- 0:15I was meant to win.
- 0:16I am down and willing,
- 0:17so I will find a way.
- 0:19It took a minute,
- 0:19now I didn't have to ride away.
- 0:21When it get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:23you decide to stay.
- 0:23That's how a winner's made.
- 0:25Stick a fork in the
- 0:34what is going on everybody
- 0:36welcome to the Clydesdale
- 0:38media podcast I'm so pumped
- 0:40I have missed my friend
- 0:41Ariel for so long and
- 0:43finally we're hooking up
- 0:44again to have a nice little
- 0:45discussion today how are
- 0:47you good how are you doing
- 0:49Scott it's been a minute it
- 0:51has I'm doing well yeah I
- 0:54can't even remember I don't
- 0:56even remember what we last
- 0:57when we last connected and
- 0:58talked to be honest it
- 0:59would have been early last summer
- 1:03Okay, so kind of the same time-ish.
- 1:05Yes.
- 1:06So we have a lot to talk
- 1:07about because you did a lot
- 1:08this offseason.
- 1:11And I want to talk about a
- 1:12lot of it because there was
- 1:13some interesting stuff and
- 1:16new stuff that came out this offseason.
- 1:20But before we get into all that,
- 1:24I found a TV show that I
- 1:27fell in love with.
- 1:28Is it called Landman?
- 1:30It is.
- 1:31I've heard so many people
- 1:33talk about it because it's
- 1:34based in Midland, Texas, where we live.
- 1:36We have yet to watch it, though,
- 1:38but I hear great things.
- 1:40Well, I,
- 1:41so it is based in the oil industry.
- 1:45And they,
- 1:45they talk about this place called
- 1:47the patch where like,
- 1:49it's a lot of like just
- 1:51mass open oil fields.
- 1:53Yep.
- 1:54And,
- 1:55and that they have like a village
- 1:57where the people who work
- 1:58in those oil fields kind of live.
- 2:00And it's like just rows of
- 2:02itty bitty houses.
- 2:03Yep.
- 2:03Called man camps is what we call them.
- 2:06That's what they call it on the show.
- 2:08Yep.
- 2:08A hundred percent.
- 2:10Um, so where we live is, uh, an oil field,
- 2:13like the oil field city of America.
- 2:15So there's an oil rig.
- 2:17We could throw a stone to it
- 2:18from our house.
- 2:19They're all around us.
- 2:23It,
- 2:24so it became one of my favorite shows
- 2:26immediately,
- 2:27but I thought of you and Dylan,
- 2:29like the minute it came on
- 2:31when they said they were in Midland.
- 2:34Yeah, that's us.
- 2:35So we'll have to watch it.
- 2:36I've heard it's pretty accurate.
- 2:38The stuff they talk about is
- 2:39like what actually happens
- 2:41on the rigs and stuff.
- 2:43But man,
- 2:45I can't tell you the last time I
- 2:46sat down and watched a TV show.
- 2:48So I'm so out of it with all
- 2:51the good ones.
- 2:51But that is on our list to watch.
- 2:54so when I had a when I had a
- 2:56daughter that was blakely's
- 2:58age we didn't watch tv
- 2:59either we didn't watch
- 3:00movies we didn't watch like
- 3:03all I saw was disney and
- 3:05nickelodeon yeah if that if
- 3:08there's time for that in
- 3:09the evenings yeah
- 3:11It was only with her like, oh, yeah.
- 3:15Yeah.
- 3:15We have usually Sunday
- 3:16nights we do family night
- 3:18and we'll all sit down and
- 3:19just sit down and watch a
- 3:20movie and pick out like
- 3:22this past week we watched holes.
- 3:24Do you remember the classic holes?
- 3:26Yeah.
- 3:27Or like Sonic two,
- 3:28we watched a few weeks ago.
- 3:30It's her probably favorite
- 3:31time of the week, but only once,
- 3:33once a week,
- 3:34do we have time to sit down
- 3:36at what seven o'clock and watch a movie?
- 3:38It's funny because my
- 3:39daughter's biggest movie
- 3:40when she was a kid was either Willy Wonka,
- 3:43either the original Willy
- 3:44Wonka or the Johnny Depp
- 3:45Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
- 3:47Funny.
- 3:48And so she's now going to be
- 3:50twenty four this summer.
- 3:52She she came home at
- 3:54Christmas and we actually
- 3:56watched Wonka with Timothee Chalamet,
- 3:58the brand new one.
- 3:59You like it?
- 4:01It was like family night all over again.
- 4:03Twenty years later.
- 4:04Yep.
- 4:05No, when that came out,
- 4:07we listened to that
- 4:07soundtrack in the car for
- 4:09probably a month or two straight.
- 4:10There's some good songs on there.
- 4:12It was a good movie.
- 4:15My daughter teared up at the end,
- 4:16and it was really kind of cool.
- 4:19I love it.
- 4:20I love it.
- 4:22Yeah, yeah.
- 4:23So, yeah,
- 4:25I just wanted to ask you if
- 4:26Midland was really like that.
- 4:28The only thing that doesn't
- 4:29seem accurate is they drive
- 4:31to Fort Worth a lot.
- 4:34Man, I'll be honest.
- 4:35People in the oil field,
- 4:36they're on flights.
- 4:37They're driving everywhere at all times.
- 4:40Like, Joelle is always going to rigs.
- 4:42I don't know if Fort Worth is the spot,
- 4:44but basically wherever the rigs are,
- 4:47they're driving to.
- 4:48Could be New Mexico, could be Dallas,
- 4:50could be Fort Worth.
- 4:51But, I mean,
- 4:52I'm not directly into the oil field.
- 4:54Dylan's job is not directly
- 4:56in the oil field.
- 4:56So there's a lot I don't know that, like,
- 4:59my neighbor would probably
- 5:00know a lot more about.
- 5:02I think they just made it
- 5:03seem closer than it is in reality.
- 5:05Yeah.
- 5:06It's not close.
- 5:07Right.
- 5:07Right.
- 5:08And what was in Fort Worth
- 5:11was the oil company's headquarters.
- 5:13Got it.
- 5:14So like the land man is the go between,
- 5:17between the corporate
- 5:18office and the guys in the fields.
- 5:20Got it.
- 5:21And he would drive back and forth.
- 5:24Yeah.
- 5:24At least five hours is what
- 5:25you're looking at.
- 5:26Yeah.
- 5:26Yeah.
- 5:28Well,
- 5:28the other thing I had a bone to pick
- 5:30with you is you guys were
- 5:32in Columbus and didn't stop
- 5:34by and say hi.
- 5:36I'm not going to lie, Scott.
- 5:36I forgot you live there.
- 5:37How far are you from Ohio?
- 5:41I'm in downtown Columbus.
- 5:43I mean, I'm not in downtown Columbus.
- 5:44I'm in Columbus.
- 5:46Man, we should have reached out.
- 5:47Drive to the Arnold.
- 5:49Dang it.
- 5:50Yeah, I completely spaced and forgot.
- 5:54So where my old office was
- 5:56before I worked from home
- 5:58was maybe a half a mile
- 6:01from Rogue headquarters.
- 6:03Wow.
- 6:06Man.
- 6:07Did you realize that when we were there?
- 6:10When I saw your socials, I did,
- 6:11but I'll be honest with you.
- 6:13I used to work security for
- 6:14the Arnold and I avoid that
- 6:16place like the plague now
- 6:18because there are just way
- 6:20too many people.
- 6:21yeah talk about like I've
- 6:22seen vendor village before
- 6:24I've been to like the
- 6:26crossfit events it's
- 6:28nothing compared to like
- 6:30the expo at the arnold it
- 6:33blew my mind how many
- 6:34companies there are and
- 6:35there's just like thousands so many
- 6:40And you can,
- 6:41you can barely get down the
- 6:42aisles to see any of them.
- 6:44Exactly.
- 6:45And half of them look the exact same,
- 6:47but they're in a different place.
- 6:49You know,
- 6:49it's like all anything you could
- 6:51think of.
- 6:53Yeah.
- 6:54Yeah.
- 6:54I,
- 6:55but I thought it was cool that you got
- 6:56brought up by rogue, right?
- 6:58Oh, a hundred percent.
- 6:59Oh, I thought that was so cool.
- 7:00And it's the first vacation
- 7:02I've taken where it's strictly,
- 7:04I'm not competing.
- 7:05So I don't have to worry about performance,
- 7:08anything.
- 7:09It was just, okay,
- 7:10we're going to have fun.
- 7:11That's it.
- 7:13But you ended up competing with Dylan.
- 7:16Yeah, but all in good fun,
- 7:18all in good fun.
- 7:20What's nice.
- 7:21Like that's one thing I love
- 7:22about our relationship is,
- 7:24we're not just gonna go
- 7:25there and stand around it's
- 7:26like oh here's red bull
- 7:27cans like we we keep a
- 7:29little fire on it he's like
- 7:30I want to hold it for this
- 7:31long see if you can hold it
- 7:32longer so that was natural
- 7:34and it was like hey let's
- 7:35just see who's stronger
- 7:37some things I knew who's
- 7:38gonna win like the grip and
- 7:40that stuff but you know
- 7:41just having fun because we
- 7:43can only look at so many
- 7:44vendors for so many hours
- 7:45we're like now we're gonna
- 7:46now we're gonna try the vendors
- 7:50when I was working security,
- 7:51they would let us in like
- 7:52an hour before the doors
- 7:53open to go see all the vendors.
- 7:55And we would just like,
- 7:57run and we would sample
- 7:58everything oh yeah by the
- 8:00time I was done in that
- 8:01hour I could have jumped to
- 8:02the roof I had so much like
- 8:04caffeine in me and fake
- 8:07stuff synthetics all of the
- 8:09yeah but the funniest the
- 8:11funniest thing was you
- 8:12would expect protein
- 8:13companies galore
- 8:15pre-workout galore um belts
- 8:18knee sleeve the funniest
- 8:19vendor was for leaf guard for gutters
- 8:23we're like what the heck is
- 8:24this at the arnold but
- 8:25dylan did gutters in his
- 8:27past his past career so he
- 8:29was just like this is great
- 8:30tell me about your leaf
- 8:31guard I don't think the
- 8:34line for the leaf gutters
- 8:36uh leaf guards were as long
- 8:38as some of the others yeah
- 8:40no there was there was no
- 8:41line believe it or not
- 8:42nobody nobody was looking at it
- 8:45Did you get any kind of
- 8:46preferential seats for like
- 8:48the Strongman or any of the events?
- 8:50No,
- 8:51that was the hard part because there's
- 8:52so many people.
- 8:53So like the bodybuilding,
- 8:55like what everybody's there
- 8:56for was kind of hard to see
- 8:57because if you weren't
- 8:58there seated in the front,
- 9:00it wasn't raised properly.
- 9:02you couldn't see but what
- 9:03was on the screen the
- 9:04strongman man they brought
- 9:06in a crowd so we just kind
- 9:08of like sat where we could
- 9:09but no there was no vip
- 9:12special treatment not that
- 9:13I need it but it's just
- 9:14wild to see just like the
- 9:17mix of athletes of
- 9:18different calibers um did
- 9:22you do like the picture
- 9:24taking autograph signing at
- 9:25the rogue booth
- 9:26I did.
- 9:27That was definitely a bucket
- 9:29list experience.
- 9:30Because I was like, man,
- 9:31who's going to show up?
- 9:32And then I saw they
- 9:33partnered me with Sam Briggs,
- 9:35Matt Frazier, Justin Medeiros.
- 9:37And I'm like, oh,
- 9:39there's going to be a line.
- 9:41And the whole hour, of course,
- 9:42people were there.
- 9:43But the funny thing was, like,
- 9:45I'm a realist.
- 9:46They're there to see Matt
- 9:47Frazier and Justin Medeiros.
- 9:49Some for Briggs-y.
- 9:50But I'm like...
- 9:52I'm not expecting that many
- 9:53people to be like, I came for you.
- 9:55But I did see quite a few,
- 9:57I'd say at least four to
- 9:59five women standing in line
- 10:01wearing my Pretty Strong for a Mom shirt.
- 10:03So to me, that was really cool.
- 10:06And I was like, hey,
- 10:07I know you're in line with all four of us,
- 10:08but can I get a picture
- 10:09with just you guys?
- 10:10It was really cool.
- 10:13That is awesome.
- 10:14It was.
- 10:15so when I again when I back
- 10:17in the day when I would
- 10:18work that like rich and
- 10:19matt and then would all be
- 10:20there the line was no
- 10:22matter who was in the booth
- 10:23the line was always like
- 10:25wrapped around the booth
- 10:26and down the which is crazy
- 10:31yeah it was a bit like that
- 10:33you feel like a rock star for an hour
- 10:36You do.
- 10:36And then when the line's gone,
- 10:38you kind of go back to
- 10:39reality and not too many people know.
- 10:42So it's like normal walking the crowds,
- 10:45nobody stopping or anything.
- 10:47Yeah.
- 10:48Yeah.
- 10:48It's that's cool.
- 10:50I was thinking as I was like
- 10:51prepping for this, I met you at the
- 11:02And I know like in my mind,
- 11:04I never saw you exploding
- 11:07into what happened the next four years.
- 11:09Oh, not at all.
- 11:10To be a rogue athlete,
- 11:11like never in a million years.
- 11:17Stop and reflect and say, and just look,
- 11:21or are you waiting to do
- 11:22that till it's all over?
- 11:24No,
- 11:25I stop and reflect a lot because I'm
- 11:27joyful in seasons,
- 11:29but in other seasons I get
- 11:30overwhelmed and it's a lot
- 11:32every day trying to improve
- 11:34and the comparison game.
- 11:36But I mean,
- 11:37as soon as I look back and be like, wow.
- 11:40I've stood on the podium.
- 11:42I've qualified for the games this amount.
- 11:43So it just helps me keep my
- 11:45mind in perspective when I'm like, oh,
- 11:47I don't really want to work out today.
- 11:49It's like, no, look how far you've come.
- 11:51This is amazing.
- 11:52You don't have to hit it a hundred percent,
- 11:54but just go in the gym and do something.
- 11:57Yeah, definitely.
- 11:58I have to reflect a lot on the hard days.
- 12:01So I don't know if you,
- 12:02you probably remember one
- 12:03of the first interviews we
- 12:04ever did together.
- 12:06You were in your father-in-law's house.
- 12:08Yeah.
- 12:10Which is funny.
- 12:11I would love to pull that footage.
- 12:13Cause you know, there were no doors.
- 12:15There was no closet doors,
- 12:16like ranky dank.
- 12:22I think the first interview
- 12:23you were moving from room to room,
- 12:25trying to get a better internet signal.
- 12:27Yep.
- 12:27Like it was, it was crazy.
- 12:30And, um, and now you you're in this big,
- 12:33beautiful house that Dylan built.
- 12:36Right.
- 12:36Even just even personally,
- 12:38like where you've come from
- 12:39four years ago,
- 12:40got something being built in
- 12:41your backyard that I don't
- 12:42think you could have ever
- 12:43imagined no even having the
- 12:46backyard to build you know
- 12:48yeah something like that
- 12:50yeah it's fun because I
- 12:51mean we and dylan know I
- 12:53don't want to say we
- 12:54struggled because people
- 12:55struggle a lot worse than
- 12:56we did but like we've
- 12:58worked hard he worked hard
- 12:59to build this house we
- 13:00worked hard saving money to
- 13:01afford it and it's like you appreciate it
- 13:05because you know what it's
- 13:06like to live with your
- 13:07father-in-law for three
- 13:09years hoping you get a
- 13:11house you know so it's fun
- 13:13to sit back and reflect
- 13:16when I think that first
- 13:16year I kept asking you are
- 13:18you is the house ready and
- 13:19you're like it's getting
- 13:20close it's getting like we
- 13:23were saying it's getting
- 13:24close for like a good year and a half
- 13:26Yeah.
- 13:26And that is how the gym is.
- 13:28So Dylan is very consistent
- 13:30at what he's consistent at.
- 13:32And that's just things are perfect,
- 13:34but they take a little bit to get done.
- 13:36So same with the gym in the back.
- 13:38It's getting close.
- 13:40But I would still probably
- 13:41put it like six months, I think,
- 13:45realistically in my head.
- 13:46But what's nice about that is we own it.
- 13:49We're not paying a loan.
- 13:51We're not paying a...
- 13:52a rent on it like if it
- 13:54takes two years that's a
- 13:56long time but we're kind of
- 13:57in no rush at the same time
- 14:00it's funny because I don't
- 14:01I can't even imagine that
- 14:03because after my work day
- 14:05and doing the podcast stuff
- 14:06and right getting dinner
- 14:08ready or or whatever and my
- 14:10wife just had like total
- 14:11knee replacement surgery so
- 14:12I've had to do like all the
- 14:13cooking and all this by the
- 14:15time all that's done like
- 14:17I still need to build the
- 14:18back steps on my on the
- 14:19back of my house right now
- 14:20and it's just a set of
- 14:22steps right and that's
- 14:24where I give him props I
- 14:26mean our most recent fights
- 14:27have been because he stayed
- 14:29in the back till twelve a.m
- 14:30and I'm like hey I'd love
- 14:32to fall asleep next to you
- 14:33at ten p.m instead of you
- 14:35rolling into him so I'll
- 14:37give him that like he's
- 14:38good at what he does and
- 14:39he's not afraid to work
- 14:40hard but I mean he's
- 14:42working until seven p.m his
- 14:43full-time job and then from about
- 14:46nine PM to midnight.
- 14:48I'm not forcing him to go in the back,
- 14:49but he just wants to get it done.
- 14:51And he's enjoying it.
- 14:52Who am I to say,
- 14:54hire somebody like I would
- 14:56love the joy of like
- 14:58building it with my own hands.
- 14:59That's his gift.
- 15:00That's what he's good at.
- 15:02So we started this piece
- 15:03about you being brought up
- 15:04by rogue for the Arnold.
- 15:06And I know you've got to
- 15:07spend some time at rogue headquarters,
- 15:09right?
- 15:09Yeah.
- 15:10Have you ever been?
- 15:10You've been.
- 15:11Oh yeah.
- 15:11Yeah.
- 15:12That's where I got my L one.
- 15:13Okay.
- 15:13Yeah.
- 15:16And then the first ever
- 15:19Rogue Invitational was held there.
- 15:21That's right.
- 15:23And so we, of course,
- 15:24it was right down the street.
- 15:25We went to that.
- 15:27And I've been there for an
- 15:29open announcement and a
- 15:30couple other things.
- 15:32And then when I work there,
- 15:34I would go daily and mark
- 15:35down my wish list.
- 15:37But when you go in that display room,
- 15:40and I know you guys had a
- 15:41custom rig built for your gym.
- 15:43Right.
- 15:44And you go in and see like
- 15:45all the possibilities.
- 15:49Oh, yeah.
- 15:49We... It's amazing, just the showroom,
- 15:51if people have never been,
- 15:52just to go and see that
- 15:54anybody can walk around
- 15:55there and just kind of, like,
- 15:56ogle at all the cool stuff they have.
- 15:59It's fun, but, man,
- 16:01some of the stuff in there
- 16:02is so high-quality made.
- 16:05We're just like, man,
- 16:05this stuff is top-notch.
- 16:07But we are... So we have the rig up.
- 16:09We did get to see, like,
- 16:11the storage for dumbbells
- 16:13and kettlebells and wall balls,
- 16:14and it was nice.
- 16:15We were like, hey...
- 16:17this is the dimensions we want it.
- 16:18We want this exact thing.
- 16:19We were able to see a lot.
- 16:21And at the end of the rogue weekend,
- 16:22we basically put in a huge
- 16:23order and was like, okay,
- 16:25we need this for the gym.
- 16:26Please give us a quote.
- 16:27And then we were able to go on our way,
- 16:29but we got to see it in person,
- 16:30which is really cool.
- 16:32Yeah.
- 16:33Yeah.
- 16:33They do a really nice job
- 16:34with that showroom.
- 16:35Yeah.
- 16:36And it's clean, immaculate.
- 16:38You know how you go into
- 16:38some gyms and it's like, oh, it's clean.
- 16:41But if you go in the corners,
- 16:42you see all the gross stuff.
- 16:43It's like,
- 16:44there's nothing hiding in any corner.
- 16:46Yeah.
- 16:47They take really good care of it.
- 16:51And so I saw Dylan,
- 16:54you had the video of Dylan
- 16:55building the rig out, which looked like
- 17:00like a typical man job where
- 17:02you get it put together and
- 17:03realize you put it on
- 17:04backwards and then have to
- 17:05take it off and redo it and all the,
- 17:07all the stuff.
- 17:08Right.
- 17:08Yeah.
- 17:08We had our friend Jody over
- 17:10two weekends ago and she
- 17:12actually was looking at one
- 17:13of our pull up bars and she's like,
- 17:15is the rogue supposed to be backwards?
- 17:17So like,
- 17:17there's a few things he put up
- 17:19that look good,
- 17:20but like it's facing the
- 17:22wall instead of being
- 17:23flipped around and facing this way.
- 17:25So there's a few little tweaks it needs.
- 17:28Yeah.
- 17:28Yeah.
- 17:29Every guy does it.
- 17:30Yeah.
- 17:30You get in the middle and
- 17:31put it together and you're like, Oh,
- 17:32finally the,
- 17:33like the screw went in the
- 17:34hole and I can do all the stuff.
- 17:36And,
- 17:36and then you realize I put it on the
- 17:38wrong way.
- 17:39Yeah,
- 17:39which is funny because we had done
- 17:42the insulation, and then Christmas Eve,
- 17:45he's like, I'm going to put up the rig.
- 17:47And I'm like,
- 17:48there's nothing else going on.
- 17:49Why wouldn't you do this wall first,
- 17:51this wall, this, this, this?
- 17:52Gave him a list of things I
- 17:54thought needed to be done first.
- 17:56And he was like, well,
- 17:56I don't think you understand.
- 17:58If the rig goes up,
- 18:00I'm going to be a hundred
- 18:01times more motivated to do
- 18:02everything else.
- 18:03And so I'm like, okay, do your process.
- 18:05And as soon as that rig went up,
- 18:07I mean, the past three months,
- 18:09he's gotten done a ton in the gym.
- 18:12That's funny.
- 18:13My wife and I go through the same thing.
- 18:14I'll be,
- 18:15I'll have a list of things and
- 18:17she'll be like, why isn't this done?
- 18:18I'm like, well,
- 18:19that's number four on the list.
- 18:20And I want to finish one, two,
- 18:21and three first.
- 18:22And she's like, what?
- 18:24And then we get into a fight
- 18:26and then it's like, oh, okay.
- 18:27I understand.
- 18:29And then we move forward.
- 18:30Yeah, so I mean,
- 18:31I can't talk because I'm
- 18:32not doing any of the work.
- 18:33But for him,
- 18:34I think putting the rig up
- 18:35brought it to life.
- 18:36And then he's like,
- 18:37I want to keep bringing it to life.
- 18:39Whereas in my head, I'm like,
- 18:40it's going to get dirty.
- 18:41It's going to get dusty, sandy,
- 18:43put it up last.
- 18:44So it's perfect.
- 18:45But that's just a simple clean.
- 18:48So you have some of the
- 18:49highest end recovery
- 18:51equipment already in the barn, whatever.
- 18:55We're going to call it,
- 18:55I think the goat zone,
- 18:57but it's a beautiful chili goat, cold tub,
- 19:00like immaculate,
- 19:01and then a beautiful sweaty goat sauna.
- 19:05Ridiculous.
- 19:06Like I never in a million
- 19:07years would have thought we
- 19:08would have had such a nice recovery room,
- 19:10but the same thing,
- 19:11just like the blessings of
- 19:12more sponsors and more opportunities.
- 19:16So I heard you say you'll
- 19:18always work out in your garage.
- 19:19That is your spot.
- 19:21Yeah.
- 19:22With that recovery stuff,
- 19:23you will go recover out there, right?
- 19:25I mean, I need to,
- 19:26but here's the hard part, Scott.
- 19:27It's like I would almost
- 19:30need to hire a babysitter
- 19:32to use my recovery stuff back there.
- 19:36I don't know.
- 19:37It's hard for me because I'm
- 19:39already investing a lot of
- 19:40time and working out in the gym.
- 19:42Last thing I want to be like is like, hey,
- 19:44Blakely,
- 19:45you wait inside with dad.
- 19:47I need an hour to myself again,
- 19:49after I already took two hours,
- 19:52I need to use it more than I do,
- 19:53but it's hard to find the right time.
- 19:57I can see that.
- 19:58Yeah.
- 19:59I don't,
- 20:00but one thing I've noticed like
- 20:02training camps and stuff, like I've,
- 20:04I've been to a few and like
- 20:05seeing the other athlete lifestyle,
- 20:07but they'll train, go home, read a book,
- 20:10train, go home, take a shower,
- 20:11do all this.
- 20:12And I'm like, man,
- 20:12I don't have the free time to just
- 20:15cold plunge sauna cold
- 20:17plunge sauna for an hour
- 20:22okay that so now you're
- 20:23taking me down another road
- 20:24yeah sorry would you and
- 20:27would you enjoy that life
- 20:28right you're so like this
- 20:30is your thing and you've
- 20:32kind of perfected the
- 20:34methodology that works for
- 20:35you right would you be an
- 20:37athlete that would love
- 20:38just working out all day like
- 20:41I can't see that in you.
- 20:42No.
- 20:42And I think for me, less is better.
- 20:45So even if I had all the time in the day,
- 20:46I don't think it would
- 20:47equate to a higher
- 20:48performance or higher recovery.
- 20:52Yeah.
- 20:52So I do a show with Carolyn
- 20:54Prevost every Sunday night and, and,
- 20:57and she works full time as a teacher,
- 20:58right?
- 20:59So she,
- 21:00she has to really plan out her
- 21:03schedule and,
- 21:05And, and she says like,
- 21:08I have to get everything
- 21:09done and I have to be
- 21:10efficient in that time
- 21:12because I don't have more time.
- 21:14Like it is get that done and
- 21:15then get back to class or
- 21:17get back to grading papers
- 21:18or whatever it is.
- 21:20And,
- 21:21and I think that she has admitted to me,
- 21:23like that's the only way
- 21:24she would know how to do life.
- 21:26Right.
- 21:26Right.
- 21:28She would be bored if all
- 21:29she did was worked out.
- 21:30Yeah.
- 21:31Boring.
- 21:32And I think you'd get over
- 21:33it really quick.
- 21:34But she's also said that
- 21:36with this new kind of
- 21:38season with a lot of
- 21:40different opportunities now, right?
- 21:43We've added Waterpalooza
- 21:44SoCal to the off season.
- 21:46Fit Fest is now in its second season.
- 21:49We add the WFP opportunities out there.
- 21:53She's like,
- 21:54it's better to do it the way I
- 21:56do it because I can stay
- 21:57fit all year round.
- 21:59I'm not doing like a mass
- 22:01like build up for one event.
- 22:05Right.
- 22:05Right.
- 22:05Because I can't afford to,
- 22:06I just have to stay as fit
- 22:08as possible throughout the year.
- 22:10Have you thought about that?
- 22:12And do you think that the
- 22:13way you do it now fits that mold?
- 22:16think so I I enjoy fitness
- 22:18so I even if I don't have a
- 22:20competition coming up I
- 22:21want to work out because I
- 22:23enjoy it so for me I I
- 22:24would say I follow prevo I
- 22:26just stay fit year round
- 22:28but like looking at my may
- 22:30april I'm starting to like
- 22:32amp it up a little bit more
- 22:34because oh my gosh may is
- 22:36going to be ridiculous
- 22:39online semi-final for the games
- 22:42World Fitness Project the next weekend,
- 22:44the following weekend,
- 22:45my in-person semifinal if I
- 22:47don't make it from the online semifinal.
- 22:50And I think people
- 22:51misconceive it and they say like, oh,
- 22:53you athletes want more
- 22:54opportunities to compete.
- 22:55But it's like,
- 22:56I've never heard an athlete
- 22:57say that to where it's like
- 22:58now we have to, I mean,
- 23:01you can't peak for all three of those.
- 23:02So it's just being smart.
- 23:04What do I invest more of my fitness into?
- 23:09Yeah,
- 23:09I think it gets confused with more
- 23:11opportunities to make money
- 23:13and sustain themselves and
- 23:16more opportunities to
- 23:17compete are two different things.
- 23:19Right.
- 23:19But I think being fit all
- 23:23year round makes a month
- 23:25like that look less
- 23:26daunting because it's like,
- 23:27it's just working out.
- 23:28I'll be fine.
- 23:29It's not like I'm not fit right now.
- 23:33It's like,
- 23:33I'll just trust the fitness I have.
- 23:36Yeah.
- 23:37Yeah.
- 23:38So along those lines, you have like,
- 23:42I don't know,
- 23:42like a premium channel on
- 23:43Instagram where you show
- 23:45like your workout sometimes
- 23:47during the day.
- 23:48Yeah.
- 23:49Yeah.
- 23:49Do you video every day or
- 23:51just chosen days?
- 23:53I show every day.
- 23:54So like if you subscribe,
- 23:56what I did today at eleven
- 23:59after I finished the workout,
- 24:00I post it at twelve to my subscribers.
- 24:04Does that make you more
- 24:05accountable to getting the work done?
- 24:08Or are you already in that
- 24:11zone where that's not a problem?
- 24:13Yeah, I would say it's not a problem.
- 24:15But the thing,
- 24:16I thought there would be
- 24:17more of a market for it,
- 24:18which is why I opened up my subscription.
- 24:20Like, hey,
- 24:21if you want to see what I'm
- 24:22doing to stay at the level
- 24:23I am subscribed,
- 24:25there hasn't been a huge market for it,
- 24:27which is fine.
- 24:28Now it's just kind of fun.
- 24:29Like, hey, I started it.
- 24:31I'll still post my workout
- 24:32if anybody wants to see.
- 24:33But do you want to know the
- 24:34biggest flex that I think I
- 24:36have from that?
- 24:38That I subscribe?
- 24:40You and one other person.
- 24:51Rich Froning.
- 24:52No, Daniel Brandon.
- 24:54Oh.
- 24:55So to me, I'm like,
- 24:56I'm still going to post what I do.
- 24:58I don't really do scores.
- 25:00But to me, I'm like, man,
- 25:01somebody else finds value
- 25:03in it to see it every day.
- 25:05So I think that's a huge compliment.
- 25:09She's just trying to get some intel.
- 25:11She can.
- 25:12I have no secrets.
- 25:13I won't share my strength
- 25:14stuff because that's my
- 25:16strength programmer who's
- 25:17made it specifically for me.
- 25:19But what comes up from my brain,
- 25:21I've got nothing
- 25:22proprietary other than it's
- 25:23helped me do what I've done.
- 25:26Yeah, I love that.
- 25:28And at the end of the day,
- 25:29it's like I'll post it,
- 25:31but the secret sauce is the effort.
- 25:34And I know everybody puts in a hard effort,
- 25:36but there's no secret programming.
- 25:39It's hard.
- 25:40how hard are you going to
- 25:40die and work on your
- 25:41weakness and all that fun stuff.
- 25:44It's funny.
- 25:45We talked about like taking
- 25:47a step back and smelling the roses.
- 25:49And like one of my fondest
- 25:51memories of you is your
- 25:53first games when it was the, I think,
- 25:57four hundred meter run into the clean.
- 26:00And then you go back out in the next one.
- 26:02You had every time you hit a clean,
- 26:05it was like you had done
- 26:06something you didn't
- 26:07believe you could do.
- 26:07And you did it and you had
- 26:09the biggest smile on your
- 26:10face and you hopped and
- 26:11then went out for the next run.
- 26:14right this day you still
- 26:15treat all of this stuff
- 26:18like that woman who was
- 26:20enjoying every bit of that
- 26:22race you have to I mean
- 26:25with the with the burnout
- 26:27we're seeing and the
- 26:27turnover if you lose the
- 26:30joy and the mundane what
- 26:31can look mundane it's over
- 26:37so in it and I watched your
- 26:40relight video today
- 26:42Oh yeah.
- 26:43Well, didn't they do a good job?
- 26:44They did.
- 26:45Yeah.
- 26:45I'm going to,
- 26:46I'm going to go down this
- 26:47Avenue where Blakely has
- 26:49been coming to more
- 26:50competitions this year.
- 26:51Yeah.
- 26:52After what happened in August,
- 26:55I just had a big reality check of like,
- 26:58let's just go on more
- 26:59family trips and like,
- 27:01Like,
- 27:01I'm no longer peaking for a
- 27:04competition that has
- 27:05nothing to do with anything.
- 27:07Like, let's just enjoy these moments.
- 27:09Let's bring Blakely and just
- 27:10go to the beach and compete at SoCal.
- 27:13Go to London and, you know,
- 27:15just soaking up family stuff more.
- 27:18Well, and what's cool about it is like,
- 27:20she's becoming part of your content.
- 27:22Like Dylan became a star
- 27:23through your content.
- 27:25Right.
- 27:25And now Blakely is doing the same thing.
- 27:27Right.
- 27:28And it,
- 27:28and it's making it like a whole
- 27:30family thing.
- 27:32Right.
- 27:33Yeah.
- 27:33Which is really cool for,
- 27:35for lack of better term, your brand.
- 27:37Oh yeah.
- 27:38It's on brand, you know?
- 27:40Right.
- 27:40Yeah.
- 27:40And it's like, this is what we do at home.
- 27:42Now you get to see a little
- 27:43piece of it in California.
- 27:45Yeah.
- 27:47So my favorite part of that
- 27:48Relight video is you would
- 27:50always talk to me.
- 27:51You've talked with me about
- 27:52this where Dylan knows that
- 27:55you need encouraged in a workout,
- 27:57not yelled at.
- 27:59And that like he would yell,
- 28:01I believe in you.
- 28:01You're great.
- 28:02You're beautiful.
- 28:03And he would yell those
- 28:04things from the sidelines.
- 28:06And the first time you took
- 28:07Blakely to a competition
- 28:09where you could hear her,
- 28:12it's cool what happens when
- 28:14kids emulate their parents.
- 28:16Right.
- 28:17And it's so pure for those
- 28:19who haven't seen it.
- 28:20Blakely's cheering is believe in yourself.
- 28:23And I didn't take her to
- 28:24competitions to even know
- 28:25how she would cheer, how she would react.
- 28:27So like from the pureness of her heart,
- 28:30she thinks if all I do or
- 28:33all my mom does is believe in herself,
- 28:34she can lift five hundred
- 28:36pounds on that bar.
- 28:37If she believes in herself, she can.
- 28:38You know,
- 28:39it's just like the pureness of belief.
- 28:42you're great and all that
- 28:43comes with it yeah that's
- 28:44that video made me tear up
- 28:46quite a bit because it's
- 28:47just so pure it's not
- 28:49taught we didn't tell her
- 28:50to scream that it's just
- 28:51like came from her heart
- 28:53yeah and I think that's
- 28:54awesome yeah it's beautiful
- 28:56so now like my marketing
- 28:58brain is like I need a jump
- 29:00rope or something that says
- 29:01believe in yourself like
- 29:02just a little reminder of
- 29:04like all you gotta do is
- 29:06believe in yourself
- 29:07So speaking of the jump rope,
- 29:10you became famous for a
- 29:12hair clip because you made
- 29:14the hair clip a character
- 29:16in your social media and it
- 29:18took off like a shot.
- 29:20Yeah.
- 29:22And then you started making them.
- 29:24Right.
- 29:26So can you tell me what that
- 29:27process is like and why?
- 29:30yeah so I mean it all
- 29:31happened at rogue I
- 29:32competed I usually work out
- 29:34with a hair clip because in
- 29:35the summer I started doing
- 29:37that I sweat a ton my hair
- 29:40was getting all sweaty back
- 29:41here so at the games I kind
- 29:43of wore it up for a few and
- 29:44then I've just been wearing
- 29:45it up so whenever I was at
- 29:47rogue I was like I'm just
- 29:48gonna do what I always do
- 29:50in training and if the
- 29:51event will allow it I'll
- 29:52put it in a hair clip and
- 29:54like the first day I
- 29:55probably got ten tagged stories of like
- 29:58look at this hair clip.
- 29:59And then the next day, ridiculous,
- 30:01because I wore it again.
- 30:02And then once the competition was over,
- 30:04I kind of tag-blind.
- 30:06I work hard,
- 30:06but my hair clip works harder.
- 30:08And people just loved it.
- 30:09And the amount of people
- 30:10that would just work out
- 30:11and then wear a hair clip
- 30:12and tag me was insane.
- 30:15And so I had all these people messaging me,
- 30:17where do I get this hair clip,
- 30:19this magic hair clip that
- 30:20holds your hair?
- 30:21And I was like,
- 30:22why would I refer them to a
- 30:23different company?
- 30:24I would love to just make it my own thing.
- 30:27So I originally outsourced them.
- 30:30And like my whole thing is I
- 30:32have the free time to
- 30:33please the customer.
- 30:34I don't want to wait a month
- 30:35for orders to get shipped out.
- 30:36So I started taking over that process,
- 30:39found the hair clips I love,
- 30:41bought a laser engraver machine,
- 30:43figured out how it worked.
- 30:44So now like every order that comes in,
- 30:47I print it off on my computer,
- 30:49I laser engrave it, I package it,
- 30:52I ship it, take it to the post office.
- 30:54And it's become like my
- 30:55little side hustle.
- 30:56And it's so fun.
- 31:00And it's like, I have the free,
- 31:03I don't have all the free
- 31:03time in the world,
- 31:04but I have the time to package them,
- 31:07brand them.
- 31:08And it's so fun to see.
- 31:12So do you actually print the
- 31:14clips out on like a three D printer or no,
- 31:17the clips I outsource,
- 31:19like I buy from a company,
- 31:21but the branding I do in house myself.
- 31:24Okay.
- 31:24So like in reality,
- 31:25you can go out on where I'm
- 31:27buying mine and buy your own,
- 31:28but what makes mine fun is
- 31:30I put the little tame the
- 31:31main on it and then I package it,
- 31:33write a little thank you
- 31:34note and ship it a little personal touch.
- 31:38That's so cool.
- 31:39And then you came up with
- 31:41Pretty Strong for a Mom.
- 31:43Yeah.
- 31:44And this past off-season has
- 31:46honestly been a blessing.
- 31:48And I've just been trying to
- 31:49grow the brand more to find
- 31:50value in myself,
- 31:52not value in who sponsors say I am.
- 31:55Because one day that will
- 31:56leave and I'll have nothing.
- 31:58But if I can bring value to
- 32:00myself and a brand,
- 32:01so I really tried to do
- 32:02that this off-season,
- 32:03posted an Instagram caption,
- 32:05a lady commented,
- 32:07love this make it a t-shirt
- 32:09so of course the first
- 32:10t-shirts I make I send her
- 32:12a couple for free like hey
- 32:13this was your idea thank
- 32:15you for giving me the
- 32:16thought and just started
- 32:18making pretty strong for a
- 32:19mom and phenomenal the
- 32:21amount of dms I've only
- 32:24gotten two negative about a
- 32:25hundred positive of like
- 32:28what the brand means to
- 32:29them how they found their
- 32:30strength as a mom all the
- 32:31hard stuff they go through
- 32:32mentally physically
- 32:34it's been fun to see a
- 32:35little community so now
- 32:38I've I don't want to say
- 32:39I've built a community but
- 32:40there's this awesome
- 32:41community of moms so now
- 32:42I'm kind of tapping into
- 32:44like I want to help moms
- 32:46get back out on the floor
- 32:47so I'm sponsoring teams
- 32:49that'll wear like the
- 32:51pretty strong for a mom or
- 32:52use pretty strong for a mom
- 32:53as their team name just to
- 32:55get moms out there give
- 32:57back a bit because like
- 32:59moms never get stuff bought
- 33:00for them kids all the time
- 33:03so it's like here's a
- 33:03little good job keep
- 33:05working hard I love local
- 33:07competitions like that's
- 33:08how I fell in love with the
- 33:09sport so like if I can get
- 33:11people out there doing that it's great
- 33:13And what I love is in your YouTube content,
- 33:16like if you see a shirt in the wild,
- 33:19you get all excited and
- 33:20then you run over and want
- 33:21to get a picture.
- 33:22Yeah.
- 33:23And I probably have given
- 33:24away... I give away so many
- 33:26t-shirts because I'm a
- 33:27sucker for like a...
- 33:29You tell me your story of strength.
- 33:31I'm like, take a shirt.
- 33:32You're great.
- 33:33So not only like that in the wild,
- 33:35but like I'm constantly
- 33:37giving away just to like
- 33:39give back everything.
- 33:41We kind of talked about it
- 33:42before we went on air.
- 33:43Everything on social media
- 33:45right now is so dark and dividing.
- 33:47I'm just trying to find the
- 33:48little pockets of light and
- 33:50just try and let them grow.
- 33:53Yeah.
- 33:54It's, it's a really cool thing.
- 33:56And it's funny because when
- 33:58you took third at the games,
- 34:00everybody's like fittest mom, you know?
- 34:02And I was like, fittest mom,
- 34:04she's just fit.
- 34:05Like stop giving it.
- 34:07But now I see like you're
- 34:09embracing the mom part of
- 34:10it and it's becoming your brand.
- 34:13And you're just like,
- 34:14let's lean in and let's
- 34:15make this thing go.
- 34:16Yeah.
- 34:17And it's fun because it's
- 34:18organic and natural.
- 34:19Like I'm listening to the
- 34:20crowd in the comments and,
- 34:22And if they think it's good
- 34:24and I see people posting about it,
- 34:26I'm going to try and make it happen.
- 34:27So it's been fun that I've
- 34:28been able to bring that to
- 34:30life and people find value in it.
- 34:32Like one day,
- 34:34everybody's going to have a
- 34:35hair clip and I'm not going
- 34:36to sell anymore.
- 34:37But until then,
- 34:38I'm going to enjoy it while I can.
- 34:41Yeah.
- 34:41Everybody loses hair clips.
- 34:43I mean, my wife keeps buying them.
- 34:44So I know that like there
- 34:46has to be an infinite supply somewhere.
- 34:48yeah and I see him in the
- 34:49wild all the time you know
- 34:51I go to atb and there's
- 34:52hair clips everywhere I'm
- 34:53like mine is not
- 34:55proprietary so I can't
- 34:56expect to take over the
- 34:57market but you know
- 34:59crossfitters have been
- 35:00embracing it and have fun
- 35:03while you can exactly my
- 35:05goal my secret goal is to
- 35:07retire dylan at forty so
- 35:09I'm doing all I can to retire him
- 35:14So that he can fall asleep
- 35:15beside you at ten p.m.
- 35:17Exactly.
- 35:17It's the little things in life.
- 35:22So the next thing I have
- 35:23that I want to talk about
- 35:24was Tierwater Palooza SoCal.
- 35:26Completely different format
- 35:28than you've probably ever done before.
- 35:30It was U.S.
- 35:31versus the world or North
- 35:34America versus the world.
- 35:37You go to that.
- 35:39Tear actually did an amazing
- 35:40behind the scenes for it.
- 35:43It came out like six months after the fact,
- 35:45but it was fun to kind of
- 35:46relive and see what you
- 35:47guys did behind the scenes
- 35:49and the strategies and the
- 35:51smack talking and all of that stuff.
- 35:55How much did that help your
- 35:58grieving process after the games?
- 36:01Because it looked like a fun thing to do.
- 36:04Yeah,
- 36:05it was very healing because they
- 36:06definitely honored Lazar, I felt,
- 36:09all weekend.
- 36:10And it was healing for all
- 36:11of us to come together and
- 36:13just be on each other's team,
- 36:16supporting each other,
- 36:17trying to find ways we can
- 36:19all succeed so we can all win together.
- 36:21So even though there was trash talk,
- 36:23it was very healing to be
- 36:26in the same room as people and be like,
- 36:28okay, we're doing this together.
- 36:29How do we succeed?
- 36:30How do we win?
- 36:31What are your weaknesses?
- 36:32And almost be a little bit vulnerable.
- 36:34So we don't, and then the crowd there too,
- 36:36it almost felt like a warm
- 36:37hug tear treated us with such respect.
- 36:40Every meal was, um,
- 36:42brought in and catered and it was like,
- 36:45they went above and beyond
- 36:46just to make us feel loved
- 36:47and appreciated.
- 36:49Not that we need people to bow down.
- 36:50Cause I feel like people
- 36:51take that out of context,
- 36:53but it's just nice.
- 36:54It's nice to feel cool and special.
- 36:56And they definitely made us
- 36:57feel like that.
- 36:59How excited are you that
- 37:00they're doing it again this year?
- 37:02I'm excited,
- 37:03but part of me doesn't think
- 37:05I'll make the cut this year
- 37:06and I won't be there.
- 37:08So it's like, Oh, I'm excited,
- 37:09but we'll see if I get invited.
- 37:13Cause we're not like,
- 37:15not just to be humble, but like,
- 37:17I think athletes saw how much fun it was.
- 37:19People are going to be
- 37:20fighting for those spots.
- 37:23Yeah.
- 37:25But I think you're one of
- 37:25the best in the world.
- 37:26So I think that you have a
- 37:27legit claim to one of those spots.
- 37:30Thank you.
- 37:32There's a lot of great people.
- 37:33That's where I'm like, if I get invited,
- 37:35I'll be excited.
- 37:36If I don't, it's okay.
- 37:38I've already prepared for
- 37:39the worst and I'll be fine.
- 37:41What was your highlight from that weekend?
- 37:44There were a couple of highlights.
- 37:46That was the first
- 37:47competition I really brought Blakely on.
- 37:49So it was really,
- 37:51really fun to have a family vacation,
- 37:54sit at the beach, hear her cheer for me.
- 37:56Like the whole family aspect
- 37:58was really fun.
- 37:58And the hotel had free s'mores.
- 38:01So every night,
- 38:02like the team would go get s'mores,
- 38:03Blakely would get s'mores.
- 38:04And then a huge highlight was my PR clean,
- 38:07PR snatch, because I had worked
- 38:10like the hardest I've ever
- 38:12worked on a strength cycle
- 38:13throughout the summer this
- 38:15past year and it was just
- 38:17really cool to see like my
- 38:18strength guy is really good
- 38:19at what he does granted I
- 38:21had taken a month off from
- 38:22lifting and could hit two
- 38:23fifty and a two hundred
- 38:24pound snatch and I'm like
- 38:26man brian is phenomenal and
- 38:28did exactly what I needed
- 38:30to in the summer but I also
- 38:31feel like he prepared me
- 38:33for rogue without even
- 38:34knowing it because I went
- 38:35into rogue stronger than ever
- 38:37So it was cool to see I have
- 38:40the right people on my team.
- 38:42And I'm pretty strong for a mom.
- 38:44There you go.
- 38:49When you went up against Tia
- 38:51and you tied her in the
- 38:52clean and just lost... Tied
- 38:55her in the snatch.
- 38:56She got me in the clean.
- 38:58She got you by five pounds in the clean.
- 39:00Yeah.
- 39:02I think it was West Coast.
- 39:05So I was in bed watching.
- 39:08Cause that was three hours
- 39:09difference for us.
- 39:10I jumped out of bed when you
- 39:12hit those lifts.
- 39:13I was so excited for you.
- 39:16Cause I knew like that was something.
- 39:20Yeah, it was cool.
- 39:21It didn't matter.
- 39:22Like in hindsight,
- 39:24Guy is so strong that we
- 39:25lost that event anyways,
- 39:27but it was fun to go into a
- 39:28lifting event with no pressure.
- 39:30And it's like, Hey, take big jumps.
- 39:32Who cares?
- 39:33You might surprise yourself.
- 39:34That was fun.
- 39:35Yeah.
- 39:36Yeah.
- 39:37And speaking of your strength coach, Brian,
- 39:40he had made a special bar for you.
- 39:42And I saw that you got to a
- 39:44prototype from Rogue to try out.
- 39:49And you said that it needed some tweaks.
- 39:52Did I see that right on your
- 39:53Instagram or did you?
- 39:56No,
- 39:56I would say there are a few things that
- 39:59are different,
- 40:00but I wouldn't say it needs any tweaks.
- 40:02Okay.
- 40:04Yeah.
- 40:04So they did pretty good first time out.
- 40:06yeah they did awesome so we
- 40:09went to rogue for the
- 40:11arnold and dylan was
- 40:13talking to katie the owner
- 40:14of rogue about how great
- 40:16this desk is because rogue
- 40:18makes an industrial looking
- 40:19beautiful desk
- 40:21we could put in the back gym
- 40:23and so I get a notification
- 40:24like hey you have a package
- 40:25coming from rogue in a
- 40:27two-part shipment and
- 40:28dylan's like I bet you
- 40:29katie ordered this desk for
- 40:31me and is sending it to our
- 40:32house like don't thinking
- 40:34this is all about him so
- 40:36rogue delivers to our front
- 40:37porch and I'm like man this
- 40:39does not look like a desk
- 40:41and then I open it and it's
- 40:42the barbell and it was the
- 40:43coolest thing ever because
- 40:44I didn't even know they had
- 40:45made it they had sent it
- 40:47I basically shipped them the
- 40:48barbell Brian had made over a year ago.
- 40:52Haven't really heard anything,
- 40:53so I didn't know if they liked it.
- 40:55And then like a custom Rogue,
- 40:57it has Ohio on the end, shows up.
- 41:00And it was just the coolest moment ever.
- 41:02I called my strength coach and was like,
- 41:04be here in five minutes.
- 41:05I've got the coolest surprise.
- 41:06And then we probably sat in
- 41:07the home gym at least thirty minutes,
- 41:10just like looking at the differences,
- 41:12feeling it, messing with it.
- 41:13It was a super cool moment.
- 41:18how he must have felt to see
- 41:21this thing that he created
- 41:23produced by like a leading
- 41:26fitness equipment provider in the world.
- 41:28Right.
- 41:29That had to be like the
- 41:30coolest feeling ever.
- 41:33I know.
- 41:34So he, he's in there and he's all humble.
- 41:35Like, this is great.
- 41:36And I'm like, Brian,
- 41:38you created something so
- 41:39great that like we sent it
- 41:41to rogue and they liked it
- 41:43enough to make a prototype.
- 41:44And he's just like, well,
- 41:46If you didn't know Rogo,
- 41:47it would have never happened.
- 41:48And I'm like, no, Brian, like,
- 41:50this is you be proud of
- 41:51yourself and like own it.
- 41:53Cause this is awesome.
- 41:56So now my,
- 41:58my hope is that everybody else
- 42:00can try the barbell.
- 42:01Cause for me,
- 42:02I have like an elbow with
- 42:03tendonitis that flares up.
- 42:05If I do too much of like the front rack.
- 42:07but this keeps me in a neutral grip.
- 42:09So it doesn't aggravate anything.
- 42:11My PT loves it because it
- 42:13keeps everything stacked in place.
- 42:14So I'm like, from an athlete standpoint,
- 42:16from a PT standpoint,
- 42:18I think it's game changing.
- 42:21That's so cool.
- 42:22I know.
- 42:23So we'll see what happens with it.
- 42:24But the fact that I have one
- 42:26in my garage is just the
- 42:28coolest thing ever.
- 42:30Well, I mean,
- 42:31I don't think they'd make a
- 42:31prototype without thinking
- 42:33that they might make more.
- 42:35Right.
- 42:35And I don't see them going
- 42:36through the headache of making a mold,
- 42:39putting it together for just a one-off.
- 42:42Right.
- 42:44So speaking of Rogue,
- 42:47then Rogue is overseas for
- 42:48the first time ever.
- 42:50It's in Aberdeen, Scotland.
- 42:52You travel over there.
- 42:54Again,
- 42:56you have become one of the best
- 42:57content producers in the space.
- 42:59You and Rebecca Fusile are
- 43:01competing for top honors there.
- 43:03She's, well, she gave me,
- 43:06I told you like two years ago,
- 43:07I had a meet,
- 43:08I talked with her at
- 43:08Wadapalooza and I'm just like,
- 43:11how do you do what you do?
- 43:12Because at this point I was
- 43:14doing a lot of cool edits
- 43:15and very like selfish focus.
- 43:17And she's like,
- 43:17the more you can make
- 43:19relatable stuff that people
- 43:21can send to their friends,
- 43:22to their friends.
- 43:23So she changed my
- 43:24perspective and helped me a lot.
- 43:26So she's number one.
- 43:27That's cool.
- 43:29Yeah, it is cool.
- 43:31So you go over there and
- 43:32then you and Danny do like
- 43:34the Hogwarts tour in Scotland.
- 43:37It was awesome.
- 43:40But you,
- 43:41you get into the weekend and you
- 43:43end up podiuming.
- 43:47When did you know that was
- 43:48going to be one of those weekends?
- 43:53Oh man, you're going to laugh at me,
- 43:54Scott.
- 43:54I didn't know until it was over.
- 43:56So I went into the final day
- 43:59thinking it was going to go
- 44:01really well for me.
- 44:02I had practiced the sideways
- 44:04pegboard a lot and I was
- 44:05really good at it.
- 44:07and then three two one go I
- 44:08got out there on the floor
- 44:10and it's the first time I
- 44:11ever felt like my brain was
- 44:13just a blank piece of paper
- 44:15and it was just like I have
- 44:16no idea how to do this
- 44:17pegboard I have no idea
- 44:18what to do but I keep
- 44:19failing and failing and
- 44:20failing so after that event
- 44:23I was like okay there was a
- 44:24shot to podium but now
- 44:26there's no way because I
- 44:27just bombed this event that
- 44:29I selfishly went into it
- 44:30thinking I was going to win
- 44:31that event so I had a
- 44:32humble check really quick
- 44:34and then the next event went
- 44:35fine and going into the
- 44:36last event please stop
- 44:38going into the last event
- 44:40gazan was up on me by like
- 44:42fifteen points and on paper
- 44:45gazan is better at me than
- 44:47this event heavy odd object
- 44:49sandbag cleans she is
- 44:50stronger than me and like
- 44:52she can throw around stuff
- 44:54so I had just kind of
- 44:55accepted fourth place at
- 44:57rogue is phenomenal I don't really care
- 45:01But I'm going to go out
- 45:02there and just lift the
- 45:03sandbags as fast as I can.
- 45:05And I'll tell you a God thing.
- 45:07I've never felt so good lifting a sandbag.
- 45:10And like all the sandbags went good.
- 45:12And I remember on the final sandbag,
- 45:14Spiegel screaming at me
- 45:16because she finished, you know,
- 45:17miles ahead of anybody else.
- 45:19She says, pick up the bag right now.
- 45:21And I remember thinking in my head.
- 45:23I don't care.
- 45:24I'm out of breath.
- 45:25My muscles are on fire.
- 45:26I'm just going to listen to
- 45:27her and lift it, take a chance,
- 45:28see what happens.
- 45:30I get it up there.
- 45:31I run across the finish line.
- 45:33Half a second later,
- 45:34Laura Horvath runs across.
- 45:36Half a second later, Brooke Wells.
- 45:37Half a second later, Alex Kazan.
- 45:39So if in that moment,
- 45:41I didn't trust my fitness
- 45:42and just like shut my brain off and say,
- 45:44yes, I will.
- 45:46two people would have passed
- 45:47me and then it would have
- 45:48been fourth place.
- 45:49So just such a fun way to
- 45:51end a competition,
- 45:52being really proud of myself,
- 45:53pushing my limits,
- 45:55and then just hugging
- 45:56Spiegel at the end of it.
- 45:57It was definitely one of the
- 46:00highlights of my career,
- 46:02like being proud of myself
- 46:03and finishing an event strong.
- 46:07Kenneth DeLapp,
- 46:08Hogwarts wasn't in Scotland.
- 46:10well technically Hogwarts
- 46:15but they were pretending
- 46:17with the castles and all
- 46:18the stuff and right like
- 46:21you just were in the moment
- 46:22that's all yeah and a lot
- 46:24of like the Harry Potter
- 46:25was written in Scotland
- 46:27Edinburgh so we got to see
- 46:28a lot of the places for
- 46:30inspiration that the writer wrote it
- 46:34What I realized is I can't
- 46:36podium at competitions
- 46:37because Dylan can't handle it.
- 46:39He'll go out and celebrate
- 46:41like he's never celebrated before.
- 46:43So like the trip of
- 46:44Edinburgh the next day with Spiegel,
- 46:46Dylan was in bed hungover.
- 46:49So for the betterment of our vacations,
- 46:52like I can't keep doing that to him.
- 46:53Well,
- 46:56I know that when I've been at events
- 46:58with Dylan, he yells so loud.
- 47:00Yeah.
- 47:01There's no way he can talk by Monday.
- 47:04No, no.
- 47:06And then you add alcohol and
- 47:07hangover to that.
- 47:08I'm sure like he is a total disaster.
- 47:11Yeah, he is.
- 47:13But I mean, I do it to him.
- 47:15If I didn't get third place,
- 47:16he would have never celebrated.
- 47:17That's awesome.
- 47:20Yeah.
- 47:20So I know like you have a
- 47:22special place for like the
- 47:23things that you've like won
- 47:24and podium that where does
- 47:26the rogue metal go with all that?
- 47:28right now it's on the dining
- 47:30table my special belts are
- 47:32displayed on the dining
- 47:33table that's cool yeah it
- 47:37is cool and now I'm getting
- 47:39blessed enough that I have
- 47:41so many cool things at
- 47:42first it was just a shelf
- 47:44now I have to keep some
- 47:45stuff like hidden in the
- 47:46safe because I just don't
- 47:48you know it's it's classy
- 47:49if you put a little bit up
- 47:51but if you just like
- 47:52overload it it doesn't look
- 47:53as good so I'm blessed to
- 47:55say like I can't display it all perfectly
- 48:00That's awesome.
- 48:01Yeah.
- 48:01And I see like you on social media,
- 48:03when you went to the granite games,
- 48:04the story is you wanted one
- 48:05sign to hang in your garage
- 48:07with your name on it.
- 48:08And now like it's the
- 48:10wallpaper of the one side
- 48:11of your garage for sure.
- 48:13And I think even more than that.
- 48:15Right now,
- 48:16like Dylan cuts me off and he says,
- 48:18I'm not handing,
- 48:19hanging up any more signs.
- 48:20And I'm just like, stay humble.
- 48:23This is what I'm in it for.
- 48:24Yeah.
- 48:27CrossFat, we did it, babe.
- 48:29We earned this party.
- 48:31That's right.
- 48:32That was exactly him.
- 48:36So you podium at Rogue and
- 48:39then you do FitFest.
- 48:41Oh, go ahead.
- 48:41Oh, podium at Rogue.
- 48:43So the way up to Rogue,
- 48:45the airline messed up our flights,
- 48:47canceled it a day before,
- 48:48sold our tickets,
- 48:49and then because of all that deal,
- 48:52upgraded us to first class
- 48:53to make up for it.
- 48:54So flying overseas,
- 48:56me and Dylan had the best
- 48:58experience ever.
- 49:00first class right flying
- 49:02back um our train breaks
- 49:05down so we don't make our
- 49:07flight on time and we miss
- 49:09our flight and the airline
- 49:10will not refund us so going
- 49:12home we had to buy all new
- 49:15flights to get back to
- 49:16midland so thank goodness
- 49:19um we made a little bit of
- 49:20money at rogue because in
- 49:21one day we had to drop six
- 49:23grand on flights to get
- 49:24home so that one hurt a little bit
- 49:27But I learned if your train
- 49:29breaks down and you miss your flight,
- 49:31you have to call the
- 49:32airline and correct it
- 49:34before the flight takes off.
- 49:36My ignorance,
- 49:37I had no idea if the flight takes off.
- 49:39I guess any warranty is void.
- 49:42So we show up at the airport and man,
- 49:44that was a hard morning.
- 49:48Map Lady says,
- 49:49I'm still laughing at him
- 49:51getting mad at the tiles on the paint.
- 49:54Him ripping them off to prove a point.
- 49:56Oh yeah, we have holes in our walls.
- 50:01Cause I hung up something
- 50:03once and it wasn't straight.
- 50:05So he's like, um,
- 50:07because it's not straight,
- 50:08I can't handle this.
- 50:09I'm just going to rip it off.
- 50:10And he ripped it off and
- 50:11then there were holes in our wall.
- 50:13So now we have holes in our wall,
- 50:14but he proved a point.
- 50:18That's funny.
- 50:19Yeah.
- 50:19Then you go from rogue to
- 50:22fit fest in this busy off
- 50:23season of yours.
- 50:25no so get this scott there
- 50:27was rogue right yeah then
- 50:30when we got back from rogue
- 50:32I flew for reps ahead oh
- 50:35that's right colorado and
- 50:36then the next weekend I
- 50:37hosted thanksgiving the
- 50:39next weekend we went to
- 50:40london the next weekend
- 50:42dylan's mother-in-law came
- 50:43for christmas so it was a
- 50:45or my mother-in-law dylan's
- 50:46mom came for christmas it
- 50:47was a busy busy off season
- 50:50and I started homeschooling
- 50:52in august so throw that in
- 50:53the midst of all of it
- 50:56So you smoked reps ahead.
- 50:59It was hard.
- 51:00I will like,
- 51:01that's the most in pain I've
- 51:03been in a competition in a long time.
- 51:07Wow.
- 51:07I would have thought
- 51:07differently because of, of it being, well,
- 51:10you did a two day version of it.
- 51:12Yeah.
- 51:13So you had to do one workout
- 51:14one day and one workout the next day.
- 51:17I,
- 51:18I would think that it's a cool way to
- 51:20get exposure without beating your body up,
- 51:22but you're saying just the opposite.
- 51:25On the second matchup against Trista,
- 51:28I personally hate sprints.
- 51:30And that workout was just a
- 51:32hundred percent sprint max effort.
- 51:34And those just like hurt my soul so bad.
- 51:37I do a one hour long workout any day.
- 51:40A four minute sprint, count me out.
- 51:45Yeah,
- 51:46I really am starting to love those
- 51:48Reps Ahead events just
- 51:50because they're quick.
- 51:51It's easy to show your
- 51:52friend what our fitness
- 51:54world is like without
- 51:56having them sit through a whole weekend.
- 51:57Right.
- 51:57And it's easy to understand.
- 52:01They do a great job with the
- 52:03screens and the counters
- 52:04and you know where each
- 52:05person stands at all times.
- 52:07Right.
- 52:10I think the longer they go,
- 52:12the better it's getting.
- 52:14Yeah, but I feel like it's no more.
- 52:18Just from all the news I've heard,
- 52:20I think Reps Ahead,
- 52:21whoever was funding it,
- 52:22is no longer funding it.
- 52:24So, like, I don't know.
- 52:26We'll see if it lasts in the future.
- 52:29Yeah, I've seen the new stuff, too.
- 52:31I don't know the
- 52:31behind-the-scenes enough to know, like,
- 52:34where the funding is and all of that.
- 52:36Patrick Clark's in the comments,
- 52:37and he's part of Reps Ahead,
- 52:39so I'm sure he'll let us
- 52:41know very quickly.
- 52:42I know.
- 52:45We'll see.
- 52:45Um, so then you, um, he says, nope,
- 52:50it'll be back sooner than you think.
- 52:52That's good.
- 52:54Yeah, that's good.
- 52:56Yeah.
- 52:56Um, so then you go to the fit fest,
- 53:00which just seems to be a blast.
- 53:03Oh, it's the best.
- 53:04It's the best.
- 53:06Not the best, like, I mean,
- 53:08it's great competing,
- 53:09but the best community and people there.
- 53:12Like, the fans and the volunteers,
- 53:16the athletes competing that
- 53:17are there all weekend.
- 53:19Like, the best conversations.
- 53:23Um, like here's a perfect example.
- 53:25Dylan was wearing like a
- 53:27hustle made jacket and he
- 53:28left it backstage in fit fest, lost it.
- 53:32We couldn't find it.
- 53:33One of the volunteers found it,
- 53:35flew it with them back to
- 53:37Wadapalooza and gave it
- 53:38back to Dylan at Wadapalooza.
- 53:40Just like people who are so
- 53:42nice and sweet that it
- 53:44would just blow your mind.
- 53:45Well,
- 53:47and where else can you do an American
- 53:49Ninja Warrior course?
- 53:51Yeah, that was pretty fun.
- 53:54Do you enjoy doing those
- 53:58out-of-the-gym types things?
- 54:00Oh, I love it.
- 54:00I love it.
- 54:01I love the odd, like,
- 54:03did you play on the jungle gym as a kid?
- 54:05We're about to find out.
- 54:06Can you adapt on the fly?
- 54:07Like, I thrive in chaos.
- 54:09Yeah.
- 54:09It was really fun.
- 54:14Kenneth asks, how is Colton as a teammate?
- 54:17He seems more of like a lone wolf type.
- 54:20He is more of a lone wolf type,
- 54:21but I don't think it's a bad thing.
- 54:23We had a lot of
- 54:24personalities on that team.
- 54:26Colton was fun.
- 54:27I was the team captain.
- 54:28So when the workouts came out,
- 54:30I tried to help organize the team.
- 54:32Colton was awesome because we'd be like,
- 54:34what do you want to do?
- 54:35What are you bad at?
- 54:36He's like, don't put me in this,
- 54:37put me in this, put me in this,
- 54:38put me in this, and I'll win it.
- 54:39And I'm like, thank you.
- 54:41Complete transparency,
- 54:42knows exactly what he's good at,
- 54:43what he's not good at,
- 54:45and just gets the job done.
- 54:46So like him and Dylan became
- 54:47good friends because we
- 54:49talked to him a lot, but like,
- 54:50there's a lot of
- 54:51personalities in CrossFit.
- 54:53It's kind of refreshing to
- 54:54have somebody who's just like stone cold.
- 54:56Yeah.
- 54:59No drama.
- 55:00Yeah.
- 55:00No drama.
- 55:02If he sucks,
- 55:02he'll tell you he sucks at it.
- 55:04If he's great,
- 55:05he'll tell you he's great at it.
- 55:07Yeah.
- 55:08Yeah.
- 55:09I, I wish they would find a way to,
- 55:11I know Patrick tried to stream it,
- 55:12but the internet was really choppy.
- 55:15It would have been cool to
- 55:16see more of that.
- 55:16Cause I think,
- 55:19I think it's a cool event if
- 55:21people could see it.
- 55:22Yeah.
- 55:22And the points were close.
- 55:24It's not like one team was
- 55:26miles ahead of the other.
- 55:27It was a fun race all weekend.
- 55:31Yeah.
- 55:31Yeah.
- 55:32and you got and when when
- 55:34the athletes are having fun
- 55:35it comes across in the
- 55:37broadcast right for the
- 55:38spectator right and that's
- 55:40we need more of that so
- 55:43then to finish up your off
- 55:44season and then we'll let
- 55:46you get out of here is you
- 55:47went to wadapalooza yeah
- 55:50and I from all of your your
- 55:52youtube stuff I don't think
- 55:54it went as you had planned
- 55:56no I said yes to a lot this
- 55:59past year I should have
- 56:01said no to wadapalooza but
- 56:04hindsight's yeah and so so
- 56:09looking back with all of
- 56:11the choices you had from
- 56:13socal to reps ahead to
- 56:15rogue to you're never going
- 56:17to say no to rogue nobody's
- 56:18going to say no to rogue no exactly um
- 56:23Do you look back and say, man,
- 56:25I should have cut this and
- 56:26this or... And you don't
- 56:27have to tell me which ones,
- 56:29but just like in retrospect, you're like,
- 56:31man,
- 56:32I could have scheduled this out better.
- 56:34I would have just cut Guadalupalooza.
- 56:37Everything else,
- 56:39like a ten out of ten amazing experience.
- 56:43I just... I think I'm
- 56:44invincible and I think I'm
- 56:45better than I am.
- 56:46And at Guadalupalooza,
- 56:47I just was not good.
- 56:48So it's humbling to be like, man, even...
- 56:51like there's levels.
- 56:52And if you don't show up
- 56:53ready and prepared,
- 56:55I did on the first time
- 56:56ever had a few judging
- 56:58things that happened that
- 56:59never happened to me before.
- 57:00So that was kind of
- 57:02eyeopening and humbling to
- 57:03see as an athlete, like, man,
- 57:04there's things out of my control,
- 57:07but how am I going to respond to it?
- 57:08Am I going to yell on the floor?
- 57:09Am I just going to be like, who cares?
- 57:11It's CrossFit, like go about my day.
- 57:14So I grew a lot as an athlete.
- 57:16Um,
- 57:18Yeah.
- 57:18I don't want to talk about the bad,
- 57:19but yeah,
- 57:20I should have known my limits
- 57:21and said like, no, we need to stay home.
- 57:24And you did a team with Emily and Abigail.
- 57:28Yeah.
- 57:28That was a lot of fun.
- 57:31That was a lot of fun.
- 57:32Very different athletes.
- 57:33So like they're both very tall,
- 57:35endurancy and I'm shorter,
- 57:37not going to be great at running,
- 57:38but I'll do the gymnastics.
- 57:40So I felt like we evened
- 57:40each other out a lot.
- 57:43Do you like the team aspect
- 57:44of water Palooza?
- 57:46I do.
- 57:47It's definitely,
- 57:48I think if I do Wadapalooza in the future,
- 57:49I need to just do team.
- 57:51It's fun.
- 57:52I think it's fun to come
- 57:53together and like use our
- 57:55strengths and weaknesses to
- 57:57try and beat other people.
- 58:00Yeah.
- 58:01It's funny because you work
- 58:02out in your garage alone all the time,
- 58:03but like you talk about how
- 58:05fun it was to be on a team
- 58:06at SoCal at Wadapalooza.
- 58:12Is that just the change of
- 58:13pace you need throughout the season to,
- 58:14to,
- 58:17Yeah.
- 58:18Team stuff is more lighthearted.
- 58:20So it's more lighthearted.
- 58:21It's more smiling at the crowd.
- 58:23It's more throwing hair clips,
- 58:25do your best contribute to the team,
- 58:27but there's not as much
- 58:28individual pressure.
- 58:31I am the exact opposite.
- 58:34Like if I'm on a team, I,
- 58:36I end up throwing up behind the gym.
- 58:38I end up because I'm so nervous.
- 58:41And like,
- 58:41I give more than I'm probably capable of.
- 58:44And then my body can't handle it.
- 58:45And it,
- 58:46You're a good teammate then.
- 58:49Yeah.
- 58:49But the pressure I put on
- 58:50myself in a team is so much.
- 58:53And I, you know,
- 58:54I'm nowhere near an elite
- 58:55athlete like you guys, but man, yeah.
- 58:59And individually,
- 59:00like I can let myself down
- 59:01and be okay with it at the
- 59:02end of the day.
- 59:03Right.
- 59:03Right.
- 59:05While that hurts, I'm going to stop.
- 59:08I'll go home to my wife and
- 59:10my dog and be happy in my house.
- 59:12Right.
- 59:12That's all you need.
- 59:16so um this has been awesome
- 59:18it's been awesome catching
- 59:19up yeah thanks for having
- 59:21me back on it's been great
- 59:23we're hitting that hour and
- 59:24that's how we like to end
- 59:26it thank you so much and
- 59:27everybody in the chat sorry
- 59:29I couldn't get to a lot of
- 59:30the comments um you guys
- 59:32they were flying in so fast
- 59:33I couldn't keep up
- 59:35but thank you for being here
- 59:37and everybody tune in.
- 59:39Cat has her new show tonight at eight PM.
- 59:42And then we have lunch with
- 59:43the Clydesdale the rest of
- 59:44the week and Sunday night
- 59:45cross or CrossFit talk this week,
- 59:48where we're going to try to
- 59:48stay live until the age
- 59:50group semifinals are
- 59:52leaderboards are locked and
- 59:54we can see who possibly
- 59:56made it to the games and who didn't.
- 59:58So with that, see everybody next time.
- 1:00:00Bye guys.
- 1:00:00Bye.
