- 0:43So if you want to smell like a great Yankee Candle, definitely
- 0:45check him out. He's got great stuff.
- 0:47I have an extremely special guest with me here that it's the
- 0:50first time being on my show with me.
- 0:53And he's actually the first person I've really told here in
- 0:56Indiana that I do this show. Devin Phillips, he, believe it
- 1:01or not, was my world history teacher back in my freshman year
- 1:04of high school, which to to date, both of us was right after
- 1:10the Colts just lost a Super Bowl.
- 1:13So it has been a minute since he and I have talked football, but
- 1:16he and I are both excited that he's here.
- 1:19And I appreciate you for coming home, man.
- 1:21Thanks so much for having me, man.
- 1:22I'm really excited to be here and I always enjoyed talking
- 1:25football with you. I'm, I'm sorry that you just
- 1:27dated us 'cause that just means I'm that much older than you
- 1:30are. But I, I, it's super cool that
- 1:35you invited me on and anytime, anytime I can be out there and,
- 1:41and especially talk anything Hoosiers or you know, Hoosier
- 1:44esque, I'm definitely down. So I appreciate the invite.
- 1:48Yeah, absolutely. And I know because you so a
- 1:51little bit of a background. So Devin is from here in
- 1:55Indiana. He taught here in Indiana.
- 1:56Now he is he has a job out in California with a beautiful
- 2:00daughter, if I remember correctly.
- 2:03Still a die hard Colts fan. Still a lot of ties here to
- 2:06Indiana. Still a lot of friends and
- 2:07family here in Indiana too. I know we wanted to give a shout
- 2:11out to a buddy's company that he helps endorse this too that is
- 2:15also here in Hoosier land. Yes, so my best friend from high
- 2:20school, he was the best man in my wedding.
- 2:23His name is Kyle Champ. He owns Portland Insurance.
- 2:27I'm originally from Jay County, Indiana and Portland is our our
- 2:31capital. It's where I go visit when I'm
- 2:33back in Indiana or one of the three places that I spend some
- 2:36time in. And just wanted to give a shout
- 2:38out to to Portland Insurance. If you're looking for insurance,
- 2:41I know a guy called Kyle Champ and tell him that Devin sent
- 2:44you. Awesome, awesome.
- 2:46Definitely check that out. So man, let's get into it
- 2:48because we're here to talk one of the most fun times of the
- 2:51year. We're here to talk the NFL and I
- 2:55know we were talking about it before we got started.
- 2:57The best part about the NFL, all the drama, all the stories and
- 3:00then everything that unfolds as we're just two games into the
- 3:04season. We've got season ending
- 3:06injuries. We've got so many changes on
- 3:08stuff. So with all that being said, I
- 3:11said we just dive right into a man as far as far as so we'll
- 3:16we'll dive in with kind of the first one we'll dive in with
- 3:18last Thursday Night Football's game with the Lions going to the
- 3:21Bills. Bills get their first win in
- 3:24their brand new stadium. As it looks right now, I know
- 3:27it's only two games in the season.
- 3:29The Bills look like the the big contenders in the AFC, but they
- 3:33usually do whatever Josh Allen gets a premier wide receiver
- 3:36like he has a DJ more right now. What was your thoughts behind
- 3:39this? Is this the Bills kind of taking
- 3:41a step forward or do you think this is the Lions continuing to
- 3:43take a step back as they've lost Ben Johnson, as they've lost
- 3:46Aaron Glenn for the last couple of years?
- 3:49Yeah, I think that I think the storyline here is a lot more the
- 3:51Lions taking a step back. While I do think the Bills are
- 3:55are the dudes on the block that everybody needs to be keeping
- 3:58their eyes on to know what what's gonna be happening.
- 4:01I think the Lions have taken a big step back.
- 4:03And I do think it's scheme wise, right?
- 4:05Like they were just out coaching people regularly.
- 4:08And while I love their head coach, I mean, I love the grit
- 4:12and the biting off kneecaps and all the stuff that he sent into
- 4:15the football verse. His his, you know, his
- 4:20coordinators were a big part of that.
- 4:22And they had that same fight. They had that same grit and they
- 4:25were very opportunistic on defense with Aaron Glenn.
- 4:28I mean that, you know, that guy was a great NFL player.
- 4:31He clearly knows defenses. He's now, maybe I'm not willing
- 4:35to commit to this, but maybe translating that into as a head
- 4:38coach, I mean, The Jets pulled off some things I was not
- 4:40prepared for, but Aaron Glenn's a dude.
- 4:45And then I think anybody who understands, you know,
- 4:49coordinating on offense, Ben Johnson is the standard for that
- 4:53right now. And you strip that away from any
- 4:56team and they're going to regress.
- 4:58The problem I see with the Lions is they haven't figured out how
- 5:02to slow that regression and possibly even turn it around.
- 5:05And I think this was another example of it.
- 5:07So that's, I definitely think that's the storyline.
- 5:10Yeah, I think, I think part of it's a culmination and a lot of
- 5:13people have pointed it out. Whenever everything is going
- 5:15right, as far as you know, everybody's clicking,
- 5:17everybody's doing what they're supposed to do.
- 5:19And Jared Goff is a heck of a quarterback.
- 5:21But it seems like when he has to improvise, if the team starts to
- 5:24struggle, if like Amin Ross St. Brown isn't getting open, if Sam
- 5:28LaPorte isn't getting open, there's a struggle.
- 5:30And then I'll be honest, aside from Aiden Hutchinson and aside
- 5:34from like Jack Campbell as well as their safety, I'm trying to
- 5:38remember his name. Oh, branch, Branch.
- 5:42There's a whole lot of kind of no names on that defense.
- 5:44And, and I feel like the defense, like the offense is
- 5:48still kind of able to keep, keep the head afloat.
- 5:51But that defense, like you mentioned, as far as a lot of
- 5:53regression and, and part of that is due to a lot of injuries.
- 5:56So I feel like they're definitely one of the more
- 5:58injury Riddle teams. Even when Ben Johnson and Aaron
- 6:01Glenn were both their injuries were a big issue and kind of
- 6:04continue to stay that way. But I feel like the defense is
- 6:07really what's harming them. On the flip side, though, we've
- 6:09got the Bills like Joe Brady and Josh Allen, you know, that that
- 6:13connection continues. They were lucky enough to keep
- 6:15that chemistry. I do kind of worry a little bit
- 6:17about the Bills defense though, as a result of that.
- 6:20I mean, the Texans were able to put 31 up on them.
- 6:22The Lions were able to put 31 up on them.
- 6:24Now, credit to both the Lions and the Texans because, you
- 6:27know, even in the last couple of years, and obviously the Texans
- 6:30are over 2 to start the year, they're still a good football
- 6:33team and to put 31 points up is still a pretty impressive feat.
- 6:36Do you feel like that's the one thing the Bills might have to
- 6:39worry about is their defense might be the Achilles heel for
- 6:42them? Yeah, Tony the great set up,
- 6:45brother. Absolutely.
- 6:48There's no question with that. The the Bills defense is
- 6:51definitely still a question mark.
- 6:53Their offense is going to go out and score probably 32 plus every
- 6:57week, but their defense giving up 31 points to a Texans team
- 7:03that just turned around and only scored 6 this week, I think
- 7:06really speaks a glaring issue that exists there.
- 7:10And here's the thing about Jared Allen getting him in a shootout.
- 7:14He's going to play his best football, right?
- 7:16But he hasn't won a lot of those games.
- 7:18He's been a superstar in it. He hasn't won a lot of games.
- 7:21So you got to fix those problems.
- 7:23And, and I do think that that is is how teams will beat the
- 7:26Bills. They will just outshoot them on
- 7:29a given weekend because the defense is is the is the
- 7:32problem. Absolutely.
- 7:34It is funny. I did see a meme, the NFL memes
- 7:36posted of the clip from Full Metal Jacket where Gomer Pyle
- 7:39was just kind of zoning out and said Josh Allen when he realizes
- 7:42last year was the year that he had to try to win it all because
- 7:45the Chiefs were regressing. And now it seems like the Chiefs
- 7:48are back at the current moment. But we'll we'll get into that
- 7:50here in a little bit. Nonetheless though, another team
- 7:54that I thought was kind of interesting just because they're
- 7:57quarterback gets a lot of hate. And even though I'm not a
- 7:59Cowboys fan anymore, I. I can't remember.
- 8:03A cow would die hard. I'm gonna say I I've I've left
- 8:07said toxic relationship at the moment, at least sometimes.
- 8:10You have to do that. You do I I'm very critical of
- 8:14Philly still. Nonetheless they go into
- 8:16Nashville. It was apparently like 150° on
- 8:19the field there in Nashville Sunday.
- 8:21It was super hot. The Eagles squeak out a win
- 8:25against a Titans team. Now I know they've gotten
- 8:27better. They have Robert Salas the
- 8:29coach. They have Brian Dabal as the
- 8:31offensive coordinator, albeit that's, you know, with what he
- 8:34did with The Jets. That's not exactly a precedent.
- 8:36But as a coordinator, Brian Dabal did good.
- 8:39He's got a number one overall pick in Cam Ward.
- 8:41He's got Cardinal Tate at wide receiver.
- 8:43There's building blocks there, but we don't expect anything
- 8:47crazy from Tennessee. Do you think this is one of
- 8:50those? You look at the Eagles and
- 8:51you're like, why are you playing down to an opponent like the
- 8:55Titans when you still have guys like Hertz, You still have
- 8:58Barkley, you still have Devante Smith, and albeit they're
- 9:01starting to do with some injuries, their offensive line
- 9:03is getting older. They still have Victoria Fangio
- 9:06on the defense, though. But you're playing down to an
- 9:08opponent like the Titans. Do you think this is something
- 9:11you look at the Eagles and like they're they're still a
- 9:13formidable team, but they're not the big, bad, scary team that we
- 9:17probably once looked at the mat the last couple of years?
- 9:20Yeah, they're definitely not the big bad scary.
- 9:22But I, you know, I, I, I tend to think the storyline is here,
- 9:27that the Eagles always find a way to play down or up to who
- 9:30they play. Very rarely do they get blown
- 9:33out or blow somebody out. You know, like now the, the year
- 9:37they went on that run and won the Super Bowl, they were
- 9:39blowing people out. But Saquon Barkley was out of
- 9:43his mind in some of his plays during.
- 9:45I mean, there were things happening that were, you know,
- 9:48different than what had happened before.
- 9:51So, you know, for me, the, the Eagles might not be the big bad,
- 9:56but they're the guy. They're the they're still the
- 9:58guy that when they enter the room, you get up and let them
- 10:00sit down because they they've earned that respect and you
- 10:04you're looking at them accordingly to me.
- 10:09You know, first of all, I don't think Robert Saul is a good head
- 10:11coach and I didn't think Brian Dabel was a good head coach.
- 10:14And you know, he comes from a Lion tree line of coaching that
- 10:18may be the best ever, but I still don't like it.
- 10:21And so, you know, I don't give them the respect that maybe
- 10:24they're due. So for me and and I'm a die hard
- 10:27Colts fan, as you mentioned before.
- 10:29So, you know, I want to keep the Titans with everything down as
- 10:33we possibly can. So that's going to be my
- 10:35narrative. And so to and so to me, like,
- 10:38you know, the Eagles played down to them.
- 10:40They allowed them to stick around.
- 10:42And then when Jalen needed to turn it on at the end, he did.
- 10:45I there's actually a clip of him talking to Justin, I think
- 10:50Simmons, who came up to him to talk at the end of the game and
- 10:52he said, like, you started this, I had to end that shit.
- 10:55You know, like, I mean, that's who Jalen Hurts is, right?
- 10:58Like, and the, the question kind of that you led with is like,
- 11:03why? Why aren't they that every week?
- 11:05And that, to me, tends to be a coaching problem.
- 11:08Yeah, and I, I don't disagree and I think I do agree.
- 11:11Like when you look at Robert Saleh and Brian Dewall both as
- 11:14head coaches, it's kind of ironic.
- 11:15They both get the New York jobs and they both are just
- 11:19absolutely off. I feel like at this point with
- 11:21the exception of having Eli Manning near New York is just
- 11:24cursed as far as those two teams go.
- 11:26If you if you want to include the Bills just because name wise
- 11:30they're they're they're associated with them.
- 11:32I I have fear that soft Gardner brought it to Indianapolis that
- 11:35that's honest. That that that was going to be
- 11:38my question when we get to that, believe me, because I think the
- 11:41record is like one and seven since acquired name and I'm like
- 11:44that's crazy for what they spent.
- 11:48We'll move on to the next game though, one that and obviously
- 11:51again, being having been a Cowboys fan, this team has ended
- 11:55playoff dreams and any type of positive hopes for many years,
- 11:59whether it's Aaron Rodgers or Jordan Love.
- 12:02The Packers go to New York to face Geno Smith and The Jets
- 12:05with Aaron Glenn and they just barely escape a win.
- 12:09I mean, again, it it's two weeks into the season, there's some
- 12:12injuries happening. There's a lot of rust and having
- 12:14to get used to new system, new guys, you know, coming in, new
- 12:17guys leaving. This is 1 though.
- 12:19I feel like the Packers were one of those teams.
- 12:22When you look at the NFC North, you could honestly make an
- 12:25argument for any one of those teams being able to win the
- 12:27division. And I feel like this is almost
- 12:30another one of those instances. Just like Philly, the Packers
- 12:33are playing down to their opponents.
- 12:35But it's ironic because when they faced Minnesota, they were
- 12:38up and it's kind of like they got cocky.
- 12:40OK, we knocked Kyler out. Now Carson Wentz comes in.
- 12:43He's kind of hit and miss. Now he's more of that journey in
- 12:45the backup quarterback. But at one point he was a
- 12:48perennial starter that was pretty damn good in all honesty,
- 12:51even though his tenure with the Colts didn't end positively,
- 12:54statistically, he's great. I mean, he 27 touchdowns and
- 12:58seven picks with just the one year he was with them.
- 13:01Do you think it's almost time for kind of a panic with the
- 13:04Packers because they've paid Jordan Love top dollar and a ton
- 13:07of money? The wide receiver room, you
- 13:09know, on paper it's great. I mean, they've got Marcus
- 13:12Golden, they've got Watson, they've got Reid, although Reid
- 13:16ended up getting hurt. Like they've got the talent.
- 13:18They can draft really well, but it just seems like now Lafleur
- 13:21and that Packers team just can't make it all click together.
- 13:26Well, I tend to think that they're not a first half team
- 13:29and that probably is coaching. That probably is a little four
- 13:32thing. But you know, they they seem to
- 13:36get hot down the stretch when you want them to get hot.
- 13:40And so to me, this isn't them playing down.
- 13:43This is them figuring out their system and how they're going to
- 13:46work through it. This is similar to what I think
- 13:48the Colts are going through. The difference is the the
- 13:51Packers are still finding a way because they've I think that
- 13:54unit has been together and understands some processes a
- 13:57little bit better. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 14:00And on the other side, I mean, I know it's it's kind of
- 14:02self-explanatory, but but The Jets, do you, do you think there
- 14:06is an upside for The Jets? I mean, Gino, Gino kind of makes
- 14:10his return it seems like because he's got to go on this NFL
- 14:13journey. He's learned a lot.
- 14:14It seems like he's probably more comfortable being in The Jets
- 14:17now. They still have Garrett Wilson,
- 14:19they're still positive pieces there.
- 14:21And obviously they have a ton of draft capital going into the
- 14:24next couple of years. So they could really build
- 14:26themselves up to be a team that's formidable in the future.
- 14:30But I I do have to ask because we, we have to joke about it.
- 14:34Do you think they do the most Jets thing possible when just
- 14:38enough they like knock themselves of not only being
- 14:40able to get a potential top quarterback in next year's draft
- 14:44and potentially hurt themselves out of getting a top weapon or a
- 14:48top offensive or defensive piece to complement with him?
- 14:51Because I feel like that'd be the most Jeff's thing to do.
- 14:53If they want that quarterback, they got to give up those two
- 14:55picks to go getting when they could have just lost and they
- 14:58could have the best of both worlds.
- 15:00Yeah, I do think this is, I do think this is a team that's
- 15:03gonna be picking around 1516 this year.
- 15:06I do think they're gonna be a 7 and 8:50 and, you know, 8 range.
- 15:13But they also got the Colts pick and unless the Colts turn some
- 15:17things around, they might be drafting first anyway.
- 15:20So, you know, I think it's funny that you say this like I do
- 15:25think there is possibility in this.
- 15:26It's not something I'd spend any time thinking about, but I The
- 15:31Jets always find a way. But if that curse is somehow
- 15:34left and I do legitimately that I've spent time thinking about
- 15:38the possibility that this has happened.
- 15:40If that has happened, then probably what's going to happen
- 15:44is they're going to end up being a dog for the next 5 or 10 years
- 15:47as they bring some people in. But you know, that's a wait and
- 15:53see game. I've never been a Geno guy, but
- 15:56Geno has figured out over his career how to win games and
- 16:00that's gonna come in handy this year.
- 16:02Absolutely. And I, I think a lot of that's
- 16:03due, I think a lot of that was his time in Seattle.
- 16:06I mean, getting, getting an opportunity, obviously he went
- 16:09to the Giants, he's been with The Jets.
- 16:11I think he was with the Chargers even at one point, like he's
- 16:14been around the league. But I think being in Seattle,
- 16:17even though it was at the tail end of Russ's time and then him
- 16:20kind of feeling as a starter, I think gave him just enough of a
- 16:22positive and successful foundation to really build off
- 16:26of. Now, obviously the Raiders time,
- 16:28not as positive, but I mean, it's it's the Raiders and we'll
- 16:31we'll get into them too here in a little bit.
- 16:33The Raiders, the other one that was probably the biggest
- 16:37surprise. And I hope you appreciate the
- 16:39the straight face. So it's funny you said that.
- 16:44I was like when I was looking at it, I was like, oh, it's right
- 16:46there. I got to, I got to take the
- 16:48chance. It's right there.
- 16:50He would have. He would have taken that chance
- 16:52again. Absolutely so.
- 16:54And if for anybody who's watching and you're listening, I
- 16:58have on here the Browns and the Buccaneers.
- 17:00Watson gets his happy ending finish in Tampa Bay due to a
- 17:03weird weathered storm. Baker Mayfield's possibility of
- 17:07spoiling against his old team that that let him go get spoiled
- 17:13in in a pretty major win for the Browns there.
- 17:17There's so much we could talk about with the Browns.
- 17:19I mean, we could probably make a whole hour episode with them as
- 17:22far as the whole quarterback controversy, who should start,
- 17:25who shouldn't, all of that. I really want to focus, though,
- 17:29on Tampa Bay because I mean, this is a team.
- 17:31Yes, they lost Mike Evans in free agency in San Francisco,
- 17:35but you still have Chris Godwin, you have a Mecca Buca Baker is
- 17:38still solid, the offensive line is good, and they finally paid
- 17:43Vita Vea in order to get him and to keep him there.
- 17:45And of course, they draft a Ruben Bane.
- 17:47Who, if anybody, watched Miami last year, he was a solid
- 17:50defensive player, But they start the year O and two, they got
- 17:53beat pretty bad by Cincinnati and now they lose, you know,
- 17:56back back-to-back against the Browns.
- 17:59Do you think it's almost panic time for Tampa Bay?
- 18:02Because I feel like Todd Bowles has been one of those coaches.
- 18:04He's been on the hot seat for, I would say a couple of years now,
- 18:08even though he's won the division and like, they've
- 18:11really been the only relevant team in the NFC South for the
- 18:14last couple of years. They're still like, yeah, no,
- 18:17we, we might have to get rid of it.
- 18:20Yeah, I as a, as a human being, I really like Todd Bowles as a
- 18:25head coach. He's really terrible.
- 18:29It is my opinion on that. Yeah, he did get in.
- 18:32You know, he did win the division, but if I remember
- 18:34correctly, he won it with a losing record.
- 18:36Weren't they like 8:00 and 9:00? So like that's, you know, I'm,
- 18:40I'm not calling my mom to tell her that I went 8:00 and 9:00,
- 18:44you know, like that. So nothing to show shout about.
- 18:47So yeah, I just, I, I don't, you know, I also am not a big Baker
- 18:52guy. I, I love his commercials.
- 18:54I love, you know, he's come forward a lot about his
- 18:58Christianity. Big fan of of who he's become,
- 19:03but he's not a guy who I'm gonna hang my hat on for a franchise.
- 19:06And I know that that was what everybody was talking about when
- 19:08he had his big season there. But you know, I learned a
- 19:13lesson. You spoke about my daughter
- 19:15earlier. My daughter's 14 years old now
- 19:18and she's been a, I've been a competitive soccer player since
- 19:22she was like 7 or 8 and that's a whole different world.
- 19:26Whole hour we could spend on that and what I've seen in that
- 19:29crazy world. And and again, just to date you
- 19:31and I, the fact that you just said she's 14, I'm like, isn't
- 19:33she only like 5 or 6? Yeah, dude, she's a she's 14.
- 19:36She's a freshman in high school. He's what you were when?
- 19:41Yeah, crazy. If you think it's crazy, trust
- 19:44me, it's insane. But what?
- 19:47You know, what are the things I, I learned from her and I didn't
- 19:50I, I, I'm, you know, I, I'm thankful that I've seen this and
- 19:53understood this because as a coach, I, I didn't understand
- 19:56this at all. She has to be socially
- 20:00comfortable to play her best soccer.
- 20:04So when she joins a new team. Like for the first two or three
- 20:08weeks, and I hope she never hears this, she is terrible out
- 20:11there. Like she doesn't even look like
- 20:13she's played the game of soccer, right.
- 20:15And then all of a sudden after two or three weeks, once she
- 20:18finds a friend, she gets comfortable, she becomes one of
- 20:22the best defenders on the field. And it it has been at this time,
- 20:26I've seen this happen with three separate teams.
- 20:30And and, you know, at first, as an athlete myself, I didn't care
- 20:36who I was playing with. You put me out there and these
- 20:38are the guys. You're OK, let's do it.
- 20:39We're let's figure out how to win this game.
- 20:41Like I didn't care who they were.
- 20:43I didn't care if they were nice me.
- 20:44Like none of that mattered to me.
- 20:46I think that's Baker Mayfield. I think everywhere he was, he
- 20:50wasn't socially comfortable. And he got there in in Tampa, he
- 20:56got comfortable. He's now put in his roots and
- 20:59now it's not working the same way it was before.
- 21:02And so I'm concerned he's going to go back to that uncomfortable
- 21:06level. And when that happens, things
- 21:09get real ugly. And I don't think 8:00 and
- 21:129:00's going to win the division this year.
- 21:13So I I think this is going to be a rough season for the Bucks.
- 21:16Yeah, and and I, I do agree and and I, I will to push back a
- 21:21little in kind of defending. I think for him coming into
- 21:24Cleveland, he kind of needed to be that I would say like swagger
- 21:29bully, like he had to be the over cocky.
- 21:32Like I got the biggest one in the room and I'm just going to
- 21:34whip it out no matter what kind of kind of attitude.
- 21:37He's a trophy winner from Oklahoma, of course he felt that
- 21:40way, right? And number.
- 21:41One over pick. Yeah, 100%.
- 21:43And, and it's one of those like Cleveland needed that.
- 21:46Like if Cleveland ever needed like a personality, somebody to
- 21:49just basically come in and be, you know, how many first round
- 21:52picks have we seen that's like, you're going to Cleveland?
- 21:55I mean, I feel sorry for him, right?
- 21:57Like, I mean, you know, Johnny Manziel apparently didn't like
- 22:01go to practice or like, like watch film or whatever.
- 22:04But that talent was, I mean, the talent that's been wasted there
- 22:08that could have found a way in the NFL is just, it's travesty.
- 22:12Yeah. I mean, for years.
- 22:13I mean, you look at, you know, some great quarterbacks.
- 22:16You look at Brady Quinn, I mean, Brandon Whedon, he was like 30
- 22:20when he finally went in. So I mean that that one doesn't
- 22:22really count. But yeah, to your point, I mean,
- 22:24look at how long they had Miles Garrett.
- 22:26And I mean, he finally gets out and goes to, you know, a
- 22:28legitimate team now. And I mean, and he said and he's
- 22:31hurt and he still had success. It's like how how good do you
- 22:35have to be to still have success on the Browns type of guy?
- 22:38But nonetheless, I mean, Baker deals with that.
- 22:40And I felt like what really hurt him was he got hurt with the
- 22:43shoulder and he does what any true what I would say franchise
- 22:47quarterback wants to do and should do.
- 22:49If he tries to play through it, he plays extremely poorly and
- 22:54the fans are mad at him because he's playing poorly.
- 22:57It's like you can't have it both ways.
- 22:59You got to you got to respect the fact that he is playing hurt
- 23:02now, albeit he's not doing the best thing.
- 23:05Would you rather him, you know, sit on the bench and you just
- 23:08say always milk in the injury like he needs to be out there or
- 23:11do you want him out there? At least give him the effort.
- 23:13And then it doesn't help. He goes to the he goes to the
- 23:16Panthers, which at the time even more of a mess because they had
- 23:19him and Sam Darnold. They fumble.
- 23:21Both of them play. Your best ball then, right?
- 23:25And then, you know, he goes to the Rams.
- 23:26It seems like he has a little bit of revitalization just
- 23:29because he has an offensive head coach, which I think that would
- 23:32be probably the more interesting thing.
- 23:34If Todd Bowles gets fired, you know, who comes is at the head
- 23:38coach or if he leaves Tampa or if he gets traded from Tampa, if
- 23:41he goes to an offensive minded coach, do we see potentially a
- 23:45better version of Baker Mayfield?
- 23:48But to your point, I think I think part of the other issue,
- 23:50he comes to Tampa post Tom Brady and same thing, you know, won
- 23:54the division, has a losing record, but comes in.
- 23:57There's still a lot of talent there and and he's able to be
- 24:00successful. But like you said there, there
- 24:02might have been some complacency kind of been factored in.
- 24:05It's you know, he's maybe a little bit pissed because they
- 24:07didn't give him a big contract immediately.
- 24:09He's having to sit there and negotiate with it.
- 24:12But I, I think the biggest thing I would say even for him, like
- 24:15what what better way to just say, OK, I'm going to make you
- 24:20like eat your own words and I'm going to make you pay me because
- 24:23I'm going to go out here a ball out.
- 24:25Yeah, he needs to go back to the guy who entered that Cleveland
- 24:28room, the one you talked about that wants to whip it out and
- 24:30make sure, but he sees how big it is.
- 24:32He needs to go back to that swagger because if he did that
- 24:36and he was winning, I don't think there'd be any question
- 24:39what would be coming his way. Right, absolutely.
- 24:42But that that was what I thought.
- 24:44I just thought was area and I couldn't believe it when I saw
- 24:46the end of it. It's like, really?
- 24:47It's like they lost to the Browns.
- 24:50Yeah, but honestly, like, here's the catch to that.
- 24:52Like, I don't think people are actually given the Browns enough
- 24:55credit. Like I do think the Buccaneers
- 24:57are, you know, a middle of the road team this year, maybe maybe
- 25:03only six wins, but potentially up to 9, you know, somewhere in
- 25:06that range. They're oh, and two now, But I
- 25:09think the Browns are a lot better than people want to give
- 25:12them credit for because the narrative is always, well, it's
- 25:14the Browns. And you know, I'm not a, you
- 25:18know, I'm a Colts fan. So I couldn't stand Deshaun
- 25:20Watson for years. Then he goes and does this crazy
- 25:22stuff and it makes it worse. But if you guys watched him play
- 25:26on Sunday, he looked like the guy that I feared that we used
- 25:29to play. I don't even know how many years
- 25:31ago, 6, five years ago, whatever it was that JJ Watt used to be
- 25:36so upset that they were giving away the best years of his
- 25:38career. And he looked like that guy on
- 25:41Sunday. And so everybody who's
- 25:43questioning, like, why is Shadir not playing?
- 25:45Or, you know, it's 'cause Deshawn may still have something
- 25:48in the tank that nobody's been giving him credit for.
- 25:51And if that's the case, this Browns team can they're they're
- 25:54gonna, they're gonna be able to sneak up and bite some people.
- 25:57Yeah. And I do think the other
- 25:58advantage they have is, is Cleveland really young?
- 26:01I mean, aside from Desean, they're a truly young team.
- 26:04So there's a lot of, and it's kind of the same as it is every
- 26:07year. There's a lot of young building
- 26:09block foundations there. It's just making sure you at
- 26:11least have the quarterback right and the head coach because that
- 26:14seems to be the two biggest issues they always have.
- 26:17And for all the things that the the Browns have done so
- 26:19terribly, you know, people were really upset with them for
- 26:23trading Miles Garrett, but I actually thought they won in
- 26:27that trade. They got rid, they got rid of a
- 26:30stud that they got what, 2 first round draft picks for I think.
- 26:34And Jared Verse, who I believe Jared Verse is the up and coming
- 26:39premier defensive end. He's a guy who was a game
- 26:43wrecker as a rookie. Now you didn't put up the same
- 26:46numbers by any means, but if you had two first round picks to
- 26:49that, like I think they got way over market value and he's a
- 26:54scary, scary end on on an already pretty, you know, it was
- 26:58pretty decent defense even last year.
- 27:01And, and I feel like it's kind of the same situation as The
- 27:03Jets, like if they play, if they play everything right, you know,
- 27:06they could potentially get a quarterback for the future and
- 27:09they compare him with either a wide receiver, they comparing
- 27:11with an, you know, get an offensive line, shore that up
- 27:14or, or really any other type of weapon you'd want to do.
- 27:17You know, them and The Jets both, if they play their cards
- 27:19right, I think it'd be the same thing.
- 27:21They could be somebody that could really contend with and
- 27:24you know, you look at the schedule like damn, we have to
- 27:25deal with them for, you know, the next five years or so.
- 27:29We'll move on to the next one. They're they're in division
- 27:33rival and your Colts division rival of the Bengals at the
- 27:37Texans. Now this, this one, I feel like
- 27:39it it is a kind of a tale of two interesting stories because for
- 27:43the first time in really a long time, we've seen Zach Taylor and
- 27:48Joe Burrow come off of a hot start starting out two and O,
- 27:52whereas for what the last two or three years we've usually seen
- 27:55the opposite. You know, they start out O and
- 27:57two. It's like they're really
- 27:58sluggish. They can't get anything going
- 28:00and then they're having to play catch up as well as just hoping
- 28:03other dominoes fall into place to get them into the playoffs.
- 28:06So we have Cincinnati coming off to a hot start, but then Houston
- 28:10coming off of a really slow start, not only losing to
- 28:13Buffalo and what was a close game, but then kind of getting
- 28:16embarrassed by Cincinnati at home against them.
- 28:21So I guess we'll we'll start with the Texans first because
- 28:24obviously they're your in division rival.
- 28:26Do you feel like this is one of those this is just kind of an
- 28:28early test and you feel like CJ Stroud is going to make that
- 28:32change around post the the AFC championship game or not AFC
- 28:37divisional game against the Patriots.
- 28:39Do you feel like he makes that turn around or do you feel like
- 28:41this is one of those? It may be the same thing as like
- 28:44Tampa Bay. Most everybody comes back.
- 28:47They've added a little bit of pieces, but maybe they've gotten
- 28:50complacent and everybody's already figured out the Texans
- 28:54of old and now they have to try to replan for 2026.
- 28:59I think that one's tough and and I don't know that I have enough
- 29:02data to fully answer that question right now.
- 29:05I saw a graphic earlier today that CJ Stroud's statistics
- 29:10starting off this O and two star are worse than his rookie year
- 29:15when they started off O and two. So I tend to think that they're
- 29:18on the decline, but I'm afraid that that might be a bias and a
- 29:21hope more than it is what's really happening.
- 29:24Right. So, you know, I I want to see
- 29:26more data on that one. But I, you know, I, I do think
- 29:30in this game, the real story is the Bengals are also those
- 29:33dudes. And I do, you know, I, I think
- 29:35we, you know, we'll get to that. But I, I think that was part of
- 29:38what the Texans ran into. And so I don't think, I don't
- 29:43think that the Texans were prepared for that.
- 29:45I think that what they saw, you know, before when I think the
- 29:50Bucks and Bengals played week one, right, Isn't that I think
- 29:54they just assumed that was more the bucks than it was the
- 29:57Bengals. And I think that they I think
- 29:59that snuck up and bit the Texans.
- 30:01I don't think they were prepared with the right game plan because
- 30:04the Bengals defense is much, much improved from what it has
- 30:08been. And, you know, I, I think CJ
- 30:13Stroud was the I, I still think he's the premier quarterback
- 30:17from that class. I wanted it to be AR Clearly the
- 30:21Panthers thought it was Bryce Young and he's kind of showing
- 30:23that maybe they were right this season.
- 30:26But I still think CJ Stroud was the best quarterback in that
- 30:29class. What he did at Ohio State
- 30:31against Georgia in that playoff game alone told me he was that
- 30:34dog. But I think they went out and
- 30:37they got, you know, I really, they got David Montgomery to
- 30:40solve their running problems. I love David Montgomery.
- 30:42I mean, you want a guy who brings culture and who is just
- 30:46an all out dog running the ball. David Montgomery is the first
- 30:49guy that comes to mind. But I saw a clip of him about, I
- 30:54want to I want to say it was about a week before the season
- 30:56started and he talked about how he was still getting accustomed
- 31:01to the culture and how he there was, he expressed missing
- 31:05Detroit. And that's when I was like, oh,
- 31:09maybe this isn't what I thought it was going to be.
- 31:12And it seems like that's part of the problem.
- 31:15And that defense really hasn't shown out to be who I think I
- 31:20What's the name of the coach of the Texans of.
- 31:23Oh, Damico Ryan's. Yes, Damico Ryan's an ex Texan
- 31:26who was a dog himself, brought that culture.
- 31:30You know, it's one thing to teach culture and get some
- 31:33instant success. It's another thing to teach
- 31:37culture and then game plan and have that full on all season,
- 31:42year after year success. And I think he was able to bring
- 31:46the culture. I'm not sure he's able to bring
- 31:48that every year success. And I think that's what we're
- 31:51starting to see. I, you know, again, I'm a Colts
- 31:54fan, so this might be my bias getting in the way, but that's
- 31:57that's where I see the Texans and what's going on.
- 31:59And I'm sure we'll get to it at some point.
- 32:01But, you know, I'm happy the the the Texans are coming to Indy
- 32:05this week right now. Oh, for sure.
- 32:06And we will, we'll, we'll definitely get to that as we do
- 32:09we, we'll do a week, week 3 preview.
- 32:11I do have to kind of ask your thoughts on it because you, you
- 32:15know, because they're an indivision, you know, you'll,
- 32:16you'll see them a lot more. I feel like CJ is the de facto
- 32:20leader for the Texans, but realistically, I feel like he's
- 32:23only in that position because he's a quarterback.
- 32:26Like when you look at the team, you know they've got Derek
- 32:28Stingley, like he's a dog, but he's, it seems like he's kind of
- 32:32more quiet, more reserved. He's not really out there doing
- 32:34much. Same with Will Anderson.
- 32:37Same with Daniel Hunter, you know, same, you know, same with
- 32:41even David Montgomery. You know, this is a guy that he
- 32:43was, he was with the Bears, he's with the Lions and it's like he
- 32:47is the epitome of ground and pound, old school Smash Mouth
- 32:51football running. Back.
- 32:52He's one of my favorite football players to watch because of
- 32:54that. Absolutely, and I mean you and
- 32:57and it I think it's kind of hard for him not to miss it because
- 33:00you know, you you had kind of the perfect balance in Detroit
- 33:03of like it's third and short. Oh yeah, I gave it to Dave
- 33:06Montgomery. He's absolutely pounding through
- 33:08the offensive line to get you that first down.
- 33:10But if you want a speedster, you give it to Gibbs.
- 33:12I feel like for the Texans, they they he doesn't have that
- 33:16complimentary person to him. So he has to be the every down
- 33:19bell Cal, which he he probably could, but he's not going to put
- 33:24up put up the big gaudy numbers that you want him to get.
- 33:27And then like I said, I feel like they don't have that
- 33:29leader, that voice to kind of help establish that culture to
- 33:33help establish like, Hey, this, this is who we are.
- 33:36This is the this is the city we fight for.
- 33:38Now. I've heard CJ do that in
- 33:39interviews and I know he's tried to embrace Houston a lot, but I
- 33:43think a lot of it has been Houston fans are are frustrated
- 33:47with him because he had such a phenomenal rookie season.
- 33:50And then yeah, he's just been up and down the entire time.
- 33:53And it feels like whenever he gets in the big moments, you
- 33:56know, such as the divisional round, he he did 4 turnovers
- 33:59against the Patriots and kind of ultimately ended that.
- 34:01It's like I, I think if he kept it closer, if he played a little
- 34:05cleaner and they still lost, they'll still put a lot of love
- 34:08and support behind him. Now it's like, yeah, we don't
- 34:11know if we want the Texans to commit to you for that fifth
- 34:14year and you sign a long term deal.
- 34:16And obviously it's even the franchise is even kind of yeah,
- 34:19do we do we move forward with it?
- 34:21We'll see what you look like at the end of the year.
- 34:25So are you, I just want to clarify the question.
- 34:27Are you asking me if I think CJ is the guy?
- 34:30I would say, is there, is there a guy on the Texans, you would
- 34:34think that is like their true leader.
- 34:36Yeah, so I, you know, I think CJ gets a lot of Flack because he's
- 34:39more of that quiet leader type, right?
- 34:41He's not the in your face rah rah guy.
- 34:43But let me tell you about a guy who who was that guy who also
- 34:47had to learn how to win in the playoffs.
- 34:49And that guy's name was Peyton Manning.
- 34:50And don't get me wrong, I don't think CJ Strat and Peyton
- 34:52Manning are on the same level, but I do think that CJ Stroud
- 34:56has the same control and leadership of his offense that
- 35:01Peyton did in those early years. Not near what he, you know, was
- 35:04able to mastermind towards the end.
- 35:07But you know, CJ to me is the guy.
- 35:11He is that leader. I think his biggest problem is
- 35:15he didn't win at Ohio State. He's not sure how to win now.
- 35:19And, and, you know, there's a lot to be said for guys who know
- 35:24how to win. You know, Tom Brady is one of
- 35:26those guys. And we can say, oh, yeah, he won
- 35:28all these things with the the Patriots.
- 35:30What a lot of people don't know about Tom Brady.
- 35:32And I want to be very clear, I'm not a Tom Brady fan.
- 35:34In fact, I hate, I hate that I'm even talking about this right
- 35:37now. And I'm thinking about it.
- 35:39But Tom Brady won a national championship at Michigan as the
- 35:43second quarterback who still, I still don't understand his role
- 35:48in the team, But it was be compared to a pitcher coming in
- 35:52to close out a game. They they, they played in
- 35:56something crazy like 5 or 6. And somebody fact checked me.
- 35:59I might be wrong here, but it's a good amount of number of games
- 36:02where they were down in the fourth quarter and sent Tom
- 36:05Brady in and he led them back to win those games.
- 36:09And then they go to a national championship, same thing
- 36:11happens. That guy's a sixth round pick
- 36:14and he goes on to win. You know, I don't even want to
- 36:16say how many trophies that he won because we lost most of them
- 36:20to him in my opinion, but he was a winner 1st.
- 36:25And that's what CJ lacks and that's what Peyton lacked.
- 36:28I mean, how many times did Peyton throw ridiculous, gut
- 36:31wrenching interceptions in his first couple years in the
- 36:35playoffs? But he was as good as you could
- 36:37have ever, you know, asked any quarterback to be in the regular
- 36:42season. And I think that's a little bit
- 36:44of what CJ is experiencing. He doesn't know how to win.
- 36:48I mean, that's definitely, that's definitely what Allen's
- 36:52problem is out with the Bills. He's never, I mean, he went to
- 36:56Wyoming. They didn't win anything at
- 36:58Wyoming. You don't win anything at
- 36:59Wyoming. And you come into the NFL, the
- 37:01lesson of winning is a lot harder.
- 37:04You know, the only guy I've seen come into the league who wasn't
- 37:07a winner first and clearly was a winner is Patrick Mahomes.
- 37:11Like, I didn't do anything at Texas Tech, but man, he came in
- 37:14and, you know, after he was given the reins, he put on a
- 37:17show. But there aren't a lot of guys
- 37:20like that. And winning is hard.
- 37:22It's hard at the high school level in football.
- 37:24I mean, it's hard at the middle school level in football.
- 37:27You're talking about Pro Football.
- 37:28And if you don't know how to win and you don't know what that
- 37:30grit takes like, you can't always be the guy because of
- 37:33that. And I think that's what CJ runs
- 37:35into. I think he's just an ebb and
- 37:37flow guy. He was that at Ohio State.
- 37:39You know some some games he's gonna come out and and shock you
- 37:42with how his talent and other games he's gonna come out and
- 37:45shock you with his inability to do anything.
- 37:48Yeah, I, I think to to to, to piggyback off of what you said,
- 37:52as far as guys kind of having that that dog in them.
- 37:54You know, Tom Brady had to make do with, with a lot less as far
- 37:58as, you know, being being able to make it work and being able
- 38:00to make it with Peyton had to do a lot of the same things.
- 38:03So you had to kind of grow into that.
- 38:05You know, CJ, he's at Ohio State during some of the peak years.
- 38:10You know you've got Garrett Wilson, Chris Alave, you know
- 38:13you've got all the Mecca Buca you've got.
- 38:14All get it done. And top receivers and yeah, you
- 38:17couldn't get it done. I will say because I'm, I'm the
- 38:21same way. I am not a Tom Brady fan by any
- 38:23stretch of the imagination. I've never met somebody cry more
- 38:26in my life as a grown man, believe it or not.
- 38:28I have seen a few interviews where they ask him like, how did
- 38:31you prepare? Like, how did you style your
- 38:32game? Believe it or not, he was like,
- 38:33I would always look at what Peyton would do, watch his film
- 38:37because he appreciated how Peyton approached and played the
- 38:41game. So I'm not the if there is a
- 38:43positive from him, he did at least enjoy the sheriff and what
- 38:46the sheriff did and continues to do so.
- 38:49Oh well. I I mean, you know, I think Tom
- 38:52Brady was it was not below him to take anything he could from
- 38:56anybody to win. And that that comes back to that
- 38:58point I was making. He was a winner, right.
- 39:01Like he was not the best quarterback that he have.
- 39:03Some seasons he was great, yes. Oh yeah.
- 39:05But he was not the best quarterback in the league.
- 39:07And to your point, some of the teams he won with were very
- 39:11below standard of winning teams. And he was a winner.
- 39:16And and I think in in the heart of it, I think Bill Belichick
- 39:19was a winner. And I think that made a
- 39:21beautiful marriage. And I think Bill Belichick's
- 39:23figuring out in college, too, you know, like, I think he's
- 39:26because he stunned some people. I don't think anybody was ready
- 39:28for that Clemson game, even after what he'd done.
- 39:30Yeah, I. I was kind of surprised at how
- 39:32that ended, to be honest with you.
- 39:35But we'll move on to the next game.
- 39:38There we go. This one it probably this one I
- 39:41think I'm the most surprised about more than anything.
- 39:44The Raiders are two and O and the Chargers are O and two.
- 39:48This is the first time as a head coach for Harbaugh, collegiately
- 39:52or professionally, he is open to to start a season.
- 39:58Did you picture the Raiders doing this last year?
- 40:00And this is even without Fernando Mendoza starting.
- 40:03This is with Kirk Cousins at the helm running the Raiders.
- 40:07Well, you can mark my words here, and this is going to upset
- 40:10a lot of Hoosier fans, but Mendoza is is not the guy.
- 40:14I don't believe him to be the guy as a as a professional
- 40:17quarterback. He clearly was the guy for the
- 40:19Hoosiers, but I don't think he's going to be the guy anyway.
- 40:22So but yes, all of this has surprised me.
- 40:25Like like this is a twilight zone.
- 40:28First of all, like living out here.
- 40:30I live in San Diego, CA where the Chargers used to be.
- 40:34There's the people here who absolutely hate the Chargers
- 40:37because they left. And then there's the people who
- 40:39are who are die hard Chargers and still talk about them all
- 40:42the time. Right, right.
- 40:43And I wanted, I wanted Jim Harbaugh so bad to be the Colts.
- 40:47I mean, Jim Harbaugh is the reason I'm a Colts fan.
- 40:49The 95 AFC championship game, that 95 AF AFC team captain
- 40:55comeback Jim Harbaugh. I mean, I had his jersey was the
- 40:57first football jersey I ever owned.
- 41:00That was my guy. And so I'm a big Jim Harbaugh
- 41:03fan. So for that, I've.
- 41:05I even rooted for Michigan when he was there a little bit.
- 41:07And that was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my
- 41:09life. Yeah, but you know, like, not
- 41:13against any of my teams, but when you when if they was on.
- 41:15OK, I'll root for Jim. So I I do think the bigger shock
- 41:21here is that the Chargers are owing to and I think it's
- 41:24because they played the Raiders in the second week.
- 41:27So the Raiders be in two and O like I did not see that coming.
- 41:31I did think Kirk Cousins still had some seasons left in him.
- 41:34I thought it was ridiculous that people kind of, you know, wrote
- 41:38him off the way he did. But no, like, I don't think
- 41:43that, you know, the Raiders are also in that Browns and Jets
- 41:46category. So I don't know what's happened.
- 41:50Maybe it is Mendoza. Maybe he brought whatever
- 41:53Indiana was cooking and took it out there to Las Vegas.
- 41:57I but the Chargers B&O and two is just crazy to me right now.
- 42:01I mean, clearly Mike McDonald is not the mad scientist that we
- 42:07thought he was. Because if you can't if you
- 42:09can't beat the Raiders in this game, like it's going to be a
- 42:12long season. And Justin Herbert, also a guy
- 42:16who never figured out how to win, but is the guy right?
- 42:19Like, I mean, he's had some really insane seasons, but he
- 42:24doesn't know how to win. And I think that, you know, that
- 42:26winning is that winning isn't, is a category or a you know,
- 42:30like in Madden, they got all those attributes, speed and
- 42:33awareness. Winning should be one of those,
- 42:36you know, and and some people's is down at 1:00 and 2:00 and
- 42:39other people are the 99 and, and you know who those guys are?
- 42:43'Cause you'll 'cause you'll see it every every single week on
- 42:46the field. And they may still lose some
- 42:48here and there, but for the most part, you'll, you'll see the
- 42:50fight, you'll see the, you'll see the comeback start to
- 42:52happen. This is one that I was kind of
- 42:55surprised on and, and I don't disagree when I watched Mendoza
- 42:58last year all throughout college and obviously throughout the,
- 43:01that whole entire season, throughout the play offs and
- 43:03whatnot, I was surprised. It does kind of make me wonder
- 43:07though, is this kind of like a, I'm not going to say a reverse
- 43:11Nick Saban because Nick Saban, God, he had how many first round
- 43:15picks? Like how many five star
- 43:17prospects just absolutely stack these teams.
- 43:20And it's like a quarterback would come out of Alabama and
- 43:22it's like, oh, look at how he played in college.
- 43:24Yeah, he's thrown up to like Julio Jones and Amari Cooper.
- 43:27Like you have to suck to to not be good with them as your wide
- 43:31receivers. Like, I wonder if Mendoza is a
- 43:34kind of a product of Kurt Signetti just being a not only a
- 43:38great coach as far as getting guys, being able to fit them
- 43:41into a system and a piece that actually works.
- 43:44And will he be able to translate that into the NFLI?
- 43:48Do think there is kind of a secret weapon that he has
- 43:51because we just talked about him with Brady being a partial owner
- 43:55of the Raiders. You know, how much of that
- 43:58mentorship goes into potentially teaching him?
- 44:01And same with Kirk Cousins, because like you said, even for
- 44:04all his mistakes that he had at Washington, for all the mistakes
- 44:06he had at Minnesota, like he was a solid quarterback for, you
- 44:10know, 1012 years. Now, obviously the last couple
- 44:12of years in Atlanta, yeah, not so much.
- 44:15But I would also say that's not necessarily Kirk's fault.
- 44:17Like they, they paid him a ton of money.
- 44:19He's getting his bag. I don't blame him at all because
- 44:22I would be doing the same thing if I was in his position.
- 44:24They were like, you know what we're going to do?
- 44:25We're going to draft a kid that's like 26 years old already
- 44:29and we're going to draft him first round instead of maybe get
- 44:32you some more help. And I'm like, that's not exactly
- 44:35the smart move I would do if I was AGM of the Falcons.
- 44:38But yeah, I do agree. I think the Chargers being owed
- 44:41to with Herbert now their wide receiver room to me is still a
- 44:44bit of a question. I mean, I don't I don't feel the
- 44:49crap. What is his name?
- 44:51The wide receiver number 11 that like drops balls just constantly
- 44:56Johnston. Yeah.
- 44:58Johnston, Quentin Johnston, like he he's been really kind of a
- 45:02hit or miss. I mean, Ladd Mcconkey is solid.
- 45:05I watched him a lot at Georgia, like he's great, but he can't do
- 45:08it by himself. They get into Joku, but he gets
- 45:11hurt. The offensive line has injuries
- 45:13and then I feel like the defense is just old, like that is just
- 45:15an old defense that they're still having a rally from the
- 45:19previous head coaches blunders and whatnot.
- 45:21So not not super surprised on this, but we'll we'll move on to
- 45:26at least the last recap for week 3.
- 45:28Your Colts unfortunately coming up a little bit short against
- 45:32the Chiefs, but they did look a lot better than what they did
- 45:37against the Ravens. It definitely looked like they,
- 45:40you know, were clicking a little bit more on offense.
- 45:42But I do have to ask, because you are the Colts fan and
- 45:45because you you watch them pretty in depth, do you feel
- 45:48like this is the same recipe they had last year?
- 45:51Feed Jonathan Taylor because he's phenomenal back.
- 45:54You have an above off, above average offensive line.
- 45:57That's good. You've paid a lot of money into
- 46:00feed him the ball and just hope Daniel Jones doesn't have to be
- 46:03a quarterback too much. And I feel like once the kind of
- 46:08like what the Ravens did, they stopped Jonathan Taylor from
- 46:10running, Daniel Jones had to be, you know, a little bit more of
- 46:13an improviser and it caused them to kind of fumble.
- 46:16To me, I feel like it's the same recipe.
- 46:18They're just trying to do it again with slightly different
- 46:21pieces. Well, yeah, I, I, I, I don't
- 46:24question. It's the same recipe.
- 46:28But you know, as a Jonathan Taylor guy, I think it's the
- 46:32right recipe. The problem that I think, the
- 46:34problem that I think we've run into is our defense is not at
- 46:39all what was expected. And I think, you know, I saw a
- 46:43statistic today or yesterday that said we last year, we were
- 46:49the bottom four of the league. We missed 125 tackles.
- 46:54This year in the course of two games, we've already missed 22
- 46:57tackles. Wow, that's a staggering number.
- 47:00That's I think I ran the numbers and it was 182 missed tackles
- 47:04that were projected out right now.
- 47:06Like if that stayed consistent the whole way, Right, Right.
- 47:09So you can't win games if you can't tackle.
- 47:12Like that's, you know, honestly, what I saw from the Colts Chiefs
- 47:16game is, you know, I was really worried about Daniel Jones
- 47:20coming back. And yeah, he's not moving quick,
- 47:22But in Game 1, he was accurate. I mean, he was putting balls on
- 47:26guys, but he was not up to game speed.
- 47:29And I criticized the Colts for a very long time in not giving him
- 47:34any preseason snaps. You can't throw a guy out there
- 47:37who has is coming off an injury and doesn't know what the speed
- 47:41of that game is gonna feel like until he gets in it and expect
- 47:44him to perform. Like, there was no way in my
- 47:46mind we were even gonna compete with the Ravens.
- 47:49To be honest, it was worse than I thought it was gonna be, but I
- 47:52did think it was gonna be bad. Yeah.
- 47:54And then this week, coming in against the Chiefs, you know, I
- 47:58picked the, I picked the Colts to lose to the Chiefs.
- 48:01I called 3428, but I said what I thought was going to happen is
- 48:05that wasn't going to be a very close game.
- 48:08And instead it was going to be the Colts scored late and it
- 48:11looked good in the box score kind of thing, right?
- 48:13Yeah, I was wrong in that. I got the score pretty close,
- 48:16but I was wrong about the way the game went down.
- 48:18Last night was a prize fight. I mean, I saw the Colts
- 48:23throwback punches that I haven't seen them throwback since about
- 48:27week 9 last week last year. So the offense looks like it's
- 48:33ready to roll a lot faster than I thought it was going to be.
- 48:38Our defense though, we don't have linebackers who are
- 48:40tackling. In week one, our two linebackers
- 48:43combined for 8 tackles and they were all Davis Gaithier tackles,
- 48:49so Jalen Carlisle's didn't even make a tackle and CJ Allen's
- 48:53standing on the sideline. So then we come into this week,
- 48:56it's not the same, but it's pretty much more of the same in
- 48:59our inability to get around the field and tackle.
- 49:02And we also don't have any defensive ends, right?
- 49:05Like we don't have any pressure being applied to the
- 49:07quarterback. So if you take the the mad
- 49:10scientist Lou Amaniello and all his great plays and his great
- 49:15thinking, he's got the DBS, but we're lacking the linebackers
- 49:19who need to be making multiple digit tackles, like I'm talking
- 49:23about double digit tackles from both of them in order for his
- 49:27defense to work. And we have to have defensive
- 49:29ends applying pressure. If we have those things, then
- 49:33our DBS are going to be looking much better because those throws
- 49:36aren't going to be with all the time in the world.
- 49:39And that's what I, that's what I'm struggling with is we've now
- 49:42put a product out there that is 1/3 complete.
- 49:45Yeah. And I do think they were relying
- 49:47on CJ Allen to be a green dot guy and a guy who was out there
- 49:50in day one. But he gets a soft tissue
- 49:52injury. And if you've ever had a
- 49:53hamstring until you're ready to run full speed, it is both a
- 49:57physical and a mental thing. I once I once popped my
- 50:01hamstring so bad it took me almost two months to be able to
- 50:06even trust myself to get up to anywhere near my top speed.
- 50:10And so I can't imagine being a professional athlete being
- 50:13expected to be up there. So, you know, that's where I
- 50:17think the Colts have a problem. I, you know, they, they were,
- 50:21they were dogs though. They, they on defense, they gave
- 50:23up over 500 yards, but they were a bin, break bin, not bin, but
- 50:27not break defense like the old really great Colts teams were.
- 50:31We were all offense, but we can hold you to three points on your
- 50:34drive. That's what they look like.
- 50:36And I'm OK with that model. I'm OK giving up 500 yards.
- 50:40But our offense has to be that good.
- 50:43And we got to be able to figure out how to close them down.
- 50:45You know, if if we'd have told me that we were going to give up
- 50:48500 plus yards to the Chiefs and we were going to hold them to 27
- 50:52points in the first in the in the full game, like the four
- 50:55quarters, I'd have taken that any day of the week.
- 50:59Yeah, I will. I will be honest when I 'cause I
- 51:01didn't watch the entirety of the game, but I did catch the the
- 51:04last little bit as they finished regulation, then they go in
- 51:07overtime. I thought for sure they were
- 51:10going to give that, that, that last, you know, deep shot from
- 51:13Jones to, oh, what's his name, Treadwell Treadwell.
- 51:18I thought for sure they were going to call that a fumble and
- 51:20go to the Chiefs too. I was like, I'm waiting for old
- 51:24Tay Tay to just call down and be like, hey, we, you know, give my
- 51:27husband the give my husband the way I was.
- 51:30I was waiting for it. Well, I was so I'm on a I'm on a
- 51:33regular, I'm a regular panelist on a podcast called the the sick
- 51:37podcast anvil show, which is all about Colts.
- 51:40Check me out at Devin Colts, dude on all my stuff.
- 51:44But we just had this discussion and and the guys on that show
- 51:48are really upset with the way Sean Sean, I can't even talk.
- 51:51Shane Steiken called this game the the you know that he didn't
- 51:55go for the win at the end. They were both there by the way,
- 51:57they were inside the stadium. I think the emotions there get
- 52:00you. I don't think you can think
- 52:02clearly. I actually thought he played it
- 52:03right. You know, I hate giving the ball
- 52:05to Patrick Mahomes, but you know, you're 4th and eight.
- 52:10You know what? What he did was he sent in a
- 52:12play. If they got the look, go for the
- 52:14win. If they don't take the five
- 52:16yards, kick it to tie it. See what your defense can do and
- 52:20honestly like they put them in the third and long like they did
- 52:24everything they needed to do. Well, it's one of those because
- 52:28I always hear that whenever I see teams when they, when they
- 52:31do something risky or tricky on like fork down.
- 52:33You know, even as an LSU fan and as someone who attends LSU, like
- 52:37the whole miss thing, it was like, all right, go for it.
- 52:40And they screw it up. It's like it's a it's a 5050
- 52:42shot because if you get it, you're an absolute genius.
- 52:45Like you went for it, you trusted your guys, you did it.
- 52:48But if you don't, Oh my God, this guy's an idiot.
- 52:50What are you doing? Like it, It's a 5050 shot.
- 52:53So, I mean, I wasn't mad at it. Like you said, your if your
- 52:56defense can play well enough and you never know if you can get
- 52:58that one more stop to at least say that you did it, then yeah,
- 53:02you you walk away with a tie and then it it's better than a loss,
- 53:06but it is what it is. But we'll move on though to to
- 53:09the preview of of some week four games.
- 53:11We won't do all of them, but we'll do we'll do some of the
- 53:13bigger ones. This one, the Falcons at the
- 53:15Packers. I picked this one because
- 53:17Falcons finally have a starting quarterback back again.
- 53:19They have Michael Pinnix coming back as a starter.
- 53:22Now, for how long, we don't know that that that is TBD, but we
- 53:26know 2 is probably not going to be there, at least mentally and
- 53:30consciously. He may or may not be there.
- 53:32But nonetheless, you have the Packers going, you know, facing
- 53:36the Falcons, the Falcons looking for their first win real quick.
- 53:39Who do you think ultimately comes out with a win in this
- 53:42game? Do you think Phoenix can get the
- 53:43Falcons in the ship right under Kevin Stefanski or you think the
- 53:47Packers kind of cruise to to 2:00 and 1:00?
- 53:51Oh, no, I definitely think the Packers are gonna I, I actually
- 53:54don't think this game's gonna be close.
- 53:55I don't trust Pinnix as an NFL quarterback.
- 53:57I thought it was a ridiculous draft pick when they made it.
- 54:01So no, I think the Packers, like I said before, they're they're
- 54:04they always seem to be a little bit slow and not not really have
- 54:08things figured out, but but catch fire.
- 54:10I think this is a, you know, it's a potential gotcha game
- 54:13where the Packers think that they've got it.
- 54:15But no I I think Green Bay. I'd honestly pick Green Bay by
- 54:2013 plus in this game. OK, OK, I could, I could see it.
- 54:24I'm not going to lie, this one, another kind of interesting one
- 54:27because again, is it, is it a trap game for Buffalo?
- 54:30Because they're like, yeah, you know, the Chargers lost to the
- 54:33Cardinals of all teams that I'll be honest, I thought the
- 54:35Cardinals were going to be way worse than what they were.
- 54:38They lose to them, then they lose to the Raiders.
- 54:41So do you think the Bills get cocky or do you think the
- 54:42Chargers kind of, you know, right, the ship and like, hey,
- 54:45we'll get a big win and maybe this propels us to have a
- 54:48somewhat better season than what it's looking like currently at
- 54:51the moment. Were you let me ask you this
- 54:53question before I answer it. Were you able to see the the
- 54:56Bills Lions game, that first home game for the Bills?
- 54:58Did you see any of it? I saw part of it, but I didn't
- 55:01see all of it. OK, so it was, you know, I, I
- 55:04honestly, it was during my daughter's soccer practice.
- 55:06I went to the location, watched it while I was there.
- 55:08That place is electric and it's not going to be electric for
- 55:13just the first game. It's going to be electric all
- 55:15season to a degree where we already talked about how going
- 55:19to play in the Bills was like a big deal.
- 55:20And it was loud. No, I, I listened to that on the
- 55:23radio after I picked her up and they were talking about how hard
- 55:27as, as radio analysts with these things on, how loud it was for
- 55:32them that they were having trouble hearing within their own
- 55:34speakers because it like bounces off that top, the metal piece.
- 55:40And so no, I think it's going to be bills are going to ride that
- 55:43high every home game this season.
- 55:46And it, you know, they might lose 1, maybe two games at home.
- 55:50But I also would not be surprised if they're not
- 55:52undefeated at home and are the kind of the dogs on the block
- 55:55like we talked about. So no, I the Chargers are going
- 55:58to have to improve vastly for me to believe they've even got a
- 56:01chance in this game right now. It's kind of random.
- 56:03Do you think Buffalo's new stadium kind of becomes the new
- 56:06Lumen Field as far as like the crazy decibels?
- 56:08And it's like you can hardly hear yourself even think
- 56:11whenever you go there. So from what they said, from
- 56:13what I heard the radio people say, because again, I was
- 56:16listening to it on on Sirius, I think so.
- 56:20And I think that, I mean, in a playoff atmosphere, if you got
- 56:23to go there in the winter when it's already cold and they got
- 56:26that top open and that sound is coming off and, and no, I mean,
- 56:31I think that's going to be a scary place to have to go play.
- 56:34And if you remember too, most teams hate to come in here to
- 56:36the RCA Dome because that that same issue, it was all that
- 56:39sound was just compressed and getting just blasted back down.
- 56:42So the last two seasons in the RCA Dome, I had season tickets
- 56:47and then went into Lucas Oil and had season tickets and our
- 56:51season tickets for the RCA Dome were like 4 rows from the back.
- 56:56Like they weren't, you know, they weren't very good.
- 56:58We were first time ticket holders, that sort of thing.
- 57:00We got a lot better seats at Lucas Oil when we moved there.
- 57:02But that place, I mean literally you could feel the, the, what do
- 57:08I want to call it? The the the big metal piece that
- 57:11holds up the IT would ricochet right next to us like you could
- 57:15hear it going itself. Like the reverberations and
- 57:20whatnot. Yes, you could hear it as an
- 57:22additional sound. So the I think the same thing's
- 57:25happening there and you have that cold level and you add Alan
- 57:28being a dog and he might figure out how to win this year.
- 57:32Yeah, he he might. And especially if now he has a
- 57:34home field advantage just like Patrick Mahomes does.
- 57:36Yeah, it'll be, it'll be a rough time.
- 57:39Obviously, the game that you're going to highlight.
- 57:41We have the Texans coming to the Colts, both O and two looking
- 57:44for their first win of the season.
- 57:46Do you think this is 1? You know, whoever wins, do you
- 57:50think this kind of rights the ship to at least get them on
- 57:53performing better as the season progresses and as we move on
- 57:56down the line? I haven't looked at the, I
- 58:02haven't looked at Houston's schedule.
- 58:03I actually looked at the Jaguars schedule and boy, that is a
- 58:06scary schedule coming up for them because I wanted to see
- 58:09like, oh, what do the Jaguars face in the next couple games to
- 58:11see if we could if the Colts might be able to catch up with
- 58:14them. They got a really scary next
- 58:16three games. So I don't know what the what
- 58:18the Houston's has, but the Colts have in the next four games,
- 58:23three games that I I feel really strongly hang in my hat that
- 58:27they're going to win. And it starts with the Texans.
- 58:30Let's see, Texans have the Colts, Cowboys at they have them
- 58:35in Houston. They go to Tennessee and then
- 58:37they host the Jags, and then they host the Giants.
- 58:40Wait, that's Houston. That's so I don't think, I don't
- 58:43think Houston can beat the Cowboys.
- 58:45I mean, I'm not, you know, I know you're not a Cowboys fan
- 58:48anymore per SE, but there's some dogs out in Dallas and this, you
- 58:55know, I don't think this is the season, but I do think this is
- 58:58the season where they get back into that conversation of one of
- 59:02the top NFC teams. So for me, I think the Texans,
- 59:07this has got to be scary for them.
- 59:08Like they go to a place where they haven't predominantly won
- 59:12in history, right? I mean, for the most part, we've
- 59:14owned the Texans in Indianapolis.
- 59:18In Houston too, Ty Hilton used to wipe.
- 59:20For whatever reason, Ty used to. Wipe them up against the Texans
- 59:25himself. But you know, I, I think the
- 59:28Colts win this game. I, I don't think it's going to
- 59:31be a blowout by any means, But what I saw, I feel like the
- 59:35Texans, we saw who they were right now last weekend and that
- 59:39was 6 points against a really good team.
- 59:44And I think we also saw who the Colts can be and who, as long as
- 59:49they keep that trajectory, are this coming week.
- 59:52And I think the Colts win by I'm going to, you know, I'm going to
- 59:56say a field goal or more. I'd, I do think it could be
- 59:58close. I, I could see us winning by as
- 1:00:00much as 10 right now. I don't see us really doing much
- 1:00:03more than that. But if the Texans get out of
- 1:00:06here with with a win, the Colts are in a lot of trouble.
- 1:00:10Yeah, I think so. And I know this is maybe a
- 1:00:12little off topic. Do you think if they do the
- 1:00:16conversations and I, I don't know how much it's considered
- 1:00:19because honestly I thought this would have happened like 3-4
- 1:00:22years ago. You think the conversation
- 1:00:24finally starts to happen? Oh, hey Chris, time for you to
- 1:00:27go buddy. You have not been a great
- 1:00:29general manager. You have produced like no
- 1:00:32success. Like, time for you to go.
- 1:00:35All right, You know, I, I, you know, I, I, I struggle with this
- 1:00:39'cause I still have a belief in Chris Ballard, right?
- 1:00:41Like, I there, he's done a lot of really impressive things.
- 1:00:46And I think he came in and if, if you know, at the time when he
- 1:00:50came in, I was a, I, I, Ryan Gregson was leaving.
- 1:00:53I was, I was really zoned in. I was listening to the press
- 1:00:56conferences. He's, he laid out a plan that
- 1:00:58the truth is he's followed that model up until a couple recent
- 1:01:02decisions in the last, I'm going to say 818 months, which
- 1:01:06includes that Sauce Gardner trade.
- 1:01:09You know, I, I don't think that was in that plan.
- 1:01:12And I think they saw an opportunity to finally win and
- 1:01:15he sold out in a way that he had never done before.
- 1:01:19And so I, you know, I, I think he is probably on his last leg.
- 1:01:26And because of that, I think he is, you know, making some
- 1:01:29decisions that maybe aren't the best.
- 1:01:31And if that keeps happening, yes, he's out.
- 1:01:34But I think Carly Ursay has been very clear.
- 1:01:36I don't know if the if the directive is we make the
- 1:01:39playoffs or you're out, or if it's, you know, we got to win a
- 1:01:46Super Bowl or you're out. But I can tell you this team
- 1:01:48isn't going to win a Super Bowl. That's not who they are right
- 1:01:50now. You know, could they be a
- 1:01:53contender if they if they continue the progression that
- 1:01:56they did from week 1 to Week 2 every week in the season, maybe
- 1:02:00we're right there. But otherwise, like I don't
- 1:02:03foresee that happening. It's going to be a a real grind
- 1:02:06out season where we're gonna make the playoffs 9 and 8 as a
- 1:02:10wild card, 10 and seven, maybe as a division winner or as a
- 1:02:13wild card. And that right now, you know, we
- 1:02:17might even get in the playoffs and win a game.
- 1:02:19Like I could see us win in a game with what I saw last week.
- 1:02:22But can we go to Arrowhead? Can we go to, you know, New York
- 1:02:28with, with Allen out there and Buffalo?
- 1:02:31Like, I don't think, I don't think we can win those games.
- 1:02:34And, and again, it comes back to Daniel Jones has never been a
- 1:02:37winner and win at Duke and win with the Giants.
- 1:02:40I, I, I'm not convinced he can win one with us if we get in the
- 1:02:44playoffs with that team. But I think he's a guy after
- 1:02:47what I saw last season, what I saw in Week 2, who can
- 1:02:50absolutely lead us to where we need to go.
- 1:02:54Yeah, absolutely. And so this one, this one,
- 1:02:57again, we don't have to spend too much time on it.
- 1:02:59But again, I I think it's interesting because I don't
- 1:03:01think at any point we would have talked about the Raiders going
- 1:03:05to New Orleans. And Joy asked, I'm going to put
- 1:03:08it, I'm going to put it up here in a second.
- 1:03:09Joy asked for a link to your channel.
- 1:03:12She's really sweet. She watches my show a lot.
- 1:03:14She always hypes me up quite a bit.
- 1:03:16Absolutely sweet lady. But she is a Saints fan.
- 1:03:20She's also ALSU tigers fan Go Tigers.
- 1:03:23But I don't think any of us expected the Raiders to be two
- 1:03:25and O and the Saints to get a shocking win in Baltimore of all
- 1:03:30places to it. I did not expect that given, you
- 1:03:33know, they always have salary cap issues.
- 1:03:35They've lost a lot of good players, you know, but it it's
- 1:03:37kind of showing Kellen Moore is maybe a better head coach than
- 1:03:41what I thought he would be kind of going into that situation.
- 1:03:45So do you expect this to maybe be a kind of an entertaining
- 1:03:49game? Because it's two teams that I
- 1:03:51think most of us expected to maybe be at the bottom of the
- 1:03:54league, but here they are. It's like, OK, the Saints are
- 1:03:56kind of entertaining. They almost beat the Lions and
- 1:03:59they go into Baltimore and they beat Lamar and the Ravens of all
- 1:04:01teams. Well, I definitely think this is
- 1:04:04going to be a very entertaining game.
- 1:04:05In fact, you know, from, you know, I think that, and I've
- 1:04:09thought this for a while, Fernando Mendoza's ceiling is
- 1:04:14Kirk Cousins. Like I think his top ability is
- 1:04:17going to look very similar to to Kirk Cousins, right?
- 1:04:20But I also think that he he was a winner, right?
- 1:04:25So I think when he comes on, like I could be wrong when I
- 1:04:28said he wasn't the guy because, you know, maybe it's a winning
- 1:04:30thing and he's got Tom Brady to educate him and all those things
- 1:04:32in there. But what I see on the other side
- 1:04:36of the ball, and I think Joy's going to be happy about this
- 1:04:39boy. The Saints are some dogs, bro.
- 1:04:42Absolutely there to grind with you.
- 1:04:44What they did to the Ravens was embarrassing.
- 1:04:47If I'm a Baltimore fan and it is because of what the Saints have
- 1:04:51shown out lately, I like in the past couple seasons, Kellen
- 1:04:55Moore is, you know, I don't know if he's a head coach.
- 1:04:58I'm with you. I still got question marks on
- 1:05:00that. But he's a dog and call an
- 1:05:02offense and Tyler Shook looks like.
- 1:05:04I mean, he was not even on my radar as a guy that I would have
- 1:05:07thought was going to be anything in the NFL.
- 1:05:10And not only did he show out in his rookie season, I mean, if
- 1:05:13you saw the, the, the, I mean, his face was bleeding in the
- 1:05:17game and he was still playing his butts out.
- 1:05:21And that's what you need in a quarterback.
- 1:05:23That's what you want in a quarterback.
- 1:05:25I actually got the Saints winning this game.
- 1:05:27You know, like, I think they're at home.
- 1:05:30I think the Raiders have, they've been on a high.
- 1:05:32And sometimes when you've been on a high and you think you're a
- 1:05:35little bit better than you are, you get hit in the face.
- 1:05:38And I, I think the Saints know who they are and I think they're
- 1:05:41ready to throw that punch. So I think the Saints, but I
- 1:05:44think it's a good game. I think it's a within 7 point
- 1:05:47game, but I think the Saints get em could be on a last second
- 1:05:50field. I mean it could be really close,
- 1:05:52but I think the media is gonna all of a sudden be like, whoa,
- 1:05:56who are these Saints? Because they beat A2 and O
- 1:05:59Raiders team that shouldn't be owed to.
- 1:06:01But I think some of that excitement's come and joy.
- 1:06:03So I hope you enjoy it. I think she will 2nd to last
- 1:06:08one. This one I feel like is
- 1:06:09interesting because now we get to see the Rams have another
- 1:06:13true test. That's not, you know, 24 hours
- 1:06:16away in a in another country and all that debauchery that
- 1:06:19happened. The Rams go to Denver to take on
- 1:06:22Bo Nicks and the Broncos. Obviously they get a big win
- 1:06:25against the Giants. Unfortunately, that large part
- 1:06:29of that was due to Jackson Dart, you know, getting hurt and now
- 1:06:31come find out he's out for the season.
- 1:06:34Saw that? Terrible.
- 1:06:36Absolutely terrible 'cause I mean, he, he kind of the same
- 1:06:39thing as Baker. Like he's giving the Giants kind
- 1:06:41of that swag between him and Cam Scataboo, who apparently just
- 1:06:45eats CTE for breakfast. As far as like inviting
- 1:06:49everything. Like who, who do you have
- 1:06:52winning in this 'cause I mean, I feel like this is kind of really
- 1:06:55a tale of I, I would think 2 defenses that could really be
- 1:07:00elite or kind of, you know, poop, poop the bed and two
- 1:07:04offenses that can honestly do do the same.
- 1:07:07Yeah, I think the, you know, so the question mark here is the
- 1:07:11Broncos defense. Like that is the big question
- 1:07:13mark in this game. You know, the what the Ravens
- 1:07:17did in Week 1 was was poor team management.
- 1:07:19It wasn't that like if they'd have gone over there and and
- 1:07:22done some different things, I think they win that game too.
- 1:07:25The Broncos, however, I think right now they're fool's gold.
- 1:07:28Like last last week's game was not one to hang your hat on if
- 1:07:31you're a Broncos fan for for the things you said.
- 1:07:34And the defense still didn't play at the level that I would
- 1:07:37have hoped they'd played. So I feel like what they got was
- 1:07:41an extra pre season game, right? Like, I think that's what they
- 1:07:44got last week. And I think the Rams are gonna
- 1:07:48come in. I mean, the Rams are a bully,
- 1:07:50bro. They're a bully on offense.
- 1:07:52They're a bully on defense. And I think they're going to do
- 1:07:56some dirty, dirty work in in this scenario.
- 1:08:01So I'm a I'm a little bit cautious to say that the Broncos
- 1:08:08are anything and, and I, you know, shout out to the Broncos
- 1:08:12defense. They're my fantasy.
- 1:08:13I kept them as a in my in my dynasty league, thinking they
- 1:08:16were going to be awesome. And I'm not sold that they're
- 1:08:19the guys. But I do think this game is
- 1:08:21going to tell us if they're if they're a contender in the AFC,
- 1:08:25because if they go just get beat down at home to the Rams after
- 1:08:29what just happened with the Chiefs, they're Sean Payton that
- 1:08:35people are gonna be yelling at Sean Payton real quick in the
- 1:08:37media. Yeah, and they already have
- 1:08:39because he kind of, I guess, has this weird relationship with the
- 1:08:41offensive coordinator David Webb, because he he had to give
- 1:08:45up plays because they wanted to even hire an OCS.
- 1:08:47He's not giving up plays. He, he, he was told to give up
- 1:08:51plays. He's created the illusion of
- 1:08:53giving up plays. Sean Payton will not give up the
- 1:08:55control. And props to him.
- 1:08:57Like I was the same way as a coach.
- 1:08:59I wanted to control every aspect of the game that I could.
- 1:09:02And that's how he wants to be. And for that?
- 1:09:05And I'll be honest, like it worked last year and it's like
- 1:09:09I. Don't know why they told him he
- 1:09:10couldn't. I don't either.
- 1:09:11It's like, with the exception of Bonex getting an injury, you
- 1:09:14were one game away from the Super Bowl.
- 1:09:16And I mean, I think if Bonex was in that game, that's a whole
- 1:09:20different story. There's a different play, a team
- 1:09:22playing in that Super Bowl. I agree with that.
- 1:09:24And, and I think it would have been I, I don't know about a
- 1:09:27potential like different Super Bowl result, but I mean that
- 1:09:31like those team versus see, I mean that that would have been a
- 1:09:34hell of a game to watch, an absolute hell of a game to.
- 1:09:37Watch. I guess my question about that
- 1:09:39whole Sean Payton situation is he just took you in what season
- 1:09:432? Was that season 2 for him there
- 1:09:47or season 3? Three, 'cause he had Russ for
- 1:09:49one year, I think. One or two he takes you in
- 1:09:52season 3 with Bonex basically to the AFC championship game and
- 1:09:58your response is you can't call plays.
- 1:10:00Why are you broke? Why why are you trying to fix
- 1:10:03something that isn't broken? Like that's, that's a question
- 1:10:05that I had about that as a as a Bron, if I'd have been a Broncos
- 1:10:09fan, I would have been really upset about that because why are
- 1:10:14we changing it? It seemed to work before.
- 1:10:16And especially when they go out and they get another dynamic
- 1:10:18weapon and Jalen Waddle for Bonex to throw, like why
- 1:10:21wouldn't you put that combination of you know, you
- 1:10:24know, his play calling with Bonex, Waddle, Cortland,
- 1:10:28something like that. That's nasty.
- 1:10:29Nobody wants to deal with that. No, Jalen Waddle is like
- 1:10:33literally the prototypical wide receiver that Sean Payton would
- 1:10:36want. I mean, think about what he was
- 1:10:37able to do with Brandon Cooks. And I, I, I, I don't, I'm not a
- 1:10:41big Brandon Cooks guy, but Jalen Waddle is better than Brandon
- 1:10:44Cooks. And, and Brandon Cooks has been
- 1:10:47a dog in the league for, I mean, he I think holds a single record
- 1:10:51of being from the most teams and having 1000 yards season with
- 1:10:55each one of them. Do you know how hard it is to go
- 1:10:57from offense to offense to offense and still produce
- 1:11:00Incredible. And I think Jalen Waddle's
- 1:11:02better than him. So absolutely.
- 1:11:04And I mean, he was successful even with the Dolphins amidst
- 1:11:07all of their shenanigans that they deal with.
- 1:11:11Last one though, before, before we get out of here, because it's
- 1:11:13the Monday night game, the Eagles at the Bears.
- 1:11:16And this one is interesting because, again, the Eagles kind
- 1:11:19of play down to their opponents. And we may or may not see Caleb
- 1:11:23Williams in this. But much to your point that you
- 1:11:26talked about earlier with a hamstring injury, because it's a
- 1:11:28soft tissue. This isn't exactly something
- 1:11:31like, oh, yeah, if I don't do anything for like a week, it'll
- 1:11:33get better. Like it'll, it'll progress.
- 1:11:35No. And especially for as much as
- 1:11:37Caleb likes to move around as much as he's going to scramble
- 1:11:40and as much as he's going to want to move around because he's
- 1:11:42not your traditional like Peyton or Brady step up in the pocket
- 1:11:47and, you know, cerebrally, you know, dissect the field and, you
- 1:11:50know, dissect your defense. Like, I don't I, I, I have the
- 1:11:55Eagles winning this, unfortunately, because, you
- 1:11:57know, I I just because the quarterback play like I like
- 1:12:00Tyson Baigent, but I don't feel like he's going to be able to do
- 1:12:02enough in Ben Johnson's system, even with all the talent that
- 1:12:06the Bears, you know, have on offense to be able to, you know,
- 1:12:09counteract Philly, at least having their franchise
- 1:12:12quarterback with. I think Saquon is potentially
- 1:12:15going to miss some time because he has a little bit of some
- 1:12:17injuries as well. But this is just one of those
- 1:12:20when I heard, oh, yeah, Caleb might start.
- 1:12:23Don't do that. Don't rush him back.
- 1:12:24Like, it's still early in the season.
- 1:12:26You can lose a couple of games and it's not going to be the end
- 1:12:28of the world. But but what's your thoughts on
- 1:12:30it? Well, first of all, I 100%
- 1:12:32agree. And you have to protect him from
- 1:12:34himself in that. There's no, I mean, if you, if
- 1:12:37anybody who saw that game, I was actually watching that game live
- 1:12:39and they did a replay where you could see his face when it
- 1:12:43tweaked and you could see him reach back and try to get it.
- 1:12:46And then he just went both legs limp when he fell.
- 1:12:48I don't care how light of a of a tweak it was.
- 1:12:52Like even if he got away with it just being a tweak, but he he
- 1:12:55left that field. That was more than a tweak.
- 1:12:57That was definitely a pull. I'm glad it wasn't a tear.
- 1:13:00I was really worried. I texted some people like, I
- 1:13:02think he tear tore it, you know, and I was really worried about
- 1:13:05that. But you know, I think the story
- 1:13:09of the the Vikings Bears game was more about the Vikings and
- 1:13:13and what they can do than it was.
- 1:13:15The Bears went from 59 points to six points.
- 1:13:18I think that was a story more about the Vikings.
- 1:13:21So my fear here actually is that this is a catch you game for the
- 1:13:25Eagles. Here's why I think the Eagles
- 1:13:28win this game too. I think they probably win by 10
- 1:13:30or more. However, there is a reality
- 1:13:34where they go in here thinking, well, the bill, the Bears just
- 1:13:37scored six points against the Vikings.
- 1:13:39They don't have Caleb Williams and Tyson Baigent puts up 325
- 1:13:44and two or three tuddies on him and and and wake them up and win
- 1:13:48this game somehow, and I think that's a Ben Johnson ability.
- 1:13:52Do I think it will happen? No.
- 1:13:54Do I think it's possible and there's a reality?
- 1:13:56Yes, but I got the eagles by 10. You know, me playing the
- 1:13:59conservative. This is what I think the the
- 1:14:01majority of the universes. It's going to happen.
- 1:14:04Yeah, and it's funny. Joy commented on this.
- 1:14:06So I have a buddy that I do this show with two named MM is from
- 1:14:10Chicago. He lives, eats, breathes and
- 1:14:13dies Chicago Bears. So and he's actually a huge
- 1:14:16Tyson Bajet fan too, so he would be ecstatic to hear you say that
- 1:14:19there's a possibility. There's a reality.
- 1:14:21I'm not saying this happened. There's a reality.
- 1:14:23Like, like he could possibly do 325 and like, Mike would be
- 1:14:27ecstatic right now to hear that. Hey, he's a solid backup.
- 1:14:31He's he's a very solid backup. And if there's there's anything
- 1:14:35that we've learned about the NFL, it is that a solid backup
- 1:14:38can flash in the pan week by week.
- 1:14:41And who better to do it against an Eagles team that just made
- 1:14:44Cam Ward look good and the Titans look good.
- 1:14:47And I don't think they're very good.
- 1:14:49I'm still mad at at, Oh my gosh, who's the good morning football
- 1:14:56guy? Michael Strahan.
- 1:14:58No good morning football with it's a not.
- 1:15:02Michael Strahan's a good morning American now I can't think of
- 1:15:07his name. Kyle Brandt.
- 1:15:09Kyle Brandt. I got a big bone to pick with
- 1:15:11Kyle Brandt. He picked the Titans to make the
- 1:15:13playoffs. I got major issues with that as
- 1:15:16a wild card, and so to me, they're Owen, too.
- 1:15:20I'm really glad about that. I hope he takes them off their
- 1:15:22list. But the Eagles played down to
- 1:15:24them in a game they shouldn't have.
- 1:15:25It's possible they do that with the Bears and Tyson.
- 1:15:28Beijing shows out. Yeah, I think the, I, I think
- 1:15:31the two things that kind of offset and we'll see ultimately
- 1:15:34where it leads to. You have a very old Philly
- 1:15:37offensive line like they're like they're still good, but they're
- 1:15:42old. Like Wayne Johnson.
- 1:15:43This is probably going to be his last season.
- 1:15:45Obviously they lost Kelsey within the last couple of years
- 1:15:48due to some age. So they do have some other
- 1:15:50younger pieces in there, but for the most part they are older.
- 1:15:53Saquon got hurt, you know, and there's been a lot of questions
- 1:15:56with Jalen Hurts. I for one, I watched Jalen at
- 1:15:59Alabama. I watched him Oklahoma, thought
- 1:16:01he was great. I didn't mind him going to
- 1:16:03Philly until I can't. It's funny Joey posted this.
- 1:16:09I hate him so much I can't even remember his name.
- 1:16:11That's how I feel about the Eagles head coach Nick Siriani.
- 1:16:14Like I like, I cannot stand Nick Siriani so much.
- 1:16:17And it was like between him and then just the tush push thing
- 1:16:20and I'm like, I can't stand. Him, dude, the tush push is
- 1:16:23brilliant. It's brilliant.
- 1:16:24It it's one of those it's funny when I as much as I dislike
- 1:16:29Philly, even though I'm not a Dallas fan anymore, the the hate
- 1:16:32for Philly is still strong. And it got even worse when I had
- 1:16:34to do a work trip to Philly, and that was a whole awful
- 1:16:37experience with their airport and whatnot.
- 1:16:40It was like, I'm watching this and I heard people like, oh, we
- 1:16:43want to vote to ban the Tush push.
- 1:16:44I'm like don't do it. No, no, that's that's been a
- 1:16:47legal part of the game for since the game's inception.
- 1:16:50That is that the roots of what the game is.
- 1:16:52If you can't stop it, too bad you.
- 1:16:54Can't win. You got to figure out a way and
- 1:16:57teams have because it's obviously not as effective as
- 1:16:59much as it was anymore. And it may also be just you have
- 1:17:02to have the right skill players like a Kelsey, like the
- 1:17:05offensive line that they have to make that.
- 1:17:08Yeah, Jalen. I mean, Jalen Hurts is a dog
- 1:17:10too, bro. Have you ever seen what he?
- 1:17:11What he? Oh.
- 1:17:15My goodness, it's no wonder he's he's at the back of that push
- 1:17:18and of course they're going to win that.
- 1:17:19Right. And and plus it was one of those
- 1:17:21that's like, God, if if you give Nick Siriani that fuel for his
- 1:17:24ego, like he'll never, we'll never hear it now, never hear
- 1:17:27the other. No, do not ban it.
- 1:17:28Whatever you do, don't ban it. Just figure out how to stop it.
- 1:17:31Exactly. But nonetheless, man, I
- 1:17:33appreciate it. This has been an absolute blast.
- 1:17:36Thank you again. Thank you so much.
- 1:17:39No, thank you, man. So I put it up on here.
- 1:17:41I'll put it up on here again if you want to hear more of of
