- 0:22Thanks for listening. Today's Scripture comes from
- 0:29Book of First Samuel chapter 28 verses 3 through 20.
- 0:35Now Samuel was dead and all Israel had mourn for him and
- 0:39buried him in his own town of Rama.
- 0:41Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land.
- 0:45The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunam,
- 0:49while Saul gathered all the Israelites and set up camp out
- 0:53at set up camp at Gilboa. When Saul saw this Phil.
- 0:57When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid terror
- 1:00filled his heart. He inquired of the Lord, but the
- 1:03Lord did not answer him by dreams or orum, or prophets.
- 1:07Saul then said to his attendants, Find me a woman who
- 1:10is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.
- 1:13There is one in Endor, they said.
- 1:16So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at
- 1:19night he and two men went to the woman.
- 1:22Consult a spirit for me, he said, and bring up for me the
- 1:25one I name. But the woman said to him,
- 1:28Surely you know what Saul has done?
- 1:30He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land.
- 1:33Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?
- 1:37Saul swore to her by the Lord, as surely as the Lord lives, you
- 1:40will not be punished for this. When the woman asked, Whom shall
- 1:44I bring up for you? Bring up Samuel, he said.
- 1:48When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the at the top of
- 1:50her voice and said to Saul, Why have you deceived me?
- 1:53You are Saul, the king said to her, Don't be afraid.
- 1:57What do you see? The woman said, I see a spirit
- 2:00coming up out of the ground. What does he look like?
- 2:03He asked. An old man wearing a robe is
- 2:06coming up, she said. Then Saul knew it was Samuel,
- 2:09and he bowed and prostrated himself with his face to the
- 2:11ground. Samuel said to Saul, Why have
- 2:14you disturbed me by bringing me up?
- 2:17I am in great distress. Saul said.
- 2:18The Philistines are fighting against me and God has turned
- 2:21away from me. He no longer answers me either
- 2:23by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell
- 2:27me what to do. Samuel said, Why do you consult
- 2:30me now that the Lord has turned away from you and become your
- 2:33enemy? The Lord has done what he
- 2:35predicted through me. The Lord has torn the Kingdom
- 2:37out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors, to
- 2:40David, because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce
- 2:44wrath against the Amalekites. The Lord has done this to you.
- 2:47Today the Lord will hand over Israel and you to the
- 2:50Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me.
- 2:54The Lord will also hand over the army of Israel to the
- 2:56Philistines. Immediately Saul fell full
- 2:59length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel's
- 3:02words. His strength was gone, for he
- 3:04had eaten nothing all that day and night.
- 3:06This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
- 3:11Ever hear a sermon on this passage before?
- 3:16Maybe, maybe not, but we'll we'll see what God has to say
- 3:21for us. I think when it comes to hearing
- 3:24God, as we've been talking about throughout this series there,
- 3:30there have been different times in my life where I've had
- 3:34questions about what that looks like and what it means.
- 3:38And it's just a guess, but I'd imagine that it's fair to assume
- 3:44that maybe you have too had some of those same questions, right?
- 3:49Maybe even during this sermon series, or maybe because of this
- 3:54sermon series questions like, why do other people seem to hear
- 3:59God but I don't? Or if God is speaking, why don't
- 4:07I hear him all the time? How can I know for certain that
- 4:12that what I'm hearing is from God or that I'm hearing
- 4:16correctly? Or maybe why didn't God speak
- 4:20into that really important situation in my life?
- 4:26I think it's normal for questions like these two arise
- 4:30as we learn to hear and recognize God's voice.
- 4:34And this is especially true, I think if we come from
- 4:38backgrounds that say that God doesn't speak that way anymore
- 4:44or backgrounds where we just don't talk about those kind of
- 4:48things. But I think besides just the
- 4:52learning process, which can often feel like we're taking 2
- 4:56steps forward and one step back, there are some other things that
- 5:01keep us from hearing God. And that's what I want to talk
- 5:05about today, where we're going to invert things a little bit
- 5:11this morning. And rather than speaking more
- 5:13about how we hear God's voice today, I want to talk to you
- 5:18this morning about how to not hear God's voice and how to not
- 5:24hear God's voice because I think things often become more clear
- 5:28when we identify what they are not, right?
- 5:32So today's message is how to not hear God's voice.
- 5:37Sounds like good advice, right? But we're, we're going to look
- 5:41at this, this story from the life of Saul, not the Saul we
- 5:46spoke about last week, right? Who's better known to us as the
- 5:49Apostle Paul. This is a different Saul from a
- 5:52different period in the story that God has written in history.
- 5:56This is King Saul, Israel's first king.
- 6:02OK. So this story, it comes from
- 6:04late in Saul's life. Samuel the prophet has had
- 6:09anointed Saul as king. He'd conveyed various messages
- 6:15to Saul on God's behalf. Specifically, he'd God had
- 6:20spoken to Saul through Samuel, telling him that his
- 6:24disobedience had resulted in God removing his presence from
- 6:31saul's life. Samuel had anointed David king
- 6:37to be had anointed David to be king in Saul's place.
- 6:43And now Samuel the great prophet has died and Saul finds himself
- 6:50needing guidance about how to deal with Israel's enemies.
- 6:55And Saul isn't quite sure where to turn.
- 7:01He tries asking God about what he should do, but Saul doesn't
- 7:06receive a vision or a dream with an answer of how he should
- 7:10approach this conflict with the Philistines.
- 7:13God doesn't send a prophet with a message to Saul this time, and
- 7:19God gave no answer through the Urim.
- 7:24Ever heard about the Urim before the Urim and the Thummim?
- 7:29They're in the Bible. I promise.
- 7:32These were stones that God had given to Israel's high priest to
- 7:38be able to figure out what God's will was in different
- 7:43situations. We we would think of it a little
- 7:45bit like rolling dice to get God's will, which I wouldn't
- 7:50recommend in this day and age, but it's what God actually
- 7:53commanded the high priest to do. They'd do something with these
- 8:00two stones and they would know what God's will was.
- 8:05But not this time. Not for Saul.
- 8:09There was no answer. Either God wasn't speaking or
- 8:15there was no way for Saul to hear.
- 8:19So Saul gets this brilliant idea that he is going to consult a
- 8:25medium right? Even though he knew better and
- 8:28as king he had expelled the mediums and the spiritists from
- 8:33the nation of Israel, so he knew what he was doing.
- 8:38If you don't know, a medium is someone who communicates with
- 8:41the dead or sometimes even channelling that dead spirits
- 8:46voice and presence through their own body.
- 8:51So Saul asked, where can I find a woman like that?
- 8:56In ancient times, mediums were primarily women.
- 8:59And so he's given a location, the village of Endor, and Saul
- 9:05goes at night wearing a disguise to participate in a forbidden
- 9:11seance. After convincing the woman that
- 9:18she wouldn't be punished for this activity, which they both
- 9:22knew had been outlawed in the nation of Israel, Saul tells her
- 9:27to bring up the ghost of Samuel. And she does.
- 9:35This is a weird story, right? We, we don't quite know what to
- 9:40make of this, I think a lot of times, but, but we're getting
- 9:44there. OK, I, I, I just had to
- 9:47acknowledge that this is, we're not used to reading stories like
- 9:50this, even in the Bible, but here we are.
- 9:54So after the medium brings up Samuel's ghost, I think Saul
- 9:59immediately regretted it. Samuel was none too happy, and
- 10:06when he asked Saul what he was doing, Saul's answer was, well,
- 10:10God has left me, he's not speaking to me.
- 10:14So I thought you might be able to guide me again.
- 10:19That's the Scott Rambo version. Anyway, Saul recognized that the
- 10:26reason he wasn't hearing from God was because God's presence
- 10:31had left him. Samuel had already told Saul
- 10:35that that was going to happen and that it had happened, right?
- 10:40So again, Samuel gives Saul a little reminder, history lesson
- 10:45about why that was the case, why that had happened the way it
- 10:50had, right. Saul had disobeyed God by not
- 10:54following his instructions completely because of his own
- 10:58greed, his fear of the people around him.
- 11:01He didn't do all that God had told him to do.
- 11:04So God had torn the Kingdom from Saul's hands and given it
- 11:09instead to David. But Saul was still acting as
- 11:17king, and David was running around hiding among probably the
- 11:23same Philistines who were attacking Saul right now.
- 11:27But now God was going to give Saul and his sons and the
- 11:35Israelites over to their enemies.
- 11:41And I don't think I could be wrong, but I don't think this
- 11:46was the guidance that Saul was hoping to receive when he called
- 11:51Samuel up from the grave. I think they're they're at least
- 11:59a few reasons here, a few lessons we can learn from this
- 12:04story in Saul's life about how to not hear God's voice.
- 12:11So if you don't want to hear God speak to you, pay attention this
- 12:16morning. OK, First Saul tried to get an
- 12:22answer to an important question when he wasn't walking with God,
- 12:31right? So if you don't want to hear
- 12:32God's voice, only go to God with your really big, urgent,
- 12:38important decisions that you need an answer to, right?
- 12:43Try to force God to speak into a situation when you haven't been
- 12:48cultivating A conversational relationship with God where
- 12:52where you haven't been talking to him and he hasn't been
- 12:54talking to you. I mean, how does it feel when
- 13:01your phone rings and and you pick it up and you look and you
- 13:06see the name of that certain family member or or friend come
- 13:12up on your phone? You know the one I mean, right?
- 13:17The the one who only ever calls when things are really, really
- 13:21bad. The one who only calls when they
- 13:24need you to do something to help them get out of a jam.
- 13:30You know that friend or family member.
- 13:34You haven't heard from them in over a year, but you know that
- 13:38if you answer the call, it's going to be the same old story.
- 13:42And that story is going to end with an ask, whether explicit or
- 13:48just implied. We don't like it any more than
- 13:53God does, right? So if you only, if you don't
- 13:58want to hear God speak, only go to him when you need something
- 14:04from him, when you need an answer to that really big
- 14:07question and you need that answer right now.
- 14:11That's the first lesson. Second thing I see in Saul's
- 14:15story with this medium was that before Saul went to the medium,
- 14:21the psychic, the fortune teller, kind of get the idea there.
- 14:25He tried to treat God like a fortune teller, right?
- 14:31Saul treated like treated God like someone who only existed to
- 14:36guide his own decision making when the way forward wasn't
- 14:41abundantly clear. God was someone to be consulted
- 14:46at Saul's convenience when it was helpful to him, when he
- 14:52needed something right. Saul traded the the personal
- 14:56relationship with God for a purely functional relationship
- 15:02with God. God or Saul didn't really care
- 15:05what God wanted in the situation.
- 15:08Saul wanted God's power to work in the situation for Saul's
- 15:13benefit. That's what Saul really wanted.
- 15:17So if you don't want to hear God's voice, try relating to God
- 15:24like you're involved in an exchange of goods.
- 15:27All right, Good old capitalism at work.
- 15:29Saul needed what God had. But unfortunately, by this
- 15:35point, Saul didn't have anything that God wanted, right?
- 15:42But God isn't after this kind of exchange of goods.
- 15:45He's, he's looking for an exchange of life, all that we
- 15:50are for, all that He is, his life flowing into and
- 15:56transforming ours. So if you want to not hear God's
- 16:02voice, treat him like a fortune teller or a vending machine
- 16:08that's there when you need him #3 in addition to asking.
- 16:15Asking without walking with God and treating like God, like an
- 16:20object of convenience. Saul, we say he was impatient.
- 16:26He didn't give God time to speak in God's own time or or space to
- 16:31speak about the things that God wanted to speak to Saul about.
- 16:37This is related to the previous two.
- 16:38They're they're all pretty closely related here in this
- 16:41story. But but, but in this story, Saul
- 16:45presumed to know when and what God should want to speak to him
- 16:50about. Saul was asking a very specific
- 16:55question on a very specific timeline about which he only
- 17:01wanted to hear a very specific answer.
- 17:09And when Saul asked God about how to deal with the
- 17:13Philistines, he wasn't looking for an answer about his failures
- 17:19or his character or the judgement he was experiencing.
- 17:23Saul wanted to know how to win the battle, and he wanted to
- 17:28know right now. So if you don't want to hear
- 17:31from God, only go to Him when you don't have time to wait, and
- 17:38only when you already know what you want to hear Him say.
- 17:44It's a good formula to not hear God.
- 17:48The fourth thing you can do if you want to not hear from God is
- 17:54like Saul. Do what you know to be against
- 17:58God's will. Live the thing.
- 18:01Live like the things that God has already told you to do or
- 18:05not do. Don't matter, right?
- 18:08In short, sin knowingly, willfully, joyfully, right?
- 18:16Because sin separates us from God.
- 18:19It breaks our relationship with Him, and it hardens our heart
- 18:23toward Him. And if you don't want to hear
- 18:26God's voice, live however you want.
- 18:31Live like there's no one to whom you owe your allegiance, like
- 18:35you have no one to answer to but yourself.
- 18:43Last thing I want to share with you that I see in Saul's during
- 18:48the story of Saul not hearing from God, which drove him to
- 18:52take matters into his own hands and and go way outside the
- 18:57bounds of what God had said was permissible.
- 19:02What I see is that Saul in his pride presumed that God would
- 19:10answer him, either because of his role as the king of God's
- 19:14people or because Saul had such an urgent need, or because
- 19:20Saul's previous relationship with God, he presumed that God
- 19:27would still answer him. Now we often hold hold Saul up
- 19:33in contrast to David, right that the man after God's own heart.
- 19:40Let's not forget that Saul had also been anointed king of
- 19:46Israel. He was the one that God
- 19:49identified to Samuel, the one on whom God bestowed his spirit,
- 19:55the one who one day prophesied after encountering a group of
- 20:00prophets. He was so full of the Spirit, he
- 20:02he joined in their prophesying. Friends, I don't think God
- 20:08anointed Saul to be king just to show the Israelites how bad
- 20:13having a human king would be. And then he gave David as the
- 20:18good example, right? I believe God would have blessed
- 20:22Saul and established his Kingdom if only he would have humbled
- 20:27himself and walked with God. So if you don't want to hear
- 20:34from God, if you don't want to hear him speak to you, adopt an
- 20:40attitude of pride and entitlement.
- 20:43Approach God like he owes it to you to answer you, to speak to
- 20:50you. Live in that kind of pride.
- 20:56Now, my preaching today, these points have been more than a bit
- 21:02tongue in cheek, right? I hope you can hear that.
- 21:05But I think you're all quick enough to hear between the
- 21:09lines, what I've been saying, what I've not been saying.
- 21:12I hope it hasn't come across as disrespectful or unserious, that
- 21:17that's not my intention. My hope is that in this message,
- 21:22hearing it in the this different flipped around kind of way has
- 21:26caused you to hear the message from a different perspective.
- 21:30Maybe in a way that's made some things click into place in your
- 21:34mind. But but before I end, let me let
- 21:39me shift these points from the negative to the positive just to
- 21:45make sure there's no confusion this morning, right?
- 21:49I'm not actually telling you to go and live like you're not
- 21:53accountable to anyone. I'm not telling you to go out
- 21:55and joyfully sin right? Don't don't hear that, but if
- 22:01you want to hear God's voice this morning, you need to be
- 22:06walking with him, right? Not just in in the big things of
- 22:10life, but in the small day-to-day, all the time kind of
- 22:15things as well. You need to pursue God for the
- 22:19sake of knowing Him, not just for the things He can do for you
- 22:26or on your behalf. You need to make time to wait on
- 22:32him, to wait for him to speak to, to make time for Him to
- 22:36speak to you, and space for Him to speak about whatever it is He
- 22:40might want to speak to you about that day.
- 22:44Maybe even asking Him that. I don't know what I should be
- 22:50asking. What are the questions you want
- 22:54to answer? You need to live if you want to
- 22:58hear from God, You want to walk in this kind of relationship.
- 23:01You need to live in obedience to Him, right in the way He's
- 23:05designed life to work best, surrendering to His will and His
- 23:09intention for our lives, and doing the things He's already
- 23:14told you to do, right. The things you already know to
- 23:19do. And you need to humble yourself
- 23:23before God, asking him to, to transform and correct even your
- 23:30motives in asking for what you ask for.
- 23:34Because as as James says, God opposes the proud, but he gives
- 23:42favor. He shows favor to the humble
- 23:47friends. God wants to speak to you.
- 23:51He wants you to hear and recognize His voice because He
- 23:54wants to live in a life giving self or life exchanging self
- 24:01giving relationship with you. He doesn't hide himself from us.
- 24:08He doesn't come to us at night in disguise like Saul went to
- 24:14the medium. And or even though God does
- 24:17sometimes come to us in ways we aren't expecting, He has
- 24:21revealed himself to us. He's given himself to us.
- 24:28Now, I'm not saying that God is going to answer every question
- 24:33you ever have. Some things are going to remain
- 24:37a mystery. But I do believe that if you're
- 24:40asking questions about how and why and to whom God speaks, God
- 24:49wants to answer those questions, maybe even this morning.
- 24:56So if you want to not hear God's voice, follow Saul's example.
- 25:05But if you don't want to not hear God's voice, right, that is
- 25:08if you, if you want to hear God speak, turn to him, make room
- 25:17for him, not just in the big I need an answer right now kind of
- 25:22moments, but today and every day.
- 25:27Would you pray with me, God? We are grateful that you are a
- 25:35God who knows us and wants to be known.
- 25:42We thank you, God, that that you want to walk in relationship
- 25:46with us and that there are things you want to do in our
- 25:51lives to change us and transform us, to make us into people who
- 25:58reflect your character and your nature to those around us.
- 26:05We thank you, God, for the invitation to not just suck up
- 26:12our our our strength and our willpower and to try to be like
- 26:16you, but we thank you God, that you want to pour your very life
- 26:22into us and hearing you speaks an important part of that.
- 26:27It's an important part of how you work in our lives.
- 26:33So Jesus, as we close move towards the close of our
- 26:37service, as we worship and thing, would you speak to us?
- 26:47We pray in that.
