- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Scheger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, This is
- 0:23Speaker 1: Peter Schreger. This is the Season with Peter Schreger. And
- 0:26Speaker 1: as you know, our best shows are in the off
- 0:29Speaker 1: season when we are reacting to free agency and draft news.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Last week we had Mike Garatfolo on to set the table.
- 0:36Speaker 1: And now as I am recording this, it is three
- 0:39Speaker 1: hours into free agency.
- 0:41Speaker 2: So we started at twelve.
- 0:42Speaker 1: We're recording this at three pm Eastern, and we'll call
- 0:46Speaker 1: this an emergency pod, which.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Is something that Bill Simmons I think coined.
- 0:49Speaker 1: But it's our instant reaction to the first wave of
- 0:53Speaker 1: free agent moves.
- 0:54Speaker 2: And I will tell.
- 0:55Speaker 1: You the big one to me is what went down
- 0:59Speaker 1: just now with the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Jets.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And we have dominant that are still about to follow.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We'll be on Twitter throughout this show, so we're gonna
- 1:11Speaker 1: do good thirty forty minutes right now, and if we
- 1:14Speaker 1: get more quarterback news, we will report it. But I
- 1:16Speaker 1: said it throughout Good Morning Football this morning, and I
- 1:19Speaker 1: said it throughout the week. The first domino to fall
- 1:23Speaker 1: will be Stafford. The second domino to fall will be
- 1:26Speaker 1: Sam Donald. The third will be Justin Fields. And then
- 1:30Speaker 1: there is this see of names, and it includes Daniel Jones,
- 1:34Speaker 1: it includes Aaron Rodgers, it includes Russell Wilson, It quickly
- 1:38Speaker 1: includes a Carson Wentz, It quickly includes a mac Jones.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And there are seats to be filled. So my instant
- 1:47Speaker 1: reactions Sam Donald. All along the thought was he would
- 1:51Speaker 1: come back on a short term deal, two years, maybe
- 1:55Speaker 1: forty million, to go back to the Minnesota Vikings. But
- 1:59Speaker 1: when the Seattle Seahawks traded Gino Smith to Vegas, there
- 2:03Speaker 1: was a giant void at quarterback for them. They go
- 2:05Speaker 1: and they get Sam Donald. I like this deal. I
- 2:09Speaker 1: think the money's right. Three years, one hundred million, so
- 2:13Speaker 1: you're saying about thirty three million dollars a year, which
- 2:16Speaker 1: puts him in that middle tier of quarterbacks. He also
- 2:19Speaker 1: gets fifty five million dollars guaranteed. Finally, at this stage
- 2:23Speaker 1: in his career, Sam Donald gets the love and appreciation.
- 2:26Speaker 1: He's still wanted. He's the official quarterback one. There is
- 2:29Speaker 1: no debate there in Seattle. I don't know if Sam
- 2:32Speaker 1: Donald's great. I still don't seventeen weeks of amazing football.
- 2:36Speaker 1: But I will tell you this his best game. And
- 2:39Speaker 1: it could be debatable whether it was some of the
- 2:42Speaker 1: big yards he put up, or the comeback he had
- 2:44Speaker 1: against the Bears, or the overtime he had in Chicago
- 2:46Speaker 1: where he came all the way.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Back last year.
- 2:47Speaker 1: But I think his best game, his clutches game, his
- 2:49Speaker 1: gutsy his performance was Week sixteen in Seattle.
- 2:52Speaker 2: They're down twenty four to twenty.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Late, he leads them back, throws the touchdown to Justin
- 2:57Speaker 1: Jefferson in the end zone. Donald that day completed twenty
- 3:02Speaker 1: six passes for you know, I think it was like
- 3:04Speaker 1: twenty six to thirty one.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Did it in seat in the elements, with all.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Of the pressure in the world on him, and did
- 3:12Speaker 1: that while throwing three touchdowns no interceptions, having a fourth
- 3:16Speaker 1: quarter comeback on Mike McDonald's defense. Now, I don't know
- 3:19Speaker 1: if McDonald and John Schneider, we'll get the full story
- 3:22Speaker 1: in the coming day.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I don't know if they saw this three steps ahead.
- 3:24Speaker 1: But when their negotiations with Gino went off the rails
- 3:27Speaker 1: a little bit and Gino was talking million forty five
- 3:30Speaker 1: million at thirty five years old, it quickly made them
- 3:33Speaker 1: pivot and said, well, what other options are there? Donald
- 3:36Speaker 1: now goes up to Seattle, where he'll play at an
- 3:39Speaker 1: outdoor stadium in the weather, in the elements.
- 3:42Speaker 2: We'll see how that goes. Remember he's a West Coast kid.
- 3:45Speaker 1: His career in New York was not not anything to
- 3:48Speaker 1: write home about. He then bounced around from Carolina to
- 3:51Speaker 1: San Francisco to this dream season in Minnesota, which was mostly.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Done in that dome inside.
- 3:59Speaker 1: So we'll see how he reacts and how he responds.
- 4:01Speaker 1: So what are the trickle down effects of that? Well,
- 4:04Speaker 1: the Jets quickly, quickly, right after we got our news
- 4:08Speaker 1: out of Seattle, the Jets finally, you know, it's like
- 4:12Speaker 1: smoke coming from the Vatican because we haven't heard a
- 4:14Speaker 1: word from them since Darren Mugi and Aaron Glen took over.
- 4:17Speaker 1: As far as you know, what they wanted to do,
- 4:19Speaker 1: their intentions, there have been no leaks in that building.
- 4:22Speaker 1: They go and they signed Justin Fields for two years
- 4:24Speaker 1: forty million. So that's twenty million a year for Justin Fields,
- 4:28Speaker 1: it's thirty three million dollars a year for Sam Darnald.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Who would you rather have that situation?
- 4:34Speaker 1: I think you'd say Donald based on the track record
- 4:36Speaker 1: and the numbers that he put up last year, but
- 4:38Speaker 1: Fields provides a running element. Fields, of Course was college
- 4:42Speaker 1: quarterback to Garrett Wilson. Fields of Course has this upside
- 4:48Speaker 1: where you feel like the scratch of the surface just
- 4:50Speaker 1: has begun. So those are the first two dominoes to
- 4:54Speaker 1: drop at quarterback. I am going to bring on a
- 4:57Speaker 1: guest in a little bit, and we had him on
- 4:59Speaker 1: when the Jets were doing their their coach and GM search.
- 5:02Speaker 2: His name is Danny, and I call him Danny from
- 5:04Speaker 2: lot E.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Because that's where he tailgates with the kebab guy for
- 5:08Speaker 1: those Jets games. He gave up his Jets season tickets
- 5:10Speaker 1: after last year, in a fit of rage, gave him up,
- 5:13Speaker 1: So I'm not paying money to go see this team anymore.
- 5:16Speaker 1: They have since hired a new head coach, a new GM,
- 5:21Speaker 1: a new offensive coordinator, a new defensive coordinator, have an
- 5:24Speaker 1: entirely new front office, and I'm curious to check in
- 5:27Speaker 1: with Danny on Howie feels about his new quarterback one
- 5:30Speaker 1: being justin Fields. But before we get there, what other
- 5:33Speaker 1: spots are still vacant? As we record this, the Giants
- 5:36Speaker 1: still do not have a quarterback. My insight tells me
- 5:41Speaker 1: that the plan was to go big on Rogers, all right,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and hopefully that's.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Still the plan, and my information wasn't wrong.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Go big on Rogers, whatever that means, but show Rogers
- 5:53Speaker 1: their intention on bringing him in, and if Rogers doesn't,
- 5:56Speaker 1: then we pivot. But even if there's Rogers, the thought
- 5:59Speaker 1: is you sign Rogers to a deal, or if it's
- 6:03Speaker 1: Carson Wentz or Russell Wilson, and then you also address
- 6:05Speaker 1: it in the draft, and that might mean third overall.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I would say it could mean thirty fourth overall, which
- 6:11Speaker 1: they have that pick quarterbacks who could be targets. I
- 6:15Speaker 1: don't see cam Ward unless you trade up for one
- 6:18Speaker 1: being there at number three. So you start going down
- 6:21Speaker 1: the list and it's maybe Shador Sanders. But I really
- 6:23Speaker 1: like the sound of Jackson Dart to the Giants, So
- 6:27Speaker 1: in a ideal world for Giants fans, I think it's
- 6:30Speaker 1: Rogers for a year with Jackson Dart in the room.
- 6:33Speaker 1: If you listen to Zach Wilson, if you listen to
- 6:36Speaker 1: Jordan love Rogers as much as a monster. The media
- 6:38Speaker 1: made him out to be not a bad guy to
- 6:40Speaker 1: young quarterbacks, and definitely was not. Brett Farv to him
- 6:44Speaker 1: is a giving guy, is a mentor in many ways
- 6:47Speaker 1: and has always been good to those younger quarterbacks in
- 6:50Speaker 1: the room, whether it be a Tim Boyle or a
- 6:53Speaker 1: Matt Flynn or in this case in recent years, Zach Wilson,
- 6:58Speaker 1: Jordan Travis, who is it whoever? I would think the
- 7:02Speaker 1: Giants would be very happy with a Jackson Dart long term.
- 7:06Speaker 2: And Aaron Rodgers short term.
- 7:08Speaker 1: But as you're listening to this, that plan might go
- 7:11Speaker 1: awry because there's talked that the Steelers, with fields now
- 7:14Speaker 1: out the door to the Jets, could be all in
- 7:17Speaker 1: on Rogers. Darnold was a talking point for the Steelers.
- 7:21Speaker 1: He's not going there. Russell Wilson was there last year.
- 7:24Speaker 1: We hear that they're moving on from him. So right now,
- 7:28Speaker 1: if you're Aaron Rodgers and were again, our three oh
- 7:30Speaker 1: seven pm Easterns is an emergency podcast. Is three hours
- 7:34Speaker 1: into free agency? Are you going to the Steelers or
- 7:38Speaker 1: the Giants? If the money is the same with the Steelers,
- 7:41Speaker 1: the Pros are probably a better roster, probably a more
- 7:45Speaker 1: established franchise as far as recent years goes. And then
- 7:50Speaker 1: probably a coach that you've long admired for the Giants.
- 7:54Speaker 1: The Pros are Brian Dables, an offensive head coach, the
- 7:59Speaker 1: Giants have Molik neighbors, and the Giants, well, you don't
- 8:04Speaker 1: have to uproot your life now.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Look, does he live in Malibu full time?
- 8:08Speaker 1: Does he spend time in all these other countries, traveling
- 8:11Speaker 1: and finding himself?
- 8:12Speaker 2: Yes?
- 8:13Speaker 1: Do I think Aaron Rodgers owning a home in Montclear,
- 8:15Speaker 1: New Jersey is going to be what breaks the tie here?
- 8:18Speaker 2: No, Aaron Rodgers can buy and.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Sell homes three hundred and sixty five days of the
- 8:22Speaker 1: year's plenty of money left over. He's made more money
- 8:25Speaker 1: as an NFL quarterback than any person in the history
- 8:28Speaker 1: of the game.
- 8:28Speaker 2: That said, if he likes his.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Community, if he likes being in the spotlight of New York,
- 8:33Speaker 1: if he likes having the comforts of being able to
- 8:36Speaker 1: stay where he lives and not having to uproot his
- 8:38Speaker 1: life again, there is something too staying with the Giants.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So Aaron Rodgers goes from being this discarded quarterback of
- 8:46Speaker 1: the Jets to now potentially being able to choose his
- 8:49Speaker 1: next home between those two franchises. Some quick other thoughts,
- 8:55Speaker 1: I would say, I like what the Patriots did and
- 8:58Speaker 1: I know I've already gotten crushed in my timeline for
- 9:01Speaker 1: positively talking about the Patriots just because they're.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Shlling out money.
- 9:04Speaker 1: But I think Milton Williams was the top free agent
- 9:07Speaker 1: in this in this entire free agent class that was
- 9:10Speaker 1: left over as far as you know, guys who were
- 9:13Speaker 1: ascending at that age.
- 9:15Speaker 2: They signed him.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Now, yes, twenty six million dollars a year is a ton,
- 9:18Speaker 1: but the money at this point, guys, it's it's fungible
- 9:22Speaker 1: in a way that next year the salard CAP's going
- 9:23Speaker 1: to go up even more than the new year after
- 9:25Speaker 1: that's going to go even more.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Like, don't get caught up.
- 9:27Speaker 1: On the money when it comes to these guys, because
- 9:29Speaker 1: the money's a lot, and the salary cap was completely changed.
- 9:32Speaker 1: So the Patriots had money going in, and then they
- 9:34Speaker 1: had even more money after that. So did they offer
- 9:36Speaker 1: him the most I don't know, but I know there
- 9:38Speaker 1: were other teams involved. I know that the Cardinals were interested.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I don't think the Panthers were as interested. I know
- 9:43Speaker 1: there were some tweets saying there that he had signed
- 9:45Speaker 1: with the Panthers. That's not anything that was worth you know,
- 9:49Speaker 1: retweeting or commenting on because that wasn't the case, and
- 9:51Speaker 1: it ends up going to the Patriots. Splaine Long has
- 9:55Speaker 1: been a good player, they get him, Morgan Moses, they
- 9:58Speaker 1: bring him in, and you go through the names and
- 10:00Speaker 1: yesterday Harold Landry, these are guys.
- 10:03Speaker 2: These are guys.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Now. I would still look at the Patriots and say
- 10:06Speaker 1: they need more on the offensive tackle position, and I
- 10:10Speaker 1: guess they'll go offensive line in the draft with that
- 10:12Speaker 1: fourth pick. Gosh will Campbell. Are we sure he's a
- 10:16Speaker 1: left tackle? Are we sure he's even a tackle at all?
- 10:18Speaker 1: Or is he a guard? That's really rich at fourth overall,
- 10:20Speaker 1: But that's the top offensive lineman in this draft if
- 10:23Speaker 1: they go that way. As of this recording, Patrick McCarry
- 10:27Speaker 1: is still not signed anywhere.
- 10:29Speaker 2: He's a great Ravens player.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Perhaps he's the guy that they go with and they
- 10:35Speaker 1: fill these holes with.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Some other stuff. As we're going through this the Chiefs.
- 10:42Speaker 1: You hate seeing them lose Joe Toney, they had to
- 10:45Speaker 1: do it. But I love what they've done the last
- 10:47Speaker 1: few days. They've continued to add players, bring back guys.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Nick Bolton a huge addition for Kansas City. Not gonna
- 10:54Speaker 1: steal any headlines. That was a big one. I'm just
- 10:58Speaker 1: going through these real quick here.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I like what the Bears did bringing in my guy Deo.
- 11:02Speaker 1: If you listened to last week's pod with Mike Garatfolo,
- 11:06Speaker 1: we discover mister Doo And if you're wondering who mister
- 11:09Speaker 1: Doo is, it's Indianapolis Colts for a few years there
- 11:13Speaker 1: and his name is Deo odeya Ingbo. And I've butchered
- 11:18Speaker 1: that on national television. I've putchered that on podcasts. But
- 11:21Speaker 1: Bear signed him the big money and he is a
- 11:23Speaker 1: twenty five year old pass rusher that is ascending.
- 11:26Speaker 2: The Bears.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Of course, pick up Joe Toney. The Bears have done
- 11:30Speaker 1: good work the last few days and they continue to
- 11:33Speaker 1: add and I think deyo is was right up there
- 11:35Speaker 1: with Milton Williams as one of the top young ascending
- 11:38Speaker 1: defensive front seven players. All right, those are my initial takes.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Cowboys fans, I have nothing for you. I know they
- 11:47Speaker 1: brought back big Osa and they did. They let Jordan
- 11:50Speaker 1: Lewis walk out the door and they've been silent otherwise.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Sorry about that.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Bengals fans, you bring back everybody but Higgins, Hendrickson and Chase.
- 12:00Speaker 1: We'll see how Higgins and Chase go and if they
- 12:03Speaker 1: can figure out a deal, and oh yeah, one rant
- 12:07Speaker 1: Miles Garrett. I have no animosity towards Miles Garrett, but
- 12:12Speaker 1: I do want a lot of time and energy back
- 12:14Speaker 1: if you can give it to me. I spent a
- 12:16Speaker 1: lot of time on Good Morning Football talking about you
- 12:18Speaker 1: the last two weeks. I said it all along. There
- 12:21Speaker 1: was no way the Browns were trading them. They have
- 12:23Speaker 1: made that clear, and in hindsight, as we go through
- 12:26Speaker 1: all this, everyone who freaked out about Jimmy HASLM not
- 12:28Speaker 1: wanting to sit with Miles Garrett. Shame on you. You
- 12:32Speaker 1: can't be You can't have it both ways. You can't
- 12:34Speaker 1: complain about Jerry Jones meddling or Woody Johnson meddling and
- 12:39Speaker 1: then also want the owner of the Browns to suddenly
- 12:42Speaker 1: drop everything and negotiate with a player. I don't care
- 12:44Speaker 1: who the player is. We can't have it both ways.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Do you want your owners heavily involved or do you
- 12:50Speaker 1: not want your owners heavily involved? Is the first thing
- 12:52Speaker 1: we hear, that these owners get too much involved and
- 12:55Speaker 1: let the GM do his job. Jimmy Haslam the Browns
- 12:58Speaker 1: distanced themselves that I'm not meeting with Miles Garrett. We
- 13:01Speaker 1: have two years left on the contract and two years
- 13:03Speaker 1: after that. Let the GM do it well. The GM
- 13:06Speaker 1: found to make Miles Garrett happy. It wasn't with a
- 13:08Speaker 1: Super Bowl ring. It wasn't with more players. It was
- 13:10Speaker 1: with more money. Miles Garrett wrote a passionate letter about
- 13:14Speaker 1: how all he cares about is winning a Lombardi. Miles
- 13:17Speaker 1: Garrett went on the Rich Eisend Show and spoke about
- 13:19Speaker 1: how there's no dollar amount, there's there's no there's no
- 13:22Speaker 1: money that it could be spent. There is nothing having
- 13:26Speaker 1: to do with being the highest non paid player that
- 13:28Speaker 1: will even change his mind. He needs to be traded.
- 13:30Speaker 1: He wants to be traded. Well, here's the issue. Doesn't
- 13:34Speaker 1: have a no trade clause. So they could have sent
- 13:35Speaker 1: them anywhere. This could have sende the NFL oblivion wherever
- 13:38Speaker 1: that is besides Cleveland.
- 13:39Speaker 2: They could have sent them there.
- 13:41Speaker 1: And forty million dollars should us speak and Miles Garrett,
- 13:45Speaker 1: his agent, Nicole lind did a fine job getting him
- 13:47Speaker 1: this money, and whatever the conversations were, he seems to
- 13:50Speaker 1: have had a change of heart quote unquote, So Miles Garrett,
- 13:54Speaker 1: it's amazing how that works, and I don't spite you.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I just wish we didn't spend so much energy super
- 14:00Speaker 1: Bowl Week, not talking about the Chiefs and Eagles, and
- 14:02Speaker 1: so much energy at the combine, not talking about Shador
- 14:05Speaker 1: and Kim War and all those guys, and instead talking
- 14:09Speaker 1: about Miles Garrett and his steadfast desire to be a
- 14:12Speaker 1: Super Bowl champion. He will go back to the Browns
- 14:14Speaker 1: where he'll make forty million dollars and the team is
- 14:17Speaker 1: even more financially strapped to give him more assistance and
- 14:20Speaker 1: help as they were before this whole entire experience. All right,
- 14:25Speaker 1: quick instant reaction from our guy Danny from Lottie right
- 14:28Speaker 1: after this.
- 14:37Speaker 2: All right, no further ado. This is our guy.
- 14:40Speaker 1: We talked to him earlier this season when they were
- 14:42Speaker 1: about to start their coaching in GM higher process. He
- 14:46Speaker 1: is the biggest Jets fan I know, and they have
- 14:48Speaker 1: a new quarterback and Justin Fields. They also signed Justin
- 14:52Speaker 1: Fields with absolutely no leaks out of the building and
- 14:55Speaker 1: not a single negative story of the past few weeks
- 14:58Speaker 1: as far as dysfunction in the building. He is no
- 15:01Speaker 1: longer a season ticket holder, but he is my dear
- 15:04Speaker 1: friend who I like to play a little paddle with
- 15:07Speaker 1: and now we're talking a little paddling of the Jets
- 15:10Speaker 1: topic here, Danny from Lattie, how are you feeling Justin Fields?
- 15:14Speaker 1: Two years, forty million, New York Jets, new quarterback?
- 15:18Speaker 2: Are you buying the jersey?
- 15:20Speaker 3: What's going on? Shrakes?
- 15:21Speaker 4: Thanks for having me on this crazy opening day, a
- 15:24Speaker 4: free agency.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Historic day where Twitter went down.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, back to my college days.
- 15:29Speaker 4: A refreshing pro football talk to see you know who
- 15:32Speaker 4: I'm going to be disappointed about next. But look, I
- 15:36Speaker 4: think Justin Fields is a low risk, high upside signing.
- 15:41Speaker 4: I wasn't banging the table for Justin like our other
- 15:43Speaker 4: paddle buddy, Eric. You know, half his dream offseason is
- 15:47Speaker 4: complete now with Fields. You know, in his perfect world,
- 15:50Speaker 4: Fields will be throwing to Tyler Warren. But look, with
- 15:54Speaker 4: what was available, I think this is the best outcome.
- 15:59Speaker 4: We couldn't go into the season riding Tyrod Taylor. You know,
- 16:03Speaker 4: Tyrod's a good guy, good spots starter. But with Dustin Fields,
- 16:08Speaker 4: you know, I look at it as you know, I
- 16:10Speaker 4: don't want to say a lot of ticket, but maybe
- 16:12Speaker 4: maybe you hit here. The money's not so big, it's
- 16:15Speaker 4: not a big commitment and Look, he's explosive and he
- 16:21Speaker 4: makes exciting plays. Maybe he can bring some life back
- 16:25Speaker 4: into MetLife. I don't I'm not upset at the signing.
- 16:30Speaker 4: And if you can't get if you look at fields.
- 16:33Speaker 4: He ended twenty twenty three on a high note. The
- 16:36Speaker 4: last seven games he was four and three, threw for
- 16:40Speaker 4: five touchdowns, rush for another three.
- 16:42Speaker 1: They had a chance to do something in the last
- 16:45Speaker 1: week of the season and stop.
- 16:46Speaker 2: The Lions from from you know whatever. It went in
- 16:49Speaker 2: the line, and he's stunk when it mattered. I'll just
- 16:50Speaker 2: say that. Everyone points to twenty twenty three.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I remember his final weeks of the season with the
- 16:54Speaker 1: Lot with the Bears, the go on, sorry sorry.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Sorry, okay, and then look started out four and two
- 16:59Speaker 4: with Pittsburgh.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Wasn't fine, dude, benched in that game.
- 17:03Speaker 2: He wasn't.
- 17:04Speaker 5: He wasn't, you know, throwing it all over the lot
- 17:06Speaker 5: like it up. But he protected the ball.
- 17:09Speaker 3: He only had one interception in the six games.
- 17:12Speaker 4: He did, you know what it took to win, you know,
- 17:17Speaker 4: in four out of the six, and it looked like
- 17:20Speaker 4: he was you know, it looked like he you know,
- 17:23Speaker 4: he was progressing. So it would have been nice to
- 17:26Speaker 4: see him play a few more games with Pittsburgh and
- 17:29Speaker 4: see if he developed a little more.
- 17:31Speaker 3: But maybe we have something here.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Okay, what's it tell you that A I think he
- 17:35Speaker 1: did choose the Jets over Pittsburgh and b the fact
- 17:39Speaker 1: that Mike Tomlin two different questions. One he picked the
- 17:42Speaker 1: Jets over Pittsburg, which is rare to say, oh, I
- 17:44Speaker 1: want that situation. And then the second one, Mike Tomlin
- 17:47Speaker 1: went to Russell Wilson over him, and as Russell Wilson
- 17:50Speaker 1: began to go, you know, slide downwards and play poorly
- 17:54Speaker 1: down the rest of the season, did not go back
- 17:56Speaker 1: to Justin Fields.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Well, first off, why did he pick New York? You know,
- 18:01Speaker 3: I'm guessing that.
- 18:02Speaker 4: The money was a lot bigger with the Jets and Steelers,
- 18:05Speaker 4: and probably the Jets were giving him more of a
- 18:07Speaker 4: commitment level, saying you're the guy.
- 18:10Speaker 3: You know, you're the starter, here's the ball, let's go.
- 18:14Speaker 4: And obviously I'm sure Fields, you know, isn't too thrilled
- 18:19Speaker 4: with Tomlin after getting yanked, you know, starting out four
- 18:22Speaker 4: and two.
- 18:24Speaker 3: But you know what's not being talked enough about here is.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Maybe he wanted to, you know, get back with Garrett Wilson,
- 18:32Speaker 4: who he had that connection with at Ohio State. And look,
- 18:36Speaker 4: if you remember when we talked on the pod during
- 18:39Speaker 4: the coaching search and we were talking about Rogers and
- 18:43Speaker 4: you know, just the landscape of the team. What I said,
- 18:46Speaker 4: one of the most important things was is Garrett Wilson
- 18:49Speaker 4: gonna be happy if we bring back Rogers?
- 18:51Speaker 3: And I think we realized now the answer would have
- 18:53Speaker 3: been no.
- 18:55Speaker 4: So if you were going to bring anybody in to
- 18:57Speaker 4: make Garrett happy, Field was the guy. And maybe Fields,
- 19:02Speaker 4: you know, wanted to come back and play with Garrett
- 19:05Speaker 4: and on the Jets. I don't think there's any question
- 19:07Speaker 4: that he's going to be the guy and they're going
- 19:10Speaker 4: to ride it out and see what he can do,
- 19:11Speaker 4: and if it works out, you know, there's a good
- 19:16Speaker 4: chance he could be the long term solution here in
- 19:18Speaker 4: New York.
- 19:19Speaker 3: So I think that's why he picked the Jets. Why
- 19:23Speaker 3: did Tomlin stick with Ross?
- 19:26Speaker 4: Ross is a Super Bowl winning in that you know,
- 19:30Speaker 4: was protecting the ball. They were winning games, and yeah,
- 19:33Speaker 4: they hit that rough patch and where they were playing
- 19:36Speaker 4: playoff teams and they you know, they didn't win. But
- 19:39Speaker 4: I think Tomlin, you know, in typical Tomlin fashion, was
- 19:44Speaker 4: concerned about, you know, just getting into the playoffs and
- 19:48Speaker 4: having that another you know, playoff season on his resume,
- 19:52Speaker 4: probably knowing that whether it was Fields or Wilson, he
- 19:57Speaker 4: wasn't going to go very far anyway.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Okay, here, I'm gonna give you some updates in the
- 20:01Speaker 1: last five minutes, some news and if you're listening again,
- 20:04Speaker 1: we're recording this at three fifteen pm during there'll be
- 20:06Speaker 1: plenty more by the time this goes up and it's posted.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Josh Sweat leaves the Eagles for the Arizona Cardinals on
- 20:13Speaker 2: a monster deal.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Okay, so that's one Tellanoah Hufonga, who had a great
- 20:19Speaker 1: twenty twenty two and has been missing on the field
- 20:22Speaker 1: from twenty three to twenty four, signs with the Denver Broncos.
- 20:26Speaker 1: And there is still no word on Aaron Rodgers to
- 20:31Speaker 1: the Giants or Aaron Rodgers to the Pittsburgh Steelers. As
- 20:35Speaker 1: we record this, I believe that is going to be
- 20:38Speaker 1: the next domino to drop. And then you'll see Daniel
- 20:40Speaker 1: Jones sign somewhere, and then you will probably see Russell
- 20:43Speaker 1: Wilson sign somewhere. Could you believe it as a Jets
- 20:47Speaker 1: fan that Aaron Rodgers is being heavily quartered by the Giants,
- 20:50Speaker 1: and the Giants are more or less waiting on Aaron Rodgers' decision.
- 20:54Speaker 4: It feels like a couple of years ago with the Jets,
- 20:57Speaker 4: where you had a coach and a gm who are
- 20:59Speaker 4: fighting for their lives here and need to, you know.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Need to make the playoffs to keep their jobs.
- 21:06Speaker 4: And as tempting as it may be for Shane and
- 21:09Speaker 4: day Ball to get Rogers in there so they can,
- 21:12Speaker 4: you know, convince themselves that they're going to be competitive,
- 21:15Speaker 4: I just I don't think it's the right move.
- 21:16Speaker 3: I don't think it's the right move for the Giants.
- 21:18Speaker 3: I don't think it's the right move for Rodgers.
- 21:19Speaker 4: If I'm Rogers, I'm doing whatever I can to get
- 21:21Speaker 4: to Pittsburgh. Look, Pittsburgh seems like regardless of who plays quarterback,
- 21:26Speaker 4: they're in the hunt they make the playoffs.
- 21:29Speaker 3: And now with DK.
- 21:31Speaker 4: That defense and Tomlin, that's an attractive situation for any quarterback.
- 21:35Speaker 3: And Rogers didn't play terrible last year. I think a
- 21:39Speaker 3: lot of games. I think they lost a lot of
- 21:41Speaker 3: games because of the defense, not because of him.
- 21:43Speaker 1: And you fired a coach five weeks into the season,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and you fired the like it's complete this function. You
- 21:49Speaker 1: have to admit, as much as it's fun to have
- 21:53Speaker 1: stories and gossip like it is kind of a refreshing
- 21:56Speaker 1: first couple of weeks with Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn
- 21:58Speaker 1: and Rick Spielman that there.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Hasn't been a peep out of that building.
- 22:02Speaker 4: I think people just aren't so interested in the team,
- 22:05Speaker 4: and everyone is just down and really has no expectations.
- 22:10Speaker 4: So we're all just paying attention to other things. And
- 22:12Speaker 4: I think I think the media is as well. There's
- 22:16Speaker 4: no shortage of action elsewhere around the league that they
- 22:18Speaker 4: can focus on instead of, you know, beating the dead
- 22:21Speaker 4: horse of you know, this downtrodden franch.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I Metugi at the combine. I was impressed. I never
- 22:29Speaker 1: met him before. I was impressed.
- 22:32Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 22:33Speaker 4: I mean, if Sean Payton likes him, I like him.
- 22:39Speaker 4: He knows football, so we'll see. I mean, I think
- 22:41Speaker 4: it's Aaron Glenn's show. And I think the thing that
- 22:44Speaker 4: I'm probably do have some hope about is that it
- 22:47Speaker 4: seems like the GM and the cultural aligned and they're
- 22:49Speaker 4: on the same page, and you know they're going to
- 22:51Speaker 4: work together to you know, instill their vision here, not
- 22:58Speaker 4: what we've had.
- 22:59Speaker 3: In the past. But I have no expectations for Mugie.
- 23:02Speaker 3: I mean, we'll see.
- 23:03Speaker 4: I mean one thing, if I'm Mugie, I'm letting this
- 23:07Speaker 4: justin fields acquisition get in the way of drafting a quarterback,
- 23:10Speaker 4: you know, whether that's somebody at seven. If you believe
- 23:15Speaker 4: there's a guy there that you know could be a
- 23:18Speaker 4: franchise quarterback, then why not take them. If you want
- 23:21Speaker 4: to wait and maybe trade back into the twenties to
- 23:25Speaker 4: get somebody like Baltimore did with Lamar, and let's do that.
- 23:29Speaker 4: But I wouldn't just be going all in on fields
- 23:32Speaker 4: here and saying, Okay, we got our guy.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:34Speaker 1: In closing two questions, One, you have given up your
- 23:39Speaker 1: season tickets. Does any of this encourage you to want to,
- 23:42Speaker 1: you know, re up and go call the Jets ticket
- 23:44Speaker 1: line and invest your money again into Jets season ticket holding?
- 23:48Speaker 3: Absolutely not.
- 23:49Speaker 6: I need to see I need to see a I
- 23:53Speaker 6: need to see a product on the field that gets
- 23:55Speaker 6: me excited, that gets me to buy back in, that
- 23:59Speaker 6: just shows that we're a respectable team that is prepared,
- 24:04Speaker 6: that actually looks like they practice.
- 24:07Speaker 3: And you know, can compete against the better teams in
- 24:10Speaker 3: the league. Until then, I'm you don't.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Get my money now, and you don't get my love.
- 24:17Speaker 1: And then more importantly, we're recording this Monday three thirty tonight.
- 24:21Speaker 1: We have a sport called paddle that we play every
- 24:24Speaker 1: Monday night in Brooklyn at the Spot Paddle House. Now,
- 24:28Speaker 1: Andrew Schultz, the star comedian, has a big special on Netflix.
- 24:32Speaker 1: He went on Joe Rogan and started talking about our sport,
- 24:35Speaker 1: and Rogan had never heard of it. It's this good
- 24:37Speaker 1: for our small sport of paddle, which is two on
- 24:41Speaker 1: two tennis with glass walls, that we have.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Been playing for years.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Or is this now here come the unwashed masses into
- 24:47Speaker 1: our lovely little sport like an indie band that has
- 24:50Speaker 1: been discovered by pop radio, and now it's just going
- 24:52Speaker 1: to be overrun with new people that we that we
- 24:54Speaker 1: aren't familiar with playing our sport.
- 24:57Speaker 3: I think it's great.
- 24:58Speaker 4: I think more and more people are realizing that this
- 25:01Speaker 4: is something real.
- 25:02Speaker 5: This isn't you know, some you know, fly by night,
- 25:07Speaker 5: some version of pickleball.
- 25:09Speaker 3: That you know people talk badly about. You know, to
- 25:11Speaker 3: play paddle, you have to be a real athlete. You
- 25:13Speaker 3: need short area quickness.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Maybe we can have a little paddle combine yep, you know,
- 25:17Speaker 4: one of these days. But if anything, you know, I
- 25:20Speaker 4: think it will bring more athletes to the space, more
- 25:23Speaker 4: fun people for us to play with, and you know,
- 25:28Speaker 4: hopefully more paddle facilities for us to test.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I will say this.
- 25:34Speaker 1: I've gotten so many text from people knowing that I
- 25:37Speaker 1: love this sport that Schultz even mentioned it on Joe
- 25:40Speaker 1: Rogan that I've got to say. The antennas are up,
- 25:43Speaker 1: the radars are up, but you are a day one
- 25:46Speaker 1: ambassador of the game. And if you haven't played paddle,
- 25:49Speaker 1: it's very New York, it's very la It's coming. I
- 25:52Speaker 1: know they opened one in Nashville, and it's big in
- 25:54Speaker 1: Florida as well, and huge in Europe.
- 25:57Speaker 2: It's how would you explain it?
- 25:58Speaker 1: It's two on two tennis with these glass walls on
- 26:01Speaker 1: the side, and it is the only sport that I
- 26:05Speaker 1: think is like truly social and you meet new people
- 26:08Speaker 1: and we have had such a blast. We have before
- 26:10Speaker 1: some that we play with, but I am by far
- 26:13Speaker 1: the worst player in our foursome and you have not
- 26:16Speaker 1: knocked me out of this group yet.
- 26:17Speaker 2: So I appreciate you being we.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Keep you in for the mahomes. No, look, you know
- 26:22Speaker 3: that's it.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I have as and and the pizza reservations afterwards, so
- 26:27Speaker 1: we'll see.
- 26:28Speaker 2: That's it, all.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Right, get back to work. You've got actual deals to do.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I'm just sitting here waiting on others to make deals.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I appreciate you. I'll see you tonight and by then
- 26:36Speaker 1: we'll probably know where Aaron Rodgers is playing next year.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Sounds good, thanks, Rakes.
- 26:41Speaker 2: All right.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Shout out to Danny from lot E or Danny formerly
- 26:45Speaker 1: from lot E, diehard Jets fan.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Who it's Danny from the couch.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Now, Danny from the couch, Danny from the couch with
- 26:54Speaker 1: Adam Archaltta on the call.
- 26:55Speaker 2: That's how that's going to go this year. So enjoy it,
- 26:57Speaker 2: all right, buddy. So that's the Jets fan perspective.
- 27:10Speaker 1: It would be a whole lot different if I had
- 27:11Speaker 1: a Giants fan perspective on right now, they are freaking out.
- 27:15Speaker 1: I think Ryan Russillo had a funny, funny post. He
- 27:19Speaker 1: was like, let me find it said, Field's approval rating
- 27:23Speaker 1: on X is the only thing close to Chalame right now.
- 27:25Speaker 1: It's true, like Jets fans are treating justin Fields like
- 27:27Speaker 1: he's Joe Montana. At least Die Danny was a little
- 27:30Speaker 1: more moderate in his appraise for him. But we'll see
- 27:34Speaker 1: how it goes. This is just the first three hours
- 27:36Speaker 1: of free agency. Wanted to get some content out there.
- 27:38Speaker 1: If you're listening, chime in, tweet the show, tweet us.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Although Twitter was down for the first two hours offraise,
- 27:45Speaker 1: which actually made it kind of fun. I actually enjoyed
- 27:48Speaker 1: that I was checking NFL dot com refreshing. I will
- 27:51Speaker 1: say this, the NFL Instagram never did I ever check it,
- 27:54Speaker 1: and I finally I'm like, all right, I'm gonna go
- 27:55Speaker 1: to them. And the first thing at noon they posted
- 27:58Speaker 1: was like, you know, an announcement of Olivia Colpo and
- 28:02Speaker 1: Christian McCaffrey having a baby, and like, not today, guys,
- 28:05Speaker 1: not today, not the audience. But congratulations to the McCaffrey
- 28:10Speaker 1: Colpo clan on that one.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Plenty of more pods to come.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Maybe we'll do another one tomorrow or this week and
- 28:18Speaker 1: we'll give our reactions.
- 28:20Speaker 2: But there it is, first three hours of free agency.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Here in the books. Thanks for listening.
