Latest / Twin Cities Territory / 🚨 Walker Jenkins arrives! Twins call up top prospect with hopes fading
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: He's here. Finally, he's here. We brought the opening music
- 0:10Speaker 1: back for the occasion. Walker Jenkins has been called up
- 0:14Speaker 1: to the Minnesota Twins. Breaking news here on this day.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm not going to say what day because I will
- 0:20Speaker 1: admit we are recording this in expectation of him getting
- 0:24Speaker 1: the call up. So we are reacting live. but also
- 0:27Speaker 1: reacting a little early. But we've thought for weeks that
- 0:32Speaker 1: it was going to happen or might happen. There's been
- 0:35Speaker 1: reasons to say yes, reasons to say no. But with
- 0:37Speaker 1: the Twins now six games under. 500, four games out
- 0:40Speaker 1: on the wild card, six and a half out in
- 0:41Speaker 1: the central, 28 games to go, the Twins have decided
- 0:45Speaker 1: let's give the kid a chance and see if he
- 0:46Speaker 1: can be the spark to get this team back in
- 0:49Speaker 1: contention here to the end. Dan, how did we finally
- 0:53Speaker 1: end up here?
- 0:55Speaker 2: I mean, he made it. impossible to say no. And,
- 0:58Speaker 2: but I love that we use that montage because, you know,
- 1:01Speaker 2: I think the twins are hopeful. You know, we saw
- 1:03Speaker 2: the Kirby buckets and Rod Curry. Yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 3: There's a lot of first rounders in there.
- 1:09Speaker 2: And I think the twins are hopeful that one day
- 1:11Speaker 2: he'll be among that group of like all time greats. Um,
- 1:14Speaker 2: but he made this impossible to say no by just
- 1:18Speaker 2: hitting and hitting and hitting. We know that there are
- 1:21Speaker 2: five tools there. We know he can play defense. I
- 1:23Speaker 2: think also the defense, um, we saw on Wednesday night
- 1:25Speaker 2: probably played into this a little bit just, but the
- 1:29Speaker 2: timing of Byron Buxton getting dinged up, you know, that
- 1:32Speaker 2: they weren't going to make that move on the road.
- 1:35Speaker 2: They were not going to fly Walker Jenkins across the
- 1:37Speaker 2: country for a game to fly him across the country
- 1:40Speaker 2: and get home at five in the morning afterwards. That's
- 1:42Speaker 2: not like, you know, like especially because they were going
- 1:46Speaker 2: to see how Buxton was doing. Buxton was supposed to
- 1:48Speaker 2: be off on Wednesday, no matter what that was already
- 1:51Speaker 2: in the plans. So I think like, The guys just
- 1:55Speaker 2: made it to where they have to say yes because
- 1:58Speaker 2: he homered again on Wednesday night. That's his eighth home
- 2:01Speaker 2: run in August. I don't know the up-to-the-minute numbers, but
- 2:06Speaker 2: he's been ridiculous in August. His average is over 400.
- 2:09Speaker 2: His slug is through the roof over 700, I believe.
- 2:14Speaker 2: He's showing them that the power is real. I still
- 2:17Speaker 2: will contend that a lot of those fly balls to
- 2:19Speaker 2: the left are not going to be home runs in
- 2:21Speaker 2: the big leagues. St. Paul, the home run on Wednesday
- 2:24Speaker 2: night was 96-6 off the bat. But I still think
- 2:27Speaker 2: that probably gets down. Maybe it hits the wall, something
- 2:30Speaker 2: like that. But he's just proven everything he can. The
- 2:36Speaker 2: only question that really exists on him is he still
- 2:40Speaker 2: hasn't played 300 professional games in his career. And he
- 2:43Speaker 2: started in 2023. And I know that was a big
- 2:46Speaker 2: thing for them. I mean, I get it. You want
- 2:48Speaker 2: to make sure he's ready. And it's hard not to
- 2:50Speaker 2: look at it because he's got these tools. He's got
- 2:53Speaker 2: the fangs, and it seems like he's learning how to
- 2:56Speaker 2: use them right now. I think that when you get
- 2:59Speaker 2: to that point, especially with the need there, it adds
- 3:04Speaker 2: up all to the yes answer finally.
- 3:08Speaker 1: For those of you who are still getting familiar with him,
- 3:12Speaker 1: Walker Jenkins is 21 years old. He was the Twins'
- 3:15Speaker 1: first-round pick in 2023, fifth overall out of North Carolina.
- 3:20Speaker 1: He also saves children. We've seen that on the field.
- 3:23Speaker 1: There was a famous episode earlier this season where standing
- 3:27Speaker 1: out with the kids before the game, the kid had
- 3:28Speaker 1: an episode, fainted or something, and Jenkins caught him, attended
- 3:33Speaker 1: to him right away. It was a great moment.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Ran him off the field like a paramedic. Yes. That
- 3:39Speaker 2: was June 30th. Like it was nothing.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Dan mentioned his ridiculous August. He's hitting. 411 with a
- 3:44Speaker 1: 1.283 OPS, eight homers, 13 RBIs in 18 games. And
- 3:46Speaker 1: it seems like Every time the Twins have a rough night,
- 3:54Speaker 1: he is in St. Paul or playing for St. Paul
- 3:57Speaker 1: doing something amazing, including last night. He literally, as the
- 4:00Speaker 1: Twins were losing to the A's on Wednesday night, he
- 4:04Speaker 1: was hitting home runs in St.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Paul.
- 4:06Speaker 1: They're on a lefty-lefty oppo blast, as the Saints were
- 4:10Speaker 1: all too keen to point out. But, Tyler, we talked
- 4:14Speaker 1: about it on our last two shows.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:16Speaker 1: This is a team that said at the trade deadline,
- 4:18Speaker 1: we're going to make a push. We're going to invest
- 4:20Speaker 1: in this roster. We're going to try to make it
- 4:22Speaker 1: to the playoffs. This was the last obvious lever available
- 4:26Speaker 1: to them to try to make that happen, and it
- 4:28Speaker 1: seemed like it should be inevitable, and now here we are.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's time to see what he's about. He's
- 4:36Speaker 3: tearing the cover off the baseball, like Dan's mentioned a
- 4:38Speaker 3: few times. As long as the health's there, there was
- 4:42Speaker 3: no reason to.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Not do this. You need a body. You need a
- 4:45Speaker 1: guy that you.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Can trust to put out in center field for the
- 4:48Speaker 3: rest of the season at this point. You know, you
- 4:50Speaker 3: hope Byron's ready. You know, it makes it where you
- 4:52Speaker 3: can DH Byron if you need to. You can do
- 4:54Speaker 3: things and manipulate the roster. But he's a power bat.
- 4:58Speaker 3: He's fast.
- 4:58Speaker 2: He can throw.
- 4:59Speaker 3: He can do everything that you need. And it's a spark.
- 5:02Speaker 3: It's all those guys in the locker room are going
- 5:03Speaker 3: to be so pumped for him to be there. It's
- 5:06Speaker 3: going to be an exciting time, you know. And, you know,
- 5:08Speaker 3: I would personally, I would much rather get called up
- 5:10Speaker 3: to my home stadium than have to take a red
- 5:12Speaker 3: eye to Sacramento, you know, to fly back home like
- 5:14Speaker 3: Dan mentioned. It's kind of the worlds have come together
- 5:19Speaker 3: right here perfectly. He's going to have to drive 10
- 5:22Speaker 3: minutes to get to the stadium, see all the familiar
- 5:25Speaker 3: faces from spring training again. The hope for me as
- 5:30Speaker 3: someone who's been in those situations is he gets comfortable
- 5:33Speaker 3: as quickly as possible, get with the coaches, figure out
- 5:37Speaker 3: your routine, what do you like to do before the games,
- 5:39Speaker 3: things like that. Treat it like a normal day at
- 5:42Speaker 3: the baseball field, other than the fact that there's going
- 5:44Speaker 3: to be a lot of very excited people to see
- 5:46Speaker 3: you there. I'm sure there's going to be plenty of
- 5:49Speaker 3: folks with signs and things. It's going to be electric
- 5:53Speaker 3: for them, and it's going to be exciting. And on
- 5:55Speaker 3: top of that, it's a huge series with huge meaning
- 5:58Speaker 3: for the rest of this season. It's all the things
- 6:02Speaker 3: you could want as a baseball fan and as a
- 6:04Speaker 3: baseball player kind of culminating together here. It's going to
- 6:07Speaker 3: be a pretty cool moment once he goes on that
- 6:09Speaker 3: field Friday night.
- 6:12Speaker 1: This will be the second notable call-up for the Twins
- 6:15Speaker 1: this summer after Kaelin Culpepper earlier this month, who also
- 6:18Speaker 1: had a tough first assignment going to Milwaukee. Jenkins, obviously,
- 6:21Speaker 1: will have to take on the AL Central leading White
- 6:24Speaker 1: Sox starting Friday night. But we talked at the time, Dan,
- 6:28Speaker 1: about why Culpepper wears Jenkins. Some of the chatter was
- 6:33Speaker 1: around not wanting to have two rookies on the team
- 6:35Speaker 1: at the same time. Culpepper has certainly... I would say
- 6:38Speaker 1: exceeded most of their expectations. There's been, you know, some,
- 6:41Speaker 1: some issues with strikeouts, maybe some defensive issues as well,
- 6:44Speaker 1: but hitting over 300, I think still, or at least
- 6:47Speaker 1: right around there.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Uh, monster Homer on Wednesday night. Does that, does that
- 6:53Speaker 1: help the twins here and how they kind of think
- 6:55Speaker 1: about Jenkins?
- 6:57Speaker 2: I mean, I, I, again, I think the need is
- 6:59Speaker 2: the greatest thing, but absolutely that you're not nursing, uh,
- 7:04Speaker 2: Kalen Culpepper and Kalen Culpepper is not just, needing a
- 7:08Speaker 2: little help. I mean, he's thriving. Like we've seen it.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Like he's, you know, consistently getting on base. When you
- 7:15Speaker 2: think that, uh, Kalen Culpepper has been in the major
- 7:17Speaker 2: leagues for 16 games. And I believe 10 or 11
- 7:22Speaker 2: of those were Padres, Brewers, Phillies, and Braves. Like this isn't,
- 7:27Speaker 2: he's not come up against weak competition and he's doing
- 7:30Speaker 2: what he's doing. Like it says a lot about who
- 7:33Speaker 2: he is. I had a really good, I wrote a
- 7:35Speaker 2: feature on him, um, on Thursday morning. And he, like,
- 7:40Speaker 2: we were just talking about the big moment and like,
- 7:43Speaker 2: he seems to be just capable of it. Like he
- 7:46Speaker 2: thrives with it. Derek Shelton had a great quote and said,
- 7:49Speaker 2: Derek Shelton admitted he stole it from Joe Madden, but
- 7:52Speaker 2: he said, when the, when the lights get bright, this
- 7:54Speaker 2: kid's going to like it. And, and, you know, I
- 7:57Speaker 2: asked Kalen Culpepper about that the first day he was up,
- 7:59Speaker 2: I asked him about it in San Diego, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 2: playing in front of 40,000 crowds and, being able to
- 8:04Speaker 2: make the right decision in the moment and that kind
- 8:06Speaker 2: of thing. And he said, you know what? He like, um,
- 8:09Speaker 2: he'd never played in front of 40,000 before, but he,
- 8:11Speaker 2: he had played in the NCAA tournament in 2024 and
- 8:15Speaker 2: they went to Arkansas. They went to Fayetteville where Arkansas
- 8:18Speaker 2: was number five and Kansas state swept that regional, including
- 8:23Speaker 2: beating Arkansas, Kalen Culpepper cycle. He went in the college
- 8:27Speaker 2: world series overall, or in the, between the regional and
- 8:30Speaker 2: the super regional. He went nine for 19 with 10
- 8:33Speaker 2: RBIs and six runs. So he's built for it. He's
- 8:36Speaker 2: shown that. I think that helps. Absolutely. You don't have
- 8:38Speaker 2: to worry about Walker Jenkins can come up and take
- 8:40Speaker 2: his lumps now. And Walker Jenkins playing good center field
- 8:44Speaker 2: defense will be a viable part of this. They need
- 8:47Speaker 2: a center fielder. They need someone to catch the ball.
- 8:50Speaker 2: They can put Luke Kieschel in the corner and keep
- 8:52Speaker 2: him in a spot where it's easier to make the
- 8:55Speaker 2: transition to outfield. It makes all the sense. But I'll
- 9:00Speaker 2: give some Walker Jenkins facts here in a minute because
- 9:02Speaker 2: I have a few just on what he is and
- 9:07Speaker 2: why he's so, I guess, sponsored like this.
- 9:14Speaker 4: One of the things that I wasn't very good at
- 9:16Speaker 4: was playing Major League Baseball. One of the things that
- 9:19Speaker 4: I'm really good at is sweating. Even now when I'm
- 9:22Speaker 4: not playing, I need hydration. I need to make sure
- 9:26Speaker 4: it's convenient. That's why I choose glutes.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Yep.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Quince electrolyte stick packs to the rescue, Kratts. They taste
- 9:34Speaker 5: great and the zero sugar options are stevia free. They're
- 9:37Speaker 5: keto approved, naturally sweetened with fermented rice. And like everything
- 9:40Speaker 5: Quince does, they're thoughtfully made and priced well at $ 20
- 9:43Speaker 5: for 30 servings. They're less than half of the leading brand.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Give your body what it really needs to stay hydrated.

- 10:07Speaker 5: This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or
- 10:09Speaker 5: prevent any disease.
- 10:14Speaker 1: The other side of this move is that now he's
- 10:17Speaker 1: on the 40-man roster. He's part of the union. If
- 10:19Speaker 1: there is a lockout next year, he is not eligible
- 10:23Speaker 1: to play in any minor leagues, Tyler. Obviously, that was
- 10:26Speaker 1: speculated as a reason. Twins clearly have gotten past that
- 10:30Speaker 1: one way or another. And how big a factor do
- 10:31Speaker 1: you think it is in a player's development?
- 10:34Speaker 3: I don't think at this point, health has been his issue.
- 10:38Speaker 3: It's not whether he's good or not. So I don't
- 10:41Speaker 3: think that would have too much of a bearing on anything.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Maybe they thought about it for a split second. But
- 10:47Speaker 3: in the moment now, especially, it doesn't matter. And at
- 10:50Speaker 3: the end of the day, he needs to get to
- 10:53Speaker 3: the big leagues to see if he's.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Got it or not. And you might as well do it.
- 10:57Speaker 3: And in my mind, hearing Dan talking about Culpepper, I
- 11:01Speaker 3: think that's a great thing to have. It's something I
- 11:03Speaker 3: had a lot of when I came up because I'm
- 11:06Speaker 3: sure people realize, but the 2012 draft class all kind
- 11:10Speaker 3: of came up through the minor leagues all the way together.
- 11:12Speaker 3: I'll call it the 10 to 12 group. we all
- 11:16Speaker 3: came up to the big leagues at the same time.
- 11:17Speaker 3: And so we all leaned on each other in moments
- 11:20Speaker 3: where it was just different. Like we were all learning
- 11:22Speaker 3: things on the fly, you know, getting to be a
- 11:24Speaker 3: big leaguer. And it's going to be a huge asset
- 11:26Speaker 3: for Jenkins to have a guy in Culpepper who just
- 11:30Speaker 3: got there, who's, he's still trying to figure it out,
- 11:32Speaker 3: but he can ask him the little questions, you know,
- 11:34Speaker 3: on the side to get comfortable quickly, you know, things that,
- 11:37Speaker 3: that maybe the common, you know, the player who's there
- 11:40Speaker 3: every day doesn't even think about, but it's figuring out
- 11:42Speaker 3: what time things happen, things like that. I really think
- 11:45Speaker 3: he'll be able to get comfortable quickly. It's just such
- 11:50Speaker 3: an exciting time. You know, you sit back afterwards. You
- 11:53Speaker 3: don't really remember what all happened. You've got to get,
- 11:56Speaker 3: you know, hear stories, rewatch videos, and have bats and whatever. But,
- 12:00Speaker 3: you know, it's just going to be cool. You know,
- 12:03Speaker 3: it's always fun to watch a guy make their debut,
- 12:05Speaker 3: regardless of who you are. If you're a fan, you're
- 12:07Speaker 3: a writer, you're an ex-player like myself. Like, all those
- 12:10Speaker 3: feelings are so real and raw. We can only hope
- 12:14Speaker 3: for a homer tonight. That would be pretty sweet. Just
- 12:19Speaker 3: have a great first day.
- 12:20Speaker 1: At the yard, man.
- 12:21Speaker 3: It's all you can ask for. It's a dream come
- 12:23Speaker 3: true at the end of the day. All other things aside,
- 12:27Speaker 3: who cares about the lockout?
- 12:29Speaker 2: Get to the big leagues.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Figure that out once it's over with.
- 12:32Speaker 3: 30 days isn't going to make a difference down the road.
- 12:35Speaker 1: And if there isn't a lockout or it's a short one,
- 12:38Speaker 1: then you get the debut jitters out of the way,
- 12:40Speaker 1: come to spring training, unquestioned major leader, and you're good
- 12:44Speaker 1: to go. Dan, you've got some facts about Walker Jenkins.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Let's hear them.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. So let's just talk about why he is
- 12:51Speaker 2: this guy, right? Look, the Twins, to get him, they
- 12:55Speaker 2: won the lottery. They didn't win it the whole way,
- 12:57Speaker 2: but they were 13th on the 2020. It was December 22,
- 13:01Speaker 2: I believe, is the first baseball lottery, draft lottery. They
- 13:05Speaker 2: were projected to pick 13th after the 2022 season. They won,
- 13:10Speaker 2: and they got knocked up to the fifth pick. So
- 13:13Speaker 2: even to be there to get Walker Jenkins was just
- 13:16Speaker 2: a stroke of luck. They were the team that moved
- 13:17Speaker 2: up the most that year. But their legendary scout, Mike Radcliffe,
- 13:24Speaker 2: was dying of pancreatic cancer. He was, I believe, in
- 13:28Speaker 2: remission at the time, but he was participating as much
- 13:32Speaker 2: as he could. And he went to the summer showcases.
- 13:35Speaker 2: He went to Phoenix. He saw him with the group.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And knowing there was a chance he wasn't going to
- 13:41Speaker 2: be around for the draft, and he didn't, he passed
- 13:43Speaker 2: away in February of 2023, I believe. It was either
- 13:47Speaker 2: January or February of 2023. But knowing he wasn't going
- 13:49Speaker 2: to be around, and knowing how enamored he was with
- 13:52Speaker 2: Walker Jenkins, he marked down eight on every tool that
- 13:57Speaker 2: Walker Jenkins had. Hit, run, field, arm. scouts don't do that. He,
- 14:04Speaker 2: he wanted to make a statement about what he believed
- 14:07Speaker 2: in this player. And they, they obviously change it a
- 14:10Speaker 2: little bit because he was doing it for emphasis, but, um, they're,
- 14:16Speaker 2: they're all time scout. The guy that's responsible for all
- 14:18Speaker 2: the people in that montage you saw, um, was adamant
- 14:23Speaker 2: that this was the guy and they were thrilled to
- 14:26Speaker 2: get him at five. Like they were hoping he fell
- 14:28Speaker 2: to them at five. Um, Top 15 prospect according to MLB.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I think Keith Law from the Athletic had him 16.
- 14:36Speaker 2: The tools are there. The talent's there. This is a
- 14:40Speaker 2: good player. You can understand why fans are clamoring for him.
- 14:42Speaker 2: He looks the part. He looks like Captain America. He
- 14:49Speaker 2: has not been healthy like Captain America. He has struggled
- 14:54Speaker 2: with the health, but we've seen him in an AC
- 14:57Speaker 2: joint in his shoulder cause him to miss five weeks
- 15:01Speaker 2: this year. He was at spring training and he only
- 15:04Speaker 2: played four games and he got a hamstring strain. He
- 15:07Speaker 2: had a hamstring strain last year. He had an ankle injury.
- 15:10Speaker 2: There's reasons why he's never played more than 84 games
- 15:13Speaker 2: in a season. But the need outweighs those desires to
- 15:18Speaker 2: see him get more time.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Yeah, the need is clearly there. Obviously, Byron Buxton hurt
- 15:24Speaker 1: right now. Luke Kieschel was playing center field Wednesday night.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And again, I think we said it, three or four
- 15:30Speaker 1: times in our last show, not Luke Kieschel's fault, but
- 15:33Speaker 1: the fateful ball that ended up costing the twins. The
- 15:36Speaker 1: game was one that, that may be somebody with a
- 15:38Speaker 1: little more experience in center field tracks down Walker Jenkins
- 15:41Speaker 1: may or may not qualify at this point is having
- 15:43Speaker 1: more experience in center field, but certainly at the, at
- 15:45Speaker 1: the lower levels he does, uh, the health is a concern,
- 15:49Speaker 1: but when it's on, it's, it's a sweet bat overall
- 15:51Speaker 1: hitting three Oh eight this year at triple a St.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Paul and Tyler, like it feels like it's, now that
- 15:59Speaker 1: you don't have to come from Rochester, New York to
- 16:01Speaker 1: get there, it's just like, it's just going to a
- 16:03Speaker 1: different ballpark. It's not even like a big move.
- 16:06Speaker 3: It's in your backyard. You don't even have to move apartments,
- 16:09Speaker 3: you know, whatever you've been staying. That's a, it's AAA
- 16:12Speaker 3: now for the twins is it's a pretty sweet setup.
- 16:15Speaker 3: You know, not to mention the field.
- 16:16Speaker 1: There's great.
- 16:17Speaker 3: I never played there as a home player, but got
- 16:19Speaker 3: to see it as a visitor and it's a great
- 16:21Speaker 3: place to play.
- 16:22Speaker 1: You get plenty of fans by no means. Is it
- 16:24Speaker 1: the same?
- 16:25Speaker 3: But it's going to be a lot of familiar faces,
- 16:27Speaker 3: I think, at the end of the day, which is invaluable. Like,
- 16:30Speaker 3: it's just having a familiarity going into a situation just
- 16:34Speaker 3: takes that little bit of stress away. You know, it's
- 16:37Speaker 3: people forget when we bounce around from level to level.
- 16:39Speaker 3: You know, when you're meeting these minor league organizations, you
- 16:42Speaker 3: don't see, you know, you see your coaches. But otherwise,
- 16:46Speaker 3: it's a whole new crowd of people. You're learning new
- 16:49Speaker 3: names and faces and layouts of stadiums and getting comfortable
- 16:52Speaker 3: and just everything that comes with being a baseball player.
- 16:55Speaker 3: And now it's like, Hey man, come on over here today.
- 16:59Speaker 3: And it's about that easy. And you show up to
- 17:02Speaker 3: the yard, you know, you go eat your same breakfast.
- 17:04Speaker 3: You don't, your routine basically doesn't change other than you
- 17:07Speaker 3: have a new parking spot. Um, you know, make sure
- 17:09Speaker 3: you don't park anybody else's when you get there today. But, um,
- 17:12Speaker 3: you know, it's, it's just one of those things, you know, it's,
- 17:16Speaker 3: it's a great setup. It's, it's the cards are laying
- 17:19Speaker 3: out perfectly. Um, You know, I can't say it enough.
- 17:21Speaker 3: It seems like the right place, right time. And so
- 17:24Speaker 3: much of baseball is that. It's being ready when the
- 17:27Speaker 3: time for your name to be called happens. And, you know,
- 17:31Speaker 3: just all we can hope for is to just do
- 17:34Speaker 3: what you've been doing for the last month. You know,
- 17:36Speaker 3: don't change anything. You know, wear your St. Paul gear underneath.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Nobody cares. Whatever you need to do to feel comfortable
- 17:44Speaker 3: in that lineup, like that's all that matters.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Well, it's a huge series and Walker Jenkins will be
- 17:50Speaker 1: a part of it. We'll be back with you on
