Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Understanding Psychic and Soul In Their Deepest and Original Sense
Transcript
- 0:00The English language leaves a lot of room for confusion simply
- 0:05because terminology tends to be imprecise, inexact, or vague.
- 0:11The issue is made even more difficult because, particularly
- 0:15in the West, there is very little understanding of the vast
- 0:19field of consciousness, the various planes and parts of the
- 0:22being, and their interactions with one another.
- 0:27It is compounded by the use of language to join together vastly
- 0:31different things simply because they are not recognized in their
- 0:35true place or significance. The term psychic has been used
- 0:41to lump together all types of diverse phenomena.
- 0:45Originally the root came out of the Greek and eventually Latin
- 0:49term psyche, which translates in the original sense as soul or
- 0:54spirit or animating force. Over time, the term took on
- 1:00additional connotations, including mind and even ghost as
- 1:05representing the spirit of a deceased individual.
- 1:09The scriptural texts of the Bible reference the use of the
- 1:12term as soul or spirit. The loosening of the meaning
- 1:16seems to have started in the 1300s.
- 1:19In the early 1900s it formally took on the additional meaning
- 1:23in certain circles of mind. The study of psychology thus
- 1:29became the study of the mind rather than the deeper sense of
- 1:33the study of the soul. In the modern world we throw
- 1:38around the word psychic to cover a cult phenomena, fortune
- 1:42telling, and anything else which cannot be explained easily by
- 1:46our very much blinded view about the powers that operate in our
- 1:51lives. The understanding of soul has
- 1:55also changed from its original sense of the spirit that
- 1:58animates life, the spirit, to one that is conflated with our
- 2:04desires in the external being. Thus, we speak of soulful
- 2:09expressions, which generally represent the expression of deep
- 2:13desires or emotions, rather than being necessarily related to the
- 2:18deepest animating spirit behind the desires.
- 2:22We have soul mates, we eat soul food, and we listen to soul
- 2:26music. While there may have been a link
- 2:29to the deepest spiritual seekings in the origination of
- 2:32the use of these terms, they have acquired a much more
- 2:36general sense in today's environment.
- 2:40With this vast mass of confusion, it is easy for an
- 2:44individual who takes up the practice of yoga to be somewhat
- 2:48disoriented or misled. Srioro Bindo worked to codify
- 2:53the use of the terminology and went back to the original root
- 2:57meanings to help the spiritual seeker cut through all the
- 3:01levels of confused understanding brought in by this wide range of
- 3:06disparate phenomena lumped within the meaning of these
- 3:10terms, Sriorobindu observes. Quote I mean by the psychic the
- 3:16inmost soul being, and the soul nature.
- 3:19This is not the sense in which the word is used in ordinary
- 3:22parlance, or rather, if it is so used, it is with great vagueness
- 3:27and much misprision of the true nature of this soul, and it is
- 3:32given a wide extension of meaning which carries it far
- 3:35beyond that province. All phenomena of an abnormal or
- 3:40supernormal, psychological or an occult character are dub
- 3:45psychic. If a man has a double
- 3:47personality changing from one to another.
- 3:50If an apparition of a dying man, something of his mere vital
- 3:54sheath, or else a thought form of him, appears and talks
- 3:59through the room of his wondering friend.
- 4:02If a poltergeist kicks up an unseemly row in a house, all
- 4:07that is classed under psychic phenomena and regarded as a fit
- 4:12object for psychic research, though these things have nothing
- 4:16whatever to do with the psychic. Again, much in yoga itself is
- 4:21merely A cult, phenomena of the unseen, vital or mental or
- 4:26subtle. Physical planes, visions,
- 4:29symbols, all that mixed, often perturbed, often shadowy, often
- 4:35illusory range of experiences which belong to this intervening
- 4:40country between the soul and its superficial instruments, or
- 4:44rather to its outermost fringes. All the chaos of the
- 4:48intermediate zone is summed up as psychic and considered as an
- 4:54inferior and dubious province of spiritual discovery.
- 4:59Again, there is a constant confusion between the mentalized
- 5:03desire soul, which is a creation of the vital urge in man, of his
- 5:07life force seeking for its fulfilment, and the true soul,
- 5:11which is a spark of the divine fire, a portion of the divine.
- 5:17Because the soul, the psychic being, uses the mind and the
- 5:21vital as well as the body as instruments for growth and
- 5:24experience, it is itself looked at as if it were some amalgam or
- 5:31some substratum of mind and life.
- 5:35But in yoga, if we accept all those chaotic mass as soul stuff
- 5:41or soul movement, we shall enter into a confusion without an
- 5:45issue, all that belongs only to the coverings of the soul.
- 5:50The soul itself is an inner divinity greater than mind or
- 5:54life or body. It is something that, once it is
- 5:58released from obscuration by its instruments, at once creates a
- 6:03direct contact with the Divine and with the self and spirit.
