- 1:00The Arise Women of God Podcast hello and welcome to another episode of the Arise Women of God Podcast.
- 1:07I'm your host, Tamara K.
- 1:08Anderson, and joining me today is Amanda Powell, a member of our Women warriors of Light advisory board, an amazing expert on goal setting.
- 1:18And today we're looking at the DNA of progress.
- 1:22First, we're going to discuss why goal setting is a divine attribute inherited from our Heavenly Father.
- 1:29Second, we'll tackle the frustrating living in limbo, why holding still is sometimes the hardest thing for a growing soul to do.
- 1:39Third, we'll share the climb the mountain principle and why goals are the key to keeping life an adventure.
- 1:47And finally, Amanda is going to share a powerful story about how a Fortune 18 day migraine forced her to pivot from business goals to a year of yoga and health led growth.
- 2:01But first, let's kick it off by discussing the purpose of goals.
- 2:05You know, I, I, let's think about that for a minute.
- 2:08I would love to just go there.
- 2:09Could we live life without it?
- 2:12I don't think I could.
- 2:13I am too much of a doer.
- 2:15I have a little bit of ADHD in me and so the thought of sitting still and doing nothing would probably drive me absolutely batty.
- 2:23So I couldn't do it.
- 2:25I don't know if any of us could do it.
- 2:28Like, that's why I asked you that.
- 2:29Because even my young, young adult children, right, they have always had a goal.
- 2:34Mom, I'm gonna hit the ball over the fence.
- 2:36I'm gonna have my first home run hit, right?
- 2:39Oh, I'm gonna run and I'm gonna run so fast.
- 2:41I'm gonna run this mile in four minutes, right?
- 2:44Like so at the age of little, like even my grandson, I'm looking at my grandson who's five and even he has goals.
- 2:53I'm going to come in first place when I play this game with my dad, right?
- 2:58So I'm kind of looking at that and I think, and I'm wondering, this is my thought.
- 3:02Is it because it's divinely inherent in us?
- 3:06I mean, even our Father has a goal, right?
- 3:08To bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
- 3:11Maybe it's something that is within us and you remove the goal, right?
- 3:17You remove us from being goal seekers and goal doers and goal achievers to not having goals.
- 3:23Then what are we doing?
- 3:25So I almost feel like there is a purpose to having goals.
- 3:28It's something inside of us that makes us want to become something better.
- 3:34You don't become without a goal.
- 3:36We are built to become.
- 3:38And that becoming process is the entire point of our existence.
- 3:43But when that process hits the pause button, when we are stuck in what I call the limbo phase, it feels like we're failing at life.
- 3:51And that just sucks.
- 3:53In reality, that frustration is just proof that your spirit is hungry for growth.
- 3:59And I.
- 4:00I look back on the times in my life when it's like we're on pause and we're in limbo and we're waiting for something to happen so that we can take that next step.
- 4:10And I will say those are some of the most frustrating points in my life.
- 4:14I look back and I just.
- 4:15I'm like, come on, hurry up already.
- 4:20It's like holding still, even metaphysically, is so hard.
- 4:27It's so hard.
- 4:29So I think the purpose of setting goals is growth.
- 4:33Our growth, whether it's spiritually, physically, emotionally, whether it's financially.
- 4:39I mean, there are so many different areas in which you can set goals.
- 4:42So the purpose of goals is growth.
- 4:45It's experience, it's knowledge.
- 4:47It's becoming better than we are right at this point in our lives, right?
- 4:55Yeah.
- 4:55I really love that the purpose is.
- 4:57Is the growth.
- 4:58And I love that it's the becoming.
- 5:01And that's probably why we don't like the waiting place, right?
- 5:05We don't love those places of weight because we feel there's no growth.
- 5:10We feel like.
- 5:12And.
- 5:12And it doesn't.
- 5:14That just excite you?
- 5:14Like, that just makes me so excited to think that within us, we want to grow.
- 5:20We want to be stretched.
- 5:23Maybe.
- 5:23Maybe just a little, right?
- 5:25Maybe not too much.
- 5:25That's me.
- 5:26Anyway.
- 5:26Okay.
- 5:26Heavenly Father, I'm ready for a little stretch.
- 5:28And then he goes.
- 5:29And I'm like, too much.
- 5:30Slow down.
- 5:31Right?
- 5:32But I think that's that just excites me to think that there's something driving us forward, and that would be those goals.
- 5:41They drive us forward.
- 5:42They move us forward.
- 5:43They.
- 5:44Yeah, that's exciting.
- 5:46It's all about the adventure, my friends.
- 5:48I remember being a little girl and looking at a mountain and wanting to climb it simply because it was there.
- 5:55Goals add that sense, sense of learning and adventure to our lives.
- 5:59But what happens when the excitement dies?
- 6:03What if you're pushing for a goal that just isn't clicking anymore?
- 6:08That's when you have to ask God if you're actually aligned with him and his will.
- 6:14Sometimes the purpose of setting a goal is to lead you to the real goal God has for you.
- 6:19Amanda is now going to share a story about how she had a business plan.
- 6:24Plan all ready to go.
- 6:25But God used a physical trial to help show her she needed a different kind of growth first to begin with, or maybe if you've lost the excitement, there's a question that you could ask.
- 6:38Is this goal the right goal for me?
- 6:41Right.
- 6:41Like, maybe my goal is not aligned.
- 6:43Maybe I have a goal that is just.
- 6:46I.
- 6:46I set this goal because this is what everybody else is doing or this is what I think that I need.
- 6:50Okay?
- 6:50So, for example, a couple of years ago, I had a goal and I quit my job with the districts.
- 6:58I was going to go out on my own.
- 6:59I was going to do my business, and I was super, super excited about it, you guys, like, so excited about it.
- 7:05So I do that, and I wind up with migraine headaches for 14 days straight.
- 7:12And through all of that, I found a lot of things going on in the back of my neck.
- 7:17And.
- 7:17And it put a hold on it, right?
- 7:20And so I kind of had to stop.
- 7:21And I was like, hey, now I'm getting frustrated because I'm not reaching this goal, but I can't reach this goal.
- 7:25So I had to ask that question, is this the right goal at this time?
- 7:30And the answer was no.
- 7:31The goal for me was to learn about health.
- 7:34I needed to make some changes.
- 7:36I needed to learn about yoga.
- 7:38I needed to learn about things that would help relieve the pain in my neck, you know?
- 7:44And it was a year of such growth for me.
- 7:48But it was.
- 7:49It was also a year of a little bit of frustration, too, because it was changing things that were just so autopilot for me, right?
- 7:57Complete autopilot.
- 7:58And now I had to change some things, like yoga.
- 8:01You guys, really, I am like weights and let's get out and walk.
- 8:05And now I'm Doing yoga, and I didn't even know my body could move like that.
- 8:09Like, holy cow.
- 8:10Or hurt like that.
- 8:11Like, never in my life have I experienced so much physical pain than my time in yoga, right?
- 8:18But oh, my gosh, it's something now that I love to have in my life.
- 8:23Like, I am just, like, I get up and I'm like, oh, I'm stiff.
- 8:26I gotta move my body, right?
- 8:27And had I not checked in with myself and said, and my heavenly Father, is this the right goal?
- 8:34It wasn't the right goal.
- 8:35I had to put that on pause, and I had to shift to my health, figure out this, and then, guess what?
- 8:42A year later, it was time.
- 8:44For this goal, Amanda had to pause her business and prioritize her body and her health.
- 8:49Flexibility is not failure.
- 8:52It's being spirit led.
- 8:54When you check in with God, he'll tell you if it's time to push or to pivot.
- 8:58As we close today, remember that a goal that moves you forward is never a wasted effort, even if the destination changes.
- 9:08The purpose of goals isn't to reach a state of perfection.
- 9:12It's to stay in a state of progression.
- 9:15Whether you're climbing a mountain or learning to breathe through a yoga pose, you are honoring the divine instinct God has placed inside of you.
