- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie.
- 0:06Speaker 2: And Smitha.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And welcome to Stuff Never Told You, a production of iHeartRadio.
- 0:18Speaker 3: And today, we are bringing back a classic, a Monday
- 0:22Speaker 3: mini classic about friendship.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:25Speaker 4: You know, I've been thinking a lot about the stress
- 0:29Speaker 4: and everything. And one of the conversations we had was
- 0:33Speaker 4: about the power of of friendship and how actually it
- 0:36Speaker 4: is beneficial, especially when it comes to friendships with other women,
- 0:41Speaker 4: women and women, because it just helps during a stressful time.
- 0:44Speaker 4: And we're like, yeah, and it's backed by science. So
- 0:48Speaker 4: definitely had to bring this in as a reminder that
- 0:51Speaker 4: maybe one of the stress relievers that we do have
- 0:54Speaker 4: that is cheaper than other things are friendships. So hope
- 1:00Speaker 4: you enjoyed this classic.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And Samantha.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And welcome to Stuff One Never Told You, a production
- 1:10Speaker 1: of iHeartRadio.
- 1:21Speaker 4: And welcome to another edition of Monday Mini, where we
- 1:23Speaker 4: talk about random things and put a little bit of
- 1:25Speaker 4: statistics in there or facts or news. We try to
- 1:28Speaker 4: make it a little different from our happy hour because
- 1:31Speaker 4: it is a personal take or something that we're thinking on.
- 1:34Speaker 4: And then we do pseudo research, meaning like we don't
- 1:37Speaker 4: do a lot of in-depth research and or maybe come
- 1:40Speaker 4: from an article that got us interested in it.
- 1:43Speaker 2: However, whatever.
- 1:44Speaker 4: So just to explain what the Monday Mini is again,
- 1:46Speaker 4: because I think everybody's like, what is this?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Just a small episode?
- 1:49Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:50Speaker 2: But today, I.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Thought I would make a switch because my last happy
- 1:54Speaker 4: hour was really sad. And unfortunately right now with the
- 1:59Speaker 4: seasons and the holidays, I'm not the happiest person, most
- 2:03Speaker 4: joyous person in the world. But I thought I'd take
- 2:05Speaker 4: a minute to actually reflect on things that do make
- 2:08Speaker 4: me happy. And as a reminder of things that can
- 2:10Speaker 4: give you good support and happiness. And that's friendships, specifically
- 2:16Speaker 4: female friendships or friendships with other women. And I'm not
- 2:20Speaker 4: excluding anybody of the non-gender binary, any of that. We're
- 2:24Speaker 4: including trans women in this. We're talking about the people
- 2:28Speaker 4: who would see themselves as femme, because I think there's
- 2:30Speaker 4: a specific energy and vibe in that. So when I
- 2:33Speaker 4: say that, I'm meaning all. This is including all. So
- 2:36Speaker 4: go ahead and put that at that very beginning. Of course,
- 2:38Speaker 4: we know there's a lot of TERFs out there. There's
- 2:41Speaker 4: a lot of people who have a lot of prejudices.
- 2:44Speaker 4: And they have nice messaging with sometimes really awful hearts.
- 2:50Speaker 4: So I say this because a lot of these things
- 2:52Speaker 4: that we talk about when it comes to friendships and
- 2:54Speaker 4: keeping friendships comes from blogs. And you never know what
- 2:58Speaker 4: these people that wrote these blogs, their real personality is.
- 3:02Speaker 4: I think about that often when I'm thinking about like
- 3:03Speaker 4: feminists first as well or feminists around the world that
- 3:08Speaker 4: we don't know. They may have good intentions in one
- 3:11Speaker 4: of these things, but some of these things are not pretty. Right.
- 3:15Speaker 2: So just as a kind of a... Caveat to all
- 3:18Speaker 2: of this.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Yeah. But straying away from that to the good part,
- 3:22Speaker 4: I think it's really important that we talk about the
- 3:24Speaker 4: friendships that happen and how important it is to have
- 3:27Speaker 4: friendships and holidays. Of course, I think we can look
- 3:31Speaker 4: at things like Friendsgiving. We have a good thing called
- 3:34Speaker 4: Friendsgivmas in our group because we can blend in both
- 3:37Speaker 4: Christmas and Thanksgiving.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Because it gets a little difficult trying to get together sometimes.
- 3:42Speaker 4: And so blending that in, but having opportunities to celebrate
- 3:46Speaker 4: the seasons.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Together with just friends or found families, as we like
- 3:51Speaker 2: to talk about.
- 3:52Speaker 4: And if you just listened to a couple of weeks ago,
- 3:57Speaker 4: as this comes out, we had the amazing Raquel Willis
- 4:00Speaker 4: on the show and something she talked about when I
- 4:04Speaker 4: had asked her specifically about finding the balance between transparency
- 4:08Speaker 4: versus activism and then also self-preservation and knowing that you
- 4:13Speaker 4: don't owe people your stories. But like, how do you
- 4:17Speaker 4: keep the balance? And she talked about friendship. And I really,
- 4:19Speaker 4: really loved that point. And it did remind me. I
- 4:22Speaker 4: was like, oh, yeah, like keeping people like you, Annie,
- 4:25Speaker 4: in my life. You just talked about the joy of
- 4:28Speaker 4: wearing your Life Day sweater.
- 4:30Speaker 2: And I love that.
- 4:31Speaker 4: I'm like, man, I need to use that as an
- 4:34Speaker 4: example and find something like that for myself where I
- 4:36Speaker 4: just find some of the like something that's personal to
- 4:40Speaker 4: me that I can put on physically and be like, ah,
- 4:43Speaker 4: this makes me happy. I will say cardigans. Especially at
- 4:46Speaker 4: the beginning of fall when I get to actually wear it.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I did do a dance. My partner was like, okay,
- 4:52Speaker 4: you're ridiculously happy. And he understands like why for me.
- 4:56Speaker 2: That gives me a little bit of joy.
- 4:57Speaker 4: But, you know, stuff like that is like, oh, yeah,
- 4:59Speaker 4: things like that are nice. So I had that good moment.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Thank you for giving me that. But just the friends
- 5:06Speaker 4: of this time of year is really, really important. In general,
- 5:10Speaker 4: I went through articles about that. femme friendships and why
- 5:14Speaker 4: they're important and here's some of the things research y'all
- 5:17Speaker 4: because it's like years and years and years of research
- 5:20Speaker 4: and i think the last 15 years has been beautiful
- 5:22Speaker 4: where the ties are turned from don't be that i'm
- 5:25Speaker 4: not that type of girl and be a girl's girl
- 5:28Speaker 4: and know what that means and i love them yeah
- 5:30Speaker 4: so one of the things they talk about is emotional
- 5:33Speaker 4: support the benefit of having support from friends when things
- 5:36Speaker 4: are down whether it's like lifting you up because you're
- 5:40Speaker 4: sad about something. And so they try to help you
- 5:44Speaker 4: understand why you're sad or distract you, which both of
- 5:46Speaker 4: those things are beautiful. Validation, having friends who understand and
- 5:51Speaker 4: appreciate you just for you and giving you that confidence. Oh,
- 5:54Speaker 4: and by the way, this was from a blog that
- 5:58Speaker 4: was researched. They also found research for it called The
- 6:01Speaker 4: Power of Female Friendship. And it's from grace.health. So I
- 6:06Speaker 4: don't know much about grace.health. So don't take that as a, Right.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Like I'm advocating for it. It's just they had good research.
- 6:13Speaker 4: So once again, that's about shared experiences. Yeah. I think
- 6:18Speaker 4: especially when you have old, old friendships that you've had
- 6:21Speaker 4: for years and you can look back on things and
- 6:24Speaker 4: laugh to you, cry type of situations, knowing some like
- 6:27Speaker 4: I explained that. something to my partner. I ran into
- 6:31Speaker 4: a friend that I haven't seen in like five years,
- 6:34Speaker 4: literally out of nowhere. And it was really lovely to
- 6:36Speaker 4: see her. And I say this with all like so excitement.
- 6:40Speaker 4: And it literally shocked me to the point I'm like,
- 6:41Speaker 4: you don't live here. Like it sounded like an accusation,
- 6:44Speaker 4: but it was more of shock. And that's all I
- 6:46Speaker 4: could say because I was so like confused to see her.
- 6:50Speaker 4: But I just brought back some of the memories I
- 6:52Speaker 4: had of her and who she was and how joyful
- 6:54Speaker 4: it was. And I was explaining to my partner about her.
- 6:57Speaker 4: And it was like, You know, that smile moments of like, oh,
- 7:01Speaker 4: that's shared experience because I lived with her as well
- 7:03Speaker 4: for a year. So it was lovely to see her.
- 7:04Speaker 4: And I thought about that. And then, of course, the accountability.
- 7:08Speaker 4: I will tell you, people who keep me accountable are
- 7:12Speaker 4: some of the best. Caroline from the previous shows is
- 7:15Speaker 4: one of the best ones to keep me accountable. But
- 7:17Speaker 4: she does it in such a way that it's so good.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh, yeah, you're right. I did that
- 7:22Speaker 2: in my bed.
- 7:24Speaker 4: You know, like stuff like that. But it keeps you
- 7:26Speaker 4: as a better person and as a better friend, which
- 7:27Speaker 4: I want to be. And I love everything about that.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Of course, the laughter and joy. We all know that
- 7:33Speaker 4: that's a great benefit. I love listening to Annie talk
- 7:37Speaker 4: about her stuff and then just watching her laugh at herself.
- 7:40Speaker 4: And then I'll make a joke and she'll laugh at it, too.
- 7:42Speaker 4: It is a delightful moment. And then me laughing, watching
- 7:45Speaker 4: her laugh. Or I will say I do laugh when
- 7:48Speaker 4: she cries at shows like Last of Us and I
- 7:50Speaker 4: enjoy every bit of her love for it.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I enjoy that you enjoy it.
- 7:56Speaker 4: I literally pulled up the video of you saying, this
- 7:59Speaker 4: is me before the episode of this, the Bill and
- 8:02Speaker 4: Frank episode, and this is you after, and me laughing
- 8:05Speaker 4: in the background. The love you have for that show
- 8:09Speaker 4: is amazing. And it talks about improving your immune function.
- 8:14Speaker 4: And I have a couple of articles that talk about that,
- 8:16Speaker 4: that it actually has higher levels of a particular antibody
- 8:21Speaker 4: that helps to fight off infection. And this one is
- 8:24Speaker 4: from a flashback.com article.
- 8:28Speaker 2: I really don't know who they are either. But it
- 8:32Speaker 2: is written by Kate Lehi, L-E-H-I.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Again, not necessarily... advocating for them or anything. But I
- 8:42Speaker 4: think she did an amazing job with this article. But
- 8:44Speaker 4: she actually wrote, most surprisingly of all, female friendships are
- 8:48Speaker 4: actually good for your physical and mental health. Researchers at
- 8:51Speaker 4: UCLA found that female response to stress can be reduced
- 8:55Speaker 4: after a release of oxytocin, which came when surrounded by
- 8:58Speaker 4: their female friends. In another study, it was found that
- 9:01Speaker 4: valuing friendships influenced better health among adults. And the head
- 9:05Speaker 4: of psychiatry at Stanford University in the U.S. said one
- 9:08Speaker 4: of the best things a woman can do for her
- 9:10Speaker 4: health was to, quote, nurture her relationships with her friends.
- 9:15Speaker 4: And then goes on to say it's noted that women
- 9:17Speaker 4: who are around their female friends see an increase in
- 9:20Speaker 4: release of chemical serotonin, which controls your mood and is
- 9:23Speaker 4: responsible for happiness. And studies have also shown a strong
- 9:27Speaker 4: link between human attachment and good mental health. And I
- 9:30Speaker 4: feel like these are all obvious, but it's also exciting
- 9:33Speaker 4: that they did the research for it, specifically among women
- 9:36Speaker 4: in that level. I will say yesterday was really sad.
- 9:49Speaker 4: If you heard my happy hour a week ago, it
- 9:52Speaker 4: wasn't cute. But like it was a lot of things
- 9:55Speaker 4: that was going through my head and I was kind
- 9:57Speaker 4: of spiraling. And then last night I decided to go to...
- 10:00Speaker 4: work out and I have made really good friends when
- 10:03Speaker 4: I go work out to these places. We just connect
- 10:06Speaker 4: on a very like superficial level, but it's joyous. It
- 10:09Speaker 4: helped my mood so much to be around them, to
- 10:12Speaker 4: do something together, to enjoy the music. The teacher there, DeMarco,
- 10:16Speaker 4: he's an amazing guy. But just connecting with friends again.
- 10:20Speaker 4: And the women that we get to hype each other.
- 10:22Speaker 4: It's one of the best things. Hyping one another up,
- 10:26Speaker 4: I think, is a whole different level. Especially being on
- 10:30Speaker 4: a superficial level, just enjoying their personality.
- 10:33Speaker 2: It's nice.
- 10:35Speaker 4: And I definitely see that kind of level of like
- 10:38Speaker 4: serotonin rising and feeling being able to like calmly sit
- 10:41Speaker 4: instead of watching the world burn. And then I was
- 10:45Speaker 4: thinking about this again, specifically with the holidays. We were
- 10:48Speaker 4: very stressed. I was very I am very stressed with this.
- 10:51Speaker 4: And I was thinking about the people who have lost families.
- 10:53Speaker 4: I talk about not having a connection, and that does
- 10:55Speaker 4: feel like a loss to me, but truly losing, grieving
- 10:58Speaker 4: over families who have died, passed on, who you have
- 11:01Speaker 4: cut off all connection with, and how that really is
- 11:04Speaker 4: a painful, these holidays are a painful, painful time, especially
- 11:08Speaker 4: if you feel alone. And there was an article written
- 11:12Speaker 4: by Rebecca Brenner for The Times, and it's titled, The
- 11:16Speaker 4: Revolutionary Power of Female Friendships During the Holidays. And she
- 11:19Speaker 4: specifically talks about the loss of her mother. And she
- 11:24Speaker 4: also talks about the fact that she doesn't do the
- 11:25Speaker 4: depth of what her mother did.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And she never will. And I appreciated that.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Because, yeah, no way in hell I would do what
- 11:36Speaker 4: my mother loves to do and also stresses out about.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Which ends up with her calling my father a sh * *.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Also part of our family tradition. Uh-huh. One of my
- 11:47Speaker 2: favorite moments.
- 11:49Speaker 4: But she genuinely is mad at my father for being
- 11:52Speaker 4: neglectful and not helping.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Out as much as he should. But I think it's interesting.
- 11:57Speaker 4: She talks about it and she says, this holiday season,
- 12:01Speaker 4: I won't cook her elaborate holiday dinners. I won't go
- 12:04Speaker 4: to midnight mass or track my two young kids across
- 12:06Speaker 4: the country for large extended family gatherings. But I will
- 12:09Speaker 4: step closer to the memory of her because of the
- 12:12Speaker 4: love and the support of the women in my life.
- 12:14Speaker 4: I really thought that was a beautiful story. Like, yes,
- 12:17Speaker 4: she lost a mother, and she might not do exactly
- 12:21Speaker 4: what she did. And there feels like a little lost
- 12:24Speaker 4: in that. But she knows where she can find that
- 12:27Speaker 4: same love and level of love and care and support
- 12:30Speaker 4: through the women in her life. She also talked about
- 12:32Speaker 4: the 2010 study, which was written by Ana M. Martinez-Almond.
- 12:38Speaker 4: entitled College Women's Female Friendships, A Longitudinal View. And she writes,
- 12:43Speaker 4: found that female friendships are, quote, a site for assessing
- 12:47Speaker 4: meaning of self and of reality, a site for the
- 12:50Speaker 4: experience of different perspective and viewpoints, and an opportunity for
- 12:54Speaker 4: growth through interdependency. And in a more recent 2020 study
- 12:59Speaker 4: in feminism and psychology, found that female friendships are, quote,
- 13:02Speaker 4: a site of ease, escape, and refuge. And I think
- 13:06Speaker 4: it's so perfect, especially as we talk during the holidays
- 13:10Speaker 4: as a stress, feeling a little bit of loss, feeling
- 13:12Speaker 4: a little bit of non-direction, I guess, not sure what
- 13:15Speaker 4: to do half the time. There's a lot going on.
- 13:18Speaker 4: And seeing articles like this and reminding yourself, yeah, yeah,
- 13:25Speaker 4: friendships are important. And it can be hard to maintain
- 13:30Speaker 4: as adults with different stretches of life. But it is
- 13:33Speaker 4: important to try to try to maintain them. And she
- 13:35Speaker 4: goes on, Brenner goes on, writes, and perhaps this is
- 13:38Speaker 4: the best gift we can offer one another, our presence
- 13:41Speaker 4: and kind words in a culture and season that can
- 13:44Speaker 4: feel so transactional, being shaped and nurtured by your people's
- 13:47Speaker 4: compassionate attention feels revolutionary.
- 13:50Speaker 2: And it does. And it does. And Annie, I want
- 13:53Speaker 2: to thank you because you're one of those revolutionary people
- 13:56Speaker 2: for me. I love you.
- 13:58Speaker 1: And you are for me. I love you too. The
- 14:01Speaker 1: other day I was.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Like smiling to myself, remembering, because I told the story
- 14:07Speaker 3: recently of our disastrous lazy river.
- 14:12Speaker 5: But it's just like having those memories where we were
- 14:17Speaker 5: literally being laughed at by the hotel staff and an
- 14:21Speaker 5: old man in.
- 14:22Speaker 1: A tube and a young kid in a tube.
- 14:25Speaker 5: Yep.
- 14:26Speaker 1: But we shared it together.
- 14:28Speaker 4: We did.
- 14:28Speaker 1: And it was so funny. It was so funny.
- 14:31Speaker 2: It was because both of us were in the same boat.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Yes.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Realizing both of us were bad at this.
- 14:38Speaker 1: We're bad at relaxing, which is perhaps clear with this episode.
- 14:42Speaker 4: No, everybody else was confused. And they're like, but we
- 14:44Speaker 4: love it. I'm like, I'm glad you weren't a part
- 14:45Speaker 4: of this because that would have stressed me out more.
- 14:48Speaker 1: And then we did it twice because we got stuck
- 14:51Speaker 1: in the loop.
- 14:51Speaker 2: We couldn't get out.
- 14:52Speaker 4: The first time wasn't good, but we couldn't get out,
- 14:55Speaker 4: so we just sacrificed it.
- 14:57Speaker 1: We did. Oh, man, it was funny, though.
- 15:00Speaker 2: What a haunting.
- 15:02Speaker 3: But it's things like that, having those memories, sharing those times.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Even if it's maybe not necessarily your thing, like with
- 15:15Speaker 3: Life Day, my friends, But like having that and like
- 15:18Speaker 3: having those stories, it does feel like such a boost
- 15:21Speaker 3: and such a light.
- 15:26Speaker 1: And so precious, like so important.
- 15:29Speaker 3: And yeah, I can totally see the kind of healing
- 15:34Speaker 3: nature of it. We've talked about it before in other
- 15:36Speaker 3: episodes too. So yeah, I am so lucky to have
- 15:41Speaker 3: the friends I have and That they're willing to be
- 15:44Speaker 3: goofy with me and I can be goofy with them.
- 15:47Speaker 4: And just to the Sminty fam, if you do feel alone,
- 15:51Speaker 4: I hope you hear this episode and know that we
- 15:56Speaker 4: do hear you when you.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Write to us, when you let us know what's going on.
- 15:59Speaker 4: I know we got a lot of messages on Instagram
- 16:02Speaker 4: specific to a lot of Annie's loves.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Didn't respond to those.
- 16:06Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I showed it to her though. I love y'all. I
- 16:08Speaker 2: will respond.
- 16:10Speaker 4: But yes, we do see them. We do hear them.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Those who send out support to us, that's the same thing.
- 16:17Speaker 4: There's a healing to that as well. When you hear
- 16:20Speaker 4: our own struggles or vulnerability, and then you come in
- 16:24Speaker 4: and just talk about your own and like validate what
- 16:27Speaker 4: we're saying.
- 16:28Speaker 2: It's lovely. So we thank you.
- 16:31Speaker 3: We do thank you. It really means so much. So
- 16:35Speaker 3: And I hope sometimes I worry that it sounds like,
- 16:37Speaker 3: because when you get like one bad message, and I
- 16:41Speaker 3: feel like I worry that we make it sound like
- 16:45Speaker 3: we're not talking to the people who are listening. I'm
- 16:47Speaker 3: pretty sure the people who send those like saw a
- 16:50Speaker 3: title and will send it. You are all lovely is
- 16:53Speaker 3: what I'm saying. No, we get like one.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And I'm like, no.
- 17:01Speaker 4: I know.
- 17:01Speaker 2: The review is the same way for me.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I'm like, they all hate me. No, everyone is so kind.
- 17:07Speaker 3: And I do love another thing I love about things
- 17:09Speaker 3: like like what you were talking about Friends Give Smith.
- 17:12Speaker 3: I love like the traditions people make because I have
- 17:15Speaker 3: the cheese giving.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:17Speaker 3: My friends and I used to do a gift exchange
- 17:19Speaker 3: where you couldn't spend any money on it. So you
- 17:21Speaker 3: would get the most ridiculous things. And I loved it.
- 17:25Speaker 3: I've told this story before, but one of my favorite
- 17:27Speaker 3: things was for the show, Katie. It was a big
- 17:32Speaker 3: bird ornament, but the legs were broken off.
- 17:36Speaker 1: And I adore it. It's like one of my favorite ornaments.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Because it's so weird and funny.
- 17:45Speaker 1: And every time I see it, I think about that.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I'm like, where did you get this?
- 17:49Speaker 2: She stepped on it and was like, oh.
- 17:51Speaker 1: I'll give it to Annie.
- 17:52Speaker 4: My imagination that goes into, there are ornaments that you
- 17:56Speaker 4: can't touch.
- 17:57Speaker 2: On my mother's tree. And if you break it, like,
- 18:00Speaker 2: oh no.
- 18:00Speaker 4: In my head, I was like, yeah, I would have
- 18:02Speaker 4: taken that and just given it away and be like, no,
- 18:04Speaker 4: don't ask.
- 18:05Speaker 1: This is the way of my hiding it.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Yes. Yes.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Could be.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I've never gotten the full story out of her. Maybe
- 18:12Speaker 1: this year.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Maybe this year.
- 18:16Speaker 3: But yes, we would love to hear listeners about your
- 18:19Speaker 3: thoughts about this. If you have any traditions with your friends.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Oh, there's also... Oh man, I meant to talk about this.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Over on Saver, we did an interview with somebody who
- 18:30Speaker 3: used to work at the Butterball Hotline, not a sponsor.
- 18:32Speaker 3: And one of my favorite stories she told was about
- 18:37Speaker 3: getting a call from a group of women in college
- 18:40Speaker 3: who were, like, trying to cook a turkey in a
- 18:42Speaker 3: crockpot and had shorted the power.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Like, that is the fun memories you make.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Yep.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Yep.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I love it. Anyway, if you have stories like that.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Oh, please. We need them.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Please, we need them.
- 18:53Speaker 4: We'd love to have a collection we could share for
- 18:57Speaker 4: a holiday episode.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Please send us your stories.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Yes, please. That would be great.
