Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: hottest influencer and pop culture news twice a week. I'm
- 0:10Speaker 1: Kate Torber.
- 0:11Speaker 2: And I'm Sophie Torber.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And coming up on today's show, a popular podcaster is
- 0:16Speaker 1: under fire for documenting a controversial cosmetic surgery brand trip.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Steph Clare-Smith's kid-free stay-kay and Olivia Rogers.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Unique push present.
- 0:25Speaker 1: But first, we are recording from Arctic conditions today. We
- 0:28Speaker 1: are in our parents' spare room, which has sort of
- 0:31Speaker 1: turned into a bit of a nursery for the kids
- 0:33Speaker 1: because We don't have our regular studio to record in,
- 0:37Speaker 1: aka Amy's house. Yeah, Amy's on a shoot for your
- 0:39Speaker 1: PR company at the moment. That's why she's absent. But
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm surprised you can't hear my teeth chattering.
- 0:44Speaker 2: It is that cold. My hands are like frozen. It's
- 0:47Speaker 2: so funny. I said to dad... are you not cold?
- 0:50Speaker 2: He's like, yeah, I am.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I'm like, why don't you, like, is there any other
- 0:53Speaker 1: people's parents that just don't use the heater or the
- 0:56Speaker 1: air conditioner? Well, actually, when I was sitting there, I
- 0:58Speaker 1: didn't want to appear cold because I didn't want to
- 1:00Speaker 1: be rude. But then I noticed dad putting on a
- 1:02Speaker 1: third layer of his jacket while he was talking to me. It's,
- 1:05Speaker 1: I mean, I can understand why people don't want to
- 1:07Speaker 1: use the heating at the moment. The electricity bills are astronomical.
- 1:11Speaker 1: We have had ours blaring, though, all day at home.
- 1:14Speaker 1: So it is quite a bit.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Of a change to come here.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:17Speaker 1: But speaking stereotypically, it's not like the boomers can't afford it.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Like mom and dad could definitely afford to have the
- 1:22Speaker 1: heater going.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23Speaker 1: But that's how they stay rich because they don't indulge
- 1:25Speaker 1: in heating. It's funny because our mom also hates using
- 1:28Speaker 1: a dryer. Like she's like, why would I use a
- 1:30Speaker 1: dryer when I can just hang it out? It's like
- 1:32Speaker 1: in winter, it takes like a week for the clothes
- 1:34Speaker 1: to dry outside. I am feeling a little bit nostalgic
- 1:37Speaker 1: being in Amy's old childhood bedroom. Some of our old
- 1:39Speaker 1: stuff's been put in here. And I can't get over
- 1:42Speaker 1: the 2012 jewellery trees. Oh, we need to take a
- 1:46Speaker 1: photo and put it on the Instagram story. They are
- 1:48Speaker 1: so hideous. I love the fact that we had two.
- 1:50Speaker 1: So Kate and I had to share a room and
- 1:51Speaker 1: we've got these two fucking jewellery trees.
- 1:54Speaker 2: They are so ugly.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I mean, the idea is that you hang your jewellery
- 1:58Speaker 1: off there so you can sort of display it.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Fucking hideous. What were we thinking?
- 2:02Speaker 1: The fact that there would have been those really heavy,
- 2:04Speaker 1: chunky necklaces on it makes it even worse. I'm sitting
- 2:07Speaker 1: next to a blobby lamp.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So, well, lava lamp, as you call it. I mean,
- 2:11Speaker 2: some of this stuff definitely needs to go, but I
- 2:14Speaker 2: don't have the heart.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:15Speaker 2: They can just keep it here.
- 2:17Speaker 4: While I was pregnant, Hugo was in talks with class
- 2:21Speaker 4: A jewelers and organized the most beautiful push present for me.
- 2:28Speaker 1: A month after giving birth, Olivia Rogers has revealed her
- 2:31Speaker 1: unique push present. The former Miss Universe contestant created a
- 2:35Speaker 1: reel unveiling the piece of jewelry. Now, she was very
- 2:39Speaker 1: quick to point out that this ring was not an
- 2:42Speaker 1: engagement ring, but rather a pinky ring containing her son
- 2:46Speaker 1: Albert's birthstone, which is an emerald. For those who haven't
- 2:50Speaker 1: seen the ring, it's this large green emerald surrounded by
- 2:53Speaker 1: diamonds on a gold band.
- 2:55Speaker 2: What did you think of it?
- 2:56Speaker 1: I mean, I think you can tell by that pause
- 2:58Speaker 1: that I'm trying to think of a polite way to
- 3:01Speaker 1: say this, but pinky rings in general give me the ick,
- 3:04Speaker 1: particularly on men.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Hate them.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I think they're actually in fashion for women, but can't
- 3:10Speaker 1: stand it. Like if I got given a pinky ring,
- 3:12Speaker 1: I'd be really upset.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah, they're a bit of an ick for me too.
- 3:16Speaker 1: In saying that, I love Meghan Markle's style and she
- 3:19Speaker 1: is one to wear a pinky ring.
- 3:20Speaker 2: So maybe I can get around it. I think the.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Difference is women usually wear the pinky ring alongside other rings.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So there's like stacked options and it's kind of, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 1: a bunch of different jewellery, whereas men often rock the
- 3:31Speaker 1: pinky ring without other rings on their hand.
- 3:34Speaker 2: That's very specific.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I don't know. Maybe it's just something
- 3:37Speaker 1: about a man. I don't particularly like when men wear
- 3:39Speaker 1: a lot of jewellery.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Except a wedding band. That makes a man look hot.
- 3:42Speaker 2: That's hot, yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I mean, it's not really the most practical gift for
- 3:46Speaker 1: a mum. Is it a pinky ring? I can imagine
- 3:48Speaker 1: that getting just caught on everything. Imagine changing a baby
- 3:51Speaker 1: with a pinky ring on. I mean, you're probably not
- 3:52Speaker 1: wearing it all the time, probably for special occasions. Yeah.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I think a traditional push present is usually an eternity ring,
- 4:00Speaker 1: but he can't really give her an eternity ring because
- 4:02Speaker 1: often you get it after your engagement and wedding band.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So I can see why he went with the pinky ring.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And also- Maybe he wanted to be very clear that
- 4:10Speaker 1: it wasn't an engagement ring.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing.
- 4:11Speaker 1: So usually a push present is presented to the mother
- 4:15Speaker 1: in hospital after they've given birth.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Or the day before, like my husband did.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Well, that's not really stereotypical, but he usually does that.
- 4:22Speaker 1: He's all want for an early present, isn't he? It's
- 4:25Speaker 1: almost like he gets too excited.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Anyway, so yes, they are usually presented to the
- 4:29Speaker 2: mother once they've given birth.
- 4:31Speaker 1: But this present arrived a month after because it was
- 4:35Speaker 1: a collaboration with Class A Jewelers.
- 4:38Speaker 2: And I am kind of glad.
- 4:39Speaker 1: That Hugo didn't give it to Olivia in the hospital
- 4:41Speaker 1: because can you imagine the optics?
- 4:43Speaker 2: She's just given birth, like the hormones are running wild.
- 4:46Speaker 1: He hands her a ring box.
- 4:49Speaker 2: You would assume it was an engagement ring.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And what a punch in the face if you opened
- 4:54Speaker 1: it up and it's this fucking pinky ring, this out
- 4:56Speaker 1: there pinky ring that you're not expecting. To be fair though,
- 4:59Speaker 1: I don't think I'd want to be proposed to after
- 5:01Speaker 1: giving birth. Like I think you've got to keep that
- 5:04Speaker 1: moment as it is and enjoy that and then I think, yeah,
- 5:08Speaker 1: it's better coming later on when you're feeling more yourself.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Now, as I said, this does appear to be some
- 5:14Speaker 1: sort of gifted or sponsored moment from Class A jewelers,
- 5:17Speaker 1: which is an Adelaide jeweler. Well, actually my engagement ring
- 5:20Speaker 1: and my push present both came from Class A jeweler.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Unfortunately, they weren't gifted. My husband paid top dollar for them.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Well, Olivia did tag Class A jewelers in this post
- 5:29Speaker 1: and She said that while she was pregnant, Hugo was
- 5:32Speaker 1: in talks with Class A jewelers and organized the most
- 5:35Speaker 1: beautiful push present for her.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So that really made it sound like it was a
- 5:38Speaker 2: brand deal.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I wonder if the brand reached out to Hugo directly
- 5:42Speaker 1: or if Olivia put them onto him. Well, she does
- 5:45Speaker 1: have a longstanding relationship with Class A jewelers. So they
- 5:49Speaker 1: sponsored her marathon and she's done some other work with them,
- 5:53Speaker 1: which is kind of ironic because she also had a
- 5:57Speaker 1: deal with another jeweler in Melbourne. Was it Diamonds Jeweler?
- 6:01Speaker 1: And they created her engagement ring. But ironically, she spoke
- 6:05Speaker 1: on the Inherited podcast last year, I think it was.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And she mentioned that she wasn't actually that big of
- 6:11Speaker 1: a fan of the ring. So on the morning of
- 6:13Speaker 1: her wedding, her mom gifted her a family ring. I
- 6:17Speaker 1: think it was her grandmother's engagement ring. And she said
- 6:20Speaker 1: that it was this moment where she realized that she
- 6:23Speaker 1: loved that ring way more than her engagement ring. And
- 6:27Speaker 1: it sort of pointed out that Justin didn't know her
- 6:29Speaker 1: very well, which was so awkward because that ring was
- 6:32Speaker 1: called the Olivia ring.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I remember thinking it was amazing.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Now, do we think Hugo gets credit for this push
- 6:38Speaker 1: present if he didn't pay for it? Look, I think
- 6:40Speaker 1: behind the scenes, he would have given her another present
- 6:43Speaker 1: at the hospital. And this is sort of all show business,
- 6:45Speaker 1: you know, it's all for the sponsored post. I mean,
- 6:48Speaker 1: he did, appear to design this ring as well. So
- 6:50Speaker 1: he gets a little bit of credit there. It's quite
- 6:53Speaker 1: funny because one follower wrote under the rule, I love it.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Also very impressed that he knows your taste so well,
- 6:58Speaker 1: because it's a pretty niche style.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And Olivia said, it's pretty, isn't it? He does know
- 7:03Speaker 2: me well.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Now I can't decipher in that comment, whether she does
- 7:07Speaker 1: like it or not.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 7:08Speaker 1: Even someone saying it's unique and she's saying, yeah, he
- 7:11Speaker 1: does know me as pretty.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Like, I wonder if she was a bit thrown, like, oh,
- 7:14Speaker 2: this is a bit out there.
- 7:16Speaker 1: It would be tough also considering she's put out there
- 7:18Speaker 1: on the record that her ex-husband, Justin McKeon, didn't know
- 7:21Speaker 1: her and got her the wrong ring. Like there's a
- 7:23Speaker 1: bit of pressure on Hugo to design the right one.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Just say she isn't the biggest fan of the ring.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I wonder if she's like, oh my God, I need
- 7:29Speaker 1: to point him in the right direction of what engagement
- 7:31Speaker 1: ring I want now.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Like I don't want a coloured stone.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I just want something elegant.
- 7:35Speaker 3: I can't believe now I'm just like going to check
- 7:38Speaker 3: into a hotel room.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Steph Claire Smith has surprised her husband by revealing two
- 7:43Speaker 1: new tattoos during their hotel stay in the city. The couple,
- 7:47Speaker 1: who have two young children, were craving a sleep-in, so
- 7:49Speaker 1: booked a kid-free weekend away.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Soph, this sounds like a great idea.
- 7:53Speaker 3: It does.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I want to do it after hearing about this.
- 7:55Speaker 1: So I heard about this weeks ago on the KickPod,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and basically they decided that they really wanted some time
- 8:02Speaker 1: as a couple, but they also wanted alone time and
- 8:05Speaker 1: the opportunity to have a sleep-in and do whatever they wanted.
- 8:08Speaker 3: But.
- 8:09Speaker 1: They didn't want to be away from their kids and
- 8:12Speaker 1: also rely too heavily on their parents to babysit. So
- 8:16Speaker 1: what they ended up doing was booking a three-night stay
- 8:19Speaker 1: where Steph would stay by herself for the first night,
- 8:23Speaker 1: do whatever she wanted to do, have a sleep in.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Then Josh would meet her the next day. They'd go
- 8:28Speaker 2: on a date.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I think they actually planned to go out dancing, which
- 8:30Speaker 1: didn't end up happening.
- 8:31Speaker 2: They were too tired.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And then Steph would go home and Josh would then
- 8:35Speaker 1: have the day to himself and the night to himself.
- 8:38Speaker 1: It's actually genius. It's a great way to extend that
- 8:41Speaker 1: sort of me time and also guilt-free because I find
- 8:45Speaker 1: that if it's your partner looking after your children, you
- 8:48Speaker 1: don't feel as bad. But when you have a babysitter,
- 8:50Speaker 1: like if you had a babysitter there for three nights,
- 8:52Speaker 1: you'd feel terrible. Also, you know that your kids would
- 8:54Speaker 1: be missing you. And I think alone time is so
- 8:58Speaker 1: important when you are a parent. I mean, last week
- 9:00Speaker 1: I had the week from hell, my son was sick
- 9:02Speaker 1: and I was reflecting. I'm like, I'm so tired, but
- 9:04Speaker 1: I keep staying up really late. Because I need like
- 9:07Speaker 1: an hour to myself.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Just to decompress. Yeah, you definitely do. Now this trip
- 9:14Speaker 2: was sponsored.
- 9:14Speaker 1: So it was in partnership with Luxury Escapes and they
- 9:18Speaker 1: stayed at the Hyde Melbourne place and she showed off
- 9:21Speaker 1: her massive suite on her Instagram story.
- 9:23Speaker 2: It looked absolutely incredible.
- 9:24Speaker 1: She also uploaded a photo dump of their weekend away
- 9:27Speaker 1: telling her followers that about the dream.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Reset that she had just experienced.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Now, she also uploaded a reel today and I loved
- 9:34Speaker 1: watching her day in the life of what she got
- 9:36Speaker 1: up to.
- 9:36Speaker 2: So she went and got her hair done. I think
- 9:39Speaker 2: that's a yes for any mum.
- 9:41Speaker 1: She then brought her laptop from 10 years ago into
- 9:46Speaker 1: the hotel so that she could try and play her
- 9:48Speaker 1: old Sims game. Now, to me, that is someone who
- 9:52Speaker 1: is wanting to, or maybe mourning their old life a
- 9:55Speaker 1: little bit and wanting to go and experience or have
- 9:57Speaker 1: that feeling again of what it felt like to be
- 9:59Speaker 1: in your early twenties when you had no responsibilities. And
- 10:02Speaker 1: I can completely relate to that. Like it's almost this
- 10:04Speaker 1: cosplaying your old life.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So that's all she did. She got her hair done
- 10:08Speaker 2: and played Sims.
- 10:09Speaker 1: After that, she went to the restaurant at the hotel
- 10:12Speaker 1: and she brought her Kindle down.
- 10:13Speaker 2: She thought she'd only be there for a little while.
- 10:15Speaker 1: She ended up staying for three hours, chatting to the
- 10:18Speaker 1: hotel staff. She said that She was literally almost crying
- 10:21Speaker 1: because she'd been laughing so much and that she'd had
- 10:23Speaker 1: a couple of wines and was that close to giving
- 10:25Speaker 1: a $ 150 tip to someone.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Like that's how much fun she was having. Good on her.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I mean, can you imagine being out at this bar
- 10:32Speaker 1: and just seeing Steph Klessmith, living it up, being the waiter,
- 10:35Speaker 1: having a chat?
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:36Speaker 1: She then popped to the 7-Eleven, got some chocolate and
- 10:39Speaker 1: some popcorn and watched TV for the rest of the night.
- 10:41Speaker 2: It sounded absolutely perfect.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I need to ask, Soph, what would you do if
- 10:44Speaker 1: you had that time to yourself? Oh.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Because I'm going to put it out there. I don't really,
- 10:51Speaker 2: I mean, I said that.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I find that alone time is really important, but I
- 10:55Speaker 1: think I'd prefer to spend that 24 hours with you
- 10:57Speaker 1: and Amy as well. Yeah, that's what I was going
- 10:59Speaker 1: to say. Our alone time is sort of spending it
- 11:01Speaker 1: with each other. We have a trip locked in for
- 11:04Speaker 1: October when we're seeing Hilary Duff. So that's, I think,
- 11:06Speaker 1: my first night that I'm ever going to be away
- 11:08Speaker 1: from Luca. And I feel like we won't know what
- 11:10Speaker 1: to do with ourselves. I just think you need a
- 11:12Speaker 1: nice long dinner, some shopping.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I think I'm so shocked. No, we don't drink, but
- 11:17Speaker 2: we've got to get some.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Shopping, like just bad food, like just, just to be
- 11:21Speaker 1: alone and just scroll on your phone as well.
- 11:24Speaker 2: And I'm just desperate for a sleep in.
- 11:26Speaker 1: The unfortunate thing about staying in a hotel is I
- 11:28Speaker 1: feel like I never sleep well. Like you don't sleep
- 11:30Speaker 1: the same as you would at home. Well, the thing
- 11:32Speaker 1: that's genius about Steph's plan was that they said that
- 11:35Speaker 1: they wanted to be able to sleep in. And usually
- 11:37Speaker 1: you get kicked out of the hotel at like 9am
- 11:39Speaker 1: or 10am. That's why they did it that way.
- 11:41Speaker 2: So they could do it in shifts. So then Josh
- 11:44Speaker 2: met her in the afternoon to start his day. You
- 11:46Speaker 2: know what I mean? But then doesn't Josh not get his?
- 11:48Speaker 1: Because he was on day three of alone time. So
- 11:50Speaker 1: he doesn't really get a sleep in or to spend
- 11:52Speaker 1: the whole day at the hotel by himself.
- 11:54Speaker 2: He got screwed there. Well, no, because he joined her
- 11:56Speaker 2: for the couple day. So he had that half of
- 11:58Speaker 2: the day as well. Yeah, but that's not as good
- 12:00Speaker 2: as Steph. Like Steph set that up really well. Well,
- 12:02Speaker 2: she had the kid. So I think she deserves it. Yeah, true. Well,
- 12:05Speaker 2: and he's the... I do want to say he's a
- 12:07Speaker 2: primary caregiver at home. Does that change your mind? Oh yeah, true.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Well, it's quite funny because I think that, you know,
- 12:13Speaker 1: Josh and Steph thought they were going to have this
- 12:15Speaker 1: like crazy night out where they were dancing the night away.
- 12:17Speaker 2: She did that the night before at the bar. They
- 12:20Speaker 2: ended up getting tired.
- 12:21Speaker 1: So she said they had a bath and watched Charlie
- 12:22Speaker 1: and the Chocolate Factory. Another influencer I follow who has,
- 12:27Speaker 1: I think a nine month old, her name's Sarah Jane Stevens.
- 12:29Speaker 1: She's actually an Adelaide influencer. She was sharing that she
- 12:32Speaker 1: had a night at a hotel as well with her partner,
- 12:34Speaker 1: Kid Free. And she was set. She's like, it's 9pm
- 12:38Speaker 1: and we're in bed watching a movie. Like she was
- 12:41Speaker 1: so excited. She's like, there's no way we want to
- 12:42Speaker 1: go out. We just want to eat snacks in bed
- 12:44Speaker 1: and have a good sleep.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Now, one thing I have held off from mentioning is
- 12:48Speaker 1: that during Steph's solo day, she also got some new tattoos,
- 12:51Speaker 1: but she didn't tell her husband because she wanted to
- 12:53Speaker 1: reveal it as a surprise. I mean, she mentioned that
- 12:55Speaker 1: Josh knew she was thinking about it, but didn't know
- 12:58Speaker 1: she was actually pulling the trigger on it. And it
- 12:59Speaker 1: actually reminded me of a situation with some of my friends.
- 13:03Speaker 1: One of my friends went and got some tattoos but
- 13:04Speaker 1: she didn't actually tell her partner about it. And we
- 13:07Speaker 1: were saying, well, from a relationship perspective, like are there rules?
- 13:11Speaker 1: Like do you have to let your partner know that
- 13:13Speaker 1: you're getting a tattoo? Is it your body, your choice?
- 13:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it is a hard.
- 13:17Speaker 1: One because I think if Brandon rocked up and he
- 13:19Speaker 1: just had, you know, such as life tattoo across his stomach,
- 13:23Speaker 1: I might be like, well, what's going on?
- 13:24Speaker 2: That's very out of character. I'm not really a fan
- 13:26Speaker 2: of that. Yeah.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I suppose it depends on how you feel about tattoos.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Like if you're someone that's open to tattoos and likes them,
- 13:33Speaker 1: I think maybe the surprise would work well, but if
- 13:35Speaker 1: your partner's anti-tattoos and it's kind of like when women say, oh,
- 13:40Speaker 1: my husband doesn't want me to get filler in my face.
- 13:42Speaker 2: So I just want to got it and hope that
- 13:43Speaker 2: he didn't realize.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I mean, at the end of the day, I think
- 13:45Speaker 1: it is your body, your choice, but I think any
- 13:48Speaker 1: huge life decision, you normally would speak about it with
- 13:51Speaker 1: your partner. I mean, in Steph Clay Smith's case, these
- 13:53Speaker 1: are two fine line tattoos.
- 13:55Speaker 2: But still, that's a permanent thing on your body. Yeah,
- 13:56Speaker 2: but it's not like it's some massive, like life-changing thing.
- 14:00Speaker 2: It's like a small tattoo. Like one was of a
- 14:02Speaker 2: little love heart, wasn't it? Yeah, it was an outline
- 14:04Speaker 2: of a love heart her son had drawn.
- 14:06Speaker 1: The other one... was actually from a photograph of her
- 14:10Speaker 1: and Josh when she was 16 and he was 18.
- 14:12Speaker 1: They actually weren't together at the time. They were on
- 14:14Speaker 1: the back of a motorbike. It was doing a wheelie,
- 14:17Speaker 1: wasn't it? Yeah, and she said that I think it
- 14:19Speaker 1: was to kind of to recreate the feeling she had
- 14:21Speaker 1: because she said at the time she had such a.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Big crush on him and that kind of commemorated it.
- 14:25Speaker 2: That's actually very sweet. I liked his reaction. We'll actually
- 14:28Speaker 2: throw to it.
- 14:29Speaker 3: I want that.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Let's see here.
- 14:38Speaker 3: That is fucking– what the hell?
- 14:40Speaker 4: You like it?
- 14:40Speaker 3: That's sick. You know what that is?
- 14:42Speaker 2: Of course I know what that is.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I think that's what you want when you surprise your
- 14:47Speaker 1: husband with a tattoo, them to say, oh, I want
- 14:48Speaker 1: to get that one too.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it was very sweet.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I mean they have such a cute story of how
- 14:54Speaker 1: they got together because really all the odds were against
- 14:56Speaker 1: them when she moved to New York. I mean she's
- 14:58Speaker 1: moving to New York to be this huge model. He's
- 15:00Speaker 1: this like guy back in Melbourne. Yeah, but I think
- 15:02Speaker 1: the fact that she had a crush on him ever
- 15:04Speaker 1: since she was 16– He was always on a pedestal.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Yeah, true.
- 15:09Speaker 2: True.
- 15:10Speaker 3: So Beck has just landed in Bali ahead of her
- 15:12Speaker 3: surgery on Saturday.
- 15:13Speaker 4: I'm starting to feel nervous, Josh. What am I doing?
- 15:17Speaker 1: Uh-oh.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Over the next 24 hours, 10 other Australian influencers are
- 15:22Speaker 3: coming to undergo the same procedure.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Maths contestant Beck Zachariah has revealed she's having her ribs
- 15:28Speaker 1: recontoured in a procedure that's illegal in Australia. The 35-year-old
- 15:33Speaker 1: is joining a group of nine Australian influencers who are
- 15:37Speaker 1: taking part in a brand trip to Bali.
- 15:39Speaker 2: To promote the controversial cosmetic procedure. Bec is not only
- 15:43Speaker 2: sharing her experience to her own.
- 15:44Speaker 1: 88,000 followers, but journalist Joshua Fox is also documenting her
- 15:49Speaker 1: journey on.
- 15:50Speaker 2: His popular podcast, Maths Funny.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Now, Kate, before we get into the backlash, can you
- 15:55Speaker 1: get listeners up to speed with what rib recontouring actually is?
- 15:59Speaker 2: I have never heard of this. It's a bit of
- 16:00Speaker 2: a mouthful, isn't it?
- 16:02Speaker 1: Now, it is the fastest growing cosmetic procedure in the world,
- 16:05Speaker 1: but it's not yet available in Australia, hence why influencers
- 16:09Speaker 1: are traveling to Bali to.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Get it done.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Now, the reason why it's not available here is because
- 16:14Speaker 1: we have a lot stricter cosmetic surgery regulations. So with
- 16:18Speaker 1: rib recontouring being a relatively new procedure, there's.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Limited long-term evidence on it.
- 16:25Speaker 1: So that's why Australian surgeons and hospitals deem the risk
- 16:28Speaker 1: to outweigh the benefit. And that's why they're not doing
- 16:30Speaker 1: it at this stage. It's a procedure we may see
- 16:32Speaker 1: introduced later down the track.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Now, online, the procedure is being.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Touted as a safer alternative to rib removal as it
- 16:42Speaker 1: reshapes the ribs rather than removes them. It's apparently less
- 16:46Speaker 1: invasive as well. There are no scars or wounds. Instead,
- 16:49Speaker 1: two tiny punctures are made into the patient's back.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And then this.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Powerful vibrating device is used to essentially weaken the bone's
- 16:59Speaker 1: outer layer. Once that's done, the bones are soft enough
- 17:03Speaker 1: that they are bent inwards.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 17:06Speaker 2: What the fuck is wrong with people?
- 17:08Speaker 1: Like that just sounds like the most ridiculous thing I
- 17:12Speaker 1: have ever heard. I can't believe we're at a stage
- 17:15Speaker 1: where people are having to have their bones bent to
- 17:18Speaker 1: fit a certain body ideal.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Like what is wrong with the world? I mean, surely
- 17:21Speaker 2: that's not good for you, for your bones to be bent.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I mean, the fact that it's talking about using a
- 17:25Speaker 1: powerful vibrating device to weaken the bones out of layers.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I mean, there's a reason this isn't illegal in Australia.
- 17:32Speaker 2: This sounds fucked. I mean, you have ribs for a reason.
- 17:35Speaker 2: They're to protect your internal organs.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I listened to one of the interviews on the Mass
- 17:39Speaker 1: Funny podcast and the woman was like, oh, it's not
- 17:41Speaker 1: like you're having any vital organs removed or anything. It's like, well,
- 17:44Speaker 1: I'd hope not. Just your bones restructured.
- 17:46Speaker 2: What the hell? This sounds more fucked than that cat
- 17:49Speaker 2: eye thing that Sky Wheatley had.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Well, as you mentioned at the start, so Beck Zachariah
- 17:55Speaker 1: is one of the 10 influencers that's on this brand trip.
- 17:58Speaker 1: And for those not familiar with her, she is one
- 18:00Speaker 1: of the most controversial contestants from the latest series of
- 18:03Speaker 1: Married at First Sight. Prior to the show, she actually
- 18:06Speaker 1: lost 25 kilos and was pretty open about her insecurities
- 18:10Speaker 1: around her body. Despite being so vulnerable on the show though,
- 18:14Speaker 1: she was mercifully trolled online about her appearances. And while
- 18:18Speaker 1: she's been in Bali, she's been sharing some of the
- 18:20Speaker 1: messages that she's been receiving and they are truly appalling.
- 18:25Speaker 1: People have been telling her to take her own life.
- 18:27Speaker 1: It's horrible. And she explained that those messages are part
- 18:30Speaker 1: of the reason why she's actually having the procedure done. Now,
- 18:34Speaker 1: in an interview with Josh Fox, she spoke about how
- 18:37Speaker 1: she has a lot of loose skin that she is
- 18:39Speaker 1: desperate to get rid of.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Here's more of what she said.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Your body, your choice, what you feel confident with and
- 18:45Speaker 3: what you feel comfortable.
- 18:46Speaker 2: With, fucking do it. So why are all these Karens
- 18:49Speaker 2: coming at me? Let me get my ribs done. No
- 18:53Speaker 2: one wants to look like me, obviously. Sid the Sloth
- 18:55Speaker 2: over here.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Don't put yourself down like that.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Shut up. Get your teeth done. Get your mouth done.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Get your jaw done.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Get your skin done.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Get your this done. Get your nose done. Like, trust me,
- 19:06Speaker 2: if I could.
- 19:07Speaker 3: I would.
- 19:07Speaker 2: I mean, those comments are absolutely appalling.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And I think a lot of people are shocked when
- 19:12Speaker 1: they hear that influencers or celebrities who are very attractive
- 19:15Speaker 1: are going and getting this work done that From the outside,
- 19:18Speaker 1: it looks like, oh, that's ridiculous.
- 19:20Speaker 2: You don't need that done.
- 19:21Speaker 1: But when you're receiving comments like that on a daily basis,
- 19:24Speaker 1: obviously it does ground down your self-confidence and make you think, oh,
- 19:28Speaker 1: I need to improve myself. That being said, it's weird
- 19:30Speaker 1: because she's talking about removing loose skin. This isn't a
- 19:33Speaker 1: procedure to remove loose skin. This is a procedure to
- 19:36Speaker 1: alter your ribs. Yeah, but she wants to get other
- 19:39Speaker 1: procedures done as well. Like she's just not happy with
- 19:42Speaker 1: how she looks at the moment. Now, as I mentioned,
- 19:44Speaker 1: Beck is on this trip with 10 other influencers. Some
- 19:47Speaker 1: of the names you might know are Mavs Contessa, Athena Ruttani,
- 19:52Speaker 1: Bachelor 2009 alumni Monique Morley and Carly Ellen.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Wow.
- 19:57Speaker 2: So contestants from 2009. Yeah. You would actually recognize her
- 20:01Speaker 2: if you saw her.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I can't think of who that is, but I mean,
- 20:04Speaker 1: is that because more mainstream influencers would say.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Nah, fuck that. I'm not getting that done. That sounds horrendous.
- 20:10Speaker 2: That's the vibe I'm getting.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I mean, sort of scraping the bottom of the barrel
- 20:14Speaker 1: as to what influencers would agree to go.
- 20:16Speaker 2: On this brand trip and undergo this surgery.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Now, Josh Fox's decision to join this brand trip to
- 20:23Speaker 1: Bali and document it has divided opinions. I want to
- 20:26Speaker 1: point out he isn't actually getting the surgery himself. He
- 20:29Speaker 1: is just there as a journalist to report on it.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he has made that very clear.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Now, since this first episode dropped of the miniseries, he's
- 20:36Speaker 1: received a lot of personal backlash. People have accused him
- 20:39Speaker 1: of promoting cosmetic surgery to impressionable people and being a.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Part of the problem.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Now, he has called it an investigation series and has
- 20:48Speaker 1: jokingly referred to himself as Louis Theroux. It's actually not
- 20:51Speaker 1: his first investigation for his podcast. So in March 2025,
- 20:56Speaker 1: he launched a mini investigation series into the downfall of
- 20:59Speaker 1: Married at First Sight. And if you look into his background,
- 21:02Speaker 1: this series is very on brand for him. So before
- 21:05Speaker 1: launching the podcast, he actually worked as a producer on
- 21:08Speaker 1: the Kyle and Jackie O Show. And before that, he
- 21:11Speaker 1: worked as a journalist in the UK where he made
- 21:14Speaker 1: a name for himself in the celebrity gossip space. He
- 21:17Speaker 1: became very known for getting the scoop on Charlotte Crosby
- 21:20Speaker 1: and Katie Price's latest cosmetic surgery. So he said he's
- 21:23Speaker 1: had a history of documenting cosmetic surgeries.
- 21:27Speaker 2: I mean, to me, this series does seem quite on
- 21:29Speaker 2: brand for him.
- 21:30Speaker 1: He was a little surprised by the criticism though, because
- 21:33Speaker 1: his podcast, Mass Funny, it has rave reviews. Just recently,
- 21:37Speaker 1: he won the best independent host and best new independent
- 21:40Speaker 1: podcast at the Australian Audio Awards. So I think he
- 21:43Speaker 1: was expecting people to get behind him and really enjoy
- 21:46Speaker 1: this series. Yeah, I did get the vibe though in
- 21:49Speaker 1: the first episode that he was really trying to get
- 21:51Speaker 1: on the front foot to prevent any backlash.
- 21:54Speaker 2: It it came across as a little bit defensive.
- 21:56Speaker 1: He went on this spiel about how he didn't know
- 21:58Speaker 1: better when he was working as a gossip journalist. And
- 22:01Speaker 1: he's since realized that these media companies were working to
- 22:04Speaker 1: exploit celebrities over their insecurities to make a profit, all
- 22:08Speaker 1: while promoting unrealistic standards to the public. I mean, obviously, tick, tick, tick,
- 22:12Speaker 1: that's great to say. But then it doesn't really contrast
- 22:15Speaker 1: across to then giving this.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Trip airtime as such.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I actually can relate to what he's saying because obviously
- 22:21Speaker 1: I've worked as a journalist before and sometimes when you're
- 22:23Speaker 1: outside of the industry and you reflect on the stories
- 22:26Speaker 1: that you covered or things that were discussed in the newsroom,
- 22:30Speaker 1: You realize that that now doesn't match up with your
- 22:32Speaker 1: own personal ethics and how fucked it actually is? Yeah,
- 22:35Speaker 1: obviously people are allowed to grow and change their minds.
- 22:38Speaker 1: I mean, he put it out there that his personal
- 22:40Speaker 1: preference is against surgery and he finds a lot of
- 22:42Speaker 1: the procedures really unnecessary. He did say your body, your choice,
- 22:47Speaker 1: but where is the line between self-love and just an
- 22:50Speaker 1: endless search for validation? So he was really trying to
- 22:52Speaker 1: set it up that he doesn't endorse it. but he
- 22:54Speaker 1: wants to show what actually goes on behind the scenes,
- 22:56Speaker 1: some transparency. Yeah, I thought it was a really clever
- 22:59Speaker 1: way to introduce the series and to make his listeners
- 23:03Speaker 1: very aware of his standing point.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Well, it was very transparent.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I mean, he also.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Spoke a lot about why he decided to cover the story.
- 23:10Speaker 1: So it turns out he actually received a tip off
- 23:12Speaker 1: about the brand trip from former Bachelor contestant Monique Morley,
- 23:16Speaker 1: the one that was on the 2009 edition that you've forgotten.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Now, initially he.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Told her he didn't want to discuss it on his
- 23:22Speaker 1: podcast because he didn't want to be seen to be
- 23:24Speaker 1: endorsing it because he doesn't really agree with it. However,
- 23:27Speaker 1: he did a bit more research and he got curious
- 23:30Speaker 1: about it, particularly when he found out that Beck from
- 23:32Speaker 1: Maths was on the trip.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Now, reading between the lines, I wrote it as, okay, Monique,
- 23:36Speaker 2: you're not really in the zeitgeist.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Relevant.
- 23:39Speaker 1: But the fact that Beck, who's the most controversial contestant
- 23:43Speaker 1: from Maths, is going on it, I think I need
- 23:45Speaker 1: to be there.
- 23:46Speaker 2: He then said this, And then.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Started to think like, hey, regardless who these girls are,
- 23:52Speaker 3: I think it's fair to say that between them, they'll have, say,
- 23:55Speaker 3: a minimum of, what, 2 million followers. And that's 2
- 23:59Speaker 3: million Australian women and potential young girls who will soon
- 24:04Speaker 3: be having this procedure and the results from this trip
- 24:07Speaker 3: in Bali forced into their news feeds. And that's 2
- 24:11Speaker 3: million people I thought, hey, they're only going to see
- 24:13Speaker 3: these strong before and after pictures from these influencers, presumably
- 24:18Speaker 3: with no wider context or balanced unbiased perspective of this
- 24:23Speaker 3: new craze. And that's when I started to entertain this
- 24:26Speaker 3: idea of coming here to document it.
- 24:29Speaker 2: And I thought, well, I want to find out more
- 24:32Speaker 2: about this.
- 24:32Speaker 3: So I reached out to the company behind this trip
- 24:35Speaker 3: and I set up a call. And initially that was
- 24:37Speaker 3: just to find out like, yo, what the hell is
- 24:39Speaker 3: actually going on here?
- 24:41Speaker 1: From a journalistic perspective, I totally get what he's saying.
- 24:46Speaker 1: There are two key areas though, where his defense falls
- 24:49Speaker 1: down a little bit for me. The first is the
- 24:51Speaker 1: fact that content creators no longer show just before and afters.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Like that was a sort of 2010 thing. They tell
- 24:58Speaker 1: the full story. They explain what they're doing. They show
- 25:01Speaker 1: the hospital bag that they've packed and the recovery, the scars,
- 25:04Speaker 1: the bruises, everything, because that is content that gets a
- 25:06Speaker 1: lot of views on social media. And that's been happening
- 25:09Speaker 1: for a long time. I mean, you know, even seven
- 25:11Speaker 1: or eight years ago, YouTubers were vlogging their boob jobs.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I have to somewhat disagree with you though, Kate, because
- 25:17Speaker 1: I think that this is a particular type of influencer
- 25:20Speaker 1: who's sharing all of the gory details. Sometimes they are
- 25:23Speaker 1: lesser known influencers who are desperate to build a following
- 25:27Speaker 1: and they want that sort of shock value. Whereas I
- 25:29Speaker 1: think a lot of top celebrities and top influencers are
- 25:33Speaker 1: are going and getting these procedures done behind the scenes
- 25:36Speaker 1: and not talking about it and wanting people to just
- 25:39Speaker 1: assume that they've eaten healthy or they've used this special
- 25:43Speaker 1: skin cream. Yeah, but that's not the case with this
- 25:46Speaker 1: brand trip. All of these influencers are being taken over
- 25:48Speaker 1: to document their process. They're not just showing a before
- 25:51Speaker 1: and after. So for him to use an excuse as, oh,
- 25:54Speaker 1: but I've got to be there to be transparent. Yeah,
- 25:56Speaker 1: but at the same time, are these influencers really going
- 25:59Speaker 1: to cover this experience in a transparent way if they've
- 26:02Speaker 1: been gifted flights, accommodation, presumably the procedure. No, they're going
- 26:05Speaker 1: to talk about how great it is. They're not really
- 26:07Speaker 1: going to be saying, oh, that was really painful or
- 26:11Speaker 1: that was scary or I didn't like that. They're not
- 26:14Speaker 1: really going to give an honest review. I mean, can
- 26:16Speaker 1: you give an honest review if you're being paid?
- 26:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely agree.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I think the water is muddied when influencers share behind
- 26:22Speaker 1: the scenes of a procedure and then you find out
- 26:24Speaker 1: it's actually been gifted or paid for or it's an ad.
- 26:27Speaker 1: And as you said, that's what's happening in this case.
- 26:31Speaker 2: And that is where the second.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Part of Josh's defense falls down again for me, because
- 26:35Speaker 1: during his explanation of why he's covering the story, he
- 26:38Speaker 1: said he reached out to the company to find out more. Now,
- 26:41Speaker 1: the company who is running the trip is called Snatched Waste.
- 26:44Speaker 2: That name just says it all, doesn't it?
- 26:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:46Speaker 1: And they have an interesting business model. So they basically
- 26:48Speaker 1: sell luxury package holidays that happen to include a rib
- 26:52Speaker 1: re-contouring procedure. So they organize, as you predicted, all the flights,
- 26:57Speaker 1: accommodation transfers, hospital stays, recovery. And Josh made this big
- 27:01Speaker 1: point in the first episode that he told the company
- 27:03Speaker 1: he had two big conditions of him being involved in
- 27:06Speaker 1: the trip. And the first was he didn't want to
- 27:09Speaker 1: be paid. And the second was he didn't want to
- 27:11Speaker 1: be censored.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Let's take a listen.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Firstly, I said, yo, I do not want paying at
- 27:17Speaker 3: all because if you do pay me, sure, like I
- 27:20Speaker 3: do sponsorships on this podcast, but if we did that,
- 27:23Speaker 3: it's going to then feel like a paid endorsement and
- 27:27Speaker 3: endorsing something and just documenting it are two very different things.
- 27:31Speaker 3: And I don't want to be paid because I don't
- 27:34Speaker 3: want to endorse it. And I said, sure, you can
- 27:37Speaker 3: pay for my flights and accommodation on the agreement that
- 27:41Speaker 3: I will provide some coverage on this podcast and through
- 27:44Speaker 3: my socials, but you're going to have no control or
- 27:48Speaker 3: input in any of that. You don't get to dictate
- 27:51Speaker 3: or know what I'm going to say. I'm not going
- 27:53Speaker 3: to say it's great if I don't think it's great.
- 27:55Speaker 3: I said, my promise is I will come and I
- 27:59Speaker 3: will be honest about everything, how I find it, And
- 28:02Speaker 3: with the girls coming on this trip, I will just
- 28:04Speaker 3: discuss their journey from start to finish, landing in Bali
- 28:08Speaker 3: to leaving in Bali, rather than just posting what I
- 28:11Speaker 3: before and after picture that I assume most media are
- 28:15Speaker 3: going to do once they all post about doing this.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Now, as much as Josh wants to say this isn't
- 28:21Speaker 1: a paid trip, the fact that the brand paid for
- 28:24Speaker 1: his flights and luxury accommodation definitely muddies the water. I mean,
- 28:27Speaker 1: they might not be purchasing a set amount of ad
- 28:30Speaker 1: inventory on his podcast, but It's a contra trip. And,
- 28:33Speaker 1: you know, he's getting the brand name out there. He's
- 28:35Speaker 1: getting information about the procedure out there. It's a win
- 28:39Speaker 1: for this brand.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:40Speaker 1: But at the same time, he has told the brand
- 28:43Speaker 1: that they don't have any control or input of what
- 28:47Speaker 1: he's going to report. He's basically specified is going to
- 28:50Speaker 1: be honest in his reporting.
- 28:51Speaker 2: I think it's all above board.
- 28:53Speaker 1: But do you think it's possible to provide an unbiased
- 28:56Speaker 1: review if you're on a trip that the brand has
- 28:57Speaker 1: paid for? You might go, oh, I'm going into this
- 29:00Speaker 1: completely eyes wide open. But when you put up in
- 29:02Speaker 1: a luxury hotel and this company's treating you nicely and
- 29:05Speaker 1: you're talking to their spokespeople and, hey, you're getting a
- 29:08Speaker 1: little bit of a break in the pool.
- 29:09Speaker 2: To go swimming.
- 29:11Speaker 1: You unconsciously will be swayed to be positive about this company. Look,
- 29:15Speaker 1: I think he definitely should have paid for his own
- 29:17Speaker 1: airfares and accommodation because as you said, it does muddy
- 29:19Speaker 1: the water a little bit. But at the same time,
- 29:22Speaker 1: he's a ruthless entertainment journalist. From knowing these sorts of
- 29:26Speaker 1: people and working alongside them, they don't give a fuck
- 29:29Speaker 1: if this brand.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Has gifted them something. They want to get to the
- 29:32Speaker 2: heart of the story.
- 29:33Speaker 1: He would care more about his podcast being a success
- 29:37Speaker 1: than blowing smoke up these people's asses.
- 29:39Speaker 2: He just wants the story to be good. And in
- 29:42Speaker 2: order for the story to be good, he has to be.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Critical of it. I mean, I've listened to the four
- 29:46Speaker 1: part series now, and there definitely are parts where he
- 29:49Speaker 1: is critical of it, but he also does give a
- 29:52Speaker 1: lot of airtime for people pumping up the procedures. So
- 29:55Speaker 1: he interviewed Athena and she went on and on about
- 29:58Speaker 1: how oh, this procedure is so much less extreme than
- 30:02Speaker 1: getting your boobs done or Brazilian butt lift and it's
- 30:04Speaker 1: so safe. And, you know, she was really pumping it up,
- 30:07Speaker 1: talking about it. The interesting twist is that just this morning,
- 30:12Speaker 1: the fourth episode of the podcast dropped and Beck has
- 30:15Speaker 1: actually backed out of getting the surgery. Well, Josh actually
- 30:18Speaker 1: drove Beck to the hospital and he said originally his
- 30:21Speaker 1: plan was to actually go in with her when she
- 30:23Speaker 1: was getting all marked up and kind of document that
- 30:25Speaker 1: all for his podcast. but it seems like he's taken
- 30:28Speaker 1: a bit of a step back after this backlash. He
- 30:30Speaker 1: then made a comment though, like, oh, but I was
- 30:33Speaker 1: going to go back and enjoy a bingtang at the
- 30:35Speaker 1: pool and try and have a bit of a holiday
- 30:37Speaker 1: whilst I'm here, which kind of, I just wouldn't have
- 30:40Speaker 1: said that. I would have edited that out. But then
- 30:42Speaker 1: he went on this spiel about how he hasn't actually
- 30:45Speaker 1: been able to enjoy his time in Bali because he
- 30:47Speaker 1: gets so invested on what he's doing and he can't,
- 30:50Speaker 1: you know, enjoy having a break away from it. Now,
- 30:53Speaker 1: in the meantime, Beck has decided that she doesn't actually
- 30:56Speaker 1: want to get the surgery done. So he spoke to
- 30:58Speaker 1: her once she was back at the hotel and she
- 31:01Speaker 1: made this big point how.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Top-notch the hospital was. And he also agreed.
- 31:05Speaker 1: He said, oh, the hospitals are better in Bali than
- 31:08Speaker 1: they are in Sydney. And he was going on praising
- 31:12Speaker 1: how the doctors seem to take it all really seriously.
- 31:14Speaker 1: It's like, well, I'd hope so when they're doing cosmetic surgery.
- 31:18Speaker 1: And she said it had nothing to do with the hospital.
- 31:21Speaker 1: The brand hasn't put pressure on her. She said it
- 31:23Speaker 1: was a personal thing. She just felt like she wasn't
- 31:26Speaker 1: ready to do it.
- 31:27Speaker 2: So now she's.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Staying a week longer in Bali and potentially going to
- 31:31Speaker 1: change her mind. I actually think this is good for
- 31:33Speaker 1: his podcast, though, because I don't think that this glamorizes
- 31:36Speaker 1: it so much. It's saying that, oh, even though she's
- 31:38Speaker 1: desperate to change how she looks, she's backed out of
- 31:41Speaker 1: it because it seems like a really full on procedure. Yeah,
- 31:44Speaker 1: it was definitely a twist I didn't see coming. And
- 31:46Speaker 1: I think it was perfect timing for him because it
- 31:49Speaker 1: allowed him to then wrap the podcast up by saying, hey,
- 31:54Speaker 1: you need to be like Beck and think about whether
- 31:57Speaker 1: this procedure is right for you.
- 31:58Speaker 2: It was kind of like the perfect bow at the end.
- 32:01Speaker 1: I think ultimately we've got to remember that just because
- 32:03Speaker 1: a journalist is covering a story or interviewing someone, it
- 32:06Speaker 1: doesn't mean they actually back up the views of that
- 32:09Speaker 1: person because I think people get really confused. When I've
- 32:11Speaker 1: seen some journalists interviewing controversial figures, people jump to the conclusion, oh,
- 32:16Speaker 1: they must be the same political leaning as them or
- 32:19Speaker 1: they must agree with what they're saying. And it's like, no,
- 32:21Speaker 1: they're actually just interviewing this person because they're an interesting
- 32:24Speaker 1: subject to interview. And also as a journalist, you can
- 32:28Speaker 1: then challenge them on those ideals. Yeah, but I think
- 32:30Speaker 1: that's where it comes down to. Do you ask the
- 32:33Speaker 1: right questions and do you challenge them? And that's why
- 32:35Speaker 1: I think around the election, a lot of podcasters were
- 32:38Speaker 1: under fire because they kind of were getting swept up
- 32:42Speaker 1: in it and they weren't asking the tough questions. And
- 32:45Speaker 1: I mean, it is such a fine line between promoting
- 32:48Speaker 1: and amplifying something because to be completely honest, I didn't
- 32:52Speaker 1: know about rib recontouring before this podcast and before Beck
- 32:56Speaker 1: decided to do it. And I do wonder, would it
- 32:59Speaker 1: have got as much attention if these 10 influencers were going?
- 33:02Speaker 1: Because as you said, they weren't very well known and
- 33:06Speaker 1: Beck usually gets a lot of backlash.
- 33:07Speaker 2: So I'm kind of.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Leaning more towards the fact that I think a bit
- 33:12Speaker 1: of damage has been done in the sense that he's
- 33:13Speaker 1: actually promoted this surgery to a lot more people than
- 33:16Speaker 1: would have heard about it in the first place. Yeah,
- 33:18Speaker 1: but for instance, when Louis Theroux interviewed all of those
- 33:21Speaker 1: dickhead guys in the manosphere, is that him promoting the
- 33:25Speaker 1: manosphere or is that him showing the ridiculousness of it
- 33:29Speaker 1: and people at home are sitting there thinking.
- 33:30Speaker 2: This is fucked. Like for me, I'm listening to his
- 33:34Speaker 2: podcast and thinking, this sounds horrendous. This is something I
- 33:37Speaker 2: would never want to do.
- 33:39Speaker 1: For me, though, the timing is different because everyone was
- 33:41Speaker 1: aware of the manosphere, whereas this is like a new
- 33:44Speaker 1: procedure that he's almost shone light on. Like, oh, hey,
- 33:48Speaker 1: did you know that everyone has an issue with their waists?
- 33:51Speaker 1: And you can actually go to Bali and get it
- 33:52Speaker 1: done in these dangerous places.
- 33:55Speaker 2: This is not even legal in Australia. Like, it's kind
- 33:57Speaker 2: of putting ideas into people's heads. Yeah, but that means
- 33:59Speaker 2: you can't report on anything, anything new happening.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Like, at the end of the day, the consumer has
- 34:04Speaker 1: to have their own autonomy and their own brain and say, okay.
- 34:08Speaker 2: this is something I don't want to do. No, I
- 34:10Speaker 2: definitely agree with that.
- 34:11Speaker 1: But I think that the level of investigation wasn't there
- 34:14Speaker 1: for me, the level of questioning things and the fact
- 34:17Speaker 1: that his trip was actually covered by the brand. I
- 34:19Speaker 1: think that if he had gone independently, paid for his stuff,
- 34:23Speaker 1: it would have been a completely different story. But the
- 34:25Speaker 1: fact that the hotel was putting him up there and
- 34:27Speaker 1: it just seemed like a bit of.
- 34:28Speaker 2: A junket really with all these other Australian influences.
- 34:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Well, on that note, I think that is all we
