- 0:21Good morning, Alex. How are you doing? Doing well. Good. Good.
- 0:25Everyone, thanks so much for joining us.
- 0:28Last few weeks, we had the Defeating the Biblical Claims from Atheists,
- 0:33or the Biblical Claims of Contradictions from Atheists, and got a lot of buzz.
- 0:37So if you're still here or you're coming off of those episodes and seeing this
- 0:41one, we hope you stick around and check it out, because we've got some good
- 0:44topics today. Well, cool. Yeah.
- 0:47Reminder that I come to this cold. he hasn't talked to me
- 0:50anything about it and so this is one poor preacher that's
- 0:53coming cold to comments just like he would in a conversation
- 0:55yes yes and i would say that dawn has an
- 0:58incredible gift for these things and sometimes i
- 1:01don't realize it until i'm editing it you know in the post-production editing
- 1:05it and actually like seeing how quickly he comes up with things and sometimes
- 1:10i forget that like i'm bringing heavy topics to you that your mind Mine has
- 1:15to be just firing on all cylinders in order to just...
- 1:19It's the donut I have before. The donut? Yes. Is that the key? Yeah.
- 1:23Okay. But you're very graceful. Thank you.
- 1:26All right. So this one comes from someone that will remain anonymous.
- 1:31Okay. And it's about the dating life for Christians. Oh. And this would be a
- 1:37Christian man. Okay. Okay.
- 1:39Talking to him and to others. I do have some other close friends I've talked
- 1:42to about this before, too.
- 1:43But this person in particular kind of was like you know it doesn't
- 1:46seem like there's a lot of christian women around there around that
- 1:50are wanting this christian
- 1:53lifestyle so like where do you find them what are you looking for well the first
- 2:01where to find them okay you need to engage a christian community that has the
- 2:05same values you you have and i know you might go to to the same church you've
- 2:11always gone to and you say, well,
- 2:12I really take dated all those girls. I'm not really interested in any of those.
- 2:16Well, once in a while, maybe you shouldn't go on vacation and go to another
- 2:22city. What has another church that has the same values and start looking at those girls.
- 2:27I mean, here's a historical piece, maybe hysterical.
- 2:32I used to drive Amish and there would be groups of Amish go for a sing in a
- 2:39whole nother state so that they could, you know, integrate, mix up the Amish.
- 2:45Otherwise, you know, you're dating your cousin real fast.
- 2:48And so I would say, go to a church that has the same values,
- 2:53maybe in another town, maybe a joining town.
- 2:55So you're not going with the same ones you grew up in
- 2:58Sunday school with but that has the same values
- 3:01and and look at you know what god might
- 3:04be having there i know that when i was dating yeah
- 3:08i i looked at all the girls that in my own community i
- 3:11know their past and so i i
- 3:14waited till i was in seminary yeah and then
- 3:17found charlene and it yeah it's been great met
- 3:21her over pudding and it's been sweet ever since yep that that
- 3:25would be the context so you maybe not go
- 3:28to the bars i'm not sure that's the place to start meeting christian women
- 3:31the second piece is even
- 3:34if you're in meeting them in a church take
- 3:38time in your dating life to make sure they have
- 3:41the same values you do and and i'm not saying just about sex right that we're
- 3:46not we're gonna wait till we get married to have sex well that's really good
- 3:49But there's a whole lot of other issues that Christians have to be talking about
- 3:54when we talk about making a holy Christian marriage.
- 4:00And so that's part of it. Do that part of the dating.
- 4:03Take extra dates just for that. I include that in our counseling.
- 4:07When a couple comes to me for counseling, that's included.
- 4:11What are your values? What are your values? How do they mesh?
- 4:14How do they challenge each other? Because sometimes that's a sharp edge.
- 4:17And sometimes God puts two people together to sharpen them and make them better.
- 4:23We're actually better together than we were separate.
- 4:26And so that piece is important. What was the last part of that?
- 4:31Where would you meet them? And then where would you go to find and what should
- 4:35you be looking for in a wife? So qualities. Yeah, qualities.
- 4:39Okay. You're going to naturally, guys, I got to be really honest.
- 4:43Us, you're going to naturally look for a woman who reflects the qualities of your mother.
- 4:49Yeah. And what I'd say is make sure you meet her mother.
- 4:55Yeah. Because she's going to reflect the qualities of her mother. Yep.
- 4:58And if you can't get along with her mother, probably better stop dating. Mm-hmm.
- 5:03I, yep, that's really sharp. I probably said that too tersely.
- 5:08Yeah. But. No, no, no. I don't think, I think that's, I think that's very valuable.
- 5:11So, like, I mean, like what I would say is, you know, if something is like having a lot
- 5:16of kids is important to you maybe you would look to
- 5:19see how a a woman would
- 5:22be interacting with many kids or something
- 5:25like yeah how are they loving the children yeah yeah i mean sometimes it goes
- 5:30beyond the surface of just asking you know like oh how many kids do you want
- 5:33or or you know what do you think about you know this verse in the bible or something
- 5:37like that or yeah there's so many you have to kind of study to see how the interactions
- 5:43happen you know i would say like Like with men,
- 5:45like how do they treat their mother is a very good indicator too. It is. Yeah.
- 5:51Because I know that I pick on my mom a little bit. Well, just a little bit.
- 5:55And that's kind of our love language, being a little ornery to each other every once in a while.
- 6:00Sometimes it gets carried away on my part, especially in the pool setting.
- 6:04I'll squirt her. And I found that my wife does not really care for those kind
- 6:09of little ornery things to do to her. So that was a learning experience is making
- 6:13sure that I knew not to do that.
- 6:15Yeah. The first 12 years of marriage is a very deep learning.
- 6:19Oh, yeah. You learn. Uh-huh.
- 6:21And then when your kids get to be teenagers, there's a whole new area of learning. Oh, yeah.
- 6:26That's what I keep hearing. Yeah. Is I ask, you know, I'm like,
- 6:29hey, when do these kids start remembering like anything?
- 6:31And I ask someone, they're like, oh, that's not a big deal. Wait till they get
- 6:35this age. Then they don't say anything at all.
- 6:38Right. So yeah, let them talk now because you'll have peace when they're high school.
- 6:43Well, certain kinds of peace you'll have when they're in high school. Yeah.
- 6:47It's a whole different, it's a whole different ball game. Yeah,
- 6:49absolutely. There's never less challenges, right?
- 6:52So there's a, I've got a few more kind of two more segments of this question.
- 6:57So the first two questions were, where should Christian men go to find a wife?
- 7:01And what should they be looking for in a wife?
- 7:04And the next part is like, is this the proper question?
- 7:08Are these the proper questions? Or should we be asking, what should a man be
- 7:12doing to make him or make himself acceptable or make himself right for being a husband?
- 7:20And that I would go to, are you a disciple of Jesus Christ?
- 7:25Are you reflecting our Savior in your life and the way you live?
- 7:31And if you can find a godly man or a godly group of men to be a part of,
- 7:37let them, I mean, we as guys, we sharpen each other.
- 7:41If given the opportunity to be in the midst of scripture and conversation with
- 7:46each other, we sharpen each other. And that's a great thing.
- 7:50So find you a Christian man that you respect.
- 7:55Respect his values, the way he lives, the way he conducts his business,
- 7:59the way he treats his life, the wife, the way he treats his family.
- 8:03Find a guy that you can see those things that you want to be as a Christian man.
- 8:09And follow him, ask him questions, have coffee with him, read the Bible with
- 8:15him, ask these kind of questions to him, and then live through the responses with him.
- 8:22We have failed to do good Christian discipleship. Oh, yeah.
- 8:28And this is one of those areas that you're going to be attractive to a Christian
- 8:35woman living out your Christian life. Yep.
- 8:39And hopefully at the end of this, we'll put some forth some like,
- 8:41here's one, two, and three. Here's the things you got to do to pursue.
- 8:46I jotted some things down. So hopefully we'll be able to hit them off.
- 8:50You got the question ahead of me. So that's fine. That's yeah.
- 8:53I need quite a bit of time to come up with just even a fraction of what Don can do on the spot.
- 8:58All right. So the next one, the next part of this is.
- 9:03It talks about the verse in Ephesians, you know, how it tells,
- 9:06you know, the husbands or wives be submissive to your husband.
- 9:12Ephesians 520. So it's the submissiveness part. We've talked a lot about this.
- 9:15This person was concerned that there aren't any submissive women left in the dating pool.
- 9:21Oh this is a fun this was a fun yeah issue
- 9:25because i feel like there's so much
- 9:28wrapped around this topic that's easy to miss and it's easy to then focus on
- 9:32the women for this quality that you think that is is is dire oh right yeah and
- 9:39if you walk into any relationship and you're trying to test to see you know
- 9:43is this going to work out and you're like say first thing off the bat bless you say,
- 9:47oh, are you a submissive woman? Or would you be a submissive wife?
- 9:51That might not be the first one to start with. I wouldn't go there first, for sure.
- 9:55But I also go back here and say, okay, so do you know what submissive means
- 10:00according to the biblical definition?
- 10:03And I note that in verse 21, it says, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
- 10:10Then it goes in wives submit right and
- 10:13that word for submit is not will you
- 10:15please bow down to me right that is
- 10:18not what is being said here it's it's aligning ourselves in a way under christ
- 10:25with christ as lord where is the man in that in that it's a battle term right
- 10:32it's an alignment term it's It's not so much, I submit to your every whim.
- 10:39It is, I align myself under you or with you.
- 10:45So when it says, wives, submit to your husbands, align yourselves to your husbands
- 10:49as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head
- 10:55of the church, his body, for which he is Savior.
- 10:58And so it's an alignment under Christ is what you need to be.
- 11:02That's why it's important as a man to have your Christian discipleship in place
- 11:08and know where you're submitting your time, your life, your energy in your discipleship to Christ.
- 11:16Then you can find, I mean, I don't think you're going to have to,
- 11:20I'm sorry, maybe I'm over optimistic and it's been years and years since I've been on the market.
- 11:27I think men who live out these values will be so attractive in the Christian circles.
- 11:35I mean, I think girls are asking these same questions, guys.
- 11:39If you live out your Christian discipleship, you will be so attractive,
- 11:43you may have to do a selection process.
- 11:47Think about it. if you want a godly woman someone who is going to live by biblical principles,
- 11:55they're they're doing the same thing saying there's no godly man out here and
- 11:59i feel like this was one of the parts of this where i thought you know you're
- 12:03focusing a lot on this one thing.
- 12:06And maybe we should be focusing on how to make it so that you're the godly husband material right Right.
- 12:14So you're going to be the one that is the highly desired, because there might
- 12:18be a lot of women out there saying, there's no godly man out here.
- 12:20That's true. None of them are following Christ. They are. I can vouch for that.
- 12:23You can vouch for that. Good. And what I say is then the church is sort of not
- 12:28done well at cultivating male discipleship. Yeah.
- 12:32And we just need to gain some groundwork.
- 12:36Women's ministries have happened quite a bit. I mean, there's all sorts of women's
- 12:40studies out there, and women are much more apt to get together quickly and put
- 12:45the Bible study together than a group of men are, because men are just way too busy.
- 12:50Right. And so many times they put that off until they're retired,
- 12:53and then they have more time.
- 12:54Mm Where you find someone that has those values and you ask them questions like
- 13:09this and allow them to live into you and you into them.
- 13:13Because, you know, as an older guy who meets with young fellas,
- 13:16it adds a lot of life to me. Good.
- 13:19To be able to talk about life and what it is like now.
- 13:22And it's educational to me. us old guys because we
- 13:25don't realize what these young people are
- 13:28going through right right and i think you know a lot
- 13:31of the problems or the issues or complaints about the
- 13:34dating pool or married life or a thousand
- 13:37years old but some of them are newer some of them are newer yeah and i just
- 13:40i i have this context in that there's about eight guys that i meet with every
- 13:46week that are between 18 and 22 and i'm learning a great deal oh yeah about
- 13:52these kind of things yeah yeah.
- 13:56In that verse in Ephesians, when it talks about Christ being the head of the
- 14:02church and that the husband is supposed to be underneath that,
- 14:05is that the hierarchy? God, Christ, man?
- 14:08Right. All right. The thing is, God is in Christ, and so that trinity is there.
- 14:13I was trying to piece it in with the verse. And this isn't the only place that Paul talks about it.
- 14:17Right. Because he talks about it in 1 Corinthians 11 and chapter 12.
- 14:23And so there's a hierarchy that's in
- 14:26the body even yeah i mean the the
- 14:30but the hands aren't more important than the feet and all those
- 14:33things but you know i sure have a heart going in the midst of that right so
- 14:37each each of us have different gifts and abilities working within the whole
- 14:43same with the husband and the wife you lend each other right the The strengths that you have.
- 14:51Yeah. And so you're better together than you would have been separately.
- 14:55So this alignment term that's used that we have rendered in the English as submit
- 15:02is more of how do we get the most out of us?
- 15:07Right. Yeah. How are we better together?
- 15:11That's why it's a military term. they use that
- 15:14military setup so they
- 15:17are more efficient and a better value
- 15:20so it's that same thing that we want to carry into marriage and what I find
- 15:24fascinating about this passage you know it is a little on the surface a little
- 15:31bit simple and it's a very clear I think term you know if you look at is it
- 15:37submissive or is it alignment.
- 15:41I heard Tim Keller talk about this once where he said that, you know, why is it like that?
- 15:45It's because no one has the right to tell you exactly what that means for your relationship.
- 15:51The Bible doesn't really even go into it except for just on this one part.
- 15:55So you got male and female, you figure out where those qualities align,
- 16:01where your culture, your upbringing, where those strengths and weaknesses and
- 16:04gifts, where those fit in.
- 16:06And I said cultural, but also So, like, what gifts does God give to you to bring
- 16:10to this relationship? Right.
- 16:12To give. Right. Right. Because if we're taken, that doesn't make sense.
- 16:15So, I just thought that was very interesting. It's like, it's just you two.
- 16:18Don't look to outside sources to figure out what it means for your relationship. Right.
- 16:23But also don't be afraid to seek counseling or anything like that, obviously, but true.
- 16:28There's also another piece that Paul weaves in here that I'd like to,
- 16:31with the submit piece, I also want to put in here the fact that husbands are to love their wives.
- 16:38As they love their own bodies. Love is a language that women understand.
- 16:43They know that they're loved if they're agape. In other words,
- 16:48if you're willing to sacrifice for them, if you're willing to give up yourself
- 16:52for them, they feel loved and cared for.
- 16:55That is a language that's universal among women.
- 16:58Yeah. The second piece is when it says, and men, and it says then they're to
- 17:05respect their own husbands. investments.
- 17:08In verse 33, however, each one of you must love his wife as he loves himself,
- 17:12and the wife must respect her husband.
- 17:16Respect is one of those things that we as men understand. I mean,
- 17:20cuddling does a certain amount for us.
- 17:23Sure. And we understand when people have gone to dire ends to help us.
- 17:29But when they respect us, that's what we guys need.
- 17:33Right. And that makes a lot of difference. So if you're living a good,
- 17:40solid Christian life and are not respected, then you have to ask two questions.
- 17:47Am I not worthy of that respect?
- 17:50Or is this person, this woman, just not willing to give me that respect? Right.
- 17:55And I've found over the course of time, respect is one.
- 17:59And so that it's not going to be something that they bring in a box and lay
- 18:03in front of you. Right. And you just have it without cause.
- 18:07But it's like any place else in our life. Respect is one by how we live with others. Yeah.
- 18:15And it is same thing that's why we don't get
- 18:18married in six weeks right right you you
- 18:21you have to have a dating period long enough where she
- 18:25understands she's loved and you as
- 18:28a guy understand you're respected right and you
- 18:31have to have the actual conversations too because sometimes
- 18:34you get caught up in just the the new love
- 18:38the romance the sparks flying and stuff
- 18:40but you gotta have the
- 18:44conversations right i mean huge red
- 18:47flag if one of you is not comfortable having difficult conversations why not
- 18:51oh boy you got to be able to figure that stuff out find somebody you can communicate
- 18:56with yeah yeah and not to say that those things can't develop over time but
- 19:01make sure that that person knows that they need to develop over time you bring up
- 19:05a good part i mean if we don't trust each other to have those conversations
- 19:11then maybe we just don't trust each other enough right and so that you brought up a good point right.
- 19:18There's a little bit to it too where it's like you know don't talk about politics
- 19:22at thanksgiving because politics are divisive but you should be able to talk
- 19:27politics with your projective spouse Oh yeah.
- 19:30In a rational way. And even I've got a couple of couples that are radically
- 19:36different politically, but because they love and respect each other,
- 19:41they can have those difficult conversations.
- 19:44What's interesting is how creative and productive in informing each other they are. Yeah.
- 19:53And so they are much better together, even if they're opposites because they
- 19:57respect each other enough to know, well, there is a point to that position. Right.
- 20:02And there's a point to that position. Right. Okay.
- 20:07Yeah, you definitely wouldn't want to, with anybody even, especially a spouse
- 20:10or projected partner, you wouldn't want to label them as this because they voted
- 20:14for this person. Figure out why. Right.
- 20:17My wife and I don't see the same as far as for politically.
- 20:22And that used to really drive me nuts. But once I figured out why she had these
- 20:30views, I realized that it was all just out of love and care.
- 20:34And the emotional attached
- 20:37things to to that view right and and
- 20:41she didn't agree with all the things from whatever side
- 20:44you know so it's it's figuring those things out because sometimes you
- 20:47know politics obviously wants us to say you know the left or the right
- 20:50whichever side you're on the other side's definitely an enemy and they're a
- 20:54danger to society and if we keep trusting them it's all going to heck in a handbasket
- 20:59right but the understanding piece has got to be got to be there too amen and
- 21:04over the course of time it's that middle piece that needs to be the overarching.
- 21:11Struggles start because we can divide we
- 21:14can divide alliances and so that that isn't always the best right but we've
- 21:20got to flush out the truth and that's usually what's done in the middle okay
- 21:24and so that that's what carly contributes to this broadcast what's that your
- 21:30heart oh yeah Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:32Yeah. There's, she's got a, just an incredible capacity to see that side, right? Yeah.
- 21:39Praise the Lord. God bless you, Carly. Where I'm all just like,
- 21:43you know, it's, it's logic.
- 21:45Let's work the logic. You know, if they can't, if they can't,
- 21:49if they're unwilling to work, then they shouldn't eat.
- 21:52See it right here in the Bible. Right here in the Bible. Yeah. We've got one of those.
- 21:56Yeah. Paul talks about it. okay so so let's go over a few i got a list right
- 22:03so what do you got to do for finding a spouse this is men this is women what's
- 22:09number one what do you got to do.
- 22:12Mix among the people who have the same values you do. Yeah. Okay.
- 22:16That way you've got the pool to start looking at. I was going to say make God the center of your life.
- 22:22Make God the center of your life. Well, I was assuming it was already there.
- 22:25Okay. So we're hoping that's that part.
- 22:26Okay. Okay. So let's make that number one. And number two is to get your pool of people. Right.
- 22:31That reflect the same values. Right. And don't overlook that if someone's a
- 22:36friend that they're not wife material. Because if you marry a friend, that's a great thing.
- 22:43In fact, I know some people who have been friends.
- 22:46They actually met each other freshman year of high school. We're very, very good friends.
- 22:52Friends all through high school, all through their college years, and then got married.
- 22:56I mean, it's like having an eight-year dating romance.
- 23:01They just figured it out. They're just like, at some point, they're just like, we're fun together.
- 23:05We like to hang out. Why don't we just. Hang out forever. Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:09And that's cool very cool couples okay yeah and
- 23:13say like pray for wisdom pray for wisdom well i was gonna put our discipleship
- 23:18in there disciple okay make sure you know even if you're in this pool of people
- 23:21make sure you've got your discipleship lined up make sure you're mentored and
- 23:26and growing in christ right and then then start to get your eyes open,
- 23:33conversations don't eliminate your friends right that are happening to the other sex yeah Mm-hmm.
- 23:40Prayer. Why didn't I put that in earlier? Because you're going to need some
- 23:45of that. You're going to need a lot of prayer, dude. Yeah, you are. Yeah.
- 23:48Dude and dudette. You do the prayer piece. Might make it that part of your God
- 23:53piece at the very beginning.
- 23:55Yeah. There was a group of women, I remember, in my past church who were working
- 24:02with their toddlers. So it was sort of like a mops program.
- 24:05Oh, yeah, yeah. And there was about five women who had toddlers all the same age.
- 24:10And so they committed themselves to pray for the upcoming spouses for their children.
- 24:18And they continued to pray year after year and they'd meet year after year. And these women prayed.
- 24:24And so when the weddings came around, they went to the weddings. Wow.
- 24:28You know, proclaiming God's providence in providing this spouse.
- 24:33That's really cool. Yeah.
- 24:35So pray into it. Ask your parents to pray into it. Oh, yeah.
- 24:39And make it a process that God is going to bless with His Holy Spirit.
- 24:44Yeah. I find that part in James.
- 24:47That's probably the most quoted Bible verse we have on here,
- 24:50but in verse five it says, if any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,
- 24:53who gives generously to all without finding faults, and ask knowing it will be given.
- 24:59Right? Because that's an important thing that you
- 25:02also need to be able to carry into a marriage relationship is that
- 25:04trust piece that trust you got to be able to trust god if
- 25:07you can't trust god then it's a test how can you trust anybody
- 25:10else right so if you're asking for wisdom seeing if god
- 25:13is actually going to provide this time if you do that same thing to your spouse
- 25:17yeah i'm not going to say they can tell and something bad's going to happen
- 25:21but that attitude is is not going to yield good fruit no no same way with god
- 25:27right okay this is a test right nobody likes a test no No, no, no.
- 25:32Let's see if you're a good spouse. Let's see if you do actually love me.
- 25:36Test to see. I'm going to check you out. Yeah. Oh, that's.
- 25:40In fact, don't go into church saying, I'm going to check out all the chicks here. Yeah.
- 25:47I came to. I actually had a guy do that at church.
- 25:51Oh, my God. I came here, and he had come from a neighboring city,
- 25:54and he, I came to your church because I understand there's women eligible to be married.
- 25:59Oh, boy. And I thought, oh, dude, you're starting about this all wrong.
- 26:05Oh, man. He didn't go away with anybody from our church. What do you know? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 26:13I think step three I had written down. It's like, don't be passive.
- 26:16But I think we cover a little bit about that just going in.
- 26:19Right? Yeah. Yeah. I'm sorry. I wasn't looking at your notes as to what was
- 26:23one, two, and three. These are just scribbles. But I like make God the center.
- 26:26I like that. Mm-hmm. Pray for your wisdom. I like that. that's very good yep
- 26:31yeah don't be passive yeah mm-hmm.
- 26:35So, yeah, I think we covered all of them. I say some like, you know,
- 26:39as far as like some tips is what you're doing in your life, you know,
- 26:42go on, make the first part of your day productive.
- 26:45You know, don't be someone who sits in his idol and that's not going to help you out.
- 26:50Don't look at TikTok or any of those videos that are just talking about what's
- 26:55wrong with women these days.
- 26:57Don't let that rot your brain. Right. I mean, if anything, spend more time in
- 27:02silence or something like that instead. And that is hard. I know, but.
- 27:06And the, you know, listening prayer. Yeah. Take time in your prayer life to give God time to talk.
- 27:14Silence. Yeah. Set in silence. Yeah. It's amazing what God will say in those moments. Oh, yeah.
- 27:22That's absolutely true. Yeah. So I think that wraps up our day.
- 27:26John, will you pray us out? I can do that.
- 27:28All right. Heavenly Father, we thank you for these questions.
- 27:30We thank you for our listeners. We thank you, Lord, that we can be a part of
- 27:33their day by listening to this broadcast.
- 27:36Heavenly Father, we do pray that you would continue to guide and bless all Christians
- 27:40at this time, that you would lead us in ways that honor and glorify you,
- 27:44and I especially raise up those who are looking for their life partner.
- 27:49Lord, move among us. Guide us
- 27:51ever closer to you. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. Amen.
- 27:56Thanks, everyone, for joining us. Hopefully, you can pass this along to someone
- 28:00who is in the dating pool looking around.
- 28:03And we're open to more questions about it. Yeah, absolutely.
- 28:07It is a tricky thing to do, and just don't get discouraged. Right.
- 28:11Have fun. God's got the right relationships for us. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:16And even it might be His will for us to be single. Yeah, that's also true.
- 28:21And that's got to be part of it, too.
- 28:23That's true. That's true. So I guess thanks, everyone, for joining us,
- 28:26and we will see you all next week. Lord.
