- 0:06Speaker 1: It becomes Wednesday, a yacht Rock Wednesday and a chance
- 0:11Speaker 1: to help you get over the home.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio Am thirteen
- 0:18Speaker 1: hundred the Zone and where you can always listen to
- 0:21Speaker 1: us absolutely free of charge on the iHeartRadio app.
- 0:26Speaker 2: My name is Craig Wya do. Thank you very much
- 0:27Speaker 2: for joining us. We're with you each and every weekday afternoon,
- 0:31Speaker 2: Monday through Friday, from two pm to five pm Central Time,
- 0:36Speaker 2: and we also invite your questions, your thoughts, your commentary
- 0:43Speaker 2: and likes. A couple of different ways to do that.
- 0:45Speaker 2: You can text the program.
- 0:47Speaker 1: You text the word Texas follow by your question or
- 0:50Speaker 1: comment to eight one five three zero. So text the
- 0:53Speaker 1: word Texas follow by your question comment to eight one
- 0:56Speaker 1: five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 1:01Speaker 1: You can also access us the talkback feature the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:07Speaker 1: That's also where we do our contesting, and we've been
- 1:10Speaker 1: doing some contesting late. We've been giving away copies of
- 1:14Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, the brand new twenty twenty
- 1:17Speaker 1: six edition, which is always in high demand. The four
- 1:20Speaker 1: hundred pages of football Goodness. Out of that previews college
- 1:25Speaker 1: football in the lone Star State at all Levelsion one,
- 1:29Speaker 1: FBS Power for Conferences regular, the G six, Division one,
- 1:35Speaker 1: FBS Schools, FCS, Division two, Division three, NAI Junior College.
- 1:41Speaker 1: All of the college football for every collegiate program in
- 1:44Speaker 1: the state of Texas is previewed in this magazine. Also
- 1:47Speaker 1: more than fifteen hundred high school previews as well. So
- 1:53Speaker 1: we give away a copy of this we've been doing
- 1:55Speaker 1: it now we hit the halfway point today. We've been
- 1:59Speaker 1: giving way one copy of the magazine per hour, three
- 2:03Speaker 1: per show for three weeks last week, this week, and
- 2:06Speaker 1: next week, and so we're at the midway mark and
- 2:08Speaker 1: we've done it two different ways to give the maximum
- 2:12Speaker 1: amount of opportunities for folks to win a copy.
- 2:15Speaker 2: We do the.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Standard lottery if you will, and what that means is
- 2:24Speaker 1: you contact us. And the other way we do it
- 2:27Speaker 1: is through trivia as well. Some folks feel better, they
- 2:30Speaker 1: feel like they have a better fighting chance if there's
- 2:32Speaker 1: a trivia question that they can get in an answer.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Others who are not into the trivia thing prefer just hey,
- 2:38Speaker 2: can I be the lucky number six person in the queue?
- 2:41Speaker 2: So that's why we try to balance it and give
- 2:43Speaker 2: you equal opportunities. Today there will be two of the
- 2:48Speaker 2: lottery chances and one trivia.
- 2:50Speaker 1: We did it the other way yesterday, so we balance
- 2:52Speaker 1: that out every day. But in order to have a
- 2:55Speaker 1: shot to win, no matter how it favors you, you
- 2:58Speaker 1: need to access us via the talkback feature on the
- 3:02Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app.
- 3:03Speaker 2: And the way you do that is, if you haven't.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Already, you download the iHeartRadio app on your smartphone, whether
- 3:10Speaker 1: it's an iPhone or an Android. Very easy to do,
- 3:12Speaker 1: very simple, very easy to do, and it's free. You
- 3:15Speaker 1: just go to your app store whatever and you see
- 3:16Speaker 1: iHeart Radio, click download whatever, you double click to install
- 3:20Speaker 1: whatever you gotta do, and then you just download the app.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So then once the app is installed, then what you
- 3:27Speaker 1: do is you do a search for AM thirteen hundred zone.
- 3:31Speaker 1: This here radio station AM thirteen hundred zone pop straight up,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and when it does, you'll see a couple of buns,
- 3:36Speaker 1: a little white button that's an arrowhead shaped triangle shape.
- 3:39Speaker 1: That's to listen to what's going on the air at
- 3:41Speaker 1: the time. It's the other button is for the contesting.
- 3:45Speaker 1: It's a little red button with a light microphone, and
- 3:47Speaker 1: that's the key because that's our talkback microphone. You tap
- 3:50Speaker 1: that button and you can leave us a message up
- 3:52Speaker 1: to thirty seconds.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Don't go beyond thirty it'll cut you off.
- 3:55Speaker 1: But really and truly, if you're just you know, wanting
- 3:58Speaker 1: to be in the contesting, you don't even need the
- 4:02Speaker 1: thirty seconds.
- 4:03Speaker 2: When we do. Let's say, for example, I.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Say we will go to the eighth person and reach
- 4:08Speaker 1: us on the back microphone on the iHeartRadio app, all
- 4:12Speaker 1: you have to do when you click in is to
- 4:14Speaker 1: say I want the magazine and give us your name
- 4:17Speaker 1: and phone number.
- 4:17Speaker 2: That's all you have to do on that.
- 4:19Speaker 1: So we'll give away a copy in that fashion lottery
- 4:23Speaker 1: style if you will both this hour and the four
- 4:25Speaker 1: o'clock hour, and then we'll have a trivia question in
- 4:28Speaker 1: the three o'clock hour, and that's how you access us.
- 4:32Speaker 1: You can also if you just want to leave a
- 4:33Speaker 1: commentary for the program or a question, you can do
- 4:36Speaker 1: that on the talkback microphone as well. Actually have your
- 4:40Speaker 1: voice heard on the air. Just keep it clean, keep
- 4:43Speaker 1: it family oriented as well. Our family includes the producer.
- 4:46Speaker 1: You see him there for those of you watching on
- 4:48Speaker 1: the YouTube, That is Jay Carmon. What was they finally
- 4:52Speaker 1: got the ac fixed in your apartment.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 4:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a long time coming, Craig.
- 4:56Speaker 4: And it's much more comfortable up there now, I can
- 4:58Speaker 4: assure you of that.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Now.
- 5:00Speaker 4: The dry wall that was taken out underneath it, that's
- 5:02Speaker 4: another story. It's like pulling teeth to pin these people
- 5:05Speaker 4: down for a time. But I got nothing left to
- 5:08Speaker 4: complain about, which it Well, that's a first you'll hear
- 5:10Speaker 4: from me. But it's been much more comfortable, and it
- 5:12Speaker 4: just turns out that old system had it had to
- 5:15Speaker 4: completely go. Okay, So it's all it's all shiny and
- 5:19Speaker 4: new now okay, and you have a nice, cool apartment,
- 5:22Speaker 4: then it is.
- 5:23Speaker 2: At least temperature wise. I haven't been here here part,
- 5:26Speaker 2: so I don't know how cool it is. You know,
- 5:28Speaker 2: if you're going there and just look around, say this
- 5:30Speaker 2: is a pretty cool place to live. Not preferring that,
- 5:32Speaker 2: I'm just saying temperature wise.
- 5:33Speaker 4: You know, it's cool if you like sports memorabilia. I've
- 5:37Speaker 4: got a Bijon Robinson jersey framed and signed an amazing
- 5:40Speaker 4: gift for really an amazing gift from my girlfriend's family
- 5:43Speaker 4: right above the couch, and a couple of other got
- 5:48Speaker 4: a signed Alex Ovechkin plaque that I've had since my childhood.
- 5:53Speaker 4: And then a famous print of a Daniel Moore painting.
- 5:57Speaker 4: He does all the Alabama famous moments throughout their history.
- 6:01Speaker 3: That was a gift from my grandparents.
- 6:03Speaker 4: It's got the Rocky block with Terrence Cody's block against Tennessee,
- 6:07Speaker 4: the first college football game I remember attending.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Nice.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So here's what we have coming up
- 6:14Speaker 1: on the program. The other thing that we have been
- 6:17Speaker 1: doing last week and this week and next week, in
- 6:20Speaker 1: addition to giving away those copies of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 6:22Speaker 1: Football magazine, is that we are previewing all fifteen other
- 6:29Speaker 1: schools in the Southeastern Conference for the coming football season.
- 6:32Speaker 1: They're sixteen, obviously including Texas, but the other fifteen schools,
- 6:36Speaker 1: you know, one per day, five per week for three weeks,
- 6:40Speaker 1: same simple math like we're doing for the magazine giveaway.
- 6:43Speaker 1: So last week we started off with the defending conference champions,
- 6:48Speaker 1: Georgia on Monday. And the other thing is we're visiting
- 6:52Speaker 1: with all the play by play voices of the Southeastern Conference.
- 6:55Speaker 1: So Monday we visit with Jeff Dantler, who's taking over
- 6:58Speaker 1: the football play by play these for Georgia this fall. Tuesday,
- 7:03Speaker 1: we looked at Arkansas and we visited with Chuck Barrett,
- 7:06Speaker 1: their play by play voice. Sean Kelly, the voice of
- 7:08Speaker 1: the Florida Gators, joined us on Wednesday to preview Florida.
- 7:11Speaker 1: On Thursday of last week, it was Kentucky and Tom
- 7:15Speaker 1: Leach their play by play voice, and last Friday, Neil Price,
- 7:19Speaker 1: the voice of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, joined us. This week,
- 7:22Speaker 1: we started off South Carolina. Todd Ellis, their play by
- 7:25Speaker 1: play voice, was on with us on Monday. Yesterday it
- 7:29Speaker 1: was the Missouri Tigers and we visited with Mike Kelly,
- 7:31Speaker 1: their radio play by play voice, and we keep it
- 7:34Speaker 1: on the Tiger motif.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Today we'll preview LSU.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And we'll visit with Chris Blair coming up here in
- 7:40Speaker 1: just a few minutes to play by play voice of
- 7:43Speaker 1: the LSU Tigers. So we're doing that throughout the course
- 7:46Speaker 1: of last week, this week, and next week. Give me
- 7:49Speaker 1: a preview of what to expect from each of these
- 7:52Speaker 1: schools around the SEC, So we'll do that coming up.
- 7:56Speaker 1: We do have Inconceivable this hour. We got a bizarre
- 8:00Speaker 1: inconceivable story and it has to do with high school football.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Actually really yep, hopefully I don't get as fired up
- 8:07Speaker 4: as yesterday.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you were a little worked up about that about
- 8:11Speaker 1: the Little League thing with Bernie and the Tulsa national
- 8:15Speaker 1: team which ended up getting tossed out. So Bernie's headed
- 8:18Speaker 1: to Williamsport and the Little League World Series. So we
- 8:21Speaker 1: have inconceivable And then we have a sound from both
- 8:25Speaker 1: what Dak Prescott and Brian Schotenheimer. Yep, after yesterday's joint
- 8:29Speaker 1: practice with the Rams, so we'll hear from them as well.
- 8:34Speaker 1: All right, Coming up next, we'll talk LSU football with
- 8:38Speaker 1: a play by play voice of the LSU Tigers, Chris Blair.
- 8:41Speaker 1: We continue right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 8:43Speaker 1: the Zone and where you always listen us for free
- 8:46Speaker 1: on the iHeartRadio app. I Got Rock Wednesday here on
- 8:53Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. Doobie Brothers past
- 8:58Speaker 1: and present have some that fall into the category, and
- 9:02Speaker 1: that includes listen to music. The Doobies will be here
- 9:05Speaker 1: next week without Michael McDonald, so I imagine this will.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Be on the playlist for them when they do that.
- 9:10Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 9:11Speaker 1: It's time for us to continue our SEC football previews.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And whenever we have a guest, not necessarily just one
- 9:19Speaker 1: of the play by play voices of the Southeastern Conference
- 9:22Speaker 1: with us, as we're about to have, but whenever we
- 9:24Speaker 1: have a guest and it's on a yacht rock Wednesday,
- 9:26Speaker 1: feel compelled to ask the guest if they have any
- 9:30Speaker 1: interest or fandom whatsoever in yacht rock. Now, our guest
- 9:34Speaker 1: is considerably younger than me. Chris Blair is the play
- 9:36Speaker 1: by play voice of the LSU Tigers, So I don't
- 9:38Speaker 1: even know does yacht rock even have any appeal for
- 9:42Speaker 1: you whatsoever? And by the way, thanks for taking the
- 9:45Speaker 1: time to join us today.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 9:47Speaker 5: No problem, Greig, thanks for having me, and you're being
- 9:50Speaker 5: awfully kinda not a lot younger than you more. But
- 9:54Speaker 5: in fact, yes, you will find actually two versions, yacht
- 9:57Speaker 5: rock and yacht Country. Oh yes, new format, so you'll
- 10:01Speaker 5: find that. In fact, I think if you turn my
- 10:03Speaker 5: vehicle on right now, it's probably on yacht Country.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So between them both, yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Might be spinning through some islands in the sea or
- 10:10Speaker 1: something in the stream. Excuse me, you know Little Dolly
- 10:13Speaker 1: part and Kenny Rodgers that sort of thing.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Absolutely, I went on a heater last night, we had
- 10:18Speaker 5: Charlie Rich followed by Conway Twitty followed my uh pure
- 10:23Speaker 5: Prairie League, and then I think the original.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Rhythm with that.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I absolutely love that. That's great stuff. Okay, let let
- 10:37Speaker 1: me jump from one sort of entertainment to the other.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Because somebody asked me when I was at SEC media
- 10:43Speaker 1: days a couple of weeks ago about what what I
- 10:46Speaker 1: thought was the biggest or most what was going to
- 10:51Speaker 1: be the most talked about theme in the Southeastern Conference
- 10:55Speaker 1: this season?
- 10:56Speaker 2: I said, not only in the SEC, but it's.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Going to be, if not the most, it's gonna be
- 10:59Speaker 1: one of the most talk about things in all of
- 11:01Speaker 1: college football. Is the arrival of your new head coach,
- 11:04Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin taking taking the reins of the program a
- 11:08Speaker 1: because of the drama that surrounded the departure from moments
- 11:11Speaker 1: to begin with, but just going into a program that
- 11:14Speaker 1: has those galactic expectations like LSU does, just like Texas does,
- 11:19Speaker 1: and several other programs as well. So I guess the
- 11:22Speaker 1: first thing I wanted to ask is how's it been
- 11:24Speaker 1: so far and what's what's been your impressions? Even as
- 11:27Speaker 1: practice is just in its very early days, if you've
- 11:31Speaker 1: noticed difference has marked differences in how coach Kiffin and
- 11:35Speaker 1: his staff or attacking their new responsibilities.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Yeah, Greg, I think you're one right, and it's a
- 11:43Speaker 5: little uncomfortable for me to agree with you because it
- 11:46Speaker 5: seems like, Okay, everything is centric to LSU. But and again,
- 11:51Speaker 5: obviously I'm I'm jaded when it comes to that. I
- 11:54Speaker 5: look through everything to purple and gold lenses. However, my
- 11:57Speaker 5: argument has been since then AU and the run up
- 12:01Speaker 5: through the college football playoffs, the Indiana becoming the national champion,
- 12:05Speaker 5: and I would argue on a national level, while all
- 12:09Speaker 5: of that is going on, if not the number one
- 12:11Speaker 5: story one A was Lane Kiffin an LSU and the
- 12:15Speaker 5: drama that you just described. So that's not just a
- 12:17Speaker 5: biased opinion. I think that was top of mind for everybody.
- 12:22Speaker 5: And I think the market difference that I have seen
- 12:25Speaker 5: is there was a lot of that. You know, you
- 12:27Speaker 5: could talk to coach Kiffin, you could talk to some
- 12:29Speaker 5: of the returning Tigers who have decided to stay here
- 12:32Speaker 5: and be part of this team. You can talk to
- 12:34Speaker 5: the administration and they're not backing away from it. They
- 12:37Speaker 5: had a plan, they went and enacted that plan, and
- 12:40Speaker 5: they got the guy they wanted. Is everybody happy about it?
- 12:44Speaker 5: Obviously not everybody, but here at LSU they are. And
- 12:49Speaker 5: I think the market difference that you refer to is
- 12:51Speaker 5: that from about December through January February maybe to the
- 12:55Speaker 5: start and run up of spring football, it was, you know,
- 12:58Speaker 5: LSU didn't back away from it is what it is.
- 13:01Speaker 5: When somebody asks somebody a question, here's what our answer is.
- 13:04Speaker 5: Once spring football started, it almost looked like the football
- 13:08Speaker 5: program and again taking the lead from the head coach,
- 13:11Speaker 5: went from an extroverted program to a little more introverted.
- 13:15Speaker 2: And I think that was by design.
- 13:17Speaker 5: It was like, Okay, we had our fun and games,
- 13:20Speaker 5: we got all the attention we possibly could couldn't even
- 13:23Speaker 5: pay for. Now we got to go do the job.
- 13:26Speaker 5: And I think that was kind of the the example
- 13:29Speaker 5: that Coach Kiffin said. And it's been fairly quiet, and
- 13:33Speaker 5: that's believe me, being here on campus, being around the
- 13:36Speaker 5: football operations building. That's not easy to do. But I
- 13:39Speaker 5: think they've done a concerted effort to do that because now,
- 13:43Speaker 5: whether they have a great season in twenty twenty six
- 13:46Speaker 5: or you know, everybody gets to sit back and you know,
- 13:48Speaker 5: poke fun at LSU there's no way they can do
- 13:51Speaker 5: this season in any subtle form or fashion.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's definitely going to be in the limelight,
- 13:56Speaker 1: no doubt about it. Chris, what would you say was
- 14:03Speaker 1: coach Kiffin's number one?
- 14:04Speaker 2: Roll up the sleeves? This is what we have to
- 14:06Speaker 2: address now. Obviously we've seen Sam Levitt come in as
- 14:09Speaker 2: his quarterback, and we'll talk about him in a moment,
- 14:12Speaker 2: but what really struck you about what he wanted to
- 14:15Speaker 2: do to get this program from being seven and six
- 14:19Speaker 2: a year ago to being at we're near the top
- 14:21Speaker 2: of the SEC, where they have quite often been down
- 14:24Speaker 2: through the years. I think it starts upfront.
- 14:27Speaker 5: And you know again, I think you could ask any
- 14:29Speaker 5: coach in the SEC this year, last year, five years ago,
- 14:32Speaker 5: eight years ago, they're going to say that's where the
- 14:34Speaker 5: battles are won and lost. But for LSU specifically, it
- 14:39Speaker 5: was a big, glaring need and of course coach Kiffin
- 14:42Speaker 5: is certainly intimately involved in the offense. Blake Baker remains
- 14:47Speaker 5: as the defensive coordinator, and I think he was that
- 14:49Speaker 5: was an excellent decision. I have a lot of faith
- 14:51Speaker 5: in coach Baker. I like the way he coaches. I
- 14:53Speaker 5: like his style, which is in a college football world
- 14:57Speaker 5: of dynamic and high flying offenses, you can't be reactive defensively.
- 15:03Speaker 5: You've got to be proactive. You've got to disrupt it.
- 15:05Speaker 5: You've got to throw a wrench in the gears. Do
- 15:07Speaker 5: they have the horses to be able to do that
- 15:09Speaker 5: week in and week out with the schedule they have.
- 15:11Speaker 2: We'll have to wait and see.
- 15:12Speaker 5: But I think coach Kiffin said, we've got to be bigger,
- 15:16Speaker 5: we've got to be stronger, we've got to be faster,
- 15:18Speaker 5: and we've got to be smarter up front on both
- 15:20Speaker 5: sides of the football. Because again we all remember, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 5: over the years, both at Alabama and then as a
- 15:26Speaker 5: head coach at Ole Miss, the plays that get all
- 15:28Speaker 5: the clicks are the ones where the snap is made,
- 15:31Speaker 5: you see the play start to roll and then inevitably
- 15:34Speaker 5: you see lane flip the clipboard up and you know
- 15:37Speaker 5: there's a touchdown. But it's really an offense that wants
- 15:40Speaker 5: to run the football so that they can get that
- 15:42Speaker 5: clipboard play. And that's something that LSU really has not
- 15:45Speaker 5: been able to do consistently to the standard that they
- 15:49Speaker 5: need to in this league since really guys the twenty
- 15:52Speaker 5: nineteen season, and that's you know, again, that was a
- 15:55Speaker 5: magical year and everybody loves it. But that's a long
- 15:57Speaker 5: time ago, no doubt. So I think that was the
- 15:59Speaker 5: first need that he said we gotta address because we're
- 16:02Speaker 5: not going to have those big, exciting plays if we
- 16:04Speaker 5: can't run the football consistently.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Well, since we're on that subject of running the football,
- 16:09Speaker 1: take us through a little bit what you've seen so
- 16:10Speaker 1: far with regards to the running back.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Harlan Berry, the sophomore.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Obviously, Katon Durham is a guy it's called a couple
- 16:17Speaker 1: of state championship games he played with for television when
- 16:20Speaker 1: he was at Duncanville there in the Dallas Fort Worth area.
- 16:23Speaker 1: How about your thoughts on what you've seen from the
- 16:25Speaker 1: running back spot.
- 16:26Speaker 5: You know, it's interesting because when you look at the
- 16:29Speaker 5: run game again on papers we get in deeper into
- 16:31Speaker 5: fall camp, you realize that of the twenty two what
- 16:35Speaker 5: I will say at this moment, are the starters or
- 16:38Speaker 5: the depth chart number one on the depth chart, you know,
- 16:40Speaker 5: eleven of those guys are new and the majority of
- 16:43Speaker 5: them are are the skill positions offensively. In fact, when
- 16:47Speaker 5: you look at the returning position groups. Maybe there's more
- 16:50Speaker 5: returning on the offensive line, but specifically to the running backs.
- 16:54Speaker 2: We have seen.
- 16:55Speaker 5: Flashes from both Harlan Berry and Kate Durham. I mean
- 16:59Speaker 5: CAD's freshman year. We really thought this might be the
- 17:02Speaker 5: next Clyde Edwards. He layer because of his skill set.
- 17:05Speaker 5: You know, he was going to be used more as
- 17:06Speaker 5: a scat back than just to line up Leonard and
- 17:09Speaker 5: Fournette style run you over, and he's done both again.
- 17:14Speaker 5: You know, the inability to run the football was not
- 17:17Speaker 5: necessarily always on the running backs. And I heard, you know,
- 17:20Speaker 5: a previous offensive coordinator. I heard our previous head coach
- 17:23Speaker 5: say there are times where it is on the running back.
- 17:26Speaker 5: They're only going to have a small sliver to get through,
- 17:29Speaker 5: and they got to get through it. And once they
- 17:31Speaker 5: get through it, then they can get up to speed,
- 17:32Speaker 5: they can make a cut, and then big plays happened,
- 17:35Speaker 5: Those chunk plays happened. So it was kind of both.
- 17:38Speaker 5: The offensive line wasn't giving them much of a sliver,
- 17:40Speaker 5: but yet the running backs weren't able to power through.
- 17:43Speaker 5: That's going to have to change this year. And again,
- 17:46Speaker 5: the young players that are going to be on that
- 17:48Speaker 5: offensive line, I think two returners that I would expect
- 17:51Speaker 5: to be starting on September fifth against Clemson are going
- 17:55Speaker 5: to be asked to do their job much better than
- 17:57Speaker 5: they have done over the last five six seasons. But
- 18:00Speaker 5: I think we've seen enough from Harlan Berry from Cayden
- 18:04Speaker 5: Durham and frankly the transferred Dylon Jones who's coming in
- 18:07Speaker 5: from Wisconsin, who was banged up last year I think
- 18:10Speaker 5: played maybe seven games. I think those guys have the
- 18:13Speaker 5: ability to be outstanding running backs in the SEC. But again,
- 18:17Speaker 5: it would be unfair to say, Okay, it's all on
- 18:19Speaker 5: them if they can't eclipse one hundred yards per game,
- 18:22Speaker 5: it's all in the running backs. Most fans here at
- 18:24Speaker 5: LSU they've seen enough of it to know that there's
- 18:28Speaker 5: more involved than just those players individually.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Chris players to play by Playboy. So the LSU Tigers
- 18:34Speaker 2: joining us here for a few more minutes here on
- 18:35Speaker 2: AM thirteen hundred the Zone. Okay, wal Morn fans got
- 18:39Speaker 2: to see Sam Levin up close and personal two years
- 18:41Speaker 2: ago in that landmark effort he gave Arizona State and
- 18:44Speaker 2: that peach Bull that went double overtime, and of course
- 18:47Speaker 2: he built on that last year with the Sun Devils.
- 18:50Speaker 1: How about your impressions of him? What could be expected
- 18:56Speaker 1: of him taking the reins at quarterback for LSU.
- 18:59Speaker 5: I think anybody again that has followed his career at
- 19:02Speaker 5: the collegiate level is going to really circle that twenty
- 19:04Speaker 5: twenty four season where you know, I think he was
- 19:06Speaker 5: closing in on three thousand passing yards, had twenty nine touchdowns,
- 19:10Speaker 5: and I think twenty four of those who are through
- 19:12Speaker 5: the air close to about five hundred yards on the
- 19:16Speaker 5: season rushing. But I mean he was a guy that,
- 19:18Speaker 5: again going back to Lane Kiffen, wanting to be able
- 19:21Speaker 5: to run the football. You know, if your quarterback is
- 19:24Speaker 5: a part of that, which LSU the last two seasons,
- 19:26Speaker 5: as we know, really did not have that mobile quarterback
- 19:29Speaker 5: since Jaydon Daniels won the Heisman Trophy and went on
- 19:32Speaker 5: to the NFL with Sam Levitt. If he's a one
- 19:35Speaker 5: hundred percent healthy and he's the Sam Levitt we saw
- 19:37Speaker 5: in twenty twenty four, then I think he's going to
- 19:40Speaker 5: fit well into this offense, not only from a running standpoint,
- 19:43Speaker 5: but the threat, the constant threat of his ability to
- 19:47Speaker 5: tuck it down and run is going to be in
- 19:49Speaker 5: the minds of defensive coordinators, which really the last two
- 19:52Speaker 5: to three seasons, that just hasn't been the case, certainly
- 19:55Speaker 5: the last two seasons. And I think more importantly his
- 19:59Speaker 5: ability to stretch plays in the passing game, just his
- 20:03Speaker 5: fact that the ability to improvise, you know, move the pocket,
- 20:08Speaker 5: extend the play sideline to sideline and then be at
- 20:11Speaker 5: the mercy of somebody being overly aggressive and then he
- 20:14Speaker 5: can run and beat you or just wait for a
- 20:16Speaker 5: guy to get open. As you know in this league,
- 20:18Speaker 5: at this level, you know, five to six, seven, eight
- 20:21Speaker 5: seconds of trying to go one on one with any
- 20:23Speaker 5: of the receivers you face is a tall task. I
- 20:26Speaker 5: think Levitt gives you the ability again, if healthy, and
- 20:28Speaker 5: we have all indications that he is, that he's going
- 20:31Speaker 5: to be able to give you that piece of weaponry
- 20:33Speaker 5: that LSU has been without for the last two years.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Well, you mentioned my receivers getting open, and here's another
- 20:38Speaker 1: guy long worn fans became in their eyes unfortunately acquainted
- 20:42Speaker 1: with last year, Eugene Wilson with the ballgame he had
- 20:45Speaker 1: against Texas in the game in Gainesville for Florida as well.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Is he, along with Jackson Harris, the two guys that
- 20:52Speaker 1: you expect to be the clean, the lead guys in
- 20:57Speaker 1: the pass catching department for the Tigers.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah, think so.
- 21:00Speaker 5: I think those are probably the first two on paper
- 21:02Speaker 5: that everybody is excited about. I mean, this is the
- 21:04Speaker 5: first time in a number of years, Craig, that you know,
- 21:07Speaker 5: wide receivers have had a pretty good success here at
- 21:10Speaker 5: LSU for a long time and then gone to to
- 21:13Speaker 5: have great careers and make a lot of money. This
- 21:16Speaker 5: is really the first year that we're coming in where
- 21:17Speaker 5: it's all new guys, at least in in what we
- 21:20Speaker 5: expect to be the first, you know, first string on
- 21:23Speaker 5: the depth chart. And I think those two lead it
- 21:25Speaker 5: with what they did at Florida where you know, as
- 21:28Speaker 5: a quarterback, DJ Lagway had his great moments and then
- 21:31Speaker 5: when he came to baton Rouge last year was a
- 21:32Speaker 5: complete disaster, but you could easily tell where Wilson was
- 21:36Speaker 5: the guy they wanted to go to, put it that way,
- 21:40Speaker 5: and I think Harris will do the same thing with
- 21:42Speaker 5: what he's done. I think the big part in the
- 21:44Speaker 5: passing game that I'm most excited to see, and I
- 21:47Speaker 5: would imagine Tiger fans are in general, is how does
- 21:51Speaker 5: coach Kiffen and coach Weiss utilize trade as Green who
- 21:55Speaker 5: is listed as a tight end, but he was a
- 21:57Speaker 5: wide receiver nearby at the high schooll hear nearby and
- 22:00Speaker 5: baton Rouge, and he's just kind of a hybrid tight
- 22:03Speaker 5: end if you will. He's improved his tight end skills
- 22:06Speaker 5: over the last two seasons. But make no mistake, we
- 22:10Speaker 5: joke all the time that you get inside the ten
- 22:11Speaker 5: yard line, it's gonna be a goal line fade.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I know it.
- 22:15Speaker 5: The opponent knows that, everybody in the stands knows it.
- 22:18Speaker 5: The question is do you have somebody who can match
- 22:20Speaker 5: up with a trade as Green? With his size is
- 22:22Speaker 5: a leaping ability and his good hands. Can you stop it?
- 22:25Speaker 5: You know it's coming, but can you stop it? So
- 22:28Speaker 5: when you mentioned those three guys, those two guys, especially
- 22:31Speaker 5: that transfer in with the returning trade as Green, suddenly
- 22:35Speaker 5: you hope if you're LSU that you're gonna have to
- 22:38Speaker 5: pick your poison. Are you gonna bracket coverage one of
- 22:40Speaker 5: these guys that you don't want getting loose over the top.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Are you gonna be able to account for a trade
- 22:45Speaker 5: as Green, who more times than not is going to
- 22:48Speaker 5: be outside is going to outsize whoever you put on him,
- 22:52Speaker 5: whether it's a big time corner, whether it's one of
- 22:54Speaker 5: your linebackers. That to me is where the passing game
- 22:57Speaker 5: will have its strength, even though we don't don't have
- 23:00Speaker 5: the quote unquote big name returning that we've had since
- 23:04Speaker 5: really twenty sixteen.
- 23:06Speaker 1: You mentioned Blake Baker. I wanted to get your thoughts
- 23:09Speaker 1: on the defense, the things that strike you and if
- 23:12Speaker 1: there is a question mark that if this pans out
- 23:16Speaker 1: the way it has hoped and perhaps planned for, then
- 23:20Speaker 1: the defense has a big season. What really strikes you
- 23:24Speaker 1: about this defense of coach Bakers?
- 23:27Speaker 5: Well, I mentioned the fact that there is eleven of
- 23:29Speaker 5: twenty two of what I consider the first string as
- 23:32Speaker 5: we sit here today are transfers.
- 23:34Speaker 2: The majority of the returners who.
- 23:36Speaker 5: Have skins on the wall, big moments, certainly experience in
- 23:39Speaker 5: hostile environments and big time games are on the back
- 23:42Speaker 5: end of this defense. And if you look at really
- 23:45Speaker 5: the last three seasons, the defense has been much maligned
- 23:49Speaker 5: on teams just being able to gash them. Now they
- 23:51Speaker 5: haven't been great against the run either, but big plays
- 23:54Speaker 5: have just killed LSU on the back end, which is
- 23:56Speaker 5: certainly not what is expected here.
- 23:59Speaker 2: That's not the expectation. They call it DBU for a reason.
- 24:02Speaker 5: They brought back Corey Raymond, who was kind of the
- 24:04Speaker 5: architect of that went away for a couple of seasons
- 24:07Speaker 5: at Florida.
- 24:07Speaker 2: He's now returned.
- 24:08Speaker 5: And the guys who are returning on the back end
- 24:10Speaker 5: of this defense, really from linebacker on back, are the
- 24:14Speaker 5: guys who have the most experienced and some of these,
- 24:16Speaker 5: like DJ Pickett, who was a true freshman they threw
- 24:19Speaker 5: him into the deep end early last year, had really
- 24:22Speaker 5: some great moments. So we're all expecting to see a
- 24:25Speaker 5: great improvement in the offseason under coach Raymonds tutelage. And
- 24:29Speaker 5: then you bring in a guy like Ty Bennifield, who
- 24:32Speaker 5: was an absolute monster at the back end of the
- 24:34Speaker 5: defense at Boise State for a number of years, who
- 24:37Speaker 5: has experience. Again, you've been able to your best returning
- 24:42Speaker 5: players on the back end of your defense and the
- 24:45Speaker 5: some of the key transfers that you've added.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Even up front.
- 24:49Speaker 5: And so the problem I think when you look at
- 24:51Speaker 5: LSU's defense over the last two seasons was not necessarily boy,
- 24:55Speaker 5: our back end was awful, really wasn't a whole lot
- 24:58Speaker 5: of pressure coming on quarterbacks. They had all day to
- 25:01Speaker 5: pick and choose where they would go with the football.
- 25:03Speaker 5: I think some of the transfers that they've been able
- 25:05Speaker 5: to bring in, a couple of them coming in DJ
- 25:07Speaker 5: Dottary at linebacker to pair with Weeks, I think is
- 25:10Speaker 5: a good tandem with lots of sec big game experience.
- 25:14Speaker 2: And then I mentioned TJ. Pickett.
- 25:17Speaker 5: You know, Spears had a great season last year at safety.
- 25:20Speaker 5: These guys are coming back, and as I mentioned earlier,
- 25:23Speaker 5: Blake Baker is a guy that feels like you have
- 25:25Speaker 5: to disrupt these high powered offenses. I think he's got
- 25:28Speaker 5: the pieces, and I think there's a big chance that
- 25:31Speaker 5: LSU's defense. You know, there's a long way to go
- 25:35Speaker 5: because the standard had dropped so low, but I think
- 25:38Speaker 5: there's going to be major steps forward with this year's defense,
- 25:41Speaker 5: and I think it's going to be ball hawking.
- 25:43Speaker 2: I think it's going to be aggressive.
- 25:45Speaker 5: I think they're confident for the first time in several
- 25:47Speaker 5: years to leave guys on an island, one on one
- 25:50Speaker 5: man demand and to be able to go for the
- 25:53Speaker 5: football and not get beat as bad as they have
- 25:56Speaker 5: seen over the last three years.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Chris I got to ask you before I let you go.
- 25:59Speaker 1: You know this will be the first time the Longhorns
- 26:01Speaker 1: had played in Baton Rouge since nineteen fifty three. There
- 26:05Speaker 1: was that incredible game in Austin that you brought up
- 26:08Speaker 1: in twenty nineteen that didn't get to go have the
- 26:10Speaker 1: return game in Baton Rouge due to the pandemic in
- 26:13Speaker 1: twenty twenty, So I know there's I was just talking
- 26:15Speaker 1: with somebody today about the price of tickets. It's lining
- 26:20Speaker 1: up there, kind of like the Texas Ohio State game
- 26:22Speaker 1: will be here in Austin.
- 26:25Speaker 2: What should Longhorn fans expect? And before you answer the question,
- 26:28Speaker 2: I will tell you.
- 26:28Speaker 1: This every time, and you know this having been to
- 26:31Speaker 1: Omaha as much as you've been with Tiger Baseball, that
- 26:35Speaker 1: LSU fans are incredibly hospitable. I remember in Omaha being
- 26:40Speaker 1: invited by people who were tailgating the parking lot telling
- 26:42Speaker 1: us to come down and have some gumbo and crawfish.
- 26:46Speaker 1: And that was at nine thirty in the morning. So
- 26:49Speaker 1: I can only imagine what it'll be like when they
- 26:52Speaker 1: go down to Death Valley for that Saturday night game
- 26:55Speaker 1: on November fourteenth.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Real quickly when that series was announced, years go, the
- 27:00Speaker 5: home and home nineteen and twenty. I mean that that
- 27:03Speaker 5: was an exciting That was what LSU fans and I
- 27:05Speaker 5: think college football fans in general wanted.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Let's play these type of games.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Now you move the fact that Texas is in the SEC,
- 27:11Speaker 5: I think it's a potential first of all, to get
- 27:14Speaker 5: that game back and have it here at LSU.
- 27:16Speaker 2: It's going to be a madhouse, there's no question about it.
- 27:18Speaker 5: Where it falls in the schedule, to me, makes it
- 27:22Speaker 5: the potential to be just a huge monumental matchup depending
- 27:25Speaker 5: on where the Longhorns are, depending on where LSU is
- 27:28Speaker 5: at that point of the year. So the excitement level
- 27:31Speaker 5: of that game, I don't even know how to explain that.
- 27:35Speaker 5: I think it even supersedes some of the long term
- 27:38Speaker 5: rivalries that LSU has had. Obviously, there's going to be
- 27:41Speaker 5: a big crowd for the Alabama game here at Tiger Stadium.
- 27:45Speaker 2: It always is.
- 27:46Speaker 5: But outside of that and the opener against Clemson, to me,
- 27:50Speaker 5: that's the game where you know, they told us to
- 27:52Speaker 5: prepare for maybe two hundred and two hundred and fifty
- 27:54Speaker 5: thousand people in and around Tiger Stadium on September fifth,
- 27:57Speaker 5: with one hundred and two plus jammed into the stadium.
- 28:01Speaker 5: I think there's a potential for it to be that
- 28:03Speaker 5: or even bigger by the time we get around to
- 28:06Speaker 5: Texas and LSU. And that's how that's how big that
- 28:10Speaker 5: game is. But it's going to be great to be here,
- 28:12Speaker 5: and I think all fans, you know, when you look
- 28:14Speaker 5: at the matchup Lane Kiffin against Texas defense and arch
- 28:17Speaker 5: Manning against Blake Baker's D I mean to me, the
- 28:20Speaker 5: storylines will be there. And the fact that you know,
- 28:23Speaker 5: I don't know how often we'll play this as we
- 28:25Speaker 5: shift these schedules around every year was you know, the
- 28:28Speaker 5: new members, but the fact that at least every once
- 28:31Speaker 5: in a while this this matchup will come around, either
- 28:33Speaker 5: in Austin or Baton Rouge. It's great for both schools,
- 28:36Speaker 5: great for both fan bases, and frankly, in this day
- 28:38Speaker 5: and age.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Great for college football. Think about this, Chris.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Under their formula, the SEC has said that every team
- 28:44Speaker 1: will play every team at least once every couple of years,
- 28:48Speaker 1: and that you would get to host a team once
- 28:50Speaker 1: every four years. So if it's once every four years,
- 28:53Speaker 1: it's like the Olympics. It's on that level, right, Yes,
- 28:56Speaker 1: it is, and I think that's the type.
- 28:57Speaker 5: Of atmosphere it will bring. And you know, it's funny
- 29:01Speaker 5: because you mentioned the Omah story. I'm sure at nine
- 29:03Speaker 5: am you were dressed, had to tow and burn orange,
- 29:05Speaker 5: and you still were invited, probably to sumbo and probably
- 29:09Speaker 5: a beverage, and you probably said, hey, it's nine in
- 29:11Speaker 5: the morning. But I've always told people, having been here
- 29:14Speaker 5: eleven seasons, that yes, there is a lot of uh oh,
- 29:18Speaker 5: I don't know if I want to go to Tiger
- 29:19Speaker 5: Stadium as a visiting fan. You know this, that and
- 29:21Speaker 5: the other, and literally I had to learn it when
- 29:24Speaker 5: I got here. You won't fight, you won't go hungry,
- 29:27Speaker 5: you won't go thirsty, you will not die of thirst.
- 29:29Speaker 5: If you're here all day, they will constantly be inviting
- 29:32Speaker 5: you to, uh you.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Know, partake of what they have.
- 29:35Speaker 5: So the hospitality is great up until kickoff, and then
- 29:39Speaker 5: at that point when I invite family and friends here
- 29:41Speaker 5: or friends from other schools, all bets are off kickoff.
- 29:45Speaker 5: But you could say the same thing in Austin. Absolutely,
- 29:47Speaker 5: That's why we both are lucky to be at the
- 29:49Speaker 5: places we are, without question, no.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Doubt about it, and I'm looking forward to having opportunity
- 29:53Speaker 1: to call my first game down at Tiger Stadium. Chris
- 29:56Speaker 1: Player is play by play voice of those fighting Bengels
- 30:00Speaker 1: from LSU. I really appreciate the time, Chris. I look
- 30:03Speaker 1: forward to seeing you in November.
- 30:05Speaker 5: Yes, absolutely looking forward to it. Craig, thanks for having
- 30:07Speaker 5: me on, and I appreciate your friendship. Appreciate the great
- 30:11Speaker 5: work that you do. Listen to you all the time,
- 30:13Speaker 5: and a week or two ahead of time. If you're
- 30:15Speaker 5: looking for a great spot. If I don't know what
- 30:18Speaker 5: I know people that do, so hit me up.
- 30:20Speaker 2: I'll do it. Thank you, sir, appreciate it.
- 30:23Speaker 1: That's Chris Blair, play by play voice of the LSU Tigers.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Outstanding play by play broadcast and then all around good dude,
- 30:30Speaker 1: all right up next we get to endconceivable here on
- 30:34Speaker 1: a yacht Rock Wednesday afternoon here on Sports Radio AM
- 30:37Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone of the IR Radio app hour
- 30:48Speaker 1: number two here on a yacht Rock Wednesday. Glad to
- 30:52Speaker 1: have you with us here in Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 30:54Speaker 1: under the zone right way, joined by the.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Producer Jay Carman. I know, I know, I know, I
- 30:59Speaker 2: know you don't have to say it. I know we
- 31:02Speaker 2: didn't get to the first magazine giveaway in the first
- 31:04Speaker 2: hour of the program. That's not the first time it's happening.
- 31:06Speaker 2: It's the first time this season. So here's how we
- 31:09Speaker 2: make up for that.
- 31:10Speaker 1: We're gonna do one right now, and we're gonna do
- 31:11Speaker 1: one before the hour is over, and then we'll have
- 31:13Speaker 1: two done before we get to the four o'clock hour.
- 31:17Speaker 1: So the trivia question will come a little later this hour,
- 31:21Speaker 1: but we're going to do the random thing here right now.
- 31:25Speaker 1: To be in the queue to have a shot to
- 31:29Speaker 1: get pick up a copy of the magazine, you have
- 31:31Speaker 1: to have the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your smartphone, be
- 31:36Speaker 1: an iPhone, Android, whatever.
- 31:38Speaker 2: You have to have the phone downloaded, the app downloaded the.
- 31:41Speaker 1: iPhone, the iHeart Radio app on your iPhone or your
- 31:46Speaker 1: Android easy for you to say. So you have it,
- 31:50Speaker 1: have it downloaded, and then you do a search for
- 31:53Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the zone. It will pop right up.
- 31:57Speaker 1: And then when it does pop up, you'll see the
- 31:59Speaker 1: red butt with a white microphone and you'll press that.
- 32:04Speaker 2: That's our talk back feature. That's our talkback microphone.
- 32:07Speaker 1: And all you have to do is say I want
- 32:08Speaker 1: the magazine and give us your name and number.
- 32:11Speaker 2: So I'm going to give one away right now to.
- 32:17Speaker 1: The fourteenth person in the queue, fourteen, number fourteen.
- 32:25Speaker 2: So just go ahead and start a loading, and.
- 32:28Speaker 1: If you think you didn't get in or whatever, you
- 32:30Speaker 1: can always reload and try to do it that way
- 32:34Speaker 1: and do it again. But the fourteenth person in the
- 32:37Speaker 1: queue says, I want the magazine. That's going to get
- 32:39Speaker 1: a copy of Dave Canil's Texas Football Magazine. It's as
- 32:42Speaker 1: simple as that. Later this hour, we'll have a trivia
- 32:44Speaker 1: question and if you can answer that, be the first
- 32:48Speaker 1: one to answer the trivia question correctly, you'll pick up
- 32:50Speaker 1: a copy of the magazine. Then we'll have another random
- 32:53Speaker 1: giveaway in the four o'clock hours, so we'll do that
- 32:57Speaker 1: as well.
- 32:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 33:01Speaker 1: We had a chance on the first time of the
- 33:02Speaker 1: program to visit with Chris Blair, play by play voice
- 33:04Speaker 1: of the LSU Tigers. As we continue our SEC football
- 33:08Speaker 1: previews tomorrow into the Volunteer State we go, we'll take
- 33:12Speaker 1: a look at the Vanderbilt Commodores and Andrew Ali Greta,
- 33:16Speaker 1: their play by play voice, will join us tomorrow and
- 33:20Speaker 1: we'll visit with him, and then we'll close out the
- 33:22Speaker 1: week staying in the volunteer state by looking at the
- 33:24Speaker 1: Tennessee volunteers. Mike Keith, the Vaults play by play voice,
- 33:28Speaker 1: joins us on Friday to do that as we visit
- 33:32Speaker 1: with all of the play by play voices around the
- 33:33Speaker 1: Southeastern Conference and have them on board. Okay, let's jump
- 33:38Speaker 1: to pro football. Cowboys and Rams had a combined practice yesterday,
- 33:45Speaker 1: and you mentioned Puka Nakua left early out of that practice.
- 33:50Speaker 1: He's said a little bit of trouble with the groin
- 33:53Speaker 1: and left the practice early on that. We'll see how
- 33:57Speaker 1: that ultimately pans out. Earlier this morning on the Dan
- 34:01Speaker 1: Patrick Show, he heard here on thirteen Under the Zone,
- 34:04Speaker 1: he had Ross Tucker, the NFL television radio analyst for
- 34:10Speaker 1: CBSTV and for radio with Westwood One.
- 34:15Speaker 2: He had him on.
- 34:16Speaker 1: By the way, he talked about Ross Tucker moving up
- 34:21Speaker 1: in the pecking order and he's gonna work with Iron Eagle.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Iron Eagle had worked with JJ Watt. JJ Watt is
- 34:29Speaker 1: being paired with Jim Nantz.
- 34:31Speaker 6: Hello, friends, I mean, it sounds like even though all
- 34:37Speaker 6: they've said about Tony Romo is just that he is
- 34:40Speaker 6: on leave, but they didn't say he's been fired, But
- 34:43Speaker 6: a lot of people think they're just using that as
- 34:45Speaker 6: an opportunity to see about getting out of the contract
- 34:51Speaker 6: with Romo.
- 34:53Speaker 2: So we'll see if that's Yeah, if.
- 34:56Speaker 4: That is the case, I feel like people, at least
- 34:59Speaker 4: in eye circles have kind of soured on Tony Romo
- 35:02Speaker 4: in the booth a little bit over the last couple
- 35:04Speaker 4: of years.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Still, I still think he adds a lot.
- 35:08Speaker 4: Obviously obviously you know, troubling, troubling things in the offseason here.
- 35:13Speaker 4: I mean, I think they're looking for more information to
- 35:15Speaker 4: see how that kind of shakes out before they come
- 35:17Speaker 4: out with the final decision.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, is it just going to be suspended.
- 35:21Speaker 1: For a while and then and then even if it is,
- 35:25Speaker 1: and if you do that, what does that mean if
- 35:29Speaker 1: you decide to bring him back, or are you gonna again,
- 35:33Speaker 1: uh shake up the broadcast cruise again? Are you gonna
- 35:38Speaker 1: send Ross Tucker back down further? Are you gonna send
- 35:40Speaker 1: JJ Watt back down to work with Iron Eagle again?
- 35:43Speaker 3: I thought that was a good pairing last year.
- 35:45Speaker 2: It was.
- 35:45Speaker 1: And let me say, by the way, I don't think
- 35:49Speaker 1: in terms of working with a play by play guy,
- 35:53Speaker 1: I don't think that's a demotion. In fact, I think
- 35:55Speaker 1: it's a promotion if you had to work with Iron Eagle.
- 35:57Speaker 1: I think he's as good a play by play guy
- 35:59Speaker 1: as there is in the world when it comes to
- 36:02Speaker 1: football and basketball. He's tremendous. And his son's pretty good too.
- 36:06Speaker 3: But people ask me who has the belt?
- 36:10Speaker 4: Who is you know at the top of the game,
- 36:11Speaker 4: and I frequently mentioned I an Eagle.
- 36:13Speaker 2: I think he's the best. I really do. I think
- 36:16Speaker 2: he's I think he's the best in UH in football
- 36:21Speaker 2: and basketball. I end up doing baseball, but but he's.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Could you imagine if he did, he'd.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Be good at it. He could probably be good at it.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Steve rock him out, I had so many years ago,
- 36:33Speaker 1: tell me and I wish I could have heard this
- 36:36Speaker 1: when he was calling games for UH CBS on television
- 36:42Speaker 1: and Westwood One on radio or with CBS Radio network
- 36:45Speaker 1: at the time. Jack Buck, who's calling those football and
- 36:48Speaker 1: of course the father of Joe.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Buck, who is you know on on ESPN Jeopardy.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right, he's on that too, Jack Buck, who
- 37:00Speaker 1: could do just about anything. When he worked at he
- 37:04Speaker 1: home based out of Saint Louis, as is the Cardinals
- 37:07Speaker 1: announcer on the radio for decades and then work national TVs.
- 37:13Speaker 1: He guess he did the play by play on Super
- 37:15Speaker 1: Bowl four. I know that obviously. He did World Series
- 37:20Speaker 1: for several years for CBS.
- 37:22Speaker 2: We will see you Tomorrow night.
- 37:24Speaker 1: You know, Braves and Twins in ninety one on I
- 37:28Speaker 1: think it was the Kirby Pucket home run when he
- 37:30Speaker 1: said that Game six. And that's why when Joe Buck
- 37:33Speaker 1: did it twenty years later in twenty eleven, David Freese,
- 37:39Speaker 1: I thought it was pretty cool. Hey, yeah, I did.
- 37:42Speaker 1: I really did think it was think it was. And
- 37:46Speaker 1: Joe and I've.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Had a chance to meet him and visit with him
- 37:49Speaker 2: a little bit at the Sportscaster of the Year banquet
- 37:53Speaker 2: in North Carolina a couple of years ago that he'll
- 37:56Speaker 2: tell you it was one of those things that came
- 37:58Speaker 2: to in the moment.
- 37:59Speaker 1: He did not play to say that. How can you
- 38:01Speaker 1: plan to say when you got to walk off home run?
- 38:03Speaker 1: It came to him in the moment. And that's why
- 38:05Speaker 1: I respected that, because when people would ask me about
- 38:08Speaker 1: light the tower, orange or the other calls that I've made,
- 38:11Speaker 1: he came to me in the moment.
- 38:12Speaker 2: I can't plan to say the things that I play.
- 38:16Speaker 2: If I do, it's going to sound at the best
- 38:19Speaker 2: plan and at the worst screwed up.
- 38:22Speaker 1: So I can't do that. I have to let it
- 38:24Speaker 1: organically hit me in the moment. And that's what it
- 38:26Speaker 1: did for Joe Buck when he did that, he repeated
- 38:29Speaker 1: what his father said twenty years ago, almost to the
- 38:33Speaker 1: night I think it was game six, just as it
- 38:36Speaker 1: was Game six for Twins Braves when he said, and
- 38:39Speaker 1: we'll see you tomorrow night.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Off of that, but.
- 38:44Speaker 1: You know, it does make me wonder that you know
- 38:47Speaker 1: what's going to happen if you shake up the chemistry,
- 38:52Speaker 1: You're going to shake it up again and do that
- 38:54Speaker 1: if it comes down to that.
- 38:56Speaker 2: I guess we'll find out on down the road.
- 38:58Speaker 1: But I do think I an Eagles about it good
- 39:00Speaker 1: as you can get in football baseball. I think Joe
- 39:04Speaker 1: Davis does a really good job. And I listened to
- 39:07Speaker 1: him night after night because of being a Dodger fan,
- 39:09Speaker 1: and I listen to him do a lot. I think
- 39:10Speaker 1: he does about ninety ninety five of the Dodger games,
- 39:14Speaker 1: doesn't do them all, like he's not doing the series
- 39:16Speaker 1: with Kansas City.
- 39:17Speaker 2: So Steven Nelson's doing it working with Oral Herdeizer.
- 39:23Speaker 4: I think him and Jason Bennetti are my two favorites
- 39:25Speaker 4: on baseball right now, and they're very different.
- 39:27Speaker 2: They are very different, and I do like them both.
- 39:30Speaker 2: I do.
- 39:30Speaker 1: I do think they're really really good. And then there's
- 39:35Speaker 1: other ones as well. And basketball.
- 39:37Speaker 2: I think Mike Breen's about as good as he gets.
- 39:39Speaker 2: I think he's really really good.
- 39:41Speaker 1: And like I said, Iron Eagle is as well, and
- 39:43Speaker 1: he does the nets when he's not busy with other
- 39:45Speaker 1: assignments as well. So anyway, just some thoughts on that
- 39:50Speaker 1: we need a break when we come back. We're here
- 39:51Speaker 1: from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach, and we are
- 39:55Speaker 1: also going to hear from Dak Prescott, the Cowboys quarterback.
- 39:59Speaker 1: We'll do that here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday afternoon
- 40:03Speaker 1: on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the
- 40:04Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app Here on a yon Rock Wednesday, Mcgreat.
- 40:14Speaker 2: David Sanborne on the saxophone Betune. Anything you want a song.
- 40:20Speaker 1: That was composed right and written by none other than
- 40:23Speaker 1: the Godfather Michael McDonald.
- 40:25Speaker 4: YEP, David Sandborn Michael McDonald co writing composing credits on
- 40:29Speaker 4: this track from nineteen eighty.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Right in the wheelhouse of yacht Rocke and this one,
- 40:40Speaker 2: you know, you just had to know we would never
- 40:42Speaker 2: stray too far from Michael McDonald, even on days when
- 40:47Speaker 2: we might not necessarily bump back with a song from the.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Godfather from Michael McDonald. But he did collaborate on this
- 40:56Speaker 1: with David Sanborn. As we continue here on a yacht
- 40:59Speaker 1: Rock Wednesday, and let's talk some Dallas Cowboys for we
- 41:02Speaker 1: told you earlier in the program. In fact, in the
- 41:05Speaker 1: Inconceivable Oh before we get to that, I didn't, as
- 41:08Speaker 1: they would say, pay off the teas I was talking
- 41:10Speaker 1: about Jack Buck during the break because we mentioned you know,
- 41:14Speaker 1: if if you could imagine envision Iron Eagle calling baseball,
- 41:18Speaker 1: and he'd probably be really good.
- 41:19Speaker 2: You get pretty good impersonation of the types of.
- 41:23Speaker 1: High notes that he would hit, and the note and
- 41:26Speaker 1: the comments of exclamation he might offer in a big moment.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's something like that now.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Jack Buck, as I mentioned, was known for doing football
- 41:39Speaker 1: and baseball, great football broadcaster called super Bowl four on television,
- 41:45Speaker 1: a lot of Super Bowls playoff games and on what
- 41:49Speaker 1: was then CBS Radio now Westwood One. And in fact
- 41:54Speaker 1: I used to work with the late Hank Strand, the
- 41:57Speaker 1: former Chiefs coach for years, you know. And he would say, well, Henry,
- 42:02Speaker 1: they're not doing well tonight, and and Hanks Tram will
- 42:06Speaker 1: come back say, well, it's like throwing popcorn at a battleship.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Jack can't get past the defense. You'd have stuff like that,
- 42:11Speaker 1: great chemistry in the air. And there was a there
- 42:16Speaker 1: was a moment in a Monday night game years ago. Uh,
- 42:21Speaker 1: the Raiders are playing the Dolphins, and Jack, like Brent
- 42:28Speaker 1: Musburger and like some other broadcasters, was known to occasionally
- 42:31Speaker 1: lay down a wager or two on a game.
- 42:34Speaker 2: So'd be on the phone with a book, you know,
- 42:36Speaker 2: for the game. And that night.
- 42:40Speaker 1: The Raiders were that the game was in Miami, and
- 42:43Speaker 1: the Raiders were like a three point underdog, supposed to
- 42:46Speaker 1: be really good game at the old Orange Bowl in Miami.
- 42:50Speaker 2: And so.
- 42:51Speaker 1: And the reason why I know the story is because
- 42:53Speaker 1: the man who produced that broadcast I got to know
- 42:58Speaker 1: was later my executive producer in the studio when I
- 43:00Speaker 1: was the anchor studio anchor in the old Southwest Conference
- 43:03Speaker 1: radio network in the late eighties, and he told me
- 43:05Speaker 1: the story that that you know, Jack occasionally would have
- 43:11Speaker 1: have a wager, not none of a large mat he said,
- 43:13Speaker 1: what a big bet or something like. But he would
- 43:14Speaker 1: ocasionally drop a wager. And he was on the phone
- 43:17Speaker 1: with a bookie.
- 43:19Speaker 2: For the game. That's right, give me the Raiders and
- 43:21Speaker 2: the points. I'll take the Raiders. It was that kind
- 43:23Speaker 2: of thing. Well, that night, the Raider stunk it up
- 43:27Speaker 2: and the Dolphins beat him something like thirty to six.
- 43:29Speaker 1: They crushed him. Mark Wilson was the quarterback for the
- 43:31Speaker 1: Raiders and he just couldn't get anything going. And they
- 43:34Speaker 1: got to a deal, but we got first down, they
- 43:36Speaker 1: got nothing. They got second down, they got nothing. And
- 43:39Speaker 1: they comes to the line of scrimmage and he's frustrated.
- 43:43Speaker 1: This is like early fourth quarter, and they get trump.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Jack is obviously seeing his wager go down the tubes,
- 43:49Speaker 1: and Mark Wilson walks to the line of scrimmage and
- 43:54Speaker 1: and and doesn't like what he sees and he calls
- 43:57Speaker 1: time out. That's going it goes and Jack Buck, because
- 44:01Speaker 1: the producers waving the car to pitch a break at him, says, well, well,
- 44:06Speaker 1: Henry to Hankstram, Well, Henry, the Raiders have proven the
- 44:09Speaker 1: night they can't run, they can't pass, but they can
- 44:13Speaker 1: call time out.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Back in a moment.
- 44:16Speaker 1: So in our business, in uh In, in play by
- 44:22Speaker 1: play land, we have a term, and I say we,
- 44:27Speaker 1: I mean several guys I know Bill Schoning.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Is one of them.
- 44:30Speaker 1: When we were working together, several others that we would
- 44:34Speaker 1: call a jack buck. And what that would mean is
- 44:39Speaker 1: we had to get in another break and make good
- 44:41Speaker 1: or something like that. And it does occasionally happen like that.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Say what they didn't call a time out? There wasn't
- 44:49Speaker 1: an official timeout for a long time, saying a quarter
- 44:53Speaker 1: of a long one game, and then we would get
- 44:56Speaker 1: to a break, but we're behind a break and we
- 44:58Speaker 1: need to get another one in, and it was going
- 45:01Speaker 1: to be one of those TV breaks it's like three
- 45:03Speaker 1: minutes and fifteen seconds, and our breaks were like ninety seconds.
- 45:07Speaker 1: So we knew I had enough time, So I pitched
- 45:09Speaker 1: the break. The commercials running, and I tell the studio
- 45:12Speaker 1: producer on the line, I'm going to give you a
- 45:14Speaker 1: jack buck here, and he knew what I meant, and
- 45:17Speaker 1: so blah blah blah, and you'd hear the spot, the
- 45:18Speaker 1: spot would end, and then it'd come right back to
- 45:20Speaker 1: me and say.
- 45:21Speaker 2: Three forty three to go third quarter.
- 45:23Speaker 1: Log worn's up by fifteen back in a moment, a
- 45:25Speaker 1: long horn football continues in a moment, just a real
- 45:27Speaker 1: quick pitch. We would call that a Jack Buck because
- 45:30Speaker 1: you're getting to a break very very quickly.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Okay, I give it something.
- 45:33Speaker 1: He did it for an entirely different reason, right, he
- 45:36Speaker 1: was thoroughly.
- 45:37Speaker 2: Disgusted without the game was going.
- 45:38Speaker 1: But what I was going to say about Jack Buck
- 45:40Speaker 1: was he was very, very talented, even though we did,
- 45:44Speaker 1: you know, football and baseball. I heard that he had
- 45:48Speaker 1: been like an MC for ballroom dancing and several other
- 45:52Speaker 1: events as well. And then the other thing I heard
- 45:55Speaker 1: was that he substituted once for the great one of
- 45:58Speaker 1: the greatest hockey broadcasts of all time. Dan Kelly did
- 46:01Speaker 1: the Sing Louis Blues for years, and his son did
- 46:03Speaker 1: the Blue John for years, and they were all out
- 46:07Speaker 1: of km O X and Saint Louis and Dan Kelly
- 46:10Speaker 1: called in sick or couldn't make it or whatever.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Jack runs down and he does the hockey game.
- 46:14Speaker 1: And supposedly he was pretty good at calling a hockey game.
- 46:18Speaker 1: That would It made me think about that when you
- 46:19Speaker 1: mentioned I an eagle, the possibility to prospect of him
- 46:23Speaker 1: calling baseball. Let's hear from Brian Schottenneimer, the Cowboys head coach.
- 46:28Speaker 1: They had that joint practice with the Rams yesterday, so
- 46:33Speaker 1: he's asked for some overall thoughts on the practice they
- 46:37Speaker 1: had with Los Angeles.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:39Speaker 7: Well, first of all, I'm always appreciative of Sean and
- 46:41Speaker 7: the entire RAMS organization. We shull have a great relationship.
- 46:44Speaker 7: We work well with him. Their first class all the way.
- 46:47Speaker 7: Probably helps a litt bit that I was in the
- 46:49Speaker 7: Rams organization many many moons ago. But really good work,
- 46:54Speaker 7: chippy at times between two very competitive football teams. So
- 46:58Speaker 7: I love the work. We'll go back to see the film.
- 47:01Speaker 7: I know Justin Barron had a great day, you know,
- 47:03Speaker 7: but overall I thought it was very pleased with the work.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Okay, and toward that end, from what he was able
- 47:10Speaker 1: to observe, what did he make of his offense?
- 47:12Speaker 2: Again, you know, we're pretty talented.
- 47:14Speaker 7: I thought, again, we spread the ball around pretty well.
- 47:16Speaker 7: They're a very good coverage unit. There's a lot of
- 47:18Speaker 7: similarities with what they do defensively to what we do.
- 47:21Speaker 7: But I thought we spread the ball around pretty good.
- 47:23Speaker 7: I thought George had a really good day and overall,
- 47:26Speaker 7: I was pleased with.
- 47:26Speaker 2: The way we move the line scrimmage, no question about that.
- 47:31Speaker 1: The the other thing to get to from Brian Schottenheimer
- 47:36Speaker 1: and describing his team's work, how big is the improvement
- 47:43Speaker 1: at least that he's been able to tell so far
- 47:46Speaker 1: with his defensive unit after all the struggles they had
- 47:48Speaker 1: a year ago.
- 47:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we're a different We're a different defense.
- 47:51Speaker 2: You guys know that.
- 47:52Speaker 7: I mean that's you can look at us on paper
- 47:54Speaker 7: and see we're a different defense. Having practs against us
- 47:56Speaker 7: every day. The mentality and the mindset of the defense
- 48:00Speaker 7: is different. So I think that's great. They challenge you
- 48:03Speaker 7: a lot of different ways. They're a very, very physical
- 48:05Speaker 7: run team. They run the hell out of the duo
- 48:07Speaker 7: play where they just gap things down and the ball
- 48:09Speaker 7: usually bounces to corners and Kyrien Williams and those guys
- 48:12Speaker 7: are very physical. Matthew Stafford's got an unbelievable ability to
- 48:16Speaker 7: get the ball out of his hand fast, so they're
- 48:17Speaker 7: hard to get home on.
- 48:18Speaker 2: But a few guys jumped out today.
- 48:20Speaker 7: Quinn Williams, I think we probably should keep that contract.
- 48:23Speaker 7: I think that was a good contract for us. Thrilled
- 48:26Speaker 7: about him. What he's brought to this team from a
- 48:28Speaker 7: leadership standpoint is can't be talked about enough. He wanted
- 48:32Speaker 7: to be here. It was all part of the grand scheme.
- 48:34Speaker 7: We had the big trade to try to figure out
- 48:37Speaker 7: something like that and couldn't be happy enough for them.
- 48:39Speaker 7: But I thought it was a battle. You know, they
- 48:41Speaker 7: had their plays, we had our plays. It's what a
- 48:43Speaker 7: joint practice should look like.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Okay, all right, they worked on two fields yesterday and
- 48:49Speaker 1: Sean he was kind of bouncing between back and forth.
- 48:51Speaker 2: So how did he make that work?
- 48:52Speaker 7: You know, I just I wanted to kind of see
- 48:54Speaker 7: these guys, all of them compete. I wanted to see
- 48:56Speaker 7: us play fourth down defense. I wanted to see us
- 48:58Speaker 7: play third down offense. I want to see us in
- 48:59Speaker 7: the reds and I want to see a said red
- 49:01Speaker 7: zone defense, And so I let the coordinators call it. Clayton,
- 49:04Speaker 7: I thought did a really good job of spreading the
- 49:05Speaker 7: ball around. A ton of respect for you know, Coach Shula.
- 49:09Speaker 7: You know, Nat sure Lee's gonna be a credible offensive
- 49:11Speaker 7: coordinator for Sewing and his guys.
- 49:13Speaker 2: But all in all, I got my steps into day.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I bet he did. There was one other moment.
- 49:18Speaker 1: I guess when they were a bit of a kerfuffle.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Is that what the deal with?
- 49:21Speaker 4: This was not so much a kerfuffle, just a little
- 49:24Speaker 4: celebration after a chippy route or something.
- 49:27Speaker 3: I think I showed this to you yesterday late in
- 49:30Speaker 3: the show.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Told me about it. I didn't. I didn't even know
- 49:33Speaker 2: if I saw it. Well, but maybe I just told you.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Yeah, so it involved George Pickens, it did he? Yeah,
- 49:37Speaker 1: he kicked the pylon. Oh, he kicked the pylon? Okay,
- 49:41Speaker 1: all right, all right, when I saw pilon, I thought
- 49:44Speaker 1: you meant he was piling on or something.
- 49:46Speaker 3: Oh no, luckily, not that big of a scrap.
- 49:48Speaker 1: All right, So yours with Shotty and the exchange that
- 49:51Speaker 1: happened in discussing it, I did not, but that doesn't
- 49:54Speaker 1: surprise me.
- 49:54Speaker 2: How far did he kick it?
- 49:56Speaker 5: Good?
- 49:56Speaker 2: Should he be the backup to Aubrey? Okay, well we'll
- 49:59Speaker 2: take a look at that. Did they throw a flag?
- 50:01Speaker 2: I'm not sure?
- 50:03Speaker 7: Yeah, okay, we'll probably yeah a little bit more, Okay,
- 50:06Speaker 7: any other Sam I worry about his toes. I worry
- 50:08Speaker 7: about him Jamin his toes. There's sandbags in there. But
- 50:10Speaker 7: our guys have fun out here, and like I said,
- 50:12Speaker 7: I want him to do that. When you're playing real games,
- 50:14Speaker 7: we can't do that. We can't shoot ourselves in the foot. Yeah, no,
- 50:17Speaker 7: don't find it there. But I'm not surprised by that.
- 50:19Speaker 7: And I like how he played along with Okay, we'll
- 50:21Speaker 7: take a look at him as a backup to Aubrey
- 50:23Speaker 7: Brandon Aubrey as well.
- 50:25Speaker 1: We'll hear some more from a Shotty coming up next
- 50:28Speaker 1: hour to the text line where they're one of that.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Seapal said, you know Jack Buck had that deeper, clear voice.
- 50:36Speaker 2: He did.
- 50:38Speaker 1: He would you know one thing that you could tell
- 50:40Speaker 1: when Jack was getting later in his career. Jack would
- 50:44Speaker 1: follow some basic tenets of play by play.
- 50:50Speaker 2: And here's what I mean by that.
- 50:53Speaker 1: If you call, if you're describing a play and it's
- 50:58Speaker 1: a pass play and the quarterback hits a receiver downfield
- 51:04Speaker 1: and then he's caught, the most important thing is what,
- 51:07Speaker 1: Jay Herman, what's the most important thing when you encounter
- 51:11Speaker 1: a play like that as a play by play.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Guy, remind me of what the play is. It's a
- 51:14Speaker 2: deep past.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Year Let's say it's a deep crossing over the middle
- 51:18Speaker 1: about thirty yards downfield, something like that. What's the most
- 51:20Speaker 1: important thing is a play by play guy to describe.
- 51:23Speaker 3: In that and you're calling it on TV right.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Uh no, radio radio. What's the most important thing?
- 51:30Speaker 3: Well, you want to identify who made the catch.
- 51:33Speaker 1: That's the second most important. Where the yard line is
- 51:35Speaker 1: that's the third most important thing. The most important thing
- 51:38Speaker 1: to describe is that he made the cash. Sure, So
- 51:41Speaker 1: a thing would be something like shotgun stamp back to
- 51:44Speaker 1: manning play action, looking.
- 51:46Speaker 2: Deep down over the middle. He's got Wingo open and
- 51:48Speaker 2: he caught it Wingo with a catch down.
- 51:50Speaker 1: To the twenty five yard line. That's a pick up
- 51:52Speaker 1: of thirty two yards. You know something like that. Sure, Yeah,
- 51:55Speaker 1: I guess that would be number one.
- 51:56Speaker 3: On radio. They can't see that.
- 51:57Speaker 2: It's cast exactly.
- 51:58Speaker 1: That's why I said that, first, what happened, Then the
- 52:01Speaker 1: description of you know where it is, you know, and
- 52:04Speaker 1: then you can throw in the other stuff like that,
- 52:05Speaker 1: the you know whatever, and then the analyst comes in.
- 52:08Speaker 2: The reason why I bring this up is because Jack Buck.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Would describe in that order, first the pass that would
- 52:18Speaker 1: be caught. Then he would try to get to who
- 52:23Speaker 1: caught it, and sometimes it would take a little longer
- 52:26Speaker 1: on that maybe his spotter wasn't that good. Maybe he
- 52:28Speaker 1: couldn't see that well from the angle, whatever, But I
- 52:31Speaker 1: remember I used to hear this from time to time.
- 52:33Speaker 2: And I remember one time in the Cowboy game. They're
- 52:36Speaker 2: playing the Cardinals and he says, third and ten the
- 52:39Speaker 2: Cowboys at the Saint at the Arizona forty four shot
- 52:42Speaker 2: gun snap back, takeman Apeman looking deep, he's throwing deep.
- 52:46Speaker 2: That ball is caught. It's caught. It's caught down at
- 52:50Speaker 2: the twenty two and tackle there at the twenty two.
- 52:53Speaker 2: The caught. The catch was made by Irvin. Michael Irvin.
- 52:58Speaker 2: We exaggerated the thing that say it is caught. It's
- 53:01Speaker 2: caught by a member of the Cowboys in a white jersey.
- 53:04Speaker 2: He's got an eight on his jersey. He's got eighty eight.
- 53:07Speaker 2: That's Michael Irvin. It wasn't quite that to that extreme,
- 53:11Speaker 2: but he would.
- 53:11Speaker 1: He would make sure that you knew that the pass
- 53:15Speaker 1: was caught. That's the first thing. Then where is the
- 53:18Speaker 1: ball or he caught it? Then you can get into
- 53:21Speaker 1: identifying unless you can see the guy wide open. You know,
- 53:24Speaker 1: you'll hear me sometimes say, you know, whatever, manning the
- 53:27Speaker 1: throw deep downfield, he's got wingo wide.
- 53:29Speaker 2: Open and then Ryan makes.
- 53:32Speaker 1: The catch and he's down to the twenty to the
- 53:33Speaker 1: fifteen run out of bounds at the twelve yard line.
- 53:35Speaker 1: That the description comes in afterwards, But you're identifying that
- 53:38Speaker 1: the pass has caught.
- 53:39Speaker 2: You're identifying where the guy is and who the guy is.
- 53:42Speaker 4: If I play one oh, one, eh, there's some of that.
- 53:44Speaker 4: Here's some of that in Joe too. He'll get his son.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Who will passes caught? God?
- 53:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and what did you say with Bay said,
- 53:52Speaker 1: that's a drive and then the left field or whatever
- 53:55Speaker 1: you know, Yeah, yeah, But it's different on TV.
- 54:00Speaker 2: It's different because, in the immortal words of.
- 54:03Speaker 1: My broadcast partner on Longhorn Baseball, Keith Morland, we've got pictures.
- 54:07Speaker 1: We've got pictures, so you can see a lot of that,
- 54:10Speaker 1: so you can let it trail. And the analyst takes
- 54:13Speaker 1: a more prominent role on a telecast as supposed to
- 54:16Speaker 1: the radio, when the most important thing is telling people
- 54:19Speaker 1: what happened, then who did it? And where the ball
- 54:23Speaker 1: is or what? And then where the ball is and
- 54:25Speaker 1: who and who did it? That's those are the important
- 54:28Speaker 1: tenets to let people know what's going on. As I say,
- 54:31Speaker 1: transmit the message make sure that what's coming out of
- 54:34Speaker 1: the box is easy enough for folks to understand. All right,
- 54:38Speaker 1: we got more coming up. We're gonna hear from Dak
- 54:39Speaker 1: Prescott next. I'm thirteen under the Zone.
- 54:45Speaker 2: You know this.
- 54:47Speaker 1: This tune was actually I believe, recorded in nineteen seventy
- 54:51Speaker 1: six by holding Sarah Smile. So you might say, maybe
- 54:56Speaker 1: it's just a little bit ahead of a bump of
- 54:58Speaker 1: where supposedly the his historical demarcation begins for yacht rock.
- 55:03Speaker 1: But the style, like I said, you can't you can't
- 55:05Speaker 1: really pin it down to an exact year, because there's
- 55:08Speaker 1: some tunes, some early Steelee Dan or some other stuff
- 55:11Speaker 1: that falls into the category. And then there's something in
- 55:15Speaker 1: late as shot a nineteen ninety you know, Smooth Operator.
- 55:19Speaker 2: That's a yacht rock too, you know it. Just so
- 55:22Speaker 2: I just.
- 55:22Speaker 4: Pick out some stuff from today that sounds probably similar
- 55:25Speaker 4: to this.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Probably something, and so the great Hall and oates there
- 55:30Speaker 1: with Sarah Smile.
- 55:32Speaker 2: It's one of my favorites. There.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Let's hear from Dak Prescotty Cowboys quarterback again. They had
- 55:38Speaker 1: the practice, the joint practice with the Rams yesterday, and
- 55:41Speaker 1: he was asked about his thoughts on his offensive unit, first.
- 55:45Speaker 8: Time going against you know, an another jersey, another team.
- 55:48Speaker 2: I thought it was good. I thought it was good.
- 55:50Speaker 2: Is it quite where we wanted to be?
- 55:51Speaker 8: No, not necessarily, but started off, you know, obviously hitting
- 55:55Speaker 8: the run, so some things are physical. It's hard to
- 55:57Speaker 8: tell exactly what a game is, you know what guys
- 55:58Speaker 8: aren't going to the ground. But then as it developed,
- 56:01Speaker 8: getting into the red zone, even the two minute there,
- 56:03Speaker 8: you know, getting called down where it looked like.
- 56:04Speaker 2: He's right at the sticks.
- 56:05Speaker 8: Just part of practice, but ultimately felt good about it.
- 56:09Speaker 1: Other than him kicking the pylon, was there anything about
- 56:12Speaker 1: George Pickens that stood out to Dack?
- 56:14Speaker 2: And George is being George.
- 56:16Speaker 8: That's that's what I expect from him, what he expects
- 56:18Speaker 8: from myself. There's still probably a ball, you know, a
- 56:21Speaker 8: ball or two that we want to you know, correct
- 56:23Speaker 8: one thing or another, make it a completion. We had
- 56:25Speaker 8: the one interception and throwing it to George there, which
- 56:28Speaker 8: can get cleaned up very simply. So, yes, what I
- 56:30Speaker 8: expect from George. He just does great things. And today
- 56:32Speaker 8: was another showing event.
- 56:33Speaker 2: All right.
- 56:34Speaker 1: As I mentioned, they were working on two different fields,
- 56:35Speaker 1: the Cowboys offense against the Rams defense on one field
- 56:39Speaker 1: and the Rams offense against the Cowboys defense on the
- 56:42Speaker 1: other field. And you know, that was one thing Ward
- 56:47Speaker 1: filtered back to Dac, that the defense had some success
- 56:50Speaker 1: against that Rams offense.
- 56:52Speaker 2: So is that a confidence builder? Yeah?
- 56:54Speaker 8: Great, I'm looking forward to watching it. I know I
- 56:55Speaker 8: heard the cheers and the holler and could tell those
- 56:57Speaker 8: our guys obviously they've been doing it, you know, throughout
- 57:00Speaker 8: camp and getting after so it's cool to see just
- 57:02Speaker 8: that that energy, that identity continue and I know they're
- 57:06Speaker 8: pumped about it, but I know they're not satisfied to
- 57:08Speaker 8: what they've done. They're going to go back and same
- 57:10Speaker 8: as we are, and look at it, be hard on
- 57:11Speaker 8: ourselves and see where we can get better.
- 57:13Speaker 2: Okay, all right, So that's some from the Cowboys.
- 57:17Speaker 1: We'll hear some more from both Brian Schottenheimer and Dak
- 57:21Speaker 1: Prescott coming up next hour. I was asked somebody if
- 57:24Speaker 1: somebody asked me about this, I got an email and
- 57:28Speaker 1: and this all was about the giveaway for the Dave
- 57:32Speaker 1: Campbells Texas Football magazine, and and somebody said, I hear
- 57:37Speaker 1: you say all levels of college football, and he said,
- 57:42Speaker 1: can you give some examples because all you know, I've
- 57:44Speaker 1: kind of zipped through it. And I said, you know,
- 57:47Speaker 1: division one and I'm happy to do that, and and
- 57:50Speaker 1: and the person emailing said, especially the lower divisions.
- 57:54Speaker 2: So just so you'll know.
- 57:57Speaker 1: In addition, obviously everybody's going to know about the the
- 58:00Speaker 1: schools in the in the Power four conferences. They're going
- 58:04Speaker 1: to know about Texas and Texas A and M and
- 58:09Speaker 1: Baylor and TCU in Texas Tech and Houston and s
- 58:14Speaker 1: m U all in the in the Power conferences.
- 58:17Speaker 2: There they're gonna hear from the leave out of.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Power Conference school Texas State and Texas State and U
- 58:22Speaker 1: T s A.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Uh well though they're not in the Power four Conference
- 58:27Speaker 2: power are you right? Okay? Yeah, I was. I was
- 58:30Speaker 2: messing up my cadence here, Jake. I'm going I'm going
- 58:32Speaker 2: into I'm thinking back to the FBS exert. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 58:36Speaker 1: So those were all the ones I mentioned, you know, Texas,
- 58:41Speaker 1: Texas A and M, T, c U, s m U, Baylor,
- 58:44Speaker 1: Texas Tech, the schools that are in uh Power four conferences,
- 58:49Speaker 1: s m U being in the A c C, TCU, Baylor,
- 58:53Speaker 1: Texas Tech all in the Big twelve, and of course
- 58:57Speaker 1: Texas and Texas A and M and the SEC Houston
- 58:59Speaker 1: all so in the Big twelve. So all of those
- 59:03Speaker 1: in the Power four conferences. Then there's Division one FBS
- 59:07Speaker 1: schools like North Texas, UTSA, UTEP in Texas State that
- 59:13Speaker 1: are in G six conferent Now, now we'll see over time,
- 59:17Speaker 1: time will tell if the PAC twelve can get back
- 59:19Speaker 1: to power status, going back to we used to say
- 59:23Speaker 1: Power five all the time.
- 59:24Speaker 2: It's Power four right now.
- 59:25Speaker 1: But the PAC twelve is just now regenerating this year,
- 59:30Speaker 1: and the schools that are you know, going to be
- 59:33Speaker 1: in the PAC twelve this year are schools that were
- 59:37Speaker 1: not in the PAC twelve and we're therefore we're not
- 59:41Speaker 1: power conference teams for you know, some back in their
- 59:47Speaker 1: earlier incarnation. So the schools other than other than Washington
- 59:52Speaker 1: State and Oregon State, they were they were in what
- 59:55Speaker 1: was a power conference. But right now the PAC twelve
- 59:59Speaker 1: consists of Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Texas State,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Washington State, Utah State, Colorado State, and Oregon State. So
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: it's the state conference. But anyway, all of those are
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: in there. By the way, when they get the basketball,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: gonzag is in there and they've become a much stronger
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: basketball league as well. But in the PAC twelve right now,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: those are the teams. None of those teams other in
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Oregon State and Washington State were in a power conference
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: in the earlier incarnation of the PAC twelve. And then,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: for being completely honest, those schools weren't annually tenders. Oregon
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: State would have a big year every now and then
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: they went to a Fiesta Bowl not that long ago,
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: and Washington State had a couple of good years, but
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: not a year and year out every year thing like
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: an Oregon or a Washington or a USC, even UCLA,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: those Cal Stanford you know those programs callen Stanford moving
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: to the ACC. Oregon, Washington, USC, Ucla going into the
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: Big ten, Colorado and why and Utah and Arizona and
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Arizona State all going into the Big twelve. So time
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: will tell if this PAC twelve can play to that
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: standard and get to the standard of that, But for now,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: it's you'd be accurate to say, yeah, we were talking
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: about schools that are in G six. Group of six
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: used to be a group of five forever and now
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: it's G six conferences. Let's see if I can rattle
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: them off the top of my head, Jake, you got
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: the American, you got the Sun Belt, You've got PAC twelve,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: You've got Mountain West, You've got the MAC and we hold.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: On, hold on.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: I said, that's in Mountain West. I said PAC twelve.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: I said American. I said Conference USA.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: Yep. Okay.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: So those the schools from the state of Texas that
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: are in some of the G six leagues like Texas
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: State being in the PAC twelve, North Texas UTSA Rice
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: in the American Athletic Conference, Sam Houston in Conference USA,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: as we've pointed out, So those schools that are in
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: those leagues also profiled in there. Then there's fcs from
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: the Southland Conference, and I'd mentioned those schools that are
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: in the Southland Conference like Abilene Christian and Charlton and
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: ut Rio Grand Valley, by the way, who is looked
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: at as being a real threat a second year program,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: and Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine picks the Vacaro second
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: behind Stephen F. Austin with Southeastern Louisiana Labar incarnate word McNeese, Nichols, Houston, Christian,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: East Texas A and M. It's therefore, I believe their
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: fourth season in FCS and north Western State, so there's
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: that those schools are profiled. Then the lower divisions that
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: the person emailing me asked about, we have. The Loan
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: Store Conference has Division two, Angelo State, Midwestern State, Saul,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: Ross State, Texas A and M Kingsville UT Permian Base
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: in West Texas A and M. Those are all schools
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: from the state of Texas, along with schools like Eastern
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: New Mexico, Western New Mexico, and then you get into
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Central Washington and Western Oregon.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: They're actually in the Lone Star Conference realignment. Trickling down,
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: it is.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: In Division three in the American Southwest Conference, schools like
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: East Texas, Baptist, Hardin Simmons, Howard Paint Mary Harden, Baylor, McMurray,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Shriner College there, and then you get into other Division
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: three conference like Southwestern University just up the road from
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: US in Georgetown is in the Southern Intercollegiate Letic Association
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Texas Lutheran Trinity and Austin College or other Division three
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: programs moving down the classification ladder in AIA in the
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Sooner Athletic Conference Texas College that's in Tyler, Texas, Wesley
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: and in Fort Worth, Wayland Baptist and they're in the
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: South Plains and Nelson University. If you don't know Nelson University,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: there's it's a small college in Waksahatchie that used to
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: be known as Southwestern Assemblies of God College.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: That was what it was known. Now it's Nelson University.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Wait, would that be Swag?
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty much Swag has Swag you right college. And
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: then they even get into the junior colleges the Southwest
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Junior College Football Conference with Tyler, Trinity, Valley, Navarro, Kilgore,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: Cisco and Blynn. So yes, all of those college football
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: programs are profiled in the magazine as well. We'll be
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: back to wrap up our number two one thirteen on
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: The Zone, third and final hour of the program here
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Glad to
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: have you with us here on this yacht rock Wednesday afternoon,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Craig Way joined by the producer Jay Carman. Glad to
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: have you aboard, as well as always say help you
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: get over the hump there some folks. Wednesdays the end
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: of the work week, Good on you, good for you.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Enjoy those next couple of days off and then are
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: some people whose work week actually begins on Wednesday.
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I've got a news producer friend that's the case for.
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, it happens.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: So, however your work week may be transpiring, be it
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: the beginning, middle of the end. Hopefully we can help
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: you along in that. I asked the trivia question before
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: the top of the hour. Like I said, it wouldn't
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: be difficult, and it wasn't. You had to, although we
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: did have some incorrect answers do we not on the
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: on the talkback microphone.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: I saw one person missed it. Another person just gave
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: us his name. We need the answer. It didn't give
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: us the answer.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Off of that, the question was Texas and LSU, of course,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: last played in twenty nineteen, and that was here in Austin.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: In LSU one they gave forty five thirty eight.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: The last time they had met before that was in
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: the Cotton Bowl. In fact, they played in a couple
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: of Cotton Bowls in nineteen sixty three and then then
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: forty years later January first, two thousand and three, and
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: Texas under background won the ball game thirty five to twenty.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Chris Sims had a really fine day his final game
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: as a collegiate, Roy Williams in a round long run
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: for a touchdown. Long runs played really well that day,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: actually spotted LSU attend to nothing lead and then turned
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: around and one thirty five to twenty. But my question
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: was who's the coach for LSU. And while we definitely
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: have one incorrect dame answer and maybe some others wondering
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: about it, right out of the gate, I said the
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: first correct answer, and this was the first correct answer,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: and it was the first submission right out of the
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: gate on the answer to the question.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: The answer is Nick Saban. Give me that magazine? Okay,
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: who was that?
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: By the way, that's Riley p You know Riley, you
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: could ask a little nicer me that man.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: Luckily as a winner, you are a winner, Riley, So
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: congratulations and we'll be in touch on how you can
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: pick up your copy of Dave Campbells Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: Nick Saban was the coach.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: It was the next year, the three season when LSU
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: won the national title under Nick Saban beat Oklahoma in
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: that National championship game, and then of course Saban tried
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: his hand at the NFL.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: Not so much. Didn't go so well.
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: Had that go I quit asking.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Yeah, there was the coach of the Dolphins, then of
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: course returned to Alabama and then turned on the real
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: Hall of Fame career from there. So that was the
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: answer to the trivia question. Nick Sateman was the coach
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: of that l s U team, and you said, somebody
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: gets less miles.
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, we had less miles guests in there, a
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: little little too early for less.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: You have the less miles turkey sandwich dropped there. Always
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: always like the less miles turkey sandwich.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: We were talking about that the other day because it
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: was just great at Thanksgiving when he was talking about
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: the leftover turkey sandwy, here comes. Yeah.
- 1:08:29Speaker 9: I am the easiest man to please when it comes
- 1:08:32Speaker 9: to food. I have to be honest. I think you'd say,
- 1:08:37Speaker 9: I think it's definitely the turkey with a warm gravy.
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: Maybe it's the last score or fork of food on
- 1:08:48Speaker 9: the plate, you know, that has a little bit of salt,
- 1:08:50Speaker 9: pepper and maybe a little bit of the turkey and
- 1:08:53Speaker 9: gravy and some of the stuffing that would be there.
- 1:08:57Speaker 9: Maybe just a smidge in that cranberry stuff, right, not
- 1:09:01Speaker 9: like a big kind of overwhelmed the last bike.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: But that right, there.
- 1:09:06Speaker 9: Oh, my goodness, right at last place worth a lot.
- 1:09:10Speaker 9: I might add that the turkey sandwich with mayonnaise, mustard,
- 1:09:14Speaker 9: onions and a little salad, a little little less kind
- 1:09:18Speaker 9: of makes it makes for good eating labor too done it?
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: Oh wait, you left out the best the the line.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Uh too it.
- 1:09:26Speaker 9: Makes makes for good eating labor too right. Wish you
- 1:09:30Speaker 9: hadn't mentioned that. I haven't have a lunch yet.
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: There we go.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: We get to the part we got it.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: We we actually had it trimmed down for years where
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: it just starts off with less going. I might add
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: that the turkey sandwich the leftover thing. It's funny, but
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: he got me thinking about that with with less miles.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: I don't know if anybody's noticed. And we've been following
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: the Major League baseball obviously. We have Geene Watson on
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: every week with us to talk Major League Baseball, and
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: things are getting pretty interesting with a lot of the
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: races in the nash League West. The San Diego Potters
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: have really picked up the tempo. They've taken the first
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: two games from the Milwaukee Brewers, who still have the
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: best record in all of baseball. They've won the first
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: two games in San Diego. Right now, the Brewers are
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: up to one in the top of the four. Dustin
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: May pitching for the Brewers in that contest. But the
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: Dodgers have to really struggling. They lost seven in a
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: row and eight out of nine. Have taken the first
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: two games from the Kansas City Royals. Blake's noew came
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: back last night, looked really good over the course of
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: six innings.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: Sola's not coming back soon too. Yeah, they've had him
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: on the rehab thing, so we'll see. They're hoping to
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: get him back.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: They're hoping to have shoeos Hoti pitch in September.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: They could basically make two rotations right now. The Dodgers
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: practically could.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: So we'll see Matt Matt lower Erkler no, and I'm
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: sure Eric's.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: Glad of that. Eric Lawer is the is pitching for
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: the Dodgers in the rotation as well, and he's going
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: to night.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: But anyway, this is all going on. And then, of course,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: for the last month, really and truly we've been talking
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: about the Boston Red Sox and how red hot that
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: they had been. They'd won twenty seven out of thirty,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: really climbed up and you may remember before they started
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: that big push which happened right before the All Star Game,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: and they swept the Yankees right before that, and then
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: they just ripped it in high gear. After the All
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: Star Game, we had the rant from the Red Sox
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: fan and Jake did a really good job of cleaning
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: it up when he was asked about opposing team's fans
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: coming to Fenway Park, and we figured that the guy
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: had to be quiet and that kind of had to
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: shut shut his rant down a little bit because the
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Red Sox had gotten on this thunderous role which had
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: taken them into the thick of the wild card hunt
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: and really had them also in contention to perhaps catch
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: Tampa Bay to win the American League.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: Geese, I don't know if.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: You've noticed lately, the Red Sox have lost four straight games,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: so they struggled, So the guy's probably back out. They're
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: doing the rent right back on the stick.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: What are your.
- 1:12:23Speaker 8: Thoughts on more opponent fans than home fans here at Fenway.
- 1:12:28Speaker 10: Part I have to go back to the same, you know,
- 1:12:31Speaker 10: can you want off fing fans to come here and
- 1:12:34Speaker 10: support this and team. You're got to keep your promise
- 1:12:38Speaker 10: when you tell the fucking fans. You're gonna go out
- 1:12:40Speaker 10: and support the team and you can get some bats
- 1:12:44Speaker 10: for the fucking team, and you don't do it, and
- 1:12:46Speaker 10: you go on and get pitching instead. You know, fans
- 1:12:50Speaker 10: ain't gonna buy the tickets. You know what's gonna happen.
- 1:12:54Speaker 10: And buff Atlanta is gonna come in, Baltimore is gonna
- 1:12:58Speaker 10: come in. Yankees are gonna come in. They're gonna buy
- 1:13:01Speaker 10: out the tickets. You know what's gonna happen after that?
- 1:13:05Speaker 10: The team's gonna lose here at home? What's our record
- 1:13:08Speaker 10: here at home?
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: Suck that sucks?
- 1:13:13Speaker 10: Can record here and sucks at home?
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: And get out there.
- 1:13:17Speaker 10: Get rid of that man, a general manager. If you
- 1:13:20Speaker 10: watch that piece of you got there. The guy doesn't
- 1:13:24Speaker 10: know how to make a trade. You know you went
- 1:13:26Speaker 10: out there to get Peter on Onzo this year. Right,
- 1:13:30Speaker 10: You got fucking sheep on the bed. Uncle's going to
- 1:13:33Speaker 10: the game tonight, and nah, that's all I got to say.
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: So the guy's probably back on the rant again since
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: red Sock dropped four straight.
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: And they had just climbed up near the five hundred
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: mark at home. Before that, they were they were twelve
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: or thirteen under at home when that rent happened.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: Yeah, because Toronto's beating them in Boston.
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: So now now they're back to two under at home,
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: eleven over five hundred on the road.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a tough deal. Yeah.
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: And there it wasn't close ball games too.
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: I mean they won like what was that the game
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: of the year against the White Sox at twelve or
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: thirteen inning thriller last Thursday. And since then you mentioned
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: they've lost those four in a row, a four run game,
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: a one run game, a one run game, and a
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: two run game. So it was a bound to turn
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: at some point after the stretch they had.
- 1:14:20Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: In the second of those one run games was the
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: one with the goofy weird rule thing interpretation where there
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: was a guy that hit a line shot into the
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: glove of one of the Red Sox he excuse me,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: one of the Blue Jays, and a lot of people
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: thought it was a double play when he threw to second,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: but it wasn't. It was only one out recorded, so
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: there was only one out, and they had it wrong
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: on the scoreboard as well that there was only one out.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Then when it was two outs, a guy for the
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Blue Jays catches and when there was only one out
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: and the Red Sox were moving thinking there was two
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: outs in the play. So then the Blue Jays come
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: in and they're like, hey, we're going to have an
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: appeal play. But several of their own players were confused
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: about it. They left the field, and so the rule
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: was they lost the opportunity. Time expired for the Blue
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: Jays to have an appeal, because he said, they're players.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: Once you leave, you know, they always talk about, you know,
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: don't cross the lines. Once you cross the line in
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: the field of play. And at the Red Sox, the
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: Blue Jays had crossed the lines headed for the dugout,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: and John Schneider, their manager, said, I like him, tay
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: a look at that. There's no way, he said, you
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: ever seen Vlad Guerrero get off. There's no way. He
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: was back in the dugout by then. But you can't
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: cross that line. If you've ever seen the movie Field
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: of Dreams, you know you can't cross over the line.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: You become old again.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: That's what happened to the Moonlight Graham, right, you know, that's
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: what happened when Burt Lancaster was a young guy, and
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: then once he stepped across the line. He became doctor
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: Moonlight Graham, but he saved the life of Kevin Costner's
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: little girl. So anyway, so uh that that was weird
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: and that was all part of the Red Sox latest skit.
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: Craig, what is the weirdest rule discrepancy or oddity that
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: was it took place in a baseball game that that
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: you that you've called.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: I'm just trying to think about that. We've had.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: We've had some weird things in fact that we had
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: something like that happen this year as well.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: I know this.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: There's also been confusion this happened I think a couple
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: of times when Texas played Stanford. There's a lot of
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: confusion on that whole pitcher slash d h thing that
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: Shoe a Otani does when he plays for Los Angeles,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: and a lot of people are not.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: Familiar with the rule.
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: But the rule clearly, it's in the book and it
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: is stated that one player can be designated for two positions,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: but the only only way it can be designated is
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: that one of the designations has to be designated hitter. Well,
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: if you're already the first baseman, but you're only but
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: you're also listed as the designated hitter. Then the first
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: baseman camp bat, so the pitcher would have to bat,
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: So you surrender the DH anytime you pinch hit for
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: the DH. That's a that's a generalized rule. Everybody knows that.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: But the pitcher can be listed as the DH. And
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: the reason for that rule is to give and I'll
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: use show Aotani as an example. Let's say he starts
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: a game and he goes six innings, he's already hit
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: a home run in the ballgame as well in his
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: spot as the DH, but then they go to the
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: bullpen in the seventh, so he leaves the matter as
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: the pitcher, but remains in the game as the designated hitter.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: That's the only substitute where they can where they can
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: allow for that where the pitcher doesn't have to bat.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: So if you pinch hit for the DH, then when
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: that spot comes around again, the pitcher is going to
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: have to bat for himself.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: Sometimes you see the DH pinchip of, but it's usually.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: A late game like ninth inning, two out deal or
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: something like that, where the spot is not likely to
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: come back around unless it goes well in the extra innings.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: Happened two or three times with Texas games has past
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: year that whoever was dh was lifted for a pinch
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: hit or it was usually a right handed bat or
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: a left handed bat against a right hand or a
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: right handed bat. It's a situational substitution. But that's probably
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: about as bizarre as he gets. But I'll tell you this,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: where can we Keith Morland? If there's something that's kind
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: of obscure about the rule or about scoring and play,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: he'll know it. He'll know it for sure, all right,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: coming up back to the Cowboys. More from Brian Shott
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: and ever more from Dak Prescott as well, and we'll
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: the radio apps.
- 1:19:10Speaker 11: Just this is that other Donald Fagan offering.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: It's funny line right here. I'll tell you why it
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: is lots of beer.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: We've got provisions and lots of beer. The keyword is survival.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: In the New Frontier, this song the New Frontier takes place.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: It's on the album that the Nightfly album.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: I g Y. The song we play stands for International
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: Geophysical Year, which was nineteen fifty seven.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: I supposed to be looking forward to the future. This
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: song it's kind of retro because it's about when the
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Russians push the button and we have.
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: The war to end all wars, a nuclear war, which
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: was the all the red scar in the nuclear scares
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: of the late fifties and early sixties. This song is
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: about my dad's got an old underground dug out of bombshelter.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: We can go down there. He's using it as also
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: to hit on a young lady, an attractive blonde.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: He says, got a touch of Tuesday Weld, the actress.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: We can google her.
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: That priority is in a nuclear winter, and do you.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: Have a steady boyfriend? As everybody, he's talking to her
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: about all of this kind of stuff and he's got
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: this underground thing that he's going to do well. A
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: lot of creditive musicians on this.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: It looks like there were like twenty musicians involved in this.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely so he had and of course Deely Dan
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: had that as well, as you know when with Donald
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: Fagan in that group, he would they would have all
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: kinds a great session in studio musicians that worked with
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: them on their albums as well. But that was good
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: and you got a chance to see some of the video.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: I always remember that music video. I was in college
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: at the time. It always it was a really funky
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: video that mixed the live action with animation.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: And it was pretty cool on that.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Before we get to hearing more in the NFL or
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: something else I wanted to get to and it was
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: a piece, as we point out from time to time,
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: especially when it comes to college football, and with all
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: the different publications that I consult daily, the online stuff.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: First of all, the newspapers Austin American Statesman, Dallas Morning News,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Washington Post, New York Times, read those things.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: I also look at.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: All of the sports things online, the Athletic Sports Illustrated,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: ESPN dot com. There's several different ones that'd be for
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: a variety of topics to discuss on the program.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: There was a piece.
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: On the ESPN dot com today written by Dave Wilson
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: about college football, and it was specifically about quarterbacks getting
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: big Swoll cut all of those things. In fact, the
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: headline is swole swli swoll ballgame? Should quarterbacks be jacked?
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: In the ESPN investigation And he starts off from a
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: conversation he had with Cooper Manning, Arch's dad brother middle
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: brother of Peyton and Eli and he said Cooper Manning
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: has unique insight into the mind and psyche of quarterbacks.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: He's the son of a legend Archie, brother of two superstars,
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: Peyton and Eli, and he's the father of Arch the
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: Texas Longhorn starter, a wide receiver by trade. Cooper has
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: dealt with these guys his entire life, and every summer
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: at the Passing Academy at Thibodeau, Louisiana, he acts as
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: the MC, offering live play by play during the College
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: QB Skills competition on Friday Night, bestowing some nicknames and
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: checking some egos. This year, nobody drew more attention at
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: the Manning camp than Oklahoma quarterback John Matteir. Most weren't
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: focused on the hand injury from last season, which caused
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: him to miss a few weeks, nor were they talking
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: about his throwing motion, which he says he worked on
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: this offseason. Instead, the chatter was about his physique. Matier's
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: listed at six one, two hundred and twenty four pounds
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: in the Oklahoma bio, but they said he was jacked.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: He was yoked an image of Mateir in a sleeveless
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: shirt and wrap around shades at night. No less under
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: the watchful eye of Peyton Manning caused the eyeball emojis
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: to pop up across social media. Cooper said, my boy
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: Matier had cut off the sleeves before we got the
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: shirts out of the box. Mattier was so ripped that
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: some believed the picture was digitally in hints by AI.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: So that's a sad sign of the times. But it's
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: also a sign of how unusual it is to see
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: a quarterback who looks like a linebacker. So the Sooners
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: responded with a video Materr hitting the smelling sauce salts
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: and front squatting.
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: Not a I.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: The poster red, he's holding some smelling salts in his hands.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: He's right there at the deal. So anyway, this goes on.
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: Former Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman of the Saints said Materi
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: was on a legendary shirtless run. Trinidad chaandlists, the old
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: miss quarterback replied the Materi needed to chill all of
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. So there's guys that were big,
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: and it was that Colin Kleine, the new Kansas state
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: head coach. He was tough to bring down. He was
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: six two hundred and twenty five when he was a quarterback,
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: finished third in the Heisman voting in twenty twelve. He
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: said he was a meadhead who loved the weight room,
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: and now he wishes he knew more about physiology than
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: he did when he was playing. Can you be too
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: swoll Cleine said yes, one percent. I was muscle bound.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: Everybody's body's different. Though Tiba wasn't muscle bound, he was
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: a flexible athlete. Klein said there's so much more to
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: learn about biomechanics now than he was aware of. And
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: he said, I got the bench record for quarterbacks. It's
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: three ninety five still up there. We might put lights
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: on that. So anyway, so Matears said, I'm aware and
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: I know how I can feel when I'm about to
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: get tight. I have to stretch my lat and my
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: terrace major and my infras spinatus. I think every day,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: So he said, it's just the nature of the way
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: I throw and what I use when I throw. So anyway,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: West Virginia coach Ridge Rodriguez said it's important for his
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: got to be in shape and to be able to
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: withstand up beating over a season. He said, I want
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: him to be a skinny little guy, but hold on
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: a second. Rodriguez then remembers one of the all time
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: legends who came up under his watch, Pat White, the
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: one who said ncaa record for rushing yards by a
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: quarterback with forty four and eighty with forty seven rushing touchdowns.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: He said White could not get over one hundred and
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: eighty pounds. I was like, at some point, Pat, in
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: your career, you're going to at least get to two hundred.
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: He never did, but he never got slow either, so
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: I don't know so.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: Brady Quinn, who was on the Dan Patrick Show back
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: several years ago, said in twenty thirteen, John Gruden told
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: him during pre draft meetings he was too jacked to
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: play quarterback and he didn't want a shredded quarterback. Eric Morris,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: who had been at North Texas, who had been incarnate
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: word now at Oklahoma State, those MATERI very well.
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: He was.
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: He identified matier quarterback at Little Elm when he was
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: Washington States offensive coordinator, and of course Morris found cam
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: Ward as a zero star recruit, helped Chandler Morris revive
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: his career in North Texas and now has drew messimaker,
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: and he said, I've definitely been around quarterbacks. They get
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: too big in the chest and shoulder areas, and it
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: changes their mechanics and makes them tight. We want elongated muscles.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: But he said that doesn't necessarily apply to a tear
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: who has the flexibility and the ability to throw from
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: a variety of angles. Partially from his history as a
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: baseball player, he has said his physique fits the way
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: he plays. So it's something to keep an eye on
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: this year when you're watching. You see now he said, Man,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: that quarterback is huge, or he's cut, he's ripped. You know, nobody,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: nobody disputes the late Jared Lorenz. And you know there's
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: a big old quarterback when he played at Kentucky a
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: huge dude as well, but he weighed off a lot.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: He was like two hundred and eighty pounds at one points.
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: At how big was Vince Young when he's playing in Texas?
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: Vince was six five and two fifty when he played, Well,
- 1:27:48Speaker 4: that's a big frame. That can big frame, taller didn't
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: affect his speed.
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: It was good. It fit him well. He did very
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: well with them. Anyway.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: I thought it was a pretty interesting article there and
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: it goes in a lot greater to tail. But those
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: were just a couple of highlights that all right up
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: next we will bring you that cowboy sound and we
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: continue on thirteen hundred zone.
- 1:28:09Speaker 12: And all that you mister, I want to spread news
- 1:28:20Speaker 12: that if the build is good getting used boy, you
- 1:28:24Speaker 12: just keep on you letting me.
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: Do you use me?
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: Uh, the late great Bill Withers. I like just about
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: all of this stuff that he did. This This is
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: actually one of my favorites. Use me from my early seventies.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: There also fits into the yacht rock genre hitting happens
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: early seventies stuff will go in there.
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not sure there's been a Wednesday that I've
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: filled in for you here on the show without using
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: Bill Withers on yacht Rocket.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: At some point, right yeah, list so because he fits
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: certainly his style was great on that more fun the
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys. And let me do this too before I
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: don't want the time to get completely the way. We
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: do have to give away one more copy of Dave
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: We're gonna do this right now with the.
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: Let's go with number twelve, Number twelve, the twelfth person.
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: Now dirty doesn't. It's a clean doesn't.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: Twelfth person to reach us via the talkback feature on
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. Download that iHeartRadio app if you haven't
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: already done. It really easy to do and it is free.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: And then you search AM thirteen under the zone. It'll
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: pop right up.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: Press that red button with a white microphone and just
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: say the words I want the magazine and leave your name.
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: If you're the twelfth person in the queue, in the
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: line to do that, you win a copy of the magazine.
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: Brian Schottennheimber, the Cowboys head coach, was happy, as you
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: might imagine on Monday when they found out that Quentin
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: Williams got that new one hundred and five point nine
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: million dollar deal done the extension. So it was asked,
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: did you bring up the contract of the team.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: Yeah, we just.
- 1:30:25Speaker 7: Celebrate when when guys do cool things, Todd, we celebrate,
- 1:30:28Speaker 7: you know, whether it's having a baby, whether it's getting engaged,
- 1:30:31Speaker 7: whether it's a new contract. Why not the money, The
- 1:30:34Speaker 7: money doesn't matter. It's about being part of our team.
- 1:30:36Speaker 7: He's part of our family for a long time to
- 1:30:37Speaker 7: come and very very well deserved. And you know, I
- 1:30:41Speaker 7: think there'd be more contracts to come.
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: Okay, all right, Yeah, setting happy about that. Todd.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: By the ways, Todd Archer is one of the guys
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: that covers the Cowboys there. This was a thing, or
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: at least it came up when practice ended yesterday. And
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: again it's a joint practice between the Cowboys and the Rams.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: When practice ended, you saw the Cowboys running some sprints afterwards,
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: up and down, and it was not at the behest
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: of the coaches. The players decided to do it, and
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: supposedly some of the Rams players were heard to say.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: Y'all doing that stuff.
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: We ain't for that, running over sprints after practice like that,
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: but they did choose to do it. It was a
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: player led thing, and so shot he was asked about
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: the players doing a little extra conditioning after practice.
- 1:31:30Speaker 7: That was not my decision. That was led by the players.
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:31:33Speaker 7: I was over there saying goodbye to a few of
- 1:31:34Speaker 7: the coaches and the guys that I have relationships with,
- 1:31:37Speaker 7: and I was alerted by our strength staff if the
- 1:31:40Speaker 7: guys wanted to run twenties, and I think it shows
- 1:31:42Speaker 7: you that they bought into the fact that conditioning is
- 1:31:44Speaker 7: going to make a difference for this football team in
- 1:31:45Speaker 7: the twenty twenty sixth season.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: He was also asked about the joint practice, the benefits
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: that come from it, and that goes into the whole
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: thing about what it takes to compete against top caliber
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: teams in the league.
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: I think so.
- 1:31:58Speaker 7: I think that's what we're all finding out this year.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: We're doing too.
- 1:32:01Speaker 7: You know, we're gonna do this one and then a
- 1:32:03Speaker 7: week from now we're gonna play against the Saints, and
- 1:32:07Speaker 7: you know, you get great work. You know this, This
- 1:32:09Speaker 7: relationship with Sean is really easy. Uh, he and his
- 1:32:13Speaker 7: coordinators and operationally is awesome. It was our time to
- 1:32:16Speaker 7: come here to be with them. I actually wanted the heat.
- 1:32:19Speaker 7: I never wear shorts. Actually, a couple of our guys said,
- 1:32:21Speaker 7: shot of you.
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:32:21Speaker 7: I said, yeah, why, I said, you got shorts on.
- 1:32:24Speaker 7: I never really show off my legs. I got good
- 1:32:25Speaker 7: legs too, but yeah, I never show them off. But
- 1:32:28Speaker 7: it was it was hot, and we need that getting
- 1:32:30Speaker 7: ready to go back to Texas here in.
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: A couple of weeks. I got good legs, but I'm
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: not showing them off. He was also asked about how
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: his offensive line did against that really impressive Rams defensive front. Yeah, again,
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: really good front.
- 1:32:46Speaker 7: It was nice to see Miles Garrett on the side.
- 1:32:48Speaker 7: That's a good thing for us. We had a plan
- 1:32:50Speaker 7: for him in case he went such an elite player,
- 1:32:52Speaker 7: but I thought Young was terrific. And you know, they
- 1:32:54Speaker 7: always challenge us. But we need that work because what
- 1:32:57Speaker 7: I think is so important is our guys get a
- 1:32:59Speaker 7: feel for the matchup that they're used to going with
- 1:33:02Speaker 7: in practice against their teammate, whether it's for Shaun Gary
- 1:33:05Speaker 7: as a Roku Malachai Lawrence, whoever it is. It's good
- 1:33:08Speaker 7: to see guys that have different pass rush moves, encounters.
- 1:33:11Speaker 7: So I think that work is priceless for both sides.
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: By the way, Sean McVay said some very similar things.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: He thought it was good for his defense to work
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: against a really good offensive line. He brought that up
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: as well from the Rams side of thing. And the
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: Rams are expected, obviously to be a deep playoff contender.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: I think I saw this morning, maybe it was Lewis Riddick,
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: the two best teams in the NFL right now, he said,
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: are in the same division, the defending Super Bowl champions
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: Seahawks and the Rams. And he said, I'll keep the
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: Seahawks ahead of them right now. They've earned that and
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: they did good in the offseason. Rams did pretty good
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: in the offseason too.
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: I'm confused, Craig. I didn't think Washington was in that division.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: Unfortunately they're not. They're not. Maybe they can contend in
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: the NFC East.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Dak Prescott asked about being out there and being pumped
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: even when Miles Garrett wasn't out there was he was.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: He pumped up not to see Garrett on the other side, it.
- 1:34:09Speaker 8: Was on the field. He was definitely on the field.
- 1:34:12Speaker 8: I mean, Miles is a hell of a player. You know,
- 1:34:14Speaker 8: we'll see him when we see him. Obviously, we had
- 1:34:16Speaker 8: some protections in here, as we do any elite rusher
- 1:34:19Speaker 8: to do, you know, to go to him and then
- 1:34:20Speaker 8: when you hear he's not in there, you just kind
- 1:34:22Speaker 8: of take that out.
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: And so yeah, I mean, I.
- 1:34:24Speaker 8: Know Miles was looking forward just to the season, so
- 1:34:27Speaker 8: it's no big deal that he's not playing no practice.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: Yeah, he said, we'll seem when we see they are
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: on the schedule the Cowboys will play at so far,
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: I think it's in December when they play the Rams.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Off of that, this thing about the players running after practice,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: and then it was the player's idea why.
- 1:34:44Speaker 8: Well, yeah, I mean conditions something that he put on
- 1:34:46Speaker 8: us at the beginning of the year, you know, said
- 1:34:48Speaker 8: the why while we're gonna do it, we want to
- 1:34:49Speaker 8: be the best conditioned team, then the most conditioned team.
- 1:34:51Speaker 8: Then guys are taking pride in it. And you know,
- 1:34:54Speaker 8: it was a simple demo. Came up to me and
- 1:34:55Speaker 8: asked me, you know, the coach said, it's on us.
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: Do you want to run?
- 1:34:57Speaker 8: I'm like, yeah, if y'all want to run out and
- 1:34:59Speaker 8: you know, see y'all field and what it was doing.
- 1:35:00Speaker 8: But I know we've got it on us over here,
- 1:35:02Speaker 8: and so yeah, it was just like a normal practice
- 1:35:04Speaker 8: that's going and get our runs in and get better.
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, it's impressive for them to go ahead and
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: get out there and do some running. And then finally
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: more on this Quinn Williams contract, because it was going
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: on for a while and there was a lot of conversation.
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: About it for a while about you know, you know,
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: was it going to get done.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: And I did find it interesting that Brian Schottknebber did
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: say say when we had the sound from him a
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: moment ago a few moments ago when he said there's
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: going to be more getting done. So that's you know,
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: that's the optimistic view of the way they're taking it.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: But the mere fact that the Quinn Williams deal is
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: now done, completely done now brings up the point about
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: the impact that it might have on this football team
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: that it was done before the season began, and Dak
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: Prescott was asked about what kind of impact might that
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: have going into the season for the Cowboys.
- 1:36:04Speaker 8: Super blessed, super thankful, hell of a teammate, one of
- 1:36:06Speaker 8: the best I've been around, obviously between the lines, when
- 1:36:10Speaker 8: you watch him on the field, just what he's able
- 1:36:11Speaker 8: to do. You know, we're always talking about the halo
- 1:36:14Speaker 8: rule and the guy just is always in the halo.
- 1:36:15Speaker 8: And I don't think he can help it. He just,
- 1:36:17Speaker 8: you know, he just gets there and he gets there
- 1:36:18Speaker 8: so fast. That's what he knows is getting to the quarterback.
- 1:36:20Speaker 8: So it makes practice fun. But at the same time,
- 1:36:23Speaker 8: he's exactly the leader that you want, exactly the leader
- 1:36:25Speaker 8: that you know when he speaks, it's heard, but he
- 1:36:27Speaker 8: doesn't even have to say anything, and he's leading every
- 1:36:29Speaker 8: moment that he steps into the building. By the way,
- 1:36:31Speaker 8: that he carries himself and just being a pros pro,
- 1:36:33Speaker 8: and so to get him locked in for excuse me,
- 1:36:36Speaker 8: for an extended time is everything that's been since a
- 1:36:39Speaker 8: message only the team, but the young guys and people
- 1:36:41Speaker 8: you know, wanting to stay here.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: So super happy about that. Okay, all right?
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: So yeah, with the contract being done for Quinn Williams,
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: the Cowboys play Saturday night their preseason opener in Seattle
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: against the defending Super Bowl champions. Will take on the
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: Seahawks on Saturday night, and then they'll play another road
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: preseason game the following Saturday in Glendale, will take on
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: the Arizona Cardinals. And then you heard Brian shot Namber
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: talking about the Saints and they'll have some shared practice,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: and then they'll conclude the preseason on Friday, the twenty eighth,
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: when they host the New Orleans Saints, the only preseason
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: game that will be going on at Jerry World. And
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: then they open their season with back to back Division
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: games at the Giants on a Sunday night and then
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: at home against the Washington Commanders three twenty five pm kickoff.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: Any thoughts about you zipping up by thirty five to
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: catch your team the commanders in action against the Cowboys.
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: I would love to.
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: I think, you know, there have been too many visiting
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: fans in Northwest Stadium in DC my entire life, So
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: I might as well put the shoe on the other
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: foot one of these times, and that might be my
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: only chance to catch them this year.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Well, those are two division games, and then the next
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: two games really kind of intrigued me. They play Baltimore
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: at home on Sunday afternoon the third week, and the
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: fourth week.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: They play at the Texans. And in addition to just being.
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: More than whatever governor's rivalry, whatever you want to call it,
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: that sort of thing, just a mere fact to see
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: how the Cowboy offense executes against that Texans defense and
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: vice versa, the Cowboys can be able to contain the
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: Texans offense as well.
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: All Right, we'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: of the program. I'm thirteen under the Zone.
