everything.
- 1:44:01And so for me, I don't know, emotional, spiritual moment,
- 1:44:04but it was very worth going.
- 1:44:05And I would say if I had to pick a European track to go watch an F1 race at,
- 1:44:11I don't know, you know, I've never been to Monza, but I think Monza would be cool,
- 1:44:14but I think MLO would be on my list of top places to go check out a Formula One race.
- 1:44:19I just, I like the whole atmosphere.
- 1:44:21I like the whole vibe.
- 1:44:22I like the way it's laid out.
- 1:44:23I, I like the vantage points and everything.
- 1:44:25I think it was pretty cool.
- 1:44:26Yeah, no, definitely.
- 1:44:27I think Italy is one of the, if you go for an F1 race, it's one of the places to go.
- 1:44:30Just, I mean it's de fci.
- 1:44:31I really like that.
- 1:44:32I mean, just, it's supposed to be unbelievable.
- 1:44:34Well, and I tried to do one more thing 'cause on our last day
- 1:44:36we went to go visit my uncle.
- 1:44:37He invited us over for lunch and the day before we were supposed to leave.
- 1:44:41And so he lives.
- 1:44:42Eight miles from the Dara Academy.
- 1:44:45And so they got their whole museum thing there too.
- 1:44:47And I know Tanya's been before and she wrote an article about it
- 1:44:50and took pictures of everything.
- 1:44:51I said, oh, this is my chance.
- 1:44:53I didn't go the last time I was here.
- 1:44:54I wanna check it out.
- 1:44:55We've literally driven by it 16 times.
- 1:44:57'cause it was on the road where our Airbnb was or whatever.
- 1:45:00So I'm like, okay, you know, I want to go check this place out and
- 1:45:03we're looking online and you know, okay, it's open Mondays from this
- 1:45:07time to this time and you know, blah blah, all this kind of stuff.
- 1:45:10And so we get there parking lot's full.
- 1:45:11We're like, that's a good sign.
- 1:45:12You know, find a parking spot, walk around close due to like renovations or whatever.
- 1:45:17Like, ah, you gotta be kidding me.
- 1:45:21I took a picture in front of the de la you know, the same way Tanya did.
- 1:45:24I stood behind it instead of in front of it.
- 1:45:25And, and now I realize, I was like, how far back were you to take that picture?
- 1:45:29Because it's right up against the road.
- 1:45:31I mean, you know, that kind of thing.
- 1:45:32Tanya, if you want, because you've been there, you wanna describe what the De La
- 1:45:35Academy Museum is sort of like, I mean, when you first walk in, there's like
- 1:45:38all these placards that kind of take you through the history of De La and it's all
- 1:45:42the chassis work with the, the Indy cars and even Formula cars and all that stuff.
- 1:45:47Are they still building those road cars?
- 1:45:48They're, I know they don't sell 'em here.
- 1:45:50Are they still building those for Europe?
- 1:45:51I think so, yeah.
- 1:45:52But then they have a bunch of other race cars that they were involved with.
- 1:45:56They're all on display basically.
- 1:45:58And it's, it's a weird building inside that kind of, almost
- 1:46:00has this like circular ramp.
- 1:46:02And then there's, I think there different rooms and there's
- 1:46:04Lamborghinis and there's.
- 1:46:06Barons and you know, a whole bunch of stuff.
- 1:46:08Well, the one thing I saw in the window that I thought was pretty
- 1:46:11cool, kind of ogling from the outside.
- 1:46:12Not that I didn't see it in person.
- 1:46:13The garage 56 car is in the Delara Academy.
- 1:46:16Well, that's new.
- 1:46:17It's sitting up in the Oh, interesting.
- 1:46:18In the glass.
- 1:46:18It's the car furthest back.
- 1:46:20I mean, honestly, I'd have to go back and even read my own
- 1:46:22article to see what was there.
- 1:46:24It's been a decade.
- 1:46:27The adventures didn't stop there.
- 1:46:28William, you set off for Miami.
- 1:46:30What was going on in Miami?
- 1:46:32I land and my flight's coming back from Chicago is delayed two and a half hours.
- 1:46:37Lovely.
- 1:46:37United again.
- 1:46:38So when I finally get back here, phone turns on and I get a text message.
- 1:46:43From our good friend Mr. David Beatie from Slot Mod.
- 1:46:46He goes, well what are you doing next week?
- 1:46:48I, I don't have anything.
- 1:46:48He goes, he goes, I'm going to Miami, can you come with me?
- 1:46:51Yeah, sure.
- 1:46:51And I'm like, what's going on?
- 1:46:53And he tells me that he's, you know, hooked up to go to Barry
- 1:46:56Konik collection 'cause Barry's interested in buying a track from him.
- 1:46:59Barry's very public in regards to his collection.
- 1:47:01Like that.
- 1:47:02Super nice guy.
- 1:47:03Unbelievable cars, unbelievable artwork.
- 1:47:05You know, we were with him for a couple hours, you know, he's got a real keen
- 1:47:08eye for art and it's really cool stuff.
- 1:47:10It's not kinda your basic, just boring stuff.
- 1:47:12And he finds these guys like on Instagram or street artists, stuff like that.
- 1:47:16So it's really cool stuff.
- 1:47:17So I was really neat to see.
- 1:47:18'cause I mean he just got a crazy collection of cars and when he
- 1:47:21first started getting into car stuff, he was into the muscle cars,
- 1:47:24you know, the chopped cars like 49 Mercks and that kind of stuff.
- 1:47:27Which he has some there.
- 1:47:28But then obviously grew into what he has now is Daytona sp threes, you know,
- 1:47:32he is got his A MG ones coming, he's got a cones, a lot of high class stuff.
- 1:47:36But that was neat.
- 1:47:36But in talking with Dave before we left, he wanted to try
- 1:47:40and fill in some more time.
- 1:47:42One was about going to Curated.
- 1:47:43I know those guys well.
- 1:47:44So I said, well that's not a problem you forever I go.
- 1:47:46But I don't know if Herschel or John would be there.
- 1:47:48'cause you know, Dave just kind of wanted to meet him, networking, stuff like that.
- 1:47:51But the other one was garage 26.
- 1:47:54I had never heard of them.
- 1:47:55He sent me their Instagram page.
- 1:47:56But there's a few things on there.
- 1:47:57You do a little research, find out father son duo real estate and everything.
- 1:48:01The son, Tommy, he runs in Ferrari Challenge, that kind stuff.
- 1:48:04So he's trying to get a hold of someone to find out how we go in there.
- 1:48:07He's not have much luck and he knows Adrian Fernandez very well.
- 1:48:10I he's, so Eric, you just interviewed Adrian.
- 1:48:12When's listening?
- 1:48:13Go listen to that episode.
- 1:48:14Awesome.
- 1:48:15I was, I was digging around.
- 1:48:16I noticed there's a little blurb in there about Adrian's office and that is in the
- 1:48:21same building as his garage 26 and it kind of throws you off 'cause you're like, you
- 1:48:25know, Adrian's on the fourth floor and hey, they're on the fifth, blah, blah.
- 1:48:28I'm like, okay.
- 1:48:28He reaches out to Adrian.
- 1:48:30Lo and behold, Adrian's part of that whole thing.
- 1:48:32So it's like boom, there's our entry.
- 1:48:34And so after we go to Skolnik, we go over there and we meet Adrian's nephew, jp.
- 1:48:40Awesome dude.
- 1:48:41Super nice.
- 1:48:42He does these cool things.
- 1:48:43I was trying to get some more details outta my, anyways, we go to the
- 1:48:46building five stories high, right then.
- 1:48:48Tesla dealership First street forwards.
- 1:48:50Well, you go into where the parking lot's at, so you got
- 1:48:52your service doors and like that.
- 1:48:53Well, then there's these little, maybe I'd say six foot wide red door
- 1:48:59entryway and it's for Gable's Auto Vault as it that was being called.
- 1:49:02And you look through there, you can see this bank door and like that.
- 1:49:05And to the right of it, maybe about 15 feet, there's these two
- 1:49:08double glass garage doors that you look through when they open up.
- 1:49:12Then there's two car elevator doors.
- 1:49:14They're like, okay, this has gotta be it.
- 1:49:16Initially this whole building was supposed to be like a private garage
- 1:49:20type deal for owners and stuff like that.
- 1:49:21Display the cars.
- 1:49:22Well, when they did it, Tesla approached 'em.
- 1:49:25I guess, you know, obviously the dollar talks.
- 1:49:27So Tesla's got the first three floors.
- 1:49:29So we go up to the fifth floor.
- 1:49:30That's the first one.
- 1:49:30This is garage 26.
- 1:49:31There's the whole floor doors open up.
- 1:49:33As soon as it opens up, you step out.
- 1:49:35There's a hallway, there's a mannequin right here that's a cop.
- 1:49:38Whatever that looks so realistic, you swear it's a person,
- 1:49:40it kind of throws you off.
- 1:49:41The elevator door opens, you look straight ahead.
- 1:49:43There is a 2003 Ferrari F1 Michael Schumacher a Ferrari 3 33 SP F 40 LM a pi.
- 1:49:52So I mean, just those four cars there you see alone the lms.
- 1:49:559 million, 10 million, maybe 3, 3, 3 sps probably five, 6 million.
- 1:49:59Now maybe even a little bit more.
- 1:50:01God knows what you're gonna put a price on uh, X shoe marker, F1 car.
- 1:50:04But then you step out and it's a hallway.
- 1:50:06'cause these are all glass doors and these things are behind the garage doors.
- 1:50:09They're all glass, real nice marble floors and that.
- 1:50:11So you gotta a real wide hallways going down.
- 1:50:14You know, as you scan on there, you know, there's this model sitting here.
- 1:50:17They got a wire frame of an F1 car's hanging a wall,
- 1:50:19but all you see is Ferrari.
- 1:50:21Ferrari, Ferrari.
- 1:50:21You go, then you pan 'em the other way.
- 1:50:23Just Ferrari, Ferrari, Ferrari.
- 1:50:24Everywhere that I can see.
- 1:50:26You wanna talk about me being in heaven, open up the doors, everything like that.
- 1:50:29And so that was the plan was, is you could buy these units depending
- 1:50:32on size and whatnot, you know, you stash your collection there.
- 1:50:34So like I said, SP one, sp two sp threes F 42 8 8 GTO La Ferrari a
- 1:50:4012 comps, the creme de la creme.
- 1:50:42The cars that are impossible to get.
- 1:50:44People want, like there's multiples.
- 1:50:46And then you go down little other side, there's a 9 6 2 Porsche, you
- 1:50:50know, you got some Porsches and stuff.
- 1:50:51Unbelievable stuff.
- 1:50:52JP is like opening the doors.
- 1:50:53Oh, let's go in here.
- 1:50:54I mean, wide open, you can check everything out.
- 1:50:56It's got, it's hanging out there.
- 1:50:58It's got a bar, two story area, nice glass, I mean gorgeous.
- 1:51:01You go around, it's got your little seating area and stuff like that.
- 1:51:03But another thing, you go up the flight of stairs to the roof, there's still an
- 1:51:07indoor area there where there's a, a loft.
- 1:51:08The simulator that they have is an actual tub from a 4 8 8 race car.
- 1:51:14Wow.
- 1:51:15So they took off the front, they took off the back end.
- 1:51:17It's the actual tub is the air jacks, I mean.
- 1:51:19Unbelievable.
- 1:51:20Then it's got a beautiful outside deck, everything like that.
- 1:51:22So then we go down to the fourth floor and that's where Adrian's office is at.
- 1:51:26But then you have smaller units, you know, still all the
- 1:51:29glass doors, everyth like that.
- 1:51:30But these are ones where some owners got smaller space.
- 1:51:32Like one guy's just got two cars in there.
- 1:51:34He is got a 12 company, a 12 TDF.
- 1:51:36Other side guys have got a rough CTR, all this.
- 1:51:38I mean just again mind-bending stuff.
- 1:51:41But Adrian's unit was super cool 'cause it's his office and everything.
- 1:51:45So you go in there at the end, he is got a new 3 5 6 that he bought.
- 1:51:48He's got one of his old Indy cars that's on display engine
- 1:51:51lids off everyth like that.
- 1:51:52I mean fully functional, the whole thing.
- 1:51:54He's, he's got one hanging on the wall too, right?
- 1:51:56Yeah.
- 1:51:56And he's got one that does over here hanging on the wall.
- 1:51:59And then he is got all his trophies, race suits, all his old helmets.
- 1:52:02And then on the one end he's got the track he bought from Dave.
- 1:52:05It's very minimalistic, I guess you could say.
- 1:52:07You know, it's not like the, some of the ones where he is got all
- 1:52:09the trees and all this stuff.
- 1:52:10It's very sleek and fits in perfectly with the decor.
- 1:52:14I mean, it's just dead nuts on.
- 1:52:15Then you know, you go up, he's got a little office area, he is got a
- 1:52:17seating area, he is got a track, he's got a couple, you know, simulators.
- 1:52:20I mean you wanna talk about presentation and just mind blowing way to have
- 1:52:25your vehicle stored, displayed.
- 1:52:26I mean, this is like another level.
- 1:52:29Unbelievable.
- 1:52:30The quality of the cars that were in this, not just in the garage 26.
- 1:52:35'cause that was just unbelievable.
- 1:52:36But the other units too is, and then the elevators, I posted a quick video
- 1:52:40of it 'cause it's like you're going in the bat cave, like, oh my God.
- 1:52:42Check out those cars.
- 1:52:43You, it's going.
- 1:52:44Then when it goes down, it opens back up.
- 1:52:45You're like, oh my God, look at these cars.
- 1:52:47Me and Dave were both just absolutely blown away.
- 1:52:51The cars that were in these collections, and again, JP was.
- 1:52:54Awesome.
- 1:52:55I mean, just Awesome, awesome dude.
- 1:52:57I can't say enough about him when you finally get through the backlog of editing
- 1:53:00all your videos and stuff, I look forward to seeing 'em up on YouTube, but also,
- 1:53:04you know, maybe we'll see some of these garages and private collections showing
- 1:53:07up on Garage Top Magazine as well.
- 1:53:08Some of the photos that you took.
- 1:53:09So we'll keep everybody up to speed on where you are with all
- 1:53:13your travels and everything.
- 1:53:14But I mean, I can't wait to look at all the pictures.
- 1:53:16It's pretty awesome.
- 1:53:17I, I still have one more video to, I gotta do all the paddock one or the grid walk
- 1:53:20for Lamont, then I'm gonna do those ones.
- 1:53:22But it's some really cool stuff and I, and again, to Barry as well, and
- 1:53:26I mean, oh, do whatever you want.
- 1:53:27Take as many video, you know, I mean, just have at it.
- 1:53:30And I was trying to get a Barry's getting fo of some of the stuff
- 1:53:33that you really don't see.
- 1:53:34'cause you know, a lot of people just take this stuff that everyone sees.
- 1:53:37Very rare that someone gets that access to Garage 26.
- 1:53:40So I think people should definitely see that because it's not something that, oh,
- 1:53:44everyone can go in or just say, give a call or something like the Stars aligned
- 1:53:47and days of relationship with Adrian and Goddess in and everything like that.
- 1:53:51'cause again, and Adrian was the same way.
- 1:53:52I mean, I didn't get to meet him.
- 1:53:53He was out of town or something, but he was like very a comedy, you know, telling
- 1:53:56David, well get ahold of my nephew.
- 1:53:57Oh he'll get, you know, and everyth like that.
- 1:53:58So great people definitely check him out.
- 1:54:00You'll be amazed at what you see.
- 1:54:02William, it's been an adventure.
- 1:54:04It's been a lot of fun.
- 1:54:05I know by the time this airs, you'll have already closed out rocks and
- 1:54:09revs and all that kind of, the merry ground is coming to an end here.
- 1:54:13Any projections, things you want to take off the bucket list for
- 1:54:16maybe next year, the year after?
- 1:54:17What are you thinking?
- 1:54:18Goodwood, that was the one thing too, is like if I was able to figure it out.
- 1:54:22Perfect.
- 1:54:23'cause Goodwood is the following weekend after head up North and do it.
- 1:54:26I mean, that would be outstanding to that.
- 1:54:27I mean, it wouldn't be a cheap trip, but you're already over in Europe.
- 1:54:30Might as well just, hey, just spend a few more days and go up north.
- 1:54:33But Goodwood would be the one to go to.
- 1:54:35But I would definitely do the revival.
- 1:54:37I wouldn't do the hill climb.
- 1:54:38Yeah.
- 1:54:39'cause I mean, they're just driving up this driveway that wouldn't always, I
- 1:54:42kind of scratched my head it as like, I mean, yeah, they do a lot of, you know,
- 1:54:45launches and that kind of cool stuff, but, eh, I, I wanna see 'em go on the track.
- 1:54:48So I, I'd go, I'd love to go to the revival.
- 1:54:50I think we might be tainted though, because if we go to the revival Yeah.
- 1:54:53And we're gonna be comparing it to Lama Classic Disappointed and then
- 1:54:57it's like, well why do we do this?
- 1:54:58We'll just do classic again.
- 1:54:59Which is nice because classic they've announced starting this year, it's
- 1:55:03gonna be every year instead of like whenever they feel like it kind
- 1:55:06of thing or what they were doing.
- 1:55:07So it's cool to see.
- 1:55:08Classic has got some legs underneath of it, so there'll be an opportunity
- 1:55:11to go back and I kind of like that.
- 1:55:13Right.
- 1:55:13Go to the big lama like the next.
- 1:55:15Hundredth.
- 1:55:16Yeah, the actual hundredth.
- 1:55:17Hundredth running, you know, is the next big one, but the
- 1:55:19rest of the Lamont 24 hours.
- 1:55:20You watch it on TV and that's great, but classic, again, it's just got that vibe.
- 1:55:24It's got that feel.
- 1:55:25It's a time machine.
- 1:55:26There's something awesome about it.
- 1:55:27Well, especially now going to it once, getting the lay of the land,
- 1:55:30understand things get, okay, this is how they're doing stuff now.
- 1:55:34You can really attack it in regards to what you'd wanna accomplish.
- 1:55:37Kind of know the ins and outs.
- 1:55:38That would definitely be something to go back to, would be that.
- 1:55:41I mean, it's well worth it.
- 1:55:42Everyone I've talked to, I said, buckle this thing.
- 1:55:44If you ever get the chance, you have to go do it.
- 1:55:46You have to figure out some way to go do it.
- 1:55:48Well, it looks like we took over the whole episode with our adventures.
- 1:55:52Seems like it.
- 1:55:53Since Brad isn't here.
- 1:55:54We'll kind of reconvene our normal news next month.
- 1:55:58We got all the lots of cool stuff that in essence of time we will cover next time.
- 1:56:02But there's a couple things I do want to add that are part
- 1:56:05of our European adventures.
- 1:56:06I did, I found a lost and found for you, Tanya, when we were at Lamont.
- 1:56:09Do you remember this one?
- 1:56:10William?
- 1:56:10You can buy an R 18 Audi l and p one car.
- 1:56:13Yes you can.
- 1:56:14It's for sale.
- 1:56:15Don't ask.
- 1:56:15With the low, low prices though, low, low price of a million dollars
- 1:56:18somewhere in that neighborhood.
- 1:56:19Yeah.
- 1:56:19They were making sure it was in tip top shape.
- 1:56:21I love the for sale sign official Audi for sale sign on that R 18.
- 1:56:25I mean, it is diesel powered.
- 1:56:26It can't be worth that much, that clean diesel, you know, that kind of thing.
- 1:56:30Okay.
- 1:56:30What you gonna pay for it then?
- 1:56:31You're gonna pay 10 times that much every year trying to operate it again.
- 1:56:34It is just a situation where, okay, you actually will have the
- 1:56:36car in your possession then do you They fly the text in or no audio.
- 1:56:40Keep it.
- 1:56:40You own it, but it's gonna stay at Audi then whenever you wanna drive with it.
- 1:56:44Uh, no.
- 1:56:44That's a Ferrari thing.
- 1:56:45Don't be confused.
- 1:56:46Yeah.
- 1:56:48If I own something, I want it in my possession.
- 1:56:51So, jumping ahead.
- 1:56:52We do have an uncool wall nominee this month and this comes straight
- 1:56:55outta Italy, but it's French.
- 1:56:57Mind you, I saw plenty of ugly cars while I was over there,
- 1:56:59but this one took the cake.
- 1:57:01We were walking down the one of the roads.
- 1:57:03In S Mione, which is on the lakes up in Italy.
- 1:57:07My whole family stopped and was like, what the heck is this thing?
- 1:57:10So I present for your consideration, the EO 1007 and it's sliding doors.
- 1:57:16Oh wow.
- 1:57:17That's interesting.
- 1:57:19They don't ride the brakes much.
- 1:57:21Look at the there, this little bit of brake dust on those front wheels.
- 1:57:23Ah, I mean, can you imagine having a two-door car and the doors slide and
- 1:57:28obviously that tells you the parking over there in regards to how people
- 1:57:32probably park next to each other.
- 1:57:33Right?
- 1:57:33There's not a car without a door done.
- 1:57:35Yeah, the interior looked like a handicap shower, so you know, you can imagine.
- 1:57:40But the whole thing, it just was like, I don't know, it was so bizarre.
- 1:57:44It's the most bizarre car I've seen in a long time.
- 1:57:47But like what possesses a designer to say, you know what?
- 1:57:50We're gonna make it two doors and it's gonna be the shape of a
- 1:57:52box and we're gonna make the door slide quintessentially French.
- 1:57:55The person colorblind that bought this, I mean, why would you buy that colored boot?
- 1:57:58This is that metallic mustard copper stuff that they like.
- 1:58:02I don't, Ugh.
- 1:58:03It's awful.
- 1:58:04Since you're here, William, and I know you made it part of your summer
- 1:58:07vacation and I'm sure we'll talk more about Formula One in our next episode.
- 1:58:20But I've gotta ask because we joked we made fun of your $10 movie theater.
- 1:58:24Did you go see the F1 movie?
- 1:58:26Hell yes.
- 1:58:27It's awesome.
- 1:58:28Is it, I think it's a, I think it was a fantastic movie.
- 1:58:30I thought it was really good.
- 1:58:31And again, though I can asking, I said this like with Ford verse fire
- 1:58:34and stuff, this is for entertainment.
- 1:58:35It's not trying to nail it down, but they did a hell of a job capturing
- 1:58:40like the speed, the sound, everything.
- 1:58:43I mean, some of the shots that they got were ly.
- 1:58:45'cause I mean you saw when they were filming how immersed they
- 1:58:48were with the actual F1 after races and everything like that.
- 1:58:51Obviously you can clearly tell lots the CGI stuff, this and that.
- 1:58:54Like, oh, that'll never happen.
- 1:58:55So there's a lot of stuff you go like, uh, but you gotta take with a grain of salt.
- 1:58:58It's pure entertainment purposes.
- 1:59:00Most of the racing footage was.
- 1:59:02Literally real racing footage that they went and CGI didn't change the colors of
- 1:59:06the car, so there wasn't, you know, an Alpine or a Red Bull and stuff like that.
- 1:59:10Well, the one cool thing is they go back to, in the eighties when he like got
- 1:59:15into it, they used Martin Donnelly's actual crash video and footage of
- 1:59:19him crashing, lying in the middle of the track, the whole nine yards.
- 1:59:23Wow.
- 1:59:23So it's like that, it's the actual video of it.
- 1:59:25So they used some real stuff in it.
- 1:59:26They kind of cji to make, you know, so it was him in the car driving that
- 1:59:30lotus, but they used a lot of old footage back then, kind of having flashbacks
- 1:59:34and kinda how like he was supposed to be the next big thing just, and it's
- 1:59:37kind of based Martin do never got back into an F1 car, but no spoilers.
- 1:59:42All right, so let me ask this.
- 1:59:43Lemme ask again.
- 1:59:44Brad Pitt, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:59:45It's like Tom Cruise and the rest of 'em, and you talk about the CGI and
- 1:59:48all this cool stuff in my mind, I think that the storyline, the plot,
- 1:59:53the acting, the, oh, it's crap.
- 1:59:54Okay, so it's like Grand Smo then, right?
- 1:59:56Yeah.
- 1:59:57I mean, come on, you go look at the thing.
- 1:59:58Go.
- 1:59:59This would never happen.
- 2:00:00It's a complete joke.
- 2:00:01Oh, come on this guy.
- 2:00:02You're trying to do the math in your head.
- 2:00:04Okay.
- 2:00:04If he was.
- 2:00:05Even 18 or 19 when they're saying he would have to be in the eighties when
- 2:00:09he break, and then what the years now would be, he'd be in his sixties.
- 2:00:13I would never, ever freaking happen.
- 2:00:15It's Alonzo.
- 2:00:16It's just the story of Alonzo.
- 2:00:17That's, it's Brad Pitts.
- 2:00:19All right.
- 2:00:19He's made some good movies, but I mean, every movie he is in he,
- 2:00:22he is the same demeanor, same.
- 2:00:25It's just plug and play and doing it how he acts.
- 2:00:27But I enjoyed it.
- 2:00:29I think it's definitely worth it to go see it.
- 2:00:31We didn't stay for it, but we actually went to the drive-in the other
- 2:00:34night and it was the second movie.
- 2:00:35We went and saw Superman and it was supposed to be the second one, but I was
- 2:00:38like, yeah, I don't feel like staying.
- 2:00:39That's when I'll wait till it comes back out on Apple TV and I'll
- 2:00:41watch it, you know, on my TV again.
- 2:00:43But I thought it was good.
- 2:00:44Speaking of Apple tv, I heard that Apple is bidding for Formula
- 2:00:48One coverage for next year.
- 2:00:49I think they got it.
- 2:00:50Did they really?
- 2:00:51No, I thought Disney did.
- 2:00:53What is the deal with Disney and Formula One?
- 2:00:56Everyone's trying to get on the bandwagon and depending on how long
- 2:00:58they buy the rice for to do it, if they buy it for any more than five
- 2:01:01years, they're gonna be effed because I guarantee in five years the.
- 2:01:05Popularity here in the States is gonna start waning big time.
- 2:01:08It's gonna do that NASCAR thing where NASCAR was boom, boom, boom.
- 2:01:10Yeah.
- 2:01:11You know, same thing's gonna happen here with that.
- 2:01:12What?
- 2:01:12Because everyone's gonna just like, nah, it's the same to your weekend to point.
- 2:01:16We heard a lot of that when we were at Lamont Classic and we
- 2:01:19were talking to other people about other racing disciplines and
- 2:01:21you know, people were surprised.
- 2:01:23200,000 people showing for a vintage event is just ridiculous numbers.
- 2:01:27But you heard the same thing from a lot of people.
- 2:01:29I'm really tired of Formula One.
- 2:01:31The racing's really boring.
- 2:01:33The drama is really fake, blah, blah, you know, the same thing.
- 2:01:35And it, and I know I've been saying this, hearing it from other people,
- 2:01:39unsolicited, you're sort of like, well, I guess I'm not alone on Survivor Island.
- 2:01:44Okay.
- 2:01:44First of all, formula one TV has always been boring.
- 2:01:47I mean, it just doesn't matter what era you pick.
- 2:01:49Kind of like you've always said.
- 2:01:50You watch the beginning, you snooze in the middle.
- 2:01:52You watch the end and it's over.
- 2:01:54But now it's to me more spec racing than it's ever been,
- 2:01:58at least during the S days.
- 2:01:59And Schumacher, the cars were sort of different, you know,
- 2:02:02especially during the Sena days.
- 2:02:03You had the flat 12 Ferraris and the V eight Judds and you know,
- 2:02:07the turbo this and the that.
- 2:02:08And so it was a mixed bag of stuff.
- 2:02:11And then the V 10 era was obviously amazing, but now,
- 2:02:14I don't know, it's just hard.
- 2:02:15And I think the whole COVID is over for a long time now.
- 2:02:18People have gone back to, let's say, quote unquote normal, and Formula One doesn't
- 2:02:22have the same draw because we're not all.
- 2:02:24Stuck at home with nothing else to watch.
- 2:02:25I agree.
- 2:02:26I mean that's why I say, you know, the shine will come off of that
- 2:02:29diamond or everyone I call it, it'll be Shinola when it's done.
- 2:02:32Yeah.
- 2:02:32I especially like the Vegas race of Miamis.
- 2:02:34I'll be amazed at that Miami races last another three or four
- 2:02:37seasons because it's just crap.
- 2:02:39You know, Austin's always gonna be there 'cause you're gonna have that one Austin,
- 2:02:41you know, great tracker like that.
- 2:02:43But, and in Vegas too, I think it's just, I'd rather watch the WEC race at Austin
- 2:02:47than the Formula One race at Austin.
- 2:02:48I, I agree with you on that.
- 2:02:49A thousand percent.
- 2:02:50So, yeah, I mean, and the obscene amount of money that either Disney or Apple,
- 2:02:53whoever ends with is gonna have to pay.
- 2:02:55I mean, Liberty Media is just cash cashing and it would not surprise me within the
- 2:02:58next five years, Liberty Media ends up selling up to the oil rich nations of
- 2:03:02Saudi Arabia, one of those DAE funds, whatever, and just walks away making
- 2:03:06their billions and billions of dollars.
- 2:03:08'cause it's at that point, saturation 24 races.
- 2:03:11I mean, that's just too many.
- 2:03:12I mean that's, and it's total cash grab To close out this thought on
- 2:03:15Formula One, as we sort of wrap out this impromptu bitter sports news.
- 2:03:18I gotta give props to Hulk burg.
- 2:03:20It's taking like 25 years to podium.
- 2:03:22Yes.
- 2:03:23You know, I'm sad to miss that race 'cause that actually looked like it
- 2:03:27was a really good race at Silverstone.
- 2:03:29I watched the highlights, you know, that's why they always wish for rain at
- 2:03:32every race because it evens things out.
- 2:03:35I make everything interesting when it's rain.
- 2:03:37I'll watch the whole race.
- 2:03:38I'm be like, okay, this will be interesting.
- 2:03:39Yeah, I'll watch whole thing if it rains.
- 2:03:52That's it for Motorsport News, but we are gonna rejoin the conversation next
