Transcript
- 0:00Okay, my name to Camp and are playing a band from album called Buddy
- 0:05Joe. We've been around for a while, played punk rock, and we're
- 0:09doing a tour with one of our favorite bands, Gyroscope, who sort of
- 0:13came up at the same time as us, I guess in early two thousands
- 0:15or whatever, and they're celebrating ten years of their album Breed Obsession, and
- 0:20we're celebrating twenty five years of No Touch Red, which is I guess the
- 0:24album that a lot of people like to hear life. So yeah, So
- 0:27we're doing this big tour in September. We're coming to Cool Coolie and Brisbane
- 0:32and we're Melvin Sidney, Perth, Adelaide, Tazzi. So yeah, should
- 0:37be good, beautiful game. Thanks for joining us today, Buddy, No
- 0:40worries. I'm not sure if you're gonna want to hear this a lot,
- 0:43mate, But I started googled body Jar just before to try and get a
- 0:45few few facts right before we chatted, and you come up under pop music?
- 0:50Was that? Sorry? Have up under pop music? Oh? Really?
- 0:54Yeah? I hope I got the right band, but yeah, it
- 0:57was definitely you. Oh once, I don't know, probably, yeah,
- 1:03I don't know, I guess it's got pop elements to it. It's it's
- 1:07it's got melodies, you know pop though, no way in the world,
- 1:12no, it's weird. Oh well, I guess you get it. As
- 1:17long as he getting mentioned, I guess doesn't matter. True, as he
- 1:21said, road bodyge I hit the road for a dual anniversary chour with Gyroscope,
- 1:25starting in Sydney on September the first, before going through Brisbane, Gold
- 1:29Coast, Perth, Bunbrie, Hobart, Adelaide and finishing in Melbourn on September
- 1:32sixteen. So not far off. Maybe you packed and ready to go?
- 1:37H not quite yet. I usually do my packing the morning that we go,
- 1:40which really freaks out my wife. But yeah, I just but we're
- 1:44all we're jammed up. We've been practicing, We've been like running through the
- 1:48odd songs and making sure we've got a few, you know, a little
- 1:51surprises for the crowds and stuff, and some of the Melbourne shows, some
- 1:55of the ex members and stuff will be getting up to do a few songs
- 1:57and you know, so I feel mentally prepared, musically prepared, and you
- 2:04know, I think the rest of us, I think we're rare and to
- 2:06go. We've been planning this for a while and it's you know a lot
- 2:08of the shows are sold out and everything, so we're, you know,
- 2:12we're we're hoping for a banger, you know. Yeah, And of course
- 2:17you were celebrating the twenty fifth anniversary of the album No Touch Red, so
- 2:21you're going to be playing that in fall, I believe. Yeah, we'll
- 2:23do that all for full, in full, start to finish, and then
- 2:27we just do whatever people want to hear or whatever populous songs people want to
- 2:30hear, you know, not the same one in a million, you know,
- 2:32Surrender, all those sort of I guess songs people want to hear.
- 2:36Whatever people yell out, we'll just play it. That was it difficult to
- 2:40actually do that, bro? Like when you wrote the album, I couldn't
- 2:43imagine you ever thought you'd be playing at front to back one day, so
- 2:45you would have done things that maybe, Yeah, yeah it is. It's
- 2:49it's difficult playing an album that you made twenty five years ago because I don't
- 2:53know, you wrote songs differently back then, so you're like, wow,
- 2:55how do we do that bit? And how the hell are we doing?
- 2:58You know, why does that big going to that bit. It's weird,
- 3:00so you do have to practice. It's one of those things like people are
- 3:01like, oh, you can just get out there and play, but nah,
- 3:04it's it's a it's an album that we haven't played much of. We
- 3:07play usually live, we play remote control or you say, so, we
- 3:09maybe play three songs off that album, but now we've got to play all
- 3:13twelve of them, So you've got to You've got to practice it. I
- 3:15got to sit at home. I've created a little space where I can just
- 3:19jam it out. We've got a stereo in an app and I can just
- 3:22sit there and learn it or you know. So it's just like relearning stuff
- 3:27that you actually created, which is kind of weird, but in a way,
- 3:30it makes you sort of realize what your band's all about. You sort
- 3:34of do you sort of do get a new sort of I guess, a
- 3:38new liking for where you came from sort of thing, or you just understand
- 3:40it a little bit better because you've gone back over your past a bit,
- 3:43if you know what I mean. True, Yeah, that album came out
- 3:46in nineteen eighty eight, bro, so I can't add up. So that's
- 3:52what they call your pop music. They have. Yeah, that might be
- 3:55it might be the other pop pop band. But what position was Bodies Are
- 4:00In at that time made? And how did that album impack your career?
- 4:05Well, it was the first album that that sort of got any radio and
- 4:10it was weird it was. That was our third album, so our first
- 4:12two album first album was produced by Bill and Stephen from Descendants and we probably
- 4:16weren't ready for that, and the second album was really fast and technical,
- 4:20and this album, I think we found a good balance, you know,
- 4:24and it got a bit of radio, and we made videos for it,
- 4:27and you know, it really kind of set us on our path. And
- 4:30we also we toured Japan and America and a few other places with it.
- 4:33So it was the first album that got any real kind of success, I
- 4:36guess. So maybe that's why people people like it so much. And it
- 4:44was recorded in Montreal, Canada at the Moron Hype Studio. So back then
- 4:48recording overseas wasn't really that big a thing as it is day. So why
- 4:51did you choose Canada to do that? Because we wanted to use this guy,
- 4:55Jim Munroe, who just produced an album called rig by a band called
- 4:59fast Sight, who we loved and that they were on Revelation, which is
- 5:02like a really really well respected hardcore or label from New York, and that
- 5:06we were on that they released the album before this One Room Shot. So
- 5:10we wanted to record this album with that producer, and he was American,
- 5:15and I think it was easier to get him to go to Canada where we
- 5:16were on tour already doing the snow Jam tour, and to record the album
- 5:21at the end of that tour and get him to fly to Canada and meet
- 5:25us at this studio. So that just seemed like a better plan than getting
- 5:28all of us to America to do it at his place, you know.
- 5:30So, but that studio is rad It's where Cory Hame recorded Sunglasses at Night,
- 5:36I mean Corry Hart, and it's where the Police recorded Synchronicity there and
- 5:42Police recorded a few albums, and it's actually a really famous studio if you
- 5:45google it, and there's a there's a bakery because it's French Canada, so
- 5:49there's a bakery up the road called King of Pain and pain is like bread
- 5:54French for bread, and that's where that's where Sting got the name for the
- 5:58Police song King of Pain. Yea. Yeah, it's cool, and you
- 6:01know it's on the edge of this river. It was winter, so I
- 6:03was snowing. We could row this boat across the river to the studio every
- 6:09morning because we were staying in the stockhouse. It was gnarly. It was
- 6:12our first time we'd ever experienced like world class studio. I mean they had
- 6:15people there that could get you anything. Like every day this girl would come
- 6:18and go, guys, what do you want? And we're like, I
- 6:21can you get me some weed or you know, some buds or something.
- 6:24She could really that's all. You don't want anything else? Or nah,
- 6:28She's like, you could get anything you want. You know, holy shit,
- 6:32this is full. No, just get us, like, you know,
- 6:35some fruit, juice and some weed. You know, that'll be satisfy.
- 6:42I don't believe you. Also drunk out of stings coffee cup and played
- 6:45his taps with tambourine. We paid his tambarine, yeah, I was sitting
- 6:47there, and his coffee cup. Yeah. There was a few like really
- 6:50cool objects that other bands had used in there. I mean, I think
- 6:54the BJ's recorded Saturday Night Fever there. There was a couple of little things
- 6:59that they left behind and we stayed in the same place the Police stayed at
- 7:01and because I was a massive at the time and I still am, I
- 7:04guess I was a big fan of the Police, so it was a big
- 7:08deal to me that they'd recorded there. Yeah, it was just a cool
- 7:12little experience. You know. It nearly didn't happen because when we got there
- 7:15the first day we were loading in Grant, the bass player, he slammed
- 7:18our drummer's hand in the car door. It was like a tarago with the
- 7:21sliding door and he's whacked it and it nearly broke his hand. We thought
- 7:27we were fucked, like we can't record the album, but for some reason
- 7:30it didn't break his hand. It was we got away with it then,
- 7:35So lucky kid. So do you remember what your actual thoughts were on the
- 7:42album once it was finished? So did you think it was going to be
- 7:45a ground breaker? Player? I thought it was definitely rawer and fast because
- 7:48we've just come off to her. We were raw, like we were playing
- 7:51really fast and we were tight, and it was it was a raw sounding
- 7:56album, and I thought that's probably what we need to do, like,
- 7:59let's just keep it super raw. And we didn't finish at all. Our
- 8:03engineer was just on, just doing a lot of coke, and at the
- 8:07end of it he just passed out and we could not wake him up.
- 8:11We had two days left and he just slept the whole time. We had
- 8:15to We had to finish it off in Melbourne. We did the last little
- 8:18bit at Sing Sing like, We did some baselines, did some overdiles,
- 8:20and then we sent it to Bill and Stephen from Descendants to mix it at
- 8:24their studio. And I remember them sending us little mixes on cassettes, like
- 8:28sending us a little mix and then we had to write notes and then give
- 8:31them a call to change little things. And it was it was a different
- 8:35time, you know. Before that, I guess we didn't even really have
- 8:37the Internet to you know, to listen to mixes and stuff. So we
- 8:41just did it all, you know, by mail. So so yeah,
- 8:46very cool. What about now, what are your thoughts on it now?
- 8:48Twenty five years later? I still did it. I mean, obviously there's
- 8:52things I can't work out, there's things that I probably wouldn't do now.
- 8:56But I think it's got its charm. It's got it's got some cool,
- 9:00cool little songs and cool parts like it'll have like a verse chorus and a
- 9:03little extra bit doesn't probably need to be there, but it's there because we
- 9:07could do it, you know, it was it was cool. It didn't
- 9:09have any A and R people from the record company, no one interfered in
- 9:13it. We just did exactly what we wanted to do, you know,
- 9:16so it's really pure. I think it's cool. I dig it. I
- 9:20sort of touched on this before. But every classic Australian band has got that
- 9:24one song they have to do live, like Screaming Jets has got better,
- 9:26Paul has got the vinyls that I touched myself, like which one is yours
- 9:31would be not the same? Or one in a million, Yeah, it's
- 9:33probably not the same. One in a million. And Hazy Shade a winner,
- 9:37you know that seemed like the three but we were lucky. On the
- 9:41last album. We've got this song called Surrender that we've been finishing with and
- 9:45that a lot of people ask for that, which is which is good because
- 9:46it's not often you get to play get your new stuff. But we've got
- 9:50this album called New Rituals and it's got that, and it's got Rain which
- 9:54is a cover from a Dragon cover and so we do those live and they
- 9:58go down pretty good too. But yeah, we're lucky we've got a couples.
- 10:01I guess it's good just to have those, you know what I mean,
- 10:05You've just got to, you know, be grateful that you've you've you've
- 10:07got them, you know, so not the same. Yeah, you're probably
- 10:09right, it's not the same. Do you ever be ever do shows when
- 10:13you just think, fuck it, I'm not going to play it. See
- 10:15what the audience thinks now, because I hate it when bands do that.
- 10:18I hate it when bands, you know, going on, we're not going
- 10:20to play our big single. I was like, well, fuck, you
- 10:22know, like so many people want to hear it, and you know,
- 10:26it probably made you a lot of money and it made you what you are
- 10:28now. So you've got to have a bit of respect to the audience.
- 10:31And I think you've got to play your hits if that if that's what,
- 10:33if that's what you want to call them. You know, remember Dave Gleason
- 10:37tell me once it since Betty came out, they haven't done one show.
- 10:39Oh they haven't played better. That's good. A lot of bat Man I
- 10:43respect that good. He knows people want to hear it and he wants to
- 10:46put it on a good show for him, you know. So yeah that's
- 10:50cool, Yeah, very cool. And your touring partners, guys is a
- 10:54Gyroscope or Gyroscope Gyroscope Ascope celebrate fifteen years of their album Breed Obsession by doing
- 11:00a similar thing. So yeah, the reasoned that album Snake Skin and like
- 11:05it's just it's a corker. I love that band. They're my favorite,
- 11:09probably my favorite Uzzi band. So they've got they've got a couple of really
- 11:13good albums. That album went Gold. It's got some When you see them
- 11:18play love one of those bands where it's like every song you know but you
- 11:20didn't realize you knew it, you know what I mean. So they've probably
- 11:24got six or seven songs you go, oh fuck, yeah, that's that's
- 11:26right, you know. And they just live. They're just super good,
- 11:31super good live band, really good singer, like yeah, just and really
- 11:35funny dudes. I love them and we get along. Well. We did
- 11:39like a little run of shows with them maybe three months ago in your South
- 11:41Wales. We just did three three shows. One was on a boat in
- 11:45Sydney Harbor and one was in Moreland Gold Mom was in Newcastle and they all
- 11:48went really well. I think the crowds because we both came up at the
- 11:50same time. It's a similar kind of crowd. So it just works good.
- 11:56We're just taking it in turn and so they'll headline one night, we'll
- 11:58headline the next night, you know. Yeah, it works out good.
- 12:01Oh so that's all one's up on September sixteen. What's the next for Body's
- 12:05Jar? After that, start doing a new album. So yeah, it's
- 12:09been over it years to tell lust one. So we've got to start,
- 12:11you know, rehearsing, writing songs and you know the usual ship, try
- 12:15and get something up to scratch, you know, which takes a while.
- 12:18Now before I let you go, Cab, we're starting up three news Spotify
- 12:22playlists through heavy and we're getting the artists to select the song, so using
- 12:26your own songs. They give us one song that's going to get you ready
- 12:31to party, yeah, one song that's going to save your marriage, and
- 12:35one one a song that could potentially end your marriage. Shit, well not
- 12:39the same could definitely end your marriage, yeah, because it's it's basically a
- 12:43sour grapes. You know, you're not the person I'm believed in yesterday.
- 12:48Hope Was Leaving is a song I wrote for my then partner is now my
- 12:52wife, So I would say that that could that could be good for your
- 12:54relationship. Hope was Leaving, It's off, It's off role model and probably
- 12:58it's someone wants to get your party and is surrender off. The last album
- 13:03just got a real up to the vibe. It's cool all right. Well,
- 13:07thanks for your time today, brother, Sure with a Gyroscope starts on
- 13:11September first, so you get your tickets now from all the usual outlets,
- 13:15mate, and we'll see you either the Brisbane or the Gold Coach Show.
- 13:18Brother. Awesome mate, thanks for having us my pleasure brother. You take
- 13:22care so seam mate,
