Latest / Clone Wars: The Spinoff / Kendrick’s Masterclass in Owning Your Music

- 0:00Welcome to the show, everybody!
- 0:01I'm Dangerous Zygos, here with DJ Universe, Calvin Blingwell,
- 0:05and Dandy Market.
- 0:06And Calvin Blingwell, we gotta talk about what Kendrick Lamar just did with GNX
- 0:11under pgLang, because as a CEO focused on currency development,
- 0:15this is the ultimate masterclass in asset control.
- 0:18He left Top Dawg Entertainment, and now he controls both the masters and the
- 0:22publishing.
- 0:23The bag isn't just passing through his hands; it's staying in his house.
- 0:28Man, as an artist based in Calabasas trying to navigate this rap game,
- 0:33seeing Kendrick do that is straight inspiration.
- 0:36He's not just making hits; he's capturing the entire value chain.
- 0:40When you control pgLang, every single stream, every sync deal on a video game,
- 0:45every physical vinyl sale flows directly to his entity, not to some legacy label
- 0:50system that takes an eighty percent cut off the top.
- 0:54And that is not just a one-off anomaly anymore, Calvin.
- 0:57Look at the macro data from the first quarter of 2026.
- 1:01Independent labels and self-releasing artists held forty-four point one five percent
- 1:07of the entire U.S.
- 1:08recorded-music market.
- 1:10Almost half the game is indie now!
- 1:13The old narrative that you absolutely need a major label to move the needle is
- 1:17officially dead.
- 1:20We had to stay lit to survive the old days, and back then, you didn't have these
- 1:24options.
- 1:26Think about Prince changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol in the nineties
- 1:30just to protest Warner Brothers owning his masters, or Master P building No Limit
- 1:35Records in the late nineties by negotiating a historic eighty-twenty
- 1:39distribution-only deal with Priority.
- 1:42P kept his masters because he paid for his own manufacturing and promotion upfront.
- 1:47That was the blueprint.
- 1:50But here is the uncomfortable question I have to throw out to the room: if Kendrick
- 1:54can do this at the absolute peak of his global power, why are we still seeing rising
- 1:59artists sign away their masters in 2026 before they even have a single song on the
- 2:06Billboard charts?
- 2:08Because they're hungry, Zygos!
- 2:10When you're starting out, a two hundred thousand dollar advance looks like a
- 2:14mountain of cash.
- 2:16You don't think about the long-term value of the asset when you've got immediate
- 2:20bills to pay.
- 2:21But that advance is just a predatory loan against your own future labor.
- 2:27Let's look at the cold, hard numbers behind that choice, Calvin.
- 2:31If you are a signed artist on a standard major deal, you might get an eighteen to
- 2:36twenty percent royalty rate.
- 2:38If your catalog generates five hundred thousand dollars a year in net publisher's
- 2:42share, you are only taking home about ninety thousand dollars of that,
- 2:47and you still own absolutely nothing at the end of the day.
- 2:51Ninety grand!
- 2:52While the owners of that master can take that same five hundred thousand dollar
- 2:56annual stream, apply a conservative twelve to eighteen times multiple,
- 3:01and instantly value that catalog as a six million to nine million dollar investable
- 3:06asset.
- 3:07That is a life-altering difference.
- 3:10And you can borrow against a nine million dollar asset!
- 3:13You can't borrow against a ninety thousand dollar royalty statement that the label
- 3:18is still recouping their marketing costs from.
- 3:21This is about masters, publishing, and sync licensing all running in separate lanes.
- 3:28If your song gets picked up for a Netflix trailer, you want to collect both the
- 3:33master use fee and the synchronization fee, not just watch the label take sixty
- 3:39percent of it.
- 3:41Exactly.
- 3:42And we have to be realistic about the market timing here.
- 3:44During the catalog gold rush in 2021, multiples were peaking near twenty-five times
- 3:50net publisher's share.
- 3:51Now they've cooled down to that twelve to eighteen times range.
- 3:54So this isn't about trying to make a quick flip in a bubble; it's about building
- 3:58long-term, active value.
- 4:01That's generational wealth, man.
- 4:03In my community in New Orleans, we talk about passing things down.
- 4:07If your paperwork is clean, those rights are a physical asset you can leave to your
- 4:12kids.
- 4:12If the paperwork is sloppy, you just left them a decades-long lawsuit.
- 4:18So let's give the listeners the actual playbook.
- 4:20If you're an indie artist listening to this right now, there are six concrete things
- 4:24you can do this week.
- 4:25No excuses.
- 4:26First, register with a Performing Rights Organization like ASCAP,
- 4:31BMI, or SESAC.
- 4:32But here is the trap: most artists only register as a writer.
- 4:36You have to claim both the writer share AND the publisher share,
- 4:40or you are leaving fifty percent of your performance royalties on the table.
- 4:45Man, I made that mistake early on.
- 4:47To get that publisher share, you need to set up a publishing LLC.
- 4:52It costs anywhere from seventy-five to three hundred dollars depending on your
- 4:56state.
- 4:57Once you set that up, you affiliate that LLC with your PRO.
- 5:01Now the publisher side actually flows to your company instead of disappearing into
- 5:07the black hole of unclaimed royalties.
- 5:11And when you distribute, don't just sign up for any service blindly.
- 5:15Use tools like DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby Pro that preserve your master
- 5:21ownership, instead of those backend deals that sneakily take a percentage of your
- 5:25master rights in exchange for "free" distribution.
- 5:30And please, for the love of your bank account, get split sheets in writing before
- 5:34the record leaves the studio.
- 5:35If you've got collaborators, define the split sheets, joint venture agreements,
- 5:40or co-publishing deals immediately.
- 5:43Don't wait until the song gets hot, because that's when everyone suddenly remembers
- 5:47writing the hook.
- 5:49And write down those splits and register the copyrights!
- 5:52Go to the U.S.
- 5:53Copyright Office website.
- 5:55A group registration for up to ten unpublished works costs fifty-five dollars.
- 6:00That fifty-five dollar receipt is your shield when someone tries to claim your song
- 6:04sounds too much like theirs.
- 6:07The final piece of the puzzle is SoundExchange.
- 6:10People confuse this with ASCAP or BMI, but SoundExchange collects the digital
- 6:15performance royalties on the master recording itself from non-interactive digital
- 6:20radio, like Pandora or SiriusXM.
- 6:24If you don't register there as both the rights owner and the performer,
- 6:28that money eventually gets redistributed to the major labels.
- 6:32This whole conversation takes me back to the Five Percent Nation principles.
- 6:36Knowledge of Self is the foundation.
- 6:38In the music business, Knowledge of Self means knowing exactly what you own,
- 6:43what you are owed, and who controls the splits.
- 6:46Supreme Mathematics starts with Knowledge, and if you don't have the knowledge of
- 6:50your own rights, you are just a passenger in your own career.
- 6:54That's deep, Calvin.
- 6:55But let's keep it real here.
- 6:57Independence sounds great on paper, but owning one hundred percent of a master that
- 7:01nobody is listening to is just owning one hundred percent of zero.
- 7:06Without marketing, distribution structure, and absolute administrative discipline,
- 7:12those master rights are just dead weight on a hard drive.
- 7:16And what about the producers?
- 7:17As an artist, you think you own the record, but if the beat splits are sloppy,
- 7:22if the samples aren't cleared, or if you don't have a signed producer agreement,
- 7:26you do not fully own that master.
- 7:29The producer's drum loop can hold your entire release hostage.
- 7:34So let's leave the audience with a real challenge instead of just talking.
- 7:38If you have ten thousand monthly listeners on Spotify right now,
- 7:42the question you need to ask yourself tonight is not "how do I get to fifty
- 7:46thousand?"
- 7:47It is: which of these six rights-holder steps have I neglected,
- 7:52and can I claim them this week before the money starts moving without me?
- 7:55Peace out, everyone.
- 7:58Peace.
- 7:59Stay independent.
- 8:01Stay lit.
