Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: This mediated podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only
- 0:12Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spening
- 0:15Speaker 1: new Art, and today we're joined by special guest Bill
- 0:18Speaker 1: vander Hayden. In addition to Bill, we also have Steven Ronnella,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Brodie Henderson, Janice Ptelis Karn Schneider, chest Your Floyd, and
- 0:26Speaker 1: Maggie Hudlow. Now, Bill, this is your first time playing
- 0:29Speaker 1: Meat Eater Trivia. How do you normally feel about trivia?
- 0:32Speaker 1: You like it. I don't spend a lot of time learning,
- 0:35Speaker 1: you know, random information, but I do spend a lot
- 0:39Speaker 1: of time hunting, fishing in the outdoor, so I might
- 0:41Speaker 1: get I might get one or two right here that
- 0:43Speaker 1: will help you. Do you do you feel like you
- 0:44Speaker 1: have some random information though in this space hunting, fishing, conservation, cooking.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I have some. I have a little bit. Yeah, I
- 0:52Speaker 1: think there's some some hope you'll do. Okay, Steve promised
- 0:55Speaker 1: him that you would throw him was always going to
- 0:57Speaker 1: bring up I just told him how you probably throw
- 0:59Speaker 1: him a bone. You gotta own planned out. We do.
- 1:01Speaker 1: We do have one of those. I'm confident you'll at
- 1:04Speaker 1: least get one of ten. Then bill. Now, if you're
- 1:06Speaker 1: not familiar, this is a ten round quiz show with
- 1:09Speaker 1: questions from meat eaters four verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 1:13Speaker 1: and cooking, and there is a prize. Meat Eater will
- 1:15Speaker 1: donate five hundred dollars to the conservation organization of the
- 1:19Speaker 1: winners choosing. And each week here on Meat Eater Trivia,
- 1:22Speaker 1: we reveal a new stat and for the stat of
- 1:25Speaker 1: the week, we're looking at player complaints. Do you guys
- 1:33Speaker 1: have any predictions about what we might learn here? I
- 1:37Speaker 1: think that can go on, said now, Steve destroys the
- 1:40Speaker 1: field with an average of six point four seven complaints
- 1:44Speaker 1: per episode. That's followed by Sean Weaver at three point
- 1:48Speaker 1: to one complaints per episode, Ryan Callahan at three point
- 1:52Speaker 1: zero one complaints per episode, and Brodie Henderson at two
- 1:55Speaker 1: point five one complaints per episodes. I was expecting to
- 1:59Speaker 1: be right up there, Steve, thoughts, and I think I
- 2:01Speaker 1: just jumped on his bandwagon a lot. You got some
- 2:03Speaker 1: work to do that. Steve's most dominating stretch came early
- 2:07Speaker 1: February to late April, when he averaged nine point eight
- 2:12Speaker 1: three complaints per episode. That stretches from episode three one
- 2:16Speaker 1: three to three, almost more than the amount of questions
- 2:19Speaker 1: that there are. That's right, But Steve has mellowed out
- 2:22Speaker 1: a bit, and over the last four episodes he's only
- 2:25Speaker 1: averaging four point seven five complaints per episode. You know
- 2:28Speaker 1: why the writings on the wall, dude, looking at the
- 2:31Speaker 1: analytics the show more people listen when I'm not here.
- 2:36Speaker 1: That that is something that is something that we did learn.
- 2:42Speaker 1: You know, people ask me if it's a bit uh
- 2:45Speaker 1: that that Steve gets on about trivia. It's not. Because
- 2:49Speaker 1: when we had the question about the lightning strike victims
- 2:52Speaker 1: a couple episodes ago, Steve called me twice that day.
- 2:55Speaker 1: One time it was five hours later. That had been
- 2:58Speaker 1: on his mind for five hours think it about the
- 3:00Speaker 1: lightning strike question, and he still wasn't convinced that we
- 3:06Speaker 1: have some housekeeping to get to as well. In a
- 3:08Speaker 1: previous game of trivia, we talked about how the World
- 3:11Speaker 1: Champions Squirrel cook Off is held annually in Arkansas. But
- 3:15Speaker 1: then the cookoff organizers reached out and said that they
- 3:18Speaker 1: were moving to Tennessee in two because because quote, it
- 3:22Speaker 1: would suck if the Super Bowl was held in Cleveland
- 3:24Speaker 1: for forty straight years. Well, in a shocking turn of events,
- 3:28Speaker 1: The World Champions Squirrel cook Off has announced that the
- 3:31Speaker 1: two gathering in Tennessee has been canceled. Now I asked why,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and the event organizers said that the venue pulled the
- 3:39Speaker 1: plug on them because of quote woke anti squirrel people.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So the World Champions Squirrel cook Off is now moving
- 3:49Speaker 1: back to Arkansas in and plans on staying there for good.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I don't get the their woke anti squirrels or woke
- 3:57Speaker 1: and anti squirrel people, which would actually probably be pro
- 4:01Speaker 1: squirrel people if they were against a squirrel cook off,
- 4:04Speaker 1: but that that was what they said. The issue was
- 4:07Speaker 1: was that the venue in Tennessee did not support what
- 4:09Speaker 1: they were doing, of all Tennessee, of all players with Tennessee,
- 4:16Speaker 1: but not Tennessee. So the World Champions Squirrel Cookoff people
- 4:20Speaker 1: said they learned their lesson, and I think they said
- 4:22Speaker 1: something about their staying in God's country for good and
- 4:24Speaker 1: the Arkansas Game and Fish Department is going to be
- 4:27Speaker 1: a partner with them, and and that is now permanently
- 4:31Speaker 1: their home. Dude, we could find them venues all day long,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I think, so were no listen if I win, I'm
- 4:37Speaker 1: gonna today, I'm gonna don't give my money my winnings
- 4:41Speaker 1: to Tennessee Wildlife Federation is one of the country's oldest,
- 4:45Speaker 1: uh you know, conservation organizations. They've done a ton of
- 4:48Speaker 1: good and I bet with that five hundred dollars they
- 4:51Speaker 1: could find a venue for the Squirrel cook Off, maybe
- 4:54Speaker 1: four and so that it doesn't have to always stay
- 4:57Speaker 1: in Cleveland, so to speak. There you go, m hm
- 5:01Speaker 1: hm and hey, I have a request though, what's up? Um?
- 5:05Speaker 1: I always want to I think feel like you're not
- 5:07Speaker 1: always giving us the Shelby score before every game. Yeah this,
- 5:11Speaker 1: You know, sometime we'll introduce like a Shelby index for
- 5:15Speaker 1: every game, but this one it was three. Say this
- 5:17Speaker 1: shape enough to be a tough round, then that means
- 5:19Speaker 1: our winners should be in the ballpark of six, explained
- 5:22Speaker 1: the Shelby score, the Shelby index. Shelby is my wife,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and each night before I come to Meat Eater Trivia,
- 5:29Speaker 1: I have her play to see how she does, and
- 5:31Speaker 1: it's sort of gives me a baseline of what the
- 5:33Speaker 1: winner might do. Normally, she scores about half as well
- 5:36Speaker 1: as the winner of meat Eater Trivia, and last night
- 5:39Speaker 1: she got three, which means this is a tougher round,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and with that we are onto Meeta the trivia play
- 5:45Speaker 1: the drop. I need to know what I stay in
- 5:54Speaker 1: the wind to everything? How's that just tend to win everything?
- 6:08Speaker 1: Question one, As always, this will be multiple choice. The
- 6:11Speaker 1: topic is fishing. What mammal has the most lakes named
- 6:16Speaker 1: after it in America? Is it beaver, wolf, deer, or bear?
- 6:25Speaker 1: What mammal has the most lakes named after it in America?
- 6:30Speaker 1: Is it beaver, wolf, deer, or bear? That's probably best
- 6:35Speaker 1: question yet, thank you. Steve is not gonna go in
- 6:38Speaker 1: the opposite You're actually we'll start keeping all day and
- 6:43Speaker 1: go like right on, right on again. Your choices are beaver, wolf, deer,
- 6:49Speaker 1: or bear. Yeah, how are you feeling confident? No, neither
- 6:54Speaker 1: of mine. No those. I think it's about a fifty
- 6:58Speaker 1: fifty or atty easy to knock out. And then it's
- 7:02Speaker 1: at Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal
- 7:07Speaker 1: your answers. We have Steve saying bear, Bill saying beaver,
- 7:11Speaker 1: Maggie saying wolf, chest you're saying dear, Brodie saying beaver,
- 7:16Speaker 1: Karin saying beaver, and Janice saying bear. The correct answer
- 7:20Speaker 1: is bear on your neck and neck. This is according
- 7:26Speaker 1: to the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography,
- 7:31Speaker 1: there are four hundred thirty eight bear lakes in America.
- 7:34Speaker 1: That's followed by three hundred seven beaver lakes, two hundred
- 7:37Speaker 1: twenty four deer lakes, and one hundred forty one wolf lakes.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Good Quarry, happy with how that whole thing went, wrote
- 7:45Speaker 1: a question to the topic is gear. The most widely
- 7:50Speaker 1: available broadhead weights at bass pro are one hundred grain,
- 7:54Speaker 1: one five grain, and blank. So I'm looking for third place.
- 8:00Speaker 1: The most widely available broadhead weights at bass pro are
- 8:05Speaker 1: one hundred grain, on grain and blank. Bill. If you
- 8:10Speaker 1: wonder about when that bone was coming, I think the
- 8:14Speaker 1: bonus is uh the question to you? Think this is it?
- 8:20Speaker 1: You think you know this one? Bill? I know I'm
- 8:23Speaker 1: based on our sales. How about the rest? But I
- 8:27Speaker 1: know kind of what's most popular, that kind of that
- 8:32Speaker 1: that could inform your your answer. But I'm now does
- 8:37Speaker 1: everybody have an answer? I just went first thing pop
- 8:39Speaker 1: to my head. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 8:42Speaker 1: have Steve saying eight five, Kill saying one fifty, Maggie
- 8:47Speaker 1: saying one thirty chest. You're saying one seventy five, Brody
- 8:50Speaker 1: saying one fifty, Karin saying two hundred, and Janice saying five.
- 8:56Speaker 1: We do have a correct answer in the room. It's
- 8:58Speaker 1: eighty five grains. Even any these guys are because it's
- 9:04Speaker 1: because the cross boards. Is it the crossboats? I think
- 9:07Speaker 1: I think it's women and children that are probably shooting.
- 9:12Speaker 1: So I should have got that right right, But that
- 9:14Speaker 1: was your That was But I've seen more and more
- 9:17Speaker 1: of a trend away from the eighty five and more
- 9:19Speaker 1: one fifties. So that's why I want And what kind
- 9:23Speaker 1: of shooter do you find? He's normally shooting like a
- 9:25Speaker 1: one in eighty five grain broadhead. Um, somebody's going for light,
- 9:31Speaker 1: light fast. A lot of the a lot of white
- 9:33Speaker 1: sail guys, a lot of guys that are set up
- 9:35Speaker 1: more for target three D shooting are trying to go
- 9:37Speaker 1: light fast and then they just want to use the
- 9:39Speaker 1: same head there. So that's what I see. I thought
- 9:42Speaker 1: the trend was more away from that, even though I
- 9:45Speaker 1: didn't want to admit that. Maybe still is the truth.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Those aren't mutually exclusive. There could be the trend away
- 9:50Speaker 1: from that, but it could still be number three best
- 9:52Speaker 1: pro sells nine broadheads that way one hundred grains. That's
- 9:56Speaker 1: followed by thirty broadheads that weigh one d twenty five grains,
- 10:00Speaker 1: eight broadheads that way eighty five grains, and three broadheads
- 10:03Speaker 1: that way one fifty grains. Mm hmm. Round the question three.
- 10:09Speaker 1: The topic is cooking. This next great question comes to
- 10:13Speaker 1: Adam more Man. If you have a question you think
- 10:16Speaker 1: is right for Meat Eater Trivia, you can send it
- 10:18Speaker 1: to trivia at the meat eater dot com. If you
- 10:22Speaker 1: order fried couter from a restaurant, what kind of animal
- 10:26Speaker 1: are you eating? If you order fried couter c O
- 10:33Speaker 1: O T e R from a restaurant, what kind of
- 10:36Speaker 1: animal are you eating? Nobody knew this one right off
- 10:41Speaker 1: the bat. It seems like wherever Adam more hails from,
- 10:47Speaker 1: we don't have anyone in this room that grew up there.
- 10:51Speaker 1: M hmm. Again, fried couter, what kind of animal are
- 10:57Speaker 1: you eating? Can you give us a hand where he's from?
- 11:00Speaker 1: Not giving you any hints? Does everybody look at that?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Did you know that bottle? I just noticed that we
- 11:10Speaker 1: sell a water bottle that is the bar water bottle
- 11:13Speaker 1: um that I gave these stats to our designer, Hunter
- 11:16Speaker 1: Spencer and one of them is there are fourty eight
- 11:19Speaker 1: bear lakes in the US, but it doesn't say it
- 11:23Speaker 1: doesn't say how many other kind of lakes there are. Well,
- 11:26Speaker 1: then it follows that up by saying it's the most
- 11:28Speaker 1: popular lake name among mammals. It just supports the whole
- 11:32Speaker 1: Kimi Werner again, Fried coonter. Does everybody have an answer? Brody?
- 11:41Speaker 1: Over two? Potentially starting off over three. Every once in
- 11:46Speaker 1: a while you have bad day, Spencer, Does everybody have
- 11:50Speaker 1: an answer? Now? Brody, let's go go ahead and reveal
- 11:54Speaker 1: your answers. We have Steve still writing saying soft shell crab.
- 12:00Speaker 1: That what it says, soft shell crab, Bill saying pig,
- 12:03Speaker 1: Maggie saying quail chess, you're saying raccoon, Brodie saying rabbit.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Krin saying gator, Janie saying gator. Nobody got it right.
- 12:11Speaker 1: The correct answer is soft shell turtle or turtle. I
- 12:16Speaker 1: had a t written down and scratched it. Yeah, if crab.
- 12:20Speaker 1: It's common in the South to refer to soft shell
- 12:23Speaker 1: turtles as cootters, specifically when they're being turned into soup
- 12:27Speaker 1: or deep fried nuggets. This can get confusing, though, because
- 12:30Speaker 1: there's actually a different species of turtle called the river cooter,
- 12:33Speaker 1: which looks similar to a painted turtle. Do you know
- 12:37Speaker 1: that Johnny Paycheck shot a man in the head and
- 12:42Speaker 1: the argument over turtle soup? No creased his missed kind
- 12:47Speaker 1: of missed and just creased his forehead? What what do
- 12:50Speaker 1: you think the argument was about? There? You can watch
- 12:52Speaker 1: the documentary Wyre. They interviewed both the lawyers who defended
- 12:55Speaker 1: each side of it. Wow. Yeah, it's hilarious. It's it's
- 12:59Speaker 1: like the weird they got. They were traded hats and
- 13:02Speaker 1: then one guy wind up trade back and it escalated
- 13:04Speaker 1: into an argument of over going to someone's house for
- 13:07Speaker 1: turtle soup, and Johnny Paycheck shot him, increased his forehead man,
- 13:12Speaker 1: and then vanished into the night. Have you ever eaten
- 13:15Speaker 1: soft shell turtle? I got a softshell turtle story. They'll
- 13:19Speaker 1: curl your Hair's here so me and Eddie lou Loss
- 13:23Speaker 1: I think it was Eddie. We're camping at a place
- 13:26Speaker 1: called Cisco Bayou on the White River, and we were
- 13:28Speaker 1: eating deer steaks and throwing the trim from the deer
- 13:32Speaker 1: steaks out into the bayou. Okay, you follow me. The
- 13:37Speaker 1: next day we catch a soft shell in our turtle trap.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Butcher it and I'll give you one guest to guess
- 13:43Speaker 1: what was in its stomach. A deer steak. That's great.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Those things are aggressive. Why is that supposed to curl
- 13:51Speaker 1: his here? You know how down there, Bud. Question for
- 14:00Speaker 1: the topic is public land? Mount Rushmore is surrounded by
- 14:05Speaker 1: what one point two million acre national forest? Oh? Mount
- 14:13Speaker 1: Rushmore is surrounded by what one point two million acre
- 14:18Speaker 1: national forest. We had a few folks in the room
- 14:22Speaker 1: who knew it, but for the most part, I'm just
- 14:26Speaker 1: gonna be seeing some guesses again looking for what national
- 14:30Speaker 1: forest surrounds Mount Rushmore. I gotta ask about that. I can't.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I don't want to give away too much, But does
- 14:46Speaker 1: everybody have an answer? That's just trivia. No one has
- 14:51Speaker 1: ever had that thought playing trivia. That's just trivia. Go
- 14:54Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying black Hills,
- 14:57Speaker 1: Bill saying Custer, Maggie saying ad Lands, Chester, you're saying
- 15:01Speaker 1: black Hills, Brody saying black Hills, Karin without an answer,
- 15:05Speaker 1: in Janice saying Custer. The correct answer is the Black
- 15:09Speaker 1: Hills National Forest. I feel like I might just pull
- 15:12Speaker 1: into the lead the Mount Rushmore projects started in nineteen
- 15:18Speaker 1: seven and finish in nineteen one. The man who came
- 15:21Speaker 1: up with the idea suggested the mountains should be dedicated
- 15:23Speaker 1: to heroes of the American West like Lewis and Clark,
- 15:27Speaker 1: Chicago Weea, Red Cloud, Buffalo, Bill Cody, and Crazy Horse.
- 15:31Speaker 1: But as we now know, the hill was turned into Washington, Jefferson,
- 15:35Speaker 1: Roosevelt and Lincoln. Have you been to the Crazy Horse monument? Yes,
- 15:40Speaker 1: very underwhelming. Well, they're still working on it. They've been
- 15:44Speaker 1: working on it for my whole life and they'll be
- 15:45Speaker 1: working on it for your children's whole life probably, So yeah,
- 15:49Speaker 1: I don't think it's underwhelming. It's like it's like it's
- 15:52Speaker 1: just like you're watching like a thing that will take
- 15:55Speaker 1: and some people. I'm into it. I'm just not confident
- 15:59Speaker 1: playing about Spencer. That wasn't a show. I'm into it.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I'm just not confident, like you said that, even my
- 16:06Speaker 1: children will see the end of Crazy Horse. Question five.
- 16:09Speaker 1: We'll get a scoreboard update from Phil after this. The
- 16:13Speaker 1: topic is hunting. This next great question comes to us
- 16:16Speaker 1: via Ali Spangler. If you have a question you think
- 16:18Speaker 1: is right for Meat Eater Trivia, you can send it
- 16:20Speaker 1: to trivia at the meat eater dot com. Male turkeys
- 16:24Speaker 1: are said to have droppings that are in what shape?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Male turkeys are said to have droppings that are in
- 16:34Speaker 1: what shape? These aren't the kind of questions that can
- 16:39Speaker 1: change a game, Spencer. I feel like this one's pretty easy.
- 16:44Speaker 1: You're gonna have some of those in there, Brodie, Did
- 16:46Speaker 1: you know Black Hills National Forest? Or is that just
- 16:49Speaker 1: a good guess? Steve? It seems like you knew that
- 16:51Speaker 1: one right away. Isn't Custer right there? There's Custer um
- 16:55Speaker 1: Custer State Park is nearby, but it's not a national forest. Yeah,
- 16:59Speaker 1: but I feel like there's now Custer National Forest extends
- 17:03Speaker 1: into South Dakota are national forests. I don't know that
- 17:12Speaker 1: there is a customer. It's not Custer. That is not
- 17:16Speaker 1: the one that surrounds You're staying a Custer State Park
- 17:19Speaker 1: or something like that South Dakota Custer Stark right, Because
- 17:23Speaker 1: even though I'm not complaining anymore, there might be a
- 17:26Speaker 1: real problem again. Mail turkeys are said they have droppings
- 17:29Speaker 1: that are in what shape? Does everybody have an answer?
- 17:32Speaker 1: I see where it's going, and I had a problem
- 17:35Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying Jay,
- 17:38Speaker 1: Bill saying El, Maggie saying Chestern Brody saying Jay, Krin
- 17:45Speaker 1: saying what does that say, and saying Jay. The correct
- 17:51Speaker 1: answer is jay or hook shaped. I feel you're making
- 17:55Speaker 1: an argument for L. You know, if he's a little
- 17:58Speaker 1: loose stool, that doesn't that Jake was never my life.
- 18:02Speaker 1: As someone said, it's an L shaped poop. Yeah, it's
- 18:05Speaker 1: a hard write angle at the butt. I was just
- 18:07Speaker 1: gonna say, I have like a little little curl. I
- 18:11Speaker 1: thought you were not going to give it to all
- 18:13Speaker 1: the people that wrote a capital J. Why do you
- 18:16Speaker 1: think it's a lowercase J. There's not a line across
- 18:20Speaker 1: the top of the poop and jive, but I don't
- 18:27Speaker 1: want to overdo it. While male turkey droppings are J shaped,
- 18:30Speaker 1: female turkey droppings look more like a spiral blob or
- 18:34Speaker 1: snail shell. This is because female turkey droppings exit the
- 18:38Speaker 1: large and testine into the cloaca, which gives them a
- 18:41Speaker 1: long run way to curl and clump. Male turkeys, on
- 18:44Speaker 1: the other hand, have a fallus in their cloaca near
- 18:47Speaker 1: the end of the digestive tract, which means there's less
- 18:50Speaker 1: room for their waste to coil. I got a feeling
- 18:53Speaker 1: if you if you had something similar with human feces,
- 18:58Speaker 1: that you could you could I d him by gender,
- 19:01Speaker 1: that you would find that when you found surface shitters,
- 19:05Speaker 1: they would all be mail. Oh yeah, just a feeling.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Probably right. I'm not gonna investigate really interesting if you
- 19:14Speaker 1: could be like, oh, lady did that or a man?
- 19:18Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Don't surface ship guys. Are
- 19:21Speaker 1: halfway through the game of trivia, give us a scoreboard update.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Sure thing. We have three players who I guess I
- 19:28Speaker 1: will say are playing trivia with a delicate touch, and
- 19:30Speaker 1: by that I mean they have zero points, Bill, Karen
- 19:33Speaker 1: and Maggie. And then next up we have Brodi and
- 19:37Speaker 1: Chester tied up with two points. Janice has three points,
- 19:41Speaker 1: and Stephen Ronilla has four points. Ever done. Question six.
- 19:57Speaker 1: The topic is cooking. This southern state is famous for
- 20:01Speaker 1: their white barbecue sauce, which is made with Mayo apple cider, vinegar, sugar, salt,
- 20:07Speaker 1: and black pepper. What is it? I cannot think it's
- 20:12Speaker 1: probably like a again. This southern state is famous for
- 20:19Speaker 1: their white barbecue sauce, which is made with Mayo, apple cider, vinegar, sugar,
- 20:25Speaker 1: salt and black pepper. What is the state goodbecue? Put
- 20:35Speaker 1: that on a little bit of fried chicken, man, given
- 20:39Speaker 1: some I like mine on a smoked turkey sandwich. Does
- 20:44Speaker 1: everybody have an answer looking for the state that's famous
- 20:47Speaker 1: for their white barbecue sauce? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 20:53Speaker 1: We have Steve saying Alabama, Bill saying Alabama, Maggie saying Alabama.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Alabama sang North Carolina, Karant sang Alabama, and Yana sang Alabama,
- 21:15Speaker 1: and have like a real bad streak that covered ship
- 21:18Speaker 1: and people get behind me again. But that's where Brody's at. Listen,
- 21:22Speaker 1: I'm glad before the tournament. Yea. The Alabama white sauce
- 21:28Speaker 1: is typically served on pork or chicken, but it's also
- 21:31Speaker 1: a great condiment for upland birds in small game. If
- 21:34Speaker 1: you want to learn how to make it, then go
- 21:35Speaker 1: to the meat eater dot com and read Lucas leaves
- 21:38Speaker 1: article called how to make Alabama white sauce. Comeback sauce
- 21:42Speaker 1: is another name for it, and I think I never
- 21:44Speaker 1: heard that one. I like it though, I like all
- 21:47Speaker 1: of our recipe cook Chef contributors, but I just feel
- 21:53Speaker 1: like every time I look at one of Lucas lee
- 21:56Speaker 1: leaves stuff. I'm like, God, Lee, that looks sounds so well.
- 22:00Speaker 1: He he really appeals to our sensibilities. Being from South
- 22:04Speaker 1: Dakota and Michigan. He knows how to cook being a Minnesotan.
- 22:09Speaker 1: You know what's funny is uh, we have an article
- 22:12Speaker 1: about the mcgriddle thing. Um, my body, he did, my
- 22:18Speaker 1: body is friends with the guy that makes the mcgriddles,
- 22:21Speaker 1: and he called my body super excited about that. Now,
- 22:24Speaker 1: what does that mean? He makes like he works at
- 22:25Speaker 1: a McDonald's or he's like a shadow. Apparently he's like
- 22:29Speaker 1: the mcgriddle supplier guy. And he was impressed. He really
- 22:33Speaker 1: was happy. So he called my body to express his happiness.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Then my buddy called me to pass along the happiness
- 22:40Speaker 1: that Steve is referring to a Venison mcgriddle recipe. We
- 22:43Speaker 1: have on the meat eater dot Com Question seven. The
- 22:47Speaker 1: topic is biology. This is our listener question of the Week,
- 22:50Speaker 1: which was won by Chris dro Stay for sending this
- 22:53Speaker 1: great question. Chris is going to get a signed copy
- 22:56Speaker 1: of the Meat Eater Guide to Wilderness Skills and Survival
- 23:00Speaker 1: if you want a chance to win the Listener Question
- 23:01Speaker 1: of the week, then send your questions to trivia at
- 23:04Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com. A brewer's duck is a
- 23:08Speaker 1: hybrid between a god wall and a blank, A brewer's
- 23:15Speaker 1: duck and brewer is a proper now, and a brewer's
- 23:18Speaker 1: duck is a hybrid between a goad wall and a blank.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I think Steve is pacing the room to destroy the
- 23:26Speaker 1: Shelby index of six. Yeah, I'm not cocky, I'm not discouraged.
- 23:36Speaker 1: You know this one, Okay, I have a hunch again.
- 23:39Speaker 1: A brewer's duck is a hybrid between a goad wall
- 23:42Speaker 1: and a blank. I could walk you through how I
- 23:44Speaker 1: got there, but I'd be I'd be given too much information. Chester,
- 23:47Speaker 1: I saw something racing. Are you ready, Karin, I'm ready. Okay,
- 23:55Speaker 1: you could just pick a duck and write that down.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Come on, Karan, you know one duck. You know. It's
- 24:05Speaker 1: like your heart's not in the game. I just can't.
- 24:09Speaker 1: It's like, Okay, that's Yanna saying. He's not mad at you,
- 24:12Speaker 1: it's just disappointed. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 24:16Speaker 1: have Steve saying a Mallard, Bill saying a Mallard. Maggie
- 24:19Speaker 1: sang a mallard, Chester saying a wig, and Brodie sang
- 24:21Speaker 1: a Mallard, Krin Sangwigion, and Janice saying a mallard. The
- 24:26Speaker 1: correct answer is Mallard. The duck was named by John
- 24:31Speaker 1: James Audubon in eighty two after he collected and painted
- 24:36Speaker 1: one in Louisiana. Brewers ducks are noticeably different from Mallards
- 24:40Speaker 1: and gadwalls, but not in a consistent way. Their head color,
- 24:44Speaker 1: chess color, wing color, and scaly pattern express a lot
- 24:47Speaker 1: of variability. Question eight. We'll get a scoreboard update from
- 24:53Speaker 1: Phil after this. The topic is woodsmanship. Who is the
- 24:58Speaker 1: author of outdoor books? Like should the tent be burning
- 25:01Speaker 1: like that? If you didn't bring jerky? What did I
- 25:04Speaker 1: just eat? You're not lost if you can still see
- 25:07Speaker 1: the truck and it's only slow food until you try
- 25:10Speaker 1: to eat it. It seems like Stephen Brody knew it,
- 25:15Speaker 1: be honest, knew it. The rest of the room is
- 25:18Speaker 1: not quick with an answer, again looking for the author
- 25:21Speaker 1: of outdoor books like should the tent be burning like that?
- 25:25Speaker 1: If you didn't bring jerky? What did I just eat?
- 25:27Speaker 1: You're not lost if you can still see the truck
- 25:30Speaker 1: and it's only slow food until you try to eat it.
- 25:39Speaker 1: You're honest, you know this one? I think so. There's
- 25:42Speaker 1: a in the forty mile Hunter office in tok Alaska.
- 25:48Speaker 1: I'm looking around the room. I know he's been there.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I don't know if Bill has been there, but one
- 25:54Speaker 1: of his pieces is on that door in the bathroom.
- 25:57Speaker 1: It's a nice short read when you sit down and
- 25:59Speaker 1: it's if you don't come out of their laugh and
- 26:02Speaker 1: then something's wrong with you. I like it. M hm.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Who's gonna come up with one?
- 26:08Speaker 1: I want to. I wanted on the bottom right, But
- 26:10Speaker 1: I think wrote I think, I think I know if
- 26:14Speaker 1: you got it wrong, I think I know what your answer. Answer?
- 26:19Speaker 1: All right, go ahead, reveal your answers. We have Steve
- 26:24Speaker 1: saying Bill Heavie, and he wrote Patrick McManus under that,
- 26:29Speaker 1: Bill saying Smith Maggie without an answer, Chastis without an answer,
- 26:33Speaker 1: Bill saying Bill Heeve Korean without an answer, and Janas
- 26:36Speaker 1: saying Patrick McManus. The correct answer is Bill heave You're
- 26:44Speaker 1: like humorist outdoor writers, but it's not McManus. Man. I
- 26:49Speaker 1: didn't know any of the titles except for the last one.
- 26:51Speaker 1: It's not. It's not Bill. He's a good humorous man.
- 26:55Speaker 1: He's funny as ship great. Bill has described himself as
- 26:59Speaker 1: a sub urban hunter gatherer, every man, outdoors man, and
- 27:03Speaker 1: a professional amateur. In case you couldn't tell by his
- 27:06Speaker 1: book titles, his writing focuses on misadventures in the outdoors.
- 27:10Speaker 1: If you want to learn more about Heave, then listen
- 27:12Speaker 1: to episode three fifty one of the Wired Hunt podcast
- 27:15Speaker 1: where Mark Kennyon interviews him about his writing career. Is
- 27:19Speaker 1: he uh? Is he McManus's successor did he come in
- 27:22Speaker 1: right after him? I would say that he and he
- 27:24Speaker 1: assumed he assumed the throne of mcmah. Him and McManus
- 27:29Speaker 1: overlap man. But McManus is like, they shoot canoes, don't they?
- 27:33Speaker 1: And yeah, but I wonder if he took over his
- 27:37Speaker 1: position that it felt like he took over that space.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Is like the back page writer. It was a fielding, streamer,
- 27:43Speaker 1: outdoor life. McManus' best line ever was that whether it's
- 27:48Speaker 1: a creeker or crick depends on the Yeah. McManus had
- 27:54Speaker 1: a lot of writing I didn't know this until recently
- 27:56Speaker 1: that was not focused on the outdoors. Seemed like he
- 27:58Speaker 1: was writing like almost some mystery stuff that had to
- 28:02Speaker 1: do with the outdoors that I think also had humor
- 28:05Speaker 1: sprinkled in. No, he's funny man, Phil. We have two
- 28:08Speaker 1: questions left. Give us a scoreboard update. We have two
- 28:11Speaker 1: questions left, and we have two players left in the game,
- 28:13Speaker 1: and those two players are Stephen Marinella, who's in first
- 28:16Speaker 1: place of seven points but kind of warm on his trails.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Jannetellis with five points. So if Steve. If Steve fails
- 28:26Speaker 1: to get these next two and Janni gets them correct,
- 28:28Speaker 1: it's a tag him. Yeah. See if Yanni has got
- 28:32Speaker 1: a cold nose or not? Question nine, the topic is geared.
- 28:36Speaker 1: This next great question comes to us via David Chestnut.
- 28:39Speaker 1: If you have a question you think is right for
- 28:41Speaker 1: Meat Eater Trivia, ascend it to trivia at the meat
- 28:43Speaker 1: eater dot com. Five states have a firearm on their
- 28:48Speaker 1: state flag name one of them. Five states have a
- 28:55Speaker 1: firearm on their state flag name one of those states.
- 29:00Speaker 1: It seems like nobody knew this right off the bat.
- 29:05Speaker 1: This could be I'm like racking my fifth grade education
- 29:09Speaker 1: brain like learning all the state flag. This could be
- 29:13Speaker 1: what helps Yanni catch up with Steve looking for one
- 29:16Speaker 1: of the five states with a firearm on their flag.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Nobody knew this right off the bat, Yanni, it's gonna
- 29:28Speaker 1: be tough to catch him if you don't write an answer. No,
- 29:30Speaker 1: I'm the right one, you know what? I think? I
- 29:35Speaker 1: just remember, does everybody have an answer looking for the state?
- 29:42Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying California,
- 29:46Speaker 1: Bill saying Virginia, Maggie saying Tennessee, Chester, you're saying Wisconsin,
- 29:51Speaker 1: Brodie saying New Hampshire, Corin saying Texas, and Janice saying Montana.
- 29:57Speaker 1: The five states are Delaware, West virgin India, Michigan, Minnesota,
- 30:02Speaker 1: and Wyoming. So I think nobody got it despite having
- 30:07Speaker 1: someone from Wyoming and multiple people from Michigan in here.
- 30:10Speaker 1: A lot of us got so much stuff on them,
- 30:13Speaker 1: you know they do. That's why I went with Montanas.
- 30:15Speaker 1: I could have wanted a dude stand there might be
- 30:17Speaker 1: holding onto a long smoke pole, but he's not. He's
- 30:20Speaker 1: got like a act or something in his hand. I
- 30:22Speaker 1: think Delawares show is a revolutionary soldier with a long gun.
- 30:26Speaker 1: West Virginia's shows two hunting rifles crossed on the ground.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Michigan shows a man with his right hand raised in peace,
- 30:34Speaker 1: but his left hand holding a gun. Some versions of
- 30:37Speaker 1: Minnesota's flags show a pioneer with a rifle leaning against
- 30:40Speaker 1: a tree stump, and some versions of Wyoming's flags show
- 30:43Speaker 1: a cowboy with a holstered pistol. How did I grow
- 30:46Speaker 1: up in Michigan not notice it? I didn't like it?
- 30:50Speaker 1: What do you like? So some old versions, and it
- 30:55Speaker 1: depends on where you buy the flag from how accurate
- 30:57Speaker 1: they are. But flags change over time a on with
- 31:00Speaker 1: state seals and Wyoming's um I believe now the cowboy
- 31:04Speaker 1: doesn't have a holstered pistol, but if you bought one
- 31:06Speaker 1: like twenty years ago, he would have the holster pistol.
- 31:09Speaker 1: I mean that famous bucking Bronco one. No, Wyoming has
- 31:14Speaker 1: the big bison in the center of the flag, and
- 31:15Speaker 1: it makes the state seal in the middle of that,
- 31:18Speaker 1: and the seal shows a cowboy with a holster pistol.
- 31:21Speaker 1: But I think some versions just show like a generic
- 31:25Speaker 1: something hanging on his belt. It could be a players,
- 31:27Speaker 1: it could be a knife, but older versions show that
- 31:31Speaker 1: it's very clearly a pistol. We know our winner of
- 31:34Speaker 1: meat Eat Trivia, Steve congratulations. We still have a question, Steve.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Last time, it never gets less impressive. I guess. Oh man,
- 31:47Speaker 1: you know my girls just like six miles two days
- 31:50Speaker 1: in a row backpacks when I was pretty proud. But
- 31:52Speaker 1: I'm pretty I'm glad. You want motivation to stay motivating.
- 31:57Speaker 1: The girls had six miles of backpacks on Yeah, that's great, man.
- 32:02Speaker 1: We have one question left here. Topic is conservation. The
- 32:06Speaker 1: US Fish and Wildlife Service recommended declaring this animal extinct
- 32:11Speaker 1: in one whose nickname is the Lord god Bird. The
- 32:18Speaker 1: US Fish and Wildlife Service recommended declaring this animal extinct
- 32:22Speaker 1: in whose nickname is the Lord god Bird. Seems like
- 32:29Speaker 1: nobody knew this one right off the bat. I'm just
- 32:32Speaker 1: gonna be getting some educated guesses, Steve with the quickest answer.
- 32:36Speaker 1: How you feel about this, Steve, You could get this
- 32:42Speaker 1: wrong and contradict itself, prove the Shelby Index fairly accurate,
- 32:47Speaker 1: or if you get it right, you just blew it
- 32:48Speaker 1: out of the water. We haven't had overtime in quite
- 32:51Speaker 1: a while. We're not gonna get it again today. It's disappointed.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I just got overtime questions banked up and ready, does
- 32:58Speaker 1: everybody have an answer? Now? Those are fun to play
- 33:01Speaker 1: to the Lord God bird hate the lids on these pens.
- 33:07Speaker 1: It just fall up. Can't almost boycott Spencer bys better
- 33:14Speaker 1: a bird or an animal that is like on the verge.
- 33:21Speaker 1: You ready, yeah, gonna, It's not gonna be hot. If
- 33:29Speaker 1: you can give a hint, if you think you know it,
- 33:31Speaker 1: and you you've already secured the victory my understanding. If
- 33:34Speaker 1: I'm right, it's something that is wide that has been
- 33:37Speaker 1: widely understood to be extinct. I give another hint here. Uh.
- 33:42Speaker 1: It's last confirmed sighting was Louisiana in nine And people
- 33:49Speaker 1: see it and they get all excited, and then someone
- 33:52Speaker 1: comes out and says, son, what you're looking at as
- 33:54Speaker 1: affiliated woodpecker, and go ahead and reveal your Yeah, Steve
- 34:00Speaker 1: saying the Ivory build woodpecker, Bill without an answer. Maggie
- 34:04Speaker 1: had it before Steve's hands saying the Ivory build wood
- 34:07Speaker 1: Chessie without an answer, hands got its, Karin without an answer,
- 34:14Speaker 1: and Janice post Hands says, Ivory built woodpecker. That's correct,
- 34:18Speaker 1: It's the Ivory build woodpecker. Ornithologists gave them this nickname
- 34:22Speaker 1: because of what people cried out the first time they
- 34:25Speaker 1: ever saw one quote Lord God, what a bird. The
- 34:31Speaker 1: last universally accepted sighting of the Ivory build woodpecker came
- 34:34Speaker 1: out of Louisiana in nineteen forty four, but on official
- 34:37Speaker 1: sightings have been reported since then in states like Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi,
- 34:43Speaker 1: and Cuba. Steve is our winner with eight correct answers.
- 34:50Speaker 1: I've never seen smiles so big. Now, what happens next?
- 34:56Speaker 1: Steve gets to choose with a five hundred dollar donation,
- 34:58Speaker 1: goes for winnings. Steve, what's it gonna be? Spencer? It's
- 35:06Speaker 1: no big you know me winning? It's normal. What do
- 35:09Speaker 1: I normally do? Keep my money because I'm on the board.
- 35:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna give my money to the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation
- 35:16Speaker 1: Partnership next time I win. If it turns out that
- 35:19Speaker 1: the Tennessee Wildlife Federation Foundation, Federation Fed Federation, if they
- 35:26Speaker 1: are eager to get that squirrel eating tournament back there,
- 35:31Speaker 1: I'll donate and the Mean and Yannio go to the
- 35:33Speaker 1: squirrel eating turn Wow, that is an incentive anything together
- 35:38Speaker 1: anymore so, it'd be a fun little trip for us. Yea,
- 35:41Speaker 1: the squirrel I think it's the squirrel world champion, the
- 35:44Speaker 1: world champion. Squirrel cuck off has already taken, So Tennessee
- 35:47Speaker 1: is gonna have to start their own version of that
- 35:48Speaker 1: then to get you boys down there. If you go,
- 35:51Speaker 1: you gotta enter your own dish, though, what would you
- 35:55Speaker 1: make squirrel House and pevere I knew that was gonna
- 35:58Speaker 1: be the answer, Yanni, would you agree with that? I
- 36:00Speaker 1: knew that was gonna be his answer. I've made it.
- 36:02Speaker 1: It's a little too tangy for me personally. Could you
- 36:05Speaker 1: send me list some Alabama white sauce on it? Well,
- 36:08Speaker 1: I might brave is squirrel in Alabama white sauce? I
- 36:11Speaker 1: like it. Steve is our winner, donating to t r
- 36:15Speaker 1: c P. That's it for this game of trivia, Little
- 36:18Speaker 1: guaranteeing Americans argue with that, you can't. You can't unless
- 36:24Speaker 1: unless there's a squirrel cook off on the line. Then
- 36:26Speaker 1: then you could argue that's it for me either. Trivia
- 36:29Speaker 1: the only game show where conservation always wins. Thanks Bet, sir,
