Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: All right. Hello and welcome to a very special episode
- 0:05Speaker 1: of Twin Cities Territory. Zach Pierce and Dan Hayes with
- 0:08Speaker 1: The Athletic. Tyler Duffy, the longtime major league pitcher in
- 0:10Speaker 1: the middle. Today is all about game seven of the
- 0:14Speaker 1: 1991 World Series. We're excited to look back on it. Please,
- 0:18Speaker 1: if you haven't joined our show yet as a subscriber,
- 0:21Speaker 1: excuse me, you can see there is a QR code
- 0:24Speaker 1: over on the other side of the screen. You can
- 0:26Speaker 1: scan it. We'll leave that up during the show. Definitely
- 0:29Speaker 1: would love to have you following along. Please, if you
- 0:31Speaker 1: like the show, tell your friends. The more, the merrier.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Happy to have them. Today is the 35th anniversary of
- 0:38Speaker 1: Game 6 of the 1991 World Series. Kirby Puckett's home run,
- 0:41Speaker 1: the catch. Amazing moment. Tomorrow is Game 7, which, for
- 0:45Speaker 1: my money, greatest baseball game ever. I might be a
- 0:48Speaker 1: little biased, but, you know... Nothing, nothing to me like
- 0:52Speaker 1: a zero, zero game seven, Tyler. I don't know. Do
- 0:55Speaker 1: you prefer runs in your game sevens or do you
- 0:57Speaker 1: like the tension of a zero?
- 0:58Speaker 2: I don't, at that point it's a pitcher's tool. Like
- 1:00Speaker 2: that's one, it depends what kind of fan you are.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Like I think there's the fans of pitching, there's fans
- 1:06Speaker 2: of just good baseball kind of like we're seeing this year,
- 1:08Speaker 2: you know, there there's everything in between, but I don't, it's,
- 1:12Speaker 2: it is, everyone knows what happens in this game and
- 1:14Speaker 2: it's just like, it's such an incredible thing in of
- 1:17Speaker 2: its own, but to be game seven on top of it,
- 1:19Speaker 2: like it's, you can't not enjoy this game. It's, it's
- 1:22Speaker 2: pretty sweet.
- 1:24Speaker 1: We are doing the show. Sorry, go ahead, Dan.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Even with the lack of action, like as far as
- 1:29Speaker 3: scoring runs, that game had so much stuff in it.
- 1:33Speaker 4: There were so many tense moments as it kept building.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And exactly.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And not scoring is just as exciting as scoring sometimes. Yeah.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Cause they almost score a lot.
- 1:44Speaker 4: And like, yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Um, like, Look, I will say I loved the 2016
- 1:52Speaker 3: Game 7 with Cubs and the Guardians. That was a
- 1:56Speaker 3: fun game, especially with the game tying to run homer
- 1:59Speaker 3: by Roger Davis and then.
- 2:01Speaker 4: A rain delay. There are lots. And rating what.
- 2:06Speaker 3: The best game is to me is really hard to do,
- 2:09Speaker 3: but I would certainly say this is easily a top.
- 2:12Speaker 3: It's a top 10, but when I say that, that's
- 2:15Speaker 3: not an insult to the game. there have been 126
- 2:18Speaker 3: years of baseball. This group of us, the recency bias,
- 2:24Speaker 3: it extends back to, yeah, we can say this.
- 2:27Speaker 4: We're probably good about 1986 and to the present.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I wasn't around for the walk-off, Bill Mazurewski's walk-off to
- 2:38Speaker 3: beat the Yankees in 60. There's so many moments that
- 2:42Speaker 3: weren't captured the same way, but Man, what an amazing game.
- 2:46Speaker 4: And Jack Morris, yeah, that was pretty incredible.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Nails. Not to mention all the pre-TV era games that
- 2:54Speaker 1: kind of don't even get consideration for that award because
- 2:57Speaker 1: it's hard to remember much about them. But we're doing
- 3:00Speaker 1: this today. Obviously, we mentioned the anniversary. It's also a
- 3:05Speaker 1: long off-season. So this one checks off the day as
- 3:09Speaker 1: we kind of wait for the player movement window to
- 3:11Speaker 1: open next week. Um, it's also a very meaningful game,
- 3:14Speaker 1: obviously to Minnesota sports fans, the twins are the only
- 3:18Speaker 1: men's major pro team to win any titles. If you're
- 3:21Speaker 1: in your forties or fifties, this was like your childhood
- 3:23Speaker 1: was this in 87. I personally, a little too young
- 3:26Speaker 1: to remember 87. So 91 became my, uh, my rallying
- 3:31Speaker 1: cry and the one that I've held onto, um, over
- 3:33Speaker 1: the years I bonded with my mother over baseball. She
- 3:36Speaker 1: loved baseball. She got me into it. I watched this
- 3:38Speaker 1: game with her. Uh, she's still with us, but no
- 3:40Speaker 1: longer able to talk twins with me, which, so there's
- 3:43Speaker 1: a little bit of nostalgia here as well. Don't need
- 3:46Speaker 1: to shed any tears. We'll move on. Uh, but here's
- 3:49Speaker 1: how it's going to work. We have, uh, we are
- 3:50Speaker 1: doing this live. If you are joining us live today, uh,
- 3:54Speaker 1: you'll be able to join the chat and follow along
- 3:56Speaker 1: with us. We also want this to work in perpetuity
- 3:59Speaker 1: after this. So you'll be able to do this later
- 4:01Speaker 1: whenever you, whenever you want to listen to it. Uh,
- 4:04Speaker 1: we have URLs in the description of this video on
- 4:07Speaker 1: YouTube or, uh, Later, if you're listening on Apple or Spotify,
- 4:10Speaker 1: they'll be there too. We're going to talk about the
- 4:13Speaker 1: whole game and we're going to watch four clips. We're
- 4:17Speaker 1: not going to show it on the screen here for
- 4:19Speaker 1: a number of reasons. It's not exactly kosher to do that,
- 4:22Speaker 1: but we have the clips picked out to the exact
- 4:25Speaker 1: spot where you can put them in a separate window,
- 4:27Speaker 1: a separate tab if you want to follow along. As
- 4:30Speaker 1: we mentioned last week, you might remember this game so
- 4:33Speaker 1: well that you don't really need to do that, but
- 4:34Speaker 1: if you want to, watch while we watch. You can
- 4:36Speaker 1: do that in a different window using those clips. If
- 4:40Speaker 1: you don't want to do that, that's fine. We're going
- 4:43Speaker 1: to talk about the clips as we watch them, so
- 4:45Speaker 1: you'll be able to kind of follow along with what
- 4:46Speaker 1: we're seeing and what's happening. We have four clips, top
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the fifth, top and bottom of the eighth inning,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and bottom of the And again, you can queue them
- 5:01Speaker 1: up now if you want with those links or wait
- 5:03Speaker 1: till we get there. I will give you a heads
- 5:05Speaker 1: up before we dive into each one. We're also going
- 5:08Speaker 1: to pull in a lot of great stuff from Dan's
- 5:12Speaker 1: 2018 world history of this game. If you missed that
- 5:15Speaker 1: on The Athletic eight years ago or just want to
- 5:16Speaker 1: read it again, it is also linked in the description.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Enough preamble. Let's get started. So I rewatched the entire
- 5:23Speaker 1: game for this occasion. And I got to say, guys,
- 5:26Speaker 1: it was good to spend some time in the old
- 5:27Speaker 1: yard again. I'm I missed the baggy. I missed the plexiglass.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I missed Bob Casey perched right there behind home plate,
- 5:35Speaker 1: best seat in the house. Tyler, you never played there, right?
- 5:39Speaker 1: Not even like college?
- 5:39Speaker 2: No, so it was still– obviously target field had been built.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I think they had done twins fest the year prior
- 5:47Speaker 2: to me getting drafted. So like 2011, maybe it was
- 5:50Speaker 2: like the last time they were there. Um, but yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 2: so I know I have no affiliation with it other
- 5:56Speaker 2: than these highlights, which I've seen, you know, my whole
- 5:59Speaker 2: baseball career at this point. Um, so yeah, it's even
- 6:02Speaker 2: just watching some of the stuff this morning. It is,
- 6:04Speaker 2: it's so wild. Just the, the dynamics, even like the
- 6:07Speaker 2: bullpens were, the fans were literally a foot away from
- 6:10Speaker 2: guys with no screens or nets. It was on top
- 6:14Speaker 2: of you. And like you said, the hockey-style plexiglass in
- 6:17Speaker 2: the outfield, it was a very unique stadium without a
- 6:21Speaker 2: doubt for the time.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Did you ever cover a game there, Dan? No.
- 6:26Speaker 4: In fact, maybe the Padres made an interleague trip. I
- 6:30Speaker 4: covered the Padres.
- 6:31Speaker 3: From 2007 to 2012, but we certainly didn't have budget
- 6:35Speaker 3: for that at that point.
- 6:37Speaker 4: So I never.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And, and I got to covering the white socks mid
- 6:43Speaker 3: 2012 season.
- 6:45Speaker 4: And by that point it was already target field.
- 6:46Speaker 3: So, you know, I, I, I unfortunately missed the, the
- 6:51Speaker 3: dome and it looked amazing just because you could hear
- 6:55Speaker 3: like one of the things you can always tell when
- 6:57Speaker 3: you're watching clips is just how electric that place was
- 7:01Speaker 3: when it was full. Yep. Like the, the sound just
- 7:05Speaker 3: goes to Epic levels of, I think of the Seattle
- 7:09Speaker 3: Seahawks and their home with the 12th man now. There
- 7:13Speaker 3: are certain places that just the volume is through the roof.
- 7:17Speaker 3: And you hear these amazing stories of how fans waited
- 7:20Speaker 3: after the team got back in the ALCS in 87
- 7:24Speaker 3: and met them after they won. And that there were
- 7:27Speaker 3: 50,000 people inside and just going nuts. You love hearing that.
- 7:33Speaker 3: And we saw a little bit of it with Target
- 7:35Speaker 3: Field in 2023. cause those crowds were electric, but I
- 7:38Speaker 3: mean just the acoustics of the dome and trapping it
- 7:41Speaker 3: all in and that many people, um, and such a funky,
- 7:47Speaker 3: like a funky, funky stadium. But I loved watching games there,
- 7:50Speaker 3: like games highlights as a kid too. And, and, uh,
- 7:54Speaker 3: you know, um, not Vikings, Niners, not those. I, I
- 7:58Speaker 3: did not, but, uh, but twins certainly very much. It was, um,
- 8:04Speaker 3: as a cool venue. Um, I mean, would I want
- 8:08Speaker 3: to be there? Or would I rather be outdoors at
- 8:11Speaker 3: Target Field? I'd rather be outdoors at Target Field. Target
- 8:13Speaker 3: Field's an amazing stadium. Target Field's like in my top
- 8:16Speaker 3: 10 easily in all the baseball stadiums. I could never
- 8:20Speaker 3: imagine the Metrodome being in my top 10. But I
- 8:22Speaker 3: can understand because I grew up going to Candlestick Park,
- 8:25Speaker 3: which was an absolute... just dive and it was our dive.
- 8:30Speaker 3: So I can, I can appreciate people who love the
- 8:33Speaker 3: Metrodome for being your, you know, your crappy venue that just,
- 8:37Speaker 3: you guys dominated and it's ours.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Yes, exactly.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Exactly. That's everybody has that. And, uh, so yeah, I can,
- 8:47Speaker 3: I can appreciate that very much. And, uh, it was
- 8:50Speaker 3: electric for, for game seven.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Um, as, as game seven began, obviously it had already
- 8:56Speaker 1: been a fantastic world series. There were four one run
- 9:01Speaker 1: games to that point, two of them in went to
- 9:03Speaker 1: extra innings. And of course, uh, another one was about
- 9:06Speaker 1: to do both of those things as well. Kirby had
- 9:09Speaker 1: just hit the walk off in game six. I remember, uh,
- 9:11Speaker 1: from all the highlight videos of that series that I've
- 9:15Speaker 1: watched over the years, I remember Chuck Noblak turning to
- 9:17Speaker 1: the camera after game six and going, it's over now
- 9:20Speaker 1: it's over. And, uh, A lot of the quotes from
- 9:23Speaker 1: your story, Dan, were players sort of expressing that same
- 9:28Speaker 1: sentiment of how confident they felt after that game. Momentum,
- 9:31Speaker 1: a powerful drug. And here's Jack Morris. Right when Kirby
- 9:36Speaker 1: hit the home run, I just had a feeling that
- 9:38Speaker 1: good things were going to happen for me and us.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Place was louder than any place I've ever played. When
- 9:42Speaker 1: I walked out to the bullpen, he's talking about before
- 9:45Speaker 1: game seven now, I got a standing ovation. That's the
- 9:47Speaker 1: only time that happened to me. And it was so loud.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I stopped for a minute to take it all in.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And then at the end there, he says, from that
- 9:53Speaker 1: point on, it was white noise, which I love. And
- 9:55Speaker 1: then Chili Davis, the Twins DH, talking about Morris, he
- 9:58Speaker 1: took every start the same way. He was a grumpy,
- 10:00Speaker 1: crouchy old man. You couldn't talk to him. He was
- 10:03Speaker 1: game-faced every start. We knew having him pitch game seven,
- 10:06Speaker 1: you're going to get everything Jack Morris had. And Tyler,
- 10:10Speaker 1: Morris had a lot of great years. He was never
- 10:13Speaker 1: one Cy Young, but he was in the mix a
- 10:14Speaker 1: few times. He obviously had that long wait to be
- 10:17Speaker 1: a Hall of Famer, but there's no stat to measure
- 10:20Speaker 1: being a baller, but you can just tell sometimes when
- 10:23Speaker 1: a guy has it, can't you?
- 10:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:25Speaker 2: And, and, uh, I think Trevor may as well, you know,
- 10:29Speaker 2: as baseball pitching was turning and how guys approach games
- 10:32Speaker 2: and things like that. And the, the last joke that
- 10:36Speaker 2: we would say about Jack was, I mean, cause even
- 10:38Speaker 2: today you meet it, you talk to him, he's, he's
- 10:40Speaker 2: got a little attitude to him. And, and, you know, I've,
- 10:42Speaker 2: I've said this a lot, like a lot of these
- 10:44Speaker 2: hall of famers, like they're, they're hall of famers cause
- 10:46Speaker 2: they had that chip always. But we joked that Jack
- 10:50Speaker 2: would wake up in the morning and punch himself in
- 10:52Speaker 2: the nuts to get himself started, you know, just to
- 10:54Speaker 2: prove how tough he was. And it's just like it
- 10:56Speaker 2: literally was like this guy is just he knew what
- 10:59Speaker 2: was going to happen. His teammates talked about it like
- 11:02Speaker 2: he was just going to beat you. And there's no
- 11:04Speaker 2: more clear evidence than this game. Like, it's just. you know, it'll,
- 11:09Speaker 2: it will literally never happen again. You know, frankly, it's just,
- 11:12Speaker 2: it's not going to, it wouldn't be allowed for, for
- 11:15Speaker 2: that matter. But, you know, to do what he did,
- 11:18Speaker 2: there's no one, you know, no, it's, it's, I don't,
- 11:22Speaker 2: has it ever been done other than him? I don't,
- 11:24Speaker 2: I don't think so. You know, I know there's been
- 11:27Speaker 2: perfect games and no hitters and whatnot, but it's, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 2: just this game, it's such in a nutshell, like his career. And,
- 11:33Speaker 2: you know, like you said, for him to get his,
- 11:35Speaker 2: his accolades and recognition, finally, like it's one, This game alone,
- 11:39Speaker 2: I think, would have gotten him in without the rest
- 11:42Speaker 2: of his career.
- 11:45Speaker 5: Okay, Kratzy, here we are again, man. How many times
- 11:47Speaker 5: do we have to tell people to get the best
- 11:49Speaker 5: tickets in the house? Where do we got to go?
- 11:51Speaker 5: We got to go to SeatGeek. It's been worth it
- 11:54Speaker 5: so many times, so many years. The green light will
- 11:57Speaker 5: let you know when it is time to go and
- 11:59Speaker 5: the best seats available. The red will let you know
- 12:01Speaker 5: if it's not the best. Kratzy, tell them how easy
- 12:04Speaker 5: it is.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Todd, I know it's easy.
- 12:06Speaker 6: But I'm looking for the deals because that's what I do.
- 12:09Speaker 6: Even so much, like we're getting such a good deal,
- 12:12Speaker 6: I want you to come across the river and we'll
- 12:14Speaker 6: go to a Sixers game together. I don't know where
- 12:17Speaker 6: to sit in the stadium, but it'll let me know
- 12:19Speaker 6: that it's a perfect view because I'm not a big
- 12:22Speaker 6: NBA fan, but I got to go see the Sixers
- 12:24Speaker 6: play with LeBron and the boys.
- 12:26Speaker 5: And of course I have a code for you all.
- 12:28Speaker 5: You can use code TERRITORY10 for 10% off your next
- 12:31Speaker 5: set of tickets at SeatGeek. That's 10% of all tickets
- 12:35Speaker 5: with promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the link
- 12:38Speaker 5: in the description to download the app and have the
- 12:40Speaker 5: code automatically added to your account so you can use
- 12:43Speaker 5: it later.
- 12:46Speaker 3: I mean, this was the reason why I wrote the story, Zach,
- 12:48Speaker 3: that you have the quotes from was, you know, Jack's
- 12:51Speaker 3: tenure with the Twins wasn't that long. And it was like,
- 12:55Speaker 3: you know, most of his magic was done with Detroit.
- 12:58Speaker 3: And it was like, well, I'm going to do it. Obviously,
- 13:01Speaker 3: I'm going to do something on him. going in the
- 13:03Speaker 3: hall of fame, but it was like, why not talk
- 13:06Speaker 3: to everybody involved in the greatest game in twins history.
- 13:09Speaker 3: And like we were saying earlier, probably at least the
- 13:12Speaker 3: top 10 in, in baseball history, um, where like, there's
- 13:17Speaker 3: so many cool things. And like, you think about all
- 13:20Speaker 3: the people that were in this game, all the great
- 13:23Speaker 3: players that were in this game. I mean, John Smoltz
- 13:26Speaker 3: is the opposition 24 year old John Smoltz throwing seven
- 13:31Speaker 3: and a third shutout innings in game seven, and establishing
- 13:34Speaker 3: he's on his way to Hall of Fame.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Bobby Cox, Hall of Fame manager. That's who caught my eye.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Leo Mazzoni, if there was a pitching coach that could
- 13:45Speaker 4: get in, Leo Mazzoni deserves it.
- 13:48Speaker 3: My favorite part, I get to talk to Leo Mazzoni,
- 13:51Speaker 3: and I'm talking to him about Giants and Braves, but
- 13:55Speaker 3: just to warm him up, I talk to him about
- 13:57Speaker 3: the 93 pennant race and be like, yeah, I was
- 14:02Speaker 3: a Giants fan. And he's like, man, you got me
- 14:05Speaker 3: rocking back and forth for talking all these good memories
- 14:07Speaker 3: right now. And it's like, I got to hear Leo
- 14:09Speaker 3: Mazzoni say that. Like, this game, I mean, Terry Pendleton
- 14:14Speaker 3: was MVP in 91, I believe. Like, there's so many
- 14:21Speaker 3: good Braves on Fred McGriff. We know that Fred McGriff
- 14:24Speaker 3: didn't get there until 93. Ron Gant, like, such, yeah.
- 14:31Speaker 3: And the Twins, you know. Those teams were pretty epic,
- 14:36Speaker 3: those 87 and 91 teams, and a lot of the
- 14:39Speaker 3: consistency in the players in them. I mean, Kirby Puckett
- 14:43Speaker 3: in the 91 World Series was unbelievable.
- 14:46Speaker 1: He was. He was pretty neutralized in this game. I
- 14:49Speaker 1: think he was intentionally walked a couple of times, but
- 14:53Speaker 1: there were also a lot of sign-of-the-times moments during the broadcast.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Like nowadays, Game 7 of the World Series, your national
- 15:01Speaker 1: anthem singer is probably going to be someone of some
- 15:04Speaker 1: national renown. I may not have heard of them. There's
- 15:06Speaker 1: a lot of followers. My daughter will have heard of
- 15:08Speaker 1: them or something. In 1991, it was Jacqueline Jaquez, seven
- 15:13Speaker 1: years old from New Hope, and she crushed it. She
- 15:16Speaker 1: did a great job. The players were smiling. The fans
- 15:18Speaker 1: were loving it. It was a long one, too. She
- 15:21Speaker 1: really took her time and got into it. Excellent way
- 15:25Speaker 1: to start Game 7 in 1991. They then showed a
- 15:27Speaker 1: montage of of all the previous games and things that
- 15:32Speaker 1: had happened. And we got a reminder of game four
- 15:37Speaker 1: when Lonnie Smith absolutely trucked Brian Harper at home plate
- 15:41Speaker 1: in Atlanta in a different era when you could do
- 15:44Speaker 1: such a thing in baseball. Harper held onto the ball,
- 15:48Speaker 1: by the way. Smith was out on that play. But
- 15:51Speaker 1: the reason that was so notable and the timing of
- 15:53Speaker 1: that clip was because that was right before first pitch.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And then as they went to first pitch, cameras caught
- 15:59Speaker 1: Lonnie Smith and Brian Harper shaking hands. That's not the
- 16:02Speaker 1: best image of it that's out there in existence, but
- 16:06Speaker 1: that's from the broadcast.
- 16:07Speaker 2: It's more than Cal Raleigh did.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Hey, Lonnie Smith, we're talking about great players.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Lonnie Smith, to have two significant plays on the bases
- 16:18Speaker 3: in that series, Lonnie Smith was an outstanding baserunner throughout
- 16:22Speaker 3: his career. This is a guy who is in the
- 16:26Speaker 3: hall of good. He's a stud player for a long time,
- 16:29Speaker 3: and he was such an excellent baserunner And to be
- 16:31Speaker 3: thrown out at home and then to get deked later,
- 16:36Speaker 3: that shows you how good the level of baseball was
- 16:40Speaker 3: in this series. Because we're talking about a guy that
- 16:43Speaker 3: starred for the Royals, Lonnie Smith, and played well, I believe,
- 16:48Speaker 3: in the 85 series. Just an absolute stud. And he
- 16:55Speaker 3: had two plays that I'm sure he would love back.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Even though Braves won four. and, and, and, uh, you know,
- 17:03Speaker 3: did their job at home. But, um, I mean, the
- 17:06Speaker 3: Deke is an all-time play too. Like that was game seven, correct?
- 17:11Speaker 1: It was.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Yes.
- 17:13Speaker 1: We'll watch that in just a minute.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Uh, no, you're good. Harper, uh, Lonnie Smith initiated the, the, uh, handshake. And, uh,
- 17:22Speaker 1: so this is Brian Harper talking about it from, from
- 17:25Speaker 1: Dan's story. I kind of looked at Lonnie and usually
- 17:27Speaker 1: when a hitter comes to the plate, I'll say, Hey,
- 17:28Speaker 1: good luck. just something kind of brief. I'm not a
- 17:31Speaker 1: big talker behind the plate. Lonnie looked at me and
- 17:33Speaker 1: I looked at him and we both kind of said,
- 17:34Speaker 1: good luck, may the best team win. This has been
- 17:36Speaker 1: a battle. It just kind of happened. It was natural.
- 17:39Speaker 1: And then good old Jack Morris, here's what he thought
- 17:42Speaker 1: of the handshake. It didn't sit with me well because
- 17:44Speaker 1: we didn't have a whole lot of that kind of
- 17:46Speaker 1: stuff that took place at the time. But when I
- 17:48Speaker 1: thought about it later, it was a sign of respect
- 17:50Speaker 1: for how good of a series it had been. And
- 17:52Speaker 1: that's just so fitting for Morris that in the moment,
- 17:55Speaker 1: he's like, what the F are you doing, Harper? This
- 17:58Speaker 1: is war.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I'm going to hit him in the neck now.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Maybe Cal Raleigh read that quote.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Maybe Cal Raleigh read my story in 2018 and decided
- 18:06Speaker 3: at the World Baseball Classic that his pitcher wouldn't like it,
- 18:09Speaker 3: so he.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Didn't shake his teammate's hand.
- 18:12Speaker 1: The game started top of the first was easy for Morris, 1-2-3.
- 18:15Speaker 1: There were actually 13 of the 20 half innings in
- 18:19Speaker 1: this game that were base runners, so the 1-2-3s were
- 18:22Speaker 1: pretty rare. And 10 of those 13 had a runner
- 18:24Speaker 1: in scoring position. And of course, none scored until the
- 18:28Speaker 1: very last half inning. Tim McCarver, I thought he was
- 18:34Speaker 1: great throughout this series for the most part, but he
- 18:37Speaker 1: noted during the top of the first that Jack Morris
- 18:39Speaker 1: had started game one of the regular season, the All-Star game,
- 18:43Speaker 1: game one of the ALCS, and game one of the
- 18:45Speaker 1: World Series, and won them all. And I was like, wow.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And I looked that up, and it's just not true.
- 18:50Speaker 1: He did start all four of those games, but the
- 18:54Speaker 1: Twins lost, and he lost in the opener. He actually
- 18:57Speaker 1: started 0-3 that year. He did start the All-Star game.
- 19:00Speaker 1: The American League did win, but he didn't get the win. And,
- 19:03Speaker 1: of course, he did win the ALCS and World Series
- 19:05Speaker 1: game ones. But anyway, not to dig on Tim McCarver.
- 19:12Speaker 1: The bottom of the first started with a pretty fascinating
- 19:15Speaker 1: graphic about this exact situation. Five times before, World Series
- 19:22Speaker 1: had gone to seven games with the home team winning eight.
- 19:26Speaker 1: all of the first six games, but the only time
- 19:28Speaker 1: the home team won game seven was four years earlier
- 19:31Speaker 1: when the Twins beat the Cardinals. Of course, it was
- 19:35Speaker 1: about to happen again for a second time, and then
- 19:37Speaker 1: it would happen again for a third time 10 years
- 19:39Speaker 1: later when the Diamondbacks pulled it off against the Yankees.
- 19:44Speaker 1: The rest of the first inning was pretty uneventful as well,
- 19:46Speaker 1: a 1-2-3 for Smoltz. And the second is when the
- 19:51Speaker 1: drama started. Braves got their first hit of the game
- 19:53Speaker 1: from David Justice. Brian Hunter came that close to giving
- 19:58Speaker 1: them an early lead. That was a looping shot down
- 20:00Speaker 1: the line that looked fair for a minute and then
- 20:02Speaker 1: hooked foul at the end. But obviously, Twins got through that.
- 20:06Speaker 1: My takeaway at this point of the broadcast, guys, was
- 20:09Speaker 1: thank God for the score bug. I'm just, I like
- 20:12Speaker 1: not having that on the screen at all times. I'm like,
- 20:17Speaker 1: I completely lost track of where we are, what inning
- 20:19Speaker 1: we're in. It's just, how did we ever watch sports
- 20:22Speaker 1: back in the day? Um, but the game continued on
- 20:26Speaker 1: pretty ho-hum in those early, in those early innings in
- 20:28Speaker 1: the top of the fourth. Um, this came up in your,
- 20:31Speaker 1: so there were a top of the fourth, there was
- 20:33Speaker 1: a two out double for Brian Hunter. Um, you mentioned
- 20:36Speaker 1: in your story that at some point, Um, at some point,
- 20:42Speaker 1: Brian Harper went out to the mound to visit with
- 20:44Speaker 1: Jack Morris and the broadcast did not catch that. It
- 20:47Speaker 1: must've happened during a replay or something. I'll, I'll trust
- 20:49Speaker 1: the players on it. But, um, Morris, uh, was starting
- 20:52Speaker 1: to get upset with umpire Don dinking your strike zone. Uh,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and Harper said, I didn't go out to the mound
- 20:57Speaker 1: very often with Jack cause he was not a guy
- 20:59Speaker 1: you really try to reason with. There were a couple
- 21:01Speaker 1: of times when he got upset. I just go out
- 21:03Speaker 1: to calm him down a little. You don't want him
- 21:04Speaker 1: to riled up cause he'll make a bad pitch. And
- 21:06Speaker 1: Morris said, I didn't let the negative feelings get to me.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I was only thinking positive. Brian was with me. I
- 21:10Speaker 1: knew he was on my side. Of course, Denkinger was
- 21:16Speaker 1: the first base umpire in, was it 85, Dan?
- 21:19Speaker 4: It was with the Royals and Cardinals.
- 21:23Speaker 1: One of the more infamous bad calls in baseball history. Tyler,
- 21:27Speaker 1: when there's an umpire calling balls and strikes that you
- 21:30Speaker 1: know has something like that on their record, does it
- 21:32Speaker 1: get in your head a little bit?
- 21:33Speaker 2: Yeah. It is one, like, funny enough, my last couple
- 21:37Speaker 2: years in Minnesota, like, I've stumbled upon the, like, umpire
- 21:41Speaker 2: scouting reports because they were, like, the hitters had them. And, like,
- 21:45Speaker 2: sometimes the catchers would use them and, like, they were
- 21:47Speaker 2: somewhat predictable, whatever. But it is one, like, I won't
- 21:51Speaker 2: name names because there's no point, but there's bad umpires
- 21:54Speaker 2: that are well-known around the league and some of them
- 21:56Speaker 2: have made their way out. But it's, like, you just
- 21:59Speaker 2: go into the game and you know, like, all right,
- 22:01Speaker 2: this freaking guy is behind the plate today, like, it's
- 22:03Speaker 2: going to be about him at some point or I'm
- 22:05Speaker 2: going to get hosed and there's nothing I can do
- 22:07Speaker 2: about it. And it's just, you know, even my last
- 22:10Speaker 2: couple of years up, you know, I was as a rookie,
- 22:14Speaker 2: I still had to earn my zone and things like that.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Like I experienced that, which is now never going to
- 22:18Speaker 2: happen again because of the way the game is, you know,
- 22:20Speaker 2: the ABS and whatnot. But yeah, there are, there are
- 22:23Speaker 2: definitely guys where you'd go in and you're like, so-and-so's
- 22:25Speaker 2: behind the plate tonight. And you're just like, Oh God,
- 22:27Speaker 2: here we go. And you know, whether it's Zook or
- 22:29Speaker 2: whoever was trying to explain to me the process, like it's,
- 22:33Speaker 2: it can at times be an issue. And, you know,
- 22:37Speaker 2: luckily guys like in this moment, you know, recognize Jack
- 22:39Speaker 2: was getting a little, a little flustered. So he got
- 22:41Speaker 2: out there and calm them down a bit, but yeah,
- 22:44Speaker 2: it can definitely make a play, especially in a game
- 22:47Speaker 2: like that, where, you know, it's, it's the ultimate final battle.
- 22:50Speaker 2: You know, there's no room for error and, you know,
- 22:53Speaker 2: you got a hothead already out there. You got to
- 22:54Speaker 2: keep them within the rails.
- 22:57Speaker 1: After that, Brian Hunter, double Jack Morris got out of
- 23:01Speaker 1: the inning. Of course, We all know that. But it
- 23:04Speaker 1: was a Greg Olson, Minnesota native, line drive to right
- 23:07Speaker 1: field that just hung up for Shane Mack. So many
- 23:11Speaker 1: hits in this game were just like a little bit
- 23:14Speaker 1: more left to right, a little bit shorter, and things
- 23:17Speaker 1: are going a lot different. But Morris gets out of
- 23:19Speaker 1: the inning. Bottom of the fourth comes around. And I
- 23:24Speaker 1: don't know if this ball hit Ken Herbeck, guys, but
- 23:26Speaker 1: he did a great job selling it. Yeah. He did
- 23:30Speaker 1: a great job.
- 23:30Speaker 4: So I feel like Ken Herbeck did a great job
- 23:33Speaker 4: selling a lot of stuff. I think he, I think he, he, uh, yeah. Uh,
- 23:41Speaker 4: I remember watching that play and not having a clue.
- 23:43Speaker 1: I mean, it, I agree.
- 23:46Speaker 3: And, and of course we're talking about 1991 camera technology, which.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Was still solid. It was still good.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Like, it's not like you're watching black and white, but
- 23:54Speaker 3: like the definition and being able to see stuff now.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Is so different. Like, And, yeah.
- 24:01Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know if they had instant replay
- 24:03Speaker 3: back then if it could have solved it.
- 24:06Speaker 2: I love the catcher's stance. There's a lot going on here. Like,
- 24:10Speaker 2: the umpire's wearing just, like, a collared, like, button-up shirt
- 24:14Speaker 2: back there. Catcher's on, just literally sitting on the ground,
- 24:18Speaker 2: catching the ball. It's just... That's what's fun to me.
- 24:21Speaker 2: It's like, this isn't that long ago in the baseball world, especially.
- 24:25Speaker 2: And it's like, it is a completely different game for
- 24:28Speaker 2: so many reasons.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Like, just.
- 24:30Speaker 2: everything going on. And I love what's the guy behind
- 24:33Speaker 2: the dish with the, he's got the sunglasses on. That's
- 24:36Speaker 2: who you're talking about earlier.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Casey, the PA guy. Yeah.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Just right behind shades on inside in the shade.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Yep.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Legends.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I love it.
- 24:46Speaker 4: Absolutely. Duff in a sec.
- 24:49Speaker 3: I want you to talk about the way guys hit
- 24:51Speaker 3: then the difference you see the way anti launch angle.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Uh, well maybe that's a good, good topic
- 25:03Speaker 1: for our first clip. So, um, we're going to watch
- 25:06Speaker 1: the first clip, the top of the fifth inning clip.
- 25:07Speaker 1: So if, uh, if you're watching now, copy that link
- 25:11Speaker 1: from the description, put it in a new tab or window. Don't, um,
- 25:15Speaker 1: just click on it. It'll take you away from the show.
- 25:17Speaker 1: God forbid you don't see our faces as well. Um, again,
- 25:21Speaker 1: there'll be a little ad at the beginning. You can
- 25:23Speaker 1: skip it after five seconds. You should be at about
- 25:25Speaker 1: one 1811 on the YouTube video clock with, Mark Lemke
- 25:29Speaker 1: on second base behind Jack Morris. So a little context here.
- 25:32Speaker 1: We're starting in the middle of the top of the fifth.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Mark Lemke has let off with a single. Raphael Belliard
- 25:39Speaker 1: bunted him over to second. And now Lonnie Smith is
- 25:42Speaker 1: up to bat. And I will press play in three, two, one, play.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Lemke leading off. It's an 0-1 count to Lonnie Smith.
- 25:53Speaker 1: And things are about to get hairy for Jack Morris.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Lonnie Smith, the surprise bunt. There was a lot of
- 25:58Speaker 1: bunting in this game, Tyler, a lot more than I'm
- 26:01Speaker 1: used to.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of balls on the ground. Like Dan
- 26:04Speaker 2: kind of hinted, there is zero launch angle from 98%
- 26:08Speaker 2: of these at-bats in all of these games. Other than
- 26:11Speaker 2: a few that caught it out in front, but otherwise
- 26:13Speaker 2: it's slamming into the turf.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Smith gets the bunt down. Mike Pagliarulo at third was
- 26:20Speaker 1: playing back, not expecting it. The throw to Herbeck pulled
- 26:23Speaker 1: him off the base. So Lonnie Smith safe at first.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Mark Lemke at third, and you've got runners at the
- 26:28Speaker 1: corners here with just the one out from Bellyard. So
- 26:34Speaker 1: this is the first runner at third base of the
- 26:37Speaker 1: game for Atlanta, and it might take a couple pitches
- 26:41Speaker 1: here for the next little bit of action, but we'll
- 26:44Speaker 1: hang in there and see it. Jack Morris nearly throws
- 26:49Speaker 1: a wild pitch as we see more replays. By the way,
- 26:53Speaker 1: I don't know if Herbeck was off the bag on that,
- 26:55Speaker 1: but again, the 35-year-old cameras and the lack of a challenge,
- 27:00Speaker 1: really a thorn in the side.
- 27:02Speaker 3: I mean, think about game one there, and I think
- 27:05Speaker 3: about game one of this most recent World Series there,
- 27:08Speaker 3: and ninth inning, the Phantom double play. And look how many–
- 27:14Speaker 3: it took five full minutes of– of replays in New
- 27:18Speaker 3: York to determine that Cooper Pratt had gotten pulled off
- 27:21Speaker 3: the bag and it was just so brief.
- 27:24Speaker 4: But I mean, that's with modern technology. So yeah, it's
- 27:29Speaker 4: not easy.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Now we're like, guys are getting trucked at home plate
- 27:32Speaker 2: and it's like, Oh yeah, we'll see you tomorrow.
- 27:34Speaker 1: No worries.
- 27:36Speaker 2: So we have a lot of these double plays too.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Gosh, we have a Terry Pendleton up at the plate.
- 27:43Speaker 1: As Dan mentioned, a great year. Pendleton and Gann in
- 27:47Speaker 1: the middle of that lineup was fearsome, but Jack Morris
- 27:50Speaker 1: equaled the task today. But I think it's an 0-1 count.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Is it coming on this pitch where Jack Morris spikes
- 27:57Speaker 1: one in the dirt?
- 27:58Speaker 2: No score bug.
- 27:59Speaker 1: No score bug. Oh, we got a call time. All right,
- 28:03Speaker 1: take a break. Morris at this point had thrown, I
- 28:11Speaker 1: want to say he was already at like 60 pitches.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Or Did they keep pitch count on the screen for
- 28:17Speaker 4: the World Series at that point?
- 28:18Speaker 1: No, no. He finished the fourth at 59 with already
- 28:22Speaker 1: three hits, three Ks though.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Did baseball even know to track pitch counts at that point?
- 28:30Speaker 1: By the way, there's a lot of comments on the
- 28:34Speaker 1: MLB video. They published this during COVID. This must have
- 28:41Speaker 1: been part of their COVID content strategy, put out our
- 28:43Speaker 1: classic games. And there's a lot of people who are
- 28:46Speaker 1: clearly seeing the Metrodome turf for the first time in
- 28:48Speaker 1: their lives. They're like, this is a real place? They
- 28:51Speaker 1: play baseball?
- 28:53Speaker 2: Again, that's like me. All these videos, I'm just like,
- 28:56Speaker 2: they really played a lot of baseball in this building.
- 29:00Speaker 2: You open the doors and the wind would gust through
- 29:02Speaker 2: all the tricks of the trade.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Special place.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Terry Pendleton, my bad. He pops out to shallow left.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Greg Gagne and Dan Gladden almost run into each other
- 29:12Speaker 1: making the catch.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Dazzle. Shortstop's calling you off, man. You've got to
- 29:18Speaker 2: get out of the way.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Isn't that the left fielder's ball, though? You're coming in.
- 29:22Speaker 2: It is, but he's literally waving. He's like, I got this.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Yeah, right. At some point, you have to realize he
- 29:30Speaker 1: can't see or hear you, probably.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Yeah, there's one clip. They had the kids with earplugs in,
- 29:37Speaker 2: and it's like, I can only imagine how loud this
- 29:40Speaker 2: place was.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Oh, Hey, Hey, Ron Gardenhier told me an amazing story.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Cause he's the third base coach for the 91 team.
- 29:47Speaker 3: And so when, when the 10th inning happens, he had
- 29:52Speaker 3: to walk over and fully yell into Gladden's ear.
- 29:57Speaker 4: He could not, Gladden could not hear him. And, you know,
- 30:01Speaker 4: as the ball goes back, he's yelling tag, tag, tag.
- 30:06Speaker 3: And I'm saying this now because I'm not going to
- 30:08Speaker 3: be around for this because I got to go. I
- 30:10Speaker 3: got to take off here in a minute or two. But,
- 30:12Speaker 3: I mean, they're five feet away from each other and
- 30:15Speaker 3: yelling tag, tag, tag. Nobody could hear it because the
- 30:18Speaker 3: whole stadium was like roaring because they knew it was
- 30:21Speaker 3: going to be a sack fly and they knew it
- 30:22Speaker 3: was going to win the game. It's almost like you
- 30:25Speaker 3: have to be a quarterback with a silent count. It's
- 30:28Speaker 3: all muscle memory. But like Gardenhier, like they couldn't talk
- 30:32Speaker 3: to each other without yelling from a foot away.
- 30:36Speaker 4: And that's how loud it was.
- 30:38Speaker 3: And, you know, I can't even imagine what it's like
- 30:41Speaker 3: trying to collect your thoughts in that kind of environment.
- 30:43Speaker 3: You know, let alone pitch and get out of spots
- 30:46Speaker 3: like Jack Morris did. Right, right.
- 30:49Speaker 1: He's got Ron Gant up now who did not have
- 30:53Speaker 1: a fun time in game seven. But I believe we
- 30:55Speaker 1: have a ball and a strike right now. A reminder,
- 30:59Speaker 1: Mark Lemke's on third base. Lonnie Smith on first. Two
- 31:01Speaker 1: outs now. Yes, one and one. And there it is.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Jack Morris spikes it in the dirt. It bounces off
- 31:08Speaker 1: of Harper. Back towards Morris. He throws to Pali Ruhl
- 31:11Speaker 1: at third. And again, I want a challenge because Mark
- 31:13Speaker 1: Lemke is called safe. Getting back to third. Very, very
- 31:18Speaker 1: close play. But, I mean, almost a wild pitch. You've
- 31:23Speaker 1: got the pitcher– making a play that they don't have
- 31:26Speaker 1: to make very often, springing off the mound and then
- 31:28Speaker 1: turning his body entirely to throw to third. A lot
- 31:30Speaker 1: of things could have gone wrong there.
- 31:33Speaker 2: When the catcher couldn't go get it because he had
- 31:35Speaker 2: to cover home. So it's literally like if Jack didn't
- 31:37Speaker 2: get it, the guy was just going to go.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Mark Lemke, one of the people Dan talked to for
- 31:43Speaker 1: that story, talked about that, said, I just barely got back.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Jack played that ball like a shortstop. He was like Smoltz.
- 31:49Speaker 1: They were great athletes. He bounced off, and boy, he
- 31:51Speaker 1: threw that ball off balance, and he threw a strike.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I remember Paliarulo almost had me blocked off third base.
- 31:56Speaker 1: I was able to get in somehow underneath his knee
- 31:58Speaker 1: and around it and get back there. That would have
- 32:00Speaker 1: been an embarrassing moment. Obviously, Lemke, nothing to be embarrassed
- 32:05Speaker 1: about overall in that series. He was lights out and
- 32:09Speaker 1: a real pain in the Twins' side. Extremely close play,
- 32:14Speaker 1: but the Twins are going to survive this, of course,
- 32:17Speaker 1: I think we're a couple of pitches away still, but
- 32:19Speaker 1: we're about to see one of the great celebrations in
- 32:23Speaker 1: the history of professional sports when Jack Morris strikes out
- 32:28Speaker 1: Ron Gant to end this top of the fifth inning.
- 32:32Speaker 1: If you don't remember, please go watch the clip just
- 32:35Speaker 1: for that, even if nothing else, even if you don't
- 32:37Speaker 1: listen to what we're saying. But he got Gant looking
- 32:41Speaker 1: and he unleashed this just unbelievable windmill of the fist
- 32:46Speaker 1: pump And then like sashayed off the mound with this
- 32:49Speaker 1: little sidestep and this sweet little kind of like elbows
- 32:52Speaker 1: back stare in at Gant.
- 32:55Speaker 2: It was perhaps– Jose Lima-esque.
- 32:59Speaker 1: It's a top five. Like it's just great. It's awkward
- 33:03Speaker 1: but beautiful and smooth and just deadly. I don't know.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I don't know how he pulled it off. It could
- 33:09Speaker 1: have looked really clumsy but somehow– Because it's Jack Morris.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Oh, and he came back from– And I would like
- 33:14Speaker 3: to know– I would love to know his– I hope
- 33:19Speaker 3: he never held it against batters for celebrating. Having seen
- 33:22Speaker 3: that clip, I hope that he was on his feet
- 33:26Speaker 3: when Junior Caminero hit that home run. in the ALCS,
- 33:30Speaker 3: I hope Jack was like jumping in the air and celebrating,
- 33:33Speaker 3: going like, you did that, you earned that.
- 33:35Speaker 4: Because it was such a– two things that stood out.
- 33:39Speaker 4: That's Jack.
- 33:40Speaker 3: To me, that's Jack signifying this is my game. Nobody's
- 33:44Speaker 3: messing with me. Like for you to do that kind
- 33:47Speaker 3: of thing right there like that in front of the world,
- 33:51Speaker 3: you were just.
- 33:51Speaker 4: Saying I'm not going to allow a run today.
- 33:54Speaker 2: He punched him out himself.
- 33:56Speaker 1: It's coming up right now. If you're in sync with us,
- 34:00Speaker 1: the 3-2 pitch to Gant. Denkinger takes a quick little
- 34:04Speaker 1: beat and then makes the third strike single. There it is. Well,
- 34:09Speaker 1: here's what Jack Morris had to say about that fist pump.
- 34:13Speaker 1: I didn't like to show a lot of emotion on
- 34:15Speaker 1: the mound. That wasn't me. I wasn't pumping my fist
- 34:17Speaker 1: for me. I was pumping it for Denkinger because he
- 34:20Speaker 1: called the pitch a strike. I was excited Denkinger finally
- 34:22Speaker 1: called a borderline pitch.
- 34:26Speaker 4: That's such a great quote. Thank you. It was, yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 1: So perfect. So perfect. So the twins. Hey guys, I apologize.
- 34:33Speaker 4: I got to bounce.
- 34:34Speaker 1: No problem.
- 34:34Speaker 4: I got to bounce.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Yep.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Thanks, Dan.
- 34:36Speaker 4: We'll see you guys on Thursday for the next show. Yep.
- 34:38Speaker 1: All right. Sounds good.
- 34:39Speaker 4: All right.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Tyler and I will keep it going from here. It
- 34:44Speaker 1: got pretty settled in after that for a few innings. Fifth, sixth,
- 34:48Speaker 1: and the seventh were all kind of rolling right along.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Not a lot of action happening. Both pitchers were rolling.
- 34:54Speaker 1: This is Randy Busch. talking here. I can clearly remember
- 34:57Speaker 1: Tom Kelly walking up and down the bench and screaming
- 35:00Speaker 1: and exhorting us, get the guy a run, just get
- 35:02Speaker 1: him a run. Come on, get him a run. And
- 35:04Speaker 1: then Mark Lemke talking about John Smoltz. John reminded me
- 35:06Speaker 1: of a young Jack Morris. They're going at it and
- 35:08Speaker 1: it was unbelievable. And I think that gets a little
- 35:10Speaker 1: bit lost maybe in the discussion of this game, Tyler,
- 35:14Speaker 1: is just how great Smoltz was to basically match Morris
- 35:17Speaker 1: stride for stride.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:19Speaker 2: I mean, and at that point, like he's relatively early,
- 35:23Speaker 2: you know, in his career Um, you know, it's just
- 35:26Speaker 2: crazy to think after this, then the, you know, the
- 35:30Speaker 2: brave stayed on their run for however long, but, you know,
- 35:33Speaker 2: just like we were kind of talking about earlier, just the,
- 35:34Speaker 2: the players ever in on these rosters and in these lineups, it's,
- 35:38Speaker 2: there's hall of famers all over the field. Um, you know,
- 35:41Speaker 2: whether it was within their own teams or in the
- 35:43Speaker 2: actual hall of fame. And it's, it's just so cool to,
- 35:46Speaker 2: to see the, the, the history behind, you know, the
- 35:50Speaker 2: legend that some of these guys are and, and, And
- 35:53Speaker 2: in my line, I've gotten to spend so much time
- 35:56Speaker 2: around these guys. The Twins were great about having a
- 35:59Speaker 2: lot of these guys around. I've spent many times on
- 36:02Speaker 2: a field with TK, whether it was doing PFPs or
- 36:05Speaker 2: him yelling at somebody else during a game, whatever. So
- 36:08Speaker 2: I've gotten my own experience with TK, let alone seeing
- 36:13Speaker 2: him in action doing these games. I still love the
- 36:16Speaker 2: old photos of him in the Zubas with the cigar
- 36:19Speaker 2: feeding the pitching machine. It's just stuff. and that's what
- 36:23Speaker 2: I think I love watching the old games. It's just,
- 36:26Speaker 2: it was just a different, it wasn't as polished guys are,
- 36:28Speaker 2: you know, it was a little more violent and, you know,
- 36:30Speaker 2: it was all the things, but it was just like
- 36:32Speaker 2: guys playing baseball. And then there was other things going
- 36:35Speaker 2: on versus it. You could tell there just was no
- 36:37Speaker 2: concern of anything else other than the game at hand. And,
- 36:39Speaker 2: you know, whether it's the showmanship, whatever it was just is,
- 36:43Speaker 2: it felt so much more raw and real, you know,
- 36:46Speaker 2: watching these games like that. It's, it's pretty cool to
- 36:48Speaker 2: see and just see how young, like, you know, you
- 36:51Speaker 2: see it, I grew up watching baseball, obviously you see
- 36:53Speaker 2: the old versions of these legends, you know, Williams coaching third.
- 36:57Speaker 2: And like, I knew him as a manager for so
- 36:59Speaker 2: many other teams. It's just like, it's a weird, uh,
- 37:03Speaker 2: it's cool. It's traveling back in time. It really is.
- 37:05Speaker 2: And I'm sure for someone like you, like this is someone,
- 37:08Speaker 2: a team you grew up watching and loving, like it's
- 37:10Speaker 2: gotta be that much more special.
- 37:12Speaker 1: For sure. Um, and now we get to the most
- 37:15Speaker 1: nerve wracking inning in the history of, uh, twins baseball. Uh, Again,
- 37:19Speaker 1: go to the description. We're going to watch the top
- 37:21Speaker 1: of the eighth clip right now. So you can load
- 37:23Speaker 1: that up in a new tab or window and I'll
- 37:25Speaker 1: set the context while you get past the ads and stuff.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Dan's story that we've been pulling the quotes from for
- 37:32Speaker 1: this article is obviously an oral history. So it's mostly
- 37:34Speaker 1: other people's words, but Dan had a great line in
- 37:38Speaker 1: his little bit setting up the eighth. And he said,
- 37:40Speaker 1: it might be the most famous scoreless inning in baseball history.
- 37:44Speaker 1: I would say it's probably on the short list for sure.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Top of the eighth started with Lonnie Smith with a
- 37:52Speaker 1: check swing single to right field, which surely pissed off
- 37:56Speaker 1: Jack Morris. Camera cuts to Steve Bedrosian, Mark Guthrie warming up.
- 38:02Speaker 1: You're starting to think this could be it. Then Terry Pendleton,
- 38:08Speaker 1: of course, the MVP, is coming up to bat with
- 38:10Speaker 1: two strikes on him. That's where we're going to pick
- 38:12Speaker 1: up the clip here. You should be at about 158, 20,
- 38:15Speaker 1: or 21. and Jack Morris is pitching to Terry Pendleton,
- 38:20Speaker 1: and we'll press play in three, two, one, and play.
- 38:25Speaker 1: And right away, Morris throws a pitch in the dirt.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Pendleton swings at it, and they repeal to Terry Tate
- 38:32Speaker 1: at third base. He says that he got a piece
- 38:34Speaker 1: of it, and when they show the slow motion replay,
- 38:38Speaker 1: it sure looks like he got just like, it looks
- 38:42Speaker 1: like the slightest little change in direction on the ball
- 38:46Speaker 1: after he swings.
- 38:47Speaker 2: That is a log of a bat, too, that he's
- 38:48Speaker 2: swinging right there.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Yes, it is.
- 38:51Speaker 2: It's as big as he is.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Morris, of course, was pissed. He said, I remember I
- 38:56Speaker 1: was so pissed because I threw a split-fingered fastball that
- 38:58Speaker 1: he missed by two feet, and Tate had called it
- 39:00Speaker 1: a foul ball. And then, sure enough, on the very
- 39:03Speaker 1: next pitch, what is probably the most consequential play of
- 39:07Speaker 1: this entire World Series, which is saying something, comes as
- 39:11Speaker 1: Terry Pendleton is going to smack a double Into left
- 39:14Speaker 1: center field and the famous deke at second base and shortstop,
- 39:18Speaker 1: which watch closely. I'm not sure that's the problem here,
- 39:22Speaker 1: but nevertheless, it's fun to talk about. So again, two
- 39:26Speaker 1: strikes on Pendleton. Morris is set and here comes the
- 39:29Speaker 1: double of the gap. Lonnie Smith like anybody should score
- 39:33Speaker 1: on this hit this is deep into the right one
- 39:36Speaker 1: hops the wall Gladden fields it off the fence but
- 39:38Speaker 1: Lonnie Smith is only at third base as the ball
- 39:40Speaker 1: gets back in the infield when they show the replay
- 39:44Speaker 1: he clearly took off with the pitch and And he
- 39:48Speaker 1: doesn't appear to peek back in to see if the
- 39:51Speaker 1: ball was hit. And so, and he admitted after the,
- 39:55Speaker 1: after the game and has admitted in a year since
- 39:57Speaker 1: that he was definitely fooled. But I feel like if
- 40:00Speaker 1: he had, if he had fallen for the deke at second,
- 40:02Speaker 1: wouldn't you be sliding there if you actually thought they
- 40:05Speaker 1: had the ball? Cause it's a force out. I think, yeah.
- 40:07Speaker 2: And like, you could see he like pulls up cause
- 40:09Speaker 2: he's like, whoa, what's happening. So maybe he's getting ready
- 40:11Speaker 2: to like lower the shoulder at that point. And it's
- 40:15Speaker 2: funny now, like seeing Chuck do that, like, that's what
- 40:18Speaker 2: we were taught at my high school. So I, we
- 40:20Speaker 2: went to the same high school here in Houston and
- 40:22Speaker 2: we taught the Deeks like at second base ball in
- 40:25Speaker 2: the air.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Dive or went to the same high school.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Okay.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Yeah. So we both graduated from the same high school.
- 40:29Speaker 2: And so, uh, obviously not the same year, but, uh, we, uh,
- 40:33Speaker 2: we still to that when I was there would teach
- 40:36Speaker 2: things like that. And it's so funny seeing him do it.
- 40:38Speaker 2: I'm like, that's yeah. Like that's all I ever learned, uh,
- 40:42Speaker 2: in high school. Did you know?
- 40:43Speaker 1: And it worked.
- 40:44Speaker 2: I mean, we got second and third instead of a
- 40:46Speaker 2: run score and it, It should have been automatic.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Brian Harper made a point that, again, you can't really
- 40:52Speaker 1: see on the broadcast, but Harper said of the deke,
- 40:55Speaker 1: the real deke was Dan Gladden acting like he was
- 40:57Speaker 1: going to catch it. And in Lonnie Smith's defense with
- 40:59Speaker 1: no outs, you don't even take a gamble of being
- 41:01Speaker 1: thrown out the plate. And it does look like Lonnie
- 41:07Speaker 1: Smith is looking out to left field, so maybe Gladden
- 41:09Speaker 1: did kind of fake, and maybe then he saw the
- 41:11Speaker 1: infielders and was like, what the hell is going on? Exactly.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Needless to say, history changes on that. Who knows what
- 41:20Speaker 1: happens if the Braves score there? Maybe the Twins find
- 41:23Speaker 1: an extra motivation to score before the 10th. Then Ron
- 41:26Speaker 1: Gant is up. There's still nobody out, by the way,
- 41:29Speaker 1: second and third. Ron Gant grounds out to Kent Herbeck,
- 41:33Speaker 1: exactly what you need. Then comes Tom Kelly's walkout to
- 41:39Speaker 1: the mound. There's just no.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Possible way in modern the modern day game tyler that
- 41:47Speaker 1: that starting pitcher is staying in at this no i
- 41:50Speaker 1: can see it for ron gannett because he had gannett's
- 41:51Speaker 1: number but after that it seems wild.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Yeah just it's never the no one people would be
- 41:59Speaker 2: throwing things into the dugout you know someone from behind
- 42:02Speaker 2: the scenes would be screaming up the tunnel like they're
- 42:05Speaker 2: just there's so many voices now involved and and majority
- 42:10Speaker 2: of these decisions i won't speak for everybody but like
- 42:12Speaker 2: at the end of the day, like the manager's got
- 42:14Speaker 2: some things in his hands, but something like this, I
- 42:17Speaker 2: have a feeling, you know, several members of the staff,
- 42:20Speaker 2: probably even the team, you know, maybe other players at
- 42:22Speaker 2: this point are, you know, guys are in the bullpen
- 42:24Speaker 2: waving like, Hey, I'm ready kind of thing. But it's just,
- 42:29Speaker 2: I think it's one, it's part of the stuff that's
- 42:31Speaker 2: been lost with the new great new game. You know,
- 42:34Speaker 2: things like this just aren't going to happen ever again.
- 42:36Speaker 2: You know, it's just so cool that, you know, When
- 42:39Speaker 2: I was coming up, it was always the, you know,
- 42:41Speaker 2: be the Verlander, you know, keep getting better as the
- 42:44Speaker 2: game goes on, things like that. And, you know, Jack Morris,
- 42:47Speaker 2: I mean, this is the definition of just grit and,
- 42:51Speaker 2: you know, wanting it more than everyone else in that moment. Like,
- 42:55Speaker 2: it's just, it's such a cool thing. And like, like
- 42:57Speaker 2: I said, I, you know, beat the horse, but it's
- 43:00Speaker 2: just like, it's just incredible. The game that he pitched
- 43:05Speaker 2: and worked around stuff. I mean, this is a nightmare
- 43:08Speaker 2: of an inning. you know, in a winner-take-all game. And,
- 43:11Speaker 2: you know, he made the play, had to make, you know,
- 43:13Speaker 2: on the ground ball, you know, the dekes. It's just
- 43:15Speaker 2: all the little things you work on at spring training
- 43:17Speaker 2: every year. You show up to camp and you just
- 43:20Speaker 2: keep doing them forever to the point where you're just, like,
- 43:23Speaker 2: sick of it. And, you know, right there he had
- 43:25Speaker 2: to make a quick turn, throw to third, you know,
- 43:27Speaker 2: making plays, you know, just stuff that you take for granted.
- 43:30Speaker 2: And then, you know, like Dan was saying, it's so
- 43:33Speaker 2: loud you can't hear anybody. I compared it. Yankee Stadium,
- 43:37Speaker 2: I compare it to being on an airplane. When you finally,
- 43:40Speaker 2: the plane engines turn off and you're like, oh, this
- 43:43Speaker 2: is quiet. I've just gotten used to being deaf for
- 43:46Speaker 2: the last three hours. So it's a crazy environment to
- 43:49Speaker 2: be in, that's for sure.
- 43:51Speaker 1: So Tom Kelly comes out to the mound and apparently
- 43:54Speaker 1: it was never about taking him out. They were just asking,
- 43:58Speaker 1: do you want to face David Justice or or Sid Bream.
- 44:02Speaker 1: And apparently according to Brian Harper, these stories are all
- 44:05Speaker 1: up here because they kind of differ from each other. But,
- 44:08Speaker 1: you know, Tom Kelly's like, I was just asking him
- 44:10Speaker 1: who he wants to face. And Harper recalls it as Jack,
- 44:12Speaker 1: like refusing to walk David justice. Cause he knows he
- 44:15Speaker 1: can get him out. And Tom Kelly just repeating, no,
- 44:17Speaker 1: we're going to walk justice. So whatever happened, um, The
- 44:22Speaker 1: walk to justice, which by the way, excruciating to sit
- 44:25Speaker 1: through an actual intentional walk. One of the best rules.
- 44:29Speaker 2: That's just one of those things now we take for granted.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Like there's guys who can't do that. Like, I mean,
- 44:34Speaker 2: we saw it again. I've seen it live in the
- 44:38Speaker 2: big leagues before they got rid of it. Guy tried
- 44:39Speaker 2: to walk in, you know, intentionally walk a guy and
- 44:42Speaker 2: sails the catcher, gives up a run and then we
- 44:45Speaker 2: lose the game.
- 44:45Speaker 1: You know, it's just, it's one of the, Those things, man.
- 44:49Speaker 1: It's got to be kind of a weird feeling. You're
- 44:50Speaker 1: kind of half throwing. You don't want to throw a
- 44:52Speaker 1: fastball in case you– yeah, yeah.
- 44:55Speaker 2: The amount of guys who can't do that would shock you.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:00Speaker 1: So that brings up Sid Bream, a lefty. Again, you're
- 45:02Speaker 1: leaving the righty in to face the lefty. It just
- 45:05Speaker 1: like does not compute in my brain at this stage
- 45:07Speaker 1: in the game. But when you have an iron horse
- 45:10Speaker 1: like Jack Morris, I believe– I think Jack Buck used
- 45:12Speaker 1: that exact term to describe him during the broadcast– A
- 45:16Speaker 1: little bit of a battle. Bream follows off a few pitches,
- 45:18Speaker 1: but he's about to hit a grounder to Herbeck. And
- 45:24Speaker 1: as a first baseman, the 3-6-3 is not easy.
- 45:30Speaker 2: No, there's a lot going on on this.
- 45:32Speaker 1: To make the throw and then hustle back to the
- 45:35Speaker 1: base and turn around and be ready to catch the
- 45:37Speaker 1: throw that you know is probably already in the air
- 45:39Speaker 1: because you just don't have time. Um, it's, it's a
- 45:42Speaker 1: lot and they pull it off perfectly. I think it's
- 45:44Speaker 1: right here on this pitch. Yep. Uh, grounded to her back.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Perfect throw over Harper talked about it too. He was nervous,
- 45:50Speaker 1: like not a throw you make very often as a catcher.
- 45:52Speaker 1: You got to step inside the line and make sure
- 45:55Speaker 1: you don't, um, you don't hit the guy, but they
- 45:59Speaker 1: get out of the inning. Unbelievably after second and third,
- 46:02Speaker 1: nobody out a couple of week grounders to her back
- 46:05Speaker 1: and intentional walk mixed in and, uh, they survive, uh,
- 46:09Speaker 1: and go to the bottom of the eighth. At that point,
- 46:11Speaker 1: Leo Mazzoni was losing it. This is, of course, the
- 46:15Speaker 1: Braves pitching coach. I have to wear hearing aids now,
- 46:17Speaker 1: and I blame the Metrodome. He says, that's the loudest
- 46:20Speaker 1: joint I've ever been in, and it's the most exciting
- 46:22Speaker 1: feel and greatest adrenaline rush you can possibly have. I
- 46:25Speaker 1: would much rather have a crowd like that than one
- 46:28Speaker 1: that's quiet. Good sport, Leo. Appreciate that. I keep hitting
- 46:32Speaker 1: the Dan Hayes camera, but he's no longer here. We'll
- 46:36Speaker 1: load up that bottom of the eighth clip. Next, because
- 46:40Speaker 1: the Twins, not to be outdone, are about to have
- 46:42Speaker 1: their own debacle of an inning when they should have
- 46:46Speaker 1: scored a run and didn't. The inning began with Randy
- 46:50Speaker 1: Bush pinch hitting. And on the first pitch, he laced
- 46:54Speaker 1: a single. And the crowd coming off the top of
- 46:58Speaker 1: the eighth is just lit at this point, buzzing. Al
- 47:02Speaker 1: Newman comes in to pinch run. Tom Kelly pulling out
- 47:05Speaker 1: all the stops to try to get this run however
- 47:06Speaker 1: he possibly can. There was a mound visit to talk
- 47:13Speaker 1: to John Smoltz at that point because he had obviously
- 47:18Speaker 1: in a similar jam that Morris had been in. Dan
- 47:21Speaker 1: Gladden comes up. He fails to get a bunt down
- 47:23Speaker 1: and then pops out. So there's one out. We have
- 47:27Speaker 1: Al Newman on first base. Chuck Knobloch is up. And
- 47:29Speaker 1: if you've queued up the clip, it should be about
- 47:32Speaker 1: 2.14.01 on the YouTube clock today. Again, if you're a
- 47:37Speaker 1: couple seconds off in either direction, that's not the end
- 47:39Speaker 1: of the world here. And this is John Smoltz pitching
- 47:45Speaker 1: to Chuck Knobloch with a 1-1 count. And we're pressing
- 47:49Speaker 1: play now. And Knobloch promptly singles to right field. Al
- 47:54Speaker 1: Newman goes to third. So first and third and one out.
- 47:58Speaker 1: And that is going to do it for John Smoltz
- 48:02Speaker 1: at this point. And He had a funny quote about
- 48:06Speaker 1: this moment, too, in Dan's story. The only trouble I
- 48:09Speaker 1: got in was the bottom of the eighth, and it
- 48:10Speaker 1: really wasn't much trouble. First and third won out. I
- 48:12Speaker 1: don't know, man. That's a good amount of trouble in
- 48:14Speaker 1: the bottom of the eighth of a tie game in
- 48:16Speaker 1: game seven. Kirby Puckett coming up. I had Puckett's number.
- 48:20Speaker 1: When I saw manager Bobby Cox come out, I can't
- 48:22Speaker 1: describe to you the feeling of this whole thing sinking
- 48:24Speaker 1: and going. There's no way I'm coming out. Nothing I
- 48:27Speaker 1: could do about it. Of course, we got onto the 10th.
- 48:28Speaker 1: I would have loved to have told Bobby Cox to
- 48:31Speaker 1: get off the mound. I wish I had enough years
- 48:33Speaker 1: to say no, but I knew on the other side
- 48:35Speaker 1: this veteran gamer was not giving in. He did it
- 48:37Speaker 1: all series talking about Morris, of course. And that's an
- 48:40Speaker 1: interesting note, I think, Tyler. Jack Morris stayed in the
- 48:44Speaker 1: game because he had the seniority to say, you can't
- 48:46Speaker 1: take me out of this game. And John Smoltz, who
- 48:49Speaker 1: certainly by the end of his career would absolutely have
- 48:51Speaker 1: that seniority, but at that point didn't. And that was
- 48:53Speaker 1: the difference, and he knew it.
- 48:55Speaker 2: And then the other part of that is he's like,
- 48:57Speaker 2: I knew I had Puck's number. Like, how many guys
- 49:00Speaker 2: do you think in that era were just like, yeah,
- 49:02Speaker 2: I wasn't worried about Puck it up.
- 49:03Speaker 1: With two guys on.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Like, that's how in control, and even watching him walk
- 49:07Speaker 2: off the mound here, you can tell he's just pissed.
- 49:09Speaker 2: But that is the earn and your keep, you know,
- 49:13Speaker 2: get the years under your belt part of the game that,
- 49:17Speaker 2: you know, probably we've gotten away from some because it is.
- 49:20Speaker 2: like sometimes your guy's just good and you got to
- 49:22Speaker 2: let him go. And, you know, in hindsight, they didn't
- 49:26Speaker 2: give a run till the 10th inning, so it didn't
- 49:27Speaker 2: really matter. But, yeah, I'm sure a few years fast forward,
- 49:32Speaker 2: Smoltz has, you know, given Bobby the wave off the
- 49:34Speaker 2: mound pretty quickly before he even gets out there.
- 49:37Speaker 5: Right, right.
- 49:37Speaker 2: He was enjoying being alive, so I think he knew
- 49:40Speaker 2: better to do that in that moment.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Maybe by 1995 when they won it, he had earned it.
- 49:47Speaker 1: I admittedly have not watched that World Series as many
- 49:49Speaker 1: times as this one. So the intentional walk to Kirby Puckett,
- 49:56Speaker 1: which makes sense. Actually, there was an interesting note from
- 49:59Speaker 1: McCarver about this point, which is like you already have
- 50:03Speaker 1: a runner at third. You've got the force-outs. set up, but, um,
- 50:09Speaker 1: he's setting up the force outs everywhere, of course, and
- 50:12Speaker 1: getting the better matchup Stanton against Herbeck who did not
- 50:14Speaker 1: hit Stanton well in his career, but, um, kind of
- 50:18Speaker 1: playing a little bit like the bottom of the ninth
- 50:19Speaker 1: instead of the bottom of the eighth, which in a
- 50:21Speaker 1: game where no one could score makes a little bit
- 50:23Speaker 1: of sense.
- 50:24Speaker 2: It seems.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:25Speaker 2: It's not like showed smolts right there. Just, you know,
- 50:28Speaker 2: the look at the feet on his face, it's like
- 50:30Speaker 2: load the bases here with a slugger coming up. You're like, man, what,
- 50:33Speaker 2: how many ways could this go wrong right here? It's just,
- 50:36Speaker 2: it's one of those spots and again like i said
- 50:39Speaker 2: that it's just a it's crazy watching all this stuff
- 50:43Speaker 2: unfold how differently it probably would happen today you know
- 50:47Speaker 2: they even like we said smoltz even being in the
- 50:49Speaker 2: game at that point it's just hilarious to think about
- 50:52Speaker 2: now and you know no obviously knowing the results changes
- 50:56Speaker 2: everything but yeah it's as a this is a, I've,
- 51:00Speaker 2: it would have been fun to be in this stadium.
- 51:01Speaker 2: That's for sure. It's just, it's constantly loud. Like it,
- 51:04Speaker 2: they didn't stop. It seems like the whole game, it
- 51:06Speaker 2: was just rocking.
- 51:07Speaker 4: Yep.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Um, so Herbeck is up, the bases are loaded. And
- 51:11Speaker 1: once again, twins just hit a ball in the air.
- 51:14Speaker 1: That's all they need. A fly ball to score a run.
- 51:17Speaker 1: I'll take a grand slam. That'd be great. Uh, but
- 51:21Speaker 1: he struggled against Stanton in his career. I don't have
- 51:23Speaker 1: the numbers pulled up, but, um, And what you're going
- 51:26Speaker 1: to see here is just another one of those unreal
- 51:28Speaker 1: moments where it just feels like it's not going to
- 51:30Speaker 1: be your day all of a sudden. He hits a
- 51:33Speaker 1: line drive right at Mark Lemke and it led him
- 51:40Speaker 1: towards second base and there was just no chance for Knobloch. Yeah,
- 51:45Speaker 1: Knobloch was on second base to get back to the bag.
- 51:47Speaker 1: So Lemke catches the ball, steps on the bag, and
- 51:50Speaker 1: it's a line drive double play to end the threat.
- 51:53Speaker 1: And so you end up with uh, second and third,
- 51:57Speaker 1: nobody out top of the inning, first and third one, well,
- 52:01Speaker 1: basically loaded and one out in the bottom of the
- 52:03Speaker 1: inning and no runs come in as a result. I
- 52:06Speaker 1: think it's about to happen right here. I've got a
- 52:08Speaker 1: two and one crown and there it is.
- 52:11Speaker 2: Couldn't have hit it any worse.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Yep. Knoblock, you know, speedy that he was, was obviously
- 52:17Speaker 1: off the bag leading off and it was just so bang, bang.
- 52:19Speaker 1: There was nothing, uh, that he could do about that.
- 52:22Speaker 1: So it goes to the ninth scoreless and, um, Jack
- 52:27Speaker 1: Morris has a 1-2-3 inning. Obviously, the 5th and the 8th,
- 52:33Speaker 1: we showed you, they were both very adventurous, but the 6th, 7th, 9th,
- 52:37Speaker 1: and 10th innings would all be 1-2-3 innings. After the
- 52:41Speaker 1: 9th inning, another fun story about whether it was time
- 52:44Speaker 1: to take Jack Morris out. Brian Harper says, at no
- 52:48Speaker 1: point until the 9th, and I think he means after
- 52:50Speaker 1: the top of the 9th, that Tom Kelly was going
- 52:53Speaker 1: to take out Jack. Jack got us out of the
- 52:55Speaker 1: ninth and Tom Kelly walked up to him and said,
- 52:57Speaker 1: great job. We're going to bring Aggie in to pitch
- 52:58Speaker 1: the 10th. And I'm sitting in my catcher's gear, watching
- 53:00Speaker 1: this and going, this is going to be really interesting
- 53:02Speaker 1: how it gets handled. Jack's like, I'm not coming out.
- 53:05Speaker 1: I'm not coming out. TK's going, Hey, 120 pitches, three
- 53:08Speaker 1: days rest. Jack, unbelievable job. We've got Aggie warmed up.
- 53:11Speaker 1: He's coming in. Jack sat there and said, I'm not
- 53:13Speaker 1: coming out of the game. I'm not coming out. He
- 53:15Speaker 1: said a few other words. Leo, Leo Mazzoni adds good
- 53:18Speaker 1: luck with that to the thought of taking, taking him
- 53:21Speaker 1: out of the game. And then, Uh, you have over here,
- 53:26Speaker 1: Randy Bush, literally an exasperation. Tom Kelly turned to pitching
- 53:29Speaker 1: coach Dick Such and said, tell him he's done Suchy.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Tell him he's done. Suchy with the great line said,
- 53:35Speaker 1: he's going pretty good, Skip. Tom Kelly says, that's true.
- 53:41Speaker 1: So that's how the top of the ninth unfolded. Bottom
- 53:44Speaker 1: of the ninth. I kind of forgot about this and
- 53:47Speaker 1: we're not going to watch the clip, but I kind
- 53:48Speaker 1: of forgot the bottom of the ninth was, uh, almost
- 53:51Speaker 1: as eventful as the eighth and 10th for the twins.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Chili Davis led off with a single. Jarvis Brown pinch
- 53:56Speaker 1: ran Brian Harper had a perfect bunt that got like
- 53:59Speaker 1: in between pitcher and first got to second Mike Stanton
- 54:02Speaker 1: actually hurt himself trying to field that bunt I think
- 54:05Speaker 1: I have a picture of the bunt yes that ball
- 54:09Speaker 1: shot the gap between pitcher and first rolled all the
- 54:11Speaker 1: way out to the baseline and Stanton got on his
- 54:15Speaker 1: horse to try to get it and ended up hurting
- 54:17Speaker 1: himself and had to come out but then Shane Mack
- 54:21Speaker 1: hit into a double play Lemke with an amazing turn
- 54:23Speaker 1: like turned his body Got it to Belliard who got
- 54:26Speaker 1: it back. Again, signs of a different era. Brian Harper
- 54:30Speaker 1: not exactly going for the bag here with this slide
- 54:34Speaker 1: to get Belliard.
- 54:35Speaker 2: And no one said a word either. Just tried to
- 54:38Speaker 2: kill the guy. It's like, ah, it's part of it.
- 54:42Speaker 1: And then Paul Sorrento who had come into pinch hit
- 54:45Speaker 1: strikes out. So another inning wasted despite the twins having
- 54:50Speaker 1: another threat. At this point, Tom Kelly is losing his mind.
- 54:53Speaker 1: He says, I was at my wit's end. I'm one
- 54:55Speaker 1: that if you tried to bunt, you tried this, you
- 54:57Speaker 1: tried that, you tried to hit and run, you do
- 54:58Speaker 1: different things to maybe try to generate a run. The
- 55:00Speaker 1: big problem was when Shane Mack came up with two
- 55:03Speaker 1: men on and I wanted him to bunt and it
- 55:04Speaker 1: was an awful attempt to bunt. It was not very good.
- 55:07Speaker 1: I said, all right, that's enough of that shit. Let's
- 55:09Speaker 1: try to hit and run. It just didn't work out.
- 55:12Speaker 1: And then Dan Gladden, who was on deck, when Paul
- 55:15Speaker 1: Sorrento struck out, said, I was in the on-deck circle
- 55:19Speaker 1: with the winning run on second base. I think it
- 55:21Speaker 1: was on third base, actually. But Peña got Sorrento on fastballs,
- 55:24Speaker 1: came after him with fastballs and struck him out. I
- 55:26Speaker 1: turned around and set my helmet, my bat right there,
- 55:29Speaker 1: knowing when I come running in after the top of
- 55:31Speaker 1: the 10th, it's going to be right there. And that
- 55:34Speaker 1: sets up the final clip of the day. That's bottom
- 55:37Speaker 1: of the 10th inning. As we mentioned, Jack Morris did,
- 55:41Speaker 1: of course, come out and pitch the top of the 10th.
- 55:44Speaker 1: It was one, two, three, again, just an astounding finish.
- 55:48Speaker 2: Right.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Um, the four of the last five innings were perfect.
- 55:52Speaker 1: The one that wasn't just an amazing job wriggling out
- 55:55Speaker 1: of that jam. So we go to the top, uh,
- 55:57Speaker 1: top of the 10th and cue up that clip now as,
- 56:01Speaker 1: as the, uh, sorry, the bottom of the 10th, as
- 56:03Speaker 1: the bottom of the 10th begins, Jack Buck is talking
- 56:06Speaker 1: about how a lot of times it takes, um, takes
- 56:10Speaker 1: some amount of time, to fully appreciate the magnitude of
- 56:14Speaker 1: a game. But he said, quote, tonight it's so apparent
- 56:17Speaker 1: that this is one of the most remarkable baseball games
- 56:20Speaker 1: ever played. With that, Dan Gladden comes to the plate.
- 56:24Speaker 1: You should be at 247.02 roughly if you're watching along
- 56:28Speaker 1: on another window. And we're going to press play in 3, 2, 1, play.
- 56:34Speaker 1: And Gladden is going to waste no time on the
- 56:38Speaker 1: very first pitch. He's going to chop his bat in half.
- 56:41Speaker 2: Just explode his bat.
- 56:43Speaker 1: Drop a little blooper in the left center and decision
- 56:47Speaker 1: right out of the box. Running his tail off, gets
- 56:50Speaker 1: to second base. Just, you know, obviously it worked out,
- 56:55Speaker 1: but he talked about how he knows the building. He
- 56:59Speaker 1: knows that ball's going to bounce. It's going to take
- 57:02Speaker 1: a high hop, and I'm going to have time if
- 57:03Speaker 1: I hustle. And he was right. By about a half
- 57:06Speaker 1: a second, he got in there. but good enough. And like,
- 57:11Speaker 1: you know, that decision probably wins the game, Tyler, like
- 57:14Speaker 1: just that one thing right there.
- 57:16Speaker 2: And that's the definition of a home field advantage. It's
- 57:19Speaker 2: something ironically, we're going to see Tampa play Milwaukee and their,
- 57:23Speaker 2: their dome tonight. It's, it is a true home field
- 57:27Speaker 2: advantage at times balls hit and they just do weird
- 57:30Speaker 2: things when it's not grass. And dazzle had spent plenty
- 57:34Speaker 2: of time out there in the outfield. And he knew,
- 57:36Speaker 2: like you said, That ball's got some loft to it.
- 57:38Speaker 2: It's going to bounce. And they showed the left fielder
- 57:41Speaker 2: whiffed it. It went up and over him. Had he
- 57:44Speaker 2: caught it, Dan's probably out. But because he didn't and
- 57:47Speaker 2: the center fielder had to field that, that changes the
- 57:50Speaker 2: play and allows him to get there. And that's just
- 57:52Speaker 2: one of those things. A matter of inches changes these
- 57:56Speaker 2: games so dramatically. And then to Dan's credit, as soon
- 58:01Speaker 2: as he hit it, he was not taking a single.
- 58:04Speaker 2: There was no doubt in his mind he was going
- 58:06Speaker 2: to be on second base. he was going to get
- 58:08Speaker 2: reamed by TK. Had he not gotten there, but, uh,
- 58:11Speaker 2: he knew he was going to get there.
- 58:14Speaker 1: Uh, so Chuck Knobloch next up. And with all the troubles,
- 58:17Speaker 1: the twins have had bunting in this game. Perfect guy
- 58:20Speaker 1: to have up in this situation.
- 58:21Speaker 3: Yep.
- 58:22Speaker 1: And like, maybe he's bunting anyway, if, if Gladden's on
- 58:25Speaker 1: first to get him to second.
- 58:26Speaker 4: Right.
- 58:27Speaker 1: Um, but it definitely changes the complexion of things.
- 58:30Speaker 2: Young, young Gardy right there. Svelte.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Svelte.
- 58:33Speaker 2: Yes.
- 58:33Speaker 4: Svelte Gardy.
- 58:34Speaker 1: Um, And I believe it happens on the next pitch
- 58:39Speaker 1: that Knobloch gets the bunt down and gets Gladden over
- 58:41Speaker 1: to third base. You can see the football lines on
- 58:43Speaker 1: the turf. I love this building.
- 58:45Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 58:46Speaker 3: I miss it.
- 58:46Speaker 1: I miss it.
- 58:47Speaker 2: I remember hearing all the guys talking about Torrey just
- 58:50Speaker 2: getting absolutely destroyed by that turf, too. It was just concrete.
- 58:54Speaker 2: It was rug burn on rock solid, all the things
- 58:58Speaker 2: you don't want to be diving or sliding on. Amazing,
- 59:02Speaker 2: the guys that survived that place.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Yeah. I had a try out there for some like
- 59:08Speaker 1: advanced league and my recruit you know my local osseo
- 59:12Speaker 1: maple grove athletic association and town ball i'm like 12
- 59:16Speaker 1: years old like i can take it but i'm still
- 59:18Speaker 1: you could tell it's not a comfortable place to play
- 59:20Speaker 1: not to mention oh yeah i.
- 59:22Speaker 2: Did the same i did a camp at in the
- 59:24Speaker 2: astrodome I did a baseball camp at the Astrodome and
- 59:26Speaker 2: I remember taking a knee and I was like this,
- 59:28Speaker 2: I don't want to do this. This is not fun.
- 59:31Speaker 1: I don't think this turf would pass today. Um, so
- 59:35Speaker 1: now black, it's perfectly executed.
- 59:37Speaker 2: Perfect.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Perfect. Right to the third baseman. Dan Gladden loves it.
- 59:41Speaker 1: He's pumped up. He's clapping. Um, so now you have
- 59:44Speaker 1: Kirby Puckett coming up. He's going to be intentionally walked
- 59:46Speaker 1: again as well as Kent Herbeck. So while we wait
- 59:50Speaker 1: for all that to unfold, um, Obviously, I'm sure at
- 59:54Speaker 1: this point, Tom Kelly is already informing Gene Larkin that
- 59:57Speaker 1: you are going to get off the bench after whatever,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: three and a half hours of sitting here and come
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: up in the biggest situation in your life. And Gene
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Larkin talked about that as well with Dan. He said,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: the moment hits you right there that you can help
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: your team win game seven in the world series. Or
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: if you don't get the job done, you're going to
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: feel bad. If your team doesn't win because of that,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: you're going to feel bad about that for the rest
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: of your life. Whether people believe it or not, that's
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: in your mind that if you had just driven in
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: that run, we would have won the game. And there's
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: a lot of people who are, uh, who are having
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: that same thought about this game, uh, who didn't quite
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: get the hit on both sides, but, uh, it, It
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: feels like a different kind of pressure when you are
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: put in there just for that one purpose. It's like
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: if you've been playing the whole game and you don't
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: get the hit in the big moment, at least you
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: can say, well, I caught that fly ball. I made
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: that other play. I got a hit earlier in the game.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: There's things you can fall back on. But when your
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: manager says– and I'm sure it's similar for relievers. When
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: they tell you, come in, get these guys out, and
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: you can't get it done, that's got to weigh on you.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it happened to me twice in Yankee Stadium. I
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: came in, I think it was both times, bases loaded,
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: no outs. And it was kind of just help us
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: get out of this situation. And it's a different kind
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: of pressure. It's a whole other world. And in the moment,
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: and the greats all talk about it the same, you
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: slow the game down. It's still baseball. It's still 60 feet,
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: six inches, so on and so forth. But it is
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: one that heightened adrenaline, like Jack talking about walking out
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: to the mound to warm up before the game. I
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: remember vividly walking across the field to go to the
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: bullpen in Yankee Stadium, and fans are just irate before
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: a pitch has even been thrown. And we're just getting
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: yelled at. They're throwing stuff, whatever. And it's impossible to
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: not get jacked for that moment. If you're looking for
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: that moment and have wanted it for so long, it's incredible.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: The adrenaline, the high of it, it's all great. but
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: the low after the bad part happens, it is, it's
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: a steep cliff you go off of there, but the
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: same time, it's just, you wouldn't rather be any other place.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: You know, it's what you play for. It's what every
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: moment you've worked in every off season leads to. And it's,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: you know, for, for this scenario, I mean, they're walking
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: two guys to get to you and you're going up there. Like,
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: I cannot imagine, you know, cold, like you said, cold
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: off the bench, you know, he's probably taking some cuts
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: underneath in the tunnel, but like, there is literally no
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: bigger bat of your life than this one that you're
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: about to have.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: And I love the honesty of like, you know, those
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: of us on the outside tend to look at you
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: all as like these, you know, impervious superheroes who just
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: like robots, nothing gets to you. And he like, he
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: doesn't look nervous walking to the plate and he is
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: coming up right now. And, uh, you know, like to,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: to hear that that was going through his head, but
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: he's still able to project this cool gum chewing confidence. Yeah.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Calmness can be this, it's pretty good. And like, by
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: this point, I remember sitting on the floor in my
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: mom's bedroom watching this, she was, uh, in there as well.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: And like, you're just, I remember feeling like it's gotta be,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: it's gotta be now. Right. Like it's just, because if,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: if they don't get it here, like think of all
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: the players that have been, have been taken out of
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: the game. Like the, the lineup is completely changed. You
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: still have Puckett and Herbeck in there, of course, but
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: uh you know right but.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: You've subbed you've used every option you have at this
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: point like yeah other than pitchers obviously but yeah otherwise
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: everyone is everyone's.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Out like it's i think the entire bottom of the
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: order have been changing like gladden's still in knoblock still
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: in but chili davis is out shane mack is out
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: gagney's out um and now uh yeah here's larkin taking
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: a minute coming to the plate and it doesn't take
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: long it's the first pitch The.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: Other one, imagine if they had the shot clock going
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: during all this, like this, the, the, just the buildup
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: of these moments, like it's something I wish there's a,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: there's a sweet spot somewhere, whatever the rules are, the rules,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: but like, there's something to this, these moments being allowed
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: to take more time and like the, the drama just
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: building versus it just being like rapid fire, just bang, bang, bang, bang. Like,
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: you know, it's, there's something to be said for that.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: These moments, like they were able to like, look at
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: each player and like they just cut to Jack Morris
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: on the bench. Like you don't get that anymore. Cause
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: it's all just so fast. And it's some, I just,
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: I just love, like you said, the drama, like this,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: this at bat is the biggest of his life. And
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: it's like, he just soaking it in.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Here's the pitch and the twins are going to win
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: the world series. The twins have won it. It's a one,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: nothing 10 inning victory. Uh, just, definition of doing your
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: job like just hit a fly ball deep enough and
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: uh man he was like 10 feet from a grand
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: slam there but dan.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: Gladden just a poke almost went out.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Yeah dan gladden did the right thing stayed on the
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: base until it landed just to be sure.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: He tagged up with his fist held high.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Yeah jack moore is famously like waving him down the
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: line come on just one of the one of the
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: great obviously great moments in Minnesota sports history, but literally
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: just a phenomenal game and everything about it, from Morris
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: going the distance to the scoreless nature of it, just
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: the way the series had been back and forth the
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: whole time. Unbelievable stuff. Plenty of good quotes about the
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: ending in Dan's story, which you definitely should read if
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: you haven't. Again, the link to that is in the
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: description too. But Brian Harper was on deck when Gene
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Larkin hit the winner He said, I don't know what
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: I was thinking, but when he hit that ball, I
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: threw my bat straight up in the air, about 100
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: feet in the air in my helmet. I look at
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: the video and go, how did somebody not get killed
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: by my bat? And you definitely can see that because
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: as soon as Larkin hits that ball, the camera cuts
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: to the wide shot from behind home plate and you
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: do see a bat flying. And then Larkin says, for me, again,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: some humility from Larkin here. For me, a below average
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: Major League Baseball player to be put in that situation
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: and put the ball in play, and help us win
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: that game in the series. You can't make stuff up
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: like that in athletics. And then Jack Morris, my son
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: was crying and I was worried if someone had knocked
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: him down during the celebration. I asked him why. And
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: he said, dad, that was so cool. It was so
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: amazing to share something so personal with him.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: You and I can relate to that as well.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: That's incredible.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Incredible game. Incredible moment. Again, 35th anniversary of that is tomorrow. Thanks, everybody,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: for watching, as always, on Twin Cities Territory. We're going
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: to be back with you with a more typical show
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: later this week on Thursday, but I just wanted to
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: do that today in honor of the anniversary and what
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: still stands as one of the great games in sports history. Really,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: I think I can say that without... being too much,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: too much bias. I mean, it depends how long the
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: list is, but it's on there.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: You throw a 10 inning shutout in a world series.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Like that's, that's put you in some ranks by itself.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Absolutely. Absolutely. Uh, one more shout out, please subscribe. Uh,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: however you watch or listen, YouTube, there's a QR code
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: over there. If you're listening to this after the fact
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: on Spotify, Apple, wherever, uh, would love to have you
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: follow following us along there too. Uh, by next week,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: we should have some player movement somewhere, maybe not the twins,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: but somewhere in the league to talk about, World Series
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: obviously going on, games three, four, and if necessary, five
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: will happen before we're with you again. So we'll have
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: stuff to talk about on the next show. Thanks for
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: indulging me and us on this special episode. That one's
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: for you, mom. We'll see you next time on Twin
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Cities Territory.
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: Bye-bye.
