- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Mark Simone Show on seven to ten.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Wi Ken from Mark Today.
- 0:05Speaker 3: Here's Ken Rosatto.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, good to be with you on Black Friday. Mark
- 0:09Speaker 1: having a nice long weekend. And Roger Friedman is the
- 0:13Speaker 1: brains behind Showbiz four When Money joins us Live with
- 0:16Speaker 1: the hottest in entertainment news, Roger Freeman.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Happy Black Friday, Happy Black Friday. How are you?
- 0:21Speaker 1: I'm good. I'm celebrating with my computer screen open all
- 0:24Speaker 1: right now I could save on this and that, so listen.
- 0:28Speaker 1: So I love Stranger Things, and I see Stranger Things
- 0:31Speaker 1: is back on Netflix. The first four episodes of season five,
- 0:34Speaker 1: the last season just drops. How's it looking to you?
- 0:38Speaker 3: I loved it.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I watched well, I had the press had gotten three
- 0:42Speaker 2: episodes in advance and we weren't allowed to talk about
- 0:46Speaker 2: them until the last minute on Wednesday. But they were terrific.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And then the fourth episode had I watched live on
- 0:54Speaker 2: the network and it was just great. So I think
- 0:59Speaker 2: it's going to be a wonderful final season for them.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Of course, the kids have all grown up, which is
- 1:05Speaker 2: kind of funny because you know they couldn't stay you know,
- 1:10Speaker 2: teenagers forever. They're sort of pretending they're teenagers, but they're
- 1:14Speaker 2: in their twenties now or twenty and above, but you
- 1:18Speaker 2: can sort of suspend your disbelief about that. And the
- 1:22Speaker 2: special effects are insane. They're just fantastic.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Roger, what do you think makes that show so popular?
- 1:28Speaker 1: Is it the nostalgia, the throwback? Why do so many
- 1:32Speaker 1: people love it?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:34Speaker 2: I mean, for me, I have to say it's definitely
- 1:36Speaker 2: the nostalgia. I mean, the whole thing feels like a
- 1:40Speaker 2: Steven Spielberg movie from nineteen eighty two. It feels like
- 1:44Speaker 2: et is sort of completely based on dungeons and dragons, so.
- 1:50Speaker 3: It's all things eighties.
- 1:51Speaker 2: And now they sort of revealed in these four episodes
- 1:55Speaker 2: that maybe the whole show is sort of not based
- 2:00Speaker 2: on but revolves around the children's sci fi book A
- 2:05Speaker 2: Wrinkle in Time. And there's a new young girl.
- 2:09Speaker 3: On the show. She'd been I guess, like a baby
- 2:12Speaker 3: in the other episodes.
- 2:13Speaker 2: And now they've grown her up to be somewhere around
- 2:15Speaker 2: ten or twelve, and she's reading A Wrinkle in Time
- 2:20Speaker 2: and they're discussing characters from it. So if you're into
- 2:24Speaker 2: A Wrinkle in Time, you'll really like Stranger Things this season.
- 2:29Speaker 2: The music is great, very nostalgic. You know, the part
- 2:33Speaker 2: of the show takes place in something called the upside Down.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You know, it's the magical place, you know, sort of
- 2:41Speaker 2: dangerous place with monsters that's under the town of Hawkins.
- 2:45Speaker 2: And so they finally licensed Diana Ross's song upside Down.
- 2:48Speaker 3: I love it and.
- 2:50Speaker 2: So and that's very funny, and the rest of the
- 2:54Speaker 2: music is very is all eighties music, so I think, Yeah,
- 2:57Speaker 2: the nostalgia is a big part of it, and the
- 3:00Speaker 2: effects are terrific, and the characters are very well drawn.
- 3:03Speaker 3: You know each.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Character now, you know exactly what their histories are, what
- 3:06Speaker 2: they're what they're up to. And it's number one on
- 3:10Speaker 2: Netflix absolutely, so.
- 3:12Speaker 1: You could tell the people behind it are having fun.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Can't you just tell that when you want, Like they're
- 3:17Speaker 1: having a bread. Yeah, this is so cool. I love that.
- 3:19Speaker 1: That's and and it's sort of infectious, and I think
- 3:21Speaker 1: that that's also a part of why people love watching it.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You feel like you're part of a club and you're
- 3:25Speaker 1: you're in on on stuff and you can't wait to
- 3:27Speaker 1: see what comes next. At the same time, it's real
- 3:30Speaker 1: really cool.
- 3:30Speaker 2: So you're front of the hell Fire Club, right club
- 3:33Speaker 2: they belong to exactly and and.
- 3:36Speaker 3: So it's interesting.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And of course all the actors in the show have
- 3:41Speaker 2: already started booking things outside of Stranger Things. So we're
- 3:45Speaker 2: going to see all these kids move on to big careers,
- 3:48Speaker 2: I think.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And all of a sudden in their twenties.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and get to act and to be there themselves.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Let me remind everybody this is Roger Friedman from Showbiz
- 3:58Speaker 1: four one one, Ken Risotto Win from Mark seven to ten,
- 4:01Speaker 1: wor and Roger Wicked is cleaning up at the box
- 4:04Speaker 1: office two hundred million bucks for this or through that's
- 4:09Speaker 1: but well done show.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Yeah, well Wicked.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Listen, everybody wanted to It was very smart of Universal
- 4:16Speaker 2: Pictures to break this into two movies, because really, at
- 4:21Speaker 2: one point during the second movie, I was thinking, you know,
- 4:23Speaker 2: this could have been one movie, but they managed to
- 4:27Speaker 2: work it out. The second movie a lot of it
- 4:29Speaker 2: reiterates the Wizard of Oz. See you get to see
- 4:34Speaker 2: the Wizard of Oz from from a different perspective, and
- 4:38Speaker 2: there are no big songs like there were in the
- 4:40Speaker 2: first in.
- 4:42Speaker 3: The first movie.
- 4:44Speaker 2: But the story, you know, gets exciting as they get
- 4:47Speaker 2: to the wrap up of you know.
- 4:49Speaker 3: What's going to happen to all these people. Now.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Of course Universal is saying that they're going to start
- 4:55Speaker 2: having like sequels and prequels, so we're not done with Wicked.
- 4:58Speaker 2: There's going to be uh a lot more stories from
- 5:03Speaker 2: you know Oz.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Uh.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I don't know how that's going to go to write
- 5:09Speaker 2: songs for all.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Those Is it going to be the marvel? The marvel of.
- 5:13Speaker 2: You can tell that that that's what they want, you know.
- 5:19Speaker 2: L Frank Baum, who wrote The Wizard of Oz wrote
- 5:22Speaker 2: other stories. Uh, And so I remember as a kid
- 5:26Speaker 2: reading all the other stories.
- 5:28Speaker 3: They were came out of one of these big hardcover.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Books, and I remember reading the other stories, but they
- 5:34Speaker 2: weren't as memorable. Once once she really did the Wizard
- 5:37Speaker 2: of Oz, that was it, you know. And so they're
- 5:40Speaker 2: going to try to milk it for what they can.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But in the meantime, you know, it's just a massive hit.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean, look, every little girl, please, even adults.
- 5:49Speaker 1: But my little niece who's eight, actually charge she's she
- 5:53Speaker 1: dished at a party the other day and I was Wicked,
- 5:56Speaker 1: so she everybody came in the Wicked thing. It was
- 5:58Speaker 1: so fun. And Zootopia made nice debut, talk about that.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yep, Zootopia came back there. It's their sequel to their
- 6:06Speaker 2: twenty sixteen movies. Some people held on and it's gotten
- 6:10Speaker 2: I haven't seen it. It's gotten great reviews, but it's
- 6:14Speaker 2: also a hit. And then you've got, you know, really
- 6:16Speaker 2: great movies playing at the box office. We still have
- 6:21Speaker 2: one Battle after another which everyone should go and see
- 6:25Speaker 2: if they haven't seen it. It's really that's going to
- 6:27Speaker 2: win the Oscar this year. But there's plenty of other
- 6:30Speaker 2: good films playing, I think at the Paris Theater. Netflix
- 6:34Speaker 2: has a couple of their films playing that are going
- 6:39Speaker 2: to be on Netflix soon but are worth seeing on
- 6:42Speaker 2: a big screen, so Frankenstein in particular. So it's a
- 6:47Speaker 2: very good season from it's a very good season for movies.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm sorry I had to do that every time I
- 6:51Speaker 1: hear Frankenstein.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I know that's what we're saying then too during the
- 6:57Speaker 2: movie you're not saying it, right, But actually this track
- 7:02Speaker 2: of time is so serious and so beautiful to watch.
- 7:05Speaker 3: It's really beautiful. That's totally worth going to see it.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Everything is worth going to see in a theater, and
- 7:13Speaker 2: everything is better seeing it on big screen.
- 7:14Speaker 1: You know, I always listen. I always I remember at
- 7:18Speaker 1: a wedding hear hearing the minister to say, you know
- 7:21Speaker 1: the difference between people just living together and loving each
- 7:24Speaker 1: other or coming to a wedding is the level of
- 7:26Speaker 1: commitment and the joy. You could sit home and have
- 7:28Speaker 1: a dinner, or you could go out to a formal dinner,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and it makes it all the more special. And you're right.
- 7:33Speaker 1: You could sit home and watch it on TV, or
- 7:34Speaker 1: you could go to a theater with other people and
- 7:37Speaker 1: kind of collectively enjoy the scene in the moment. And
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'm with you one hundred percent, just makes it.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Over at the over at the Paris, if you're in Manhattan,
- 7:45Speaker 2: they're showing Jay Kelly the George Clooney movie, which I love,
- 7:51Speaker 2: and also Wake Up dead Man, the Nude Knives Out.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Movie, so that there's plenty to see over there.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Nice and quickly. Here, we've got a bit minute left here.
- 8:01Speaker 1: The is it that the New York Times Bestseller list
- 8:03Speaker 1: doesn't have the cachet at once said because Lewis c
- 8:05Speaker 1: K's first novel ingram number fourteen times.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't understand what's going on with the New
- 8:12Speaker 2: York Times Bestselloist I got this email the other morning
- 8:15Speaker 2: from Lewis ck R people saying we're number fourteen on
- 8:19Speaker 2: the best seller list. I'm like you are, And then
- 8:22Speaker 2: I went on Amazon. On Amazon there are number one
- 8:25Speaker 2: thousand and seven. So I don't know. I wish I
- 8:29Speaker 2: understood how it happened. But listen, you know, Lewis k
- 8:33Speaker 2: is very earnest about this book. He certainly had a
- 8:36Speaker 2: lot of problems being canceled for various things that went on.
- 8:44Speaker 2: He is funny. There's no question about it that he's funny.
- 8:47Speaker 2: He really made Oh now the book is up to
- 8:50Speaker 2: seven hundred and sixty on Amazon.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Well that's because you're talking about it as we're talking
- 8:57Speaker 1: about it.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Seems like a far clive from number four on the
- 9:00Speaker 2: New York Times.
- 9:02Speaker 3: I don't know how the I don't know what a
- 9:04Speaker 3: Slight of Magic is going on.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Wait, at the end of this interview, it's going to
- 9:07Speaker 1: be at number two.
- 9:08Speaker 2: You it might be at number seven thirty, I thinks.
- 9:13Speaker 3: But it's a Southern novel, it's Gothic.
- 9:16Speaker 2: It's very overwrought, I said when I wrote when I
- 9:19Speaker 2: wrote my review from it a couple of weeks ago,
- 9:23Speaker 2: and it came when it came to me and I said,
- 9:26Speaker 2: this guy's write a lot of Faulkner and a lot
- 9:27Speaker 2: of Cormac McCarthy and and in fact, that's what it's like.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's like, it's like a Southern novel like that, and
- 9:35Speaker 2: it's got some it's got some questionable things in it.
- 9:38Speaker 2: So I don't know that it's really going to stay
- 9:40Speaker 2: at number fourteen very long, but we'll.
- 9:43Speaker 3: See, all right. Well.
- 9:44Speaker 1: He is the founder and editor in chief of Showbiz
- 9:47Speaker 1: for one one. Roger Freeman, it's always great to have
- 9:49Speaker 1: you on. Have a wonderful day and enjoy your digestion
- 9:52Speaker 1: from yesterday. Yeah yeah, Roger, happy you as well, Thank you, sir.
