- 0:00Hello and welcome to Fostering Faith Today on episode 8 we'll be talking about gratitude.
- 0:08And so we thought that this topic was great during our church's 21 days of prayer as it
- 0:15puts you into a mindset really of what gratitude is.
- 0:20And gratitude really just shows you just your love and how thankful for what God has done
- 0:29for us.
- 0:30And so we thought that this would be a great podcast topic and it can help a lot of people
- 0:34how we are going to bring some practical tips into just bringing gratitude into your day.
- 0:39Alright, so my first question for you is mom, what is gratitude to you?
- 0:46Gratitude to me is just an expression of thankfulness is a spirit of thankfulness is just giving
- 0:55thanks to God.
- 0:57What's thankfulness?
- 0:58What's gratitude to you?
- 1:01Just thankfulness that whatever you got and feel like what you're thankful for and everything.
- 1:09Okay.
- 1:10I think gratitude depends on acknowledging who God is and what he's done.
- 1:15It's an emotion not dependent upon another person or on nature or anything like that.
- 1:24It is just life itself is such a gracious gift from God that once you realize that concept
- 1:35of what all he's given, like your heart just is just overwhelmed with gratitude.
- 1:43Okay, my second question is who shows the most gratitude in the Bible do you think?
- 1:50Oh.
- 1:53I would say probably that what's the one guy that asks for wisdom?
- 1:57Who is that one guy?
- 1:59Not Peter.
- 2:01King Solomon?
- 2:02Was he a king?
- 2:03Was he a king?
- 2:04Yeah, was he King Solomon? And several others his Dad King David
- 2:05No, that was the bad king, right?
- 2:06No, that's him.
- 2:07I knew it.
- 2:08I'm just like that.
- 2:09What book did he write?
- 2:10Psalms he wrote some of it
- 2:11Mm-hmm.
- 2:12I knew it. . 45 00:02:22,760 --> 00:02:28,560 And then do you know of any Psalms that talk about Thanksgiving?
- 2:28No, but it was a lot.
- 2:32It was a lot.
- 2:34And so just a couple of Psalms, you know, you have Psalm 56 and there's Psalm 100 and
- 2:44it says, Shout for joy to the Lord all the earth worship in the Lord with gladness.
- 2:51Come before him singing with joy, acknowledging that Lord is God.
- 2:55He has made us and we are his.
- 2:58We are his people, the shepherd of his pasture, the sheep of his pasture, enter his gates
- 3:04with Thanksgiving and go into his courts with praise, give thanks to him and praise
- 3:08his name for God is good.
- 3:11The unfailing love continues forever and his faithfulness continues to each generation.
- 3:18I think that whenever we look at that, the three verbs in there is his shout, worship
- 3:25and come before him, greet him from afar and we worship him and we come into where he's
- 3:34at and the people of God are welcomed into his presence and you're just filled with
- 3:41joy.
- 3:42Our approach is joyful because of what he has done for us.
- 3:46We know him by name.
- 3:49He made us, he's redeemed us.
- 3:51He is our shepherd.
- 3:53We are his people and he just, he protects us.
- 3:58As you look into verse four and five, it talks about the privilege of just increasing that
- 4:04closeness as we enter his gates, we give him Thanksgiving and we praise his name and that
- 4:11just brings a smile to my face just because we get to praise him.
- 4:15We get to call him out and we just get to worship him and we just can review everything
- 4:22that we've done.
- 4:24We let our mind and heart just come out and there's no strings attached and it's just
- 4:31free and just a wonderful experience.
- 4:34All right.
- 4:35My third question for you is why do you think God gave us so much stuff that we can be thankful
- 4:40for?
- 4:41Because he's a good God.
- 4:45He's generous.
- 4:47He loves us and with that abundant love, he wants us to have an amazing life and those
- 4:59that are, you know, those that he trusts with little, he'll give much and what materialistic
- 5:08things we don't count as, you know, stuff.
- 5:12I mean, he's given us life.
- 5:16He's given us breath.
- 5:18Yeah.
- 5:19What would be some practical ways that kids could start off their day before they're,
- 5:27you know, getting ready to go to school?
- 5:29What would be some practical tips for teens to start off with an attitude of gratitude?
- 5:46Like what they like, or you can do at the end of the day, like what you're thankful
- 5:51for that you did that day or what you got that day.
- 5:55A gratitude journal is something that can be done on your phone, that can be done on
- 5:59a piece of paper.
- 6:00It would be, you know, cheap, free even since you already have a phone and just do it in
- 6:05your notes section.
- 6:06And I think sometimes in the season of life, you could have, you could write down the same
- 6:1210 things every day because that's the only positive things that you have in your life.
- 6:18And if you need to focus on those 10 things for a month, two months, six months, you just
- 6:25keep focusing on those.
- 6:27I, you know, I don't think it has to be something different every day.
- 6:30I know that I do have patients do that in clinic.
- 6:34And so if they're down, they're discouraged, they don't see the positive in anything.
- 6:40We have them journal, you know, 10 things that they're grateful for.
- 6:44And it could be a cup of coffee.
- 6:46It could be a sheet.
- 6:47It could be the floor because some people don't even have beds that just the fact that
- 6:53they got to wake up, the fact that they are hearing, you know, just for our listeners,
- 6:58this podcast, I mean, thankful for the internet, thankful for our phone.
- 7:01Thank you that we can be able to reach, you know, millions of people across the globe
- 7:07to, you know, to spread the word and just sight.
- 7:11I mean, just little things, I mean, because those are so huge in someone else's life.
- 7:16And I have a sign that's up in my office that says, I remembered the things that I have
- 7:22now is what I prayed for before.
- 7:24And just the little things that we take for granted of is just a treasure to somebody
- 7:30else.
- 7:31And just paying attention to details and, you know, being able to hear, being able to
- 7:35see, being able to speak is such a gift that many don't even have.
- 7:43It's a privilege.
- 7:45And having that, that attitude of just thankfulness, it really just sets your tone for the day.
- 7:53Because if you start off your day, what happens whenever you get up in a bad mood?
- 7:57What happens?
- 7:58Your day does not go good.
- 8:02Like it doesn't go too good.
- 8:03You just keep that bad thing going.
- 8:07And so what, so if someone wakes up on, you know, Thursday and their mom is hollering
- 8:13at them, get up, get up.
- 8:14And, you know, that just sets the tone for the day.
- 8:18What advice would you give to a parent to help their kids start off their day?
- 8:26Have a kid set off a nice alarm.
- 8:29Not the really loud ones, but like the ones that are more like peaceful.
- 8:36And then my next question is for you is why is gratitude so important?
- 8:46I think that gratitude is so important in just every, every aspect of life.
- 8:55I mean, just, it's, I'm just so thankful.
- 9:01And then once you don't have much and you have more than what you did, just you're so
- 9:07thankful.
- 9:08I mean, and you can even meet like people that are unsheltered, they have, you know,
- 9:15they're even thankful.
- 9:16They're thankful for, you know, all the things that they do have, what even the things that
- 9:22have been taken from them, a lot of times we can even be thankful from the closed doors
- 9:26that God has done.
- 9:27We can be thankful in the difficult times and maintaining a grateful and gratitude heart
- 9:33during trials and hardships.
- 9:36You know, we read in James for class this week and he said, you know, give thanks in
- 9:42all those trials because he's building our character.
- 9:46He's building situations and our heart posture.
- 9:51And so even in the midst of trials, you know, thanking him that he's walking us through
- 9:54those trials, thinking him that, you know, he's never left us.
- 9:58He's never forsaken us.
- 10:00And I do think that just having, you know, us as a parents setting the tone for our kids
- 10:07and we're just so thankful for our kiddos and, you know, there's so many, you know, parents
- 10:14out there that want kids and can't have them.
- 10:18And I'm just so thankful that I have the ability to have a daughter and that is just one thing
- 10:25that I'm so, so thankful for.
- 10:28And then middle of the night, whenever she's sick, whenever she has sporting events, whenever,
- 10:31you know, I just feel super annoyed that I gotta go to do one more thing.
- 10:35And then I do a heart check and I'm like, oh my gosh, like, I'm so thankful that I have
- 10:40that opportunity to be busy.
- 10:42And so just looking for the positive, because there's always a positive for a negative.
- 10:48And I do feel like that can really change your heart posture studies even show that
- 10:52if you have a, you know, an attitude of gratitude, your depression, you know, drops significantly,
- 10:58your anxiety drops, and you really can focus on it just time and time again.
- 11:05People come in like I, I really didn't under I didn't know that this was going to change
- 11:10my perspective that much.
- 11:12Because when we're filled with that love and joy from him, we are just so full of, of just
- 11:22thanks.
- 11:23Okay.
- 11:24So my last question is, what is your favorite thing to kind of like show off that you have
- 11:30gratitude for?
- 11:33Like an item?
- 11:34I don't know.
- 11:35What do you mean?
- 11:36Like, say like someone just got this new thing like OMG, I just got this best like lotion.
- 11:47It's so cool.
- 11:48I'm so thankful for it.
- 11:49Like what's your favorite thing that you have?
- 11:55Like something that I can physically touch, I mean, you, your dad, I mean, the people that
- 12:08he's allowed in my life, but only one.
- 12:16I would have to say my Bible.
- 12:24I mean, that physically something to grasp.
- 12:29I'm so thankful that I get to read scripture every day.
- 12:33It's his love letter to me.
- 12:35He I could read the same passage 422 times and he shows me something different every,
- 12:42every time that I read it and I get to meet him in, in, in here in my prayer room and we
- 12:48get to talk every morning and he just gets to show me so many things.
- 12:52And so bar none, my Bibles are my, I'm so thankful for them.
- 13:03And that because I mean, they really have just changed my life.
- 13:08And so what would be something that you could help the listeners be more grateful for?
- 13:18Just a small things are really good to be thankful for because not a lot of people have
- 13:23them.
- 13:24And it's really good to just think of the little like say like, oh my gosh, like your
- 13:27friend just said, oh, I'm just got some new shoes or whatever.
- 13:31You're like, but I want those.
- 13:33But then just think like, what do you have that like not a lot of people have like house,
- 13:40water, food, friends and family.
- 13:44Not a lot of people have a lot of those things.
- 13:47Things that we take for granted.
- 13:49Yeah.
- 13:50Yeah, we're so fortunate in many areas of our life and what we have here in the United
- 13:57States compared to what others have in different, in different parts of the world.
- 14:02I think that we were very, we're very fortunate.
- 14:06And I think that would be a great way to end the podcast is just just thinking about and
- 14:12looking at all of what we have an access to here in the United States.
- 14:18I think that we're so fortunate to live in America and just just have a God that we
- 14:25serve that loves us so much that just fills us up with our love and our joy.
- 14:32And so I think that maybe we should bow our heads and pray.
- 14:35Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for today.
- 14:38Thank you so much for yesterday.
- 14:40Thank you for the ability to spread your word.
- 14:42Thank you that we are going to be fishers of men and not watchers of the aquarium.
- 14:47Thank you that you are changing our hearts.
- 14:49Thank you that you were renewing our minds.
- 14:51Thank you that you love us so much.
- 14:53Thank you for the gratitude that we have in our hearts because of the love that you have
- 14:57given us.
- 14:58Thank you for our life.
- 14:59Thank you for your grace.
- 15:00Thank you for your mercy.
- 15:01Thank you for everything that you've done for us.
- 15:03Thank you that you are a God that is love.
- 15:07you for everything that you do. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Amen. And so stay tuned
- 15:13next week as we pray over our next topic and have a great week. Bye!
