- 0:00What's up everybody, Charlie Marlow here got to jump on and
- 0:03talk about this post game press conference last night after the
- 0:06Cardinals lost to the Rockies. Ali Marmole, the skipper and
- 0:10Derrick Gould of the Saint Louis Post Dispatch kind of going at
- 0:13it, I think it's fair to say. First of all, you should check
- 0:16out the clip. Valley Sports Midwest put it out
- 0:20in its entirety. I believe the clip they put out
- 0:23was about 6 minutes, I think in 22 seconds.
- 0:26So you should watch the whole clip so you have some context
- 0:29and perspective of what I'm about to talk about.
- 0:31Beautiful day, beautiful morning here in St.
- 0:33Louis, MO. Not too hot, not too cold, but
- 0:38OK. So first of all, look, Ali
- 0:40Marmol is frustrated. We all get it.
- 0:43The Cardinals lose their second game of the three so far to the
- 0:48Rockies. You have the series finale
- 0:50today, but just check the old standings.
- 0:54The Rockies are one of the worst teams in all of baseball.
- 0:57The Cardinals are now in last place in the National League
- 1:02Central. But I just, I just thought that
- 1:04the post game was really, really interesting.
- 1:08So there were there were several questions between Derek and
- 1:13Ollie that led to what what happened at the end.
- 1:16So and and look, I'm paraphrasing here.
- 1:19So, so please go watch the clip, but I think it started with so,
- 1:24so Derek was asking about errors, but also, you know, non
- 1:28plays that aren't called errors. And he used the, the phrase
- 1:32attention to detail, which I, I don't, I don't take offense to.
- 1:38I, I think Ali, Ali took some offense to that insinuating and
- 1:43he explained this, that he looks at attention to detail like the
- 1:48guys aren't prepared. So you can understand why a
- 1:52manager would take offense of that.
- 1:53Although I don't think that's what Derek meant.
- 1:56I'm not sure. I don't want to speak for him.
- 1:58But sometimes also you just don't say the perfect thing.
- 2:03I don't think in that specific case Derek had any ill intent.
- 2:07But I think, look, man, Ollie is frustrated.
- 2:10This team is not very good at all.
- 2:13They're very mediocre. They've played better, obviously
- 2:16the last three weeks or so. Let's give them credit.
- 2:18But they're not a good team and they're losing games to one of
- 2:21the worst teams in baseball. So, OK, that was the that was
- 2:25the first one, not, not a big deal.
- 2:26And I get it. Look, if you're a manager and a
- 2:30coach and, and, and you think somebody's calling you out that
- 2:33you're not getting your guys prepared, I would take offense
- 2:36to that as well. On the other hand, though, let's
- 2:38be real. Do you do you think answer me
- 2:41this? Do you think Ali Marmol and his
- 2:44coaching staff, do they do a great job of getting these guys
- 2:48prepared? Do they do they add value to the
- 2:51team? I think that's a fair question
- 2:53to ask. Certainly after after a couple
- 2:57seasons, especially, especially look a couple seasons ago when
- 3:00the guys the Cardinals expected to be the pitching coach and
- 3:05Mike Maddox and the hitting coach and Jeff Albert left
- 3:09pretty unexpectedly. So I think it's certainly fair
- 3:13to question if this if this coaching staff and and Ali
- 3:17Marmol staff and himself, you know, are they a value add when
- 3:23it comes to helping this team get ready.
- 3:25Now, again, look, I've said this a million times.
- 3:29Ali is not the the first guy I'd ever blame.
- 3:32Coaching staff is not the first group of guys I'd ever blame.
- 3:36It's it's Mosaic, it's DeWitt. And really, especially
- 3:40offensively, the first month or so, it comes down to the
- 3:43players. It comes down to no one Arenado,
- 3:45Paul Goldschmidt, guys that are making twenty five $30 million a
- 3:48year to come through. But in this particular video
- 3:51we're doing, we're talking about what happened last night and the
- 3:53coaching staff. So that's why I brought that up.
- 3:56And then I I think the next question, you know, Derek asked
- 3:59about the the middle of the order has to get going.
- 4:03Like I just said, I mean, look, it's it's got to be Nolan
- 4:05Arenado at some point and Paul Goldschmidt that leads this
- 4:08offense. And and Ollie kind of I think in
- 4:12fun, but sarcastically said, well, yeah, isn't that every
- 4:15offense? Doesn't every offense the middle
- 4:18of the order? Isn't that where the production
- 4:20comes? And I get it.
- 4:21I also, I don't I don't think Derek was asking these questions
- 4:26to try to get Ollie. And I'm not down there anymore.
- 4:29OK, just so everybody knows. So I don't know the dynamics
- 4:31between all of the reporters. I really don't.
- 4:34I have not been down at Cardinals on any type of
- 4:36consistent basis since what, 2021?
- 4:40And really my last two years in TV were weird.
- 4:43COVID years, 2020 and 2021 where you didn't even have great
- 4:48access at all because of all the Zoom crap.
- 4:50So I honestly feel like I've been super detached from being
- 4:54there and knowing the players and knowing any of the staff
- 4:57really. I mean, honestly, since that
- 4:59spring training 2020 when COVID hit and the whole world changed,
- 5:03that's the last time I really was around the players a lot.
- 5:06And that's freaking what we're talking over four years ago.
- 5:10So I'm just trying to to say I don't know the exact dynamic
- 5:13between Derek and Ollie, but I, I watch all the I watch all the
- 5:18post games and I, I try to consume as much content as
- 5:21possible. And David Solomon from 590, the
- 5:24fan gets a lot of audio and sends it and emails it to me.
- 5:26And I try to listen as much as that as possible.
- 5:30So, but then the thing that I think was, was really
- 5:35interesting was at the end. And so, so Derek's asking the
- 5:41questions. I don't remember exactly.
- 5:44Oh, I, I think what happened was, so Ollie says, I don't mean
- 5:47to push back. And I think that was about the
- 5:50middle of the order. So Ollie says something along
- 5:54the lines of, you know, I don't mean to push back, but you know,
- 5:57yesterday you're in the back row.
- 6:01We come back, we do some things. You don't ask any questions
- 6:05today. You know, we lose the game.
- 6:08And so the line that Ali says is now you're in the front row like
- 6:13a kid in the candy store, asking a bunch of questions.
- 6:17And Ali's, Ali's smiling as he says it.
- 6:20And so Derek replies, and you guys should really go watch the
- 6:24clip, Watch the clip. It's a good clip.
- 6:26But Derek replies, And that's because yesterday I wasn't
- 6:30writing. So I don't know if Derek was
- 6:31just in the post game. He wasn't writing, but he's
- 6:33sitting back there. He's just kind of watching
- 6:35because he's still the beat writer.
- 6:37But there, to me, it really shows the frustration from Ollie
- 6:41Marmol. Look, man, and by the way, I'm
- 6:44all for it because this team is boring and what happened last
- 6:48night was way more interesting than these games in my opinion.
- 6:51But I thought that was immature on Ollie's part.
- 6:55Whatever you think. Look, Derrick Gould is really
- 6:57good at his job. He's been doing it for a long
- 6:59time. He'll probably be in the
- 7:00freaking Baseball Hall of Fame down the road in the writers
- 7:04wing, whatever they call that. He, he is a professional.
- 7:09He is a professional. And look, I understand he's
- 7:11doing his job. He's asking questions.
- 7:13Ali Marmole is frustrated. He's not happy.
- 7:15Maybe he thinks Derek's going after him.
- 7:18I don't know. But the insinuation in that
- 7:21comment is, oh, Derek is happy. Basically, like the day before
- 7:25Cardinals win, Derek doesn't ask any questions.
- 7:28Oh, next day, Cardinals lose. Derek Gould is like a kid in the
- 7:32candy store who can't wait to dig in there.
- 7:36And he's so happy that the Cardinals lost and he can he can
- 7:38kind of get Ollie with his questions.
- 7:40I thought that was very, very immature to me.
- 7:43Like really, anybody watching this video, you guys like the
- 7:47Cardinals. You love the Cardinals.
- 7:48Derrick Gould has been around for a long time.
- 7:51I've been in Saint Louis since 2008, covering the team in some
- 7:55capacity. He's been here way before me.
- 7:57So you guys, you know of Derrick Gould, you've read him, you've
- 8:00heard him on the radio. He's on 590.
- 8:02Bernie Nicholas, I mean, you know, Derrick Gold.
- 8:05So I mean, does Derrick Gold seem like the type of guy who's
- 8:08excited he's happy the Cardinals lost, right?
- 8:11He's happy the Cardinals lost so he can get after Ollie and
- 8:15really kind of stick it to him. Come on.
- 8:17Don't you think that's BSI thought that was very immature
- 8:21on Ollie's part, but also it's super entertaining.
- 8:24So I'm not mad that he did it. But my thing with Ollie all
- 8:27along, and again, I just want to reiterate, it's more on Mozalak,
- 8:31it's more on DeWitt, it's more on the players.
- 8:32But Ollie and his coaching staff are also to blame, in my
- 8:35opinion, for a lot that's gone on the last year and a half.
- 8:39It's on everybody. You know, last year the baseball
- 8:41was bad. It was sloppy defense, base
- 8:43running. This year, I think it's hard to
- 8:46blame Ollie when the offense is so awful.
- 8:49Remember last year the pitching was awful.
- 8:51Again, that's not all on Ollie, but did it take too long for the
- 8:54coaching staff to help dig these players out of that offensive
- 8:57slump? I think that is that's fair.
- 9:00You know, is is this this is not a a veteran big league coaching
- 9:05staff. It's not the Dave Duncan of the
- 9:08past, You know, Mark McGuire when he was here back in the
- 9:12day. So I think it's fair to say, you
- 9:14know, how how good are these guys?
- 9:17And my thing with Ollie has always been too.
- 9:18I just with Ollie, I just always feel like he's been just a
- 9:22little too big for his britches. And you may take offends me
- 9:26saying that, but just I feel like he carries himself like a
- 9:29guy who has won two World Series.
- 9:31I like the confidence. I know he's young.
- 9:33I know he never played in the big leagues.
- 9:35I think some guys have a chip on their shoulder because of that.
- 9:37He's very confident. I like the way he explains
- 9:40things. I really do.
- 9:42But I just think sometimes you have to earn your keep.
- 9:45Even as a manager. That first year Cardinals were
- 9:48really good. You know, Albert was amazing.
- 9:50I do think he bungled game one and versus the Phillies.
- 9:53We can debate that if you'd like.
- 9:55Last year was terrible. This year is mediocre.
- 9:58And again, it's not all on Ally, but, but the manager has a very
- 10:02significant job. So tell me what you guys think.
- 10:05Do you think that's fair? And, and this, I feel like it
- 10:08always goes back to the Tyler O'Neill thing with me.
- 10:10But I just felt like when he publicly called out Tyler
- 10:13O'Neill last year, I just, I really did not think that was
- 10:17the way to handle that situation.
- 10:19I have not heard one professional athlete tell me
- 10:22over the last year or so that they agreed with, with how he
- 10:25handled that. And that's where I just think
- 10:27sometimes I, I think you got to earn your keep a little bit.
- 10:31I do. I like the confidence.
- 10:34Hey, you are a big league manager.
- 10:35You got to protect your players. You got to go out there, you got
- 10:38to defend your players with the UMS and all that.
- 10:41But I think sometimes you also have to earn your keep.
- 10:43And I think sometimes Ali carries himself like he's won
- 10:47multiple World Series and I don't know, I don't, I don't
- 10:50know how Tony Larussa acted before he won World Series.
- 10:52I only covered him and interacted with him after he'd
- 10:55won, what, 2 World Series? Then he won the third, obviously
- 10:59in 2011. So I don't know, that's just
- 11:02kind of my deal. I can't be too mad at it though,
- 11:05because I do like how Ali challenges reporters in the post
- 11:08games. I think it's very interesting.
- 11:11It makes for good television. So again, I can't, I can't
- 11:13really complain. I'm just trying to give you my
- 11:15thoughts. Those are my real thoughts.
- 11:17I'm kind of thinking through it as I go, but all right, let me
- 11:20know comment, like subscribe, give me your opinions on what
- 11:23happened. Is it a big deal?
- 11:25Is it not a big deal? Are you taking Ollie side, Derek
- 11:28side or you think it's a little bit of both and you think it's
- 11:31just a nothing much. I I do think the post game was
- 11:34very interesting though. So go back and watch the clip
- 11:36from Valley sports Midwest and have a great Sunday.
- 11:39Go Battlehawks. I might actually watch the
- 11:41Battlehawks game tonight. I don't really think I've
- 11:42watched hardly any of the Battlehawks this year, but if
- 11:46they win, I think I'm even going to go next week to the
- 11:49championship game if they win. So have a great Sunday.
- 11:51Everybody go Cardinals, go Battle Hawks.
- 11:54Peace out. Comment like subscribe.
