- 0:39SPEAKER_07: What's up, guys?
- 0:40SPEAKER_07: Steven here.
- 0:41SPEAKER_07: Um, we're gonna get you into the episode here in a second, but we got some breaking news here uh as I'm editing this podcast right now.
- 0:49SPEAKER_07: Um it looks like according to Trevor Coburn on Twitter, uh, and he credited Pete Christie um that Kevin O'Banner is likely to be back in a Texas Tech uniform next year.
- 1:03SPEAKER_07: Um, no official word or statement on that yet.
- 1:07SPEAKER_07: Um, just Mark Adams saying, you know, that he thinks he's gonna be a Red Raider next year.
- 1:13SPEAKER_07: And, you know, coming from the man himself, I would now expect Kevin O'Banner to return.
- 1:18SPEAKER_07: Um, this is huge.
- 1:19SPEAKER_07: If this if this does come to fruition like we think it's gonna do, um, this is so big for Texas Tech.
- 1:25SPEAKER_07: Uh, getting a returning starter, getting a guy who really came on uh at moments in this year and was your best player in some of these games.
- 1:33SPEAKER_07: Uh, three double doubles in the NCAA tournament this past season.
- 1:37SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, he can get hot from the perimeter.
- 1:39SPEAKER_07: He grinds down low.
- 1:41SPEAKER_07: He's a great rebounder, uh, even though he's a little undersized, but he's he makes it work.
- 1:45SPEAKER_07: And uh now he's been a year in the system, and and defensively I thought he made strides uh from his Oral Roberts tenure to his Texas Tech tenure.
- 1:53SPEAKER_07: So um, man, and and to be honest, I'm I'm KO's number one fan.
- 1:58SPEAKER_07: I mean, honestly, and every time Kevin O'Banner shot the basketball, I was happy.
- 2:02SPEAKER_07: I know his three-pointer dipped uh pretty tremendously from uh his Oral Roberts years, but um, you know, I still believe in Kevin O'Banner and and I'm I'm still happy.
- 2:13SPEAKER_07: I know I know how hard that guy works from people we've talked to, and um we just uh are extremely excited me and and I can speak for Tristan on this.
- 2:23SPEAKER_07: We're both extremely excited if Kevin O'Banner does come back because that's just another leader in the locker room.
- 2:28SPEAKER_07: It's another he's a good dude, he's a good person, he can get everybody instilled in the culture.
- 2:33SPEAKER_07: Uh, you know, yeah, the more returns you get, the better.
- 2:36SPEAKER_07: And uh he really came on at moments in this year.
- 2:39SPEAKER_07: Uh there was the Baylor game where he just went absolutely nuts in that second half.
- 2:43SPEAKER_07: Uh he had a crazy good game against Texas at home.
- 2:47SPEAKER_07: Uh, you know, knocked down, I believe, five, three pointers that game.
- 2:50SPEAKER_07: So um, Kevin O'Banner, looking like he's coming back.
- 2:54SPEAKER_07: It's massive news um for Texas Tech and uh, you know, the Big 12.
- 3:00SPEAKER_07: I think this is gonna be one of your uh he was a Big 12 honorable mention, I believe, last season.
- 3:05SPEAKER_07: So he's coming back.
- 3:06SPEAKER_07: I I I'm so happy.
- 3:09SPEAKER_07: I I don't know what to say.
- 3:10SPEAKER_07: This this news just came out, and uh, you know, I we had to say something while I was editing the pod.
- 3:15SPEAKER_07: Um we we also didn't mention one more thing when we were talking about transfers uh at the top here, and that's an interesting article came out from 247 Sports that said some interesting notes about Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 3:31SPEAKER_07: Because this is a guy who put out his um he put out his statement, put out his graphic saying that uh you know he was not gonna return to Texas Tech, he was gonna look for different opportunities.
- 3:42SPEAKER_07: He put his his name in the transfer portal pretty much immediately after Tech lost to Duke.
- 3:47SPEAKER_07: So, you know, we all kind of figured, hey, you know, the guy's gone.
- 3:51SPEAKER_07: There's no real chance that he's coming back.
- 3:53SPEAKER_07: And then he put it out that he, you know, in fact was not.
- 3:56SPEAKER_07: So apparently uh it's been weird that he hasn't, you know, chosen a different school yet.
- 4:02SPEAKER_07: And I think there's some behind-the-scenes stuff going on to potentially, and now I'm not saying this is gonna happen.
- 4:10SPEAKER_07: I still think there's a low chance this does happen, but there is some hope remaining that Terrence Jr.
- 4:18SPEAKER_07: could end up back in Lubbock next year.
- 4:20SPEAKER_07: Um now, again, I'm not I'm not saying that this is gonna happen.
- 4:25SPEAKER_07: I'm not I'm just going solely based on the article uh that 247 put out there.
- 4:31SPEAKER_07: And they said, you know, it doesn't make sense to go transfer to Kansas State or something.
- 4:37SPEAKER_07: Uh, you know, why why wouldn't he just return back to Texas Tech?
- 4:41SPEAKER_07: That's probably Shannon's best option here.
- 4:44SPEAKER_07: And uh, you know, if you follow Terrence Shannon on social media, you'll see his Twitter is all over the place.
- 4:50SPEAKER_07: I I always thought it was weird.
- 4:52SPEAKER_07: Now, he could just really love Texas Tech, he could just really love the program and and you know, just thought that for his career it's best that we part ways.
- 5:01SPEAKER_07: And I was kind of in agreement on that.
- 5:03SPEAKER_07: But if you see his Twitter, he's still he's liking everything Texas Tech still, and he's quote tweeting and he's tweeting stuff like hey, this pop Isaac's kid is gonna be the real deal.
- 5:15SPEAKER_07: Uh, you know, he's liking uh Jamarion Williams's um commitment post to Texas Tech.
- 5:22SPEAKER_07: And then you know, you figure for a guy that's just not gonna be with the program next year that this stuff is just kind of odd.
- 5:28SPEAKER_07: So I don't know.
- 5:29SPEAKER_07: I I'm just speculating here.
- 5:31SPEAKER_07: It could be something to look at.
- 5:33SPEAKER_07: Um, just keep an eye out on Terrence Shane Jr.
- 5:36SPEAKER_07: because he may not be 100% gone next season.
- 5:40SPEAKER_07: But um we haven't heard about Kevin McCullough.
- 5:43SPEAKER_07: It seems like he's really trying his best to uh get in and and get his name out there for the NBA draft and uh go through some workouts and talk to some teams and everything like that.
- 5:53SPEAKER_07: So we may not get a Kevin McCullough decision until July, possibly.
- 5:58SPEAKER_07: I mean, that's when we you think about last year, that's when we got Kevin O'Banner after and Terrence Shannon decided he was coming back.
- 6:04SPEAKER_07: That was all July because uh they were going through the NBA draft process.
- 6:07SPEAKER_07: So um I believe the deadline is somewhere around late July for players to take their name out of the draft and and return to college.
- 6:16SPEAKER_07: So uh this can be a long process with when it comes to uh Kevin McCullough, but just be happy that Kevin O'Banner is likely to return to Texas Tech next season.
- 6:26SPEAKER_07: Uh again, still no official word, but uh it's looking good, folks.
- 6:31SPEAKER_07: Uh, gonna shoot you over to the previously recorded bit that we did um with our buddy Joe Goodman and uh the beginning of the episode.
- 6:38SPEAKER_07: So here you go.
- 6:42SPEAKER_07: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns of Nation Podcast Network.
- 6:48SPEAKER_07: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 6:51SPEAKER_09: And Tristan, we are back, baby.
- 6:54SPEAKER_09: We are back, man.
- 6:56SPEAKER_09: I know y'all missed that whole week of no talking tech podcast.
- 7:00SPEAKER_09: I know y'all were like, Well, I what am I gonna do with myself without without without my dumbass voice, you know?
- 7:07SPEAKER_09: So, but but we're back, so it's your your week will be complete once more.
- 7:12SPEAKER_07: And we have a new podcast off season series.
- 7:16SPEAKER_07: We did an off-season series last offseason.
- 7:18SPEAKER_07: Now we are doing it this offseason with basketball now out of the way.
- 7:22SPEAKER_07: We just have baseball, and we are gonna talk about the new Big 12.
- 7:26SPEAKER_07: We are gonna have so many guests on for you.
- 7:28SPEAKER_07: We are gonna talk about everything new Big 12 from all different perspectives of everybody in the conference.
- 7:34SPEAKER_07: We are starting with our good buddy Joe Goodman from Baylor.
- 7:37SPEAKER_07: So we're gonna get the Baylor perspective on the new Big 12.
- 7:41SPEAKER_07: But first, we need to talk about the some some Texas Tech news because we've been out of it here for about two weeks.
- 7:48SPEAKER_07: We haven't talked to the people about everything good that has happened for Texas Tech, which includes a lot of transfer portal stuff.
- 7:55SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I mean, it just we're we're seeing the fruits of Joey Maguire's labor, man.
- 8:00SPEAKER_09: His his uh uh he is just magnet, he's just a magnet, man, pulling all these boys in.
- 8:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:06SPEAKER_07: And the biggest transfer, I think, had just just announced he's coming to Texas Tech today, which is the Texas AM transfer tight end Baylor Cup.
- 8:18SPEAKER_07: This man was the number one ranked tight end of the 2019 class.
- 8:23SPEAKER_07: He's a former five-star, four-star, depending on where you look.
- 8:26SPEAKER_07: Uh, he's first off, he's six foot seven, he's extremely talented.
- 8:31SPEAKER_07: The guy is a I mean, he just had a lot of injuries at Texas AM.
- 8:35SPEAKER_07: He looked for a new scene, this happens all the time.
- 8:38SPEAKER_07: And Joey McGuire was able to get this guy to Texas Tech, so he's looking for a fresh start with the Red Raiders.
- 8:43SPEAKER_07: And man, I could not be happier with him.
- 8:46SPEAKER_09: Dude, I I always appreciate an Aggie or Longhorn that finally sees the light, right?
- 8:51SPEAKER_09: I mean, he makes finally making the right decision and coming to the correct place.
- 8:56SPEAKER_09: But dude, this is excellent.
- 8:57SPEAKER_09: I mean, we we definitely needed another star to fill into the uh tight end role, and and I mean, it doesn't suck getting a guy that's as highly talented as him.
- 9:04SPEAKER_09: So we definitely it's just every transfer we get in every recruiting news that keeps coming out, it's like we've obviously that's that's more obviously next season more so now.
- 9:14SPEAKER_09: But dude, it's just it gets you so hyped for the football season coming up, it's always more exciting during a new era.
- 9:20SPEAKER_09: But wherever you see all these tools coming together like they are, it just kind of gives you hope that maybe this season is one you can get a little more excited about than normal in this circumstance.
- 9:31SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I think a lot a lot of new coaches when they first come into a new program are thinking, hey, we need to just start over, we need to get my guys in here as quickly as possible.
- 9:42SPEAKER_07: And what Joey McGuire has done is kind of just combining that effort, which is bringing in certain transfers to compete immediately, but also getting his fair share of guys from the you know 2022 and 2023 class, freshmen incoming to help build the culture that he wants to build.
- 10:02SPEAKER_07: And so I think you know, Matt Wells did a good job in the transfer portal, he didn't do a good job with getting freshmen in here.
- 10:09SPEAKER_07: Cliff Kingsbury kind of got some freshmen in here, didn't really do a good job with the transfer portal.
- 10:14SPEAKER_07: Joey Maguire is trying to find that balance and getting these extremely talented guys from the transfer portal.
- 10:20SPEAKER_07: We just looked at it.
- 10:20SPEAKER_07: We have 12 incoming transfers coming into this year's team while also currently having the number two class in the nation for 2023.
- 10:30SPEAKER_07: I mean, this is what you wanted from Joey Maguire.
- 10:32SPEAKER_07: You wanted, and this is what you wanted for Texas Tech is better recruiting, and we are so getting that.
- 10:38SPEAKER_09: It's big, it's been our biggest complaint, and and I know you just said number two in the nation, and that's obviously insanity to say out loud and in in the English language, but not that long ago, our guns up nation mothership uh account tweeted first time in history, Texas Tech was number briefly number one in the entire nation in recruiting for 2023.
- 11:01SPEAKER_09: So just incredible historic things are happening under Joey McGuire.
- 11:06SPEAKER_09: He hasn't even coached a single game yet.
- 11:07SPEAKER_09: Maybe it's a honeymoon phase, but I I'm happy to ride that high as long as we can.
- 11:11SPEAKER_09: He's proven that he he's here to win, he's here to build his culture.
- 11:15SPEAKER_09: He's he's not he doesn't really seem like he's here to sell us something that we're not gonna get because it's just the results are already showing what he wants to do at Texas Tech.
- 11:24SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and I mean, obviously, you know, recruiting rankings are going to change for 2023 as we progress, but you name somebody else exactly, but seriously, seriously, though, you name a coach that comes into a program that has not been good for a decade, that has the following year the a top five recruiting class early on in April.
- 11:49SPEAKER_07: No chance, no chance.
- 11:51SPEAKER_07: Uh nobody but Joey McGuire can do that.
- 11:53SPEAKER_07: So uh yeah, obviously, you know, we're probably not gonna stay at number two, but we do have we are gonna finish, you know, a top 30 class, I bet, which is just absolute insane.
- 12:05SPEAKER_09: Hey man, we're not just talking about a program that's been down on its luck for a long time now.
- 12:09SPEAKER_09: We're talking about a program who has struggled with recruiting, like obviously their win or loss record has been what it's been, but you know, there's a lot of you know what's regarded as good programs that no matter when they suck, their recruiting classes are still commonly found in the top 25, you know.
- 12:25SPEAKER_09: So, but what we just have not been that either.
- 12:28SPEAKER_09: So it it's just a great start to see us kind of find our footing again, once again, in the football world where you know we we absolutely deserve to be, you know.
- 12:37SPEAKER_09: So it's just it's fascinating to watch because we've just never seen this kind of movement happen at Texas Tech.
- 12:43SPEAKER_09: At least not us young men have never seen something like this, yeah, for sure.
- 12:47SPEAKER_07: So uh I think we can both agree that Joey McGuire has been fantastic to start off his coaching career at Texas Tech.
- 12:53SPEAKER_07: Now we just need to see it on the field, but let's move on to somebody who has shown it on the court in Mark Adams and basketball.
- 13:01SPEAKER_07: Transfer portal is basically just free agency.
- 13:05SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's it's a whole crazy new thing with college basketball where uh the transfer portal game is just you're you're getting a new team every single year.
- 13:14SPEAKER_07: Uh guys are leaving constantly.
- 13:16SPEAKER_07: It's just it's it's nuts.
- 13:18SPEAKER_07: And whether you like it or hate it, it is what it is.
- 13:20SPEAKER_07: And so we need to talk about it because Texas Tech has been at the center of transfer portal stuff for the past few seasons.
- 13:28SPEAKER_07: And so we added a guy since we've last talked to y'all in Gardner Webb transfer, Demarian Williams, who is a guard, he's fantastic.
- 13:39SPEAKER_07: He's uh he averaged 14 and a half points a game last year, four and a half rebounds, shot 39 from three and 80 from the free throw line.
- 13:46SPEAKER_07: And that's the most important factor of all this.
- 13:49SPEAKER_07: This guy's a shooter, he can knock down, and that's something that we severely missed this past season in 2021-22 is a bunch of shooters.
- 13:58SPEAKER_07: And I think Mark Adams realized that.
- 13:59SPEAKER_07: And he saw a guy from a lower program that he thought can, you know, uh generate his game to the power five level, and I think he's gonna do that.
- 14:09SPEAKER_09: I think Mark Adams has shown that he's good at picking guys that come from the lower level that are gonna make an immediate impact.
- 14:15SPEAKER_09: So some of our favorite players this past season were.
- 14:18SPEAKER_09: Um, and I I feel really good about this transfer.
- 14:21SPEAKER_09: Uh, one, because it's great to get one player, but it's good to just get the lid off of transfer portal season, you know, get the first one in.
- 14:28SPEAKER_09: You know, it felt like this guy got roped in immediately once uh uh transfer portal talk started and got got going.
- 14:33SPEAKER_09: So now the courting is really full full blown going that we're finally getting we're actually getting guys in really quick.
- 14:39SPEAKER_09: You know, see people are obviously obviously making decisions, but I feel like this guy like wasn't even floated out there.
- 14:43SPEAKER_09: We reel we reeled him and reeled him in immediately.
- 14:46SPEAKER_09: So it's good to see our guys that are on the the ground running right now, getting some boys.
- 14:51SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and I mean as soon as we locked him down, we're like, this is a Mark Adams guy, he's six foot five, you know, he's he's a shooter, he's he's this guy from a lower program.
- 14:59SPEAKER_07: This is exactly what Mark Adams likes, and uh, you know, this is uh it's just a great ad.
- 15:04SPEAKER_07: I think he's gonna see some real minutes for this team next year, and he's got three years of eligibility.
- 15:08SPEAKER_07: So that's something that's a little different from what Mark Adams got last year in terms of you know Adonis Arms, Davion Warren, Bryson Williams, guys that just had one year.
- 15:17SPEAKER_07: This guy's got three years.
- 15:18SPEAKER_07: So uh hopefully we'll turn him into a great player here at Texas Tech, and we'll see a lot of him years to come.
- 15:24SPEAKER_09: Shoot, yeah, man.
- 15:26SPEAKER_09: That that I love the eligibility.
- 15:27SPEAKER_09: That's almost like getting a high school guy, but maybe even a little better.
- 15:30SPEAKER_09: Because he's since he's seen the college game, he still has all these all these years left.
- 15:33SPEAKER_09: So I love that.
- 15:34SPEAKER_07: Yeah, exactly.
- 15:34SPEAKER_07: And so uh, I mean, great size, great shot, great stats.
- 15:38SPEAKER_07: I'm I'm all for it.
- 15:39SPEAKER_07: So uh, but you're right, it did come out of nowhere.
- 15:41SPEAKER_07: But let's talk about four guys here, and I'm I'm gonna run through them quickly here with players to watch.
- 15:47SPEAKER_07: These are guys that Texas Tech isn't necessarily gonna get, but we are in the running and we're deep in the running for these players.
- 15:55SPEAKER_07: So I'm gonna name them off right here.
- 15:57SPEAKER_07: One of which we mentioned last time we talked to y'all, which was uh Fardos Amack, the guy from Utah Valley State.
- 16:04SPEAKER_07: He's a six foot eleven, two hundred and forty-five-pound um big man, averaged 19 and 14 last year, 43 from the three-point line, 71 from the free throw line.
- 16:15SPEAKER_07: Um, he's one of the most highly coveted transfers in the portal right now.
- 16:19SPEAKER_07: And to be honest, dude, I'm like 90 sure he's coming to Texas Tech.
- 16:23SPEAKER_09: I I I all I gotta say, what I all I know about this guy is from your meme game.
- 16:28SPEAKER_09: I've really enjoyed the memes you have brought for this man, especially when it comes to tortillas and stuff.
- 16:35SPEAKER_09: So yeah, I know I I'm with you, man.
- 16:38SPEAKER_09: The vibes definitely seem feel like they're there, especially he's he's putting out some crypt, like very cryptic tweets that are like, okay, come this has to be Texas Tech.
- 16:46SPEAKER_09: So you don't just tweet, I love you love some tortillas, and not go to tortilla tech as the people call us.
- 16:53SPEAKER_09: Come on.
- 16:54SPEAKER_07: Listen, he tweeted, I I look forward to some warm weather, warmer weather, yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_07: And listen, in his he put his top five out there.
- 17:01SPEAKER_07: It was Washington, Iowa, Gonzaga, Texas Tech, and Texas.
- 17:06SPEAKER_07: Which uh, which two of those schools have warm weather?
- 17:09SPEAKER_07: It's Texas Tech and Texas, okay?
- 17:11SPEAKER_07: And then you look at listen, I I'm kind of a creeper when it comes to portal season.
- 17:16SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna look at this guy, I'm gonna look at this guy's uh Twitter and I'm gonna look at his likes.
- 17:20SPEAKER_07: It's all Texas Tech.
- 17:22SPEAKER_07: He's responding to Texas Tech accounts.
- 17:24SPEAKER_07: This guy's coming to Texas Tech.
- 17:26SPEAKER_07: I mean, I and listen, I'm not an insider or anything, that's not 100%, but I would be so surprised if this guy does not end up in a Texas Tech uniform.
- 17:35SPEAKER_09: Steven sources, trust me.
- 17:37SPEAKER_07: So we're not claiming to be you know, they have insider info over here.
- 17:44SPEAKER_09: Um but uh just just don't tell them about loving winters.
- 17:47SPEAKER_09: Everyone shut up about that, right?
- 17:49SPEAKER_09: Shut up, right?
- 17:50SPEAKER_09: Shut up.
- 17:52SPEAKER_07: It's hot 24-7 in loving Texas.
- 17:55SPEAKER_07: I don't care what you say.
- 17:57SPEAKER_07: No snow, no ice.
- 17:59SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's probably pretty cool compared to you know his Canadian background.
- 18:03SPEAKER_07: My man spent some time in British Columbia growing up, so uh, yeah, it'll probably be a little different, even if it does snow those three days out of the year in Lovey, Texas.
- 18:13SPEAKER_07: But um, yeah, that's the number one guy to watch out for.
- 18:16SPEAKER_07: Um, number two, I'd probably put uh Kendrick Davis right now.
- 18:19SPEAKER_07: He put us in his final seven schools, of which we have joined Memphis, Gonzaga, Kansas, Texas, TCU, Houston, and and us are his uh final seven schools.
- 18:30SPEAKER_07: His decision date apparently is April 22nd.
- 18:33SPEAKER_07: So here in a few days.
- 18:35SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, he's he's as some are regarding the number one transfer in the portal right now.
- 18:41SPEAKER_07: Uh, guard out of SMU.
- 18:43SPEAKER_07: Uh, he's fantastic.
- 18:44SPEAKER_07: He won American Conference Player of the Year last year, averaged 19 and a half points a game, nearly four rebounds, four and a half assists.
- 18:52SPEAKER_07: I mean, he's really good.
- 18:53SPEAKER_07: He's uh and he's a good shooter, he can do it all.
- 18:56SPEAKER_07: So this would be a fantastic ad for Texas Tech.
- 18:59SPEAKER_07: And uh, you know, I I'd love to get him.
- 19:01SPEAKER_09: Shoot, man.
- 19:01SPEAKER_09: Like at 20 22nd in a couple days, uh, he's still only at seven.
- 19:06SPEAKER_09: He's got a lot to narrow down to get to within the next couple days.
- 19:10SPEAKER_07: Well, and it's wild because I think he was like setting dates he was gonna go visit schools, and then all of a sudden he was like, Hey, I'm gonna decide here on the 22nd.
- 19:18SPEAKER_07: We're like, Well, that's like next Saturday, all right.
- 19:22SPEAKER_07: Well, I don't know how you're gonna see all these schools, but here we go.
- 19:25SPEAKER_07: So I I think I think he's getting uh a little bit of NIL uh involvement here, uh, depending on where he goes.
- 19:32SPEAKER_07: I I'm not gonna put Texas Tech very high on where on uh you know who I expect this guy to end up going to, but it would be fantastic.
- 19:42SPEAKER_07: He's uh tweeted some stuff about Texas Tech, you know, looking at Red Raider Nation.
- 19:46SPEAKER_07: Uh I'd and you know, anybody that meets Mark Adams instantly loves the guy, uh, instantly thinks he's a genuine dude.
- 19:53SPEAKER_07: So uh if this guy's looking to win, you know, maybe he considers Texas Tech, but uh he's just a name to watch right now.
- 19:59SPEAKER_09: Yeah, get him on a bus with Mark Adams and the boys in the squad.
- 20:04SPEAKER_09: Exactly.
- 20:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah, get him get him in contact with Bryson Williams and Adonis Arms and tell you how a one-year transfer can do here at Texas Tech.
- 20:12SPEAKER_07: So uh the third guy I want to mention here is Tyreek Key.
- 20:17SPEAKER_07: He is coming in, he is in his final year of eligibility, he's gonna be a one-time transfer, but he already visited Texas Tech, and that's an important thing because once you see the womble, once you see the community, once you see Lubbock, you get a different vibe from it.
- 20:32SPEAKER_07: And it really seemed like he enjoyed his visit.
- 20:34SPEAKER_07: Um, he's down to, I believe, Texas Tech, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Old Miss.
- 20:40SPEAKER_07: Um, he's a six foot three guard, 205 pounds.
- 20:43SPEAKER_07: He's got great size.
- 20:44SPEAKER_07: Um, two-time Mountain Valley conference, all first teamer, averaged 17.2 points per game, uh, five and a half rebounds.
- 20:52SPEAKER_07: Uh, three-pointer kind of dipped in the last couple seasons, but he's had seasons where he shot really well from three-point.
- 20:59SPEAKER_07: So um, this would be a great pickup.
- 21:01SPEAKER_07: He would be an instant offensive difference maker here for Texas Tech.
- 21:05SPEAKER_07: So uh I'd love it if Tyreek Key announced uh his commitment to tech.
- 21:09SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I mean, you hit the nail on the head.
- 21:11SPEAKER_09: I mean, it just it's good to see the guys get through the dust and wobble.
- 21:14SPEAKER_09: I mean, how the hell the hell are you gonna say no after that?
- 21:16SPEAKER_09: You know, it's good to hear that we're the only Texas school in uh consideration for once in that one.
- 21:21SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, apparently I think he I think he grew up in Tennessee.
- 21:24SPEAKER_07: He's coming from Indiana State.
- 21:26SPEAKER_07: I don't know, maybe he likes the Midwest over there a little bit, but um, you know, I obviously he took a visit, so I feel good about it.
- 21:32SPEAKER_07: Uh, we'll see what happens, though.
- 21:34SPEAKER_07: Uh, another guy that kind of came out of nowhere, and this is going to be the final guy I mentioned before we get to our our buddy Joe Goodman, uh, is Norchad O'Mir.
- 21:42SPEAKER_07: He is a junior out of Arkansas State.
- 21:46SPEAKER_07: Um, uh, he listed Texas Tech as one of his final four schools, along with Florida State, Miami, and Georgetown.
- 21:53SPEAKER_07: Uh, he already took a visit to Miami.
- 21:55SPEAKER_07: Apparently, Florida State was already uh he already visited there too.
- 21:59SPEAKER_07: He set up a Visit to Georgetown.
- 22:01SPEAKER_07: And according to Jeff Goodman, he may visit Texas Tech in the last week of April.
- 22:05SPEAKER_07: So we may not see a decision until May for him.
- 22:08SPEAKER_07: But um after watching, I kid you not, after watching 10 minutes of video highlights on this guy, I would absolutely love it if he came to Texas Tech.
- 22:18SPEAKER_07: He is an enforcer on the inside.
- 22:20SPEAKER_07: He's only six foot seven.
- 22:22SPEAKER_07: And I say that, you know, it's basketball term.
- 22:24SPEAKER_07: So only six foot seven, but he's a big man.
- 22:26SPEAKER_07: He's strong as hell, dude.
- 22:28SPEAKER_07: He's 230 pounds.
- 22:29SPEAKER_07: I mean, he averaged almost 18 points a game, 12 and a half rebounds.
- 22:34SPEAKER_07: He's got three years of eligibility left.
- 22:36SPEAKER_07: He's the reigning Sunbelt player of the year.
- 22:38SPEAKER_07: He's everything you want in a transfer.
- 22:41SPEAKER_07: And I mean, I'd love it if we got this guy too.
- 22:44SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that sounds like he fit in perfectly with the no-middle defense, then.
- 22:48SPEAKER_09: I just we we we love ourselves some bullies, you know, some some real physical play.
- 22:52SPEAKER_09: And I'm glad they said that he has his date scheduled for us late.
- 22:57SPEAKER_09: I mean, I it's always good to be the last school they visit.
- 23:00SPEAKER_09: So I would love it if Lubbock was the last stop because that that I think that just makes our makes the decision a little easier towards us as well.
- 23:08SPEAKER_07: Yeah, for sure.
- 23:09SPEAKER_07: Um, there is another guy that people have been kind of keeping under wraps that I'm not gonna mention right here.
- 23:14SPEAKER_07: All I'll say is he's former Big 12, could come back.
- 23:18SPEAKER_07: Uh, you know, could be a uh a guard that that we see, you know, adding Texas tech this year.
- 23:23SPEAKER_07: But um, of all these guys, I'm most confident about Amen.
- 23:26SPEAKER_07: I think he is going to be in the red and black next season.
- 23:30SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, uh obviously I could be eating my words if that doesn't happen, but man, everything that you're seeing social media wise, you're thinking this guy's coming to the Lubbock.
- 23:39SPEAKER_09: Um, so uh with the last guy.
- 23:42SPEAKER_09: Can I go in and spoil the listeners with him?
- 23:44SPEAKER_09: Sure.
- 23:45SPEAKER_09: It's Steven Rodriguez.
- 23:46SPEAKER_09: He uh has four years of eligibility left.
- 23:48SPEAKER_09: He's a former Big 12 player, he's he's he's seen the Big 12 courts, hasn't been on one, but he's other than rushing the court, obviously, but he's he's ready to come and ball and use up his last years of eligibility.
- 24:04SPEAKER_07: Look, I'd like to equate my game to a little bit like a slower Boris Diaw, which if you've ever watched Boris Diab play, my my my fellow Spurs fans, uh, he's already slow.
- 24:16SPEAKER_07: So imagine me being very slow.
- 24:18SPEAKER_07: Uh I'll I'll shoot the three ball here at the pickup game.
- 24:22SPEAKER_07: Uh, I I'll probably knock down about 20% of them, but man, I am not gonna run another rebound.
- 24:28SPEAKER_07: So uh forget it, Mark Adams.
- 24:30SPEAKER_07: I'm not playing defense.
- 24:34SPEAKER_09: You're you're just there where we're in a pinch.
- 24:36SPEAKER_09: We're we're we're 10 points behind, and we need some points on the board immediately.
- 24:39SPEAKER_07: You need a shot five feet beyond the three-point line that's probably gonna airball.
- 24:43SPEAKER_07: I'm your guy.
- 24:45SPEAKER_09: Do you need a guy that's gonna fall over as soon as a big guy touches me?
- 24:49SPEAKER_09: I got your guy, I'm your guy.
- 24:51SPEAKER_07: I pretend like I can grind down low.
- 24:53SPEAKER_07: I can't do that shit.
- 24:54SPEAKER_09: I can't grind, coach.
- 24:57SPEAKER_07: No, luckily for both me and Mark Adams, I am not considering Texas Tech in my final list of schools to use my eligibility, but but oh my god, man, so much is going on with the transfer portal.
- 25:12SPEAKER_07: Obviously, we'll update y'all as that goes on.
- 25:14SPEAKER_07: Now that we're back on the grind here at Talk and Tech Pod, we're here having a great time.
- 25:18SPEAKER_07: Tristan, you just happy to be back, man.
- 25:21SPEAKER_09: I am, man.
- 25:22SPEAKER_09: And this is a fun new segment to get going.
- 25:23SPEAKER_09: It's gonna be nice to kind of talk about things other than uh just just numbers and the sports and how games win.
- 25:29SPEAKER_09: It's kind of fun to just break it down with other with other big 12 fans.
- 25:33SPEAKER_07: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:34SPEAKER_07: So let's send you on over to that interview with our good buddy Joe Goodman for the third time.
- 25:39SPEAKER_07: Here we go.
- 25:39SPEAKER_07: Here's Joe Goodman.
- 25:43SPEAKER_07: All right, we are here with our good buddy Joe Goodman.
- 25:46SPEAKER_07: He is the host of the Bear Den podcast, he is a contributor to our daily bears, and he is the first ever three-time guest of the talk and tech podcast.
- 25:57SPEAKER_07: Joe Goodman, what is up, buddy?
- 25:59SPEAKER_10: Not much, man.
- 26:00SPEAKER_10: Just happy here, uh, enjoying uh my first talk and tech pod three Pete.
- 26:05SPEAKER_10: I feel like uh Prime Kobe right now.
- 26:08SPEAKER_07: Hey man, you look like Prime Kobe right now.
- 26:12SPEAKER_10: It's uncanny.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: No doubt that it does.
- 26:17SPEAKER_10: It's I can tell that you guys are upping your game because the last time I was on, I think you had a uh a Liberty Bowl champs shirt on, and now I mean, and as elite as a Liberty Bowl championship shirt is right now, Steven, you're rocking the 2019 men's basketball conference champion shirt.
- 26:38SPEAKER_07: You know, the the shirt used to hurt me this past year because I knew who was the coach of the 2019 team, so I didn't wear it as often as I normally would, but after everything that transpired with us, you know, obviously kicking his butt this whole season and you know, Texas Tech having a great basketball year, I'm fine with wearing it again.
- 26:57SPEAKER_07: I remember the Tariq Owens and Jared Culvers.
- 26:59SPEAKER_07: I don't remember who even coached that team, to be honest with you.
- 27:02SPEAKER_10: We learned the new girl you're bringing to the dance now, is is is pretty good looking.
- 27:06SPEAKER_10: Oh, she's hotter.
- 27:08SPEAKER_07: He's got Mark Adams has great hair, man.
- 27:10SPEAKER_07: I'll tell you that.
- 27:11SPEAKER_09: He does, dude.
- 27:13SPEAKER_09: I've I've I look like that at 70.
- 27:16SPEAKER_09: Uh he's like what 70?
- 27:18SPEAKER_09: 65.
- 27:18SPEAKER_06: Take it easy.
- 27:19SPEAKER_09: He's 65.
- 27:22SPEAKER_10: But he's got the he's still got the he's he's still got the boxer moves, yeah.
- 27:26SPEAKER_09: Oh, yeah.
- 27:27SPEAKER_09: I don't I wouldn't I wouldn't square up with with with Mr.
- 27:30SPEAKER_09: Adams, but he if I look as like him at our at his age, I'm in.
- 27:34SPEAKER_09: I'm it.
- 27:34SPEAKER_09: I mean he looks better than me now.
- 27:36SPEAKER_07: No, absolutely a lot of people, yeah.
- 27:39SPEAKER_07: A lot of people look better than you now, but it's a low bar.
- 27:43SPEAKER_07: Very low bar.
- 27:44SPEAKER_07: Um, no, we're not here to talk about Mark Adams, though.
- 27:47SPEAKER_07: We are here for our first edition of our offseason series, The New Big 12.
- 27:52SPEAKER_07: We got this idea from a very smart guy out there.
- 27:55SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, we completely stole it.
- 27:57SPEAKER_07: His name is Joe Goodman.
- 27:58SPEAKER_07: I don't know if you've heard of him.
- 28:00SPEAKER_07: Uh but no, we were so you came up with this idea for our Daily Bears.
- 28:05SPEAKER_07: It's a 12-part series where you're just talking about the new Big 12, talking to some people, members of a you know, fans of a team from the new Big 12, each team, and just discussing how you think the conference is gonna go.
- 28:19SPEAKER_07: I thought it was a great idea, and I thought, hey, let's make it into a podcast series.
- 28:23SPEAKER_07: So I'm very grateful to you for letting us use your idea.
- 28:27SPEAKER_10: Absolutely, man.
- 28:28SPEAKER_10: You're you're elevating it into a new medium.
- 28:31SPEAKER_09: It helps those of us that can't read, Joe.
- 28:33SPEAKER_09: So that's just our thing.
- 28:34SPEAKER_09: We like to but as I learned when you were getting audio, you you can read.
- 28:40SPEAKER_09: I I can, I was shoving in Steven's face.
- 28:43SPEAKER_07: So I don't think he, I think that was all a bunch of bull.
- 28:46SPEAKER_07: I don't think you can actually read.
- 28:49SPEAKER_09: Well, Joe, I mean, obviously, before before we ask any questions, how excited are you that Baylor's finally making the step up to the P5?
- 28:57SPEAKER_09: Um, I hate you.
- 29:00SPEAKER_10: Um, you know, we we are a school that is, and this is actually gonna be one of my answers, maybe to one of your questions.
- 29:09SPEAKER_10: There's there's there is a resiliency about Baylor that we no matter what happens to us, we just refuse to die.
- 29:17SPEAKER_10: Um, partially thanks to our ability to have the governor of Texas in the 90s.
- 29:22SPEAKER_10: But uh luckily, we unlike some people like TCU, never had to walk in the doldrums of the non-power five.
- 29:30SPEAKER_07: Yes, y'all have always been one of the top you know competitors over here.
- 29:36SPEAKER_09: Um, charter member, charter member left here in the the new Big 12 with the charter members kind of.
- 29:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you know, we can all pull up our bridges a little bit higher, you know.
- 29:47SPEAKER_08: All of us charter members that are left over, yeah.
- 29:50SPEAKER_07: You know, and to be honest, I'm just happy us old money, oh old money over here, red raiders and baylor bears.
- 29:58SPEAKER_07: But I guess that I mean that just kind of leads into our first question for you.
- 30:03SPEAKER_07: Uh, perception versus performance of the new Big 12 as a as a whole.
- 30:07SPEAKER_07: How do you think the new Big 12 will be perceived nationally, really, to everybody else?
- 30:13SPEAKER_07: Because I I've seen a lot of negativity, but what do you think uh will you know be perceived the new Big 12?
- 30:20SPEAKER_10: Well, first and foremost, I think uh the first part of that question is the fact that football is king, so it doesn't it, you know, we're gonna be perceived as the best basketball conference in the country, but that won't matter in like the grand scheme of how good is X conference.
- 30:34SPEAKER_10: Uh I I think that uh until we win a national championship in football, and I think it's doable with the teams that we have moving forward, until we win a national title, or maybe even go to one, just actually win a playoff game, something that Oklahoma has not been able to do for us.
- 30:50SPEAKER_10: Um, sheesh, come on, come on, Oklahoma.
- 30:55SPEAKER_10: Uh, but until until we really raise up a national championship, I think from the fan perspective, we're always going to be perceived in that fifth spot of the power five.
- 31:07SPEAKER_10: I think legitimately we're a better football conference than both the Pac-12 and the ACC as we stand today, with you know the new schools coming in and Texas and Oklahoma leaving.
- 31:16SPEAKER_10: I think we're the third best football conference out there.
- 31:18SPEAKER_10: I don't think the average fan thinks that for whatever reason, because of just the like the crap that's been around the Big 12 for 15 years now, and the fact that ESPN is never going to give us the benefit of the doubt.
- 31:31SPEAKER_10: They have a vested interest in in boosting up the FEC.
- 31:35SPEAKER_10: Fox and ESPN both have a vested interest in boosting up the Big Ten.
- 31:39SPEAKER_10: Um, and because of the relationships that uh and the age in certain schools that are in both the Pac 12 and the ACC, they're gonna be a little bit more, you know, apt to talk about those conferences more.
- 31:50SPEAKER_10: So I think we're gonna start off in probably that like bottom spot.
- 31:53SPEAKER_10: People are gonna be like, this is a little bit better than the AAC used to be.
- 31:58SPEAKER_10: Um, is this really a power five school?
- 32:00SPEAKER_10: The same stuff that you see on Twitter all the time right now.
- 32:02SPEAKER_10: But I think we will have a level of continued success in football.
- 32:07SPEAKER_10: And if we are able to get over that hump within the next five to ten years and and bring home some serious hardware on the football side of things, I think that could absolutely change the perception of the conference as a whole.
- 32:19SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, I think what you're saying is completely correct.
- 32:22SPEAKER_07: The networks run college sports for the most part these days.
- 32:25SPEAKER_07: I mean, uh, they decide who they want to spotlight.
- 32:29SPEAKER_07: I mean, ESPN and the SEC have just this love that uh, you know, none of us other, you know, schools and other conferences are gonna experience because it just is what it is.
- 32:40SPEAKER_07: And, you know, the the money, the money part of it is interesting because we're gonna make less because our two biggest brands are leaving.
- 32:50SPEAKER_07: And you know, that that's not that part of it isn't great, but I think the overall performance of what we are gonna put out on the field is gonna be the same, if not better, with the four schools coming in and uh UTNOU leaving.
- 33:05SPEAKER_07: What do you think about that?
- 33:06SPEAKER_10: 100%.
- 33:07SPEAKER_10: I keep saying this to some friends of mine that that are in other Big 12 schools that might not be as like big or have as big a donors as maybe a Dusty Womble or a Drayton McClain or a Paul Foster, like our schools have.
- 33:20SPEAKER_10: And one of the things that I keep saying is like in the current landscape of NIL, in the future landscape of you know how much money the conferences are gonna be able to make, which directly it impacts like how much you can pay coaches, the improvements that you can do to your uh your facilities, at the end of the day, it's the same number of recruits every single year.
- 33:38SPEAKER_10: So there's you know, Alabama can only recruit so many kids, Oklahoma can only recruit so many kids.
- 33:44SPEAKER_10: Uh so at the end of the day, like the same number of kids every year are gonna be playing football.
- 33:49SPEAKER_10: I think the deviation of stars and talent isn't going to change.
- 33:54SPEAKER_10: So if you're good today, if you're able to recruit today at a high level, which most of the schools in the Big 12 are top 40 recruiting schools, you're gonna be able to continue to do that.
- 34:04SPEAKER_10: And I don't think that there's gonna be some major drop-off in talent that we have.
- 34:09SPEAKER_10: What I think the Big 12 has going for it right now, that other conferences may not, is at our top in mid-tier.
- 34:16SPEAKER_10: I think we're starting to see coaches get hired that can develop.
- 34:19SPEAKER_10: So we're gonna start seeing like a number 40 recruiting class actually turn kids into a top 25 recruiting class.
- 34:26SPEAKER_10: Um, so it it's it's all about um what you have available to you, what the perception of recruits have on you.
- 34:34SPEAKER_10: And I just I don't think that that's gonna change enough to where we're gonna see this fall off and be some second-tier level conference.
- 34:42SPEAKER_09: That that's a great point, you know.
- 34:43SPEAKER_09: I I don't think we we think about recruiting as as much as we should, or at least rationally, like we should.
- 34:48SPEAKER_09: Um, I think that the kids that are going to Alabama, Tex Tech and Baylor really weren't gonna get in the first place, right?
- 34:54SPEAKER_09: We're not getting them now, so that's not really a concern, of course, except for the random jewel you'll get here and there.
- 35:00SPEAKER_09: But yeah, I think you're absolutely right.
- 35:01SPEAKER_09: I don't think a kid is not considering a Baylor or a Texas tech because UT and OU aren't in it anymore.
- 35:07SPEAKER_09: I don't know if that was really a factor before.
- 35:09SPEAKER_09: Um, so I'm with you.
- 35:11SPEAKER_09: I I think recruiting probably stays steady.
- 35:13SPEAKER_09: I don't really see that changing much because I mean UT and OU, were they really struggling getting their players anyway?
- 35:18SPEAKER_09: I mean, I know they use recruiting as an excuse leaving the Big 12, but honestly, what is gonna change in that sense?
- 35:23SPEAKER_09: Yes, U T and OU have okay.
- 35:26SPEAKER_09: Go go on, go on.
- 35:27SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I was just about to say that.
- 35:28SPEAKER_07: Texas and OU already get top 10 recruiting classes every year.
- 35:30SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, what are they gonna get top five recruiting classes every year?
- 35:34SPEAKER_07: I mean, they I mean, it doesn't make sense to me when people you know use the recruiting argument of a reason they left, they left for more money.
- 35:41SPEAKER_07: That's why they left.
- 35:42SPEAKER_10: It's the bag, yeah, it's the bag, and I don't blame them one bit.
- 35:46SPEAKER_10: No, I don't either.
- 35:47SPEAKER_10: I I get it, but I'm still gonna clown sex.
- 35:51SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's just the state of college sports, it's all about money now, and so um, you know, with that was strictly a financial decision in on UTNOU's part, but recruiting-wise, you uh you're not gonna make me believe that UTNOU left to get better recruits, they already do that.
- 36:06SPEAKER_09: A shame, a shame with uh you well, while we're on the the money part, uh we're probably spending a little too much time on this question than we thought we would, uh, but it's the first episode.
- 36:13SPEAKER_09: We're gonna we're so we're gonna flush these out a little more than we probably would.
- 36:15SPEAKER_09: Um, so yeah, with the money thing part, you know, obviously you know why the institutions would leave for the money, but I think a sad part you see that with with fans is like we there's this new movement where the fans care how much the institutions make, like we're like that that matters as much as having fun and and seeing your team uh win games and stuff.
- 36:32SPEAKER_09: I never I just don't really understand like, oh, we're gonna get so much money.
- 36:35SPEAKER_09: Whenever you're not gonna see a dime, because that was like the one thing a UT uh fan heckled me with whenever we beat them in Austin.
- 36:42SPEAKER_09: I was like, have fun in the SEC, you know, haha.
- 36:44SPEAKER_09: And they was like, Oh, you can't wait, wait till you see our paycheck.
- 36:46SPEAKER_09: I'm like, what do you can do with your hat, bro?
- 36:48SPEAKER_09: I mean, seriously, it's such a problem.
- 36:50SPEAKER_09: Seriously.
- 36:51SPEAKER_10: Yeah, you know, I and to be honest with you, I've I haven't seen it as much from Oklahoma fans as I have from Texas fans.
- 36:56SPEAKER_10: And it's been it's not even just this year.
- 36:58SPEAKER_10: Texas has always talked about how much money their athletic department makes, and it's almost it's almost laughable.
- 37:03SPEAKER_10: Like, I uh so when they lost to Kansas this year, I I dropped a meme on Twitter that actually did quite well.
- 37:09SPEAKER_10: And I had I Googled, I did some some GDP research, the gross domestic product, and I found that there was like three small countries, might have been two, that Texas's athletic budget is larger than the entire country's GDP.
- 37:22SPEAKER_10: And so I I made this meme, and it was a picture of Chris Oconti next to a picture of the Jayhawk, and it said who would who would win in a battle?
- 37:30SPEAKER_10: Um, an athletic department with a with a a budget larger than multiple countries GDP or one rocky chalky boy.
- 37:37SPEAKER_07: Uh well means classic.
- 37:41SPEAKER_07: I'll take I'll take any I'll take any Kansas over Texas meme anytime, anywhere.
- 37:46SPEAKER_07: I don't care.
- 37:47SPEAKER_07: I'll take it uh years from now.
- 37:49SPEAKER_07: I Texas could win the next six, and I'll take hey, remember when Kansas beat Texas twice.
- 37:56SPEAKER_10: I do love that Cyclone Larry has kept up his bit of uh of every single day posting good morning with the uh the Texas Texas screw the NARC that reported him for spam.
- 38:07SPEAKER_07: I know it always happens, though.
- 38:09SPEAKER_07: It's happened.
- 38:10SPEAKER_07: This is like the third time, he'll get his account back eventually, but he's gotta use the disappear again one day, yeah.
- 38:16SPEAKER_07: For sure.
- 38:17SPEAKER_07: But um, let's move on because I know we we have a lot to say about UT and OU, but you know, we have 12 parts of this, Tristan, for you and me to crap on him.
- 38:25SPEAKER_07: So yeah, we'll we'll move on um to the next question back to Baylor here, because we do have a Baylor guest on.
- 38:32SPEAKER_07: How do you believe Baylor's athletic programs specifically are gonna fare in the new Big 12?
- 38:38SPEAKER_10: So, like I'll give you like a quick rundown.
- 38:40SPEAKER_10: I think I think football along with Oklahoma State, tech, um, and then I think probably one of the new four are going to be, I think, the the standard for football moving forward.
- 38:54SPEAKER_10: Iowa State's gonna hang around, but I think um I think Baylor's gonna be up there in like that top four echelon.
- 39:01SPEAKER_10: He's definitely in the top half of the conference in football.
- 39:03SPEAKER_10: Men's basketball, I don't think we're going anywhere anytime soon.
- 39:06SPEAKER_10: I think it's us, Kansas, and you guys, of course, that are gonna be probably for the next five, five years to a decade, gonna be running this conference from a men's basketball standpoint.
- 39:14SPEAKER_10: Women's basketball, I think we take a little bit of a step back from what we have had historically.
- 39:19SPEAKER_10: That's not just because Mulkey went to LSU.
- 39:22SPEAKER_10: I think it's also because, as a whole, the conference has spent years trying to catch up to what Mulkey was.
- 39:27SPEAKER_10: There was a void when AM left, right?
- 39:29SPEAKER_10: Like AM was really good at women's basketball.
- 39:31SPEAKER_10: When they left, there was a massive void in a in a huge gap between Baylor and everybody else.
- 39:36SPEAKER_10: Now, schools like Iowa State, Kansas State, Texas Tech have really elevated where they are in the women's basketball front.
- 39:43SPEAKER_10: So it's just natural, I think, that we'll take a step back there, especially including four new schools that I think are going to be spending a lot of money and really committing to sports to compete right away.
- 39:53SPEAKER_10: Um, but I think overall, like you include like track, we're gonna still be really, really good.
- 39:58SPEAKER_10: And we're only gonna be pushed harder by a uh program like Houston joining.
- 40:02SPEAKER_10: Um, we're pretty good at golf, we're one of the best in the country in tennis.
- 40:06SPEAKER_10: Um, so I think I think our bellwether sports that are generally good every single year are gonna continue to be that way.
- 40:12SPEAKER_10: Um, and I think I think football is gonna be able to hang around with kind of the the original charter member Big 12 schools, I think are gonna be really holding their own.
- 40:22SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and I think this this applies with pretty much every new Big 12 school.
- 40:26SPEAKER_07: If you're keeping your coaches, and this really applies for you know football, basketball.
- 40:30SPEAKER_07: I'm talking specifically, if you're keeping your great coaches around, you're gonna be fine.
- 40:34SPEAKER_07: And Baylor right now has two fantastic coaches at the helm in both football and basketball.
- 40:40SPEAKER_07: So, you know, you keep those guys around, you're gonna be just fine.
- 40:44SPEAKER_09: Yeah, and all this is I know it's probably gonna be say more for the you of age pod, but like what as the sequence of events that have happened that we got Dana Holgerson coming back to the Big 12.
- 40:56SPEAKER_09: How did that happen?
- 40:58SPEAKER_09: I mean, he's doing great.
- 40:59SPEAKER_10: First time he goes back to Morgantown, I cannot wait to watch that game.
- 41:02SPEAKER_09: Oh, it'll be a fantastic game.
- 41:04SPEAKER_07: It's gonna be great.
- 41:06SPEAKER_07: You know, everybody's talking about when you T and AM play each other again.
- 41:09SPEAKER_07: How about we talk about when Dana Holgerson comes back to Morgantown?
- 41:12SPEAKER_09: The Dana Bull, the Red Bull, uh, just fine.
- 41:20SPEAKER_09: Yeah, no, no.
- 41:20SPEAKER_10: He chugs, he chugs like he chugs those things like uh Saban eats little Debbie's.
- 41:24SPEAKER_07: So yeah, Saban does love his little Debbies.
- 41:28SPEAKER_07: Who knows?
- 41:29SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, I I think you're I think your overall sentiment about Baylor sports.
- 41:32SPEAKER_07: I I mean they've been good in the Big 12 right now.
- 41:35SPEAKER_07: If people think the conference is gonna regress, I mean they're gonna stay up there, you know.
- 41:39SPEAKER_07: Um, and and y'all have the support, at least, you know, more so than other schools, um, in terms of like your athletic department is 100% behind y'all winning.
- 41:50SPEAKER_07: Uh, you know, they they go out and hire the right people.
- 41:52SPEAKER_07: Your your athletic director is on one right now, on on coaching hire.
- 41:57SPEAKER_07: So um, I think I think Baylor's I think that's a core thing, right?
- 42:01SPEAKER_10: It's it's like top-down leadership.
- 42:03SPEAKER_10: And there's three schools specifically right now in the new in the new version Big 12 that I think are uh a core reason why the conference stuck together, and B a core reason why like these three schools are going to stay competitive in almost everything, and that's Mac Rhodes at Baylor, Kirby Ho Cut in Lubbeck at Tech, and uh Jamie Pollard at Iowa State.
- 42:21SPEAKER_10: Like those guys have really fostered like a culture in their athletic department.
- 42:26SPEAKER_10: And you saw that with like Mulkey going to LSU, like a lot of the backstory that I've heard there is a lot like we are all in line as coaches in an athletic department.
- 42:34SPEAKER_10: And if you're not in line, then here's the door you can go, and that's what happened.
- 42:36SPEAKER_10: And he was more than happy to say, like, no, like I'm the boss, this is the way things are going to be done.
- 42:41SPEAKER_10: Um, and you get into trouble when your athletic directors aren't like that.
- 42:46SPEAKER_10: That's how you end up like Tennessee or Texas or Michigan, right?
- 42:49SPEAKER_09: So that's a great point.
- 42:51SPEAKER_09: I I think I really like the the point that you made that these these schools are very dedicated to their sports because I think I think you're exactly right.
- 42:58SPEAKER_09: I think that's probably why the Big 12 stuck together because there's just another level of commitment to these programs that's probably not really.
- 43:04SPEAKER_09: I mean, I might be naive to this, but uh probably just really isn't found in like ACC or the Pac 12.
- 43:10SPEAKER_09: I just don't know if the sporting commitment is quite there, like it is on the coast.
- 43:18SPEAKER_10: Yeah, no, not at all.
- 43:19SPEAKER_10: Like, I I'll never, you know, I've heard a couple of OU fans talk about one of the thing that they're most excited about to leave the Big 12 for and go to the SEC is that like Mississippi State, they have like a huge stadium with big tradition in their bells, and like, oh miss, like it's always packed.
- 43:34SPEAKER_10: You're gonna have like 60, 70,000 people there at every game, like however big their stadium is.
- 43:38SPEAKER_10: Like you're talking about hundred almost a hundred thousand seat stadiums, whereas in the Big Twelve, like you got some smaller stuff, uh like slightly more apathetic in some of their fan bases.
- 43:48SPEAKER_10: But yeah, like go look at the go look at the ACC and Pac 12 like at kickoff in their stadiums, like they just don't care.
- 43:55SPEAKER_10: Yeah, you hit the nail on the head.
- 43:57SPEAKER_07: Well, they have to go to the beach, you know.
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: Oh my god, I love that argument.
- 44:02SPEAKER_06: It's what do you mean, Joe?
- 44:04SPEAKER_06: It's 85 and sunny out.
- 44:06SPEAKER_06: Of course they're going to the beach and not the Stanford game.
- 44:09SPEAKER_10: Oh, is that just was that Stu Mandel?
- 44:12SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 44:12SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that was our buddy Stewie.
- 44:14SPEAKER_06: He's always a joy on football.
- 44:17SPEAKER_09: Stu's up and down.
- 44:19SPEAKER_07: He he wasn't too bad after you know, he kind of got back on the Big 12 train a little bit.
- 44:24SPEAKER_07: Uh, but when that whole when when UTNOU announced they were leaving, he was brutal to follow for all.
- 44:30SPEAKER_09: Yeah, he had a heart on for dying Big 12, that is for sure.
- 44:33SPEAKER_09: He really did.
- 44:34SPEAKER_09: He did.
- 44:35SPEAKER_07: He was all in, but um he had the article already written.
- 44:38SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:39SPEAKER_07: Oh, absolutely.
- 44:40SPEAKER_07: Um, but you know, with this new Big 12, we have these four new members coming in U of H, BYU, UCF, and Cincinnati.
- 44:50SPEAKER_07: For you, did you like these additions?
- 44:53SPEAKER_07: What would you have looked at any other schools, or were you happy with these four that we decided to add?
- 44:59SPEAKER_10: So I have been a huge avid advocate of BYU, Cincinnati, and UCF for years, especially Cincinnati.
- 45:04SPEAKER_10: Like, I always thought Cincinnati made a ton of sense just as a natural rival to West Virginia.
- 45:08SPEAKER_10: I always felt like just as like a fellow conference man, I was like, they need somebody close to them.
- 45:12SPEAKER_10: Cincinnati's right there, it makes sense.
- 45:14SPEAKER_10: I really wanted Louisville back in the day.
- 45:16SPEAKER_10: I was pissed off when the ACC jumped on them.
- 45:19SPEAKER_10: The one school that I haven't wanted in our conference, and I still like am on the fence about is Houston.
- 45:26SPEAKER_10: Just because, from like uh a market standpoint, like I know markets on TV don't matter as much as they used to anymore, but like the Big 12 plays in Houston already.
- 45:35SPEAKER_10: Like, we don't we don't need a school that that gives us that market, like Baylor, Tech, um TCU, like even though they're in Fort Worth, like all of their games are always going to be on in Houston.
- 45:46SPEAKER_10: We recruit well already out of the Houston market.
- 45:49SPEAKER_10: Um, and I think all it does is elevate a school that's going to be competitive to us on the recruiting trail.
- 45:55SPEAKER_10: What I really wanted to see was Memphis.
- 45:56SPEAKER_10: I thought that they I I had heard that there was like a strong commitment from FedEx uh to support them on a monetary front.
- 46:04SPEAKER_10: I thought they were kind of an up and coming fun team.
- 46:07SPEAKER_10: Um, and it was like, hey, bring me as much barbecue as you possibly can.
- 46:12SPEAKER_10: Like, I'm never gonna turn down another barbecue school.
- 46:14SPEAKER_10: Um, so like I was I was big on Memphis joining.
- 46:17SPEAKER_10: Um, I would have been cool to try to go poach um from the Pac-12 just to see if you could get a callback from Arizona, Arizona State, maybe maybe a Utah if they're not happy, or even bringing Colorado back in the fold if they think that they made the wrong move.
- 46:32SPEAKER_10: Um, but I think overall they made the choice of the best schools that were available.
- 46:37SPEAKER_10: Like, I as much as I would have like for the reasons I gave about Houston, I think Houston was probably the better pick just from a performance standpoint across the board in their athletic department.
- 46:48SPEAKER_10: Um, they're flashier, they're more well known, they have a history from the Southwest Conference.
- 46:52SPEAKER_10: Um, you know, on a national media, you know, point of view, they're a known commodity, even though they've been wandering the non-power five wilderness for as long as they have.
- 47:02SPEAKER_10: Um, but the I think the one that I think is the most unique and that I'm most excited about is BYU, because they have a global following.
- 47:11SPEAKER_10: And when we're talking like streaming rights, which is where I think a lot of the money is going to go in a lot of the negotiations in the future.
- 47:17SPEAKER_10: When you're talking about a school like BYU and the fan base that they have on the global scale, I think that's gonna be a huge bargaining chip for us.
- 47:25SPEAKER_10: So that's the one I think uh is the most intriguing to me.
- 47:28SPEAKER_09: Dude, just just ask just ask Steven how long I've been on the bit VYU to the Big 12 train.
- 47:33SPEAKER_09: I've been on this train for years.
- 47:35SPEAKER_09: I I was like since like the Jimmer days a long time, man.
- 47:40SPEAKER_09: Like I'll I was straight up.
- 47:43SPEAKER_09: Let's just go to 11 teams.
- 47:44SPEAKER_09: It's fine.
- 47:45SPEAKER_09: Like, just add BYU because they're the clear addition right now, man.
- 47:49SPEAKER_09: And I really I really like your takes.
- 47:50SPEAKER_09: The Houston one's interesting for sure, because obviously, as Texas schools, they're the ones that we're gonna be talking about the most.
- 47:56SPEAKER_09: So it's it's it's interesting to grab your take on that.
- 47:59SPEAKER_10: Yeah, I mean, it you know, and it's nothing against their fan base or anything like that, it's just like it's like purely from like a business point of view.
- 48:06SPEAKER_10: Like, how can my school be the most successful on the field?
- 48:10SPEAKER_10: Houston being there lowers that opportunity.
- 48:13SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and I think I think there was something to it with keeping a little bit of Texas because obviously the Longhorns now leaving to the SEC, AM and LSU all own recruiting in Houston.
- 48:26SPEAKER_07: You got to keep somewhat of Texas intact if you're the Big 12.
- 48:30SPEAKER_07: And I think that was kind of a move, you know, with adding the Cougars, but also they have a massive enrollment there, and they have a lot of room to grow as an athletic uh program, you know, Houston.
- 48:43SPEAKER_07: And I think that's the same reason we added UCF as well.
- 48:46SPEAKER_07: Massive enrollment.
- 48:47SPEAKER_07: I mean, a lot of a lot huge alumni base from both of those schools that, you know, possible donors to add to growing uh, you know, the brand and everything like that.
- 48:58SPEAKER_07: So I think they saw Houston, they saw UCF, and uh I, you know, BYU is already there, like you mentioned, Cincinnati with the recent success and everything like that.
- 49:07SPEAKER_07: You know, I think those were all great opportunities, but uh yeah, you your reasoning for adding all of them were were great.
- 49:14SPEAKER_09: Yeah, you're buying a lot of fans.
- 49:18SPEAKER_09: Yeah, for sure.
- 49:20SPEAKER_09: Like like you're saying with the enrollment enrollment and alumni base.
- 49:23SPEAKER_10: Yeah, I'm fully prepared for UCF to become like the new most annoying group on the block.
- 49:28SPEAKER_10: Yeah, I mean, they're gonna be they're like West Virginia, they're just kind of out there, and you know, but and there's so many more of them, and they're so loud.
- 49:36SPEAKER_10: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:37SPEAKER_09: I get it though, man.
- 49:38SPEAKER_09: They gotta be loud in their situation, yeah, because otherwise no one's gonna hear them.
- 49:42SPEAKER_10: What they would real quick, I I do love I do love the poetic justice that South Florida was was blocked UCF from joining the big east when the big east was expanding.
- 49:55SPEAKER_10: So so UCF, they were a newer school, their programs weren't very, and South Florida was like, we want nothing, nothing to do with you in the big east.
- 50:01SPEAKER_10: So the big east collapses, and now UCF is the one that's caught a lifeline into the power five, and South Florida is about to just like the melt away into the Atlantic Ocean.
- 50:11SPEAKER_07: It's crazy what it's crazy what one national championship can do for you, you know.
- 50:17SPEAKER_09: Screw that, bro.
- 50:21SPEAKER_07: UCF will always be my national champions.
- 50:23SPEAKER_07: And what will there you go, Joe?
- 50:25SPEAKER_07: You're worried about hardware, undefeated, baby.
- 50:28SPEAKER_07: What is it, 2017, 2016?
- 50:30SPEAKER_07: There go knights, baby.
- 50:32SPEAKER_10: Yeah, we just won't talk about we won't talk about their their fiesta bowl after the 2013 season.
- 50:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, I don't I don't know what you're talking about, but but other than that such a long drive home.
- 50:41SPEAKER_07: Oh man, I can't imagine.
- 50:43SPEAKER_07: Uh and and I'm glad, you know, I'm c I'm glad and I'm not glad you brought up USF because you know, we we recently lost a bowl game to them not too long ago.
- 50:51SPEAKER_07: Um it's been a while now.
- 50:54SPEAKER_07: You know, those were those were the dark days.
- 50:56SPEAKER_07: Hopefully, we're on the up and up.
- 50:57SPEAKER_09: That's Cliff, two coaches ago.
- 51:00SPEAKER_07: Uh yikes.
- 51:02SPEAKER_09: Now you sound like Baylor.
- 51:04SPEAKER_07: Hey, two coaches ago.
- 51:07SPEAKER_07: Um, but with these four schools, this is just kind of a fun question I wanted to ask you.
- 51:12SPEAKER_07: Provo, Houston, Cincinnati, and Orlando.
- 51:16SPEAKER_07: Rank these four cities in terms of what are the most like interesting to the least interesting for you.
- 51:22SPEAKER_10: So, I mean, this is a unique question for me because like I'm born and raised and currently live in Houston.
- 51:27SPEAKER_10: Um, it's my hometown.
- 51:29SPEAKER_10: I love Houston to death.
- 51:31SPEAKER_10: Uh, but it's it's a little bit of a cop out to rank that number one.
- 51:34SPEAKER_10: I think number one on most interesting is definitely Provo.
- 51:38SPEAKER_10: Um, just I'm dying to go there.
- 51:40SPEAKER_10: It looks gorgeous.
- 51:41SPEAKER_10: I we talked before this, like about you know, like I'm not a huge college baseball fan, but their their college baseball stadium is just this immaculate thing built into the mountains with an amazing view.
- 51:51SPEAKER_10: So I want to go to a college baseball game there.
- 51:54SPEAKER_10: Um, I want to go out there and and and watch a football game.
- 51:57SPEAKER_10: Their fan base from everything that I've heard is extremely die hard.
- 52:01SPEAKER_10: It's a loud place to play, it's a fun place to go.
- 52:03SPEAKER_10: So provo provos up there.
- 52:05SPEAKER_10: Um, and also from like a cultural standpoint, like like it's gonna be it's gotta be a unique experience going somewhere where there's you know, we're used to going and tailgating.
- 52:14SPEAKER_10: Like, if I go to Lubbock, like the first thing I expect is like there's gonna be a 30-pack waiting for me somewhere, like you know, a bottle of whiskey.
- 52:20SPEAKER_10: So, like, I I can't even imagine what it would be like to go to a you know, culturally speaking, a place where it's like I believe they serve milk in the stadium because oh that's weird, yeah.
- 52:30SPEAKER_10: It's weird, but like it's different, right?
- 52:32SPEAKER_10: So it's like a different kind of cultural experience, and I'm into that kind of thing.
- 52:36SPEAKER_10: So, um, so it'd be I think provos up there.
- 52:39SPEAKER_10: Number two for me, I will put Houston, it's one of the most diverse cities in the country.
- 52:43SPEAKER_10: The food scene here is basically like second to none.
- 52:46SPEAKER_10: Like, if you I mean it's this fusion of like what San Antonio has, what New Orleans has, what Texas has, all in kind of one place, plus a huge Asian influence.
- 52:55SPEAKER_10: We have some of the best Vietnamese food you'll ever find.
- 52:58SPEAKER_10: Um, people here I generally find to be really nice.
- 53:00SPEAKER_10: Traffic sucks, uh, the weather kind of sucks most of the year, too.
- 53:05SPEAKER_10: Um, but overall, like if you're looking to visit somewhere and go to a football game, there's so much for you to do here that's outside of just the three hours that you're gonna spend at TDECU Stadium at the University of Houston.
- 53:17SPEAKER_10: Um, third is Orlando for me.
- 53:19SPEAKER_10: They've got Disney World, and that's pretty much it.
- 53:22SPEAKER_10: I've traveled to Orlando a number of times for work.
- 53:24SPEAKER_10: I hate the place, it costs money to do anything anywhere.
- 53:27SPEAKER_10: Like every road I felt like was a toll road.
- 53:30SPEAKER_10: There are children everywhere.
- 53:32SPEAKER_10: I'm a dad, I like my kid, I don't like yours.
- 53:34SPEAKER_10: Um the airport there sucks.
- 53:38SPEAKER_10: Um, but it does have Disney World, so it it's an I put it as three because it'll be an excuse for me when my kid's a few years older to to fly about there, go to a Baylor game, and go to Disney World.
- 53:47SPEAKER_10: That'll be cool.
- 53:48SPEAKER_10: That would be cool, and then last is is Cincinnati, and that's only because Skyline Chile is an abomination.
- 53:55SPEAKER_09: And uh and I skyline chitty is Joe Joe Goodman, Skyline Shitty.
- 54:01SPEAKER_10: My dad is is from Dayton and which is like not far from Cincinnati.
- 54:06SPEAKER_10: Um, and I've been there a couple of times to visit family.
- 54:09SPEAKER_10: It's not a cool place, so one of those Midwest.
- 54:16SPEAKER_10: I love you.
- 54:16SPEAKER_10: Welcome to the conference.
- 54:19SPEAKER_07: Welcome to don't bring your chilling.
- 54:23SPEAKER_09: I think honestly, Joe, I think your order is gonna be the most common order.
- 54:27SPEAKER_09: I I do.
- 54:28SPEAKER_09: I I think I think that's probably the uh what at what most people are gonna to the list, be honest.
- 54:33SPEAKER_09: I really don't think Cincinnati's gonna win any of them unless you're from a midwest, we're unless we're like Iowa State, like a Midwesterner that's like Midwest or die.
- 54:40SPEAKER_09: I don't think anyone's picking Cincinnati.
- 54:42SPEAKER_10: Yeah, I know some I know some Iowa State fans that think a like think Des Moines a big city.
- 54:47SPEAKER_10: So like I could see them be like Cincinnati's awesome.
- 54:50SPEAKER_08: Oh, it's huge.
- 54:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, I mean, um Cincinnati was an interesting ad solely for that Ohio is such a huge recruiting state, and it only had one Power Five conference or one ridiculous, one Power Five team for the longest time, and now Cincinnati is joining the fray after you know their recent football success.
- 55:13SPEAKER_07: But uh yeah, I know nothing about Cincinnati, so I I mean all I know is the chilling, and it's either you love it or you hate it, and so I don't know, man.
- 55:21SPEAKER_07: But everything you said about Orlando is so true.
- 55:23SPEAKER_07: I mean, the weather sucks, it's so crowded all the time, everybody's just there for Disney, and then for most, Disney is a miserable time, and so you know what's good about Orlando.
- 55:35SPEAKER_09: Not even throwing Universal Studios here, guys.
- 55:38SPEAKER_10: Okay, Universal Studios is pretty fun.
- 55:40SPEAKER_10: Okay, I'll give I'll give one thing there.
- 55:44SPEAKER_07: No doubt, no doubt.
- 55:45SPEAKER_07: But um, yeah, so I I think we have four interesting schools coming in.
- 55:49SPEAKER_07: I'm excited about them, even if you know we're not big on the chili and not big on the humidity, but um, you know, I I think your rankings were pretty pretty accurate in terms of that.
- 56:00SPEAKER_07: Back to what we think about the new Big 12 divisions.
- 56:04SPEAKER_07: That is a should I say divisive, uh divisive opinion.
- 56:10SPEAKER_07: Oh, from uh a lot of uh the new Big 12 fans.
- 56:13SPEAKER_07: Some are very anti-divisions, some are pro.
- 56:16SPEAKER_07: I think the I think the majority are pro-divisions.
- 56:19SPEAKER_07: For you, Joe, what do you think about the new Big 12 in in terms of how we should divide the conference?
- 56:26SPEAKER_10: If I was was King Joe sitting in um the future commissioner spot now that thank god Bob Bullsby's leaving, um, I would pick divisions.
- 56:35SPEAKER_10: Like, I'm not married to it.
- 56:36SPEAKER_10: If they don't do divisions, I'm not gonna be one of these people that's like, no, you made the wrong choice.
- 56:40SPEAKER_10: But I like divisions personally, I think it divides things up nicely.
- 56:44SPEAKER_10: I know there's the fear that it could fall into like the old Big 12 North South when like the North was garbage and the south was way too good.
- 56:50SPEAKER_10: But at the end of the day, like if you're a school that doesn't win your division, that means somebody was like clearly better than you.
- 56:57SPEAKER_10: And one thing I hate having to beat a school twice to win the conference.
- 57:03SPEAKER_10: So this year, like as happy as I was to beat Oklahoma State, like I can understand like if one of their fans was like, We already beat them this year, like, why do we have to go play them again?
- 57:12SPEAKER_10: Um, and when you have like the pure round robin, like we have, it's great, but when you add a championship game to that, that means somebody is gonna have to, you know, like beat somebody twice a lot of the times, um, to to win that.
- 57:25SPEAKER_10: Uh, with divisions that it can still happen because you're gonna have some crossover games, but I feel like it'll happen less and less with divisions.
- 57:32SPEAKER_10: Um, plus, I just I feel like it gives two clear people that make sense that go um go to the conference championship game.
- 57:40SPEAKER_10: It gives somebody that maybe if they're in a worse division the opportunity to pull off an upset.
- 57:44SPEAKER_10: We've seen that happen plenty of times throughout the years.
- 57:46SPEAKER_10: I remember what was it like 2004?
- 57:48SPEAKER_10: Colorado beat Texas in the Big 12 championship.
- 57:51SPEAKER_10: Um, so you know, I I I'm a I'm a pro division guy, but if they decide to do some kind of like pods or non-division kind of uh way of doing things, I'll be okay with it.
- 58:02SPEAKER_10: If I was making the divisions, I would absolutely set it up as an east-west thing.
- 58:07SPEAKER_10: My number one priority is West Virginia and BYU can't be in the same conference.
- 58:11SPEAKER_10: Like, yeah, that's where I'm starting.
- 58:13SPEAKER_10: I'm putting them in separate conferences and I'm working my way there as kind of like an east-west style thing.
- 58:18SPEAKER_10: Um personally, I hope that they keep the Texas schools together.
- 58:23SPEAKER_10: Um, so I would want to see like basically if I was doing it, I think I would probably just have something set up where it's like BYU Oklahoma State and the four Texas schools, and then everybody else with West Virginia.
- 58:34SPEAKER_09: I I'm 100% pro divisions as well.
- 58:37SPEAKER_09: I'm definitely more of a uh I'm I'm pro east-west, but obviously you got to conglomerate the southern schools together into the western uh zone.
- 58:47SPEAKER_09: I just think you may you're just so much happier as a fan anywhere you are if you do the division.
- 58:51SPEAKER_09: Because I I love me some cyclones, love me some mountaineers, but I would rather play the Baylor Bears, I'd rather play the Oklahoma State Cowboys every year instead of them because it's just we're like we're closer, I'm more likely to interact with those fans than I am my cyclone fans.
- 59:04SPEAKER_09: And wait, that's when they call four years.
- 59:07SPEAKER_09: Like exactly.
- 59:08SPEAKER_10: We've been we've been playing each other.
- 59:10SPEAKER_10: Like we, you know, you guys were independent for a little while when you first started playing football, and then you and then you joined the Southwest Conference, but we've been playing each other in the same conference for 60 years plus now.
- 59:20SPEAKER_10: I think you know, us and any living fan.
- 59:23SPEAKER_10: Yeah, us and TCU have played almost more than like I think it's there's like six or seven quote unquote rivalries that that uh that have been played more times than like Baylor TCU.
- 59:35SPEAKER_10: Us, you know, the two of us, I think, have played close to 100 times.
- 59:38SPEAKER_10: Uh, so yeah, keep that together.
- 59:40SPEAKER_10: I don't want that split up.
- 59:41SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah, I agree with you.
- 59:43SPEAKER_07: And and the travel concerns, I mean, you you can't have a year where BYU plays both UCF and West Virginia, it doesn't make sense.
- 59:49SPEAKER_07: It's so right far from one another, and then it includes TV times, you know, who's gonna play somebody's going across two different time zones.
- 59:57SPEAKER_07: I mean, it just doesn't make sense, so yeah, I am pro divisions as well.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_07: I'm also pods, I think is an interesting idea.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_07: Uh, just for the fact that we have 12 teams, you know, that could split it up even better with potentially like a rival, quote unquote, that you play every year that's not technically in your pod.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_07: I think there's a lot of different options, but I think there needs to be some sort of togetherness, some sort of like order that you need to have.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_07: And I think divisions provides that.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_07: But um, it's interesting that you brought up TCU and the rivalry because me and Tristan were talking pre-pod.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_07: We're really interested.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_07: We have no idea how Baylor fans and TCU fans feel about that rivalry because we don't know if it's like something like crazy, like we hate you, you're the worst, or kind of like okay, mutual respect type of deal, or I don't know.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_07: But me and Tristan thought it would be fun to ask a Baylor fan because you would know.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_07: Um, with the TCU rivalry, is that kind of your main deal?
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_07: Is that the game you look forward to every single year?
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_09: Is that circled on the calendar, like more so than other teams?
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_10: It is the game on the calendar that my wife knows that if it doesn't go the right way, then she like will she will try to comfort me the rest of the day.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_10: Like, I I look at the rivalry with TCU, it's not as like so.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_10: Like, you look at Iowa, Iowa State, right?
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_10: They cannot stop talking to each other.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_10: Like, if you follow any Iowa State fans or Iowa fans, like you just they're constantly bickering.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_10: It was the same thing with like Texas and Texas AM for the longest time.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_10: I look at our rivalry as like the worst divorce that you can imagine.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_10: Like, think about like people that have gone through the worst divorce, they don't show up at each other's houses and talk shit, they completely ignore each other.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_10: And so, like, for 364 days a year, I I don't I don't look at interact with or care at all about anything that a TCU horn frog does outside of like three or four people that I like, but that one day, oh, it's on, and so it's like I I I literally cannot stand them so much that I just ignore everything that they do and try to put them out of my brain.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_10: I mean, we played them 117 times, and the it like, yeah, we we played them for the first time in 1899, and basically I think there was this small break where the like the rivalry really cooled down after the Southwest conference went away.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_10: We went to the Big 12, they got left out.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_10: Um, and then we did not play each other until 2006.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_10: So, my very, very first experience as a Baylor fan was 2006, game one against TCU.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_10: It was the first game that we had played them since the Southwest Conference, and my hatred of them started from that day, just seeing their fans interact with us, talk trash about how horrible we were, and how they were like everything about them was so much better because they didn't even get in the Big 12 and they were a better football program than we were, yada, yada, yada, which was true at the time.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_10: Um, but yeah, there's been a lot of things that have happened in the Gary Patterson era between us and you know, he who will not be named, um, that that happened there.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_10: I think that kind of cooled down a little bit with rule.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_10: Aranda's not like a big rah-rah rivalry guy.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_10: Um, but yeah, our fan base, especially the older ones, absolutely hate TCU with a passion.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_10: I think some of the younger fans that we have look a little bit more towards Texas.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_10: Um, but Texas for me, like the hate that I have for them is pr is more recent, just for me personally.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_10: When I was in school, the two biggest rivals that I cared the most about were AM and TCU.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_10: AM, I just don't care about as much since they left for the SEC.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_10: They're kind of like, okay, fine, whatever, they're AM.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_10: Um, but yeah, no, I hate TCU with a passion.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_09: That's interesting.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_09: I I I was I I kind of assumed that it got red hot because of the way it they all met up again in the Big 12.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_10: Yeah, it got it got to a new level that it's not it hasn't reached since like the 6158 era, right?
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_10: Um, but like it's it's it's kind of always there under the surface.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_10: That's what kind of like mentioned.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_10: It's like we've had like a divorce and we just don't really talk to each other anymore.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_10: But if we ran in ran into each other in the supermarket, there's absolutely looks.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_09: I'm really try not to be this guy.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_09: I I I just I just have a hard time like I I absolutely believe it, but it's like it's a hard time for me to envision this because I just feel like TCU fans are rare, and I'm really not trying to sit in and act like you know that's what I mean.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_09: I'm not trying to sit here and act like oh, they're nobody compared to us with our big old fan base and all that.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_09: I'm just saying, like, they really aren't out there.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_09: Like they're you if you spot one, you're like, oh wow, it's a TCU fan.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_09: Like, that's how I feel.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_09: Whenever I'm gonna go, no, I agree with you in the wild, like, like my whole thing was like, are y'all arguing with a ghost?
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_09: You know, it's like it's like is this like movies y'all are yelling at kind of thing?
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_10: Maybe that's part of it because there's only like one or two guys on Twitter.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_10: Like, I I follow Stats of War, I follow Yell MK.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_10: I love both those dudes, I think they're great.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_10: Um, yeah, on Twitter as TCU fans.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_10: Um, but besides that, like I've I've had I've had a few TCU fans hop on my mentions historically about things.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_10: Um, like maybe when I spoke too soon this season in football.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_10: Um, but you know, you're not wrong.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_10: Anytime I see like a TCU bumper sticker, it's always like on a highway and some random, it's never here because they don't leave Fort Worth.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_10: And uh and I'm always like, huh, he definitely went to TCU.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_07: Yeah, but I think exactly the majority when you're just talking about your schools in general, you get a lot of Texas kids going to Baylor.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_07: I don't think you get a lot of Texas kids going to TCU, you know, you get a lot of California, so like all that kind of stuff.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_10: Baylor has more people than old miss now.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_10: I learned that in the in the sugar ball this year, or it's bigger than old misses, but like TCU.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_10: I'm gonna Google this real quick.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_10: I'm pretty sure they only have 8,000 students.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_10: It's probably 12.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_10: They're they're I mean it's like 12 many.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_10: They are 10.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_10: They have 10,000 now.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_10: Congratulations on getting into the five in between.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_09: Yikes.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_09: That's that's what I was.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_09: Saying that's like that's what I actually I was the one that thought of this question because I was like, you know, I was really interested in this because like I I like this was what brought it to my mind.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_09: I was like, they're not out there.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_09: I don't know what Baylor fans are chasing right now, you know.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_09: So it's just and obviously tech hasn't been really good enough to really flare it up, but it's just it's it's just like who are they yelling at?
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_10: I just googled tech enrollment and I got the Orange Technical College South Campus.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_10: Um how many are there?
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_10: So yeah, TCU's 10,000.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_10: You guys are 36 and a half, Baylor's a little bit over 20.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_10: SMU is bigger than tech than TCU.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_09: Oh my gosh, I wouldn't have called that.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_09: I would have thought TCU was bigger.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_09: That's crazy.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_07: Oh no, that's crazy, itty bitty, but um, yeah, that's I mean, that's interesting because I've always wondered what the Baylor TCU thing was because I know it got heated there for a while when both of y'all were really good fighting for you know that potential Big 12 and and potential college football playoff bid or whatever.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_07: But um, no, ever since then, it's just kind of like you said, it's it's silent, and you know, it's not we'll talk about Texas all day long, you know, we'll talk about a team we hate every day, 365 days of the year.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_07: But you you guys are just like, I don't know who they are, I don't care about the Horn Frogs until we play them, and then it becomes heated.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_10: And the rivalry is like basically still old because like TCU started in Waco, so they were like they were like across the street from Baylor for a while, and so that's that's that's a big piece of like where that rivalry started.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_10: And we've just we've always played each other, with the exception of that little break in the 90s and early 2000s.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_10: Um, so it's just always been around, but yeah, I think I think you're right because they're just not as vocal, like there's not as many of them out there.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_10: The younger fans definitely gravitate much more towards that Texas rivalry, yeah.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_07: And it's easy to you know put gel two together.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_07: Y'all are the two big private schools in Texas, you know, besides SMU, but SU isn't in a power conference.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_09: What's that, Tristan?
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_09: One's big, yes.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_07: One, yeah, what one's big, TCU is not.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_07: Um, but yeah, that's interesting.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_07: Uh uh, wanted to ask about that because y'all are actually one of the ones that are actually keeping your biggest rival kind of in the conference.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_07: Um, and so that's really cool for y'all.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_07: You know, I think a lot of new rivalries are gonna form from these four new schools coming in, uh, specifically tech and Houston.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_07: I think that's gonna be a massive one.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_10: Um, I think you guys in Oklahoma State are gonna I think I think that's gonna be something special.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_10: It just makes sense.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_07: They stole all of our stuff, so yeah.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_10: You're both like the western themed, like guns blazing kind of like it makes sense.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_10: Put us in the cotton bowl, yeah.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_10: Like I feel like every single Oklahoma State Texas Tech matchup, god cotton bowl.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_07: Um every single Oklahoma State Texas Tech matchup needs to start with like I say, I say both of our horses just run at each other, and then the winner wins.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_09: Throw the pistols away and grab a jowl, throw it back to medieval times.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_08: Paddles versus tortillas, baby.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_07: Well, see, it's wild.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_07: We have the saddle tramps, they have the paddle traps, they have a horse, we have a horse, there's no resemblance tech fish pistol Pete, red rate of red.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_07: I mean, come on, it's they stole all of our pistols.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_07: Firing is two different things, you do they do the two-finger symbol on their hand, we do the one.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_07: It's ridiculous, it's stupid.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_07: They stole everything, they are actually Xerox U.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_07: And so, yeah, I think that's a new that's a great rivalry for us.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_06: Um, but all right, let's move on.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_06: What do we got?
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_06: What we got next.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_09: Um, these always go sweet.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_09: We're just here like go on and on, don't we?
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's a lot of great content.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_09: Yeah, we know everyone, Joe.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_07: We know Joe.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_06: When we're talking to people we haven't talked before, I mean, we're gonna be a little more political, it'll be a little more short and sweet.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_09: Yeah, this is just this is just dudes being guys, man.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_06: Yeah, all right, man.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_07: Next question: What would you like to see from the new Big 12 moving forward after UTNO you do leave for the SEC?
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_10: I say you do everything you can to get to 16 schools as fast as possible.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_10: I think I think we are I think we are headed towards a like a reckoning of like power conferences, and I think you need to just you need to get as much as you can.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_10: And by getting to those 16 schools, I mean we have to do everything in our power to collapse the Pac-12.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_10: I think wow, I think whoever the new athletic or the new conference commissioner is, he needs to be a person that has experience in like hostile takeovers and mergers and acquisitions because I want him hard going after everybody that he can possibly get from the Pac-12 to add to this conference as soon as possible.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_09: Wow, I that this might be the hottest question we've asked you, man.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_09: Like, I've never heard this take before.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_09: That's that's that's wild.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_09: That you you just want to go and grab all the all the Arizona, Colorado, and Utah.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_10: I think, man, that's that's that's the uh the second girls you asked to dance, man.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_10: I'm calling USC.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_10: I'm calling USC first.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_10: I'm calling Oregon.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_09: Whoa.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_10: I'm calling Stanford.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_09: I'm calling town.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_09: Do you not think they're too in bed with the Big Ten to make that happen?
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_09: So the Big Ten also have this weird romance.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_10: So they do, but I I I don't know, man.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_10: Like I think you can I think you can convince them the Big Ten doesn't really care about them.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_08: I I'm probably wrong here.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_08: Or are we just too I say just go for it, man?
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_10: Go for it.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_10: You just because I think I think at some point, I think at some point they're gonna come after us.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_10: And I think everybody's gonna try to dismantle us.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_10: So we what we haven't been historically as a conference is the aggressor.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_10: We were this kind of strange love child of the big eight in the southwest conference.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_10: Um and we never got like the front foot forward to really being the controlling conference, especially when we were the best football conference that existed.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_10: Um, I mean, think about it.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_10: It was it was less than 20 years ago that an unlike a one-loss or undefeated Auburn got left out of the national title game for Oklahoma.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_10: So, um I mean you have to become the hunter, and that's what the SEC and the Big Ten were for the last two decades.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_10: So you have to become that now, I think.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_10: And so you got to go after some big names.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_10: If they don't want to come, you go after the lesser schools, try to say, look, you haven't been competitive, maybe you haven't been happy with what you're doing, they don't care about you as much.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_10: We're not a school, we're not a conference that has a big dog like a USC or an Ohio State or an Alabama anymore.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_10: We're we're we're a group that's all in this together and we're trying to survive.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_10: Come over here and we're gonna make sure you stay comfortable.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_10: So I could see that convincing a Colorado, a Utah, or the Arizona schools, maybe.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_10: Um, maybe even a school like Stanford that you know is maybe tired of all of the uh the kind of the politics that are going into everything and having to worry about things, and they just want to be a good school that has you know decent athletic programs.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_10: Who knows?
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_10: But yeah, that's what I want to see next is is aggressive expansion.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_09: I'm I'm in full of saying they want the one.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_07: No, you go ahead, Tristan.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_07: What do you got to say?
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_09: Uh I was just gonna say, you know, it the the the hot the the what surprises me is you you think that uh I mean it's it's not a bad uh take is you think that they're gonna want to sink the Big 12.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_09: And I I don't I don't doubt that OU and UT and even AM and stuff would like to see that happen, you know.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_09: Obviously, that you get to get some competition out of the way that's not even close anymore.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_09: You know, you get to own Texas football or Oklahoma football and all that.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_09: Um, but don't you think if they wanted to drain us?
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_09: Don't you think the Pac-12 had the door wide open to go and grab a Texas tech with maybe a Baylor in Oklahoma State?
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_09: Don't you think that door was open and they didn't want to do it to take then that would have killed the Big 12?
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_09: I really don't know if it would have made it past that.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_10: I think that the Big Ten and the Pac-12 and a little bit of the ACC get in their own way around academics and still think that that matters in that like grand athletic scheme.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_10: I think that I think uh the Big Ten, especially like looks at themselves as kind of like a holier than now conference, and I think the the Pac-12 was pretty close behind them in that.
- 1:14:39SPEAKER_10: Um, and I think that's why they weren't able to make those moves, because for whatever reason, they think that like, oh my god, I am so much better than a Texas Tech out there.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_10: We're gonna like there are plenty of things that you can go to Texas Tech for that are better ranked than any of the schools in the Pac 12 because that's what Texas Tech's known for.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_10: Like, um, and I think that, and this isn't a political podcast, this isn't political political commentary, it's just a statement of fact.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_10: A lot of the schools in the Pac 12 are more left-leaning, and a lot of the schools in the current um Big 12 generally are right-leaning, um, especially the private schools that have religious leans to them.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_10: And I think that's something else that like the Pac-12 has been wary about getting in bed with.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_10: So um, not even just the schools, the states as well.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_10: Yeah, the states involved.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_10: But I think it's going to come to a head where ESPN, the networks, and everybody that's involved are gonna be also involved in the background of this, and just the way that the landscape is moving.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_10: I think that the Pac 12, the ACC and the Big Ten are gonna have to start ignoring some things like that.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_10: Already seeing that in the Big Ten, right?
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_10: They they will only take AAU schools, which is like a certain level of academic achievement, right?
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_10: And Nebraska is no longer an AAU school, but the Big Ten doesn't seem to seem to care about that.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_10: So um, I think we're already starting to see things like that slip.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_10: Um, but yeah, it'll be interesting to see because the Pac-12 does have a new conference commissioner.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_10: So I'll be interested to see kind of like the moves he decides to start making.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I I think every I'm I'm with Joe here.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_07: I think you have to be the hunter at this point.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_07: The problem, the biggest problem with Bowlesby is that he got content with where the Big 12 was, and he didn't try to look to the future and look to you know build the conference more.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_07: And the SEC did that, the Big Ten did that, and now we're in the position that we are in, which I'm not mad about.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_07: I'm not mad about the current teams that are in the Big 12, but when it comes to this type of stuff, tradition is thrown out the freaking window.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_07: That got thrown out the window in 2011 when AM left and all and Nebraska left and all that kind of stuff happened.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_07: That there's no longer tradition in college sports, it's about the money.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_07: And for the Big 12 right now, we are looked at as the fifth best conference, perception-wise, amongst the majority, which is right or wrong, it's what we're looked at.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_07: And so I agree with you, Joe.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_07: You look to Nebraska, you look to Missouri, you look to Colorado and say, Hey, you guys are never gonna freaking win in your conference that you're in right now.
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_07: Co join the Big 12, come back, we'll build ourselves up as a conference instead of just letting you know these other conferences progress as we diminish, as we have these last couple of years.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_07: So I'm with you, Joe.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_10: That or you think those teams throw the bag at Notre Dame.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_10: Like you just step up and you're like, Look, we've acquiesced to a major power before, we've let people have their own network and their own TV deal before.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_10: Notre Dame, come on, baby.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_10: We're the ones they finally designed.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_08: Catholics versus Mormons, the Night Bay Rivalry.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_06: Next we got Baptists, we got Mormons, we got we got whatever the hell the Red Raiders are.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_06: So we got alcoholics, hell yeah.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_07: Um, no, I mean, it this could be a uh much bigger podcast.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_07: We could go much longer on this, but um, yeah, it's interesting to find uh, you know, the different schools and and the the fans of different schools to see what the Big 12 should do moving forward and uh all that kind of fun stuff.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_07: So that's the whole point of this whole uh this whole off-season series that we're doing here.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_07: Um, but let's move on because this is uh you know, this question could go on for for so much longer.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_07: Um let's talk about Waco and Baylor because Waco, you spent a few years there, Joe.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_07: Uh Waco gets a bad rap from the majority, I'd say, of of other college sports fans.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_07: Why from a former residents' viewpoint, how do you feel about the hate that Waco receives?
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_10: So, like it's I think it's similar to Lubbock, where the people that just like pass through or just get like secondhand knowledge of it from people that pass through or visit a couple times, like it's the worst place in the world.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_10: But when you've actually lived there, like man, it's actually pretty fun.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_10: It's a college town.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_10: I mean, it does it have a north gate like college station have, or a sixth street like Boston has.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_10: No, it's it doesn't have like that.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_10: But there are if you want to if you want to go out and have a good time and party, there are plenty of places to go out and have a good time and party.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_10: Um, you know, whether you're a frat party kind of guy or going out to a bar, you want good food, that stuff exists there.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_10: The the funny thing about Waco is I feel like every generation of like Baylor Grad that you talk to, or people that have lived in Waco, the con the common theme that you'll hear is like, Well, they don't know what it was like when I was there, we didn't have X, Y, and Z.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_10: And now that's me, because every time I go back, there's just so much stuff that they have there now, and I'm like, Where was this when I was here?
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_10: You know, um, I think, and I think a lot of it comes from like the early 90s, the David Koresh branch of Idian stuff, like Waco's a crazy place, and then we were also crappy at all the sports during that time, too.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_10: So, like, there was never really like any time for like Waco to build up or be a the destination that people wanted to go to, but more recently with um Chippin' Joe, um God, uh, but yeah, with with Magnolia, Fixer Upper, like that little crew, they have turned Waco into this almost like trendy place where um moms want to visit, and it's not known for having like a crazy cult that the ATF set on fire.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_10: Um, so there's this there's this nice like new Waco that seems to be forming.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_10: Um, there's a really cool food scene there.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_10: There's a like I said, there's plenty of bars and like good great places for your for anybody to go.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_10: Um, Lake Waco, it's kind of gross, but you can fish there.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_10: It's okay fishing.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_10: I've caught some stuff in there.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_10: Um, you can go swimming in it, but like overall, it's a beautiful college campus, it's a basic small college town and easy access to Austin and Dallas.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_10: So just a bunch of that's the one thing I would say it definitely has over over Lubbock, is like you can get to other places quickly from there.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_07: We okay, so we've we've had this conversation many a times over Twitter and everything like that.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_07: If your number one goal is to say, hey, come here, you can go other places, you know, that that kind of gets to us a little bit.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_10: I'm not gonna lie, like Austin is a very fun city, and there were plenty of weekends where it was like, let's make a day, or like, you know, hey, you want to go down to San Marcus?
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_10: Like, you can do that easily.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_10: So um, I look at that as a bonus.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_10: Uh, but yeah, overall, like Waco is one of the coolest places I've ever lived.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_10: I wouldn't live there right now in my life, but it's definitely a place where if I do somehow make enough money someday to retire when I'm older, like I could see myself buying a place near Lake Waco and kind of just living there and then spending my time after my kids out of the house and my wife and I are old, just going to every Baylor sporting event or something like that.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_10: Um, that's the dream, isn't it?
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_06: Man, that's the dream.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_10: Exactly.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_10: Like, just it's a it's a it's a quiet town.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_10: Um, but it it's it's got plenty that you would ever want to do, um, especially if you're in your 20s.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_09: So just in which yeah, for so for our that that that brings us right to our next questions.
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_09: If you have to rank the Colts, do you have to go for the hometown team?
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_09: Is I didn't think you were gonna go there.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_09: You got the BDs at number one.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_06: I I didn't I didn't think you were gonna go there, but here we are.
- 1:22:14SPEAKER_09: Big crash era.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_10: So so I don't know if you guys know this, but it is it is a requirement to for every Baylor student.
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_10: I don't know if it still is, I assume so.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_10: But uh when I was there, it was a requirement that you had to attend two semesters of chapel, like it was a pass fail class, and it was just attendance, like you had to go to chapel for two semesters.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_10: And I remember my freshman year, somebody spray painted in the parking garage next to my dorm that David Koresh should have gone to chapel.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_06: Oh man, what a time!
- 1:22:44SPEAKER_07: What a time.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_07: Um, yeah, I I mean, I think general consensus, and and I don't know if you're blinded to this as a Baylor fan, you're around a lot of Baylor fans.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_07: I think the general consensus is that Waco is kind of the worst Big 12 college town.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_10: And oh yeah, like I've heard I even heard it before I went there.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_10: Like Waco's a dump, you're not gonna have any fun there.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_10: And like when you first get there, you're like, okay, like it's it's got houses and a college campus and some restaurants, and like but then when you like start actually getting like ingrained to it, like ingrained into the city itself, like there it's it's a cool place to be, it's no different than a lot of college towns that I've visited.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_10: Um, you know, and I and like I said, it's just ever growing and it's getting like cooler and cooler, and um, especially now that that Baylor is building things like on campus.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_10: I think that was another part of it, is like Floyd Casey Stadium is like super far away from campus.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_10: Um, like the Farrell Center is just like this golden nipple that sits on the river.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_10: Um but like we've got a new basketball arena being built.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_10: We built McLean Stadium.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_10: Um, a few years before I went to school there, they built the Baylor Science Building, which is just this immaculate, beautiful building that's right there near I-35.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_10: Um, I-35's getting an expansion, and there's these like great bridges that light up that are right next to campus now.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_07: Is it though?
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_07: Is it getting an expansion?
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_07: Because it seems like I-35 is forever in construction under construction since 1845.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_10: But um, that's part of the charm.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_10: Welcome to Waco.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_09: Grab a cupcake.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'm I'm interested.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_07: I'm interested because Lubbock, you know, we me and Tristan obviously both went there, and you can't walk into a restaurant without seeing something Texas Tech, something red and black, something, you know, wreck'em.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_07: This is uh a Texas Tech institution, that type of thing.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_07: Is that the same thing in Waco?
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_07: You walk into a local restaurant, you always see something Baylor.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_10: So, not when I was there, more recently, when I visit, it's definitely much more.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_10: To be honest with you, when I was there, there was um like a clear dividing line of the Baylor bubble and city of Waco, and the two didn't really necessarily get along with each other.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_10: And the city of Waco was actually like pretty heavily longhorn fans, like you'd see a lot of longhorn stuff in Waco.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_10: Um, but again, we were really bad at everything for a really long time, and um there was uh, I think I like I'll be honest, like, there's kind of like this cockiness because there's a there's a big difference between the average Baylor student and the per capita GDP of the average normal Waco resident.
- 1:25:16SPEAKER_10: So, like, I think there was like some cockiness and some elitism that would happen between like the school and the city over the past probably fit 10 to 15 years, those barriers have really started to break down.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_10: The school and the city get along really well, they've been working to develop things together.
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_10: I think um a lot of students have stayed behind too as the cities become cooler and cooler to live in.
- 1:25:39SPEAKER_10: Um, and so you'll start seeing more and more students are opening businesses there.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_10: More kids that grew up in Waco had a desire to actually attend Baylor games.
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_10: So you're starting to see kids that were, you know, when they were eight years old 10 years ago, they're 18 now, they've been going to Baylor games for 10 years because it's a cool experience to actually go and watch like good teams there.
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_10: You're not just going because you're a longhorn fan, and longhorns are in town.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_10: Um, so I think now you're gonna see much, much more of that.
- 1:26:04SPEAKER_10: Um, but there's definitely some places like you know, like if you were coming to Waco, like where you'd like have to go, that you kind of see that stuff.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_10: Like, um I I'll probably like no matter what I say here, there's gonna be like if any Baylor fans listen to this, I'm gonna be like, You you're an idiot if you said this, because that place actually sucks.
- 1:26:21SPEAKER_10: Like, um, but like the number one place I always tell people to go is George's.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_10: It's like the the classic kind of like restaurantslash dive bar.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_10: Um, it's where Pat Green, um, the tech got got his start.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_10: He used to just sit in the corner of George's and play.
- 1:26:34SPEAKER_10: They're famous for their their big O's, which is just like a literally like this big ass chalice of ice cold beer that you get.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_10: Um, their chicken fried steaks are amazing too.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_10: But yeah, George's is a great place to go.
- 1:26:46SPEAKER_10: And then the other place I always like to recommend um is Shorty's Pizza Shack.
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_10: So I worked there from day one.
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_10: Um, it was like the guy who started it Shorty himself.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_10: Um, he started like getting he started getting the restaurant set up.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_10: My apartment at the time, the back door of it was 10, like 10, 15 feet away from the back door of the restaurant.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_10: And so one day my my roommate and I were walking around the corner and we saw just like in the window of this building, like this place has applied for a T A B C liquor license.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_10: And we were like, Oh, all right now.
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_10: And so, like, we literally we like went and knocked on the door, and this like short guy, the short bald dude walks up.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_08: Shorty, he's like, Hey, how's it going?
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_08: I'm shorty, I'm opening up a pizza place.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_08: I went to Baylor, and it was always my dream to have a place where you could get pizza and beer near campus.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_08: And so I decided to finally do it.
- 1:27:36SPEAKER_10: And uh he's like he had the greatest story.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_10: He graduated from Baylor, decided he wanted to live in Hawaii, so he just bought a one way ticket without a job, flew out to Hawaii, got a job as a bartender out there, like making bank, sell like selling beer to tourists, saved up a bunch of money and decided he wanted to move back to Waco.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_10: Moved back to Waco, became a bartender there, and saved up all of his money and then opened up a pizza place.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_10: And uh, and so yeah, there it sits is Shorty's Pizza Shack and uh And um it's a great place.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_10: You can grab a slice, uh half pitcher of beer, not too far from campus, plenty of TVs, cool little outdoor area with like gornhole dart stuff like that.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_10: Um I was that's where I was working the night that Robert Griffin won the Heisman Trophy.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_10: Um that was like that was that was awesome.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_10: Um, but yeah, I worked there for like two years uh when it first opened, and I will always tell people to go there.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_10: I think it's one of the you'll see their shirts if you ever watch the show Fixer Upper.
- 1:28:26SPEAKER_10: Um like Chip and Joe's kids will wear like Shorty's Pizza Shack shirts.
- 1:28:30SPEAKER_10: Um if you're looking to grab a brew, there's a place called Crickets, um, which has uh there you guys have a crickets in Lubbock, I believe.
- 1:28:37SPEAKER_10: We do, we do have a cricket, like a thousand beers on tap um that that you can choose from.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_10: So if you want a wide selection, go there.
- 1:28:46SPEAKER_10: And then my last little place that I'll give you if you're visiting Waco and you're a craft beer kind of person, you want to try something new.
- 1:28:52SPEAKER_10: There's a and like you and you're not looking for like a loud crowd, you just want to like chill with a couple of buddies and have like a very high alcohol content beer.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_10: Um, I recommend the Dancing Bear Pub, which is not too far from Shorty's, it's on uh 11th and Spate, I believe, or 12th in Spate.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_10: And uh yeah, you can go in there.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_10: Uh it's a great little pub um for for grabbing a beer.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_10: But yeah, like those are those are my main places if you're ever visiting Waco.
- 1:29:15SPEAKER_10: It's a cool town, you should visit it, go to a game there.
- 1:29:18SPEAKER_09: And I'm pissed tech isn't playing in in love in Waco this season in football.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_09: Man, I would that would have been great.
- 1:29:24SPEAKER_09: I would now I need me some shorties.
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_07: Yeah, man.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_07: I was about to say, you're right there, Tristan.
- 1:29:30SPEAKER_07: So yeah, you know, shoot too far from it.
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_09: Gotta find a game to go to.
- 1:29:35SPEAKER_07: For sure.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_09: Baseball, are we playing baseball there?
- 1:29:38SPEAKER_07: No, baseball, I think it's in Lubbock this year.
- 1:29:41SPEAKER_07: Oh, I know.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_07: Darn it.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_07: We have another home series.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_09: No, it's at Baylor, my friends.
- 1:29:47SPEAKER_09: Not so fast, my friend.
- 1:29:48SPEAKER_08: Against a very beatable Baylor team.
- 1:29:51SPEAKER_07: Uh yeah, I don't know.
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_07: Right now, Tex Tech's not looking.
- 1:29:55SPEAKER_07: We're on a skin, man.
- 1:29:56SPEAKER_07: Uh, we'll see, we'll see.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_07: But um, yeah, actually, I mean, I you know, you kind of convinced me to go to Waco, which I never thought was possible.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_07: So uh Joe, congratulations to that.
- 1:30:07SPEAKER_07: Um, I I definitely, you know, I I've always thought my cousin went to Baylor, I've been on Baylor's campus, I've been to Waco.
- 1:30:14SPEAKER_07: I always thought Baylor had a beautiful campus.
- 1:30:16SPEAKER_07: I've I've said that from day one.
- 1:30:17SPEAKER_07: I thought it it they really do a good job of looking pretty.
- 1:30:21SPEAKER_07: It was just everything outside of campus that wasn't.
- 1:30:24SPEAKER_07: And so uh that was my kind of thought process.
- 1:30:27SPEAKER_07: But this is why we do this.
- 1:30:28SPEAKER_07: We look at different perspectives, we try to get everybody given a positive look at things.
- 1:30:34SPEAKER_07: And so, Joe, we appreciate that.
- 1:30:36SPEAKER_10: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:30:37SPEAKER_10: Back in the day, like when you were visiting, it was definitely like this pristine jewel surrounded by a dump, that's for sure.
- 1:30:42SPEAKER_07: Yeah, right on, man.
- 1:30:46SPEAKER_07: Well, cool.
- 1:30:46SPEAKER_07: I mean, I I think I think we kind of got it down there.
- 1:30:49SPEAKER_07: Part one against part one for Baylor for the new Big 12.
- 1:30:53SPEAKER_07: It was uh it was awesome to talk to you, Joe.
- 1:30:55SPEAKER_07: Uh, but of course, like we do on Talk and Tech Pod every single week, we do a song of the week.
- 1:31:02SPEAKER_07: Joe Goodman, you've done it twice now.
- 1:31:04SPEAKER_07: What is your third song of the week?
- 1:31:07SPEAKER_10: All right.
- 1:31:07SPEAKER_10: So, right now I'm gonna go with one of my favorite artists, all right.
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_10: And this is a song that like it always chills me out.
- 1:31:14SPEAKER_10: And and you know, like it's been it's been a busy, busy couple of weeks at work for me.
- 1:31:19SPEAKER_10: My son is about to turn one year old and he's teething right now, so he's going, he's going through some craziness.
