Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Attorney General Bondi, Rep. Jayapal spar over redacted Epstein files
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are joined in this room by some of the
- 0:02Speaker 1: thousands of survivors from Jeffrey Epstein's horrific sex trafficking ring.
- 0:07Speaker 1: They have shown such incredible courage in speaking out, in
- 0:12Speaker 1: demanding accountability to bring the predators and pedophiles to justice.
- 0:18Speaker 1: The Epstein Files Transparency Act required your Department of Justice
- 0:22Speaker 1: to disclose the perpetrators connected with Epstein's criminal activities and
- 0:27Speaker 1: to redact the information of survivors to protect their identities.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Let me show you what actually happened. First, in violation
- 0:37Speaker 1: of the law, your department has shown a pattern of
- 0:41Speaker 1: redacting the names of powerful predators. Here behind me is
- 0:46Speaker 1: one example of an email from Epstein to a man
- 0:50Speaker 1: whose name was redacted. The email reads quote, where are you?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Are you okay? I loved the torture VIDIA. Only after
- 1:02Speaker 1: members of Congress demanded that we see the unredacted files
- 1:07Speaker 1: did the world learn the name of this individual, Sultan
- 1:11Speaker 1: Ahmed bin Sulaym, the chairman and CEO of a company
- 1:16Speaker 1: that had financial ties to President Trump's business and personal
- 1:20Speaker 1: ties to Trump's advisor Steve Bannon. Second, the survivors were
- 1:25Speaker 1: not similarly protected. Also in violation of the law, here
- 1:30Speaker 1: is another email titled Epstein Victim List. We have blurred
- 1:35Speaker 1: the names of the survivors for their protection, but your
- 1:38Speaker 1: Department of Justice initially released this list of thirty two
- 1:43Speaker 1: survivors' names with only one name redacted, along with numerous
- 1:48Speaker 1: files that disclose not only the names, the emails, and
- 1:52Speaker 1: the addresses of survivors, but also nude photographs and even
- 1:57Speaker 1: the identities of Jane Does, who had been protected for
- 2:02Speaker 1: decades until your department released their names. Survivors are now
- 2:07Speaker 1: telling us that their families are finding out for the
- 2:10Speaker 1: first time that they were trafficked by Epstein. In their
- 2:14Speaker 1: words quote, this release does not provide closure. It feels
- 2:19Speaker 1: like a deliberate attempt to intimidate survivors, punish those who
- 2:24Speaker 1: came forward, and reinforced the same culture of secrecy that
- 2:28Speaker 1: allowed Epstein's crimes to continue for decades. To the survivors
- 2:33Speaker 1: in the room, if you are willing, please stand, and
- 2:42Speaker 1: if you are willing, please raise your hands. If you
- 2:45Speaker 1: have still not been able to meet with this Department
- 2:50Speaker 1: of Justice, please know for the record that every single
- 2:56Speaker 1: survivor has raised their hand. Attorney neral Bondi, you apologize
- 3:04Speaker 1: to the survivors and your opening statement for what they
- 3:07Speaker 1: went through at the hands of Jeffrey Epstein. Will you
- 3:10Speaker 1: turn to them now and apologize for what your Department
- 3:15Speaker 1: of Justice has put them through with the un absolutely
- 3:21Speaker 1: unacceptable release of the Epstein files and their information.

- 3:40Speaker 1: General von I'm answer no, I'm going to reclaim my
- 3:44Speaker 1: time because I asked you a generalcific question that I
- 3:49Speaker 1: would like question to answer, which is, will you turn
- 3:53Speaker 1: to the survivors? This is not about anybody that came
- 3:56Speaker 1: before you. It is about you taking responsibility for you
- 4:00Speaker 1: or Department of Justice and the harm that it has
- 4:03Speaker 1: done to the survivors who are standing right behind you
- 4:08Speaker 1: and are waiting for you to turn to them and
- 4:11Speaker 1: apologize for what your Department of Justices.
