- 0:11Hello friends. Yep, it's shown here as
- 0:15expected. Great to have your company on
- 0:17today, which is the 27th of June.
- 0:21It's Thursday. And today, today with great
- 0:24excitement, we are going to open up our Bibles page ourselves
- 0:31back from James to the last of the four gospels, the Gospel of
- 0:36John. Ohhhhh Yeah, we are going to
- 0:39read through this gospel now. What a treat.
- 0:41This is John's gospel written written quite a while after the
- 0:46other three gospels. The other three are quite
- 0:48similar, called the Synoptic gospels.
- 0:50John is not a blow by blow account of Jesus life.
- 0:55John is a deeply theological reflection on Jesus life.
- 1:00This is written by one who knew Jesus very well a decades later
- 1:05as he reflected on his life of teaching and living in the
- 1:10spirit of Jesus, his life as he reflected on his years with
- 1:16Jesus and subsequent reflection on what those years meant and
- 1:20what it is that Jesus was actually on about.
- 1:23So in this book we get this reflection from someone who is
- 1:27there, someone who knew what was going on, someone who understood
- 1:30Jesus, who really kind of rounds out and fills out the words of
- 1:35Jesus, the intentions of Jesus. And he constructs these long
- 1:39stories and narratives filled with symbolism and meanings so
- 1:44that we really get such a profound sense of who Jesus is
- 1:49and what Jesus was on about during his life in his ministry.
- 1:53And we can take it at face value all week and dive deep into any
- 1:58one of the sentences contained in this book.
- 2:01It is a treasure trove that we are going to Jewel by Ruby by
- 2:06Emerald, unpack and enjoy together over the next few
- 2:10weeks. How epic is that?
- 2:14So friends, we are going to read it starting at the beginning,
- 2:17working all the way through. And the beginning is just very
- 2:21beginning, ish. It's like we've gone all the way
- 2:23back to Genesis and the way that John chooses to start to give us
- 2:28no misconceptions that indeed this Jesus who he'll be writing
- 2:32about is indeed one and the same as God himself.
- 2:37What a treat. Let us read together John
- 2:41chapter one. In the beginning, the Word
- 2:55already existed. The Word was with God, and the
- 2:59Word was God. He existed in the beginning with
- 3:03God. God created everything through
- 3:06Him and nothing was created except through Him.
- 3:10The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life
- 3:16brought light to everyone. The light shines in the
- 3:20darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
- 3:25God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light
- 3:29so that everyone might believe Because of his testimony, John
- 3:33himself was not the light. He was simply a witness to tell
- 3:37about the Light, the one who is the true Light, who gives light
- 3:42to everyone who's coming into the world.
- 3:47He came into the very world he created, but the world didn't
- 3:51recognise him. He came to his own people and
- 3:54even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and
- 3:58accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
- 4:04They are reborn not with the physical birth resulting from
- 4:08human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
- 4:13So the Word became human and made his home among us.
- 4:18He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness, and we have
- 4:23seen His glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son.
- 4:29John testified about Him when he shouted to the crowds.
- 4:33This is the one I was talking about when I said someone is
- 4:37coming after me who is far greater than I am, for He
- 4:40existed long before me. From His abundance we have all
- 4:46received one gracious blessing after another.
- 4:50For the law was given through Moses, but God's unfailing love
- 4:55and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.
- 4:59No one has ever seen God, but the unique One who is Himself.
- 5:04God is near to the Father's heart.
- 5:08He has revealed God to us. This was John's testimony.
- 5:13When the Jewish leaders sent priests and temple assistants
- 5:16from Jerusalem to ask John, who are you?
- 5:20He came right out and said, I am not the Messiah.
- 5:24Well, then, who are you? They asked.
- 5:27Are you Elijah? No, he replied.
- 5:31Are you the prophet we are expecting?
- 5:33No. Then who are you?
- 5:37We need an answer for those who sent us.
- 5:40What do you have to say about yourself?
- 5:43John replied In the words of the prophet Isaiah.
- 5:46I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, clear the way for
- 5:51the Lord's coming. Then the Pharisees who had been
- 5:55sent asked him, If you aren't the Messiah or Elijah or the
- 6:00prophet, what right do you have to baptise?
- 6:04John told them I baptised with water, but right here in the
- 6:09crowd as someone you do not recognise, though his ministry
- 6:14follows mine. I'm not even worthy to be his
- 6:17slave and untie the straps of his sandal.
- 6:21This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the
- 6:25Jordan River where John was baptising.
- 6:29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
- 6:34Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
- 6:39He is the one I was talking about when I said a man is
- 6:42coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he
- 6:46existed long before me. I did not recognise him as the
- 6:50Messiah, but I have been baptising with water so that he
- 6:55might be revealed to Israel. Then John testified, I saw the
- 7:02Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting
- 7:06upon him. I didn't know he was the one,
- 7:10but when God sent me to baptise with water, he told me the one
- 7:14on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who
- 7:19will baptise with the Holy Spirit.
- 7:22I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that He is the chosen
- 7:27one of God. The following day, John was
- 7:32again sitting with two of his disciples.
- 7:35As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, look, there
- 7:40is the Lamb of God. When John's two disciples heard
- 7:43this, they followed Jesus. Jesus looked around and saw them
- 7:49following. What do you want?
- 7:52He asked them. They replied Rabbi, which means
- 7:56teacher. Where are you staying?
- 7:59Come and see. He said it was about 4:00 in the
- 8:04afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was
- 8:06staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.
- 8:10Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of these men who heard
- 8:14what John said and then followed Jesus.
- 8:18Andrew went to find his brother Simon and told him we have found
- 8:21the Messiah, which means Christ. Then Andrew brought Simon to
- 8:27meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus
- 8:32said Your name is Simon, son of John, but you will be called
- 8:38Cephus, which means Peter. The next day Jesus decided to go
- 8:45to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him,
- 8:49Come follow me. Philip was from Beth Sader,
- 8:53Andrew and Peter's hometown. Philip went to look for
- 8:57Nathaniel and told him we have found the very person Moses and
- 9:02the prophets wrote about. His name is Jesus, the son of
- 9:06Joseph from Nazareth. Nazareth exclaimed Nathaniel.
- 9:10Can anything good come from Nazareth?
- 9:14Come and see for yourself, Philip replied as they
- 9:18approached. Jesus said.
- 9:20Now here is a genuine son of Israel, a man of complete
- 9:25integrity. How do you know about me?
- 9:28Nathaniel asked. Jesus replied.
- 9:32I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you
- 9:36then, Nathaniel exclaimed. Rabbi, you are the Son of God,
- 9:41the King of Israel, Jesus asked him.
- 9:45Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under
- 9:49the fig tree? You will see greater things than
- 9:52this then, he said. I tell you the truth, you will
- 9:58all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down
- 10:03on the Son of Man, the one who was the stairway between heaven
- 10:08and earth chases.
- 10:21You are just so wonderful. It is such a joy for us to be
- 10:26able to read these words and to hear about your disciple
- 10:30reflecting on you and who you are, our Lord.
- 10:35So often it it feels confusing with all that there is to
- 10:41process about a life of faith in you.
- 10:44And then we read these words, the very first opportunity that
- 10:49John has to describe you. Lord, you are full of unfailing
- 10:55love and faithfulness. Lord, let it be your love that
- 11:05lands with us. Open our hearts so that we can
- 11:10experience your love and know that no matter who we are, no
- 11:16matter what we bring to the table, no matter what we've
- 11:19done, no matter what the posture of our heart, you have an
- 11:24unfailing love for us. Unfailing, And you are faithful
- 11:34that the God of the universe would humble himself, that you
- 11:38would become flesh and blood. This man's dwelling among us to
- 11:43show us this unfailing love and faithfulness.
- 11:46Well, that is just too much for us to comprehend, but we thank
- 11:51you. I'm we love you and we are so
- 11:55grateful for your love for us. We just settle in that love and
- 12:00I pray that it would soak all the way through us, transforming
- 12:05us so that we, without a shadow of a doubt, know that we are
- 12:09loved, loved children of the Almighty God.
- 12:15Thank you Jesus for your love, unfailing and never ending.
- 12:22I mean.
