- 0:00This week, I felt the Lord drop this word in
- 0:04my heart right after I had preached the message
- 0:07on the Trinity, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- 0:11And as I have been, because I have been continuing
- 0:15to meditate, to chew the cud on the unity of
- 0:21the Trinity and what that means for my life.
- 0:24And as I've been doing that, he brought me back
- 0:27to Philippians. chapter 4. And when I read this,
- 0:33you're going to be like, oh, here she goes again.
- 0:35I've got to rejoice. I've got to give thanks.
- 0:39We're actually not going to focus on that part
- 0:42of it, but what we need is context for what I
- 0:46do feel the Lord is speaking. And so verse 4
- 0:50begins it, rejoice in the Lord. In fact, I was
- 0:56going around singing the song. How many of you
- 0:58know the song? Rejoice in the Lord. We can get
- 1:01a round going here. Okay, good job. That's it.
- 1:07That would be kind of fun. You could practice
- 1:09it in our small groups and then have all our
- 1:11small groups up here going in rounds. Rejoice
- 1:14in the Lord always. I will say it again. Rejoice.
- 1:19Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord
- 1:23is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but
- 1:27in every situation, by prayer and petition, with
- 1:31thanksgiving, present your request to God. And
- 1:36the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,
- 1:41It doesn't make sense that you would have peace
- 1:44in your situation, right? It transcends all human
- 1:48understanding, will guard your hearts and your
- 1:52minds in Christ Jesus. So we get, we're supposed
- 1:58to rejoice and give thanks. And sometimes that's
- 2:03hard to do. But here's what the Lord just jumped
- 2:08out at me in the spirit. And I believe that it's
- 2:11a word for you. The Lord is near. That one little
- 2:20sentence changes everything. The Lord is near.
- 2:28And I think when we find ourselves having difficulty
- 2:32rejoicing and giving thanks, when anxiety begins
- 2:37to rise in our hearts, what I'm seeing from this
- 2:41is that we have forgotten something. The Lord
- 2:45is near. And so this morning, now, here's a little
- 2:51bit of Bible interpretation. Because you can,
- 2:56if you have the version, like on my app, I have
- 2:59my Bible versions, right? And I can click on
- 3:02it and it will give me all the definitions of
- 3:04the words, of the original word. And you have
- 3:09to be careful in that because you could choose
- 3:12whichever one gives you the goosebumps. And so
- 3:16this is why we have to know context, we have
- 3:19to know history and all, and verbiage and grammar
- 3:22and all that fun stuff. But as I was studying
- 3:25this, I was like, Lord, all of my points are
- 3:29just right out of this word right here. I felt
- 3:32like God was speaking through them. And so today,
- 3:36that's exactly what we're going to do. We are
- 3:39going to look at what the word near means. You
- 3:47say, well, this seems very obvious. Something
- 3:51is near, it's near. If it's far, it's far. We're
- 3:56going to go a little deeper than that today.
- 3:58Because I think what happens is we become very
- 4:01preoccupied with our problems, our situations.
- 4:08And suddenly the presence that is known to us
- 4:13is the presence of our problems. And that becomes
- 4:17more real to us. Than the presence of the living
- 4:22God. Who should be near to us. And so here we
- 4:28go. Ready? This is something that the disciples.
- 4:33It's a beautiful picture, and I love preaching
- 4:35the road to Emmaus. It's such an amazing passage
- 4:39of after the death and resurrection, the disciples
- 4:43are on the road that day, Resurrection Sunday,
- 4:46and they're discouraged, and they're disillusioned
- 4:51because our king has died. So they're going home,
- 4:56and Jesus appears on the road, and they're so
- 4:59preoccupied with their problem. Everything we've
- 5:04lived for for years has fallen into disarray
- 5:07and scattered. And that's all that they can see.
- 5:11And when Jesus appears and begins not just walking
- 5:14with them, but unfolding scripture to them, they
- 5:18do not recognize the Lord is near. And it's not
- 5:23until they're seated at the table and, oh, wait
- 5:27a minute. We've been here before with this person.
- 5:30We've sat around a table before with a person.
- 5:34The Lord is near. He's at our table. And their
- 5:38eyes are opened. And they go and they back to
- 5:41Jerusalem to tell of Jesus. What happened? They
- 5:45were preoccupied with their problems and didn't
- 5:48know Jesus is near. And so when we look at this
- 5:52sentence, this little sentence will change everything
- 5:55for us. The Lord is near. The Father, the Son,
- 6:01the Holy Spirit is near to you. So do not be
- 6:08anxious about anything, but just begin to lay
- 6:11your request at his feet. And so what does it
- 6:15mean that the Lord is near? Here's definition
- 6:18number one. I just about like went into revival
- 6:23reading this one because I'm a very work -oriented
- 6:26person. But the very first definition of nearness
- 6:29is a Sabbath day walk. How many of you have heard
- 6:35that phrase? It's used in Acts once to describe
- 6:40the distance from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem.
- 6:44A Sabbath's walk distance. It is a term that
- 6:50is used within the Jewish people that describes
- 6:56how far on the Sabbath day they can journey.
- 7:02So Darla lives in Decatur, and she drives over
- 7:08every Sunday. That's a 45 -minute drive. And
- 7:13she's here every week, except when it's icy and
- 7:18snowy. She would not have been able to come to
- 7:23church here on the Sabbath because she is more
- 7:27than a Sabbath's walk distance from this church.
- 7:33So on the Sabbath, it was intended to keep them
- 7:36close to home to be at rest on the Sabbath. The
- 7:44Lord is a Sabbath day walk from you. And so often
- 7:52in our difficulty, we're striving in our own
- 7:55strength, in our own understanding to make something
- 7:59happen in life. And we sang it this morning,
- 8:04didn't we? I'm just going to sit here. I'm just
- 8:08going to worship. That's all I'm going to do.
- 8:11I'm going to worship. I'm going to be still.
- 8:15Out of the place of rest. Now, here's a verse
- 8:21in Joshua chapter 3. This is one of the passages
- 8:24in which they get the Sabbath's day's walk. And
- 8:30the distance is about 2 ,000 cubits. Anybody
- 8:36out the top of your head know what that is? Anybody?
- 8:40Far? No looking up. I had to look it up. It's
- 8:45just over half a mile. So you could not travel
- 8:48further than half a mile on the Sabbath. And
- 8:53so we get this from Joshua chapter 3 verse 4.
- 8:57Now Moses had died. Joshua's leading the Israelites.
- 9:01And they come to the Jordan River. And what is
- 9:06on the other side of the Jordan River? The promised
- 9:11land. They've got to cross this river to get
- 9:16over to the promised land. And so in chapter
- 9:183 of Joshua, they're receiving instruction. When
- 9:23you see the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your
- 9:27God. The Ark of the Covenant was the presence
- 9:32of God for Israel. And they followed it all through
- 9:36the wilderness, right? When you see the ark of
- 9:40the Lord your God and the Levitical priests carrying
- 9:44it, you are to move out from your positions and
- 9:50follow it. That was their sign to get up and
- 9:53go. Then you will know which way to go since
- 9:59you have never been this way before. but keep
- 10:02a distance of about 2 ,000 cubits between you
- 10:07and the ark. Now catch this phrase, do not go
- 10:12near it. This was not a distance given so they
- 10:20would be close to the ark. It was a distance
- 10:23given to separate them from the ark. Think about
- 10:29it. A million people. And if they were all crowding
- 10:34around it, would they even be able to see it?
- 10:38No. So they had to create distance so all of
- 10:41the community could see the ark when it was moving
- 10:44with the priest. I think this is an amazing idea,
- 10:48though, because in the Old Testament we have
- 10:51this directive. Keep a distance of half a mile.
- 10:55And this is a circumference all around. A radius,
- 10:59a half a mile, all the way around. You wouldn't,
- 11:04you, I mean, in a lot of ways, some of them wouldn't,
- 11:08even in that half mile, wouldn't be able to see
- 11:10the ark. They just know, oh, all of those people
- 11:15are getting up and going. I guess it's time to
- 11:17get up and go. And here's the power of the new
- 11:23covenant. Jesus says on the cross, it is finished.
- 11:31And in the moment he says it is finished, the
- 11:37veil before the holy of holies is torn. And the
- 11:44invitation is given. No longer do you need to
- 11:48keep a distance of half a mile. Come on in. Get
- 11:54up close. Get into the Holy of Holies. The Lord
- 11:59is near to you. The Lord is near to you. Praise
- 12:04the Lord. And so we have passages like Psalm
- 12:0862 verse 5. Yes, my soul find rest in God. My
- 12:17hope comes from Him. Truly, he is my rock and
- 12:21my salvation. He is my fortress. I will not be
- 12:27shaken. Why? Because the Lord is near. My salvation
- 12:33and my honor depend on God. He is my mighty rock,
- 12:38my refuge. Trust in him. I think this is a good
- 12:42phrase because it goes right along with our Philippians
- 12:44phrase. Trust him at all times. You people, you
- 12:51people trust him. Pour out your hearts to him
- 12:57for God is our refuge. He is near to you. Psalm
- 13:0446 says the same thing beginning in verse 1.
- 13:08God is our refuge and strength and ever -present
- 13:13help in time of trouble. The Lord is near to
- 13:17you. Though the earth give way. We're not going
- 13:25to fear. Though the mountains fall into the heart
- 13:30of the sea. Though its waters roar and foam.
- 13:34And the mountains quake with their surging. Isn't
- 13:38that sometimes what your circumstance is feeling
- 13:40like? God, everything is falling apart. Everything
- 13:44is in turmoil. Everything is foaming and surging.
- 13:49Fear not. There is a river whose streams make
- 13:55glad the city of God. A place where the Most
- 14:01High dwells. Oh, my friends, you are, say, I
- 14:07am the temple of the Holy Spirit. Where the Most
- 14:15High dwells, He lives in us. Oh, there is a river
- 14:23whose streams make you glad. I feel like we should
- 14:28be a little more excited by this news. There
- 14:31is a river. A river of His presence. And you
- 14:39don't have to come here to find it. It comes
- 14:42within you because he dwells within you. You
- 14:45are the river in your workplace. You are the
- 14:48river in the schools. You are the river in Washington,
- 14:51D .C., Kathy. You are the river. And everything
- 14:57you touch should be made glad. For the Most High
- 15:02dwells in you. God is within her. She will not
- 15:06fall. God will help her at the break of day.
- 15:11Man, the Lord is within you. Be at rest. His
- 15:17nearness is that of rest. Not striving, but rest.
- 15:24And so some of you just need to take a deep breath.
- 15:30Yeah, I'm being serious. You really do. You need
- 15:34to just take a deep breath. Why? We sang it today.
- 15:39The breath that I breathe, I breathe because
- 15:43of him. And so we take just a deep breath and
- 15:47be at peace and be at rest. The Lord is near.
- 15:54The Lord is near. The second definition here.
- 15:58Oh, this is good. Are you ready? It is almost
- 16:02time. It is almost time. I feel like we need
- 16:11to become with God like my grandsons. Oh my goodness.
- 16:18I know that parents joke about this all the time,
- 16:22but my grandkids know how to take it to another
- 16:24level since... The discovery of Google Maps and
- 16:28the following of the blue line, they can see
- 16:30it from the back seat. I'm not kidding you. Like,
- 16:34I will tell them how much, how many more hours.
- 16:37And like three minutes later, how many more hours?
- 16:41The whole way to Springfield, Missouri. Am I
- 16:44exaggerating, Darren? He's videoing this so he
- 16:47can send it to my grandkids, aren't you? We got
- 16:53it. into the vehicle after dropping them off
- 16:55and driving home alone it's like oh nobody is
- 16:59asking how much longer listen we need to get
- 17:03a little bit like that with God God is it almost
- 17:06time are we almost there I'm imagining the Israelites
- 17:10in the wilderness are we almost there yet God
- 17:13are we almost to the promised land it's been
- 17:1740 years Surely we're almost there by now. The
- 17:24Lord is near. It's almost time. And some of you
- 17:28have been carrying things for many, many years.
- 17:31Promises that God has given to you. And the enemy
- 17:36would come in and say, hey, see, it's never going
- 17:39to be fulfilled. It's been 10 years. It's been
- 17:4320 years. It's been 30 years. There is no expiration.
- 17:50on the promise of God. God's promises are not
- 17:55like our refrigerator after food pantry. When
- 18:00I have to go in and clean out all of the expired
- 18:04dairy. That is not God's promise. There's no
- 18:09expiration date. The Lord is near. It's almost
- 18:13time. And some of you need to kind of rise up
- 18:15and say, God, is it almost time? Is it almost
- 18:19time? I have an expectation that it's almost
- 18:24time. When, God? When is the promise going to
- 18:27come to pass? The Lord is near. It is almost
- 18:32time. It is almost time. And listen to what it
- 18:36says there in Joshua 3, verse 4. The instruction
- 18:40given is, then you will know which way to go.
- 18:44Since you have never been this way before. Oh,
- 18:50man. The Israelites had the promise. They had
- 18:54the promise back in Egypt of the promised land.
- 19:02And all that time they lived in slavery. Then
- 19:06they have all that time of traveling in the wilderness.
- 19:09And suddenly they're at the gates. of the promised
- 19:13land. And they've never been here. They hadn't
- 19:18because remember, they had been here before and
- 19:20they had sent Caleb and Joshua in for a report
- 19:25and the spies. And the spies came back and said,
- 19:29no, those giants are too big. We can't take this
- 19:31land. And Caleb and Joshua said, no, we can take
- 19:35it. Let's go. Let's go. And because they went
- 19:40with the spies' report, they went back into the
- 19:43wilderness until that generation died off. And
- 19:49the only two to enter were Joshua and Caleb.
- 19:53So all of those that Joshua brought had never
- 19:58been there before. They could have grown up in
- 20:02the promised land, but their parents did not
- 20:06believe. Oh, man, we got a huge responsibility,
- 20:11parents, don't we? They were on the verge of
- 20:16crossing, but they'd never been this way before.
- 20:19And so they needed the guidance of the Ark of
- 20:22the Covenant. They needed the guidance of the
- 20:26presence of God. And listen, some of us... You've
- 20:31never been. You've only ever been in the place
- 20:33of believing for the promise. You've not experienced
- 20:36the promise. And it's kind of like my grandkids,
- 20:42when they get out of their, you know, if you
- 20:44don't know it, they live in this little camper
- 20:46while they are renovating. And it's been like,
- 20:49what, three years? I don't know. I've lost track.
- 20:52And they get to our house. And it's interesting.
- 20:56Because they have all this space. And what they
- 20:58will do is pile on top of each other on my couch.
- 21:02Like they're squashed up in the camper still.
- 21:06And for a long time, by the end of the month
- 21:10with us, they're all over my house. But initially,
- 21:13wherever they go outside the camper, they're
- 21:16still on top of each other. Because that's how
- 21:19they sit in the camper. They're watching TV together.
- 21:21They're scrunched up together. They're eating
- 21:24dinner together. They're all scrunched on top
- 21:26of each other. And so often, so often when we
- 21:31have never entered into the promises, when we've
- 21:34never walked into the freedom that God has, we
- 21:36come in living like that. Like we're still scrunched
- 21:42up and not spacious. And God's word says in Psalms,
- 21:46I'm bringing you into a spacious place. A spacious
- 21:51place. In fact, Edmund, when he was here for
- 21:55the month, gained nine pounds. Nine pounds. It
- 22:00became a daily thing to check the scale. And
- 22:03Jeremy joked, oh yeah, we get you out of the
- 22:06camper and you start growing, you know, like
- 22:08a plant that you repot. But for some of this,
- 22:12this is the way it is. We cannot imagine life
- 22:15that is now identified by the fulfillment of
- 22:20the blessing. The Israelites had wandered the
- 22:24desert for 40 years, and they're at the fulfillment
- 22:28process. And you know what their identity was?
- 22:31Oh, that's that group that just keeps wandering
- 22:34in the wilderness. They just keep setting up
- 22:36camp out in the... It's like Darren when he goes
- 22:40to district events. Who's Darren? Who's your
- 22:42husband? Oh, yeah, he's the camping guy. This
- 22:46is what the Israelites' ID was, their identification.
- 22:50They are the people that wander the wilderness
- 22:54when God was wanting them to be the people of
- 22:57the promise, the promised land people, right?
- 23:02And often we allow the illness that has been
- 23:05a part of us for so long become our identity.
- 23:09We allow lack that has been a part of us for
- 23:12generations to become our identity. Unhealthy
- 23:15relationships have become our identity for years
- 23:19and years. Whatever your thing is, put it there.
- 23:23It's become your identity. It's all you've known.
- 23:29And God is saying, I have a new identity for
- 23:33you. One that is, one that is given through the
- 23:42presence of God. Trav, I felt in worship today.
- 23:50See, when the Lord is near, things happen. And
- 23:56I felt that that over your wife, that her illness,
- 24:01If you don't know, Trav's wife, she's bedridden.
- 24:06But I believe that God has the promise for her,
- 24:11and it's almost time. It's almost time. It's
- 24:16almost time. In fact, our next point, the nearness
- 24:21of God, is going to apply to her illness because
- 24:24where he is, where his presence is, all these
- 24:28identities, are subject to his presence. They
- 24:34cannot withstand his presence. And so the Israelites
- 24:39needed the ark to guide them in this new way
- 24:43of living. It isn't for them to figure out how
- 24:48to become people of the promised land. It is
- 24:50for them to learn the way from the presence of
- 24:54God. The Lord is near. It's almost time. It's
- 25:04almost time. And so this week, I want you to
- 25:08get a little naggy with God. I want you to get
- 25:12a little bit, God, are we almost there yet? Are
- 25:16we almost there yet? I want that to kind of rise
- 25:19up in you. Because what is that saying? There's
- 25:22an expectation that something is about to happen.
- 25:28This past week, Pastor Ben was just pinned as
- 25:31chief. He got his promotion, and so we want to
- 25:36rejoice with him today. Yes, give him a big hand.
- 25:43He worked very hard for that. See, I believe
- 25:47that where his presence is, there is favor and
- 25:51that we should continue to become more and more
- 25:55what God has destined for us to become. And I
- 25:59believe what he's destined for me to become is
- 26:02more than what I am now. I believe what he's
- 26:05destined for you is more than what you are now.
- 26:08Because we do go from glory to glory to glory
- 26:12to glory. And as we step into more of his glory,
- 26:15we become more of the image of the son. Praise
- 26:20the Lord. It is almost time for you. And so you
- 26:24got to raise your expectation. I can't even imagine.
- 26:30Some of us were so close. We're at the edge of
- 26:32the promised land. And the enemy, even at the
- 26:36edge of the promised land, wants you to begin
- 26:38to doubt. To begin to say, I don't know, that
- 26:41river looks awfully big. I'm not sure if we can
- 26:46get across the Jordan. Never mind that they came
- 26:49out of slavery with the Red Sea split. Still,
- 26:54we have this Jordan River we've got to cross.
- 26:58The Lord is near. It's almost time. This last...
- 27:03definition I want us to really get today. The
- 27:07Lord is near, and so that means that whatever
- 27:11is in your life is in danger of the nearness
- 27:16of his presence. Whatever it is, sickness, lack,
- 27:23whatever it is, when the Lord is near, that means
- 27:29your thing is in danger. Look at the last verse
- 27:35there in verse 4 that we read. But keep a distance
- 27:39of about 2 ,000 cubits between you and the ark.
- 27:44Do not go near it. Think of this. The ark of
- 27:48the Lord represented the presence of God, right?
- 27:52Right? And so they're sending the ark ahead of
- 27:59all of Israel. They are not sending the ark surrounded
- 28:05by the men of war. They are sending the ark ahead
- 28:10with the unarmed Levitical priests. Nothing to
- 28:17guard the ark. God doesn't need our protection.
- 28:26He is our protection. Without the ark going ahead,
- 28:32they would be completely open to the enemy. And
- 28:38you would think in our own thinking that, oh,
- 28:41that's our thing. We need to protect it. We need
- 28:44to put our special forces on the ark. That's
- 28:49not what God said. You stay back a half a mile.
- 28:53I only want the priest near. I only want the
- 28:57priest near. The Lord is near to you, so be anxious
- 29:04for nothing but pray. Our prayer meetings, I
- 29:10want to encourage you, where there is prayer,
- 29:12things happen. We've had one woman who had a
- 29:17great need financially. And we prayed one night
- 29:22for her, and the next day she received an unexpected
- 29:25check to completely pay off the need that she
- 29:28had. And that was not like, oh, somebody here
- 29:31knew the need and gave it to her. It was not
- 29:32that. It was outside of this. Jamie. Jamie has
- 29:38had neck pain for five years. Received prayer
- 29:42at one of our healing nights. And that was over
- 29:45a month ago. She has been pain -free ever since.
- 29:49Listen, the Lord is near, so be anxious for nothing
- 29:55and pray. Think of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
- 30:00Let's just think about them for a moment. In
- 30:03Daniel chapter 3, King Nebuchadnezzar, you know,
- 30:07he thinks, oh, I'm such a great king. I'm going
- 30:11to build a golden image. And when you hear the
- 30:15music begin to play, everybody's going to bow
- 30:17down and worship this image I've created. Whoever
- 30:23doesn't fall down and worships is going to be
- 30:27put into the furnace. And so in verse 12, it
- 30:34says there are some Jews. He gets this report
- 30:36from his men. King Nebuchadnezzar, there are
- 30:40some Jews that you have put into authority. They
- 30:43are rulers over the provinces. You've put them
- 30:47into authority and they refuse to bow down. And
- 30:53so verse 13 says, furious with rage. That just
- 31:00did King Nebuchadnezzar in. He becomes enraged
- 31:04in fury. And he summons Shadrach, Meshach, and
- 31:09Abednego. And says, if you do not worship it,
- 31:13you will be thrown into the blazing furnace.
- 31:17Then what god will rescue you from this land?
- 31:22As I was actually preaching this last Sunday
- 31:25in Petersburg, I read this verse and it was like
- 31:28I could see. See, we live in a time, the spirit
- 31:32of the world, if you do not come into agreement,
- 31:34it stirs up furious rage. You see it in conversations.
- 31:41If we don't come into alignment with the world's
- 31:44philosophy, they become enraged and furious with
- 31:50you. And this is exactly the response of King
- 31:54Nebuchadnezzar. I love, I love their response.
- 32:03They don't get all heated up in defense. They
- 32:06just simply say, you know what, Nebuchadnezzar?
- 32:12We do not need to defend ourselves before you
- 32:16in this matter. We don't need to defend ourselves
- 32:21in this. If we are thrown into the blazing fire,
- 32:28the God we serve is able to deliver us from it.
- 32:35How much confidence do we have in our God that
- 32:40we are so completely at peace? He is able to
- 32:45deliver us. And then they go on, though, to say
- 32:49this. If we are thrown into the furnace, God
- 32:54is going to deliver us. And here's what King
- 32:58Nebuchadnezzar did. He ordered the furnace heated
- 33:02seven times hotter. And then he commands his
- 33:10strongest guys, his military guys, tie them up.
- 33:13We're throwing them into the fire. And so these
- 33:18men in verse 21, wearing their robes, their trousers,
- 33:22their turbans, and other clothes, were bound
- 33:24and thrown into the blazing fire. The furnace
- 33:32was so hot that it killed the soldiers that threw
- 33:36them in. That's how hot it was. Firmly tied up.
- 33:45And then something happens. In verse 24, King
- 33:50Nebuchadnezzar is looking in. And he leaps to
- 33:56his feet in amazement. And he asks his advisors,
- 34:01okay, I need to just clarify the numbers. Because
- 34:04three is very confusing. Were there three men
- 34:08that you threw in? Yes, king. There were three
- 34:13men. Certainly. And Nebuchadnezzar says, look,
- 34:19I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound
- 34:26and unharmed, and the fourth looks like the son
- 34:30of the gods. All scholars agree that this is
- 34:34the pre -incarnate Jesus. I find it interesting
- 34:40that Nebuchadnezzar can see the fourth man in
- 34:43the fire. It does not say that Shadrach, Meshach,
- 34:47and Abednego saw the fourth man in the fire.
- 34:50Maybe they did. Maybe they didn't. They knew
- 34:54they were free in there. They were walking around.
- 34:57But it doesn't tell us if they saw him or not.
- 35:03But King Nebuchadnezzar sure did. He saw Jesus
- 35:07in there walking around. They're just taking
- 35:10a stroll around the hot furnace. The only thing
- 35:16it had consumed was the bonds, the ties on their
- 35:20hands. And so it says, they saw that the fire
- 35:26had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of
- 35:30their head singed. Their robes were not scorched,
- 35:34and there was no smell of fire on them. There
- 35:42was no aroma of fire. We used to, at my previous,
- 35:49actually the first church we pastored in Petersburg,
- 35:52we had the women would do like a secret Santa
- 35:54thing. You remember back in the day when we used
- 35:56to do that stuff? And I knew from the get -go
- 35:59who had my name because every gift had this aroma
- 36:05on it of fire. And I knew Sukastelik has a wood
- 36:12-burning stove. And so every gift smelled like
- 36:17her wood -burning stove. Afterwards, I said,
- 36:21you might want to be careful for future reference.
- 36:26Can you imagine being within and coming out,
- 36:30not one scorch, not one bit of aroma of fire?
- 36:35They were so completely free from their situation.
- 36:42So free from it. Listen, when the Lord is near,
- 36:48the things in your life are in danger of his
- 36:52presence. In danger. And so it says in verse
- 36:5729, therefore I decree, the king, that the people
- 37:01of any nation or language who say anything against
- 37:05the goddess Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be
- 37:08cut into pieces and their houses be burned into
- 37:11piles of rubble. He really did go for the dramatic,
- 37:15didn't he? For no other god can save in this
- 37:19way. Listen. When the people see you in your
- 37:24life coming through the fire, and you don't come
- 37:29out being stinky and scarred up, but they see
- 37:32that your God got into the fire with you, what
- 37:38kind of God does that? He gets right into your
- 37:41mess. And he doesn't just sit in the mess with
- 37:45you. He pulls you out and cleans you up so you
- 37:50don't even smell like it. So you don't even,
- 37:53you weren't even scorched by it. This is what
- 37:56happens when the Lord is near. This is what happens.
- 38:00And then following the fire, verse 30, the king
- 38:05promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the
- 38:09province of Babylon. They came out. Man, we got
- 38:16to quit just sitting in our fire, woe is me.
- 38:19We need to let Jesus into our messes. We need
- 38:24to invite Jesus into our fires and say, Jesus,
- 38:28I want to walk around in this fire with you.
- 38:31I want to be in your presence, even if I'm in
- 38:34the fire. If I perish, I perish, as long as you
- 38:38are with me in the fire. And when the Lord is
- 38:42near, man, nothing can stand. Nothing can stand.
- 38:47We need to raise our expectation to what Jesus
- 38:51can do, not what our circumstance can do. We
- 38:58often promote our circumstance. We often, we
- 39:03want to one -up everybody on how bad we have
- 39:06it. You think you have it bad? Listen to my story.
- 39:11Oh man, come on, I want to one -up what God does
- 39:13through my life. I want to one -up, yeah, it
- 39:17was bad, but look at what my God did. Oh yeah?
- 39:19Look at what he did for me. What if we sat around
- 39:22the tables just doing that? Look at what God
- 39:24did for me. Oh no, but look at what he did for
- 39:26me. Let's one -up what God does in and through
- 39:29us. Amen? Yeah. And so I love, I'm going to ask
- 39:34the worship team to come back up. I love... this
- 39:37whole chapter, because we have this verse, the
- 39:41Lord is near at the beginning, and then we have
- 39:44the command, so rejoice, be anxious for nothing,
- 39:49pray. We then go on in the chapter, and he tells
- 39:53us all of the things that we should think about.
- 39:57And there's nowhere in the list of things we
- 40:00should think about that has listed all of our
- 40:03woes and problems. He says, here are the things
- 40:06you need to think about, the praiseworthy things.
- 40:10He then goes on in the chapter to talk about
- 40:13how to be content in the lack and in the abundance.
- 40:18And so he concludes this sandwich of a chapter
- 40:21with this verse in verse 13. And you know it
- 40:27well. And some of you really need to start believing
- 40:29it today. I can do all things through Christ
- 40:36who strengthens me. I can do all things through
- 40:42Christ. Why? Because the Lord is near. Christ
- 40:47is near to you. And so you can do all things
- 40:51because he strengthens you. And so this morning,
- 40:56as I was concluding this, what I feel is this
- 41:01sense of repentance. We hear the word repentance
- 41:05and we think, I must have sinned and I need to
- 41:08repent for my sin. But that isn't always the
- 41:11case. Because sometimes our repentance is needed
- 41:15when we've been living in a way that he doesn't
- 41:19want us to live. Maybe it is... You've been in
- 41:22the fire and you've been in woe is me. And we
- 41:24need to repent and we need to begin to believe
- 41:28that the Lord is near to you. And so I've been
- 41:34complaining. And so I've been anxious. So I've
- 41:39been worrying. And my prayers, they don't really
- 41:44have faith. They're just full of worry. Today
- 41:49we need to repent. The Lord is near. We are not
- 41:52recognizing his nearness to us. And we need to
- 41:57align ourselves to his presence. Just as the
- 42:01Israelites aligned themselves to the Ark of the
- 42:04Covenant, we have to align ourselves because
- 42:07you just maybe haven't been on this road before.
- 42:10And you need to do a little bit of a course correction
- 42:13in your life of where God is taking you. That's
- 42:18okay. That's what repentance is. It's a change
- 42:20of mind. It's a change of direction. And we want
- 42:24to get behind the presence of God and where he
- 42:27is going. He is near to you. He is near to you.
- 42:33And so this morning, I'm going to invite us to
- 42:36stand. And the team is going to lead us. And
- 42:39as they're leading us, some of you need to come
- 42:42to the altar and you need to respond. Some of
- 42:45you need to repent because you have let the situations
- 42:50rise above the nearness of his presence. And
- 42:54you're no longer seeing his presence. And you
- 42:57need to repent. Need to come into alignment with
- 43:01where the presence of God is in your life. And
- 43:05so, Father, this morning, as we come to this
- 43:09moment, as we come to this moment, of realigning,
- 43:15of repenting that we have ceased to see your
- 43:20nearness in our life. God, I ask that you would
- 43:25come in like a flood, that your presence, Lord,
- 43:29you've given the invitation. There is nothing
- 43:32to hinder the nearness of God in our lives. You
- 43:36are here. You are waiting for us to draw near
- 43:39to you. You've already... cross. You've already
- 43:45been resurrected. You've already torn the veil.
- 43:48And so you've just made an invitation and you're
- 43:51waiting for us to step closer. You're waiting
- 43:54for us, even as you have drawn near to us, you're
- 43:58waiting for us to draw near to you. And this
- 44:01morning, we make that fresh commitment. We make
- 44:04just a course correction that we're not going
- 44:07to let things, we're not going to let life get
- 44:10in the way of your presence. You are our Your
- 44:13presence is our priority. And there is nothing
- 44:16in life that is greater than your presence. There
- 44:20is nothing that we need to make more room for
- 44:23in life than your presence. So we draw near to
- 44:27you. We draw near to you. We draw near to you
- 44:32today. Thank you, Lord.
