- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with coach Jim Moore. Individual game tickets for
- 0:04Speaker 1: the six remaining Yukon football home games. That's right, six
- 0:07Speaker 1: more can be purchased at yukontickets dot com. Yukon Huskies Football,
- 0:12Speaker 1: get into the game, and we're back with the coach.
- 0:15Speaker 1: More that, we've been talking a lot of offense. Obviously,
- 0:17Speaker 1: when you put sixty three points on the board, you're
- 0:20Speaker 1: gonna talk offense. But you gave up a couple touchdowns
- 0:23Speaker 1: big plays against Merrimack. I know the game was on
- 0:26Speaker 1: a hand, I mean, it's human nature. Guys might have
- 0:29Speaker 1: relaxed a little bit. I don't know, second third string
- 0:32Speaker 1: guys playing. Given all that, as you looked at the
- 0:35Speaker 1: defensive performance the other day, obviously first half pretty much
- 0:41Speaker 1: every time Merrimack had the ball, they couldn't do much,
- 0:44Speaker 1: but they ended up with seven big plays coach in
- 0:47Speaker 1: the game, you know, for about two hundred and sixteen
- 0:50Speaker 1: yards most of their offense. So obviously big plays are
- 0:54Speaker 1: an emphasis this week defensively for you.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it starts with it's really three things.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It's it's number one, doing your job on a consistent basis,
- 1:05Speaker 2: being consistent and doing what you're supposed to do. So
- 1:08Speaker 2: you're accountable to your teammate and your teammate can trust
- 1:10Speaker 2: it you're going to be there so that they can
- 1:12Speaker 2: do their job. I mean, that's what that's what defense
- 1:15Speaker 2: starts with, is being accountable to doing your job so
- 1:18Speaker 2: your trustworthy and your teammates can trust you. And then
- 1:22Speaker 2: number two, it's it's about the way you enter the
- 1:25Speaker 2: play and leverage the football once the ball has been
- 1:29Speaker 2: declared where it's going, and maintaining the proper leverage inside
- 1:34Speaker 2: or outside or down the middle of the ball. And
- 1:37Speaker 2: then it's about tackling. And we did not do a
- 1:40Speaker 2: good job early of consistently doing our job. We did
- 1:44Speaker 2: not do a good enough job of consistently maintaining leverage,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and we did not do a job of consistently tackling,
- 1:52Speaker 2: especially in space. And we are putting tremendous emphasis on
- 1:57Speaker 2: those things we always have that we're even doubling down
- 2:00Speaker 2: because those are the three things that are holding us
- 2:02Speaker 2: back from on defense. And they are all controllables, they
- 2:05Speaker 2: are all things that we can control. We can coach
- 2:07Speaker 2: them better, and we can execute them better, and we
- 2:10Speaker 2: can practice the harder and we are going to do
- 2:14Speaker 2: that but the big plays like we talked about on offense.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I mean, god, dang, they give you life, right, they
- 2:19Speaker 2: give you a hope. Chunk is chunks of yardage that
- 2:22Speaker 2: you don't have to just fight for every play. You've
- 2:26Speaker 2: got to win the explosive RACI explosive play ratio and
- 2:30Speaker 2: you've got to win the turnover ratio if you want
- 2:32Speaker 2: to win football games consistently. And so we've got to
- 2:34Speaker 2: get a handle on that. On defense, it's been addressed.
- 2:37Speaker 2: The players understand the importance of it. The coaches are
- 2:40Speaker 2: going to work them harder on it. We're going to
- 2:42Speaker 2: re emphasize it, and it's something we've got to get
- 2:46Speaker 2: better on.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I think you, if I remember this right, in your
- 2:48Speaker 1: press conference tuesday, you mentioned shoulder pads tack shoulder pad tackling.
- 2:54Speaker 1: They correct me if I'm wrong on this. And I
- 2:56Speaker 1: was trying to understand it because I actually played defensive
- 2:59Speaker 1: bag of one time in my past life, and I
- 3:03Speaker 1: always thought of my head being in the middle of
- 3:05Speaker 1: a tackle. But explain that to me. You said that
- 3:09Speaker 1: you know we're making too many shoulder pad tackles.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Well, I meant not bringing our arms like trying to
- 3:16Speaker 2: knock a guy down instead of tackling them. Yes, you know,
- 3:19Speaker 2: there's too many players where guys are laying out and
- 3:21Speaker 2: not bringing their arms. You got to if you're a
- 3:23Speaker 2: football player, God gave the arms so that you could tackle.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And we weren't using our arms. We weren't grabbing cloths,
- 3:30Speaker 2: squeezing our elbows, put our opening up our chest and
- 3:32Speaker 2: putting our chest on people and and rolling our hips
- 3:35Speaker 2: and driving our feet and trying to plant them in
- 3:37Speaker 2: the ground. Now, you don't talk about the head and
- 3:40Speaker 2: tackling except other than you know, put it on one
- 3:43Speaker 2: side or the other, you know, because we're trying to
- 3:46Speaker 2: take the head out of out of football contact out
- 3:48Speaker 2: as much as we can for player safety. But uh, now,
- 3:53Speaker 2: you got to be willing to open up your chest,
- 3:54Speaker 2: man and run through somebody. I mean, that's what you
- 3:57Speaker 2: got to be willing to do to play great defense
- 3:59Speaker 2: and be a great defen player. And we've got to
- 4:02Speaker 2: be better at that. And it's not that our guys
- 4:06Speaker 2: are afraid to do it, because they're not, because they're
- 4:08Speaker 2: tremendously courageous and tremendously tough. We just have to we
- 4:12Speaker 2: have to emphasize more and we're than we are.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting that you watching the Monday night football game,
- 4:19Speaker 1: we're talking about tackling here, the Pros tackled. I mean
- 4:24Speaker 1: people say, well, they you know, they don't tackle like
- 4:26Speaker 1: they used to, blah blah blah. I'm telling you, I
- 4:29Speaker 1: thought the Jets, who gave up a lot of yardige
- 4:31Speaker 1: and all that stuff, they tackled pretty well against the
- 4:33Speaker 1: forty nine ers, and the forty nine ers defense was
- 4:36Speaker 1: pretty darn good at making, you know, a hit and
- 4:38Speaker 1: bringing guys down without extra yardies. I mean, the Pros
- 4:41Speaker 1: really have that kind of aspect down.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Well, if you can't tackle in the NFL, you're not
- 4:47Speaker 2: going to be in the NFL. You're going to be
- 4:49Speaker 2: bagging groceries or running your own business or you know,
- 4:52Speaker 2: doing whatever your degree in college prepared you to do.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But you're not going to be playing in the NFL.
- 4:58Speaker 2: There's no room for guys that don't. It's it's mandatory.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And uh it's mandatory ear too. You know. It's just
- 5:05Speaker 2: that we can't cut guys. You know, in the NFL,
- 5:08Speaker 2: you don't tackle, your ass is getting cut. It isn't
- 5:11Speaker 2: like you used to be because they're trying to take
- 5:13Speaker 2: the head out of it and emphasize player safety, but
- 5:15Speaker 2: they're still violent. They still try to break and inflict pain.
- 5:19Speaker 2: They have great body control, great understanding of leverage and
- 5:23Speaker 2: play intry. They have great athleticism, and while they respect
- 5:28Speaker 2: the hell out of each other as players, they know
- 5:30Speaker 2: that their ability to put food on the table relies
- 5:33Speaker 2: on them being able to tackle and on the other side,
- 5:36Speaker 2: avoid a tackle or break a tackle.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Yeah. The foot it's amazing the foot speed of the
- 5:42Speaker 1: of the NFL football players.
- 5:43Speaker 2: People don't even have a clue. Oh my goodness, the
- 5:47Speaker 2: difference in the level of ability between college and the pros.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Like I get a kick out of these people that say, well,
- 5:52Speaker 2: a couple of years ago, if you took Alabama and
- 5:54Speaker 2: put them on the field with I think it was
- 5:56Speaker 2: the Cleveland Browns at the time, the Bama would be Cleveland.
- 5:59Speaker 2: There's there's absolutely positively no shot of that.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Shot, there's levels, and the level between college and pros
- 6:08Speaker 2: is outrageously different.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, there's no doubt about it. Well, we'll looking forward
- 6:14Speaker 1: to Duke in yukon six o'clock down in Durham and
- 6:18Speaker 1: we'll have the pre game at four thirty. Thanks to
- 6:19Speaker 1: coach Jim Morra and we'll be back. Bob Joyce will
- 6:23Speaker 1: join us with a couple interviews with Cam Chadwick and
- 6:26Speaker 1: Alex Hunting as we continue on the Yukon Football Coaches
