- 2:21You probably heard us, Carrie and the Jeff on the Morning News talking about
- 2:23this program that they've got. They had a signing day. It was like
- 2:28you were watching ESPN yesterday, man, watching all these would be nurses signing
- 2:34onto this program that they've got at Bridge Valley. So there's all these exciting
- 2:37things going on at Bridge Valley. Doctor Casey Sachs is going to join us
- 2:39to talk about that. Plus your calls and texts are welcome to. I
- 2:44want to welcome in now though, my good friend Millie Snyder from the Shape
- 2:47Shop here in Charleston. Milly, Happy Honukah, Merry Christmas, Happy New
- 2:52Year, and all the other pleasantries that you deserve on this cold winter morning,
- 2:57one day officially away from the start of winter or tomorrow, right that's
- 3:01the twenty. First, yes, yeah, well I'll be sure to bundle
- 3:05up. Well, you need to bundle up in here because it's a little
- 3:07cold and is funny, so somebody forgot to pay the bill. We're working
- 3:10on it. We're working on it. The parts are ordered, as it's
- 3:14you well, and it's Christmas season, so somewhere out there there are the
- 3:17parts to fix the heat. And as they say, they're en root,
- 3:23they're on root. Yeah, they're somewhere in Provo, Utah at this time,
- 3:25but trying to get them. It's it's nearby. But yeah, we're
- 3:29suffering a little bit myself. But as I told Jeff Jenkins earlier, we
- 3:34just got to put out more hot air. That's just why we had that.
- 3:37We had to put That's probably why you invited me today. That's exactly.
- 3:39No, that's not exactly why. How are you, melly? I'm
- 3:42wonderful and by the way, merry Christmas and all the good wishes to everyone
- 3:46who's listening, with the hope that in addition to a wonderful Christmas, we
- 3:52might see peace in those parts of our world that are under continent. I
- 3:57would one hundred percent agree with that. How are things at the Shape Shop
- 4:00wonderful, wonderful, And you know, there was an article that I want
- 4:03to sell it. That doesn't mean I'm closing, because I do not wish
- 4:08to put my life in danger. If I stop making dippy doos, I
- 4:12wouldn't be able to even go anywhere because people will be out for me.
- 4:15So we're not closing. We are only I'm only wanting to find out what
- 4:20it would be like to not work every day. And I go to work
- 4:24every day with joy in my heart. But the things that we make at
- 4:28the Shape Shop are unique and different. Yeah, we're a little bit off
- 4:30the beaten paths, but I wish people would see us as a destination because
- 4:35they will not regret it. Our food is it is unbelievably delicious, it
- 4:40is, it is frequently healthy. I frequently have lunch there and take things
- 4:45home from there, sometimes even pay for them. But I think that's really
- 4:50unusual. That's another story. But I want to ask you how are things
- 4:56going after the gas crisis there on the West Side, because no, and
- 4:59I want to tell you that I can relate with it being cold in here
- 5:00because we were really in a bad way. But you know, I had
- 5:04an interview with Channel thirteen and I said, you know, as bad as
- 5:09it is for us, so many other people are suffering far greater than we
- 5:14were. And we got our gas back on the day before Thanksgiving, but
- 5:18we couldn't make anything. We couldn't make muffins. The girls very creatively made
- 5:25vegetable soup out on the grill. I think I mentioned that Glass did and
- 5:30it was delicious soup. And last night I had our stuffed pepper soup for
- 5:33dinner. That stuff is not good. It is just absolutely delicious. Now
- 5:38I have to say, I'm a big stuff pepper guy. You got to
- 5:41buy this. I don't know that I've ever had stuff pepper soup. Well,
- 5:44we used to make green pepper soup. You know, a lot of
- 5:46people can't do well with the green pepper because it repeats on them until Thursday
- 5:51or Friday. So we repeats on them. Anthony repeats on them. But
- 5:57anyway, go ahead. In another world it's called the gesho. Okay,
- 6:00yeah, just leave it to that. But we use the red, yellow,
- 6:03and orange peppers now and we've recreated it and there's no you know,
- 6:09after burning in your chest because I don't know what it is in green peppers.
- 6:13I'm sure there's a whole study about that, but it's just delicious.
- 6:16And our meat is turkey, not beef, so the amount of fat,
- 6:23it's all skimmed off. We just make things that are healthy, delicious.
- 6:28Nothing is processed. Our turkey, our chicken is unbelievable. And you are
- 6:33a great fan of our fresh salmon. I am, I am. I
- 6:36love some salmon, and your salmon it is fantastic, absolutely the best.
- 6:40That's the key. I think a lot of people don't understand. It's not
- 6:44and I'm not a health expert by any stretch of the imagination, but it's
- 6:47not necessarily sometimes calories and fact, I mean that's bad too, but it's
- 6:53the way in the modern era and something that we've been doing for really for
- 6:58the most part, for the last fifty or sixty years and America. It's
- 7:00the way that we preserve food. Yes, and as they say, like
- 7:04when you go grocery shopping, they always say, you know you should,
- 7:08you know, skip the middle sections of the store and just go. You
- 7:11know, it's not about the meat necessarily, It's not about some of these
- 7:15it's the way it's prepared and the way it's preserved. That's causing a lot
- 7:18of these problems, and those chemicals are doing very very serious damage inside the
- 7:25body. The body when we when our creator made us, there were no
- 7:30provisions for all these strange ingredients, so the body harbors them and creates all
- 7:36kinds of maladies. And not until someone is stricken or someone is diagnosed with
- 7:43a problem, do they then want to look back and reflect on my eating
- 7:46habits. Well, because we know this, let's pay attention to it,
- 7:51eating better, eating healthy. I know it's Christmas. I don't think there's
- 7:57a pass passage in the Bible that says because we are celebrating the birth of
- 8:01Jesus that we need to pig out. I don't think there's a passage,
- 8:05But if I'm wrong, I want to be able to know what passes.
- 8:07But I think sometimes really it's part of our culture here in apple Agia too
- 8:11and in other areas. But yes, I mean, we don't want to
- 8:15blame, you know, originally I'm from Baltimore, and I have to tell
- 8:18you they did some pigging out there tall suah. Yeah. But my point
- 8:22is we need to do self preservation. And I mean Emily at our shop
- 8:28is creating muffins that are just driving people wild. They're so good, and
- 8:33there's no sugar, and sugar is not a friend. It tastes great in
- 8:37your mouth, but it's not a friend. And we want to be able
- 8:41to, you know, reflect that in terms of your health. And that's
- 8:46what we want the message to be. I love the store, I love
- 8:50the people, I love the things that we carry, but I want people
- 8:52to know there's a purpose behind it, and that is to help you be
- 8:56your best self. And I know that's a used express, all right,
- 9:00and that's true. But eight Island Show on five of the Life is brought
- 9:03to you apart by General Hardware and Number of Windfield. Get with them for
- 9:05a quote before you start your project. If you're tired of sorting through a
- 9:09bunch of crooked boards, get with General Hardware and Number of Windfield. They
- 9:11have the straight quality number you're looking for, with great pricing and the service
- 9:15you expect from a locally owned business. General Hardware and Number of Winfield.
- 9:18Let me get back to your business here now. You said that you want
- 9:22to sell the Shape Shop, but not close the Shape Shop. So how
- 9:26does one go If somebody's listening to me right now, and they I'm gonna
- 9:28play. I'm gonna play like my friend Rich, the realtor. I'm gonna
- 9:31be the real estate agent here. Okay. If somebody is listening right now,
- 9:33they're saying, well, that may be an interesting business proposition for me
- 9:37to take over the shape shop. What do they need to do? Call
- 9:39me just that simple, call you in and show up with a checkbook.
- 9:43No, let's not do the checkbook. Yes, but yes, I had
- 9:46to start the discussion. We would yes, we would like the check with
- 9:50give me the number, give me the number before we My direct number is
- 9:52three oh four five four one six one four six. The number for the
- 9:56Shape Shop is six eight one two six five three nine three eight, And
- 10:01just start that discussion. And you're getting a great business there, because you
- 10:05know it's a great business. Plenty of free parking there. That's always an
- 10:07issue in a city, is parking. No worries at all with it's a
- 10:11not a meter to be had, not a meter to be had over there
- 10:13in that part of town. But if they want to bring quarters, I'll
- 10:16take that. Yes, of course you will. Okay, uh so,
- 10:18uh uh, but but you're not here again, would maybe the newspaper article
- 10:24whatever kind of gave a mistaken impression that you were wanting to sell. You're
- 10:26not, I mean, or that you're wanting to close. You're not wanting
- 10:28to close. You're just looking for somebody basically to take over. A lady
- 10:31came in yesterday, she said, are you closing? I said, no,
- 10:35not at all. I'm going I want to sell. And that's it.
- 10:37Because you know, I have a new name now. I'm called an
- 10:41octogenarian. Mm hmmm. I've been called everything, but never that, okay,
- 10:45and that simply means that I'm in my eightieth year. Yeah. I
- 10:48like that commercial that' say age as a number in mind's unlisted. But I
- 10:52tell everybody. I tell everybody my age, So there's their secret. Other
- 10:58than the gas crisis. Put the kind of a rap on the year twenty
- 11:01twenty three. How was twenty twenty three for this? It was a wonderful
- 11:03year. We learned a lot, We've created some new things, and I'm
- 11:07just so grateful for the fact that you know I'm here and I'm doing this
- 11:13and my health is great. I want to attribute the fact that I'm healthy
- 11:18to what I preach and also the Mediterranean lifestyle we have groups on Thursday morning
- 11:24and Thursday afternoon, like people to find out about it and learn. And
- 11:30I put an emphasis on that word learn how to eat, not do it
- 11:33in an artificial way, because that's not the answer. And you know,
- 11:39with New Year's coming up, everybody's going to make a New Year's resolution.
- 11:41That's what they always do. My friends who spend a lot of time in
- 11:43the gym will say they call the first two weeks of January amateur hour,
- 11:48they said, because by about January tenth or eleventh, they're all gone there,
- 11:52you know. And actually I know friends who spend time at the gym
- 11:56that don't go at all doing They just work out at home or they do
- 11:58other exercise. They say, I'm staying away from the gym until January tenth,
- 12:01eleventh, twelfth, and then I'll come back because that's when all of
- 12:05the resolution errors are gone. Talk about though, with people set a goal,
- 12:11I don't think I can count to the to the number that I'd like
- 12:15to be able to give you. Over the years of my career with weight
- 12:18Watchers and of course now Mediterranean, how many people have resolved as they bangle
- 12:26on their chest and swear that this is the time. The people who joined
- 12:31forty two times. Every time they said it, they meant it, but
- 12:35they let something get in the way. You know, the eating time that
- 12:39we're in right now really is called the trithecta because it began with Halloween.
- 12:45Then it's Thanksgiving, now it's Christmas. Maybe it's the quad secta because we
- 12:50have the food for New Years. We need to make better choices. And
- 12:56that's what it's all about, not give up eating. Yeah, but the
- 13:00resolve. It's not just and I think sometimes people think it's all about working
- 13:05out. I've got to go work out for five hours a day if you
- 13:09don't do the diet part of it, though, and watch what you eat,
- 13:13not only from a calorie standpoint, but also from is it actually good
- 13:18for you with the preservative and things we talked about earlier. Then all the
- 13:20I mean, you might have a big body, but the rest of it's
- 13:24going to go to heck in a handbasket if you don't have this. And
- 13:28eating is such a simple ingredient, breakfast, lunch, supper, things you
- 13:33can on Mediterranean. You'll eat better than you've ever eaten since you came onto
- 13:37this earth, and you won't starve and you can't use no. And also
- 13:41the eating habits your mother taught you, your grandmother influenced, and that wasn't
- 13:46healthy because those people save bacon grease on the top of their stove and they
- 13:50keep reusing it, and that makes heart attacks. It keeps the medical community
- 13:56very very busy. Oh my goodness. So I would say, let's take
- 14:01better care of ourself and start the new year with an attitude, and don't
- 14:07talk about it. Just do it. Don't say I'm making a new Year's
- 14:09resolution. Just be make a good choice, and if you like it,
- 14:15keep it going, keep it going, one hour at a time. One
- 14:20short story years ago, at weight Watchers, there was a lady who had
- 14:24a bad week at the scale and she remained after the meeting and I said
- 14:28to her, what's going on. She said, I didn't do well.
- 14:33I said, well, then just take it one day at a time.
- 14:35And she said to me, now you hold on, girley, And up
- 14:39to that point I had been called girly. She said, for me,
- 14:43it's one hour at a time. I never forgot that. And it's true.
- 14:50If that's the way we have to do it, let's do it,
- 14:52own it and be proud until our strength and our resolve strengthens. About people.
- 15:01This is about us eating better and it does make a difference at the
- 15:05end of the day. Great way to end it, Melli. So you
- 15:09want me to leave now? Yeah, yeah, I got somebody else give
- 15:13it up. But Mellie, always a pleasure to have you on the show.
- 15:16Happy New Year too, all of you folks at the Shape Shop.
- 15:20Oh yeah, I had a wonderful Honika with my family and it was just
- 15:24great. Okay, all right, and we'll be talking to you in the

- 19:15Sachs and the Sacks crew? My husband and our three dogs and I will
- 19:19drive down to his folks house and spend some time with them. It'll be
- 19:22really cool. What's the trip? And I like with the dogs. They're
- 19:26really good dogs. We're super lucky. So even though nobody likes to be
- 19:30in the car for any amount of time, they'll be fine. Well that's
- 19:33good. You know. I'd have to say if I was going to travel
- 19:37with dogs or kids, I think dogs. That's just me. Great point.
- 19:40You're awfully quiet, all right, So I want to talk about the
- 19:45year that was with Bridge Valley. But man, yesterday I was Mintinus on
- 19:48the air earlier with the folks that I'm listening this morning, coming in and
- 19:52Carrie Hoo, Dea Sec and Jeff are doing the morning news talking about big
- 19:56stuff out at Bridge Valley. I thought I was watching ESPN radio. We're
- 20:00watching television. I mean with the signing day, you had a signing day,
- 20:03yesha, explain it. We did. So. WVU Medicine has really
- 20:08stepped up as a wonderful employer to help support students at Bridge Valley. They've
- 20:12committed millions of dollars at this point to our students. Every semester they pay
- 20:18a group of students five thousand dollars just to be students. We saw that
- 20:22scholarships have a gap. All of the different kinds of financial aid we have
- 20:26have gaps for people. And one of the things that doctor Rosencrantz and I
- 20:30were talking about is that students could be a flat tire away from having to
- 20:33drop out of school. They're talented students, they belong at Bridge Valley,
- 20:37but they have life circumstances that can keep them out. And so WVU Medicine
- 20:41said, well, we need nurses and we're really willing to commit to keeping
- 20:45people in the program. So they've selected they selected ten last semester and fifteen
- 20:51this semester, and they're going to keep picking more and they're paying students to
- 20:55be students up to twenty five thousand dollars a person. I mean, that's
- 20:59that's incredible. I mean, it really really is. And you mentioned doctor
- 21:02Sachs that we desperately need, well, disparately need workers of all kinds,
- 21:06but we desperately need healthcare workers, especially with our aging population. Not just
- 21:11here in West Virginia, but I mean the population in general is aging everywhere,
- 21:15you know, and it's going to require more care. It's going to
- 21:18require more bodies. Healthcare is really an in demand field. We have the
- 21:22best to year Associates degree nursing program in the state. We're really proud of
- 21:26that, and it's wonderful. You can start in eleventh grade in high school.
- 21:30You can decide that you're going to come to high school at Bridge Valley
- 21:33and do what's called our Win Academy and do your r N degree, which
- 21:37is not something that's normally available to students as young as sixteen. But our
- 21:41hospital partners have really stepped up in a big way. And I think the
- 21:44signing ceremony yesterday with WVU Medicine is such a testament to that. Well,
- 21:48there's got to be a buy in from them too, And we've talked about
- 21:51this relationship that Bridge Valley has with various employers in the area because again it's
- 21:56kind of a different approach for higher education. You're going to the employers and
- 22:00saying, Okay, what do you need? As opposed to years it was
- 22:03the other way around. You know, now you're looking at at the camc's
- 22:07or WUCH or whatever the hospital is and look at them and say, okay,
- 22:11what do you need? What can we do to help? That's right,
- 22:12and we really feel like that's the responsible way to approach higher education,
- 22:18is that we want to make sure our students have good labor market employment outlook
- 22:22for themselves here in the valley once they graduate one of the programs. It's
- 22:26worth highlighting that everybody needs are medical laboratory technicians. We have an MLT program
- 22:32on campus, and it's hard to recruit people into because nursing's sort of intuitive.
- 22:36You met a nurse, they helped your mom when she was sick.
- 22:37You want to do that. It's a calling, as they say, it's
- 22:41really a calling. You don't think about gosh, I could look at germs
- 22:44under a microscope, but it's so important because how fun. You need to
- 22:48know what your pathology is. You need to know what's wrong with you.
- 22:51But that's one another one of those areas that hospitals are like, hey,
- 22:55can you make more people who have this MLT certification. So it's just another
- 23:00example of how healthcare really has demanded so many areas. Even if drawing blood
- 23:04from a human maybe isn't your thing, no order having it drawn. Doctor
- 23:07Ksey Sachs, Abridge Valley is here. I wanted to talk to you about
- 23:11a couple of things. One of those is I know that you have,
- 23:15as we said, we have various partnerships that you do the Bridge Valley does
- 23:18with the community from various companies, from the hospitals and the healthcare facilities in
- 23:22Toyota and Newcore and so on and so forth. But a week two ago,
- 23:27I think I had somebody on from the Putnam County Development Authority talking about
- 23:32a program that Bridge Valley is working on with him. It's called Fame.
- 23:37And then I had somebody text the show a couple of days ago and said,
- 23:38hey, you know, apparently there's somebody listening because they texted show and
- 23:44said, hey, I want more information about that, so can you give
- 23:47them. We had Morgan on from the Development Authority literally like two days before
- 23:52she had a baby. She came on the show. But let's talk about
- 23:56that program fame of what it means. So the West Virginia FAME program is
- 24:00a terrific program. Manufacturers in the area have gotten together as a consortium.
- 24:04They call themselves the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education Fame FAME, and that group
- 24:11of manufacturers has said, we don't want to steal talent from each other.
- 24:14We want to help grow our talent pool in the community for people who have
- 24:18advanced manufacturing technology skills. So they've recognized Bridge Valley as their education provider in
- 24:23the consortium. They recognize that we have an excellent advanced Manufacturing tech program and
- 24:29they want the people from our program. But they also recognize that they have
- 24:33some responsibility here too, that they need to help make sure people are in
- 24:36the program so that we have a pipeline of people who are getting the right
- 24:38skills. And then they also have really doubled down and made a commitment to
- 24:42students. Students who are selected for fame work three days a week at one
- 24:48of the companies that you highlighted, and they come to school two days a
- 24:51week at Bridge Valley, and the companies pay them to be employees. And
- 24:55almost all of the students get hired permanently by the companies that they've been placed
- 24:59with while they're in the program, that the company and the student figure out
- 25:02this is a really good match and that the student wants to stay there.
- 25:04And again, it's just another example of higher education working with employers here in
- 25:11the Kanaal Valley at in other areas and saying, Okay, what do you
- 25:15need? Again, None of this would be possible if it weren't for the
- 25:18wants and needs of these manufacturers to say we need people, and I mean
- 25:23to have a I mean, I tried to think about a hundred years ago
- 25:26when when I was just covered out of high school or whatever, thinking okay,
- 25:30you're going to basically pay for my education. Then you're gonna in most
- 25:33cases offer you the majority of cases, you're going to have a job waiting
- 25:38on you when you finish the program. That's pretty cool stuff. It is.
- 25:42It's wonderful our elected officials have actually done a great job in West Virginia
- 25:47coming up with a variety of ways to help that The state helps people pay
- 25:51for school, and it's because we recognize that you might not need four years
- 25:56of school, but you definitely need more than high school. And juring out
- 26:00how to fill that gap so that you get the certification and that you get
- 26:03the training that you need after high school so that you can get one of
- 26:06these good jobs in the area makes all the difference. And there are plenty
- 26:10of good jobs and plenty of good available jobs out there right now. They
- 26:15just need people that are trained to go to them. And we spend a
- 26:18lot of time docter sas talking about younger people because that's generally people that are
- 26:22trying to forge their career path. But it's not just about younger people so
- 26:26to speak. I mean, you've seen people and you talked about it last
- 26:30time. You were hear people looking for a second career. Gosh, that's
- 26:33so true. I mean, what they call non traditional students talk about that.
- 26:37So I mean, yesterday at the signing day, one of the students
- 26:40came up to me and she was the best part of my day yesterday.
- 26:42And what she said was, you know, I'm a single mom. I
- 26:45have four kids. My oldest is in college and my youngest is in preschool,
- 26:48and I want to be a nurse, and I couldn't figure out how
- 26:52to do it. Financial AIDS seemed out of reach. Being able to do
- 26:55the program seemed out of reach. And between what the WVU Medicine and Bridge
- 26:59Valley of together together to make this possible for me, it's a game changer.
- 27:04And we see that all the time. Our average age is thirty at
- 27:07Bridge Valley. We see adults who are coming back who have spent some time
- 27:11in retail, or spent some time in fast food or in kitchens somewhere in
- 27:17town. And that's great, and if it's what you want to do,
- 27:19terrific, more power to you. But often what I hear is people say,
- 27:23you know, I have kids, my life has changed, and I
- 27:26don't want to keep working in retail for the rest of my life. I
- 27:29want something that's more meaningful to me. And so they come back and do
- 27:33healthcare, manufacturing or it with us at Bridge Valley. And I have seen
- 27:37that happen so many times. And sometimes it's not necessarily a hardship case.
- 27:41It's just somebody they just get bored. You know this happened. This happened
- 27:45with a friend of our, of my family. The mom was a stay
- 27:51at home mom. The father worked in the manufacturing field, and the mother
- 27:56just basically said, I want to go do something else here. My kids
- 28:00are raised, my husband is not close to retirement age yet, I want
- 28:03to go do something else. And so in her forties, she decided,
- 28:07Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna go back to school and I'm going to become
- 28:08a nurse. To this day, now she's in her sixties and she's still
- 28:11on ours. I really applaud her. I think that's so brave, and
- 28:14I wish more people had that kind of gumption and bravery because I see women
- 28:19and men every day at Bridge Valley who are my age and I'm in my
- 28:22forties, and they're they're not my employees, they're my students. They're coming
- 28:26in and they're really changing their lives and frankly changing the lives for their whole
- 28:32family. Because if you think about if your mom had been a single mom
- 28:36and you know, you're raised and now you're working, and she says,
- 28:40gosh, I want to go back, I want to go back to school,
- 28:41and get more training. Maybe that inspires you, or maybe it inspires
- 28:45her grandkids to realize I can do it too. Yeah, I mean so
- 28:48many, so many success stories out there. And again we'll talk about quickly
- 28:52about the the IT programs that you offer out there. I mean I talk
- 28:57about them every day when you know, when you guys sponsor the show,
- 29:00and I read about these IT programs. But they're incredible what you're offering on
- 29:04the Oh gosh, they really are. And I think part of what's wonderful
- 29:07in it is that you can do a short term certification to get yourself in
- 29:12the door somewhere. That every single kind of business needs people who can do
- 29:17web design, who have cybersecurity skills, who understand how to do networking and
- 29:22basic support setup. You still have a lot of people in the workplace who
- 29:26struggle with some basic computer skills, and so having that tech person at any
- 29:30kind of business who can understand, let me set this up for you,
- 29:33let me make sure everything's working and that you don't have any computer viruses.
- 29:37Those are all short term kinds of skills that you don't have to go to
- 29:41school for four years to learn how to do. And so it makes it
- 29:44even more valuable that we can offer it right here in the valley. And
- 29:47for employers, I'll say this, at Bridge Valley, you folks are willing
- 29:51to tailor make the program for that particular employer. So it's not just a
- 29:56generic Okay, I've got a degree in some sort of IT, working with
- 30:00these companies and saying okay, Jones and Jones or whatever the case may be,
- 30:06we are going to tailor make this IT program for what your company needs.
- 30:11That's right, and that's actually something that we love to do at Bridge
- 30:14Valley because it means then that we have that employer partnership like the ones we've
- 30:18talked about earlier with WVU Medicine or with Toyota, that those are things that
- 30:22we've done in healthcare and in manufacturing. We really want that in IT.
- 30:26So if you are an employer who has an IT need, please reach out
- 30:30to us. We really want to be responsive because that means we can turn
- 30:33around and make sure that our students are getting employment that's really relevant and the
- 30:37information about that is available Bridge Valley dot edu slash Apprenticeships if you want more
- 30:41information about that. I mean again, training for the little or no cost
- 30:45fifty to fifty salary match and you got ready made employees. Man, they're
- 30:48just ready to jump right in there. Okay. They literally leave the classroom
- 30:52and put on a hard hat or a suit and tire or whatever the case
- 30:56is, and they go to work the next day. Talk about some of
- 30:57the highlights of Bridge Valley for twenty twenty three and what you're looking forward to
- 31:02in twenty twenty four. Bridge Valley's brought in over seven million dollars in federal
- 31:06grants in twenty three. We're really proud of that. Each each grant means
- 31:10that we're doing something innovative in the community so that we can help people.
- 31:14A theme that we found is that we're really focused on retention. What can
- 31:18we do to help keep the students who we have, So in many of
- 31:21these grant programs, we've developed a program that's called a SIND. And the
- 31:26point of a SIND is to make sure that all of our students have the
- 31:29resources they need to say students, So if that means a gas card or
- 31:33to help find childcare in town, or some kind of connection to the KRT
- 31:37bus pass program, we really want to make sure that that's true for students,
- 31:41so that they don't drop out for some reason. That's sort of one
- 31:44of these like you said, you know, a flat tire away, you
- 31:47know, from not being able to complete or or not having the gas money
- 31:49or whatever. There's no excuse because you gonna take care of that, right,
- 31:52It's really important to us that we keep our students. They're really smart.
- 31:56The people who want to come back to Bridge Valley have all all of
- 32:00the drive and all of the desire, and we just want to make sure
- 32:01people cross the finish line. Well, you're doing some great work out there,
- 32:06doctor Sachs, you and your entire team. But what I like about
- 32:07it is is that you are committed to West Virginia and the Kanaal Valley and
- 32:14that you're always out there. Your team's always out there doing things sometimes aren't
- 32:16even related necessarily to education. Because you're out there in the community. We
- 32:22see at all these community events and you, yourself and your wonderful staff,
- 32:24we see you out there. So that's an important part of it. Thank
- 32:29you. I mean, this is our community. We really want the whole
- 32:31valley to be successful, and twenty twenty four is going to be even more
- 32:35so. Right, Oh, absolutely, we're really looking forward to it.
- 32:37Bridge Valley turns ten in twenty twenty eighth. Okay, okay, and so
- 32:40in March we'll have a gala. Everyone's invited. We'd love for you to
- 32:44go online to the foundation and buy tickets to support the college. The money
- 32:47will end up going to our Student Opportunity Fund to the endowment so that we
- 32:51can endow the program that'll make sure that students have the resources they need to
- 32:54cross that finish line. All right, doctor Sachs, I appreciate you being
- 32:59here. All this everything we talked about is available. You folks do a
- 33:01fantastic job with your web I would hope that you did, since you're training
- 33:04all these I people. I hope that your website and your social media everything
- 33:07is good because that's a that's a big part of it as well. But
- 33:09you guys do a fantastic job with that. For you and your staff,
- 33:13you got wonderful people out there. Uh. Great talking to you as always.

- 48:00but he does have some explaining to do about the whole season and not just
- 48:07last night. Time will tell. I suppose got a text or somebody said,
- 48:15Dear Dave, did you see the latest Jim Justice endorsement? He's now
- 48:17being endorsed by Senator Blackburn the Tennessee. Yeah, I actually just looked.
- 48:25I just got a press release on that. Big headlines here in the press
- 48:29league. US Senator Marshall Blackburn endorses Governor Jim Justice for US Senate. She
- 48:34is from Tennessee and so way to go Jim Justice. An endorsement from Marshall
- 48:40Blackburn. Listen to Hoppy yesterday and the Senator Joe Manchin was on He and
- 48:47others pretty much disgusted at what's going on or not going on the southern border.
- 48:57Brad mclahenny with the story post to wv Metro News. The Senate returned
- 49:00to d C this week and they had worked through the weekend on a framework
- 49:10that includes aid to Ukraine, Israel, and some other border security measures,
- 49:19but according to Brad's story, only about half were there half the US Senators
- 49:24for the Monday evening votes, and now it looks like, stop me if
- 49:29you've heard this before, nothing's going to happen. Senator Manchion on talk line
- 49:36yesterday said he was disappointed and disgusted his words, and I think we can
- 49:43all agree something has to be done because what is happening now at the southern
- 49:46border is not sustainable and the Senator's absolutely right about that, and merely closing
- 49:51the border isn't going to cut it. It's got to go well beyond that.
- 49:54It's been a crisis for some time. It was a crisis under Trump
- 49:59because he did little to help the basic problem. So Democrats Republicans fix it
- 50:06and speaking to former President Trump. Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump is
- 50:12disqualified from holding office because his actions leading up to January sixth. Now the
- 50:16ruling bars him from being on the Colorado Republican primary ballot. Of course,
- 50:22there will be an appeal. According to Trump's campaign, that appeal will go
- 50:27to the US Supreme Court, which means that the Supreme Court and the justices
- 50:32could in effect decide the framework for the twenty twenty four presidential election. And
- 50:39of course, now because Trump's Trump, it has turned into a fundraising mechanism
- 50:45for the Trump campaign, as have all of the former president's legal issues.
- 50:51The more trouble he seemingly gets in, the more his base likes him,
- 50:57and the more money he raises. I've said it before, I am one
- 51:01Republican who does not want Trump to be the nominee. Nikki Haley, Chris
- 51:06Christy, Sanus, anybody but Ramaswami, because that's a hard note for me.
- 51:12But my wish is is that the Republican Party nationwide and here in West
- 51:16Virginia would decide that, not the courts, and it will close with us.
- 51:22Look at the at the numbers, folks. Polling has shown that it
- 51:27head to head matchup, Biden beats Trump. But if it's Nicki Haley facing
- 51:31Biden, Haley wins by seventeen points. So for those who want an end
- 51:35to the Biden presidency, talking to you Republicans, at least right now,
- 51:39it seems Nicki Haley is the way to go, not Trump. I'm not
- 51:44totally in love with Nicki Haley either, but she is an alternative to Trump,
- 51:49for sure, and I like some of the things that she said about
- 51:52Trump. Trump was the right president at the right time, but that time,
- 51:58and I agree with Nicki Haley is not now. He is a one
- 52:01man chaos machine. And if you think it was bad in respect in his
- 52:07first term, imagine what it's going to be like when he has nothing to
- 52:09lose if he wins in twenty twenty four. So something to think about.
- 52:19G says the textor Congress can't pass laws and immigration reform and they blame someone
- 52:22else. Isn't this pathetic? Says a Texture. Chuck Schumer, A lot
- 52:28of other Democrats saying very different tunes on the illegal aliens prior to twenty sixteen,
- 52:31says a Texture, very good point. All Right, we gotta go.
- 52:35Thank you so much for my guests on the show today, Millie Snyder

- 53:01We are proud to live here too. From ABC News, I'm Sherriy
- 53:09preston a record breaking week at the Southern border Customs and Border Patrol, saying
- 53:14on Tuesday there were more than twelve thousand, six hundred encounters with migrant seekers,
- 53:19the highest one day total ever. Members of the Senate still trying to
- 53:22iron out some sort of policy, but, says ABC's Maria v Real and
- 53:25Eagle Past, Texas Congress is set to leave for holiday break in just a
- 53:29few days, and they have made no compromise on funding for border security,
- 53:34leaving the agents here on the ground the city leaders to deal with this crisis.
- 53:37You know, as of right now, many of them are relied on
- 53:40nonprofit organizations to provide food, water, and basic necessities like medical treatment to
- 53:45these migrants. Frankly, it is an unacceptable situation. The ACLU suing over
- 53:52Texas Governor Greg Abbot's plan to let local police arrest those they suspect of being
- 53:54in the country illegally, the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that Donald Trump cannot be
