Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Difference Between Suppression and Removal of a Vital Reaction, Part 1

- 0:01As long as we set our standpoint in the external surface
- 0:04consciousness, we do not have the leverage nor the tools to
- 0:09easily remove an embedded reaction.
- 0:13We tend to take steps to suppress rather than expunge the
- 0:18unwanted energy. This may take the form of an
- 0:21ascetic denial or an avoidance of interaction with anything
- 0:26that might trigger the reaction, such as escape to The Cave, the
- 0:31monastery, the forest or the desert.
- 0:35Or it may take more severe form such as physical self torture or
- 0:39extreme forms of fasting, et cetera.
- 0:43Another aspect of suppression is the attempt to regulate things
- 0:47in other people that one struggles with internally, and
- 0:51thus shift the focus on to creating rules, laws,
- 0:55regulations or moral controls of some sort to enforce one's own
- 1:01issues on to others who may not necessarily follow the same
- 1:05ideas, principles or guidelines for their lives.
- 1:10One way or the other, however, suppression leaves the seeds of
- 1:14the reaction in place and subject to bursting out.
- 1:17When and if an opportunity arises, the reaction actually
- 1:23can be greater due to the suppression when it does erupt.
- 1:28When enforced upon others, it tends to create smouldering
- 1:32resentments and eventual rebellion.
- 1:36Through the technique of the separation of the witness
- 1:40consciousness from the external nature and the resultant non
- 1:44attachment, the observing consciousness can begin to
- 1:48control these reactions. First, by shifting the attention
- 1:52and focus to the higher energies and sources that are the
- 1:55objective of the seeker, and 2nd, through this status of non
- 2:00attachment, refusing to accept or admit the energy that is
- 2:05trying to take control of the nature.
- 2:08A disciple asks. Mother, last time you said that
- 2:12often there is in US a dark element which makes us commit
- 2:16stupidities. So you said that when one is
- 2:19conscious of this element, it must be pulled out.
- 2:23But does pulling it out mean, for example, when one is
- 2:27conscious, that this element comes to make us do stupid
- 2:30things? Then if by an effort of will one
- 2:33abstains from doing it, can one say that one has pulled it out?
- 2:39The mother responds. One has sat upon it.
- 2:44Then how to pull it out For that, first of all, you must
- 2:50become conscious of it. You see, put it right in front
- 2:53of you and cut the links which attach it to your consciousness.
- 2:58It is a work of inner psychology.
- 3:00You know one can see when one studies oneself very
- 3:05attentively. You see that one day you were
- 3:08very generous. Generous in your feelings,
- 3:12generous in your sensations, generous in your thoughts and
- 3:16even in material things. That is, you understand the
- 3:20faults of others, their intentions, weaknesses, even
- 3:25nasty movements. You see all this and you are
- 3:29full of good feelings, of generosity.
- 3:32You tell yourself, well, everyone does the best he can.
- 3:37Like that, another day, or perhaps the very next minute,
- 3:42you will notice in yourself a kind of dryness, fixity,
- 3:47something that is bitter, that judges severely, that goes as
- 3:51far as bearing a grudge. Has rancor would like the
- 3:55evildoer punished? That almost has a feeling of
- 3:59vengeance. Just the very opposite of the
- 4:02former. One day someone harms you and
- 4:05you say doesn't matter. He did not know, or he couldn't
- 4:09do otherwise, or that's his nature, or he could not
- 4:13understand. The next day, or perhaps an hour
- 4:17later, you say he must be punished, he must pay for it.
- 4:22He must be made to feel that he has done wrong with a kind of
- 4:26rage. And you want to take things, you
- 4:29want to keep them for yourself. You have all the feelings of
- 4:33jealousy, envy, narrowness. You see just the very opposite
- 4:38of the other feeling. This is the dark side.
- 4:43And so the moment one sees it, if one looks at it and doesn't
- 4:47say it is I. If one says no, it is my shadow,
- 4:52it is the being I must throw out of myself.
- 4:56One puts on it the light of the other part.
- 4:59One tries to bring them face to face and with the knowledge and
- 5:03light of the other. One doesn't try so much to
- 5:07convince, because that is very difficult, but one compels it to
- 5:11remain quiet, first to stand farther away.
- 5:16Then one flings it very far away so that it can no longer return,
- 5:21putting a great light on it. There are instances in which it
- 5:25is possible to change, but this is very rare.
- 5:30There are instances in which one can put upon this being, or the
- 5:33shadow put upon it such an intense light that it transforms
- 5:38it and it changes into what is the truth of your being.
- 5:43But this is a rare thing. It can be done, but it is rare.
- 5:47Usually the best thing is to say no, this is not I, I don't want
- 5:53it. I have nothing to do with this
- 5:55movement. It doesn't exist for me.
- 5:58It is something contrary to my nature.
- 6:01And so by dint of insisting and driving it away, finally one
- 6:06separates oneself from it. End Quote.
