- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Hey everyone,
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: it's Catherine Crestani with another episode of Willow Healing Matters
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: and today I'm joined by Carter Fox.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: He is an award-winning bassist,
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: producer,
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: author and music business educator whose career spans touring,
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: recording and entrepreneurship.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: He has performed and collaborated with authors across jazz, R&B,
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: electronic and experimental music,
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: toured internationally and released original music with millions of streams.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: In addition to his work as a musician,
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Carter writes and teaches about the music industry in the intersection of music,
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: science,
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: and curiosity,
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: including his book,
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Exploring Cosmic Melodies,
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: which explores the connection between sound, space, and human experience.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: So a big welcome to the show, Carter.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Thank you for having me, Catherine.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: I'm looking forward to our chat today.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: So straight away,
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: I am pulled to what led you to even writing this book and what inspired you to get
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: to this point?
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Honestly, it's a book that it's my love letter to my two inspirations of my life, right?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Music and space.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: And honestly,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: ever since I was a young child,
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: I was very heavily inspired by looking up at the stars by...
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Music has a very similar...
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Interconnectedness to it as well.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And throughout my life,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: it's always been together, mixing science, mixing music, mixing art, mixing math.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And came a time after writing some other books about music business,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: I finally just let myself sit back and be inspired.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: And I happen to also write a bunch of music directly related to astrology
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: and astronomy and metaphysical and physical aspects of things,
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: how it feels to our spirits and our souls,
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: as well as our bodies and the physical aspects.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And the book just kind of flew out of me.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: It was just me studying things and regurgitating in a way my own inspirations.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And that's exploring cosmic melodies.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: It's just seeing that connection between music and space.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And it's just as human as anything else we experience.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: I love that because I know how powerful frequencies can be,
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: especially,
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: you know,
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: there's all that talk about
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: how they've changed the frequency that music,
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: you know, comes across the radar.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: And then it's less healing than it used to be, which is so fascinating.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: You know,
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: so when you started,
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: you know, dabbling with this more, what are some things that you found?
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Look at me being curious.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, first of all,
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: what a really amazing piece of history and science and connection you just said,
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: because we talk about 440 hertz,
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: the tuning A naturally, and that's what you're talking about.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And for a long time,
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: up until maybe 200 years ago,
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: when a bunch And that hurt is if you look at,
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: you tune different notes to those frequencies and those relative frequencies
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: across different scales.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And that's one of those little things you start discovering about what
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: that could mean across our universe.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And ourselves,
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: even how,
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: something I really find interesting,
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: I always bring it up almost when I bring my book up,
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: is the ancient culture connection with space and music and what that meant to them
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: because it was metaphysical to them.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: They're telling their history, their stories.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: It's all about.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Think about how they're connected to the universe around them, the Earth, each other.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: They had such an ancient cultures across the world,
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Africa, Native Americans, across Europe, across India, across Asia, everywhere.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: They always felt that connection when you look up at the stars And they created music to that.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: That's what they were creating to celebrate in their culture,
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: yearly celebrations, annual,
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: beyond how we just kind of use it both as background noise and celebratory now.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: They were using it to record the movement of the stars,
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: the marriage of the kings and queens,
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: the yearly celebration, the annual celebrations.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And Taking the music they wrote and trying to equate it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: So India has these things called ragas in their music.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And it's specifically based on cosmic observation from a long time ago.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: It's like off time and off feeling to us,
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: more myself in the Western style of music with four,
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: four beats and four on the floor, what we're used to nowadays.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: But there's such a different feeling and it evokes different Healing and feeling
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: and emotion inside you.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: And if you go to sound baths and these different experiences,
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: which I'm sure you have a lot of experience with too,
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: that's what they're kind of bringing forth.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And that's what the study is.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And using the tones of the drums and the rhythm patterns that are different
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: and That's been ancient cultural music for a very long time, obviously.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: And as we've gone through history itself and we get to the Renaissance
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: and Romantic periods and kind of the birth of the Western styles of music,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: they still took that inspiration.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: That combination of astrology and astronomy,
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: you can look up the planets,
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Gustav Holt's famous works,
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: which has much to do as astronomy,
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: looking at Jupiter and looking at Mars and looking at the science going on as it did
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: as looking at the spiritual sides and how the moon And that's just as much to do
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: with everything.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: And that's still true today.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: There's artists who are just as inspired by that side.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: And that's my case, too.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: I'm getting excited already.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: This is what happens.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: I get excited thinking about this, learning about this.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: My soul is resonating right now.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: That's why I'm getting the goosebumps.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And that's just, it's just what my passions are in life.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Some people feel this way about so many things and different things.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And this is for me, I'm like, boom, this is how I'm connected to the universe.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: And I want to share that.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And that's where the book kind of comes from.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: And that's all the difference.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And if you want to explore this too with me, that's what the book really will cover.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: I love that so much.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: And I love that you brought up Mercury because we just stepped out
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: of Mercury Retrograde when we're filming this right now.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: That being conscious of that too and without being aware of it growing up,
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: I kind of was always thinking about that while even just looking through telescopes
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: and learning about cosmology,
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: the history of the universe as much as what it means when cosmology,
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: What it means when the little bits of everything is pulling on each other,
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: like the placement of the planets and the stars and the black holes and the pulsars.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: There's always discussions of what is that affecting physically,
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: but I think a lot of science is catching up to the aura,
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: the frequency, the balance of what we really do.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Everything interacts with everything, macro, micro.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: that's why I think it's just as important to do with music and messing with all that
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: as it is to study space and the stars.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: A hundred percent.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: And I feel it's interesting too,
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: because I feel like when you establish that connection that's bigger than you,
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: it allows you to start to step into expanding your capabilities because all of
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: a sudden you're like,
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: well, I'm just like this little element in, you know, a bigger, bigger scale.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: But how can I capture that?
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Or how can I, you know, and I feel it almost gives you this sense of courage.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: Just like, well, I'm just going to put it out there and see what happens.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Yes, I love that sense of courage.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: I always say seek growth and hopefully the inspiration of my music or these writings
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: or whatever.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Like you said,
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: it's kind of funny too,
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: not to go on a tangent, but even thinking about chemistry, right?
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: You just said elements,
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: but how literally the individual come together and we create water to hydrogen
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: and oxygen.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: And that's what we are.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: And we combine with other people and we combine with other minds to grow and
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: To connect it even back even more, that's waves coming together to create harmony.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Everything is a wave form, right?
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: And that's where my brain always just takes off with music and space.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: I'm like, waves and sounds, it's beautiful.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would love to see inside your brain when you're having those moments.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: I just saw these images of like beautiful colors and then stars and black holes
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: and all those
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: fun things.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: And there's a little bit of synthasia, I think, in my mind too, right?
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: When you like you hear,
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: I've always described that every time I can shut my eyes and I'll like hear music
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: and see the picture.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And like when I produce music,
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: I'm already like,
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Hearing the next thing,
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: and I'm sure this is how a lot of us work,
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: like you can experiment and build,
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: but I like just listening back to the track and then just imagining in your brain,
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: you hear the next harmony, you hear the next piece, you see that in your mind.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: And that's what looking up at the stars and just studying about different things going on.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: There's so much going on in space learning right now in science and mental learning
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: and metaphysical learning all the time right now,
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: like the combination of We talk about,
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: not to go down again another tangent,
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: but just thinking about quantum computing and then the fact that that is light
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: and crystal and fourth dimensional aspects,
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: people many years ago would be like, that's something different.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: But now we're beginning to understand so much more,
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: which is such a cool aspect of things, a great awakening in that aspect.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Well, it's like, you know, people are like, oh, it's just a crystal quartz.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: It's like you have quartz in everything in your home.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: If you have technology, there's quartz in it.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: They're like, what?
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: I'm like, that's what creates the electrical currents and everything else like that.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: And then you've got silicon in there.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Like, let's talk about silica, you know, like all these sorts of things.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: But I think a lot of the time we discount those smaller components that make up
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: a big thing, which I feel leads me to my next question.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: So when you're producing or you have a piece of music come in,
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Is it that you're aiming to create a certain emotion that comes across or
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: a certain feeling or you want to trigger some sort of remembrance?
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: What kind of inspires you to get to the next point?
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: I think sometimes it's one way and sometimes it's the other,
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: but depending on my exact emotion at that moment myself.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: But honestly,
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: when I'm producing,
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: I'm looking for an emotion that I'm evoking in myself and the story itself,
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: if you will, story that it's telling.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Whatever that may be.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I don't usually write lyrics,
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: so the story is very different for every person who may listen to my song,
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: all my different things.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: But for me, I'm trying to evoke a certain sense of awe, a certain sense of inspiration, right?
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Whether you're flying on a plane for the first time and you look out the window
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: and you see that scenery, right?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: When you look over all the beautiful coasts of Australia or,
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: you know, for me,
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: I recently got into,
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: I flew across the world to go to Thailand and play in Asia a little bit.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: And literally like from where I am in the US,
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: I flew to Switzerland and just getting to look out.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: And again, it's that, wow, we're so small.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: We're so connected.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: We got to be, you know, what a miracle it is for us to be And I'm like...
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: To each their own, as long as it, at the end of the day, kind of gets you to do something.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Again, for me personally,
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: I always just want you,
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: you know, it's inspired by space video games being good to each other.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: That's like my main inputs, you know, my motivators.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: And the output is just for you,
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: you know, inspire you to learn more, seek growth, take another step forward.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Even you don't have to go invent something brand new out there,
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: but you can go on a walk outside if you haven't gone outside, you know.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: You can learn something new about the world, about space that you maybe weren't interested in.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Something that just triggers you a little bit to be inspired.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: And for anyone playing along at home, write that down.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: What inspires you and go do that?
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: Because my pet hate, Carter, is when people say to me, wow, you're so inspiring.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: I'm like, have you gone and changed anything or gone to do something?
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: They're like, no.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, well, I'm not inspiring you enough.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Enough, right?
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: For me, if I'm sharing something inspirational or you're inspired,
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: you need to go act upon that because otherwise you're ignoring part
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: of you that's pulling you towards something bigger or pulling you towards
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: that next step.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: So thank you for bringing up that inspiration thing, even if it's just a walk.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Even if it's just a walk, because who knows?
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: I love walking meditations, right?
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: It's like one of my favorites.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: It's a clear head.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: You can think of things and solve those problems.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: You might have just gotten too flabbergasted.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: I hope you're inspired to go take a walk out there just by listening to us today.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: Without your phone, without your phone, without looking at your phone.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Unless you're listening to us.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Unless you're listening to this podcast.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Or you've got some of Carter's music on.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Anything else though, you don't need the phone.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Enjoy nature.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: I have a question.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: So there's some,
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: you know,
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: some songs and some artists and they'll just get stuck in your head or you've,
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I've heard the beautiful singers and I know they've like recorded them
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: because their voices like got this certain frequency.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: It just heals people in the room and things like that.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Is there a way that you try and capture that in your music or you're purely just,
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: you know, going for gold?
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Or like being a producer, I'm like, how do you even capture that in music?
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's such another kind of thing.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Like that goes back to just being a music producer and a musician.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: And yeah, how do you capture that feeling?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: We always describe it,
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: me and my bandmates and fellow musicians,
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: anyone we work with,
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: any musician person would probably say it's like capturing lightning in a bottle.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Any creative, I think.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Would, could say that, right?
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And that's the interesting thing.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: And you start with someone who's great, has a great voice.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: And one of my favorite things to do is go to like coffee houses and like
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: the jazz clubs, like the smaller ones where it's acoustic, more acoustic.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: So it's really the frequencies touching,
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: you know, vibrating against you and the singers are just amazing.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: It's all about them.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: And it's ironic because I do instrumental music myself,
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: musically, but I love the acoustic singer-songwriter.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And what I just try to capture is the same feeling.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: And that's what we try to do so many different ways,
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: whether that's setting up to record in a So who's recording feels a certain way,
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: or we set up a certain quote unquote vibe.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: I don't want to be cheesy, but literally setting up the vibe, put on the mood lighting.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: You can't see it this way, but I have a beautiful soundboard, not soundboard, but soundproofing.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: That's a picture of the earth from the moon,
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: not to be on brand about myself,
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: but It's like I'm looking down from the moon on earth every time I'm sitting
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: at my studio desk to work right now.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: And I have some lighting that will make it cool.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: And it puts me in that exact perspective.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you talk to the person.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: I have a collaborator who I tell them the story and I'm like,
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: this is what the song's about and this is the mood we're evoking.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Again, just like I've been saying,
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: we're like you're scared or you don't know what's going on and we're coming after
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: a space war,
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: a space fight, different rocket ship kind of things and we're capturing that.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: It's a fun exercise to do.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: It's really fun to do for my own music,
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: but I also take that approach if I'm writing for film and TV or whatever else,
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: because it's the same thing.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: You're trying to evoke some kind of emotion.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I personally just want people to be inspired to learn more.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Well, that's sometimes the biggest thing, but I love that.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: I do love that.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: And for anyone who's listening at home and they dabble in music or they're curious
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: about it or, you know, everyone, I say everyone has a song in them.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: What would be some advice to share or like to get them started or just to give them
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: a little bit of a courage or a pep talk, if you will?
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Just keep going, right?
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Make a song.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: We all have,
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: if you have, you know, an iPhone or the Samsung, we all have studios in our pockets.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: You can download an app and start making ideas right now.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Keep listening to a lot of music that you love and stay curious.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: And if you want to make certain kind of music,
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: for example,
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: like EDM,
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Check out videos and ask questions and be curious, but just get started, right?
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Just take a little step.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: And if that's downloading a free app today on your phone or your laptop,
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: that's how to make music.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: If it's Logic, if it's Pro Tools, if it's Ableton Live, just again, just get started.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: I think that's the theme of today.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Just go do it.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Go do it.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Just do it.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: The question that's popping in my head,
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: and I know I get this a lot from my book that I've written, is,
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: you know,
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: A lot of people talk about AI and music,
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: and I'm not going to lie,
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: I use AI to help create some of my backing tracks for meditation
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: because I don't know how to use all the other things and everything like that.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: But as an artist and someone that does that,
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: what do you feel is the biggest thing to watch out for with AI kind of creeping
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: in more into creating music?
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: I feel that lyrics particularly,
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: I feel they don't feel the same when it comes through AI,
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: but I'd love to hear your opinion being in the music industry.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, that's a very hot topic right now.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: And some people are super embracing it and some people are really against it.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: And personally speaking, I feel there's always a level to use things and keeping things is huge.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: I think you kind of just touched on it a little bit.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Things that are innately human, lyrics,
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: the emotion behind stuff,
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: that's going to be the kind of differences that you feel and experience.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: But it's an interesting thing because I'm also someone who likes to understand...
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: And I'll see you next time.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Things were very different for that.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: So I think as a creator, I try to use tools in a way that I like to.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: So I don't necessarily, I know how to play music and create things.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: So I don't need to go do things from scratch all the time.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: But for people who do not know how to and kind of need little reasons,
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: it could be a very great use,
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: like you mentioned, like to create little sound bath stuff.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: The only thing to watch out for,
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: and that's just for any use of an AI tool,
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: you can use it to write copy for social media posts and for podcasts kind of things.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: You just got to watch out for originality, right?
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Like you just want to do things that are you.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: And as an artist, that's more important to me than other uses.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: And of course,
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: I'm always of the mind of,
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: hey, but you can use some of my music for some of that stuff, hopefully.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: But I totally understand the creation of it for things.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: I might take you up on that, Karo.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: Hey, I would love that.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: I would absolutely love it.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: I just had the coolest idea.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: Maybe we could collaborate and I can do the meditation part and then you can write
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: the background part and we can release it together.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: That would be
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: really cool.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: That would be fantastic.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: And we should absolutely do that.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: That we've been inspired.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: I'm going to talk to you about it afterwards.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: Only because I got yesterday, so many people said to me, you need to do more meditations.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: Like you have to record them.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, but I just channel them.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: I don't remember them.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: That's when you got to just remember to hit the record on your foot.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: I get that.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: You're as much an artist as anyone else.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: That's being an artist right there, right?
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: The universe spoke and you're just like, it's there.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: And I have that problem too with songwriting.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I got this idea.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: It's cool.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: And then I never remember it.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: It's gone.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: It's like dreams.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: It's like you have to write it down in the moment.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, you just forget it 100%.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: Truth.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Though sometimes,
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know about you,
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: but sometimes as I start getting tired again, this may come up as fluff too.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: As I get tired again, I actually start remembering the dream from the night before.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'm getting close to the frequency.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Well, I actually interviewed someone that does dream stuff with people.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: And what she said was,
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: if you wake up and you start to,
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: I keep saying this lately,
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: but if you wake up and you have a dream and you start to forget it,
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: lay back down exactly in the same position And it will help the dream come back
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: to you quicker.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: So I was like, oh.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: So maybe if you're inspired with the song,
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: maybe you have to go back to exactly where you were inspired in that moment.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: And you know how people talk about, I'm just going to recreate the thing to remember.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: Or, you know, if you lose something, you go back and retrace yourself.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: And I used AI to help me do the final edit of my book.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: AI did not write my book.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: I want to emphasize that, but it helped me edit it at the end.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: So it's like I'm using it as a tool to help refine my creativity rather
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: than replace my creativity.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: I think that's the biggest thing that we want to emphasize from music
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: as well.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: And right,
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: like the line,
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: it's so interesting because what's the difference between that and Grammarly, right?
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Like using some of those tools, arguably, it's the same in a way.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Like that's kind of the methodology.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: But to study, I always have the mind of to understand what it is, regardless of if you use it.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Like if you don't have to use AI tools if you don't want to.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: But you need to understand what they're doing and what it means and what it could do.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Because if you're an artist,
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: you don't need to use it to create music,
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: but you could use it to run ads or outreach to music venues,
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: do things that you don't want to do either that help you grow, right?
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: That's the other avenues that I think is really cool about it.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: I definitely understand what you mean about all the social media posts
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: and everything like that.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Because I'm like, just write me a caption for this.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: I've already done the work.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: Just write me a caption that helps people find it.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: It's the only issue,
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: not the only,
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: there's a lot of issues people can have with a lot of different things.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Of course,
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: when we have these discussions,
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: I'm always like environmentally speaking, I hate the idea.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you have these issues,
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: but in the United States,
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: we have the data center debates and issues where they're coming in to discuss.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: But there's no environmental planning around it and everything else.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: And of course,
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: the way the states is right now,
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: it's like the last thing people in power are thinking about.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: They just want the money.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: But it's a sad truth.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: So it's something to be... That's why people, I think, are...
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: That's the controversy and that's the thoughtfulness we need to still have
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: as creators and creative folks trying to utilize it.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: And honestly, I've gotten a criticism.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: I get that criticism in one of my books because it was written in 2024
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: and very early onset before more of the controversy.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: But I'm like, hey, if you're not a great bio writer, use chat to write your bio for your EPK.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: And people are just like, don't use generative AI.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: But it's the same discussion.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: It's like, look,
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: You got to be aware of tools and evolutions and how things are so you can fight
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: the good fight.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: Look, I was so against AI a few years ago.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: I'm like, nah, I don't want to use AI.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: I actually fully scrubbed my digital footprint off the internet.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: I got to that point, right?
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: And then I'm like, well, hang on a minute.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: My coach said to me that I had at the time, How do you get out to people?
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: I'm like, oh, I'll go to a talk.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: He goes, what, to like 50 people?
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: I go, yeah.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: He goes, you do one right post, you can reach thousands if not millions.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: I was like, yeah, okay.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: Maybe I do need to make peace with social media and get back on.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: So you just do it on your terms.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: That's I think the biggest thing is do what feels right for you.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: If you don't want to use AI, great, don't use AI.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: I use AI to do all my SEO backtags.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: Do you know how long that would take me to figure out how to do that?
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: And I go, hey, chat,
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: write me the YouTube backdoor tags for this episode that I've shared the transcript
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: with you.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: There you go, cut and paste.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: That's 500 characters already done.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: I didn't even know there were backdoor SEOs.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: I was like, why do all these people say there's these SEO things that I need to fix up?
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Anyway, the point is, it can do it in not even a minute, which would take me so long.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: So I guess if you're going to use it to support your productivity,
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: my husband's created a whole app using AI, these sorts of things.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: It's helping you execute your creativity.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: It's not replacing you.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: But if you start to let it replace you, like I yell at my chat all the time.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: Like my friend calls it the lazy employee.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: And I just say to him, right?
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: I'm like, what are you doing?
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: That is not what I asked you.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: Like I'll generate cover art using chat, right?
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: And it's amazing how it can stuff it up so much.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Like I'm like, just push.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Put my image on the right, that person's on the left, and it will swap the image around.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: Okay, we'll just swap the tags down the bottom, and then we'll swap everything around.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: And then I give it to my husband.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: I'm like, do your magic and write a prompt to fix it because it's not listening to me today.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: He goes, you have to speak AI.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, but I don't.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you have to tell it to write a prompt for you first, right?
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, it is a silly.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just dealt with that earlier.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Like I said, I use agents to try to do outreach and it's gotten worse, if you will, over time.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: I'm letting it run, but it's like doing operations worse.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, what's going on, man?
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: We got to have a one-on-one.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: You know, we got to have a little meeting.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: You need to go take your usual holiday leave and come back.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, go take a break.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: I don't need you burnt out, Charles.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: I need you working great like you've been.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, dear.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: I guess the submarine,
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: all that for everybody is usually discernment and trust what works for you
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: and what doesn't.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: If it doesn't feel nice, don't use it.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: You know, if you get something come back from AI and it doesn't feel right, don't use it.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: Like if it's having a bad day and they do have bad days,
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: I just walk away and I'll come back and do it again another day.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: You know, like it's not worth Exactly.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: And as we start to finish our time up, Carter,
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: I asked the guests that come on the show,
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: if you could heal or change something in the world, what would it be?
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: I would...
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Hope people would just be calmer,
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: just if it's,
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: if that's a music thing,
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: if that's a,
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: everyone could get, honestly, I guess I wouldn't want everyone to be fed.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: That's always what I tell,
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: because if everyone could be fed and be calmer in this world,
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: we'd be able to talk things out and things would,
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: the reason, the idea of scarcity would change how we are as a, as a society.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: Beautiful.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: And if people want to connect with you,
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: Carter, or come find your music, where's the best place they can go?
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: You can find me online at www.carterfoxmusic.com.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: And you can find me across social media at carterfoxmusic.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: And on Instagram,
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: I'm actually carterman5000 because it's an old silly name from a rapper I used
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: to work with.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: And I never wanted to change it because I'm honored to use it.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, you can also find my books on Amazon.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: You can find them on Barnes & Noble.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Also, soulfultravelerapparel.com for signed special editions.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: Oh, amazing.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: And I'll make sure to put all those details in the show notes so
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: that everyone can come and find you and enter into the world of Carter and the music
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: that you create.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: So thank you so much for being on the show and for having this conversation.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: And you guys watch this space.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Carter and I are going to create something magical.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Yes, we are.

- 31:29SPEAKER_03: This book explores the intersection of loneliness, love,
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: and how chasing perfection through technology can lead to fantasy
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: and reality colliding.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: My virtual obsession out now.
