- 0:07Welcome back to the Simply Christ podcast hosted by Leon
- 0:10Martin, along with Aaron Keaton, Melvin Martin, Andrew Schrock
- 0:14and Dan Blatz. Let's get right to it.
- 0:19All righty, here we are. We are ready to go for another
- 0:22episode of our weekly Bible Study webinar.
- 0:28And we got the whole crew here tonight.
- 0:30That's a good thing. So we are going to continue
- 0:34going through the book of Colossians, and we are in
- 0:38chapter 1 and we're going to bounce off of verse 6 to get
- 0:42started here. But before we do that, I'll ask
- 0:44Dan to open us for the word of YEAH.
- 0:49Father, we come to you in the name of Jesus, and we do give
- 0:52you thanks in his name. We thank you that we are
- 0:55partakers of the inheritance and that you've delivered us from
- 0:59the power of darkness as we're going to learn.
- 1:01Maybe we'll get to that passage here today, but it's such
- 1:03beautiful truths in this book. I pray God that we would not
- 1:07just learn them intellectually, but that as we go through it,
- 1:10your Spirit would do his work and that your name, Lord Jesus
- 1:14name, would be made much of. And that we can see your
- 1:17supremacy. That we can see your divinity
- 1:20and your power as a man and your overcoming work in the gospel.
- 1:25That we would all be edified, built up and moved by it.
- 1:28We pray these things. The name of Jesus, Amen.
- 1:34All righty, so we dug into the book of Colossians and as you
- 1:42all know, of course we made it all the way through 5 and part
- 1:46of kind of 6 verses in just an introduction.
- 1:50So really good instruction. I thought that came out of what
- 1:56Paul wrote about the church there at Colossae and how he was
- 2:02giving thanks to God. Praying for them.
- 2:05Always mention having heard of their faith and the love that
- 2:10they have to each other. Where have you heard before in
- 2:15the word of the truth of the gospel.
- 2:17And then verse 6 says, which is come unto you as it is in all
- 2:21the world and bringeth forth fruit as it doth also in you
- 2:26since the day he heard of it and knew the grace of God in truth.
- 2:30And I'll let you go on this, Andrew on your thoughts.
- 2:33I know we kind of touched on a little bit last week, but we're
- 2:37just going to bounce out of this.
- 2:39I like it, which is come unto you as it is in all the world,
- 2:43and bringeth forth fruit. He's not mincing words here.
- 2:47He knows that the gospel planted into fertile soil is going to
- 2:49bring forth fruit. That's just a fact of life that
- 2:52got set up, Andrew. Yeah.
- 2:56It's amazing. I like how broad of a statement
- 3:00that is coming to you, as in all the world, And John 129 It says,
- 3:06The next day, John, See if he is coming unto him, and sayeth,
- 3:10Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the
- 3:14world, not a few people, not the Jews, the sins of the world.
- 3:20John 316 For God so loved the world that he gave His only
- 3:24begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not
- 3:27perish, but have everlasting life.
- 3:30We're grant God send not his son into the world to condemn the
- 3:33world, but that the world through him might be saved and
- 3:37he says in verse 19 it is the condemnation that light is come
- 3:41into the world and men love darkness rather than light
- 3:44because their deeds were. Evil.
- 3:48So the fruit. That it brings is when we find
- 3:54out, when we hear the day we hear about the fact that Christ
- 3:59came to save the world. It brings forth fruit when we
- 4:02hear it and when we understand it.
- 4:05That's another point. I'd like that.
- 4:07I'm always intrigues me. Often the general approach in
- 4:14Christianity is that we need to get God to work in us.
- 4:21We need to get to get God to change us.
- 4:25We need to get God convinced to change my heart to take over my
- 4:29life when? He's.
- 4:33Sitting here saying, I'm waiting for you to hear what I've
- 4:36already done. I'm waiting for you to hear that
- 4:39I came to save you, to change you, to give you everlasting
- 4:41life. I'm here waiting for you to hear
- 4:45and understand that you, your hope is laid up in heaven.
- 4:49The salvation is already secured.
- 4:51And what brings forth fruit is when you hear it and believe it
- 4:55and you walk in that and that is what will bring forth much
- 4:59fruit. So I think we need to stop
- 5:02trying to get God to do a work in our life to change our heart.
- 5:06We need to believe the gospel and let that bring forth fruit.
- 5:09And that will change your heart when you believe it.
- 5:12So that is also liberating for the person that doesn't
- 5:16understand why God is not doing stuff in their life.
- 5:20Like because we're taught that if you, if you get spend enough
- 5:25time in in the closet or if you spend enough time feeling sorry
- 5:31and sad and fasting and whatnot, God will do a work in your
- 5:34heart. No, he's telling you to hear the
- 5:37gospel and it'll bring forth fruit.
- 5:40So you can be free and knowing that you can find out what
- 5:43Christ did and go with it and let it and live in it.
- 5:47Walk in it unless he will tell you later here in his chat room.
- 5:51That's right. Yeah, Melvin.
- 5:53Yeah, I think I want to kind of look at the word grace there,
- 5:59you know, he says since the day you heard of it and knew the
- 6:05grace of God in truth. So it's like he's saying that
- 6:10what is causing us to bring forth fruit and what is bringing
- 6:17forth fruit is the grace of God in truth.
- 6:20And and grace is an unmerited favor or love coming from gods
- 6:27that we didn't deserve. And so when we understand that,
- 6:31obviously what he's saying, when we understand that, and then we
- 6:37live by that, so to speak, or live in that in Christ.
- 6:41And and it's just so interesting that fact because like I said
- 6:48last week is so many times Christians are just focusing on,
- 6:54you know, fruit, trying to bear fruit, where what he's saying
- 6:58here is that we need to focus on Christ and the grace of God in
- 7:04truth. And then it will bring forth
- 7:08fruit in us as believers and all around the world actually,
- 7:13right? Because Can you imagine if
- 7:18everybody in the world would commit their lives to Christ?
- 7:22You know, I mean, we know that that's not going to happen, but
- 7:24can you just imagine what that would be like?
- 7:27I mean, it would obviously be heaven.
- 7:28On Earth, so to speak, but. But it is God's heart, right?
- 7:33He, he brought it to the whole world, right?
- 7:37He has brought his grace through Jesus Christ to the whole world.
- 7:42And so it's up to us, humanity, to receive that gift, that
- 7:48unmerited gift that He has given us.
- 7:52Absolutely dying for all that's right.
- 7:54Aaron I have and I don't know what you guys think about this,
- 8:03but I've heard people argue against it and I've heard people
- 8:07argue for it. But he makes a comment in verse
- 8:116. He says talking about the gospel
- 8:13which is coming to you as it is in all the world.
- 8:16And then he actually goes on to say in verse 23 that if they
- 8:21continue in the faith grounded and settled and be not moved
- 8:24away from the hope of the gospel, which you have heard and
- 8:27which was preached, which was preached to every creature,
- 8:31which is under heaven whereof I Paul and made a minister.
- 8:35And I've heard people say that it's not possible or it wasn't
- 8:40preached to all. He doesn't really mean what he's
- 8:44saying there. But I don't know.
- 8:47I mean, I'm awful bad to take the Bible literally.
- 8:49And he does say that it's preached, that it was preached
- 8:53to every creature. And I guess if I was going to
- 8:56say, how would you justify that claim?
- 9:02If if there is justification for it is is things like what
- 9:06happened at the end of Acts chapter 8 when Philip preaches
- 9:09to the eunuch and seems to be just transported somewhere else,
- 9:14like he just just found as Edizotes, you know, after he's
- 9:18on the road. So I don't know.
- 9:20I wouldn't like, I'm not saying that to make a big deal about
- 9:23it, but it does say that in verse 23 that it it was preached
- 9:28to every creature under heaven. So I don't know, I like I said,
- 9:32I, I don't know what, what to think about that other than you
- 9:37either take it literally or, or you don't or you say no, that's
- 9:40not exactly what he meant. So I'd be curious what you all
- 9:43would have to say about that. But that that was that stood out
- 9:46to me because he does say it in six and 23 votes, but.
- 9:53Yeah, that's interesting. A lot of people would kind of
- 9:56take that with a grain of salt and say, well, everyone in their
- 9:59earshot, you know, or however they traveled or whatever.
- 10:02Yeah, I've always heard the known world, you know what I
- 10:04mean? But but but but he doesn't say
- 10:07that. The only argument that I would
- 10:09say, and like I said, I'm not really trying to make a big deal
- 10:11about it, but that's he doesn't say world In verse 23, he says
- 10:16every creature under heaven, right.
- 10:18He doesn't say world. He doesn't actually use the
- 10:20word, you know, world there. He just says every creature
- 10:24under heaven. So I don't know.
- 10:27I I think that's interesting. It's, it's not, I don't, I don't
- 10:31think it's, I don't think it matters in the sense that if I,
- 10:37I guess what I'm saying is, is I've heard people argue against
- 10:40it because they've, or maybe maybe it was arguing for it, but
- 10:46they were arguing it because it's like, well, that's, you
- 10:49know, he, he preached the gospel so that all can be condemned.
- 10:53Well, I don't need that verse to say that everybody's heard the
- 10:57gospel to be condemned. I mean, Romans chapter 1 gives
- 11:00us a good explanation of how God's going to condemn people.
- 11:03It's by their own conscience. You know, they're going to,
- 11:05they're going to know what's right and what's wrong and God
- 11:08is going to ask them why they didn't do the truth that they
- 11:13held. So I don't, you know what I
- 11:15mean? Like, I don't, I'm not arguing
- 11:17it for the purpose of saying, well, that justifies God sending
- 11:22people to hell from all over the world.
- 11:23That's not my point. I'm just making the point that
- 11:25he said that, right? Like that's really the whole,
- 11:28that's that's my reason. Like the people that what I'm
- 11:32saying is the people that would have argued that that verse
- 11:35meant what it said to me before was arguing it so they could
- 11:39feel better about God judging people because they heard it and
- 11:44turned it down. You know what I mean?
- 11:46Like that was their argument and I don't, I'm saying I don't need
- 11:49that argument because like I said, Romans one tells us that
- 11:52people are going to be judged according to the truth that they
- 11:55hold, however shallow that truth is.
- 11:58So I don't think we need that verse for justification of God
- 12:03condemning people. But I do think it's interesting.
- 12:05It's an interesting verse. Very interesting.
- 12:09Never. I never thought of that
- 12:10actually. Damn.
- 12:13I actually have some some pretty good friends, very serious
- 12:16Christians who would call themselves preterists.
- 12:19Some would be post millennial in their eschatological views of
- 12:22the of the future and they believe that the gospel was
- 12:26preached in all the world like Jesus commanded that Christ
- 12:31commanded his disciples to go into all the world preach the
- 12:33gospel to every creature and Paul says in Romans 1519 mighty
- 12:38signs and wonders by the power of the Spirit of God so that
- 12:41from Jerusalem roundabout into aliquerium.
- 12:44I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.
- 12:47And so if you're a preterist, you believe that 70 AD was
- 12:51actually the fulfillment of much of Jesus prophecies, Matthew 24
- 12:56and all of that, the destruction of Jerusalem and Christ came
- 12:59back somehow in the clouds with the Roman Empire and all that
- 13:03kind of strange view of spiritualizing some of those
- 13:06prophet prophetic statements. But they would say the gospel
- 13:10was preached to every creature. It was fulfilled in that sense.
- 13:14And so sometimes us Christians, pre millennial folks, we would
- 13:19say that Christ can't return until every creature has heard.
- 13:23And these people would say, well, actually that's not the
- 13:25case because that was already accomplished.
- 13:28And so I, I don't know what to do about some of that because
- 13:31there are a couple of those statements like we have here in
- 13:34verse 6, as it is in all the world there.
- 13:36It's just kind of making a comparison that it came to
- 13:39colossi the same way it had in all the world.
- 13:43But in verse 23, he does seem to speak more broadly.
- 13:47Like Aaron already mentioned that every creature which is
- 13:50under heaven has heard this gospel.
- 13:52And So what to do about it exactly or where it exactly fits
- 13:56in? I'd I'd be open to hearing
- 13:58everybody's views. I just can't reconcile most of
- 14:01the rest of the New Testament with a preterist view of Christ
- 14:05coming in 70 AD. And to me then, then the church
- 14:10age is done. You know, the, the bride is
- 14:12complete. Christ came back and received
- 14:14them unto it like what happened when Christ came back in 70 AD,
- 14:17if he didn't come to receive his bride to himself, and then that
- 14:21would mean the bride is complete.
- 14:22The churches were done the church age.
- 14:24And so it, it gets very confusing if you, if you think
- 14:27of it that way, but somehow they, they believe that and then
- 14:30they still try to live in the church age now.
- 14:33So I don't know, I'm not answering any questions.
- 14:36I'm just asking more I guess. Well.
- 14:40I guess, I guess I would ask the question and, and just say I
- 14:46think that that's a perfect example of sometimes things that
- 14:52that people say from what I'd call a wrong or a misunderstood
- 14:56doctrine. And I, I would, I would just say
- 14:59that I don't agree with their point, but I still think it
- 15:03could be true that it was preached to every creature, you
- 15:07know, like that. I still think that could be
- 15:09true, but it doesn't, it doesn't justify their point.
- 15:13I guess what I'm saying. Like, I think it could be true
- 15:16because he said it was true without having to confirm some
- 15:20weird doctrine like that. Does that make sense?
- 15:23Like, I mean, because I guess what I'm saying is is where is
- 15:27the I don't see, I don't, I mean, maybe you do.
- 15:32Is there a verse that would say that that's the end?
- 15:36I mean, I know there's a verse that says when the fullness of
- 15:38Gentiles come in, but that's not necessarily I always took that
- 15:41as when all that will be saved or saved, not that it finally
- 15:46gets preached in every corner. You know what I mean?
- 15:49Like is there a verse that indicates that once it finally
- 15:51gets preached in every corner, then something is done?
- 15:55Like is there that verse? Yeah, I don't, I don't know.
- 16:01Yeah, I was just curious. I'm just my point is if there's
- 16:04not then it this could be true without justifying that doctrine
- 16:09I guess is all I was trying to say but.
- 16:13Yeah, there's a, there's a, you know, I've, I've heard, matter
- 16:17of fact, we went to church services a couple of times where
- 16:21a guy was preaching that preterist view, which at the
- 16:23time I knew nothing about. And it was fascinating to me.
- 16:27But I don't know enough eschatology to raise a valid
- 16:30argument, you know, because I would mostly be going by what
- 16:34I've been taught, which I've discovered isn't right either in
- 16:38all the spots. So, you know, I never took the
- 16:41time to actually dive in and and you know, like take the Bible,
- 16:45you know, apart and for my own opinion on that, I just, I just,
- 16:50I would not feel comfortable making an argument for or
- 16:52against. I mean this is very interesting
- 16:55points here that you guys are talking about, but I can't
- 16:57support or deny it. Yeah, Well, well, and and let me
- 17:00be clear, I don't know if I was clear on this.
- 17:02I'm not saying it with anything connected to a preterist view.
- 17:05You know what I mean? I'm just like I said, I'm just
- 17:07bad to to assume it means what it says.
- 17:10And I'm was just asking that, but because mine has no relation
- 17:15to any kind of eschatology is why I'm saying it.
- 17:17I'm just curious as to, you know, like I think, I think the
- 17:21preterists would tie it back to Matthew 2414.
- 17:24And this gospel of the Kingdom, which we probably don't believe
- 17:27is the gospel of Christ, but the gospel of the Kingdom shall be
- 17:30preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations.
- 17:34And then shall the end come. So they would.
- 17:36That's what I was the abomination of desolation of
- 17:38Daniel and all that to 70 AD and say, see Paul preach the gospel
- 17:43and every nation, all creatures had heard the gospel and then
- 17:47the destruction of Jerusalem. And if you read it that way, I
- 17:50can see how they could find that in in Matthew 24.
- 17:53Yeah. Yeah, that's what I was curious.
- 17:55What is the verse making them say that?
- 17:57Yeah, yeah. Yeah, OK.
- 18:01Well, bounce into the next one here, verse 7, as he also
- 18:06learned of Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is for you a
- 18:11faithful minister of Christ who also declared unto us your love
- 18:16in the Spirit. So that's where we get the idea
- 18:19that that Epaphras was the guy that actually launched or, you
- 18:25know, started this church here probably or was at least heavily
- 18:29involved in it. For sure.
- 18:31He's backing him up saying that he's a faithful minister.
- 18:36He has declared unto us all your love in the spirit.
- 18:41So any, any common comments on that, Andrew?
- 18:44Or looks like you're digging into something there.
- 18:49Now you're muted. I was just looking at some
- 18:53verses that I thought of when you guys were talking about that
- 18:59in Psalm 19. One, it says the heavens declare
- 19:03the glory of God and the firmament showeth his handiwork.
- 19:09So there are people that would say also say there's another
- 19:13angle, which is also just kind of a a theory that creation
- 19:20shares about God and the gospel for anyone that is listening,
- 19:27for anyone that is looking for anyone that will be able to
- 19:29hear. And as far as worship, if we
- 19:33don't worship the rocks will or the mountains will, his creation
- 19:38will. So in that light, you could also
- 19:42try to make that fit. But my personal opinion is that
- 19:49gospel is Jesus Christ died for the whole world and anyone that
- 19:54believes and hears it will have a life changing experience.
- 19:59To me whether everyone heard it or not, it's not significant to
- 20:05me. I don't really care except for
- 20:07the fact that I the only thing that I care is that everyone
- 20:10does here. And he tells us to preach and
- 20:12share to anyone that we can. So we all did a good job that
- 20:16would be fulfilled, would have been fulfilled a long time ago
- 20:20and still would be fulfilled to this day.
- 20:22But for some reason there's always tribes and stuff.
- 20:25That branch off and all of a sudden the gospel seems to get
- 20:28lost. But anyhow, you were wanting to.
- 20:31You were reading which verse? Verse 7 and I can let Melvin go
- 20:36so you can read that if you were.
- 20:37Go ahead, Melvin. I would have thoughts on it.
- 20:41OK. Oh, go ahead.
- 20:42To me it it again affirms that that the point that you see.
- 20:52Paul making over and over in these first verses and
- 20:57throughout the whole book is what most Christians would say
- 21:03is not good enough. It's head knowledge.
- 21:07He wants you like Paul is telling us that we need to know
- 21:11things on and on and on. It's about information, knowing
- 21:18information. And most Christians would say
- 21:21that's our problem is we have all this het knowledge, but our
- 21:25life is just I want someone to talk to me about my life.
- 21:30You know, how do I deal with this struggle in this battle?
- 21:33I don't want just as het knowledge stuff.
- 21:35I want someone to teach me some real life experiences.
- 21:40And what they don't understand is that when you have this het
- 21:43knowledge of the gospel and the and the victory that has been
- 21:46won in Christ Jesus, it will deal with your problems, your
- 21:50real life problems. The problem is, is you want God
- 21:54to do another work in your life. In your experience, you want
- 21:58someone to lay hands on you and get God to do another work when
- 22:02you could take a shortcut and just believe the work that he's
- 22:04already done and let that change your life.
- 22:07You need to hear it over and over again.
- 22:09And Paul is saying you guys have heard it like everyone else
- 22:12heard it in the world. And even the faithful minister,
- 22:15Minister, I'll name the guy, it's the Taffers.
- 22:18He's the faithful minister that you heard it from.
- 22:20Believe it, understand it and walk in it.
- 22:23It's what I take from that so. That's good.
- 22:26That's good information, Melvin. What your question was earlier
- 22:35to me, like I kind of think the line and Andrew was saying like
- 22:40to me, OK, so continuously every day there is children being
- 22:45born, right? And there is creatures being
- 22:48born. And so that tells me that God
- 22:51wants us to share the Gospel with everyone that we possibly
- 22:56can. And I had failed in that many
- 22:58times, right? That that to me that is the
- 23:01point. Whether it was done back in 7080
- 23:04or whatever, that really doesn't matter for me.
- 23:06But anyway, one thing I see in this verse 8 here that stood out
- 23:14to me is he is commenting them for their love in the spirit.
- 23:20Not just any love, but their love in the spirit.
- 23:22If you look up that word love, it's a copy love, which is a
- 23:25sacrificial love. And it's a type of love that can
- 23:30only obviously come from being in Christ or having the Spirit,
- 23:36right? Because you can love someone
- 23:41superficially, like just, you know, on the surface or
- 23:44whatever, but he was commenting them on their love in the Spirit
- 23:49and in the Holy Spirit through the Holy Spirit.
- 23:52And so I just stood out to me on verse 8.
- 23:56Good point and and. I looked, I just clicked on this
- 24:05guy's name and he's, I only mentioned three times, but
- 24:12again, I'm just to kind of, I think this is what he's saying
- 24:16in chapter 4 of Colossians verse 12, he makes the comment, he
- 24:20says a pap, a papyrus. Who is one of you, a servant of
- 24:27Christ? Saluteth you always laboring
- 24:30fervently for you in prayers that you may stand perfect and
- 24:34complete in the will of God. I mean, do you think that that
- 24:40means, I kind of think it means he was kind of maybe originally
- 24:45from there or a part of their group?
- 24:47You know, like he's one of them. I like in a literal sense, like
- 24:51one of their own, which is interesting.
- 24:54I don't know if that means he's heard the gospel somewhere else
- 24:57and he's the one brought it to that, you know, like he's heard
- 24:59it somewhere else and brought it to his own community.
- 25:02Or if he just comes in there and is a part of that church from
- 25:05somewhere else, but he's called one of their own.
- 25:08And I just thought that was kind of an interesting tidbit that he
- 25:11is called one of their own there in chapter 4.
- 25:13But that was really all I had on verse 7.
- 25:17Yeah, very interesting. Yeah, he was.
- 25:18He was definitely. What do they call that?
- 25:20Indigenous? Yeah.
- 25:22A native to that area. Yeah, for sure.
- 25:25Yeah, those are the things that kind of stand out to me about it
- 25:28as well, is that Epaphras was like a missionary out traveling
- 25:33along with the apostle Paul, but he recognized Colossi as his
- 25:37place. He was to them a faithful
- 25:40minister. He was from there originally.
- 25:42And like you, like Aaron pointed out later in Colossians, he
- 25:45actually refers to him as one of you.
- 25:48And so it's a a little subtle challenge to all of us.
- 25:52Are you of somebody? Are you of a place?
- 25:55Do you have a community? Do you have people who you call
- 25:58your own? Sometimes we can get so
- 26:00exclusive in our Christianity that we belong nowhere.
- 26:03We call no people our own. Nobody can fit with our
- 26:06theology. And we're like an island to
- 26:09ourselves, right? Like, this is me.
- 26:11And Paul clearly labeled Apophis as one of them.
- 26:17And so he had faithfully ministered to them and he
- 26:20clearly identified with them. Whether that's culturally or
- 26:23somehow on a familial level, I don't know exactly.
- 26:26Nobody really knows, but it's a it's a good way to argue for the
- 26:31idea that you should belong to a group somewhere.
- 26:34You should be known in a group somewhere.
- 26:36You should not be a stranger to everybody.
- 26:39Somewhere there should be people who know you and you know them,
- 26:41right? Yeah, and he was obviously back
- 26:45and forth with Paul about this there in verse 70 declared unto
- 26:50Paul or his people about their love and stuff.
- 26:53So he was he was definitely active in in between there.
- 26:58OK, verse 9 says for this, 'cause we also, since the day we
- 27:03heard it, do not cease to pray for you and to desire that ye
- 27:07might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all
- 27:11wisdom and spiritual understanding.
- 27:13And I'm going to stop there because there's just too much to
- 27:15cover. Even though there's not a period
- 27:18there. But I find this really
- 27:21fascinating. And back to what Andrew was
- 27:24saying earlier, it is interesting that Paul, when he
- 27:28writes this, he says that his desire would be that they would
- 27:32be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and
- 27:35spiritual understanding. Not to get some experience, not
- 27:38to get, you know, over into whatever else, but you
- 27:41understand and know God as if that was the solution to their
- 27:45problem, if they had one. And I just that is not preached
- 27:50in the in the churches today. It just isn't.
- 27:53And it's, it's frustrating actually about when you, when
- 27:57you think about that, isn't it, Andrew?
- 28:00That is the big missing link, but a lot of other stuff is
- 28:06preached. Something that connects with
- 28:07your emotions and gives you a hope of deliverance, maybe
- 28:11someday. I felt like I made progress this
- 28:15Sunday. I felt like somebody finally
- 28:17understood me. I talked to so and so and he
- 28:20hurt me out and I feel a lot better.
- 28:23I'm finding hope I think. I'm going to make it.
- 28:25I see a little. Light at the end of the tunnel
- 28:28and it's human humanology, if you want to call it, or whatever
- 28:32humanism it's, it's trying to deal with your problems and
- 28:38what. Paul's whole point of Colossians
- 28:41is, is that we understand the effects of the cross, the effect
- 28:45that that blood had, the fact that that cross had in nailing
- 28:50all the ordinances. And our problems to the cross.
- 28:53The completion. The completion.
- 28:55That that worked in the cross. Had for our souls, for our
- 28:59lives, the delivering power and over principalities and powers
- 29:04and like those are all things that we need to understand
- 29:06spiritual things that we need to understand so we don't fall for
- 29:10this stupid humanist experiential failing.
- 29:16Things that give you a hope, that is, that is you can see and
- 29:21feel, but it it, it leaves you hanging, but it keeps you coming
- 29:25back to another human being. That he himself doesn't have the
- 29:30answer and is trying to give you another human experience.
- 29:34We need a Jesus experience, a Christ risen Savior experience,
- 29:41someone that fully won the victory and someone that is
- 29:45fully able to to deliver anyone that would come unto him and.
- 29:50That is what is missing, Leon. Like you were saying, it is
- 29:53missing and it comes again, he says.
- 29:58He's praying for you all the time, like again all the time.
- 30:02And what's he praying for? Understanding that they, they
- 30:09would understand what they heard, you know, spiritual
- 30:13wisdom, spiritual understanding. And it all makes sense to me,
- 30:17But evidently it's not very popular.
- 30:21Yeah, it requires a little bit of attention to the matter.
- 30:24Actually, it's not just ear butter.
- 30:28Ear fluff. No one.
- 30:30Yeah, I think the reason that this kind of thing is not
- 30:33preached or taught, you would say, in most churches is because
- 30:38in most churches there's pastors or other people that are trying
- 30:42to be between God and man or between Jesus and man.
- 30:46They're trying to be the media here, so to speak.
- 30:50And so Paul is making it very clear, but we just read in verse
- 30:55seven, I think it was that he said that ye knew the grace of
- 30:59the Lord. You know, he's making a point.
- 31:02We brought it to you, you heard it, but you know it like in
- 31:07other words, it's the idea is is that we are in connection with
- 31:13God through the Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ dying on
- 31:16the cross and resurrecting again.
- 31:19Then we have connection. We come to the throne of grace
- 31:22boldly like we read in Hebrews right.
- 31:24And so that is what is the way the Bible lays it out.
- 31:30But most people they want to be in between.
- 31:35It seems like man and God and it's just I don't know why.
- 31:39I guess it's a maybe it's power that they're after or trying to
- 31:43look more spiritual or whatever. I mean, I've even myself have
- 31:49fallen into that trap, so to speak, where people are coming
- 31:52to me and asking me for wisdom or whatever.
- 31:56And I'm start to get puffed up and think that I'm actually
- 32:00somebody like and, and, and really all we need to be doing
- 32:06is pointing them to Jesus and, and his gospel, right?
- 32:12And that Jesus can heal you and, and fix you and, you know, guide
- 32:19them to that and not try. And you know me.
- 32:22It's not about about me. I'm just bringing the good news,
- 32:27not the good news itself. So I think that's for a lot of
- 32:31times it's misinterpreted. I do think there is an
- 32:42interesting verse in Hebrews, Hebrews chapter 3, when he says,
- 32:48well I'll start in verse 8, he says harden not your hearts as
- 32:51in the provocation in the day of temptation in the wilderness,
- 32:56when your father's tempted me, proved me and saw my works 40
- 33:01years. Wherefore I was grieved with
- 33:04that generation and said they do always air in their heart and
- 33:09they have not known my ways. Now they're I think that's such
- 33:14an astounding verse that they could have experienced all those
- 33:19things. Psalm partook of them either the
- 33:22manna then all those things and never did know who God really
- 33:27was. They didn't really know God's
- 33:28ways like they experienced them. You know, as as a partaker of
- 33:33the benefits of them, but they didn't really know his ways.
- 33:37And I think that that's what Paul part of what he's saying
- 33:40here anyway, what I see he's saying here is he wants them to
- 33:44be filled with knowledge and understanding of God, right, of
- 33:48really who he is. What you know, like, because,
- 33:51like I said, just because, just because you attend church, you
- 33:57call yourself religious, you do religious things don't mean that
- 34:02you know God, that you know his ways.
- 34:05And that's what I think he's wanting them to do is, is to
- 34:08really know God's ways and who he is.
- 34:11And, and I mean, I just granted, I'll, I'll allow that there's
- 34:16two sides to that. There is things that the Spirit
- 34:19just reveals to a person that that's his job, right?
- 34:23He's a revealer of truth. But I also think that there is
- 34:27something to be said for knowing God's word because that is where
- 34:33the testimony of God is, right? It's in his word.
- 34:36That's that's where you would know the story of God.
- 34:39I mean, whether you're somebody tells it to you, you read it, or
- 34:42however you come across it, you learn God's ways by his word,
- 34:47right? I mean, that is his, that is his
- 34:50testifying of himself. And then the Spirit reveals
- 34:54those truths that you could have never got with an education or
- 34:59with, you know, like worldly wisdom.
- 35:02But I don't know. That's what I thought about when
- 35:05that's all that words. Good points.
- 35:09Yeah, this, we mentioned it in the previous study already of
- 35:14the first part of Colossians. But many times when you hear
- 35:16about someone that's a Christian or a new Christian or something,
- 35:21you only start praying for them when they're having struggles,
- 35:23when they're facing opposition, when they're having some sort of
- 35:26difficulty. But here, when he heard of their
- 35:29love toward one another, when he heard of their faith and all
- 35:32these positive things that he was hearing, it says we cease
- 35:36not to pray. From the day we heard of it, we
- 35:38heard that you loved each other. And so we started praying.
- 35:41And most Christians, like we kind of pointed out, you already
- 35:44would jump to verse 10, at least the first portion of verse 10,
- 35:48and say, I'm praying that you would walk worthy of the Lord.
- 35:51I'm praying that you would have a lot of fruit.
- 35:55But the apostle Paul does it differently.
- 35:57He says, I pray that you would be filled with the knowledge of
- 36:01his will with all spiritual wisdom and understanding so that
- 36:05you will walk worthy in the Lord so that you would bear much
- 36:09fruit and so that again, full circle, you'd be filled with the
- 36:13knowledge of his will. I know you're we're jumping
- 36:15ahead here a little bit, but your first thought shouldn't be.
- 36:19I want them to walk pure, pure and free from sin.
- 36:21I want them to do a really good job.
- 36:23I want them to share the gospel. Well, what they need is
- 36:26knowledge of God's will is so understanding.
- 36:29What they need is to know Christ and to revel in His goodness and
- 36:33His grace. Don't preach righteousness
- 36:35imputed and then quickly say, but you need to get to work.
- 36:39Don't preach your position in Christ and say you're dead and
- 36:42freed from sin, but now you better go and walk in
- 36:44righteousness. Let someone be saturated with
- 36:48the goodness and grace of God and be filled with the knowledge
- 36:51of His will, and it will produce verse 10 so that you might walk
- 36:55worthy. It's when your understanding is
- 36:57correct, when your mind is in the right place, when your heart
- 37:00is fixated on the love of God, the grace of God, your
- 37:03undeserving acceptance by God, that the walk starts to
- 37:09straighten out, that the life starts to line with the truth
- 37:13that it holds. We first get that part clear and
- 37:17right. And so even though these verses
- 37:19are 910 like 1 after the other, I think there should be a heavy
- 37:22emphasis on verse 9 and the result will be verse 10.
- 37:27Absolutely. I I mean they're particularly in
- 37:30that order for a reason and not the other way around.
- 37:34You know, I mean it. What causes us to walk worthy of
- 37:39the Lord unto all pleasing? You know, we got to have a
- 37:43reason to go there. We can't, we can't walk that
- 37:45walk unless we understand the God that we're actually supposed
- 37:49to be walking after. So that that is really good
- 37:52stuff. Verse 10 that you might walk
- 37:55worthy of. This has been mentioned already
- 37:57of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good
- 38:00work and increasing in the knowledge of God.
- 38:02And this just goes on and on. By the way, it is one paragraph.
- 38:05Verse 9 through 17 is all one paragraph it is and and he was
- 38:11on a roll here. He just he just kept on going
- 38:13about what what he expected here and increasing in the knowledge
- 38:18you got. I just this is I got a quite a
- 38:21bit of highlighting on my Bible. This section is so good stuff,
- 38:24Andrew. Yeah, this is what he's
- 38:27building. Up to this whole.
- 38:29Point is being explained. Right in front of us and we
- 38:32always look right over, right so that you might walk worthy of
- 38:36the Lord unto all pleasing being fruitful in every good work.
- 38:40By what means? Based on knowledge and wisdom
- 38:44and spiritual understanding. Our position in Christ.
- 38:48Then he tells us where our strength comes from, our power
- 38:50comes from. But you said a whole list of the
- 38:54work of Christ, and he keeps building that up all the way to
- 38:57chapter 2. And what's this whole point?
- 39:00If we have spiritual wisdom and spiritual understanding, we know
- 39:03what our Savior did and we believe it and we know where the
- 39:06victory is at. We won't be beguiled by some
- 39:09man. We won't be beguiled and
- 39:11bewitched and taken away by some humanistic experience because
- 39:16we're smarter than that. We have more wisdom than that.
- 39:20We have spiritual understanding. We, we know what Christ did and
- 39:25we have tasted it and we're walking in it and it, it's real.
- 39:30It's not. You see, when you receive that
- 39:34knowledge, it does affect your whole body.
- 39:37It does affect your whole mental state.
- 39:40When, when the problem what we're having is, is we're always
- 39:44trying to water soil, thinking we're watering a plant.
- 39:48You know, the plant has to 1st be planted like the seed has to
- 39:51be planted, then it grows, and then you spray it for parasites
- 39:56or whatever. But we're walking around
- 39:58spraying dirt hoping it'll bring forth fruit like there's a plant
- 40:02there or something. And we need to focus on the fact
- 40:05that somebody needs to hear the gospel and let the gospel sprout
- 40:11some fruit in your life, not the other way around.
- 40:15So we'll get that cart in front of the horse all the time, and
- 40:20I'm still guilty of it. You know, this is such a faith
- 40:23challenge. You know, we're, I can sit here
- 40:26and say the truth confidently and like, you know, bash the the
- 40:31guiling and the witching of men or whatever, but it's a
- 40:34challenge. I am so tempted myself when
- 40:38things are hard to go find somebody that can help me.
- 40:42And there's a place for that. But we need to find somebody
- 40:47that will help us in pointing us to the victor.
- 40:50There's already been 1 you see, lot we can so easily, especially
- 40:56when we're going through very difficult times as it's, I know
- 40:59for a fact that it doesn't matter how much you know, you
- 41:02can easily get drawn away and your eyes and your mind can get
- 41:05focused on the dark side. You know, everything is just
- 41:08coming at you all at once and it gets very difficult and you can
- 41:13get off track. And that's when you can use
- 41:16another brother a, a, a Paffers or a Paul or somebody that would
- 41:20say, Hey, you know what? The victor's been won.
- 41:24You need some more spiritual renewing of your mind and you
- 41:26need to remember what Christ did for you.
- 41:28That's what you need right now. And that's how we help each
- 41:31other. It points us back to the cross
- 41:33instead of you know what? I'll I'll be Jesus's.
- 41:36Feet here for you right now and try to somehow like Melvin was
- 41:40saying, trying to be the savior in someone else's life.
- 41:45No, it's they just need to hear about what the Savior's already
- 41:48done. That's good.
- 41:52Dangerously close to preaching there, Andrea.
- 41:54That's really good. Yeah, so like like we read in in
- 42:00verse 6 that he commented them for knowing the grace of God,
- 42:05which I pointed out was, you know, unmerited love of God
- 42:08towards us through Jesus dying in the cross and resurrecting
- 42:11again. But you know, then he says in
- 42:13verse 9 in the end there that he wants them to be filled with the
- 42:18knowledge of, of his will in all wisdom and spiritual
- 42:22understanding. And then he says that in verse
- 42:2610 that he wants them to increase in the knowledge of
- 42:30God. And so my point in all these
- 42:33things that he is pointing out that he's praying for them and
- 42:36that they need, you know, spiritual understanding and,
- 42:39and, and all these things is in Christ.
- 42:42It's in Christ. It's not some other, you know,
- 42:46whatever feeling or or thing that is coming from whatever it
- 42:52is our position in Christ and understanding that is where
- 42:57these this knowledge of God, this knowing what his will is
- 43:02for us and spiritual understanding is coming from.
- 43:06I like so well in Galatians I had this verse or not Galatians,
- 43:10Second Corinthians 11/3. Paul says this and this, this
- 43:14verse came to my mind and it's so good.
- 43:16I've come to this verse often he says, but I fear he's fearing
- 43:21for the Corinthian church. He says, but I fear lest by any
- 43:25means as the serpent begoud Eve through his subtility, so your
- 43:30mind should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in
- 43:34Christ. And I think it's so good.
- 43:37We need to understand who we are in Christ and that is where our
- 43:42power comes from and our spiritual understanding and all
- 43:45those things come from. And when we understand that,
- 43:51everything else is going to fall into place, you know, like
- 43:54fruit, bringing forth fruit and all those loving our brother,
- 43:59you know, all those things fall into line.
- 44:03And oftentimes we try and get those other things in line
- 44:06before we understand our positioning price.
- 44:11That's good, Aaron. It's I was looking for a verse
- 44:21as I was talking, I just thought of something as a as you all was
- 44:24talking there Anyway, I'll just, I couldn't find it right quick.
- 44:28But it I think it's interesting that he makes a circle here
- 44:31because he says that he, he was praying that they might be
- 44:37filled with the knowledge of his will and all wisdom and
- 44:40spiritual understanding. Verse 9, as you all pointed out,
- 44:44the the product of that will be when they get this understanding
- 44:49that they will be able to walk and all pleasing and then
- 44:52produce fruit. And then he says and increasing
- 44:56in the knowledge of God. So I almost want to go back to
- 44:58what I said earlier in the sense that that it's it's like you
- 45:04could you could have this so shallow.
- 45:08A person does not have to come to some great understanding of
- 45:13all kinds of mysteries to be saved.
- 45:15It, it's, it's, it's a very simple, I mean, like, like
- 45:18Melvin read there the simplicity of this in Christ.
- 45:20It, it is so such a, a simple story.
- 45:26And you could, you could understand that and be saved by
- 45:29that by believing that simple story that you heard.
- 45:34And then you move on from that to what I said earlier and you
- 45:38actually start being like Moses was and you start having this
- 45:43relationship with God in which you learn who he is.
- 45:47You know, it's like the verse I was looking for is when it's
- 45:51when Aaron and Miriam are kind of rebelling against him and and
- 45:55God calls him out and he says, hey, if I'm going to show 1 of
- 45:59you all something, it's going to be in a vision or in a dream.
- 46:03He says Moses is not that way. I talked to him face to face,
- 46:06right? Like we he knows me.
- 46:10It's not in dark sayings. I think he says in that verse,
- 46:13it's not in this in this kind of at a distance, at this friend of
- 46:20mine that's at a distance. We have a relationship and I
- 46:23think that that is what to me, that's the second layer of this
- 46:27and increasing in the knowledge of God.
- 46:29I think you go, you should go your lifetime and and learn more
- 46:35and more of who God really is. Like I see it.
- 46:39I see it when I'm going through even especially an Old
- 46:43Testament, like I see lots of things about God as I teach
- 46:46through it on Wednesday nights. I see these things about God
- 46:50and, and I do, I grow in my knowledge of who he is based on
- 46:56those things that I see. And I, and I think that that's,
- 46:58so I just said that to distinguish between a very
- 47:01shallow understanding will get you saved, but you can increase
- 47:05in knowledge of God as you go along.
- 47:09Absolutely. Which will make you more
- 47:12profitable to the other Saints and things like that.
- 47:15Yep. Damn.
- 47:16Yeah, Aaron read this verse before, but Epaphras in verse 12
- 47:21of chapter 4, he prays for the Colossians also.
- 47:24He says he's always laboring fervently in prayers that ye
- 47:29stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
- 47:33And so God wants, Paul wants us to stand complete in the will of
- 47:39God, but he understands that it's not through external
- 47:43instruction. It's not through touch, not
- 47:45taste, not handle, not as he's going to expound on in the next
- 47:48chapter, that you understand and know who God is.
- 47:50It is only by grace through faith.
- 47:52It is through understanding of who he is and what he's done
- 47:56that we gain that access to God and have that relationship to
- 48:00him. And so that's what helps you to
- 48:03walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, all pleasing.
- 48:06And then like Aaron said, I was going to point out the same
- 48:09thing. He he starts with knowledge and
- 48:11he goes back to knowledge the same way as in second Peter
- 48:14chapter 1 where he talks about give all diligence.
- 48:18He says give all diligence to add to your faith, virtue and to
- 48:21virtue knowledge. So you need faith, simple gospel
- 48:24faith, just believe Christ what he's done, and then you add to
- 48:27that virtue and then knowledge. Then he says temperance and
- 48:30patience and godliness, brotherly kindness, charity.
- 48:34If these things be in you in a in a bound, they shall make you
- 48:37that you be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of
- 48:41our Lord Jesus. So he starts with knowledge and
- 48:43he wraps it all up with knowledge again.
- 48:45So the whole time you're constantly increasing in the
- 48:48knowledge of who he is, not just like my my one friend.
- 48:54He quotes a very Mennonite pastor as as saying something
- 48:58along this line. He says at our church, we don't
- 49:00believe theology. You know, he said it in a very
- 49:03Mennonite way, right? What he was saying was we don't
- 49:06believe in this idea of just arguing about sentiment or the
- 49:11way that you got to say it or what this theologian said versus
- 49:15what this theologian said. What this plain simple Mennonite
- 49:18pastor was trying to say was we believe the Bible.
- 49:22We just simply trust who God is. So the knowledge that we have is
- 49:25not just, you know, doctrinal statements, it's knowing God
- 49:31personally and and that results in an actual walk that actually
- 49:37pleases the Lord. Sometimes people have this
- 49:39mentality that nothing we do impresses him, nothing we do
- 49:43pleases him. But he says if you're filled
- 49:45with the knowledge of His will and your mind is fixated on who
- 49:48he is and your attention and your mind is set on things
- 49:52above, then you can walk worthy of the Lord.
- 49:55You can actually please Him in all things.
- 49:58You can live a life that actually honors God and actually
- 50:01pleases Him, where God smiles upon you.
- 50:04And as you're doing good works, you'll be filled again with the
- 50:07knowledge of His will more and more so, or the knowledge of God
- 50:10Himself. Man, that's so good that is that
- 50:15is good information. I'm going to we'll go do 11 yet
- 50:19just we'll keep it as concise as we can strengthen with all might
- 50:24according to his glorious power unto all patience and
- 50:27long-suffering with joyfulness. And I would just say based on
- 50:31the previous verse here, and I'll let you go, Andrew, if you
- 50:35want to be strengthened with All Might, get more knowledge of
- 50:38God. If you want glorious power and
- 50:42his glorious power, more knowledge, patience, more
- 50:46knowledge long. So you want to be
- 50:47long-suffering, learn of God, learn.
- 50:51Do you want to be joyful? Learn of him, Learn of him.
- 50:55Learn of God. That's what he's saying.
- 50:57He's saying the solution to joyful, the way to get choice of
- 51:01joyfulness is to know God. Isn't that cool?
- 51:04That's so simple and so clean and.
- 51:08Absolutely beautiful. I'm I mean, I always thought I
- 51:13understood these passages pretty good, but man, just going
- 51:16through it verse by verse again, it's just he.
- 51:20Like, like God. Does over and over and over and
- 51:23over. Tells the same thing over and
- 51:25over to try to get it through our thick skulls that you might
- 51:29strengthen it with All Might. So if we're strengthened with
- 51:33All Might from Christ, then that kind of covers it all, doesn't
- 51:37it? That covers all the might that
- 51:41we need. That's every might, that's all
- 51:44of them, and also every power. So that brings us to this.
- 51:50If all the victory and all the power is from Christ and that is
- 51:54the source where it all comes from, then why don't we point
- 51:59people to that every time there's a lack of power, a lack
- 52:03of wisdom, a lack of whatever? If that is the source, then why
- 52:08are we trying to stand in the gap?
- 52:11You know, that brings us? See, I just thought of the.
- 52:16Book of Colossians in a nutshell.
- 52:19The it's. To tell you the full power and
- 52:24the victory and everything that is in Christ Jesus.
- 52:26The true gospel that delivers you and changes you, but a
- 52:31gospel that has been messed with is not a gospel like Paul says
- 52:36in Galatians, in the book of Colossians says many have been
- 52:42have spoiled the gospel of Christ, it's ruined.
- 52:45What do you think when you think of that most?
- 52:48Well, I shouldn't say that. How do you know when the gospel?
- 52:51Was messed with. It's when they say Jesus wants
- 52:55to be everything in your life but.
- 52:58You know when they go but. Jesus brought you to victory,
- 53:01but Jesus washed your sins away. But you need to do this, this
- 53:05this this Jesus made every day alike but.
- 53:09Eat this day. Jesus did made everything's
- 53:13right, you know he fulfilled the law.
- 53:15But don't eat this meat. What that is, it's a perfectly a
- 53:24perfect can or cup of coffee. That is the absolute best
- 53:29coffee. But somebody peed in it and I'm
- 53:34supposed to drink it. And that is what we're drinking
- 53:36in most churches today. Oh, we share the gospel.
- 53:40We love the gospel of Jesus Christ, but it's defiled.
- 53:46It's beguiled. Somebody peed in it.
- 53:49Yeah. They say the truth, but then
- 53:52they ruin it. They ruin it with a little bit
- 53:54of poison. You know, you can drink a cup of
- 53:57coffee, that is all perfect except one drop of poison.
- 54:00It will kill you. So I think that's a nutshell of
- 54:05the book of Colossians is that I don't care how much someone says
- 54:09they preach the gospel. Even the prosperity preachers,
- 54:13they preached a lot about understanding who we are in
- 54:16Christ Jesus. But then they come around a
- 54:19little part of the law. Oh, if you give God money, God
- 54:22will give you what your flesh wants.
- 54:25God is just waiting to get you what your flesh wants.
- 54:29You know it's. Why pee in a good perfect cup of
- 54:33coffee, you know? Yeah, and, and the word spoiled
- 54:37you. What spoiled actually means to
- 54:40take the power away from the value away from Like if if a if
- 54:44a enemy spoils a city, they take all the valuables you think
- 54:48about. Like when you spoil, you know
- 54:51when the God of the word of God gets spoiled.
- 54:53All the powers gone, all the values gone, all you have is an
- 54:56empty cuss that's worth nothing. Yeah, All right.
- 55:00The thing that came to my mind, I guess when I read this, it
- 55:02says according to his glorious power, you know, there's so many
- 55:06Christians that are longing or seeking after, you know, the
- 55:11power of the spirit and the power of God.
- 55:13You know, the, they're doing whatever they possibly can, you
- 55:17know, to gain that power, to try and get that power or more of it
- 55:22or whatever. And I think we do, you know, get
- 55:28more power. What is how does he say why we
- 55:30get courting his glorious power through the knowledge of God,
- 55:34like you pointed out, Leon, through understanding who God is
- 55:37and having a relationship with him.
- 55:39But the thing that point that stands out to me is this
- 55:42glorious power. Look what he says about His
- 55:45glorious power. He says it is unto all patience,
- 55:48long-suffering, with joyfulness. So in other words, many people
- 55:53want His power. But the is He says that that
- 55:56with that power there should be patience and long-suffering and
- 56:02joyfulness. You don't hear people talk about
- 56:04that so much, right, when they're talking about the power
- 56:08of the glorious power of God. But he says that's what it
- 56:11should look like. It should be patience,
- 56:13long-suffering and joyfulness. And so anyway, that just stood
- 56:17out to me, and in the mighty way.
- 56:20Absolutely. Yeah.
- 56:24I think that a lot of those characteristics that he says are
- 56:28going to come out like patience and long-suffering and
- 56:33joyfulness are they are. Like.
- 56:38Attributes of God, would you agree with, you know, like he is
- 56:42the Bible talks about how patient and long-suffering he is
- 56:47and real joy would come from him and I and I just think that
- 56:50that's I do think that that is almost a as you learn who God
- 56:56is. It is almost a byproduct.
- 56:59You you what's I mean, there's other verses like that.
- 57:02You're going to become like him, right?
- 57:04I mean that is going to come out of you as you learn who he is.
- 57:08Then it is going to make you increase in patience and
- 57:11long-suffering and joyfulness because there is AI mean.
- 57:17I see that as I as I really understand who he is.
- 57:21It makes it makes me joyful. It makes me more want to be
- 57:28long-suffering than I am because I see his, you know, like the
- 57:32what does he say? The goodness of God leadeth thee
- 57:37to repentance, You know, like I mean, you know, you see that and
- 57:40it produces the same in you. So I really do.
- 57:42I think that that's those are characteristics of himself that
- 57:46will come out and you as you learn of who he is.
- 57:50But. Yeah, that's good stuff.
- 57:53I am. Nope.
- 57:57You're me. I got you.
- 57:59Thank you. This is obviously still part of
- 58:02the Apostle Paul's prayer. You said earlier, Leon, that
- 58:05from verse 9 to 17 was all one paragraph, but it is actually
- 58:09all still just one sentence. And I think you may have meant
- 58:11that, but it just keeps going. It's this is 1 prayer
- 58:15strengthened with all might. So what are we going to need to
- 58:21progress and walk worthy of the Lord?
- 58:23We need the strength of his might, all of might, like Andrew
- 58:26mentioned, because like Melvin mentioned, I'm kind of repeating
- 58:31a lot of what you've said. There's going to be difficulty
- 58:34and trials in the Christian life.
- 58:37You're going to need something that's outside of this world to
- 58:40anchor your soul to, as we learned of Hebrews.
- 58:43Do you need something that's consistent and steadfast and
- 58:46immovable that will keep your soul?
- 58:48Because now that you have the gospel, you're going to have
- 58:52difficulties and trials and tribulations and all kinds of
- 58:55sufferings going to come upon you.
- 58:56And you're going to need the strength of God and the glorious
- 59:00power of God so that you can go through difficulties and trials
- 59:04with patience and joyfulness even when you're suffering for a
- 59:08long time. I thought of Romans chapter 8
- 59:13where he says in verse 11, but if the spirit of him that raised
- 59:16up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ
- 59:20from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by the Spirit
- 59:24that dwells in you. So understanding the in in
- 59:27knowing what Christ has done back there in that he was
- 59:31crucified and raised from the dead empowers us here and now.
- 59:36In Ephesians chapter 1, he's has a very similar prayer, but he
- 59:40kind of expands it even further after praying that the eyes of
- 59:44their understanding would be enlightened, that they would
- 59:46know what is their calling, what the riches are, the inheritance,
- 59:50the greatness of His power to us.
- 59:52Word He says in verse 19, what is the exceeding greatness of
- 59:56His power to us? Word according to the working of
- 59:59His mighty power, which He wrought in Christ.
- 1:00:03So there is an exceeding great power toward us.
- 1:00:06That God wrought in Christ, he's not wroting it in you.
- 1:00:11He's not trying to work a great power in you.
- 1:00:13He wrought a great power when it says in verse 18 or verse 20
- 1:00:18rather, which He wrought in Christ when He raised him from
- 1:00:22the dead and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly
- 1:00:25places. There was a power that is now at
- 1:00:28our disposal by understanding what He has done that we have
- 1:00:33access to because He wrought it in Christ.
- 1:00:37And it's too many Christians are sitting around waiting for
- 1:00:40something to happen, waiting for some spiritual gift, waiting for
- 1:00:43some power from on high. When He says understand and know
- 1:00:47who I am, go out and serve people, the power and the
- 1:00:50Spirit, all that will come. He'll give you patience and
- 1:00:53long-suffering and joyfulness through it all because of the
- 1:00:56great power that He wrought when He raised up Christ from the
- 1:00:58dead. Hallelujah.
- 1:01:01That's like drinking V8. That's good stuff.
- 1:01:07That's a good. Cup of coffee.
- 1:01:09Yeah, for sure. All right.
