- 0:00Speaker 1: I don't think that I'm necessarily a super this, oh god,
- 0:04Speaker 1: the sentence I'm about to say, thirsty person. I also,
- 0:09Speaker 1: during a regular day, I feel as though I'm awful
- 0:12Speaker 1: at drinking water, but somehow still manage to get by.
- 0:15Speaker 1: But you cannot escape when you need hydration and you're
- 0:20Speaker 1: on the move. So definitely, definitely bring more water, more
- 0:24Speaker 1: fluids than you think that you need. Hey, Hurdler's Emily
- 0:41Speaker 1: a body bringing you another installment of Hurdle Moment from Hurdle.
- 0:46Speaker 1: It's a good week. I'm finally taking some much needed
- 0:51Speaker 1: R and R from New York. Still love it, though
- 0:53Speaker 1: not going anywhere for a long time. I'm up in
- 0:57Speaker 1: Rhode Island taking a breather and massive amounts of space,
- 1:03Speaker 1: so much space. Also things like Dell's frozen lemonade and
- 1:08Speaker 1: being able to run through sprinklers and go to the
- 1:11Speaker 1: beach and drive a car. It's amazing, just the small,
- 1:16Speaker 1: small joys that you can experience these days. Anyway, Hurtle Moment,
- 1:21Speaker 1: I was actually really excited and impressed with the feedback
- 1:27Speaker 1: that I got from my first episode talking about the
- 1:31Speaker 1: lessons that I learned in my first couple months as
- 1:34Speaker 1: a new Cyclist, and so today I'm bringing you a
- 1:37Speaker 1: few more. It's so fun when you pick up a
- 1:39Speaker 1: new hobby, you know you're constantly constantly learning. And I'd
- 1:42Speaker 1: actually argue that no matter what it is that you're doing,
- 1:45Speaker 1: you're constantly constantly learning. Heck, on the activity front, I've
- 1:49Speaker 1: been running for almost twelve years now, and I still
- 1:53Speaker 1: feel like I'm learning new lessons all of the time.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So New Cyclists Lessons. It was a popular episode. I'm
- 2:01Speaker 1: bringing you back some more intel as I continue to
- 2:05Speaker 1: investigate this new hobby of mine. And these are the
- 2:09Speaker 1: things that whether or not you think you're going to
- 2:12Speaker 1: be someone that is cycling regularly, if you're debating picking
- 2:16Speaker 1: up cycling altogether, if you just want to know more
- 2:19Speaker 1: about this way of being active, these are the tips
- 2:23Speaker 1: and the tricks that you might not find anywhere else.
- 2:27Speaker 1: In other words, these are the things that maybe I
- 2:30Speaker 1: wish someone would have told me right off the bat.
- 2:33Speaker 1: If you like what you're listening to today, please please, please,
- 2:37Speaker 1: pretty please head on into the iTunes store and rate
- 2:40Speaker 1: and review the show. Every week the ratings and reviews,
- 2:43Speaker 1: the numbers are going up there. My personal goal is
- 2:47Speaker 1: by the end of August to get to one thousand.
- 2:50Speaker 1: We're right around or just shy of eight hundred right now,
- 2:53Speaker 1: so head on in there, rate and review the show. Also,
- 2:56Speaker 1: as you're listening today, share this episode with a friend
- 2:59Speaker 1: and also share it on your social media. Make sure
- 3:02Speaker 1: to tag me over at Emily Body and at Hurdle Podcast.
- 3:07Speaker 1: If you have a Hurdle moment of your own to share,
- 3:09Speaker 1: or you just want to say hi, feel free to
- 3:11Speaker 1: reach out to me. It's Emily at Hurdle dot us.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And with that, let's get to hurdling. You know, I
- 3:22Speaker 1: kind of assumed that once I got a bicycle, I
- 3:26Speaker 1: would be able just to ride anywhere and everywhere. And
- 3:29Speaker 1: it's kind of funny, right because I get so many
- 3:32Speaker 1: messages asking me for input on the best way to
- 3:36Speaker 1: ride around an urban city, being that I am a
- 3:40Speaker 1: New Yorker. But let me tell you the first piece
- 3:46Speaker 1: of input I have to offer this week, as the
- 3:50Speaker 1: lessons from a new cyclist continue, would be that not
- 3:54Speaker 1: every single city is going to be cycling friendly. So,
- 3:59Speaker 1: as I mentioned, I'm up in Rhode Island taking some
- 4:01Speaker 1: time away from New York, and I decided to ride
- 4:04Speaker 1: from my friend's small town near Providence down to Newport,
- 4:09Speaker 1: and in that process I learned real quick that not
- 4:13Speaker 1: all roads are going to be super friendly for cyclists,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and in fact, a lot of cars might not want
- 4:19Speaker 1: you around, which actually made me appreciate just how cycling
- 4:23Speaker 1: friendly New York really is. I mean, there's definitely a
- 4:27Speaker 1: lot of room to grow in New York. I would
- 4:29Speaker 1: love to see more specific dedicated bike lanes, but out
- 4:34Speaker 1: here in the suburbs, a majority of that ride that
- 4:36Speaker 1: I took today didn't have bike lanes at all. I
- 4:39Speaker 1: would say literally the only place where there were dedicated
- 4:43Speaker 1: bike lanes happened to be in Newport itself. So definitely
- 4:48Speaker 1: something to keep in mind if you are going to
- 4:50Speaker 1: be riding around and not on trails or bike paths,
- 4:54Speaker 1: is that are the roads that you want to take
- 4:57Speaker 1: to go from point A to point B? Are they
- 4:59Speaker 1: bike friendly? Lessen Number two to add to the mix,
- 5:03Speaker 1: pockets and shorts are clutch. I've actually been really surprised
- 5:07Speaker 1: as I've tried out new cycling shorts that it is
- 5:11Speaker 1: increasingly hard to find pairs that have both the padding,
- 5:15Speaker 1: which is essential. Do not think that you are above
- 5:19Speaker 1: wearing something that feels like an adult diaper because you
- 5:22Speaker 1: are not. It is necessary, especially if you want to
- 5:24Speaker 1: be out there for a long time. But the pockets,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I can't believe how hard it is to find good
- 5:29Speaker 1: cycling shorts with pockets. I swear by this pair from Lululemon,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and I'll put a link in the show notes to those,
- 5:37Speaker 1: as well as anything else I mentioned in this episode.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I heard Rafa has a great pair that are cargo
- 5:44Speaker 1: style with pockets. But if you are listening and you
- 5:47Speaker 1: have a suggestion for great cargo style cycling shorts, I
- 5:51Speaker 1: am all ears. It's super helpful to be able to
- 5:53Speaker 1: reach down and easily grab something like a packet of gummies,
- 5:58Speaker 1: or have a place to store your cell phone if
- 6:01Speaker 1: you're not putting it on some sort of holder on
- 6:04Speaker 1: your bicycle. Also, important things you can staus in there
- 6:07Speaker 1: include your keys or sunscreen, and we'll talk about sunscreen
- 6:11Speaker 1: in just a minute. So, yes, pockets and shorts are clutch.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Of course, you can also have pockets in your jersey,
- 6:18Speaker 1: but sometimes I feel like reaching behind you can feel
- 6:20Speaker 1: a little bit tedious if those pockets happen to be
- 6:23Speaker 1: on the back side. So I'm a big fan of
- 6:26Speaker 1: this cargo style short next lesson, bring more water than
- 6:31Speaker 1: you think you need. I have been on the hunt
- 6:34Speaker 1: for the largest water bottles possible that fit in the
- 6:37Speaker 1: two water bottle holders say that five times fast that
- 6:41Speaker 1: I now have on my bike, and I have landed
- 6:46Speaker 1: on this duo from Camelback. But I have never been
- 6:50Speaker 1: like a huge consume fluids on the move person, except
- 6:54Speaker 1: on long runs. You know, if you're going to be
- 6:57Speaker 1: out there and act it for less than forty five
- 7:00Speaker 1: minutes or so, you don't always need to bring fluid
- 7:03Speaker 1: with you. I say that with a caveat knowing that
- 7:06Speaker 1: right now it's super super hot outside. So if you
- 7:09Speaker 1: want some more insight as to what nutrition might look
- 7:12Speaker 1: like on hot days, definitely click on over to the
- 7:14Speaker 1: episode on summer or running that I'll link to in
- 7:17Speaker 1: the show notes. Anyway, I don't think that I'm necessarily
- 7:21Speaker 1: a super this oh god, the sentence I'm about to
- 7:24Speaker 1: say thirsty person. I also, during a regular day, I
- 7:30Speaker 1: feel as though I'm awful at drinking water, but somehow
- 7:33Speaker 1: still manage to get by. But you cannot escape when
- 7:37Speaker 1: you need hydration and you're on the move. So definitely,
- 7:41Speaker 1: definitely bring more water, more fluids than you think that
- 7:45Speaker 1: you need. Next tip I mentioned sunscreen. No matter what
- 7:49Speaker 1: time of day it is that you're heading out there,
- 7:52Speaker 1: load up on SPF. I have been leaving for my
- 7:56Speaker 1: rides before six point thirty in the morning, when I'm
- 7:59Speaker 1: going long and still lathering it on, and somehow it
- 8:03Speaker 1: feels like an act of God. I have been able
- 8:06Speaker 1: to a not get burns and be even more miraculous,
- 8:10Speaker 1: avoid some pretty wretched tan lines. I'm wearing a calf sock,
- 8:16Speaker 1: a pair of cycling shorts, a T shirt. All those
- 8:19Speaker 1: might not be exactly desirable places for bold contrasts in
- 8:23Speaker 1: skin tone. So I would highly highly recommend at least
- 8:27Speaker 1: fifty SPF and if you can bring it with you,
- 8:30Speaker 1: definitely definitely do so. I'm a huge fan of Supergroup,
- 8:35Speaker 1: also of sunbumb There is no such thing as too
- 8:40Speaker 1: much sunscreen in my opinion. My next big learning from
- 8:43Speaker 1: the last few weeks, I finally learned how to take
- 8:46Speaker 1: the wheels off of my bike, both the front and
- 8:48Speaker 1: the back, and they are different. To take off the
- 8:51Speaker 1: two of them, the back one definitely requires a little
- 8:53Speaker 1: bit more finagling, so to speak. Make sure to do
- 8:57Speaker 1: that that you have the right size multi For me,
- 9:01Speaker 1: taking the front wheel off the bike came in super handy.
- 9:04Speaker 1: When I wanted to put the bicycle in my car,
- 9:08Speaker 1: was able to fit it inside a car without putting
- 9:10Speaker 1: the seat down by taking off that front wheel. So, yes,
- 9:14Speaker 1: the wheels come off, Yes, it's easy to put them
- 9:16Speaker 1: back on. No, it's not dangerous to start riding after
- 9:19Speaker 1: you've temporarily taken the wheel off. I'm sure for more
- 9:22Speaker 1: experienced cyclists that are listening to this, they're like laughing
- 9:25Speaker 1: at me telling people this, But this is the stuff
- 9:26Speaker 1: that I just didn't know getting into everything. Next hot tip,
- 9:31Speaker 1: make sure to take the time to warm up before
- 9:34Speaker 1: you get on your bike. And I say this specifically
- 9:37Speaker 1: right now, as it is warm outside. You might not
- 9:41Speaker 1: feel in your head like, oh, I need to take
- 9:44Speaker 1: this time to warm up, but your muscles need time.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Your muscles need to wake up just like you feel
- 9:49Speaker 1: like you need to wake up in the morning. And
- 9:50Speaker 1: by getting that blood flowing, you make them more supple,
- 9:53Speaker 1: You make them more ready to be able to take
- 9:55Speaker 1: on an effort jumping Jack's squats, lunges, dynamics. You want
- 10:00Speaker 1: to make sure that, no matter what before the activity,
- 10:03Speaker 1: that your movements are fluid and dynamic. Last, but not least,
- 10:07Speaker 1: this is something I was thinking a lot about on
- 10:09Speaker 1: my ride today, is just this idea of embracing uncertainty.
- 10:13Speaker 1: There are so many things in my life that I
- 10:15Speaker 1: want to control, right, I'm super super type A. But
- 10:18Speaker 1: I think what I like about cycling in some way
- 10:21Speaker 1: is just that I don't know everything, and I don't
- 10:24Speaker 1: know necessarily what's going to happen on any given ride.
- 10:28Speaker 1: There are gonna be variables, there are gonna be things
- 10:30Speaker 1: I can't control. Maybe I'll get a fullat I don't know,
- 10:34Speaker 1: maybe i'll get a little bit lost, It'll be okay.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I think that this is something that I'm really appreciating
- 10:40Speaker 1: from this new hobby, is this concept of you can't
- 10:44Speaker 1: control everything, and it's okay to relinquish some of that.
- 10:48Speaker 1: It's okay to maybe feel a little bit anxious at first,
- 10:51Speaker 1: but embrace this fun opportunity to just let go what
- 10:56Speaker 1: will be will be, and you will be able to
- 10:59Speaker 1: handle anything that comes your way. And trust me, things
- 11:03Speaker 1: will come your way. That's me rambling about some new
- 11:06Speaker 1: cycling lessons once again. If you have any questions anything
- 11:10Speaker 1: that you have learned becoming a new cyclist. I feel
- 11:15Speaker 1: as though everyone I know lately has been hopping on
- 11:17Speaker 1: the bike. It's fun to be in this crew of newbies.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Definitely shoot me a DM, shoot me an email Emily
- 11:22Speaker 1: at hurdle dot us. I love to learn and grow
- 11:26Speaker 1: with you at Hurdle podcast at Emily Body another hurdle conquered.
