- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for Impact.
- 0:22Hello team, welcome to the Impact Ready podcast.
- 0:25Welcome to a new week. So glad you're here.
- 0:28We just did an episode on consistency last week.
- 0:31I think it was the previous episode actually.
- 0:34And this episode will kind of go hand in hand with it because
- 0:37this one is all about showing up.
- 0:40And we've talked about this idea before, the idea of showing up,
- 0:44but there's a lot of nuance in this space.
- 0:47And I want to address it in this podcast episode because I think
- 0:51people can get tripped up on it. This is one of those things
- 0:55where it can seem like there are two opposing forces at play.
- 1:00For example, we're told to have compassion and grace for
- 1:04ourselves, to rest when we need to, to really take time and and
- 1:08recover. But we're also told to be gritty
- 1:11and show up even when things are hard.
- 1:14And that duality really confuses people.
- 1:18The question becomes, OK, great, but when do I have grace and
- 1:22compassion for myself? And when do I just grit my teeth
- 1:25and show up? And I get that, I get it.
- 1:28We're all trying to grow. We're all trying to do the right
- 1:30things here. So which one is it?
- 1:33But like so many things, this is all in a spectrum.
- 1:37This idea of time for grace, compassion, and this idea for
- 1:41gritting your teeth and showing up.
- 1:43First of all, it's not one or the other.
- 1:46You can actually have both. You can have grace and
- 1:49compassion for yourself, and you can grit your teeth and show up.
- 1:54You can make space for resting. But you can also decide that
- 1:58that isn't for now, and that the time now is for showing up.
- 2:04And you have to be tuned into yourself to recognize when those
- 2:08times are. When is the time to actually lay
- 2:10down and rest, either metaphorically or literally?
- 2:14And when is the time to move, to put your clothes on, walk out
- 2:19the door, arrive to show up? The truth is, nobody wakes up
- 2:24feeling great every single day. Nobody wakes up ready to crush
- 2:28it every single day that doesn't happen.
- 2:31It's not real. You would hope that most days
- 2:34you're feeling pretty awesome and ready to go, but it's not
- 2:37going to be every day. You are going to have hard days
- 2:40and you might have days that absolutely suck or even weeks or
- 2:45months that feel that kind of hard.
- 2:47I get that. I have been there as well.
- 2:51And that's OK because it really is never about showing up
- 2:56perfectly every single day. What it's really about is just
- 3:00showing up the best that you can and you do that over and over.
- 3:04That's what consistency is. That's what professionalism is.
- 3:08That's where the grit and the resilience shows up and kicks
- 3:11in. And also not underestimating
- 3:15yourself all the time because you can actually tolerate a lot
- 3:19more than you think you can. When something hard happens, it
- 3:24absolutely can have an effect on us.
- 3:26That's OK. We can be in that space for a
- 3:29bit of time. We can process, we can let those
- 3:32emotions and feelings move through us.
- 3:34But we have to resist the urge to hang out in those dark
- 3:37spaces, to hit rock bottom and want to set up shop there, to
- 3:43live down there. In our despair, we don't want to
- 3:46make that our home. We don't want to put down a
- 3:48throw rug or put the bed sheets on or bring a couch down there.
- 3:52That's not a good place for us to be.
- 3:55And frankly, it can be a little addicting.
- 3:58It can be intoxicating to be in our own darkness.
- 4:00Sometimes it can be hard to get out of that space because it's
- 4:04easy to get in the habit of blaming other things to kids.
- 4:08Easy to get in the habit of disengaging or disassociating or
- 4:13to paint ourselves as a victim of a situation to not really
- 4:17look at what we truly need to own in that situation.
- 4:21And before we go any further, I'm just going to say this out
- 4:23loud. I'm not ragging on anybody who
- 4:26is in that dark space right now and having a hard time showing
- 4:28up. I get it.
- 4:30But there is a distinction, and there is always that tipping
- 4:33point where we have an opportunity to be in choice.
- 4:36How am I going to show up today? The thing that often takes more
- 4:42energy is getting dressed and getting out in the world and
- 4:45investing in our relationships and our work.
- 4:49But it's also the thing that helps us get out of the dark.
- 4:55I'm lucky enough to be married to somebody who operates in this
- 4:58kind of way, who kind of sees things the same way as me.
- 5:02When it comes to this stuff. She has the same sort of mindset
- 5:05and resolve to show up the way that I'm talking about here.
- 5:09We see things in the same way in that regard.
- 5:12And I remember there was one time specifically where I
- 5:14thought to myself, this is the person for me.
- 5:18And it might sound a little strange, but I want to tell this
- 5:20story anyway. Let me pause here for a second.
- 5:25If you're listening and thinking I'm capable of more or this is
- 5:29the level I want to operate at, this is for you.
- 5:33I work privately with a small number of high performing
- 5:36leaders who are ready to elevate how they show up in their
- 5:39business and in their lives. This isn't motivational
- 5:42coaching, it's precision work. We refine your energy,
- 5:45strengthen your ownership, and eliminate inconsistency so your
- 5:49impact becomes undeniable. If you're ready for that level
- 5:53of growth, book a private call through the link in the show
- 5:56notes. We'll see if it's a fit.
- 5:58All right, back to the episode. May 1st, 2018 was a Tuesday.
- 6:08It was also the day that Leanne and I had been to the imaging
- 6:12center that morning where she had had an ultrasound and they
- 6:15had informally diagnosed her with breast cancer.
- 6:20I remember we were sitting in the ultrasound room.
- 6:23It's very dark in those rooms. It's cold.
- 6:26She was sitting on the table, I was sitting in a chair.
- 6:29And we're kind of just like looking at each other, not
- 6:31really saying anything. And the radiologist came in
- 6:34after talking with the tech, and she said that based on what she
- 6:39had seen in those scans, Leanne most certainly had breast cancer
- 6:44and that we were to wait in this room for a call from scheduling
- 6:49so that we could get her biopsy scheduled.
- 6:51And I remember the darkness in that room and the weight of that
- 6:56moment. It really did feel like there
- 6:59was darkness inside of me. It was a day that I don't think
- 7:04either one of us will ever forget.
- 7:06We walked out of that office. I remember the light being so
- 7:10bright. It was a cloudy day and we were
- 7:13having a hard time adjusting to the light.
- 7:15And I remember watching as she called her dad right away to
- 7:19tell him what she'd learned while I waited on the other side
- 7:22of the car. And then we got into the car and
- 7:25we drove home. We were totally shell shocked.
- 7:28I think she was laying on the bed and I was sort of standing
- 7:31in our room. We didn't really know what to
- 7:32do. I think at one point we decided
- 7:34we would go to lunch, which is really weird because we never go
- 7:38to lunch and we went to a Mexican restaurant, which is not
- 7:41something we ever do. It was really strange situation.
- 7:46We had no idea how to navigate this new information that we'd
- 7:50gotten. I don't even think we ate the
- 7:52food that was in front of us. The waiter probably thought we
- 7:55were crazy, but the part of the day that sticks out in my mind
- 7:59just as much as that ultrasound room was the fact that we had a
- 8:02pop up workout, an event scheduled for that evening.
- 8:06We both worked for Burn Cycle in Portland Spin Studio at the
- 8:09time, and we were doing a lot of community pop up events during
- 8:12that season. There's usually about 50 to 75
- 8:16people there and the two of us were going to be front and
- 8:19center leading the workout. Leanne was actually the head
- 8:21trainer for the event. And I remember we were deciding,
- 8:25what do we do? Do we go to this thing or do we
- 8:28call it and we stay home? We had every reason not to go
- 8:32logically, right? I mean, in fact, when we called
- 8:35our team to let them know what was going on and we told them
- 8:38about this informal diagnosis, they offered us 10 different
- 8:42ways to get out of the situation.
- 8:44But Leanne knew what I knew in that moment, which is sometimes
- 8:50it's actually better just to show up.
- 8:53She knew that there was no sense in sitting around the house
- 8:55wallowing. I mean, we'd done that for the
- 8:57past five hours, and it really hadn't made us feel any better.
- 9:01And maybe in the act of showing up, it would be a way to channel
- 9:05that energy and regain some sense of fortitude and strength,
- 9:11maybe alleviate some of the helplessness that we were
- 9:13feeling earlier in that day. And so we did.
- 9:17We showed up to the event. We had let our team know.
- 9:21They rallied for us. They came with so much love and
- 9:25support, and Leanne wrote about this in her book.
- 9:28But I remember it being one of the most powerful events that I
- 9:32was ever a part of teaching in fitness.
- 9:36Our whole team knew about the news, and even though the
- 9:39attendees didn't know, I'm sure that they could feel the energy
- 9:43of all of us showing up together and binding together in this
- 9:47moment of extreme necessity and vulnerability.
- 9:50I remember the energy there that night.
- 9:53It was almost electric. I also remember that we were
- 9:57actually smiling and laughing afterwards and we were taking
- 10:01pictures together. I remember that there was some
- 10:03joy. Despite the heaviness, there was
- 10:06still joy and that shocked the hell out of me.
- 10:10There was still power and there most certainly was strength.
- 10:14And it was that moment where I knew a that I had married the
- 10:18right person, but also BI remembered the power of showing
- 10:23up. And I think that's what I mean
- 10:27by the spectrum of it all. When to have grace and
- 10:31compassion for yourself, when to rest, when to stay home, and
- 10:34when to call on that grit and resilience and really show up
- 10:38literally, figuratively, however you want to call it.
- 10:41For me, more often than not, the answer is show up because I've
- 10:46seen what you had to gain from that.
- 10:48It shocked me then, but it doesn't shock me anymore.
- 10:51I know it. I know the power of showing up.
- 10:55And I'm not saying there won't be days when you need to be
- 10:58alone, when you have to have your own darkness and you have
- 11:01to sort things out in that quiet space for yourself.
- 11:05I've been there too. But I would venture to guess
- 11:07that you're a lot tougher than you think you are.
- 11:11You have a well of strength that is deeper than you have ever
- 11:14really had to know, and it's sitting there waiting for you if
- 11:18you ever need to dip into it. I would venture to guess that
- 11:22the energy you think you'll lose from getting out into the world
- 11:24will actually be energy gained because you put yourself out
- 11:28there and you remind yourself of what you're capable of.
- 11:32Not every day is going to be a good day, not every season is
- 11:35going to go your way. But you always have the ability
- 11:39to choose, and the more consistent you can be with
- 11:43showing up, I think the better you get at discerning when the
- 11:47right time is for you to stay home and rest right now.
- 11:52I think this is the season for it.
- 11:54This is the season for showing up.
- 11:57You are a capable, resilient person who can bounce back up to
- 12:01the surface even when you get pushed down.
- 12:04Let's make showing up the default.
- 12:06Let's make consistency the norm and see what we can do this
- 12:10year. I guarantee it's so much more
- 12:12than you even think you're capable of.
- 12:14So thank you for being here and listening.
