- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Happy Friday.
- 0:16Great to have your company. Thank you for tapping on play
- 0:18and inviting me into whatever your day looks like.
- 0:22The weekend is getting close. Or you may be up to Friday
- 0:25night, in which case, happy weekend to you.
- 0:27I hope it's a time when you get some space and some time for a
- 0:31bit of recuperation. There's going to be less
- 0:34recuperation and more space and time with soldiers for me this
- 0:39weekend as I head off in a training exercise with the good
- 0:42folk of the army in Tasmania. And that will be my absolute joy
- 0:47to get to go and spend some time with people, watching them in
- 0:50their native environment, learning and doing the things
- 0:52that they do. But As for now, As for now, we
- 0:57are going to tackle the centre third of the longest Sam in the
- 1:01history of Psalms. Yep, Psalm 119 we read through
- 1:06the 1st 7 letters of the Hebrew alphabet and now we are going to
- 1:11read through the next 7 letters starting with Heath and working
- 1:15away all the way to the convent. We will end with none.
- 1:19Yes, that was a joke. It was very funny wasn't it?
- 1:22And of all the sums to be able to put down and pick up the week
- 1:27later, this is a good one. I heard it described as this arm
- 1:31is not like a chain with one link connected to the other, but
- 1:34it's more like a string of pearls where each Pearl has
- 1:38equal but great value. Isn't that beautiful?
- 1:41So we are in for the next 7 stanzas of this poem, each of
- 1:47great value. So let us read together, Sam 119
- 1:54versus 57 to 112. Lord, you are mind.
- 2:10I promise to obey your words with all my heart.
- 2:14I want your blessings. Be merciful, as you promised.
- 2:19I pondered the direction of my life and I turned to follow your
- 2:22laws. I will hurry without delay to
- 2:26obey your commands. Evil people will try to drag me
- 2:30into sin, but I'm firmly anchored to your instructions.
- 2:35I rise at midnight to thank you for your just regulations.
- 2:39I am a friend to anyone who fears you, anyone who obeys your
- 2:43commandments. Our Lord, Your unfailing love
- 2:46fills the earth. Teach me your decrees, Teff.
- 2:54You have done many good things for me, Lord, just as you
- 2:57promised. I believe in your commands.
- 3:00Now teach me good judgement and knowledge.
- 3:03I used to wander off until you disciplined me, but now I
- 3:07closely follow your word. You are good and do only good.
- 3:12Teach me your decrees. Arrogant people smear me with
- 3:16lies, but in truth, I obey your commandments with all my heart.
- 3:22Their hearts are dull and stupid, but I delight in your
- 3:26instructions. My suffering was good for me,
- 3:30for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.
- 3:33Your instructions are more valuable to me than millions in
- 3:37gold and silver. Yod, you made me, You created
- 3:44me. Now give me the sense to follow
- 3:47your commands by all who fear you.
- 3:50Find in me A cause for joy, for I have put my hope in your word.
- 3:56I know, oh Lord, that your regulations are fair.
- 4:00You discipline me because I needed it.
- 4:03Now let your unfailing love comfort me, just as you promised
- 4:07me, your servant. Surround me with your tender
- 4:11mercies that I may live for your instructions.
- 4:14I might delight bring disgrace upon the arrogant people who
- 4:18lied about me. Meanwhile, I will concentrate on
- 4:22your commandments. Let me be united with all who
- 4:26fear you, with those who know your laws.
- 4:30May I be blameless in keeping your decrees.
- 4:33Then I will never be ashamed, calf.
- 4:39I am worn out waiting for your rescue, but I've put my hope in
- 4:44your word. My eyes are straining to see
- 4:48your promises come true. When will you comfort me?
- 4:51I'm shrivelled like a wineskin in the smoke, but I have not
- 4:55forgotten to obey your decrees. How long must I wait?
- 5:00When will you punish those who persecute me?
- 5:03These arrogant people who hate your instructions have dug deep
- 5:07pits to trap me. All your commands are
- 5:11trustworthy. Protect me from those who hunt
- 5:14me down without cause. They almost finish me off.
- 5:18But I refused to abandon your commandments in your unfailing
- 5:22love. Spare my life, then I can
- 5:25continue to obey your laws. Lamed.
- 5:32Your eternal Word, O Lord, stands firm in heaven.
- 5:37Your faithfulness extends to every generation as enduring as
- 5:41the earth you created. Your regulations remain true to
- 5:46this day, for everything serves your plans.
- 5:50If your instructions hadn't sustained me with joy, I would
- 5:54have died in my misery. I will never forget your
- 5:58commandments, for by them you give me life.
- 6:02I am yours. Rescue me, for I have worked
- 6:06hard at obeying your commandments.
- 6:09Like the wicked hide along the way to kill me, I will quietly
- 6:13keep my mind on your laws. Even perfection has its limits,
- 6:19but your commands have no limits, mem.
- 6:27Oh, how I love your instructions.
- 6:30I think about them all day long. Your commands make me wiser than
- 6:35my enemies, for they are my constant guide.
- 6:39Yes, I have more insight than my teachers, for I am always
- 6:43thinking of your laws. I'm even wiser than my elders,
- 6:48for I've kept your commandments. I've refused to walk on any evil
- 6:53path so that I may remain obedient to Your word.
- 6:58I haven't turned away from your regulations, for You have taught
- 7:02me well how sweet your words taste.
- 7:06To me they are sweeter than honey.
- 7:08Your commandments give me understanding.
- 7:11No wonder I hate every false way of life.
- 7:17None. Your word is a lamp to guide my
- 7:23feet and a light for my path. I've promised it once, and I'll
- 7:28promise it again. I will obey your righteous
- 7:31regulations. I have suffered much, O Lord.
- 7:36Restore my life again as you promised lol.
- 7:39Accept my offering of praise and teach me your regulations.
- 7:44My life constantly hangs in the balance, but I will not stop
- 7:48obeying your instructions. The wicked have set their traps
- 7:52for me, but I will not turn from your commandments.
- 7:57The old laws are my treasure. They are my heart's delight.
- 8:02I am determined to keep your decrees to the very end,
- 8:18Our Lord. You do not leave us wandering
- 8:21aimlessly in this life. You don't forsake us, letting
- 8:25the tides of this universe push us this way and that way.
- 8:29No, you give us your word. You give us your instruction and
- 8:34your encouragement and justice. Like the psalmist is just so
- 8:38grateful for your word, so are we.
- 8:43And Lord, we love that we have the absolute privilege of Your
- 8:49Word given to us so that we can come to You day after day after
- 8:55day and hear Your words spoken to us.
- 8:59Thank You that Your Word truly is like a lamp to our path, that
- 9:04it guides us. That when we find ourselves at a
- 9:07figurative crossroad in our lives, not sure what to do, not
- 9:11sure how to make a decision. That You have given us so much
- 9:15wisdom and so much of your character and Your truth in Your
- 9:19Word. That we can come to Your Word,
- 9:23That we can hear Your Word, and that we can live according to
- 9:26Your teaching. And when we struggle to find the
- 9:32right way to go, Holy Spirit prompt us.
- 9:35Guide us always back to Jesus, who is truth.
- 9:42Ah, what a good, good God you are.
- 9:44We worship you, we praise you, and we give you all honour and
- 9:48glory, and it's in your name that we pray all of this Jesus,
- 9:53Amen.
