- 0:30Three points that I'm filled taste fucking good.
- 0:35Beautiful feeling, amazing feeling and especially going.
- 0:41But you know, losing that goal, losing the lead, it was a
- 0:43deflation. So it made the winner even
- 0:45better and even better, there was McGuire.
- 0:48Like another player, player that I've backed a lot, a lot got a
- 0:51lot of criticism for backing, Said he's got great character
- 0:56and he stepped up in a big moment when we needed him right
- 0:59that. That knee slide is just a
- 1:01wonderful thing. I obviously said we should buy
- 1:03Kaiser or Rice in that window. I didn't know who Rasmus
- 1:06Highland was, so they keep going on.
- 1:08So why? Why would you recommend him?
- 1:09Why would you recommend him? Overcame them, I didn't.
- 1:12This is what I mean. You've made this up.
- 1:14I've sent the. Receipts.
- 1:16I've sent the receipts, backed him, I've sent the receipts.
- 1:20You've sent the receipts, you said.
- 1:21Like pay the money you and I've. Sent the receipts I've.
- 1:24Sent the receipts argument about it.
- 1:40Let's kick it off. I'm Steve and I'm joined by Ash
- 1:44and us and we've battled the AWS issues to make it on the pod.
- 1:49Us gave up as easy as I'd expect the United team to give up
- 1:53normally for that's not what what we saw this weekend because
- 1:57Manchester United won two, one against Liverpool at Anfield,
- 2:01Harry Maguire with the winner in the 85th minute.
- 2:05And yeah, it's been a long time coming, nearly a decade, I think
- 2:10since our last win at Anfield. So. 16.
- 2:13Yeah, Rooney, right, Louis van Houel and then before that was
- 2:17Juan Field. So the last, yeah last nine
- 2:20years have been tough, including the seven nil defeat.
- 2:22So I think we would do one. And as always in the rare
- 2:26occasions when we do win a football match, we have to come
- 2:28to Mr Ruben in, Mr Inios in. So us, how much did you enjoy
- 2:35that win against Liverpool at Anfield?
- 2:38As much as everyone did right, it's the for me, I don't know
- 2:43what's what's it like for you. For me it's the the the hardest
- 2:45fixture of the season. I always like for me personally,
- 2:50I've got a lot of Liverpool supporting fans, friends and
- 2:54it's the place where I get the most nerves, the biggest game
- 2:58for me of the season, way more than City.
- 3:01I think Arsenal's probably second for me so.
- 3:05Yeah, And are there any Man City fans anyway?
- 3:08No. The Gallagher brothers and
- 3:11that's about it, isn't it? Pretty much so yeah, it was.
- 3:17And I'd had very low expectations obviously going
- 3:19into this game. The other thing is it's not just
- 3:24for me personally was the battling the kind of United
- 3:28Liverpool thing. It's in, in the context of this
- 3:31almost internal battle we have. Like you've just come to me and
- 3:35reference me as the Reuben in guy and it's almost like
- 3:39feeling. There was a feeling as well of
- 3:42all the Reubens jobs on the line today, right?
- 3:44It's more than just a game. It was like it was bigger than a
- 3:47game. So, you know, I was really
- 3:50hoping that we could step up with a performance.
- 3:52Been telling you guys Liverpool to me have looked dodged this
- 3:55season. So I felt that if we played
- 3:58well, we'd give them a game. Didn't expect us to win the
- 4:04yeah, beautiful feeling, amazing feeling and especially going.
- 4:11But you know, losing that goal, losing the lead, it was a
- 4:14deflation. So it made the winner even
- 4:16better and even better, there was McGuire, like another
- 4:19player, a player that I've backed a lot, a lot, got a lot
- 4:22of criticism for backing. Said he's got great character
- 4:26and he stepped up in a big moment when we needed him, right
- 4:29when the that that nice slide is just a wonderful thing.
- 4:33So many great goals, that guy. You know what's funny, obviously
- 4:36if you if you rewind to the last game at Anfield, obviously it
- 4:39was Reuben's early days and we played quite well.
- 4:42We it was 22 and obviously all United fans will remember that
- 4:45last minute chance where McGuire could have won it.
- 4:48And at that time, Raffy was about two months old, and I was
- 4:52holding him for that chance. And I fell to my knees while
- 4:56holding him and he started crying.
- 4:58And it's quite funny because like, really.
- 5:00Well, Fast forward to now. It was Raffy's first birthday
- 5:03party weekend, so Ash was up in Manchester.
- 5:06We're watching it together. And Ash to score within what, a
- 5:10minute and 10 seconds or whatever?
- 5:13It was just like, surreal, right?
- 5:16Yeah, I mean, I don't think I've ever seen a quicker goal at
- 5:19Anfield. Maybe Yeah, just completely like
- 5:24any team. But great start and good move as
- 5:28well. So yeah, no, I couldn't believe,
- 5:33to be honest. Like we'd started like that.
- 5:36It's amazing what happens when you pass the ball forward and
- 5:39you have forward runners. And you play Ahmad, right?
- 5:43Yeah, exactly. I thought Ahmad was outstanding
- 5:46for the period that it was on the pitch.
- 5:48I saw Reuben actually say what happened.
- 5:53So because he got booked, he decided to take him off because
- 5:56do you remember when he took him off?
- 5:58I was like, why is he taking him off?
- 6:00Because he just looked fresh as a Daisy.
- 6:03But fair play because we've spoken about it a lot, right?
- 6:08Reuben has not had that luck that a manager needs even when
- 6:14you're at the top of the league. So yeah, all the scouses we'll
- 6:18talk about, it's weird. They're saying like they hit the
- 6:22woodwork 3 times, but it's like come on, like 1 was a freaking
- 6:26cross that got deflected. But yeah.
- 6:29I am loving how bitter old Arne is pulling out all the excuses
- 6:35under the sun like oh they changed their team how dare.
- 6:38We change their team low block. I mean, let's rewind to when
- 6:44Gerard Julio used to come to Old Trafford and just park the bus,
- 6:47right? I.
- 6:48Don't even think we did park the bus as well.
- 6:50I thought, you know, we tried to, we tried to play, we tried
- 6:54to attack them and it and then it was in the last, let's say,
- 7:00quarter of the game where we were gassed.
- 7:02We were absolutely just on our knees.
- 7:03We had nothing left, right in the tank.
- 7:05And that's when, yeah, it kind of we really sank back deep,
- 7:08but. Even in the.
- 7:09Ceramically I thought we, we, yeah, we, we, we did try to to
- 7:16have a go most of the game. Even in the ceramics days, I
- 7:21don't remember one single victory where we didn't fight
- 7:25battle grind. The one time we played Liverpool
- 7:30off the park was 1 Field under Louis van Haal, but under Sir
- 7:34Alex Ferguson. I think our greatest victory,
- 7:38John O'Shea, we didn't do anything the whole game.
- 7:41I think Edwin made a few saves and we won the game.
- 7:45And as as mentioned, it's our hardest game.
- 7:48I don't remember playing well there that often so fuck it, I
- 7:52don't care. Like we just take the win.
- 7:55We're just just going back. But historically like, because
- 7:58for me Liverpool way is the big one, as you were saying, like
- 8:01you know, which ones are the biggest?
- 8:02For me, it's the biggest. And I was thinking back like how
- 8:06many times can I remember winning at Anfield?
- 8:08And in my lifetime, I, I'd like look back to see how many times
- 8:12we've won and since like say 2007 that O'Shea one, we've only
- 8:18won four, not including this weekend, SO5 in total.
- 8:23So you think, if you think like over 20 years, we've won five
- 8:25times at Anfield. But then going back beyond that,
- 8:29if these, if this is chat, if ChatGPT is right, we won five on
- 8:34the bounce between 95 to 2000. So it's like back then even was
- 8:41it a game? Because I don't remember those
- 8:42games. Like, you know, would you say it
- 8:44was a a battle? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:47Pull proper game. Yeah, Liverpool weren't that
- 8:50good and they gave us a game every single time.
- 8:55As we'll probably remember the the free, free thing was 94
- 9:00hours. Oh yeah, going free and a lot,
- 9:02yeah. I mean, I was a little bit too
- 9:04young and I didn't have Sky. Go and go and watch.
- 9:07Go and watch the highlights of that.
- 9:10The reason I say that, it's look at the difference of Anfield
- 9:13then versus now. They were there was crazy
- 9:16atmosphere. It was really interesting.
- 9:19At the 90th minute there was a corner, I think around 90 and I
- 9:23could hear a pin drop. I was like what is going on?
- 9:26There's where's. Your famous atmosphere.
- 9:28Unbelievable. It was literally, I was like,
- 9:30it's something wrong with the sound.
- 9:31If Sky turned the sound off or there's a failure and then then
- 9:35they kick the ball. So I was like, no, the the the
- 9:38ball in this, the the is making a sound.
- 9:41Where's the crowd? You're you're at the cop.
- 9:44You're 21 down. Where's this?
- 9:46You're supposed to be sucking the ball into the net, aren't
- 9:48you? What's going on?
- 9:51It was, I think, Gary. Neville turned the noise
- 9:52cancelling button on and we could just hear his screeching
- 9:57when McGuire nestled that into the corner.
- 10:00Beautiful moment. Yeah, Talking of Edwin Van
- 10:03Deser, I have to say Lam Lam, Lamont's is it?
- 10:07How do we say it? We can't do the name thing
- 10:10again. We've got in Boom in boom right
- 10:12now, but now is it Lamont? I'm going Lamont.
- 10:15Lamont's. I thought Lamont's was very
- 10:18composed, right? Second game, big pressure and
- 10:22there was 1 moment where it was a highball high catch and he
- 10:25seemed to slightly misjudge it and I was like Oh my God, thank
- 10:27God he caught that one. But apart from that, he looked
- 10:30really good and that shows you the difference.
- 10:34You know, we played well. For example, I kept saying,
- 10:36guys, look, we played well in the Arsenal game.
- 10:38It was just clowning goal, foot punch to win in just shows you a
- 10:41good goalkeeper can make a a big difference.
- 10:44Two things. A good goalkeeper makes a big
- 10:46difference in scoring the first goal.
- 10:47I keep saying, oh, every if you if so many games are like, oh,
- 10:51we play well for 20 minutes and the first shot they score and it
- 10:54it kind of puts you on the back foot.
- 10:56So that fast start and you get the goal, you get the goal.
- 10:59And I thought we could have got a second.
- 11:00I thought, how did Bruno not put that one in for two nil, right.
- 11:04And then you're 2 nil and you're you're strolling.
- 11:07But yeah, at one nil there was always, it was always tense.
- 11:12And when they scored, I thought, OK, we're done.
- 11:14Because we looked, we, we put everything into that and I
- 11:17thought we were done. So to win, yeah, it was just
- 11:20insane. Insane.
- 11:23The roller coaster emotions, right?
- 11:25But just just going back to that first go.
- 11:27I think for me, I I think I said after the Arsenal game, first
- 11:30game of the season, I liked and boom, because of those runs.
- 11:33You could see it in the first game like he was running in
- 11:35behind way more than you've seen in many years, right?
- 11:39I think in terms of United attackers.
- 11:41And that's exactly what you've done.
- 11:42Like just ran past Van Dyke. Van Dyke with some aura
- 11:46defending Ash. What did you make of of that
- 11:49so-called defending? Yeah, it was like, pass it on
- 11:53defending, wasn't it? So like Neville and Carriger
- 11:56seemed to get confused about it. I mean, for me, Van Dyke just
- 12:00seemed to pass him on to Kanate and like I said, I think that
- 12:04was the most positive thing, even within the first minute, a
- 12:07forward run. Like it just is the most basic
- 12:12thing in football, but it just causes havoc and that's what
- 12:17happened. He makes the run, great pass
- 12:20from actually, there's two great passes, Bruno to Ahmed and then
- 12:24Ahmed's pass, like really inspirational.
- 12:28And just, you know, that is classic Manchester United
- 12:31actually that goal, yeah, forward passing, forward run,
- 12:36bang, counter attack, you know, and off to a great start.
- 12:42And yeah, we actually created some good chances.
- 12:47Obviously Liverpool fans or even the neutral might say oh,
- 12:51Liverpool aren't in great form, but let's be first Steve.
- 12:54Like we've been shit for a year, so let's get the monkey off the
- 13:01back and say yes, we've won 22 league games in a row.
- 13:05And it is. Can't believe first back-to-back
- 13:08wins for Reuben, right? Yeah, exactly.
- 13:10It's like nearly a year, right, Because he obviously joined
- 13:13early November, which is mental, but let's just say it because,
- 13:18you know, it is the elephant in the room.
- 13:20But yeah, nothing to celebrate on that element.
- 13:23But yeah, I thought we also done a number on Liverpool in terms
- 13:29of like we outnumbered him in in different phases of the pitch.
- 13:36So you could say that the system did work to an to an element.
- 13:43But this is the problem, right? Like we know with these players,
- 13:48it could be a one off, so we have to kind of see what happens
- 13:52next Saturday in terms of how well the system, the formation,
- 13:57but. This is what that's what
- 13:58everyone's saying. Let's part that to the side.
- 14:01Let's just like, you know, be in the celebrations because like,
- 14:07it's been a shite year. Liverpool fans will probably be
- 14:11saying, yeah, like, you know, you're celebrating one win, but
- 14:15it's the sweetest win that you can celebrate.
- 14:19So yeah, that's your point. That's kind of how I feel about
- 14:22it as well because like all United fans are kind of like
- 14:24obviously loving it, but there's that element of you need to back
- 14:28it up because we've seen it not happen for so long.
- 14:30But then I'm I keep reminding myself you don't win at Anfield
- 14:33often, so fucking enjoy it. So I'm going to enjoy it for at
- 14:36least 20 minutes on this pod before we talk other.
- 14:39I'm enjoying it until next, you know, till Saturday, like.
- 14:43Yeah, exactly. We have to.
- 14:45This is what I've said. Like we know unfortunately too
- 14:48many Liverpool fans, whether it's socially or at work and now
- 14:52you just you can like put your head up.
- 14:55Ron talked about it a couple months ago.
- 14:57It's like it's depressing going into work.
- 15:00Good. Some good memes going around on
- 15:02the socials, you know, just head up high.
- 15:05Yeah, it's a beautiful day. And if Harry Maguire wants to
- 15:10keep bailing out Reuben, don't know how sustainable it is, but
- 15:15yeah, it gives us these moments. So yeah.
- 15:19Have you seen the stat about Mcguire's last six goals
- 15:23Exactly. Yeah.
- 15:24I think it's like sort of a few, quite a few winners in there.
- 15:29Yeah, obviously the winner. Wasn't a bailout, but I think
- 15:36it's the narrative, isn't it? Like that McGuire keeps scoring
- 15:40these goals, team. No, I thought we I thought we
- 15:43played well. Let's like let's give the team
- 15:45and Ruben props, right? Like going to Anfield is the
- 15:48toughest test for Manchester United and even last season, you
- 15:52know the 2 two I thought we played well.
- 15:55I don't normally expect like when you don't expect to get on
- 15:57the ball at Hanford, right? I think that's kind of like the
- 15:59blueprint. Even going back to the Fergie
- 16:01days, they say settle the crowd down bit of possession and we
- 16:04were doing a bit of that. There was some nice interplay
- 16:07and I thought we played well. And if anything, you're slightly
- 16:09disappointed to not have a two goal cushion, right?
- 16:11Because you know, it's it's always vulnerable at Anfield.
- 16:14So yeah, I think I thought we played really well, especially
- 16:16that first half. I know obviously Gapco hit the
- 16:19post, but so did Bruno as we mentioned.
- 16:22So I thought, you know, in terms of how you can play at Amford, I
- 16:26thought we played really well in that first half, especially as
- 16:29teaming. You're the same.
- 16:30Yeah, I think tactically as well.
- 16:32So I looked at the team selection.
- 16:34I'm like, ah, he played. He's played, Ahmad, at wingback.
- 16:37Thank God for that. You know, I was really happy.
- 16:39And then, lo and behold, after 2 minutes, Ahmad.
- 16:44Assist. Yeah, assist for Imbumo goal and
- 16:47it was like this is exactly what I wanted to see.
- 16:50And nearly a second assist for Bruno.
- 16:52Right, 'cause it was Ahmad that played it back to Bruno.
- 16:54Great pick out, yeah. Yeah, and this is what I was
- 16:56talking about. Like, you know, have that intent
- 16:59put Ahmad at wingback that you can talk all you want about 3-4
- 17:02three, but the personnel can make a difference.
- 17:05I like, I think a lot of people were disappointed with Cesco not
- 17:10starting, but I thought it made sense to have Cunha and boom, I
- 17:14thought Cunha by the way, for bloody hell, what game?
- 17:17I I told you boys, this guy's good.
- 17:20Yeah, he was he. He was like a machine on his
- 17:23own. Just like holding off 5
- 17:25Liverpool players on his own. Getting foul when?
- 17:28He. Was on the floor and then he
- 17:30still managed to keep the ball on the touchline and character
- 17:33crazy. Character and boomo character
- 17:36this is what I'm saying like let the new guys give give the new
- 17:39guys a bit of time. These are top signings, top
- 17:41players and suddenly you know you're giving them 5 minutes and
- 17:45they've gone to Anfield, the hardest ground to go to that's
- 17:48the real test of character and delivered a top performance and
- 17:51we look at that team sheet, there's clear weaknesses there
- 17:55there's you know, Dallow, not a fan of him.
- 17:57I think he did OK, but I'm not a fan sure as well.
- 18:00You know, think he did OK, but he could be upgraded.
- 18:03Casimiro could only go 55 minutes and he's down with
- 18:06cramp. So you can see there's holes in
- 18:09this squad. But the new guys have come in
- 18:12and they've they've really performed Le Mans as well.
- 18:15I thought composed good save off Isaac, for example, in the
- 18:20one-on-one situation. So really pleased that he got
- 18:24the team selection. I think really right.
- 18:26I got the tactics right as well. Like we basically didn't let
- 18:30them press us. We just went long, dropped off 1
- 18:33and waited for the second ball like had lots of men around that
- 18:36place where the second ball is going to drop and then quick,
- 18:39quick, quick attack from there. And it was it was good.
- 18:42And that that's where the gold came.
- 18:43You saw that kind of challenge. Van Dyke elbows McAllister in
- 18:47the head, which I thought was funny.
- 18:50And then? When McAllister looked like a
- 18:51swimmer for the rest of the game.
- 18:53And then they want the play stop for that, right?
- 18:55Yeah, just a joke done by. But but in slot moaning about
- 18:58all the long balls. It's like, sorry mate, this is,
- 19:01this is the battle, this is a Premier League and I love the
- 19:04fact we were up for a fight. You know, we're not messing
- 19:07around. Klopp used to be the same
- 19:09though, and it's just like change the record, like Bengi
- 19:13used to complain as well. And you know, there's a reason
- 19:17for it, right? Because generally they didn't
- 19:19win the big trophies for that reason.
- 19:21So like, it's the Premier League, so especially this
- 19:26season, right when you got Arteta.
- 19:29And the team top of the table, you know, tossing in balls, set
- 19:33pieces galore. So it's just clearly a thing for
- 19:36this season right inside. And we were winning those second
- 19:38balls. So you've got to fight for them
- 19:40too. You like that's part of the
- 19:41game. So it was, you know, it was
- 19:44scrappy. We're not a team that was
- 19:46keeping in the one field game. We were basically keeping the
- 19:50ball away from them for the first half.
- 19:52And that wasn't the case here. But we were, you know, it was an
- 19:54end to end game. We were challenging them.
- 19:58If they had their chances, it could could have gone either
- 20:00way. And that's why like, you know,
- 20:02you need that first goal to give you the the confidence.
- 20:05But I'm what I'm so proud of is that having conceded, they
- 20:09didn't give up and they kept going.
- 20:12And what a ball from Bruno Fernandez.
- 20:15What the hell? Every time people, you know, go
- 20:18on and on about the deficiencies of Bruno, and then but in one
- 20:21moment he just produces just a moment of magic.
- 20:24He's like, sorry, but you know. Scott, if you're listening, I
- 20:28know you want him to go off to Saudi, but you know, I'm happy
- 20:31with him having been around for another 12 months and giving us
- 20:35that moment of magic. And This is why he's in my
- 20:38fantasy team, because funnily enough, on Friday I was
- 20:40thinking, do I take Bruno out and bring Palmer in?
- 20:44But this is before it was announced.
- 20:45Palmer's out for another six weeks.
- 20:47So then I'm looking at the options to replace Bruno.
- 20:49And I'm like, who do I want at that price?
- 20:51Mark, I'll take Bruno. Have you got?
- 20:54Big Bray? Have you got Big Bray?
- 20:55I've not. I've not actually.
- 20:57I've got Big Bray, yeah. Okay, nice, nice.
- 20:59You benefited from the goal from that as well.
- 21:05But funnily enough, Ash said to me Friday night half as a joke,
- 21:08Oh, you should put him captain. And I considered it for like 10
- 21:12minutes, like I can't do that. So I didn't do it, but obviously
- 21:16got the assist. But he nearly got the goal as
- 21:18well, right? So yeah, not far off a goal and
- 21:21assistant. People are keep to I actually
- 21:24should do some stats on this. I'll do it for the next part
- 21:26just to look this up, but from viewing the game, people are
- 21:30saying, oh, Bruno has to play #10 you've got best attacking
- 21:33midfield there. Why are we playing him in the
- 21:35deep position? He still seems to get in these
- 21:37attacking positions. The deficiency of Bruno or the
- 21:41the the weakness of him in the central midfield?
- 21:43Is your central midfield open? So defensively, I feel we're
- 21:46weak and vulnerable. But he's in terms of attacking,
- 21:49he still seems to make those runs get on the end of things,
- 21:52still create. Because he moves around.
- 21:54Perfect demonstration of the weakness of having Bruno in
- 21:59midfield is when Gapco hit the post first the first time.
- 22:02So ball from Salab takes out the midfield, Gapco one touch past
- 22:07the lit and gets a shot off and hits the post.
- 22:09That displays the downside of Bruno.
- 22:12So yeah, it's fine. Margins, right?
- 22:13Exactly. But I think it's, it's, it's we,
- 22:16we, we want to see a bit more attacking.
- 22:19We want to see the extra attacker on the pitch, right?
- 22:21Everyone's going on about, oh, we have to switch to 4231 or
- 22:24433, We're lacking the extra attacker.
- 22:26And I'm like, no, if you play I'm out at wingback and you play
- 22:29Bruno in central midfield, you have 5 really attacking players.
- 22:33So I don't think it's a system issue.
- 22:35It's about Ruben being brave with his team selection.
- 22:38I was so glad when I saw the team sheet, like good on you.
- 22:42You've, you've gone brave. We've gone there to try and win
- 22:45this game and get get and we, we were aggressive, you know, we
- 22:50tried to, to score goals. Inevitably Liverpool just can
- 22:54bring off, bring on 100,000,000 LB players off the bench and
- 22:58just like pummelled us and put 7 forwards on at the end.
- 23:01And it's like, there's only so much you can deal with, right?
- 23:05Can we can we talk about that? Can we talk about that period
- 23:07before they equalised? Because they were, they were
- 23:09kind of coming at us and you could almost feel the equaliser
- 23:12coming. But on down the other end we
- 23:15were counter attacking and getting into space but we
- 23:17couldn't keep the ball and I got really frustrated as Ash will
- 23:20attest to that. Kobe Mane wasn't brought on the
- 23:22pitch because I felt someone that can take the ball under
- 23:25pressure would have been perfect for that moment of the game.
- 23:29You know, around the 60th minute and then obviously they got the
- 23:31equaliser and then you're thinking shit, right?
- 23:34I think most United fans are thinking shit.
- 23:36This is only going one way, which obviously made the winner
- 23:40even better. But funnily enough, again, I was
- 23:43quite pissed off that Kobe hadn't come on not only before
- 23:47the equaliser, but then when he equalises, he's even more pissed
- 23:49off. And then I saw Kobe and Euro.
- 23:52Was it just warming up on the touchline ready to come on?
- 23:54Yeah. And I I sent a message and then
- 23:56let's kick it off group. Fuck off, Reuben.
- 23:58I went for a piss and the next thing I can hear Ash going mad.
- 24:03And I missed the I missed the goal because McGuire had scored.
- 24:07But that's that's the. D Slide.
- 24:09Do you know what was even more funny?
- 24:11Like, Raffia just dropped his, like, drink bottle and I had to,
- 24:15like, go from the sofa to pick it up.
- 24:19And then, yeah, like, just as I'm turning around, like,
- 24:22McGuire is just like, heading it and putting it into the corner.
- 24:25And then I celebrated and he he got scared.
- 24:28So yeah, that's one for the memories.
- 24:31But yeah, great ball in from Bruno put it into a dangerous
- 24:34area and then Harry McGuire with the winner let.
- 24:38Me. Just talk to you about that move
- 24:40though, Steve. He didn't bring Kobe on, but he
- 24:43puts Cesco on. That's an attacking move, right?
- 24:45So instead of he's not saying I need to keep control the game,
- 24:48I'm bringing my centre forward on for Mason Mount.
- 24:51I'm going to have the big three up front and keep doing the same
- 24:54plan. I'm not going to.
- 24:56I'm going to let the game stay open.
- 24:58They're going to come at us and then we're going to go again.
- 25:00We're going to go long so. Yeah, but how are you getting
- 25:02the balls to the medium? How are you getting the balls to
- 25:05the front three, though? That's long balls.
- 25:06That's what we were doing. That's what.
- 25:08Literally as as he doesn't rate him.
- 25:10Just face facts like for whatever reason he doesn't rate
- 25:14him or he can't do what he wants him to do.
- 25:17Yeah. Because again, what were the
- 25:19tactics of that game was not to keep the ball right.
- 25:21Yeah. But that, that moment, that
- 25:23moment of the game required so. You would have gone mainly
- 25:26instead of Cesco. But what all I'm saying is that
- 25:28going Cesco is not a. Bad idea, he I think, if
- 25:32anything, Steve, correct me if I'm wrong, probably both.
- 25:34Surely you're saying copy for a Garto, right?
- 25:38Yeah, just get Kobe on the pitch.
- 25:40I'm not even necessarily thinking who for?
- 25:41Probably a Garter. Yeah, like just get Kobe onto
- 25:44that football field and he will. Help.
- 25:46I do understand that, but you also have to understand.
- 25:49You, you're a, you're a midfielder.
- 25:51Like there's not even a question of like who would you rather
- 25:54have on the pitch, especially from a footballing perspective,
- 25:57Right? But this is the relevant of long
- 25:59balls. I think we go.
- 26:00I think we go to another. It depends.
- 26:02It depends what you're trying to achieve, which is that if you're
- 26:07saying that you're 1 nil up, Manuel Agarte is the guy who
- 26:11can, who's got more mobility and can tackle, you know, Kobe Mano,
- 26:15a massive fan of his. I want to see him on the pitch.
- 26:17But I I sympathise because he brought Cesco on.
- 26:22If he didn't bring Cesco on, then I would have been like, oh,
- 26:24you're wasting, you know, we should be going for the second
- 26:27goal. I still think he was going for
- 26:28the second goal, so I have a bit of sympathy.
- 26:31I would like to see more of Kobe mainly play football.
- 26:35I think he could have brought him on earlier for Bruno is a
- 26:37little bit gassed earlier, but he's the captain.
- 26:40It was a bit hard right to take him off and Bruno plays the ball
- 26:44for Mcguire's header. Yeah, yeah, you have to keep him
- 26:48on the pit. You got to keep Bruno on the
- 26:49pit. Yeah, you have to keep.
- 26:50Him and that's the thing, like you're going to say, OK, play
- 26:52Bruno and mania and central midfield.
- 26:55It's like it's a bit lightweight in term.
- 26:57You know, the legs aren't there. So I understand why we went with
- 27:00agarte. I don't think Agarte is a long
- 27:02term solution. I think we we I look that's what
- 27:05I mean. I look at this squad and go, oh,
- 27:06if you upgrade Luke Shaw, Casimiro and Dallow in the next
- 27:10window, because we'll I've said this a multi phase, right?
- 27:12It's not one window that to me looks like a much better team
- 27:17because the the the new guys. I was so impressed.
- 27:20I thought Mount did well as well for the 60 minutes it was on the
- 27:23pitch. I I still haven't seen the Mason
- 27:26Mount of Chelsea. Like I have not seen that yet.
- 27:29That's COVID season. He was unbelievable.
- 27:32I haven't seen one game at that level yet, but in terms of work
- 27:36rate and, and going back to that point of profile, he's more of a
- 27:40midfielder. So we we were able to have more
- 27:45ability to win those second balls because, you know, Mount
- 27:48and Cunha, Brian, Casimiro, Fernandez all clustered in that
- 27:53central space. So I think Ruben got the team
- 27:56selection right. I understand substitutes we can
- 28:00have a debate about. I think that's fair.
- 28:02I would have liked to see Kobe earlier as well, but we won the
- 28:06game. But we won the game.
- 28:07That's all that matters. That's all that matters.
- 28:09I got. Any.
- 28:10Slide, yeah. We're done.
- 28:12And I. Was an idiot in the toilet.
- 28:13I missed it. That's there.
- 28:15You go? Yeah.
- 28:16That's 100. That's.
- 28:17The good thing though, that's the story you tell in five years
- 28:20time when you're like, yeah, I was, I was having a piss when
- 28:25Aaron Maguire scored the winner. Like some of my.
- 28:28It's going to be, yeah, it's if five years time when we've won
- 28:31the treble, you're going to reminisce about this little
- 28:33moment and I'll be like, oh, Steve, do you remember when you
- 28:36wanted us to fail so that Ineos could go out and you're
- 28:39desperate of us to lose every game and a good old slab head,
- 28:43you know, scored that goal at Anfield and that set us off on
- 28:46this on the track to come fifth in the season, qualify for the
- 28:50Champions League. And that's why we're here now,
- 28:52wherever that venue, yes. I tell.
- 28:55You we'll be reminiscing with what's his name, is it Faisal
- 28:59Islam about how it all started. Do you remember how we were
- 29:03talking about how it all started in that Coventry game?
- 29:06Sliding doors moments, right? I know when, no, when you tried
- 29:08to cajole him into Southgate in Bell, in Bill.
- 29:11Sorry, can I just say I've had two of the greatest pisses of
- 29:14all time this year. One of them was when Noel was
- 29:17playing the master plan at Heaton Park in Manchester, and
- 29:21the second one was winning at Anfield.
- 29:23So I think that is probably the two of the best you're going to
- 29:26get. But Ash, Harry McGuire, yeah, I
- 29:29know, obviously I missed it. Like question, and this is for
- 29:33both of you. You know, when that game
- 29:35started, like I remember Anfield away, even thinking back to like
- 29:40Champions League finals. You know, when your heart's like
- 29:42beating out of your chest for a big game?
- 29:44You know that feeling right, when it's a big game and you can
- 29:46feel it pumping. Was was it pumping for you both
- 29:51as it would have been in previous years?
- 29:53Genuine question, US would you say?
- 29:55Yeah, that bad. It was, yeah, badly.
- 29:58Yeah. OK, again, goes back to the
- 30:01point in in in Ash's case, he doesn't have that emotional link
- 30:05to the manager while I do. And therefore that's why I was
- 30:07like, it's not just the Liverpool Man United thing.
- 30:09It was a it was a Reuben thing and a fan base thing.
- 30:12And it was like I was waiting for the pylon of everyone, like,
- 30:16you know, coming, coming at me about how this is just all a
- 30:19flop. So it was, it was, it was for
- 30:22me. I knew this was a big game and a
- 30:24big moment. We're talking about.
- 30:27We've got the bets, Steve, right?
- 30:29Yeah. What's the pizza place called?
- 30:33Rudy's. Rudy's other pizza is available
- 30:35in Man. You've got that.
- 30:36You've got. That's done.
- 30:37If you if you've got this, you know we can get the sponsorship.
- 30:39Rudy's if you're interested to buy Rudy's.
- 30:41I'll pay you out earlier. It's done.
- 30:43That's done you but. Do you know what I mean?
- 30:44Like for me, this game was can I get, can I get that?
- 30:48I might go Margarita. I don't know, Befala.
- 30:50We'll see what they have available on the specials menu.
- 30:53Bit of dessert thrown in as well.
- 30:55So for me there was a lot on the line on this game, not just
- 30:57three points. It's the whole atmosphere around
- 30:59the club. We had Jim Ratcliffe come out
- 31:02and say he wants to give Ruben three years and everyone
- 31:04laughing at this comment. He's going to, you know, get get
- 31:063 weeks or less than that, right?
- 31:09Because I think our bet was the November.
- 31:11I was saying he's he's going to get through to November at least
- 31:15and maybe then the international break.
- 31:17For me, this was just, yeah, I was nervous.
- 31:19I was, it was tense like I was especially as it goes, the game
- 31:26developed because I could feel that, oh, we're we're close to
- 31:29something special here. And that's why when the goal
- 31:32went in, I thought, OK, we're done.
- 31:34Right to what? They're going to come.
- 31:35Back and that's and that's why I was getting frustrated on the
- 31:376th because you can feel the game is there for the taking.
- 31:40That's what you could sense right after the first half and
- 31:42that's why I was getting frustrated.
- 31:43But Ash, you weren't having that same feeling of yeah, I, I asked
- 31:48the question because I was thinking, is it linked to how we
- 31:51feel about the manager in the club?
- 31:52So, Ash, yeah, it wasn't like a a normal Hamfield feeling for
- 31:56you, would you say? No, the the game is always the
- 31:59same. It's like the biggest game of
- 32:01the season in terms of that part.
- 32:03But yeah, just because of the form.
- 32:07Yeah, just I didn't have that feeling like in in previous
- 32:11years, like if you're talking about like this the Fergie days
- 32:14and like we're going for the title even when Liverpool aren't
- 32:17involved in the title. Yeah, the the heart is out of
- 32:22the chest. But I didn't have that feeling.
- 32:25I I had that feeling of just like we can do something today.
- 32:30I definitely had that feeling. Do you remember?
- 32:31I was chatting to Laura's dad and normally we're like, yeah,
- 32:37we're going to get absolutely battered, but I had a feeling we
- 32:40could do something. I probably thought draw more
- 32:42than anything. Ruben seems to get better
- 32:46performances when he's got his back against the wall against,
- 32:50especially against big teams. So everyone keeps referencing
- 32:53it. But yeah, Arsenal played decent
- 32:56enough and obviously last season, the Anfield performance
- 33:00I thought was actually a good performance.
- 33:03And, you know, this wasn't just like score a goal and then part
- 33:09the bus. We created opportunities at one
- 33:12nil. Yeah, such a shame because Bruno
- 33:15actually hits it very well. But you know, when you're in
- 33:18that position, you just you got to score.
- 33:21But I was going to say actually like historically, again,
- 33:24thinking about this fixture, I can't remember the last time
- 33:28United scored like, say four goals and field like three goals
- 33:32is very rare. Like we had a little spell in
- 33:35the mid 90s of doing that. So really and truly like, you
- 33:38know, as we like it in terms of stats, like we normally get one
- 33:42or two goals at Anfield to win a game anyway and we have to ride
- 33:46our luck, which we did with Gapko here in the posts in both
- 33:51halves. But yeah, I thought also we
- 33:55actually defended pretty well in terms of like just before they
- 33:59scored, like they weren't really hurting us.
- 34:03Like, you know, I know they had chances like the Seller 1 and
- 34:07things like that, but you have to ride your luck out Anfield.
- 34:11But I did want to touch on the goalkeeper because I think the
- 34:13biggest compliment and like, I know it's only two games, but I
- 34:16don't care if I'm memed up later.
- 34:18But I think the biggest compliment I can pay him is we
- 34:23didn't we didn't notice him because he just done everything
- 34:27correct pretty much right. He he made the saves, You know,
- 34:32he even with the ESAC shop is the type of save I would make
- 34:36with my. Face Yeah, I know what you mean.
- 34:38I think we did notice him because it's such a stark
- 34:40contrast to what we've seen. That's what I mean.
- 34:42Like I get your. Point though, like it's, it's a
- 34:44calming presence, right? That's what we've talked, that's
- 34:47what we've talked about and that's what he gave.
- 34:48So yeah, I agree. With that, it's the potential,
- 34:50right? It's what Edwin van Desaad did
- 34:53so many weeks at United like in the season.
- 34:57And this is what I'm talking about the limitation of, you
- 35:00know, people talk about Reuben and coaching.
- 35:01If you've got a guy in goal throwing the ball in the net,
- 35:04there's only so much you can do and he.
- 35:07May, but he took three weeks to put him in, so that's on him.
- 35:10100% and that's why you know you when when Reuben makes those
- 35:16selection decisions that haven't worked out, he deserves the
- 35:20criticism and that, but I think in this time, give him credit.
- 35:23Second game he's played Le Mans. He played a mad at wingback.
- 35:27He went Bruno Casimiro aggressive in midfield, played
- 35:31played went with the the approach of Cunha and Mbumo and
- 35:36mount up up top with dropping Cesco, and it worked and it was
- 35:41it worked. Well.
- 35:41See, I want to give him a bit of credit, but also went former out
- 35:45the main man McGuire right. A lot of people like why is
- 35:47Harry playing? And obviously, you know, I
- 35:50believe in Harry. I believe in in his ability to
- 35:53deal with big moments and Ash has laughed at me many times
- 35:57when I talk about his great character and I'm like, I
- 35:59genuinely believe this is a guy that's you know, World Cup semi
- 36:03finals, finals EUR, you know, scores penalties and shootouts.
- 36:07He always steps up. He's limited in some respects,
- 36:11but the when the balls were coming into the box that that
- 36:14massive forehead was getting on the end of a lot of them and
- 36:17then on the other end of it perfect header like it was it
- 36:21was it was almost who's about like Duncan Ferguson S great the
- 36:25one of the best headers of the ball perfect back where it came
- 36:28from. Goalkeeper just stood there and
- 36:31the knee slide is always just on point, like the guy just has
- 36:35nails. The knee slide, it was
- 36:37absolutely wonderful. It's the it's going to be the
- 36:40best knee slide in the in the world.
- 36:42Yeah, what I love about that celebration.
- 36:44Yeah, brilliant knee slide in front of the scouses, first of
- 36:47all, and then takes his time, runs over to the United end,
- 36:51laps it up like perfect Harry and fair play to him.
- 36:55Like, yeah, let's let's give Harry his props.
- 36:57We know he's got a lot of stick over the years, as you touched
- 37:00on it there. He's not like, you know, a world
- 37:03class high elite defender, but he's a very solid defender.
- 37:06I think most people would agree with that.
- 37:08But more importantly, he was, you know, attacked on social
- 37:12media for a good couple years, right?
- 37:14And it went, you know, went too far essentially.
- 37:16And for him to come back and get the winner at Anfield, yeah,
- 37:21fair play to him, Ash. I don't think you'd argue with
- 37:22that, would you? No, I mean, I actually said it
- 37:25quite a few years ago when I used to like argue with us about
- 37:28it. Like the best Harry Maguire that
- 37:31you're you're going to get is actually in the back three.
- 37:35And I don't know if you remember before the game when we saw the
- 37:38line up, I she said I would have done the same.
- 37:42I would have put McGuire in the in the middle of that free and
- 37:47yeah, I would have actually dropped Euro because even though
- 37:51Euro has been promising, he's still 8, you know, he's still
- 37:541819 and like, Anfield is a big game.
- 37:59Yeah, I might have got I might have gone with your a bit into
- 38:01the shore sure was the one. I was a bit like he hasn't
- 38:03played well. So I was, but he which?
- 38:09And to be fair, I was. Happy enough with Shore, good on
- 38:12Luke Shaw. For maintaining like a run of
- 38:14games. Yeah, it's like every game this
- 38:17is. I don't know.
- 38:19It just seems to be and this is a thing like part of coaching is
- 38:22also fitness, isn't it? And some of these guys have been
- 38:25constantly injured where I was telling you, I think 10 hugs
- 38:28over training these guys right too much.
- 38:31They seem to like Mount seems to be Touchwood getting there.
- 38:36Luke Shaw seems to be playing more games.
- 38:38I think it's going to help that we don't have the midweek
- 38:40fixtures, the recovery. I heard they were back at
- 38:42Carrington straight after in the ice baths and whatever they do,
- 38:45you know, in the new facilities that we'll talk about.
- 38:48The Sachim has paid for out the kindness of his heart.
- 38:52But yeah, so I think the the fitness of the the players that
- 38:56at 70 minutes they looked they're given everything, right?
- 38:59They've absolutely given everything.
- 39:01So to for me, that character to, to go again, to not think, OK,
- 39:05we're done to keep going to win that corner was a good move as
- 39:10well as I remember, I think Cunha was it Cunha running
- 39:16through on goal to get the corner and then.
- 39:17Yeah, I think it was you. Know we were still going for it.
- 39:20We're still going, you know, trying to win that game quick
- 39:25props actually to the to the corner that led to the goal.
- 39:30That was a heck of a strike. I think from the angle I saw it
- 39:34might have been going wide, but I definitely like jumped to be
- 39:37like, oh, but you know that. That's looking good and boomer,
- 39:40right? It was a good, it was like, it
- 39:42was like a good corner routine and yeah, like what a cross, you
- 39:49know, and. And we and we touched on it, but
- 39:52I think yeah, Kenya, especially in those last 1520 minutes,
- 39:56that's the best game management I've seen from a United player
- 39:58in a long, long time. So that was good to.
- 40:00See you have to cheat though as well.
- 40:02See, like none, not enough of these players do it.
- 40:05And that's that's. What I mean?
- 40:06The fans, well, that's what I would Fans loved that yesterday.
- 40:09I was like Rooney. I wouldn't call it even game
- 40:12game management. It was just like sheer Willis.
- 40:16Sheer, like, yeah, 100%. Like I'm just going to take the
- 40:20ball, come and get it off me. No, you're not getting it off
- 40:22me. That's exactly what you want to
- 40:24see as a family. Unbelievable.
- 40:25Like just. And wasn't he in Asia as well,
- 40:28like on the Internationals? I think he had a long flight
- 40:32midweek, yeah, to get back. For it so don't tell me you
- 40:35can't do this like pull out the wood like pull out the fire like
- 40:39you can. It's not always about what the
- 40:41managers cultivating in terms of the dressing room it's in, it's
- 40:46in yourself and Kenya can you proved it?
- 40:49So big question then as three more years for Reuben is what he
- 40:55needs, right to get it right at United.
- 40:58Would you agree with that? Think that what Jim was saying,
- 41:03this goes back to this Ratcliffe interview, right?
- 41:05With the times I haven't actually listened to, I should
- 41:07listen to. It.
- 41:08I've listened to it, yeah, He only does a couple minutes on
- 41:10United. Yeah, I think it's more on the
- 41:12business side of things and similar to other previous
- 41:15interviews we've done, it's usually like the last 10 minutes
- 41:18they cover the football element whether it's Ruben or not.
- 41:23I've always said this is a three-year project, you can't
- 41:26solve everything in one year. I've mentioned it before with
- 41:32our Tetra and Clop and so many other previous pods that you
- 41:35know the first year is you sort certain stuff out, then you go
- 41:39again in another summer. I've already mentioned the
- 41:41players. I think that so it's all about
- 41:45recruitment and it's all about better players.
- 41:46The difference in this game, if you swap Cunya and Mbumo for
- 41:51Anthony and Garnacho, we do not win.
- 41:53It doesn't matter who the coach is, I don't care.
- 41:55You need better players and whoever is the manager, it's a
- 41:59three-year project and I think it's fair enough to say whoever
- 42:02that manager is needs a bit of time.
- 42:04They still need to deliver results.
- 42:06Reuben has to deliver result. This is why this is a big game.
- 42:09You. You.
- 42:10And he said he said that Jim said that.
- 42:11Jim said that is results driven. We've both.
- 42:15The thing is with myself and Ash, we both set the same
- 42:18target. It's not like we have different
- 42:20targets. I've said we want to qualify for
- 42:21Europe, he said we need to qualify for Europe.
- 42:23I've said about 7, he said about 7:00.
- 42:26So we have the same expectation and the same target.
- 42:28You cannot finish 15th or whatever we were last season.
- 42:33Unacceptable. These these are big games.
- 42:35I'm looking at the table now. We played eight games.
- 42:39Four of those games are the top 4:00.
- 42:41We, we our top 4. So we've had hard fixtures,
- 42:45beaten Chelsea, beaten Liverpool.
- 42:48We yes, we lost to City and Arsenal, but I think Arsenal, we
- 42:51deserved a draw. I think, I think we were the
- 42:53better team. And yeah, but that's
- 42:55understandable. Like you can lose to Arsenal and
- 42:58City. Exactly.
- 42:59So now this is this is this and against Brentford, you know,
- 43:04like that clearly isn't acceptable.
- 43:07I think looking at the fixtures coming up, Brighton next to Old
- 43:12Trafford, this is where you now need to really prove yourself
- 43:16right. This is a great result.
- 43:18Against Liverpool you lose and have we lost our last four games
- 43:22against Brighton or something? Last last three games are Old
- 43:24Trafford. I know the.
- 43:25Bogey team, right? They're a bogey team.
- 43:28And this is where you need to now go and show that yes, when I
- 43:32say that last year doesn't count and this is a new team with new
- 43:36players with with the Cunyas, Cescos and boomers, different
- 43:40characters, different quality. Now go and beat Brighton and
- 43:45then we'll know, right? And then we've got unfortunately
- 43:48Forrester getting Sean Dyson because if I'd had the clown in
- 43:53charge then we would have easily won that, I think.
- 43:57And then and then a massive game before the international break
- 44:01going, going to Spurs, right, Because I don't think Spurs, I
- 44:05think Spurs is start of the season has been overrated.
- 44:08Personally, I think they've got some good results that haven't
- 44:12played that well. And then they lost against Villa
- 44:13at the weekend. So if we can, I think these are
- 44:16the three games we look at those and go right now.
- 44:19Show yourself, boys, you raised it.
- 44:22Yes, Coon, you're flying all the way from Brazil and you've,
- 44:24you've you've, you know, put gone with the caffeine or
- 44:27whatever you've had to like find the extra lever, extra gear.
- 44:31Now now, come back to the theatre and deliver us 3 points.
- 44:35This is what everyone's saying, right?
- 44:37It's really interesting. You know, the journos are saying
- 44:39it, as in it's got to be backed up.
- 44:42The fans are saying it because obviously we've been let down so
- 44:44many times. Even I saw and a little clip put
- 44:48out by United. Obviously United are loving it
- 44:50on the socials after the game. They're sending out discounts
- 44:53for the megastore proper. Lapping it up today, it's a
- 44:56little 1 1/2 minute clip as the players walk into the training
- 44:59ground. How was yesterday?
- 45:00Everyone's buzzing. I really liked what Cesco said.
- 45:03We've got to win the next game. He's the only one to say it.
- 45:05I noticed Luke Shaw with a full iced coffee.
- 45:08That's the second time I've seen him with Gail's iced coffee in
- 45:11the space of a week. So I'd like to know what's going
- 45:13on behind the scenes there. But yeah, I think everyone is
- 45:16saying it right, It needs to be backed up.
- 45:18Ashley looks very sceptical when I was getting on this positive
- 45:21vibe there. So I'll let you close it off
- 45:22before we touch on the ownership stuff.
- 45:25Do you think these guys are going to back it up in these
- 45:27next few games? I've got to believe that, right?
- 45:31I mean, I want this to work, but I've just not seen enough
- 45:34evidence so far. So I want it to work.
- 45:36I'm I'm buzzing going into Saturday.
- 45:40But this is the problem. We we have to find out.
- 45:43So if we're here, if we're tune it up after 20 minutes, things
- 45:47are looking good. But yeah, like it's literally on
- 45:52a game by game basis, almost like in different phases of the
- 45:56game, as you know, Steve. But actually my final question,
- 45:59Steve, is, is for you, because obviously you're kind of like in
- 46:03between both of us in terms of the Reuben stance.
- 46:06So given what you saw yesterday, that's probably his biggest
- 46:12victory to date. Is that a blueprint of like what
- 46:20you would want to see in terms of football?
- 46:24Proof is in the pudding my friend.
- 46:27It's results. Business right Starmer answer.
- 46:29No, no, like I, you know my thoughts.
- 46:32I don't think it's going to work out.
- 46:34I was pissed off Kobe Mane who didn't come on the pitch.
- 46:37But I'll lap up the winner Anfield and I'll get behind it
- 46:40and. But also more importantly, so
- 46:42look, we all loved yesterday and nothing's ever going to take
- 46:46that away from us, even when Kabir starts banging on about
- 46:50XG, blah, blah, blah. But I'm just saying if that is
- 46:54say, like his pinnacle moment so far and into it in terms of the
- 46:59football that you want to see at Old Trafford whenever you go
- 47:02back, is that what you want to see?
- 47:05Is like is that enough for you? That would be but I think it's
- 47:09difficult to judge based on Anfield because it's such a
- 47:13anomaly of a game. So in terms of an Anfield but.
- 47:16We create good chances, yeah, I'm saying if you could see
- 47:18those chances and you see free at the back like free centre
- 47:22backs clogging the the penalty area, some weeks you're going to
- 47:25see Dalla on the left, some weeks you're going to see Ahmad.
- 47:29Some ways you're going to see them as worry is that is that is
- 47:31that good enough for you? Like can you if?
- 47:33We win for three years. You know me, right?
- 47:35I've always said I I take wins. I was a big fan of Jose.
- 47:39I'm not wedded to a particular style as a United fan.
- 47:42I love counter attacking goals or direct goals like in Boom We
- 47:45scored. I'll take Harry Maguire headed
- 47:47to win at Anfield or win any game for that matter.
- 47:49So. Steve, question, what's your
- 47:51target? Results.
- 47:52What's your target? Same results, I said to you
- 47:54guys. Same as European football, so
- 47:56yeah. And I just just for people to
- 48:00understand what that that means. That means you are going to lose
- 48:02a lot of football matches. It's different when you're going
- 48:04for the league that where there are going to be ups and downs.
- 48:09And we're kind of, you know, we're tracking closer to where
- 48:12we need to be. But we've had a hard start in my
- 48:15opinion, for all these first eight games on balance that
- 48:19playing the top four in the first eight.
- 48:21Therefore in the next 8 + 3, 11 games, we're not going to play
- 48:27those top four teams right. It's the rest.
- 48:28Of them, there's a big argument to say that we're we're kind of
- 48:33on track because yeah, even we're in the top half of the
- 48:35league. Are we now?
- 48:36Are we? What are we 9th or?
- 48:38When 9/13/13 points from eight games is about kind of around
- 48:44basically, right? So This is why these next three
- 48:47games are really important to show that.
- 48:50Can you now string a few words? You don't have to win all of
- 48:53them, but you want to get 3 points in the home game against
- 48:56Brighton. Then you've got 2 difficult away
- 48:58games, Forest and Spurs difficult games.
- 49:00If you could win one of those and draw one, suddenly you're
- 49:03going, oh. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:05You're pushing for Europe. So I think we're in the right,
- 49:07We're in the right region. I think you know, and also like.
- 49:11How? How are you adapting the bet?
- 49:13Now let's say I've won my my rude if we were to do another
- 49:15Rudy's put put let's, let's or or what other restaurants are
- 49:19what are the good restaurants we have in Manchester?
- 49:21We said ashes, right, the Indian top class.
- 49:24Yeah. So if you if you were to do
- 49:25another bit now for Ruben out, where would you draw the line
- 49:29now? I, I genuinely think that result
- 49:32on the weekend. I think he's staying the season
- 49:34minimum now. Oh.
- 49:34Wow, OK, that's a big change. Yeah, yeah, because we always
- 49:39said, right. One of the big factors as to why
- 49:41Ruben wouldn't get the boot is because it looks bad on Ineos.
- 49:44The hierarchy, they've now got enough.
- 49:47They've got enough to go with from this, these first 7-8 games
- 49:50to just say we'll give him the season.
- 49:53So what you're saying is before that game you thought he's gone,
- 49:57You put the pizza bit on. After that game, he's lasting
- 49:59the whole season. Would you therefore describe
- 50:01this game as pivotal? 100 percent, 100% because if we
- 50:06lost for nil, right? I reckon he's gone today.
- 50:09So when you found the definition of pivotal finally, yeah, do.
- 50:13You do you think even if we finish say like 10th, he's going
- 50:17to stay in it then just because of.
- 50:18That I don't know beyond. I don't know about beyond.
- 50:20He's still. The end of the season.
- 50:22He's going to get the season, I think minimum.
- 50:24Because, OK, I'm saying if we go on another like bad run, even at
- 50:28say, Christmas, you. Think he stays.
- 50:31I think he rides. I think they'll ride it.
- 50:33They'll ride it out now. Yeah, as long as there's, you
- 50:35know, a relative chance of getting into Europe of some
- 50:38sort, I think they'll ride it out.
- 50:40And that brings me on to the closing segment for this pod
- 50:44because we had a couple of weeks off, right, international break.
- 50:48She thought you'd get a nice few weeks in Sri Lanka, kick back in
- 50:51the sun as you had a week off on the pod as well.
- 50:54So we're all chilling thinking it's going to be a slow
- 50:57Newsweek. And then suddenly Mr Turkey LL
- 51:01Sheikh, the boxing guy, very prominent in Saudi, he's done a
- 51:06lot of the deals to bring entertainment over to Saudi.
- 51:09Riyadh season. AJ has been involved.
- 51:12Anthony Joshua, that is Tyson Fury.
- 51:15I think he's involved in the Gulf in some degree, darts,
- 51:19snooker. So yeah, he's a big, big man in
- 51:23the world of sport over in the Middle East.
- 51:26And he put a little tweet out saying something along the lines
- 51:30of he's heard that there's new investors for Manchester United
- 51:34and he hopes they'll be better than the last ones.
- 51:37And then obviously, social media blew up.
- 51:39And then the next day, I think he had to come out and slightly
- 51:42clarify the position that it's not in his home country.
- 51:46But yeah, there is new, new investors.
- 51:49And then probably a few days later, the talk is a consortium
- 51:54in the UAE are preparing a bid. What I read on the latest is
- 52:02it's Jamie Jackson from the Guardian.
- 52:03So whether you believe it or not is that they are preparing a
- 52:07formal approach. A formal approach has not been
- 52:09made yet, but apparently they're contacting former United players
- 52:14Beckham, Rooney, Rio were name dropped as part of that and
- 52:18apparently, yeah, a bid is being prepared.
- 52:20So we. Obviously.
- 52:22Is this the same Rio who said like Qatar's done?
- 52:25It is? Yeah, it's done.
- 52:27OK, that's the same Rio. See the rumour mill started.
- 52:29I think August was all was obviously a crucial time because
- 52:32we knew those drag along rights were coming into play.
- 52:34So the ownership talk has started to heat up again.
- 52:38I think it's still early days. But even that result I think is
- 52:42pivotal for the owners to be honest.
- 52:44So I'm not getting excited just yet, but I did always say things
- 52:48would start heating up. So yeah, I don't know where
- 52:52where it's going to go. We'll have to wait and see.
- 52:54But yeah, as any any thoughts as to Ineos?
- 52:57And the glaze is potentially cashing out?
- 52:59Could you see it happening? I don't think Jim wants to cash
- 53:03out for him. This is his legacy.
- 53:05But fundamentally, the Glazers still have the majority
- 53:08shareholding, right? That's the thing.
- 53:10Everyone goes in the US, Ineos, Ineos, Jim Ratcliffe is or Ineos
- 53:15are the biggest shareholder. But if you put the Glazer family
- 53:17shares together, right, they are the majority shareholder.
- 53:22And I think therefore that if a, the, the drag on clause
- 53:26essentially means that if they get a bid that matches that
- 53:29initial valuation, is it $33 per share that Jim has the matching
- 53:34option? But you know, they could, he
- 53:38could be bought out essentially, right, If he can't come up with
- 53:41the with the cash. Yeah, we'll see what happens.
- 53:46For me it's a lot of noise. I've always said to you I don't
- 53:50believe sake, just just him exists.
- 53:51I still don't believe he exists. I do think he was an AI or
- 53:55equivalent. I think it was all bullshit.
- 53:57And I know you were like oh he's from Qatar.
- 53:59You don't need proof of funds. That's not how.
- 54:02As someone who works in finance, I can tell you that's not how
- 54:04finance works. If you want to buy something for
- 54:075 billion, you need to prove that you have 5 billion.
- 54:10You don't just get your Dick. Out as well on that, Don't
- 54:13worry, I'm going to ask him. If you don't, Steve, yeah, I'm
- 54:17sorry, but but like, if you want to buy something and you're
- 54:19serious, like, yeah, you, you show who you are and you, you,
- 54:23you know, you put your you put your bid in properly and you go
- 54:25for it. For me.
- 54:29Again, this could just be a lot of noise and fluff.
- 54:32We'll see what happens. I don't want to get to involved
- 54:36in it. You know, I'm not a fan of that
- 54:38root of the sovereign wealth. It doesn't sit well with me.
- 54:41I don't like Saudi as a country. I don't like the UAE as a
- 54:45country. I don't like the people that run
- 54:47those countries. I don't like the things that
- 54:49they stand for. What about Jim Ratcliffe?
- 54:53Jim. Jim Ratcliffe.
- 54:54I I don't have. He's just another average
- 54:57billionaire to me. I quite like him.
- 54:59He. He what?
- 55:00About him revealing the fact that he's going to be meeting
- 55:03Nigel Farage ahead of Christmas. Yeah, that's the thing.
- 55:06He said you're a typical billionaire who I who I, who I
- 55:08don't like for their billionaire states.
- 55:10But as a person, when I listened to him in an interview, like,
- 55:13yeah, you're right, we've hadn't heard any.
- 55:14I hate the Glazers. This whole, you know, I think
- 55:17you did it. Did you do a survey on on our
- 55:19WhatsApp group on Glazers versus and what was the results in the
- 55:23end? What was the first question and
- 55:25what were the options and what were the results?
- 55:28Yeah. So essentially it was how, how
- 55:31do you think Ineos had been performing?
- 55:33And I'd done a scale from basically bad to good, like 5
- 55:37options. And the majority, I mean, you
- 55:39know, there wasn't loads that responded, but the majority.
- 55:42So I think there was around 12 responses and eight said awful,
- 55:48worse than the Glazers. Yeah, I just think these eight
- 55:51people are idiots, right? Whoever you are, if you're
- 55:53listening, you know, oh, and one, OK, one here.
- 55:58I mean, I just don't understand that how, how, how can it be?
- 56:01How can it be worse than the guys who put 500 million of debt
- 56:05or more on our club and basically did all?
- 56:08These other because because this one is had disastrous sporting
- 56:13results and gutted the club and gutted the culture, gutted
- 56:17everything because. They're in a rebuild.
- 56:19That's how you do a rebuild. You gut things out and you
- 56:21rebuild them. No, not to this extent.
- 56:23And, and can you prove the counterfactual?
- 56:25If the glazes were also in charge, it wouldn't have even
- 56:28been any worse. It's just.
- 56:29Yeah, I can actually. I can actually.
- 56:30Also, I've got you just making. I've run a.
- 56:34Simulation. I've run a simulation.
- 56:37No, you can't. You're so obligated to put that
- 56:39300 million in. That was part of the IT wasn't
- 56:42like Jim just like gave a cheque and just like, Oh yeah, this is
- 56:45it. I've got 18 years of evidence of
- 56:47the Glazer. For the for the shares and that
- 56:49and that was it. It's.
- 56:50Called no, it's called equity investment, one of the Glazer.
- 56:53Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 56:55Extra money that. You're saying no, I'll say it's
- 56:57all obligated. Can we prove the alternative?
- 56:59Yes, we had the alternative 18 years.
- 57:02The last 10 years have been without Fergie.
- 57:04So don't give it the Fergie excuse.
- 57:05The Glazer's always finished between 1st and 8th.
- 57:09Under Ineos we finished 15th and lost the European finance for
- 57:12Spurs. So there's your proof my.
- 57:14Friend managed by Ange, The Biggest Loser.
- 57:17Going yeah, I I don't accept that because you just don't know
- 57:20what would have happened. What, you mean we've got the
- 57:24evidence? No, because So what?
- 57:26We would have got relegated instead of finishing 15th under
- 57:29the Glazers? Possibly, yeah.
- 57:31You just don't know because The thing is the club has been on a
- 57:33downward. Then you just don't know.
- 57:34You could become a billionaire tomorrow then.
- 57:36Before the Ineos situation came in, I was telling you guys we
- 57:40are in big, big trouble. Post COVID, yeah, no, but we
- 57:46were whoever the owner was. And I was telling you guys, we
- 57:49need new ownership. We are in big trouble, big
- 57:52financial trouble. Also.
- 57:53We were being run unbelievably poorly.
- 57:56Yeah, you can say that we've had one season of bad results, yes,
- 58:00but that. Not bad, not bad, awful.
- 58:03Disastrous. Yeah, absolutely disaster.
- 58:06That doesn't mean it couldn't. It couldn't have been worse and
- 58:09I don't understand how. It wouldn't have been worse.
- 58:11Come on. It wouldn't have been worse it.
- 58:12Was to relegate there's ten years of place as evidence.
- 58:15Been relegated. There's ten years of evidence.
- 58:18They were running on the fumes of Fergie when when Fergie left.
- 58:22Not come on, not even 10 Hog. This is like 2 years ago. 10 Hog
- 58:25finished third. That was a purely of the glazes
- 58:28and Fergie was long gone and we'd recycled multiple players
- 58:31out of the club. So you can't.
- 58:33You can't say that's running. Off the things that 10 Hog did
- 58:37are the reason we finished 15th. That's the thing you guys can't
- 58:40understand. The signings of the Antony's and
- 58:43the Casamiros are. No, no.
- 58:45The Hoylands, The Hoylands, The Hoylands.
- 58:47You pick Toyland over cane. You pick Toyland over Cane.
- 58:52One part we're going to have to go through this because you keep
- 58:54saying the same thing and I'm like, I, I, I, I don't bother
- 58:57with it because you're just a kid to me.
- 58:58You're a child is being immature.
- 59:00I never picked Toyland over Cane.
- 59:01We'll go through it properly. I obviously said we should buy
- 59:05Kaiser or Rice in that window. I didn't know who Rasmus
- 59:08Highland was, so they keep going on.
- 59:10So why? Why would you recommend him?
- 59:11Why would you recommend him? Overcame, then I didn't.
- 59:14That's what I mean. You've made this up.
- 59:16I've sent the receipts, Toyland was.
- 59:18I've sent the receipts. Backed him.
- 59:20I've sent the receipts. I've sent the receipts.
- 59:23You said like pay the money. You were like I've sent the
- 59:25receipts. I've sent the receipts.
- 59:26Argument about it that I that I went before we signed Toyland.
- 59:29Oh, you we should sign this guy called literally mate.
- 59:32You, you actually you were with you.
- 59:34We did a spreadsheet. We said we should sign Taram as
- 59:36a striker to back up Marcus Rashford, who should become the
- 59:39main striker, right And we should sort out central midfield
- 59:43and to this day we should sort out central midfield.
- 59:46So this is the thing. The decision making previously
- 59:50was poor. For the first time any of us
- 59:53have had a proper window with a structure in place.
- 59:55We've what just gone to Anfield that that Brian and Boomo and
- 59:59Matthias Cunya and our Newman Lamongs have delivered
- 1:00:04beautifully. Give it a bit of time.
- 1:00:07Let's be positive. We've got a new stadium that
- 1:00:10might that is still. Being worked on all these years
- 1:00:12of glazes, they didn't even look at the same design.
- 1:00:15I've literally yeah, but they're actually trying.
- 1:00:18They're trying and they've literally got, as I mentioned
- 1:00:21post this Anfield game, gone back to the brand new 50 million
- 1:00:25Carrington, gone into their new ice baths and now they were
- 1:00:28complaining about. Obligated.
- 1:00:31I think you're missing the point.
- 1:00:32It was it's it was part of the investment.
- 1:00:35It was money saying it's obligated.
- 1:00:37So like they had to do it like otherwise they wouldn't have the
- 1:00:39shares. This is not the point.
- 1:00:42Part of the bid was to say I want investment.
- 1:00:45Jim has provided Cash, Cash, but.
- 1:00:48They would have got it from somewhere else if would.
- 1:00:51You preferred private equity or more debt.
- 1:00:53Is that what you want? Well, is that what you want?
- 1:00:55I don't know. I don't know if this is that
- 1:00:57much better given what you've done to the club.
- 1:01:00Well, if you recognise that the club is if you want, if you
- 1:01:03want. To recognise the culture of the
- 1:01:05clubs being destroyed. If we had someone, we have
- 1:01:08someone in the inside track within like, you know, like the
- 1:01:11building industry who told us how NES gutted, you know, all
- 1:01:16these like sites that they took over in the 90s.
- 1:01:20And that guy said he's doing exactly the same at Old Trafford
- 1:01:24with a football club. You've even had Kiera McGuire
- 1:01:26say that he's managing Manchester United like a
- 1:01:30chemicals plant. So how can you not recognise
- 1:01:33that you're the one who seems to?
- 1:01:35Recognise that, but I won't change.
- 1:01:37I feel that we've been an old decrepit organisation living in
- 1:01:40like a as a club and not a proper business.
- 1:01:42And this and I agree, he's gone too far.
- 1:01:44He's made too many harsh decisions.
- 1:01:46But as many cuts as he's made, you know what we'll do on the
- 1:01:49next pod, We'll come up a list of all the new hires.
- 1:01:51He's hired a lot of new people as well.
- 1:01:53He's bought in new societies as well in Man City people.
- 1:01:56We'll go through that in we'll go through that in the next pod.
- 1:01:59We'll talk about it in depth. We're going to talk about the
- 1:02:02you know, you can joke about the stadium, but at least there's an
- 1:02:05attempt. The glaze is let let.
- 1:02:07There's rats running around. They put a designer, they put a
- 1:02:12designer after. What if the glaze is done
- 1:02:14without Trafford? Nothing Look, you know my
- 1:02:17opinion on that, right? I'm one of the biggest fans of
- 1:02:20old traffic. What do they do with carrying
- 1:02:21what the Glazers have done is is disgrace like, but in terms of
- 1:02:25the stadium, it's like they put the designs out in March.
- 1:02:29A fucking idiot could have told you that you can't do a few of
- 1:02:33the things that they try to do, and I like that.
- 1:02:36So then so them trying to be like, now we're going to read
- 1:02:40and look, you're going to say, oh, good on them, but what's the
- 1:02:45point? It's like saying like, let's go
- 1:02:46for the moon and you know, I don't have.
- 1:02:49Pressure on the. How am I going to go?
- 1:02:51But how am I going to get to the moon without rocket fuel?
- 1:02:54And that's what they're doing with like, even with this
- 1:02:56design, it's like. Because you know, you come up
- 1:02:59with some French tangent freight freight company with the land
- 1:03:02that that we need to to buy putting Rep pressure.
- 1:03:04Around these are the. Guys in the government to yeah.
- 1:03:07But yeah, but these guys have done that, right?
- 1:03:09Like they put the pressure on the government, the government
- 1:03:11working. On the bottom, and I think
- 1:03:13there's my thought, I think part of the rumours around this
- 1:03:15investment could be around stadium.
- 1:03:17Yeah, it might not be buying the club.
- 1:03:19It could be they look gone to the Middle East and go right,
- 1:03:21we're trying to build a new stadium.
- 1:03:23Do you want to, you know, partner in some way to get
- 1:03:26financing? Because it's going to cost a lot
- 1:03:28of money, going to have lots of different.
- 1:03:31Finances, that's a big possibility and also they've
- 1:03:33just, you know, just put a survey out to season ticket
- 1:03:36holders and they've asked about loads of options like would you
- 1:03:39be willing to pay a licence to have your seat?
- 1:03:43So possibly these survey results will feed into the investment in
- 1:03:47terms of, you know, going out to investors and saying, Oh yes, we
- 1:03:49have got X amount of season ticket holders willing to do
- 1:03:52this. So there's stuff happening in
- 1:03:53the background. So I think, yeah, it's its own.
- 1:03:55Podcast, you just need a bit of time.
- 1:03:57We'll discuss it in more depth yeah as it as it develops.
- 1:04:02But you know the whole 3 year thing it's seriously it's I said
- 1:04:06with the staging, I said to you guys, it's 10 years.
- 1:04:09It's not five years. They're staying five years, but
- 1:04:11it's going to take 10. But if it gets built in 10, I
- 1:04:13take it. Yeah, of course I take 10 years.
- 1:04:16And also it's what's the goal rate?
- 1:04:18Minimum three years to win the league, possibly longer.
- 1:04:20But you know, in the meantime, we want competence.
- 1:04:22And it was not competent last year.
- 1:04:24There's signs it could be competent this year.
- 1:04:26Let's not get too excited. Let's beat Brighton on the
- 1:04:29weekend and let's go from there. Take it game by game, right as
- 1:04:32the old adage goes. Yeah, and I assume Steve, you,
- 1:04:36you, you love your boxing and you love your Middle Eastern
- 1:04:39money. So you're, you're, you're
- 1:04:41getting excited about this potential.
- 1:04:44I'm not getting too excited. I think it's early days, but I
- 1:04:47always said wait, wait and see this season because I always
- 1:04:51thought there was new investors come in and I still think the
- 1:04:53finances of the club aren't great.
- 1:04:54They're obviously better because they've reduced the cost base
- 1:04:57through the redundancies etcetera.
- 1:04:59But there's still a lot of debt on the club.
- 1:05:01We're not making profit. Any of these core businesses are
- 1:05:04failing. Well, you know, reducing in
- 1:05:07terms of profit, you know, they're, they're not paying
- 1:05:10dividends, for example. So yeah, I was, you know, I'd
- 1:05:12say there's, it's a, it's a murky world out there right now.
- 1:05:16So I think something could happen, but we'll have to wait
- 1:05:19and see. So.
- 1:05:20Give your mate Eddie Hearn a call.
- 1:05:22He he knows, right? I told you, Steve, didn't I like
- 1:05:25when you were banging on about Qatar and you know, fake shake
- 1:05:28Jaseem, I was like, actually your best chance is Saudi and
- 1:05:33there's no smoke without fire in terms of like, why would you put
- 1:05:37that tweet out? That's all I'm saying.
- 1:05:38Like I'm a bit like with us in that, to be honest, we've seen
- 1:05:43this before as well, whether it's I think Saudi have been
- 1:05:46linked to us before. I think it was about 20/12/13
- 1:05:49time. Abraham's got big links.
- 1:05:54Abraham Glaze has got big links into Saudi, but I'm kind of
- 1:05:57curious that he's put these tweets out.
- 1:06:00So I feel like something might be like coming up, maybe it
- 1:06:04might be, it might be in a year or two, because he's going to go
- 1:06:08after everything. He's going to go after Formula
- 1:06:11One. He's obviously got goal.
- 1:06:13He's got tennis by the balls. And yeah, he's obviously done a
- 1:06:17deal with Eddie Hearn on the boxing and the darts and
- 1:06:20sneakers. So Saudi are coming and if it
- 1:06:25funds the stadium and gives me. The best football.
- 1:06:28Team on the in the world, I don't like them as a country and
- 1:06:31what they stand for, but I I need my Man United back.
- 1:06:36So yeah, I mean, I, I did, I do think, yeah.
- 1:06:40It was weird for him to put it out unless there's something
- 1:06:42happening, so that's the only thing I'm taking from it really.
- 1:06:46But what's interesting is I'm sure you've seen the clip of
- 1:06:48Fergie and Kenny Dagley sharing chocolate buttons at Anfield.
- 1:06:53Have you seen it? Did you see?
- 1:06:56Did you see who? Did you see?
- 1:06:57Who was sitting? In front of them.
- 1:07:00No one, no one noticed that I saw.
- 1:07:02It on Twitter today it was Brian Glaser.
- 1:07:05Sitting in front of them so, you know, they're still prominent.
- 1:07:08I couldn't recognise Brian Grey in the line.
- 1:07:10Yeah, I was going to say I didn't see.
- 1:07:12The Ineos lot I just didn't see Hazard.
- 1:07:14There, it's Havy that looks. It's Havy that looks like a
- 1:07:17freak. Isn't it so Yeah, but he just
- 1:07:20just quickly on Ineos strikes Steve.
- 1:07:22I don't know if we've. Touched upon it on previous pods
- 1:07:24the fact that Jason Wilcox is saying that when he joined
- 1:07:28United he didn't realise how big we were that worries me yeah
- 1:07:31well I've I've got a load more to say but I'm going to save it
- 1:07:34for the next pod because we're. Going to do a deep dive into
- 1:07:36this ownership situation, the structural international break.
- 1:07:39Yeah. What's What's your view on
- 1:07:41chocolate buttons, by the way? Solid.
- 1:07:45I'm not. I think they're.
- 1:07:46OK, I think I can be better. Fergie, Yeah.
- 1:07:49Dairy Milk. Though, right, we've had this.
- 1:07:51Discussion solid. Solid.
- 1:07:53It's it's, it's fair, fair. But yeah, it's quite.
- 1:07:56Basic for a for a for a villier, isn't it Filling out the
- 1:07:59chocolate buttons? I love that.
- 1:08:01Well, that's because Jim took his salary away.
- 1:08:04Yeah, exactly. Can't afford anything.
- 1:08:06He was on the hotel chuckle. Out before that?
- 1:08:08Yeah, exactly. Right.
- 1:08:10We'll wrap it up there. Look.
- 1:08:12We won at Anfield. It's been a long time coming.
- 1:08:15I'm going to finish my cake up. The fucking Reds.
- 1:08:19We'll see you on the next podcast.
- 1:08:21Hopefully. We've beaten Brighton and we may
- 1:08:24just have a very interesting guest on the next podcast.
- 1:08:28So you have to tune in for that one.
- 1:08:30So thanks for listening and we'll catch you on the next one.
